- 0:00SPEAKER_00: All right, welcome to Around the Pod.
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: We've got Harrison Brown here and Katie Hart, and I've got Josh here helping out too.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: We're at Pickle for Real, which we're very happy that we get to host this podcast at.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: And um, it's been great to show some of our Australian pros to the space because I think Victoria's definitely at the forefront of it all.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: Um, that's enough about us.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: The viewers want to hear about you two.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Can you tell us?
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, can you tell us a bit about yourselves, how you got into pickleball, what have you been doing in the space, and what's the goals going forward?
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um, yeah, Harry Brown from Gold Coast.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, got into pickleball two years ago.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: Um, probably when I got back from America, yeah, mid-2024.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: Um, first tournament would have been Australian pickleball championships.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: And um, yeah, I had a really good run there in the singles.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: And I think that's when I kind of doubled down on the whole pickleball journey, transitioning from tennis to come on to pickleball.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: Um, and just really worked on my game from there.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: I'll just put it out there.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Harry is probably the number one men's singles player in Australia right now.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: And your first event wasn't APC, it was the Redcliffe PPA event back when you first came and you took a set off Joey Wilde.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: And that's what put you on the map.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: There you go.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: I remember seeing, I'm like, who's this tall, lanky bloke that's really athletic?
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: I forgot about that.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: I remember that.
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 1:27SPEAKER_04: It was like the Sub Kirk Smooth one.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: It was I got it from Amazon and it was 20.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: And it was$20, and I was ripping through these 20s with a$20 Amazon.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: No, that's a great story.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: I was like, this guy's legit.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: And I think you did message me after that event because I was like captain at the time, and you're like, oh, can you think about me for the draft?
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: But you weren't quite there yet.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Message me for doubles yet, but your singles was elite.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: For sure.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: Maybe if there was like a single specie, but everyone has to the dream breaker.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, maybe.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: All right, Katie.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:59SPEAKER_04: I'm Katie Hart.
- 2:00SPEAKER_04: I uh have been playing pickleball three, four years now, depending how I look at it.
- 2:05SPEAKER_04: I actually got into it through coaching at like the tennis club I was training at.
- 2:09SPEAKER_04: And my coach Mike Newell brought Pickleball back to our club, and I was just coaching that way.
- 2:14SPEAKER_04: And then I sort of started playing some mixed doubles with him just to help with like my coat tennis fees, and then it just escalated from there when I realized I uh couldn't play tennis anymore, and it was just another way to get my competitive outlet out.
- 2:28SPEAKER_04: Started making some prize money, then I was like, oh, this is fun.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: You did make a splash to the scene.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: We were just talking before.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: 2022 Queensland Championships.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: There's this tall girl that's just fuming when she's walking off the court, like running off the court with her paddle about to throw it.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: You already just started it then.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: So um, but it's great that you've you've obviously risen to the top as one of the top females in Australia.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: So you should be very proud of that.
- 2:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 2:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, definitely didn't like it back in 2022.
- 2:55SPEAKER_04: I was only walking on court to play tournaments, and then I was never training, so don't know what I expected, but that's all right.
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: How much are you liking it now, Katie?
- 3:03SPEAKER_04: A lot more.
- 3:04SPEAKER_04: I still enjoy it.
- 3:04SPEAKER_04: I still have a heart for tennis, but I enjoy my pickleball as well.
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: So you're still playing tennis?
- 3:09SPEAKER_04: I coach tennis, yeah, still.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, cool.
- 3:11SPEAKER_04: Um I'd play it if I could, but I don't have time for that.
- 3:13SPEAKER_02: How are you, Harry?
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: Are you still playing tennis at all and not touching a racket?
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: Haven't touched a racket in must be like a year now.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's been a while.
- 3:22SPEAKER_02: So there was a time when you were doing both.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there was a time when I was doing both.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but it just it ruins your doubles mechanics in pickleball.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: Like it just yeah, like you can't get better at doubles if you're still playing tennis, I feel.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: I saw a comment on Instagram, something about a Tuesday night league up on the Goldie.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: You were mentioning about Tom Evans in that.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I was something.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I saw some videos of Tom playing tennis now.
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: So he's he's maybe moved to tennis.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: Um, but I I used to play a Thursday night league in um at the Gold Coast, and we won it.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: My team.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: Let's go.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: That's huge.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: Pressures on Tom to win it now.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: Hopefully he gets into it.
- 3:56SPEAKER_02: Now, how is the uh the pickleball scene in Gold Coast?
- 3:59SPEAKER_02: What's the main vibe that you guys experience on a day-to-day?
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, um, I just think it's a good community.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of players that are willing to to train at any time of the day.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: So, like a lot of people like aren't employed, or maybe like maybe are just working remotely.
- 4:15SPEAKER_04: We are more unemployed than the rest of the pickleball nation in Australia for sure.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: Um, so we we just have a lot of time on our hands and we we yeah, we just train two to four hours a day, like all of us.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: Um, and it's always someone different to hit with.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: It's not like you're just hitting with the same people every day.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: Um, just rocking up to the courts and just hoping that people are there.
- 4:34SPEAKER_04: Well no, you're like plan it, but there's always people around.
- 4:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 4:37SPEAKER_04: So if we have like a good- we only have one facility that everyone goes to.
- 4:41SPEAKER_04: We're not as lucky as Melbourne.
- 4:42SPEAKER_04: We don't have a bunch of facilities to play at.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: You're gonna give them a shout-out or it's just KDB.
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: Just KDB.
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: It would be nice to have a KDB here too.
- 4:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's like a$60 million facility, but it's just KDB.
- 4:56SPEAKER_05: If it rains, we're screwed on the Gold Coast.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: We had the Australian Nationals the other year, so it's a really big facility.
- 5:01SPEAKER_04: It is a very big facility, but yeah, like if it rains on the Gold Coast, I we have to drive an hour to play anywhere in yours.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: Brisbane.
- 5:08SPEAKER_02: I've seen some reels of all yours there.
- 5:10SPEAKER_02: You guys have all these squidgies on the courts and you're still doing it.
- 5:13SPEAKER_02: You're still playing in the wet though, some sometimes.
- 5:15SPEAKER_02: They do.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: I don't.
- 5:17SPEAKER_04: I don't.
- 5:18SPEAKER_04: I'm not playing in the wreck.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: I still I risk it.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: I need to get my pickle in.
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: Hey, you've survived so far.
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: I haven't seen you injured yet.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: No, knock on wood, no.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: I've been fine.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: Like, even in tennis, never literally never had an injury.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: We shouldn't have said that.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: Well, that's my own.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: Oh no, yeah.
- 5:34SPEAKER_03: That's not blaming the conscience.
- 5:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but that's amazing.
- 5:40SPEAKER_02: I think like that's obviously I think there's pros and cons of having more pickleball centres or just less, because obviously for them, they just can go to the one pickleball center and everyone's there.
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: And I think that obviously builds people to play together.
- 5:52SPEAKER_02: Whereas for us, it's there'll be some of us playing in one and some in another, and you'll never know who's training or what.
- 5:58SPEAKER_02: And so unless you book it and you actually organize it, it's a lot of admin.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: Well, it's like all of us pros in Melbourne are pretty spread out while the Goldie is a small.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: It's a small town like that.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: Like Melbourne's for any international viewers, Melbourne's a much bigger city than the Gold Coast.
- 6:11SPEAKER_04: So And I also think like the Gold Coast, like, yeah, like Harry said, like, none of us work.
- 6:17SPEAKER_04: Besides like Taya, everyone is always around in the middle of the day, so it's also easier for us to get courts.
