- 0:22Hi, team. Welcome to the show.
- 0:24I'm so glad you're here. Thank you for listening.
- 0:26I'm excited about this episode today.
- 0:29I want to talk about this idea of an identity shift,
- 0:34specifically around getting to your next level, reaching your
- 0:37potential, sort of getting to the next stage, the next dream
- 0:42that you have. And what it requires, and
- 0:45oftentimes what I think it requires, is a shift in our
- 0:49perceived identity, who we believe that we are, and the
- 0:53truths that we believe to be true about ourselves.
- 0:55This is an issue that's been coming up for a lot of my
- 0:58coaching clients. I don't know if it's the season,
- 1:00I don't know if it's the year, I don't know if it's the time of
- 1:03the world. But there's so many of my
- 1:06clients, clients who work for big companies like Amazon or
- 1:09Intel, Coinbase, Nike, big corporations that are
- 1:12competitive. And also where it can be really
- 1:15easy to get lost or overlooked because there's just a sheer
- 1:18number of people who work there. And there's so many people who
- 1:21are interviewing for these roles.
- 1:24These clients are wanting to progress in their career,
- 1:27they're wanting to get promoted, they're wanting to get to their
- 1:29next level. And we are talking so often
- 1:32about the challenges that they're facing when they're
- 1:34trying to do that. And the question just becomes,
- 1:37how do I get to that place? How do I get to that next level?
- 1:41And the focus of these conversations is identity and
- 1:45how they shift. They have to shift from the old
- 1:50identity that they were embodying to a new identity that
- 1:54matches the level of this role that they want to win.
- 1:59And this is true of anybody. It doesn't have to be with
- 2:01career or business. It can be something that you're
- 2:04maybe you're trying to step into a new way of being as a partner,
- 2:08a spouse, maybe as a parent. This really encompasses
- 2:11everybody think the universal draw desire within us is to grow
- 2:17and expand and to reach our potential.
- 2:19And so it's important to talk about the challenges that we
- 2:22face in doing that and how we might manage them and and
- 2:25overcome them. I'm reading this awesome book
- 2:27right now. It's called The Great Work of
- 2:30Your Life by Stephen Cope, and it's all about Dharma.
- 2:34And Dharma is what he describes as being sort of our unique
- 2:37individual purpose in life. It's specific to us.
- 2:42And when we are living in our Dharma, our life's work, it
- 2:46creates a life that is fulfilling and purposeful and
- 2:49impactful. And I love this book.
- 2:52But in the beginning of it, he says when I think about what my
- 2:56biggest fear is right now, he says, my biggest fear is I'm
- 2:59afraid that I'll die without having lived fully.
- 3:04And when I read this, I was like, Oh my God, this guy is in
- 3:08my brain because you guys know, I'm always thinking and talking
- 3:12about, oh, at end of life, you don't want to have these big 5
- 3:17regrets. You don't want to be thinking
- 3:18about the life you didn't get a chance to live or the dreams
- 3:21that you didn't get to fulfill or the impact that you didn't
- 3:23get to have. I'm always thinking about 50
- 3:27years down the line, 40 years down the line, whatever it might
- 3:30be, what will I be thinking and saying about my life?
- 3:34And what types of regrets might I have so that in this moment,
- 3:38right now, in present day, I can change the course.
- 3:42I can create the action that I need so that I'm not thinking
- 3:45that way down the line. And Stephen Cope is thinking
- 3:49about the same thing. He's saying I'm afraid that I'll
- 3:50die without having lived fully. He says, yeah, I'm afraid of
- 3:54pain. I'm afraid of death.
- 3:56But mostly right now, I'm afraid that I may be missing some
- 4:00magnificent possibility and that perhaps I have not risked enough
- 4:05to find it, that maybe I've lived too safe a life.
- 4:08And that just deeply resonates with me.
- 4:10And I think it deeply resonates with so many people because when
- 4:14I'm leading workshops for companies, I often pose this
- 4:17question. Who in this room feels like they
- 4:21have this potential that they want to live up to, but they're
- 4:24not sure how to get it out. They're not sure how to get
- 4:26there. They're not sure how to get to
- 4:28their next level. Every time I ask that question,
- 4:31who in this room feels like they have a next level and they can't
- 4:34live up to it or they can't get out there?
- 4:36Every hand in the room goes up into the air.
- 4:38Everybody, everybody raises their hand.
- 4:41And I find that so interesting because there's so many
- 4:44different people that I get the experience to talk to, and yet
- 4:48they are all having the same thought.
