Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: On April 12th, 1951, NBC broadcast episode 96 of Dragnet,
- 0:06Speaker 1: Big Threat, sponsored by Fatima Cigarettes. In Los Angeles, a
- 0:11Speaker 1: businessman named Louis Butler has been beaten and robbed, yet
- 0:15Speaker 1: declines to make a police report after criminals threaten his family.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Sergeant Joe Friday and his robbery detail partner, Ben Romero,
- 0:25Speaker 1: are assigned to the investigation on day watch, while the
- 0:29Speaker 1: victim's fear leaves essential details unspoken. Jack Webb is heard
- 0:34Speaker 1: as Friday, with Barton Yarbrough as Romero. We now take
- 0:38Speaker 1: you back to the original broadcast.
- 0:41Speaker 2: The story you are.
- 0:45Speaker 3: About to hear is true.
- 0:47Speaker 4: Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent.
- 0:51Speaker 5: Fatima Cigarettes. Best of all long cigarettes. Brings you Dragnet.
- 0:56Speaker 6: Dragnet.
- 1:04Speaker 4: You're a detective sergeant. You're assigned to robbery detail. A
- 1:08Speaker 4: middle-aged businessman in your city is robbed and beaten senseless.
- 1:12Speaker 4: The holdup men escape. The victim refuses to report the crime.
- 1:17Speaker 4: Your job?
- 1:19Speaker 7: Investigate.
- 1:23Speaker 4: You'll be amazed when you compare Fatima with other long cigarettes.
- 1:28Speaker 5: You'll find they now cost the same. But in Fatima,
- 1:32Speaker 5: the difference is quality.
- 1:34Speaker 4: You see, Fatima is the quality king-size cigarette... because it
- 1:38Speaker 4: contains the finest domestic and Turkish tobaccos... superbly blended. And
- 1:43Speaker 4: Fatima is extra mild... with a much different, much better
- 1:47Speaker 4: flavor and aroma... than any other long cigarette.
- 1:50Speaker 5: So compare Fatima yourself. Fatima's now cost the same as
- 1:55Speaker 5: other long cigarettes... but your first puff will tell you.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Ah, that's different.
- 2:02Speaker 5: Yes, in Fatima... The difference is quality. Ask your dealer
- 2:07Speaker 5: for Fatima, the quality king-size cigarette. Best of all long cigarettes.
- 2:14Speaker 5: Start enjoying Fatima tomorrow. Dragnet, the documented drama of an
- 2:24Speaker 5: actual crime. For the next 30 minutes, in cooperation with
- 2:28Speaker 5: the Los Angeles Police Department, you will travel step by
- 2:31Speaker 5: step on the side of the law through an actual
- 2:33Speaker 5: case transcribed from official police files. From beginning to end,
- 2:37Speaker 5: from crime to punishment, Dragnet is the story of your
- 2:40Speaker 5: police force in action.
- 2:47Speaker 7: It was Tuesday, October 8th. It was overcast in Los Angeles.
- 2:50Speaker 7: We were working the day watch out of robbery detail.
- 2:53Speaker 7: My partner's Ben Romero.
- 2:54Speaker 3: The boss is Captain Didion.
- 2:56Speaker 7: My name's Friday. It was 11.23 a.m. when we got
- 2:59Speaker 7: to 700 South Hill Boulevard. The Butler Accordion Studios.
- 3:08Speaker 3: What do you think?
- 3:09Speaker 7: Oh, I don't know. It must be upstairs, I guess. Oh, yeah.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Yeah, there it is. Main office, second floor. Yeah.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Who is that, Joe?
- 3:20Speaker 7: What?
- 3:20Speaker 2: That portrait up there on the wall.
- 3:22Speaker 7: Wait a minute. Some printing underneath here.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Nice painting.
- 3:28Speaker 2: It says, Damien, the father of the accordion, Vienna, 1829.
- 3:31Speaker 8: What do you know about that?
- 3:40Speaker 2: Must be it down there, huh?
- 3:41Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Want to try?
- 3:44Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 3:47Speaker 7: Yes, sir?
- 3:48Speaker 2: Are you Louis Butler?
- 3:49Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right.
- 3:54Speaker 2: And can I help you?
- 3:55Speaker 7: Police officers, Mr.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Butler.
- 3:56Speaker 7: I'd like to talk to you for a minute.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Is your name Friday? Yes, sir.
- 3:59Speaker 7: That's right. This is my partner, Sergeant Romero.
- 4:02Speaker 3: How do you do? I'm sorry, Sergeant. I told you
- 4:05Speaker 3: on the phone. I just don't want to talk about it.
- 4:06Speaker 7: We'd appreciate it if we could have your cooperation. It's
- 4:09Speaker 7: a pretty important matter.
- 4:10Speaker 10: Well, I'm the only one concerned in it as far
- 4:11Speaker 10: as I can see. I just assume forget the whole thing. Besides,
- 4:15Speaker 10: I got a pretty busy day ahead of me. Well,
- 4:17Speaker 10: we'd like to straighten you out, Mr.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Butler.
- 4:18Speaker 7: It concerns a lot more people than just yourself. Now,
- 4:21Speaker 7: we're not going to take much of your time. Just
- 4:22Speaker 7: a few questions, that's all.
- 4:23Speaker 3: I told you on the phone, Sergeant. I don't want
- 4:25Speaker 3: to talk about it. Can't you just forget about the
- 4:27Speaker 3: whole thing?
- 4:27Speaker 7: It's only going to take a few minutes, sir.
- 4:30Speaker 3: All right. Come in if you want. Thank you.
- 4:32Speaker 7: Thank you.
- 4:34Speaker 3: The place is in kind of a mess. Wife's away
- 4:36Speaker 3: to mother's. You can sit down if you want.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Oh, thank you.
