Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to the Overlain Journal podcast. I'm your
- 0:08Speaker 1: host Matt Scott, with my good buddies Scott Brady co
- 0:12Speaker 1: host and Brian dors here. There's actually not two people
- 0:15Speaker 1: that I talked to more in the world than these two,
- 0:18Speaker 1: so this should be a good one. Today we are
- 0:21Speaker 1: talking about choosing your I guess home on wheels for overlanding,
- 0:25Speaker 1: so we're going to be talking about truck campers, expedition vehicles, vans, trailers,
- 0:30Speaker 1: basically everything that you can live inside. We have Brian
- 0:33Speaker 1: here with us who's kind of done all of these
- 0:36Speaker 1: different things, and we're really excited to have you here.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Yeah, Yeah, let's do it.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Yeah, thanks for being on the podcast. Brian. I've known
- 0:43Speaker 3: you a long time and I remember you know, you
- 0:47Speaker 3: started off with a van, you moved on to a
- 0:50Speaker 3: custom camper that you helped design and bring to market.
- 0:54Speaker 3: You know, you've had vehicles that you built out with
- 0:57Speaker 3: roof tents. You've kind of done the whole spectrum.
- 1:01Speaker 2: So never a roof to nedof tent. A BNTH in Mexico,
- 1:07Speaker 2: but it wasn't mine and I've never had one on
- 1:09Speaker 2: any of my vehicle. Just want to keep that record sto.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Okay, that's good to.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Know Brian Dort doesn't like roof tents.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean.
- 1:19Speaker 1: You didn't deny it.
- 1:20Speaker 2: I didn't.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Maybe we start off with kind of the truck camper.
- 1:24Speaker 3: It's it's the more common, you know.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it's also a little underrated. Like I
- 1:29Speaker 1: think the van thing has kind of taken everybody by storm,
- 1:34Speaker 1: so to speak. But the truck campers are really like
- 1:37Speaker 1: they're really convenient. Like you still get like a vehicle
- 1:41Speaker 1: that you can use on a day to day basis,
- 1:43Speaker 1: runn into town, you know, move your friend's couch, and
- 1:47Speaker 1: then you put the camper in the back. Like you've
- 1:49Speaker 1: got the Scout. Which scout do you have?
- 1:51Speaker 3: It's the Yoho pop up and I've I had a
- 1:53Speaker 3: full size Scout as well.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Oh yeah, in your GMC.
- 1:57Speaker 3: On the GMC, I like have a pickup like for
- 2:01Speaker 3: North America travel. I prefer a pickup because I use
- 2:04Speaker 3: a pickup every day here in Prescott, and the truck
- 2:07Speaker 3: camper allows me to take it off in about fifteen minutes.
- 2:10Speaker 3: It's really easy to take on and off if I've
- 2:14Speaker 3: got someone helping me out. So that's what I like
- 2:17Speaker 3: about it is the fact that, especially if you start
- 2:19Speaker 3: off with a full size one ton or three quarter
- 2:22Speaker 3: ton truck, you got plenty of payload. Yeah, you can
- 2:25Speaker 3: get a lot more capability than you can get out
- 2:27Speaker 3: of a sprinter van for example. So you can have
- 2:30Speaker 3: a much more capable platform. And then it's kind of
- 2:34Speaker 3: a jack of all trades. I can take the camper
- 2:36Speaker 3: off the back and haul my motorcycle.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:39Speaker 1: And also just talking about the base vehicle, like, I
- 2:41Speaker 1: don't think that there is a vehicle for sale in
- 2:44Speaker 1: North America that is more refined than the pickup truck. Like,
- 2:47Speaker 1: this is the land of the pickup truck. Like, it
- 2:50Speaker 1: is the most competitive segment for the Big Three. Yeah,
- 2:53Speaker 1: it is the money maker for the Big Three. It
- 2:55Speaker 1: is the thing that they have the most you know,
- 2:59Speaker 1: and n and reasoning to put the engineering behind. They're
- 3:03Speaker 1: generally very reliable. They have to be. I mean, people
- 3:06Speaker 1: rely on these things. You know, a lot of businesses
- 3:10Speaker 1: do work, right, I mean, yeah, there's like the nice
- 3:12Speaker 1: version of these things, the lariats, the king ranches, all
- 3:15Speaker 1: of that kind of stuff. But you know, America is
- 3:17Speaker 1: built off the back of a pickup truck. And I
- 3:19Speaker 1: think man for North America like it's a it's a
- 3:24Speaker 1: really underrated thing. Like I've been looking at these four
- 3:26Speaker 1: wheel campers has been a thing I always like to
- 3:31Speaker 1: stress how much more affordable a lot of these options
- 3:34Speaker 1: can be when you look used and four wheel campers now,
- 3:37Speaker 1: like a fifteen thousand dollars budget for a four wheel camper,
- 3:41Speaker 1: like you can healthily get you know it's going to
- 3:44Speaker 1: be ten years old. But you know, you don't ever
- 3:46Speaker 1: want to buy anything that was advertised by somebody with
- 3:49Speaker 1: I lived on the road with this, because there's like
- 3:51Speaker 1: eight million ones that Saturday the garage somewhere. Sure it
- 3:55Speaker 1: never got used yet by one of those, you know.
- 3:58Speaker 1: But by the time you buy the tent that Brian hates,
- 4:01Speaker 1: the roof rack that you have to put on top
- 4:02Speaker 1: of it, the fridge, everything to build out your setup,
- 4:06Speaker 1: a lot of that just comes in a in a
- 4:08Speaker 1: four wheel camper. You use it, you do whatever you want,
- 4:12Speaker 1: and you sell it and I don't know, you probably
- 4:15Speaker 1: aren't going to lose much money on it.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Slide and truck campers have been around for a long
- 4:17Speaker 2: time and they create a massive amount of advantages. The
- 4:20Speaker 2: big one being you can have a truck and you
- 4:22Speaker 2: can have a expedition vehicle really quick, and you can
- 4:26Speaker 2: switch it, like you're saying, fifteen minutes, just swap it out.
- 4:29Speaker 2: It allows you to both. I think we were talking
- 4:31Speaker 2: about a van. A van is a little less so
- 4:32Speaker 2: when they're built out, it's kind of a van you
- 4:35Speaker 2: live in, right. Some of them are more configurable than others.
- 4:38Speaker 2: But with the truck camper, you have that base truck.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Most of the trucks in the US market are kind
- 4:42Speaker 2: of meant for industrial or doing work, and then they're
- 4:46Speaker 2: tarted up to make it for the consumer with all
- 4:49Speaker 2: the fancy electronics and big screens and all the things.
- 4:52Speaker 2: And that's the stuff that goes wrong with them. The
- 4:54Speaker 2: drive trains and the rest of the trucks generally hold
- 4:57Speaker 2: up really well all the way across the board.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Do you how do I say this?
- 5:05Speaker 1: I completely lost my train.
- 5:06Speaker 3: I thought, what did you put in your liquid death?
- 5:11Speaker 1: I didn't put anything in my life death.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, we don't want to go down the
- 5:16Speaker 2: rabbit hole here as a witch truck to buy it,
- 5:17Speaker 2: because I've owned one of at least each. I know
- 5:20Speaker 2: both of you have had a variety of pickup trucks
- 5:22Speaker 2: as well, and they all have their pros and cons totally.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Well, this is an area we agree on. Like, I
- 5:28Speaker 1: really like the RAM stuff. They have ample payload. I
- 5:31Speaker 1: think they're probably the best performers off road. Solid axles
- 5:34Speaker 1: front and rear, coil sprung front rear, availability of leaves,
- 5:38Speaker 1: Like you have a thirty five hundred, Yeah, I have
- 5:39Speaker 1: a twenty five hundred, but you have a quarter master.
- 5:42Speaker 3: The new power wagon diesel too. I mean it's like
- 5:46Speaker 3: dual lockers on a full sized truck.
- 5:48Speaker 1: And if you want to go international with these things,
- 5:51Speaker 1: they have now fantastic you know, petrol gas versions they
- 5:55Speaker 1: do of the vehicle and they're cheaper and they often
- 5:57Speaker 1: have more payload as well because the engines are con
- 6:00Speaker 1: literably lighter the diesels in these big trucks. You know,
- 6:05Speaker 1: with the SCR and DPF systems, they do get a
- 6:08Speaker 1: little uh touchy in certain environments.
- 6:12Speaker 3: Oh yeah, for sure.
- 6:12Speaker 1: If you're just in Europe and you're running on you know,
- 6:14Speaker 1: European ultra low self or diesel, you find but you know,
- 6:18Speaker 1: Bolivian diesel is not going to agree with your DPF.
- 6:21Speaker 2: I mean, you definitely have to have the vehicle for
- 6:23Speaker 2: the environment that you're going to go do. There's in
- 6:25Speaker 2: my opinion, there's very few vehicles that are really true
- 6:27Speaker 2: worldwide overland vehicles. Like we were talking about, we both
- 6:31Speaker 2: have diesel rams here in the US. It's perfectly fine.
- 6:34Speaker 2: It's North America in general, like that truck will just
- 6:37Speaker 2: do the job. Sure Mexico these days, like.
- 6:39Speaker 3: It's really totally big deal, totally.
- 6:42Speaker 2: It does everything I needed to do for the adventures
- 6:44Speaker 2: I have planned here in North America.
- 6:47Speaker 3: So this was interesting. There was that trip that just
- 6:50Speaker 3: went down West Africa where they tried to beat the
- 6:53Speaker 3: beat the record of of doing the West coast of Africa,
- 6:57Speaker 3: and they they have Ultralo Soul for diesel grenadiers and
- 7:03Speaker 3: all they needed was one thousand kilometers of range, and
- 7:08Speaker 3: they made it all the way down going from big
- 7:10Speaker 3: city to big city. Because you figure in the cities
- 7:14Speaker 3: all the bureaucrats they want the new Beamers and they
- 7:16Speaker 3: want the new Mercedes or whatever that's got the ultra
- 7:20Speaker 3: Lo soul for diesel. So if you're remote, even in
- 7:23Speaker 3: West Africa, you have a problem. But as soon as
- 7:26Speaker 3: you can get into a bigger city, you can get
- 7:27Speaker 3: ultra Lo sol for diesel, so it's less of an
- 7:31Speaker 3: issue like Sudan still a problem. Bolivia is still a problem,
- 7:34Speaker 3: but it's becoming less and less common.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think it's important to focus on this,
- 7:38Speaker 1: I guess at the start of the podcast because all
- 7:41Speaker 1: of the subsequent vehicles that we're talking about, this does
- 7:44Speaker 1: apply to we're going to kind of transition to expedition
- 7:47Speaker 1: vehicles and vans and well, what are you towing a
- 7:49Speaker 1: trailer with? Most likely a truck, you know, for people
- 7:54Speaker 1: that are listening in, you know, in North America even overseas,
- 7:58Speaker 1: I think you have a high luxorthing that you want
- 8:00Speaker 1: to te with. But I mean, what's your what's your
- 8:03Speaker 1: favorite truck camper that's on the market right now.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Bryan favorite truck camper?
- 8:07Speaker 1: So like slide in or slide in slide or flatbed?
- 8:11Speaker 2: Yeah, man, that's tough. I mean flatbeds opens it up
- 8:13Speaker 2: a little bit. The Ata Terra's really rad for they
- 8:17Speaker 2: have both, but the flatbed specifically with the amount of
- 8:20Speaker 2: volume that has a layout. I really like. The Scout
- 8:24Speaker 2: stuff is really good. I mean it's built well, it's
- 8:26Speaker 2: a good price point. I think they're really configurable, I think,
- 8:29Speaker 2: which is a great point of those Man, did you
- 8:32Speaker 2: look to those super tramps. That's I was just going
- 8:34Speaker 2: to say a super tramp. So I have experienced one
- 8:36Speaker 2: of those for a long weekend. Amazing campers, Like they're
- 8:39Speaker 2: really well built.
