- 0:09is your Inside the Birds post today, and of course
- 0:12it is a Friday edition and we got a lot
- 0:15of fun stuff happening in the pills after the deadline.
- 0:18They are making news today because of their lineup, but
- 0:20the news is almost being trumped by the news in
- 0:23Dallas and Washington today. This is like a holy mackerel.
- 0:28This is like the dog going back in the flame, Like, uh,
- 0:32what is going on here? Michaeh Parsons, Adam Kaplan and
- 0:36Terry McLaurin two major names in the NFC East. Let's
- 0:41start there and get your take on it. Is this
- 0:44just that it's early training camp? Michael Parsons Terry McLaren
- 0:48both asked to be traded from their teams.
- 0:51Speaker 2: All right, let's start with the one that is just
- 0:55happened right the last two hours of Michael Parsons through
- 0:59Twitter to this is where I saw it or x
- 1:03he requested a trade and he filled in the blank
- 1:04for he actually gave out more information than I knew.
- 1:08I knew about seventy five percent of it. But there
- 1:11was some stuff that was really fascinating. So basically what happened,
- 1:14Mike is because they were going to do Dak Prescott's contract,
- 1:20and they did it leading up to last seas. In fact,
- 1:22they got it done right before last season, and they waited.
- 1:25Of course, they wound up doing a deal. It was
- 1:28way over market at sixty million years, So that was
- 1:30their big deal they're going to do. They did some
- 1:32others by the way, but they made it clear to
- 1:35Parsons and his agent, David Mullagetta, that they couldn't do both.
- 1:40The cash ben was just too big, okay, So it
- 1:44was just to get done this year. Parties made it
- 1:47pretty clear through his agent to make sure that they
- 1:52talked to the Cowboys. Well, basically Jerry has not return
- 1:56any messages. They basically Parsons and his agent have gone
- 2:01through the contract negotiators, Todd Williams and Adam Persica and
- 2:07there's the guys who handled contracts. So nothing could get
- 2:11done without Jerry signing off on it because he's the
- 2:13general manager and the owner. And that's that's what was
- 2:16the last line of defense. That's that's when things get moving.
- 2:19But the thing is, now, this is what I knew
- 2:22but Parsons took it a step further. So basically the
- 2:25word got around and got out and I had heard
- 2:28about it that Jerry Jones was talking to Micah in
- 2:32the off season privately and they were talking contract. And
- 2:37what Parsons apparently did is he ended it. He He's like,
- 2:40wait a minute, are we are we we're not negotiating contract.
- 2:43Why we talk? They talked pretty heavy about what it
- 2:45could look like, guaranteed money and all sorts of stuff,
- 2:49and then Jerry Jones spoke started training him as oh yeah,
- 2:52Micah and I talked a lot, smartest player I can
- 2:55ever remember talking contracts. And so basically there was a
- 2:58negotiation done in Parsons didem quite know that he was
- 3:00he was getting that. It was that deep into it.
- 3:03And word from the Cowboys, from certain people was, you
- 3:06know what, I think we've got a framework for a
- 3:07deal here. But the problem is the agent. You should
- 3:11never good agents, and David Mulliget is one of the
- 3:15top agents out there. They typically don't want to give
- 3:17up leverards shi to wait till the club, we'll call them,
- 3:19then we'll start start talking. But that hasn't happened here.
- 3:23So that's where it stands. So Parsons he had enough.
- 3:25He's frustrated, he's having to hold in. He's at practice,
- 3:29going new he's not working. He's going to meetings, but
- 3:32he's not practicing. He'd had enough. And see his teammates
- 3:35are are Mike is you know, are chiming in? Stephen
- 3:39Lamb I know exactly what ceed he's talking about. And
- 3:41then Mike didn't appreciate, you know, he talked Jerry Jones
- 3:43talked last week.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Mike.
- 3:44Speaker 2: I'm sure you saw this. But while the last time
- 3:46they did a deal like this guy missed two THURSDA
- 3:49of the season. That was Dak Prescott. So and then
- 3:52and then Stephen Jones. I don't know why. Stephen Jones's
- 3:54son said this. Who's the CEO? He said, well, Mike
- 3:58has got to want to get a deal done. Like
- 4:00what does that says to mean?
- 4:01Speaker 1: Yeah, well he has got to want to get a
- 4:03deal done. But instead he put out a huge expository
- 4:07today that basically said I no longer want to be here.
