- 0:02You're listening to the
- 0:03Play Therapy Parenting Podcast with Dr. Brenna Hicks.
- 0:09Hi, I'm Dr. Brenna Hicks, The Kid Counselor.
- 0:11This is the Play Therapy Parenting Podcast where I give
- 0:14you insight awareness and enlightenment about your parenting
- 0:17and your relationship with your kids.
- 0:19In today's episode, we are dealing with the final of the four pillars
- 0:24and the practical application
- 0:27of your use of these pillars at home.
- 0:30And so we kind of went through the pillars individually and
- 0:33now we are going through how you can actually implement them
- 0:37in your day to day with your kids whenever
- 0:41they're
- 0:42in the car with you, they're in the house with you, they're, you know,
- 0:45driving to and from extracurriculars, whatever
- 0:48where you can actually find opportunities to implement.
- 0:51So we're talking about the final one, which is encouragement today.
- 0:55And if you remember in the encouragement explanation,
- 0:59there's a huge difference between praise and encouragement
- 1:03wherein
- 1:04you are never going to give a value
- 1:06laden word.
- 1:07The easiest way to remember what a value laden word is is that it has an opposite.
- 1:12So good, opposite is bad. Awesome, opposite is awful
- 1:17and there's always the opposite spectrum for whatever value Laden word,
- 1:23which would be praise.
- 1:24And so when we're thinking about this and we've,
- 1:26we've learned about the value of encouraging
- 1:29how it's empowering, it's esteem building.
- 1:32It helps a child feel that they have a measure of control over their circumstances.
- 1:36And the beauty of that is as kids do not
- 1:40fight so hard for power and control.
- 1:43It's because they know that they are constantly given
- 1:46a measure of power and control through encouragement.
- 1:49And
- 1:50they really do feel that as you give
- 1:53them opportunities to think about what they've done,
- 1:58they feel empowered enough that they don't always have to fight for power.
- 2:03And there's kind of a self fulfilling prophecy there.
- 2:06I'm proud of myself. I worked hard. I didn't give up.
- 2:10And that makes them feel that they have power and they do feel control
- 2:13they have control over their circumstances
- 2:15and then it doesn't become such a power struggle.
- 2:19So
- 2:19when we're thinking about how to practically use this at home,
- 2:23here are some things that I think will be really helpful and you should be able to,
- 2:28I think implement this probably easier than the other three because there are
- 2:33always so many opportunities to encourage throughout the day with your kids.
- 2:37The path to calm, confident, and in control parenting starts now
- 2:47your easiest thing to do
- 2:50to ensure that you are encouraging rather than
- 2:52praising is to start with the word you.
- 2:54We talked about this before.
- 2:55But when we're thinking about how we're going to do this on a day to day basis.
- 3:00Just start with the word you for almost anything that you say
- 3:03to your kids because that means that it aligns with reflecting feelings,
- 3:06it aligns with limit setting and it aligns with choice giving.
- 3:11Therefore that is your go to start with you and you'll be on the right track.
- 3:16So you,
- 3:18and then what effort they contributed,
- 3:23you didn't give up, you kept trying,
- 3:26you figured it out,
- 3:28you did it, you got it, you have a plan, you know what to do.
- 3:33Notice that they are not about
- 3:36you.
- 3:37It's not about your opinion. It's not about what you think.
- 3:40It's not about your evaluation.
- 3:42It has nothing to do with you whatsoever. It is solely focused on the child
- 3:47and the power of that is that kids are constantly doing things
- 3:52all day, every day.
- 3:54So this is one where you could probably do this every 30 seconds.
- 3:58If you really focused on this skill at home,
- 4:01they are constantly going to give you opportunities to encourage them.
- 4:06And as you are encouraging them,
- 4:08you start with the word you and you make sure that it is about their contributions,
- 4:13their efforts
- 4:14and what they are working on
- 4:16and that way as they
- 4:20are trying to ride their bike without training wheels
- 4:23as they are trying to complete their homework,
- 4:25even though they're frustrated
- 4:27as they are
- 4:30doing their chores when they've been asked to,
- 4:32as they
- 4:35are running in baseball practice.
