Transcript
- 0:00Thank you so much for the three of you for being here today.
- 0:02How are we all doing?
- 0:03Good?
- 0:03good, so good, so happy to be here.
- 0:06We are so excited for Seussical, the musical, to arrive.
- 0:09uh Kylie, how has the rehearsal process been going so far?
- 0:14It has been pretty fun, like seeing everyone's character kind of come out as time has gone over.
- 0:23I know I've done this show before, I think everyone else has done this show before.
- 0:28um But still seeing like the new side of the characters come out is really fun to see the journey.
- 0:36Are you playing the same character as you did previously?
- 0:38Okay.
- 0:41Lauren you've also been a part of the show before.
- 0:43Yes, yes, I've played Gertrude McFuzz in a past production.
- 0:46And Andrea, how about you?
- 0:48Yep, I've done it a couple times.
- 0:50I was a bird girl once.
- 0:51I was Miss Mayor once.
- 0:53Yes!
- 0:55So you've done it quite a few times.
- 0:58Well, I'll I love the show.
- 1:00So for all three of you, I'll start with you, Andrea, is just kind of what drew you back to the show?
- 1:03What made you decide that I have to do Seussical the musical again?
- 1:08It's just so much fun, you know?
- 1:10And I just love the characters.
- 1:11And each time you do it, it's just a different experience of who you get to be and what that's like.
- 1:17And it's just the best.
- 1:19Lauren, how about for you?
- 1:20What drew you back to this, the show?
- 1:22Seussical even though in the theater community, it's one of those shows that everyone likes to make fun of.
- 1:28um I personally have loved Seussical forever.
- 1:31I think it's so heartwarming.
- 1:33um It's so perfect for the whole family to come see.
- 1:37Perfect for all ages.
- 1:39There's comedy in there for uh younger children and all the way up to adults.
- 1:44ah It's just one of those shows that leaves you smiling at the end.
- 1:48Kylie, what drew you back to it?
- 1:49I love the characters.
- 1:52I love Horton, Hears a Who.
- 1:55And I feel like that's one of the biggest storylines.
- 2:00And so I will always.
- 2:02Seussical ?
- 2:02I'm there.
- 2:03Anytime.
- 2:04Anytime, anywhere.
- 2:05I'm there.
- 2:06So it's funny because I actually hung out with Kylie the day that this show was announced and she was going insane at how excited she was for Seussical.
- 2:15uh But Lauren, you mentioned that this is kind of like, for lack of better term, it's kind like a laughing stock of the theater scene, but also it's coming back to Broadway
- 2:28apparently.
- 2:28So like, clearly there's something that's drawing people to this.
- 2:31I've heard people say what they say but this show how can you not love it?
- 2:37Absolutely.
- 2:38I mean, I think that like, Andrea you said, too, this is kind of the family friendly show.
- 2:41This is something that like the whole family can get involved with outside or inside, um you know, acting or as the audience.
- 2:48And so that has to be really um appealing to families.
- 2:52Yeah, all ages, right?
- 2:53Like you can appreciate if you're young and you're super into Dr.
- 2:56Seuss books, you can appreciate if you're older and you've read them to a million children before.
- 3:01The show is so great.
- 3:02The characters have so much heart.
- 3:04The songs are so darn catchy and they stick in your head and stay there forever.
- 3:10So we'll be singing these forever.
- 3:11That's what you're saying.
- 3:13Basically, yes.
- 3:14You're gonna have one in your head for sure when you leave.
- 3:18Perfect, I love that.
- 3:19uh So Lauren, kind of what is the story of Seussical the musical?
- 3:23There's so many stories.
- 3:26I think the main premise follows Horton the Elephant, who somehow hears some voices coming from a speck of dust that end up on a clover.
- 3:37And Horton the Elephant, unfortunately, no one believes him that.
- 3:41Those people are there except for trusty old Gertrude McFuzz.
- 3:45um Meanwhile, the Jungle of Nool characters are all kind of against Horton, kind of making fun of him, treating him as if he doesn't know what he's talking about.
- 3:59Meanwhile, the Whos are fighting for their life, trying to survive, begging Horton for help.
- 4:06All the while, we have our character Jojo.