- 4:41Speaker 7: Thank you very much.
- 4:43Speaker 3: All right, Pepper.
- 4:45Speaker 7: I'll feed you.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Just a minute.
- 4:47Speaker 2: It's a nice cat you got there.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Siamese?
- 4:50Speaker 2: A little bit, yeah.
- 4:51Speaker 3: It's my wife's. Don't care too much for cats myself.
- 4:57Speaker 2: All right, Pepper.
- 5:00Speaker 7: Now, wait a minute.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Did you notice that? Here you go, Pepper. That ought
- 5:09Speaker 2: to hold you for a.
- 5:12Speaker 3: While.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Look at that, Jill. Sure goes for that milk, huh? Yeah,
- 5:16Speaker 2: sure does.
- 5:17Speaker 3: You're going to have to make it fast, Sergeant. I've
- 5:19Speaker 3: got an appointment for lunch downtown.
- 5:20Speaker 7: All right, sir. I'd just like to have you elaborate
- 5:22Speaker 7: on what Dr. Hart told us. Is he your family doctor,
- 5:25Speaker 7: by the way?
- 5:25Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right. He had no business calling you in
- 5:27Speaker 3: the first place. I told him I didn't want it
- 5:29Speaker 3: to get out. What did he tell you?
- 5:32Speaker 8: He said you came to him for treatment the night
- 5:34Speaker 8: before last. He told him you'd been beaten up and robbed.
- 5:36Speaker 8: He treated you for cuts and bruises about the face
- 5:39Speaker 8: and head.
- 5:39Speaker 3: No, it was nothing. Didn't amount to anything.
- 5:42Speaker 7: Well, was there actually a robbery, Mr. Butler?
- 5:44Speaker 3: Believe me, Sergeant, it didn't amount to anything. I don't
- 5:46Speaker 3: even want to go into it.
- 5:47Speaker 7: How much did the robbery involve money, I mean?
- 5:49Speaker 10: I'd rather not say. I don't want any fuss made
- 5:52Speaker 10: about it. That's why I didn't report it. It just
- 5:53Speaker 10: isn't worth it to me.
- 5:54Speaker 8: Well, I understand the holdup men took more than $ 800
- 5:57Speaker 8: from you.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Wouldn't you like to get that money back?
- 6:00Speaker 10: I don't want to be nasty about this thing, but
- 6:02Speaker 10: I was the one who was held up. Now, if
- 6:03Speaker 10: I don't want to press the case, I don't see
- 6:05Speaker 10: why anyone else.
- 6:05Speaker 7: Should worry about it.
- 6:06Speaker 3: It was my money.
- 6:07Speaker 7: How about the beating that thieves gave you?
- 6:09Speaker 10: It's nothing serious. It's like I told you on the phone.
- 6:11Speaker 10: I want to forget about the whole thing.
- 6:12Speaker 7: Well, it must have involved more than just a few
- 6:14Speaker 7: scratches from the looks of you and the doctor had
- 6:16Speaker 7: to treat you.
- 6:17Speaker 3: Take my word for it, please. I'm all right.
- 6:18Speaker 7: I don't want to press charges.
- 6:20Speaker 8: I'd appreciate it if you'd give us some kind of
- 6:22Speaker 8: an explanation, Mr.
- 6:23Speaker 7: Butler.
- 6:23Speaker 3: Why, I don't want to bother, that's all.
- 6:25Speaker 2: There's nothing to explain.
- 6:26Speaker 7: Well, you have to admit that this is a little unusual.
- 6:28Speaker 7: Somebody beats you up, slugs you, takes $ 800 from you,
- 6:30Speaker 7: and you don't want to do anything about it?
- 6:32Speaker 3: You're going to have to excuse me a minute.
- 6:34Speaker 10: I have one of my accordion students down the hall
- 6:36Speaker 10: in the practice room.
- 6:37Speaker 3: Almost time for him to go. I have to give
- 6:39Speaker 3: him his lesson for next week.
- 6:40Speaker 7: All right, you go right ahead.
- 6:41Speaker 3: It'll only be a minute.
- 6:46Speaker 2: How about that?
- 6:47Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Acts like he's scared to death.
- 6:50Speaker 7: Well, whoever it was, they gave him a going over.
- 6:53Speaker 7: Half of his head in bandages, face all swollen.
- 6:56Speaker 3: Sure something, Foley.
- 6:58Speaker 7: Well, he's not going to be much help unless we
- 7:00Speaker 7: can talk him into.
- 7:01Speaker 3: A crime report. Somebody's got to him. I'll bet on it. Oh,
- 7:04Speaker 3: hi there, kiddie.
- 7:05Speaker 7: Hi, kiddie.
- 7:07Speaker 2: I've been thinking it over, officers.
- 7:10Speaker 10: Sorry I had to come out here and go to
- 7:11Speaker 10: all this trouble, but I just assume forget the whole thing.
- 7:14Speaker 3: I'd only want to talk about it if you don't mind.
- 7:15Speaker 7: We don't mean to high pressure you, Butler, but we'd
- 7:17Speaker 7: like some kind of an explanation.
- 7:19Speaker 3: Can't you understand?
- 7:20Speaker 10: I just don't want to make a big fuss about it.
- 7:22Speaker 10: I'd like to have you go along with my feelings
- 7:24Speaker 10: in the matter. It's my affair, isn't it?
- 7:25Speaker 7: No, sir.
- 7:26Speaker 3: It's ours, too.
- 7:27Speaker 7: Half a dozen people like yourself have been beaten up
- 7:29Speaker 7: and robbed in this neighborhood all in the last five weeks. Now,
- 7:32Speaker 7: if we can find the thieves, we can put a
- 7:34Speaker 7: stop to it. We can make sure the same thing
- 7:36Speaker 7: doesn't happen to your neighbors.