- 4:51And it's similar to the thought that Stephen Coke articulated.
- 4:55I'm afraid that I'll die without having lived fully.
- 4:58How do I reach my potential? How do I create this life that I
- 5:01so desire? And so even though there's so
- 5:03many different ways to approach this question and there's so
- 5:07many different ideas and tactics that we could discuss, what I
- 5:10want to talk about today is this idea of making a shift in your
- 5:15identity. Because so often right now the
- 5:18conversation that I'm having with my clients is I'm in this
- 5:22role here and I would like to get to a senior level leadership
- 5:27role, or I would like to go from manager to director, or I would
- 5:30like to get to AVP level. What we're talking about is, OK,
- 5:36what's required of somebody in that role?
- 5:38What are the characteristics? What are they?
- 5:40How do they think, how do they speak?
- 5:42How do they communicate? How do they behave?
- 5:44How do they lead? And how does that contrast with
- 5:47the role that you're in now? It's very common for people to
- 5:51be pigeonholed into the role that they are currently residing
- 5:55in. And just a specific example, a
- 5:57client, she works for Amazon, she's a generator.
- 6:01They call her a workhorse in her role because they can give her a
- 6:05project and she will just crack it out and get it done.
- 6:07And they love that reliability. They love that she's so
- 6:11hardworking. They feel like they can hand her
- 6:13anything and she can handle it. But the problem is that she
- 6:18hasn't been able to advance in the way that she's wanted to.
- 6:21She's been looked over for a couple of promotions.
- 6:23And this is so common in work culture.
- 6:26And so the conversation turned to what is it that is happening
- 6:30for you now that is preventing you from getting to that next
- 6:34level? And what it comes down to is the
- 6:37identity of a workhorse is not necessarily the identity that
- 6:41they're looking for, for a leader.
- 6:43And to be able to make that leap, there has to be a shift.
- 6:47Anytime we're thinking about getting to a quote UN quote,
- 6:50next level, we can think about that identity as having its own
- 6:54characteristics and ways of being.
- 6:56The issue that we run into is we think that once we get to the
- 7:00position or the role, once we reach the place where that new
- 7:04identity is required, that's when you begin to exude those
- 7:07characteristics. So if you want to go from a
- 7:10workhorse to a senior leader, the thought that happened so
- 7:14often is a once I get into that senior leadership role, I'm
- 7:17going to start behaving that way.
- 7:18But how do you create the bridge from workhorse to leader?
- 7:21You have to start exuding those characteristics now.
- 7:24So if a client wants to be promoted out of a junior level
- 7:26role into a senior leadership role, they unconsciously or
- 7:30consciously think that once they get there, they'll just step
- 7:33into that identity of that higher role.
- 7:36But we have it all backwards. We have to 1st shift our
- 7:39identity to that of where we are wanting to go.
- 7:43That's what creates the bridge. We have to start thinking,
- 7:46behaving, communicating, and self managing like we are
- 7:50already in that higher level. If you don't start to embody
- 7:55that new identity first, it's harder for people to see you
- 7:59that way, so then it's harder for them to promote you, or it's
- 8:02harder for them to choose you, or it's harder to create renewed
- 8:05trust in a marriage or in parenting.
- 8:08And from an energetic standpoint, it's hard for things
- 8:11to move in the direction you want if you haven't yet embodied
- 8:15those new characteristics of that new identity.
- 8:18Because you're saying that you want these things that are out
- 8:21there, but you're behaving and you're thinking in the old way.
- 8:26So there's incongruence there. There's a misalignment between
- 8:30what you desire and dream of and how you're showing up in your
- 8:34day-to-day. This always reminds me of a time
- 8:39when I first became certified to be a coach.
- 8:41My mentor said to me, if you're going to do this, you're going
- 8:46to have to really claim it. And what she was referring to is
- 8:49the fact that in the coaching world, there's a lot of coaches.
- 8:53There are just hundreds of coaches out there.
- 8:55It's become a very prolific, saturated market.
- 8:57And it's great because, trust me, everybody needs a coach.
- 9:00But she said you got to go out there and claim it if you are
- 9:03going to do this. And of course, I said, yeah, no
- 9:06problem, I can do that. And she said to me again, no,
- 9:10Steph, you're really going to have to claim it.
- 9:13You have to step in your power. You have to go out and act the
- 9:16part. You have to think like the high
- 9:18level coach that you want to be. You have to really believe that
- 9:22you are that kind of coach. You are that kind of person.
