- 0:06The Minnesota Twins faced the Kansas City Royals for a Friday night game at Royals Stadium on October 1st, 1976.
- 0:14Minnesota was in third place in the AL West with an 82-77 record under manager Gene Mock in his first season with the Twins.
- 0:22Kansas City was managed by Whitey Herzog and they were the 1976 AL West champs,
- 0:27having just clinched the division one night earlier with a shutout win by Larry Gurra over the A's.
- 0:33This audio recording is from the Kansas City Radio broadcast featuring announcers Denny Matthews and Fred White.
- 1:04Steve, a left hand batter, he's a D8. Doug Byrd's ready and deal.
- 1:09Off speed that's the par ball in his flow. One ball, one strike.
- 1:15Well, will this be the night? Certainly all the ingredients present, including a tremendous shot,
- 1:23Ron Nickson bowled back at the plate and the count went in two.
- 1:28Byrd won it all against the Twins. He beat the Twins here at Royals Stadium back in May by the score of 6-3.
- 1:40The 1-2-5 to Braun on the way.
- 1:42Top ball popped up, back of short, pop that guy, top, pocket in, and it's top, pocket to make the catch for the win.
- 1:55Here's Steve Braun out of the par ball to left field.
- 1:58And here's Roy Wally's with city church stuff. Roy's average, 257, 3-halvers, and 44 RBI.
- 2:12Wally says joining the Twins has just four hits against the Royals.
- 2:17The Royals pitchers have handled him well, he's four out of 32.
- 2:22On the left side of the base against Doug Berher to the pitchers, strike going on.
- 2:27For Doug Berher, this marks his 27th start of the year. It is his third start against the Twins.
- 2:35No balls and a strike.
- 2:37He jumped under way.
- 2:39Back ball, one way, piled away.
- 2:42This would weigh down the left of your line and deep into the lower deck, and the count slowly going two.
- 2:50The most recent outing was a 3-1 loss. That was in Texas on Saturday night, he went 6-0.
- 2:57Back he counts and the pitch just a little bit inside and world.
- 3:01One ball, two strikes. John Watson back to the plate.
- 3:05It was John Watson who caught Larry Cora on Wednesday night in Oakland.
- 3:12One of two to count. Back comes Bird with a fast ball and slowly has to jump back inside. Two balls, two strikes.
- 3:20Doug's last victory came over the A's in the Royal Stadium on the 21st of September.
- 3:27The final score of that meeting, 3-1.
- 3:30The two pitchers slowly going outside, ball three, three and two.
- 3:39John of course, and we've said it about every time he's pitched, just doesn't walk anybody at all.
- 3:44He's walked only 30 this year.
- 3:46Back he comes and a hot shot is passed contact on into left field.
- 3:50Tom Fokette over quickly to come out and holds Smalley to a single.
- 3:56The right Smalley singles to left, one on one out, and here's Rod Carew.
- 4:02Rod hitting 325. Nine homers, 89 RBI.
- 4:12The other item of interest in this series, the batting race, Al McCrae the week leader at 333.
- 4:19And then George Brad at 328. Rod Carew and Wyman Boscott, both of the twins and both hitting 325.
- 4:27So here's Rod Carew, there goes the runner, the hit run is on, and it's bounce pound outside first, going wide.
- 4:34Smalley who is running back to first.
- 4:39Rod with 15 hits against the Royal, 15 out of 48.
- 4:48No ball to strike, Mayberry holding to the runner.
- 4:52Dodge pitchers high, one ball, one strike.
- 5:02The twins have played good ball against the West, they have 148, they've lost 39.
- 5:08So it's in their own division, they've been tough, throw to first, the runner back.
- 5:17The Royal shooting for win number 91 tonight, the runner goes, the 50 Carew bouncing ball face to left field.
- 5:25Smalley around second, puts on the brakes, well kept throws behind him, and he gets back to second base safely.
- 5:32So Rod Carew bounces one between Brad and Patek, and the twins are two aboard one out, and up comes Wyman Boscott.
- 5:40Boscott more than any other Minnesota twin, tough on the Royal, 18 hits, nine RBIs.
- 5:49He has been a terror against the Royal, and especially in Minnesota.
- 5:57So it's slowly at second base, Rod Carew at first, both with bouncing ball opposite field hits.
- 6:04Boscott, Brad for the Patek, looks like a double play, right out, Mayberry, double play.
- 6:20Well, Smalley and Carew got their balls through, but Wyman Boscott not so lucky.
- 6:25Here's a bounce ball, turns into an ending double play.
- 6:29Two hits, no runs, a man left, and that's a half an inning, twins nothing, Royal coming up.
- 6:36Cleveland Blair manager Frank Robinson says he'd like to stay on with the Indians,
- 6:41but as the Indians wind up their best season in years, Robinson remains without a contract.
- 6:47Robinson will not play next year, and the Indians reportedly have offered him $80,000 just to manage.
- 6:54That's a loss of about $100,000 from his reported salary as a Blair manager.
- 7:00Robinson claims money is not the issue, but he declined to testify just what the key problem is.
- 7:08Taking a look at tonight's Major League scorecard, of course we mentioned earlier that doubleheader
- 7:13between the Yankees and Indians was rained out, scheduled in New York, a lot of rain here on the East Coast.
- 7:20Another rain out also, St. Louis at Pittsburgh, a snow bearing whatsoever on the divisional races.
- 7:27It boils down to Kansas City winning it tonight to ramp up the West in the American League.
- 7:32If they don't, then Oakland should win them.
- 7:34Well, it just gets tightened up a little bit more.
- 7:37However, we should point out that Kansas City has least time for the Western Division crown of the American League.
- 7:44If they should end up in the tie, then naturally there would be a playoff between the Royals
- 7:48and the A's to decide who is going to win the West.
- 7:52Other games in the American League, Boston, Leeds, Baltimore, won nothingness after three innings of play.
- 7:58Chicago is scheduled to Texas, now going for the White Sox, his record is 3-1.
- 8:03Humburgers going for Texas, his record is 10-12.
- 8:07Minnesota is at Kansas City in our game here tonight.
- 8:11And Detroit is at Milwaukee, Hiller, and Crappers.
- 8:15We go to the bottom of the first, no score.
- 8:18The man trying to prevent the Royals from nailing down their first Western Division title,
- 8:23his 27-year-old right-hander Dave Golt.
- 8:26Dave is 6-4, weighs 2'10".
- 8:29He is 1-2 against the Royals this year. He has pitched better than that.
- 8:33In his career, five wins and three losses against the Royals.
- 8:38Golt beat the Royals in Minnesota back on May 22, 5-3.
- 8:43It was a complete game and he allowed only three hits and a run in the first.
- 8:47Eight innings, and then allowed two runs in the ninth, but he was very much in command.
- 8:52And then the Royals announced in March, beat Golt for 1-0 in ten-innings, 10-12 on June 29.
- 9:00David's ten-innings allowed just one run and three hits.
- 9:04And then the Royals in 50, beating Golt here 4-2 on August 4,
- 9:10as the Royals got three runs in the first.
- 9:13So as you can see, Golt 1-2 against the Royals, but he's been much tougher than his record would indicate.
- 9:18Tom Buchanan leads off and takes the breaking ball low, ball one.
- 9:24Tom hitting 3-0-1 to almost 33 RBIs.
- 9:29He's hitting 2-94 against the Glens.
- 9:31Now ball 8-6, down to him.
- 9:36Tom Buchanan almost a single under seven, and the Royals walk in running.
- 9:41Here's Amos Otis, in the city, 2-8.
- 9:45He's been by the eyes, and a two-yard run.
- 9:58Otis, the league leader in doubles, reporting.
- 10:04The Royals will play Amos Otis to pull quite late.
- 10:09Tom Buchanan first, nobody else.
- 10:14You can hear the crowd. They are really much up for this ballgame.
- 10:19Golt stepping off the rubber, Otis steps out.
- 10:242-2, the first baseman holding Tom's pocket ball. And Tom very safely draws the throw and he's straight back.
- 10:38The Royals try to win the first major league baseball title in 21 years of big league play here in Kansas City.
- 10:46The amazing thing is, it was found in only the eighth year of existence for the Royals.
- 10:52Otis bumping a bus, takes low and inside, ball one.
- 10:58Beautiful night for me, all the temperature in the 80s.
- 11:03You wouldn't expect an 80-degree night on October the 1st.
- 11:07No wind at all, the flags are about to fall and left are left.
- 11:12That is the only left object in this ballpark. Everybody is up for this one.
- 11:17Golt again steps off, Otis again steps out.
- 11:22And Tom Buchanan resting on first, 1-0 to count on Amos Otis.
- 11:26The twins, two hits in the first, but a double play enters.
- 11:30And now Buchanan will lead off Segal.
- 11:32Pitch out, nothing happening, ball two, 2-0.
- 11:46Otis with 40 doubles has established the Royals record.
- 11:54Atrey and Mayden, he last year had 38 doubles.
- 11:58Amos broken back looper out for the second base, but he makes the catch.
- 12:02So Amos, jabs with a pitch, and breaking is fast, it's a lip hop up to Randall.
- 12:09A one out, and George Ruff coming up. Newtons in 328 with 209 lifts.
- 12:16Yes, it's going to be five on the eyes and a half a dozen home runs.
- 12:28The fans are still coming in. This place will be packed.
- 12:38Tom Buchanan first, one away, to fix the breath, making ball to blow, ball one.
- 12:48Dave Golt, not an over following pitcher, not at all.
- 12:52He'll move the ball in and out to fix the George breath, hit hard,
- 12:57off the ground with a swing shot, falling in a nice save.
- 13:01And a two-on with one out. It'll be a big hit for George Ruff, a hot play.
- 13:09Royce Wally, the shortstop going to his right, got his glove on the ball and a knock it down, the down ball.
- 13:17And Buchanan second, but it's first for Al McCray, the lead leading hitter.
- 13:29The left-handed Al's average is 333. He almost 72 on the eyes.
- 13:37He is hitting 396 against the glint. He takes a strike from Goltz on one.
- 13:43So a hit to leave it up and to a piece.
- 13:50The Royals, the same opportunity, presented the trend in the top half of the first.
- 13:55That is, that is the first and second one out.
- 13:59In that situation, Bobstock rounded it into a double play.
- 14:02Now we'll see about Al McCray.
- 14:10Goltz taking it to Petrie rubber, trying to, first of all, dislodge some mud from between his spikes.
- 14:19At first he was kicking at the dirt in front of the rubber to get it to his liking.
- 14:27Now Dave's taking a moment to rub a wrinkle in a new ball.
- 14:31So he's in no hurry. No balls and a strike, right as his first and second.
- 14:35Wally, Royals batting in the bottom of the first. No score. Here's the bet.
- 14:40McCray tried to get the bat back, but foul-fifth in the count on two.
- 14:45Goltz will be left to get on McCray's hands.
- 14:55No balls, two strikes on Al McCray.
- 15:04Back trying to become the first Royals player to win the batting title.
- 15:09Bouncing ball to third might be a double play.
- 15:11McCray, the second base down, the first base out at first and oh my goodness, his left, hit Bob Randall out at second base.
- 15:19And Randall lifting off. He almost cut him in half with a lowly body block.
- 15:24So are the Royals serious about winning tonight?
- 15:27As Bob Randall is he left back to the Minnesota dugout.
- 15:31So the bottom half of the inning in as the top half ends with a double play.
- 15:35Two hits, no runs, a man left. And after one, no score.
- 15:41A Washington newspaper, the Star, quotes an attorney who handles the pro basketball contract for being angry over the way a couple of teams announced the terms.
- 15:50The attorney, Donald Dell, represented John Lucas, who signed with the Houston Rockets, and Adrian Dantley, who went with the Buffalo Braves.
- 15:59According to Dell, Lucas actually got a seven-year contract from Houston calling for a total of one and one-half million dollars.
- 16:07Houston announced it as a multi-year contract for $850,000.
- 16:12And Dell says Buffalo announced that they'd pay us $500,000 for five years, when actually it would be $1,100,000 for seven seasons.
- 16:22Well, not too bad there. It appears though the players came out on top. After all, our pay raise was only 4.83%. We had nothing to say about it.
- 16:32Texas Rangers' out-ball, Prince Peterson, is recovering from surgery on the west at Englewood, California, hospital two days ago to repair a torn muscle in his left shoulder.
- 16:42The 34-year-old Peterson, a 20-game winner, was the Yankees in 1970, passing pitch for the Rangers on June 19.
- 16:52We go to the second inning, no score. Bush, Weininger, Larry Heissel, and Dan Ford will be coming up against the Bears.
- 16:59Weininger, the trick-treating looking catcher, carries an average of just 60 into the ballgame.
- 17:05Bush has 10 homers, 69 RBIs.
- 17:12Dugger out two singles in the first. Bostock rounded into the double play. And Weininger takes a strike on one.
- 17:24In the ballgame tomorrow afternoon, and remember it's an afternoon game, the 0-1 pitch to Weininger, breaking ball inside, one and one.
- 17:33Game time is 1.30. Dennis Weiner pitches against Jim Hughes.
- 17:38And then on Sunday afternoon, Paul Splittorf or Al Fitzmara will go against Bill Singer.
- 17:45Weininger's started to go, held up in time, ball two, two and one.
- 17:55The Royals have done very well against the twins, especially here at the Royals Stadium.
- 18:01The Royals have lost only once to the twins here. They have five victories.
- 18:07A little bit low, ball three, three and one.
- 18:13The Royals are ten and five against the twins overall.
- 18:19Three balls and one strike on the catcher, Bush Weininger.
- 18:24Back comes Doug Byrd, ground ball, right to his left, good pickup, over the footer, ten-five.
- 18:33Frank Weis going to his left to take a base hit away from Bush Weininger.
- 18:40Frank's going to tremendous range.
- 18:44That time to his left, so long away.
- 18:47And the batter, Larry Heisel, right hand hitting left fielder.
- 18:50Larry hitting 269 with 14 home runs, 93 RBI.
- 18:59Doug Byrd's pitch to Heisel, wider wave than a miss going on.
- 19:10The Royals played very well defensively Wednesday night in Oakland.
- 19:15A change or a far ball, lost it all, lost it in hot pursuit, but George just simply runs out of room
- 19:22as the ball bounces in the box seat and it takes one big hop under the screen.
- 19:31So a whole group of fans down here in Iowa let the ball bounce in the aisle and then it got away.
- 19:36It got on the screen and no chance then.
- 19:41No balls and two strikes on Heisel.
- 19:47Larry against the Royals this year, it doesn't hit.
- 19:50That includes a home run and he has nine RBI's.
- 19:54Breaking ball, one on this, down he goes.
- 19:58The dark rope went off and Heisel did not have a good swing and Larry just turns and walks back to the dugout.
- 20:05A two away is Dan Ford, Ford's average is 268.
- 20:11Dan has 20 home runs, 86 RBI.
- 20:28Right hander against right hander, the line up by Doug and the pitch, fast ball in on his hands and he fouls it away.
- 20:37The Royals should treat Daddy Ford very kindly.
- 20:43Dan Ford has been a one man wrecking crew against the Oakland A's this year.
- 20:48And in several games Dan Ford has almost single handedly beaten the A's.
- 20:55He has just worn out the Oakland pitching staff.
- 20:59So the Royals should be very grateful for the 0-1 pitch.
- 21:02High five, well hit, deep right center, Otis going back, way back to the wall, he's got it.
- 21:13Dan Ford, the man who has bedeviled the A's, he has seven home runs against the Oakland staff.
- 21:19Almost gets it out of Royals stadium, but Otis ran it down in deep right center.
- 21:24In the inning, no hits, no runs and nobody left.
- 21:28We go to the bottom of the second, Royals nothing, Queens nothing.
- 21:33While the Kansas City Royals can clinch the American League West Championship tonight in their home game against the Minnesota Twins,
- 21:40a victory by the Royals or a loss by Oakland to California was to the trick.
- 21:46Now we got a call from Freddie White with the Kansas City Royals baseball network and he informed us that
- 21:52tomorrow's game has been moved up to 2-15.
- 21:56Of course this is to accommodate television.
- 21:58That is only if the pen rate is necessary.
- 22:02However, should Oakland clinch tonight, I don't imagine that that game would be moved up at all,
- 22:08seeing as how it would be meaningless.
- 22:10However, during our college football doubleheader tomorrow, we will be passing these scores along to you.
- 22:16Of course a reminder that that big doubleheader tomorrow, UCLA at Ohio State,
- 22:23starts at 1-25 Eastern Daylight Time and then Alabama at Georgia.
