- 0:58- This is Scott Becker with the Beckers HealthCare
- 1:01- podcast.
- 1:03- Thrilled today to be joined by a brilliant
- 1:05- leader at a fantastic
- 1:06- health system.
- 1:08- We're joined today by Jamie Bailey.
- 1:10- Jamie serves as executive vice president and the
- 1:13- chief financial officer
- 1:15- at UTMB,
- 1:17- University of Texas medical branch, UTMB, a magnificent
- 1:21- system.
- 1:22- Jamie, so excited to visit with you today.
- 1:24- We'll talk about
- 1:26- trends, what you're most focused on,
- 1:28- yourself, and and a lot more.
- 1:31- Jamie, can you take a moment and introduce
- 1:33- yourself and also tell us about UTMB?
- 1:36- Yeah. Absolutely. Thank you, Scott. Like like you
- 1:39- said, Jamie Bailey,
- 1:41- executive vice president and chief financial officer at
- 1:43- UTMB.
- 1:44- I've been at UTMB since, 04/01/2024,
- 1:48- so a couple of years.
- 1:50- Prior to that, I was at, Baylor College
- 1:51- of Medicine for twelve years, so familiar with,
- 1:54- sort of health systems in the Houston and
- 1:56- Galveston metropolitan area for quite some time.
- 2:00- By way of background,
- 2:01- I'm sort of a pure finance and accounting,
- 2:04- major,
- 2:05- starting my career at, Deloitte in their financial
- 2:08- advisory practice in Chicago,
- 2:10- and sort of made my way to health
- 2:12- care, like I said, about fifteen years ago.
- 2:15- So it's been an interesting ride, in Germany.
- 2:17- UTMB is a very, very unique place. It's
- 2:20- been around since 1891.
- 2:23- So the oldest medical school, sort of West
- 2:25- Of The Mississippi.
- 2:27- So a lot of history, a lot of
- 2:29- culture there.
- 2:30- But, from a health system perspective, I think
- 2:32- we still have a lot of a lot
- 2:34- of opportunity to grow.
- 2:36- Roughly 1,100 beds in total,
- 2:38- over 100,
- 2:40- clinics,
- 2:41- across the Southeast,
- 2:43- Texas and Houston,
- 2:45- region and area.
- 2:47- But I think we have a lot of
- 2:49- opportunity to grow. So how we embark upon,
- 2:52- AI capabilities, how we continue to be,
- 2:55- more efficient in in supply chain, how do
- 2:57- we,
- 2:58- incentivize our physicians in the right ways, right,
- 3:01- thinking about different compensation plans and models. Those
- 3:04- are all things that are, sort of top
- 3:07- of mind, for UTMB.
- 3:09- But I think we have a lot of
- 3:10- opportunity.
- 3:11- We're in a growing market, in the state
- 3:13- of Texas, and so it's exciting to kind
- 3:15- of,
- 3:16- be along that journey,
- 3:18- in a competitive,
- 3:19- environment.
- 3:21- And so I'm going to,
- 3:22- give you a quiz question.
- 3:24- And you're gonna have to tell me,
- 3:27- what the answer is to this if you're
- 3:29- ready to participate in this quiz.
- 3:32- Alright. Let me know if you're ready and
- 3:34- if you're,
- 3:35- not too nervous or anything of that sort.
- 3:39- I think
- 3:40- I'm ready. Yeah. You're you're you're ready to
- 3:42- go. Okay. So here is the question.
- 3:45- I'm gonna give you two people
- 3:47- and you're gonna tell me who said this
- 3:49- famous quote.
- 3:51- Okay? Okay. Doctor Joakim Reiser, a a magnificent,
- 3:55- magnificent leader. You're gonna say, is this quote
- 3:57- attributed to him or the next person? Okay?
- 4:00- So we got Joakim Reiser, great leader, CEO,
- 4:03- UTMB.
- 4:04- The second person is Kurt Cignetti.
- 4:06- And you'll know who Kurt Cignetti is because
- 4:09- you're an Indiana graduate and Yeah. I assume,
- 4:11- hopefully, you might, you know, follow it and
- 4:13- stuff like that. So Yep. Who said, is
- 4:15- it doctor Reiser or Kirkman
- 4:18- Signetti
- 4:19- that said,
- 4:20- Google me, I win?
