- 0:16Speaker 1: Welcome into Jags AM. I'm Kanani Stevens, Brian Sexton, John
- 0:19Speaker 1: Ogier with me today. A little later than normal as
- 0:21Speaker 1: the team gets back from their week two matchup in Denver.
- 0:24Speaker 1: We're going to talk things over after a pretty good start.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Things didn't finish as well as the team would have liked.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Let's go through our big things brought to you by GEHA,
- 0:32Speaker 1: Government Employees Health Association. And big thing number one is
- 0:36Speaker 1: that second half swing. The Jags had a lead early
- 0:38Speaker 1: in this one, but couldn't quite get things done.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Played complimentary enough in the first half. And that was
- 0:46Speaker 2: what was disappointing was the complementary football, specifically in the
- 0:50Speaker 2: second half. And as we really went into the fourth
- 0:53Speaker 2: quarter was when you needed a drive, right? You needed
- 0:57Speaker 2: a stop. You needed a catch. You needed a play.
- 1:00Speaker 2: We just, you know, didn't do it, right? We just
- 1:03Speaker 2: didn't make it. We got to go watch and see
- 1:06Speaker 2: how can we put these guys in a better position
- 1:08Speaker 2: to be successful. And we got to make some more plays.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Got to make plays to win the game, Brian. It
- 1:14Speaker 1: really did feel like you were waiting for somebody to
- 1:16Speaker 1: do something, and it just didn't quite come together.
- 1:18Speaker 3: Well, listen, the Jags had their opportunity, right? The Broncos
- 1:21Speaker 3: came into the game with their backs against the wall
- 1:23Speaker 3: with their fans. They were upset with the Monday night
- 1:25Speaker 3: showing in Kansas City. It was the home opener, and
- 1:28Speaker 3: the Jaguars gave them an opportunity to stand up on
- 1:30Speaker 3: that first drive of the third quarter. You had a
- 1:32Speaker 3: chance to go up by two touchdowns. You have it
- 1:34Speaker 3: first and goal at the three-yard line. You go backwards.
- 1:38Speaker 3: And the run game fell apart. It let them down
- 1:40Speaker 3: in those two plays there. So what you did by
- 1:43Speaker 3: failing to convert there and make it a 17-3 game
- 1:46Speaker 3: was you let the Broncos, with their back against the wall,
- 1:50Speaker 3: come out swinging. And obviously they scored in the next
- 1:53Speaker 3: three drives and won it. It sounds simplistic, John, to
- 1:56Speaker 3: say that that was the moment the game changed. But
- 1:57Speaker 3: I'm telling you, from my perspective, and to hear the
- 2:00Speaker 3: coach in the postgame talk about what they missed in
- 2:03Speaker 3: that moment gave the Broncos an opportunity. They took it
- 2:06Speaker 3: while you missed it. Yeah, he said afterward that he
- 2:09Speaker 3: was going to go.
- 2:11Speaker 4: If LaQuinn Allen had caught the pass to get them
- 2:13Speaker 4: to the one on fourth and one, he was going
- 2:15Speaker 4: to go, which isn't surprising if you know Liam's makeup.
- 2:18Speaker 4: I wrote and thought after the game that it was
- 2:21Speaker 4: one of the tougher games to analyze that I've been
- 2:23Speaker 4: around in a while because it wasn't like the Jaguars
- 2:26Speaker 4: played that much different in the second half than the first.
- 2:29Speaker 4: They kind of played clunky in the first half, and
- 2:32Speaker 4: a veteran team thing kind of got that lead. And
- 2:36Speaker 4: then they sort of didn't do some of the moment
- 2:39Speaker 4: things to hang on to it. And if they had won,
- 2:42Speaker 4: which they could have, I'm not sure they'd feel that
- 2:44Speaker 4: much better about it. There's some stuff that they've got
- 2:48Speaker 4: to do better against really good teams to get where
- 2:50Speaker 4: they want to go.
- 2:50Speaker 3: But it's only week two.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Our second big thing, which is explosive. There were a
- 2:56Speaker 1: ton of explosive plays, no matter how we quantify that, John,
- 2:59Speaker 1: in terms of yardage. Denver had a ton of them,
- 3:02Speaker 1: and that felt like the difference. Early on, they had
- 3:04Speaker 1: a bunch in the same drive, were able to get
- 3:06Speaker 1: an interception to kind of negate it, but it really
- 3:09Speaker 1: bit them in the second half, letting up those big plays.
- 3:11Speaker 4: Yeah, it felt like, as Brian said, it felt like
- 3:16Speaker 4: the game was starting to get away or go in
- 3:18Speaker 4: the Broncos' favor maybe midway through the second quarter.
- 3:21Speaker 3: I know that the Jaguars' defense.
- 3:23Speaker 4: did what championship teams do in those situations, kept them out. Hey,
- 3:28Speaker 4: you're playing okay, but we've stopped you, so now we
- 3:32Speaker 4: have the edge. And then in the second half, it
- 3:34Speaker 4: just kept coming and coming. Liam said after the game,
- 3:36Speaker 4: they got to rush the passer better. That means bringing players.
- 3:40Speaker 4: Broncos have a good offensive line, all that. But it's
- 3:45Speaker 4: really hard to win on the road against a playoff team.
- 3:48Speaker 4: when your quarterback's getting hit a lot and their quarterback's not.
- 3:52Speaker 3: And that was sort of the story, Brian. Well, and
- 3:54Speaker 3: go back to Bo Nix, right? He didn't play well
- 3:55Speaker 3: on Monday Night Football and came in wanting to prove something.
- 3:59Speaker 3: And the coaching staff in Denver was saying, just hold on,
- 4:01Speaker 3: you know, let's let this thing play out. And of course,
- 4:03Speaker 3: they found a way to make him comfortable. And he
- 4:07Speaker 3: completed almost 65 percent of his passes. It didn't matter
- 4:10Speaker 3: whether the Jaguars brought four or five. The Broncos had
- 4:13Speaker 3: a solution. The Jaguars couldn't finish against Bo Nix. And
- 4:17Speaker 3: it's tough to hold up against a guy like Jaden Waddle.
