- 0:07Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schreger is a production of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio.
- 0:22Speaker 2: What's Up, Everybody, This is Peter Schreger. Listen to the
- 0:24Speaker 2: Season with Peter Schreger. We were recording this on a
- 0:27Speaker 2: Tuesday morning after July fourth. We took last week off
- 0:32Speaker 2: to just celebrate the independence of our country and our
- 0:36Speaker 2: amazing country that we have. Because this amazing country brings
- 0:39Speaker 2: us incredible things like hot dog eating contests, sons Joey Chestnut.
- 0:44Speaker 2: It gives us white parties, sons Peter Schrager, and it
- 0:49Speaker 2: gives us things like more anticipation for the NFL and
- 0:53Speaker 2: the football season that is coming. I want to start
- 0:56Speaker 2: this podcast by recapping two things. One a couple of
- 1:01Speaker 2: weeks ago, I was asked to be a part of
- 1:03Speaker 2: the Giants one hundred year anniversary event in New York City.
- 1:08Speaker 2: It was at Madison Square Garden. I was flattered to
- 1:11Speaker 2: be asked and I got to go there and I
- 1:13Speaker 2: got to interview Joe Shane and Brian Dable, the GM
- 1:15Speaker 2: and the head coach. And I also got to introduce
- 1:18Speaker 2: Pete Gogolac, an eighty three year old former New York
- 1:21Speaker 2: giant who's still as sharp as a whip and was
- 1:24Speaker 2: cool as hell. He was a Giants kicker for many
- 1:26Speaker 2: years and one of the true faces of that generation.
- 1:32Speaker 2: But then I was just backstage, and I was backstage,
- 1:35Speaker 2: and the coolest thing is like, I'm backstage and it's
- 1:38Speaker 2: Phil Simms and Eli Manning just talking, and I'm like,
- 1:41Speaker 2: all right, that's cool generationally, especially if you're in the
- 1:44Speaker 2: New York market and they're talking, it's fine. And then
- 1:47Speaker 2: in another conversation is Michael Strahan, Lawrence Taylor, and Kaevon Thibodeau,
- 1:54Speaker 2: and I'm like, I gotta take a photo of this.
- 1:56Speaker 2: That is three generations of like Giants defensive superstars, two
- 2:01Speaker 2: of them Hall of famers, one of them the great
- 2:03Speaker 2: hope for New York Giants fans. And I came over
- 2:06Speaker 2: and I'm watching LT backstage talk with Thibodau. Now Thibodeau
- 2:10Speaker 2: has since told the story, but he asked LT for
- 2:15Speaker 2: some advice. They were talking back and forth and the
- 2:17Speaker 2: conversation went as this. LT says to Thibodeau, how many
- 2:22Speaker 2: sacks did you have your rookie season? And he said eleven.
- 2:26Speaker 2: And he looks at him and said, what did you
- 2:27Speaker 2: play in three games? I was dying laughing. I'm like,
- 2:30Speaker 2: all right, LT, LT's on one here. LT was great.
- 2:33Speaker 2: But then it was cool because it's it wasn't just
- 2:36Speaker 2: the superstar quarterbacks and defensive players like I had a
- 2:40Speaker 2: great conversation with David Tyree backstage and what he's got
- 2:43Speaker 2: going on. Amani Tumor, I haven't seen him in many years.
- 2:46Speaker 2: He was there, Tiki Barber, Carl Banks, Harry Carson. You
- 2:49Speaker 2: go through the list of guys and Victor Cruz from
- 2:53Speaker 2: this most recent generation before this team, and it feels
- 2:57Speaker 2: like there is a lot of pride and a lot
- 2:59Speaker 2: of expectations for this franchise in this season based on
- 3:04Speaker 2: what the legacy is talking about. Eight Championshi's four Super Bowls,
- 3:07Speaker 2: and it was really cool to be a part of
- 3:08Speaker 2: this event, and it kind of seamlessly goes into all right,
- 3:12Speaker 2: Hard Knocks the off season with HBO. Full disclosure, I've
- 3:16Speaker 2: been doing stuff with them, with like these recap pods
- 3:18Speaker 2: with them over the years. I've got a long history
- 3:21Speaker 2: of working with those guys, so I'm a Hard Knocks fan.
- 3:25Speaker 2: I was a little skeptical going in this is only
- 3:30Speaker 2: off season. They don't show any football training camp, and
- 3:34Speaker 2: it was just gonna be like for agency and the
- 3:37Speaker 2: draft and like Pro day's quite personally knowing that, all right, well,
- 3:43Speaker 2: the Giants probably have some editorial control all this day.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Do I need to watch this? Like we know what
- 3:47Speaker 2: happens Saquon leaves, and we know what happens they draft
- 3:50Speaker 2: the leak neighbors. So I go in here with like
- 3:53Speaker 2: rose colored thinking it's gonna be rose colored glasses. That's
- 3:55Speaker 2: just gonna be everyone being like Saquan's awesome. Oh he's
- 3:58Speaker 2: signing with the Eagles. Dang it. I gotta tell you
- 4:02Speaker 2: it was awesome. I've seen the first two episodes. I
- 4:04Speaker 2: think it's awesome. I think I might like it more
- 4:06Speaker 2: than the actual Hard Knocks, which is like a little
- 4:09Speaker 2: bit more about the players and a little bit more
- 4:11Speaker 2: about making the team. And there's like there's a sixth
- 4:14Speaker 2: round pick who we fall in love with, and there's
- 4:16Speaker 2: this you know, position coach who's got this interesting thing
- 4:19Speaker 2: at how at the house, Like this is all ball.
- 4:22Speaker 2: It's rare that me who's in the inside and who
- 4:25Speaker 2: does this podcast and does the Good Morning Football and
- 4:27Speaker 2: does the Fox stuff and has this relationship go it's
- 4:30Speaker 2: rare that. I'm like, oh, I haven't seen that, and
- 4:32Speaker 2: it's cool. Two episodes in really Digging Hard Knocks and
- 4:37Speaker 2: the Giant stuff is neat. Now I'm in New York
- 4:39Speaker 2: all summer. I might not have realized it, but apparently
- 4:43Speaker 2: the Jets are winning the Super Bowl again, because everyone
- 4:45Speaker 2: I talked to is like an Aaron wankoff and I
- 4:47Speaker 2: want to get on the mic here, Aaron, you are
- 4:49Speaker 2: a Bills fan by heart, but you live in New York,
- 4:51Speaker 2: Like I thought that was last year. Jets fans have
- 4:54Speaker 2: learned their lesson. The media has learned their lesson. I
- 4:56Speaker 2: was watching ESPN yesterday and God blessed those guys doing
- 4:59Speaker 2: a show on July ninth and doing an hour long
- 5:02Speaker 2: show about you know and they're like, here are the
- 5:05Speaker 2: top five running backs based on an anonymous poll with
- 5:09Speaker 2: anonymous people, And it might have been pulled out of
- 5:10Speaker 2: someone's you know, you know what, but it's like, the
- 5:12Speaker 2: number one running back is Christian McAffrey. The number tw
- 5:14Speaker 2: running back in the entire league is Bryce Hall. I'm like, wow, Okay.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Then I saw an article saying PFF says that the
- 5:22Speaker 2: Jets of the number one defense in the league. This
- 5:24Speaker 2: is all without even mentioning Rogers. I didn't think this,
- 5:27Speaker 2: we're gonna do this again, But here we are, and
- 5:30Speaker 2: it's July ninth, and the Jets are the team that's
- 5:34Speaker 2: being hyped again. Aaron, did you see this coming?
- 5:36Speaker 3: Did you?
- 5:36Speaker 2: Are you feeling that as well?
- 5:38Speaker 3: So?
- 5:38Speaker 4: I have one very close friend who's a Giants fan actually,
- 5:41Speaker 4: but all summer he will find Aaron Rodgers tweets, copy
- 5:46Speaker 4: them off Twitter. He doesn't send the Twitter link, he
- 5:49Speaker 4: just copies the text and sends it to our football
- 5:52Speaker 4: group chat. So every week I get two or three
- 5:55Speaker 4: new completely unhinged Aaron Rodgers hype.
- 5:58Speaker 3: What are this?
- 5:59Speaker 2: I don't follow Rogers, I don't really.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Twitter.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Oh okay, aout, No, they got hacked.
- 6:06Speaker 4: This is like people saying I've spent ten years betting
- 6:10Speaker 4: on the NFL, and I can tell you one thing.
- 6:12Speaker 4: It's about the heart of the player, and no one's
- 6:14Speaker 4: got more heart than Aaron Rodgers and you can't count
- 6:17Speaker 4: them out. And so I have been seeing I will
- 6:22Speaker 4: use the word unhinged hype for Rogers and the Jets
- 6:25Speaker 4: all summer long, to the point that it is that
- 6:29Speaker 4: maybe it has me nervous, like are.
- 6:30Speaker 2: They are they actually right? Yeah? And it might be
- 6:33Speaker 2: like I was thinking Jets might win the division. Now
- 6:36Speaker 2: I'm like, should I pick the Jets to win the AFC?
- 6:38Speaker 2: And don't even laugh? Like they have the personnel. I
- 6:41Speaker 2: don't know. This is what we do in July ninth,
- 6:43Speaker 2: So Giants one hundredth year. Giants, you know, the Giants
- 6:46Speaker 2: buttoned up shirt and tie, beautiful gala and then then Jets.
- 6:51Speaker 2: You know, it's you're watching ESPN and they've got the
- 6:53Speaker 2: number one ranking everywhere. That's just kind of how it is.
- 6:55Speaker 2: It's like Giants and the Jets, and everyone's excited for
- 6:58Speaker 2: different reasons. And we'll see. But Hard Knocks one hundred recommend.
- 7:03Speaker 2: I also recommencing Inside Out too. Have you seen that, Aaron?
- 7:07Speaker 5: Yeah, I have loved it.
- 7:08Speaker 2: I thought it was beautiful.
- 7:10Speaker 5: Yeah, I was very happy with it.
- 7:12Speaker 4: The New Emotions were a surprisingly successful addition.
- 7:18Speaker 5: I love that series and I love the first one too.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I gotta say I was watching that with my
- 7:23Speaker 2: kid and I'm like so and like like it's talking
- 7:25Speaker 2: to me right now about anxiety and all these things,
- 7:27Speaker 2: and like I'm looking at my son, I'm like does
- 7:28Speaker 2: he understand this? He's seven, he's smiling, he's laughing. I'm crying.
- 7:33Speaker 2: I'm watching like this is beautiful. It's beautiful at the end.
- 7:36Speaker 2: I thought it was a really great movie.
- 7:38Speaker 4: Was it last episode when we talked about the Tony's
- 7:40Speaker 4: Last Night? I Illinois again and it was just as incredible.
- 7:43Speaker 4: I love it so much.
- 7:44Speaker 2: Yeah, well, let's wrapping up. I have a new hobby.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Have you heard of Padel?
- 7:51Speaker 4: Yes, like the the European Uh. It's not pickleball, it's
- 7:56Speaker 4: not tennis, but it's kind of like tennis.
- 8:00Speaker 3: I have.
- 8:00Speaker 5: Yeah, I've played it.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Shrigger's all in when I talk. I'm playing Aaron. I'm
- 8:06Speaker 2: playing daily this summer. Wow, there's a Padell Court by me,
- 8:10Speaker 2: and there's one in Dumbo called Padell House. I'm not
- 8:13Speaker 2: giving out any free promotion. It's my sport. I have
- 8:18Speaker 2: found my sport. I'm telling you. Andrew Schultz, the comedian,
- 8:22Speaker 2: and I have connected based on our love for Padel.
- 8:25Speaker 2: I have heard in recent months that James Harden is
- 8:29Speaker 2: getting into Padel. There's a lot of buzz about Padel.
- 8:32Speaker 2: I missed pickleball?
- 8:34Speaker 5: Did you missed it?