- 4:10So in reality, do we see Michael Parsons on another
- 4:13team or do we see him in Dallas.
- 4:16Speaker 2: They're not gonna be bullied They're just not going to
- 4:19be that. Mclaurin's different story will get set a minute. No,
- 4:22it's super highly unlikely that they would trade him. He's
- 4:25our best football player. But this is standing operating procedure
- 4:31to have contractual issues. Now this has gotten ugly, let's
- 4:34face it. Teams will call we know that's gonna happen
- 4:38to check in. I'm sure they'll be told no, dice.
- 4:43Now what I would tell you is, and I've talked
- 4:46about this on your show many times over the years
- 4:48about when I called the Raiders about Cleil Mack in
- 4:50twenty eighteen, they told me in June and July, early
- 4:53part August, there's your chance we're not trading him. Stop asking.
- 4:57All your reporters are calling, He's not being traded, John
- 5:02Gruden basically common to your personnel control from Reggie McKenzie.
- 5:06He told mackenzie, I don't have the date of it.
- 5:08I think it was late August. You know what he's
- 5:11not gonna report, Let's trade Khalil Mack. And Reggie actually
- 5:14went on the record saying he reluctantly did it. He
- 5:16didn't want to do it. Now, if Jerry Jones, if
- 5:21it got super ugly. Maybe they take calls, maybe they listen,
- 5:24but right now it's highly unlikely. I've used this phrase
- 5:27for eight years on Inside the Birds and never see never.
- 5:30But the reason why I came up with that is
- 5:32because you know what, Howie especially, we went to the
- 5:35Dary Sleigh situation when they told him earlier in the
- 5:38day three years ago, okay, we're cutting you. Three hours
- 5:41later if they did an extension with more guaranteed money.
- 5:43So I've learned my lesson, you could be told it's
- 5:46not going to happen, don't worry about it, and then
- 5:48something could change. I just don't see any way they
- 5:50would do that with their best football player, who, by
- 5:54the way, is is done everything they've asked. I from everything,
- 5:59I know, everything that Parsons said is true in terms
- 6:03of handling it the right way. Didn't cross this distraction.
- 6:06Now he should not be He shouldn't have to practice
- 6:09like he should do a holding because Mike Keith, with
- 6:13the with the forty million a year deals getting done. Parsons,
- 6:17who's going to play on just his fifth year option
- 6:20at just over twenty four million, You can't play on
- 6:23that deal. You just can't. So they know they have
- 6:26to do something.
- 6:26Speaker 1: All right, Well, we'll keep an eye on that obviously,
- 6:28as the NL East has been kind of flipped upside down,
- 6:31or not the NL least the nfcast has been kind
- 6:33of flipped upside down today because well not today only,
- 6:37but yesterday. Terry McLaren apparently he has gone through a
- 6:42contract situation all off season long. He wants about twenty
- 6:45seven million dollars a year or thirty million dollars a year.
- 6:47The team's offering around twenty seven million dollars a year,
- 6:50and McLaren now wants to be traded. Is this a
- 6:53legitimate story or will McLaren be in Washington?
- 6:57Speaker 2: It's legitimate. I'm gonna explain something which I learned the
- 6:59heart way many many years ago. So when AGM was
- 7:03not they when the players drafted, there's what we call
- 7:06less of allegiance to the player. You don't feel like,
- 7:08oh God, this is my guy, I drafted him. It's
- 7:11not that Adam Peters doesn't want want him. They absolutely
- 7:14want to extend his contract. But we have to understand
- 7:17and I'm not saying this is the right way to
- 7:19look at it, but it's just the way it is.
- 7:23Terry McLaurin turns thirty in April. Okay, so he's twenty nine.
- 7:28He's twenty nine right now. You have to be And
- 7:31this is what a lot of people in the league thought.
- 7:34These feelers were crazy at extending and paying TJ. A.
- 7:38Watt for guaranteeing three years of his contract. Even if
- 7:43you do Mike a three year extension, you're going to
- 7:46have to guarantee you two years. Now, that's not a
- 7:48big deal. But he's also and this is not his fault.
- 7:53His numbers aren't like super great, But you always have
- 7:55to look at what's the context. Look at the quarterbacks
- 7:57prior to last season. Not very good quarterback played, not
- 8:00very good on line play, what a couple of There
- 8:03are three things that I know about the situation and
- 8:05how how this worthyse things stand. They acknowledge, They know
- 8:10that McLaurin is not only one of the best players,
- 8:13he's super high class, high character, also very durable. He's
- 8:18everything wanting a teammate. He's not a dominant physical guy.