- 6:22SPEAKER_04: When you have to go before and after work, the courts are just gonna be more busy as well.
- 6:26SPEAKER_04: So we can just train all day and do nothing.
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: Last time I spoke to you about this, Harry, you were you're self-employed.
- 6:32SPEAKER_02: Are you self-employed or have you sacked yourself?
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: No, I uh I still have my role at Aussie.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm still a mortgage broker.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: So it's very, very part-time now.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: Like minimal settlements.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: So should we be directing people to your DMs or not?
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Well, yeah.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: What rate you get people at the moment?
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: Nah, I mean, um, nah, I'm I'm pretty focused on the pickleball side of things, and I'm happy with with that.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: I'm making a decent income with the pickleball stuff.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: So it's, you know, at the start it was kind of like I was a bit worried, but now I've kind of a bit more established and traveling internationally, making prize money, you know, I'm feeling a bit better about it.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: So um, yeah, I'd I'm I'm happy to keep my focus on pickleball.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: Cool.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: That kind of like leads me to my next question with like income and pickleball.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: Like, is there enough right now to do what you guys are doing?
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: And and like after Harry talks about that, like I'd love to hear about your story, Katie, with like your paddle deal you had like last year and and the space right now.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: It is kind of hard to get a paid paddle deal.
- 7:29SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so like I've obviously been in the international travelling circuit longer than Harry.
- 7:35SPEAKER_04: Um, and I've seen it all.
- 7:37SPEAKER_04: And I think internationally you can make money.
- 7:40SPEAKER_04: You know, there's Indian leagues, there's a lot of paid cash tournaments in Asia, and that's where you can make money rather than Australia.
- 7:47SPEAKER_04: You're not making a living just playing in Australia unless you have a paddle deal.
- 7:50SPEAKER_04: I had a good paddle deal with Maxwell last year that funded my whole 2025.
- 7:55SPEAKER_04: They paid me well, but when renewal came at the start of this year, they're like, well, like, what's the point?
- 8:01SPEAKER_04: Like, they're not gonna get revenue from pros in the way they would just being in stores.
- 8:06SPEAKER_04: Like, we're not selling enough paddles, I think, for a lot of paddle companies to be finding it worth it anymore.
- 8:12SPEAKER_04: And I know that's for a lot of pros this year, paddle deals have like slimmed out compared to like 2024, which is when I picked up my paddle deal.
- 8:20SPEAKER_04: I was in India playing the first PWR event.
- 8:23SPEAKER_04: And it was a big event, there were some good names, and I just met a paddle company there, and then I had a deal like a week later.
- 8:30SPEAKER_04: And I covered it, covered my I had just quit my full-time coaching job.
- 8:34SPEAKER_04: So it covered that whole salary I was getting there was covered by this paddle deal.
- 8:38SPEAKER_04: And I was like, oh well, that makes my life a little easier.
- 8:41SPEAKER_04: But coming into this year, before I obviously found Apex, I was a little like, oh, like I'm not gonna be able to fund this by myself, and you're not making enough money to break even all the time.
- 8:52SPEAKER_04: It just depends, especially without having PPA deals, like you're qualifying in Asia to then play number one seed, and you're just not gonna make money.
- 9:00SPEAKER_04: But so it's different for every player.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: What about you, Harry?
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: Do you is it a money-making machine pickleball for you, or is it just kind of breaking even and skinning you through the sport and you get to enjoy life and travel and play competitive sports?
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, I would say it's similar to tennis, like you're just traveling, you know, the expenses really add up.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: It could be like 50 to 100k per year of travel cost, you know, accommodation, food, you know, flights.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: It all adds up.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: Um and then you're kind of like if you're doing well in these tournaments, you can break even on that.
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: Like you, you know, I probably could make 50 to 100k in a year like currently, like where I'm at.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: Um so yeah, it would just be like a kind of a break-even thing.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: Like I because I know like let's say like Rose Van Reek, I know last year playing all the Indian pro leagues, the PPA, the MLP, you probably made close to 250 grand Aussie, which is um just outside of what every other pro in Australia is probably looking at.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: Like, I don't know, I'm a lower end of the pro spectrum to you guys, but it covers your travel and your expenses, and and there is, I guess, different people that can help with all that, which like for you guys, Apex Academy is helping a whole group of people.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: Like, who's part of that?
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: What is Apex, just for people that don't know what it is, and who's who came up with the idea?
- 10:13SPEAKER_04: Um, yes, Apex Academy is uh a growth academy on the Gold Coast, helping fun youthful pickleball players, Harry being the oldest in the group.
- 10:24SPEAKER_04: Hey oh, is he older than you?
- 10:25SPEAKER_04: Oh close enough.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: Still young, Harry.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: Still young.
- 10:28SPEAKER_04: Um, but it's just helping relieve some of those travel costs to certain events.
- 10:34SPEAKER_04: Obviously, like there's the better you do, the more they'll help you because you can go to a few more events and know that you're getting into these Asian events.
- 10:42SPEAKER_04: We've all been struggling to get into qualifying for some of these Asian events.
- 10:46SPEAKER_04: So, like for me and Harry, we go to a lot of these PPA ages, we will qualify, so we've been getting some funding to back that.
- 10:52SPEAKER_04: And I think without that, like, yeah, you just can't afford to travel if you're gonna be stuck in quallies every time.
- 10:58SPEAKER_04: And without them, I probably wouldn't be doing it.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it's yeah, it's a group of 10 of us.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, like as you said, it's a kind of a lot on the younger side.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: Like, we've got a couple teenage guys.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: Um, I think it's gonna be quite heavily focused on the younger generation of pickleball players in Australia.
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: Um, and then you can have some older people.
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: Oh, Joey Wilde.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, that's true.
- 11:18SPEAKER_04: Joey's also a new status in the 30s.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he is, yeah, he is.
- 11:23SPEAKER_02: He is actually the but he is the rookie in Apex now, right?
- 11:25SPEAKER_02: He's the newest.
- 11:27SPEAKER_02: He's the newest, yeah.
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: Um but it's yeah, it's it's really just like a um kind of like more trying to make pickable a team environment.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: So it's such an individual sport, kind of like tennis.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: You know, you go to the these individual tournaments, you play for yourself.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: Um but with with Apex, we kind of support each other at these tournaments and kind of make it like more like a like a college tennis team.
- 11:47SPEAKER_01: There's literally ten of us, and you know, if if I'm watching uh like Lockheed and Lee and playing doubles, like I'll support them, help coach them if there's not a coach available.
- 11:55SPEAKER_01: Um and they would do the same for me if I'm playing.
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: So it's kind of making it a bit more of like a like an environment that's happy for all of us.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: It's kind of like you know, the Victorians, like they s they back each other, they support each other to tournaments.
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like everyone, you know, you have a group that you want to support.
- 12:10SPEAKER_04: Um Yeah, and I think the group environment is makes a big difference.
- 12:14SPEAKER_04: I did I started traveling in 2024 and I was alone and you just you have no one to look at in the crowd and you're by yourself, and it is actually a lot harder.
- 12:23SPEAKER_04: Like I've enjoyed having people around when we go to these Asian tournaments and people to be eat dinner with and just hang out with and hit with.
- 12:30SPEAKER_04: You don't have to worry about trying to meet new people to hit with in these other countries and stuff.
- 12:35SPEAKER_04: So that's been really a good part of it as well.
- 12:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, how did you manage when you were obviously traveling alone?
- 12:40SPEAKER_02: Like, what what are the biggest challenges when you do travel?
- 12:44SPEAKER_04: I think when I was traveling alone, like some of the biggest challenges were the hits, especially in brand new countries.