- 4:08who comes from the Who world alongside Cat in the Hat.
- 4:12And we see their adventures take place as well throughout the story.
- 4:16Kylie, what I love about this story so much is that it does weave every single narrative of Dr.
- 4:22Seuss into one show.
- 4:24Yeah, literally everything.
- 4:25Hahaha
- 4:27And so who are you playing in the show, Kylie, and just what is kind of their motivation throughout Seussical the musical?
- 4:33So I'm playing Sour Kangaroo.
- 4:36She...
- 4:38I call her the mean girl of mean girls.
- 4:40um She just wants everyone to follow her and follow what she thinks.
- 4:50She of course doesn't believe Horton.
- 4:52She's like kind of this like leader of like Horton's crazy, right?
- 4:58Right?
- 4:58Everyone, he's crazy.
- 5:01So she's just a mean girl and I...
- 5:03In my day to day life, I'm not a mean girl.
- 5:07I was gonna say, that's not like you at all.
- 5:10Okay.
- 5:10so playing a mean girl is like, it's fun, cause you just get to dip into this whole other like side of you and it's fun.
- 5:22And Andrea, who are you playing in this narrative and what is their kind of motivation?
- 5:26I'm playing Gertrude.
- 5:27Gertrude has the biggest heart ever and she finds out that she's totally enamored with Horton and his big heart and she just wants to be with him and be close to him and take
- 5:40care of him and he kind of doesn't know she exists.
- 5:44So it's all about her trying to find her voice and stand out a little bit and be true to herself.
- 5:51That's a huge story.
- 5:52Like that's a very heartfelt, uh you know, personal journey for this character.
- 6:01And you are actually playing, you know, you said that your character's in love with Horton and your husband is Horton, correct?
- 6:07My husband is Horton, so you know, I have to try really hard to love him, but you know, I make it work.
- 6:13I was gonna say that makes them more natural.
- 6:15Yeah, but we've never been opposite each other in this, so that's really nice.
- 6:19Has there been any challenges with that, like balancing that?
- 6:23No, just making sure that we're focused on getting our own characters developed and doing what we need to do.
- 6:30And then our boys are in this too.
- 6:32So we have to make sure they're on top of their stuff.
- 6:35And right now I'm knee deep in costumes and who goes where and what's worn to who and if they know what they're doing and if they know what they're wearing and needing.
- 6:45So a little stressed about that, but they'll be fine.
- 6:49They're pros.
- 6:49And once this opens next weekend, it's gonna be perfect and nobody's gonna even be worried about all the stress that it caused, you know?
- 6:55Exactly.
- 6:59And Lauren, who are you playing in Seussical the Musical and what is their motivation?
- 7:03Oh, I am the diva, Mayzie La Bird Her motivation, just anything about herself.
- 7:11She wants to focus on her.
- 7:13She wants all the love and adoration from everyone.
- 7:16I think she thinks she's helping Gertrude at one point.
- 7:19Is she though?
- 7:20I don't know.
- 7:23Her motivation, she sure does.
- 7:26I think they both kind of think they're helping in a certain way.
- 7:30Yeah, Maisie is just all about herself.
- 7:32She is carefree.
- 7:34She wants to travel.
- 7:36She wants to experience life without any burden.
- 7:39um And she is just the total diva.
- 7:42Who doesn't love a diva, right?
- 7:44Right?
- 7:44So sounds like you're all three playing such different ends of the spectrum here, you know, of what your characters are comparatively to each other.
- 7:53Right, oh big time.
- 7:55So Kylie, what is it like to step into the world of Dr.
- 7:57Seuss?
- 7:58I can imagine it's very colorful and vibrant, but like, what is it for you?
- 8:02It is very colorful and vibrant, but it also just I don't even know the best word to describe it like when you think you're a kid and you have this like imaginary world and
- 8:15everything's perfect and Beautiful and it's everything that you ever wanted It it kind of feels like that a little bit for me because I'm a mother I Everyone loves me
- 8:28Everyone is doing exactly what I say when I say it like that's kind of The dream in a twisted way like you want everyone to love you And so I think stepping into that it's like
- 8:43a complete twist from what reality is But it's fun and that's what makes it better is that it's
- 8:52Andrea, what is the experience for you to step back into this like childlike world of Dr.