- 22:28Quite a big game there in the Southeastern Conference.
- 22:31That game is started at 4-35 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time to be carried over most of these AFRGF stations.
- 22:40No score, Royals send a bad in the bottom of the second inning.
- 22:44The Clans, no runs, two singles.
- 22:46The Royals, no runs, two singles.
- 22:49John Mayberry, Al Collins and John Waffin in that order.
- 22:58Mayberry with 95 RBI that places him sixth in the American League.
- 23:05John has 13 home runs, his average is 2-35.
- 23:13Dave Gold, rocks and deals, fighter on the outside, Carter on one.
- 23:22John in years past has been doing well against the twins.
- 23:26He's hitting 250 this year, a little tap up along the first baseline,
- 23:30picked up by Rob Carew right at the back for the outs and there's one guy.
- 23:50Here's Al Collins, Al hitting 265 with 59 RBI and three home runs.
- 24:03Al has been sticking the ball for the last two and a half weeks.
- 24:08Al has changed his batting style and then he takes a strike on one.
- 24:15You might remember how Collins used to hold the bat back and parallel to the ground,
- 24:20not anymore.
- 24:21He's holding the bat straight up, his hands in front of the letters,
- 24:26he takes outside a breaking ball to the count one and one.
- 24:34Gold, we open in, half play, one hopper to the mound.
- 24:38Gold, the Corinnos and Collins is retired two outs.
- 24:42That'll bring up John Waffin.
- 24:46John's average is 289, five RBI's, he has 11 hits.
- 24:52John of course has been used sparingly as Buck Martinez and Bob Simpson
- 24:57have angled the ball to the catching.
- 25:02John handled very good up.
- 25:05Down in Oakland on Wednesday night and he's in there tonight.
- 25:08Breaking ball is hitting the right field, Dan Ford's coming in,
- 25:12he's there to make the catch and the Royals go quickly and quietly
- 25:15in the bottom of the second.
- 25:17And after two, Royals nothing, Minnesota nothing.
- 25:29Superstar Dick Allen is expected to be back in uniform tonight
- 25:32with the National League East leading Philadelphia Phillies host,
- 25:36the New York Mets and of course as we mentioned earlier in Pittsburgh,
- 25:40Danny Murtaugh has announced his retirement hence for the fourth time
- 25:44and Danny is stepping down along with Joe Brown who retired a couple of days ago.
- 25:50Let's check out the National League scorecard for you right now
- 25:53and in that New York Philadelphia game,
- 25:56Philly is leading 1-0 after three innings of play,
- 25:59Jerry Koostman going for the New York Mets and Tom Underwood for the Philadelphia Philly.
- 26:05Earlier in the day, Chicago defeated Montreal 3-1,
- 26:08Bill Fom the winner, his record now 9-13,
- 26:12and Sandhouse was the loser, his record drops to 8-13.
- 26:17St. Louis and Pittsburgh was rained out,
- 26:19Atlanta had Simpson Matty, the big red machine,
- 26:22leads the Braves 2-1 after two and one half innings of play.
- 26:26Later starts San Francisco at Houston and San Diego at Los Angeles.
- 26:34Danny Drennis jam-packed Royal City at those scores,
- 26:37the total is identical, Trent Snowrun the two-hit,
- 26:40Royals Snowrun the two-hit, Mike Cubbage, Bob Randall,
- 26:44and Steve Braun coming up.
- 26:46So here we go to the third inning, Doug Byrd set to go for more play, here's Fred.
- 26:52Okay, thank you Danny.
- 26:54Mike Cubbage, the left-handed batter, steps in, nothing, nothing.
- 27:00Great air of expectancy at Royal City in the night, a great cloud on air,
- 27:04the first pitch from Byrd to Cubbage misses away, ball one.
- 27:08Cubbage hitting.258 with three home runs, 46 RBI's,
- 27:13like Royce Bolle came over the two-to-twins in the trade with the Texas Rangers for Burt Weilofen earlier this year.
- 27:21Byrd to Cubbage, Brown ball, that's Frank White, charging at Hazard,
- 27:26Burt to Byrd and it's one away, one out, nobody on, and let's pause ten seconds for a safe notification,
- 27:32this is the Royal Baseball Network.
- 27:36This is the American Forces Radio and Television Service.
- 27:46Bob Randall steps in, a right-handed batter, the 12-second base from the number nine hitter in the batting order,
- 27:52Randall hitting.269 with a homer, 34 RBI's, 11 hits against the Royals this year.
- 27:59Splits out wide, chokes the bat, the first pitch from Byrd, ball inside, ball one.
- 28:05Danny describes it for you, boy Randall really got hit by George Brett at second base.
- 28:10George going in, throwing a block, trying to break up a double play and he blew Randall out of there,
- 28:15they both came away lifting but they're both out there still.
- 28:18A double pitch from Duck Byrd, Brown ball, high chopper, George has it, straightens up and fires their two out.
- 28:25Randall out, second to first, Duck Byrd has now retired six in a row,
- 28:31and with two out, nobody on, it's the late off hitter Steve Braun who flied to left his first time up.
- 28:36A right, the left to Braun, foul tipped, not bad a free space just for letting it start.
- 28:57Byrd one to Braun, his average two, 90, free homerun, 60 runs by the end, left hand is better. Byrd delivers.
- 29:06Breaking pitch for a strike and he's got him in the hole, two strikes to count.
- 29:10Loyal outfield straight away, Frank White deep at second, maybe very deep at first.
- 29:17And Byrd ahead in the count, reading signs from Lovett and as said here comes the bit.
- 29:22Strike three and the inning's over, he got him swinging. The second strike out for Duck Byrd in another one, two, three inning,
- 29:30he's now retired seven men in a row, no runs, no hits, no errors, none left.
- 29:35We go to the bottom of the third, the Royals coming between nothing.
- 29:39All the baseball schedule was light yesterday but there was news from the front offices.
- 29:44The Atlanta Braves announced that they've rehired manager Dave Brussel for two more years.
- 29:50That comes despite the Braves' last place record of 69 wins and 90 losses,
- 29:55which puts them 31 games behind the National League West champs, the Cincinnati Reds.
- 30:01Braves president Chad Turner says he's optimistic Brussel will do better next year.
- 30:06Brussel was named Braves manager last October.
- 30:10Cleveland Indian player manager Frank Robinson has reportedly gotten an offer to return next year.
- 30:17The Cleveland Plains dealer says Robinson has been offered $80,000 to come back as manager only.
- 30:23That's a big gut from the $200,000 Robinson reportedly makes this year.
- 30:28The Major League's first black manager reportedly will talk to deal over with his agents sometime today,
- 30:35which is Friday, and no decision yet, old Frank, as to whether he is going to accept that offer or not to return
- 30:43as manager only of the Cleveland Indians for $80,000 a year.
- 30:48The bottom of the third, it'll be Flip Patek and F. Frank White.
- 30:54The 89 hitters send back to the leadoff man Tom Pochette for the Royals.
- 30:59Patek up for the first time in the ballgame, hitting 243 with a haul run and 43 on the eyes.
- 31:05He's driven in seven against the twins.
- 31:08Well, he hasn't hit them that well. His average is only 194 against Minnesota 15, but he's had hits that have counted.
- 31:16Patek, a right-handed batter.
- 31:19Royals shortstop.
- 31:21Both are split on top. When the Royals took the field tonight, they came out through a human tunnel of Royals.
- 31:26Lancers that included Flip, Fidra, Mids, and Ewing.
- 31:29Copp and the Oil Runners.
- 31:31The Royals were fed up when they hit the field tonight. They want to end it here.
- 31:35This is from Goltz inside ball one.
- 31:39Goltz throws a running fastball, a knuckle curve, a little slider.
- 31:44Has a funny weaving motion when he delivers. The pitch to Patek is a strike and it's even a one-on-one.
- 31:52Goltz wobbles his head and his body side to side.
- 31:56Kind of a distracting motion.
- 31:58Now the crowd's starting to clab in here in the Royals stadium. A great crowd on hand.
- 32:03They want to see the Royals get going off everywhere the fifth.
- 32:07One and Miss by Patek. He's in the hole one and two.
- 32:10Goltz and Flip, because Ole Miss and the Red Sox and the fourth with nobody on his 17th, fall in on Washington's side 2-2.
- 32:19Don't forget tomorrow, game time 1-20.
- 32:22Patek fouls fifth to Fifth and it's one and two.
- 32:25The Whitey Herzog show at one o'clock tomorrow here on the Royal Network.
- 32:30And tonight we'd like to welcome once again the Armed Forces Network.
- 32:33They joined up with the Royals Network tonight.
- 32:36Some 300 stations strong listening in around the world as the Royals try to nail down the crown and the American League works here tonight.
- 32:44A win for the Royals would do it, falling back.
- 32:46The Royals should lose if the A's would lose tonight. It would be over.
- 32:49The fifth fouls fifth again by Patek and it can't remain one and two.
- 32:56But the Royals don't want to do it. By letting the Angel's BTAs on the West Coast tonight, that's a net against Blue.
- 33:05What they want is to win it right here and to take it to the clubhouse knowing that it's over.
- 33:13Patek giving Goltz the battle as we open the bottom of the third.
- 33:18One and two front up their fouling pitches off.
- 33:22Patek field straight away the pitch. Way outside breaking pitch and it's two and two.
- 33:31Blank wide in the odd deck circle.
- 33:33Circle setting Goltz for a center field.
- 33:36Bostock very shallow the pitch.
- 33:38Low and inside and a full count three and two.
- 33:42Patek of course a good man to have aboard to start a inning with that great base running ability.
- 33:47They have stolen 51 bases just one shy of Amidota's team record.
- 33:54Three and two to Patek and Goltz rubbing the baseball.
- 33:58Now looks in at Weininger for a side.
- 34:00Here comes the pitch to Patek.
- 34:03Little tap towards the mound and Goltz has it.
- 34:05Underhands to Burtz. There's one away.
- 34:08Patek trying to check your swing and rolls up.
- 34:11Burtz baseman.
- 34:13One out, nobody on to Frank White.
- 34:17Here's a royal podium.
- 34:28White steps in. Frank getting 231 with a couple of overs.
- 34:33Goltz running and delivers.
- 34:35Adds a strike.
- 34:38White hitting the plant well. He's hitting 289 against Minnesota.
- 34:42White added batter halfway up in the batter's box.
- 34:45The pitch.
- 34:46Ground ball jumper towards the shortstop.
- 34:49Ball he has it.
- 34:50Overhand to Burtz. There's two men out.
- 34:52White down short to Burtz.
- 34:55And Goltz has now retired six and a real.
- 34:57Boy these teams following identical patterns.
- 34:59They seem clit in the first with two singles.
- 35:02They seem out on a double play.
- 35:06They seem down one, two, three in the second.
- 35:09Nobody has raced yet in the third.
- 35:11Boquette has singled the stock to ball again for the royal.
- 35:15Tom at 304.
- 35:17But that is batter.
- 35:20Good off to field hitter and they're playing him straight away.
- 35:23The pitch.
- 35:24A front.
- 35:25Back to the mound but Goltz off intercept.
- 35:27Underhand to Burtz and the inning's over.
- 35:29Boquette tried to drag it past the mound and couldn't get it there.
- 35:32The way down one, three and that does it.
- 35:34No runs, no hits, no errors. Time left.
- 35:37We'll go to the forest for the royal. Nothing in the plants. Nothing.
- 35:40All the controversy is still raging over the decision by the referee and two judges that gave
- 35:45Mohamed Ali a narrow victory over Ken Narkin in their final fight Tuesday night in New York.
- 35:51Sports writers were showing film clips of the pivotal 15th round which all three officials gave to Ali.
- 35:58The film shows that Mohamed threw three times as many punches as his opponent in the final round.
- 36:04However, most of these did not land.
- 36:07So Ken Narkin's assessment of the referee and the judge's decision apparently,
- 36:12the decision rather apparently is true that Mohamed threw a lot of punches but all of them only caught air.
- 36:20Well, after a night of thunder and lightning, the second round of the $135,000 Tejara Invitational
- 36:26got underway in the rain today but the inclement weather wasn't expected to cause any delay in play.
- 36:32It's not that heavy, said PGA spokesman Tom Place. We'll keep playing unless it becomes unplayable,
- 36:39but the scores might be a little higher today.
- 36:42The golfers teed off at 11 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time. Should have more on that later on.
- 36:48We go to the fourth inning scoreless. The hits even a two apiece.
- 36:53For Minnesota it'll be Smalley, Caroo, and Bostock, the number two, three, and four hitters.
- 36:59Smalley, a quick hitter, singled his first time up, batting left-handed against Doug Byrd, his average 259.
- 37:06The outfield playing him to hit the opposite way has an extreme opposite field hitter.
- 37:11In fact, he's just one foul back up.
- 37:14Final play, one strike. We've been informed that they are selling standing room only tickets here at Coyote Stadium now.
- 37:21And out on the hill behind left field, a great army of fans lined up watching this game, sitting way up by the interstate highway.
- 37:28One strike pitch to Smalley. Breaking stuff missed, one-on-one.
- 37:35Notice the center fielder way over in left.
- 37:38So Ketbury shallow near the line in left.
- 37:41Cowan's the right fielder well off the line against the left-handed batter.
- 37:44Here's the one-one pitch from Byrd.
- 37:46Chopped towards Mayberry up the first base line.
- 37:49John Haffett, he's going to take the play himself as well away.
- 37:54Slightly out to the first base but unassisted.
- 37:58And here comes Locke Karoo, who's single-hit first time up.
- 38:02That lifted his average to 327.
- 38:09Karoo, a left-handed batter with nine on bronze, 89 on the eyes,
- 38:16now has 16 hits against the Royals this year and 49 times at the plate.
- 38:20And if Roy Karoo too is an off the field hitter, but has shortened up his turn.
- 38:24He's about a fifth piece but pretty well off the line.
- 38:28The pitch, Chopper up the first base line.
- 38:31Mayberry has it in through territory and steps it on the bag there too away.
- 38:37Karoo after Byrd's first pitch wraps out and bumps up.
- 38:41And two out, nobody on.
- 38:43Deliman Vostok, who's rattled into a double play his first time up.
- 38:47Locke Karoo, a left-handed batter and an off the field hitter.
- 38:55Vostok at 344 now.
- 39:00Byrd's fifth, here's the pitch.
- 39:03Takes the ball up high to get a pretty wild whiff of Rice's Chees Soup.
- 39:07Just then two flattened Rice's Chees Soup wrappers.
- 39:11In order for handling to blift, Fox 610 leaves some of Missouri.
- 39:19The pitch to Vostok, ground ball on his foot, hits a foul ball.
- 39:27And a count now, one ball, one strike.
- 39:29Vostok, limping around on plate, hammered himself on the foot with that one.
- 39:35A double header in New York rained out tonight, Cleveland and the Yankees.
- 39:40Baltimore leading for right-of-side with Boston, 2-2 after 4, 5th homer tied it.
- 39:45Chicago and Texas, nothing, nothing after 1.
- 39:47Detroit and Milwaukee, nothing, nothing after 2.
- 39:50California at Oakland later, Tenana against Blue.
- 39:54Here we have two out, the top of the fourth, no score.
- 39:57Vostok, wings and top foul, back behind the plate.
- 40:02Lawson to the barrier, no play, and the count remains 1-2.
- 40:07St. Louis to Pittsburgh rained out.
- 40:11Chicago beat Montreal 3-1.
- 40:13Bottom of the winner is winner, Chana Al-Salouz, who on Monday got his 32nd homer for the Cubs.
- 40:18Red leads the Braves 2-1 after 3.
- 40:21The Mets and the Phillies 1-1, the bottom of the fourth.
- 40:25Zafran, Tsutsuko and Houston score us after 1.
- 40:28And San Diego and Los Angeles later.
- 40:31First ball, two strikes to the pitch from Bird to Vostok, inside, with the...
- 40:37and a count even 2-2, Vostok.
- 40:41Had to flatten out to get out of the way of that one.
- 40:48Denny Sojan, the first Vostok crew of the twins, McCray and Brennan the Royals,
- 40:54employed in a Red Rock batting race for the American Break Championship.
- 40:59Nobody's really worried about that on the Royals ball club.
- 41:022-2, ground ball, that project, Red has it.
- 41:05A throwing, and the inning's over.
- 41:08Vostok out, took the first.
- 41:10Another 1-2 is waiting for Doug Byrne, he's retired, it's Kenan O'Rourke.
- 41:14No runs, no hits, no errors, none left.
- 41:16We go to the bottom of the fourth, the Royals nothing to plan for.