- 4:19Speaker 3: They've got Courtland Sutton, who's an excellent target for them
- 4:22Speaker 3: as well. When you can't affect the quarterback and you
- 4:26Speaker 3: don't do as good a job keeping your quarterback from pressure,
- 4:30Speaker 3: you're not going to win on Sunday. And the Jaguars
- 4:32Speaker 3: really struggled with Bo Nix.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Our final big thing today, which is old habits. We
- 4:35Speaker 1: told you some of the issues that we witnessed, but
- 4:38Speaker 1: also Trevor Lawrence, who looked as confident and collected as
- 4:41Speaker 1: we've seen him the back half of last season and
- 4:43Speaker 1: in week one, looked a bit rushed. A lot of
- 4:46Speaker 1: that coming from the offensive line play, but he said
- 4:49Speaker 1: he felt like it wasn't necessarily what the Broncos were doing.
- 4:52Speaker 1: It was him not playing his best.
- 4:55Speaker 5: As far as what they did, it wasn't anything that
- 4:57Speaker 5: surprised us. I thought they played really good up front.
- 5:01Speaker 5: They got after us a little bit, and I thought
- 5:03Speaker 5: we played on our heels a little bit and we
- 5:06Speaker 5: need to be a little bit better to start the
- 5:08Speaker 5: game and find some completions and finding some momentum early.
- 5:13Speaker 5: I felt like they kind of got after us early
- 5:15Speaker 5: and we had to settle in a little bit later
- 5:16Speaker 5: than we wanted to.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Brian, Trevor never shies away from taking ownership, obviously, but
- 5:22Speaker 1: a tough environment felt like it really got to him. Obviously,
- 5:25Speaker 1: he was rushed all day. The offensive line was having
- 5:27Speaker 1: a tough day in terms of pass protection, but it
- 5:31Speaker 1: was weird to see Trevor regress a little bit because
- 5:32Speaker 1: he looked so confident lately in this offense.
- 5:34Speaker 3: He did, and it felt like the last nine games
- 5:36Speaker 3: that he understood exactly where everyone was, and yet there
- 5:40Speaker 3: were some moments where Brenton Strange was open and he
- 5:42Speaker 3: didn't throw him the ball. There were some moments where
- 5:46Speaker 3: it felt like he just wasn't seeing it. Part of
- 5:48Speaker 3: that's obviously the pressure that he was feeling from Denver.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Part of that is obviously the crowd noise and trying
- 5:53Speaker 3: to get everyone settled down and to be able to
- 5:55Speaker 3: make a good read, not let your heart rate get
- 5:57Speaker 3: so high that you're moving so fast, which doesn't normally
- 6:00Speaker 3: appear to be a problem for him. But it just
- 6:02Speaker 3: felt out of sync yesterday, John. You talked about how
- 6:04Speaker 3: it was a weird game to analyze in the second half.
- 6:07Speaker 3: Jaguars missed some opportunities. The quarterback didn't play his best football.
- 6:11Speaker 3: If you win, you feel better about it, but you're
- 6:13Speaker 3: still coming back with the idea, we've got work to do.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:16Speaker 4: I haven't seen very many quarterbacks who play well when
- 6:20Speaker 4: they're under pressure and getting hit all the time.
- 6:21Speaker 3: I covered Peyton Manning for 10 years.
- 6:23Speaker 4: He had some awful games where he was getting pressure
- 6:26Speaker 4: from the interior against this team. So I didn't think
- 6:32Speaker 4: on the scale of horrific quarterback games that Trevor was awful.
- 6:36Speaker 3: I thought he had one really bad pass, and that
- 6:39Speaker 3: swayed the game.
- 6:40Speaker 4: I also kind of understand in that moment, why he
- 6:43Speaker 4: felt with all the pressure he was getting, why he
- 6:45Speaker 4: thought he had.
- 6:45Speaker 3: To force one.
- 6:46Speaker 4: So bad game overall, but I don't think that erases
- 6:52Speaker 4: the progress he's made, and I don't think his floor
- 6:56Speaker 4: has dropped very far.
- 6:57Speaker 3: Kai, Drake May, who we'll see this week, threw three
- 7:00Speaker 3: interceptions on opening day and came back yesterday and was
- 7:04Speaker 3: not perfect, but was much, much better. Good quarterbacks have
- 7:07Speaker 3: days like that.
- 7:08Speaker 1: A lot to analyze, and we will look at the
- 7:10Speaker 1: tape when we come back here on Jags AM this morning.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Those are all critical plays, you know, I mean, when
- 7:27Speaker 2: you're struggling specifically to create and make a play, we
- 7:33Speaker 2: need some, you know, some of our guys to step
- 7:35Speaker 2: up and I got to be better in terms of
- 7:36Speaker 2: putting them in a better position to be successful as well.
- 7:40Speaker 2: It just felt like we were a little off sync
- 7:42Speaker 2: in this, you know, a little out of sync in
- 7:43Speaker 2: the second half in terms of like just the ball
- 7:46Speaker 2: getting on, you know, maybe it was on the outcut,
- 7:49Speaker 2: like where it's on them a little quick or we
- 7:50Speaker 2: didn't see it, whatever it is. Um, so maybe some
- 7:54Speaker 2: of the rush was getting to us and the ball
- 7:55Speaker 2: is having to come out a little bit earlier and, uh,
- 7:58Speaker 2: we just weren't in sync, uh, enough, especially in the
- 8:01Speaker 2: second half.
- 8:03Speaker 1: So it wasn't quite right out at mile high. And
- 8:06Speaker 1: we're going to look at some of the video cause
- 8:07Speaker 1: it started. Okay. They were battling through some of the issues,
- 8:10Speaker 1: but then it fell apart a little bit in the
- 8:12Speaker 1: second half. So we'll start out early on when they
- 8:15Speaker 1: got that touchdown and we're able to also connect and
- 8:18Speaker 1: get Parker involved because obviously This offense really needs to
- 8:22Speaker 1: work through Parker Washington. He's so dynamic, and he's always
- 8:24Speaker 1: able to make a play down to the one-yard line.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Basial Tootin punches it in from there. Brian, it felt like, yeah,
- 8:30Speaker 1: it wasn't quite working, but they were still finding a
- 8:32Speaker 1: way to make plays.