- 9:25And what she was talking about was the embodiment of this new
- 9:29identity and it was one that I hadn't truly claimed yet, if I'm
- 9:34being honest, because I had just become certified.
- 9:38You don't know what you don't know.
- 9:39There's so much self doubt and insecurity that comes with
- 9:42taking a big leap into a new identity.
- 9:45And it makes sense, right? It just takes time to get
- 9:49familiar with what that might look like, what a new identity
- 9:52would feel like and look like. How would a high level coach
- 9:56think? How would they talk?
- 9:57How would they communicate and resolve conflict?
- 10:00What kind of ownership would they take in their life?
- 10:03These are all questions that I've been asking myself over and
- 10:05over again in the past five years as I work to shift my
- 10:09identity from being solely an acupuncturist for over a decade
- 10:13to now being coach, business owner, etcetera.
- 10:17And you know, I had inklings and ideas of what that would look
- 10:22like. But when you practice
- 10:24approaching your life circumstances through the lens
- 10:27of the identity that you want to embody, when you practice that,
- 10:31it becomes easier every single day.
- 10:34But you have to claim it. That sentence resonates in my
- 10:37mind so often because the reality is that so many people
- 10:41are on the edge of exactly where they want to go or who they want
- 10:44to be, but they haven't made the identity shift yet.
- 10:48They haven't claimed it fully in their mind.
- 10:52You know, we dabble in these new identities.
- 10:54We have moments or days when we are fully owning this new
- 10:58identity of who we want to be, but we aren't totally committed
- 11:01to it yet. And there's a lot of reasons why
- 11:04we dabble. Let's talk about them.
- 11:06What are the reasons why we dabble and we don't fully claim
- 11:08this identity shift that we want?
- 11:10First one that I can think of off the top of my head is that
- 11:14good old friend of ours, fear. Fear is huge because it can feel
- 11:19scary shifting into a new identity.
- 11:21It's stepping into the unknown and the unfamiliar, and we are
- 11:24much more comfortable with the known, which would be our old
- 11:29identity. We are neurologically wired to
- 11:32be able to perceive threats. Our brain is always scanning for
- 11:35threats. And so with a shift that is
- 11:39again, unknown, there could potentially be risk there or
- 11:42discomfort or struggle or pain, whatever.
- 11:45So as a result, we feel fear. And fear is a powerful motivator
- 11:50to stay safe, which often means staying the same.
- 11:54Safe often equals staying the same.
- 11:57And when I learned that, it made so much sense to me why I feel
- 12:01resistant to making big changes or big identity shifts because
- 12:05my brain wants to feel safety. Fear, big one.
- 12:09The second thing is we're often not paying attention.
- 12:13We simply just don't do a great job of observing our stories,
- 12:17our feelings, our thoughts, our saboteurs.
- 12:20And so we get stuck in the ruts of old stories.
- 12:26And these could be limiting beliefs.
- 12:27They could be negative or cynical thoughts.
- 12:30Oftentimes we're in the habit of behaving and thinking a certain
- 12:33way, and it will continue if we don't interrupt the pattern.
- 12:38So second one is just simply, we're not paying great
- 12:41attention. The third thing I think about in
- 12:44terms of a reason why we don't fully commit to the identity
- 12:47shift is because we haven't given ourselves permission to do
- 12:51it. Oh man, sometimes.
- 12:55Look, I'm going to be honest, sometimes I battle with myself
- 12:58about this idea of identity in the very first place because I
- 13:01think the whole concept is loaded with so many other ideas
- 13:06that aren't necessarily very helpful or that are just
- 13:09incredibly nuanced, like having to say you are a specific thing
- 13:14in this world. Having to identify with certain
- 13:18things sometimes can feel really restrictive or pigeonhole you
- 13:23because really you're just a spiritual being having a human
- 13:25experience. I mean, that's really how I
- 13:26feel. But if we set aside all of that
- 13:30for just a minute, we can't acknowledge that so many times.
- 13:33We just don't let ourselves do something different in our life.
- 13:38We don't give ourselves permission to create something
- 13:41new, to step into something new, or to identify as something
- 13:44else. And there's a lot of reasons for
- 13:46that. We have expectations of
- 13:48ourselves. We have expectations from other
- 13:50people. We have responsibilities and
- 13:52obligations. There's fear of what other
- 13:54people will think. We have old limiting beliefs.
- 13:57We have self-imposed limitations and guardrails on our life.
- 14:01All of that exists, and it's fair.
