- 0:00SPEAKER_03: Welcome to the Scarlet Orange and Brown Podcast, a weekly breakdown of the Ohio State Buckeyes, Cincinnati Bengals, and Cleveland Browns.
- 0:07SPEAKER_03: Here's your hosts, Ken Carpenter and Chris Useman.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: Hello, and welcome to the Scarlet Orange and Brown Podcast.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: I'm Ken Carpenter.
- 0:16SPEAKER_03: I'm Chris Usman.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: And we are into week eight of the show.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: And for the Buckeyes, it was a huge win for Ryan Day and his squad, but also a huge loss.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: They come away with a 1915 win over Indiana.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: Cincinnati had the bye week, and the Cleveland Browns knock off the Baltimore Ravens 13 to 10.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: How was your how's your past week?
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: Got me working three 12-hour shifts.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: There you go.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Well, let's talk Buckeyes.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: They uh the defense definitely did their job, got two turnovers, and I don't think uh they had Indiana had a turnover since last season.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: And um the way the game ended is uh pretty much just mind-boggling, but it favored the Buckeyes, so it's nice to have something like that go our way.
- 1:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it was.
- 1:42SPEAKER_03: I mean, uh it's kind of like you said, it was bittersweet.
- 1:45SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, Julie and saying, you know, from what they say, is out several weeks or indefinitely, you know, for the season with that right shoulder.
- 1:58SPEAKER_03: Uh I know we were talking a little bit before the show in the studio, Kenny, and you might have a little inside scoopage on that.
- 2:06SPEAKER_03: Do you uh what'd you hear on this?
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Well, I I have a source that says that it's uh it's the uh UCL ligament in the elbow, and that he's without a doubt done for the season, just like a lot of people are probably thinking it's going to be.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, the the the big question is going to come from that is when you have a Tommy John type injury, how quick can you come back?
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: And and if you do if you were to just go the minimum and say six months, that puts him out probably till the spring game before he can probably even pick up a football.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: So that that creates a whole new set of problems for Ryan Day and his coaching staff.
- 2:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and it pretty much guarantees that Julian's gonna be back next year just to try to improve his draft status.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: Yes, I totally agree.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: But let's talk a little bit about the Indiana game.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: The uh the the big fourth and goal uh touchdown where they threw it to Jeremiah.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: That that there is probably the one play that uh stands out to me more than any other play because I mean if they don't get that there, it's it's a totally different game.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: And you know, it's you lose joy and saying, so it becomes all hands on deck now.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: We gotta see what happens.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: But what were some things that stood out to you with the the Buckeyes this past weekend?
- 3:41SPEAKER_03: Um, well, we hung on uh to win that game literally by inches.
- 3:46SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, when Nick March stepped out uh in the end zone there.
- 3:52SPEAKER_03: I mean, yeah, we got we got lucky on that, but you know what?
- 3:56SPEAKER_03: Uh it took the whole entire game to come down to that moment.
- 3:58SPEAKER_03: So there were a lot of things that led up to that.
- 4:01SPEAKER_03: Um I thought Josh Hoover for Indiana, their quarterback, was mediocre.
- 4:06SPEAKER_03: Uh, he missed a lot of throws, Kenny.
- 4:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he missed a ton of throws.
- 4:10SPEAKER_03: I mean, I don't think he's played in that environment, just like Urban Meyer said before the game, he hasn't played in that environment before.
- 4:18SPEAKER_03: And he's gonna have to turn around and do it again when they go up and play Michigan.
- 4:21SPEAKER_03: So um pressure's on Indiana right now.
- 4:25SPEAKER_03: I you know, I kind of like that.
- 4:26SPEAKER_03: I mean, yeah, the pressure's on us being atop the bend, Big Ten right now.
- 4:31SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, but what we did find out that is that whoever our quarterback is, Luke Fehey or Tavian St.
- 4:40SPEAKER_03: Clair, um, our defense is elite when it comes to the run game, stopping the run game.
- 4:47SPEAKER_03: I mean, Indiana came into that game, Kenny, averaging 220 221 yards a game.
- 4:55SPEAKER_03: Um, and we only allowed them 73 yards.
- 4:58SPEAKER_03: They couldn't do anything running the ball.
- 5:01SPEAKER_03: So that's gonna free up us playing a you know double safety look, not giving up a huge passing play.
- 5:10SPEAKER_03: Um we needed that bye week um just to heal up before the USC game on Halloween.
- 5:21SPEAKER_03: Um plus it gives time for for Fehey and St.
- 5:25SPEAKER_03: Clair to have all kinds of first team reps uh behind center, and you know how huge that is.
- 5:33SPEAKER_03: I mean, just to get that timing down, you know, and I I thought, how does this affect Jeremiah Smith?
- 5:43SPEAKER_03: You know, and with Saiyan being hurt, and you know, I think it's gonna affect his Heisman front runner status.
- 5:52SPEAKER_03: I think um his odds drop from uh negative 215, which is dominant, which says that he was gonna win it, uh, down to negative 105.
- 6:04SPEAKER_03: So, you know, that's up in the air right now.
- 6:08SPEAKER_03: That's what Vegas has, the latest line on him winning the Heisman.
- 6:12SPEAKER_03: But I think what it's gonna happen is we're gonna have to really stay close to the line in our passes.
- 6:19SPEAKER_03: And, you know, whether or not he has time to go downfield or not is another story, but we're gonna have to utilize those closer to the line passes, you know, the the outs to uh the back out of the backfield, whether it's the tight end, um, you know, and a little five-yard out.
- 6:40SPEAKER_03: Um and not to mention the chemistry, you know, the chemistry of that team, passing game, the cadence, the huddle, you know, how he handles that stuff.
- 6:55SPEAKER_03: It's totally different for the linemen as well.
