Latest / Coaches Corner / Luke Murray - Postgame Villanova
Transcript
- 0:00We're joined court side by Luke Murray, coach. Nice turnaround from Tuesday in
- 0:05a lot of categories. What did you look at first when you said,
- 0:08well, we got to do something better this game guard the three point line.
- 0:12You know, that performance the other night was one of the worst defensive
- 0:15performances in several years here, so obviously we needed to do a lot of
- 0:20work to improve that. Villanova's a really good three point shooting team. A
- 0:24big percentage of their points come from the line, and you know, while
- 0:27they missed some open ones that they maybe sometimes make, I think all in
- 0:30all, we did a really good job of being cognizant of the shooters and
- 0:34holding them. A three for twenty four is big time. Yeah, that's
- 0:36huge. You cut ten threes themselves. It was unusually that I went to
- 0:40the Huskies, I hadn't made it three. So you get ten, you
- 0:44take thirty two. Is there ever a number we say let's get We need
- 0:47to get thirty every game in terms of takes for threes. Yeah, I
- 0:50mean, not exactly, but I mean thirty's probably a pretty good number.
- 0:53Four US. Generally, Villanova is a team that gives up a lot of
- 0:56three point shots. That's part of their defensive philosophy. Creating is Creagan does
- 1:00as good a job as anybody in the country in terms of taking away the
- 1:03line. So I thought some more opportunities presented themselves for guys tonight, And
- 1:07obviously I think we could have shot even better with the way Ak shot.
- 1:10But you know, Cam I thought was huge for us. I mean he
- 1:12was able to step up in a big, big way anytime it got a
- 1:15little bit tight, he came through with a big time shot or and and
- 1:19one and really really impressive bounce back from him. Well, obviously was disappointed
- 1:23with how Tuesday night went. Yeah, you know, Dan Hurley in the
- 1:25pregame is talking about him, saying, yeah, you can't search for the
- 1:29perfect shot, you got to maybe create some shots. And he did that
- 1:32tonight on a few different occasions, getting fouled, making a couple of those
- 1:34baseline jumpers. I mean when he does stuff like that, he's an even
- 1:38more impressive offensive player. Absolutely. You know, coaching myself have been talking
- 1:42to Cam a lot, you know, even going back several weeks now.
- 1:46He has a hesitancy to pull the trigger on some of those tight windows.
- 1:49I think he'd prefer to get maybe what he considers a better shot for the
- 1:53team, or maybe kind of draw off the possession a little bit better.
- 1:57And you know, I think for us, you know, as you get
- 1:59deeper and deeper into the season, you played better in better teams. You
- 2:02got to have a you know, a readiness to fire. And he's a
- 2:05big time shooter. He's close to fifty forty five ninety on the season and
- 2:07he's got unreal splits, so any shot for him is a good one.
- 2:12Yeah, nine to thirteen, five of eight from three. My favorite numbers
- 2:15second chance points because you had eight offensive rebounds, so did they You had
- 2:19eleven points off those second chances they had zero. Is that Klingon? Is
- 2:23that the Klingon factor? What is that? Yeah? It is? It
- 2:25is, you know, because I think some of those shots that they got
- 2:29back were ones where they you know, almost chased after it before it even
- 2:31got out of their hand. They knew that they had missed it and were
- 2:34scrambling to get the second shot, and there were some bad bounces that way.
- 2:37Two of those eight rebounds were team rebounds that were just kind of hard
- 2:39to get under control. But yeah, I mean I thought we really offensive
- 2:43rebounded well in the second half. We didn't do that as well in the
- 2:45second. In the first half, I'm sorry, we did a great job.
- 2:46In the second half not so much, but they're a good defensive rebounding
- 2:51team. But like you said, we converted those opportunities. I thought,
- 2:53for the most part, we did a really good job on the defensive glass.
- 2:55We were able to get our ball movement better in the second half as
- 2:59well. I thought in the first half were standing around a little bit.
- 3:00And they're a good defense. You know, they come in as a top
- 3:02twenty defense in the country, so they make you work. Yeah, in
- 3:06the fast break points eighteen to four, and dr was a big part of
- 3:08that. You got you got to help up the bench tonight thirteen to four.
- 3:12D A again a catalyst. When he plays like this, this team
- 3:15can be dangerous. Yeah, for sure. I mean sound was terrific.
- 3:17You know, you know, we weren't happy with how he played Tuesday night.
- 3:21He was out there for twenty one minutes and didn't get a whole lot
- 3:23done. But I thought today, particularly with the way that he guarded,
- 3:25you know, defensively, Brandon Housen is a real X factor and a dangerous
- 3:30dangerous shooter who's been playing great in the eight games since we played those guys
- 3:32last. And you know, he did an unbelievable job of harassing him all
- 3:37over the floor and honestly got us out in the transition game, which,
- 3:39like you said, opened up some easy ones for us. Yeah. Final
- 3:42note, Castle fourteen points, made a couple of threes. He made all
- 3:46his free throws. It looked us at filling over was saying, okay,
- 3:47go ahead, shoot it out there, and then to his credit, I
- 3:52mean, I'm sure you guys are talking to him and you got to say,
- 3:53hey, dude, you got to shoot it if they give it to
- 3:55you. Yeah, I mean, I thought he did a pretty good job
- 4:00stepping up and making all six of his free throws were big. I thought
- 4:01he did an excellent job defensively buy and large, you know on TJ.
- 4:05Bombo, who's a really good player. But you know, again, I
- 4:08think they really played him soft today and he was able to step up and
- 4:12knock down two big ones. You know, I think we probably want him
- 4:14finding that balance, you know, when he can be a cutter, when
- 4:16he can be a driver and not just settle for the shot that they want
- 4:19him taking but I thought he did a nice shot, all right, final
- 4:21thing, I lied, I wasn't my final thought. The Newton we just
- 4:27talked to him. I mean, the guy gets sixteen rebounds. Coach,
- 4:30Come on, are you working with him on rebounding or something. He's not
- 4:32get so many rebounds? He does, he does. He went up and
- 4:35got some big defensive rebounds today, won a lot of those kind of loose
- 4:40fifty to fifty balls and track down some long rebounds as well. He's just
- 4:43got a knock for it, he really does. You know, I think
- 4:45this is his fourth or fifth triple double. It's pretty impressive the way that
- 4:47he's able to rack him up. You know, he's our leading rebounder,
- 4:50and you know, I give him a lot of credit. It's important to
- 4:53him, and he puts in a great effort on the glass. And you
- 4:55know, you don't see triple doubles in college that much. You see him
- 4:58in the pros. They played four eight minutes, a lot of those,
- 5:00no doubt, No doubt. Well, I mean again, he does a
- 5:02great job of rebounding Forest. He's been our leading rebounder all season long.
- 5:06And when guys are making shots, you know, on the perimeter like cam
- 5:10was today. You know, it helps those assists numbers as well. All
- 5:13right, Coach Luke Murray, thanks much, appreciate it, good job.
- 5:15I just come back so