- 8:33Speaker 3: They were, and you mentioned Parker. I mean, he is
- 8:35Speaker 3: a guy. The offense runs through him and Basial Tootin
- 8:38Speaker 3: right now. Those are the two most productive players on offense,
- 8:41Speaker 3: and those are the two players the defense is going
- 8:42Speaker 3: to try and take away. In first and goal, you
- 8:45Speaker 3: can't do it. Basial's going to find a way to score.
- 8:48Speaker 3: They've got to find some diversification along that offense and
- 8:52Speaker 3: get some other guys involved.
- 8:53Speaker 1: It can be tough early.
- 8:55Speaker 4: They have changed some things offensively, meaning trying to get
- 8:59Speaker 4: more 12 and 13 personnel going. They are still in
- 9:03Speaker 4: the process of figuring some things out with the offensive line,
- 9:08Speaker 4: run blocking. I thought early that They were doing things,
- 9:14Speaker 4: like I said, that professional teams figure out a way
- 9:18Speaker 4: to get up when they're not playing well, get some
- 9:21Speaker 4: scoreboard advantage, and then they sort of maintain it. And
- 9:25Speaker 4: I think against most teams in the NFL yesterday, that
- 9:27Speaker 4: would have worked. But the Broncos, remember, only lost three
- 9:30Speaker 4: times last year. So you're playing a good team that
- 9:32Speaker 4: can withstand it at home, and it bit them. I've
- 9:35Speaker 4: seen plenty of really good teams have clunker games, and
- 9:39Speaker 4: a lot of times they win it. I did think
- 9:41Speaker 4: it was good for the Jaguars that In a clunker game,
- 9:45Speaker 4: you still can look at it and say, yeah, we
- 9:48Speaker 4: should have, a couple of plays, we could have gotten it.
- 9:51Speaker 4: I think they'll figure out these loose ends and iron them.
- 9:55Speaker 4: I think this will wind up being week two weirdness.
- 9:58Speaker 4: We talked about week one weirdness.
- 9:59Speaker 1: Right.
- 10:00Speaker 4: It that can linger a little bit i feel like
- 10:02Speaker 4: that's what yesterday.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Was Now we're going to look at, I love a
- 10:06Speaker 1: goal line stand, so I was going to include this
- 10:07Speaker 1: whether or not they won this football game, but obviously
- 10:09Speaker 1: gave up one of those explosive plays, get down to
- 10:11Speaker 1: the one, but then stood them up. And I'll give
- 10:14Speaker 1: some critique here in terms of I don't think the
- 10:16Speaker 1: pass rush got home in this game, but they did
- 10:18Speaker 1: stop the run well, and they stopped it when they
- 10:19Speaker 1: needed to in plays like this.
- 10:21Speaker 3: Devon Hamilton had a whale of a game. I mean,
- 10:23Speaker 3: he really played good football. Again, if you just look
- 10:26Speaker 3: at the stat sheet, you may not be impressed because
- 10:29Speaker 3: you can't see him. He's so engulfed, John, by orange
- 10:32Speaker 3: jerseys for most of this ballgame. But he really was
- 10:35Speaker 3: a dominant force inside yesterday.
- 10:36Speaker 4: Well, I think if you asked Liam and the people
- 10:40Speaker 4: who sort of put a game plan together, you would
- 10:43Speaker 4: say if you play as well defensively as you did for, what,
- 10:48Speaker 4: the first two and a half quarters against the Broncos–
- 10:51Speaker 4: A motivated team at home. You figure you're going to
- 10:54Speaker 4: get some punches from them. They held them to three
- 10:56Speaker 4: for the first two and a half quarters. I think
- 10:59Speaker 4: Liam would have told you, we're going to have a lead, guys.
- 11:01Speaker 4: And that's going to be enough to have big scoreboard advantage.
- 11:04Speaker 4: And I think the offense couldn't quite deliver the punch
- 11:08Speaker 4: they needed to make that defensive effort give them the
- 11:11Speaker 4: advantage late in the game they needed.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Jordan Lewis had an interception, but again, another drive where
- 11:17Speaker 1: they had three huge chunk plays right before that, and
- 11:19Speaker 1: this was almost a bit of a bailout, because things
- 11:23Speaker 1: could have gotten away earlier, I think, here if they'd
- 11:25Speaker 1: gone in and scored, but this was able to bail
- 11:27Speaker 1: them out. They've been doing a lot of switching with
- 11:29Speaker 1: the cornerbacks, John. I don't have the exact snap counts
- 11:32Speaker 1: this morning, but it seems like it's rotating a lot.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Is that a good thing for this defense? Is that
- 11:37Speaker 1: by design?
- 11:38Speaker 4: I assume it's by design. I don't... I have to
- 11:43Speaker 4: kind of plead ignorance. I don't necessarily know the motivation
- 11:47Speaker 4: behind this. They have talked about being versatile in the
- 11:50Speaker 4: back end. If it had worked, we'd be praising it.
- 11:55Speaker 4: There were big plays allowed on Sunday, but I have
- 11:59Speaker 4: not broken it down to figure out, was it pass rush?
- 12:05Speaker 4: So again, it's a legitimate question. It's going to be
- 12:07Speaker 4: a topic this week.
- 12:08Speaker 3: Listen, this was one of the moments where I thought, OK,
- 12:10Speaker 3: the Jaguars are not playing their best football today, but
- 12:12Speaker 3: they're going to find a way. They're a good enough team.
- 12:14Speaker 3: They're going to find a way to win because they
- 12:16Speaker 3: take the ball away. Back-to-back drives for the Broncos into
- 12:20Speaker 3: the red zone, and they come away with just three points.
- 12:22Speaker 3: And then, better yet, Trevor is facing first and 20
- 12:25Speaker 3: at his own 10. The crowd is at a fever pitch.