- 6:58SPEAKER_03: And then also, you know, to me, teams are gonna increase their blitzes a lot.
- 7:06SPEAKER_03: Um, they're gonna basically just pin their ears back and come after this guy.
- 7:11SPEAKER_03: So, whether it's uh Fehey or St.
- 7:15SPEAKER_03: Clair.
- 7:17SPEAKER_03: So I looked at uh you know the weather for the game coming up, extended forecast.
- 7:23SPEAKER_03: It's supposed to be 7:30 kickoff, 77 degrees, perfect football weather.
- 7:30SPEAKER_03: Um, it's gonna be a good one.
- 7:33SPEAKER_03: I mean, USC as far as their injury, you know, they also have an open week or a bye-week, also.
- 7:42SPEAKER_03: Um they're starting left tackle.
- 7:45SPEAKER_03: Elijah Page is questionable.
- 7:48SPEAKER_03: They have two defensive linemen and um Jade Aversari, he's in a uh uh walking boot.
- 7:55SPEAKER_03: He's questionable, uh, or just one rather, but they have both wide receivers, Mosley and Bowman.
- 8:02SPEAKER_03: They're questionable, and they're starting DB.
- 8:04SPEAKER_03: Trail Anderson's out for the season.
- 8:07SPEAKER_03: Uh, meanwhile, you know, you flip it over to the Ohio State side.
- 8:12SPEAKER_03: Jacoby Jackson, obviously, his foot, he's out.
- 8:16SPEAKER_03: Uh Saraveld's still out with a mystery illness.
- 8:19SPEAKER_03: Kenyatta Jackson's questionable.
- 8:21SPEAKER_03: He got carted off the field uh Saturday.
- 8:24SPEAKER_03: Jay Timmons had a hell of a game, but he re-aggravated his hamstring and had to come out.
- 8:29SPEAKER_03: And then safety, LaRoy Rooker, um, you know, he's out as well.
- 8:34SPEAKER_03: So, you know, they're both banged up.
- 8:36SPEAKER_03: They both need these bye weeks um, you know, to help.
- 8:42SPEAKER_03: But some of the positive things, Kenny, was um we ended IU's several streaks, like you said.
- 8:51SPEAKER_03: You know, their FBS uh 22-game win streak was snapped, their 19-game home win streak was snapped.
- 8:58SPEAKER_03: That was Signetti's first home loss, Kenny.
- 9:02SPEAKER_03: And they had their first home fumble lost, um, albeit the officiating two, which was absolutely horrible again.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it's it's you know, being a Buckeye fan and and watching every one of their games, you you sit and you go, how do they miss so many things?
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: And I get it that you could call holding probably just about every down, just like in the NFL.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: But there are just some blatant calls, and it wasn't just Ohio State this weekend.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: Uh Notre Dame got hosed, they lost a second at the end of their game.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: Um and the one that just blew my mind was the Florida State Miami game.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: They throw two touchdown passes to end the game and they they overturned them.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: So I I don't know what they can do about it, but man, it's he you sit in wonder.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: I mean, I I heard that Jeremiah hasn't had a pass interference call with him trying to catch a ball since his freshman year.
- 10:09SPEAKER_03: Yep, that's exactly right, Kenny.
- 10:11SPEAKER_03: And you know, some of those were just egregious.
- 10:14SPEAKER_03: I mean, the one play he got tacked, literally tackled, and the ball was five yards from him.
- 10:19SPEAKER_03: You know, and if you're not gonna call that, then what that basically says to the defensive backs is hey, it's you know, no holds barred.
- 10:28SPEAKER_03: I mean, everything, everything is legal.
- 10:30SPEAKER_03: And you know, the holding plays, I mean, the um the hit on the quarterback where it said, you know, it was uh spearing and a personal foul where he obviously led with his shoulder and then he come clean, you know.
- 10:44SPEAKER_03: Where do you want the where do you want these DBs and these defenders to hit the quarterback?
- 10:48SPEAKER_03: The knees?
- 10:50SPEAKER_03: Because that's what it's that's what it's gravitating towards.
- 10:53SPEAKER_03: You know, and then you're gonna flip throw a flag for you know roughness in the in a knee area.
- 10:57SPEAKER_03: So there is such a thin margin for error with these quarterbacks anymore.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: So you know, you think about it though, it's just I mean, you when you're trying to tackle somebody, especially a quarterback, I guess you could say, I mean, you literally have to be told from the waist to the top of the chest.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: That's about all you can aim for.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: And and that's kind of what he did, but he hit the he hit his hit him in the chest.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: But I you know, it's uh it's just like the NFL, you you blow on them and they they they call penalty nowadays.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I agree.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: The funny thing is, you know, I you know, I I get it, you want to uh take out the the the top player or whatever and and take their game away.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: But I'm telling you, Indiana did a every time they got close to Julian, they were going for a headshot.
- 11:54SPEAKER_03: Oh, without a doubt, you know, and with Hoover, I mean, he was obviously missing his throws high, then he got hurt, and you can tell he was once in pain, and then you know, he goes in the magic blue uh tent and comes out feeling great, you know.
- 12:13SPEAKER_03: And you know, for those of our listeners, uh you know, they know, but you go in that blue tent, Kenny.
- 12:18SPEAKER_03: You're you there's a there's a shot in there, a miracle shot that takes away all the pain.
- 12:23SPEAKER_03: And oh yeah, and you know, that's what happened.
- 12:25SPEAKER_03: This is why they put a blue tent on the sideline.
- 12:27SPEAKER_03: So they can give these guys a shot that numbs up their pain and then they can go out and perform because that's what it's all about.
- 12:34SPEAKER_03: It's about performance in the and in the NCAA.