- 8:37Speaker 2: I missed it? Tennis was never accessible for me, Like
- 8:40Speaker 2: I didn't play as a kid. I didn't know. I'm
- 8:42Speaker 2: not a country club guy, so I don't have access
- 8:44Speaker 2: to that stuff here as an adult. We live in
- 8:46Speaker 2: the city. Like it's just not Padel. Glass walls two
- 8:51Speaker 2: on two, low barrier for entry. Everyone can play. If
- 8:54Speaker 2: you've ever played pickleball or ping pong, you can figure
- 8:57Speaker 2: it out. You swing a racket. I'm loving it so
- 9:00Speaker 2: that that I might want to do a spin off
- 9:01Speaker 2: of I'm not sure where this goes with the NFL
- 9:05Speaker 2: and media and wherever is going, but I might have
- 9:07Speaker 2: a career as being like the voice of Padel, and
- 9:09Speaker 2: I want to get in on it now because I mean.
- 9:11Speaker 4: Let's do a hard Knocks you and I go play Padel.
- 9:14Speaker 4: I played it once with.
- 9:15Speaker 2: A friend where'd you play it?
- 9:17Speaker 4: In San Diego with a friend when I was there
- 9:19Speaker 4: watching the Super Bowl with him one year and he
- 9:23Speaker 4: and his wife play and it brought me along and
- 9:26Speaker 4: I played with this other person who they knew, but
- 9:29Speaker 4: I was so used to tennis, and the whole time
- 9:32Speaker 4: they're part there, Like friend who was my partner was like,
- 9:34Speaker 4: it's actually not tennis.
- 9:36Speaker 5: So yeah, because you want you.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Want to hit it on the so here it is,
- 9:39Speaker 2: it's got walls and you're supposed to hit it off
- 9:40Speaker 2: the wall in the bounce, but you want to hit
- 9:42Speaker 2: it straight and they're telling you let it hit off
- 9:44Speaker 2: the wall first.
- 9:45Speaker 5: And I didn't register for me. I couldn't figure.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Something cool about it right now. And Djokovic had a
- 9:51Speaker 2: statement that, like you know, tennis is losing a little
- 9:54Speaker 2: bit of the market share after a Wimbledon match. And
- 9:56Speaker 2: I'm telling you, Padell, if you're listening at home, padel
- 9:59Speaker 2: p A d e l. Go watch it on Instagram,
- 10:01Speaker 2: Go watch it on videos. Shrigger's all in. That's it,
- 10:04Speaker 2: And I think Aaron I would love to play with you.
- 10:06Speaker 4: All right, Yeah, let's go. I'll rewire my brain out
- 10:09Speaker 4: of tennis for it.
- 10:10Speaker 2: So yeah, all right, with no further ado, let's get
- 10:14Speaker 2: to our guest. One of the great young offensive minds
- 10:17Speaker 2: in football. His career is cool. Started off as a
- 10:20Speaker 2: as a great college quarterback, was in the NFL, and
- 10:23Speaker 2: then had like this like Valley in his career where
- 10:26Speaker 2: he had to figure things out. He's going to take
- 10:27Speaker 2: us through it. Actually went from being a college football
- 10:30Speaker 2: stud to an NFL player who working for Pro Football
- 10:33Speaker 2: Focus for a few years analyzing quarterbacks and then eventually
- 10:37Speaker 2: tagged along and got on with their Los Angeles Rams
- 10:41Speaker 2: as the coach, and now he's a new offensive coordinator
- 10:43Speaker 2: of the Atlanta Falcons. Let's go listen and get to
- 10:45Speaker 2: know Zach Robinson, the new OC in Atlanta, our guest today,
- 11:02Speaker 2: is one of my favorite young minds in football. An
- 11:05Speaker 2: offense coach, but is someone who played the game and
- 11:11Speaker 2: has coached the game on many different levels and is
- 11:13Speaker 2: now in a brand new home. He is the offensive
- 11:15Speaker 2: coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons. Mister Zach Robinson, how are you, man?
- 11:19Speaker 3: Greg's great to see him, man. How's the summer.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Oh, summer has been wonderful. Summer has been great. I
- 11:25Speaker 2: don't know about you. Like it's not negative. It's not
- 11:29Speaker 2: that I dread it, but there's like you see the
- 11:32Speaker 2: sands of time the hour glass, and I feel it
- 11:35Speaker 2: now or after for July fourth, it's like, all right,
- 11:37Speaker 2: it's football time and everyone's kind of getting them. Do
- 11:40Speaker 2: you feel that as a coach, like Eric, can you still.
- 11:43Speaker 6: Be Yeah, you're not in chill mode once Once the
- 11:47Speaker 6: fourth of July hits like after that like I was
- 11:50Speaker 6: on the golf course yesterday and I couldn't stop thinking
- 11:53Speaker 6: about first day of training camp and like what we're
- 11:56Speaker 6: going to do and the installed.
- 11:58Speaker 3: So I'm with you.
- 12:00Speaker 6: Those first couple of weeks you feel like you got forever,
- 12:02Speaker 6: and then once fourth of July hits man. You are
- 12:05Speaker 6: football mode. But it's a good thing. You're always excited
- 12:08Speaker 6: to go back.
- 12:09Speaker 3: But you definitely feel the anxiousness of getting started.
- 12:13Speaker 2: You were in LA as a coach since twenty nineteen,
- 12:16Speaker 2: all the way up to last year. Family still in LA.
- 12:19Speaker 2: I always find this interesting, like when the transition is
- 12:21Speaker 2: or when the school year ends, do you guys move
- 12:23Speaker 2: to ed Le? Like where are you guys now?
- 12:25Speaker 6: So we got out here entirely too fast if we
- 12:29Speaker 6: were to do it all over again, so you know
- 12:31Speaker 6: the story about you know, sure we'll probably talk about it.
- 12:34Speaker 6: But my wife came out like three weeks after I
- 12:37Speaker 6: got here. So I got here the first right before
- 12:40Speaker 6: the Super Bowl, and then she was out at the
- 12:43Speaker 6: end of February, So I mean it happened fast. We've
- 12:46Speaker 6: been in Airbnb's, you know, doing that whole deal with
- 12:50Speaker 6: like two kids under two, which is an absolute nightmare.
- 12:53Speaker 6: As you can imagine. But we made it through. We
- 12:56Speaker 6: got into our house finally a couple months ago, so
- 12:58Speaker 6: we're all all settled in. But yeah, we we were
- 13:01Speaker 6: looking back at it, it's like, Okay, if we were
- 13:03Speaker 6: to do this transition again, probably waiting a little bit
- 13:08Speaker 6: to get the house figured out before you just send
- 13:11Speaker 6: the whole crew out.
- 13:12Speaker 3: But made it work.
- 13:13Speaker 6: Thank God I got a good wife that could put
- 13:16Speaker 6: up with all of it because it was you know,
- 13:18Speaker 6: it was a big change.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Well, I think you guys had a big week when
- 13:21Speaker 2: you got the offensive coordinator gig in Atlanta. We'll go
- 13:24Speaker 2: through your career and all that, but can you just
- 13:26Speaker 2: take everyone through the personal and the career of that
- 13:29Speaker 2: that wild few days in Zach Robinson's life.
- 13:34Speaker 6: Yeah, you were on it, you knew about it right away.
- 13:37Speaker 6: But yeah, I'll try to get the shortened version of it.
- 13:40Speaker 6: But so, my wife was very pregnant, due date was
- 13:45Speaker 6: coming up. Raheem was going through all the interview process.
- 13:48Speaker 6: You know, he was interviewing with everybody. He hadn't had
- 13:51Speaker 6: a you know, it wasn't solidified, and he was going
- 13:54Speaker 6: to Atlanta yet. And so my wife's this is like, say, Sunday,
- 13:57Speaker 6: like January twenty first, like right around there. And so
- 14:01Speaker 6: you know, I was fortunate enough to get a few
- 14:03Speaker 6: other you know looks and and some interviews and those things,
- 14:06Speaker 6: and I was supposed to fly out to some places
- 14:08Speaker 6: and I had to kind of you know, say, hey,
- 14:10Speaker 6: guys like wife's do any day, have to put those
- 14:13Speaker 6: on hold. And so fast forward to Thursday, Raheem gets
- 14:18Speaker 6: the job in Atlanta. You know, the all the hoops
- 14:22Speaker 6: that you still got to jump through to you know,
- 14:25Speaker 6: make that stuff official, and all that stuff there was.
- 14:27Speaker 6: You know, I had a good, good idea I was
- 14:29Speaker 6: going to go with Raheem, and we've talked about it
- 14:31Speaker 6: for a long time and so so.
- 14:34Speaker 3: Fast forward to Saturday.
- 14:36Speaker 6: I'm actually on the phone with Sean at our house
- 14:40Speaker 6: and won't get into too much detail, but basically, get
- 14:43Speaker 6: off the phone with Sean.
- 14:44Speaker 3: My wife comes out and I'm like, I'm like, you
- 14:47Speaker 3: look like we got to go, like.
- 14:48Speaker 6: We we got to get like we got we got
- 14:51Speaker 6: to roll. Yeah, I don't know what it is, but
- 14:55Speaker 6: I don't I don't think. I think we got to
- 14:56Speaker 6: keep it moving because I don't know what to do.
- 14:58Speaker 3: Uh.
- 14:59Speaker 6: We got to the hospital fast forward, you know, two
- 15:03Speaker 6: hours later and really, my my agent, Kyle McCarthy.
- 15:07Speaker 3: It's funny, say my agent, he's like my best buddy.
- 15:10Speaker 6: So he's I'm texting him like, hey, going to the
- 15:13Speaker 6: going to hospital, you know, let me know what's going
- 15:16Speaker 6: on with all this, and so he's like, hey, don't
- 15:18Speaker 6: worry about it, like I won't bother you. Just take
- 15:22Speaker 6: care of the business whatever and we'll figure it out later.
- 15:25Speaker 6: So of course Kyle's texting me like all throughout, like
- 15:28Speaker 6: when we're at the hospital, I'm like.
- 15:30Speaker 3: You send me a market yeah. Yeah.
- 15:32Speaker 6: So it's like say three, like around three fifteen, our
- 15:38Speaker 6: son Cooper was born, and then I mean couldn't have
- 15:42Speaker 6: been fifteen. Twenty minutes later, Kyle texted me. He's like, hey,
- 15:46Speaker 6: you're good to go, give me a call. I get
- 15:48Speaker 6: a FaceTime from raheem, I get some other calls for
- 15:51Speaker 6: some other people with the Falcons, And I mean next
- 15:55Speaker 6: thing I know, like me is my wife's still like,
- 15:58Speaker 6: you know, the doctor is still like so that I
- 16:00Speaker 6: had to call some of the other coaches that were
- 16:02Speaker 6: involved with you know, interviews.
- 16:06Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it moved so fat.
- 16:08Speaker 6: I mean I still get crap from my wife like
- 16:09Speaker 6: to this day, she's like, you were on the phone
- 16:11Speaker 6: twenty minutes after our.
- 16:13Speaker 3: Some you know, so I'll probably never hear the end
- 16:16Speaker 3: of that, but I.
- 16:16Speaker 2: Think it's a I think it's a great story. I
- 16:18Speaker 2: think it's amazing. It's the start of a new life,
- 16:21Speaker 2: a new life and real terms and a new life
- 16:23Speaker 2: career wise for the family, and here you are in Atlanta.
- 16:26Speaker 2: I love that story. I think it's cool. Wow, you've
- 16:29Speaker 2: been a great coach for the Rams for many years.
- 16:31Speaker 2: We've seen that McVeigh tree get picked apart, especially on
- 16:34Speaker 2: the offensive side. Now it's your opportunity. You leave with Raheem.
- 16:37Speaker 2: But let's start from the beginning. Grew up in Colorado,
- 16:40Speaker 2: but you were a stud quarterback at Oklahoma State and
- 16:45Speaker 2: so good that you guys finished the regular season and
- 16:50Speaker 2: you had three thoy sixty four passing yards, twenty five touchdowns.