- 4:22- Oh, that Signetti.
- 4:24- Yes. Correct. Correct. No. Listen. When, when he
- 4:28- first arrived, I mean, he he came in
- 4:30- first arrived in Indiana, he came in guns
- 4:32- blazing. So, yeah, that that one's a that
- 4:34- one's a easy one.
- 4:35- Yes. And and it's so not doctor Reiser's
- 4:38- personality to say that kind of thing or
- 4:40- to act like that. He's so much more
- 4:41- understated
- 4:42- and one of the most brilliant, wonderful leaders,
- 4:44- but coach Cignetti has had incredible success as
- 4:47- well. So that's that. So you're a Kelley
- 4:50- School graduate of business. I'm a U of
- 4:52- I person in accounting and finance too. And
- 4:54- then you also went to Rice, a magnificent
- 4:56- graduate school. Talk to us a little bit
- 4:58- about
- 4:59- let let me take a step back. UTMB,
- 5:02- the trends you're watching in health care right
- 5:04- now, UTMB has got magnificent leadership between yourself,
- 5:08- doctor Reiser, and others, and in a in
- 5:11- a great system, what trends are you watching
- 5:13- currently?
- 5:14- Yeah. We're watching a lot of trends. Right?
- 5:16- So there's a lot of, political things. There's
- 5:18- a lot of, health health care specific things
- 5:21- that we are we are tracking.
- 5:23- Right? There was just news, the other day
- 5:25- in Houston Chronicle and other outlets around, you
- 5:27- know, Medicaid and Medicaid eligibility and how they
- 5:30- may impact us and, you know, I think
- 5:32- they said on average, Texas hospitals are losing
- 5:35- about $27,000,000
- 5:36- a day.
- 5:38- So we're trying to always kinda keep ahead
- 5:40- of, or abreast of all those types of
- 5:43- policy type, changes. Right?
- 5:46- I mentioned that, you know, Houston and Texas
- 5:48- Medical Center and Galveston area is a growing
- 5:51- population. So how do we account for the
- 5:53- changes in that population and population growth? Right?
- 5:56- And we have a aging population as well.
- 5:59- So how do we sort of, stay on
- 6:00- the forefront in terms of our,
- 6:03- patient,
- 6:04- journey,
- 6:05- and patient experience from that perspective?
- 6:07- There's been a lot of questions and changes
- 6:10- in the research area. You know, there's been
- 6:13- a lot of funding cuts, from the NIH,
- 6:15- for example. There have been questions around indirect
- 6:18- rates on research, etcetera.
- 6:20- And then, you know, our students. Right? How
- 6:22- do we continue to attract the best and
- 6:25- brightest?
- 6:26- Those are all things that are on the
- 6:28- forefront of our of our minds. I would
- 6:29- say the other thing that was very,
- 6:33- energetic from doctor Reiser coming on the board,
- 6:35- which was about three years ago,
- 6:37- so he actually brought on a fourth mission,
- 6:40- and that's innovation.
- 6:41- And so we've embarked upon,
- 6:44- an exciting journey on innovation front. So how
- 6:47- do we turn, you know, discoveries into commercializable,
- 6:51- activities?
- 6:52- How do we take advantage of AI? Right?
- 6:54- So we've developed a new AI center.
- 6:57- We've, appointed a a chief AI officer, right,
- 7:01- in doctor Peter McCaffrey.
- 7:02- We've established many committees around AI. How do
- 7:05- we evaluate different opportunities? How do we evaluate,
- 7:08- you know, in house activities around AI, taking
- 7:11- advantage of that. So we have a lot
- 7:13- of things,
- 7:14- sort of in the hopper around,
- 7:16- all these areas, but it's exciting. It's challenging,
- 7:20- but very exciting.
- 7:21- It it it really is remarkable what the
- 7:23- system is doing and what you're doing.