- 12:28Speaker 3: They're getting pressure. He goes six for six, and they
- 12:31Speaker 3: get a field goal there. And you're like, OK, there's
- 12:33Speaker 3: a chance to find a way to win. But you
- 12:37Speaker 3: did notice those explosive plays continued from the second quarter
- 12:40Speaker 3: into the third quarter, and it really cost them. But
- 12:44Speaker 3: this was the moment where you're like, okay, Jaguars are
- 12:47Speaker 3: a good team. They're going to find a way to
- 12:48Speaker 3: eke out a win here. They couldn't sustain it.
- 12:50Speaker 4: I'm sorry, Brian. I thought for two and a half quarters, Kai,
- 12:53Speaker 4: you'll relate to this. I thought this was vintage dynasty Patriots.
- 12:57Speaker 4: Find a way. You're up 13-3, and you're watching it going, gosh,
- 13:00Speaker 4: how are they up 13-3? And they missed a couple– Again,
- 13:05Speaker 4: a 13, we'll hit it later probably, but you're tied 13-13.
- 13:09Speaker 4: You have a drop by BTJ that sacks momentum. In
- 13:13Speaker 4: the NFL, those big plays, those moments are what matters,
- 13:17Speaker 4: and the Jaguars didn't make them in the last, what,
- 13:19Speaker 4: 22 minutes of the game.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Yeah. It can also hurt you when you come out
- 13:21Speaker 1: from the half, Jaguars have the football, drive all the
- 13:23Speaker 1: way down, you get a field goal. I think sometimes
- 13:25Speaker 1: when you don't get touchdowns in scenarios like that and
- 13:28Speaker 1: add that gap and give yourself that pressure you can
- 13:31Speaker 1: put on them, you're down two scores, you've got to push,
- 13:34Speaker 1: that hurt them as well.
- 13:35Speaker 3: Well, and it didn't hurt the Broncos. If you go
- 13:36Speaker 3: back and watch, you'll see Alex Singleton, the linebacker, standing
- 13:39Speaker 3: in the back of the end zone when they stop
- 13:41Speaker 3: him on third down with his arms raised like they
- 13:44Speaker 3: just won. And that was such an emotional swing for
- 13:47Speaker 3: both teams. Even though the Jaguars went up 10, it
- 13:49Speaker 3: was a two-score game. The Broncos grabbed a lot of
- 13:52Speaker 3: juice out of that, and they were able to take
- 13:54Speaker 3: that juice forward, and the Jaguars lost some juice, and
- 13:57Speaker 3: they couldn't rediscover it.
- 13:59Speaker 4: The way the league works now, I think if they
- 14:00Speaker 4: score there, 17-3, the Broncos are on the sidelines going,
- 14:06Speaker 4: looking at the Jaguars' sidelines saying, this team's not even
- 14:08Speaker 4: playing well, and they're up 14. I think you would
- 14:11Speaker 4: have had some frustration, and I think the game probably
- 14:14Speaker 4: goes another way. but it didn't.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Trevor Preston a little bit had his one interception on
- 14:19Speaker 1: the day first so far of the season, and it
- 14:22Speaker 1: felt like, I mean, when your receivers are well covered,
- 14:25Speaker 1: he's trying to force some things. Certainly there was a
- 14:27Speaker 1: couple different throws, maybe a few to BTJ as well, drops,
- 14:31Speaker 1: and then also contested balls that you'd like to have back.
- 14:35Speaker 1: They're a great defensive team. I'm not going to knock
- 14:37Speaker 1: on them. I mean, Parker Washington said himself they're professionals
- 14:40Speaker 1: as well, but this one was tough, and it felt
- 14:42Speaker 1: like At least with Trevor, I don't think he played badly.
- 14:45Speaker 1: It's just like it felt like he was taking that
- 14:46Speaker 1: extra second, and maybe it was similar to the beginning
- 14:49Speaker 1: of last season when he was learning this offense where
- 14:52Speaker 1: maybe he let it throw. He held it a little
- 14:55Speaker 1: bit longer just trying to see, as opposed to last
- 14:58Speaker 1: week we saw him throwing with abandon. Hey, my guy's
- 15:00Speaker 1: going to be there. It'll be fine. This week he
- 15:02Speaker 1: was kind of waiting a.
- 15:03Speaker 3: Little bit longer. Hard to blame him. He didn't have
- 15:04Speaker 3: many times to have an extra second.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Also true.
- 15:07Speaker 3: Rodney Moss is the most targeted cornerback in football, in part,
- 15:11Speaker 3: because Pat Sertan is on the other side. But he
- 15:14Speaker 3: stays in that Broncos defense, which is very, very good
- 15:18Speaker 3: for a reason. He's a playmaker, and he turns and
- 15:20Speaker 3: he just made a play. And you heard the coach
- 15:22Speaker 3: say the Jaguars didn't make enough plays. The Broncos made
- 15:24Speaker 3: four or five big plays yesterday, and in a game
- 15:27Speaker 3: where one or two plays can swing the outcome, four
- 15:30Speaker 3: or five means you're not going to find a way
- 15:32Speaker 3: to win.
- 15:32Speaker 4: You know in that situation, if you're Trevor, you've felt
- 15:35Speaker 4: it all day that you're not going to have a
- 15:37Speaker 4: lot of time. You're probably not going to have a.
- 15:39Speaker 1: Lot of opportunities. You've got your go-to guy.
- 15:43Speaker 4: And how many times in this league do we praise
- 15:45Speaker 4: a quarterback for saying, hey, throw it up to your
- 15:47Speaker 4: best receiver, let him make a play? So I think
- 15:48Speaker 4: there was an element of that. It was a bad pass.
- 15:52Speaker 4: He wants it back, et cetera. But he also wasn't
- 15:57Speaker 4: thrown to his fourth guy. He threw to the main guy.
- 15:59Speaker 3: We did it last week. We praised him for throwing
- 16:01Speaker 3: into tight coverage. He saw the throw. He made the throw.