- 12:50SPEAKER_04: My first tournament was in England internationally, and I knew like Rose was flying in later, and I knew no one.
- 12:56SPEAKER_04: You just have to reach out to them and like just hope they're just nice.
- 12:59SPEAKER_04: And um also like finding venues where back then was obviously a lot harder to train at, and it's just more uncomfortable, and I wasn't used to traveling either.
- 13:11SPEAKER_04: So, like going to Asia, learning things and learning how to deal in Asia and the heat or the food or what to bring from Australia, like you'd just fly there, and then you're like, oh, I have a peanut allergy, so Asia's quite hard for me.
- 13:24SPEAKER_04: Um, so bringing food now is like things like that, like travel, like you learn to travel better over time because I was by myself.
- 13:31SPEAKER_04: Like, where like I think people who like Taya and Josh have traveled with people the whole time, and I think it makes it easier for them because oh, I've done this before.
- 13:40SPEAKER_04: Like, I know in Vietnam you need this, and I know for this country you need that, and so when I was alone, you just like have to work it out.
- 13:47SPEAKER_04: And I think there's more stress on now working out how to travel than there was on like the pickable side of it.
- 13:52SPEAKER_04: But I did do a lot of travel with Rose in 2025 because we were playing so much together though.
- 13:58SPEAKER_04: Um, but when I wasn't, yeah, being alone's just a little boring too.
- 14:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you're a pretty big expert, aren't you, Katie?
- 14:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I need someone to talk to.
- 14:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'd be the worst biggest night.
- 14:09SPEAKER_04: I'd just talk to myself a whole time.
- 14:11SPEAKER_04: I'll drive myself insane and I'm already insane, so drive myself more insane.
- 14:17SPEAKER_02: So when you're on court with Harry, do you talk to Harry or are you just like talking to yourself?
- 14:22SPEAKER_06: I do all the talking.
- 14:24SPEAKER_06: Look, he's just I like say something, he's like, yep.
- 14:27SPEAKER_06: And I'm like, okay, I've just had a whole conversation.
- 14:29SPEAKER_02: How many different words do you say on court, Harry?
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: Do you just say like yep?
- 14:32SPEAKER_02: Yep, okay.
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: Come on.
- 14:34SPEAKER_02: Slang.
- 14:34SPEAKER_02: I have never said that slang.
- 14:37SPEAKER_02: No, you never said slang.
- 14:41SPEAKER_06: I'll say something that yeah.
- 14:42SPEAKER_06: There's like yep, slain, come on.
- 14:44SPEAKER_02: I would love to do like yeah.
- 14:46SPEAKER_02: I would just love to see, like, even tomorrow, obviously at the Melbourne PPA.
- 14:50SPEAKER_02: Um, maybe Katie hits a big win and just remove your slang.
- 14:54SPEAKER_04: No, he takes my credit of everything I do.
- 14:58SPEAKER_04: Every time we're at like these Asian events, I'll do something cool and he's like, yep, that's all me.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: Well, I set up, you know, like I hit a good ding white and she's an earny.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: I'm like, oh yeah, well.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: Has he ever had a rally where he hasn't hit a ball and he goes, yeah, that was me?
- 15:09SPEAKER_04: Yes, yes.
- 15:10SPEAKER_04: It's Joey and Sara in Beijing.
- 15:13SPEAKER_04: There was that rally and the crowd went wild, and you're like, Thank you to the crowd.
- 15:16SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 15:17SPEAKER_04: And I was like, You didn't fucking hit a ball.
- 15:20SPEAKER_05: And you're like, still me.
- 15:22SPEAKER_05: I'm like, okay.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: It's his presence.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: That's why I was about to say it's my presence.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: And I'm taking off the recording.
- 15:27SPEAKER_04: I think it's like a good third, and he's like like closing and they've missed.
- 15:30SPEAKER_04: He's like, Yeah, that was all me.
- 15:31SPEAKER_04: I'm like, okay.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: Well, you know, they're not gonna hit it to me, so they're gonna, you know, angle it out and they miss.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: It's me.
- 15:39SPEAKER_02: They're on the ropes before tomorrow already.
- 15:42SPEAKER_05: That's how it always is.
- 15:44SPEAKER_02: I hope I hope they actually do all right tomorrow else they're never coming back on this pod.
- 15:47SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we'll blame the pod.
- 15:49SPEAKER_05: That's fine.
- 15:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 15:50SPEAKER_02: So what does Apex actually involve like on a day-to-day or week to week?
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: Um, well, there's a lot of facets to it.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: It's it's like training, so like actual on-court training time.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: We we schedule like four to eight hours per week of on-court training with coaching and that stuff.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: And then there's private lessons where it's like three hours a week of private lessons, either individually or with one other person.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: And that's with Ben Coston or Joey Farius, which is huge.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: They have great knowledges.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: There's gym facet of it, so they help you know cover the gym, get personal training three times, four times a week when we're home or we're not traveling.
- 16:24SPEAKER_01: There's uh psychiatrist, like mental, mental side of it of it, where we can book however many like um sessions we want with it with our mental guy.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: Um, there's a dietitian, so we have like the dietary side of it as well.
- 16:39SPEAKER_02: Like that's just a dietary plan, not like they actually cook for you.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: No, no, no, yeah, dietary plan.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: Unbelievable.
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: Um, no, but yes, with plans.
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: Um anything else?
- 16:48SPEAKER_04: We have to do content.
- 16:49SPEAKER_04: Like we have some content people, so we do some content just to get Apex out there and show what they're doing for the community.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean it's the least we can do, for sure.
- 16:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, for sure.
- 16:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:59SPEAKER_02: Um I mean that sounds like a whole that's like a full-time, part-time job.
- 17:03SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 17:04SPEAKER_02: Just to do some content to get it out there, that's that's not too bad.
- 17:07SPEAKER_02: Oh, obviously, perform too.
- 17:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah, like you have to be performing and also just respecting the sport, I think, is a big one.
- 17:13SPEAKER_04: Like respect them, respect the sport.
- 17:15SPEAKER_04: Um, because they just want to see the sport grow.
- 17:17SPEAKER_04: And I know they do really want to push for the kids, and if we're all just being idiots, then it's not gonna work.
- 17:23SPEAKER_04: So I think they are big on like the way you present yourself as well, a little bit.
- 17:27SPEAKER_00: Like, I think the biggest thing for me is like I've been in pickleball in Australia since 2018, and there hasn't been something like this before.
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: Like, I've always thought about ways how I could sport young people, people in the sport, but I think you need some funding behind it, and I'm glad someone's come in, got a big group of people, and you guys are putting Australia on the map even further.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: Um, especially like you got Danny and Sarah and Joey are playing over in the States, and I assume you guys will play a little bit over there too at some stage.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: So it's uh really good to see that we're supporting Australian players.
- 17:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah, 100%.
- 17:58SPEAKER_04: I think, like you said, like with Danny and Sarah in the States, they've got their Apex logos on.
- 18:03SPEAKER_04: I think it just brings attention to bring eyes onto social media in Australia, and then what you guys are then doing, everything just floods down into you've got guys social medias as well, which have actually more followers than the rest of us.
- 18:15SPEAKER_04: And that's a great thing too.
- 18:16SPEAKER_04: That just brings eyes onto us, and then more people will watch the streams, more backers will come into the sport, more venues.
- 18:23SPEAKER_04: And we're getting a few venues now on the Gold Coast because it's growing a little bit.
- 18:27SPEAKER_04: We've actually just got it into school sports on the Gold Coast.