- 8:22He's around six feet two o seven to two ten.
- 8:26They don't want to do Metchifs contract. By the way,
- 8:28DK Metchiffs is about two years younger. People forget about
- 8:30that mckiss a little bit younger. But Terry McLaurin has
- 8:34done on another circumstances, he's been a terrific football player.
- 8:38I just don't get the sense that they seem as
- 8:41a big time thirty two to thirty three million dollars
- 8:43year guy. Now we are in early August, Mike, these
- 8:47things almost always work out, as you know, like ninety
- 8:50seven out of one hundred, something happens where even the
- 8:53guy doesn't get the deal that he's looking for. They
- 8:56do a bridge deal, they do something to make each something,
- 8:59get this overwet so they can move on. But now
- 9:03we have to kind of see what McLaurin does here.
- 9:04I talk to someone close to him this week who
- 9:07felt that they were ways apart, and everything I've heard
- 9:11would suggests that's still the case. I don't see them
- 9:16doing thirty three million beating the Metcalf deal. I just
- 9:19don't see that Mike guy, based on again, they didn't
- 9:24draft him this this front of us. I know people
- 9:26don't like to hear that, but that that's real and
- 9:29Metcalf's making actually thirty three million, thirty two point nine
- 9:32to nine million, so right, now it's they're not close
- 9:36to that.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Well, those are two big stories to keep an eye on. Obviously,
- 9:39inside the NFC East, you got Michael Parsons and Chary
- 9:43McLaurin both requesting trades and that could Boy, if those
- 9:47two guy didn't trade it, it would be a huge
- 9:50shift in the NFC. With the Eagles obviously it's still
- 9:53the favorites. You would have two teams that would have
- 9:55huge losses. Now, one guy, Michael Parsons, he is a
- 9:59pretty good rusher. You've been around this Eagles team. You've
- 10:02seen a couple of practices. Now we're about a week in.
- 10:05Uh defense does the Eagles defense? I mean people wondering
- 10:08he got all these new faces over there. How's it
- 10:11coming together? Does it look like it's coming together? Or
- 10:14is there something missing?
- 10:16Speaker 2: Yeah? I think it's See here's the thing, Like we've
- 10:17used this phrase for eight years. Depth is not about
- 10:20how many players you have. It's about the quality of
- 10:21the players. And let me start at ed show. Noland Smith,
- 10:28you know, has coming back from a serious injury. You
- 10:29know he's healthy and fine, he's practicing, But well, Nolan
- 10:33Smith be the same. He really came on. He had
- 10:35over ten sacks if you include the playoffs. Had a
- 10:37great playoff run. By the way, let we know that
- 10:41he's going to be one of their d rushers, Like,
- 10:42that's not question. The other thing is a jelic Hunt
- 10:44will start. He's not a high end d rusher yet,
- 10:47He's just not. He's very talented, he's got great left
- 10:50and athleticism. He's put on the side that they want
- 10:52him to, but he's unproven as a pass rusher. These
- 10:55our's a lot got off to a quick start. He's
- 10:56kind of faded. Josh Uche is taking more staffs over him. Uh,
- 11:02he's been really steady, steady. They really like him. The
- 11:05conquerors there that they that Cleveland cut Powell Ryland, you know,
- 11:08is a rookie, probably won't dress on game day. And
- 11:12then Johab Campbell's in developmental periods, has been worked with
- 11:15on the edge, but he's his reps in practice are
- 11:19really inside backer. So Mike, I think what I think
- 11:23what Eagles will do is they'll assess this position through camp,
- 11:28through the preseason, then make a decision whether they'll sign
- 11:30a guy like the Jarius Smith, Preston Smith, Matthew Judah
- 11:34and Shaq Barratt even Clowney though clowny stuff, I don't
- 11:37see it why he wants to be a starter. They
- 11:41don't need anyone to start, They just need a third
- 11:43h rusher, Mike, like Ojelari's got to be the third dresser.
- 11:47He's been with the Giants. That's that's the guy needs
- 11:49to show up to be quite frank, that's what's going
- 11:51to happen here.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Well, definitely keep an eye on that. And obviously, by
- 11:55the way, there would be a problem. Zero point zero
- 11:57percent chance the Cowboy would ever tree with the Eagles.