- 16:04Speaker 3: This week it didn't work.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Broncos scored a touchdown after that. We'll skip ahead. And
- 16:08Speaker 1: this is when it kind of started falling apart. A
- 16:10Speaker 1: couple things back to back, right? So a ball to
- 16:12Speaker 1: beat to Jay. He wasn't able to come down with.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Then another throw from Trevor Lawrence. This is a little
- 16:17Speaker 1: sequence here. And then we get to the field goal
- 16:20Speaker 1: try at the end. So this is one you think
- 16:22Speaker 1: there's a couple where you're like, hey, probably should come
- 16:25Speaker 1: down with that. I know he's mid-turn, but, you know,
- 16:27Speaker 1: we know Brian Thomas is very capable of coming down
- 16:30Speaker 1: with a ball like that. You want to see him
- 16:31Speaker 1: catch that. And, you know, this is where the one
- 16:33Speaker 1: where I'm like maybe he's kind of pump faking a
- 16:36Speaker 1: little bit before he gets it to Parker Washington. Then
- 16:38Speaker 1: it leads to Kim Little, who we praise for having,
- 16:41Speaker 1: you know, the leg to kick from very far distance,
- 16:43Speaker 1: but in important, crucial games, missing some of these important kicks.
- 16:47Speaker 1: So this is a moment where when you hear Liam
- 16:49Speaker 1: Cohen earlier on saying, hey, we needed to make a play,
- 16:53Speaker 1: a catch, a kick, whatever it may be, this is
- 16:55Speaker 1: when it felt like the dominoes were falling the other way.
- 16:58Speaker 4: I'll bet, and again, I haven't talked to Liam specifically
- 17:00Speaker 4: about this, I'll bet there he would say, look, it'd
- 17:04Speaker 4: been great to hit the field goal, And it was big.
- 17:06Speaker 4: But in that situation, the Broncos have tied. It's 17,
- 17:09Speaker 4: or was it 13-13. And the way the NFL is now,
- 17:16Speaker 4: when they lined up for the field goal, I was thinking, okay,
- 17:18Speaker 4: this is great. But it felt like the Broncos had momentum,
- 17:21Speaker 4: and you needed more than a field goal right there.
- 17:23Speaker 4: I love B.J.J. He's got to catch that ball on
- 17:27Speaker 4: the left. They are crying for momentum the entire second half.
- 17:34Speaker 4: On third, I think it was third and 10, you
- 17:36Speaker 4: hit Jacoby for 28. Beautiful route, beautiful throw, and then
- 17:40Speaker 4: all of a sudden, the.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Air goes out.
- 17:45Speaker 4: It's not fair to say it cost them the game,
- 17:47Speaker 4: but it cost them momentum at that point. If they
- 17:49Speaker 4: go in and score 24, 20, you know, 20, 13,
- 17:50Speaker 4: you got to catch the ball.
- 17:53Speaker 3: I'm going to hold on my hot take because it's
- 17:54Speaker 3: about that.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Going back the other way, Broncos end up scoring on
- 17:59Speaker 1: this drive, but a big penalty on Travis Hunter, who
- 18:02Speaker 1: did not play much on offense at all, and then
- 18:04Speaker 1: was rotating in on defense. And Liam had some choice
- 18:07Speaker 1: words to the officials, so that added on a couple
- 18:09Speaker 1: extra yards in this as well. And, you know, there's discourse.
- 18:13Speaker 1: It was clearly a penalty, in my opinion, on this play.
- 18:15Speaker 1: And at this point, I'm not bailing out the secondary.
- 18:20Speaker 1: If you want to say it wasn't, it's you're not
- 18:23Speaker 1: going to get that call every single time. And when
- 18:25Speaker 1: you make it look a certain way, receivers know how
- 18:27Speaker 1: to sell it. So that's a flag there. And I
- 18:30Speaker 1: felt like this was where the secondary, they had given
- 18:35Speaker 1: up explosives before this, but it really fell apart at
- 18:38Speaker 1: that point.
- 18:39Speaker 4: In this day and age, it's a penalty. I can
- 18:42Speaker 4: go on and on about this. Anybody who listens, like, John,
- 18:45Speaker 4: I don't want to talk about this anymore. Every time
- 18:49Speaker 4: there's any contact down the field now, you're looking for yellow.
- 18:53Speaker 4: The league calls this way too much. They don't let
- 18:55Speaker 4: him play. I'd feel that way if it was the
- 18:56Speaker 4: other way around. Maybe that was interference. At some point,
- 19:03Speaker 4: you've got to be able to.
- 19:04Speaker 3: Play defense in the NFL. Whether it was or it wasn't, John,
- 19:06Speaker 3: you felt like the flag was coming for that because
- 19:09Speaker 3: we've become so accustomed to seeing that, right? He had
- 19:11Speaker 3: really good coverage. He was running step for step. His
- 19:14Speaker 3: arms were up. They used to call it face guarding,
- 19:17Speaker 3: I think. I haven't heard that term in a long time.
- 19:20Speaker 3: but an official is looking at a penalty in the end.
- 19:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:22Speaker 3: Right.
- 19:23Speaker 1: Right.
- 19:23Speaker 3: The, the, the, the officials looking at that saying, well,
- 19:25Speaker 3: there's no way that he can play that way. It's
- 19:27Speaker 3: kind of like the, the fourth down in 18 in
- 19:29Speaker 3: Cincinnati in week two last year, he was a great
- 19:32Speaker 3: like that.
- 19:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:33Speaker 3: He made a great play on the ball, but the
- 19:35Speaker 3: official thought, well, there's no way this guy can be
- 19:37Speaker 3: in that sort of coverage and knock that ball away.
- 19:39Speaker 3: Same thing yesterday. You're going to get the flag. I
- 19:41Speaker 3: was waiting for the flag.
- 19:44Speaker 4: It's become almost like, well, if, both players have possession
- 19:51Speaker 4: of the ball, the possession goes to the offense. It's
- 19:54Speaker 4: almost become like, well, if you think it's close, just
- 19:56Speaker 4: throw the flag. That's what it feels like in the
- 19:58Speaker 4: last four or five years to me. And get off
- 20:01Speaker 4: my lawn.