- 18:30SPEAKER_04: I work at a school for tennis, and now it's uh taking over tennis for APS on the Gold Coast.
- 18:35SPEAKER_04: Uh for terms.
- 18:36SPEAKER_04: What do you mean by taken over?
- 18:38SPEAKER_04: So instead of playing tennis teams, are we pickable teams for terms two and three?
- 18:42SPEAKER_01: Oh, I don't know that that's yeah.
- 18:44SPEAKER_04: We pushed it really hard at the school I work at and I was like helping the PT just like learn how to teach it.
- 18:49SPEAKER_04: So um yeah, so for APS on the Gold Coast, yeah, term two and three is now pickable in the set of tennis.
- 18:55SPEAKER_04: And I think that's just so good for youth.
- 18:57SPEAKER_04: That's from seven to twelve, and uh yeah, that's just a good age group for people to start playing.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: Is that a goal?
- 19:06SPEAKER_04: It's a goal for me to play it, but whether it'll be in there is hard.
- 19:09SPEAKER_04: I don't know if it will be.
- 19:10SPEAKER_04: It's a hard spectator.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: If it is, is that like the dream?
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: 100%.
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think like representing green and gold would be there's no better honor than that for sure.
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: Well, we know at the moment the World Cup team, Team Australia, you got selected.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: One of the big dogs.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: Are you happy with that and proud of that?
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: So pumped about that, yeah.
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 19:30SPEAKER_01: I can't wait to uh to to play.
- 19:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, incredible.
- 20:49SPEAKER_02: Now, Katie, I've got a fan question for you, and it's come in.
- 20:54SPEAKER_02: Um wishes to remain anonymous, so I'll keep it anonymous.
- 21:01SPEAKER_02: Of course, no the the question at hand comes from a certain match you actually played.
- 21:07SPEAKER_02: Actually, both of you played this match.
- 21:09SPEAKER_02: It was actually about the Aaron and Nicola match versus Harry and Katie.
- 21:14SPEAKER_04: Oh, the NPL match.
- 21:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, apparently there was an altercation during this match.
- 21:18SPEAKER_02: So the question is do you recall much about the events of this altercation?
- 21:24SPEAKER_02: And are you uncomfortable with a certain new player on your team?
- 21:29SPEAKER_04: No, no, I think everyone understood this wrong.
- 21:34SPEAKER_04: I I was never mad at Nicola or Aaron.
- 21:37SPEAKER_04: It was the ref actually who'd pissed me off in the match before, and all my anger was directed towards her.
- 21:43SPEAKER_04: And when Harry got caught for a hindrance for a come on, I just lost the plot.
- 21:48SPEAKER_04: He did a come on, got caught hindrance, and I just went crazy and nearly got a take for hell.
- 21:53SPEAKER_04: Anyway, I was never mad actually at Aaron or Nicola.
- 21:57SPEAKER_04: It was all directed at the ref, it just looked wrong on the camera.
- 22:01SPEAKER_02: I mean, I haven't watched this, but from the sounds of it, you're actually going really lightly by judging of character of Aaron.
- 22:06SPEAKER_02: I I love Aaron, but he's letting it.
- 22:09SPEAKER_04: Aaron does try to piss me off, for sure.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: I mean he's the master rage better.
- 22:13SPEAKER_04: He is, and he he knew at the time that he had like spun it to the refs to try and get Harry in trouble.
- 22:21SPEAKER_04: Um, but he didn't tell us that till after, so I definitely had a grudge against him, but now he's on my team, so it works for me.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: Aaron Johnson, by the way, I assume we're talking about.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: AJ, yeah, AJ Johnson.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: Um I think she'd also had a pretty bad day before it in um in the Brumbies match.
- 22:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah, in the match, in the match before.
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: So it was just like a long day of competition of things.
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: And that was the last match of the day.
- 22:42SPEAKER_04: So we were tired.
- 22:44SPEAKER_04: It was just it's a two-hour drive for us.
- 22:47SPEAKER_04: Like at this point, I'm like hour five in.
- 22:50SPEAKER_04: I'd been full bagged by Andy Horridge in the match before.
- 22:53SPEAKER_04: Like full step back just whacked it at me when we were like winning.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: Find that clip and chuck it in.
- 23:01SPEAKER_04: So I was just in a mood and I just lost it.
- 23:04SPEAKER_04: And that's okay.
- 23:05SPEAKER_04: People understand.
- 23:07SPEAKER_04: You understand.
- 23:07SPEAKER_02: I would you call it a crash out?
- 23:09SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: Just genuine crash out.
- 23:11SPEAKER_04: And then I just I probably crashed out for the next half an hour.
- 23:14SPEAKER_04: After that match finished, about just everything.
- 23:17SPEAKER_02: Now, obviously, Harry is the captain.
- 23:19SPEAKER_02: Um, you've now drafted someone who was involved in an altercation.
- 23:22SPEAKER_02: Like, what's what's the steps to maintain um the vibe within the team?
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: Listen, listen, AJ, he'll fight for whatever team he's on.
- 23:33SPEAKER_01: So we we I knew this, and for the format of the MPL, he's one of the perfect players for it for my team.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: So I'm actually it's probably better he's on the same side as me than across the net.
- 23:45SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 23:45SPEAKER_01: Um, so yeah, Aaron, Aaron plays that role very well.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: The villain.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: The villain, the master of raising me.
- 23:52SPEAKER_04: He loves it.
- 23:53SPEAKER_04: Even like last week when we were playing NPL, he like commanded a let called when our our team had hit, and I had to tell him, like, no, like we're not getting involved in this.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: I think it was like from the sideline of the women's singles or something.
- 24:05SPEAKER_04: And I was just like, Aaron, no, like we're not doing this.
- 24:09SPEAKER_04: No, I can't do it.
- 24:11SPEAKER_04: So he knows that, but he rage baited me well that day.
- 24:15SPEAKER_02: Does he ever rage bait you, Harry?
- 24:16SPEAKER_02: Or are you like just on a different level?
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: I don't know, he hasn't got me.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: He hasn't rage baited me.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: It's hard to when you're probably 10-0 down in a singles match.
- 24:26SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, yeah, he nearly got me in singles once, but that's a whole nother story.
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: Can you tell us?
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: I I want to know this story.
- 24:33SPEAKER_01: Okay, it was uh the NPL Sydney February 2025.
- 24:37SPEAKER_01: Um he knows the day exactly.
- 24:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he thought about this day for like oh Aaron and I we love this match.
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: Um, and he was playing really good singles at the time, and I think it's the quarters, um, and it's like 13 all, right?
- 24:49SPEAKER_01: First 15.
- 24:51SPEAKER_01: And then so I double fault, I I fault.
- 24:53SPEAKER_01: He gets the side out, he faults.
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: I I think I fault again, and then he faults again.
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: So it's 13 all and there's like four faults in a row.
- 25:01SPEAKER_05: How hard is it?
- 25:02SPEAKER_05: And a quarter final of it.
- 25:03unknown: Yeah, oh my god.
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: And then I yeah, I think I closed it out just after that.
- 25:07SPEAKER_01: But that we were we were laughing.
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: We literally couldn't make the serve, and we were puddling the serve.
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: That's like the funniest part.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: I wasn't even ripping.
- 25:14SPEAKER_02: I actually don't think I've seen Harry miss a serve.
- 25:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was literally trying to just make it.
- 25:17SPEAKER_02: I don't think I've ever seen him miss a serve.
- 25:19SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 25:19SPEAKER_02: Maybe he just plays unbelievable against me, but yeah, yeah.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: Well, he goes through his serve.
- 25:24SPEAKER_00: I've seen him miss a few.
