- 0:00Speaker 1: When you're at your weakest, that's that and you have
- 0:03Speaker 1: an opportunity where you can let the weight crush you,
- 0:05Speaker 1: or you can push through the pain and you can
- 0:08Speaker 1: push through the struggle. And when you push it up,
- 0:10Speaker 1: that's actually you getting stronger.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Hey everyone, Emily a body here. You are listening to
- 0:30Speaker 2: episode three hundred and twenty eight of Hurdle, a wellness
- 0:33Speaker 2: focused podcast where I talk to inspirational people about everything
- 0:37Speaker 2: from their highest highs and toughest moments to essential tips
- 0:40Speaker 2: on how to live a healthier, happier, more motivated life.
- 0:44Speaker 2: We all go through our fair share of hurdles. My
- 0:48Speaker 2: goal through these discussions is to empower you to better
- 0:51Speaker 2: navigate yours and move with intention so that you can
- 0:54Speaker 2: stride towards your own big potential and of course have
- 0:58Speaker 2: some fun along. Okay, I am beyond elated today to
- 1:02Speaker 2: bring you my live podcast from New York City Marathon
- 1:06Speaker 2: week with Olympians Josh Kerr and Shari Hawkins. I had
- 1:11Speaker 2: the opportunity to chat with them at the Brooks Hyperion
- 1:15Speaker 2: House the night before the marathon, and what a special
- 1:19Speaker 2: night it was. In this episode, we talk about everything
- 1:22Speaker 2: from their big wins and how they've gotten through life's
- 1:24Speaker 2: toughest moments to what it's like chasing their dreams in
- 1:28Speaker 2: such a public manner, I really appreciated Josh's sentiments about
- 1:32Speaker 2: hard work and oh my goodness, Shari opening up about
- 1:35Speaker 2: mental health and how she handled a disappointment at this
- 1:38Speaker 2: year's Games was not only beautiful, but really motivates me
- 1:43Speaker 2: to keep on showing up and going after the things
- 1:45Speaker 2: that excite me as well. And again, I cannot reiterate
- 1:49Speaker 2: these are two unbelievable individuals. Shari's track record includes fifteen
- 1:54Speaker 2: medals and to simply be a heptathlete that blows my
- 1:57Speaker 2: mind to be good at the seven different events that
- 2:01Speaker 2: are required.
- 2:02Speaker 3: And then, of course Josh. I mean in twenty twenty one, he.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Set the record for the fastest mile on US soil
- 2:08Speaker 2: and has since earned a bronze medal in the fifteen
- 2:11Speaker 2: hundred at the twenty twenty Olympics and silver at the
- 2:15Speaker 2: Paris Games.
- 2:16Speaker 3: Make sure if you're not yet.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Following along with us on social Yeah, I don't over
- 2:22Speaker 2: and do that. That's over at Fertle Podcast. I am
- 2:24Speaker 2: over at Emily Abodi and we have a newsletter. It
- 2:28Speaker 2: comes out every single Friday. It is free to subscribe
- 2:31Speaker 2: and lands directly in your inbox, bringing so much of
- 2:34Speaker 2: the same inspiration and motivation you love about the show.
- 2:37Speaker 2: To get in on that, click on over to the
- 2:40Speaker 2: show notes. With that, let's get to it. Let's get
- 2:43Speaker 2: to hurdling. Thank you so much for.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Joining me the night before the New York City Marathon.
- 2:51Speaker 2: How are we feeling? I, like many of you, will
- 2:58Speaker 2: be towing the starting line tomorrow.
- 3:00Speaker 3: We will do a hand raise of that very shortly.
- 3:03Speaker 2: But before we get to that, I need to welcome
- 3:06Speaker 2: my two superstar guests to join me up here. So
- 3:11Speaker 2: please welcome Shari Hawkins and a Josh Kerr. Feel free
- 3:25Speaker 2: to get comfy, move your mic to be your new bestie.
- 3:28Speaker 3: It takes a second. We're good. I know.
- 3:31Speaker 2: I had to really get like comfy, like I was
- 3:33Speaker 2: gonna do some karaoke, which I won't do.
- 3:36Speaker 4: I know Josh I may just drink some caffeine before
- 3:39Speaker 4: we came up so he could be as wired as Aya.
- 3:41Speaker 3: So we're ready.
- 3:42Speaker 4: We're ready to put on a show.
- 3:44Speaker 2: We're ready to do it well to Olympians next to me,
- 3:47Speaker 2: Let's give it up. I am going to start just
- 3:56Speaker 2: so all of us have the same baseline and understand
- 3:58Speaker 2: what we're working with with a quick hand raising activity.
- 4:03Speaker 2: First and foremost, raise your hand if you have run
- 4:06Speaker 2: track at any point in your life. Okay, wow, okay,
- 4:11Speaker 2: so that's good intel, right, And then raise your hand
- 4:15Speaker 2: if you.
- 4:16Speaker 3: Are running the marathon tomorrow, less hands.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Yeah, exciting nonetheless, and again, thank you so much if
- 4:26Speaker 2: you're running tomorrow for being with us here this evening.
- 4:29Speaker 2: I hope that once you leave here there are carbs
- 4:33Speaker 2: in your future and an early bedtime. So thanks so
- 4:36Speaker 2: much for coming to spend this evening with us. I
- 4:39Speaker 2: want to kick things off tonight and talk a little
- 4:42Speaker 2: bit about quickly the final for Josh. Josh over the
- 4:47Speaker 2: Summer won the silver in the fifteen hundred meters at
- 4:51Speaker 2: the Olympics.
- 4:55Speaker 3: I was in the STA that night. It was electric.
- 4:59Speaker 2: I feel like it was, without a doubt, the wildest
- 5:02Speaker 2: final I have ever seen. I want to know, firstly,
- 5:06Speaker 2: what was going through your head during the race, and now,
- 5:10Speaker 2: with some time removed from that experience, what do you
- 5:13Speaker 2: think about when you think about that race?
- 5:15Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 5:16Speaker 6: I think you know, taking yourself back to that situation
- 5:18Speaker 6: is always interesting. I think you know, running in front
- 5:21Speaker 6: of eighty six thousand people and you know, obviously millions
- 5:24Speaker 6: of people at home is a high like no other.
- 5:26Speaker 6: But apparently half a can of Celsius gets me to
- 5:30Speaker 6: a similar spot. I feel horrible, but no, I think
- 5:37Speaker 6: you know, you dream up those moments for me. It
- 5:40Speaker 6: was like a huge moment in my career, regardless of
- 5:42Speaker 6: what the result was going to be. So, you know,
- 5:45Speaker 6: being able to qualify and then going through the rounds
- 5:47Speaker 6: and being very present in the moment, I think it's
- 5:50Speaker 6: it can transfer into any big moment in anyone's life.
- 5:53Speaker 6: That one was just for me, and it's you know,
- 5:57Speaker 6: being present and being curious of what comes up with
- 6:00Speaker 6: emotions and with like all the whole experience of walking
- 6:03Speaker 6: in and being in parised with you know, you know,
- 6:06Speaker 6: Brooks by my side and my family there, and yeah,
- 6:09Speaker 6: it was very special. So I was very happy that
- 6:10Speaker 6: I was proud of the performance there and it was
- 6:13Speaker 6: the best Fayondo me at race I could but together
- 6:15Speaker 6: so amazing.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Now I know that you said that the day you
- 6:20Speaker 2: executed your plan A, which was and I'm using your
- 6:24Speaker 2: words to quote unquote keep it easy and sleep through
- 6:28Speaker 2: the first eight hundred meters and then really turn it
- 6:31Speaker 2: on for the remainder sleeping at one point fifty one
- 6:34Speaker 2: and for.
- 6:35Speaker 3: You and I is very different, Like that's that's fine, But.
- 6:39Speaker 2: It's not often that you get to completely execute on
- 6:42Speaker 2: your Plan A. Right, many people in this room can
- 6:45Speaker 2: relate that you might show up to run a marathon
- 6:48Speaker 2: and Plan A isn't what happened. So when it doesn't
- 6:52Speaker 2: go to plan and you have to execute on a
- 6:55Speaker 2: plan B and pivot, I'll start with you, Josh. Talk
- 6:58Speaker 2: to me a little bit about how you do that
- 7:00Speaker 2: and how you kind of reel in those nerves when
- 7:03Speaker 2: things go off the rails.
- 7:04Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 7:05Speaker 6: I think nerves are really special though, because you can
- 7:07Speaker 6: use them to your advantage.
- 7:08Speaker 5: It keeps you really sharp.
- 7:09Speaker 6: And so in the fifteen hundred, we don't have a
- 7:11Speaker 6: bunch of time to think or else we'll we'll end
- 7:14Speaker 6: up gonna be pretty slow because we're just sitting there
- 7:17Speaker 6: thinking like, Okay, what am I gonna do? But I
- 7:21Speaker 6: think the nice thing in the marathon is you're gonna
- 7:23Speaker 6: have your pivot points. You're gonna have your Okay, this
- 7:26Speaker 6: is plan A, Like this isn't going well, Like how
- 7:28Speaker 6: can I how can I save this? Or in a
- 7:30Speaker 6: way that's myself and that I can still be proud
- 7:33Speaker 6: of myself regardless of what the result is. So you
- 7:35Speaker 6: can't be a result orientated. You've got to be process orientated.
- 7:38Speaker 6: So as long as you can go through the process
- 7:40Speaker 6: of that marathon and do the best that you can
- 7:42Speaker 6: through each step, you'll never be disappointed. And I ran
- 7:45Speaker 6: into that a little bit, like you know, I ran
- 7:47Speaker 6: a personal best on a day that was really important
- 7:49Speaker 6: to me, and I said to everyone beforehand, I was like,
- 7:52Speaker 6: if I can run my best race and not make
- 7:54Speaker 6: a mistake, I can never be disappointed. And then I
- 7:57Speaker 6: was disappointed and I was like damn. And everyone was like,
- 8:01Speaker 6: you told us you can't be disappointed, and I was like,
- 8:03Speaker 6: you're right, you are, And that's what it is. Set
- 8:06Speaker 6: up a plan and go and execute as well as
- 8:08Speaker 6: you can, and then whatever the result is, that's the result.
- 8:10Speaker 6: That's the uncontrollable. You just can control the controllables, and
- 8:13Speaker 6: that's your attitude and your effort level in the day,
- 8:15Speaker 6: and I think that can go across the board in
- 8:17Speaker 6: anything that you do.