- 12:37SPEAKER_03: And yeah, little does little do they know that down the road that's just gonna tear this guy's shoulder up.
- 12:44SPEAKER_03: I mean, it weakens all the ligaments and tendons, you know, in that particular area that you got affected, and it's just no good for anybody.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: Well, with the bye week coming up, you know, obviously everybody's focused on the the quarterback situation, but you know, a couple areas that just jump out to me that I think definitely need addressed if they want to make any type of run in in the playoffs is one, the running game has to step up.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: The second thing is the offensive line has got to do a better job of pass blocking because Saiyan's just getting killed this season.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: And the other thing is on the defensive side of the ball, defense is definitely you know, keeping us in every game.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: But defensive ends.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: You know, if we could just get them to spend more time in the backfield, I think we got a better chance because right now Kenyatta Jackson does a good job, but you know, you the other side of the defensive end is just there's nothing happening there.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: So I that those are the three areas of concern that I think need to be addressed in the bye week.
- 14:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, uh we have two heady linebackers um in there, um, you know, with experience.
- 14:07SPEAKER_03: So they're trying their best.
- 14:10SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, when you get a back coming on the backfield and um when you get tight ends coming across the middle, I mean, and you're supposed to stop the run.
- 14:19SPEAKER_03: I mean, that's there's a lot of onus on a linebacker for that.
- 14:22SPEAKER_03: So, you know, uh our our line, you know, as long as they're stopping the run and holding these big-time programs to under 100 yards, usually under 70 yards, I'm happy with that.
- 14:37SPEAKER_03: Uh, with our secondary being the way it is, but I'm just, you know, I'm I'm concerned that Timmins is re-aggravating this hamstring all the time.
- 14:46SPEAKER_03: I think this bye week is going to give him a chance to heal up.
- 14:49SPEAKER_03: Hopefully, Kenyatta Jackson's gonna be okay.
- 14:53SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, you mentioned the offensive line.
- 14:56SPEAKER_03: We need to get Serveld, you know, whatever that illness is.
- 14:59SPEAKER_03: I don't know whether it's mono or what, but we need to get him up and going.
- 15:03SPEAKER_03: I liked, I liked Isaiah West coming in.
- 15:07SPEAKER_03: Uh, he ran hard.
- 15:08SPEAKER_03: He ran angry and he ran hard, and I thought he did a great job.
- 15:11SPEAKER_03: I thought we ran the ball really well against IU.
- 15:16SPEAKER_03: I thought we did.
- 15:16SPEAKER_03: It took a lot of pressure off Julian.
- 15:19SPEAKER_03: And as you said, I mean, these games coming up now, Kenny, with our quarterback being depleted, you know, the run game is going to be huge.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: Now, where are you standing on?
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: You know, the the coaches obviously know who's performing the best as the backup quarterback.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: Now one of them has to be the starting quarterback, and I've and right now it's Luke Fehey, 5'11, 205, and Tavian St.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: Clair is 6'4-235.
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: And I don't know if you got a chance to listen to Herb Street talk with uh Joey Galloway uh on their podcast, but uh Herbstreet says that there are more five-star misses at quarterback because these guys will show up and they're in shorts and you know t-shirts and they're 6'5, 230, and they just look the part and they can throw the ball a mile.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: But when it comes to actually playing quarterback and processing and making the right reads and getting the ball out on time, that is the big issue.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: And you know, Tavian St.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: Clair played for Belfon here in Ohio, which is a probably like a division two, maybe three uh league that they're playing in.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: Luke Fehey played in probably the toughest high school football football conference in the country.
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: So I I I think Faye's the answer, and but but you've got to give St.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: Clair an opportunity if if it doesn't work.
- 17:01SPEAKER_03: Well, I remember years and years ago, and uh, you know, I can't remember the quarterbacks that it happened with, but you know, we deployed a a two-quarterback system when we needed to there it was, Joe Germain.
- 17:16SPEAKER_03: You talk about a golden arm, Kenny.
- 17:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:19SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, and Stanley Jackson was just like, you give me two guys in the open field, and both of them are gonna miss.
- 17:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:27SPEAKER_03: You know, and when it comes to tackling this kid, so you know, there could be a two-quarterback system.
- 17:32SPEAKER_03: You know, I mean, you ever try to tackle a guy at 6'4, 250?
- 17:36SPEAKER_03: I mean, that's not fun.
- 17:38SPEAKER_03: You know, so you just grab a leg and hold on, hope the linebackers get there, you know, or hope a defensive line makes his or get lineman makes his way over and gets there.
- 17:47SPEAKER_03: So I think they can utilize that.
- 17:49SPEAKER_03: That's probably what they're working on this week is you know, utilizing both quarterbacks in a different set um just to try to get uh some sort of um you know play calls for them.
- 18:00SPEAKER_03: Uh I know Arthur Smith has his hands full coming up, you know, these next couple weeks.
- 18:06SPEAKER_03: Um he'll have his hands full of the rest of the season, to be honest with you, if you're if your prognosis comes true, Kenny, with him being out for the uh year.
- 18:14SPEAKER_03: So um, you know, it's just gonna be one of those things where you know I think I think you're dead on when you go to that California league out there where you got De La Salle and Matter Day and you know, all these teams that I mean that there's Division I guys, you're playing against future Division I guys all over the place at every position, just about.
- 18:35SPEAKER_03: So, yeah, that's probably the reason why uh he's probably got a leg up and on all that stuff, too, as well.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: Well, you know, they they they go to USC and it's on me almost like a homecoming for him.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: He gets a chance to start in front of a lot of friends and family, but uh you know, they got a they got a you know a few weeks to kind of get ready for it, so it'll be fun to figure out what uh Ryan Day and his staff does.