- 8:40Speaker 3: And huge inside. I was shocked by the space, the
- 8:44Speaker 3: space efficiency of it. They did a good job of
- 8:46Speaker 3: like not adding too much junk inside that made it
- 8:49Speaker 3: feel small.
- 8:50Speaker 2: And the material choices and everything in those are really
- 8:53Speaker 2: really good. Some of the cabinets are metal, and I
- 8:56Speaker 2: don't know if I love that choice in some ways,
- 8:58Speaker 2: they're like a little loud on them, on them, and
- 9:01Speaker 2: the touch, like the feel of it wasn't as good
- 9:04Speaker 2: as maybe composites or some other thing or would on
- 9:06Speaker 2: the inside. But everything else about that camper I really liked.
- 9:09Speaker 3: And then there's a Canadian one with that Overland Explorer vehicles.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Oh yeah, those seem to be like just I'm not gonna,
- 9:18Speaker 1: you know, poop poo a four wheel camper, but they
- 9:20Speaker 1: seem to be like a better four wheel camper. They're
- 9:22Speaker 1: considerably more expensive than camp They're very expensive. They're very
- 9:26Speaker 1: well insulated.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Four season is better on those than a lot of others.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Yeah, Like I think if you were if you were
- 9:32Speaker 1: going to be doing some cold weather travel those and
- 9:36Speaker 1: like the super tramp look really fascinating to me.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I think for that real serious international stuff, that
- 9:44Speaker 3: seems to be one of the better. Right, That's what
- 9:46Speaker 3: Richard and Nashley have And they've had trip right now
- 9:48Speaker 3: and I've I've grilled them on it because we need
- 9:52Speaker 3: to know, like we need to be able to express
- 9:53Speaker 3: like how are they And they're like, We've had no
- 9:55Speaker 3: troubles with this thing.
- 9:56Speaker 1: I've been talking to my wife Laura about a truck
- 10:00Speaker 1: camper for a future trip maybe the stands and I
- 10:04Speaker 1: think the biggest thing she has against and I'm going
- 10:07Speaker 1: to say myself, is they're just not sexy, like like
- 10:11Speaker 1: I mean, not that it necessarily matters, right, of course it.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Does, but it does like you look back at your
- 10:16Speaker 2: vehicle and go, oh, that's what's mine. That's cool.
- 10:18Speaker 1: And it's like when I look back at like a
- 10:20Speaker 1: you know what I should buy is I should just
- 10:23Speaker 1: get a four wheel camper and throw it on the
- 10:24Speaker 1: back and go because you know, you land back in
- 10:29Speaker 1: the US and you could sell it within twenty four
- 10:31Speaker 1: hours in whatever port city you land. It is right
- 10:33Speaker 1: if you didn't want to keep it like they're very
- 10:36Speaker 1: I don't want to say disposable as in the transactional transactional, right,
- 10:39Speaker 1: I just just just move on with it. But the
- 10:44Speaker 1: super Tramp is the only one that I've seen where
- 10:47Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, that looks good. They do some color matching,
- 10:50Speaker 1: they have some interesting.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Colors, automotive quality finishes.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Yeah, they're built really well to have been in that
- 10:56Speaker 2: factory as well, and they're really interesting the way they
- 10:58Speaker 2: do it, and they seem to be really on it
- 11:00Speaker 2: right and doing process improvement all the time and that
- 11:03Speaker 2: kind of thing, and not all manufacturers are doing that. Obviously.
- 11:06Speaker 3: They're a neat small family run business and they really care.
- 11:10Speaker 1: As a as a company, I do want to shout
- 11:12Speaker 1: out Super Tramp like they are. You know, they just
- 11:14Speaker 1: came out with an ex vision vehicle that's like on
- 11:16Speaker 1: an F three fifty, which I think is it's what
- 11:18Speaker 1: everybody's been asking for, but just I think margins and
- 11:22Speaker 1: price point, no one's really been able to deliver.
- 11:25Speaker 2: You know.
- 11:25Speaker 1: I wish these guys the best, Like they're doing some
- 11:27Speaker 1: really really cool stuff and I think I think more
- 11:30Speaker 1: people should pay attention an interesting go on.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Sorry, yeah, I think going back to your sexy comment
- 11:35Speaker 2: about making it look sexy. I think there's kind of
- 11:37Speaker 2: two ways to do that with a truck camper. One
- 11:39Speaker 2: is to the way not to do it is add
- 11:43Speaker 2: every accessory known demand, hanging off the sides and everywhere else.
- 11:46Speaker 2: I think it's way it's too easy to do right.
- 11:48Speaker 2: But also matching the camper with the truck not necessarily color.
- 11:52Speaker 2: I mean, that's cool, but a lot of campers just
- 11:55Speaker 2: don't look right on certain trucks, Like they have to
- 11:57Speaker 2: fit right on the truck, be the right height above
- 12:01Speaker 2: the bed rails as well as the right height over
- 12:04Speaker 2: the cab. So it's still all functions and you're not
- 12:06Speaker 2: getting rubbing, but it looks right. Some of them you're
- 12:09Speaker 2: like that camper doesn't belong with that truck.
- 12:11Speaker 1: And like prospectors get really weird. Like there's certain flatbeds,
- 12:16Speaker 1: like I mean, i'll just say it, like the Pea
- 12:19Speaker 1: Core flatbed. When you put a four wheel camper on
- 12:22Speaker 1: the back, there's like three feet it's exaggerating, but it's
- 12:25Speaker 1: it's it's funny. You know, there's a lot that you
- 12:27Speaker 1: can do with that space. But I do get your point.
- 12:30Speaker 1: I mean, that would be a great setup, right, it
- 12:32Speaker 1: like go down the road like a you.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Know, bad a good equipment. But that's the other angle
- 12:37Speaker 2: that I say to make it sexy is do the flatbed. Yeah,
- 12:39Speaker 2: not all flatbeds are created equal, obviously, but do it
- 12:43Speaker 2: a proper flatbed that gets your center gravity low and
- 12:46Speaker 2: gets that fit properly on whatever platform you're doing. So
- 12:49Speaker 2: the cab over.
- 12:50Speaker 1: There's definitely flatbeds meant for campers, and there's flatbeds meant
- 12:55Speaker 1: to be sure flatbeds they're optimized for angle. Yeah, that's
- 12:59Speaker 1: a good departure and things like that. It's really easy
- 13:02Speaker 1: to get over payload with those flatbeds because they.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Give you a lot more storage. So people tend to
- 13:08Speaker 3: just like you know, fill up the available space. I
- 13:12Speaker 3: would say, like from my perspective, since I am a
- 13:15Speaker 3: truck camper owner, Like for me, I just like the
- 13:18Speaker 3: fact that it's I can reconfigure the vehicle very quickly.
- 13:23Speaker 3: The cost of entry is fairly low, Like even a
- 13:25Speaker 3: really nice keen eye Scout is about thirty eight thousand bucks. Yeah,
- 13:30Speaker 3: So whereas you can get super tramps get up into
- 13:35Speaker 3: the fifties and sixties, four whel campers, you can find
- 13:38Speaker 3: used in the ten to fifteen range. You know, four
- 13:42Speaker 3: wal campers also need to be you know, part of
- 13:45Speaker 3: the discussion because they've been doing it a very long time.
- 13:49Speaker 3: They're a great price point made in the United States.
- 13:53Speaker 3: They just have only recently been really updating stuff. So
- 13:57Speaker 3: like they have their new camp out which has more
- 14:00Speaker 3: of a smooth sided finish, so it looks a little
- 14:03Speaker 3: more modern. It's a lot more configurable on the inside.
- 14:07Speaker 3: But they've got a bunch of different options so you
- 14:09Speaker 3: can even get them just as a shell, which you know,
- 14:11Speaker 3: I've always thought was cool.
- 14:13Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, And it is worth noting kind of the
- 14:16Speaker 1: wedge camper thing, but we're not we're not really talking
- 14:19Speaker 1: about that. I think the wedge camper is a great
- 14:21Speaker 1: roof tent alternative. My problem with them having built one
- 14:27Speaker 1: is you end up spending truck camper money to arguably
- 14:32Speaker 1: have less. Like maybe there's a little bit of a
- 14:34Speaker 1: weight savings, but sure there's a weight, but then you
- 14:37Speaker 1: know you're doing you still do the battery systems, and
- 14:39Speaker 1: you're still trying to find a way to mount all
- 14:41Speaker 1: of this stuff, and then you can't take it out.
- 14:44Speaker 1: You know, you can, you can easily spend you know,
- 14:48Speaker 1: seven to fifteen thousand dollars in the wedge camper and
- 14:52Speaker 1: you don't have anything inside of your truck yet.
- 14:54Speaker 2: I think you can easily make a wedge camper into
- 14:57Speaker 2: a truck camper essentially and spend similar But I think
- 15:01Speaker 2: a wedge camper that benefit is you can do it
- 15:03Speaker 2: the other way and do a backpacker setup essentially inside
- 15:07Speaker 2: at whatever comfort level you want and really configure it
- 15:10Speaker 2: and keep it light and nimble and smaller footprint and
- 15:13Speaker 2: shorter height and all those things that allow it to
- 15:15Speaker 2: be a more trail ready vehicle. Yeah, they really loaded
- 15:19Speaker 2: down truck camper, like start getting in a situation, especially
- 15:21Speaker 2: in the East Coast, to really fit down trails.
- 15:24Speaker 1: It gets definitely.
- 15:25Speaker 3: Yeah, don't don't make things something that they're not. Yeah,
- 15:28Speaker 3: if it's a wedge camper, keep it as a wedge camper,
- 15:31Speaker 3: don't there simple don't try to make it into a
- 15:33Speaker 3: truck camper. If you want a truck camper, buy a
- 15:35Speaker 3: truck camper.
- 15:36Speaker 2: I'd argue, though, there's again it's it's use case. So
- 15:39Speaker 2: if you want a small, nimble vehicle that's super capable
- 15:42Speaker 2: off road, and that's your goal is to go to
- 15:43Speaker 2: those really hard places, and say you're solo traveling or
- 15:46Speaker 2: a couple, a wedge camper with a proper low center gravity, batteries, water,
- 15:51Speaker 2: all the things in the bed at the same price
- 15:53Speaker 2: point is maybe a better option than a truck camper,
- 15:56Speaker 2: as long as you, as a couple or your traveling
- 15:58Speaker 2: partners are okay with losing some of the luxuries you
- 16:01Speaker 2: might get in a truck camp or the space to
- 16:03Speaker 2: stretch out, the nicer toilet that's separate from the sleeping
- 16:07Speaker 2: area of that kind of thing.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, to transition a little bit into our
- 16:12Speaker 1: next thing. Those in duro campers where they actually replace
- 16:18Speaker 1: like the whole bed there is no flatbed. Those are
- 16:21Speaker 1: really interesting. They're I think they're about they're a little
- 16:23Speaker 1: over one hundred grand, but I see those on like
- 16:27Speaker 1: you know, ram chassis and those look super cool.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure.
- 16:32Speaker 3: That's interesting though, because if it's one hundred grand and
- 16:35Speaker 3: you're forty grand into a used truck, like lightly used truck,
- 16:40Speaker 3: fifty grand into a.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Light set definitely like a van alternative. Yeah, that's interesting.
- 16:44Speaker 1: You know, they're they're nicely finished inside, their they're pop tops.
- 16:49Speaker 1: They just like aesthetically they kind of match the vehicle.
- 16:53Speaker 1: I think that those are those are definitely worth, you know,
- 16:56Speaker 1: a look, like if you're not quite if you want
- 16:58Speaker 1: a little bit more than a truck camp, but you're
- 17:01Speaker 1: not quite in like the expedition vehicle, you know, segment,
- 17:05Speaker 1: because they just the price just skyrockets from there, right,
- 17:09Speaker 1: I mean the next thing's where we talk about they go,
- 17:11Speaker 1: you know, a million dollars is not like an unusual
- 17:14Speaker 1: figure to hear for some of them. Those are definitely
- 17:18Speaker 1: worth a look, and people travel in them, Like I
- 17:20Speaker 1: see there's a couple couples that I follow and and
- 17:24Speaker 1: they're beating the crap out of those things, and they.