- 8:18Speaker 1: Something that I always like admire about you is that
- 8:21Speaker 1: like you kind of have the weight of the world
- 8:22Speaker 1: on your shoulders, like you have a lot of people
- 8:24Speaker 1: who expect a lot of great things from you, even
- 8:26Speaker 1: if they don't know who you are at all. And
- 8:28Speaker 1: so when you're doing your warm ups, there's probably a
- 8:30Speaker 1: lot of people who are running who have a lot
- 8:32Speaker 1: of expectations on themselves. They have a specific time, they
- 8:35Speaker 1: have a specific thing, and maybe even like their coaches
- 8:37Speaker 1: are looking for them to have a specific time, and
- 8:39Speaker 1: they have those expectations. When that happens when you're warming up,
- 8:44Speaker 1: and that's in like, that's on your body, it's in
- 8:47Speaker 1: your head, it's in your mind. How do you put
- 8:49Speaker 1: one foot in front of the other and stay into
- 8:51Speaker 1: a space where you can say I want to execute
- 8:53Speaker 1: plan A Like, how do you do that in that space?
- 8:57Speaker 4: Because my thing is like.
- 8:59Speaker 1: I always have people are like, wow, you did it,
- 9:02Speaker 1: and they never expected anything for me. And I was like, okay,
- 9:05Speaker 1: so I have to I have a different avenue that
- 9:08Speaker 1: I have to, you know, go, I have to kind
- 9:09Speaker 1: of try to believe in myself when other people are like,
- 9:11Speaker 1: m can you Oh wow, you did it?
- 9:13Speaker 4: That's crazy. But for you, like you have you have
- 9:16Speaker 4: so many expectations.
- 9:17Speaker 1: And I know that there are people who have they
- 9:19Speaker 1: have the weight of their expectations, What would you say
- 9:21Speaker 1: to them when they have those expectations put on their shoulder,
- 9:24Speaker 1: How to continue to put one foot in front of
- 9:26Speaker 1: the other.
- 9:27Speaker 6: I think the best way to describe that is I
- 9:30Speaker 6: talk a lot of shit, and so I kind of
- 9:33Speaker 6: have to back up what I'm talking about. And you're
- 9:35Speaker 6: just a lovely person and very nice to people. So
- 9:38Speaker 6: everyone's like, like, support you, but a lot of people
- 9:40Speaker 6: dislike me sometimes. So yeah, the pressure is a lot,
- 9:45Speaker 6: but it's it is a privilege. It really is like,
- 9:47Speaker 6: you know, putting yourself in a situation where there is
- 9:49Speaker 6: pressure on your shoulders, You're like like, wow, I've really
- 9:52Speaker 6: made it to this point. All I needs to do is,
- 9:54Speaker 6: you know, I'm not asking my body or mind to
- 9:57Speaker 6: do something that is not already done or it's not
- 9:58Speaker 6: capable of doing.
- 9:59Speaker 5: You have to remind yourself of that is you know.
- 10:01Speaker 6: That's that's what I told myself when I was walking
- 10:03Speaker 6: into the Olympic final stadium, is.
- 10:07Speaker 5: You're you're ready.
- 10:07Speaker 6: First of all, you're ready, but it's also like you
- 10:10Speaker 6: are ready for the result that's going.
- 10:12Speaker 5: To come your way, just regardless.
- 10:14Speaker 6: And so that's that's kind of how you just got
- 10:17Speaker 6: to simplify things get complicated. Your mind will always run,
- 10:20Speaker 6: it will always be like focusing on that next thing,
- 10:23Speaker 6: like all this, like all these negative viaes. But once
- 10:26Speaker 6: you once you kind of catch it. You just catch
- 10:28Speaker 6: it going this way or like the negative side, and
- 10:30Speaker 6: you catch you going I see you, I get it.
- 10:32Speaker 5: But we're here. We're here right now.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Just having that awareness, like always being aware of your
- 10:36Speaker 1: thoughts and when they go negative, being like nice, yeah go.
- 10:39Speaker 5: Over here and something else.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Yeah, that's good, and just recognizing that you are experiencing
- 10:44Speaker 2: your thoughts, but you have the opportunity then to react
- 10:46Speaker 2: to your thoughts. Right you are not your thoughts. I
- 10:50Speaker 2: could just leave if you guys want to do this.
- 10:54Speaker 3: That's here.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Josh and I Aron on tour together. So this is
- 10:58Speaker 1: like like we every day. I feel like I learned
- 11:01Speaker 1: something every time we're like hanging out, I'm like, dang,
- 11:03Speaker 1: they're super cool.
- 11:04Speaker 3: I will just be on the tour with you.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Honestly at this point now, I know that pivoting is
- 11:10Speaker 2: something that you know a lot about, Shari. We all
- 11:13Speaker 2: saw the video, as you put it, of your heart
- 11:17Speaker 2: breaking in real time from the Olympics this year, after
- 11:21Speaker 2: no hiding at the second event, talk.
- 11:24Speaker 3: To us a little bit about how you.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Conquered that hurdle and showed up again despite not getting
- 11:32Speaker 2: the result that you wanted early on.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Sure, So for anybody who doesn't know, like exactly what's
- 11:38Speaker 1: going on, Essentially, I do the hyptathlon, so I do
- 11:40Speaker 1: seven events. The second event is the high jump. It's
- 11:42Speaker 1: actually my baby, it's my best events where I get
- 11:45Speaker 1: all my points. I came in at a very conservative height,
- 11:48Speaker 1: but for a lot of different reasons, my body didn't
- 11:52Speaker 1: have it that day. I had a wonderful warm up
- 11:54Speaker 1: and everything was looking good, but I know, hidd and
- 11:57Speaker 1: when you have no height, you get zero points in
- 11:59Speaker 1: that event. Essentially, I was being told, congratulations, you're in
- 12:02Speaker 1: last place forever, like you're gonna take last place.
- 12:05Speaker 4: Have a good time.
- 12:05Speaker 1: A lot of times people when that happens, you're in
- 12:07Speaker 1: last place, you're out. You know, you just you leave,
- 12:10Speaker 1: you go home, you cry. I did do that. I
- 12:12Speaker 1: did go home and cry for a long time. I
- 12:14Speaker 1: had a lot of time to think about it and
- 12:16Speaker 1: a lot of time to be really upset about it.
- 12:18Speaker 1: But I also I had to kind of like look
- 12:20Speaker 1: within myself in the space.
- 12:22Speaker 4: And really find my why.
- 12:26Speaker 1: I had to learn a long time ago that I
- 12:29Speaker 1: didn't do track because I needed to prove my worth.
- 12:33Speaker 4: I did track because I loved it. I also have a.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Very rare opportunity of having two times previous trying to
- 12:42Speaker 1: make the Olympic team and having to stay home. And
- 12:45Speaker 1: I can only imagine I was so nervous in the
- 12:49Speaker 1: weeks following up into the Olympic trials and making the
- 12:51Speaker 1: Olympic team, and you even imagine being fourth place and
- 12:55Speaker 1: staying home.
- 12:56Speaker 4: I can imagine doing it.
- 12:58Speaker 1: And then me watching myself stay home, and then watching
- 13:02Speaker 1: myself go to the Olympics, potentially seeing somebody go to
- 13:04Speaker 1: the Olympics when I'm at home, and then dropping out
- 13:07Speaker 1: and not finishing the competition. I had such a rare
- 13:10Speaker 1: opportunity to be able to stay on an Olympics stage
- 13:14Speaker 1: and be on an Olympic stage, and I realized that
- 13:16Speaker 1: there were so many bigger reasons. I had the opportunity
- 13:20Speaker 1: to grow in real time on the Olympic stage and
- 13:24Speaker 1: push through. Like I always say, when you're at your weakest,
- 13:28Speaker 1: that's that when like imagine you're bench pressing and you're
- 13:31Speaker 1: at the weakest right here, and you have an opportunity
- 13:33Speaker 1: where you can let the weight crush you, or you
- 13:35Speaker 1: can push through the pain and you can push through
- 13:38Speaker 1: the struggle. And when you push it up, that's actually
- 13:40Speaker 1: you getting stronger. And I had the opportunity to be
- 13:43Speaker 1: at my lowest and get stronger in real time on
- 13:46Speaker 1: an Olympic stage in front of millions of people, and
- 13:50Speaker 1: I kept telling myself, if you continue to put your
- 13:53Speaker 1: best foot for it, I didn't want to just show
- 13:55Speaker 1: up and be sad and cry and like all that
- 13:57Speaker 1: kind of stuff.
- 13:58Speaker 4: I wanted to show up as.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Me, as the girl who just who loves what she
- 14:03Speaker 1: does and wants to get the crowd involved and wants
- 14:06Speaker 1: to be happy and wants to do well. Honestly, I
- 14:09Speaker 1: work so hard, why not keep a put on a
- 14:11Speaker 1: good performance? And I kept telling myself the pain that
- 14:15Speaker 1: you're feeling, the sadness that you're feeling in the broken
- 14:17Speaker 1: heartedness you're doing right now, it will go away if
- 14:21Speaker 1: you put your best effort through. And I always, like
- 14:25Speaker 1: I've said after that, like you never know how truly
- 14:28Speaker 1: strong you are until you get to a space where
- 14:30Speaker 1: you want to give up and you choose to fight instead,
- 14:34Speaker 1: and being able to do that was I felt like
- 14:36Speaker 1: an honor to be able to have that journey and
- 14:40Speaker 1: be able to push through, and looking back on it now,
- 14:42Speaker 1: I think that that was exactly what was supposed to happen.
- 14:45Speaker 3: Yeah. No, I mean it's so impressive.
- 14:46Speaker 2: And seriously, as you were asking earlier of Josh, like,
- 14:50Speaker 2: how is it that you show up when you have
- 14:51Speaker 2: all these expectations on yourself? You did the same thing, right,
- 14:54Speaker 2: You just said that all of these people were watching you,
- 14:57Speaker 2: but you chose to show up because you know your why,
- 15:00Speaker 2: and that is so so special. So I do want
- 15:05Speaker 2: to ask you about then, what is your why? What
- 15:07Speaker 2: is it about the heptathlon such a unique event, right
- 15:11Speaker 2: that keeps you coming back time and time again.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Yeah, So I think like one of the things that
- 15:15Speaker 1: I really value is I am so curious about how
- 15:19Speaker 1: I can improve in life in general, and I think
- 15:22Speaker 1: that the opportunity of me personally no offense to Josh
- 15:27Speaker 1: not being incredibly fantastic, no offense you're incredibly fantastic gets crazy.
- 15:35Speaker 1: One time he was like, oh, yeah, we're going for
- 15:37Speaker 1: world records, and I was like, yeah, I can't relate so,
- 15:43Speaker 1: but like something about being like I mean, in my
- 15:45Speaker 1: personal mind, I'm swear I'm not trying to be a
- 15:47Speaker 1: hater to myself, but like somewhat of a good athlete,
- 15:50Speaker 1: but like average and really being able to build brick
- 15:54Speaker 1: by brick. There's something in my heart that like, I
- 15:58Speaker 1: love it, and I love watching myself get better and
- 16:00Speaker 1: having seven events that I can continue to improve on.