- 8:56Seuss?
- 8:56Specifically, you're doing this with your family, so that has to add another layer to that.
- 9:00It's so fun and it's so sweet and you can find the joy so easily with so many things.
- 9:06Sometimes life is not like that.
- 9:09It's nice to just escape into this place where there's so many messages and so many good things going on and you're like, gosh, I should totally apply that to my certain situation
- 9:19right now.
- 9:21Or hey, that's a good lesson I gotta remind my kid about.
- 9:25It's just so meaningful to so many people for so many reasons.
- 9:28And Lauren, how about for you?
- 9:30I feel the same way.
- 9:31think that the songs kind of speak for themselves.
- 9:35One of the songs is called Anything's Possible.
- 9:38And when you really listen to those lyrics and apply that to your life, I mean, the world is your stage.
- 9:45I'm lucky enough that one of the children that I nanny is joining us in this show as well as one of the who's and listening to her enjoy this music and sing this music.
- 9:57I really hope that it inspires her.
- 10:00because when I did this back when I was a teenager, those lyrics do speak true volume and I think create so much joy and happiness even throughout Horton's suffering and I think
- 10:14there is still positivity throughout.
- 10:17Speaking of the songs, Lauren, is there a song that you enjoy?
- 10:20Like, what's your favorite song to perform from this show?
- 10:22Do you have a favorite?
- 10:24I think right now it's Amazing Maisie.
- 10:26um That one is just so fun.
- 10:29The Bird Girls we have are phenomenal.
- 10:33They are just killing it with the harmonies.
- 10:35Their costumes are incredible.
- 10:37We have our wonderful Gertrude McFuzz here who I just love getting to play off of.
- 10:42It is such a joy to do that and just have fun and be silly and be the mean girl and be the diva.
- 10:49is so exciting and fun to do.
- 10:51Andrew, how about for you?
- 10:52Is there a favorite song to perform or even just a favorite song from this production?
- 10:58Favorite song to perform right now is maybe the one Feather Tail by Ms.
- 11:01Gertrude McFuzz I just have a lot of fun with that.
- 11:04Still figuring out what that's all about and what I want to do with that.
- 11:09It changes all the time.
- 11:11So I'm always adding and taking away.
- 11:13Sala Salou is a beautiful song.
- 11:16It's a little sadder song in the show, but my gosh, I sing that to myself all the time in the wings when they're performing it.
- 11:25I've heard that song from, think, both your husband and from Cora when I talked to them.
- 11:30both, and maybe even Jerry too.
- 11:31I'm trying to remember.
- 11:32I think everyone brings up that song.
- 11:34It's kind of like an iconic song from Seussical.
- 11:36It's so good.
- 11:38Yeah, so sweet.
- 11:41Kylie, how about for you?
- 11:42A favorite song to perform, or favorite song to listen to, both, whichever you choose.
- 11:48I love to perform Biggest Blame Fool um It is such a diva moment and I love it.
- 11:57um But I really love the Hunch song.
- 12:03I can't think of the name off the top of my head.
- 12:07But it is such like it brings you on such a journey in like three minutes.
- 12:11Yeah, there's also some really cool stage effects.
- 12:14moments, but it also has this like beautiful ending that makes me sob every time.
- 12:20So if you see me sobbing in the wings, um you know what time it is.
- 12:27I was going to say, it's not hard to make you sob though during a show.
- 12:30I've seen a few shows with you and you do cry pretty easily.
- 12:33I know.
- 12:34I just love it.
- 12:35I love the people.
- 12:36I love doing it.
- 12:37I love being on stage.
- 12:39So I kind of want to turn to how do you get into characters?
- 12:42How do you find your characters' mindsets when you're getting up there to either just you're ready to do your scenes, you're ready to sing your song?
- 12:52How do you slip into that mindset?
- 12:55So she has a walk and her hands are always here.
- 13:02Don't know why, but they're always here, they're always up.
- 13:06And so I kind of like assume the position.
- 13:10And then I think of something that makes me like really mad.
- 13:14Okay.
- 13:16just to get that like, smize going?
- 13:19Sure, sure, makes sense.
- 13:21then I turn it on.