- 17:26Speaker 3: Do you guys, think it's worth any of these options
- 17:30Speaker 3: if it doesn't have some of those luxuries, Like in
- 17:33Speaker 3: my mind, like why spend so much money and have
- 17:36Speaker 3: so much weight? If it doesn't have a shower, if
- 17:39Speaker 3: it doesn't have a toilet, if it doesn't have like
- 17:42Speaker 3: I'd be curious what you guys think, Like I think
- 17:44Speaker 3: I've seen some very expensive, very complex builds. Yeah, and
- 17:48Speaker 3: they still got to go poop in the woods, Like
- 17:51Speaker 3: does it make sense to you guys to have.
- 17:54Speaker 1: I think a lot of influencers prioritize like these big
- 17:57Speaker 1: dumb electrical systems that are insanely applicated over everything because
- 18:01Speaker 1: they get free stuff from companies and you don't need it.
- 18:05Speaker 1: Like like the twelve hundred amp hours of battery in
- 18:07Speaker 1: the back of a wedge camper is useless if you're
- 18:11Speaker 1: in a you know, at a Guatemalan truck stop and
- 18:14Speaker 1: your wife still has to use that toilet. Yeah, I
- 18:17Speaker 1: think you do have to prioritize some of the liveability,
- 18:21Speaker 1: because I think that's really what you're getting, like you're saying.
- 18:23Speaker 3: Mike, Yeah, I wouldn't even like, even in my that
- 18:26Speaker 3: tiny little scout, I have a way to take a shower,
- 18:29Speaker 3: and I have a composting toilet in there, Like I
- 18:32Speaker 3: have a way to air condition it, I have a
- 18:34Speaker 3: way to heat it.
- 18:35Speaker 1: I don't know if showers are like as essential because
- 18:37Speaker 1: then you have to have like a lot of water,
- 18:41Speaker 1: you know, you can kind of clean your pits and
- 18:43Speaker 1: your bits. Yeah, in the privacy of the space, I
- 18:47Speaker 1: think essential.
- 18:48Speaker 2: So someone that lived in a truck camper and built
- 18:50Speaker 2: a custom truck camper for exhibition truck like thing truck camper.
- 18:54Speaker 2: For a long time, I didn't have a shower. I
- 18:57Speaker 2: had outside shower yet, and I didn't have huge volume
- 19:01Speaker 2: of water capacity. I think I had thirty gallons or something,
- 19:03Speaker 2: it wasn't which is enough to live on. But again,
- 19:07Speaker 2: it just depends on where, like who you're traveling with,
- 19:10Speaker 2: and what your threshold is for luxury, what what you need,
- 19:15Speaker 2: Like I definitely even today, like a hot shower that
- 19:18Speaker 2: you can just stand under for a long period of
- 19:19Speaker 2: time is a huge luxury, Like that's so amazing. That
- 19:23Speaker 2: and Wi Fi were the two things I always said
- 19:25Speaker 2: when I lived on the road full time that like
- 19:27Speaker 2: are the ultimate luxuries. They just always so. Now now
- 19:30Speaker 2: it doesn't matter, we all have Startlink. It just is
- 19:32Speaker 2: what it is. It's the only player in that space
- 19:35Speaker 2: right now. But yeah, I mean I spent a lot
- 19:37Speaker 2: of money on that build and it had a cartridge
- 19:40Speaker 2: toilet and yeah, it just I made a space for
- 19:42Speaker 2: that and planned that into the build. I think it's
- 19:45Speaker 2: really key to have a toilet in the in the
- 19:49Speaker 2: ring like it, like, especially if you're going full time
- 19:52Speaker 2: and we're sampling lots of food from all over the world,
- 19:55Speaker 2: like you're gonna get sick, You're.
- 19:57Speaker 3: Gonna get and you're gonna be so glad you have it.
- 20:00Speaker 3: And also we have a responsibility as travelers if we
- 20:03Speaker 3: can reduce our impact, if we can, if there can
- 20:06Speaker 3: be one less cat hole that we dig outside of Moab.
- 20:09Speaker 3: I think that that's because there's a.
- 20:11Speaker 1: Lot of people that go through these places, Like you know,
- 20:14Speaker 1: New Zealand has the self contained certification for camper vans,
- 20:18Speaker 1: Like in a lot of places they have to have
- 20:20Speaker 1: this self contained certification because you just think the volume
- 20:23Speaker 1: three hundred and sixty five days a year, somebody's camping
- 20:25Speaker 1: in that spot. Now normally maybe you can't tell that.
- 20:29Speaker 1: And that's good because it's been it's been you know,
- 20:32Speaker 1: good land stewardship. But I think there's a people need
- 20:36Speaker 1: to probably start packing out to Pooh Yeah for sure.
- 20:40Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's super simple now they got great Like
- 20:42Speaker 3: I use this little Trellino toilet that's like it's super
- 20:45Speaker 3: tiny and it fits in the scout. And then there's
- 20:50Speaker 3: a wonderful is the name of the company that makes
- 20:52Speaker 3: the shower. It's a it's like a little foldable shower
- 20:55Speaker 3: pan and a curtain that hangs from the roof. Yeah,
- 20:59Speaker 3: and I have a name O shower that I put
- 21:01Speaker 3: some hot water in and it's like it's a surprising
- 21:04Speaker 3: luxury to Like.
- 21:05Speaker 1: Rin Oostike from Okay four Wheel Drive loves those wrap
- 21:09Speaker 1: on toilets, swears by them. He has one in his
- 21:12Speaker 1: new Grenadier pop top build. They're really nice. Those look
- 21:15Speaker 1: really cool. They're really nice there because you can just
- 21:17Speaker 1: throw it in the garbage.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, they're very expensive. They seal each use in
- 21:22Speaker 2: a single seal package, which is great because you have
- 21:24Speaker 2: no smells at all, which is amazing. But each like
- 21:29Speaker 2: it's special plastic and you got to pay for that,
- 21:32Speaker 2: so you're buying it's a lot upfront and it's a
- 21:34Speaker 2: lot each use. Is the only problem with those. Otherwise
- 21:37Speaker 2: they are awesome, really good. The other thing I do
- 21:39Speaker 2: the similar is I always have a couple of wag
- 21:42Speaker 2: bags around, Like I've done self support in the Grand
- 21:44Speaker 2: Canyon and stuff like that, and you literally have to
- 21:45Speaker 2: pack out your poop. So having a wag bag in
- 21:49Speaker 2: the glove box of the truck and in the back
- 21:52Speaker 2: door card of like in the cup holder on every
- 21:55Speaker 2: vehicle I've ever ye smart. I just have it because
- 21:57Speaker 2: you can always pack it out no matter how what
- 21:59Speaker 2: your acts is to a toilet, like am My Lexus
- 22:01Speaker 2: g X four sixty kind of overlandy rig. I could
- 22:03Speaker 2: sleep inside, but no toilet in it. But I had
- 22:05Speaker 2: those wag bags always handy, so you don't have to
- 22:07Speaker 2: dig a cattle, especially if you're sick or whatever. You
- 22:10Speaker 2: always have an option.
- 22:12Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think like moving into the exhibition vehicle stuff,
- 22:15Speaker 1: that's where those vehicles start to be a little bit
- 22:17Speaker 1: more fully featured. Oh yeah, you know, I mean, if
- 22:20Speaker 1: you don't have a bathroom, shower, sink, pretty considerable water storage,
- 22:25Speaker 1: you know, you're you're you're really starting to blend like
- 22:29Speaker 1: some of the moveability and a portability and maneuverability of
- 22:33Speaker 1: a truck camper with the benefits of like an RV.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Right they sit somewhere in the middle, you know, usually
- 22:40Speaker 1: higher quality than an RV. Usually usually that's that segment's
- 22:45Speaker 1: really expanding right now. I mean, as we sit here,
- 22:48Speaker 1: like a couple of days ago, win a bag, ye,
- 22:51Speaker 1: and I'm not gonna poop poo that acra arca r
- 22:55Speaker 1: rka aar ka. It looks interesting.
- 22:58Speaker 3: It's like you saw a lot of vans do.
- 23:01Speaker 1: And the thing with the revel is, you know, kind
- 23:04Speaker 1: of the van hipsters. Oh, at first, Oh, we don't.
- 23:06Speaker 1: We don't like it. We don't like it. But every
- 23:08Speaker 1: generation they just improved that vehicle. So it's interesting to see.
- 23:13Speaker 1: You know, I think Winnebago really is seems to balance
- 23:20Speaker 1: the needs of everyone quite well.
- 23:24Speaker 2: You know.
- 23:24Speaker 1: I mean there's always going to be the earth roamers,
- 23:26Speaker 1: the truckhouses, the Bliss mobiles, that kind of stuff. But
- 23:30Speaker 1: you know those they have these doors that open at
- 23:33Speaker 1: the back, so throwing mountain bikes or whatever in the back,
- 23:37Speaker 1: even if you're just storing the vehicle or parking.
- 23:39Speaker 2: Being smart about a few of the innovative features on
- 23:41Speaker 2: a new arcat for sure, the rear huge like kind
- 23:44Speaker 2: of ambulance doors or wherever they come off the back.
- 23:46Speaker 2: And then the dynet is huge and you can really
- 23:50Speaker 2: adjust that space. You can take out basically the whole
- 23:53Speaker 2: rear dnet area and that can be storage for motorcycles
- 23:56Speaker 2: by all that. Yeah, so that's pretty cool. I have
- 24:00Speaker 2: a couple of the things I'm not so yeah.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Like we were talking about that the bathroom is like
- 24:04Speaker 1: midship but it you know, it's kind of like the
- 24:09Speaker 1: earth cruisers were were Earth Cruiser when you walked in
- 24:12Speaker 1: the door, your entrance way was the shower, pants, and toilet,
- 24:16Speaker 1: which I think, Yeah, that's interesting.
- 24:19Speaker 3: Clever use of space that has to be there regardless
- 24:21Speaker 3: of mudroom, right right.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Yeah, they've put it in the entrance to the bed
- 24:25Speaker 1: and there's like a curtain that you slide to keep
- 24:28Speaker 1: your that's supposed to keep your sheets and everything from
- 24:31Speaker 1: getting wet. And then there's another curtain on the other
- 24:34Speaker 1: side and the toilet and.
- 24:37Speaker 2: It's sort of transparent comes to the back, which is
- 24:40Speaker 2: kind of hot.
- 24:41Speaker 1: Yeah, there's still a lot of money, you know when
- 24:44Speaker 1: you think of a revel which is going to effectively
- 24:47Speaker 1: about half the price of this thing that has an
- 24:51Speaker 1: enclosed toilet space, which I have to say, like like
- 24:56Speaker 1: I kind of want that, Like I think that I
- 24:59Speaker 1: hope they do well it, but I would just never
- 25:01Speaker 1: consider pull out toilet. I mean I saw when they
- 25:05Speaker 1: in their video as they like pushed it back in.
- 25:09Speaker 1: It's like wobbling on the on like the slider rails rails,
- 25:13Speaker 1: and I'm like, oh, man, like like there's.
- 25:16Speaker 2: Well, we'll give it to him. That was that's probably
- 25:18Speaker 2: a prototype and that's early. We haven't seen touch the
- 25:20Speaker 2: thing yet. We'll touch it over the next post.
- 25:22Speaker 3: Yeah, but isn't that that's the argument for the expedition camper.
- 25:28Speaker 3: I think I think there's two things that people look at.
- 25:31Speaker 3: They can buy an industrial chassis, so they some people
- 25:36Speaker 3: view that as a as a benefit, and then the
- 25:38Speaker 3: other the other benefit is that you're getting closer to
- 25:42Speaker 3: r V level comfort, which is going to be a
- 25:45Speaker 3: full uh dry or hopefully dry bath, sometimes a wet bath.