- 16:03Speaker 4: It really like.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Brings me so much joy and I feel like I'm
- 16:06Speaker 1: a kid playing on like the playground when I'm doing
- 16:09Speaker 1: my sport. And so I absolutely I love it. I
- 16:11Speaker 1: honestly I love training. I don't like competing that much.
- 16:14Speaker 1: It's like really stressful, but I love to train and
- 16:18Speaker 1: I love to get better.
- 16:19Speaker 4: I love it. It's amazing.
- 16:21Speaker 2: I need to hype you up for a quick second
- 16:22Speaker 2: on behalf of everyone in this room because they are
- 16:25Speaker 2: listening to you unintentionally slightly intentionally shit talk yourself. By
- 16:29Speaker 2: the way, Brokes, this is not an explicit podcast, like
- 16:32Speaker 2: we have just decided on that as a collective unit
- 16:35Speaker 2: up here. You went to the Olympics one of the
- 16:41Speaker 2: top three Americans.
- 16:45Speaker 3: Thank you so.
- 16:47Speaker 2: Even on the days where you aren't feeling so shiny,
- 16:52Speaker 2: and so stellar. I need you to remind yourself that
- 16:55Speaker 2: you're a big effing deal.
- 16:57Speaker 1: Okay, Well, and the thing is is I think that
- 17:00Speaker 1: I honor the hard work that I've put in, and
- 17:03Speaker 1: I love that, Like I very much always say that
- 17:07Speaker 1: I work hard now so that future me can think
- 17:09Speaker 1: me later. And I very much want to go back
- 17:12Speaker 1: to my past and say thank you, thank you for
- 17:13Speaker 1: not giving up, thank you for keep working hard, and
- 17:15Speaker 1: thank you for believing in yourself when nobody else did.
- 17:18Speaker 1: But also I really like to I like to emphasize
- 17:21Speaker 1: that because I like to say, like, if for some
- 17:22Speaker 1: reason you don't feel like you're a like a like
- 17:27Speaker 1: a superstar, like I promise you can do it.
- 17:29Speaker 4: If I can do it, you can do it.
- 17:30Speaker 1: And that's you know, That's something that I always want
- 17:33Speaker 1: to emphasize, is like if truly, if I can do it,
- 17:35Speaker 1: you can do it.
- 17:36Speaker 3: We love that. We love a good sense of self belief.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Speaking of self belief, Josh, over time, your times actually
- 17:45Speaker 2: have gotten faster, not just because people are talking on
- 17:49Speaker 2: social media, but also because you've been You've been putting
- 17:53Speaker 2: in the work, right, So I want to know a
- 17:56Speaker 2: little bit about what the secret sauce is right, What
- 17:59Speaker 2: is it or what would you attribute your success over
- 18:03Speaker 2: the last four years, leveling up from your bronze in
- 18:07Speaker 2: the previous Olympics to silver in this Olympics. Also have
- 18:10Speaker 2: to call out twenty twenty three world champ. That doesn't
- 18:13Speaker 2: just happen because you want it right. That takes a
- 18:15Speaker 2: sense of self belief and a lot of hard work.
- 18:17Speaker 2: So talk to us about what the secret sauce is
- 18:19Speaker 2: that's helped you level up over the last four years.
- 18:23Speaker 6: I think, you know, I signed with Brooks back in
- 18:24Speaker 6: twenty eighteen and I didn't win my first medal till
- 18:28Speaker 6: twenty twenty one, which was like obviously through COVID and things,
- 18:31Speaker 6: it was like.
- 18:31Speaker 5: A long process.
- 18:32Speaker 6: But I just think the long term view for me,
- 18:36Speaker 6: like from you know, my coach Danny MACKI like, I'm
- 18:39Speaker 6: part of the Brooks Beast, which is a Brooks sponsor team.
- 18:43Speaker 6: It was like, we are not in a rush to
- 18:45Speaker 6: be the best in the world. We're gonna get there.
- 18:46Speaker 6: We're gonna trust that we're gonna get there, and you know,
- 18:48Speaker 6: by brick, step by step, we're gonna get there. And
- 18:50Speaker 6: so after get my first medal, it was like okay,
- 18:53Speaker 6: like we are good enough, and then it was like,
- 18:55Speaker 6: how can we go from world class to world champion.
- 18:58Speaker 6: That's one of the hardest steps in the world to do,
- 19:01Speaker 6: and it just takes time. I've not been in a
- 19:03Speaker 6: rush at any part of my career, and I think
- 19:06Speaker 6: if you're in a rush, then you're going to run
- 19:07Speaker 6: into injuries and problems. And I haven't run into injuries
- 19:10Speaker 6: or problems because we've had that long term view and
- 19:13Speaker 6: not doing things that my body's not capable of doing.
- 19:15Speaker 6: So yeah, it was mostly that, just kind of that
- 19:18Speaker 6: forward planning. It kind of sucks, like when you're you know,
- 19:21Speaker 6: twenty eighteen, you're like, okay, we want you to win
- 19:23Speaker 6: in twenty twenty four.
- 19:24Speaker 5: I was like, that sounds like a long time.
- 19:30Speaker 6: Yeah, it's like I've already been in part like I
- 19:33Speaker 6: started the sport when I was eight, and it's like, okay,
- 19:36Speaker 6: we'll wait till we're twenty six.
- 19:37Speaker 5: That's fine.
- 19:39Speaker 6: But again, like it's one of those things where this
- 19:41Speaker 6: sport is so crazy where you do something today and
- 19:43Speaker 6: it's going to help and you know a year's time.
- 19:46Speaker 5: That seems wild.
- 19:47Speaker 6: But it's just that long term view and it's kind
- 19:49Speaker 6: of the way that I've always ran with my careers.
- 19:51Speaker 5: I'm not in a rush. I'm going to get there.
- 19:53Speaker 6: You know, it's the slow train, but it's going to
- 19:55Speaker 6: get there the slow train.
- 19:56Speaker 2: Besides time, though, if we had to dial it up
- 20:00Speaker 2: another level, right and learn either about prioritizing things like
- 20:05Speaker 2: sleep or nutrition. I know you work with a nutritionist
- 20:08Speaker 2: with the Brooks Beasts. Would you say that there's a
- 20:11Speaker 2: specific thing that you've stressed more as of late that's
- 20:14Speaker 2: giving you that extra edge?
- 20:16Speaker 5: Yeah, I would say nutrition.
- 20:17Speaker 6: I hired a chef last year and she travels with
- 20:20Speaker 6: me and and does all that stuff for me, And
- 20:23Speaker 6: so I don't I try and minimize my thinking.
- 20:25Speaker 5: Not that I'm not a good thinker.
- 20:29Speaker 6: But like a lot of people are much better at
- 20:32Speaker 6: thinking than I am.
- 20:35Speaker 3: Yeah, so much regrets.
- 20:38Speaker 1: It, honestly, Like that's actually there's actually like a lot
- 20:41Speaker 1: of intelligence behind that.
- 20:42Speaker 4: Like like interestingly enough.
- 20:44Speaker 5: Intelligence sounds better than thinking.
- 20:45Speaker 1: No, no, because I'm telling you, like, if my coach
- 20:49Speaker 1: were here on this mic right now, she'd be like
- 20:51Speaker 1: tell Shari that because she'd literally my coach would tell
- 20:54Speaker 1: me every two minutes like stop thinking right now, and
- 20:57Speaker 1: like I'm a textbook overthinker.
- 20:59Speaker 4: And that is probably why it took me.
- 21:02Speaker 1: It takes me so long to get through things because
- 21:05Speaker 1: instead of just letting myself like letting myself do something,
- 21:08Speaker 1: I always have to try to think my way through it.
- 21:10Speaker 1: So as much as it sounds like I know exactly
- 21:13Speaker 1: what you're talking about, and I'm also like hashtag jealous
- 21:16Speaker 1: that you have that ability to do that, but it's
- 21:18Speaker 1: actually like quite an intelligent thing to be able to
- 21:22Speaker 1: turn your brain off when it comes to performance, because
- 21:24Speaker 1: that's the way that you get into that flow state.
- 21:26Speaker 4: You can never think your way into it.
- 21:28Speaker 6: Yeah, it's just like you just have to get into
- 21:29Speaker 6: your lane and you're like, okay, I'm great at running,
- 21:31Speaker 6: and so just stick your head down and do that,
- 21:33Speaker 6: and then everyone around you is kind of like your parents, like, yeah,
- 21:39Speaker 6: it takes a village.
- 21:40Speaker 5: Real helicopter parents kind of thing. So I think, I
- 21:43Speaker 5: think that's really it.
- 21:44Speaker 6: You know, you know, we're pretty dialed in with everything
- 21:46Speaker 6: that we do, but it takes time to get to
- 21:48Speaker 6: where we were at.
- 21:49Speaker 5: And I worked really hard.
- 21:50Speaker 6: We have a nutritionist and he's amazing, but it was
- 21:53Speaker 6: one of those things where I was like, I don't
- 21:55Speaker 6: really want to count my macros and I'm you know,
- 21:58Speaker 6: I'm not grey at it and takes a lot of
- 21:59Speaker 6: mental like okay, like how many how many chicken breasts
- 22:02Speaker 6: do I have to have this time? You know, it's
- 22:04Speaker 6: it's kind of frustrating. So you know, now I don't
- 22:06Speaker 6: need to count. That's awesome, But yeah, I think that's
- 22:10Speaker 6: like a big thing for me. And you know, obviously
- 22:12Speaker 6: like as a brand like our you know, our shoes
- 22:15Speaker 6: and our spikes have got a lot better, so it's
- 22:16Speaker 6: much easier to run faster and come off a workouts
- 22:20Speaker 6: a lot quicker as well.
- 22:21Speaker 5: And you know my Injurie rates super low.
- 22:22Speaker 6: So yeah, it's it's it's a real comment like accumulation
- 22:25Speaker 6: of things.
- 22:28Speaker 2: Taking a break from today's episode to give some love
- 22:31Speaker 2: to my sponsor at Element. Element helps anyone stay hydrated
- 22:35Speaker 2: without the sugar and other dodgy ingredients found in popular
- 22:39Speaker 2: electrolyte and sports drinks. It's electrolyte drink mix with everything
- 22:44Speaker 2: you need and nothing you don't. For me, right now,
- 22:48Speaker 2: I am obsessing over their chocolate metally. It includes chocolate mint,
- 22:52Speaker 2: chocolate chi and chocolate raspberry. You can mix it up
- 22:56Speaker 2: with hot water do enjoy on its own on chocolate anyone,
- 23:00Speaker 2: or you can also add it to your favorite recipes.