- 16:54Speaker 2: You go to the Senior Bowl, the whole deal, and
- 16:56Speaker 2: you go to the Patriots and have an NFL career
- 16:59Speaker 2: and bouncing around little Patriots, Seattle, Detroit, Cincinnati until twenty
- 17:03Speaker 2: thirteen or after three years in the lead, you say, Okay,
- 17:07Speaker 2: I'm going to go on and explore their options. Getting
- 17:11Speaker 2: to the NFL. What kind of experience was that for you?
- 17:14Speaker 2: And then when did you know did the league tell
- 17:16Speaker 2: you or did you yourself say, Okay, I think this
- 17:18Speaker 2: thing is over.
- 17:20Speaker 3: Yes.
- 17:20Speaker 6: I was, you know, lucky to be around some really
- 17:22Speaker 6: good players, Oklhoma statement does does?
- 17:24Speaker 3: Bryant was my receiver. I mean I would just closed
- 17:27Speaker 3: my eyes and throw jump off Ken.
- 17:33Speaker 6: We have Brandon Pettigrew, Russell left Tack. I mean we
- 17:37Speaker 6: were stacked. So you know, we had had some good
- 17:40Speaker 6: teams there my last like three years. And then, yeah,
- 17:44Speaker 6: I always wanted to play in the NFL.
- 17:46Speaker 3: Didn't know how realistic it was.
- 17:49Speaker 6: I was always a little bit more of a kind
- 17:51Speaker 6: of dual threat, Like I ran a decent amount in
- 17:53Speaker 6: college too, and at that time it was still like
- 17:56Speaker 6: the big pocket passer, like all the guys that were
- 17:59Speaker 6: getting drafted and so ended up, you know, luckily getting
- 18:02Speaker 6: drafted late late late to the Patriots.
- 18:05Speaker 3: Uh.
- 18:05Speaker 6: And then was just kind of scratching a calon to
- 18:08Speaker 6: stay on a roster, to practice squads and so, like
- 18:11Speaker 6: you mentioned, bounce around to four different places and four years,
- 18:15Speaker 6: ended up having an elbow issue. And in my time
- 18:18Speaker 6: in Cincinnati, so had Tommy John. At that point, I
- 18:21Speaker 6: kind of knew, you know, it was probably gonna be over.
- 18:25Speaker 6: You know, if you're a third string quarterback and you're
- 18:27Speaker 6: in year four and you haven't elevated yourself to a backup,
- 18:30Speaker 6: I mean they're looking for that next crop of guys.
- 18:33Speaker 3: So I wasn't. I was very aware of it. Always
- 18:38Speaker 3: wanted to get into coaching.
- 18:39Speaker 6: I always liked the one on one, you know, coaching
- 18:42Speaker 6: with quarterbacks when I was in high school, working with
- 18:45Speaker 6: younger guys, when I was in college, coming back and
- 18:47Speaker 6: working with the high school guys when I was in college,
- 18:50Speaker 6: working with our younger guys. So I always enjoyed that
- 18:53Speaker 6: kind of one on one training with quarterbacks. I started
- 18:56Speaker 6: getting that going as I was rehabbing my elbow after
- 19:00Speaker 6: I was done playing.
- 19:01Speaker 3: You know, you're you're at a point where you're like,
- 19:03Speaker 3: do I want to go into coaching? Am I Like?
- 19:05Speaker 3: Am I good with this? Or should I try something else?
- 19:08Speaker 6: Like I did a couple job shadows at like a
- 19:11Speaker 6: commercial real estate company, and I was like, no shot,
- 19:14Speaker 6: Like I got to have football, and so ended up
- 19:18Speaker 6: reaching out to Pro Football Focus. I love this, just
- 19:22Speaker 6: wrote an email. I hadn't really didn't know anything about him.
- 19:25Speaker 6: This was in like you mentioned, like twenty thirteen, twenty fourteen,
- 19:28Speaker 6: so they're still relatively you know, unknown at that point,
- 19:32Speaker 6: but I knew they had access to film, and so
- 19:35Speaker 6: I was like, all right, how can I pair up
- 19:36Speaker 6: you know, working with some college quarterbacks and Andy Dalton
- 19:41Speaker 6: was a good buddy.
- 19:41Speaker 3: He would work with him in Dallas in the off season,
- 19:43Speaker 3: and so how can I pair that up with you know,
- 19:46Speaker 3: still having access to film and just seeing around the
- 19:49Speaker 3: league and around college football and watching quarterback play.
- 19:52Speaker 6: So I actually heard back from Bobby Slowick. He was
- 19:55Speaker 6: the first person that called me with people.
- 19:57Speaker 2: Funny, where was Bobby at the time he.
- 19:59Speaker 3: Was at Bobby was at PFF.
- 20:01Speaker 2: This is amazing to me. So in Cincinnati, Ohio, you
- 20:03Speaker 2: got this pro football focus for the listeners. Today do
- 20:05Speaker 2: a lot of analytic teams used them. Chris Collinsworth eventually
- 20:08Speaker 2: purchased them, and now it's a you know, you see
- 20:11Speaker 2: it everywhere PFF Pro football folks. But at the time,
- 20:14Speaker 2: it was one of the first groups that were like,
- 20:15Speaker 2: let's put numbers and analytics together. But you're right, they
- 20:18Speaker 2: had all the film and teams would pay a high
- 20:20Speaker 2: Premium one hundreds of thousands of dollars to get their data,
- 20:23Speaker 2: but they also rely on them because they would watch
- 20:26Speaker 2: the film. So Bobby Slowick, who is now one of
- 20:29Speaker 2: the hot offensive coordinators in the league, down with Houston
- 20:31Speaker 2: and CJ. Stroud and you, who at the time were
- 20:35Speaker 2: just you know, an ex player who's looking to find
- 20:37Speaker 2: his way. You guys both were at PFF in twenty thirteen.
- 20:42Speaker 2: This is fascinating.
- 20:44Speaker 3: Yeah it was.
- 20:45Speaker 6: Yeah, so Bob, Bobby and I ended up working closely
- 20:47Speaker 6: for a couple of years and then this is amazing.
- 20:50Speaker 2: I didn't know any of this. I love this.
- 20:52Speaker 3: Is Bobby.
- 20:53Speaker 2: He's twenty something.
- 20:54Speaker 6: Bobby's I think we're about to say it. He might
- 20:58Speaker 6: be a little younger than me, like maybe, right, So
- 21:00Speaker 6: we're all we're probably let's say, like twenty ninth, you know,
- 21:05Speaker 6: somewhere around there. And uh yeah, So Bobby and I were,
- 21:09Speaker 6: you know, breaking down coverages, watching film, just doing stuff
- 21:13Speaker 6: underneath the PFF umbrella.
- 21:15Speaker 3: But also you know.
- 21:16Speaker 6: I'm sure like like I was doing just kind of
- 21:18Speaker 6: had my own stuff with watching film, making you.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Guys in the room. Were you guys in the same
- 21:24Speaker 2: room watching stuff or was.
- 21:25Speaker 6: It he was in Bobby was in Cincinnati. I went
- 21:28Speaker 6: up there a couple of times.
- 21:29Speaker 3: I was living in Dallas where I was rehabbing my elbow,
- 21:32Speaker 3: and so so we would hop on calls all the time,
- 21:36Speaker 3: and I love this talk.
- 21:37Speaker 6: Through coverage, you know, everything that was pertaining to the
- 21:41Speaker 6: stuff with PFF, and then we would obviously have our
- 21:43Speaker 6: own conversations just about football on the.
- 21:45Speaker 3: Side as well.
- 21:46Speaker 6: So so yeah, I kind of just kept up with
- 21:49Speaker 6: around the league stuff with PFF right after that. And
- 21:53Speaker 6: then you know, I knew you know, as you know,
- 21:57Speaker 6: Shreg's like you got to have a wife that's like
- 22:00Speaker 6: all in on, Like okay, So I met my wife
- 22:03Speaker 6: and I kind of mentioned I was, you know, wanted
- 22:05Speaker 6: to get into coaching.
- 22:06Speaker 3: And she's like, yeah, of course, like this UD had
- 22:09Speaker 3: no idea, what it's your passion. So she was ultra supportive.
- 22:14Speaker 6: And and then yeah, I was actually training quarterback easton
- 22:20Speaker 6: Stick North Dakota State, Yeah, with with REP one and
- 22:26Speaker 6: there was a connection there with Sean I McVeigh and uh.
- 22:30Speaker 3: In that group, and so I got an interview.
- 22:32Speaker 6: With Sean and and then uh next day got got hired,
- 22:36Speaker 6: and uh, you know, obviously always gonna be forever grateful
- 22:39Speaker 6: for Sean gave me that first opportunity, but definitely moved fast,
- 22:43Speaker 6: you know, from that whole whole time of hey are
- 22:46Speaker 6: we you know, I'm working with PFF, I'm training guys
- 22:49Speaker 6: on the side, and okay, now.
- 22:51Speaker 3: We're in it, we're coaching, and so it definitely was
- 22:54Speaker 3: a whirlwind. But shoot, it's been it's been awesome.
- 22:56Speaker 2: When you're at PFF and you're doing all this stuff,
- 22:58Speaker 2: did you ever feel like imposter syndrome or like you
- 23:02Speaker 2: weren't in the cool crowd you're on the outside, Because
- 23:04Speaker 2: I think that's a humbling thing to be like, all right,
- 23:06Speaker 2: I'm not going to be with a team, I'm not
- 23:08Speaker 2: with it, but like I'm with this other organization. And
- 23:11Speaker 2: when we go to the combine, remember you and I
- 23:12Speaker 2: met when you were with PFF at the time, and
- 23:14Speaker 2: I'm like, Zach Robinson the former player, You're like, yeah,
- 23:16Speaker 2: of course, And I'm like, how cool is that? This
- 23:18Speaker 2: guy's like this is my access in it's not the
- 23:21Speaker 2: traditional route. Did you ever feel doubt going there? Like
- 23:24Speaker 2: you were so self confident that this is just what's
- 23:26Speaker 2: going to take for me to get to my path
- 23:28Speaker 2: to coaching.
- 23:29Speaker 3: You know, of course you want to be in the mix,
- 23:31Speaker 3: and that was the hardest thing. You're in the locker.
- 23:33Speaker 6: Room like as a player, and you just missed that
- 23:36Speaker 6: aspect of it. And so there were times where I
- 23:41Speaker 6: was like, man, I got I got to just jump in.
- 23:42Speaker 6: I had some opportunities to go to college, and I
- 23:45Speaker 6: really wanted to coach in the NFL, and so I
- 23:47Speaker 6: knew that as long as I was staying close to
- 23:49Speaker 6: the game and staying up with things that, you know,
- 23:52Speaker 6: hopefully an opportunity would come up. I was at a
- 23:55Speaker 6: point where, you know, before I got hired with the Rams,
- 23:57Speaker 6: I was I was like, all right, whatever opportunity comes, like,
- 24:00Speaker 6: we're going And so yeah, a couple you know, college
- 24:03Speaker 6: like Oregon and a couple of colleges that I was
- 24:05Speaker 6: looking to go to if I didn't.
- 24:07Speaker 3: Get a job with the Rams and Sean.
- 24:09Speaker 6: So but yeah, absolutely, you miss like just being with
- 24:13Speaker 6: the guys, Like that's why you want to get into coaching,
- 24:15Speaker 6: is being a part of something you know greater than yourself,
- 24:18Speaker 6: working towards a goal with a bunch of guys. So yeah,
- 24:22Speaker 6: I felt there was some imposters to them, you know,
- 24:24Speaker 6: for sure, when I was working with PFF.
- 24:26Speaker 2: And you get there and the Rams guys love you.
- 24:29Speaker 2: Who's on that coaching staff those first couple of years.
- 24:32Speaker 2: I know it's been a rotating door, but let's go
- 24:34Speaker 2: through the tree just for the listeners can realize the
- 24:36Speaker 2: brain trust that was in the building.