- 25:51Speaker 3: But that's really what people seem to be buying when
- 25:54Speaker 3: they get an expedition camper. Is that level of comfort.
- 25:58Speaker 3: Not a week goes by that someone doesn't reach out
- 26:01Speaker 3: to ask how they can help support the podcast. We
- 26:05Speaker 3: are supported entirely by Overland Journal the magazine. So when
- 26:11Speaker 3: you become a subscriber to the Overland Journal print magazine,

- 26:45Speaker 3: owned journalism that we have been famous for, so it
- 26:49Speaker 3: allows us to conduct those tests without any advertorial Another
- 26:54Speaker 3: way you can help out too. I produced a book
- 26:57Speaker 3: last year with Simon and Schuster called Overlanding One oh One.
- 27:00Speaker 3: You can find it on Amazon or Barnes and Noble
- 27:02Speaker 3: or even your local bookstore, and that encompasses my decades
- 27:07Speaker 3: of travel around the world, all my mistakes and failures
- 27:09Speaker 3: and and the lessons that I've learned in traveling around
- 27:12Speaker 3: the globe. Many of those that you hear on the
- 27:16Speaker 3: podcast have been distilled down into print form with great
- 27:19Speaker 3: lists and beautiful imagery, so you can find that at
- 27:22Speaker 3: your local bookstore. Overlanding One on one. And thank you
- 27:25Speaker 3: all for listening and for supporting us so much throughout
- 27:28Speaker 3: these years. I think that you make an important point.
- 27:33Speaker 3: I think we that's what people need to hear, is like,
- 27:35Speaker 3: first of all, be honest, why you're buying this thing.
- 27:37Speaker 3: A lot of people buy very expensive expedition vehicles because
- 27:40Speaker 3: it says something about them. It's what a way to
- 27:43Speaker 3: signal wealth than like this giant like ego on wheels,
- 27:48Speaker 3: Ego on wheels, right, But there's lots of people who
- 27:51Speaker 3: don't buy it for that reason, So I want to
- 27:52Speaker 3: acknowledge that too. There's lots of I've met many, like
- 27:56Speaker 3: I've met one. I've met a lot of Earthroamer owners
- 28:02Speaker 3: that love travel in their truck and they could care less,
- 28:06Speaker 3: but they do want to have the comfort. They want
- 28:08Speaker 3: to be able to live in this thing full time. Yeah,
- 28:11Speaker 3: but that's the advantage.
- 28:13Speaker 1: Yeah. And then the way you're talking about the truck
- 28:15Speaker 1: camper of like there's kind of some basics you need
- 28:17Speaker 1: to have in the truck camper. I do think when
- 28:20Speaker 1: you're spending that kind of money, there are just some
- 28:24Speaker 1: creature comforts and like solidity to those creature comforts that
- 28:30Speaker 1: you expect. Like I personally just want I want an
- 28:33Speaker 1: actual shower room. Yeah, you know, I want some decent storage,
- 28:38Speaker 1: some drawers, that kind of thing, because you really can
- 28:41Speaker 1: live out of these things comfortably long time, Like that
- 28:43Speaker 1: is the goal. You know, the you drive the PanAm,
- 28:46Speaker 1: you drive around the world, you drive across Africa, whatever
- 28:49Speaker 1: whatever the dream is, or maybe you're just driving to
- 28:51Speaker 1: Alaska or doing weekend trips. I mean, that's what we
- 28:54Speaker 1: do weekend trips. Now it's fine, you know, not everything
- 28:57Speaker 1: is an expedition, but to be remote with the comforts,
- 29:02Speaker 1: like Barry Andrews used to say, and I said remote.
- 29:04Speaker 1: I didn't say comfortable, he said, I said remote, not primitive.
- 29:09Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, exactly. Yeah.
- 29:11Speaker 1: But I mean, you know what, what's your What are
- 29:15Speaker 1: the big players? I guess I mean you have Earth
- 29:16Speaker 1: Romer that arguably not the OG, the OG in the
- 29:20Speaker 1: space like they're still around.
- 29:22Speaker 2: They still make some of the larger, more luxurious ones
- 29:25Speaker 2: of the class. There's adv Mobile who does kind of
- 29:28Speaker 2: custom to the client, usually on F five fifties, RAM
- 29:32Speaker 2: fifty five hundreds, some industrial chassis. They're really cool, like.
- 29:37Speaker 1: They're Michigan last they're Michigan based. Yeah, I've looked at them.
- 29:41Speaker 1: They're they're a little industrial.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Yeah, it's very euro style for sure. It's kind of
- 29:46Speaker 2: the you take the composite box and then you make
- 29:48Speaker 2: it your own, make it what you want. You can
- 29:50Speaker 2: do the cab over not or popped up or not.
- 29:52Speaker 2: Most of them are heardsided.
- 29:53Speaker 1: I believe that they.
- 29:55Speaker 2: We obviously have kind of the new newer player on
- 29:58Speaker 2: the block, which is a truckhouse and they're killing it
- 30:00Speaker 2: right now. I just went through their factory and the
- 30:04Speaker 2: av platform is amazing under it, and then they're just
- 30:08Speaker 2: doing it right. They're building it to another level of
- 30:11Speaker 2: engineering that we haven't really seen in this space in
- 30:14Speaker 2: North America at least, I know euro Camper and Bliss
- 30:17Speaker 2: are trying to think. There's a couple of big ones
- 30:20Speaker 2: in Europe that are really high end. But truck House
- 30:23Speaker 2: is doing it right. Like that's they're super cool and
- 30:26Speaker 2: they're not crazy expensive. They're not cheap, but they're not
- 30:28Speaker 2: crazy expensive. No, Like I think you could get like
- 30:31Speaker 2: the nicest thing they sell for under six hundred.
- 30:33Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly.
- 30:33Speaker 2: There's a lot of money, don't get me wrong. Like
- 30:35Speaker 2: it's a lot of my budget at the moment, but
- 30:37Speaker 2: that's an amazing value for the quality of the problem.
- 30:40Speaker 3: I would agree. Ross Monster does a cool pop top.
- 30:44Speaker 1: Yeah, the Baja is the one that I kind of
- 30:46Speaker 1: have my eye on right now. It's a hard sided camper,
- 30:50Speaker 1: but it's a hard sided pop top. Right, it's the Excel, right,
- 30:53Speaker 1: the ba XL. Yeah, well there's the Excel and there's
- 30:56Speaker 1: like the Trail. I actually like the Trail because I'm
- 30:59Speaker 1: telling you, these these big MPT tires just suck. They're
- 31:04Speaker 1: they just add a lot of driver fatigue and and
- 31:07Speaker 1: you know, they're in, they're in. They're in necessity for
- 31:10Speaker 1: the weight of a lot of these vehicles. We've you know,
- 31:13Speaker 1: we've we've talked about this on the podcast before. But yeah,
- 31:16Speaker 1: those things are like interesting, they're they're in like the
- 31:19Speaker 1: mid three fifties.
- 31:21Speaker 3: I think they're cool.
- 31:22Speaker 1: I think a lot of people are going to start
- 31:24Speaker 1: going from vans and looking at those.
- 31:26Speaker 3: And Ross Monster sells quite a few units. Yeah. The
- 31:30Speaker 3: Adrenalines another small, like more boutique made in Utah. I've
- 31:36Speaker 3: driven those trucks. Those are really and you know, the
- 31:39Speaker 3: good family that runs.
- 31:40Speaker 1: It guys, Yeah, they really.
- 31:42Speaker 3: They really care about making the.
- 31:44Speaker 1: Only guy that has worse vehicle a d D than me.
- 31:47Speaker 3: The honor of Adrenaline Camper total. They're really nice though,
- 31:50Speaker 3: the supernestly Yeah, and they're and they're very they're kind
- 31:54Speaker 3: of that more industrial where they're they're not going to
- 31:57Speaker 3: be fragile.
- 31:58Speaker 1: Like you can bring them a chassis and they can
- 32:00Speaker 1: build you something. And you know, they have an F
- 32:02Speaker 1: five fifty, they have a RAM based one. They'll put
- 32:05Speaker 1: them on a unimogue kind of similar to like the
- 32:08Speaker 1: adv Mobile.
- 32:09Speaker 2: Yeah, and you got to bring it back to to
- 32:11Speaker 2: super Tram, right. I mean they got the Megatron now,
- 32:12Speaker 2: which is yeah, rad rig well sorted similar price point.
- 32:17Speaker 3: So there's a lot of options, which in my mind,
- 32:21Speaker 3: I think you have to come back to something that's serialized.
- 32:24Speaker 3: I think that you want to avoid. We've all all
- 32:28Speaker 3: three of us have built some custom stuff and we've
- 32:30Speaker 3: all paid the price. It's just like it seems like
- 32:33Speaker 3: a great idea.
- 32:34Speaker 1: What would Scotty get of those of if you could
- 32:38Speaker 1: have any expedition veiew. I'm going to ask everybody this question.
- 32:41Speaker 2: I think before you before you answer that, you got
- 32:43Speaker 2: to look at the expedition truck camper. Expedition camper is
- 32:48Speaker 2: such a wide range, so we kind of got to
- 32:50Speaker 2: categorize that a little bit. Is you kind of have
- 32:53Speaker 2: one ton trucks, right, you have the medium duty trucks,
- 32:58Speaker 2: so FI fifty's ramp five hundred, stuff like that chassis,
- 33:01Speaker 2: and then you go up to bigger stuff like the
- 33:04Speaker 2: Globe ex Fission Vehicle EPIC.
- 33:06Speaker 1: Which is on it Storyteller things.
- 33:09Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, Storyteller owns GXB now, so they built that
- 33:12Speaker 2: it's huge and awesome, Like it's actually way easier to
- 33:15Speaker 2: drive than it looks like. I got to enjoy it
- 33:17Speaker 2: off road. But it's a month. It's a lot of truck.
- 33:19Speaker 2: I mean, the thing is huge, Like.
- 33:20Speaker 1: It's a totally different which I.
- 33:24Speaker 3: Think, really it really is blowing up. I mean to
- 33:28Speaker 3: answer your question, like, just because it's important for us
- 33:31Speaker 3: to be candid with our audience, I don't think I
- 33:32Speaker 3: want any of them. M Like, I'll take that eleven fifty.
- 33:38Speaker 2: You know it's going the other way.
- 33:40Speaker 3: I just I just I think that a lot of
- 33:43Speaker 3: times what ends up happening is, you know, I built
- 33:47Speaker 3: the vehicle that was really ideal for me. So the
- 33:50Speaker 3: Quartermaster is a pickup truck I can drive every day.
- 33:52Speaker 3: It's not too big. I kind of it's super funky,
- 33:55Speaker 3: which I'm weird, So like, I just there's I like
- 33:58Speaker 3: the payload of it. I like the fact that it's
- 34:00Speaker 3: solid axles. I like the fact that it looks square
- 34:02Speaker 3: and boxy and quart it's such a scotty vehicle. And
- 34:06Speaker 3: then the scout is simple. The scout is a pop
- 34:08Speaker 3: up so I can still put it in a container.
- 34:11Speaker 3: I want that truck to be able to go anywhere
- 34:13Speaker 3: in the world tomorrow if I want to stick it
- 34:15Speaker 3: in a container. So, but you know, the the pick
- 34:20Speaker 3: the expedition camper thing is absolutely fascinating to me. I
- 34:24Speaker 3: love it.
- 34:24Speaker 1: There're becoming a little RV adjacent.
- 34:27Speaker 3: I just don't. I just don't. I don't see a
- 34:29Speaker 3: need for me. For me, it would be very difficult,
- 34:32Speaker 3: says the guy who actually travels. Yeah, it would be
- 34:38Speaker 3: very difficult for me to want to travel in something
- 34:41Speaker 3: big like that.