- 20:03Speaker 1: That led to the Broncos touchdown. They go ahead and
- 20:05Speaker 1: then Jaguars weren't able to put much together after that,
- 20:09Speaker 1: and it didn't feel like they were going to be,
- 20:11Speaker 1: I'll speak from watching it, it didn't feel like they
- 20:13Speaker 1: were going to be able to put anything together.
- 20:15Speaker 4: I think that's the vibe that probably is disturbing the Liam,
- 20:20Speaker 4: was that you score, or you get the lead with
- 20:24Speaker 4: 20 to 13 with about seven and a half minutes
- 20:27Speaker 4: to go. There was a vibe of, yeah, I don't think,
- 20:33Speaker 4: would have been surprised had they gone down at that point,
- 20:37Speaker 4: the fiber of this team that's been built feels more
- 20:42Speaker 4: resilient than that, and they weren't that resilient yesterday.
- 20:45Speaker 3: Listen, my phone blew up like yours probably did from
- 20:47Speaker 3: people who watched it on TV who, you know, listless,
- 20:50Speaker 3: uninspired in the last fourth quarter. It looks that way
- 20:53Speaker 3: when a team isn't playing well, so that's not the
- 20:56Speaker 3: case at all. Here's the takeaway. The last time we
- 20:59Speaker 3: talked on this set about a regular season loss was
- 21:02Speaker 3: when they gave up a 19-point lead in the fourth
- 21:05Speaker 3: quarter in Houston. It's kind of like Lagerman, right? Lagerman's
- 21:08Speaker 3: got all this forest land that he harvests, right? He
- 21:12Speaker 3: has to have controlled burns to prevent forest fires from
- 21:15Speaker 3: burning down his land.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Farm.
- 21:18Speaker 3: I'm excited to see where this goes. Well, but sometimes
- 21:20Speaker 3: you have to have a little fire to get rid
- 21:22Speaker 3: of all the little stuff that's not going well.
- 21:24Speaker 1: Not a big fire.
- 21:25Speaker 3: Oh, my little mistake. You have a little controlled fire,
- 21:28Speaker 3: which is what they had last year here, where the
- 21:31Speaker 3: coach comes in and he burns out all the undergrowth,
- 21:33Speaker 3: he resets the agenda, and then you come in and
- 21:36Speaker 3: you play better. That's what happened last year. They've got
- 21:38Speaker 3: a little fire this week, right? And you burn out
- 21:41Speaker 3: the undergrowth. Sometimes, in other words, what I'm saying is
- 21:43Speaker 3: you have to have a game like this to be
- 21:45Speaker 3: able to make corrections.
- 21:46Speaker 1: This is the adversity.
- 21:46Speaker 3: I have nothing to add. Wow. Well, that makes my
- 21:50Speaker 3: point even better. I use Lagerman because he's a timber farmer, right?
- 21:53Speaker 1: And he has controlled burns. He's our farmer mountain man.
- 21:55Speaker 3: He has controlled burns to take the undergrowth out. So
- 21:58Speaker 3: this week, they're going to take the undergrowth out. They're
- 21:59Speaker 3: going to fix some things and hope to be ready
- 22:01Speaker 3: for Sunday against the Patriots. A controlled burn as opposed
- 22:05Speaker 3: to a fire.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Okay, so this isn't like a full-on forest fire.
- 22:08Speaker 3: No, it's a controlled burn. Okay, it's a controlled burn.
- 22:10Speaker 4: After rest.
- 22:11Speaker 1: All right. We're going to take a quick break, and
- 22:13Speaker 1: coming back, we will have our hot takes. Controlled burn
- 22:17Speaker 1: hot takes. Welcome back to Jags AM, presented to you
- 22:25Speaker 1: by Lowe's. We're here in the Hyundai Studios, and we
- 22:28Speaker 1: are recapping the Jaguars' first loss of the season. They're 1-1.
- 22:31Speaker 1: They've got a big game coming up this week against
- 22:34Speaker 1: the Patriots back here at Everbank Stadium. But let's give
- 22:37Speaker 1: you our hot takes after two weeks of Jaguars football.
- 22:39Speaker 3: You've got to admit, I set you up for this
- 22:41Speaker 3: transition so well with the whole controlled burn idea, Kai.
- 22:44Speaker 1: And right into a hot take. Is this a controlled
- 22:46Speaker 1: burn take, or is this a fire?
- 22:48Speaker 3: It's a controlled burn take.
- 22:48Speaker 1: No, no, no.
- 22:49Speaker 3: It's totally controlled. So the hot take is that... Brian
- 22:53Speaker 3: Thomas Jr. has too many targets right now. And you
- 22:56Speaker 3: may think that this is a reaction to a ball
- 22:59Speaker 3: that he should have caught at a critical moment in
- 23:01Speaker 3: the game. And it is in a way. It's not really, though.
- 23:05Speaker 3: What I'm looking at is the numbers. The most targeted
- 23:07Speaker 3: receiver on this team is Parker Washington, right?
- 23:10Speaker 1: As it should be. Right.
- 23:11Speaker 3: He has 18 targets. He has 12 catches. And he
- 23:14Speaker 3: averages over 10 yards per target. Jacoby Myers has three targets,
- 23:21Speaker 3: three catches. 22.7 yards per target. Brenton Strange has five targets. Five,
- 23:29Speaker 3: that's it, but he averages 10 per target. What I'm suggesting,
- 23:32Speaker 3: Josh Cameron, right? Not enough, not a big sample size.
- 23:35Speaker 3: Josh Cameron has two catches. He has two targets. He
- 23:38Speaker 3: has 10 yards per target, okay? Not to go too
- 23:41Speaker 3: deep in the weeds if I'm not already there, but
- 23:43Speaker 3: you've got more productive receivers right now. If Brian Thomas Jr.
- 23:47Speaker 3: catches that ball that we just saw the highlight of, well,
- 23:50Speaker 3: then he's much more productive. But right now, he's not
- 23:53Speaker 3: that productive. And I get it. It's not as easy
- 23:55Speaker 3: as saying, well, just throw to the other guy as often. Well,
- 23:57Speaker 3: defenses do things. Scheme does things to take those guys away.