- 7:26- You know, I I I'll come back to
- 7:28- the Google Me, I win concept in a
- 7:30- second because
- 7:31- UTMB,
- 7:33- it it could easily be
- 7:35- Google us, we provide great care, and we
- 7:38- innovate, and and we educate. It's really amazing
- 7:40- what what UTMB
- 7:42- does and what you're doing. Talk a bit
- 7:44- about, Jamie, about the next year. What are
- 7:47- you most focused on heading into 2027?
- 7:50- What are you most focused on and excited
- 7:52- about?
- 7:52- Yeah. I think, growth in AI.
- 7:55- So from a growth perspective, I think we've
- 7:57- seen, you know, double digit growth since,
- 8:00- doctor Reiser joined us on in terms of
- 8:02- top line revenue and overall budget.
- 8:04- So we're embarking upon,
- 8:06- eclipsing $4,000,000,000,
- 8:09- in total revenues,
- 8:11- next fiscal year, which started for us three
- 8:13- days ago.
- 8:14- So our fiscal year starts September 1.
- 8:17- So, we are focused on growth. We just,
- 8:21- approved
- 8:22- a $300,000,000
- 8:23- expansion in our League City campus as one
- 8:26- of our more,
- 8:27- growing areas. So we wanna continue to provide
- 8:29- patient care.
- 8:31- We have a lot of opportunities in our
- 8:32- cancer care program,
- 8:34- and really expanding upon that.
- 8:36- So we're really focused on growth. I think
- 8:39- we have a lot of opportunity, and like
- 8:41- I said, we're in a growing market, from
- 8:43- a patient perspective. So we wanna make sure
- 8:44- that we can meet that demand,
- 8:46- that we serve and provide service to,
- 8:50- our customers and our patients. So,
- 8:52- really focused on that.
- 8:54- Fiscal year twenty seven,
- 8:56- doctor Reiser has coined it as the year
- 8:58- of AI for UTMB.
- 9:00- So,
- 9:01- we are heavily focused on that. Like I
- 9:03- mentioned, we established the council to evaluate opportunities.
- 9:06- We are,
- 9:07- almost every day evaluating,
- 9:09- new and different initiatives around that. So how
- 9:12- do we build out certain
- 9:13- pilot programs?
- 9:15- How do we develop use cases, right, and
- 9:17- and then actually,
- 9:19- execute on those use cases. So we got
- 9:21- a lot of things that are, still in
- 9:23- its infancy stages. Right?
- 9:25- But I think there's a lot of opportunity
- 9:27- there, and it and it spans the cross
- 9:29- across all of our missions. Right? So when
- 9:31- you think about, supply chain,
- 9:34- when you think about even from a HR
- 9:35- perspective. Right? How can we be more efficient
- 9:38- in talent acquisition?
- 9:40- Revenue cycle is obviously one that's right, with
- 9:43- a lot of AI, capabilities. Any function,
- 9:46- right, that has a lot of, what I
- 9:48- would say, lesser value add activities,
- 9:51- right, mundane activities that people do day in
- 9:54- and day out, we wanna figure out if
- 9:56- there's ways that we can be more efficient
- 9:59- on that front. And so every mission is
- 10:01- exploring different ways and opportunities to evaluate that,
- 10:05- and we wanna make sure that we execute
- 10:07- on that. So I think there's a lot
- 10:08- of opportunity.
- 10:09- It will provide a lot of more higher
- 10:12- level and hopefully more satisfying work, for all
- 10:15- of our folks, whether that's a staff member,
- 10:17- whether that's a student, or a a clinician
- 10:20- seeing patients. Right? We wanna make sure that
- 10:22- they're operating at sort of top of license.
- 10:24- Right? Top of their skill set. And so,
- 10:27- that's what we're focused on for us is
- 10:29- really growth in AI.
- 10:31- Right. No. I absolutely I absolutely love that.
- 10:33- And and, Jamie,
- 10:34- you have this great leadership career,
- 10:37- incredible knack for both numbers and people and
- 10:40- dealing with things. Talk a little bit about
- 10:42- in such clarity of mission, what advice would
- 10:45- you give to emerging leaders, Jamie? What do
- 10:47- what do you advise somebody trying to have
- 10:48- a leadership career, trying to have an impact?