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: I've seen him miss a few.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: A lot of errors come from it though.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: Like maybe I'm just the really unlucky guy.
- 25:30SPEAKER_02: Thanks, Harry.
- 25:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you're welcome.
- 25:31SPEAKER_02: Is that like a respect?
- 25:32SPEAKER_02: He doesn't bring my best luck.
- 25:33SPEAKER_05: He doesn't have to serve as beak against you, some more serfs guy.
- 25:38SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's one way to take it, Katie.
- 25:43SPEAKER_02: Thanks.
- 25:44SPEAKER_02: Hey, by the way, I noticed something about your nails.
- 25:46SPEAKER_02: Like I did.
- 25:49SPEAKER_02: Talk about my nails.
- 25:50SPEAKER_02: Like, let's talk about the nails.
- 25:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 25:52SPEAKER_02: Um, where's the inspo from?
- 25:55SPEAKER_02: How long are you spending on those nails?
- 25:57SPEAKER_04: Um, so I get my nails done every month and I have for five years.
- 26:01SPEAKER_04: Do you do it yourself?
- 26:02SPEAKER_04: No.
- 26:03SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 26:03SPEAKER_04: I have a nail tech at home.
- 26:05SPEAKER_04: If I'm in Asia, I'll get them done there if I have to.
- 26:07SPEAKER_04: I cannot play pickleball with a broken nail.
- 26:10SPEAKER_04: I cannot play pickleball with no nails or a broken nail.
- 26:13SPEAKER_04: If it's broken, I'll go get it fixed straight away.
- 26:15SPEAKER_04: Um and I just get fun sets every time.
- 26:18SPEAKER_04: My nail artist now just knows what to do and I just design them myself and she just puts it the magic to work.
- 26:23SPEAKER_02: So if they if your nail breaks in pickleball.
- 26:26SPEAKER_04: I will go find a nail tech here in Melbourne if it broke tomorrow.
- 26:29SPEAKER_04: Before we find it.
- 26:30SPEAKER_04: I'll finish the match though.
- 26:31SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 26:31SPEAKER_04: I'll finish the day and then that afternoon.
- 26:34SPEAKER_04: But like these are my natural nails for the most part, if they haven't broken.
- 26:37SPEAKER_04: So when they break, it hurts so badly.
- 26:41SPEAKER_04: But yeah, I'll go find a nail tech straight away and get it fixed.
- 26:43SPEAKER_04: I can't play without them.
- 26:45SPEAKER_02: So what are what are you looking for in your nails?
- 26:48SPEAKER_02: Like what design like just fun designs every time?
- 26:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, fun designs, or like I used to get rush nails every time I'd play MLP.
- 26:56SPEAKER_04: Like I can do it to themes of whatever I'm doing.
- 26:58SPEAKER_04: I got like for when I played WPB outside the year, I got matching colours to our uniform.
- 27:03SPEAKER_04: So I'll do that.
- 27:04SPEAKER_04: But if I have nothing on, I'll just do fun ones.
- 27:07SPEAKER_02: What are your thoughts on it, Harry?
- 27:08SPEAKER_02: Does it ever like glow in your eyes when you're playing these dollars together?
- 27:12SPEAKER_04: Dude, you watch it right now.
- 27:14SPEAKER_03: You know, Kindred's Kindred Can't be the same colour as the ball.
- 27:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah, can't do yellow now, it can't be the same colour as the ball.
- 27:24SPEAKER_00: That that brings us to the next bit.
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: What's your biggest pickleball hot take?
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: Hot take.
- 27:31SPEAKER_00: Um or pet peeve, if that's easier.
- 27:34SPEAKER_00: Pet peeve.
- 27:35SPEAKER_04: Oh, I have a lot of pet peeves.
- 27:36SPEAKER_04: But my biggest pet peeve.
- 27:38SPEAKER_02: Can you give us the three?
- 27:39SPEAKER_02: Proper peep.
- 27:40SPEAKER_02: Just give us your top three.
- 27:41SPEAKER_04: I can keep going for hours.
- 27:42SPEAKER_04: My number one is people who can't score and we're playing prop events.
- 27:46SPEAKER_04: Know where you stand and know what the score is.
- 27:48SPEAKER_04: It's not that difficult.
- 27:49SPEAKER_04: If you get the score wrong, you don't know it.
- 27:51SPEAKER_04: Like, that's on you.
- 27:52SPEAKER_04: Like, I actually don't give a shit.
- 27:54SPEAKER_02: Um should wait, should there be a penalty then?
- 27:56SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 27:57SPEAKER_04: There used to be.
- 27:58SPEAKER_04: Wait, if if you used to get the score wrong and I served and you're in the wrong spot, I get the point.
- 28:03SPEAKER_04: Is this confirmed?
- 28:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 28:05SPEAKER_04: I love that rule.
- 28:06SPEAKER_02: I love it as you'd be playing for ages two and you'd have to look at blue.
- 28:09SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 28:10SPEAKER_04: I loved that rule because no one was ever in the right spot.
- 28:13SPEAKER_04: I'd serve, they'd return, I'd catch it, you're in the wrong spot.
- 28:15SPEAKER_04: My point.
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: The refs would point at you and be like, you're in the wrong spot, point.
- 28:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 28:19SPEAKER_00: Also the refs wouldn't tell you.
- 28:21SPEAKER_04: You refs didn't have to tell you no.
- 28:23SPEAKER_04: You had to know where you were.
- 28:24SPEAKER_04: That's believable.
- 28:25SPEAKER_04: That's actually a couple years ago, three years ago.
- 28:28SPEAKER_04: It was when I first started, and I loved that rule.
- 28:31SPEAKER_04: And I would feel like I'd get so many points now.
- 28:33SPEAKER_04: No one knows where to stand.
- 28:35SPEAKER_00: You've got to remember, we've come from a time where we had the chain saucer where you can put a lot of spin on it.
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: Like Web's Vine, who's part of the Apex Academy.
- 28:43SPEAKER_00: He used to serve the ball and it just launched to the side and never.
- 28:46SPEAKER_00: You'd hide your spin and stuff.
- 28:47SPEAKER_00: You can't do that anymore.
- 28:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 28:49SPEAKER_04: I think another pet peeve on paddles is uh any D-LAN paddles.
- 28:53SPEAKER_04: In Asia, it's really bad.
- 28:55SPEAKER_04: Because now we're playing with obviously paddle testing in Australia.
- 28:58SPEAKER_04: When you go to one of these countries with just no, you don't even have to use a legal paddle, it can be anything.
- 29:05SPEAKER_04: That's terrifying.
- 29:06SPEAKER_04: When those people come swinging at you with DLAN paddles, or in like training people using D-LAN paddles or bagging you in training, like lack of control in training, that drives me insane.
- 29:16SPEAKER_04: Like, if you're gonna hit me, at least do it on a nice shot.
- 29:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, fair.
- 29:20SPEAKER_02: That's that's an interesting one though.
- 29:21SPEAKER_02: I I've got obviously from the other side of things, like what if you're playing at a high level, smacking the ball all the time, like maybe the tennis guy's coming through and your paddle DLAMs in like a month, and maybe you don't have a paddle sponsorship.
- 29:34SPEAKER_02: That's you're forking out like let's call it$400 12 times a year.
- 29:39SPEAKER_02: That's a lot of money.
- 29:41SPEAKER_02: True.
- 29:41SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but that's not my problem.
- 29:43SPEAKER_02: That's true.
- 29:44SPEAKER_02: That is true.
- 29:45SPEAKER_04: I just probably won't play with them if they're gonna hit me with their DLAM paddle.