- 34:42Speaker 1: So, I mean, I have noticed in planning trips having
- 34:48Speaker 1: one of these vehicles, you really have to consider where
- 34:52Speaker 1: you're going. I mean, you're you're precluded from a lot
- 34:55Speaker 1: of small towns, You're precluded from anything. You know, your
- 34:58Speaker 1: risk profileness just skyrockets quite quickly.
- 35:02Speaker 3: Yep. Yeah, we took one all the way down to
- 35:06Speaker 3: Panama years ago, an earth rom or a big one.
- 35:09Speaker 3: I was driving the smaller thrumber, but we had a
- 35:11Speaker 3: bigger earth Rummer with us, and we had to have
- 35:13Speaker 3: these lengths of PVC pipe to lift the power lines.
- 35:17Speaker 3: The power lines up and over it.
- 35:20Speaker 2: It does.
- 35:20Speaker 3: It changes travel too much for my taste. But I
- 35:24Speaker 3: can see why people. But I can see why people.
- 35:27Speaker 3: I can see why people love them though, because they're
- 35:29Speaker 3: also super comfortable. Yeah, And I think if you look
- 35:32Speaker 3: at a guy like Sinway Xavier those that are listening,
- 35:35Speaker 3: he's been on the podcast a bunch of times. This
- 35:37Speaker 3: guy is very minimalist, and he loves that truckhouse, Like
- 35:41Speaker 3: he loves it so much. I think he's living in
- 35:43Speaker 3: one right now. Yeah, so for him, it meets a
- 35:47Speaker 3: lot of his needs. So that's kind of cool that you.
- 35:50Speaker 2: Should like him. You have one, right, does all all
- 35:52Speaker 2: the readers know exactly our listeners know exactly what you're I.
- 35:55Speaker 1: Mean, yeah, but like I have an Earth Rommer, Like
- 35:57Speaker 1: I think if it wasn't an Earth Rummer, it's going
- 35:59Speaker 1: to be for me, I'd be looking at either a
- 36:03Speaker 1: Blissmobile or I would be looking at the truck house.
- 36:06Speaker 1: Like the truckhouse is the really easy answer for me,
- 36:08Speaker 1: Like it would be what translates to my life the
- 36:12Speaker 1: most right now. Like I like how simple it is.
- 36:14Speaker 1: I like how that team has really analyzed like the
- 36:17Speaker 1: failure modes of everything, because I mean, I've had one
- 36:21Speaker 1: of these films six years now, and you definitely do
- 36:23Speaker 1: think well, I do think that as you use them more,
- 36:26Speaker 1: you realize they're pretty reliable. The earth rummer. We've never
- 36:28Speaker 1: had anything on the earth rumer side really break forward side. Yeah,
- 36:33Speaker 1: you know, some of that's not necessarily Ford's fault. But
- 36:36Speaker 1: I like the truck house. It's very familiar. Yeah, but
- 36:40Speaker 1: I look at unimogs like like a U five hundred
- 36:44Speaker 1: with a Blissmobile because you can invest, you can buy
- 36:46Speaker 1: the camper, right, and I like that they have a
- 36:50Speaker 1: dry bath. I think that that's pretty nice. I think
- 36:52Speaker 1: that the space is used really well. I don't know
- 36:55Speaker 1: if I want a cab over truck necessarily, but you can.
- 36:59Speaker 1: You can take the asset and you can put it
- 37:01Speaker 1: on different vehicles. Right, if you wanted to put it
- 37:05Speaker 1: on a RAM fifty five hundred for the US, you
- 37:07Speaker 1: could do that and then literally put it into a
- 37:09Speaker 1: container and have a chassis in Europe.
- 37:12Speaker 2: You know.
- 37:12Speaker 1: I mean that's a little eccentric, right, But I wonder
- 37:15Speaker 1: if any one's ever ever done that. My friend Colin
- 37:17Speaker 1: has genuinely Okay.
- 37:19Speaker 3: That's cool, because you know, I've heard people have made
- 37:22Speaker 3: that argument for thirty years of like why to get
- 37:24Speaker 3: the container style camper? And I'm like, has anyone ever
- 37:27Speaker 3: ever actually done that? Yeah, like full disclosure.
- 37:30Speaker 1: Like I'm pretty good buddies with Spencer who runs Bliss
- 37:32Speaker 1: Mobile in the US, and he's constantly doing this for people. Okay,
- 37:37Speaker 1: that's cool, Like it is something that people do, Okay,
- 37:41Speaker 1: you know it. Yeah, like Colin bought his first. My
- 37:45Speaker 1: buddy Colin bought his first. It had a man chassis
- 37:48Speaker 1: and needed all of Europe with it, and then sent
- 37:51Speaker 1: it to Canada.
- 37:53Speaker 2: And box.
- 37:54Speaker 1: Just know that the truck and the box and then
- 37:56Speaker 1: the truck went back to you know, traveled around Canada.
- 38:00Speaker 1: Couldn't get it into the US because US citizen. Yeah, sure,
- 38:04Speaker 1: whatever the laws are. But the camper's fine. So you know,
- 38:09Speaker 1: brought the camper across the border the right way and
- 38:11Speaker 1: then it went onto another truck.
- 38:14Speaker 3: That's cool. That's cool.
- 38:15Speaker 1: Yeah, And then we got to talk.
- 38:17Speaker 2: Is that an expedition camper or is that just a
- 38:19Speaker 2: truck camper because it literally bolts up to a flat
- 38:24Speaker 2: out there.
- 38:25Speaker 3: I think if you spend more than one hundred grand
- 38:28Speaker 3: on it, it's an expedition. Yeah, what would you have?
- 38:32Speaker 2: So for me, it's really tough.
- 38:34Speaker 1: So like for your current situation with Kate and with
- 38:38Speaker 1: Sweet Little Road, I mean the current situation.
- 38:40Speaker 2: I went with a trailer in an R and B,
- 38:41Speaker 2: which we'll get to in a little bit. And it's
- 38:43Speaker 2: because I have a kid. So with three people, more
- 38:46Speaker 2: than two people, I personally don't think I want to
- 38:49Speaker 2: do an expedition truck.
- 38:50Speaker 1: It would get tight.
- 38:51Speaker 2: It just be too tight for full time, full time
- 38:53Speaker 2: with more than two people, with two people Exbibion truck
- 38:56Speaker 2: all the way, one hundred percent. I want to park
- 38:58Speaker 2: in one single like spot and not have to detach
- 39:02Speaker 2: a trailer and do all the stuff that trailers have
- 39:04Speaker 2: to do, which we'll get into. So it's a tough
- 39:06Speaker 2: one for me that the quick answers is a f
- 39:10Speaker 2: three to fifty or a one ton truck chassis or smaller.
- 39:14Speaker 2: I don't want to go bigger. I am like you, Scott,
- 39:16Speaker 2: I don't want I want something I can get around
- 39:19Speaker 2: and maneuver.
- 39:19Speaker 4: And one to meaning like thirty five hundred and thirty
- 39:23Speaker 4: to fifty or eight kind of thing. Sure it would
- 39:26Speaker 4: be the long it would be the biggest truck I
- 39:28Speaker 4: would do. So for me, truckhouse is the is the
- 39:31Speaker 4: quick answer A million percent. A four door truckhouse av
- 39:35Speaker 4: on forties like that thing is just super capable. It's maneuverable.
- 39:38Speaker 2: I just drove one. It's like so easy to drive,
- 39:41Speaker 2: like highway, back roads whatever. The only downside of that
- 39:45Speaker 2: truck for me and the way that I travel is
- 39:48Speaker 2: I require multiple mountain bikes and multiple kayaks. Where do
- 39:52Speaker 2: you put kayaks on that thing? You have to build
- 39:54Speaker 2: a custom rack on the back off a hitch or
- 39:56Speaker 2: something and have vertical and I have some longer boats.
- 39:59Speaker 2: So that's the limiting and changing how I travel, and
- 40:03Speaker 2: that's where I have a problem. So that's where i'd
- 40:04Speaker 2: start looking at either an adv mobile custom rig or
- 40:08Speaker 2: a ross monster with the pop top so I could
- 40:11Speaker 2: get it just low enough to put racks on the
- 40:13Speaker 2: top and put my long kayaks on stackers. Again again,
- 40:18Speaker 2: it's use case like. For me, travel is an amazing
- 40:21Speaker 2: part of life, but I use it as a conduit
- 40:23Speaker 2: to go do it outdoor adventures, so whatever that is.
- 40:26Speaker 2: Kayaking is my passion, whitewater, but kiteboarding, surf kayaking, mountain biking,
- 40:32Speaker 2: rock climbing, and you gotta I gotta have that gear
- 40:34Speaker 2: with me, and so I gotta have whatever rig I have,
- 40:36Speaker 2: I have to be able to to shit in it.
- 40:39Speaker 2: I got to be able to sleep in it comfortably.
- 40:42Speaker 2: It has to get me over rough terrain, and it
- 40:44Speaker 2: has to carry my gear. If it doesn't carry my gear,
- 40:46Speaker 2: there's no point. So it's tough. So exhibition vehicles, I
- 40:50Speaker 2: don't currently own one because of that and my last expedition.
- 40:54Speaker 2: The last vehicle I built was an exp is what
- 40:57Speaker 2: we called it. It was built at the XP Camper factory.
- 41:00Speaker 2: I built the molds for the panels to create a
- 41:03Speaker 2: box essentially with a pop top on the back. So
- 41:05Speaker 2: I had it how long?
- 41:06Speaker 1: How long was I was like eight foot?
- 41:08Speaker 2: The box was eight foot. It was an eight foot box. Yeah, correct,
- 41:11Speaker 2: So it was eight foot square essentially on the back
- 41:14Speaker 2: of it, but had no cab over. So I had
- 41:16Speaker 2: to build it custom because nobody really did that. So
- 41:18Speaker 2: it was pop top and no cab over. The cab
- 41:21Speaker 2: over I built a custom rack that threw bolted through
- 41:24Speaker 2: the cab in order to hold my kayaks and mountain
- 41:26Speaker 2: I remember them, and then the top down. So with
- 41:29Speaker 2: that truck in theory could fit in a shipping container
- 41:32Speaker 2: and that was the goal was like maybe you had
- 41:35Speaker 2: aired down a little bit. It was only on thirty threes,
- 41:37Speaker 2: no lift, and there's a lot of things I would
- 41:40Speaker 2: do differently these days, but that truck I had to
- 41:43Speaker 2: do all that custom stuff because it just doesn't exist.
- 41:45Speaker 2: Most people that travel on this tend to to buy
- 41:48Speaker 2: big expedition trucks tend to be older people that have
- 41:51Speaker 2: money and time right, and they don't necessarily carry as
- 41:55Speaker 2: many big toys, and the big toys is tough.
- 41:58Speaker 3: It adds an equation not to be an ad.
- 42:00Speaker 1: But Bliss Mobile does have an eight foot rising roof box,
- 42:05Speaker 1: which we can do.
- 42:05Speaker 2: But it's still tall. It's still it's still relatively tall.
- 42:09Speaker 2: You wouldn't want to put a roofrack on top of
- 42:11Speaker 2: that and put kayaks on it.
- 42:12Speaker 1: Well, I'm just saying like it was very similar to
- 42:13Speaker 1: what you had. It's just it's a rising roof instead of.
- 42:19Speaker 2: Like a pop top. Big difference is that one pretty
- 42:22Speaker 2: much you're not going to live in unless it's popped. Mine.
- 42:26Speaker 2: I could fully stealth camp in the entire thing was
- 42:28Speaker 2: designed so the top you don't have to pop it,
- 42:31Speaker 2: and you could do every function inside the camper, which
- 42:34Speaker 2: doesn't currently exist.
- 42:35Speaker 1: So the stealth camp thing used to be a real
- 42:37Speaker 1: big like advantage of like the van life. Like I
- 42:41Speaker 1: remember when like Foster Huntington like started this hashtag of
- 42:45Speaker 1: van life and what the heck is that? And you
- 42:47Speaker 1: could just kind of like pull off on Highway one
- 42:50Speaker 1: and and camp. It's interesting how it's how it's changed.