- 23:03Speaker 2: Have a stick of chocolate mint in your coffee. It
- 23:06Speaker 2: makes for a mean mintymocha. I feel it super important
- 23:11Speaker 2: to remind you that electrolytes are critical and electrolyte deficiency
- 23:15Speaker 2: are imbalance. It can cause a lot of problems annoyances
- 23:18Speaker 2: like headaches, cramps, fatigue, brain fog, and weakness.
- 23:22Speaker 3: And that's not just if you're out doing something athletic right.

- 24:02Speaker 2: be remiss not to go into the avenue of self talk,
- 24:06Speaker 2: especially because there are so many marathoners in this room
- 24:09Speaker 2: right now. Something that you both have had to work
- 24:12Speaker 2: on a fair amount, I am sure, especially performing in
- 24:16Speaker 2: such high pressure situations. How do you flip that self
- 24:21Speaker 2: talk to be positive when those negative thoughts are creeping in? Sorry,
- 24:25Speaker 2: I'll start.
- 24:25Speaker 1: With you, okay, So like the first thing that came
- 24:28Speaker 1: to mind for me specifically, and Josh touched on this
- 24:30Speaker 1: a little bit earlier when he talked about like being
- 24:33Speaker 1: aware of your thoughts and then shifting them right. For example,
- 24:37Speaker 1: my eight hundred, I was actually this year the most
- 24:39Speaker 1: fit I've ever been. I had been working harder on
- 24:42Speaker 1: the eight hundred than I had ever worked in my
- 24:46Speaker 1: entire life.
- 24:47Speaker 4: But also there was something missing.
- 24:49Speaker 1: When I would compete, all of a sudden, my brain
- 24:52Speaker 1: would just like not do what it needed to do
- 24:54Speaker 1: and I couldn't control it and I would just die,
- 24:58Speaker 1: and I was like, I don't know what's going on.
- 25:00Speaker 1: So when it was time for the Olympic trials, I
- 25:01Speaker 1: had quite a bit of I did such so well
- 25:06Speaker 1: in my other events that I had quite uh buffer.
- 25:09Speaker 4: I had quite a buffer, thank you.
- 25:12Speaker 1: But however, if I were to have done what I
- 25:15Speaker 1: had been doing that year in the in the eight hundred,
- 25:17Speaker 1: I wasn't going to make the team. That's how rough
- 25:20Speaker 1: it had been so there was so much what if
- 25:23Speaker 1: I mess all of this up right now?
- 25:25Speaker 4: So much of it that it's crazy.
- 25:29Speaker 1: I remember I read this book one time that said, like,
- 25:31Speaker 1: do you think Olympians are sitting there crying? And I
- 25:34Speaker 1: was like, I hope so, because I I've been doing
- 25:39Speaker 1: a lot of that lately.
- 25:40Speaker 4: And then I learned, yeah, it's they do.
- 25:41Speaker 1: Olympians cry a lot, and they are stressful and they
- 25:44Speaker 1: doubt themselves, and that's okay. But I remember being into
- 25:48Speaker 1: this space where I was so I was so scared.
- 25:50Speaker 1: I've never been so scared in my entire life before
- 25:53Speaker 1: the eight hundred, and there was just nothing but doubt, nothing,
- 25:57Speaker 1: but I'm going to mess it up. And then I
- 25:59Speaker 1: finally had this aha moment where I was like, Shari,
- 26:02Speaker 1: there's nothing wrong with you for feeling this way. There's
- 26:04Speaker 1: probably a lot of people who are feeling the exact
- 26:06Speaker 1: same way as you are right now. But what you
- 26:08Speaker 1: have to do is you have to hold space for
- 26:11Speaker 1: your success. So even in the midst of I can't
- 26:15Speaker 1: do it, I'm gonna mess it up, you have to
- 26:17Speaker 1: say I can, I'm ready, I've trained, I can, I'm ready,
- 26:23Speaker 1: I've trained, I can, and doing that made this like
- 26:27Speaker 1: interesting thought process where when I had been doing all
- 26:32Speaker 1: of my training before, I had been doing them like
- 26:33Speaker 1: two hundred meters at a time, right with thirty seconds
- 26:36Speaker 1: recovery all of that, and I realized, huh, I'm running
- 26:40Speaker 1: eight hundred meters or running two laps and I can
- 26:44Speaker 1: do that. And just that one little flip of holding space,
- 26:48Speaker 1: it started changing my thought process and changing my reality.
- 26:54Speaker 4: So when it comes to it's okay if you.
- 26:57Speaker 1: Doubt yourself, if you feel scared, if you don't think
- 26:59Speaker 1: you can do it, even if you're in mid run,
- 27:02Speaker 1: you're at the sixteen mile mark and you're like, there's
- 27:04Speaker 1: no way, Pa, I'm not on pace.
- 27:06Speaker 4: There's no way I'm gonna be able to do it.
- 27:07Speaker 4: I'm just gonna give up.
- 27:09Speaker 1: But what if you also held space for your success
- 27:12Speaker 1: and for that time that you're looking for and being like, yeah,
- 27:15Speaker 1: I'm a little behind, but I've got kind of a
- 27:17Speaker 1: long time and you never know if I'm going to
- 27:19Speaker 1: hit that second wind. So what if I continue pushing forward?
- 27:22Speaker 1: And what if you keep doing it? And so it's
- 27:24Speaker 1: very similar to what Josh was saying in that you
- 27:26Speaker 1: have to be aware of your thoughts but just being
- 27:28Speaker 1: able to hold space for your success can change everything.
- 27:32Speaker 1: And all of a sudden, I went from having the
- 27:34Speaker 1: worst eight hundred times that I've been getting to getting
- 27:36Speaker 1: a nine year pebe in the eight hundred and qualifying
- 27:39Speaker 1: for the Olympics.
- 27:44Speaker 2: I'm ready, I've trained, I can. I think that's a
- 27:47Speaker 2: lot of people's new mantra for tomorrow. Yeah, Josh, you
- 27:50Speaker 2: gave us a little insight into your thought process and
- 27:52Speaker 2: how you show up when you get on the line.
- 27:54Speaker 3: But anything else that you want to add, I think.
- 27:57Speaker 6: You know, it's such an emotional rollercoaster in Maras and
- 28:00Speaker 6: especially like you know, when we ran the half, our
- 28:02Speaker 6: motto was pockets of pain.
- 28:05Speaker 3: Gosh.
- 28:08Speaker 6: So the thing about a pocket of pain that you
- 28:10Speaker 6: will find out tomorrow is you can build yourself out
- 28:13Speaker 6: of a pocket. It's just small moments where it's like
- 28:16Speaker 6: like where it just feels impossible for that second, but
- 28:18Speaker 6: it's just it's just for that moment, and it's like,
- 28:21Speaker 6: you know, they talk about like breaking through like walls
- 28:23Speaker 6: and all these things, but we like to use pockets
- 28:26Speaker 6: because it just feels nice to be like I'm just
- 28:28Speaker 6: in a pocket right now, like just let me get through.
- 28:30Speaker 5: This pocket, I'll be fine.
- 28:31Speaker 6: And then it was one of those things where I
- 28:34Speaker 6: ran with two of my teammates for a half last
- 28:36Speaker 6: year in San Diego, and whenever someone was having a pocket,
- 28:39Speaker 6: we just chucked them, you know, on the shoulder, and
- 28:42Speaker 6: we just kept pushing through. And it's just those moments.
- 28:45Speaker 6: There's gonna be highs, there's gonna be lows. In the
- 28:47Speaker 6: best races you're gonna have, it's gonna be highs and lows.
- 28:49Speaker 6: And it's how you work through those lows and how
- 28:51Speaker 6: you keep mentally stable through those highs and not.
- 28:54Speaker 5: Go too early. But for us, that's that's how we
- 28:56Speaker 5: kind of work through them.
- 28:57Speaker 3: It's breaking it up into little doables as well.
- 28:59Speaker 2: Right, it's like, okay, if I can in running, if
- 29:02Speaker 2: we're talking about that, run to the next lamp post,
- 29:05Speaker 2: or if I can run this mile one, I can
- 29:07Speaker 2: run to the next aid station. Right you get there,
- 29:09Speaker 2: and then it's like, okay, well I persisted up to
- 29:12Speaker 2: this point, so I can keep persisting. Just reminding yourself
- 29:16Speaker 2: what it is exactly that you're capable of, which is
- 29:18Speaker 2: so special. Speaking of persisting, I loved the TikTok that
- 29:22Speaker 2: you posted at the end of August when you went
- 29:25Speaker 2: to go reconquer the height that failed you, or that
- 29:31Speaker 2: you quote unquote failed, although that's arguable at the Olympics,
- 29:36Speaker 2: Do you want to tell them a little bit about
- 29:38Speaker 2: that TikTok that you posted and why it was so
- 29:40Speaker 2: integral to you moving forward?
- 29:42Speaker 4: Sure?
- 29:42Speaker 1: So it's so interesting about the height that I missed.
- 29:47Speaker 1: I can clear from a two step, I can clear
- 29:48Speaker 1: it from a three step. It's a very easy bar
- 29:50Speaker 1: for me. But interestingly enough, I went to practice and
- 29:53Speaker 1: was just warming up and I all of a sudden
- 29:55Speaker 1: I couldn't clear it. And I was like, excuse me, ma'am.
- 29:59Speaker 1: You cleared this in high Like what how dare you right?
- 30:01Speaker 1: And so I thought it would be really interesting to
- 30:05Speaker 1: just document me overcoming it, because sometimes you do just
- 30:09Speaker 1: have to understand that you're in a mental block currently
- 30:12Speaker 1: and it doesn't.
- 30:13Speaker 4: Mean like it.
- 30:14Speaker 1: It didn't mean that all of a sudden I couldn't
- 30:16Speaker 1: high jump. I was in a pocket of pain mentally,
- 30:20Speaker 1: and and so yeah, and I just honestly it took
- 30:25Speaker 1: me like quite a lot. And there was actually one
- 30:28Speaker 1: time I didn't put this. We didn't have this on film,
- 30:30Speaker 1: but I did throw the high jump bart at my
- 30:32Speaker 1: videographer who was there, and he was like, well, first
- 30:36Speaker 1: of all, what the heck? And second of all, I
- 30:38Speaker 1: didn't get that, so that's too bad. And I was like,
- 30:41Speaker 1: that's okay, and and it was very like silly but
- 30:44Speaker 1: also like serious. But then finally, you know, like I
- 30:47Speaker 1: finally cleared it, and then I was like, you know what,
- 30:49Speaker 1: I have to do this the second time just to
- 30:51Speaker 1: get over it. And I cleared it for my second
- 30:53Speaker 1: time in a row, and it was just one of
- 30:54Speaker 1: those things where it was like, Okay, sometimes you just
- 30:58Speaker 1: have mental blocks, but that's all they are and they
- 31:00Speaker 1: don't mean anything. They don't mean that from now on,
- 31:03Speaker 1: I'm never going to high jump. Well again, doesn't mean
- 31:06Speaker 1: that I'm not a good high jumper. It just meant
- 31:08Speaker 1: like there was something going on. You adjusted, you move forward,
- 31:12Speaker 1: and you pushed through your own mental blocks. They don't
- 31:15Speaker 1: just happen physically. They have molementally, but they don't mean anything.