- 24:00Speaker 3: But what I'm saying is that this offense would be better,
- 24:03Speaker 3: I think, if you're running the ball through Jacoby and
- 24:06Speaker 3: Brenton more than BTJ. And I get it. He's got
- 24:09Speaker 3: a tantalizing skill set, John. And we know that he
- 24:11Speaker 3: is wide receiver one material with his size and his
- 24:16Speaker 3: length and his speed. But when you're targeting him almost
- 24:20Speaker 3: three times as much, 11 targets to three, three times
- 24:24Speaker 3: as much, I don't think that is where this offense
- 24:27Speaker 3: will find success.
- 24:29Speaker 4: My impression probably is that Trevor plays best when it's
- 24:35Speaker 4: happening organically. So he does go with the guy who's
- 24:39Speaker 4: breaking open. Teams looked at film from the offseason and
- 24:42Speaker 4: realized this team runs through Parker and Jacoby. BTJ may
- 24:46Speaker 4: be getting the look that is telling Trevor to go there.
- 24:51Speaker 4: Do you have to change that up and say, hey,
- 24:53Speaker 4: make sure you go to Jacoby and Parker?
- 24:55Speaker 1: Maybe.
- 24:56Speaker 4: But, yeah.
- 24:58Speaker 3: Just to follow up, the throw that ended up at
- 25:01Speaker 3: the feet of LaQuint Allen Jr. on the first drive
- 25:03Speaker 3: of the third quarter, it looks to me, and again,
- 25:06Speaker 3: I'm just watching it just like you are, it looks
- 25:08Speaker 3: to me that he's waiting for Brian Thomas Jr. to clear.
- 25:11Speaker 3: and gets impatient and throws it back over to LeQuint.
- 25:15Speaker 3: Brenton Strange is wide open over here on this side.
- 25:17Speaker 3: So that's the play where I thought, well, maybe it's
- 25:21Speaker 3: being forced into BTJ because of the size, speed, the
- 25:24Speaker 3: intangibles that he brings trying to get him started, whatever
- 25:27Speaker 3: reason it was. But that's where the thought came from yesterday.
- 25:31Speaker 4: Yeah, I went with, I'm going to need it on
- 25:34Speaker 4: the screen. They're built to respond, and they have to respond.
- 25:39Speaker 4: And I kind of go back to, I was asked
- 25:41Speaker 4: a few times in the offseason, why are you so
- 25:43Speaker 4: confident this team's going to be good? And I usually
- 25:46Speaker 4: look for an intangible there because you're talking about a
- 25:48Speaker 4: 17 or 18-game season. I felt like their superpower last
- 25:53Speaker 4: year was not letting stumbles turn into falling flat on
- 25:57Speaker 4: your face, right?
- 25:59Speaker 1: Yes.
- 26:01Speaker 4: This, if what I believe about this team is right,
- 26:07Speaker 4: Sunday feels like a stumble. that they will recover from,
- 26:09Speaker 4: and you'll look back and say, okay, well, they were,
- 26:12Speaker 4: you know, it was Denver. Denver was motivated. It's rare
- 26:17Speaker 4: to sort of knock out a team on the road
- 26:20Speaker 4: that's really good early. It's hard. But that's not given
- 26:25Speaker 4: to you, right? Just because I think that doesn't mean
- 26:27Speaker 4: they're going to go run off eight straight games. I
- 26:30Speaker 4: think they're a mentally tough team. You have to prove
- 26:32Speaker 4: that all the time. If their superpower is listening to
- 26:37Speaker 4: Liam and responding, then that's what they should do now,
- 26:42Speaker 4: with the caveat that you gotta block him.
- 26:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:46Speaker 3: And I rushed the passer better than they did on Sunday.
- 26:47Speaker 3: I won't play the control burn card again, but I'm
- 26:49Speaker 3: going back to the same scenario. Last year, we had
- 26:52Speaker 3: a very difficult conversation on this set after they blew
- 26:54Speaker 3: a 19-point lead.
- 26:55Speaker 1: That's how they responded.
- 26:56Speaker 3: And they responded. And they're built for it because they're coaches, John.
- 27:00Speaker 3: I mean, we knew from the early moments of Leon's
- 27:03Speaker 3: tenure here that he was a guy that was going
- 27:05Speaker 3: to get a lot out of this football team because
- 27:07Speaker 3: of the way that he communicates, the way that he demands,
- 27:09Speaker 3: the way that he expects his team to respond. And
- 27:12Speaker 3: over that eight-game winning streak, there were some moments where
- 27:14Speaker 3: they had to respond. The Arizona game strikes me as
- 27:16Speaker 3: one of those. How about the first quarter of the
- 27:18Speaker 3: Denver game last year where they went three and out
- 27:20Speaker 3: in the first three, and then he finally hits Parker Washington?
- 27:23Speaker 3: You're right. This is a team that's built to respond
- 27:25Speaker 3: because the coach is built to respond and to have
- 27:28Speaker 3: his team ready to go. I fully expect them to
- 27:30Speaker 3: be ready to go on Sunday.
- 27:31Speaker 1: They'll have that opportunity, certainly. I went with Deja Vu
- 27:35Speaker 1: for the D-line, and I mean this in a good
- 27:37Speaker 1: and bad way. In a good way, they're amazing at
- 27:40Speaker 1: stopping the run. Devon Hamilton, we could rant about him
- 27:43Speaker 1: all day. He just does not let anything by him
- 27:45Speaker 1: when they try to rush, but your pass rush is
- 27:48Speaker 1: not getting home without having to use the blitz, and
- 27:50Speaker 1: because of that, you're seeing breakdowns in the secondary. I'm
- 27:53Speaker 1: not bailing them out either. They had their own issues,
- 27:55Speaker 1: but That's the problems we saw in the playoff game
- 27:59Speaker 1: and said that's what needs to get fixed. And unfortunately,
- 28:02Speaker 1: it felt like we were watching that in some ways
- 28:04Speaker 1: again last week because Josh Hines-Allen and Trayvon Walker, maybe
- 28:08Speaker 1: they weren't healthy back end of last season. At least
- 28:09Speaker 1: Trayvon wasn't. They don't have that excuse from week two.