- 41:20You think.
- 41:22Angelo Dundee is in shock by Muhammad Ali's retirement announcement,
- 41:26but says when he hears it from Ali, he'll believe it.
- 41:30Dundee asks, with all the things I've been through with Ali, how could I be shocked at anything?
- 41:36Dundee feels that if Ali cannot give 100% of himself, he will retire.
- 41:41As for the... he thought it was unusual that Ali would select a sad bull to make his announcement,
- 41:47and unusual for him to make it without informing his trainer first, Dundee says.
- 41:53Is there anything unusual about Ali? He's just something else.
- 41:58Atlanta Braves manager Dave Brustle has a new two-year contract.
- 42:03Owner Ted Turner feels that Brustle will turn it around for the losing Braves.
- 42:08Turner is very unhappy about the losing season, but is very optimistic about the future.
- 42:14The Braves finish the season this weekend at Cincinnati.
- 42:17They are in last place in the National League West.
- 42:2031 games behind the champion, Cincinnati Reds.
- 42:27It's the bottom of the fourth in the Royal Stadium of Scorla's ballgame,
- 42:30and the Royals will send Otis Redditt-McCray as Dave Gold.
- 42:34The number two, three, and four hitters.
- 42:37We only have a moment. We want to say hello to Jim Keever, who's quite a Royal fan from Ashota, Kansas.
- 42:44He's ill and in research hospital.
- 42:48Here we hope you recover in a ring.
- 42:50Also, happy anniversary to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Fort-Senior from Archie Madura.
- 42:55Their 60th anniversary today.
- 42:57Happy birthday to Scott Mott, or Hot-Rudder, Scott Mott is the Royal's favorite.
- 43:02Here we go to the fourth, Amos Otis steps in.
- 43:07Otis broke his bat in a little looping liner to the second baseman Bobby Randall his first time up.
- 43:14Mayo hitting 280 with 18 overs, 86 runs batted in.
- 43:21Amos Whitehead is out of waiting and Gold delivers all into the dirt ball one.
- 43:30Boy, what a night in Royal Stadium.
- 43:33It would be a great night for the Royals to put it away.
- 43:38It's warm, about 85 degrees, no wind blowing.
- 43:42The hitters will get no help.
- 43:44Bishes ball two to Amos Otis, 2-0 now.
- 43:50Royal's third base coach, Scott Giller, is celebrating his 42nd birthday tonight.
- 43:55I know how he'd like to celebrate it by waving some Royals on by.
- 44:03What a Royal coaching staff has been so important this year.
- 44:062-0 Bits Otis, warm and foul Tim.
- 44:09That one got Bush Weininger, the twin catcher on the left foot.
- 44:12Two balls and a strike.
- 44:14The Royal coaches, Scott Giller, Steve Foros, Galen Siscoe, Charlie Vowell.
- 44:21From the moment they went to spring training and Bortmeier Florida this spring have worked and worked and worked and worked and worked.
- 44:35This ball's rough. When are you going to win this game here tonight?
- 44:39But Colts has been tough.
- 44:41Then he told you, he's been tough all year.
- 44:45Otis finally going to start a scoreless ball game in the bottom of the fourth.
- 44:49Colts, the right hander, is set here for 2-1 Bits.
- 44:53Strike beat on the outside corner and it's even a 2-2.
- 44:58George Burtneck.
- 45:01Here comes the 2-2 Bits.
- 45:04Inside it hit him.
- 45:06Otis Vicks on the left leg.
- 45:08He's a board with nobody else.
- 45:13We lose these scores.
- 45:15One of our favorites, Henry Waite, is in the hot middle.
- 45:21Henry is the sports director for NBC, ABC, CBS, Newsreel Radio, the Armed Forces Network, and all Europeans.
- 45:31Henry, quite a man around the world, didn't he? He always helped the NBC crew out and then he asked if he was going to help NBC and he said he'd like it, nonetheless.
- 45:41Why do a better Henry? Henry, you get ballin' to her.
- 45:44So to Burt, not his side, Otis back.
- 45:47Brett the hinner is average at 849.
- 45:51Otis, a tremendous baseletter, as you know. He's stolen 26 bases this year, been caught only seven times.
- 46:01Vicks by the gold fifth.
- 46:05The fifth time Avis has been hit this year by a Vick.
- 46:08He has a safely to throw to Burt, not in time, he's back.
- 46:12The twin playbletters, an opposite field hitter, they give him a big gap in right center.
- 46:16If George saw a Vick to fall, he could score Otis.
- 46:21Now, Gold's making contact with Otis at a huge lead. He had a foot out on the carpet.
- 46:26That's way less than anybody else's foreign neighbor.
- 46:32Otis again a big lead. Giroux holding him, throw that way, not in time, he's back again.
- 46:40Say, Gold has yet to bick to George Brett. George Singled his first time up.
- 46:47And he now has 210 hits this year.
- 46:51Hitting over 400 against the planet.
- 46:55Breaking contact with Gold, and again Otis back. Gold does not like the big lead that Otis has.
- 47:05Thomas Mann and the American Vegas Bull with a big gap.
- 47:08Otis leads them very, very well.
- 47:12Gold goes in with weight to fix that time, and he's 1-0 on Brett.
- 47:19And now you might begin to keep an eye on Otis.
- 47:23Brett's wave is about around waiting.
- 47:26Gold's still looking at Amos Otis as Gold attempts to complete it.
- 47:30He is really bothering Gold. There's a foot of Burt. He got him, he picked him off.
- 47:37Amos Otis sent off, and there's one out, nobody on.
- 47:42Gold's before coming through, but Otis getting played into field and fired, and he got him, it was close.
- 47:48So the leadoff runner has been wiped out.
- 47:52And the Royals will have to start over. Gold is running the 1-0 bitch to Brett.
- 47:57Breaking fix for a strike, and it's 1-1.
- 48:03So the Royals have lost their base runner. Here's the bitch, Brett.
- 48:07Right to double, left field, right fair model runner.
- 48:10Goes around first to set him in second.
- 48:13He goes right into second base standing up with a double.
- 48:21His 32nd double of the year.
- 48:24And the Royals have a man enjoying position with one out on the fourth, and now betrayed to the plate.
- 48:30And Gold's pickoff of Otis now is very big.
- 48:34It doesn't seem to be an easy foul that way.
- 48:37In all likelihood, Amos would have been running on that pick and may have scored.
- 48:41That's the very worst, the Royals would have run into second and third with nobody out.
- 48:48But there's a runner in second with one out, and here's how McCray hits the ball hard to ground it into a double play his first time up.
- 48:56Dressed by Gold for fifth, McCray takes it for a strike.
- 49:03Back of good opposite field hitter, and Boxock giving him room in right center and in left center, playing him straight away.
- 49:10But George's out slowly over in the hole.
- 49:14Going base for Mike Covey.
- 49:18Nearly deep and off the line.
- 49:22Oh, about five, six steps.
- 49:26They open the right side up for McCray.
- 49:28On the end field, ran all over into the bag now going back.
- 49:31What's the move behind Brett McCray?
- 49:33It's a ground ball backhanded by Covey just third.
- 49:36Ball throw, out at first.
- 49:38And the third base goes left.
- 49:41Brett Caru now talking to the first base up line.
- 49:55Give it straight out, third to first.
- 49:58Here's Mayberry over one in the ballgame.
- 50:01He grounded the first base, but Brett now is third with two out.
- 50:07Dave Gold sets to direct the fifth.
- 50:11Ball one to Mayberry.
- 50:16I think what's Caru's unhappy with how McCray, but Caru has got a habit of getting back on the bag.
- 50:22The fifth.
- 50:23Mayberry takes ball two.
- 50:25Al Cowan would be next.
- 50:34If you've been around and made the legs as long as Rod Caru has, you have to know that you can't take half the bag.
- 50:43Al McCray has reminded him of that twice this year.
- 50:54The twin now fighting the shift against Mayberry.
- 50:57The shortstop ball is over behind the bag and second.
- 51:00Bob Randall, the second base bat in right field.
- 51:03Al Cowan over the count, Gold keeping the ball away from him, the fifth.
- 51:08Ball three, making six inside.
- 51:16We're in the fourth in storm.
- 51:18Mayberry trying to drive one home right here.
- 51:22John, ten wheels from that waiting.
- 51:25Very deep in the batter's box.
- 51:26We'll see if they turn him loose on three or if he's taking.
- 51:30Here's the fifth.
- 51:31He's swinging and he misses the breaking six, the gap now three and one.
- 51:44Gold flying at the rubber.
- 51:47Mayberry again, ten wheels to bat.
- 51:51Here for threat.
- 51:52The fifth.
- 51:54There's a fly ball right field over near the running track at stand four and he's got it and the inning's over.
- 52:00Mayberry flies to right and the Royals come away empty handed.
- 52:06No runs ahead.
- 52:08It's better a man picked off no errors and one left.
- 52:11And we'll go to the fifth.
- 52:13The Royals nothing and it winds up.
- 52:15Zafriano Balotero, the Spain shot a six under far in 67 to take the lead on the first day of the three-day Donald Swalings golf cinema.
- 52:25Balotero's score equaled the course record set in 1967 by former Belgian champion Donald Swalings for whom the tournament is named.
- 52:35The Spaniard was two strokes ahead of Lee Alder of the United States who shot a four under far in 69.
- 52:41American Curtis Strange scored a two under far in 67.
- 52:45Brian Huckett of Wales posted a far in 73 while John Garnardy of France scored a 74 and Tommy Aaron of the United States a 75.
- 52:57Brain interrupted Bley with Gary Flair of South Africa and Trula Poussaint of Belgium, the only two other Flairs in the tournament, two holes out.
- 53:07They will complete the first round on Saturday morning.
- 53:11Carl Jastrzybski became the ninth oldest Flair to drive in 100 runs in the Pringles season Friday when he drove home Rick Miller with an NPO single.
- 53:22We move to the fifth in the Royal Stadium of Stortford ballgame.
- 53:26The Royals have about hit the twin Swedish single but neither team has punched home a run yet.
- 53:31The Royal Stadium of Stortford is one of the fifths whining at a height of a four by number five, six and seven hitters.
- 53:37Back to the mound, Doug Byrd once again. Here's Dunnick. Hi Fred.
- 53:41Butch Weidiger retired on a fine play by Frank White his first time up.
- 53:45Doug Byrd now has retired 10 straight.
- 53:49The delivery to the twitch hitting Weidiger is over the globe all right.
- 53:54Jim McKeen the plate on fire.
- 54:01One ball no strikes, still Weidiger.
- 54:04Back comes Byrd in a line drive foul down the right field line.
- 54:09It bangs off the wall and they two out Collins in the count of one and one.
- 54:17The Minnesota Hits singles five slowly and right through in the first inning.
- 54:24The Royals have two singles in the double.
- 54:29Inside corner to Weidiger one and two.
- 54:37One ball two strikes.
- 54:42The fifth to the Minnesota catcher is down and in. Two balls two strikes.
- 54:54Ballgamer is top of the fifth.
- 54:57This is game one of the series.
- 55:01Doug Reddy the two to pitch to Weidiger.
- 55:04Breaking ball barely missed the inside corner to Nees. Full count three and two.
- 55:13The Giants leading Houston two to nothing down in Houston.
- 55:18Uxbridge the season tomorrow. They don't play Sunday.
- 55:23Offsets fouls down George Brett with room as the ball goes away.
- 55:31So Weidiger fouls out and up comes Larry Heidl who struck out in the second inning.
- 55:37Doug hasn't walked anybody that's not news. He has two strikeouts.
- 55:52The Royals play Larry Heidl slightly to full.
- 55:56Doug works to the right hand batter.
- 55:58Weidiger fouls back to the three oh and one.
- 56:08A scoreless ball game top of the fifth.
- 56:12The Royals trying to win it.
- 56:15The oh one pitch. The ball ball or the change fouls back in the count of two.
- 56:34The ball six strikes on Larry Heidl.
- 56:39Doug Burr that drinks it all.
- 56:41And a swing and a miss down he goes.
- 56:44That was the identical pitch with the identical box that Iso struck out on in the second.
- 56:51So Doug has his third strikeout of the ball game. He's retired 12th straight.
- 56:56And the batter Jan Ford.
- 56:59Ford's wide out to Amos Oden. He's been hitting deep right center field his first strike.
- 57:12And a dig there. Nothing nothing top of the fifth inning.
- 57:16The fight a duo shaping up between Doug Burr and Dave Gould.
- 57:22That ball hit on his hands and he told his foul oh and one.
- 57:30We mentioned earlier the ball game that Gould pitched against the Royals in Minnesota.
- 57:35The Royals eventually winning one to nothing in 10 innings back on June the 29th.
- 57:41It took Ford fine plays in the outfield by Hal McCray.
- 57:46And then a sacrifice fly by Fred Potec to score McCray with the only run of the ball game.
- 57:52The oh one pitch.
- 57:53Low and outside. One ball and one strike.
- 58:03So Gould has lost twice to the Royals this year and Hal Fitzwarrents beat him both times.
- 58:09It's a bird trying to get a duck.
- 58:11Up foul near the Royals dugout.
- 58:13Waffett chasing it but it's on a play back two rows directly behind the Royals dugout.
- 58:18All clear for station identification.
- 58:21This is the Royals baseball midlaner.
- 58:24This is the American Forces radio and television service.
- 58:38The
- 58:41top of the fifth.
- 58:42Base is empty two outs.
- 58:44One and two the count to Dan Ford.
- 58:49Juggs bird pitted to the right hand batter.
- 58:51Hits a left center field and deep.
- 58:53Back to Sam Fokette over his head and one out to the wall.
- 58:57Fokette plays the tenor and by that time Dan Ford is second with the two out double.
- 59:02So Dan Ford.
- 59:05The man who we mentioned just killing down a one man crusade against the Oakland A's.
- 59:10Is that worth against the Royals?
- 59:12And he doubles with two outs.
- 59:14And up comes Mike Cubbage who rolled out to the second baseman his first time up.
- 59:24For Dan Ford that would be his 24th to base hit.
- 59:34The Reds have retired a dozen.
- 59:39He had not a lot of runners since the double play in the first.
- 59:42But now Dan Ford hits one in the alley between Fokette and Otis.
- 59:47At Mike Cubbage a chance to put the twins out in front.
- 59:51To hit even up a three to base.
- 59:55The fifth to the left hand batter.
- 59:57Coming inside ball one.
- 1:00:03And all those strikes on Mike Cubbage.
- 1:00:06Mike a former Ranger.
- 1:00:08Came to the twins in the first line of the trade.
- 1:00:13Doug a backward lance of second.
- 1:00:16He stepped off the rubber.
- 1:00:18Dan Ford did not have that big a lead.
- 1:00:21Nonetheless Doug chose to step back and start over.
- 1:00:30One and all on Cubbage.
- 1:00:33Good making ball.
- 1:00:35The strike is one and one.
- 1:00:37Gil Sundberg.
- 1:00:39The Texas Rangers by Decker and Fomar in third.
- 1:00:43And Texas has taken a two to one lead over Chicago.
- 1:00:46Tony Perez as Fomar's first symptomatic.
- 1:00:49The Reds lead Atlanta three to one.
- 1:00:51For Tony Perez his 19th.
- 1:00:56One ball one strike on Mike Cubbage.
- 1:00:58Dan Ford at second two out on the top of the fifth.
- 1:01:01A scoreless ball game.
- 1:01:03Doug tried to hit the inside corner and missed.
- 1:01:06Two balls and a strike.
- 1:01:14Each team had a scoring opportunity in the first inning.
- 1:01:20The Cray rolled into a double play.
- 1:01:23Simon Botstock rounded into a twin jelly.
- 1:01:30Two balls and a strike.
- 1:01:32Here's the stretch by Doug in the fifth.
- 1:01:34Ground ball up the middle but Motek is behind second.
- 1:01:37He's got it over the middle area.
- 1:01:39It's time.
- 1:01:40Daniel Spivey desires.
- 1:01:41Motek was positioned perfectly by Cubbage in his last round towards center field.
- 1:01:47That Motek was in front of it.
- 1:01:49And that's that.
- 1:01:51The two are doubled by Dan Ford.
- 1:01:53One hit, no runs and a man left.
- 1:01:55We go to the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:01:57No score.
- 1:01:59Carl Yastrumsky became the ninth oldest player to drive in 100 runs in a single season Friday.
- 1:02:06When he drove home Rick Miller with an infield single.
- 1:02:09Yastrumsky hit a ground ball to Baltimore first baseman Lee May with two outs in the first inning.