- 24:38Speaker 6: Talking about unbelievable guys to be around and learn as
- 24:42Speaker 6: a young coach coming in like you're a player, but like.
- 24:45Speaker 3: You really have no idea until you get into it.
- 24:47Speaker 6: So my head's spinning. You know, there's so much to learn.
- 24:50Speaker 6: But I worked with Shane Waldron. I was an assistant
- 24:53Speaker 6: quarterback coach. Shane was a quarterback coach that first year.
- 24:56Speaker 6: Wes Phillips was on staff. You had Aaron Kromer, Kevin
- 25:01Speaker 6: O'Connell comes in the next year in twenty twenty, you
- 25:05Speaker 6: got Liam Cohen, who's one of my best buddies. I know,
- 25:07Speaker 6: shoot you and I you, Liam and I have had
- 25:10Speaker 6: some good times together at Sean's wedding.
- 25:13Speaker 3: And then you've got like Thomas Brown comes through.
- 25:16Speaker 6: I mean, there's so many guys, so many great coaches
- 25:20Speaker 6: that you're learning a ton from, like West Phillips to
- 25:22Speaker 6: this day, like I can, I can still hear some
- 25:24Speaker 6: of the things that I would hear Wes talk about,
- 25:27Speaker 6: whether it's with the tight Ends or in the past game.
- 25:29Speaker 3: And so you're around a bunch of good.
- 25:31Speaker 6: Dudes, all love ball, all with the same mindset and
- 25:35Speaker 6: just forever grateful to be around those guys, and those
- 25:37Speaker 6: guys just open up everything and to somebody that really
- 25:41Speaker 6: you know, you think you know, but like.
- 25:43Speaker 3: I said, you just have no idea until you're actually
- 25:45Speaker 3: in it.
- 25:45Speaker 2: What Sean's special sauce that you try to take with
- 25:48Speaker 2: you That all these guys work for them and they leave,
- 25:50Speaker 2: they go elsewhere, but there's never any bad blood and
- 25:53Speaker 2: it always feels like they take the best attributes that
- 25:56Speaker 2: he has. What what did you learn from McVeigh all
- 25:58Speaker 2: those years watching him run.
- 25:59Speaker 6: A room, most dynamic person as you know srace that
- 26:02Speaker 6: you'll you'll ever be around, you know, as a leader
- 26:05Speaker 6: from that standpoint point, The way that he can pull
- 26:07Speaker 6: guys together, the way that he can get the best
- 26:10Speaker 6: out of everybody, whether it's the top guys at the roster,
- 26:12Speaker 6: bottom guys at the roster, a young coach, older coaches everybody.
- 26:17Speaker 3: There's such an urgency with Sean. Uh, you know that he.
- 26:20Speaker 6: Wants to be the best that that just rises everybody
- 26:23Speaker 6: else in the building to his level, and so.
- 26:26Speaker 3: Always will be forever, you know, grateful for the.
- 26:30Speaker 6: Things that you know, whether I realize at the time
- 26:32Speaker 6: I was learning from them, but now that I have
- 26:35Speaker 6: kind of obviously been away for a few months, realize like, oh,
- 26:39Speaker 6: those little things that maybe I didn't really know at
- 26:41Speaker 6: the time are kind of creeping into my head about
- 26:45Speaker 6: something that came up in twenty twenty one or twenty
- 26:47Speaker 6: you know, just different, different experiences. Obviously was there for
- 26:50Speaker 6: five years, so got to see a lot of had
- 26:52Speaker 6: a lot of you know, ups, and there's obviously.
- 26:54Speaker 3: Some downs as well that just come with the game.
- 26:56Speaker 6: But but yeah, just so dynamic, the urgency, and then
- 27:02Speaker 6: obviously the way that Sean sees the game is unique
- 27:05Speaker 6: and it's you know, the best in the fell in
- 27:06Speaker 6: terms of, you know, how he can package plays and
- 27:10Speaker 6: put together a game plan and then feel the flow
- 27:13Speaker 6: of the game as it's going as a play caller,
- 27:15Speaker 6: and so all those things that you know, most people
- 27:19Speaker 6: hear about, but being able to see it up close
- 27:22Speaker 6: and just see him operate on a day to day basis. Shoot,
- 27:25Speaker 6: there's going to be things that fifteen twenty years down
- 27:28Speaker 6: the line, I'm going to.
- 27:28Speaker 3: Be still pulling from Sean. You know.
- 27:31Speaker 2: It's funny. I talked to him obviously, and that Super
- 27:34Speaker 2: Bowl season was such a ride, and there was so
- 27:36Speaker 2: much pressure and it was so cool to watch like
- 27:38Speaker 2: the Rams like actually finish and seal the deal, especially
- 27:41Speaker 2: the way he did in the final drive, and you
- 27:43Speaker 2: guys getting contributions from Ben Scaralna good like just figuring
- 27:47Speaker 2: it out and just piecing it together with Odell out
- 27:49Speaker 2: and you know, injury issues everywhere else and still getting
- 27:53Speaker 2: away to get the super Bowl last year twenty twenty two.
- 27:57Speaker 2: Down year, but there were some learning things. I think
- 28:00Speaker 2: Sean had more fun and I could tell that this
- 28:02Speaker 2: team really enjoyed the twenty twenty three season almost as
- 28:06Speaker 2: much as the Super Bowl season, being there first and
- 28:09Speaker 2: and having no expectations going into the season. People talking
- 28:12Speaker 2: about the Rams tanking for Caleb Williams and no where
- 28:16Speaker 2: a couple of months removed. But just like how cool
- 28:17Speaker 2: was last year's ride getting to the wildcard rat and
- 28:20Speaker 2: almost beating the Lions in their building.
- 28:22Speaker 6: It was a blast, Like just the reset that it
- 28:24Speaker 6: took from that twenty twenty two season. Like you mentioned
- 28:28Speaker 6: to showing up that first day of the twenty twenty
- 28:30Speaker 6: three offseason, it was like, hey, like, we're attacking this
- 28:33Speaker 6: thing and we're going to go all in.
- 28:35Speaker 3: We're going to be there for each other every single day.
- 28:37Speaker 6: And Sean's resiliency through the whole thing was obviously spread
- 28:41Speaker 6: throughout the building and it was a blast.
- 28:44Speaker 3: Though we had we had fun. It was obviously you
- 28:46Speaker 3: got Matthew.
- 28:47Speaker 6: Stafford and his level of urgency raises the entire building
- 28:52Speaker 6: as well. He played out of his mind, you know,
- 28:54Speaker 6: especially down down the stretch there, and then just you know,
- 28:58Speaker 6: obviously Puka and the way the offensive line played and
- 29:01Speaker 6: the way that the defensive defense played. I mean, you
- 29:03Speaker 6: go into that season and you're looking around and you're like,
- 29:06Speaker 6: man out, how's this gonna all come together?
- 29:08Speaker 3: And the way that that Rod got those guys going
- 29:10Speaker 3: on that.
- 29:10Speaker 6: Side of the ball, It was just a cool It
- 29:13Speaker 6: was something like you mentioned, like the twenty one season.
- 29:16Speaker 3: Obviously that's that was pretty special.
- 29:18Speaker 6: But I think we'll always remember that season, those guys
- 29:21Speaker 6: that were in it, and just knowing that feeling of
- 29:23Speaker 6: what it was like starting that offseason. Uh, and then
- 29:26Speaker 6: just the messaging that was so consistent throughout the year
- 29:29Speaker 6: from Sean and from from the.
- 29:31Speaker 3: Rest of the staff that it was a special year.
- 29:34Speaker 6: Still wish we could have obviously kept going there, but
- 29:37Speaker 6: that was a tough atmosphere up in Detroit.
- 29:39Speaker 3: Man, that place was rock down as an unbelievable game.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Give me a good Pukah story, Like when did you
- 29:44Speaker 2: know that this kid, Puka Nakua was going to be
- 29:47Speaker 2: a special fifth round pick out of BYU. There's a
- 29:49Speaker 2: little buzz in training camp, but then yeah, one of
- 29:51Speaker 2: the greatest seasons we've ever seen from a rookie receiver.
- 29:54Speaker 6: Like in the spring, you saw like his aggressive hands.
- 29:57Speaker 6: I mean, he's got unbelievable hands. Like Stafford I remember
- 30:00Speaker 6: always to be like, I feel like I can throw
- 30:02Speaker 6: the ball as hard as I want to when he's
- 30:04Speaker 6: five yards away and he's just gonna pluck it. And
- 30:07Speaker 6: so that comfort for a guy like Matthew who's going
- 30:09Speaker 6: to put it into some tight windows, You're like, okay.
- 30:11Speaker 6: And then you see him moving around and he was
- 30:13Speaker 6: slipping a little bit running some routes and he's learning, uh,
- 30:17Speaker 6: you know, just the route tree that that he's going
- 30:19Speaker 6: to be asked to do in that offense. And but
- 30:22Speaker 6: really I think it was like the first couple of
- 30:25Speaker 6: weeks of camp, like you saw once the pads really
- 30:27Speaker 6: came on, you saw how physical he was, and you
- 30:29Speaker 6: saw just like just his mentality day to day when
- 30:33Speaker 6: he was playing football, like he he just was an
- 30:36Speaker 6: absolute dog. And so him on game days, like I mean,
- 30:40Speaker 6: you've seen his hair like it's going everywhere.
- 30:42Speaker 3: Like there'd be times where.
- 30:43Speaker 6: Like he'd be sitting on the bench like this and
- 30:45Speaker 6: he's got he looks like wolverine like coming down.
- 30:48Speaker 3: Out and you're like, Poka, you gun. He's like yes, coach,
- 30:52Speaker 3: you know, and you're just like, oh, this guy. Yeah.
- 30:55Speaker 6: So he's one of those guys that the lights come
- 30:57Speaker 6: on and he's just a football player and.
- 31:01Speaker 3: He's he's a great player.
- 31:04Speaker 2: Obviously, you've got relationship chips all over the league. Raheem Morris, though,
- 31:09Speaker 2: he taps you on the shoulder and says, hey, let's
- 31:11Speaker 2: let's take whatever we got here in LA and let's
- 31:13Speaker 2: bring this juice to it Atlanta. Come with me. That's
- 31:16Speaker 2: a big decision to leave, but you did. You took
- 31:19Speaker 2: the leap of faith. What's Raheem bring to the table
- 31:22Speaker 2: And how excited are you to start this new chapter
- 31:24Speaker 2: in your career?
- 31:25Speaker 6: Don Pumps to work with Row and E's offices were
- 31:28Speaker 6: right across from each other for the last three years,
- 31:30Speaker 6: so we're constantly popping in and out, Hey, come check
- 31:33Speaker 6: this out. And so it was really able to learn
- 31:35Speaker 6: a ton from a defensive perspective from Raw. But then
- 31:38Speaker 6: you know, most people know that he coached receivers, but
- 31:41Speaker 6: Ros's got a great offensive mine as well.
- 31:43Speaker 3: So that's what's exciting for me is the first time
- 31:45Speaker 3: doing this knowing.
- 31:46Speaker 6: That, you know, I got a head coach and a
- 31:48Speaker 6: guy that first of all, I love being around every
- 31:51Speaker 6: single day, and you know, Raw, like guys that know him,
- 31:53Speaker 6: it's like he's never had a bad Day's best dude ever.
- 31:56Speaker 2: Agree, might be the most charismatic person in.
- 31:58Speaker 3: Football, honestly, maybe that I've ever met. And I think mc.
- 32:02Speaker 2: Veigh would say that too, like Sean would say that
- 32:04Speaker 2: as well.
- 32:05Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree. Both those guys together, I mean, you
- 32:08Speaker 3: can't get a word in, so you just sit there listen.
- 32:11Speaker 6: But but not Rod's the best and great defensive mind,
- 32:15Speaker 6: but I'm he loves offense, so it's fun.
- 32:17Speaker 3: You know.