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: Let's uh make the jump now.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: Cincinnati Bengals.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: They had a bye week.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: Um and you know, the big talk now is what the Browns was looking at last week is Lamar Jackson going to be able to play.
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: I would think he's going to play this week.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: Give us your preview of of the game with the Ravens.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: And do you think Lamar will be at quarterback for the Ravens?
- 19:31SPEAKER_03: No, it's a tough call.
- 19:32SPEAKER_03: I mean, yeah, he still hasn't practiced all week.
- 19:35SPEAKER_03: And um, you know, when you're dealing with an ankle, and we know from the past that Lamar will not play until he feels like he's totally healthy.
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: I mean, do you remember, you know, a couple years ago, I mean, he would not go in the game, you know, until he felt like he was 100% ready to go.
- 19:55SPEAKER_03: Uh, he just doesn't play that way.
- 19:57SPEAKER_03: I mean, you know, I mean, the days of um Steve Young, you know, Joe Montana, you know, all Kenny Anderson, all those guys that just, you know, they could barely walk after the season's over.
- 20:12SPEAKER_03: Um, they're just no more.
- 20:13SPEAKER_03: I mean, these guys, we're talking hundreds of millions of dollars on the line here.
- 20:18SPEAKER_03: Um, the AFC North, Kenny is just um, you look at Cleveland, Baltimore, Pittsburgh all four and two.
- 20:25SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, Cincinnati, Lowley, Cincinnati's uh, you know, limping in with a three and two record.
- 20:31SPEAKER_03: You know, that AFC North, Kenny, it's just like the SEC.
- 20:34SPEAKER_03: It eats themselves.
- 20:37SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 20:37SPEAKER_03: I mean, you know, we all beat each other up, you know, during the season.
- 20:43SPEAKER_03: And then, you know, it and another thing too, Kenny, is if you notice all all winners in the AFC when it comes to our division wins, they're at home.
- 20:51SPEAKER_03: You know, Cleveland's beat Pittsburgh and Baltimore at home.
- 20:56SPEAKER_03: And um Pittsburgh beat Cincinnati at home.
- 21:01SPEAKER_03: Um, that's you know, that's saying something right there.
- 21:04SPEAKER_03: I mean, home field advantage is huge.
- 21:07SPEAKER_03: Um, I do like Cincinnati's chances the next six win in at least four of those six games.
- 21:13SPEAKER_03: Um that'd put us at you know seven and four, and that'd be looking pretty good for the playoffs with our remaining stretch.
- 21:21SPEAKER_03: Um I keep going back to this.
- 21:24SPEAKER_03: I say it every week on the uh SOB.
- 21:27SPEAKER_03: Nobody would bat an eye, Kenny, if we were five and oh.
- 21:31SPEAKER_03: We are literally, and I saw this on two other sites this week, we are literally two plays away from being five and oh.
- 21:38SPEAKER_03: So um, you know, we're right there.
- 21:42SPEAKER_03: I mean, injury news, uh yeah, Swayze Bozeman, you know, he's not an everyday linebacker for us, but he does come in on certain packages.
- 21:51SPEAKER_03: He's mainly a special teams guy.
- 21:53SPEAKER_03: He broke his forearm.
- 21:55SPEAKER_03: Uh, we had we do have tight end concerns with Tanner Hudson with his pack being out, but That gives a guy like Jack Hendries.
- 22:02SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, Buckeye fans should know him.
- 22:04SPEAKER_03: He was a tech uh tight end for Texas.
- 22:06SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, that kid's good.
- 22:08SPEAKER_03: Uh gives him a chance.
- 22:11SPEAKER_03: Um, to me, it's gonna come down to the run D test versus Derrick Henry.
- 22:17SPEAKER_03: Derrick Henry always has a career game against us for some reason.
- 22:20SPEAKER_03: Um, but I think this year it's a little different, Kenny.
- 22:23SPEAKER_03: I mean, you know, we got sexy Dexie in there, you got Jonathan Allen, now you got a healthy BJ Hill, um, you know, all those other big guys in there.
- 22:32SPEAKER_03: And I think it's gonna be a little bit different, not to mention the fact that we got two quick, capable defensive ends um in there as well.
- 22:40SPEAKER_03: Um, one thing I'd like about the Bengals is we are number one in the NFL um on third and one and fourth and one.
- 22:48SPEAKER_03: So we are X uh we are executing those plays.
- 22:52SPEAKER_03: We're getting it done.
- 22:53SPEAKER_03: We are the number one team in the NFL at that.
- 22:55SPEAKER_03: And also Burrow leads the NFL in intermediate passing.
- 23:00SPEAKER_03: So we're getting these little short uh throws, and and it's uh that's what I like this year about the Bengals is we don't have to complete a 17-yard pass play to Chase or T every time.
- 23:11SPEAKER_03: You know, we can go and hit that five-yard uh pass play to Sam J on third down back, or you know, Chase Brown coming out of the backfield, or you know, one of the tight ends looking around.
- 23:22SPEAKER_03: So um that I like.
- 23:24SPEAKER_03: Uh the Ravens are uh minus three at home.
- 23:29SPEAKER_03: Uh the over and under on this game, Kenny's 51 and a half.
- 23:33SPEAKER_03: Um will Lamar return with his ankle?
- 23:37SPEAKER_03: That's the key.
- 23:38SPEAKER_03: Uh I'm told that if Huntley does start, that should that line will shift down to a pick'em.
- 23:46SPEAKER_03: So how does how are the Ravens favored?
- 23:51SPEAKER_03: Um I just think it's a home game in the N AFC.
- 23:54SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's you know, it's one Cincinnati always plays Baltimore tough at Baltimore.
- 24:00SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, it's one of those games where hey, it's gonna be sunny in 63, perfect football weather, it's gonna be a big kick.
- 24:08SPEAKER_03: They have a great, you know, they have a good kicker too.