- 29:48SPEAKER_00: Fair enough.
- 29:50SPEAKER_00: Right, Harry.
- 29:51SPEAKER_00: What's your hot takes?
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: Or pet peeves.
- 29:53SPEAKER_00: Oh, pet peeves.
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: I think she's covered it.
- 29:55SPEAKER_01: No, no, no, no, no.
- 29:55SPEAKER_01: You have to have an opinion.
- 29:58SPEAKER_00: The scoring one was my own opinion.
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: Have an opinion, yeah.
- 30:01SPEAKER_00: Call some people out, please.
- 30:02SPEAKER_00: Call some people out that uh couldn't do it.
- 30:05SPEAKER_04: Uh Taya Cross, uh Josh Barber.
- 30:08SPEAKER_04: Who else can't score?
- 30:09SPEAKER_04: Nancy usually is in the wrong spot.
- 30:11SPEAKER_04: She's going straight for the apex.
- 30:14SPEAKER_04: That's true.
- 30:15SPEAKER_04: It's true.
- 30:16SPEAKER_04: Today I had people like had Mexican not knowing where to stand.
- 30:20SPEAKER_04: Who else doesn't ever know where to stand?
- 30:22SPEAKER_02: That's my mixed double's part, I care for carefully.
- 30:25SPEAKER_04: Who else is usually in the wrong spot?
- 30:28SPEAKER_04: There's a there's always a few, there's a lot like in Asian countries where they're just like never in the right spot.
- 30:33SPEAKER_02: I'm like, I actually realize that in Asian countries they actually play way more rally scoring.
- 30:37SPEAKER_02: Well in Malaysia they play rally scoring.
- 30:39SPEAKER_04: China they play rally scoring and they have like their oh China rally scoring is like on a different level of weirdness.
- 30:44SPEAKER_04: You still have to like stack when you're serving, but then you still do rally scoring and then you like go straight up, but it's really weird.
- 30:52SPEAKER_04: It's not like MLP where you swap serves every time.
- 30:55SPEAKER_04: If I win, I'll keep serving on each side, but it is rally scoring, so only one person ever serves, and yeah, it's re it's really hard to know what's going on.
- 31:04SPEAKER_01: And then does MPL do that?
- 31:05SPEAKER_01: The stack?
- 31:06SPEAKER_01: Or no?
- 31:06SPEAKER_01: No, it's just straight up old school rally scoring.
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:11SPEAKER_05: Now pick a pet peeve.
- 31:13SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 31:14SPEAKER_02: You've had some time, Harry.
- 31:15SPEAKER_02: She's loosened three.
- 31:16SPEAKER_02: Alright, let's go.
- 31:18SPEAKER_01: Let's just go people that hit more lets me.
- 31:22SPEAKER_01: Oh, I mean, like mine.
- 31:25SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, yeah.
- 31:27SPEAKER_01: You know what people hate about me is when I hit let chords on them just over and over again.
- 31:32SPEAKER_01: It's what I told you.
- 31:32SPEAKER_02: The recent tournament, I reckon you hit about four on me in a short match.
- 31:36SPEAKER_04: Harry is the person who hits the most let cords in pickable until he's on court with me.
- 31:40SPEAKER_04: Then his let cords disappear.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they do.
- 31:44SPEAKER_01: No, there's actually one guy more than me, Josh Nipperas.
- 31:47SPEAKER_04: Oh, he does heal.
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: He hits more than me.
- 31:49SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm.
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: How do you?
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: Well, I had Mitch Chargraves on before, and he was saying that like once you hit four net chords in a row, it's not a fluke anymore.
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: That's sometimes like you guys have such small margins that you you kind of you're not aiming to hit the top of the net, but you're aiming to try and get just above that.
- 32:05SPEAKER_00: You want it at that lowest point.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: So let's mean if it's working.
- 32:08SPEAKER_01: Josh Knipp and I had a couple drill sessions um where we only practiced hitting net chords for like hours.
- 32:16SPEAKER_01: So sometimes it is on purpose.
- 32:18SPEAKER_01: Well, what was that like?
- 32:19SPEAKER_00: Just you have to keep grabbing the ball from the back of the side.
- 32:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, literally, like it literally, like always just went to the top of the net and just dribbled it back on our side.
- 32:26SPEAKER_02: But when we need it, it comes out.
- 32:28SPEAKER_02: There's such a difference.
- 32:29SPEAKER_02: You didn't hear it from our last pod, but we had Brian and Darkey on, and Brian said he could not be bothered with drilling.
- 32:35SPEAKER_02: And you got the complete opposite with this guy.
- 32:36SPEAKER_02: This guy's even gone to the limits of practicing net chords.
- 32:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:40SPEAKER_01: I'll practice on wet chord, I'll practice net chords.
- 32:43SPEAKER_01: Like I'll drill.
- 32:44SPEAKER_02: You are the epitome of professional athlete.
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't need to uh I don't need a play, I just need to drill.
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: Let's go.
- 32:50SPEAKER_01: Can't wait to mention that in the commentary tomorrow.
- 32:55SPEAKER_00: Just drills net chords.
- 32:56SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 32:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah, every time he hits one.
- 32:58SPEAKER_04: Just yeah, that's he practices that.
- 33:00SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 33:01SPEAKER_02: Final bit we'll do is uh a different segment.
- 33:04SPEAKER_02: We're gonna do a Love Island thing.
- 33:06SPEAKER_02: This is actually started by Nikki Mal.
- 33:08SPEAKER_02: Uh one of the sweethearts of Gold Coast.
- 33:11SPEAKER_02: Eligible bachelor.
- 33:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he actually is one.
- 33:14SPEAKER_02: He is very knowledgeable as well.
- 33:17SPEAKER_02: We're gonna, I've been involved in this, I'm not gonna get involved.
- 33:20SPEAKER_02: What we're gonna do is you guys are gonna draft one guy, two guys, two girls each.
- 33:24SPEAKER_02: Well, and that's including Aaron.
- 33:26SPEAKER_02: Aaron's gonna get involved because I haven't seen Aaron do this yet.
- 33:29SPEAKER_05: It's a lot of people.
- 33:30SPEAKER_02: Now, according to Nick, a good applicant for Love Island is a narcissist, but you can have your rationales for drafting someone to Love Island.
- 33:42SPEAKER_04: Okay, do they need to be single?
- 33:43SPEAKER_02: That's what he believes is a successful applicant.
- 33:45SPEAKER_04: Do they need to be single in real life?
- 33:47SPEAKER_02: Nah, okay, so preface this as a hypothetical.
- 33:50SPEAKER_02: Everyone in pickleball is single.
- 33:52SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 33:52SPEAKER_02: What a big hypothetical.
- 33:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 33:55SPEAKER_04: We're a taken community.
- 33:57SPEAKER_04: Um, okay, how you can go first.
- 33:59SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 33:59SPEAKER_01: Number one male, Liam Jesperson.
- 34:02SPEAKER_01: Boom.
- 34:03SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 34:04SPEAKER_01: He just needs reps.
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: He needs reps.
- 34:07SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry.
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: Sorry, he needs reps.
- 34:09SPEAKER_01: Continuing the whole drill session.
- 34:13SPEAKER_01: Sorry.
- 34:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's uh for sure number one pick for me.
- 34:17SPEAKER_04: Um for my first guy, it has to be Zach Grab.
- 34:22SPEAKER_02: I just I'm gonna say Zach Grab has come on this episode many times now.
- 34:26SPEAKER_04: Ah well, I don't even think I need an explanation then.
- 34:31SPEAKER_00: That needs no explanation.