- 11:59Michael Park, anybody out there who's thinking about that, you
- 12:03can cross that off your list.
- 12:04Speaker 3: How's the cornerback situation going right now?
- 12:08Speaker 2: And this is another problem, Mike, It's it's really dead
- 12:13even between Keey Ringo and Dory Jackson. Ringo's taken more
- 12:18first team snaps in the last three days, but Jackson
- 12:21took them a majority of them the first three days
- 12:23of the first three days. So it's some people might
- 12:27say Ringle has got a little bit of an advantage just
- 12:28because he's the guy that want to win it, no
- 12:31doubt about that. But we're going to have to get
- 12:33through training camp but I would tell you though, Mike,
- 12:37if they're not happy, and we'll get to the free agents.
- 12:40They're also looked potentially for a trade. Why because they're
- 12:44not just going to accept that they can't get back
- 12:45to the super Bowl. That's not the way the Eagles think.
- 12:48And they're really young on that side of football. But
- 12:52they're just not getting enough play at the cornerback position.
- 12:57They got to get better play. Now. Who are the
- 12:59free Asians out there? The Sante Samuel Junior would be
- 13:01a starter. He's coming back from a neck issue. He
- 13:04hasn't He needs to get cleared like you could get
- 13:07cleared in a penalty, but you got to get cleared
- 13:09by clubs. So he's got to visit clubs and get
- 13:11take physical to see where he's at. Stefan Gilmour is
- 13:14out there, mid thirties. He's actually older than Darius Slay Mike.
- 13:18He's not a great fit for the Eagle scheme because
- 13:20he's more of a man corner. The Eagles play heavy
- 13:22zone now. Kennel Fuller Mike is a good name. He
- 13:25played for Vic Fangio two years ago. That would be
- 13:27a name to watch. And Rassell Douglas he's a zone corner.
- 13:31You know, time has kind of taken off. He's around thirty,
- 13:34but you know what, he's got length and he would
- 13:36fit from his own standpoint, But Kennel Fuller would be
- 13:39the guy there at a corner if they look towards free.
- 13:41Speaker 1: I feel like Russell Douglas just bounces all over the
- 13:44place every single year and then always seems to make
- 13:46like a big play somewhere wherever he ends up.
- 13:48Speaker 2: His best ball was with Green Bay. That that's where
- 13:51he played really really well with Eagles, like they actually
- 13:56reduced his RFA tenor one year. I remember doing some
- 13:59more porta on and I've just not seen that before.
- 14:03He was immature here. He had to grow up, he
- 14:05had to kind of leave and get things right, and
- 14:07he became a quality player. I mean, he's a you'd
- 14:10rather have him at this point. It's your third corner,
- 14:11but you could start if you didn't too.
- 14:13Speaker 3: All right, what about the safety spot?
- 14:14Speaker 1: We know there's a big battle going on there is
- 14:17this a in house fixture?
- 14:18Speaker 3: Do they need to start going through the rolodecks?
- 14:21Speaker 2: All right? So blanket ships starting. Mccooba worked today, non contact.
- 14:25That's good. He's back from the shoulder this is and
- 14:29with Sidney Brown they got to get through this thing
- 14:32that and they've got Tristan McCollums. So as long as
- 14:36nobody suffer as an injury Mike where they're not gonna
- 14:38be ready for the start of the season, they don't
- 14:39really need to do anything else. So like Andre sam
- 14:41number thirty one, who was an undrected free agent last year.
- 14:44Now it is a buyer's market. Mic of course Justin
- 14:47Simmons would be the number one guy. Why because he
- 14:49knows the Vangio scheme. Marcus Williams of the Eagles had
- 14:52significant interest, made a huge offer to many years ago.
- 14:56Speaker 3: Mike.
- 14:56Speaker 2: You might remember many years ago he signed with wind
- 15:00Up signing with Baltimore. He was cut by the Ravens.
- 15:02He didn't play, He got bench last season. So he's
- 15:05not a guy you really want to go after. But
- 15:06he's out there. Jordan Poyer, former Eagle, by the way,
- 15:11near the enemy's career.
- 15:12Speaker 3: Oregon State man, Oregon State.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Yeah, and he was a boy. That's what I'm sure
- 15:17the Eagles would like to have back. They didn't give him.