- 24:10SPEAKER_03: Uh we have a great kicker.
- 24:13SPEAKER_03: Um, it's gonna be whoever scores in the red zone.
- 24:17SPEAKER_03: You know, we've had our problems with the red zone.
- 24:19SPEAKER_03: I think we're starting to figure it out.
- 24:21SPEAKER_03: Um and to me, if I'm starting and I'm Lamar Jackson, then I'm worried about my ankle.
- 24:32SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 24:33SPEAKER_03: I'm not gonna be hanging out in the in the pocket too long.
- 24:36SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna be getting out of that pocket.
- 24:38SPEAKER_03: I'm not gonna take a sack.
- 24:40SPEAKER_03: Um, I'm not gonna try to run, you know, healthy Lamar Jackson scares the death out of me.
- 24:45SPEAKER_03: Should scare the death out of any team.
- 24:47SPEAKER_03: But um, I just don't think he's healthy right now, Kenny.
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: Well, let me ask you this we're getting to that point in the season where some teams are gonna have to start making decisions about what they're playing for.
- 25:06SPEAKER_00: And I've heard a couple trade rumors involving the Cincinnati Bengals, and the two teams that it involves is the Philadelphia Eagles and also the uh Indianapolis Colts.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: And the talk is the two running backs, Saquon Barkley and Jonathan Taylor.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: You add those two guys to your team, holy hell.
- 25:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, it'd be nice to have.
- 25:34SPEAKER_03: I mean, those are backs that you know uh that can make you miss.
- 25:39SPEAKER_03: And, you know, in my opinion, Saquon or Jonathan Taylor, I mean, they're gonna get you four or five yards at least every carry.
- 25:48SPEAKER_03: You know, Chase Brown, you know, runs hard, but he doesn't have that cutback ability.
- 25:53SPEAKER_03: He doesn't have that, you know, that that experience level where he says no and bounces it out.
- 25:59SPEAKER_03: You know, he's always picking that that hole that you know is always clogged up by two or three guys.
- 26:06SPEAKER_03: And I'm not he doesn't, it's not like he doesn't run hard, Kenny.
- 26:09SPEAKER_03: I mean, this kid runs hard, but he's just gotta learn to make that cutback run when he does that.
- 26:16SPEAKER_00: But I would think that you if you were to be able to add one of those two backs, that's gotta put you over the top for winning division and and advancing deep into the uh playoffs, I would think.
- 26:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I like um Sam JP Ryan.
- 26:34SPEAKER_03: I mean, this kid, I mean, he does it all.
- 26:36SPEAKER_03: He does it on special teams, he does it on third down, he's just a a rough run, he doesn't fumble, he's just a uh a rugged back.
- 26:43SPEAKER_03: I mean, I think he was the NCAA leading running back ever in touchdowns.
- 26:49SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, he's just one of those forgotten guys that does a lot of work on third down for everybody.
- 26:54SPEAKER_03: And um, you know, if we had a a back that complements him, you know, with the running that that can get us 75 uh to 100 yards a game, then you're right.
- 27:05SPEAKER_03: That takes a lot of pressure off Joe Burrow, takes a lot of pressure off these receivers, and not only that, it opens them up a little bit better.
- 27:11SPEAKER_00: Who do you think wins this one?
- 27:14SPEAKER_03: Well, um, you know, the Ravens are banged up.
- 27:17SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, they got a lot of guys, albeit Jackson, but Jurgens, their center, has a concussion.
- 27:22SPEAKER_03: That's huge when your starting center goes down.
- 27:25SPEAKER_03: Voorhees and Jones, a couple offensive linemen are banged up.
- 27:28SPEAKER_03: Uh, one of their defensive, big defensive linemen, Washington.
- 27:32SPEAKER_03: He's got an ankle injury.
- 27:33SPEAKER_03: You know how those guys are.
- 27:35SPEAKER_03: They say they're okay, and then they start, and then uh two series later, you see them limp them off to the side of the field.
- 27:41SPEAKER_03: So um it's gonna be a matter of you know, turnovers, obviously, and it's gonna be a matter of um, you know, the kicking game.
- 27:50SPEAKER_03: So I I like Cincinnati in this game and a close one 27-24.
- 27:56SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, I just think right now Cincinnati has a lot going for them, and I think Baltimore, with their first year head coach, you know, hasn't been in a lot of these situations really, especially the AFC North.
- 28:09SPEAKER_00: Yes, I I agree with you.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: I think Cincinnati wins in a close one.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: Uh might be a little bit more scorned, I think, but I I got them winning 20 27-24.
- 28:23SPEAKER_03: Okay, that's what I got.
- 28:24SPEAKER_03: Good, good.
- 28:24SPEAKER_03: Let's hope that.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: I think I should pay better attention.
- 28:27SPEAKER_03: No, you're good.
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: Well, moving on to the uh I'm still stunned every time I say this.
- 28:35SPEAKER_00: First place, Cleveland Browns.
- 28:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 28:37SPEAKER_00: Uh sitting at 4-2, 2-0 division.
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: And like you said earlier, they're they're doing the job at home.
- 28:43SPEAKER_00: They're 3-0 at home.
- 28:45SPEAKER_00: Uh, it wasn't pretty, but they beat the Baltimore Ravens 13-10 on a 37-yard field goal from Andre Smith, and um they found a way.
- 29:00SPEAKER_03: They did, Kenny.
- 29:02SPEAKER_03: You know, but if you notice, Smith missed a field goal earlier.
- 29:05SPEAKER_03: Uh that you know, they would have had that game, you know, in hand.
- 29:08SPEAKER_03: And um, I just think that consistency in their special teams needs to improve.
- 29:13SPEAKER_03: What I do like is Deshaun's fourth quarter, he looked like the veteran presence that they draft that they did this move for.
