- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Hey, welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:18This week is a very special one week hiatus from our study in
- 0:23Isaiah. I am very busy this particular
- 0:27week, and so I'm recording a couple of shorter episodes that
- 0:30are based on some of my favorite portions of Scripture.
- 0:33And so starting off today with Romans chapter 8 and verse #1
- 0:41this is a letter from the Apostle Paul.
- 0:43He's writing it to the church at Rome.
- 0:45He has not yet been there. The church at Rome was well,
- 0:50churches in Rome were very interesting because one of the
- 0:54Roman Empire, sorry, one of the Roman emperors had exiled a
- 0:59bunch of Jewish individuals from the city.
- 1:03So there were only Gentiles that were there.
- 1:05The gospel came, several of the Gentiles believed in the Lord.
- 1:10They became Christians. They started, if you will,
- 1:14meeting together in in some small house churches, but
- 1:19eventually the Jewish people were able to come back to Rome.
- 1:24Some of those Jewish believers had become Christians.
- 1:27And so now you have both a ethnic and religious divide in
- 1:34some people that, if you will, do church very differently, but
- 1:39they worship the same Jesus. And so they had some questions
- 1:42about what it meant to be a Gentile or to be a Jew now that
- 1:49they were Christians. And so that's what the book of
- 1:51Romans is all about, is what does it mean to be a follower of
- 1:57Jesus? What do we need to believe and
- 2:00practice together as believers? And so, if you will, chapters
- 2:04one through 3 of Romans are everyone was in trouble due to
- 2:09sin, all of humanity, and that goes for the Gentiles and it
- 2:12goes for the Jews. Everyone was in trouble.
- 2:15Chapters four and five say Jesus was the solution, that through
- 2:21faith in God, not through a keeping of all of the works of
- 2:25the law, but through faith in Christ, we enter into salvation.
- 2:30And Jesus died for all kinds of people, not just for the
- 2:35Gentiles and not just for the Jews.
- 2:38Just like as Adam sinned, everyone got in one boat of sin,
- 2:43so through Jesus all of humanity can be saved as they place their
- 2:50faith and trust in Him. So then chapters 6 and seven
- 2:55talk about the practical outworking of that within
- 2:58people's lives because some people thought, oh, OK, Jesus
- 3:01saved us. He redeemed us from our sin.
- 3:04So should we just like keep on sinning because then there's
- 3:07like more grace and more forgiveness and so there's
- 3:10there's no downside to the sinning.
- 3:11And Paul goes, absolutely not. We have been made dead to sin.
- 3:15That is the old way of living, not your new way of living.
- 3:19He says that's actually where we read the verse for the wages of
- 3:23sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through
- 3:25Jesus Christ our Lord. Don't live in sin, which leads
- 3:28to death. Live in Jesus, which results in
- 3:31eternal life. But Romans Chapter 7, Paul goes
- 3:34through and he's like, man, we all fail at this.
- 3:38And he said, I fail at this, that what I want to do, I don't
- 3:43do what I don't want to do. That's what I end up doing.
- 3:45It was who in the world can rescue me from this body of
- 3:50death? And this is what we read in
- 3:52Romans chapter 8 and verse #1 He says, therefore there is now no
- 3:57condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, because the law of
- 4:03the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the
- 4:08law of sin and death. I'm going to read those verses.
- 4:13It's verses one and two one more time.
- 4:15Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those in Christ
- 4:20Jesus, because the law of the Spirit of life in Christ has set
- 4:25you free from the law of sin and death.
- 4:30What a joy, what a comfort when he says there's now no
- 4:34condemnation. He is not saying this just in
- 4:39our ultimate state, which is wonderfully true.
- 4:43That is Christ proclaimed on the cross.
- 4:45It is finished to Telestai. The debt is paid.
- 4:49There is no more payment for sin that is needed.
- 4:54God didn't say, all right, Jesus took 99.99% of the punishment
- 4:58for sin and you listening or watching to Tabernacle talk, you
- 5:03have to make up that last O point O 1%.
- 5:07If that was the case, we might be like, wow, well, that was a
- 5:11lot that Jesus did for me. And so I, I am grateful for
- 5:14that. No, when it comes to our eternal
- 5:17state, to be absent from the body is to be present with the
- 5:21Lord or as Jesus said, He is going to prepare a place for us
- 5:25so that where he is, there we may be also.
- 5:29What a joy. There is eternally no
- 5:31condemnation for those in Christ Jesus.
- 5:34If you believe in Jesus as your Lord and Savior, He is, if you
- 5:38will, the King of your life, that you have pledged your
- 5:41loyalty, your allegiance to King Jesus.
- 5:44You're not worshipping other gods.
- 5:46You aren't on a journey of self determination of I decide my
- 5:50life, I decide right and wrong, I decide what I'm going to do or
- 5:54not do in regards to even morality.
- 5:57And if you say Jesus is the one that I worship, that I follow,
- 6:01that I praise, that I serve, that I love Jesus, those in
- 6:07Christ Jesus are those who have no condemnation eternally.
- 6:11You will never have to wonder about what your eternal
- 6:15destination is if you have put your faith in Christ as Jesus
- 6:20tells us in John 6 and in John 10.