- 13:22I'm like, I'm mean now.
- 13:24I'm upset.
- 13:24I'm mean.
- 13:25I like that though.
- 13:25That makes sense.
- 13:26I mean the hands, the kangaroos, but it's also kind of the legally blonde Bend and Snap moment, you know, so we can appreciate that.
- 13:31ah
- 13:33doing multiple shows at once, don't worry about it.
- 13:36We're vibing, we're vibing.
- 13:37oh Lauren, how do you kind of get into the mindset of your character?
- 13:40Like, you have anything specific that you do?
- 13:42Mine is all costume based.
- 13:44Once I put those wings on, that tail on, do the hair, the makeup, the feathers, then it's really easy to turn Maisie on.
- 13:54But I'd say between that and just really getting into the story of the show, it's easy to turn on that character.
- 14:03And she's fun.
- 14:04It's just a great time to have fun.
- 14:06Like you're out at a party and dancing around.
- 14:08That's how I feel Maisie's energy is.
- 14:13I mean, that's so addictive and intoxicating for an audience, I'm sure, to just see you having that much fun in the role.
- 14:18And then we get to have that much fun in return.
- 14:22Andrea how about for you?
- 14:23Is there anything that you do specifically to get into your mindset?
- 14:25play.
- 14:25I play all the time.
- 14:28Even when I know I'm obnoxious, even though I know I look ridiculous, I'm always looking for something, a different way to do it, different way to tweak it, a prop I could use,
- 14:40something with my costume I can use.
- 14:42If I'm listening to a line, maybe it's delivered a little different, maybe I'm going to deliver it a little different.
- 14:48So I change it up a lot, especially during tech week.
- 14:51Like I feel like I'll find a lot of her during tech week.
- 14:54you know, I'll find some gems that I haven't even tried yet and be like, okay, that's got a stick.
- 15:00I'm gonna keep this.
- 15:01We're gonna tweak that.
- 15:02So it's just playing up until the shows and even during the shows.
- 15:06Sometimes you find things in moments with an audience that you were like, oh, okay, yeah, that totally works.
- 15:11I hadn't even thought of that.
- 15:12I mean, that has to be kind of exciting that you can live at life shows, you can change it as you go.
- 15:17You can find keep finding your character as the show is going on.
- 15:21Yes, as long as I'm, you know, within bounds, I'm not throwing other people off.
- 15:25That's the trick.
- 15:26Speaking of this role Andrea, there anything challenging or is there anything that has challenged you about this role as a performer?
- 15:32Just balancing the funny, loud, um big-hearted, all-over-the-place Gertrude with the quieter moments of Gertrude.
- 15:42Trying to make that all work and still read true.
- 15:46that makes sense.
- 15:47Lauren, how about for you?
- 15:48Is there anything that has challenged you about this role as a performer?
- 15:51um Well, I don't like to be mean.
- 15:53I don't like to be mean to people, so having to be mean to Gertrude, Horton, every character involved.
- 16:01It's not always easy, but you know, with the light-heartedness of theater, it makes it easier.
- 16:07And it helps with our incredible director, Jerry, to put on that character as well as I can.
- 16:14It's also hard with Maisie.
- 16:15She's not much of a dynamic character.
- 16:18ah
- 16:19She has no real changes in the show.
- 16:23She stays one certain way and does it the whole time.
- 16:26And that can sometimes be tricky.
- 16:28completely understandable.
- 16:30Kylie, how about for you?
- 16:31How's this challenge to you?
- 16:33kind of leaning towards the same thing that Lauren said, like, I- in my day-to-day life I am not a mean girl, so finding that balance, m but on the opposite side I feel like she
- 16:47really does have a journey of being so, so mean at first.
- 16:52um Everything's about her and she kind of has this journey of like, well, maybe it isn't, like maybe, maybe we could help other people, maybe that's okay.
- 17:02m Also, I've done this show before.
- 17:05I've done this exact same role before.
- 17:08So, trying not to just copy and paste exactly what I've already done, em trying to find a whole new level has been a little bit difficult, but it's also been a fun challenge.
- 17:24I was gonna say that's probably a challenge for all three of you, of just approaching this in such a different way that you aren't just kind of, even if you were playing different
- 17:31characters, you're not just doing the same show that you did before.