- 7:37Speaker 10: Well, they're going to have to look out for themselves.
- 7:39Speaker 10: I'm not getting tied up in a big investigation. The
- 7:41Speaker 10: neighbors don't worry about me.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Pretty good a little further than that.
- 7:44Speaker 10: Huh?
- 7:44Speaker 2: You've been beaten up and robbed once.
- 7:46Speaker 3: How do you know it isn't going to happen again?
- 7:48Speaker 7: Well, it's not, that's all.
- 7:49Speaker 3: I'll make sure it doesn't. How?
- 7:51Speaker 7: What's going to stop the same thieves from knocking you
- 7:53Speaker 7: over again?
- 7:54Speaker 10: Look, if it's all the same to you, I want
- 7:55Speaker 10: to forget about this.
- 7:57Speaker 3: I'm going to have to be running along. It's getting late.
- 7:59Speaker 7: Now, just one more thing, Butler. When the doctor was
- 8:01Speaker 7: treating you the other night, this Dr. Hart, he says
- 8:03Speaker 7: you told him that you knew who the holdup men
- 8:04Speaker 7: were now. Is that right?
- 8:05Speaker 3: No, he got it all mixed up. I didn't mean
- 8:07Speaker 3: it that way. How did you mean it?
- 8:10Speaker 10: I'm in a funny position. I just can't explain that, Saul.
- 8:12Speaker 10: I can't take the chance.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Did the holdup men threaten?
- 8:15Speaker 3: I can't talk about it. Give me a break, please.
- 8:18Speaker 7: You're making a mistake, mister. Play ball with those thieves
- 8:20Speaker 7: and they'll ruin you.
- 8:21Speaker 3: It's not only me. It's my family, too. I'm not
- 8:23Speaker 3: going to take the chance.
- 8:24Speaker 7: If they threatened you and your family, you're taking more
- 8:26Speaker 7: of a chance keeping quiet about it. They'll bleed you white. Blackmail, robbery,
- 8:30Speaker 7: anything you can think of. Now, this has happened before.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Can't you see the spot I'm in? I know who
- 8:34Speaker 3: they are. I know what they can do. I got
- 8:35Speaker 3: a wife to think about.
- 8:37Speaker 8: Would you put your family in that position? You're buying
- 8:39Speaker 8: protection from a couple of hoods.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Now, figure it out. How much is it worth? How
- 8:43Speaker 2: far can you trust them?
- 8:44Speaker 3: If you pick them up, they'll know I told you.
- 8:46Speaker 3: I don't want anything to happen. Can't you see that
- 8:48Speaker 3: I haven't any choice? What else can I do?
- 8:49Speaker 7: Help us put the thieves where they belong. You'll have
- 8:52Speaker 7: all the protection you need until they're locked up.
- 8:53Speaker 2: It's a big order.
- 8:54Speaker 7: I don't know. You and your wife will be under
- 8:56Speaker 7: 24-hour guard. Now, that's a promise.
- 8:57Speaker 3: How long would that have to go on?
- 8:59Speaker 8: Long enough to bring them to trial and convict them.
- 9:01Speaker 3: Now, how about it? They warned me about telling the police.
- 9:04Speaker 3: They said they'd get both of us if I did,
- 9:06Speaker 3: me and my wife. Now, they meant it, too. They'd
- 9:08Speaker 3: get us.
- 9:08Speaker 7: What can you do about it? Get them first. After
- 9:14Speaker 7: another hour of talking, we finally persuaded the robbery victim,
- 9:17Speaker 7: Louis Butler, to come downtown with us. He dictated a
- 9:19Speaker 7: full statement about the holdup and filed a crime report.
- 9:22Speaker 7: He told us he'd been robbed and slugged late at
- 9:24Speaker 7: night a few blocks from his music studio. $ 820 had
- 9:28Speaker 7: been taken from him by two bandits, both of whom
- 9:30Speaker 7: were armed, both of whom he recognized. He said one
- 9:33Speaker 7: of the men was a Marvin Carter, a former bartender
- 9:35Speaker 7: at a neighborhood tavern. The other was Ralph Quincy, a
- 9:38Speaker 7: merchant seaman. We went across the street and met with
- 9:41Speaker 7: Deputy District Attorney Fred Henderson. The next day, the case
- 9:45Speaker 7: was presented to the grand jury and a true bill
- 9:46Speaker 7: was returned. The two suspects, Marvin Carter and Ralph Quincy,
- 9:50Speaker 7: were indicted on one count of armed robbery. That afternoon,
- 9:54Speaker 7: both of them were booked at the main jail and
- 9:56Speaker 7: then released after posting a required bail of $ 10, 000. 4.30 p.m.,
- 10:01Speaker 7: Ben and I went back to the office and met
- 10:03Speaker 7: with Captain Didion.
- 10:03Speaker 2: How are you making out on it? Pretty fair shape, Skipper.
- 10:08Speaker 8: The arraignment's set for two weeks from Thursday.
- 10:10Speaker 2: How about protection for the victim? Well, it's all set up.
- 10:12Speaker 7: Butler and his wife are under 24-hour guard, three teams
- 10:15Speaker 7: of men on it.
- 10:16Speaker 8: It means two thieves getting out on bail, it's not
- 10:18Speaker 8: going to make it any easier. Who are you working
- 10:20Speaker 8: with from the DA's office?
- 10:21Speaker 3: Henderson.
- 10:22Speaker 2: Seems to think we've got enough to convict both men.
- 10:24Speaker 3: What makes them so sure?
- 10:25Speaker 7: Well, for one thing, we've got a line on a
- 10:26Speaker 7: couple of good witnesses to the holdup.
- 10:29Speaker 3: Excuse me.
- 10:31Speaker 7: Robbery did end.
- 10:32Speaker 3: Yeah, Mike.