- 14:03Again, I think this goes back to creating safety.
- 14:06Our ego and our identity are very much wrapped up in this
- 14:09idea that, you know, we want to maintain safety and security in
- 14:13our life. So I can honor that.
- 14:16But I also think there's something incredibly powerful
- 14:18about giving ourselves permission to be anything that
- 14:22we want to be, especially when it comes to shifting into a new
- 14:27version of ourselves, a new identity.
- 14:31So now that we kind of have an understanding of why we dabble,
- 14:35why we don't fully commit, why we don't fully claim identity,
- 14:39why we hold back and we fear that big, big shift, let's talk
- 14:43about how can we practically follow through and actually make
- 14:47the shift? How do we start to identify at
- 14:50that next level that we aspire to be, whether it's again, a new
- 14:54role in your career or maybe living with more integrity and
- 14:58authenticity, maybe being a stronger, more impactful leader,
- 15:01or being a nurturing, calm parent or being a more present
- 15:05loving spouse. All of those things are big
- 15:07shifts, right? So how can we get there?
- 15:11How do we actually make the shift?
- 15:13There's three things that come to mind, and I think about this
- 15:16a lot. Obviously, this is not an all
- 15:18inclusive list, but the top three things that come to my
- 15:21mind in regard to this issue are to one, claim it, 2, observe the
- 15:26mind, and three, take action. So what does that mean?
- 15:30Let's break it down so #1 claim it.
- 15:33We've talked about this, but you have to fully decide that you
- 15:36are now this person and embody that identity to the best of
- 15:40your ability. So whatever it is, whatever
- 15:43identity you want to claim, whatever potential you want to
- 15:46rise up into, you have to fully decide that you are now going to
- 15:50be this person and start to embody that identity.
- 15:53And then, of course, give yourself permission to fully go
- 15:56all in, Say to yourself, I give me permission to be anyone I
- 16:01want in this life. You know, whenever I struggle
- 16:04with this idea, which is often, I think about the fact that
- 16:08there are countless stories of people who have totally uprooted
- 16:11their lives, done something wildly different.
- 16:14Maybe they've quit their jobs or they traveled the world or they
- 16:17sold everything and they moved to a different country, but they
- 16:19totally changed course. They gave themselves permission
- 16:25to throw out the script and be anyone they wanted to be.
- 16:28And that reminds me that you can do whatever you want with your
- 16:31life at the end of the day. I feel like that's really
- 16:34empowering and it's helpful for me to remember.
- 16:37And in regard to embodying the new identity, look, obviously
- 16:41you can't know everything about what that's going to look and
- 16:45feel like. You can't anticipate every
- 16:47challenge or every expectation within a role, for example.
- 16:53But I guarantee that you have an idea of where to start.
- 16:57For example, with my clients who want to move up in their
- 16:59careers, it's very easy for them to answer the question, what
- 17:03does a person in that higher role look like, Feel like, think
- 17:06like, communicate like. And they can start to write it
- 17:10out. We get a running list and we can
- 17:12begin to contrast that with where they are now.
- 17:16And it becomes very clear to them how they need to start
- 17:19moving into that new identity, even without all the
- 17:22information. So that's number one.
- 17:24Claim it #2 observe the mind. This simply means, what are your
- 17:29thoughts and feelings about this shift?
- 17:32I think it's so powerful to actually feel your feelings
- 17:35instead of just pushing them down or pushing them aside or
- 17:38compartmentalizing because you don't think they should be
- 17:41there. And what I mean is, if you have
- 17:44fear about this next level that you aspire to be at or this new
- 17:47identity, explore it. Feel it.
- 17:50Ask yourself, what am I afraid of?
- 17:53What is the fear? What is the worst case scenario?
- 17:57What if I do it anyway? And then what if I don't do it?
- 18:02What if I stay the same? Because what I've discovered
- 18:04about asking these types of questions is that my feelings
- 18:07tell me about the old stories or the unresolved happenings in my
- 18:11past that I need to sort out my resentment or my frustration.
- 18:16It's usually about anger. And my anger is usually telling
- 18:19me, hmm, I still perceive a threat here, or I fear something
- 18:23bad will happen. My sadness tells me, informs me
- 18:27I'm still resistant to what is here now.
- 18:30My shame tells me I'm afraid that I'm not worthy or I'm bad
- 18:33in someone's eyes. My guilt tells me I fear that
- 18:36I've done something bad in someone else's mind.