- 4:37And they're exhausted by the time that practice is over.
- 4:41Notice that in every single one of these scenarios
- 4:44you can use encouragement
- 4:47and the point of doing so
- 4:50is it allows the child to self reflect?
- 4:53Because if we say
- 4:55good job bud,
- 4:58all the child hears is mom or dad or whomever loves me thinks that I did a good job
- 5:05if you say
- 5:06you kept going and you didn't give up.
- 5:09Now, all of a sudden the child is forced to evaluate self.
- 5:14Did I keep going?
- 5:15Did I persevere?
- 5:17Did I not give up? Did I continue until it was over?
- 5:21Yes, I did
- 5:23and notice that that develops self esteem.
- 5:27You get a sense of who you are when someone serves as the looking glass for you.
- 5:31And in an episode, a long, long time ago,
- 5:34we've talked about actually several episodes.
- 5:36We've talked about the pygmalion effect.
- 5:38We've talked about self fulfilling prophecy.
- 5:40We've talked about looking glass self.
- 5:41So if you are not familiar with those concepts,
- 5:43please go back and look through the archives of
- 5:46episodes and you'll be able to listen to those.
- 5:48But the power of self concept
- 5:51is that a child, self concept is developed
- 5:55because of what other people communicate.
- 5:58So if you were saying
- 5:59you worked really hard, you didn't give up.
- 6:02The child is internalizing that message and then is forced to reconcile it.
- 6:07In other words, did I actually keep trying?
- 6:11Did I persevere?
- 6:13Did I give up and she has no idea what she's talking about.
- 6:17If, what you say,
- 6:19aligns with the child's truth and aligns with the child's experience,
- 6:23they develop a healthy and appropriate self concept.
- 6:27I'm a child that doesn't give up.
- 6:29I'm a child that keeps going until I figure something out
- 6:32I can problem solve.
- 6:34I have tenacity.
- 6:36I'm willing to do hard things.
- 6:39Notice that self concept comes out of all of those internal processing.
- 6:45If we say you're awesome,
- 6:48that doesn't require any processing.
- 6:50Although your child might in fact be awesome. I have an awesome kid too.
- 6:54But when we say that to a child, it does not have the same impact.
- 6:59So the idea of encouragement
- 7:02and also esteem building because they kind of go together
- 7:06is that you are constantly focusing on what the child contributes
- 7:10and the effort that they're putting forth
- 7:12and saying it out loud back to them
- 7:15in a response
- 7:17because the best way for a child to truly know who they are, accept who they are,
- 7:22value who they are.
- 7:24The best way to do that is to encourage them.
- 7:28And it takes you out of the mix. There's no evaluation,
- 7:32there's no expectation,
- 7:34there's no opinion given.
- 7:36It is truly just an acknowledgment of the child and what the child chose to do.
- 7:42And that is very, very
- 7:44informative for a child
- 7:46and it really allows them to ponder
- 7:50is this what I believe about myself
- 7:53and that's what we want for our kids is that they have a healthy sense of identity.
- 7:57They know who they are, they know what they're capable of
- 8:00and their self concept is accurate.
- 8:03There are lots of adults in this world that have no sense of self concept.
- 8:07They think they are one type of person and everyone
- 8:10else thinks they are a totally different type of person.
- 8:13That's lack of self concept development. That's lack of identity development.
- 8:19When we praise kids, they don't get the benefit of self concept and identity.
- 8:25So that's why it's so important to make sure that we're using encouragement.
- 8:28So I hope you find that helpful.
- 8:30I hope that you are able to challenge yourself to encourage your children this week.
- 8:33Keep in mind though, this is probably the easiest one.
- 8:37They give you as many opportunities as possible
- 8:40throughout the week as you can have compared to the other skills.
- 8:43So focus this week on using encouragement every time your child does something
- 8:48you can encourage them.
- 8:50And if you start with you, you're probably on the right track. So
- 8:53hope that that will kind of
- 8:55pep talk you to give that a shot this week.