- 31:19Speaker 2: Yeah, No, if anything, when they happen, it's an opportunity
- 31:23Speaker 2: for you to learn about yourself so that you can
- 31:25Speaker 2: then implement that to your point moving forward. Just like
- 31:28Speaker 2: the difficult moments, right, the good moments are great. Don't
- 31:31Speaker 2: get me wrong. We love winning, we love when things
- 31:34Speaker 2: go right. But it's the moments that are tough. It's
- 31:36Speaker 2: the moments where you feel like you're down and out.
- 31:39Speaker 3: Those are the moments that you learn something.
- 31:41Speaker 2: So now, coming off of that experience, Shari, what would
- 31:45Speaker 2: you say has been your biggest takeaway moving forward as
- 31:48Speaker 2: you continue on up to the next chapter.
- 31:51Speaker 1: So my sports psychologist and I see two of them,
- 31:55Speaker 1: it's like it's like crazy, like you know how, like
- 31:57Speaker 1: they're just like, oh my gosh, like like olympian, like
- 32:00Speaker 1: they're just mentally well, we have help, like there, yeah,
- 32:04Speaker 1: there's so so much help. But my sports like always
- 32:08Speaker 1: talks about how resistance is the only place to grow.
- 32:11Speaker 1: It's the same thing like I said in the weight room,
- 32:14Speaker 1: like when you actually put resistance on the bar, that's
- 32:16Speaker 1: the only way that you can grow. And the only
- 32:17Speaker 1: way you're actually growing is by tearing your muscles just
- 32:20Speaker 1: a little bit so that they can grow bigger. And
- 32:23Speaker 1: the brain is literally a muscle, and so being able
- 32:26Speaker 1: every single day that you give yourself positive reinforcement or
- 32:29Speaker 1: when you're meeting that resistance and you're pushing against it,
- 32:32Speaker 1: you're literally training your brain to be a little bit stronger,
- 32:35Speaker 1: and it's the only place that we can get bigger.
- 32:38Speaker 1: And it's so cool because ever since my experience at
- 32:42Speaker 1: the Olympics. At first, you know, I just I couldn't
- 32:46Speaker 1: see why this was happening. I was just in such
- 32:49Speaker 1: a good spot. I was so grateful to be there.
- 32:52Speaker 1: It was my first time not really having anxiety when
- 32:54Speaker 1: I was competing. I was just I was so ready,
- 32:56Speaker 1: and I was so prepared, and I was so everything
- 32:58Speaker 1: was so well, and then happened. But then I started
- 33:02Speaker 1: meeting people and hearing their stories. I had a woman
- 33:06Speaker 1: come up to me and tell me about her story,
- 33:07Speaker 1: her her story of her fighting through cancer and cancer treatments,
- 33:13Speaker 1: and how she was actually ready to call it with
- 33:15Speaker 1: the cancer treatments because she just couldn't do it anymore
- 33:18Speaker 1: until she saw my video talking about how we can
- 33:20Speaker 1: do hard things even when we feel broken inside. And
- 33:24Speaker 1: she told me, like I fought and I keep fighting,
- 33:27Speaker 1: and like, I feel really unworthy to be able to
- 33:30Speaker 1: be somebody who is giving people who are fighting a
- 33:33Speaker 1: much harder battle than I am.
- 33:36Speaker 4: To me, she feels more like a hero.
- 33:37Speaker 1: But to be able to hear their stories and hear
- 33:41Speaker 1: that's whey, Like I think so hard about you know,
- 33:44Speaker 1: what my true why is and what my true hope
- 33:47Speaker 1: is for why even start social media or why I
- 33:51Speaker 1: wanted to build a community, and it was really just
- 33:54Speaker 1: to be able to like inspire people to if I
- 33:57Speaker 1: can do it, you can do it, and to be
- 33:59Speaker 1: able to have that like I have learned that sometimes
- 34:03Speaker 1: things are bigger than us, you know, and sometimes the
- 34:05Speaker 1: things that feel so random and feel so hard and
- 34:08Speaker 1: why did this happen was actually it wasn't for us,
- 34:13Speaker 1: it was for other people, and it was meant to happen.
- 34:16Speaker 1: And one thing that I have learned and I will
- 34:19Speaker 1: do my best to take it forward, is to understand
- 34:23Speaker 1: that everything in life happens for us or for others,
- 34:27Speaker 1: and it's bigger. Our life is bigger than us, you know,
- 34:29Speaker 1: And we have to show up as our best. And
- 34:32Speaker 1: that doesn't necessarily mean to be the best, It just
- 34:35Speaker 1: we I don't know anybody, including myself, a personal best,
- 34:39Speaker 1: but I do owe it to myself to show up
- 34:41Speaker 1: as my personal best. And I think moving forward, that's
- 34:44Speaker 1: really something that I've learned.
- 34:46Speaker 2: That's really beautiful and things for sharing that story when
- 34:49Speaker 2: you talked about how do you get stronger? Right, it's
- 34:52Speaker 2: using that resistance. How do you get stronger? You give
- 34:56Speaker 2: your muscles something to push up against. How does your
- 34:58Speaker 2: will get stronger? You give your will something to push
- 35:01Speaker 2: up against. And so that's exactly what you dealt with.
- 35:04Speaker 2: But not the first time that you've had to deal
- 35:06Speaker 2: with difficulty. You dealt with some really difficult injuries leading
- 35:11Speaker 2: into the Olympics that you didn't get to go to
- 35:15Speaker 2: talk to us a little bit about your injury experience
- 35:18Speaker 2: and perhaps offer some advice to anyone who might be
- 35:22Speaker 2: going through it right now.
- 35:23Speaker 4: Yeah, So injuries are a nightmare.
- 35:25Speaker 1: I broke all of my I like tore every ligament
- 35:30Speaker 1: in my ankle five days before the World Championships in Budapest.
- 35:34Speaker 1: I'm not in Budapest, sorry, in Doha in twenty nineteen.
- 35:38Speaker 1: I decided to still go because it was my first
- 35:40Speaker 1: time ever making World Championships, and I was like, if
- 35:43Speaker 1: it doesn't go, like I remember when I did it,
- 35:45Speaker 1: I didn't want to look, and I was like, if
- 35:47Speaker 1: my bone isn't showing, I'm still going to go. And
- 35:49Speaker 1: I looked my bone wasn't showing, and I was like, Okay,
- 35:52Speaker 1: my ankle was about this big, but I was like,
- 35:54Speaker 1: I'm still going, I'm still going, I'm still going. I
- 35:56Speaker 1: actually got in at twenty fourth in the world and
- 35:59Speaker 1: I ended up taking twelfth in the world. When I
- 36:01Speaker 1: was there on that broken ankle, and I didn't tell
- 36:03Speaker 1: anybody because I was like, I.
- 36:05Speaker 4: Didn't want anybody to tell me I couldn't go.
- 36:08Speaker 1: And so it was really cool for me because as
- 36:10Speaker 1: much as I wished I would have been healthy and
- 36:13Speaker 1: been able to maybe even do better, there was something
- 36:15Speaker 1: inside of me. It was the first time I felt
- 36:18Speaker 1: like I had that imposter syndrome right, like I barely
- 36:21Speaker 1: made it.
- 36:21Speaker 4: They take twenty four.
- 36:22Speaker 1: I made it at twenty fourth, So there was something
- 36:23Speaker 1: in me that was like I don't deserve to be
- 36:26Speaker 1: you know what I mean, I'm barely made it in
- 36:27Speaker 1: and so to be able to do that, I think
- 36:29Speaker 1: for me, I remember thinking like I think I needed
- 36:31Speaker 1: this to prove to myself that I can make it,
- 36:34Speaker 1: that I belong here. And then I opted out of
- 36:38Speaker 1: surgery because the next year was the Olympic year, and
- 36:42Speaker 1: when it got postponed, we decided to do the surgery.
- 36:45Speaker 4: But it was weird.
- 36:46Speaker 1: It took ten months for it to heal, and so
- 36:49Speaker 1: I was actually training that whole ten months. I remember
- 36:51Speaker 1: my coach would be like, why are you limping? I'm like, oh,
- 36:54Speaker 1: because I just had certain remember that. Do you remember
- 36:56Speaker 1: when I know?
- 36:57Speaker 4: Okay?
- 36:58Speaker 1: And so it was a big thing where I had
- 37:00Speaker 1: to fight through it. But there was something still in
- 37:03Speaker 1: me that was like, I'm gonna I'm I'm ready, I'm
- 37:06Speaker 1: gonna be an Olympian. I know I'm going to be
- 37:08Speaker 1: an Olympian. And I felt short and it really the
- 37:13Speaker 1: girls who came. They came to play. I would say
- 37:17Speaker 1: that I got beat. I wouldn't even say that I lost,
- 37:19Speaker 1: like they did incredible. I'm not even a one hundred
- 37:22Speaker 1: percent sure if I would have made the team healthy
- 37:25Speaker 1: because the girls that just to make it, you would
- 37:27Speaker 1: have taken a silver medal at the Olympics. They did amazing.
- 37:29Speaker 1: The girls showed up. It was amazing. But it was
- 37:33Speaker 1: also something that I thought in my head. I was like,
- 37:36Speaker 1: I could do this, and then I let myself down
- 37:38Speaker 1: in that space and I never thought I was going
- 37:41Speaker 1: to be able to make it. And I remember like
- 37:46Speaker 1: just putting one foot in front of the other being
- 37:48Speaker 1: so sad, but That's what happens when you even sad,
- 37:52Speaker 1: you put one foot in front of the other, you
- 37:55Speaker 1: get just even if it's this much closer, like you
- 37:57Speaker 1: can see, it builds up and eventually it is going
- 38:00Speaker 1: to get to the ceiling if you just keep putting
- 38:03Speaker 1: one foot in front of the other. And like, it's
- 38:05Speaker 1: crazy because I made my first team at thirty three
- 38:08Speaker 1: years old. I never thought I was even gonna be
- 38:11Speaker 1: able to compete when I was thirty three years old,
- 38:13Speaker 1: and so did it through injury. It's possible, Like I
- 38:19Speaker 1: just h like it's possible. Like I just want to
- 38:20Speaker 1: shake everybody and say, like, h it's possible. I promise
- 38:24Speaker 1: you can do it. You just have to keep putting
- 38:25Speaker 1: one foot in front of the other, Okay, ask Joshua
- 38:27Speaker 1: the questions.