- 18:40My anxiety or my overwhelm is often my resistance to what is
- 18:43here now, what is currently happening.
- 18:46And it's also an attempt to control things, honestly, most
- 18:49often things that I have no control over anyway.
- 18:53So when we come at this from a different perspective and we say
- 18:55OK, my feelings and my thoughts are telling me stories about the
- 18:59world based on old frames that I've created in my past, it's so
- 19:04helpful because you aren't defined by them at that point.
- 19:09You don't have to push them away or get over them or replace
- 19:12every negative thought with a +1 for God's sakes.
- 19:15Just get curious about what they're telling you.
- 19:19Feel those feelings. And in my experience, the more
- 19:22you feel them for what they are and explore them, the more often
- 19:26there is this little moment where they start to ease up and
- 19:30you can feel a glimmer of acceptance and ultimately
- 19:34release. And that feels really nice.
- 19:36It's like freedom from some of those stuck emotions.
- 19:40So that's number two. Observe the mind.
- 19:42And then finally #3 is to take action.
- 19:45Take action as if you are that new identity.
- 19:49And so very Simply put, I would say this is about moving move
- 19:54because movement is momentum and we're always waiting for the
- 19:57confidence to come first so that we can take the action we need.
- 20:01But again, it's actually the reverse of that.
- 20:05We have to move to create and feel the confidence.
- 20:08It's not confidence first, then action, it's action, then
- 20:12confidence. You know, we always have a
- 20:14choice as to how we. Show up every day.
- 20:17We are not carved in stone. We are not our thoughts or our
- 20:21feelings. Those are just things that
- 20:23happen to us. And we can choose to do things
- 20:25differently if we want to, but it has to take place in the
- 20:28physical world. We can't just be thinking about
- 20:30it all the time that I come back to that formula that I give to
- 20:34my clients all the time. Insight plus action equals
- 20:36transformation. You can't just have insight.
- 20:39You have to combine it with action or that transformation
- 20:41doesn't happen. So those are the three big
- 20:45things that I think about when it comes to claiming your
- 20:47identity and making that shift so that you can move into this
- 20:51new space and you can kind of get to your next level.
- 20:54Above all, remember that this is all a practice.
- 20:58It's just a damn practice team. Every day you're practicing and
- 21:03growing and expanding. The work is never done.
- 21:06You'll never have it all figured out.
- 21:08And I have some clients who say, well, that's not very
- 21:10encouraging. But the other piece to practice
- 21:14is that you get better every time when you practice.
- 21:19It might not look linear to you. Some days might feel really
- 21:22challenging and hard. But we all know just by looking
- 21:25back in our lives, we can also see the evidence that the things
- 21:28that we practice get easier the more we do it.
- 21:31So it's not all hardship and discouragement.
- 21:34Not at all. I think when I view this as
- 21:38practice, it feels like freedom to try new things, freedom to
- 21:42fail, freedom to make mistakes, freedom to have a new
- 21:46opportunity every single day to embody the identity you want to
- 21:49have and to really claim it. So my challenge to you this week
- 21:54is to think about where in your life do you feel like you have
- 21:57potential to rise up into? Where in your life do you feel
- 22:00that urge to step into your next level?
- 22:03And what is the identity shift that you need to make?
- 22:07What does that person look like in the future?
- 22:10If you were to envision yourself stepping into your next level,
- 22:14whatever that looks like, whether it's with your career or
- 22:16your relationships or just your personal growth, what does that
- 22:20version of that person look like?
- 22:23How do they talk? How do they move around the
- 22:25world? How do they act and behave and
- 22:27communicate? If you can start to understand
- 22:31the characteristics of that identity, you can start to
- 22:34immediately live into it now, you can start to embody it now.
- 22:38And that's the point is to start becoming that version now so
- 22:43that the next level then just gets attracted into your life.
- 22:45You're not waiting to get there by happenstance.
- 22:49It's not random, it's not by accident.
- 22:51It will then be on purpose because you are intentionally
- 22:54embodying this new identity of who you want to be and it cannot
- 22:58help but just flow into your life.
- 23:01So that's my challenge and I'm excited for you.
- 23:03I hope that this hits. I hope it makes sense.
- 23:06Again, there's a lot of stuff nuanced with identity, but in
- 23:09this specific circumstance, in this conversation, this is about
- 23:13you having the power to become a newer, higher level of you just
- 23:19by claiming it and saying I'm deciding to step into this
- 23:22identity. So thank you for being here and
- 23:24listening. I love these conversations.