- 42:54Speaker 1: Like the vans kind of moving into that world have
- 42:57Speaker 1: just blown up. I mean they're the you to drive,
- 43:00Speaker 1: they're the most accessible, but they're the OG, right like
- 43:04Speaker 1: the vans th G like og. Yeah, sure, just sleeping.
- 43:08Speaker 1: It doesn't matter if it's outfitted or not.
- 43:09Speaker 3: But since the very first van exactly, Yeah, basically when
- 43:13Speaker 3: Van number one was made, people were sleeping in.
- 43:16Speaker 2: It for you, you know.
- 43:17Speaker 1: I mean vans I think are just like very accessible
- 43:21Speaker 1: for people. And the sprinters drive great example, feel really
- 43:25Speaker 1: comfortable driving them. They get reasonable fuel economy. You see
- 43:29Speaker 1: a lot of people that are new to the to
- 43:31Speaker 1: the space. You know, maybe they're inspired to hit the
- 43:35Speaker 1: road and travel. They don't come from a background of
- 43:38Speaker 1: four wheelean or anything like that. You see a lot
- 43:40Speaker 1: of these people end up in vans, and frankly, like
- 43:43Speaker 1: I see why.
- 43:44Speaker 2: Generally vans aren't as capable, but they're way more accessible.
- 43:48Speaker 2: Anybody can hop in a van and just drive it.
- 43:50Speaker 2: It drives generally like a car. That's one of the benefits.
- 43:53Speaker 3: And a lot of them even fit in a standard
- 43:55Speaker 3: parking spot, like if you get a one forty four,
- 43:58Speaker 3: you know it fits in a regular parking spot.
- 44:01Speaker 2: That really depends on what you want to do with
- 44:03Speaker 2: I mean that's where I started all this before I
- 44:04Speaker 2: knew what overlanding a sportsmobile and.
- 44:07Speaker 1: That was like back in the day, and it was
- 44:09Speaker 1: like it was like, oh my buddy, Brian, he has
- 44:11Speaker 1: a sportsmobile at a four by four sports nobile.
- 44:14Speaker 2: So live thirty threes like pop top extended body E
- 44:17Speaker 2: three fifty, which they still make E series but they're
- 44:20Speaker 2: only cutaway is now available new, so it's really hard
- 44:22Speaker 2: to find good condition older ones. But they're way more
- 44:26Speaker 2: capable because it's basically a truck versus the modern vans
- 44:31Speaker 2: that are they're vans, their delivery vans. It's not built
- 44:34Speaker 2: on a truck chassis, which is basically an an E
- 44:36Speaker 2: series is it's a truck with a van like van
- 44:39Speaker 2: body squished on the front of it.
- 44:41Speaker 3: And sportsmobiles are cool or the field vans now. I
- 44:44Speaker 3: mean I drove all the way through Copper Canyon one
- 44:46Speaker 3: of those things. It was super awesome.
- 44:48Speaker 2: It was good.
- 44:48Speaker 1: I look at the field Van then I just think
- 44:50Speaker 1: that those things are super cool. They did a good
- 44:52Speaker 1: job with those, yeah, you know, because they're slightly wider, right,
- 44:55Speaker 1: Like they take the cutaway body and then they're talking
- 44:58Speaker 1: about the classic.
- 44:59Speaker 2: Yeah, so that's their new classic. They only do an
- 45:01Speaker 2: extended body. It's three inches wider on each side. In
- 45:04Speaker 2: the back looks like the standard van body from the
- 45:07Speaker 2: E series. They follow the lines perfectly, but it's all composite.
- 45:10Speaker 2: So that's a volume, like huge, way more volume inside
- 45:14Speaker 2: and it has the traditional pop top that they've been
- 45:16Speaker 2: known for. The thing is rat in all the ways.
- 45:19Speaker 2: It's got it.
- 45:19Speaker 3: You know, what do those sell for? Like if you
- 45:21Speaker 3: were kind of turned key on one of those, I'm.
- 45:24Speaker 2: Gonna misquote this. I want to say it was around six.
- 45:27Speaker 2: They're about eighteen or two years out, eighteen months or
- 45:29Speaker 2: two years out a post. I talked to Johnny at
- 45:32Speaker 2: field Van quite a bit about those, because I still
- 45:34Speaker 2: drool on him every time.
- 45:35Speaker 3: I say those are sweet.
- 45:36Speaker 2: It's so cool. It's just a really and the four
- 45:38Speaker 2: x four system on him was overbuild. They're on thirty fives.
- 45:41Speaker 1: I think it's like an Atlas, twin Stick and the
- 45:45Speaker 1: Dino Track. They get really into the E Series fans.
- 45:48Speaker 1: I mean, I mean frankly, like the Sprinter to me
- 45:51Speaker 1: is like very utility, Like well it's not maybe that's
- 45:54Speaker 1: not the right word there is. They just they do
- 45:57Speaker 1: the job right, very functional.
- 46:00Speaker 2: There's more luxury and room in most of these other
- 46:02Speaker 2: commercial vans because that's what they're designed for, is volumetric space, right,
- 46:06Speaker 2: But the E Series was never really about that.
- 46:08Speaker 1: The series, I don't know, it kind of like excites
- 46:11Speaker 1: me more like they're a little bit more contrarian of
- 46:13Speaker 1: a choice these days, and in a world of you know,
- 46:16Speaker 1: I mean you go to like tell your iDeer Moab
- 46:19Speaker 1: and there's eight million sprinters passing you, right, and they
- 46:23Speaker 1: all kind of look the same. Like I think that
- 46:26Speaker 1: I don't want to see people have forgotten about like
- 46:29Speaker 1: the E Series and like field Van and that kind
- 46:31Speaker 1: of stuff. Like I mean, I do like the field Van, Sprinter,
- 46:34Speaker 1: Sprinter things at the pop top, you know, a little
- 46:36Speaker 1: easier to drive.
- 46:37Speaker 3: Does the new chassis Cutaways that have the seven to
- 46:41Speaker 3: three ye Godzilla.
- 46:43Speaker 2: Motor right, it's only to ask no de seloption.
- 46:45Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a great motor.
- 46:46Speaker 2: Too.
- 46:46Speaker 3: You could take that around the world.
- 46:48Speaker 2: So so that's the hot market. You're you're all gonna
- 46:51Speaker 2: see this at Expo here in a couple of days.
- 46:52Speaker 2: But there's a lot there's I don't know how many're
- 46:54Speaker 2: gonna be there, but I think there's gonna be at
- 46:58Speaker 2: least three or four East Series cutaway van expedition rigged
- 47:03Speaker 2: things hitting the market in this year in twenty twenty six.
- 47:07Speaker 2: One or two of them have not been announced publicly yet.
- 47:10Speaker 2: There's a two that did recently, Geo Trek Geotrek I
- 47:15Speaker 2: think is one of them. Basically, they're got a independent
- 47:20Speaker 2: attachment point for the body on the back is what
- 47:22Speaker 2: their main thing is. That allows the chassis to flex
- 47:25Speaker 2: a lot and they get a ton of articulation out
- 47:26Speaker 2: of the thing. I think up thirty sevens and they're
- 47:29Speaker 2: using you Joint stuff. So you Joint has figured out
- 47:32Speaker 2: the E series and how to do four wheel drive
- 47:34Speaker 2: systems and all from basic to really badass. So I
- 47:40Speaker 2: think you're going to see a lot more of that
- 47:41Speaker 2: now that But who knows how long the cutaway is
- 47:44Speaker 2: going to be available. The E Series has been around forever,
- 47:47Speaker 2: supposed to end in twenty eighteen, was the last official thing.
- 47:50Speaker 2: It didn't, and they've upgraded it kind of one and
- 47:52Speaker 2: a half two times since then with the interior and
- 47:55Speaker 2: the electronics and the motor and all the things. So
- 47:58Speaker 2: who knows how long that'll be around. Right now, ambulances
- 48:00Speaker 2: and those type of industries are keeping it alive because
- 48:03Speaker 2: it's such a durable chassis that people still want it.
- 48:06Speaker 3: Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. So's the what's
- 48:08Speaker 3: the benefit? Like, what's the key consideration around these vans?
- 48:13Speaker 3: Like why why would somebody buy that over a slide
- 48:16Speaker 3: in truck camper or an expedition camper. What's the advantages?
- 48:19Speaker 1: I think they're easier to drive. I think you have
- 48:21Speaker 1: all in one living space.
- 48:23Speaker 3: I think a little bit of cab over so you
- 48:24Speaker 3: get some additional we like overall living space out of
- 48:27Speaker 3: a smaller package.
- 48:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean you end up like a one forty
- 48:31Speaker 1: four sprinter is roughly the same wheelbase as like a tundra, yeah, right,
- 48:36Speaker 1: or and.
- 48:36Speaker 2: The most living space in the same footprint by far
- 48:39Speaker 2: any of the.
- 48:41Speaker 3: Semi camp over yeah.
- 48:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 48:43Speaker 1: And I also think that they're casual, you know, in
- 48:45Speaker 1: the way that I was saying, I like a four
- 48:46Speaker 1: wheel camper because it's it's transactional, like you can buy one,
- 48:50Speaker 1: you can use it, you can sell it. You know,
- 48:52Speaker 1: not everybody does this forever. Yeah, a lot of people
- 48:56Speaker 1: have an idea of a of a big trip. They're
- 48:59Speaker 1: big thing that they're doing. I mean, you know, like
- 49:01Speaker 1: the Winnibigo' revel is the one that I always like
- 49:04Speaker 1: look at, like there's a million of them, you know,
- 49:07Speaker 1: there's always somebody looking for one.
- 49:11Speaker 3: Yeah. Easy to resell sounds like easy to resell can
- 49:14Speaker 3: be easier, yeah, I mean more so than something custom.
- 49:18Speaker 2: It's a bigger market, right van. The van market is
- 49:20Speaker 2: bigger than ex vision.
- 49:21Speaker 1: Trucks, like, yeah, for sure. You know, they can also
- 49:25Speaker 1: be very affordable. I mean you can look at some
- 49:27Speaker 1: of the like the RAM Pro Master based things, and
- 49:30Speaker 1: you're looking at, you know, vans that are transacting brand
- 49:33Speaker 1: new in the sixties now they don't have much for
- 49:35Speaker 1: off road capability, but you may.
- 49:37Speaker 3: Know because a pro Master's front will drive, the front
- 49:39Speaker 3: wheel drive and the kind of have that l Yeah.
- 49:44Speaker 1: Anyways, but like I see Europeans driving those things in
- 49:46Speaker 1: the United States all the time, and they're doing the
- 49:48Speaker 1: PanAm with it or whatnot. I don't know, Like I've
- 49:52Speaker 1: always been van curious, I've never so the.
- 49:56Speaker 2: Van life is the good life. I still swear by
- 49:57Speaker 2: van life. The problem is capa ability to get real
- 50:01Speaker 2: capability in a van chassis is near. It's not impossible,
- 50:06Speaker 2: but it's really really hard. You have to do something
- 50:08Speaker 2: like an E series even it was an angle halt
- 50:12Speaker 2: all round, yeah, Eagle Health all run. They're making like
- 50:15Speaker 2: thirty seven's proper Troops speed transfer case on a sprinter.
- 50:18Speaker 2: So you take a US sprinter, you send it Germany,
- 50:20Speaker 2: they do all the cool stuff, send it back things epic. Right.
- 50:23Speaker 2: I've driven one one hundred thousand bucks, yeah, right, with
- 50:26Speaker 2: nothing in it. That's without a toilet.
- 50:27Speaker 3: And that's for the modification that doesn't include that at
- 50:31Speaker 3: that point, why it doesn't include the van. But basically
- 50:33Speaker 3: making a g wagon out of a sprinter, Yeah, but it's.