- 1:02:15Baltimore pitcher Dave Pagan missed the first base and taking the throw for May allowing Yastrumsky to reach safely.
- 1:02:24Miller raced home from second base on the play.
- 1:02:27Now Dave Brooks twice drove in more than 100 runs in a single season after he turned 37 years of age.
- 1:02:33Others to perform at that feat included Ty Cobb, Ernie Banks, Honor Wagner, Mini Minotto, Hank Aaron, Zach Wheat and Bob Johnson.
- 1:02:44Harusaho raced on Friday and saw the New York Yankees and Cincinnati Reds as favorites for the Major League Playoffs beginning October 9th.
- 1:02:53The Reds were made two or three favorites which means they better would put up $3 to win two.
- 1:02:58Conversely the Phillies were listed as 13 to 10 meaning a better would put up $10 to win 13.
- 1:03:05The Yankees meanwhile were listed at 5 to 8 and the Kansas City Royals at 7 to 5.
- 1:03:10Kansas City is the only team which hasn't clinched a divisional title but its magic number is down to one.
- 1:03:18And at the rate they're going tonight perhaps it will be tomorrow sometimes before it's decided as to whether the Kansas City Royals have indeed won the Western Division of the American League.
- 1:03:30It's not over yet. They're three and a half games ahead of the Oakland A's with three games remaining.
- 1:03:36But the Oakland A's have four games to play.
- 1:03:39Now let's get back to the Royal Stadium.
- 1:03:42By number 5, no score. Al Cowan, John Lawson and Fred Pontec coming up.
- 1:03:50Al Cowan goes back to the pitcher his first time up.
- 1:03:55No runs, three hits to Thread. No runs, three hits for the Royals.
- 1:04:00Needless team is ahead. Golds delivered, breaking ball rolling outside ball one.
- 1:04:08You can imagine the Royals are so eager to get a run.
- 1:04:12Top foul back and out of play by Al Cowan.
- 1:04:15And they got one and one.
- 1:04:21Golds working very methodically.
- 1:04:27Davis 14 and 14 with the league and ERA at 3.34.
- 1:04:36The 1-1 pitch to Al is down and in, ball two. Good one.
- 1:04:40Reggie Jackson has just opened for Baltimore and the seventh inning with nobody out is 27.
- 1:04:46And Baltimore leading Boston 4-2.
- 1:04:49Cowan's this one over the jump stop and the left turn is a big hit.
- 1:04:53Now the last one is put down to break.
- 1:04:57Cowan's whooping one under the jump stop, right falling.
- 1:05:01And the Royals back to the redock man for it for the first time in five innings.
- 1:05:08Up comes John Waffentheke.
- 1:05:11John a fly ball in the right field his first time up.
- 1:05:23John maybe asks a bunch.
- 1:05:30Al Cowan off the bag and Al has a pretty good lead.
- 1:05:34Waffentheke's going away and he lines his foul outside first and on down the right field line, 0-1-1.
- 1:05:44John checking with Thursday's coach Chuck Hiller who by the way is celebrating a birthday tonight.
- 1:05:52John a long-looking shot.
- 1:05:56All the while Al Cowan's on his first base watching the Royals Thursday's coach do.
- 1:06:02The Royals now could go to the butt.
- 1:06:04No balls and a strike.
- 1:06:05First goal goes over the first to runner back.
- 1:06:21No score bottom of the fifth.
- 1:06:22One-on-none out.
- 1:06:24Waffentheke was not going to body.
- 1:06:26He was going to fling away and the pitch came in low in the count one-on-one.
- 1:06:39Chuck Hiller going through the spine once again.
- 1:06:42Waffentheke back in the batter's box.
- 1:06:44Cowan's establishing a lead.
- 1:06:47Goal plants the right foot.
- 1:06:50Chuck's been with his catcher's with Twyneager.
- 1:06:52And now steps back off the rubber.
- 1:06:55One ball and one strike on John Waffentheke.
- 1:06:59Al Cowan's open the inning with a single into left center.
- 1:07:03Al draws the throw just as he was leaving the bag to establish his lead.
- 1:07:09So no trouble getting back.
- 1:07:15The Royals with just singles and a double off Dave Gold.
- 1:07:18Good throw to first.
- 1:07:22Cowan's diving back into the bag.
- 1:07:24The singles by Tom Fosette and George Brett.
- 1:07:27Brett single off the glove of the first-top Roy's Wally.
- 1:07:32And the extra base hit was Brett's double in the fourth.
- 1:07:36Otis had started the inning being hit by a gold pitch, but the Namers were sent off.
- 1:07:42So Brett's double came with one out, nobody a-hawing.
- 1:07:45Waffentheke hit the down ball past the victim.
- 1:07:48Second base was raised to tag and over to first.
- 1:07:50Second base was first.
- 1:07:53But Al Cowan was fouled by Roy's Wally who made quite a play.
- 1:08:00Wally charging that down ball was past second base.
- 1:08:05So he lost any chance he had at the fourth and second base.
- 1:08:10As he moved towards the end and sent himself to the goal, he made a quick swipe at Al Cowan.
- 1:08:15And he nicked Al in the church for the out.
- 1:08:20Waffentheke first won away in the batter of Brett Poptec.
- 1:08:24Brett number one, thrown out to the pitcher Dave Gold for the first time up.
- 1:08:28So Wally making a very good play in front of second base.
- 1:08:33He was able to tag Al Cowan, but he couldn't get Waffentheke.
- 1:08:36John runs very well.
- 1:08:38Poptec is swinging a miss, throwing one.
- 1:08:41No balls for the strike on Brett Poptec.
- 1:08:55No reading signs, back he comes and Brett he swings to the breaking ball and misses.
- 1:09:00And the count goes to two.
- 1:09:06Nothing, nothing.
- 1:09:08The Royals down in with four hits.
- 1:09:12The clean is at three.
- 1:09:18Frank White in the on deck circle.
- 1:09:21The stretch of the pitch.
- 1:09:22Bouncing ball takes him up here.
- 1:09:32Brett Poptec now with a single in the left.
- 1:09:35Mike Tumich to third base, but made a headlong dive and came up empty.
- 1:09:46Two on one out and here's Frank White.
- 1:09:49Frank getting in the ninth spot tonight.
- 1:09:52He rolled to the cut top his first time up.
- 1:10:01The Royals trying to break this scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:10:06Waffentheke second, Poptec at first to hit the light.
- 1:10:10Over but low, ball one.
- 1:10:16Five hits off Dave Gault.
- 1:10:23Dave hasn't locked anybody.
- 1:10:26We mentioned earlier he is not an overpowering pitcher.
- 1:10:30And he hasn't stuck out anybody.
- 1:10:32The one on fifth down into the second base and they'll go for a double play.
- 1:10:36It's Wally at second off to third base.
- 1:10:40Waffentheke has to stay at third.
- 1:10:41Out comes A.Walk.
- 1:10:45The Minnesota manager.
- 1:10:49He is pointing for first base.
- 1:10:53Rod Carrillo coming off the back.
- 1:10:57And Rod was on the right field side of first base.
- 1:11:01And tried to swipe at Frank White who was already across the base safely.
- 1:11:06So they get the fourth shot at second.
- 1:11:08There are two guns.
- 1:11:09And here's Tom Pochette with Waffentheke third and Frank White at first.
- 1:11:15So two on two off, no score.
- 1:11:17Royals batting in the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:11:19And Tom Pochette has a chance to put the Royals in front.
- 1:11:31Not a single in the first inning.
- 1:11:33And they try to butt his way out in the third.
- 1:11:35Dave Gault came off the mound to pick off the butt.
- 1:11:39Tom was trying to drag it out toward the second baseman Randall who is playing deep as he is now.
- 1:11:47But Tom didn't run it hard enough to get it past Gault.
- 1:11:50Dave threw him out.
- 1:11:54Bobby is 33 on the eyes.
- 1:11:56He takes down low, ball one.
- 1:12:05This standing room only crowd is Loyal City and just poised to explode.
- 1:12:13You can see electricity getting involved by 45 minutes before the first pitch was thrown.
- 1:12:19And certainly now the 1-0 pitch.
- 1:12:23And here's the message. The ball gets away from Lionel Waffenthorne.
- 1:12:51And they're helping the Royals. Well it wasn't very pretty.
- 1:12:55But boy they'll take it.
- 1:12:59Gault throwing that wrenchy ball down into the dirt.
- 1:13:02Tom Pochette swinging and missing.
- 1:13:05It is going a wild pitch.
- 1:13:08And as the ball got away from Lionel Gault, Waffenthorne is concerned by a crisis of 90 feet.
- 1:13:14He's now at second.
- 1:13:16And the count on Tom Pochette, one and one.
- 1:13:19And here's the miss.
- 1:13:21Waffenthorne breaking the ball down and in, ball two. Good luck.
- 1:13:30We need to stop and consider the day of Gault.
- 1:13:33And we've said it, he's not overpowering.
- 1:13:36He's a control pitcher.
- 1:13:38He doesn't walk many, he doesn't strike out many.
- 1:13:41But he's going to score his first keen wild pitch.
- 1:13:44And he'll pop back up again. Round five. Knock the ball.
- 1:13:49Drop the ball right in front.
- 1:13:51Gault will take the drive for third.
- 1:13:53And Tom Pochette.
- 1:14:20It's good enough we can say with the Royals, Wyman Crockstock to center field it.
- 1:14:35With tremendous speed and he tried to run that ball down in left center.
- 1:14:40And he made a headlong dive. He had the ball in his glove.
- 1:14:45But boy he hit the deck and boy that artificial turf is hard.
- 1:14:49The ball came floating loose like a wet bar of soap.
- 1:14:54And very quite good.
- 1:14:56Tom Pochette made it all the way to third base with a couple.
- 1:15:00And Crockstock is first.
- 1:15:04He was high as thing and then moving back toward his position in center.
- 1:15:09And then suddenly doubled over and is in pain now attended to by the Minnesota Trainers.
- 1:15:15The third team lost a manager walking out very slowly.
- 1:15:20So the Royals have taken it to the nothing late.
- 1:15:23It started with a swingle by Collins.
- 1:15:26Lawson bounced into a fourth shot.
- 1:15:29The base hit by Fred Hotchett.
- 1:15:32Frank White bouncing into a fourth shot.
- 1:15:34Lawson going to third.
- 1:15:36And John to score on the wild pitch.
- 1:15:38And now the double by Tom Pochette off the glove of the diving lion and Crockstock in left center field.
- 1:15:45And suddenly it's 2-0 Royals.
- 1:15:48Yeah I think there's something very repeating. We haven't talked about it for a long time.
- 1:15:53All the talk about rookies of the year.
- 1:15:55Tom Pochette has had a lot of consideration.
- 1:15:57Maybe because he's played five-0 I guess right handed pitching.
- 1:16:00When you think of a great defensive play as he's turned in.
- 1:16:04He made 50s out of that. He's hitting over 300.
- 1:16:07It's just a darn shame if he gets overlooked.
- 1:16:11Now in right field, Gallimaga. I hope it's not claimant.
- 1:16:14There is a fan telling the shot we're number one.
- 1:16:18Well it's only in the fifth so we're looking on it.
- 1:16:23Well we're tied to number one. That counts for something.
- 1:16:26That's right.
- 1:16:29Meanwhile in center field they are still gathered around Lyman Bobstock.
- 1:16:36Dave Goltz the pitcher continues to stay loose.
- 1:16:44It would appear that there is a killing war if that would be the correct terminology
- 1:16:51between the general admission section in left and the general admission bands in right field.
- 1:17:04Several signs are popping up here at the Royals stadium.
- 1:17:08There's a sizable sign held up by fans down the right field line.
- 1:17:15And the sign there simply says number one, Royals Western Division champs.
- 1:17:24It says it all. The Royals are not quite ready to assume that label.
- 1:17:31But as we said they certainly have one foot very solidly in the door.
- 1:17:37And all they have to do now is to maintain their lead which is 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:17:43And they can slam that door behind them and look then to the Yankees.
- 1:17:48They will be here at Royals stadium to play the first game of the playoff one week from tomorrow at noon.
- 1:17:55Saturday October the 9th and then a Sunday night game on October the 10th.
- 1:18:04That brings up a point tomorrow afternoon the Royals and the Twins play.
- 1:18:09That game was originally slated to be played at 7.30 tomorrow night.
- 1:18:15But it's an afternoon game it will start at 1.30 or more correctly 1.20 because of Nashville television.
- 1:18:24And the pitchers will be Dennis Leonard and Jim Hughes.
- 1:18:28And then Sunday afternoon Paul Swinorth or Alphys Morris against Bill Singer.
- 1:18:34And I think I see Bill Singer loosing in the Twins bullpen now.
- 1:18:38So Bill getting ready to pitch here on Sunday doing his throwing in the bullpen.
- 1:18:49Lyman Boscak after getting much attention is okay.
- 1:18:56He will stay in the ball game.
- 1:18:59Dave Colts continues to throw.
- 1:19:15That was good to go. Amos Otis with the play.
- 1:19:19Bob McKenna turns two out way to the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:19:23The Royals just score in two runs.
- 1:19:32The right hander throwing now in the Twins bullpen is Bob Johnson.
- 1:19:37Otis dropping a fast takes a pitch outside ball one.
- 1:19:43They have talked to the second base for the first time up.
- 1:19:46In the fourth inning he was hit by a pitch ball.
- 1:19:51The Royals have scored two here in the fifth.
- 1:19:54Tom Pocet doubles getting Frank Whitehall.
- 1:19:57The one old pitch to Amazonas hits a left center field and deep.
- 1:20:00That's what Boscak still going back to make the catch near the warning track.
- 1:20:05And that retires the drive.
- 1:20:08The Royals come up with two runs on three hits.
- 1:20:12They lead one and after five the Royals two and the Twins nothing.
- 1:20:17Brookie George Burns who led in the final rounds of the World and Houston Open this year.
- 1:20:23George the new second round lead of the $135,000 Sahara Invitational Golf Tournament.
- 1:20:30They rained six under bar 65 or a 36 hole total of 132.
- 1:20:36Playing all day when a rare October desert rain showers followed a spectacular night of lightning and thunder.
- 1:20:43Six foot two, 210 pound Burns of Delray Beach Florida took a one shot advantage over second year pro Bruce Lipsky and George Archer.
- 1:20:52A 1969 Masters champion.
- 1:20:55Lipsky had a 67 while Archer seeking his first victory in four years.
- 1:21:00Not the 66 for a 133 score.
- 1:21:04Two shots back at 134 were 46 year old Don January.
- 1:21:0914 year tour veteran Charles Cootie and Mike McCullough defending champion Dave Hill match Burns to 65.
- 1:21:17And with three shots back at 135 and a tie with Miller Farber who had a second round 67.
- 1:21:24This is the first time I remember it raining here during the Sahara.
- 1:21:28And a bet of 16 of them said tournament director John Romero. It got some rain but not that much said Burns who shot an opening round 67.
- 1:21:37It was not enough to affect my game like this morning.
- 1:21:40Burns who took a one shot lead over Masters champion Ray Floyd into the final round of the World Open at Pinehurst, North Carolina three weeks ago.
- 1:21:48And was in front by three strokes with nine holes to go.
- 1:21:51Caught at 7.30 in his round of 32-33 over the bar 71 court.
- 1:21:57We move to the fix. The Royals lead two to nothing.
- 1:22:01A fan has jumped out of the stands to drape a banner on the warning track in center field.
- 1:22:09And now he's being led away.
- 1:22:13Well, it's exuberant.
- 1:22:18That excitement has overcome him.
- 1:22:21Of course that's against the rules.
- 1:22:25And the sad part about it is that he won't be around to celebrate.
- 1:22:33He managed to take the hand of Amos Odinson center field but it's too bad he won't be around in the 19th England.
- 1:22:42Hopefully the Royals can attach that sign to their dressing room, number one.
- 1:22:47Bobby Randall takes the pitch from the inside corner on one.
- 1:22:51So here we go on the six. The Royals two runs on a half a dozen hits.
- 1:22:55The twins no runs three hits.
- 1:22:58That's Bird ready and deal.
- 1:23:00On the net by Bob Randall, the count on two.
- 1:23:03Bob thrown out by Fred in the third inning.
- 1:23:06He's the number nine hitter.
- 1:23:08Steve Braun and Royce smally to follow.
- 1:23:10Top of the six.
- 1:23:13Dodgers struck out three. Back he comes.
- 1:23:16Fastball, foot on a net, down goes Randall.
- 1:23:20He's got a run away.
- 1:23:27That'll bring up the twins, VH.