- 10:50- Talk a bit about what what advice do
- 10:52- you give to emerging leaders? Yeah. My my
- 10:54- leadership style is to empower
- 10:56- people,
- 10:57- to make decisions. Right? We can talk about
- 11:00- certain parameters. We can talk talk about certain
- 11:02- guardrails right around,
- 11:04- some of those decisions, but I want them
- 11:06- to be motivated and empowered to make decisions.
- 11:08- So I am not a micromanager whatsoever.
- 11:11- I like to,
- 11:13- provide leadership by example as well.
- 11:16- So putting in the hard work,
- 11:18- and, you know, evaluating, you know, challenging situations
- 11:22- on a daily basis. Right? I wanna be
- 11:24- an example.
- 11:25- But I wanna empower my people. So I'm
- 11:27- not gonna be an expert in every,
- 11:29- area. I'm not gonna be an expert in
- 11:32- all domains, you know, but we have certain
- 11:34- skill sets across the board. And so I
- 11:36- wanna be able to,
- 11:38- leverage,
- 11:39- my team, their skill set, their perspective,
- 11:42- right,
- 11:43- and their experience to make decisions. And so,
- 11:46- that's sort of my leadership style. And so
- 11:48- I would encourage anyone who is embarking upon
- 11:51- a leadership journey to
- 11:53- focus on people development
- 11:56- and focus on empowering their team.
- 11:58- I've come to realize,
- 12:00- right, less and less of my day to
- 12:03- day job, if you will, is about crunching
- 12:05- numbers.
- 12:06- It's less about executing on certain spreadsheets
- 12:10- or, you know, typing up that memo of
- 12:13- understanding.
- 12:14- Right? It's more about people management, and it's
- 12:17- all about how do you motivate people, how
- 12:19- do you explain to them how their role
- 12:22- fits in, But then also giving them the
- 12:24- tools, the resources,
- 12:26- etcetera, to make the decisions.
- 12:28- And then, you know, recognizing that no one's
- 12:30- perfect. Right? There's gonna be mistakes. How do
- 12:32- we learn from that? How do we account
- 12:34- for changes in the environment? But, ultimately, it's
- 12:37- all about the people. So,
- 12:39- my career,
- 12:41- you know, started off. Right? You gotta be
- 12:43- detailed in in a certain skill set. Right?
- 12:45- Whether that's finance or accounting or, you know,
- 12:48- just general business,
- 12:50- ideas and concepts. Right? But as you grow
- 12:52- in your career, it's less about those things.
- 12:55- And so I feel like the most successful
- 12:57- leaders are the ones who can navigate that
- 12:59- journey between getting out of the weeds of
- 13:02- a spreadsheet per se,
- 13:04- and really evaluating how to manage a team
- 13:07- and make sure that that team can be
- 13:09- successful.
- 13:10- Thank you. No. And I and I and
- 13:12- I love that and that concept of moving
- 13:14- early on in your career,
- 13:16- task execution,
- 13:18- getting things done
- 13:19- to further on in your career,
- 13:21- to leading, growing, empowering others, and and and
- 13:25- and seeing that strategy and aligning teams, I
- 13:27- think it's such a great, great perspective on
- 13:30- it. I think that's right on.
- 13:32- Jamie, I wanna thank you for taking the
- 13:34- time to visit with us today. I I
- 13:36- love watching UTMB.
- 13:38- It's one of the,
- 13:40- I I don't wanna see the one of
- 13:41- the it's one of the best systems in
- 13:42- the world that doesn't get as much
- 13:45- notoriety as it should because it's such a
- 13:47- great system. And and I and I wanna
- 13:48- thank you for your leadership and for joining
- 13:50- us down the Becker Healthcare podcast. We're big
- 13:52- fans. Thank you very much. Thank you. We
- 13:54- appreciate it, and and we agree. We wanna
- 13:57- get, we wanna get our name more out
- 13:58- there. And so we're looking forward to that
- 14:01- journey. Yeah. It's exciting.
- 14:03- Thank you so much for joining us today
- 14:05- on the, the Becker's Healthcare podcast. Just remarkable.
- 14:07- Thank you so much. Thank you.