- 38:29Speaker 2: I was like, no, we're talking here now, we're talking
- 38:31Speaker 2: about But that's a really beautiful sentiment, right, because there
- 38:34Speaker 2: are so many times that you're down and out and
- 38:36Speaker 2: you're asking yourself, am I ever going to get out
- 38:38Speaker 2: of this pocket? To your point, and you get out
- 38:41Speaker 2: of the pocket, and you're so proud of yourself for
- 38:44Speaker 2: remembering that forward is a pace, right, and no one
- 38:48Speaker 2: has to tell you how fast that pace has to
- 38:50Speaker 2: be except you you get to decide that and work
- 38:53Speaker 2: on what's right for you. I want to talk a
- 38:55Speaker 2: little bit about sacrifice, something that both of you know
- 38:58Speaker 2: a lot about, especially at the elite level that you're at.
- 39:02Speaker 3: I know, Josh that you and your fiance live.
- 39:06Speaker 2: In different places, which is a pretty big sacrifice. Talk
- 39:09Speaker 2: to me about the opportunity cost that goes hand in
- 39:12Speaker 2: hand with performing at this level.
- 39:15Speaker 6: I think you know, it's it's one of those things
- 39:17Speaker 6: where it's such a selfish job where you're like, well,
- 39:21Speaker 6: you know, I need to be at altitude for X
- 39:23Speaker 6: amount of months of the season. I need to go
- 39:24Speaker 6: compete in these different places I need like it was, yeah,
- 39:29Speaker 6: and I don't ever want to stop someone else's life
- 39:32Speaker 6: to be like, hey, come along, like this is really fun.
- 39:35Speaker 6: But you know, my fiance is a dermatologist and she's
- 39:38Speaker 6: amazing at what she does, and she did a year
- 39:41Speaker 6: of residency in Florida, but we're back living in the
- 39:44Speaker 6: same place.
- 39:44Speaker 5: Nice. That's nice.
- 39:46Speaker 6: It does make a huge difference, but yeah, it is.
- 39:48Speaker 6: It's a selfish job, and it's almost a job that
- 39:50Speaker 6: just takes a lot of your mental focus as well,
- 39:53Speaker 6: and you know it's but it's part of it. It's
- 39:55Speaker 6: like you kind of have to live in that in
- 39:58Speaker 6: that zone. And you know, if you're running good mileage
- 40:01Speaker 6: and you're trying to recover between sessions and you're taking
- 40:04Speaker 6: your naps every day and eating rubbish food, it's just
- 40:09Speaker 6: it's just slowly, surely and like we're not in a
- 40:13Speaker 6: rush like I was saying before. And you know, I think,
- 40:16Speaker 6: you know, what's nice to be honest, like sitting up
- 40:18Speaker 6: here listening to Sharry talk like, I think what's really
- 40:22Speaker 6: fun is I'm not great at being at the Olympics
- 40:25Speaker 6: and being like damn, like my nine year old ten
- 40:28Speaker 6: year old self would be so proud of me right now.
- 40:31Speaker 6: Sharry is like the funny like, I don't know how
- 40:34Speaker 6: much kit you got. Every time I see it's just
- 40:36Speaker 6: wearing a different us.
- 40:38Speaker 4: I know, I'm always like do you see my jacket?
- 40:40Speaker 4: He's like, stop talking to me.
- 40:41Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 40:43Speaker 6: In the UK, we are given like a pair of
- 40:45Speaker 6: socks and a vest and like go and compete. That's
- 40:49Speaker 6: but you know, I think, you know, that's such a
- 40:51Speaker 6: it's such a great trait to have, like and everyone
- 40:55Speaker 6: like this racing tomorrow regardless of the result, if it's
- 40:58Speaker 6: what you wanted it, it's not what you want to
- 41:00Speaker 6: like you would at one point in your life you
- 41:02Speaker 6: would have been proud.
- 41:02Speaker 5: To stand on that start line.
- 41:03Speaker 6: And I think we get so used to the success
- 41:06Speaker 6: or the moments that we're in where you know, I'm
- 41:08Speaker 6: standing on a podium at the Olympics for the second
- 41:11Speaker 6: time in my career and I'm like, damn, what the heck,
- 41:14Speaker 6: like point two seconds, like come on, like we need
- 41:16Speaker 6: to be better. And then I've got a team of
- 41:18Speaker 6: people around me like.
- 41:19Speaker 4: Dude, chill, Like this is team of people who's like.
- 41:25Speaker 6: I know, well, it's so it's it's one of those balances,
- 41:27Speaker 6: and I think that's something that I think I'm trying
- 41:29Speaker 6: to gain more like be better at like through you know,
- 41:33Speaker 6: listening to other people talk.
- 41:34Speaker 5: And I think it's such a skill.
- 41:36Speaker 3: How do you celebrate your wins mileage?
- 41:40Speaker 5: No, I'm king.
- 41:43Speaker 3: I go back in the pocket.
- 41:45Speaker 5: I go back in the pocket.
- 41:46Speaker 6: It's actually the one of the best and easiest ways
- 41:49Speaker 6: to like go if you if you've had success, and
- 41:52Speaker 6: you don't really because the question you'll get like if
- 41:54Speaker 6: if tomorrow go is the way you want it? To
- 41:55Speaker 6: go and they're like, oh my goodness, how does it
- 41:57Speaker 6: feel to be you know, a sub three math and
- 41:59Speaker 6: runner or to be a like someone who's finished the
- 42:01Speaker 6: marathon in your career like and you'll be like, I
- 42:03Speaker 6: don't know, it just feels normal. And then go back
- 42:05Speaker 6: to your training setup and go and run a long
- 42:07Speaker 6: run and you're like, damn, like I did this and
- 42:10Speaker 6: it was really hard and it got me to that
- 42:12Speaker 6: spot and that's how it sinks in for me.
- 42:13Speaker 5: Anyway.
- 42:14Speaker 6: So I went back and did some sessions after the
- 42:16Speaker 6: Olympics and I'd just looked to my coach and I
- 42:18Speaker 6: was like, Okay, that's it feels pretty good. So I
- 42:22Speaker 6: think sometimes you have to go back to those hard
- 42:24Speaker 6: moments to feel like what that success is supposed to
- 42:27Speaker 6: feel like, because the euphoria just kind of wears off
- 42:29Speaker 6: pretty quickly.
- 42:30Speaker 3: So how do you celebrate your wins?
- 42:33Speaker 6: Mileage? I just said mileage? No, listen, I mean my
- 42:37Speaker 6: whole family lives in the UK, and the whole of
- 42:40Speaker 6: last year and before, like my films, they lived in
- 42:42Speaker 6: a different place. So just having like everyone after the Olympics,
- 42:46Speaker 6: like Brooks put on this really cool event and we
- 42:48Speaker 6: were all together and it was like that felt special
- 42:51Speaker 6: in its own way. Where my you know, I see
- 42:54Speaker 6: my parents, you know, four times a year, five times
- 42:56Speaker 6: a year hopefully, and obviously it takes about eighteen hours
- 43:00Speaker 6: to get there, and it's just such an effort and
- 43:02Speaker 6: having everyone in one place is like, this is really cool.
- 43:04Speaker 5: And it's not Christmas, so that's nice.
- 43:06Speaker 3: That's nice. Sorry, how do you celebrate your wins?
- 43:09Speaker 1: I cry a lot, so for me, especially, like we
- 43:14Speaker 1: talked about, like sacrifice, and there's been a lot of
- 43:16Speaker 1: times where you know, we have to miss like Christmases,
- 43:19Speaker 1: and we have to miss Thanksgivings, and we have to
- 43:21Speaker 1: miss I have to miss a lot. I've had to
- 43:23Speaker 1: miss funerals because I have to. I can only train
- 43:27Speaker 1: each event once or twice a week, so if I
- 43:30Speaker 1: take a couple of days off, I missed entire weeks
- 43:33Speaker 1: worth of training in that event. The other thing is
- 43:35Speaker 1: my husband has We've been together for almost fifteen years
- 43:38Speaker 1: and he's been with me this entire time, and so
- 43:42Speaker 1: not only have I had.
- 43:43Speaker 4: To sacrifice, but he's had to sacrifice.
- 43:45Speaker 1: Whether it has been the distance that we've done, or
- 43:47Speaker 1: when he moved with me to San Diego, away from sacrifice.
- 43:53Speaker 4: Well, listen, true to be fair, that isn't so nice.
- 44:00Speaker 3: I'm gonna clip that.
- 44:01Speaker 1: And San Diego, what a sacrifice dare But being away
- 44:08Speaker 1: from his community and his family and and uh and
- 44:11Speaker 1: my family, and the great thing is we've been able
- 44:14Speaker 1: to have each other, but being able to celebrate even
- 44:17Speaker 1: with him because he's like, honestly, he's a wonderful chef
- 44:22Speaker 1: who has helped me, Like you know, he's making me
- 44:24Speaker 1: breakfast before I go to practice so that I have
- 44:26Speaker 1: the right fuel, and he knows what I eat, and
- 44:28Speaker 1: he knows like all the things, and so to be
- 44:31Speaker 1: able to do things like we'll go on trips together
- 44:34Speaker 1: after like the games, and we'll go and celebrate and.
- 44:37Speaker 4: We do as much as we can.
- 44:39Speaker 1: Like what like Josh said, is like I am one
- 44:41Speaker 1: of those people who really think about eight year old Shari,
- 44:47Speaker 1: like learning how to high trump for the first time
- 44:49Speaker 1: and thinking like dang, like she's at the Olympics, Like truly,
- 44:54Speaker 1: she's at the Olympics.
- 44:55Speaker 4: And anytime I saw the Olympic rings, I.
- 44:57Speaker 1: Would literally like there was a grass and I remember
- 45:00Speaker 1: I laid on that grass that had the Olympic rings
- 45:03Speaker 1: for so long. I was just like a dog, just
- 45:05Speaker 1: like snuggling in the guts truly, like I was like
- 45:08Speaker 1: rubbing off the Olympic lines and just like really taking
- 45:11Speaker 1: in any moment.
- 45:12Speaker 4: But yeah, we we really.
- 45:13Speaker 1: Do try to celebrate like the big the big moments
- 45:16Speaker 1: and take it in and whether it's a nice dinner,
- 45:19Speaker 1: whether it's a big celebration or a trip or whatever.
- 45:22Speaker 2: I'm hearing that you celebrate the small moments too, which
- 45:24Speaker 2: I think is just such an integral part to getting
- 45:27Speaker 2: to where you want to be, especially in the context
- 45:29Speaker 2: of us talking about training for a marathon as well, right,
- 45:32Speaker 2: like you don't just show up at the starting line
- 45:34Speaker 2: hopefully and run twenty six point two out of nowhere,
- 45:37Speaker 2: right like you take sixteen twenty weeks. Although downstairs he
- 45:42Speaker 2: was saying, like maybe tomorrow's my day.