- 17:35That has to be a challenge.
- 17:36um Lauren, what kind of themes from Seussical the musical maybe stand out to you or resonate with you most?
- 17:42As I said before, one of the songs, It's Possible, that I think is the biggest theme of the show, ah is really just telling a story that anything really is possible, ah even when
- 17:56it seems like all odds are against you, even when it seems like nobody supports you.
- 18:01ah
- 18:02it can still be done and especially I think with theater kids especially know how hard theater can be, how competitive it can be, how challenging it can be.
- 18:11So to hear that it's possible to make your dreams become a reality, I really think that's one of the most beautiful messages that this show teaches.
- 18:21Andrea, how about for you, what themes from this show really resonate the most with you?
- 18:24Being true to yourself, giving your all, um following your heart.
- 18:31The thing I love about all these themes is that they're all so universal messages that kids need to hear, adults need to hear.
- 18:37Like sometimes we need those reminders of like, be true to yourself and follow your heart and reach for your dreams and never stop.
- 18:43And that is so beautiful.
- 18:46Mm-hmm.
- 18:48Don't let anyone stop you.
- 18:49Kylie, is there any themes that stand out to you specifically?
- 18:52I...
- 18:52There is so much that speaks to our world that's going on in present day.
- 18:58It doesn't matter who you are, it doesn't matter what you look like.
- 19:01You are still loved.
- 19:03And we can all come together and be one and be this big, giant, loving group that helps one another no matter if we're different.
- 19:13And I think that speaks so much about our current reality.
- 19:19em And so if we can just spread a little bit of our physical joy, that'd be great.
- 19:24Speaking of that Seussical Joy, Kylie, what are you hoping that audiences take away from this production of Seussical the Musical?
- 19:29Just any of the messages that we've talked about like be true to yourself be happy Love one another immensely Literally anything, but also just like smile.
- 19:43I just want you to smile during this show
- 19:45And Andrea, about for you?
- 19:46there anything specific you're hoping the audience does take away from this production?
- 19:49Just all the great messages, the great songs that are stuck in your head.
- 19:55I hope, you know, maybe it inspires some people to get involved with theater.
- 19:59Even the littles, you know, there's a lot of ways they can get involved too, or, you know, just bringing some positivity to people and some heart and maybe they can leave the show a
- 20:10little bit lighter that day and a little friendlier with other people.
- 20:14Absolutely.
- 20:15And Lauren, how about for you?
- 20:16What do you want audiences to have from this production?
- 20:18Of course, as the ladies have said, to take away the messages that we've discussed, but also to see how hard and how much work, effort, love that the cast and crew have put into
- 20:31this show.
- 20:33You know, this group is one that does everything on their own.
- 20:36We're on our own productions.
- 20:38And it really involves so much teamwork and collaboration.
- 20:43And when you see the set and these costumes and these characters and the acting and singing, I really hope that the audience can see just how much love we put into this show,
- 20:55because it really is like a love letter.
- 20:59I think that not a lot of people appreciate how much work community theater is.
- 21:04We have real lives, we have jobs, we have families, and you guys are dedicating your time after work, after school, on days that you're tired and you're still pushing yourself
- 21:17through to get the show so that everybody can experience Seussical, but also just theater in general.
- 21:23And that's a lot of energy and effort that you're putting into it.
- 21:26Absolutely, I think community theater is so, so, so important.
- 21:31Everyone dreams of Broadway, but just to come together as a community with people that become lifelong friends, ah especially in Oops!
- 21:40We All Feel Like a Family, everyone is family there, and that's something you just can't get anywhere else, and it really is beautiful.
- 21:48Well, we cannot wait to see it.
- 21:50Thank you, all three of you, for being here today.
- 21:52We are so excited to see Seussical when it arrives.
- 21:55So thank you for talking with us.
- 21:58Thank you.
- 21:58for having us.
- 21:59This was incredible.
- 22:01Yes.
- 22:01So on our own production, Seussical the Musical arrives at the Fraser Performing Arts Center June 20th and runs through the 28th.
- 22:08So get your tickets now and we will see you there.
- 22:11Yay!
- 22:11See you there!