- 29:24SPEAKER_03: Uh, the defense is elite.
- 29:26SPEAKER_03: Schwechinger, who was hurt, had 14 tackles, Kenny.
- 29:31SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, he had a big forced hit on Henry that you know, that fumble in the fourth quarter.
- 29:36SPEAKER_03: Um, but they need to do a better job in the first half of these games, Kenny.
- 29:41SPEAKER_03: The first half issues, I mean, they only had 46 yards in the first half.
- 29:46SPEAKER_03: So, you know, uh another thing it's gonna come down to with uh Judkins being out is you know, Jaleel McLaughlin and Audrick um what is it, Estima?
- 30:00SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 30:01SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, they they combined for 70 yards.
- 30:04SPEAKER_03: That's fine.
- 30:05SPEAKER_03: You know, that'll be good.
- 30:06SPEAKER_03: Uh and you know, Jerry Judy had an appearance, finally delivered you know, after a bunch of trade rumors.
- 30:12SPEAKER_03: Uh, you had four receptions for 69 yards, zero drops this time.
- 30:18SPEAKER_03: Um yeah, there is some issues there with you know injuries.
- 30:23SPEAKER_03: I mean, Delpitt, you know, their all-star safety is questionable with an ankle, and Graham Hall, you know, the defensive tackles are still questionable.
- 30:32SPEAKER_03: Jenkins, Tavon Jenkins, the guard, he's still out.
- 30:36SPEAKER_03: So you got those issues that you're nursing through as well.
- 30:40SPEAKER_00: Well, you know, the you know, I watched the game and Schmidt got the kiss of death as soon as the announcer said he's made 25 in a row.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: And then he he just misses, you know, he just you know, two feet the other way, it it's good.
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: But yeah, um, I like when he runs out on the field.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: I you know, you it uh gives you a lot of confidence when you can sit there instead of like when you watch a buckeye game, you're like, all right, you know, we got a pretty good chance to make this uh field goal.
- 31:14SPEAKER_00: So um you know, I think it's the fourth time in five games that Watson's had a game-winning drive.
- 31:21SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, I I didn't anticipate this coming into the season, but um you know, a ton of credit's got to go to Todd Munkin.
- 31:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, I think Munkin's, you know, he's doing his homework.
- 31:36SPEAKER_03: I mean, he's doing a great job.
- 31:37SPEAKER_03: He's he's a good coach.
- 31:38SPEAKER_03: I mean, you know, I I honestly to me, Kenny, the you know, they're playing the Titans.
- 31:44SPEAKER_03: Um, they had a big win.
- 31:46SPEAKER_03: Uh, but they got to stop Tony Pollard, their all-star back.
- 31:50SPEAKER_03: Um, they got to beat up their offensive line, which is suspect.
- 31:54SPEAKER_03: Uh Cam Ward struggled uh at quarterback uh for the Titans.
- 31:59SPEAKER_03: Verson Collins, they have to pressure him uh throughout the game.
- 32:04SPEAKER_03: Uh they need to neutralize the defensive tackle, Jeffrey Simmons.
- 32:08SPEAKER_03: He's a force in the middle.
- 32:09SPEAKER_03: He could give Deshaun problems all day long.
- 32:13SPEAKER_03: And they need to have a slow and steady offense.
- 32:17SPEAKER_03: One that's just methodically goes down the field with dink, dunk, dunk, dunk, you know, running the ball.
- 32:24SPEAKER_03: And then they can look downfield to Boston, you know, or Jerry Judy.
- 32:28SPEAKER_03: And they also need to limit those self-inflicted wounds that Cleveland's famous for.
- 32:32SPEAKER_03: If they do all those things, Kenny, I see them coming away with a 20-10 victory here.
- 32:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they're favored by a point and a half.
- 32:39SPEAKER_00: Um, I think Cleveland should be able to get the win.
- 32:44SPEAKER_00: And Cleveland isn't known for their scoring, so you know, I can see them winning, I'm gonna say 21-17 this week.
- 32:53SPEAKER_00: Okay, and um, you know, hopefully they can uh just deep winning, which uh, you know, it's it the the town needs it, especially after the guardians came up short in the um ALCS, I guess.
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: And uh, so it's uh it's gonna be fun to watch how this shakes out.
- 33:15SPEAKER_00: Who do you have for your upsets and who do you have for your locks this week?
- 33:19SPEAKER_03: Well, I just want you to know, you know, I went five and one again last week, Kenny.
- 33:23SPEAKER_03: Um I called Kentucky over Oklahoma.
- 33:27SPEAKER_03: Uh I did take Missouri over old miss with a points, and that was that was bad.
- 33:32SPEAKER_03: Uh, but I got Florida over Texas, Carolina over Philadelphia, Tampa Bay over Pittsburgh with the points, Tennessee with a points over the Colts.
- 33:41SPEAKER_03: Nailed off nail all of those.
- 33:43SPEAKER_03: This week I've got three that I like.
- 33:46SPEAKER_03: Um, I like Florida plus 12 and a half at Georgia.
- 33:50SPEAKER_03: Georgia just seems to let teams hang around and the game's closer than it is.
- 33:56SPEAKER_03: I like the Dolphins plus four and a half at the New York Jets.
- 34:00SPEAKER_03: And uh my lock is the Patriots plus three at Chicago.
- 34:05SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: Well, I my upsets this week.
- 34:09SPEAKER_00: Old Miss going down to Texas and they're getting three and a half.
- 34:13SPEAKER_00: I just think that uh Texas has got too much controversy going on, and this might be a game where Arch Manning could get benched, and that ought to be interesting to see.
- 34:26SPEAKER_00: The other one is Miami, they yes, they're undefeated, but they struggled with Florida State and they play Pitt.