- 1:23:30Steve Braun, he struck out in the third.
- 1:23:33By the left field in the first inning.
- 1:23:39He's the tenth and one out.
- 1:23:45Doug started to go into his motion then stopped. Now he's ready.
- 1:23:51Footed by Braun, popped up and Doug Byrne hits the depth behind him out.
- 1:23:58Now he drops the ball and it's played by George Fett.
- 1:24:03Braun trying to drag the ball past the mound and pops it up behind him out.
- 1:24:08And Doug Byrne is spreading back in the pitchers now to haul it in.
- 1:24:12The quickly two out and here's Royce Smally the slip hitting truck stop.
- 1:24:17Royce single in the first, grounded to the first, they've been in the fourth.
- 1:24:21Smally one out of two.
- 1:24:23The line by Doug in the fifth.
- 1:24:25What are they doing going on?
- 1:24:35The magic number is one.
- 1:24:38They win tonight for the Royals and there will be no magic number.
- 1:24:43Roy into right field, face hit.
- 1:24:45Al Fowler's over quickly to cut it off and Braun held it with single.
- 1:24:50Another Smally, Roy belting the ball into right field.
- 1:24:54The Smally two out of three.
- 1:24:59The batter Rod Carew.
- 1:25:00The Rod single in the first, grounded out in the fourth.
- 1:25:09The Royce Smally has half of the twins hit.
- 1:25:14The roof starting for the play now goes back toward the dugout.
- 1:25:19The assembly would like to do back.
- 1:25:28The Royce Smally at first, two out and here comes Rod Carew.
- 1:25:34Rod hepting a new piece of rubber now with a fly the line direct to that bat.
- 1:25:56Rod Carew one out of two, single in the first.
- 1:26:01He bounced out to Mayberry in the fourth.
- 1:26:04The threat by Doug Byrne in the fifth.
- 1:26:07A half fling and he kicked the foul on the count of one-one.
- 1:26:19No balls and one strike on Rod Carew.
- 1:26:25Doug takes the time, goes to work and throws a fastball in too tight.
- 1:26:34Steven Glory and Mark Lattell working in the Royals full fence.
- 1:26:41One ball, one strike on Rod Carew.
- 1:26:44Bouncing ball passed the mound, thanks to his right of gun it puts the ball back for the fourth time and that retires the tie.
- 1:26:51No runs, one hit. A man west, the Clips now in strand to three.
- 1:26:56The Royals come to bat in the bottom of the sixth.
- 1:26:59Royals two, twins nothing.
- 1:27:02One of the PCA touring pro Charlie Seifert shot a hole in one Friday,
- 1:27:07en route to a victory in the Menino-Spanish Centennial Open Tournament for pros at the Northern Ohio area.
- 1:27:15Seifert carded a three on the far 69 over 18 holes at the Wedgewood Country Club.
- 1:27:21His eighth, the sixth in his career, came on the 192 yard 4-3 17th hole.
- 1:27:27Seifert, one of the first black golfing pros, is a sixth iron and the ball went into the cuff on the fly.
- 1:27:35He won the use of a new car for one year for the eighth.
- 1:27:38It was the first time a hole in one had been recorded in the tournament.
- 1:27:42Seifert at 53 years of age is a pro at the Sleepy Hommel Country Club in Becker'sville.
- 1:27:49He had been on the pro tour for 18 years and occasionally played in PGA events.
- 1:27:57What was the score of the Kansas City Royals leading the Minnesota Twins two to nothing?
- 1:28:03Let's go back to the Royals Stadium in Kansas City for the bottom half of the sixth inning.
- 1:28:11The Royals two to nothing. Bottom of the sixth.
- 1:28:14The Royals two runs, six hits, no errors.
- 1:28:17Minnesota, no runs, four hits, and no errors.
- 1:28:21It'll be George Fret, Hal McCray, and John Mayberry.
- 1:28:26The Royals going in the fifth.
- 1:28:29Singles by Allen and Freddie Totec, a couple of points out.
- 1:28:34The first run coming across on a wild hit.
- 1:28:37And then a triple by Tom Pochette off the glove of Lyman Mounstock to score a Frank White.
- 1:28:43The pitch to George Fret is high, ball one.
- 1:28:46George and Anthony will single in the first.
- 1:28:49He doubled down the left field line in the fourth.
- 1:28:53Outside, ball two, Joe Hal.
- 1:28:57Bottom of the sixth.
- 1:29:01Dave Golt runs the deal.
- 1:29:03Way outside, ball three.
- 1:29:08So Dave, who hasn't walked anybody, but he's hit a batter.
- 1:29:12In danger of walking the Royals' leadoff man.
- 1:29:15Three times the Royals have placed their leadoff men aboard.
- 1:29:20George takes ball four.
- 1:29:29The spread is on, here is Hal McCray.
- 1:29:33Hal's rounded into a double play in the first.
- 1:29:36And then a run out for the third baseman, Mike Cubby, in last time up there.
- 1:29:48One on, nobody else.
- 1:29:49Shoot-up of the Royals from the bottom of the sixth.
- 1:29:51There goes Fret.
- 1:29:52The pitch to McCray is followed back and out of play.
- 1:29:55Hal trying to put the gap between the first baseman, Rod Carew, and the second baseman,
- 1:30:01Ronnie Randall.
- 1:30:03Randall was going over to cover second base, so you can imagine with Carew tied up with a runner.
- 1:30:10And Randall breaking for the bag how much room there was between the two for Hal McCray.
- 1:30:16Hal fouled it off in the count of one-one.
- 1:30:24No ball for the strike.
- 1:30:26John Mayberry with the next.
- 1:30:35Randall leads the stretch, not running.
- 1:30:37McCray hits a Wilkerson Church Center out-goes Bob Randall, the second baseman to tuck it away.
- 1:30:44So Hal McCray is down one away.
- 1:30:46That will fall on fourth station identification.
- 1:30:49This is the Royals face-balling atler.
- 1:30:53This is the American Forces radio and television service.
- 1:31:06Jenny Matthews in front, right is Royals Stadium.
- 1:31:09Ramsey's Royals Stadium.
- 1:31:12Royals two, Minnesota nothing.
- 1:31:15John Mayberry at the plate.
- 1:31:17George Fred at first.
- 1:31:18He wants to throw. He was only one step off the bank.
- 1:31:26Banner is being carried to and fro throughout the ballpark.
- 1:31:30Each in its own way drawing a tear.
- 1:31:33Mayberry slams and lofts a high pop-up.
- 1:31:36The third baseman Mike Covey is in the foul ground to make the catch.
- 1:31:40And it's two away.
- 1:31:42So Mayberry fouls out, Fred at first with two downs and a battered Al Cowan.
- 1:31:48Al Cowan.
- 1:31:49Al is single in the fifth.
- 1:31:51He ignited that two in fifth inning.
- 1:31:54His first time up, he hit a comeback into the mound.
- 1:31:58Tom Vashorek of Solmer's Point Atlanta in his fourth.
- 1:32:02Atlanta is playing in Cincinnati with a red plate three to two.
- 1:32:06They are in the seventh inning.
- 1:32:13Al Cowan takes him.
- 1:32:18Fred has 21 stolen bases.
- 1:32:23Dave Gulp to the bell.
- 1:32:25There goes Fred.
- 1:32:26They pitch out.
- 1:32:27The shirt stops covering second and the throw is there to get him.
- 1:32:31So the twin's guessing right.
- 1:32:33The catcher is pitching out and his throw to Smalley was a time to get Fred.
- 1:32:38And in the inning.
- 1:32:40So for DeViles, no runs, no hits.
- 1:32:42The leadoff walk and nobody left.
- 1:32:45And the end of six minutes of play.
- 1:32:47DeViles to Minnesota, nothing.
- 1:32:50Johnny Pesky will be the only coach to return with the Boston Red Sox next season,
- 1:32:56according to manager Don Zimmer.
- 1:32:59Coaching coach Dan Williams, bullpen coach Don Bryant, and scout coach Eddie Popovsky.
- 1:33:05We're down Friday from the Chicago, rather the coaching staff after meeting with Zimmer
- 1:33:10Friar to Boston's night game with the Baltimore Orioles.
- 1:33:14New coaches will be named before or during the World Series.
- 1:33:17Zimmer said the move is not like the firing.
- 1:33:20We're all brought here by another manager.
- 1:33:22Is this the case of bringing in the people we want?
- 1:33:25It's the cruel part of manager.
- 1:33:28The first base coach to pass two seasons, that is the Red Sox of 1963 and Ford of 1964.
- 1:33:36He rejoined the coaching staff on the urging of the glove.
- 1:33:59The first base coach to pass two seasons, that is the Red Sox of 1963 and Ford of 1964.
- 1:34:09The first base coach to pass two seasons, that is the Red Sox of 1963 and Ford of 1964.

- 1:34:30The first base coach to pass two seasons, that is the Red Sox of 1963 and Ford of 1964.
- 1:34:43The first base coach to pass two seasons, that is the Red Sox of 1963 and Ford of 1964.
- 1:34:55The first base coach to pass two seasons, that is the Red Sox of 1963 and Ford of 1964.
- 1:35:08The first base coach to pass two seasons, that is the Red Sox of 1963 and Ford of 1964.
- 1:35:20The first base coach to pass two seasons, that is the Red Sox of 1963 and Ford of 1964.
- 1:35:33The first base coach to pass two seasons, that is the Red Sox of 1963 and Ford of 1964.
- 1:35:45The first base coach to pass two seasons, that is the Red Sox of 1963 and Ford of 1964.
- 1:35:58Happy birthday.
- 1:36:03Larry Heisler hitter, heard a trucking out flight, right hander's mannered.
- 1:36:08Heisler the 268 with 14 over.
- 1:36:15Raise the plan with 14 over.
- 1:36:18Mayberry holds the road at first a bit, knocks down the ground of the middle base,
- 1:36:23and then in field, that second base with 20 to hold on right there, notice wheels come all back to the end field.
- 1:36:30And the twins now have the time left aboard with one after the seven.
- 1:36:34And the hitter, Dan Ford, and you have to worry, you have to worry about Dan Ford's power right here.
- 1:36:45Ford hitting 268.
- 1:36:5120 hold run, 86 runs about an inch.
- 1:36:57Seven of those 20 hold runs have come against the Oakland 86 here.
- 1:37:02Then he's telling you how much he's helped the Royals.
- 1:37:05Well now he's in a position to hurt them, and out comes Galen Sisco, the Royal fishing coach.
- 1:37:09Left hander Steve Mentoli, right hander Mark Lattell are working in the Royal Pro-Fest.
- 1:37:16Galen Sisco taking a slow walk to the mound, giving them time to heat up a little bit more out there.
- 1:37:22The hitter now even at six of beef were under seven, the Royals have hit it up against the twins.
- 1:37:30Well while the Royals talk things over on the mound.
- 1:37:43Dan Ford is ready to hit.
- 1:37:53He has hit the ball hard twice off first.
- 1:38:00Fighting her at second, and Heisel at first, and Doug Byrd set the goal, reading signs from John Lawson. The Royals play four feet from the ball.
- 1:38:14Dan Ford, a man who can change the whole complex of her ball game with one swing of the bat.
- 1:38:22He represents the lead, Russ.
- 1:38:29What a tremendous night here at the Royal Stadium.
- 1:38:34And Doug Byrd does not want this one to get away.
- 1:38:38Doug taking time.
- 1:38:41Now he's, here's the pitch.
- 1:38:44Right field on the outside corner of the breaking section, it counts even one and one on Ford.
- 1:38:49Doug wanting a ground ball, looking for a double play.
- 1:38:58Byrd with four strikes out, as won't know her.
- 1:39:06Right, one one fifth.
- 1:39:08Down into the dirt block, nicely by John Lawson, his two balls and a strike.
- 1:39:14Ford has the twins only after they hit five singles and four doubles for the Minnesota Twins tonight.
- 1:39:24Ford takes them waiting.
- 1:39:26And Doug Byrd running, here's the two one fifth.
- 1:39:29Strike, two, ball, and the count's even out.
- 1:39:36Ford has struck out 117 times this year.
- 1:39:40And Doug Byrd could use one right here.
- 1:39:47Ford with a big gap in right center, tried to block it his first time up, but notice how Randall ball.
- 1:39:53Byrd's set, here's a stretch to dig to a pitch.
- 1:40:00Now a little low, that's a full count three and two, and now Byrd has to make a pitch.
- 1:40:05We said he hasn't locked anyone, he's seldom will.
- 1:40:09Only 30 men all year in 197 innings.
- 1:40:15So the odds are that Dan Ford is going to get a pitch he'll have to swing at.
- 1:40:24Early leading sign, the pitch, he walks in, ball four into Mason's order.
- 1:40:34That move, the tying run, the scoring position was won out.
- 1:40:38The lead run is turned, and Mike Covey did it for the play, and he is bounded out wide.
- 1:40:51Lattell and Midori in the ball pit, appear to be running.
- 1:40:58Covey, the left-hander batters, sets in at average, 257, three home runs.
- 1:41:04Three sixth runs about a dip.
- 1:41:10And now Byrd with a man he has to get him to seven.
- 1:41:13Left-hander batter waiting.
- 1:41:15They just loaded one out the stretch, the pitch.
- 1:41:20Just missed the ball, ball one.
- 1:41:23And that's certainly a little unhappy, kind of flaps at the ball as it comes back.
- 1:41:31Well, the turnovers are double play in this ball game.
- 1:41:34They need one here.
- 1:41:36Covey does his two-ground balls.
- 1:41:38They need another one.
- 1:41:39The stretch by Doug Byrd, the one open.
- 1:41:42It's a strike, and it can't even one-on-one.
- 1:41:49The outfield, straight away, and not deep.
- 1:41:56Byrd, he's battling to keep the players off the scoreboard in the seventh.
- 1:42:00Here's the stretch, the pitch to Covey.
- 1:42:03Just missed, ball two, and it's two and one.
- 1:42:07Doug Byrd has him with a breaking six inside, trying to strike those.
- 1:42:13Bob Randall in the on-deck circle.
- 1:42:18Covey sets on the back line of the batter's box waiting.
- 1:42:22Byrd's running, the two-one pitch.
- 1:42:24Foul on a play, and it counts even two balls to strike.
- 1:42:38And now Byrd and Covey's little battle.
- 1:42:43Byrd does not want to go to three and two on it.
- 1:42:47He's running, here comes the pitch.
- 1:42:50Covey swings, it's a line drive towards right center field at the base end of the ballgame, the lead side.
- 1:42:55And here's the third base, it looks like he's going to score at stand four.
- 1:42:59He's a round turn, hit it for the play to throw, he is safe.
- 1:43:03And the twins wait, wait it to.
- 1:43:06Covey's double with a gap in right center field.
- 1:43:11And he has cleared the base at the Minnesota Quinn.
- 1:43:15He's got a four-pointer score, an iso score, and a four-pointer score.
- 1:43:21And with one full, the twins have taken the lead in the seventh.
- 1:43:26And here's Bob Randall with a hundred seconds and one out.
- 1:43:38So the world's going to have to come from behind.
- 1:43:44And a rocket through the gap in right center that kicked off the wall.
- 1:43:49The stretch by Byrd to pitch to Randall, foul, but strike one.
- 1:43:59It started with one man out, strangled by Weininger and Heisel, a walk to fourth.
- 1:44:03And then Covey just rips it.
- 1:44:09Here comes the pitch to Bob Randall again, ground ball half-bred.
- 1:44:12He checks the letter of second base, fires to Byrd.
- 1:44:15In time there are two men out.
- 1:44:18Randall out, serves to Byrd, Covey called to second.
- 1:44:22And here comes Steve Broad.
- 1:44:26Out comes Weininger's on.
- 1:44:29That might be it for Doug Byrd.
- 1:44:34Looks like what's at his seam and gory will be the new royal picture, and here's the situation.
- 1:44:39We're in the top of the seventh, two out and a letter of second for Minnesota, the twins of score three.
- 1:44:46With Steve McCoury coming on to pitch with two men out now.
- 1:44:50Minnesota three, the royals two.
- 1:44:55Steve McCoury out of the bullpen for the royals.
- 1:44:59Mingo makes his 54th appearance of the year.
- 1:45:01He's one five, one five.
- 1:45:03He's safe mid-game.
- 1:45:05The children have a 2.35, 84th inning.
- 1:45:09Not worth it.
- 1:45:12So Doug Byrd is gone, and Byrd can't possibly be the winner now.
- 1:45:15He can only be the loser.
- 1:45:19But the royals can come back to win it and get him off the hook, or at least tie it.