- 45:44Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, why me? Why said why not?
- 45:48Speaker 5: Why not me? Ask yourself that question every day?
- 45:51Speaker 3: Well, there's certainly a marathon in your future. We know that.
- 45:53Speaker 5: I think so, Yeah, I think so.
- 45:55Speaker 3: I'm not breaking any news here today.
- 45:57Speaker 1: That's the thing that's really cool about Like, I mean,
- 45:59Speaker 1: that's interesting about what Josh said though, is like as
- 46:01Speaker 1: like athletes too, like we expect a lot of ourselves
- 46:04Speaker 1: is I can get a personal best, but then look
- 46:08Speaker 1: at my score and be like, however, this, this and
- 46:11Speaker 1: this and this and this could have been better to
- 46:13Speaker 1: even be a better personal best. And it's like a
- 46:15Speaker 1: lot of times we don't just want a personal best,
- 46:17Speaker 1: It's we want like the ultimate best that we could
- 46:20Speaker 1: ever do in our entire lives.
- 46:21Speaker 4: We want our full thing right now.
- 46:23Speaker 1: And I think we all can relate to that in
- 46:25Speaker 1: like life is expecting every single day to have like
- 46:29Speaker 1: the most energy we've ever had in our entire lives
- 46:32Speaker 1: and having the most productive day and getting all of
- 46:34Speaker 1: the things all at once.
- 46:36Speaker 4: But like, uh, it's it's normal.
- 46:38Speaker 1: Like I do that too when it comes to my performances,
- 46:40Speaker 1: and I think we all do that as well. And
- 46:42Speaker 1: I think it's important for us to also remember to
- 46:45Speaker 1: like give ourselves space to celebrate.
- 46:47Speaker 4: I'll celebrate for you from now on. I'll be your
- 46:49Speaker 4: celebration guru.
- 46:52Speaker 1: Every time he does anything, I'll be like, wait, what
- 46:54Speaker 1: are we doing to celebrate?
- 46:58Speaker 3: He's like, oh, dear, what did I get myself into?
- 47:01Speaker 3: I get myself into. Well.
- 47:03Speaker 2: Clearly, the end of an Olympic cycle can bring about
- 47:07Speaker 2: a lot of feelings.
- 47:08Speaker 3: A lot of thoughts.
- 47:09Speaker 2: We classically hear about the post Olympics blues. What are
- 47:14Speaker 2: you two doing to stay excited about what's next and
- 47:18Speaker 2: keep positive?
- 47:19Speaker 4: Did you get the Olympic blues?
- 47:23Speaker 5: Yes, I would say so.
- 47:25Speaker 1: Was that? Oh?
- 47:25Speaker 3: Tell me more?
- 47:26Speaker 5: Okay, now we're back in therapy.
- 47:32Speaker 6: No, I think you know anyone that feels that high
- 47:36Speaker 6: genuinely feels that high. It's like it's difficult to because
- 47:39Speaker 6: you have to on purpose get unfit and then you know,
- 47:43Speaker 6: first day of practice, like, okay, we have eleven months
- 47:46Speaker 6: go and do it again, and that just that's that's hard.
- 47:49Speaker 6: It's like the first the first couple of months is difficult,
- 47:52Speaker 6: and it's staying on that track that allows you to
- 47:54Speaker 6: allows you to do that. But I feel like it
- 47:56Speaker 6: does get harder every year. But I'm really not sure.
- 48:00Speaker 6: I do think after the Olympics it is because it's
- 48:02Speaker 6: so much easier to after World Championships to like get
- 48:04Speaker 6: ready for the Olympics versus finishing Olympics get ready for
- 48:07Speaker 6: World Championship because they're obviously off like so often. But
- 48:11Speaker 6: you know, I think everyone, look, I have loads of
- 48:14Speaker 6: really fun things to be excited about in the sport.
- 48:16Speaker 6: You know, we have a new track league coming up
- 48:18Speaker 6: that I'm excited about, and we have awesome new products
- 48:21Speaker 6: coming out from a book's perspective, we got these new
- 48:23Speaker 6: shoes that are helping.
- 48:24Speaker 5: Them mileage eat.
- 48:25Speaker 6: A new best friend, Yeah, yeah, I me and Sharry
- 48:28Speaker 6: seems to be yeah together every week doing a talk.
- 48:31Speaker 5: So that's pretty awesome.
- 48:34Speaker 6: So yeah, there's lots of fun things to do in
- 48:35Speaker 6: the sport, and I think the sport's in a really
- 48:37Speaker 6: good spot. And to be honest, like being able to
- 48:41Speaker 6: I had to do a session really early one day
- 48:43Speaker 6: in Seattle before going to LA before we were in
- 48:46Speaker 6: La or in San Diego, and I was like, okay,
- 48:49Speaker 6: like I have to finish this session by eight, so
- 48:50Speaker 6: I'm going to start six thirty. And I was like
- 48:52Speaker 6: really proud of myself because I normally started ten, and
- 48:55Speaker 6: so I was like, damn, no one's going to be
- 48:58Speaker 6: out here. And so I pulled up in the park
- 49:00Speaker 6: and Poclat was full of people and I was like,
- 49:02Speaker 6: I feel so lazy all the time. People are like
- 49:05Speaker 6: finishing their session at six thirty, and I was like
- 49:07Speaker 6: it's not even light yet. So being in a city
- 49:10Speaker 6: like this, like hearing everyone's story in their journey, like
- 49:12Speaker 6: there's inspiration across the sport and in this room, like like,
- 49:16Speaker 6: I'm jealous. You guys get to run so far. I
- 49:18Speaker 6: had to run on my own tomorrow.
- 49:19Speaker 5: That sucks.
- 49:21Speaker 6: So yeah, I'm just pumped to see you guys, And
- 49:24Speaker 6: I think there's always inspiration around you.
- 49:26Speaker 2: I think what's really important also after a big come up,
- 49:29Speaker 2: a big moment like that, is to take a step
- 49:31Speaker 2: back and realize that there is so much more to
- 49:34Speaker 2: you than simply being an athlete, right. I know that's
- 49:37Speaker 2: something that you've spoken out a lot about, Shari, is
- 49:40Speaker 2: just this idea that when sport isn't at the forefront,
- 49:44Speaker 2: there's still so much value to you as a human.
- 49:46Speaker 2: I know, someone might come to your Instagram or your
- 49:50Speaker 2: TikTok and they see this heptathlete, this beautiful heptathlete, so
- 49:55Speaker 2: strong that red lip.
- 49:57Speaker 3: I see you.
- 49:58Speaker 2: But when you in the mirror, beyond being a heptathlete,
- 50:03Speaker 2: what do you see looking back at you.
- 50:06Speaker 4: It depends.
- 50:07Speaker 1: It depends on the day, because like there are days
- 50:10Speaker 1: where like I mean, I mean to get like a
- 50:13Speaker 1: little bit vulnerable. I was actually crying to my husband
- 50:16Speaker 1: the other day because I was telling him like, sometimes
- 50:19Speaker 1: it's so crazy because sometimes I really feel like I'm
- 50:22Speaker 1: not doing enough to help.
- 50:23Speaker 4: Other people and I feel like I could be doing more.
- 50:26Speaker 1: And I like, I was just like really down, and
- 50:28Speaker 1: I was like, I genuinely want to be doing more and.
- 50:33Speaker 4: I just feel like I'm not doing enough. And uh,
- 50:36Speaker 4: but then.
- 50:37Speaker 1: Like like Josh said, like we get to hear other
- 50:40Speaker 1: people's stories and potentially like I had, oh I'm gonna cry.
- 50:44Speaker 1: I had a little boy come up to me the
- 50:45Speaker 1: other day and he was so cute and he just
- 50:47Speaker 1: jumped in my arms and he started giving me a
- 50:50Speaker 1: hug and he was just like I decided to run
- 50:52Speaker 1: this marathon because of you.
- 50:54Speaker 4: And I was like whoa.
- 50:56Speaker 1: Like and it my my, Like it was crazy because
- 50:59Speaker 1: I think I remember like thinking like I had just
- 51:02Speaker 1: talked to CJ and was just like I just don't
- 51:04Speaker 1: feel like I'm doing enough, and like literally almost like
- 51:07Speaker 1: him coming up to me and he was like.
- 51:09Speaker 4: Are you the Sharie Hawkins?
- 51:10Speaker 1: And I was like I think so, and he was
- 51:12Speaker 1: like and it was like depends on there's probably more
- 51:15Speaker 1: of us, I don't know, and and uh, he just
- 51:19Speaker 1: gave me a big hug and just said like I
- 51:21Speaker 1: only decided to run this because of you, and and
- 51:25Speaker 1: moment moments like that it makes it. I don't think
- 51:28Speaker 1: he cared that I didn't do my do a personal
- 51:32Speaker 1: best performance at the Olympics, right, And like the thing
- 51:35Speaker 1: about like Josh, like I've gotten to know him a
- 51:37Speaker 1: little bit, and it's like I don't care if Josh
- 51:39Speaker 1: wins even one more medal because he's just such and
- 51:42Speaker 1: I know you you still get to Okay, you get
- 51:45Speaker 1: to break world records and you get to do those
- 51:47Speaker 1: things like that's that also gets to happen. But it's like,
- 51:50Speaker 1: I don't care if you even get one more personal best,
- 51:53Speaker 1: Like I think you're so fabulous and you have so
- 51:55Speaker 1: much to offer in general and more. And it's hard
- 51:59Speaker 1: for us to separate ourselves from what we do because
- 52:01Speaker 1: it seems like what we do is what people look
- 52:04Speaker 1: at us for. But like then we hear moments like
- 52:08Speaker 1: when people say, like you inspire me to follow my
- 52:10Speaker 1: dreams a little bit harder and work a little harder,
- 52:13Speaker 1: and like you actually do inspire me when I'm going
- 52:15Speaker 1: on like run, so I'm.
- 52:16Speaker 4: Like, well, like Josh is trying to break a world record.
- 52:18Speaker 4: So all the best I can do.
- 52:19Speaker 1: Is try a little harder, right, And it's like just
- 52:21Speaker 1: being able to like and we all do it.
- 52:23Speaker 3: Right.
- 52:24Speaker 1: We have people in our lives, we have like our
- 52:27Speaker 1: children and our nieces and our nephews and that next
- 52:29Speaker 1: generation that we're surrounding ourselves with all the time that
- 52:31Speaker 1: are looking at us and watching us, and they're doing
- 52:35Speaker 1: things because of us. And to be able to like
- 52:38Speaker 1: even that one person, you know, when I'm feeling like
- 52:41Speaker 1: I'm not doing enough, and it's like the one the
- 52:43Speaker 1: people in our lives like, really being able to show
- 52:45Speaker 1: up as our best selves. Like my best self doesn't
- 52:48Speaker 1: necessarily have to be a heptathlete. My best self is
- 52:50Speaker 1: just how I'm showing up every single day, even through
- 52:53Speaker 1: the hard times.