- 10:34Speaker 2: No, I'll check it before I leave.
- 10:35Speaker 7: Right.
- 10:37Speaker 3: What was that about witnesses?
- 10:38Speaker 7: A man by the name of Bartlett runs a drugstore.
- 10:41Speaker 7: He and his son were in the neighborhood when Louis
- 10:43Speaker 7: Butler was held up. They're supposed to have spotted the
- 10:45Speaker 7: two thieves running from the scene.
- 10:46Speaker 3: Have you talked to him yet?
- 10:47Speaker 8: Just over the phone. We've got an appointment with him
- 10:49Speaker 8: at 6 o'clock tonight. Take your statement. I guess I
- 10:52Speaker 8: don't have to tell you. Stay as close to the
- 10:54Speaker 8: thing as you can. If we miss this time, we
- 10:57Speaker 8: may not get another chance. You know as well as
- 11:00Speaker 8: anyone how tough it's been reaching these things.
- 11:02Speaker 7: Yeah? Well, we wouldn't be this far along if Butler
- 11:04Speaker 7: didn't decide to cooperate and file charges.
- 11:06Speaker 8: I wish I knew how many victims there are in
- 11:08Speaker 8: this thing just like Butler. People we don't even know about,
- 11:10Speaker 8: so scared they don't dare file charges.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Guess there's a dozen of them anyway. I can't figure it.
- 11:15Speaker 8: People hire a police force on salary to protect them
- 11:18Speaker 8: and their property, then they turn around and try to
- 11:19Speaker 8: make a deal with a bunch of hoods, buy them off.
- 11:23Speaker 2: How far have you gotten on the holdup gang?
- 11:24Speaker 7: What do you mean?
- 11:25Speaker 3: The two men you've got, Tad, Carter, and Quincy.
- 11:28Speaker 7: Anyone else working with them? Possible. Not sure yet. Both
- 11:31Speaker 7: Carter and Quincy have juvenile records. That's about it. We're
- 11:33Speaker 7: still checking on them.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Robbery, did he?
- 11:38Speaker 3: Yeah, Tom. Mm-hmm.
- 11:40Speaker 7: That's right.
- 11:41Speaker 3: No, I'll tell him.
- 11:42Speaker 2: They're here with me now.
- 11:44Speaker 7: Right.
- 11:44Speaker 3: Thank you. It started already. How's that?
- 11:47Speaker 2: The victim, Louis Butler. He got a phone call at
- 11:49Speaker 2: his house a few minutes ago.
- 11:50Speaker 7: Yeah. Figured it was one of the holdup gang.
- 11:52Speaker 3: They gave Butler a choice.
- 11:53Speaker 7: What'd he say? Either he drops the charges or they'll
- 11:56Speaker 7: kill him.
- 11:56Speaker 2: 5.30 p.m.
- 12:02Speaker 7: Captain Didion issued orders that the two suspects in the case,
- 12:05Speaker 7: Marvin Carter and Ralph Quincy, be placed under 24-hour surveillance.
- 12:09Speaker 7: An additional team of men was assigned to guard Louis Butler.
- 12:13Speaker 7: Each officer was carefully instructed to take all possible precautions
- 12:16Speaker 7: to prevent the robbery victim and his wife from being
- 12:18Speaker 7: harmed in any way. 6 p.m. Ben and I met
- 12:22Speaker 7: with the two witnesses to the holdup, a drugstore proprietor,
- 12:25Speaker 7: Sam Bartlett, and his teenage son, Harold. They told us
- 12:29Speaker 7: that they'd been in the immediate vicinity the night Butler
- 12:31Speaker 7: was robbed and that they'd gotten a good look at
- 12:33Speaker 7: the two gunmen as they ran from the scene of
- 12:35Speaker 7: the holdup. Bartlett and his son, Harold, identified the suspects
- 12:39Speaker 7: as Marvin Carter and Ralph Quincy. Statements were taken and
- 12:42Speaker 7: both witnesses were warned to maintain absolute secrecy about their
- 12:46Speaker 7: part in the case. Next day, we made arrangements to
- 12:49Speaker 7: have the druggist and his son subpoenaed for the Superior
- 12:52Speaker 7: Court arraignment. Six days went by. Thursday, October 17th, 8 a.m.
- 12:59Speaker 7: We checked in the office and found the message waiting
- 13:01Speaker 7: for us.
- 13:03Speaker 3: What is it, Joe?
- 13:05Speaker 7: The druggist's son, Harold Bartlett.
- 13:07Speaker 3: What about him?
- 13:08Speaker 7: Found him in an alley at 3 o'clock this morning.
- 13:10Speaker 3: What?
- 13:10Speaker 7: Slugged and beaten. Late that afternoon, Ben and I received
- 13:18Speaker 7: permission from the doctors to visit briefly with our witness,
- 13:21Speaker 7: 17-year-old Harold Bartlett. His injuries were painful, but not critical.
- 13:26Speaker 7: The beating he'd received was nothing less than brutal. His
- 13:29Speaker 7: left forearm had been broken, and he'd been beaten viciously
- 13:31Speaker 7: about the face and chest. He told us that he
- 13:34Speaker 7: was on his way home from a neighborhood movie just
- 13:36Speaker 7: before midnight, when two men jumped him from behind on
- 13:39Speaker 7: a deserted street.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Well, I drove around some, maybe five or ten minutes.
- 13:47Speaker 2: I lost about at least three men.
- 13:49Speaker 7: In the car. Why do you say that?
- 13:50Speaker 2: There were two in the backseat with me Somebody else
- 13:54Speaker 2: had to be doing the driving.
- 13:55Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 13:55Speaker 2: And it had to be a sedan or a club coupe.
- 13:58Speaker 7: I guess so, yeah.