- 6:23Those that have believed in him truthfully putting, I like using
- 6:29the illustration, you turn the keys of your life over to him,
- 6:32you're still in the vehicle. It is if you will quote UN
- 6:36quote, your vehicle, but Jesus is the one that's doing the
- 6:39driving. He's the one that is dictating
- 6:42those decisions and he's the one with his hands on the steering
- 6:45wheel. As we have handed the keys of
- 6:48our life over to Jesus. Scripture says that we are in
- 6:53Jesus's hand. Jesus is in God the Father's
- 6:56hand, and no one is able to pluck us out of God the Father's
- 7:01hand. They would have to go through
- 7:03both the Incarnate Son of God and God the Father in order to
- 7:08RIP you away. And as we heard in a few
- 7:11Ephesians chapter one among the other portions of Scripture, the
- 7:15Holy Spirit lives inside of us, so we have God living within us.
- 7:20We have, as in First Corinthians 12, been placed into the body of
- 7:23Christ. And God the Father is the one
- 7:25that planned all of this and ultimately protects us and if
- 7:29you will, keeps us saved unto that day where we are glorified
- 7:35and made like who we were always intended to be prior to sin
- 7:43entering the world. So what a joy that no one is
- 7:47more powerful than God. You are not more powerful than
- 7:49God. The circumstances of life or
- 7:51Satan himself are not more powerful than God.
- 7:53So to those that have placed their faith in Christ Jesus for
- 7:56their salvation that He is their Lord, there is no eternal
- 8:00condemnation. But there was also no
- 8:02condemnation from your God in the day today as you fall as as
- 8:08you fail, as you want to do good and you don't follow through on
- 8:12it, as you don't want to do sin or evil and you do fall into
- 8:17those traps again and again. Paul here says there is no
- 8:22condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.
- 8:25Why would this be? How can we be these Romans 7
- 8:29believers that want to do good and fail and don't want to do
- 8:33evil and yet keep doing it? How can we have no condemnation?
- 8:37He says. Because the law of the Spirit of
- 8:39life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and
- 8:44death, that it's no longer the game of avoiding sin so that you
- 8:53can be right with God. Or if you did sin, you have to
- 8:56make a sacrifice so that God will forgive you and therefore
- 9:01your slate can be wiped clean for a time again.
- 9:04Instead, as Jesus took the punishment for all sin on
- 9:07himself, there is literally no more punishment left to give,
- 9:12left to give you. Any animosity that our God has
- 9:18towards sin has been met out on Jesus in full.
- 9:23He bore the full wrath, the just wrath of God on sin in His own
- 9:29body on the tree, so that we being made dead to sin, might
- 9:33live in Him. What a joy.
- 9:36Now, as with Roman 60, does that mean I can just send all the
- 9:39time? No, don't do that in Jesus is
- 9:42life. Following His path means that
- 9:45there is joy and even when we do sin, sometimes God will put us
- 9:51back on the right path. He will correct us, He will
- 9:55chasten us, He'll discipline us. But it is never punishment or
- 10:01condemnation where God says if you will very literally damn you
- 10:05to hell, that it will never occur from the mouth of God.
- 10:10For those that have placed their faith in Christ Jesus.
- 10:12Instead, when God looks at us, we are His children, His
- 10:17children those and ones has adopted.
- 10:19And So what he wants for our life is not to hurt you when you
- 10:22make bad decisions. He wants to put you back on the
- 10:25right path so that you choose the Jesus way freely,
- 10:29volitionally. And so sometimes that means that
- 10:31will we will encounter hardships in our life, but they are
- 10:34intended to point us to Jesus and to his way, not to our own
- 10:40way. This is such a life giving
- 10:44verse. This was something that even
- 10:45growing up as I struggled with sin and I went man, I just feel
- 10:49like God is always angry with me.
- 10:51How could he not be? I'm always angry with me and my
- 10:54failures and this verse that this is the living word of God
- 11:01speaking to my soul and to your soul, that there is therefore
- 11:04now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.
- 11:09You are loved, you are forgiven, you are accepted in the beloved
- 11:131 You are declared holy and righteous and justified through
- 11:19the finished work of Christ. And yes, we're still a work in
- 11:22progress and yes, we fail one another and we fail our God in
- 11:28what we do, but He does not look at us as the guilty.
- 11:33He looks on us as his children. And because of his love for us,
- 11:36sometimes he'll draw us back into relationship with himself.
- 11:40And that might mean we give up some things that we have been
- 11:43holding on to, but that does not mean that God is condemning you.
- 11:47It, if you will let me try to make it really practical.
- 11:50When you are going through that divorce and your spouse no
- 11:55longer wants to be with you, it is not God punishing you or
- 11:58hitting you or condemning you. God might be releasing some
- 12:04things in your life so that you would put your focus and
- 12:08attention on him instead of another person.
- 12:12It could be that you lose your job and it is not God punishing
- 12:16you for not always being perfect or being short with people or
- 12:21failing in some way in your thought life, or whatever sins
- 12:24you might be struggling with. It could simply be that God
- 12:28wants you, your attention drawn back to Him, that He is the
- 12:31provider of everything that you need, and that as you cry out to
- 12:36Him in faith, you find over and over again that He is faithful,
- 12:40that He takes care of his own. They're just 1000 circumstances
- 12:45in life where you could think, I I bet God is really angry with
- 12:49me my friend. There is therefore now no
- 12:53condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.
- 12:56For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set us
- 13:01free from the law of sin and death.
- 13:04I'm no longer a slave to fear or to sin.
- 13:08I am now a child of God. I hope that this verse has been
- 13:14an encouragement to you as it's been to me.
- 13:16Looking forward to next episode and going over a couple more of
- 13:21some of my favorite verses or favorite passages in all of
- 13:24scripture.