- 34:37SPEAKER_00: They're at home and they're giving Pitt 19 and a half.
- 34:41SPEAKER_00: I would take Pitt in that one.
- 34:43SPEAKER_00: Uh my locks BYU minus six and a half at UCF, coming off a big win.
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: Uh hopefully they can continue that uh their winning ways.
- 34:55SPEAKER_00: And then the other one, I just think that Signetti is just uh too good of a coach to not lose two in a row.
- 35:04SPEAKER_00: They're going to Michigan and they're giving them seven points, and it might be a game where Bryce Underwood is sitting on the bench.
- 35:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, uh Carr came in uh second half of that game and kind of uh gave them the spark that they needed.
- 35:20SPEAKER_03: So I imagine practice is a little tense this week, you know, up there at um the team up north.
- 35:27SPEAKER_03: Uh I do I'm leery.
- 35:29SPEAKER_03: I was gonna pick BYU in my other pool this weekend, and I did some uh you know some research on that game.
- 35:38SPEAKER_03: I you know, they got to fly across the country, Kenny, after that big win against Notre Dame.
- 35:44SPEAKER_03: That game might be closer than you think.
- 35:46SPEAKER_03: I I really do.
- 35:47SPEAKER_03: I mean, I you know, I like BYU.
- 35:50SPEAKER_03: And by the way, who do you have in your top five this week?
- 35:52SPEAKER_00: Oh, yes, forgot all about that.
- 35:54SPEAKER_00: I wow.
- 35:58SPEAKER_00: I I want to say just because we're undefeated, I'm gonna go ahead and give it to Miami.
- 36:05SPEAKER_00: Ohio State should be number two.
- 36:08SPEAKER_00: And three through five.
- 36:11SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 36:12SPEAKER_00: Uh that's a toss up there.
- 36:15SPEAKER_00: I I wanna I want to put Notre Dame in there, but some of the numbers I've seen from them and and Marcus Freeman's record, they're not as good as people think they are.
- 36:28SPEAKER_00: So I'm gonna I'm gonna keep uh Georgia and three, Indiana four, and let's go with uh wow.
- 36:44SPEAKER_00: That's a it's a pick I'm I'm not sure who you put it, but okay.
- 36:47SPEAKER_00: Maybe throw Texas Tech in there.
- 36:49SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 36:50SPEAKER_03: Well, I mean, last week, you know, you asked who the two surprise teams were, and I said BYU and Tech.
- 36:58SPEAKER_03: And um, you know, I I also think you gotta throw Miami in there.
- 37:03SPEAKER_03: I mean, as bad as they looked against Florida State, and albeit should have lost.
- 37:07SPEAKER_03: Um OSU at two, they deserve it after the schedule they played, whether the quarterback's healthy or not.
- 37:14SPEAKER_03: Uh BYU, I got at three.
- 37:17SPEAKER_03: Uh Texas Tech, I got at four, and five, I got Georgia.
- 37:21SPEAKER_03: So I was just disappointed.
- 37:25SPEAKER_03: Okay, go ahead.
- 37:26SPEAKER_00: I forgot all about BYU.
- 37:28SPEAKER_00: I got uh I would put BYU three, Georgia four, and uh uh Indiana five and move Texas Tech out of there.
- 37:37SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 37:38SPEAKER_03: You know, I was just thoroughly disgusted, really, looking at the AP poll.
- 37:42SPEAKER_03: I mean, I there's no rhyme or reason to this thing.
- 37:45SPEAKER_03: It really isn't.
- 37:46SPEAKER_03: I mean, Ohio State got beat at Texas, it was one versus two, you know, in a night game, and we got beat by we handled them, you know, the three quarters.
- 37:54SPEAKER_03: It wasn't even a game, and then all of a sudden they came back and got beat by one, and we dropped clear down to sixth or seventh.
- 38:00SPEAKER_03: I forget what that was.
- 38:02SPEAKER_03: You know, it was just it doesn't make any sense, you know, and a couple of these teams, you know, I get it that Alabama lost, Notre Dame lost, you know, Georgia lost, you know, all these things happened, but there's there's got to be a little bit better consistency.
- 38:19SPEAKER_03: You can't just lose a game.
- 38:20SPEAKER_03: You know, a couple of these teams got beat by unranked teams.
- 38:23SPEAKER_03: You know, Georgia should have got beat by a three-and-three Florida state team.
- 38:27SPEAKER_03: Um, so yeah, I you know, or Miami.
- 38:31SPEAKER_03: So um, yeah, it's just you know, it's just the inconsistency on the AP polls and all the stuff going on.
- 38:37SPEAKER_03: I just I don't even know if they know what they're doing.
- 38:40SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 38:41SPEAKER_00: And you know, the one thing that's that that I heard this week is everybody's questioning Faye for the Buckeyes being the quarterback, and he kind of got thrown in there what and and he didn't do well for the few plays that he was in.
- 38:59SPEAKER_00: But you know, with the two weeks of preparing, I think he'll be okay.
- 39:03SPEAKER_00: And the one thing that that makes me like him even more was Kurt Signetti was doing everything he could to get him to come to Indiana.
- 39:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, hey, we saw him uh, you know, at the tail end of some of these games uh that were blowouts earlier in the year.
- 39:21SPEAKER_03: And I mean, Tavian had two interceptions, ugly interceptions.
- 39:25SPEAKER_03: And Feyhe was just coming out here and he was picking them apart and he was throwing the ball well.
- 39:30SPEAKER_03: And you know, of course, his receivers uh for second teamers were you know people like Chris Henry Jr., Brock Boyd, you know, all those guys, and um he was doing fine.
- 39:43SPEAKER_03: I mean, you know, there was really no let off there.