- 34:32SPEAKER_00: Well, I know for a fact that he applied for Love Island, Zach.
- 34:34SPEAKER_00: So know him very closely.
- 34:36SPEAKER_00: Um, my guy, Jason Taylor, I think he would be unreal on Love Island.
- 34:41SPEAKER_00: I could see him on the real island.
- 34:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's like off the charts, like just he'd be and he always loves having his top off.
- 34:48SPEAKER_00: Like he's actually perfect for the show.
- 34:49SPEAKER_06: That's so true.
- 34:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's so true.
- 34:54SPEAKER_00: He's like staying grounded.
- 34:55SPEAKER_04: He'd be great entertainment on TV during his meditation.
- 34:59SPEAKER_04: That'd be funny.
- 35:00SPEAKER_00: Well, I remember on Instagram like last year.
- 35:02SPEAKER_00: Didn't you guys stay in summer common together?
- 35:03SPEAKER_04: He stayed in my house in earlier this year and he was meditating on my neighbour's front lawn because the vitamin D was over there and not at my house.
- 35:11SPEAKER_02: What a guy.
- 35:13SPEAKER_02: That takes a lot of confidence.
- 35:15SPEAKER_04: Yeah, shirtless, as you said.
- 35:17SPEAKER_02: Shirtless on someone else's lawn that you don't know.
- 35:19SPEAKER_04: Shoeless at 7am in the morning.
- 35:22SPEAKER_02: Love me some J2.
- 35:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 35:23SPEAKER_02: That's amazing.
- 35:24SPEAKER_02: We'll go back to you, Blitzy.
- 35:25SPEAKER_02: We'll go back and forth.
- 35:27SPEAKER_02: Another guy draft.
- 35:28SPEAKER_02: Nah, you well, you can go a guy or a girl.
- 35:29SPEAKER_02: Up to you.
- 35:30SPEAKER_02: Uh draft order.
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: Nicki Mell.
- 35:33SPEAKER_00: Surely, like I know.
- 35:35SPEAKER_00: What a guy.
- 35:35SPEAKER_00: Like chirp fest.
- 35:37SPEAKER_00: I feel like he'd be just chirping all the blokes on Love Island and you'd be rocking with the no top, everything.
- 35:43SPEAKER_02: I reckon there's a lot of like sabotage on other people from Nicki Mell.
- 35:46SPEAKER_02: He's playing he's thinking about this 24-7.
- 35:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 35:49SPEAKER_02: As in who he's sabotaging, who he's leaning towards.
- 35:54SPEAKER_02: There's a bit going on there.
- 35:55SPEAKER_02: No wonder he created this game.
- 35:56SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 35:58SPEAKER_04: I mean, I think you just have to pick Mitch.
- 36:01SPEAKER_04: I think he's just that's why he's popular and pickable.
- 36:04SPEAKER_04: But yeah, you just have to pick Mitch.
- 36:06SPEAKER_04: He's just your traditional Aussie bloke surfer from Sydney.
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: Shout out to Betty, his fiancee.
- 36:12SPEAKER_00: We spoke about her before with Mitch, but um he actually was a stunt double for Ryan Gosling.
- 36:16SPEAKER_04: So that's such cool stuff.
- 36:18SPEAKER_00: Very attractive guy.
- 36:19SPEAKER_00: He's been in stunt double or in the movies, and and obviously I think he'd be great rocking in uh Love Island.
- 36:24SPEAKER_04: He'd get followers, and that's I think half the reason people go on it.
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: Alright, my second pick is gonna be Hamish Bartos.
- 36:36SPEAKER_01: What a good Blizzard pick.
- 36:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, great bloke.
- 36:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, traditional Aussie.
- 36:40SPEAKER_01: Um, he would love it in there.
- 36:41SPEAKER_01: But um, yeah.
- 36:42SPEAKER_01: Recently taken.
- 36:43SPEAKER_02: Yep, I believe taken.
- 36:44SPEAKER_02: Oh recently taken for sure.
- 36:46SPEAKER_02: Very loved up.
- 36:47SPEAKER_02: Not on an island, but very loved up.
- 36:49SPEAKER_02: You know what's really interesting from the outside is typical drafts, actually, the females go first.
- 36:55SPEAKER_02: They get picked first.
- 36:56SPEAKER_02: You guys have all picked two guys first up.
- 36:59SPEAKER_02: No females have been picked up.
- 37:00SPEAKER_04: The guys in pickable are more out there than the girls, though.
- 37:03SPEAKER_04: Yeah, like personality.
- 37:05SPEAKER_02: I'm not gonna say anything.
- 37:06SPEAKER_02: You guys go ahead.
- 37:08SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 37:09SPEAKER_01: Um, girl.
- 37:12SPEAKER_01: I'll go Millie Smythe.
- 37:13SPEAKER_01: Millie Smythe.
- 37:14SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 37:14SPEAKER_01: I was gonna go.
- 37:15SPEAKER_01: She's come up a few times.
- 37:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was gonna go there too.
- 37:18SPEAKER_05: Wow.
- 37:19SPEAKER_05: Pudge.
- 37:20SPEAKER_02: Why?
- 37:21SPEAKER_02: I I I don't know much about Millie, so I mean, yeah, she's just outgoing, bubbly, like um yeah.
- 37:27SPEAKER_01: English accent.
- 37:29SPEAKER_04: Things should be good on the reality TV show.
- 37:31SPEAKER_04: She's like a talkative, she's a talkative person as well.
- 37:34SPEAKER_04: So I think they like it.
- 37:35SPEAKER_01: Like Love On Australia, there's always like you know, a British person or you know, some foreign person.
- 37:38SPEAKER_01: So she could be the international pick.
- 37:41SPEAKER_01: International flavour.
- 37:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah, uh-huh.
- 37:44SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna go Nancy.
- 37:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 37:46SPEAKER_04: I just think she like one looks stunning for her age.
- 37:50SPEAKER_04: So and I just think she's a good personality as well.
- 37:52SPEAKER_04: Really fun, really out there, athletic, perfect.
- 37:57SPEAKER_02: That's a good pick.
- 37:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 37:59SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna go Victorian Beat Horsley.
- 38:05SPEAKER_00: We just wanted to be.
- 38:06SPEAKER_00: She got to the final rounds of the block, which is a completely different show.
- 38:09SPEAKER_00: Sorry, what?
- 38:09SPEAKER_00: Wait, wait, what?
- 38:10SPEAKER_00: Because she's an architect.
- 38:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 38:11SPEAKER_00: She only got on the block a couple years ago, but I think NPL and MLP seasons came up and she didn't get chosen.
- 38:17SPEAKER_00: But um, I think she'd be great on Love Island.
- 38:19SPEAKER_00: I think she I believe she's still single and she she's always ready to mingle with people.
- 38:23SPEAKER_00: So I think she'd be great on Love Island.
- 38:26SPEAKER_04: That's a good one.
- 38:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 38:29SPEAKER_02: NPL MLP seasons have done no wonders though.
- 38:31SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 38:31SPEAKER_02: That's true.
- 38:32SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 38:33SPEAKER_02: Um, snake draft, back to me.
- 38:35SPEAKER_00: Um I've run out of girls.
- 38:38SPEAKER_00: Oh, it's tough.
- 38:39SPEAKER_00: Um, Katie Hart.
- 38:44SPEAKER_00: Also a frequent on frequently if you want, you can do your audition right now to that camera for 26.
- 38:52SPEAKER_00: You want to do a quick mobile.
- 38:58SPEAKER_05: Oh no.
- 38:59SPEAKER_05: I think I'll eat them alive.