- 52:54Speaker 2: Yeah, what I'm hearing you say is when you look
- 52:56Speaker 2: in the mirror, you see resilience, someone that's evolving. You
- 53:02Speaker 2: see someone that might be different than the person yesterday
- 53:04Speaker 2: but has so much more potential to grow.
- 53:06Speaker 3: Right.
- 53:07Speaker 1: Yeah, And I think that I get reminded to like U.
- 53:10Speaker 1: And I always have to stay strong in the moments
- 53:12Speaker 1: where I do feel like I'm not doing enough, because
- 53:14Speaker 1: there are times I look in the mirror and think
- 53:15Speaker 1: I don't think I'm doing enough. But then in that
- 53:18Speaker 1: same space, like I said before, being able to hold
- 53:21Speaker 1: space for the fact that you are actually doing enough
- 53:24Speaker 1: because you're gonna get reminded. There's gonna be something that
- 53:27Speaker 1: happens later. Where have you guys ever been like, oh
- 53:29Speaker 1: I figured it out life Like I I got it
- 53:31Speaker 1: and I'm good and I did it, and then like
- 53:33Speaker 1: a week later you're like, oh.
- 53:35Speaker 4: I lost it. But it's like it's just because life is.
- 53:38Speaker 1: This, and training is this, and competition is this, and
- 53:42Speaker 1: track is this, and life is this, and it's like
- 53:44Speaker 1: being able when we are in that low to understand
- 53:47Speaker 1: that we're in the low and it's okay.
- 53:49Speaker 4: We're in a pocket of pain. I love that Josh.
- 53:53Speaker 5: Our marathon group chest called pocket pain.
- 53:55Speaker 3: I like it, like I want to. Actually I'm not
- 53:59Speaker 3: sure at.
- 54:03Speaker 2: The end of the day though, Like perfection isn't relatable,
- 54:06Speaker 2: vulnerability is irrelatable, is relatable, And I think that that
- 54:09Speaker 2: is why you have found so much success, if we're
- 54:12Speaker 2: talking numbers wise, in the community that you've built on
- 54:15Speaker 2: social media, is because people see you being your authentic
- 54:19Speaker 2: self and that is inspiring. It's cool to see someone
- 54:23Speaker 2: just thriving. Sure, but I would argue that it is
- 54:27Speaker 2: so much better to see someone and say I can
- 54:29Speaker 2: see myself in that.
- 54:31Speaker 1: Well, And I'm honored because I people are so willing
- 54:34Speaker 1: to share back, and I think that that's so special
- 54:36Speaker 1: because that's how it really bonds me to people, Like
- 54:38Speaker 1: I get like really attached to a lot of people
- 54:41Speaker 1: in my community because we're able to share with each
- 54:43Speaker 1: other about like our hard times and our hardships, and like, honestly,
- 54:47Speaker 1: a lot of people's messages they've made me want to
- 54:49Speaker 1: show up to practice a little bit better, a little
- 54:51Speaker 1: bit stronger, and be like, Okay, I can do this.
- 54:53Speaker 1: And so it really is like something that like happens
- 54:56Speaker 1: on both ends too, truly, Like I don't take it lightly,
- 55:00Speaker 1: and I'm like really honored truly, Like it's great.
- 55:04Speaker 2: Well, I am honored that I've been able to have
- 55:07Speaker 2: such an unbelievable conversation with you both.
- 55:10Speaker 3: I have one final question.
- 55:12Speaker 2: I know that you have expressed that you have a
- 55:14Speaker 2: team of sports psychs and therapists at your disposal at
- 55:17Speaker 2: any moment, But I know also that you have a
- 55:21Speaker 2: squad of coaches in your corner right now. I want
- 55:24Speaker 2: each of you to put on your own coaching hat.
- 55:27Speaker 2: I won't tell anyone if you steal this from someone else.
- 55:31Speaker 2: You have an opportunity to offer the people in this
- 55:33Speaker 2: room towing the starting line tomorrow, either a pep talk,
- 55:38Speaker 2: a piece of wisdom, something that they can show up
- 55:41Speaker 2: and go out and chase their own big potential.
- 55:44Speaker 3: What do you tell them?
- 55:45Speaker 2: I'm going to start, Oh, I'm going to start with
- 55:47Speaker 2: Josh finally, Pocket.
- 55:50Speaker 6: Of Pain Pressures. I think you know I've tried. I've
- 55:53Speaker 6: tried to share a little bit of my experience so far,
- 55:56Speaker 6: but again it's everyone has their own experience tomorrow, go
- 56:00Speaker 6: their own personal journey that they're on. And I think
- 56:02Speaker 6: what the cool part is is you're on that specific
- 56:05Speaker 6: journey yourself, but you're surrounded by other people that are
- 56:07Speaker 6: in their own journey themselves, and you know, being able
- 56:09Speaker 6: to rub shoulders with people like that, but knowing that
- 56:12Speaker 6: you're on your own, your own path and you get
- 56:14Speaker 6: snacks every couple of miles. I am so jealous. And
- 56:20Speaker 6: it's just it's one of those things where if it
- 56:21Speaker 6: takes you two hours or it takes you six, like
- 56:25Speaker 6: you're you're gonna be someone that's finished the marathon tomorrow,
- 56:27Speaker 6: and I think that's incredibly, incredibly inspiring, and you're going
- 56:29Speaker 6: to be part of a group of people, like a
- 56:31Speaker 6: very small group of people that can say they've done that,
- 56:33Speaker 6: and so you should be incredibly proud of yourself.
- 56:36Speaker 1: I like that. Yeah, honestly, that was probably better than
- 56:45Speaker 1: like what I would say, my my biggest thing, because
- 56:48Speaker 1: I love that.
- 56:48Speaker 4: I love that whole process of.
- 56:50Speaker 1: Like you you already have so much to be proud of,
- 56:52Speaker 1: all the work that you've already done, Like the journey
- 56:54Speaker 1: is actually the biggest part of it, and like the
- 56:57Speaker 1: training that you've done and now all all you get
- 56:59Speaker 1: to do now. I was like, go have fun. And
- 57:01Speaker 1: if you get into a space where you have a plan,
- 57:04Speaker 1: trust that plan. And when you're in the pocket, I
- 57:08Speaker 1: love that when you're in the pocket of pain, just
- 57:10Speaker 1: like okay, cool, Like it's one of the it's one
- 57:12Speaker 1: of these and I'm I know that this is coming
- 57:15Speaker 1: because I think that when you're in the middle of it,
- 57:16Speaker 1: it's going to be really really easy to be like, oh,
- 57:18Speaker 1: this is this is the rest of my race.
- 57:20Speaker 4: Now, great, I have I have twenty more miles.
- 57:22Speaker 1: That's gonna be if I do a marathon, it's gonna
- 57:24Speaker 1: be like I have like twenty more miles of this,
- 57:26Speaker 1: Like I know it, but it's like understand that, like
- 57:28Speaker 1: probably the marathon is even I mean, I've run an
- 57:31Speaker 1: eight hundred, so I really understand the pockets of pain
- 57:37Speaker 1: that you guys are going to go. But like, honestly,
- 57:39Speaker 1: like I'm so proud of you. You guys get to
- 57:41Speaker 1: be so proud of you and like just like keep
- 57:43Speaker 1: putting one foot in front of the other, and eventually
- 57:45Speaker 1: you are going to cross that finish line.
- 57:47Speaker 4: Even even when you're in that pocket, just keep pushing.
- 57:50Speaker 4: I love it.
- 57:50Speaker 3: Trust in the training.
- 57:52Speaker 2: I love that we have an explicit podcast episode titled
- 57:55Speaker 2: a Pocket of Pain.
- 57:57Speaker 3: I like, that's it. That's it for those that aren't
- 58:00Speaker 3: following along with.
- 58:01Speaker 2: You just yet, so they can keep up with you
- 58:03Speaker 2: on social media and follow along with your journey.
- 58:05Speaker 3: Can you just give us your details?
- 58:08Speaker 6: This shower is a better follow than me right now,
- 58:11Speaker 6: I'm being she gives you the great advice. Yeah, I
- 58:14Speaker 6: think mostly on Instagram, I'm trying to kind of share
- 58:18Speaker 6: that process, and I think we're going to be sharing
- 58:21Speaker 6: more on YouTube as well coming into the new year.
- 58:23Speaker 6: And just the process of behind the scenes of being
- 58:26Speaker 6: you know, a solid miler.
- 58:28Speaker 3: And the at for that.
- 58:31Speaker 2: Okay, okay, this will be released as a podcast, So
- 58:34Speaker 2: I want the people to find you well.
- 58:36Speaker 6: To be fair, Josh Kerre was taking So I put
- 58:38Speaker 6: Josh with two ages care but my middle lane doesn't start.
- 58:41Speaker 3: That's why that's fair.
- 58:43Speaker 6: I'm famous surfer called Josh Kerrass. So if you guys
- 58:46Speaker 6: follow him, unfollow him. He's got was followers and.
- 58:50Speaker 4: He actually really that's what happened is they were trying to.
- 58:53Speaker 6: Follow you, and that's what happened to San Diego. We
- 58:55Speaker 6: were there for Brooks event and they were like, oh
- 58:56Speaker 6: my god, Josh Kerreen. I was like, yeah, what's up?
- 58:58Speaker 6: And he was like, so like, how long you been
- 59:00Speaker 6: surfing outside?
- 59:03Speaker 5: This is a tough moment for me.
- 59:05Speaker 3: It's fine, Sorry, how do they follow along with you?
- 59:08Speaker 1: So mine is at underscore Sharie Hawkins and Chari spelled
- 59:12Speaker 1: C H A R. I. I'm on Instagram and I'm
- 59:14Speaker 1: on TikTok and I'm on YouTube and yeah there's a
- 59:17Speaker 1: I'm just I love chatting as shocker. But so a
- 59:22Speaker 1: lot of things that I like to do is like, again,
- 59:24Speaker 1: if I can do it.
- 59:25Speaker 4: You can do it. So I like to teach about drills.
- 59:27Speaker 1: I like to teach about warming up and cooling down
- 59:29Speaker 1: and focus on technical aspects and just try to give
- 59:33Speaker 1: a little bit of insight into my into my training,
- 59:36Speaker 1: and now into Josh's training, because I'm gonna start being like,
- 59:39Speaker 1: all right.
- 59:39Speaker 4: So I talked to Josh today and he said.
- 59:43Speaker 2: Oh man, I'm over at Emily a Body and at
- 59:46Speaker 2: Hurdle Podcast. Another hurdle conquered. Gotch you guys next time.
- 59:50Speaker 2: Thank you.