- 39:46SPEAKER_03: I mean, we stepped on the gas and went down the field.
- 39:48SPEAKER_03: So if he can just get, hey, you're a backup quarterback, not knowing if you're gonna play, and then all of a sudden you're vaulted into uh Ohio State at Indiana game, you're facing the reigning national champions, number five, top five team in the nation, you know, on a hostile turf.
- 40:05SPEAKER_03: I mean, I don't know how I would react either, you know.
- 40:09SPEAKER_03: So I think we need to give him uh give him the benefit of the doubt here and with a couple weeks preparation, see what he can really do.
- 40:16SPEAKER_03: He's going back home.
- 40:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, definitely.
- 40:19SPEAKER_00: Well, to finish up, do you have any good stories?
- 40:24SPEAKER_03: Well, I kind of I I debated on this, Kenny, and I kind of I wanted to go my Bigfoot route, but I'm I'm gonna ask you how you feel after the tribe got beat.
- 40:38SPEAKER_00: Well, I just think that they they they got away from with what they did to got them there for the the pitching.
- 40:50SPEAKER_00: And you know, I you just you know I I get you gotta win, but when you're bringing in Cade Smith with a four-run lead and he's your closer, and you know, these guys they start seeing guys consistently enough that Major League hitters are going to figure out a way.
- 41:09SPEAKER_00: Um and you know, they gotta give them credit.
- 41:13SPEAKER_00: They you know they're not the best hitting team, but they they they advanced again, and you know, I I just keep sitting there wondering, um, am I gonna get a chance to see them win a World Series?
- 41:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I don't know.
- 41:29SPEAKER_00: Jose's not getting any younger.
- 41:32SPEAKER_00: And you know, the the thing I think about was I talked to an old army buddy of mine, and his uh grandfather was the biggest Red Sox fan he could ever imagine.
- 41:42SPEAKER_00: And he said that uh he he never got to see him win a World Series.
- 41:48SPEAKER_00: And when they he passed away when he was in his casket, everything he had on was Red Sox.
- 41:56SPEAKER_00: And sure enough, the next year the Red Sox win the World Series.
- 41:59SPEAKER_03: Ah, bless his heart.
- 42:01SPEAKER_00: And and one of his friends told him he goes, you know, it wasn't at Babe Ruth curse, it was actually it was your grandfather, and we needed him to die so they could get the win, win the World Series.
- 42:11SPEAKER_03: Well, let me ask you this.
- 42:12SPEAKER_03: I mean, how do you feel about a couple you know mid mid-market teams with Milwaukee and Tampa Bay being in the World Series here?
- 42:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, I I'm rooting for Milwaukee.
- 42:23SPEAKER_00: Um, not a big fan of how Camonero and those those guys were acting, but uh, you know, I get you know, you the old school in me says, you know, act like you hit a home run for before and and not uh you know jump around and do and stand there like you did during the regular season, he would have probably got hit the next time around.
- 42:47SPEAKER_00: Um you know, and then if you want to go the conspiracy theory route, they're talking about a lockout and that like the Dodgers and the Yankees, and the big talking point is going to be having some type of salary cap so teams like the NFL like in the NFL can be equal, and they're gonna say the Dodgers are gonna have a point saying, look, two small market teams made it to the World Series.
- 43:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Milwaukee Brewers swept us.
- 43:21SPEAKER_00: So I don't know, you know, but I'm glad to see two teams get in there that haven't won a World Series.
- 43:28SPEAKER_03: Well, do you think that that lends a little hope to teams like Pittsburgh and Cincinnati and you know, some of those other teams that really don't get, you know, the White Sox, um, you know, those teams that really don't get a lot of um publicity out there during the season.
- 43:45SPEAKER_03: And they can't keep their top guys.
- 43:47SPEAKER_03: Like, you know, Cincinnati's even debating about trading Ellie right now because um they know they're not gonna be able to meet his demands, you know, um when they get when they get him.
- 43:57SPEAKER_03: And they're just like, let's get all the prospects out of them, you know, or you know, that that we can right now.
- 44:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, almost maybe they ought to do the whole money ball thing with him.
- 44:07SPEAKER_00: You know, I mean, go out and get those those guys, make a trade and go out and get guys that can help you right away and and uh you know, a couple guys that can you know help you down the road because that's the one thing Cleveland does is I mean, if you look Bowers won the NL MVP for the the L NLCS, and then you had uh Yandi Diaz won it for the Tampa Bay Rays, and Camanero.
- 44:41SPEAKER_00: They were all former Cleveland guardians, yeah.
- 44:45SPEAKER_00: So you know, I mean I think you gotta you gotta do that, and you got a chance.
- 44:51SPEAKER_00: I mean, look what uh the Cleveland did when they they got rid of um the shortstop that went to the Mets, they picked up some guys that helped them.
- 45:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Linda.
- 45:02SPEAKER_00: I mean, you gotta go out and make the whole team better.
- 45:06SPEAKER_00: And you know, I mean it's great when you have one guy, but if you don't have enough guys around him, it's yeah, there's no reason Cincinnati and some of these other teams can't do the same thing.
- 45:15SPEAKER_03: I agree.
- 45:16SPEAKER_03: I agree.
- 45:19SPEAKER_00: Well, I guess that's a wrap on week eight.
- 45:24SPEAKER_00: And um, it'll be fun to see that uh well, we got two teams playing this week.
- 45:30SPEAKER_00: The the Buckeyes sit out, so it's uh NFL weekend, and if you have something to do on Saturday, you gotta cut your grass.
- 45:37SPEAKER_00: This is the uh the week to do it, I guess.
- 45:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
- 45:41SPEAKER_00: Maybe go to a wedding.
- 45:42SPEAKER_00: I'm sure there's gonna be a ton of weddings in Columbus.