- 1:45:25And Covey will face one down at hitting Steve Broad.
- 1:45:30Mike Covey, the big man for the twins at the moment at second base.
- 1:45:35His three-run triple is him and the twins' later.
- 1:45:40So Broad steps in, 0 for three, and then Gory ready to go to work.
- 1:45:51Mingo trying to end it here at the seventh and keep the royals within a run.
- 1:45:59Broad's average, 288.
- 1:46:01Lee Hall runs 60 RBI, the royals play him straight away.
- 1:46:07Mingo reading signs of a threat, but that's his first delivery of the ball outside of low ball one.
- 1:46:25Gory's good again, now the 1-0 bit.
- 1:46:29Missed away ball two.
- 1:46:32So Gory has missed outside with two pitches.
- 1:46:36Mingo, who got blindsided with a block and injured his knee in that battle royal on the open the other night.
- 1:46:48Mingo, club on his Navy, signed from Wampus.
- 1:46:52He said, here comes the 2-0 pitch now.
- 1:46:55Broad flings and chops his foul toward the royal dugout.
- 1:46:58Two balls and a strike.
- 1:47:19Looking ahead to the royal seventh.
- 1:47:22It'll be Cowan, Gwadun, and Vodek.
- 1:47:26Stretched by Mingo to this.
- 1:47:29Chopped foul off the first base side that counts even two and two.
- 1:47:42The twins with three hits and a lock in the inning.
- 1:47:50Then Gory going 2-0 on them.
- 1:47:52Broad is now back to 2-2.
- 1:47:55Stretched by the left-hander, down the pitch.
- 1:47:59And leaning out of the way, and it's a full count, 3-2.
- 1:48:02Broad had to give ground and get out of there.
- 1:48:10And then Gory now at 3-2 with Broad.
- 1:48:14Here's the stretch.
- 1:48:16The pitch.
- 1:48:18Fly ball right field. That should do it.
- 1:48:21Al Cowan just can't gender it.
- 1:48:24Makes the catch and the inning's over.
- 1:48:26Broad flies to right, but the twins get three runs on three hits.
- 1:48:30No errors. The man left.
- 1:48:31And we go to the bottom of the seventh.
- 1:48:33It's now the twins three, royal two.
- 1:48:37The bottom of the seventh is the royal stadium, three to two, Quins now.
- 1:48:41And it'll be Al Cowan, John Watson, and Fred Potec for the royals.
- 1:48:46They try to regain the lead.
- 1:48:48The royals with two in the fifth.
- 1:48:50The twins with three in the seventh.
- 1:48:53Cowan steps in, Alan Singles, and bounce out to the pitcher.
- 1:49:00Alan Singles, going to the royal two on fifth.
- 1:49:03The first pitch from Dave Goltz is a ball, ball one.
- 1:49:06John Zucamich over for the Phillies in the ninth inning.
- 1:49:09It's first of the year.
- 1:49:10The Phillies beat the Mets two to one.
- 1:49:12Former Royal King Garber got the win.
- 1:49:14Kyle Sips by Cowan, one and one.
- 1:49:17Jerry Kuzma's losing that game.
- 1:49:19Garber's nine and three.
- 1:49:20Kuzma 21 and 10.
- 1:49:26This great crowd in O'Neill City, I'm wanting a seventh inning rally.
- 1:49:32Right into working into Gwen Fulpitt.
- 1:49:35The royals have six in, off Dave Goltz.
- 1:49:38The twins have seven in.
- 1:49:41They leave way to do.
- 1:49:43One more pitch to Cowan.
- 1:49:44Ground ball, tap down in front of the plate.
- 1:49:47It's going to be a tough play for Leininger, straight to the plate.
- 1:49:50The royals have a dying run of order to settle.
- 1:50:00So Cowan's on the board with good speed.
- 1:50:03We'll see how the royals play it now.
- 1:50:11Steve Rye and Al playing center field for the Minnesota Twins.
- 1:50:15We play Lyman Plottoch.
- 1:50:22Lyman Plottoch apparently tore the ligaments in his left thumb.
- 1:50:26So Steve Rye is playing center field.
- 1:50:28Here's John Watson.
- 1:50:30He's scoring the royals for a grudge.
- 1:50:32Safe on a fielder's choice.
- 1:50:34He's flying to right.
- 1:50:38Cowan has stolen 23 bases this year.
- 1:50:46The pitch was in front.
- 1:50:47A good one in front of the plate.
- 1:50:49Leininger's only play to first, not as Watson, but the runner is second now, Al Cowan.
- 1:50:54A sacrifice.
- 1:50:55The play going 2-4.
- 1:50:57And the dying run is going for the Canadian Alphapritt project.
- 1:51:01Now comes left manager Gene Locke.
- 1:51:03That may do it for Goltz.
- 1:51:11Leininger headed for the mound.
- 1:51:13The shortstop, Roy Smalley coming in.
- 1:51:20Locke is talking to his right-hander, Dave Goltz.
- 1:51:23He has not signaled the bullpen yet.
- 1:51:25And he's going to stay with Goltz apparently.
- 1:51:29Locke is a hitter.
- 1:51:31He has singled and granted out to the pitcher.
- 1:51:34Cowan's a single, Walton a sacrifice.
- 1:51:37And the dying runner's out there.
- 1:51:43Leininger still at the mound talking to Dave Goltz's pitcher.
- 1:51:54Locke steps in.
- 1:51:58Gene Locke has decided to stay with Goltz.
- 1:52:03Frank White at the on-deck circle.
- 1:52:06Boyle's trying to sign the game bottom of the seventh.
- 1:52:09Goltz reading signs from Leininger on the stretch.
- 1:52:12The pitch.
- 1:52:13Locke takes the side strike one.
- 1:52:17Leading 2-44 with 43 runs about it in.
- 1:52:27Locke is taking a look at Al Cowan who has a good lead of seconds.
- 1:52:33Now he's ready.
- 1:52:34Here comes the stretch, the pitch to Botech.
- 1:52:36Leipz left the butt and took a strike.
- 1:52:38He's in the hole strike two.
- 1:52:40It's a nice to call.
- 1:52:41With the play down by her, Gene Locke.
- 1:52:51Al Cowan with great speed carries the tying run.
- 1:52:58Botech in the hole.
- 1:53:01Goltz getting signed.
- 1:53:03Here's the stretch for the right-hander, the pitch.
- 1:53:07Just swinging a ball high one and two.
- 1:53:11Jeff Burrows is homered for the ranger.
- 1:53:13In the fifth nobody on his 17th.
- 1:53:15Texas and Chicago are tied 4-4.
- 1:53:24Red Botech waiting now.
- 1:53:25Goltz walking behind the mound to run down the baseball.
- 1:53:40Goltz back on the mound.
- 1:53:41Botech back at a batter clock.
- 1:53:43Run through the count.
- 1:53:45Stretch by the right-hander, the pitch.
- 1:53:48Well, ball's to foul.
- 1:53:49Chuck Hiller, the Royal Third Base coach, there.
- 1:53:58The outfield straight away against Botech.
- 1:54:02The field is deep dry as hell.
- 1:54:10Now Goltz getting ready again as the tie for Burt Weininger.
- 1:54:15Here's the stretch, the pitch.
- 1:54:18Chuck him out.
- 1:54:19There are two men out.
- 1:54:20Botech down swinging.
- 1:54:25The first strike out of the game for Dave Goltz.
- 1:54:29And we're going to have a pitch in for Frank White.
- 1:54:31Out comes Cookie Rojas.
- 1:54:33The second pitch is for Chris McLean.
- 1:54:48Cookie Rojas to beat out a perfect run in Oakland to get the
- 1:54:52Royal Third run in a game Wednesday night.
- 1:54:54The Royal One 4-0.
- 1:54:57A fairing of the Fed getter has two hits and 22 times the weight
- 1:55:00of the Fed getter.
- 1:55:02The W has been swinging about well the last week.
- 1:55:05It's average overall at 238.
- 1:55:10Osmo Kitt with me next if Rojas gets the board.
- 1:55:14But Weininger is allowed to talk to his sicker,
- 1:55:16Bot Kerou, the Burt Base moment on the conference.
- 1:55:22Out to the mound to break up the conference is a white up by
- 1:55:24our Jim McKean.
- 1:55:28Rojas stands outside the batter's box swinging the bat.
- 1:55:35Three to ten wins.
- 1:55:38If the Royals are to tie it in a seven it's going to be up to
- 1:55:41Cookie.
- 1:55:44And now Weininger back behind the plate.
- 1:55:47Gallants get the lead at second.
- 1:55:51Dave Goltz the threat, the first pitch to Rojas.
- 1:55:54Cookie takes the ball inside, ball one.
- 1:56:05Third baseman Mike Covey deep, barely near the line.
- 1:56:09Outfield played away, not deep.
- 1:56:14Dave Goltz trying to claim some dirt out of these fights out
- 1:56:24behind the mound.
- 1:56:26And Cookie shifts out of the batter's box again to loosen up.
- 1:56:30Now he's back in.
- 1:56:34Dave Goltz the right hander looks to put Weininger for a tie.
- 1:56:39Here comes the one-oh pitch to Rojas, ball two.
- 1:56:49The Royals, batman to tie it.
- 1:56:54Rojas waves the bat around waiting.
- 1:56:58Here's the threat to O'Bitt, striking it two and one.
- 1:57:03Cookie taking.
- 1:57:08So kept kneeling in the odd deck circle.
- 1:57:11Tom would have singled and dribbled tonight his three times at the
- 1:57:13plate.
- 1:57:16Now Goltz off the mound again.
- 1:57:19Looks into the twin dugout for a moment, now comes back on top.
- 1:57:22Again starts kicking at the dirt around the pitching rubber.
- 1:57:29Now he's ready, two and one on Rojas.
- 1:57:32Here's the threat and the pitch.
- 1:57:35Now Paul Hill at the middle, batting this.
- 1:57:38Now coming to round three, right coverley has a chance of
- 1:57:41burrowing three.
- 1:57:43Here's the throw to second, Rojas in three.
- 1:57:52And look at Cookie at second base, crossing his hands,
- 1:57:57trying to flex this in the air.
- 1:58:01And standing ovation for 40,000 fans of the yard.
- 1:58:20Nice fly.
- 1:58:35And Foget just put the Royals right back in front.
- 1:58:38Rojas is second with two out.
- 1:58:40And this stadium is alive.
- 1:58:44It is filled with capacity and they are on their free flowing.
- 1:58:50Foget still for three steps in.
- 1:58:54The stretch of this, it's a ball.
- 1:58:58Amos Oda's putting an active Foget kick into it.
- 1:59:02And there's action in the Minnesota bullpen.
- 1:59:09Foget has been in one of the Royals three runs.
- 1:59:14Now Colts, not satisfied with the time, makes contact.
- 1:59:19Rojas throw the ground ball right back up the middle to tie the game.
- 1:59:24The Royals have come rolling right back.
- 1:59:28Now Colts is ready, the one-oh pitch to Foget.
- 1:59:31Inside Wilds in.
- 1:59:33The third is going to hold on right there.
- 1:59:54Johnson and Brugmeier, Johnson on the right hand,
- 1:59:57and Brugmeier on the left hand are working on the Minnesota bullpen.
- 2:00:01No on Tom Foget now.
- 2:00:05Second Wilds pitch in the game, charged to Colts.
- 2:00:09The stretch of the pitch to Foget, striking at two and one.
- 2:00:13Foget taking it all the way.
- 2:00:17Thomas Leeds has averaged a 3-0-5 with two for three here tonight.
- 2:00:21And a big run at third base now with two out of the seven.
- 2:00:25The Royals now fighting to regain the lead after tying it.
- 2:00:30Close to Weineger, right hander to the stretch, two-one to Foget.
- 2:00:36Ball high and a three and one.
- 2:00:44Left fielder Larry Heisel, center fielder Steve Hyde, extremely shallow.
- 2:00:50Boy, if Foget can plant a gap in left center, then he's a good option to be a hitter.
- 2:00:56He can run for a while, but three-one pitch.
- 2:00:59Foul on a play and a full count three and two.
- 2:01:04The lead runs just 90 feet away.
- 2:01:13Foget trying to get him home with red notice to the plate in the seventh.
- 2:01:25Two strikes and gold, leading signs for Weineger.
- 2:01:29Here is the stretch and a bit.
- 2:01:33Ball 40 walking.
- 2:01:43Here comes Otis, the second walk he's used by Foget.
- 2:01:48And now comes DeMott, that's going to do it for Dave Gold.
- 2:01:51He wants Johnson, the right hander to pitch to Amos Otis.
- 2:01:57So Dave Gold, caving the battle.
- 2:02:01He cannot be the winner, he can only be the loser.
- 2:02:04Doug Byrd is off the hook.
- 2:02:07And as Gold sets for a dugout, here's the situation.
- 2:02:09We're in the bottom of the seventh with two men out.
- 2:02:12The Royals with runners at first and third have battled back to Dias, the scorer.
- 2:02:17Royals three wins three.
- 2:02:20Tom Johnson, the right hander out of the Minnesota Bullpen, making his 18th appearance of the year.
- 2:02:25And he's been tough.
- 2:02:26In 48 innings, he's given 43 hits.
- 2:02:29One three and lost one.
- 2:02:31His earned run average, 2.64.
- 2:02:34Two-face right-handed hitting Amos Otis.
- 2:02:38In a 3-3 ball game with two out of the seventh.
- 2:02:43And the Royals with runners at first and third.
- 2:02:49Two out single by Cookie Rojas, it's tied the game.
- 2:02:57Johnson says he's ready.
- 2:02:58The right hander backs off the mound to set himself back up on top.
- 2:03:03Otis sets in.
- 2:03:08George Flick would be next if Otis keeps the inning alive.
- 2:03:12Again, the sweet crowd starts to roar in Royals video.
- 2:03:21Johnson to the first pitch, Otis.
- 2:03:24Outside ball one.
- 2:03:31Burtmeyer, the left hander continues to always been going by a right hander now in the Minnesota Bullpen.
- 2:03:38John Johnson leading sign from Flick Weijager.
- 2:03:43The stretch, Flick's still in.
- 2:03:46One and missed, and a count even one and one.
- 2:03:48Otis after a breaking stick away.
- 2:04:01Otis out of the battered box for a moment, Rojas at third, Burtmeyer gets it first.
- 2:04:10Otis trying to put the Royals back on top, as for time out and get to now is Johnson.
- 2:04:15Delivered, but the pitch didn't count.
- 2:04:17Played out by Jim McKean at call time.
- 2:04:21The Royals are now off into the swim, eight to seven.
- 2:04:29Now Johnson again ready, here comes the one-one pitch, Otis.
- 2:04:33Outside a mobile, too, and a two-and-one.
- 2:04:43John Johnson to the Rockin' Bay.
- 2:04:48Now kicks at the number.
- 2:04:51Otis getting some more time, John.
- 2:04:53He's finding love, and now they're getting set.
- 2:04:58Here's the stretch, two-one-pitch.
- 2:05:01Way and a miss, and a count, even two balls, two strikes.
- 2:05:14Otis with a three-run homer against the twins, the last during the Minnesota and the ninth inning beat the twins, eight to six.
- 2:05:21Trying to put them on top here, the pitch way outside, and a full count, three and two.
- 2:05:27So now Johnson has to make a pitch to Otis, a low to base of the press.
- 2:05:33Whether or not Tom Volkett will be going, two out and a three-two count.
- 2:05:40That's a decision on the advantage for the Royals.
- 2:05:46Oh, what a great moment in the Royals stadium.
- 2:05:49Otis out of the batter's box now threats himself.
- 2:05:54Tom Johnson ready to pitch, there goes Volkett, a foul, and a count remains three and two.
- 2:06:02Volkett will have to go back to first.
- 2:06:08A single by Cowan started the inning, Waffin sacrificed to the second.
- 2:06:14That was two out, Rohans up at the pitch hitter, Drill will cycle the center to send him home.
- 2:06:27Otis again, taking some time getting back in the batter's box.
- 2:06:32Now Amos does he, buddy.
- 2:06:35Johnson into the stretch, the three-two pitch, strike three, Cowan in the inning over.
- 2:06:45A breaking pitch got him looking.
- 2:06:49And the inning's over but the Royals have tied it.
- 2:06:52One run on two hits.
- 2:06:56So where is the two men left?
- 2:06:57We'll go to the eighth, the Royals three, twins three.
- 2:07:04Well, we go to the eighth inning, tied three, three.
- 2:07:10The ball game now belongs to Steven and Cory and Tom Johnson, two relay centers.