- 32:18Speaker 6: Shoot, we're texting a couple of weeks ago, Hey what
- 32:20Speaker 6: if we did this on this and so to have
- 32:22Speaker 6: that from a head coach going into it for the
- 32:25Speaker 6: first time knowing that I'm going to have some blind
- 32:28Speaker 6: spots that need to be filled. Pump to work with Rock,
- 32:31Speaker 6: continue to keep learning from him the way that he
- 32:33Speaker 6: sees the game on both sides of the football Situationally,
- 32:37Speaker 6: he's going to help me out a ton. So definitely
- 32:39Speaker 6: pumped to get a going and knowing it's going to
- 32:42Speaker 6: be a fun work environment no matter what through the
- 32:45Speaker 6: ebbs of the flows. Rod has not changed from day
- 32:47Speaker 6: to day, so it'll be it'll be fun fun season,
- 32:51Speaker 6: challenging of course.
- 32:52Speaker 3: But definitely excited to work with rob and the rest
- 32:55Speaker 3: of the guys.
- 32:56Speaker 2: All Right, So the Falcons offensive roster, I mean, I
- 32:59Speaker 2: think of the first team since the fifties. I remember
- 33:03Speaker 2: the stat the draft to draft a skill position in
- 33:05Speaker 2: the top eight, like four straight years you get Pitt's
- 33:09Speaker 2: in London, b Jehan, Robinson and now Pennix. When you
- 33:13Speaker 2: look at this roster on paper, and then we're gonna
- 33:15Speaker 2: get into what you're seeing on the field in the spring.
- 33:17Speaker 2: But like this has to be a dream commetry you
- 33:19Speaker 2: also have Algier the other running back who I love
- 33:21Speaker 2: that at BYU. They guys can can gobble up yards.
- 33:24Speaker 2: If you guys have a loaded roster on offense, it
- 33:25Speaker 2: just hasn't all come together yet. That's a great place
- 33:27Speaker 2: to walk into.
- 33:28Speaker 6: No, one hundred percent, definitely very fortunate to walk into
- 33:31Speaker 6: a situation like this doesn't happen very often.
- 33:34Speaker 3: You know.
- 33:34Speaker 6: The one thing that we weren't sure about, you know
- 33:36Speaker 6: obviously when Rob got the job and we were coming
- 33:39Speaker 6: with him, was the quarterback.
- 33:41Speaker 3: I got solved with signing Kirk.
- 33:42Speaker 6: And so if you were to say, which job is
- 33:45Speaker 6: the best job out there, and Kirk Cousins is a quarterback,
- 33:48Speaker 6: You're like, I mean, it's it's obviously a no brainer.
- 33:50Speaker 6: It's a really good spot to be. So very lucky
- 33:52Speaker 6: that we got some great guys. The guys here personnel wise,
- 33:56Speaker 6: you know, Terry, Kyle Smith, Ryan Pace, those guys have
- 33:59Speaker 6: done an unbelievable job. As similar to roster, it's a
- 34:02Speaker 6: bunch of great guys that love football, very similar to
- 34:04Speaker 6: how it was set up in LA.
- 34:05Speaker 3: Just like gys that love ball. You know that are
- 34:09Speaker 3: you know, really talented?
- 34:10Speaker 6: So uh, you look at John you look at Drake,
- 34:13Speaker 6: you look at Kyle Pitts, and then the offensive line
- 34:16Speaker 6: is really what makes that thing go.
- 34:17Speaker 3: And so, uh, guys, yeah, I mean you go left
- 34:21Speaker 3: to right. Jake Jake Matthews looks like he might play
- 34:24Speaker 3: another ten years.
- 34:25Speaker 6: Honestly, I mean he looks great. He's had an unbelievable career.
- 34:29Speaker 6: Matthew burg around the left guard, second year out of Syracuse.
- 34:33Speaker 6: He's going to continue to make sures. Expect him to
- 34:35Speaker 6: be one of the better guards in the league. Drew Dolmen,
- 34:37Speaker 6: the center from Stanford, fourth round pick. We loved him
- 34:39Speaker 6: in LA when he was coming out and so and
- 34:42Speaker 6: then you got the best guard in football in Lindstrom
- 34:46Speaker 6: who his his work ethic and just the way that
- 34:48Speaker 6: he plays the game is just like he doesn't have
- 34:50Speaker 6: to say anything, but you see hit the way that
- 34:52Speaker 6: he plays and that raises everybody's level.
- 34:54Speaker 3: Uh.
- 34:55Speaker 6: And then you got big Caleb McGarry over there, the
- 34:57Speaker 6: right tackle, who's a monster. So having that that solidified
- 35:01Speaker 6: is his big time, especially for you know, for the
- 35:04Speaker 6: QBS and for for us in the game. You know,
- 35:08Speaker 6: being able to hold up up front, we should be
- 35:10Speaker 6: able to run the football. So there's a lot of
- 35:12Speaker 6: great things, got a long way to go. It was
- 35:15Speaker 6: pumped about where we left the spring off. But shoot,
- 35:17Speaker 6: as you know, and you're one of the system, like
- 35:19Speaker 6: there's there's so many things.
- 35:20Speaker 3: To cover, and so we still got a long way
- 35:23Speaker 3: to go.
- 35:23Speaker 6: Wish we could actually start tomorrow just to make sure
- 35:26Speaker 6: we get everything going, But we got we got plenty of.
- 35:29Speaker 2: Time, long way to go. First, you're in the system,
- 35:31Speaker 2: and yet no one has seen it on film yet,
- 35:33Speaker 2: which gives you an advantage as well. Bjean Robinson, just
- 35:37Speaker 2: take a minute to just what you looked at in college,
- 35:39Speaker 2: what you looked at last year, and just I have
- 35:42Speaker 2: to imagine when you're an offensive coordinator and you're given
- 35:44Speaker 2: something like that, that talent passing game, the running game,
- 35:48Speaker 2: the blocking game, like you have to be just like,
- 35:51Speaker 2: how do I limit my usage on this guy because
- 35:53Speaker 2: I want to use it every single play?
- 35:55Speaker 6: Yeah, no doubt, one hundred percent. That's that's that is Honestly,
- 35:58Speaker 6: it's a it's a good problem to have.
- 35:59Speaker 3: But you're exactly right. But the first time.
- 36:01Speaker 6: I saw Bijeon was we had a bye week in
- 36:05Speaker 6: twenty twenty two, went back to Oklahoma State. They were
- 36:09Speaker 6: playing Texas that week. Had a bunch of family that
- 36:11Speaker 6: was there, so went to the game. Had known Bijon
- 36:14Speaker 6: because I watched a ton of college football, but seeing
- 36:17Speaker 6: him play in person, I was like, you can give
- 36:19Speaker 6: this ball and you can get his got a ball
- 36:20Speaker 6: every single play and he's gonna make a play. And
- 36:22Speaker 6: I think he had one hundred and fifty yards rushing
- 36:25Speaker 6: over fifty yards receiving.
- 36:27Speaker 3: I mean, they end up losing the game. The Yewers
- 36:30Speaker 3: threw a few.
- 36:30Speaker 6: Picks in Oklhoma State won, But that was my first
- 36:35Speaker 6: time seeing him play in person.
- 36:36Speaker 3: I was like, this guy's, you know, gonna be an
- 36:38Speaker 3: unbelievable pro.
- 36:39Speaker 6: And then seeing him up close, you know, he was
- 36:41Speaker 6: a little bit banged up in the spring, so we
- 36:43Speaker 6: only got to see just a couple of weeks of him.
- 36:46Speaker 3: But he'll be full go, ready to go once camp starts.
- 36:49Speaker 6: But you just throw on the tape from last year
- 36:51Speaker 6: and his ability to make guys miss and there's really
- 36:55Speaker 6: nothing he can't do.
- 36:57Speaker 3: But it's still.
- 36:58Speaker 6: Priority is like, hey, you're a running back, we can
- 37:01Speaker 6: certainly use you out of the backfield as a receiver.
- 37:04Speaker 6: I mean he can run wide receivers routes, but you
- 37:07Speaker 6: just obviously don't want to overload him too much, like
- 37:09Speaker 6: you were kind of alluding to, but excited to work
- 37:12Speaker 6: with the John's a great, great guy, just loves ball,
- 37:16Speaker 6: like he's watching Christian McCaffrey and watching running backs around
- 37:20Speaker 6: the league. Like he has that mindset that he wants
- 37:21Speaker 6: to be the best. So looking forward to uh, you know,
- 37:24Speaker 6: to give the ball as much as we can to John.
- 37:27Speaker 2: For sure, Kyle Pitts a real early pick for a
- 37:30Speaker 2: tight end. What's interesting with him is that, like he was,
- 37:32Speaker 2: He's got these high expectations. I'm not for sure he's
- 37:34Speaker 2: ever going to reach what people expected of him, but
- 37:38Speaker 2: he still puts up numbers, he still has good season.
- 37:40Speaker 2: It's like, are you excited to get your hands on
- 37:42Speaker 2: Kyle Pitts and kind of get the most out of him?
- 37:44Speaker 3: Yeah, one hundred percent.
- 37:45Speaker 6: I think Kyle is excited to First of all, you know,
- 37:49Speaker 6: he was banged up a little.
- 37:50Speaker 3: Bit last year, so he was, you know, battling through
- 37:53Speaker 3: some injuries. And but from.
- 37:55Speaker 6: The jump, right when you know we got the job here,
- 37:58Speaker 6: Kyle was like one of the first ones in the
- 38:00Speaker 6: building coming It's up to raw saying you know, sitting
- 38:03Speaker 6: in my office hanging out with t J. Yeats and
- 38:06Speaker 6: Kevin Koger new tight end coach like he was around
- 38:10Speaker 6: in you know, March and before the guys even got there.
- 38:13Speaker 6: So his level of urgency, he wants to take that
- 38:16Speaker 6: next step. He wants to be a complete tight end.
- 38:18Speaker 6: I think it's underrated how good of a blocker he
- 38:21Speaker 6: actually is. You know, you see, you know the receiver skills,
- 38:23Speaker 6: but you know, when he wants to put his hand
- 38:26Speaker 6: on the ground and block, he can do it. He
- 38:28Speaker 6: wants to he wants to do it all and that's well,
- 38:31Speaker 6: that's what we'll do with him.
- 38:33Speaker 3: But excited for him to take a big step.
- 38:35Speaker 6: I know he's he's chomping at the bit to kind
- 38:37Speaker 6: of get some a little bit of a bad taste
- 38:39Speaker 6: out of his mouth from last year, which a lot
- 38:41Speaker 6: of it, like I said, was injuries, but no pump to.
- 38:44Speaker 3: Work with him. Seeing the rapport that him and Kirk
- 38:46Speaker 3: got going during the spring a little bit was encouraging.
- 38:49Speaker 3: So it's all positive for Kyle.
- 38:51Speaker 2: All right, let's go through the timeline real quick.
- 38:53Speaker 3: Here.
- 38:53Speaker 2: You get the job in January. February's the combine March
- 38:58Speaker 2: you guys signed Kirk Cousins April's to draft. Do you
- 39:02Speaker 2: remember like the fifteen minutes at the combine with Michael Pennix?
- 39:06Speaker 2: Is there a fifteen minute meeting like I I just
- 39:09Speaker 2: take me through the Cousin's pick and then when did
- 39:12Speaker 2: you have a feeling that, Okay, Pennis, there's something to
- 39:15Speaker 2: this kid if he's there at eight as well?
- 39:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I think we u So we sent so TJ.