- 50:36Speaker 2: Still not it's still a bread band with flexible chassis,
- 50:39Speaker 2: like really capable and huge amount of comfort you can
- 50:42Speaker 2: create in a capable vehicle, but it's really hard. It's
- 50:46Speaker 2: rare to have a van that has the capability if
- 50:48Speaker 2: you really want to go far. I always say like
- 50:50Speaker 2: that last two three percent of travels on those really
- 50:54Speaker 2: hard adventures. That's where a lot of my memories, core
- 50:57Speaker 2: memories come from. So for me, I have I want
- 50:59Speaker 2: to vehicle. They can get me those last little bit
- 51:01Speaker 2: even though seven percent of the time I'm not using
- 51:06Speaker 2: that capability, Like, I still want to have it in there,
- 51:08Speaker 2: and it's cooler to have the capability.
- 51:11Speaker 3: Well, and remember we've were dealing with so many more
- 51:13Speaker 3: people outdoors now, so if you can get three percent
- 51:16Speaker 3: further than a sprinter van, you're going to have maybe
- 51:20Speaker 3: a view all to yourself.
- 51:22Speaker 1: That's that's the thing we like about like the exhibition
- 51:24Speaker 1: vehicle that Laura says all the time is it just
- 51:26Speaker 1: gets us a little bit further than like the trailers.
- 51:29Speaker 1: It gets us further than the vans. It doesn't get
- 51:33Speaker 1: us as far as usually like a truck camper or
- 51:35Speaker 1: wedge camper or roof ten on a Tacoma or whatever.
- 51:38Speaker 1: But you know, you do have to consider the places
- 51:41Speaker 1: you really want to go, but also how much that
- 51:45Speaker 1: is worth it to you, right, Like one vehicle is
- 51:49Speaker 1: never going to do absolutely everything.
- 51:51Speaker 3: Yep.
- 51:51Speaker 1: You know That's where trailers get interesting is you can
- 51:54Speaker 1: have a base camp and you can have something that's
- 51:56Speaker 1: a little bit more capable to go further. I think
- 51:59Speaker 1: that that's and I mean, that's kind of what you're
- 52:01Speaker 1: doing in a way.
- 52:02Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, you know, let's talk trailers for a
- 52:04Speaker 3: little bit.
- 52:04Speaker 2: Sure, let's hop into trailers. Yeah. I'm currently living full
- 52:07Speaker 2: time on the road with my wife and four year
- 52:09Speaker 2: old in a twenty five foot travel trailer, so proper RV.
- 52:13Speaker 2: It's a very nice one, but it's not it's still
- 52:17Speaker 2: an RV. It is not an expedition vehicle. It's not
- 52:19Speaker 2: built as such. But I'm towing it with a RAM Prospector,
- 52:23Speaker 2: not the XL, the regular one. So thirty SEVENS seems
- 52:26Speaker 2: to be the perfect package. I'm in love with that truck.
- 52:29Speaker 2: So it's a twenty six RAM thirty five hundred Diesel
- 52:33Speaker 2: Laramie Level two with all the bells and whistles on
- 52:38Speaker 2: thirty SEVENS, bumpers, snorkel. It's got a smart cap on
- 52:42Speaker 2: the back, which is awesome, protects all my gear, and
- 52:46Speaker 2: then four crossbars on it, so I got six kayaks
- 52:49Speaker 2: on there at all times and the mountain bikes and
- 52:52Speaker 2: everything in the back.
- 52:52Speaker 1: Six It looks absolutely ridiculous.
- 52:56Speaker 2: I have it down to six like that took a
- 52:58Speaker 2: lot of work to get sold over in the water.
- 53:01Speaker 2: You would float, it would self, right, the truck itself right, Yes,
- 53:06Speaker 2: I like that.
- 53:09Speaker 3: So what's what's the brand? What's the brand of the trailer?
- 53:12Speaker 2: It's a Lance trailer, so I bought it used on.
- 53:14Speaker 3: I didn't know Lance made trailers. Yes, I knew they
- 53:17Speaker 3: made campers.
- 53:17Speaker 2: They're known for truck campers right in this space. But
- 53:20Speaker 2: although they make lots of trailers and they have for
- 53:22Speaker 2: a long time, they're kind of I don't.
- 53:24Speaker 3: Want to be known for quality.
- 53:25Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, and they they were changing owners again when
- 53:29Speaker 2: I bought mine, but I ended up buying just to
- 53:31Speaker 2: use one of the market like the thing stickers at
- 53:33Speaker 2: crazy money, like ninety thousand dollars, but they don't ever
- 53:37Speaker 2: transact at what they sticker for. So I think the
- 53:40Speaker 2: previous owner bought it one one person owned it and
- 53:44Speaker 2: slept in it seven nights before I bought it, so
- 53:45Speaker 2: it's basically brand new, even though it was a used trailer.
- 53:47Speaker 2: He bought it for like fifty five or sixty from
- 53:51Speaker 2: a dealer, and then I bought it used for around
- 53:53Speaker 2: forty five grand. Wow, so a lot of money because
- 53:56Speaker 2: you could buy the same exact trailer from some of
- 53:59Speaker 2: these big RV manufacturers, brand new sticker around fifty to
- 54:03Speaker 2: fifty five and you can buy them for thirty three
- 54:06Speaker 2: thirty four grand, all day, every day any dealer in
- 54:08Speaker 2: the country. We shopped heavily. I researched this stuff. I
- 54:12Speaker 2: didn't know the RV market inside and out like I
- 54:14Speaker 2: do now before I went down this rabbit hole and
- 54:17Speaker 2: this camper. There's pretty much none. There's two manufacturers that
- 54:22Speaker 2: make them that are four season, that actually work in
- 54:24Speaker 2: four seasons outside RV which are made in Oregon. They're
- 54:28Speaker 2: a little they feel like an rvside.
- 54:31Speaker 1: My father in law had one and a lot of
- 54:33Speaker 1: things fell off of it, but otherwise it.
- 54:35Speaker 2: Was they're built better than most RVs that are coming
- 54:38Speaker 2: out of Indiana, but they're and they're better insulated, they
- 54:43Speaker 2: have way better systems for four season camping, and that
- 54:45Speaker 2: was why we were looking at them, and they're still
- 54:47Speaker 2: they're also very expensive. They're in that like seventy to
- 54:49Speaker 2: one hundred grand range for a twenty five footage trailer.
- 54:53Speaker 2: Lance is similar, little nicer interior, feels a little more homey,
- 55:00Speaker 2: feels a little more expedition truck, but it's literally screwed
- 55:03Speaker 2: together and pine wood and cheap veneer instead of glued together,
- 55:08Speaker 2: stapled together and fiberboard like you get out of a
- 55:11Speaker 2: lot of basic RVs. And that does make a difference,
- 55:13Speaker 2: it does, for sure.
- 55:15Speaker 3: But what's the length of the camper?
- 55:17Speaker 2: Twenty five feet okay, and that's pretty big. It's kind
- 55:21Speaker 2: of medium small actually in the camper world, I went
- 55:24Speaker 2: really hard to find one that would give me enough
- 55:27Speaker 2: space for all of us to live in, but also
- 55:29Speaker 2: be relatively maneuverable where I could park it just about
- 55:31Speaker 2: anywhere and fit in normal RV parking spots and stuff
- 55:35Speaker 2: like that. It's been the right size, I think. The
- 55:38Speaker 2: way it's set up, it's a murphy bed with a
- 55:40Speaker 2: queen at the front. It's got a dynet three sided
- 55:42Speaker 2: dynet on a slide out in the middle, and in
- 55:45Speaker 2: the back it has like a full bathroom, separate shower
- 55:48Speaker 2: from the toilet, but full bathroom, and then a rear
- 55:52Speaker 2: bunk beds that are a crossways east west in the
- 55:55Speaker 2: back of the thing, so three bunks and my kid
- 55:56Speaker 2: gets the top bunk and the bottom two bunks are
- 55:58Speaker 2: for all my gears here kayak hear all that stuff.
- 56:02Speaker 2: So it allows us to have the kid go to
- 56:04Speaker 2: sleep in the back, I can do work in the
- 56:06Speaker 2: middle or watch TV or whatever, and my wife can
- 56:09Speaker 2: sleep in the front all the same time. Wow, which
- 56:11Speaker 2: is unhurt. You can't do that in expedition camper, right,
- 56:14Speaker 2: you can't do that in a truck camper. So for
- 56:17Speaker 2: full time living, that's been awesome. Like, we've been really
- 56:20Speaker 2: really grateful for you. Did you flip the axle or
- 56:23Speaker 2: put some different tires or anything on it? We didn't know.
- 56:26Speaker 2: We thought about all that. I might put a better
- 56:28Speaker 2: tire on it. Next. The tires are wearing a little weird.
- 56:31Speaker 2: They're just some trailer, good year trailer tires. But the
- 56:33Speaker 2: way the suspension is on this specific trailer, it's not
- 56:36Speaker 2: doesn't lend itself to that, sadly, but it's pretty good
- 56:39Speaker 2: suspension off road. It doesn't have a ton of clearance,
- 56:42Speaker 2: but has some I'm not going to drag it down
- 56:45Speaker 2: that many rough roads straight up. It's built like in
- 56:46Speaker 2: our gravel road.
- 56:47Speaker 1: Remember that Bruder trailer here, Oh my god, that thing
- 56:50Speaker 1: was insane. Yeah, it had like insane independent suspension. It
- 56:54Speaker 1: was like forty eight fold systems. I mean this was
- 56:56Speaker 1: before forty eight volt was like a thing. It was
- 56:59Speaker 1: like a spaceship for the time when we saw the
- 57:03Speaker 1: one that I just saw, it actually has a water maker.
- 57:06Speaker 1: It makes water from the air.
- 57:08Speaker 2: Huh.
- 57:09Speaker 3: Like it you can park in the middle of nowhere
- 57:12Speaker 3: and that's a brooder. Yeah wow, so it has it
- 57:16Speaker 3: has that crazy it'll it'll pull in air from the
- 57:20Speaker 3: outside and remove the houses, remove the remove the water
- 57:25Speaker 3: from that.
- 57:25Speaker 1: That would work really well in Australia for a lot
- 57:28Speaker 1: of like beach camping and kind of stuff.
- 57:30Speaker 3: So yeah, you could technically you could be permanently remote
- 57:33Speaker 3: because you have tons of solar water maker. Yeah.
- 57:37Speaker 1: Yeah, because I guess on one end, like you have
- 57:38Speaker 1: what you and Brian as you kind of have more
- 57:41Speaker 1: of the traditional RV style trailer with a really capable
- 57:45Speaker 1: like a V prospect or trucks so you can go
- 57:47Speaker 1: and you know, do your little trips you know, out
- 57:50Speaker 1: from there. But you know there's trailers span this like
- 57:55Speaker 1: huge range, right, I mean, like I've always thought you know,
- 58:00Speaker 1: some of these, like I was like the at Chaser
- 58:03Speaker 1: trailers for example. I mean it was everything that you
- 58:05Speaker 1: would do for like a basic vehicle build. I mean
- 58:08Speaker 1: not a basic vehicle building.
- 58:09Speaker 3: You're right. I think that's the roof.
- 58:12Speaker 1: Tent, the water, that kind of thing that was all done.
- 58:15Speaker 1: I mean now you have like the Patriot campers, which
- 58:18Speaker 1: I think are pretty cool.
- 58:20Speaker 2: But even within those, they have the basic trailer, Like
- 58:23Speaker 2: there was kind of an upgraded Chaser, right with more features,
- 58:26Speaker 2: and now they have the new ST five, which, yeah,
- 58:30Speaker 2: you can live inside.