- 14:00Speaker 2: After he drove around a while, he stopped the car
- 14:01Speaker 2: and then he began slugging me. Didn't say a word
- 14:04Speaker 2: the whole time. Just started slugging me. I asked him why.
- 14:09Speaker 2: He just kept slugging me.
- 14:11Speaker 3: I see.
- 14:13Speaker 2: At first, I think they were hitting me with their fist.
- 14:15Speaker 2: And it felt like something a lot harder. A piece
- 14:19Speaker 2: of iron or metal or something. That's when I grabbed
- 14:22Speaker 2: the cloth off of my face and I started to holler.
- 14:24Speaker 7: Mm-hmm. What happened then?
- 14:27Speaker 2: Oh, I guess nobody heard me.
- 14:29Speaker 3: Nobody came anyway.
- 14:30Speaker 2: One of the men swore at me and grabbed my arm.
- 14:34Speaker 3: It was something.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Sure sore. They didn't say anything to you all this time?
- 14:41Speaker 7: No.
- 14:41Speaker 2: I told them just before they pushed me out of
- 14:43Speaker 2: the car. It seemed like I was in that car
- 14:48Speaker 2: for hours. When they started to talk to you, Harry,
- 14:50Speaker 2: what did they say? It was about that robbery my
- 14:53Speaker 2: father and me saw. The one you talked to us
- 14:55Speaker 2: about last week?
- 14:55Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 14:56Speaker 7: What'd they say about it?
- 14:57Speaker 2: They said, maybe this will help you keep your mouth shut,
- 15:00Speaker 2: stay out of other people's business. They said that a
- 15:04Speaker 2: couple of times. They said a lot more had happened
- 15:06Speaker 2: to Dad and me if we went to the police,
- 15:09Speaker 2: if we were witnesses at that trial. Do you remember
- 15:11Speaker 2: if the men called each other by name?
- 15:14Speaker 3: No, I don't.
- 15:16Speaker 7: I don't remember anyway. Well, son, you remember when we
- 15:20Speaker 7: talked to you and your father last week, we told
- 15:22Speaker 7: you to say nothing about the case to anyone.
- 15:24Speaker 2: I remember, Sergeant.
- 15:25Speaker 7: I guess it's my fault. Well, did you tell other
- 15:28Speaker 7: people that you were a witness in the case? Did
- 15:30Speaker 7: you mention it in public?
- 15:31Speaker 2: I guess I did, yeah. I didn't think it was
- 15:35Speaker 2: that important.
- 15:36Speaker 3: I guess I.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Talked about it quite a bit. I'm sorry.
- 15:40Speaker 3: It's my fault. That's all right, Harry. If you remember
- 15:43Speaker 3: it from now on, it'll save a lot more trouble.
- 15:45Speaker 7: I remember, Sergeant.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Those two men last night scared me for a while.
- 15:48Speaker 2: I guess most of it was talking, huh?
- 15:52Speaker 3: How do you mean, son?
- 15:53Speaker 2: They were warning me about staying away from the cops.
- 15:56Speaker 2: They said they'd kill me and my dad if we
- 15:57Speaker 2: were witnesses.
- 15:58Speaker 7: Mm-hmm.
- 15:59Speaker 3: They were probably just trying to scare us, huh? They
- 16:01Speaker 3: were fooling?
- 16:01Speaker 7: Well, you had a sample last night, son.
- 16:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:04Speaker 7: Were they fooling? After we left Harry Bartlett, we went
- 16:12Speaker 7: back to the office and arranged for a 24-hour guard
- 16:14Speaker 7: to be assigned to the teenage boy and his father...
- 16:17Speaker 7: A thorough investigation of the attack on the boy failed
- 16:19Speaker 7: to turn up any leads. On the surface, the two
- 16:22Speaker 7: robbery suspects, Carter and Quincy, were not involved. During the
- 16:26Speaker 7: week that followed, we heard of no further threats or attacks,
- 16:29Speaker 7: either on the victim, Louis Butler, or the witnesses involved
- 16:32Speaker 7: in the case. Ben and I worked with Deputy District
- 16:35Speaker 7: Attorney Henderson, preparing the case against the two suspects. Two
- 16:39Speaker 7: days before the trial opened in Superior Court, we got
- 16:41Speaker 7: an urgent call.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I know, but how'd it happen?
- 16:45Speaker 3: Mm-hmm. Yeah.
- 16:46Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 16:48Speaker 3: You're all right, Tom. Thanks. What's the trouble?
- 16:51Speaker 2: Couldn't be worse.
- 16:52Speaker 3: No victim. What do you mean? Mr. and Mrs. Butler
- 16:55Speaker 3: have disappeared.
- 16:55Speaker 7: You are listening to Dragnet.
- 17:10Speaker 5: From beginning to end, Dragnet is the authentic story of
- 17:14Speaker 5: your police force in action.
- 17:16Speaker 4: Now, from beginning to end, the Fatima story. Actual convincing
- 17:20Speaker 4: proof that in Fatima, the difference is quality.
- 17:24Speaker 5: Quality of tobaccos. The finest domestic and Turkish varieties, extra
- 17:29Speaker 5: mild and superbly blended. They give you a much different,
- 17:33Speaker 5: much better.
- 17:34Speaker 3: Flavor and aroma.
- 17:36Speaker 4: Quality of manufacture. Smooth, round, perfect cigarettes. Rolled in the
- 17:41Speaker 4: finest paper money can buy. Manufactured in the newest and
- 17:45Speaker 4: most modern of all cigarette factories.
- 17:47Speaker 5: Quality even to the appearance of the bright, clean, golden
- 17:51Speaker 5: yellow package. Carefully wrapped and sealed. to bring you Fatima's rich, fresh,
- 17:56Speaker 5: extra mild flavor. Because of its quality, its extra mildness,
- 18:01Speaker 5: its better flavor and aroma, more long cigarette smokers are
- 18:05Speaker 5: now insisting on Fatima than ever before. So if you
- 18:09Speaker 5: smoke a long cigarette, compare Fatima. You'll find they now
- 18:14Speaker 5: cost the same, but your first puff will tell.