- 39:20Speaker 6: Yates and ken zaymps went to the combine and interviewed
- 39:23Speaker 6: all those quarterbacks. So we you know, videoed it and
- 39:27Speaker 6: we ended up watching it later on that night after
- 39:29Speaker 6: we interviewed. Mike had known about you know, Mike just
- 39:33Speaker 6: from watching college football and obviously Washington was on a
- 39:37Speaker 6: ton over the last couple of years, and I mean
- 39:39Speaker 6: you're seeing all the explosive plays that him and those
- 39:41Speaker 6: three receivers are making, you know, all over the place,
- 39:44Speaker 6: and so you know, you're studying the film and you
- 39:47Speaker 6: signed Kirk, and you're you're so pumped about that to
- 39:50Speaker 6: have a guy like Kirk that's, you know, comfortable with
- 39:53Speaker 6: the system, obviously playing some of the better football that
- 39:57Speaker 6: he's he's played throughout the last couple of years really
- 39:59Speaker 6: his entire career, So look forward to him, you know,
- 40:02Speaker 6: continue to do that. And then the ability to add
- 40:05Speaker 6: Mike was unique obviously, you know, we felt felt strongly
- 40:09Speaker 6: about it. Uh in that position. I think it's been
- 40:12Speaker 6: well documented. Just the ability for him to sit and
- 40:15Speaker 6: learn and watch and soak everything up before he would
- 40:18Speaker 6: have to play whenever that ends up being was a positive.
- 40:21Speaker 3: But you know, I remember watching the Texas game, uh,
- 40:25Speaker 3: you know that they played, and he was he was
- 40:28Speaker 3: lights out in that game. And then you really start diving.
- 40:31Speaker 6: Into the film and you're watching it throughout the spring
- 40:34Speaker 6: and uh you're seeing kind of you know, how things
- 40:37Speaker 6: could piece together with this offense, and you got Kirk
- 40:39Speaker 6: and then you know, being able to add Mike was uh,
- 40:43Speaker 6: you know, too too good to pass up. So pumped
- 40:46Speaker 6: to have both those guys because shoot, as you know,
- 40:48Speaker 6: like you got you gotta have, you gotta have one,
- 40:52Speaker 6: you gotta have two and and so we feel great
- 40:54Speaker 6: about both those guys there.
- 40:56Speaker 2: But people were going bonkers after the pick about how
- 40:58Speaker 2: ridiculous it was. But if you didn't have a pass
- 41:00Speaker 2: rusher ranked as high as Panix and he's sitting there
- 41:03Speaker 2: at eight and you like him. You gotta thinks coming
- 41:06Speaker 2: off in injuries thirty six and you know, the last
- 41:09Speaker 2: few years in Atlanta, they've been in kirk quarterback purgatory.
- 41:11Speaker 2: That's how I looked at it. And it's all right.
- 41:13Speaker 2: Now we've got two options and one guy for the
- 41:15Speaker 2: long term future. Now that's easier said than done as
- 41:18Speaker 2: a coach. There might be some egos you have to
- 41:20Speaker 2: massage a bit too. What has been a dialogue with
- 41:23Speaker 2: those guys in the quarterback room or it's it all.
- 41:24Speaker 3: Just been cool.
- 41:25Speaker 2: Everyone's been understanding of the situation they come in or
- 41:28Speaker 2: did you come in with a game plan being like
- 41:29Speaker 2: I want to get Pennix's reps during the spring and
- 41:32Speaker 2: get him going, But we have to focus on Kirk.
- 41:34Speaker 2: He's our guy.
- 41:35Speaker 6: Yeah, No, everything has been Taylor round Kirk like that
- 41:38Speaker 6: is that is where we're going, That's what's that's what
- 41:41Speaker 6: we're doing. And Mike is such a humble guy. Kirk
- 41:44Speaker 6: obviously one of the best guys I've ever been around.
- 41:47Speaker 3: Just in life.
- 41:49Speaker 6: So those two guys could not mesh better together just
- 41:52Speaker 6: because of who they are as people. And so Mike's
- 41:55Speaker 6: come in, Uh, he knows you know where he's standing,
- 41:58Speaker 6: he's got a long way to go. He's learning, He's
- 42:00Speaker 6: observing Kirk with everything he does. Mike doesn't have to
- 42:03Speaker 6: say a bunch of meetings. He's just listening to Kirk.
- 42:06Speaker 6: And then he's got a great way of knowing when
- 42:08Speaker 6: to ask something and when to just kind of take
- 42:11Speaker 6: a step back and let Kirk go.
- 42:13Speaker 3: So their dynamic has been good.
- 42:15Speaker 6: You're constantly competing, whether you're competing against the other guys
- 42:19Speaker 6: on other rosters or the guys that are currently on
- 42:21Speaker 6: your roster, like that brings out the best in everybody,
- 42:24Speaker 6: and that's shoot, that's goes for you, that goes for me,
- 42:26Speaker 6: that goes for everybody. So whenever you have that good
- 42:29Speaker 6: competitive urgency, you know it's a good thing. So both
- 42:32Speaker 6: guys will channel out the right way. But like I mentioned,
- 42:35Speaker 6: both just like humble guys a lot of fun to
- 42:38Speaker 6: be around and obviously super talented and a lot of
- 42:40Speaker 6: fun to just watch play quarterbacks.
- 42:42Speaker 3: So it's good.
- 42:43Speaker 2: I love watching left handed quarterbacks. Has Penix unleashed a
- 42:46Speaker 2: pass in camp or around the facility at any point
- 42:49Speaker 2: where you're just like, oh, that's just so pretty. Because
- 42:53Speaker 2: I saw him at the combine I took a video
- 42:55Speaker 2: of it him in like the hotel, just like whipping
- 42:59Speaker 2: these perfect and then a yeah, yeah, dude, Like it's like,
- 43:03Speaker 2: I don't know what it is, if it's a lefty
- 43:04Speaker 2: or if it's the way he releases the ball. I
- 43:06Speaker 2: think he's already got one of the prettiest passes.
- 43:08Speaker 3: In all of football.
- 43:10Speaker 2: And I watched it for many years at Indiana, then
- 43:12Speaker 2: of course Washington, like seeing it up close Pennix, just
- 43:15Speaker 2: letting that thing release with that spin. Is it that special?
- 43:19Speaker 3: Yeah, He's a pure pere thrower, as pure of a
- 43:21Speaker 3: guy that I've been around, just strictly throwing the football.
- 43:25Speaker 3: So I'm with you.
- 43:26Speaker 6: There's been times where you know, he makes something happen
- 43:29Speaker 6: and you're kind of looking around, like.
- 43:31Speaker 3: Man, that was a pretty special throw.
- 43:32Speaker 6: So he's definitely got that going for him. He's got
- 43:36Speaker 6: some great instincts, sees the field.
- 43:38Speaker 3: Well, so but like I mentioned, got a long way
- 43:40Speaker 3: to go with this whole thing. But he definitely definitely
- 43:44Speaker 3: can throw the football, and that's one of the reasons
- 43:46Speaker 3: we were excited to get him.
- 43:48Speaker 2: And Kirk has taken it in stride, and Kirk's in
- 43:51Speaker 2: the right place going into July, I would imagine as
- 43:53Speaker 2: a training camps advance.
- 43:54Speaker 6: Yeah, Kirk had a great great spring really took you know,
- 43:58Speaker 6: especially for us as new coaches coming in and when
- 44:01Speaker 6: you have a quarterback that has as much.
- 44:04Speaker 3: Experience as he does, especially in the system.
- 44:07Speaker 6: I mean, there were days that Kirk just grabbed the
- 44:09Speaker 6: entire group when we couldn't be out there with the
- 44:11Speaker 6: guys and he's taken guys through jogg throughs and he's
- 44:14Speaker 6: coaching them up on the routes. And so the comfortability
- 44:17Speaker 6: that you know I have and the rest of the coaching.
- 44:19Speaker 3: Staff has with with Kirk.
- 44:21Speaker 6: And how he can just his ownership just with everything
- 44:24Speaker 6: that he does and his intent behind everything.
- 44:27Speaker 3: So he had a great spring. Was fun to see
- 44:29Speaker 3: him and washed him for so long.
- 44:31Speaker 6: Yeah, always just respected the way that he plays the
- 44:34Speaker 6: game and the way that he sees it and how
- 44:35Speaker 6: he can click through progression and how accurate he is.
- 44:39Speaker 6: But then you finally see it up close and you're like, man,
- 44:41Speaker 6: there's some days you come off the field and like
- 44:43Speaker 6: everything's gonna be fine because this guy. As long as
- 44:45Speaker 6: we distribute the field and you know, have sound schemes
- 44:49Speaker 6: running the football, throwing the football. This guy can make
- 44:52Speaker 6: a lot of things right. So it was really fun
- 44:54Speaker 6: to just finally get working with Kirk and we'll just
- 44:57Speaker 6: continue to build that rapport with the rest of the
- 45:00Speaker 6: guys and I'll get, you know, continue to get a
- 45:03Speaker 6: feel for what he likes and those type of things.
- 45:05Speaker 3: So it's all really good. Though.
- 45:07Speaker 2: It's cool that you have a veteran quarterback. I feel
- 45:09Speaker 2: like you and Stafford spoke the same language, and really
- 45:13Speaker 2: since he got to the Rams, of course, Kevin was
- 45:15Speaker 2: there and then you took over that kind of role
- 45:18Speaker 2: in his ear with Sean. Of course, Like the connective
- 45:20Speaker 2: tissue is not so Kevin O'Connell and you work together.
- 45:23Speaker 2: Kevin O'Connell's just coach Cousins the last several seasons. Raheem
- 45:26Speaker 2: probably was on staff in Washington when Cousins was there,
- 45:30Speaker 2: I would imagine, right, yes, yep, yeah, and McVeigh was,
- 45:33Speaker 2: you know, on staff there as well. So this is
- 45:37Speaker 2: no like there's enough connective tissue where you and Cousins
- 45:40Speaker 2: have so many people in common that this has to
- 45:42Speaker 2: be pretty cool that you could finally get together and
- 45:44Speaker 2: now instead of having rookie quarterback, which you could have
- 45:47Speaker 2: easily had as a first year offensive coordinator in slow
- 45:50Speaker 2: a cadet last year. It's no, I've got thirty six
- 45:52Speaker 2: year old veteran who has seen it all and also
- 45:54Speaker 2: knows a lot of the same people that I do.
- 45:56Speaker 3: A hundred percent.
- 45:57Speaker 6: No, we've been able to talk about different relationships with
- 46:00Speaker 6: guys or what they called something in Minnesota. Hey, we
- 46:04Speaker 6: call that here and call that this now, and so
- 46:06Speaker 6: that's been so easy to talk with Kirk about, you know,
- 46:09Speaker 6: football stuff, but also just.
- 46:12Speaker 3: Hey, Chris O'Hara was his quarterback coach, and so.
- 46:15Speaker 6: I know Chris O'Hare, you know, just different guys that
- 46:17Speaker 6: you've been around. Hey, what was Wes Phillips like? What
- 46:19Speaker 6: were some of the jokes Wes Phillips told me, you know,
- 46:22Speaker 6: just some of the little little stories that that are
- 46:25Speaker 6: just easy to make connections.
- 46:27Speaker 3: So, no, it's been it's been great to have Kirk
- 46:29Speaker 3: and you know, having a veteran guy that.
- 46:32Speaker 6: Can't wait to just see his his career continue to
- 46:35Speaker 6: go because he's he's playing. Before he got injured last
- 46:37Speaker 6: year and you know, Peter, he was as good as
- 46:40Speaker 6: as lights down back in the league. So I'm excited
- 46:43Speaker 6: to see him just kind of keep that going all.
- 46:45Speaker 2: Right, A couple of rapid fire questions as as we
- 46:48Speaker 2: wrap this. This has been awesome, your best Des Bryant story.
- 46:53Speaker 2: You were his quarterback in college, an absolute freak show
- 46:57Speaker 2: in college and in the NFL. When did Dez show
- 47:00Speaker 2: you that this guy is a step above everybody else
- 47:03Speaker 2: on the field?
- 47:04Speaker 6: Right when he got there as a true freshman and
- 47:06Speaker 6: we knew who he was coming in like as players
- 47:09Speaker 6: were like, oh man, like this guy was a four
- 47:11Speaker 6: star recruit and he could.
- 47:13Speaker 3: Have gone a number of different places.
- 47:14Speaker 6: We end up snagging him, But that first summer, he
- 47:17Speaker 6: would always be like the first guy out on the field.