- 58:32Speaker 1: Yeah, like Matt Pryor who's driving around the world and
- 58:34Speaker 1: it's Grenadier with you know, two little kids. They've got
- 58:37Speaker 1: a Patriot and you know, it's allowed him to have
- 58:41Speaker 1: just like a completely separate stock Grenadier. Yeah, and then
- 58:46Speaker 1: he has this, you know, this trailer that can go
- 58:49Speaker 1: anywhere and his vehicle's not super overloaded. They can leave
- 58:52Speaker 1: the trailer somewhere and go in town.
- 58:54Speaker 3: And the Grenadier has the advantage of a pretty big
- 58:57Speaker 3: towing capacity, so you can, yeah, you can kind of
- 59:00Speaker 3: tow those things around. Again, I come back to like,
- 59:03Speaker 3: if you're going to tow a trailer, it's sure as
- 59:05Speaker 3: hell better have a hot water shower in it. Otherwise,
- 59:08Speaker 3: what you know, if you don't include those additional comforts, Yeah,
- 59:12Speaker 3: all you're doing is adding space that you're just gonna
- 59:15Speaker 3: fill with other stuff. It's like, it's like, just build
- 59:18Speaker 3: it into your car, as opposed to spending fifty sixty
- 59:21Speaker 3: thousand dollars to toe around a rooften. I don't that's
- 59:24Speaker 3: I get it.
- 59:24Speaker 1: That would be my cree. Think of some of these
- 59:27Speaker 1: like Australian you know, camera trailers, like they're very expensive tents. Yeah,
- 59:33Speaker 1: you know, like for me, if it doesn't have a door,
- 59:36Speaker 1: I'm not towing it. And I think that's why Patriot
- 59:39Speaker 1: just came out with the ST five and the ST
- 59:41Speaker 1: seven is that they needed to have something that was
- 59:43Speaker 1: that where it makes sense to tow and pay for
- 59:46Speaker 1: something that expensive is it's got to have some comfort,
- 59:50Speaker 1: it's got to have some amenities that you can't build
- 59:52Speaker 1: into a standard vehicle build.
- 59:54Speaker 2: I think you need to differentiate between that too. Like
- 59:57Speaker 2: a off road trailer with a rooftop ten or some
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: type of tent system that pops off of it is
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: very different than any kind of trailer off road or
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: on that you sleep inside of and has a bathroom
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: and all of that. Those are very different. And I
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: would say that the rooftop tent type thing, you can't
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: really compare that in this discussion we're talking about vans
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: and truck campers and stuff. You talk one that has
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: the other features.
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: Yeah, they're very like they're they're very specific to like Australia,
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: like I understand where you would want to have, you know,
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: a Patriot camper if you were crossing the Canning Stock
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: Route or you know the Simpson Desert or something. You know,
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: Like they're rugged. A traditional trailer is either going to
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: be too heavy, you're going to rattle the thing to death.
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: They are super durable.
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: But I don't know if we like I feel like
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: in the US, it's like we're doing more like technical
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: sport driving and then like pavement or kind of ducking
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: down a forest service road. And I'm not sure.
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: Even the brewder though has both. Right, So the brooder
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: like yeah, you sleep inside of it, but you generally
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: live outside in that thing like the kitchen and everything's outside.
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: It's very that Australian or South African style where you're
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: you're camping. You just happen to maybe have a bed
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: inside and maybe have a shower inside, but it's still
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: a camping like that's different than an RV trailer like
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: I have, like I'm not living outside like everything's indoors.
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: I can live outside of it, like you can put
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: a you know, a stove outside and barbecue or whatever.
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: But it's basically like having a rolling house. That's different
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: than having like even these truck campers that we've talked
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: about so far, you're living inside, like you're not. You're
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: not camping out outside in a tent yep. Even my
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: last my Lexus GX for sixty, I had a sleep
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: platform like a Gooseki or sleep set, so I sleep
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: inside of it. No rooftop tent ever, Like I'm not,
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: I'm not completely against you.
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: You got stuff you want to put on the topks
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: I can only fit about six on that. But you know,
- 1:01:55Speaker 3: I mean the trail, the trail. The trailers make sense
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: in my mind, I adding comfort and convenience. They really
- 1:02:03Speaker 3: do make sense. I just I think with all this stuff,
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: like I think even about the truck camper, the one
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: big differentiation between my truck camper and an earth roamer
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: is the fact that I need to do like two
- 1:02:15Speaker 3: or three steps at least to make any of those
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: things work. So if I want to use the bathroom,
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: I've got to unstrapped, I got to pull it out
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: of the little cubby. I gotta do the thing. I
- 1:02:26Speaker 3: got to put the bag in, whereas you in an
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: expedition camper, there's no friction. You go straight to the toilet.
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: If I want to take a shower, I gotta unzip
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: the bag.
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: Great when you have like truck stop Indian food.
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: Yeah, but like so that, I mean we're coming back
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: to like you can have like I have a heater,
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: ab an air conditioner. I have all those things, but
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: they all take steps an effort to get to and there.
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: None of them are going to be as easy and
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: frictionless as like in a camper.
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: Really important.
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: I think the most underrated of all the four different
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: things we've talked about, I think the truck camper is
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: the most underrated. You know, kind of like you know,
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: home on wheels, right. It ticks all of those boxes
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: of comfort. It allows you to have, you know, in
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: many cases of shower, a toilet, a little sink. You know,
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: you're you're you're elevating your comfort beyond you know, just
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: just a vehicle or or a vehicle build. I think
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: the value money is good on them, you know. I
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: think expedition vehicles the value for money equation you're not
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: even really thinking of yeah, you can't.
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: It's hard to hard.
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: It's hard.
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: I mean, I mean, you know it's it's it's hard
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: to it's I.
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: Think there's kind of three factors here, and you've touched
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: on some of them. One is price right, So with
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: a truck camper, you can disassociate the truck camper from
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: the truck. So now you have two assets instead of one.
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: In a van or an expedition camper, it's one asset engine.
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: Pretty much nobody wants them.
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: I don't. I don't know about that, but I'm just
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: saying they plummet. Like you your truck when your engine
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: went one hundred percent, have to put a new engine
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: in it. Because it's mated to the camper. You can't
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: take the truck camper off trash or or have the
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: insurance total the truck and then redo it. It's just
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: not an option. Same with vans. A lot of vans
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: like once you build it completely out and you go
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: overboard with all the build out, you that's worth way
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: more than the chassis it's on. And then if the
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: engine wears out or the transmission wears out, you just
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: have to repair that stuff. So it's a that's part
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: of the equation. The other part of the equation is
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: your friction, like you were talking about, and convenience and
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: luxury level of what you want to do and how
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: I think part of that is like each individual and
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: how they feel about that, Like whether a composting toilet
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: or a full toilet that flushes and goes to the outside, Like,
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: that's a different level. You need a full shower inside
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: that you can have full running water like that requires
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: huge volumes of water to on board, great and black
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: and clean water.
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: It's like all of this, this entire episode was set
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: up in order of best for travel to least good.
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: But yet I'm traveling full trailer.
- 1:05:15Speaker 3: Well but you know, and you you should be commended
- 1:05:17Speaker 3: for that, Brian, because you no totally think about it,
- 1:05:20Speaker 3: Like you made a decision to rent your home, your
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: super cool house in Portland and to get on the
- 1:05:27Speaker 3: road with your family and to go experience the things
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: that you love to do and to show your daughter
- 1:05:32Speaker 3: the things that you love to do. And but that's
- 1:05:36Speaker 3: that's why we should be doing these things, if we
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: do them for the right reasons, which for you was
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: like I want to be out in nature. I want
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: to show my family what that means to me, Like
- 1:05:46Speaker 3: that's doing it for the right reasons. If you know,
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: if if you spend a million bucks on an expedition
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: camper and it gets used three times a year, maybe
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: you're not doing it for the right reasons.
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: You know. So maybe me though, if it gets you
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: out three times that you want to on out, maybe
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: it's perfectly okay. You know. You gotta go around, around
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: and around, And the reality is, again it comes down
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: to a number of people and all that. Like think
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: about Graham Bell and his family and how they brought
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: him up in a Defender one thirty with two rooftop
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: tents or one big rooftop tent, Like that's epic, right,
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: Like they forego a lot of comforts but still had
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: that experience. You don't need any of the things we're
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: talking about. And if there's no one answer for everybody,
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: there's so many factors involved in it. I don't want
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: an RV. The thing is falling apart in some ways.
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: I keep fixing it.
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: I spent all weekend fixing he did.
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: He helped me all weekend fixing it. It's and they're
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: little things. It's not like the end of the world
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: because it is a nice RV in terms of RVs,
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: and I take care of my stuff. But I would
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: love to be in an exhibition truck and not be
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: dragging a trailer all over the country like I would
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: love to be. But I picked the right truck to
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: tow the right trailer around. I do eighty over the
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: mountains and don't care. And then iron Hook, don't even
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: air down and go get sunset shots in Moab with
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: this truck on hard trails. It doesn't care. Again, it
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: depends on what you want to do. I want the capability,
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: and I needed the space for the three of us.
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: I know what my wife needs for living, and I
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: knew what my four year old needs to live, and
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: then me for my sanity and full time job and
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: that I had and now freelancing for a lot of people.
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: I need to be able to work late at night
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: as well.
- 1:07:19Speaker 3: Trailer allows me to do that.
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: Has like multiple toy boxes.
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: She does have multiple toy boxes.
- 1:07:25Speaker 3: She's going to be.
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: Five by the time she listens to that.
- 1:07:29Speaker 3: Well, And if you look at the three of us,
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: you're pulling a trailer. You have an expedition camper and
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: I have a truck camper and it's exactly what we
- 1:07:38Speaker 3: each need in order to get outdoors. And like you
- 1:07:41Speaker 3: love my greyhound, loves exactly my earth, but his earth.
- 1:07:46Speaker 3: You have told me for six years how much you
- 1:07:47Speaker 3: love that vehicle, and it gets you out, It gets
- 1:07:49Speaker 3: you outdoors. So I think that's the key to it
- 1:07:52Speaker 3: is buy the right vehicle for yourself. You know, Please
- 1:07:56Speaker 3: don't overspend money on the truck. If you if you've
- 1:07:59Speaker 3: got ten million bucks in the bank and you want
- 1:08:01Speaker 3: to buy an eight hundred thousand dollars expedition camper, that
- 1:08:04Speaker 3: is not a stretch.
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: Yeah, it's not a stretch.
- 1:08:07Speaker 3: So buy what you want, of course, but don't overspend
- 1:08:11Speaker 3: on the vehicle and the camper, which means that you
- 1:08:14Speaker 3: can't experience the travel, the traffic, the purpose. Yeah, so
- 1:08:19Speaker 3: come back to the purpose, you know, get out with
- 1:08:21Speaker 3: your family, get out with the people you love, doing
- 1:08:23Speaker 3: something you love and it surprisingly they all work in
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: their own way.
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: I mean, I still miss the van life and me
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: straight that life is the good life. But is the
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: right answer for now and everybody's got their own modes.
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: Just get out there. It doesn't it doesn't matter if
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: you if you have a way, go adventure and travel.
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: It doesn't have to be full time, doesn't have to
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: be just on the weekend. Do whatever works for whatever
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: the lifestyle situation you are. And again, don't make it
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: a thing. Like everyone always asked, how do you do it?
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: Make it a priority. If it's a priority, If it's
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: your a priority, you can do it. Money matters, sure,
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: but it doesn't like you can. I bought a three
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: hundred thousand mile used van initially and had no money.
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: I would broke. I had no debt, but I had
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: no money, and I hit the road and lived under
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: the poverty line for like six years full time. It
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: was fine. I never left wanting. I got to go
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: do the things I wanted to do barely, but I
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: worked enough to make it happen as I went. And again,
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: it's whatever stage in life you are, get out and
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: do it.
- 1:09:16Speaker 3: Yeah, if you want it bad enough, you can make
- 1:09:18Speaker 3: it happen.
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: Well, hopefully that was helpful everyone.
- 1:09:20Speaker 3: Yeah, we thank you all for listening. We'll talk to
- 1:09:24Speaker 3: you next time. Audios pease