- 2:07:16Then Cory will face Royce, Molly, Rod Carew, and Lyman Bostock, the number two, three, and four hitters in the twins' order.
- 2:07:23To the eighth, the three, three tie, and once again here's Denny.
- 2:07:26Hi, sir. Royce, Molly has two hits, single to the first and he's single to the sixth. He grounded out in the fourth.
- 2:07:34Royals three runs, eight hits, the twins three runs on seven hits.
- 2:07:39A final score for Boston, the Red Sox, seven, Baltimore, four.
- 2:07:43Requires the letter, holds for a system loss, may have 15,749 in Boston.
- 2:07:52Royce, Molly will be on the right side against Steven Zorich.
- 2:07:58Steven has faced one man, he got Steve Braun on a fly ball to the right field to end the seventh, hitting in which the twins scored their three runs.
- 2:08:07Require the ball for a strike on one.
- 2:08:12So Steve will have to work his way through Molly, Carew, and then Bry.
- 2:08:20No balls on strike, here's the pitch.
- 2:08:23The screwball outside, one ball, one strike.
- 2:08:26Steve's screwball breaking away from the right-hand batter.
- 2:08:30One and one, nobody on, nobody off.
- 2:08:33Top of the eighth, it's tied three, three.
- 2:08:36Outside corner, that time the screwball filed the honor, edge to the count one and two.
- 2:08:41John Watham doing the catcher, he took the roll-off, stayed in the game.
- 2:08:45He is now at second base.
- 2:08:49The third, five seconds short, may vary at first.
- 2:08:53And the outfield for Ken Otis and Collins from left to right.
- 2:08:58One and two, the count on Royce, slowing.
- 2:09:03He's already back in comes, missed the outside corner, two-two.
- 2:09:08So Steve's keeping everything away from slowing, and he's run the count to two-two.
- 2:09:17Signed him in, here's the pitch.
- 2:09:20Popped up, down the right field line, everybody chasing it, it's a foul ball,
- 2:09:24and may vary half-quite catch up to it, the ball is trying to top the rail.
- 2:09:29And it bounces back deep into the crowd, and the count on slowly, two-two.
- 2:09:35The ball just out of reach.
- 2:09:39May vary, roll-off, and Al Collins all in pursuit.
- 2:09:46Steve Mungore now getting a new baseball from the plate-up buyer, Jim McKean.
- 2:09:52The Cincinnati Reds victorious tonight, they turn back Atlanta five to two.
- 2:09:56Gary Nolan won his 15th.
- 2:09:59Ruthland the loser, they had 20,000 in-sensing.
- 2:10:02The two-two pitch to Swalley.
- 2:10:05John barely missed, and Mungore looks questioningly at the plate-up buyer, Jim McKean.
- 2:10:11Steve saw the pitch with a strike.
- 2:10:16Instead of full count three and two, Rod Carew coming up next.
- 2:10:22The three-two pitch, another foul ball, this one well back into the ground.
- 2:10:31Three balls and two strikes on Roy Swalley.
- 2:10:36He's trying to get the truth started at the top of the eighth.
- 2:10:42Ben Gori reading signs, left-hander Redding and Geo, fly ball left field.
- 2:10:48Tom Fokette to his left, underneath the ball, went away.
- 2:10:59Roy Swalley retired on a fly ball in the left field, and it is Rod Carew.
- 2:11:04A single in the first, he rolled back to Mayberry in the fourth, bounced into a fourth down to end of sixth.
- 2:11:21Jim and Gori to Rod Carew, outside corner, well thrown, 0-1.
- 2:11:35The ball's one strike on the Minnesota first baseman.
- 2:11:40On the way, this one's slicing down through the senior club and bounces off one of the windows, and the count went two.
- 2:11:52The Royals are Jim Carew to left field.
- 2:11:59Tapping it to, tying him in.
- 2:12:03Bingo, Redding and Geo, breaking ball, whacked into center, base hit.
- 2:12:10Rod Carew is aboard. The twins have one on with one out, and Steve Rye coming up.
- 2:12:19Steve Rye hitting 256, 22 RBIs and two home runs.
- 2:12:27Rod Carew with 48 stolen bases.
- 2:12:31Jim and Gori has an excellent move to first base.
- 2:12:36And he'll keep Rod Carew as close to the bag as he can.
- 2:12:41He comes to the plate, and Rye hits it into right field and down the line for a hit.
- 2:12:46How is Miller to get it? Rye's on his way to second base, long throw, base at second base, cookie.
- 2:12:54Running the ball back to the infield, as Rod Carew spinning around second going into third base.
- 2:13:01So Rye doubles down the right field line, runners in second and third one away, and Butch Weidiger coming up.
- 2:13:10Mark Lattell and Tom Hall throwing in the bullpen.
- 2:13:14Weidiger is a swift hitter.
- 2:13:16There is one out and first base is open for the Royals pocket over at the mound, Rohan Waffen and Edmund Gori.
- 2:13:31Out comes Royals manager, Whitey Herson.
- 2:13:34Smallie retired on a fly ball into left field.
- 2:13:38And Edmund Gori was 0-2 on Rod Carew.
- 2:13:42And it appears that he got a breaking ball up, and Rod Carew just threw it into center field.
- 2:13:48And a pitching change will be made.
- 2:13:51So Mark Lattell will be brought in.
- 2:13:55A pitching change in the eighth inning, and the score is the Royals 3 and the Twins 3.
- 2:14:01Back at the Royals stadium, it's 3-3 in the eighth, but the Twins have runners in second and third one away.
- 2:14:07And Mark Lattell, the new Royals pitcher.
- 2:14:13For Mark Lattell, this marks his sixth seed at the base.
- 2:14:17Eight wins, three losses, and 16 saves.
- 2:14:23Steven Gori has 10 saves, Mark Lattell showing the way with 16.
- 2:14:29The Royals are in a tough spot.
- 2:14:31The Royals are trying to win it all tonight.
- 2:14:34And the Twins, down 2-0 in the seventh, got three runs to take a one-run lead.
- 2:14:41Back in, the Royals are on Tuckie Rojas, single to tie it at the bottom of the seventh.
- 2:14:45And the Twins now seem intent on grabbing the lead right back.
- 2:14:50So Mark Lattell, who can strike you out, but who sometimes is wild, has perhaps the biggest assignment of his young life.
- 2:15:02Another youngster, Butch Weineger, is the first man that Mark Lattell will face.
- 2:15:10First bases open, George Flett coming to the round, so we'll see what the Royals do.
- 2:15:17If you walk Butch Weineger, it would blow the bases, set up a force anywhere.
- 2:15:24And the Royals then could gamble on an inning-ending double play.
- 2:15:27And that's what they're going to do, they're going to walk Weineger.
- 2:15:30On the other side of the coin, this puts more pressure on the pitcher, Mark Lattell.
- 2:15:36With the bases loaded in a 3-3 game, there is no margin for error.
- 2:15:43So you are forcing Mark Lattell to throw strikes.
- 2:15:48Larry Heisel would be coming up.
- 2:15:50Larry and Outfielder with power, who will strike out.
- 2:15:55And really, it's your classic matchup, strikeout pitcher against a power hitter who will strike out.
- 2:16:01There's the ball for the Weineger, and here comes Heisel.
- 2:16:12Larry Heisel has struck out twice.
- 2:16:15Both times against Doug Byrne, he's singled and scored.
- 2:16:19So Larry, one out of three as he stands in.
- 2:16:22In the three-ball game, the twins have not hit the Royals 9-8.
- 2:16:26With one out here in the inning, Carew has singled dry doubles.
- 2:16:30And now the bases are loaded one away.
- 2:16:33The Royals then feel the double play depth.
- 2:16:35And Mark Lattell facing Larry Heisel.
- 2:16:39The windup, the pitch.
- 2:16:41Five-all run.
- 2:16:44Rob Carew, the runner in third, always a threat to steal home.
- 2:16:5015 times in his career, Rob Carew has stolen home.
- 2:16:55And Cookie Mohawk coming to the mound.
- 2:16:59And a good guess would be that one of the things that Cookie is talking too much would tell about, Rob Carew.
- 2:17:06Also, the fact that really there's no margin for error.
- 2:17:11You can't be cute now.
- 2:17:12You have to rear back and throw strikes.
- 2:17:15And give them your best shot, and what happens happens.
- 2:17:18So we'll see.
- 2:17:19One and 0.
- 2:17:20Bases loaded.
- 2:17:21Here's the pitch.
- 2:17:22Long enough, the backfall of the shot, one and one.
- 2:17:31Mark with that outstanding backfall.
- 2:17:33His velocity is as good as anybody's on the Royals staff.
- 2:17:39He also has a quick shot-breaking slider.
- 2:17:42Inside, Watson going to his knees.
- 2:17:44And I don't know if John was crossed up or not.
- 2:17:47But immediately after crawling that pitch inside, Watson made a beeline to the mound, and he stands in front of the mound.
- 2:17:55His right hand on Mark Liddell's shoulder, and they talk it over.
- 2:17:59Two balls and a strike, so a very, very big pitch coming up.
- 2:18:06Bases loaded.
- 2:18:08Top of the eighth, it's tied 3-3.
- 2:18:12The crowd quiet.
- 2:18:14Crowd test through, itching down the line.
- 2:18:17The 2-1 pitch.
- 2:18:19Slider followed away in the count to two.
- 2:18:26Mark is guarding that base ball.
- 2:18:28He wants one that feels just right.
- 2:18:30And he doesn't like that one.
- 2:18:34Ready hot deck coming in from shortstop to say something to Mark.
- 2:18:42You can just cut the tension with a knife at Royals Stadium now.
- 2:18:50Two balls, two strikes, bases loaded, one away.
- 2:18:54Littell keeping away the eye on Carew.
- 2:18:56Here's the pitch.
- 2:18:57Sliders down in the breath.
- 2:18:59They come home, out at home, to first base.
- 2:19:02Base.
- 2:19:09Shortstop to Don Laughlin for the fourth out on Roy Carew.
- 2:19:15So now there's two down.
- 2:19:17And here's Dan Ford.
- 2:19:30Dan Ford would fall into the same category as Larry Heisel, our hitter who will strike out.
- 2:19:38In fact, Dan Ford has struck out more than Larry Heisel.
- 2:19:44Cookie Rojas again to the mound visiting with Mark Littell.
- 2:19:48It is still tied 3-3, top of the eighth.
- 2:19:51The bases remain loaded.
- 2:20:04Dan Ford's right-hand batter takes it.
- 2:20:07Still in Black始us at the first base.
- 2:20:095ni fire.
- 2:20:11Heade of the draw.
- 2:20:12The catch is there.
- 2:20:13Dan Ford would fall into the same category as Willie Heichel, our hitter who will strike up.
- 2:20:23In fact, Dan Ford has struck out more than Willie Heichel.
- 2:20:29To be rowing off the gendarmes, visiting with Mark Liddell, it is still tied 3-3.
- 2:20:35At the top of the 8, the basers remain loaded.
- 2:20:49Dan Ford's right-hand batter digs in.
- 2:20:52Mark Liddell reading signs.
- 2:20:56The right-hander from Gettysburg, Missouri, ready a deal.
- 2:20:59Fires one-handed left, going one.
- 2:21:03Ford flies to deep right center in the second.
- 2:21:07He doubled in the fifth.
- 2:21:09He walked his score to run in the seventh inning.
- 2:21:15So a dangerous hitter at the plate, dangerous Dan.
- 2:21:20He wears a big label, handle with care.
- 2:21:23No ball, he'll strike.
- 2:21:25Liddell ready, here he comes.
- 2:21:27Mark Liddell, strike two, going two.
- 2:21:39Going two.
- 2:21:49Liddell bopping around.
- 2:21:54He's taking over his own two-pitch.
- 2:21:57And now climbs the hill.
- 2:22:05They've supported the idea.
- 2:22:07Dan Ford at the plate.
- 2:22:10No ball, two strikes.
- 2:22:14Wobbitt wig-wagging his way into the mound.
- 2:22:38Dan Liddell coming on to first, Wobb Wattiger in depth, and with the bases loaded and no margin for error,
- 2:22:47Iso grabbing into the fourth dot and Dan Ford out on strike.
- 2:22:53No run, no hit, three to ask.
- 2:22:57We go to the bottom of the eighth, five-three-three.
- 2:23:00Tom Johnson facing Brunson, LaTrey Mayberry, everybody better get on, Al Taler.
- 2:23:09That has several doubles in one.
- 2:23:13Royal Sri Lund's eight hits, the twins Sri Lund's nine hits.
- 2:23:18Bill Campbell, the right-hander, Tom Burkheim, the left-hander, working in the twin full-fins.
- 2:23:25Tom Johnson hits it to Brett.
- 2:23:30Outside, ball one, one and all.
- 2:23:38The magic number is one.
- 2:23:42A change of off the curve ball for a strike in the count one and one.
- 2:23:48As Royal's trying to win a division title in only their eighth year of competition in the American League,
- 2:23:55the one-one pitch.
- 2:23:57Fly back to the picture, make this bigger deal.
- 2:24:00Brett Wittos to open the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:24:03The winning one is first, nobody else.
- 2:24:16Well, Brett whistles one by the mound.
- 2:24:19Here's Al McCray.
- 2:24:22Al runs for three.
- 2:24:24He's downed it into a double play, bounce to third baseman, and hopped out to the second baseman.
- 2:24:36Johnson stepping off the rubber, Brett had a good way.
- 2:24:42He's looking for the front, he's going to get it, he's hopped up and oh, it's put it by Carell.
- 2:24:48And now everybody's getting it.
- 2:24:51Brett on his second base, and George had to stop.
- 2:24:56Everybody was chasing the ball at one time.
- 2:25:01And finally the twins found the handle and were able to get the ball to second base.
- 2:25:06So Rod Carell had the ball go by his right foot and then everybody started chasing it.
- 2:25:13And finally the twins, traveling, and they got the first out of second.
- 2:25:18And of course, they had to hold up.
- 2:25:20He thought that Rod Carell was going to catch the ball.
- 2:25:25So when it fell, there was still time to pick up the ball and get the first to second.
- 2:25:32One away and it's John Mamary.
- 2:25:36John is all for three.
- 2:25:46Out comes Minnesota managers Dean Walsh.
- 2:25:50We look at Tom Brugmeier in the bullpen, also Bill Campbell.
- 2:25:56And they're going to go to the left handers.
- 2:25:58So Tom Brugmeier, a former royal, will come into the ball game,
- 2:26:02a missing change being made in the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:26:05The score remains, Royals three and the Twins three.
- 2:26:09Here we go, John Mamary against Tom Brugmeier, left hander against left hander.
- 2:26:15Collins would be next and Bill Campbell continues to throw in the Minnesota bullpen.
- 2:26:20McCray is first and the fifth, going outside to John one and all.
- 2:26:32Well, John Brugmeier is 57th of third.
- 2:26:35He has eight wins.
- 2:26:36There goes the runner, Mamary hits with his center field and he's deep.
- 2:26:39That goes Roy, way back in the warning track where he makes the guess.
- 2:26:44McCray has half a second.
- 2:26:46He has to re-pag on his way back to first.
- 2:26:49So Mamary sends Ry to the 410 line in the deeper center field.
- 2:26:55Two away will follow for station identification.
- 2:26:59This is the American Forces radio and television service.
- 2:27:26Benny Matthews and Fred White back in Royals Stadium.
- 2:27:29It's 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:27:32Royals have Hal McCray and Burns with two out and Bill Campbell,
- 2:27:38one of the best relief hitters in all of baseball this year coming in.
- 2:27:43Campbell has 16 wins, 19 saves.
- 2:27:48He's yielded 144 hits in 165 innings.
- 2:27:53You might remember a ball game in Minnesota a few weeks ago.
- 2:27:58Campbell starting the ninth inning and the twins leading by two.
- 2:28:03And Minnesota's at a three-run home run and the Royals won the ball game on that Saturday afternoon.
- 2:28:11So the same Bill Campbell about to face Al Talon.
- 2:28:18Fred, another big night for George Brecht.
- 2:28:21Benny put together his 28th game of the season with his three or more hits.
- 2:28:26This time he's had three or more hits in the game against the Minnesota Tries.
- 2:28:31George had 27 hits against his long club now this year.
- 2:28:35So George Brecht certainly rising to the occasion here tonight,
- 2:28:39giving the Royals the opportunity to take the lead here in the eighth.
- 2:28:42He got it started with a single.
- 2:28:45He's had a defense tremendous all year long, 28 times now with three or more hits in the game.
- 2:28:52So George with three hits tonight now has 212 hits.