- 47:19Speaker 3: I always went out there early to start warming up, but.
- 47:22Speaker 6: He was like him and I would like almost be
- 47:24Speaker 6: out there at the exact same time. And he just
- 47:26Speaker 6: loved to play catch, loved to throw, loved to catch.
- 47:29Speaker 6: And so that's when I started kind of getting a
- 47:31Speaker 6: feel for him. And you know, he would run some
- 47:34Speaker 6: routes sometimes where like he would change his tempo. Like
- 47:37Speaker 6: I remember throwing him like an in cut, like a
- 47:39Speaker 6: twelve yard incut, and he came out of it and
- 47:41Speaker 6: I thought I was putting it at a place, you know,
- 47:43Speaker 6: right out in front of him.
- 47:44Speaker 3: He ended up speeding up and just to.
- 47:46Speaker 6: Catch it like one handed on his shold, like totally unnecessary,
- 47:50Speaker 6: but his routes on air and he's just showing off
- 47:52Speaker 6: like the stuff he could do. And obviously the stuff
- 47:55Speaker 6: above the rim that he could do was unlike really
- 47:58Speaker 6: anybody in college football.
- 47:59Speaker 3: Man it was. He's a special guy.
- 48:01Speaker 6: But he loved football, loved just playing catch. During the summer.
- 48:07Speaker 6: I think that's where our report really kind of skyrocketed.
- 48:10Speaker 6: We just I'd throw something up and see what he
- 48:12Speaker 6: can do. He could you see the spots that he
- 48:14Speaker 6: could get to it, and but yeah, he just he
- 48:17Speaker 6: just loved throwing and catching, being around football.
- 48:21Speaker 3: Just total ball guy.
- 48:22Speaker 6: And then as a competitor, I haven't really been around
- 48:25Speaker 6: many guys like Daz.
- 48:27Speaker 2: I had Kellen Moore on last summer and he was
- 48:29Speaker 2: talking about his favorite Matthew Stafford throws when he was
- 48:32Speaker 2: his backup in Detroit. Your favorite Matthew Stafford pass if
- 48:36Speaker 2: you can go through them all, whether it be big
- 48:38Speaker 2: clutch passes in the playoffs a couple of years ago
- 48:41Speaker 2: or something you saw in camp, what's your Stafford memory
- 48:45Speaker 2: of just the freak show that is Matthew Stafford.
- 48:47Speaker 6: I mean the Super Bowl, no look is in that
- 48:50Speaker 6: moment was unbelievable. I couldn't believe how he can no
- 48:54Speaker 6: look those with receivers going from right to left and
- 48:57Speaker 6: his eyes being this way and throwing it that way
- 48:59Speaker 6: while still keeping the ball out in front.
- 49:02Speaker 3: I mean some of those that you.
- 49:03Speaker 6: Would see in practice every day. Matthew and I were
- 49:05Speaker 6: teammates in Detroit in twenty ten as I was, you know,
- 49:10Speaker 6: making my way around, and.
- 49:12Speaker 3: I'll never forget. He was injured the first year I
- 49:15Speaker 3: was there, and that was the reason I got to Detroit.
- 49:18Speaker 3: He separated his shoulder.
- 49:19Speaker 6: I was with Seattle on their practice squad, so Detroit
- 49:23Speaker 6: claimed me off of waivers, and so I.
- 49:25Speaker 3: Was there the rest of the season. Matthew wasn't playing.
- 49:28Speaker 6: But then fast forward to training camp or yeah, to
- 49:32Speaker 6: training camp, and that was the first time I got
- 49:34Speaker 6: to see Matthew really play up close. I'd seen him throw.
- 49:36Speaker 6: We went to the Man camp together. I see him throw,
- 49:40Speaker 6: you know, up close and personal for the first time.
- 49:42Speaker 3: When I was a.
- 49:43Speaker 6: Sophomore in college and he was going into his junior year,
- 49:46Speaker 6: and I was like, that looks different than anything I've
- 49:49Speaker 6: ever seen, and so I went back and I was like,
- 49:52Speaker 6: I got no shot at playing in the NFL.
- 49:53Speaker 3: This is what it looks like.
- 49:55Speaker 6: But I do remember one throwing specific when I was
- 49:58Speaker 6: in Detroit with Matthew Calvin Johnson was basically ran in
- 50:03Speaker 6: like a corner pump and it was a cover two look.
- 50:07Speaker 6: Matthew looked off the safety one way, looked off the
- 50:10Speaker 6: safety the other way. Calvin did his job on the
- 50:13Speaker 6: route and I was standing right behind it, and this
- 50:16Speaker 6: ball went seventy yards in the air, perfect spiral, Calvin
- 50:21Speaker 6: just instride, and I'll never forget what that looked like
- 50:24Speaker 6: coming out of his hand.
- 50:25Speaker 3: It was just like seventy yards superhuman?
- 50:29Speaker 2: Who is that against? We'll have the clip.
- 50:32Speaker 6: We no, this was this is just in practice training,
- 50:34Speaker 6: can't practice. Was just I was like, you know, something
- 50:39Speaker 6: you just never see. But some of the ones in
- 50:42Speaker 6: games last year, yeah, there was so many. There were
- 50:46Speaker 6: so many throws he had, but that one definitely sticks
- 50:49Speaker 6: out just as a player watching it and knowing like
- 50:52Speaker 6: what it's supposed to look like. Obviously, no pure thrower
- 50:56Speaker 6: in the history of the game really has been.
- 50:58Speaker 2: Matthew Odell comes a couple of years ago and he
- 51:02Speaker 2: comes with all this hoopla and then he gets there
- 51:04Speaker 2: and it's just like an awesome player for the Los
- 51:07Speaker 2: Angeles Rams, and really, I know the love that that
- 51:09Speaker 2: franchise has for him for the one season he was there.
- 51:12Speaker 2: Your thoughts on Odell, your memories of Odell, and maybe
- 51:14Speaker 2: a good Odell story.
- 51:16Speaker 6: Yeah, he you know, came in and right off, right
- 51:20Speaker 6: off the bat, like just fit in with the guys,
- 51:22Speaker 6: Like didn't really know. You don't know what somebody's like
- 51:25Speaker 6: until they're actually in the building, whether that's coach, player
- 51:27Speaker 6: or anything. You can hear whatever you want, but as
- 51:30Speaker 6: soon as you get to know, the guy just brought
- 51:33Speaker 6: a ton of juice to our to our offense. I
- 51:35Speaker 6: mean just obviously he's got the most swag in the
- 51:38Speaker 6: history of the game. Maybe, but he came in and
- 51:41Speaker 6: there was you know, a little learning curve those first
- 51:43Speaker 6: couple of weeks for some reason.
- 51:47Speaker 3: You know, I was playing catch.
- 51:48Speaker 6: Like pre game one day, and uh so then from
- 51:51Speaker 6: that point forward, like I was kind of your game
- 51:54Speaker 6: throwing guy, and so the stuff that I would see
- 51:58Speaker 6: from him in pregame warmups, like obviously he wasn't doing
- 52:02Speaker 6: like with the Giants, like he was going to the
- 52:04Speaker 6: back of the end zone and doing all that. At
- 52:06Speaker 6: this point, he was just a little more casual, but
- 52:08Speaker 6: still you know, pulling in one handers but.
- 52:12Speaker 3: Not jumping, you know, like he was back in New York.
- 52:16Speaker 3: But I do remember throwing.
- 52:17Speaker 6: A ball to him in pregame warm ups before the
- 52:21Speaker 6: before the Niner game.
- 52:22Speaker 3: The first game he was there.
- 52:24Speaker 6: And I was standing on the right side the pregame
- 52:27Speaker 6: warm ups like we're on the team, period, but guys
- 52:29Speaker 6: are kind of you know how the tempo is in pregame,
- 52:32Speaker 6: and he's like, Hey.
- 52:33Speaker 3: I'm gonna go on this one a little bit. I
- 52:35Speaker 3: was like, all right, And so I.
- 52:37Speaker 6: Throw him a go ball on the right side and
- 52:39Speaker 6: he's running and he's tracking this thing and I'm like,
- 52:43Speaker 6: it's it's over his outside, Like when.
- 52:45Speaker 3: Is he gonna I'm like, when is he gonna? When
- 52:48Speaker 3: is he going to adjust and and do this?
- 52:49Speaker 6: And he just keeps striding like this, and then he
- 52:52Speaker 6: just goes and he just plucks it with his right
- 52:54Speaker 6: hand and just keeps keeps going.
- 52:56Speaker 3: I like turned around and as Zero Everro was standing
- 52:59Speaker 3: back there like what the hell was that? You know,
- 53:01Speaker 3: like we just that.
- 53:02Speaker 6: The ball skills that he had. I've never seen like
- 53:05Speaker 6: an athlete like him. Like we play catch, I'd throw
- 53:07Speaker 6: it to him, he'd throw one back right handed. Next
- 53:09Speaker 6: time you'd throw one left handed. Yeah, next time. Next
- 53:12Speaker 6: time you would punt it right footed and it'd be
- 53:14Speaker 6: like perfect, And then the next time you would punt
- 53:16Speaker 6: it left footed, it would be I mean, he just
- 53:19Speaker 6: got some unbelievable just hand eye and he's just a
- 53:22Speaker 6: great athlete. But he brought so much juice that season.
- 53:25Speaker 3: Man, he's freaking. He's just stud.
- 53:27Speaker 2: Loves football but also loves fashion, loves soccer. I still
- 53:31Speaker 2: think he's like the NFL's renaissance man. And I was
- 53:34Speaker 2: in Miami, so I'm curiously how that goes. But like
- 53:36Speaker 2: I thought, I loved the odell Era in LA and
- 53:39Speaker 2: I know how much you guys appreciate him.
- 53:40Speaker 3: Yeah, it was great. He was a big reason where
- 53:43Speaker 3: you know, obviously we're able to get there.
- 53:46Speaker 2: Last couple the big pass to Cooper Cup that Stafford
- 53:49Speaker 2: throws against Tampa and the playoffs, where were you for
- 53:52Speaker 2: that pass? And what'd you think when you guys actually
- 53:54Speaker 2: pulled that off?
- 53:55Speaker 3: Yeah, it was, first of all, great call by Sean
- 53:58Speaker 3: going tempo in that moment, ball was out of bounds
- 54:01Speaker 3: on the left side on Tampa sideline, and Sean, you know, typically, hey,
- 54:05Speaker 3: out of bounds two minutes real, let's huddle up. Sean
- 54:08Speaker 3: had a feeling.
- 54:10Speaker 6: We ended up just getting right on the ball, and
- 54:12Speaker 6: so you know, it's well documented as a cover zero.
- 54:15Speaker 3: Look, I was standing. I always stood kind of even
- 54:17Speaker 3: with the with the ball based like a little bit
- 54:20Speaker 3: behind it, and so you're kind of watching our guys,
- 54:23Speaker 3: You're watching the back end, and you saw it went
- 54:26Speaker 3: to you know, cover zero, and you're like, you know.
- 54:29Speaker 2: Right away, you guys aren't freaking out like covers like
- 54:32Speaker 2: we have.
- 54:32Speaker 6: This is Yeah, it was like it was like a
- 54:35Speaker 6: but it happened so fast that you're kind of just
- 54:37Speaker 6: like hoping that you see it right like and you know, yeah,
- 54:40Speaker 6: you know he's gonna see it because he sees everything.
- 54:43Speaker 6: But yeah, that the ball traveling through the air like
- 54:46Speaker 6: once Matthew spotted it, and you know, obviously the trajectory
- 54:49Speaker 6: and the ball that he threw, the ball seemed like
- 54:52Speaker 6: it was in the air for like ten seconds, but
- 54:54Speaker 6: obviously drops in the bucket. But yeah, definitely was a
- 54:58Speaker 6: memory all always you know have and we'll always have
- 55:01Speaker 6: just how that happened. Seeing the juice that Matthew had
- 55:06Speaker 6: after completed that coming to the sideline like he said
- 55:08Speaker 6: some stuff. I was like, you were in a dark
- 55:10Speaker 6: place man, like he was. He was feeling it, and
- 55:13Speaker 6: so it was. It was pretty cool. That locker room
- 55:15Speaker 6: celebration was awesome. But yeah, what unbelievable play by those
- 55:19Speaker 6: two guys in that moment to make that happen was
- 55:22Speaker 6: pretty cool.