- 15:19He was a seventh thrond pick. They didn't give him.
- 15:20God enough Tryandre Diggs who played for a number of teams.
- 15:25Washington you might remember him, and then Seattle and Tennessee.
- 15:31He still wants to play. He's out there. Von Bells,
- 15:33longtime start in the NFL on the back nine of
- 15:36his career. Jalen Mills by the way, he started for
- 15:38the Jets last season, Marcus May who's had a number
- 15:42of injuries, former starter for the Saints. And Shashaan Gibsonson
- 15:45here in his career. So it's a buyer's market. Egles
- 15:47don't need to do anything now, but they have to
- 15:51make sure that they're happy with mccoober or Sidney Brown
- 15:54and then they'll be fine. If not, that's a list
- 15:56of freezers.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Does this feel like that Simmons had just been kind
- 16:00of sitting and waiting around in the event that the
- 16:03you know, Eagles got a chance to evaluate they call him.
- 16:07Does it feel like that or does does he have
- 16:09no interest from any other team?
- 16:11Speaker 2: No, it's simple it not a lot of safety has
- 16:14to sign. The last actually the first two is training.
- 16:17Can very few sign and it's over glutted and he's
- 16:21a system fit. No, the Eagles are I don't know,
- 16:24I don't I don't feel like Simmons is waiting. I
- 16:26don't get that that sense. I'm sure his Asian Todd
- 16:29Francis is talking to he was about it. But the
- 16:32Eagles really want mccouber brown to step up here and
- 16:34seize the job. Cidy Brown's got a ton of reps
- 16:37by the way, with the ones barbar's because mccooba is
- 16:40a rookie and then got hurt and you know, City
- 16:42now knows the scheme and last summer d in practice,
- 16:45so now he's ready to roll. He's healthy. You know,
- 16:48they they played him a safety. He's played a little
- 16:50nickel in training camp, so let's see what happens. I
- 16:54don't know that he's a great fit for the scheme
- 16:56because they really need to cover safety. But he is
- 16:59getting better, all right.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Uh, there's football at four today from Adam Kevin. By
- 17:02the way, it's alumni weekend. Is there a certain Philly
- 17:06alumni that you would be excited to bump into it
- 17:10Citizens Bank Park if you were going to a game.
- 17:12Speaker 3: You should see this list. There's like sixty names on
- 17:14this list, but.
- 17:15Speaker 2: Is my one of my favorite Phillies? So to Gucci
- 17:19on the list, he is not on the list.
- 17:20Speaker 3: Souci. Oh, that's a good pool. That's a good though.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Dude, Bosher and I have such a we we love
- 17:28the obscuse. Like Rod Booker's one of my favorites.
- 17:30Speaker 3: Rod Booker, there's a good one who.
- 17:32Speaker 2: Couldn't hit his way. Say, I'm old enough to remember
- 17:34you and I talked about Larry McWilliams, you know, a
- 17:36couple of months ago. I could believe you got that
- 17:39one because he had to remember the funny delivery. Yeah,
- 17:41of course, but I'll say this much. I forgot how
- 17:44great Jay Roll was j Roll and then I and
- 17:48I totally forgot he the most hits in Philly's history,
- 17:50right over Mike Schmidt.
- 17:51Speaker 3: I got that late in his career he ended up
- 17:53passing him.
- 17:54Speaker 2: I forgot how great of a leadoff hitter he was.
- 17:56And the one year what did he have? Like twenty
- 17:59five trip was the something one year is.
- 18:01Speaker 3: Crazy boy won the MVP.
- 18:05Speaker 2: He was unbelievable. Yeah, he he's not to me. He's
- 18:08obviously going to the Phillies Hall of Fame, but he's not in.
- 18:10I don't think it'll be mll be and you know,
- 18:13being then Pro football, Pro Baseball Hall of fame. But
- 18:15what a great Philly and great dude. And uh, I
- 18:18honestly no, my SCHMIDI was right up there for me.
- 18:22So I'll enough to remember Gary Maddox and certain Phillies
- 18:25you're growing up. That's a tough one. But I favorite
- 18:28Phillies moment, well two of them. Nineteen eighty tug McGraw,
- 18:34you know, obviously closing out the game against the Royals.
- 18:36But the brad Lidge was it if you had the playoffs,
- 18:40was a forty seven for forty seven, forty eight for
- 18:43forty eight. I've never seen anything like that in my life.