- 2:29:01And he has inserted himself back here to the top of the American League bag race.
- 2:29:07Al McCray went in as the American League leader, but now it is 9-4-4.
- 2:29:14The big run is three out of three.
- 2:29:17Norman Bobcock, 10-3-3 and the season is over for Bobcock.
- 2:29:21He will be sent back to Minnesota as he tore a ligaments in his thumb trying to catch the ball hit by Tommy Volkan at the fifth inning.
- 2:29:31Rod Carew, two out of four, so he's certainly has set his name in the house.
- 2:29:38Bill Campbell, set the face of Al Talon.
- 2:29:42He has two hits tonight and infield hit in the seventh.
- 2:29:44He came around the score. He's singled in the fifth.
- 2:29:48Retired his first time up on a comeback here to the mound.
- 2:29:51Ball breaking ball for a strike or one.
- 2:29:54So Campbell quickly establishes the advantage.
- 2:29:57No ball, one strike.
- 2:29:59Al McCray is third, two out.
- 2:30:02Red open the inning with a single to center.
- 2:30:06McCray a good lead.
- 2:30:08Too big to too Campbell, he steps back off the rubber.
- 2:30:15Now a 21-score basis.
- 2:30:20But only one since the All-Star game because of the bad leg.
- 2:30:23He draws the throw and it's back.
- 2:30:31Inside, 3-3.
- 2:30:33Royal batting in the bottom of the eighth inning.
- 2:30:37Here's the stretch by Campbell. McCray big lead.
- 2:30:41There he goes.
- 2:30:43Small is the swing and a miss over a slow two.
- 2:30:45The ball is rolling away but not far enough to allow McCray to go to third.
- 2:30:50Al McCray with a tap and hit for a slide as his 22nd throw of the day.
- 2:31:00Talon's going to hold that hole in two but he picked a perfect pitch.
- 2:31:04It was a slow breaking ball and all the catcher but Dwyer here to do was wait until he caught it.
- 2:31:12And it took a while because of the off-speed bit and the curve of that.
- 2:31:17Al McCray getting that little edge for that slow breaking ball right second base.
- 2:31:24And now a face hit from the Royals on top of the cat 0-2.
- 2:31:28Campbell running, here he comes.
- 2:31:31Rupert going right there. Here comes down four and he's got it.
- 2:31:36A one-handed catch by Ford and Fanny.
- 2:31:41No runs, one hit. A man left the board.
- 2:31:45We go to the light, the twins three and the Royals three.
- 2:31:51Earlier today Rick Pundy felt that his career high 32nd home run of the season.
- 2:31:57Joe Parnham celebrated his 26th and birthday by scattering eight hits over 8-1 third innings.
- 2:32:04To leave the Chicago Cubs to a 3-1 victory over the Montreal Expos.
- 2:32:09The Cubs scored a pair of runs in the first inning against Don Sandhouse on a walk,
- 2:32:14four spindles and a fourth out and Monday finished the score with a solo shot and a fourth.
- 2:32:20Parnham walked none and struck out five.
- 2:32:22He walked his shutout in the ninth inning on back-to-back doubles by Mike Jorgensen and Larry Parrish.
- 2:32:28Bruce Sutter came home to get the final two outs and attempt save of the season.
- 2:32:33Montreal's Jose Morales rounded out as an eighth inning ten-shitter to set a major league record
- 2:32:39for most ten-shitter appearances in a season with 82.
- 2:32:43He earlier had established eight major league records with 25 ten-shits.
- 2:32:50The National East Philadelphia Phillies return home today amid reports that the team is involved in
- 2:32:56internal disputes before 39th sector by a victory of St. Louis manager Danny Ogarkel,
- 2:33:03a 34-minute team meeting.
- 2:33:06Ninth inning is 5-3-3.
- 2:33:09The scoreboard totaled by Danical.
- 2:33:12The twins three runs, nine hits and no errors.
- 2:33:20The twins have stranded seven.
- 2:33:22The Royals with half-lift six to board.
- 2:33:28Mark Lachell getting ready to sit to Mike Covey.
- 2:33:34Mark did a magnificent job on the eighth.
- 2:33:37After the intentional lock to Wadiger, the bases loaded.
- 2:33:40Mike put the ice on a ground ball to force it to plate.
- 2:33:43And Dan Ford on strike.
- 2:33:47Covey doubled the drive in the three minutes of the run since last time up.
- 2:33:52And he takes the breaking ball inside, ball one, one and oh.
- 2:33:58Mike's double into the gap in right centers for Wadiger, Heichel and Ford.
- 2:34:05The twins on top three to two with the Royals tied the game with a run on the bottom of the seventh.
- 2:34:12By and outside, Walters, two and oh to Covey.
- 2:34:17Each team threatened in the eighth.
- 2:34:20Neither team scored.
- 2:34:22So here it is the night.
- 2:34:24And boy, the Royals taking their fans through a wringer tonight as they've done for the last month.
- 2:34:31The Covey's are on a low pitch, four oh three, three and oh.
- 2:34:43The Rock in danger of putting Covey to the board.
- 2:34:47Back he comes three oh and it's way on inside, ball four.
- 2:34:53So Covey's is on and John Wofford off to the mound.
- 2:34:56Bob Waldo coming up.
- 2:34:58Bob can handle the bat, he's a pretty good runner.
- 2:35:12That would be the second loss surrendered by Lattell, but the first one was an intentional loss.
- 2:35:22Bob Randall with the plays, Red and Wofford both going to the mound to talk to Mark Lattell.
- 2:35:38One on, nobody out.
- 2:35:39The Royals looking for a bunt.
- 2:35:41Randall around the bunt.
- 2:35:42Takes inside, ball one.
- 2:35:48Left hander Tom Hall, right hander Ken Sanders throwing in the Royals bullpen.
- 2:35:58Three to three top of the night, Covey's just burned.
- 2:36:02Lattell set it to belt, Randall around the bunt, gets it down and it's a good one.
- 2:36:06Mayberry's only play will be to tag Randall and he's got a knock through out of the base line.
- 2:36:11And Randall comes back for Mayberry.
- 2:36:16Bob is certainly no match for John.
- 2:36:20Bob was offended by George Press.
- 2:36:24And now McCrae grounded into a double play in the first.
- 2:36:28So it is a very physical game for Bob Randall.
- 2:36:34A sacrifice, three unassisted.
- 2:36:37And now Steve Rana, there Steve is overbored.
- 2:36:41Go ahead Randall strikes and takes him with jump one out and Rana slowly coming up.
- 2:36:49Mark Lattell is to belt.
- 2:36:52The fix of Rana outside putter is back one.
- 2:37:05And now the big thing, tied 3-3, 0-1 on Steve Rana, left hand batter.
- 2:37:11He is the twins' designated hitter.
- 2:37:13Lattell with backwards launch and second, here's the fix.
- 2:37:17Rana is half-noddled into the Royals dugout.
- 2:37:20So the United shoot Mark Lattell, no ball, two strikes.
- 2:37:30Rana is a good contact hitter.
- 2:37:34He's batted over 400 times officially.
- 2:37:39Steve has only struck out 42.
- 2:37:42So he'll make contact.
- 2:37:45Contact trying to bird dog from a 200-second out of 30 backing off his hotel bishops.
- 2:37:50Go outside, one ball, two strikes to Braun.
- 2:37:54Steve is giving in 60 runs.
- 2:38:05One and two to Braun.
- 2:38:09Trying to get him by John Lattell.
- 2:38:11Mark Lattell comes to center to belt.
- 2:38:14Backwards launch and second.
- 2:38:16One hit to John away.
- 2:38:18Hit into center field.
- 2:38:19It's going to be in for a base hit.
- 2:38:24Around third comes Cummings, a throw to the plate.
- 2:38:25Mountain tied, the runner to second.
- 2:38:27Trent running at him.
- 2:38:28George running right at the man.
- 2:38:30Now he takes the throw and he's out.
- 2:38:32He ran out of the baseline.
- 2:38:34But the twins get the lead run across.
- 2:38:37And the man who walked in scores.
- 2:38:40So Braun behind in the count, who's running the runner in front of Otis.
- 2:38:44Four to three, Minnesota.
- 2:38:54Two out bases empty, the batter Roy Swalley.
- 2:38:57He has single-quites, flying to left, grounded to third.
- 2:39:02So that's what the base run ball to the number eight hitter meant.
- 2:39:06A four to three Minnesota lead in the night.
- 2:39:09And he takes the strike going on.
- 2:39:19Back comes Lattell.
- 2:39:20Oh, one point of the strike.
- 2:39:22The wall to strike.
- 2:39:25Cummings has certainly been a factor.
- 2:39:27Three out of the eyes.
- 2:39:29And now he's scored the go-ahead run.
- 2:39:35And he's headed to the royal ninth.
- 2:39:39It'll be the lower third of the batting order.
- 2:39:41The ocean's edge.
- 2:39:43Strike called and that's the inning.
- 2:39:45But one great big run is thought to play.
- 2:39:48A walk, a sacrifice run, and a loop single.
- 2:39:52That's how easily it was done.
- 2:39:54One run, one hit.
- 2:39:57And nobody left.
- 2:39:58We go to the bottom of the ninth.
- 2:40:0012-4, Royals three.
- 2:40:03The Mormon All-Leagues are now in position to retire.
- 2:40:06A heavyweight marketing champion apparently has set the stage for George Foreman, Kenny Norton, and Bob to determine a new heavyweight change.
- 2:40:15The New York Yankees and the Cincinnati Reds are favorites among the Nevada oddsmakers to win their respective divisional titles and face off in the World Series.
- 2:40:26The Orioles' owner August Firtz, as he shot and disappointed over the planned levy to get the club by baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn, were cappeling with Oakland A's players.
- 2:40:37George Byrnes is gunning for his first tournament victory on the U.S. Pro Golf Tour after zipping to a one-stroke lead at the halfway mark in a Fajar Invitational Golf Tournament being played in Las Vegas.
- 2:40:52Taking a look at some of the final scores in the American League, Boston seven, Baltimore four, Texas League, Chicago nine, four after seven innings of play, and it was Detroit over Milwaukee five to nothing.
- 2:41:06And the Axe League, Chicago three, Montreal one, Philadelphia two, New York one, Cincinnati five, Atlanta two, and Houston over San Francisco five, four.
- 2:41:18And the game of the night, four to three Minnesota. Tommy Davis coming out the back. Tommy Davis will be hitting for John Waffin.
- 2:41:30Tommy Davis hitting 262 for the year on the three home runs, 26 RBI.
- 2:41:39And the offense, get Bill to follow Tommy Davis, and then Cookie Rojas, four to three, Minnesota on top, and Viro Cabell, the twins' best relief pitcher on the run.
- 2:41:57The right-hander ready and healed. Breaking ball, well not in Minnesota one. That was an off-beat breaking pitch.
- 2:42:05He throws well about every 50 to block actually. Fast ball, curve ball, changes off the curve, throws the screw ball.
- 2:42:13That is a breaking ball and a tap back to the pitcher. Over to first, ten time, one away.
- 2:42:25The project being called back, and here comes Jamie Clark. Jamie's having 239, one home run, 14 RBI.
- 2:42:51Jamie Clark out the back, four front projects.
- 2:43:05The angels did not score in the top half of the first against right of loose.
- 2:43:11The A's are now batting. Royals batting in the bottom of the ninth, trailing four to three. The twins got three in the seventh and one in the ninth.
- 2:43:23Royals two in the fifth, one in the bottom of the seventh to make it a three-three ball game. The twins went ahead, a walk up front, and a hooping single to center.
- 2:43:35Campbell pitches the clerk way outside ball one.
- 2:43:47The twins are playing Jamie Clark to pull the ball. He's playing the misses in the count one and one.
- 2:44:00The twins, four runs on ten is, the Royals three runs on nine is. One ball, one strike, bases that day one out. Campbell the clerk changes down into the second base of the randall.
- 2:44:14He's got it, only the first is two down. So it's all up to Sookie Roach to be single to center to tie the game. And the Royals now are down to their last out.
- 2:44:43Bill Campbell unleashes the pitch, a big sweeping curve outside ball one, one and oh.
- 2:44:56Roy's calling a good stop in the ball with short. Breaking ball inside ball two to Sookie. Tommy Fulcant with the net, four to three twins, five over nine.
- 2:45:13The twins trying to delay the Royals celebration. One shot, and it's in with the Royals. So the Royals are still alive. Rojas the clerk, two down, and it comes Louis Wilson to run for Rojas.
- 2:45:41And he's going to run, getting by the hands, and right to the goal.
- 2:45:47Willie Wilson with tremendous speed, Willie has two stolen bases to lose, two out of two.
- 2:45:57That won't help the catcher, but Wininger is sitting Willie Wilson face to face over the second base. Wininger, just a youngster, 20 years old, had all kinds of problems early in the season throwing out runners.
- 2:46:18Actually it wasn't all his fault. In most instances, a base runner, a base stealer will steal on the pitcher, not the catcher.
- 2:46:31It became a mental thing for Wininger, but he's throwing much better now. Tom Fulcant up there, Willie Wilson draws the throw and he's back.
- 2:46:41Tom Fulcant has fatal, simple walks. And the only time he was retired when he tried to better play on, Wilson away, draws the throw and he scammers back safely.
- 2:46:59five to the nine, one on two out of this. Off-steam breaking ball, strike on one, Campbell throwing that tantalizing, low curve ball, nothing in one.
- 2:47:14The head-steam is up and ten to eight, the tying run at first was two out, Wilson away, the threat, throw to forward, he took dig at that. You know, Willie may be going with a count of one.
- 2:47:29Tom Fulcant backing out of the batter's box for a quick look at third base coach Chuck Gillard. And now he's back in there.
- 2:47:37Willie Wilson away, the threat by Campbell, quick move to first to run it back. Campbell is quick out there.
- 2:47:49Bill trying to keep him close to get his catcher to the end. Left hand hitter waiting at the plate. There he goes, they pitch out, the throw to second base, out, all game is over. The twins have won it. They get strike, they pitch down with a count of one-one.
- 2:48:08And Willie Wilson trying to steal the touchdown. So the twins win it four to three and we'll be back right after this.
- 2:48:16Well, it appears as though the KZ Royals are going to have to wait to see the outcome of the game between the California Angels and the Oakland A's because they have, again, failed to clinch the Western Division title.
- 2:48:31Washington diplomats have a new general manager, John Carpere, who was formerly with the San Jose Earthquake. Diplomats President Steve Dantzanski said employing the 37-year-old Carpere is a close first step towards making the diplomats a first-class Major League operation.
- 2:48:51More than 15 applicants were interviewed for a job which came open last month when Keith Dizart resigned before joining the San Jose soccer team two years ago. Carpere was an executive with the Milwaukee Brewers.
- 2:49:08Liddy Sobe was a level-on rally to defeat Mark Record of Australia for the first time in her career, one-six-six-four-six-three on Friday to win the $50,000 Torrey-Swee-Luck-Satana Tournament. Right now let's get back to Kansas City for the wrap-up.
- 2:49:26Well, everybody was certainly primed to pull the clerk on the Royal Stadium. Minnesota Twins were able to jam it down into the bottle as they edge the Royals four to three.
- 2:49:39And all it took was a walk, a bump, and a loopy single to disappoint over 40,000 that were here in the ballpark, paying attendance for 38,482. And certainly to the disappointment of all those and the Royals.
- 2:49:59The Twins have edged the Royals and have beaten the Royals for only the second time here at the Royals Stadium this year. The Royals took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth.
- 2:50:12The Twins came back on a three-run double by Mike Tepes in the seventh inning, to lead by one. The Royals quickly tied it in the bottom of the seventh. Tootsie Rojas rounding a single in the center.
- 2:50:30And scored on drawn, loopy, single to center. And that's how the Twins delayed the Royals' celebration by one night at least. So certainly a very disappointing ballgame. But it really was, Jenny.
- 2:50:43You had the feeling all night long that the Royals were going to keep away somehow.
- 2:50:47A lot of the defenders out here tonight are doing the empty ballpark one of the time labels. There are no days when that thing is on hold. We'll come back to haunt you. It happened here tonight.
- 2:51:00The Royals got a two-round single from Tootsie Rojas. They were still alive. But they couldn't get it done.
- 2:51:05All you can do is come back out tomorrow, fly them again. It was also that possibility that Frank Sinatra, the angel, won't have a fight of all of the other day. He's not in Oakland, California tonight.
- 2:51:18That's before the ballgame. The Royals don't want it that way. They just included it with themselves. They just say, yeah, tomorrow.