- 55:23Speaker 2: That rivalry you guys had with the Niners these past
- 55:26Speaker 2: several years, and you go back and forth and then
- 55:28Speaker 2: finally you guys beat him in the playoff game and
- 55:30Speaker 2: then they go back to the Super Bowl and it's
- 55:32Speaker 2: it's heated. Now you're in the NFC South, Is it
- 55:36Speaker 2: strange for you to be like, all right, I need
- 55:37Speaker 2: to kind of readjust and there's now three other teams
- 55:40Speaker 2: that I have to kind of look at and be
- 55:42Speaker 2: like those are our chief rivals or that does that
- 55:44Speaker 2: Niners logo still as we sit here in July just
- 55:47Speaker 2: just rub you wrong.
- 55:49Speaker 6: No, it's that's not that those games were so physical,
- 55:52Speaker 6: so intense.
- 55:53Speaker 3: You knew the week leading up, like he was like, man, okay,
- 55:55Speaker 3: balk of your Chintz straps. It's you know, playing the Niners.
- 55:58Speaker 6: That'll always kind of just just the way that those
- 56:00Speaker 6: guys play football and the way that Kyle.
- 56:02Speaker 3: Gets those guys going.
- 56:04Speaker 6: You know, no matter if you're in the division or
- 56:06Speaker 6: out of the division, you always got your eyes on
- 56:08Speaker 6: the Niners. But yeah, it's definitely been different resetting than
- 56:11Speaker 6: seeing this group of guys that feel like, you know
- 56:14Speaker 6: Tampa pretty well, just we played them so many times
- 56:16Speaker 6: in the last handful of years and then played in
- 56:19Speaker 6: New Orleans last year.
- 56:20Speaker 3: Carolina don't know much about.
- 56:21Speaker 6: But it's cool because we do have some coaches on
- 56:23Speaker 6: staff that I've been here for the last three years,
- 56:27Speaker 6: so I'm you know, I'm looking at it like, hey,
- 56:28Speaker 6: who's who's fifty nine here, and they're able to kind
- 56:31Speaker 6: of give a little bit of a scoop on on
- 56:33Speaker 6: on different players and so, but yeah, it's different resetting.
- 56:37Speaker 6: You know that you get to know that division so well,
- 56:39Speaker 6: you're there for five years. You know the Cardinals, you
- 56:41Speaker 6: know the Seahawks, you know, you know the the evolving
- 56:44Speaker 6: you know door that's come with the defensive backs for
- 56:47Speaker 6: the Niners, and so learning a new you know, a
- 56:51Speaker 6: new division, is definitely gonna be a little bit different,
- 56:53Speaker 6: but it's also you know, good challenge at the same time.
- 56:57Speaker 2: Last question, we are now a week really a week
- 57:01Speaker 2: and a half away from stepping in there and giving
- 57:03Speaker 2: the first you know, training camp, team meetings and all that.
- 57:06Speaker 2: As we head towards your first season as an offensive coordinator,
- 57:09Speaker 2: your first season with the Atlanta Falcons, what would be
- 57:12Speaker 2: your message to Falcons fans about the offense that they
- 57:14Speaker 2: can expect.
- 57:16Speaker 3: Yeah, we're you know, anticipating playing an exciting brand of football.
- 57:20Speaker 3: We want to play fast before the snap, after the snap.
- 57:23Speaker 3: We want to play physical, we want to be aggressive
- 57:26Speaker 3: at all times.
- 57:26Speaker 6: We want to play with greatergency, we want to mix
- 57:28Speaker 6: the tempo. So hopefully we can put this thing together.
- 57:32Speaker 6: Got a great group of guys to do it. Got
- 57:35Speaker 6: a long way to go, got training camp, and we
- 57:36Speaker 6: got to get just our identity and our foundation really set.
- 57:41Speaker 6: We left the offseason, like I mentioned earlier, in a
- 57:44Speaker 6: great spot. Now we just got to pick it up,
- 57:45Speaker 6: and that level of emergency just got to got to
- 57:48Speaker 6: crank up a little bit. But I can expect, you know,
- 57:51Speaker 6: we're gonna throw the football, We're gonna put the ball
- 57:53Speaker 6: in the air. We're also gonna be able to control
- 57:54Speaker 6: the ball, run the football hopefully. So it should be
- 57:57Speaker 6: an exciting season and we can't wait to get going.
- 58:01Speaker 2: Should I take b John Robinson first overall in fantasy football?
- 58:04Speaker 3: Would that be the thing about fans? I hear you me?
- 58:08Speaker 6: Neither.
- 58:08Speaker 2: I tried. I tried making a statement that would like
- 58:10Speaker 2: go viral.
- 58:10Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 58:11Speaker 2: I don't play fantasy either.
- 58:12Speaker 3: It was a bad attempt, but I mean probably, I mean,
- 58:16Speaker 3: I don't know why not. He's good.
- 58:18Speaker 2: Yeah, good Zach Robinson. This was so fun. Thank you
- 58:22Speaker 2: for the hour. I also think we learned a lot.
- 58:25Speaker 2: The PFF stuff is really cool really as we wrap
- 58:27Speaker 2: anything you've taken from those days that you apply today.
- 58:32Speaker 6: Yeah, there's certain you know, data that you might look
- 58:36Speaker 6: at that you kind of like, you know, you're you're
- 58:39Speaker 6: obviously you know football is football, and you're always going
- 58:42Speaker 6: to learn off the tape, but there are some things
- 58:44Speaker 6: just from a data standpoint that that you can look
- 58:47Speaker 6: at that might that might help you out. But the
- 58:50Speaker 6: way those guys really opened up your mind to looking
- 58:53Speaker 6: at football in a different way, which I think is
- 58:55Speaker 6: always cool. Like nobody's ever going to be stuck. There's
- 58:58Speaker 6: there's not just one way to do it, and so
- 59:00Speaker 6: just seeing kind of their perspective from a you know,
- 59:03Speaker 6: analytical side.
- 59:05Speaker 3: And some of the siveness, whether it be on fourth
- 59:07Speaker 3: downs or you know.
- 59:09Speaker 6: Two point whatever it might be. Those things creep in
- 59:12Speaker 6: your mind a little bit knowing what you know the
- 59:15Speaker 6: PFF analytics might say, but you're obviously going to make
- 59:18Speaker 6: those judgments based on different situations and it's not just
- 59:22Speaker 6: a black and white thing. But definitely grateful for those
- 59:26Speaker 6: guys and Neil Hornsby, who founded PFF, was instrumental and
- 59:31Speaker 6: just you know, my development of just watching football and
- 59:35Speaker 6: being able to have the access to everything the PFF had.
- 59:38Speaker 3: So yeah, definitely taking a lot from those guys for sure.
- 59:42Speaker 3: So cool.
- 59:43Speaker 2: I'm wishing you so much luck. You've got about fifteen
- 59:46Speaker 2: days or maybe ten days left. Go enjoy two kids
- 59:49Speaker 2: under the age of two and a new home in Atlanta.
- 59:52Speaker 2: Tell your wife she's a rock star. Zach Robinson, thanks
- 59:55Speaker 2: for joining the podcast.
- 59:56Speaker 3: Man, Thanks, Rake, appreciate you.
- 59:58Speaker 2: Awesome. Zach's awesome. I love the storytime element of all that.
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: And Aaron, I'll bring you back in like that cup
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: pass that Stafford has. It's not going to go down
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: as like the David Tyree helmet catch or the Santonio
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: Holmes in the back of the end zone. But to
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: those guys in that organization, that play is forever, and
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: for those fans, that one is forever. And I love
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: how he knows exactly where he was standing the coverage.
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: How Sean McVeigh instead of you know, taking your time
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: after you know, an out of bounds play in a
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: two minute drill, was like, no, no, get to the line.
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: Like all those details this is now three years removed
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: and they're still crystal clear. For Zach Robinson, I.
- 1:00:46Speaker 4: Mean that's sports like that that story, him remembering exactly
- 1:00:50Speaker 4: how he felt on the field seeing the ball, like
- 1:00:53Speaker 4: him saying like it felt like the ball was in
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: the air for ten seconds.
- 1:00:57Speaker 5: I loved that. That was that was incredible.
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: Yeah, did you think he danced around the Cousins Penick
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: stuff or was he pretty much straight? It sounds like
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: it's not even an issue there. But you know, if
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: Kirk Cousins starts out oh and two and they there's
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: two interceptions in both games and Pennix lights up the preseason,
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: like I have to think there's some fans who are like,
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: let's see our rookie quarterback. We drafted eighth overall.
- 1:01:17Speaker 4: I don't know about two games in, but he did
- 1:01:19Speaker 4: a really good I mean, he said they've tailored everything
- 1:01:22Speaker 4: to Kirk, which makes me think that they've tailored everything
- 1:01:25Speaker 4: to Kirk and he's going to be the quarterback. But
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: he also, like you know, pointed out he loved watching
- 1:01:32Speaker 4: Penix throw the ball, So there's definitely some optimism and
- 1:01:35Speaker 4: potential there. I would say it's probably not the rookie
- 1:01:40Speaker 4: quarterback I expect to see first. By any means, Falcons
- 1:01:44Speaker 4: aren't this like that was the word.
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: They're not a sexy pick right now, new coach, new quarterback,
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: no one knows what to expect. But when you do
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: lay it out and you list all those offensive players
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: and you realize that they're bringing a new offensive coach
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: who just was with McVeigh and has all these different
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: bells and whistles to them, and they have a new
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: defensive coach and Rahie Morris and I mean, I'm not
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: an offensive line guru, but like, I didn't think that
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: their offensive line is the best in the game. The
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: way he was talking about it is Atlanta the sleeper pick,
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: Like this is what happens. You talk to these guys
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: and then you start thinking yourself, like, I know, he's like,
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: we have a long way to go. He's set in expectations,
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: but like what if Beejon Robinson's unleashed, and what if
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: Kyle Pitt stepped up? And what if Drake London played
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: like a top ten receiver? And what if Kirk Cousins
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: is like has been like, yes, they can compete in
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: the NFC.
- 1:02:28Speaker 4: That division really doesn't need someone to be incredibly sexy
- 1:02:32Speaker 4: to win too. Like Tampa, you know, just did well.
- 1:02:37Speaker 4: We've got some turnover there as well. And they I
- 1:02:40Speaker 4: think like just because they didn't draft the speediest receiver
- 1:02:44Speaker 4: in the first round this year, or they didn't as
- 1:02:47Speaker 4: rush yeah, like a huge pass rusher. I do think
- 1:02:51Speaker 4: that people are probably downplaying how good they could be.
- 1:02:54Speaker 4: But I also think they have we probably have like
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: take hangover on them that we've been so excited about
- 1:03:01Speaker 4: the happins every offseason and we are so disappointed all
- 1:03:04Speaker 4: the time.
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: Let's not be suppointed, let's be positive. Let's every team's
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: winning the Super Bowl. It's July ninth, We're in on
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: all every team.
- 1:03:12Speaker 5: And we're all getting invites to next year's White Party.
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: No, I'm done. I'm telling you I don't want to go.
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: I don't want to go. If he invited me, i'd
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: say no.
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 1:03:20Speaker 4: I did see the video of Odell like getting dancing
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: on his way to the car to take him to
- 1:03:26Speaker 4: the White Party or something that showed up, and.
- 1:03:28Speaker 5: It's like, that's great.
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: It's great so far.
- 1:03:30Speaker 5: I only know about it through you. Now I have
- 1:03:32Speaker 5: to admit.
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: I know it's good.
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: It's over.
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: We got through it, all right with no further ado.