- 39:01SPEAKER_05: I'll kill someone.
- 39:03SPEAKER_05: Um I just couldn't be on a show like that.
- 39:06SPEAKER_02: There'll be a lot of talking to your stuff at this point, Katie.
- 39:09SPEAKER_02: Just like you on court.
- 39:10SPEAKER_05: Oh.
- 39:11SPEAKER_02: There's no response back.
- 39:13SPEAKER_02: No, no, no.
- 39:13SPEAKER_00: I'm just like in the corner, like still getting to fights or something.
- 39:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, 100%.
- 39:19SPEAKER_00: Everyone would hate me if you punch in the other girls.
- 39:22SPEAKER_00: Pull B.
- 39:23SPEAKER_00: Pull B.
- 39:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 39:27SPEAKER_05: Oh, okay.
- 39:29SPEAKER_05: I think.
- 39:29SPEAKER_05: Hmm.
- 39:31SPEAKER_04: Who can God that's hard.
- 39:34SPEAKER_04: Maybe Gianni.
- 39:36SPEAKER_04: I think she's like a sweetheart.
- 39:38SPEAKER_04: She is also s single, I believe.
- 39:41SPEAKER_02: So Gianni Martin, for those who do have no idea.
- 39:43SPEAKER_04: Yes, and she's pretty again, and she's blonde, and I feel like there are just always blondes on Love Island.
- 39:49SPEAKER_04: And she's smart, she's a lawyer, I believe.
- 39:51SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 39:51SPEAKER_04: So get the smart people on there.
- 39:54SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna end it off with uh Tao.
- 39:57SPEAKER_01: Another blonde.
- 39:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, another blonde.
- 39:59SPEAKER_01: You gotta go blonde to Love Island.
- 40:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, friendly, she's single, she's ready to mingle.
- 40:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you can go on that.
- 40:07SPEAKER_05: Slightly crazy.
- 40:07SPEAKER_05: That's always good on the show.
- 40:09SPEAKER_05: And French potatoes, so I'm allowed to say that.
- 40:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 40:13SPEAKER_02: Incredible one is that there was an omission on Harry Brown and your pics, all of you.
- 40:19SPEAKER_02: And he's normally one of the first picked.
- 40:21SPEAKER_02: How are you feeling after that, Harry?
- 40:23SPEAKER_02: That's okay.
- 40:23SPEAKER_02: It's all good.
- 40:24SPEAKER_05: Harry's.
- 40:25SPEAKER_05: That's what you're saying on the outside.
- 40:27SPEAKER_00: He'll be my next pick for sure.
- 40:29SPEAKER_01: I was number seven.
- 40:29SPEAKER_05: I've been around Harry enough to know he can't speak enough.
- 40:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 40:35SPEAKER_01: I feel like I wouldn't do what the show would want me to do.
- 40:37SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 40:38SPEAKER_06: I think he wouldn't do any of the challenges.
- 40:41SPEAKER_01: Mr.
- 40:41SPEAKER_01: Nice Card.
- 40:42SPEAKER_06: He wouldn't have pulled for chats.
- 40:43SPEAKER_06: He wouldn't do any of the challenges.
- 40:45SPEAKER_06: You'd just sit there and tear.
- 40:46SPEAKER_01: No chance on pulling anyone.
- 40:51SPEAKER_03: I agree.
- 40:52SPEAKER_00: Amazing.
- 40:53SPEAKER_00: Um, I just want to finish with one last question.
- 40:55SPEAKER_00: What's your the proudest moment in pickleball?
- 40:58SPEAKER_00: Let's finish with a good serious one.
- 41:00SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 41:01SPEAKER_01: I would say for me, like it's tough to say one.
- 41:05SPEAKER_01: For me, I love the team aspect of things.
- 41:07SPEAKER_01: Um so I would say like both of my Australian opens, winning both of those um the two years it's been on, um, and then the two NPLs that I've won.
- 41:16SPEAKER_01: Um there's nothing better getting it than getting it done with like a team than like being a captain in like a in in in a role like that and getting people over the line.
- 41:26SPEAKER_02: You've had some really good success.
- 41:28SPEAKER_02: You need four of four on all of it.
- 41:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:31SPEAKER_01: Huge team guy.
- 41:31SPEAKER_01: Big team guy.
- 41:32SPEAKER_01: Oh, and mid-season.
- 41:34SPEAKER_01: Maybe five and five.
- 41:35SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 41:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:38SPEAKER_01: I love a team.
- 41:39SPEAKER_04: That was just a big flex.
- 41:40SPEAKER_04: Big flex.
- 41:41SPEAKER_01: Can you back that?
- 41:42SPEAKER_05: No, I should have gone five.
- 41:46SPEAKER_05: Oh my god.
- 41:49SPEAKER_05: Um my big I don't even know.
- 41:55SPEAKER_00: Best win.
- 41:56SPEAKER_00: What win have you made the most money from?
- 41:59SPEAKER_00: Would you know that?
- 42:01SPEAKER_00: God.
- 42:03SPEAKER_00: Have you beat any good, really good US females?
- 42:06SPEAKER_04: Um, I think my biggest win would be like I mean Sarah Bear beat Megan Fudge in India last year, 2025.
- 42:14SPEAKER_04: I think that was a big win because I'd lost to her so close multiple times before that.
- 42:19SPEAKER_04: So that was a really good win, actually.
- 42:21SPEAKER_04: Um other than that, I think another proud moment for me was like my first ever international event.
- 42:26SPEAKER_04: Me and Rose had match point on Megan Fudge and Susanna Bar, and at that time they were winning everything.
- 42:31SPEAKER_04: And I was like, holy dooly, I can play pickleball.
- 42:34SPEAKER_04: Sweet.
- 42:36SPEAKER_04: That's how I felt.
- 42:37SPEAKER_04: But other than that, I think being rushed captain was always a really proud moment for me.
- 42:41SPEAKER_04: I just enjoyed that team was immersed by me and the colours they made and the logo and the nails.
- 42:47SPEAKER_04: The nails they were in the colours.
- 42:48SPEAKER_04: So they all had to get nails.
- 42:49SPEAKER_00: You should have got them all.
- 42:50SPEAKER_04: I did buy the boys' pink shorts last year.
- 42:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Ariane and Lucas looked good in the pink shorts.
- 42:55SPEAKER_04: They looked good in the pink shorts.
- 42:58SPEAKER_04: Ariane Bardia.
- 42:59SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 43:00SPEAKER_00: Amanda Bardia's brother.
- 43:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 43:02SPEAKER_04: Hey, they put a team together.
- 43:03SPEAKER_04: They've been playing some tournaments together in the States.
- 43:05SPEAKER_04: They're welcome.
- 43:07SPEAKER_04: There you go.
- 43:07SPEAKER_00: Well, I just want to say a big thank you for you guys jumping on the pod.
- 43:11SPEAKER_00: Um Josh and I really appreciate it.
- 43:12SPEAKER_00: And so when you're down in Melbourne, why not speak about your story a little bit?
- 43:16SPEAKER_00: And for a bunch of people that might not know who you guys are.
- 43:18SPEAKER_00: Did you guys want to shout out your Instagram handles so people can follow?
- 43:22SPEAKER_04: Katieheart.p.
- 43:24SPEAKER_00: I can say it with more confidence than that.
- 43:29SPEAKER_00: Like you're not on Instagram every day.
- 43:31SPEAKER_00: Like it's like you introduced a TikTok girl.
- 43:34SPEAKER_00: That's like me.
- 43:35SPEAKER_00: Harrison Brown.
- 43:36SPEAKER_00: Pickleball.