- 18:17Speaker 2: You, Ah, that's different.
- 18:20Speaker 5: Yes, in Fatima, the difference is quality.
- 18:24Speaker 3: Insist on Fatima.
- 18:26Speaker 5: Start enjoying the quality king-size cigarette.
- 18:30Speaker 3: Fatima.
- 18:31Speaker 4: Best of all long cigarettes.
- 18:33Speaker 7: Fatima. Tuesday, November 5th, 9 a.m. The trial of robbery
- 18:45Speaker 7: suspects Marvin Carter and Ralph Quincy opened in Superior Court,
- 18:48Speaker 7: Department 88. The complaining witness, Louis Butler, failed to appear.
- 18:52Speaker 7: For two solid days, we'd been busy checking all of
- 18:55Speaker 7: the butlers' friends and relatives in the city. They couldn't help.
- 18:58Speaker 7: Each time the butlers had left their residence, they'd been
- 19:01Speaker 7: under surveillance. We'd had an understanding with them that in
- 19:04Speaker 7: the event that they were in their automobile and for
- 19:06Speaker 7: some reason the officers assigned to them lost them in traffic,
- 19:09Speaker 7: the butlers would immediately return to their home. On the
- 19:12Speaker 7: night of November 3rd, under the pretext of going to
- 19:15Speaker 7: a neighborhood theater, the butlers made a right-hand turn from
- 19:18Speaker 7: a left-hand lane of traffic, so it became obvious that
- 19:20Speaker 7: they were trying to elude the officers following them. A
- 19:23Speaker 7: check was made at their home as prearranged, and they
- 19:26Speaker 7: failed to return. When they failed to appear for the trial,
- 19:29Speaker 7: a bench warrant was issued by Superior Court for the
- 19:31Speaker 7: missing couple. Deputy District Attorney Henderson asked the court to
- 19:35Speaker 7: grant a delay in order to find the butlers. It
- 19:38Speaker 7: was granted. In the meantime, we'd gotten out a broadcast
- 19:41Speaker 7: and an APB. Missing persons detail helped out in the search.
- 19:45Speaker 7: Still no sign. Tuesday, November 12th, 11 a.m. Deputy D.A.
- 19:49Speaker 7: Henderson phoned us from the Hall of Justice.
- 19:51Speaker 3: When was that, Fred? Is that right?
- 19:55Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 19:56Speaker 3: Hey, well, thanks a lot.
- 19:59Speaker 7: What did he have to say?
- 20:00Speaker 8: The attorney for Carter and Quincy asked the court for dismissal.
- 20:04Speaker 8: No complaining witness.
- 20:05Speaker 7: Well, did the judge rule on it yet?
- 20:06Speaker 3: Yeah. Case dismissed.
- 20:13Speaker 7: No matter how guilty the two men might have seemed,
- 20:16Speaker 7: there was nothing further anyone could do. Without a complaining witness,
- 20:19Speaker 7: our case was finished. The two suspects, Carter and Quincy,
- 20:22Speaker 7: were released from custody. In a few days, Quincy left
- 20:26Speaker 7: town for the east. Carter remained in the city. The
- 20:29Speaker 7: search for Mr.
- 20:29Speaker 3: And Mrs.
- 20:30Speaker 7: Butler went on. No sign of either one of them.
- 20:33Speaker 7: December came, and then the Christmas holidays, New Year's. On
- 20:37Speaker 7: January 16th, Louis Butler suddenly reappeared back in town and
- 20:40Speaker 7: surrendered on the bench warrant. They explained to the judge
- 20:43Speaker 7: that because of the numerous threats on their lives just
- 20:45Speaker 7: before the trial, they were afraid to appear and that
- 20:49Speaker 7: they left the state without telling anyone. The judge gave
- 20:52Speaker 7: them a lecture and a warning and dismissed charges. Another
- 20:55Speaker 7: month passed, February and then March. On April 2nd, we
- 20:59Speaker 7: got word from Denver, Colorado, that one of our former
- 21:02Speaker 7: robbery suspects, Ralph Quincy, had shot and killed a 24-year-old
- 21:05Speaker 7: policeman while attempting a robbery in that city. Quincy was
- 21:09Speaker 7: tried and convicted of murder and received a life term.
- 21:13Speaker 7: In the meantime, we'd heard little or nothing about the
- 21:15Speaker 7: other former robbery suspect, Marvin Carter. Another two months passed.
- 21:19Speaker 7: Spring months wore on into summer. Monday, July 8th, 8 a.m.
- 21:25Speaker 3: Friday, Romero, see you in a minute.
- 21:27Speaker 6: Yes, Kipper.
- 21:30Speaker 7: You want to sit down? I've got something for you.
- 21:32Speaker 3: Here.
- 21:33Speaker 8: A holdup victim, a man by the name of Sheridan,
- 21:35Speaker 8: came in late last night, filed this crime report here.
- 21:38Speaker 7: Have a look. Thank you.
- 21:40Speaker 3: Have a seat, Joe.
- 21:42Speaker 8: You can notice there it happened in the same area
- 21:44Speaker 8: where we had that rash of holdups last fall.
- 21:46Speaker 3: Yeah, I see.
- 21:47Speaker 7: Victim robbed and beaten.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Suspects used the same approach, same M.O., followed it right
- 21:51Speaker 2: down the line.
- 21:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:53Speaker 8: Victim warned not to contact police. Bodily harm threatened if
- 21:57Speaker 8: victim did so.
- 21:58Speaker 7: How about the descriptions of the holdup men here? The
- 21:59Speaker 7: victim pretty sure about them?
- 22:01Speaker 2: Gaffney handled the report. The victim said he got a
- 22:03Speaker 2: good look at.
- 22:03Speaker 3: One of the thieves.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Gaffney gave him a bunch of mug shots to look at.
- 22:06Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 22:08Speaker 2: Here's the one he picked out of the lot.
- 22:09Speaker 5: Thanks.
- 22:09Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 22:12Speaker 3: Have a look, Joe.
- 22:13Speaker 2: Marvin Carter.
- 22:18Speaker 7: As soon as the robbery report had come in, an
- 22:20Speaker 7: immediate check had been made of Marvin Carter's last known address,
- 22:23Speaker 7: an apartment in the West Pico district. The landlord revealed
- 22:26Speaker 7: that the suspect had moved at least two months before.
- 22:28Speaker 7: We got out a broadcast and an APB on him.
- 22:32Speaker 7: Together with Sergeants Gonzalez and Henry, Ben and I started
- 22:35Speaker 7: on the systematic check of all of Carter's known friends, relatives,
- 22:38Speaker 7: and associates. After that, we started on the places he
- 22:40Speaker 7: was known to frequent. Hotels, bars, restaurants. No luck. Two
- 22:45Speaker 7: weeks went by. There were no further reports of robberies
- 22:48Speaker 7: where the M.O. of the criminal matched that of Carter's. Tuesday,
- 22:52Speaker 7: July 26th, 2 p.m. We got a call from one
- 22:55Speaker 7: of our informants, Bertie Simmons, who told us that he
- 22:59Speaker 7: might have some information for us. He said it concerned
- 23:02Speaker 7: Marvin Carter. He told us he'd meet us at MacArthur
- 23:05Speaker 7: Park on the 6th Street side at 2.30 p.m. 2.50 p.m.
- 23:13Speaker 2: You'll have to excuse me, Sergeant. Sorry I'm late.
- 23:15Speaker 9: I have to move from that other place. Things haven't
- 23:18Speaker 9: been going too good for me.
- 23:19Speaker 1: That's all right, Bertie.
- 23:20Speaker 2: What's the matter?
- 23:20Speaker 3: No luck with the horses?
- 23:21Speaker 2: Yeah, a lot of luck.
- 23:22Speaker 3: It's all bad.
- 23:24Speaker 9: If there's a pig in the race, I have to
- 23:26Speaker 9: bet on him every time. Getting so I can't even
- 23:28Speaker 9: pick him.
- 23:29Speaker 2: To show anymore. I don't know.
- 23:30Speaker 7: What else is new with you, Bertie? No job yet?
- 23:32Speaker 9: No, I'm still looking down around some of the joints,
- 23:35Speaker 9: South Main, Alameda, keeping it near the ground.
- 23:37Speaker 7: Mm-hmm.
- 23:38Speaker 3: Want a smoke?
- 23:39Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks. Don't mind if I do.
- 23:40Speaker 7: Here you.
- 23:43Speaker 3: Go.
- 23:43Speaker 7: Light for.
- 23:46Speaker 3: You.
- 23:46Speaker 2: What have you heard, Bertie?
- 23:48Speaker 3: Anything that'll help?
- 23:49Speaker 2: That Marvin Carter you're still looking for him, aren't you?
- 23:52Speaker 3: That's right. Any rumble?
- 23:53Speaker 9: I heard it last night, having a beer downtown. I
- 23:56Speaker 9: knew you fellas were in a little bind on the thing.
- 23:58Speaker 9: I always like to help you when you're in a bind.
- 24:01Speaker 3: Well, what'd you hear, Bert?
- 24:02Speaker 9: Carter's still in town, hiding out. Like I say, I
- 24:05Speaker 9: always like to help you out when you need it.
- 24:07Speaker 8: Mm-hmm.
- 24:08Speaker 9: I know what it is to be in a bind.
- 24:10Speaker 9: That's when you appreciate help most. I'm kind of in
- 24:13Speaker 9: a bind right now.
- 24:14Speaker 2: A little short, you know?
- 24:16Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 24:18Speaker 7: A couple of dollars, Bert. That's all I have on me.
- 24:20Speaker 7: Will that help you out any?
- 24:21Speaker 9: You saved my life, Sergeant. Tell you the truth, I
- 24:24Speaker 9: didn't know where dinner was coming from tonight. No need
- 24:27Speaker 9: telling you. I appreciate it.
- 24:29Speaker 2: What was this you heard about, Carter? Still in town.
- 24:31Speaker 2: It's a place down by Venice, near the beach. Mm-hmm.
- 24:34Speaker 9: Carter's been seen there once, twice lately. It's a little
- 24:38Speaker 9: seafood joint. Beer and clams.
- 24:41Speaker 2: Down by the beach.
- 24:42Speaker 7: Well, now, is that somebody's story, or is it the
- 24:43Speaker 7: real thing?
- 24:44Speaker 2: It's the real thing, Sergeant.
- 24:45Speaker 8: You know me better than that. No phony leads from me.
- 24:48Speaker 8: Where's Carter supposed to be staying down there, do you know?
- 24:50Speaker 2: Well, I do and I don't, I guess.
- 24:52Speaker 3: What do you mean?
- 24:53Speaker 9: This mooch who told me about Carter last night, he
- 24:56Speaker 9: didn't know the address, but he described the place Carter's
- 24:58Speaker 9: supposed to be hiding out in.
- 25:01Speaker 2: I know the joint he means.
- 25:02Speaker 7: But you don't know the address.
- 25:03Speaker 9: No, but I can point out the place he means.
- 25:05Speaker 9: It's a shack right along the speedway down there, down
- 25:09Speaker 9: by the beach.
- 25:09Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 25:10Speaker 2: You want to run down there with us now? Sure,
- 25:12Speaker 2: I'll find it out for you. I'm not going near it, though.
- 25:14Speaker 7: Why do you say that?
- 25:15Speaker 2: I don't want to mix with it, that's all. I
- 25:17Speaker 2: got the word.
- 25:17Speaker 7: What do you mean?
- 25:18Speaker 2: Carter. Won't be an easy one to take.
- 25:21Speaker 7: How do you know?
- 25:22Speaker 2: He's got a gun.
- 25:26Speaker 7: 2.55 p.m. Along with our informant, Bertie Simmons, Ben and
- 25:29Speaker 7: I drove down to the beach town of Venice. Bertie
- 25:32Speaker 7: pointed out a brown wooden frame cottage where Carter was
- 25:35Speaker 7: supposed to be hiding out. While Bertie waited in the car,
- 25:39Speaker 7: Ben and I checked it out. There was nobody at home,
- 25:41Speaker 7: but there was plenty of evidence inside the cottage that
- 25:44Speaker 7: Carter was living there. I went back down the street
- 25:47Speaker 7: to where we parked our car. I kept an eye
- 25:49Speaker 7: on the cottage while Ben got to a phone to
- 25:51Speaker 7: call the office.
- 25:55Speaker 2: Pretty down here, huh, Sergeant?
- 25:57Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a nice day.
- 25:58Speaker 2: I don't get out in the air enough. I think
- 26:01Speaker 2: that's my trouble. Some of this good ocean air makes
- 26:04Speaker 2: you feel like a million.
- 26:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:07Speaker 2: Did you notice the place where your partner went to
- 26:09Speaker 2: phone down the street there?
- 26:12Speaker 7: Yeah, what about it?
- 26:13Speaker 2: You see the sign, Beer and Clan? Right over the door.
- 26:17Speaker 2: Beer and Clan?
- 26:19Speaker 3: Yeah, mm-hmm.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Best in the city, I know. I've been there. Only great.
- 26:24Speaker 2: Good beer for a dine, fresh clams. Nothing better. You
- 26:29Speaker 2: like clams?
- 26:30Speaker 7: Yeah, they're all right once in a while.
- 26:32Speaker 2: What am I going to do if you two have
- 26:34Speaker 2: to wait here all night?
- 26:35Speaker 7: Well, we'll get you back to town, Berton. We'll figure
- 26:38Speaker 7: out something for you.
- 26:38Speaker 3: All right, Ben.
- 26:40Speaker 7: Did you get a hold of the captain? Yeah.
- 26:44Speaker 8: Marvin Carter was picked up downtown 20 minutes ago.
- 26:47Speaker 3: What? Yeah, he was driving a rented car. A traffic
- 26:50Speaker 3: unit picked him up.
- 26:51Speaker 7: Well, they tabbed him on his description?
- 26:52Speaker 3: Not at first.
- 26:53Speaker 8: The reason they noticed him was because he was double
- 26:55Speaker 8: parked on a busy street and they pulled him over
- 26:57Speaker 8: and got a better look at him.
- 26:58Speaker 3: I did.
- 26:59Speaker 7: Any trouble with him?
- 27:00Speaker 3: None at all.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Got him booked at Maine Jail. See, that's sure too bad,
- 27:04Speaker 2: isn't it?
- 27:05Speaker 3: What do you mean, Burke? It's your case, isn't it?
- 27:07Speaker 2: How long you fellas been working on it? Just about
- 27:10Speaker 2: a year, huh, Joe?
- 27:11Speaker 7: Yeah, just about.
- 27:12Speaker 9: Coming all this way for nothing. You're ready to make
- 27:15Speaker 9: the pension and somebody else does it for you. Must
- 27:18Speaker 9: be kind of disappointing, huh? All that time, all that work.
- 27:21Speaker 3: Well, Carter's in jail.
- 27:22Speaker 7: That's the main thing. I guess we better drive back in, huh, Bill?
- 27:26Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:26Speaker 9: Say, just a minute, Sergeant. No use coming all this
- 27:30Speaker 9: way for nothing. What if you do me a favor?
- 27:32Speaker 3: What's that, Burke?
- 27:34Speaker 2: That sign down the street.
- 27:35Speaker 3: What?
- 27:36Speaker 2: The blue and white sign.
- 27:37Speaker 4: Bear and Clam.
- 27:38Speaker 2: I wonder if you could drop me off right in front.
- 27:42Speaker 2: Bear and Clam? Oh, yeah, Bird, all right. Sure nice
- 27:46Speaker 2: of you. Just like I was saying.
- 27:47Speaker 7: What's that?
- 27:48Speaker 2: No use coming all this way for nothing.
- 27:51Speaker 3: The End.
- 27:58Speaker 4: The story you have just heard was true. Only the
- 28:01Speaker 4: names were changed to protect the innocent.
- 28:03Speaker 5: On October 29th, trial was held in Superior Court, Department 86,
- 28:07Speaker 5: City and County of Los Angeles, State of California. In
- 28:10Speaker 5: a moment, the.
- 28:10Speaker 3: Results of that trial.
- 28:12Speaker 4: And now, here is our star, Jack Webb.
- 28:14Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 28:15Speaker 7: Friends, let me tell you how to size up king-size cigarettes. First,
- 28:19Speaker 7: take a Fatima, and then any other king-size. Now, side
- 28:22Speaker 7: by side, the two look alike, but they're not. because
- 28:25Speaker 7: no other king-size cigarette has Fatima quality.
- 28:28Speaker 3: That's right.
- 28:29Speaker 7: In Fatima, the difference is quality. Quality that results from
- 28:33Speaker 7: a blend of the finest domestic and Turkish tobaccos. Quality
- 28:37Speaker 7: that gives you extra mildness, a much better flavor and aroma. Remember,