- 28:12Speaker 1: There was no reason they weren't getting home. We saw
- 28:14Speaker 1: their capability. Yes, it was against the Cleveland Browns. They
- 28:17Speaker 1: can do it. We need to see it in games
- 28:19Speaker 1: like this because when you're only successful in stopping the
- 28:21Speaker 1: run and you're not affecting the The quarterback, enough with that.
- 28:25Speaker 1: That's when we see these explosive plays, and that ended
- 28:27Speaker 1: up being their Achilles heel in this, amongst other things.
- 28:30Speaker 3: The tackles for the Broncos played really well yesterday. Garrett
- 28:32Speaker 3: Bowles saw both Josh Heinz-Allen and Trayvon Walker and didn't
- 28:37Speaker 3: give up pressure to either of them. So what has
- 28:40Speaker 3: to happen, in my way of thinking, is they've got
- 28:42Speaker 3: to get something in the middle of that defense. Eric
- 28:44Speaker 3: Armstead was unblockable during the joint practice sessions against the
- 28:47Speaker 3: Panthers and the Buccaneers. We've seen absolutely nothing from him
- 28:50Speaker 3: so far. There's got to be something in the middle
- 28:53Speaker 3: that forces an offense to account for that. Otherwise, everything
- 28:58Speaker 3: slides outside. Where's 41 and 44? And a quarterback is
- 29:02Speaker 3: going to be very comfortable if he doesn't see 41
- 29:05Speaker 3: and 44 flashing across his face. To me, 91 has
- 29:08Speaker 3: got to be more productive in the middle of this
- 29:10Speaker 3: defense if they're going to get the pressure they want. Yeah,
- 29:14Speaker 3: got to affect the quarterback.
- 29:15Speaker 1: Got to get there.
- 29:16Speaker 4: I completely agree.
- 29:18Speaker 1: We'll pontificate. We'll try to come up with some more answers,
- 29:21Speaker 1: but we'll be back after the break to tell you
- 29:23Speaker 1: what's coming up the rest of the week as well.
- 29:25Speaker 1: Week three, Jaguars-Patriots game brought to you by UF Health,
- 29:35Speaker 1: the official healthcare partner of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
- 29:41Speaker 6: Just got to finish. The team's not just going to
- 29:43Speaker 6: roll over for us. Got to go out there and
- 29:45Speaker 6: finish the team. So we didn't finish. Me personally, I
- 29:49Speaker 6: got relaxed. The details are going to be there in
- 29:52Speaker 6: the second half.
- 29:54Speaker 1: And get to the details in the second half. We've
- 29:56Speaker 1: talked about it at length. We've got to start turning
- 29:59Speaker 1: the page as of tomorrow because this Patriots team, another
- 30:03Speaker 1: AFC opponent, that's a big game as well.
- 30:04Speaker 3: Well, listen, you're talking about the defending AFC champions, and
- 30:07Speaker 3: if you saw any of the game against the Steelers,
- 30:10Speaker 3: you saw two things that should be concerning. One is
- 30:12Speaker 3: their defensive line controlled the action, absolutely controlled the action,
- 30:16Speaker 3: both in terms of rushing the passer and really shutting
- 30:19Speaker 3: down the running game. And the other side of the
- 30:21Speaker 3: coin is that their running game was really strong. Travion
- 30:23Speaker 3: Henderson Had that beautiful 39-yard run up the middle. So
- 30:26Speaker 3: both lines of scrimmage for Mike Vrabel's football team are
- 30:30Speaker 3: playing at a high level.
- 30:31Speaker 5: Okay.
- 30:32Speaker 3: The Broncos played at a high level. They didn't in
- 30:34Speaker 3: week one. You didn't in week two. Do it in
- 30:37Speaker 3: week three.
- 30:38Speaker 4: Yeah, this is so cliché. I'm sorry. The Patriots are
- 30:43Speaker 4: much like the Broncos. I think the Jaguars fit into this, too.
- 30:44Speaker 4: They're one of these teams that you can't play two
- 30:48Speaker 4: and a half, three quarters against the Patriots. They know
- 30:51Speaker 4: how they want to play. They're going to keep playing
- 30:53Speaker 4: that way. And you better have a lead. You better
- 31:00Speaker 4: be in control of the game in the fourth quarter
- 31:03Speaker 4: because if you're not, they don't let you back, just
- 31:05Speaker 4: like the Broncos didn't let them back once they took
- 31:07Speaker 4: control of that. But if you believe what you believe
- 31:11Speaker 4: about the Jaguars, and I believe they're one of the
- 31:14Speaker 4: good teams, then you're playing another good team.
- 31:17Speaker 3: You've just lost. And now you win at home and
- 31:21Speaker 3: get yours. Yeah, listen, nothing that I believed about this
- 31:23Speaker 3: team in the preseason has fundamentally changed based on one yesterday.
- 31:26Speaker 3: 14 teams in this league are 1-1 at this point,
- 31:30Speaker 3: including a team as good as the New England Patriots,
- 31:34Speaker 3: a team as good as the Baltimore Ravens, right, who
- 31:38Speaker 3: blew a lead against the New Orleans Patriots. Eight teams
- 31:41Speaker 3: are undefeated. 14 teams are 1-1. You got a chance
- 31:46Speaker 3: to get back to it this week. And that's what
- 31:48Speaker 3: they're going to do. The details are found when you
- 31:50Speaker 3: burn out the underbrush, and there they are. And I'm
- 31:52Speaker 3: not trying to be cute, and I'm not going to
- 31:53Speaker 3: go light my farm on fire. I was trying to
- 31:54Speaker 3: be cute. I'm not going to go light my farm
- 31:56Speaker 3: on fire with this. You have a farm.
- 31:58Speaker 4: I'm going to buy one and light it on fire.
- 32:01Speaker 4: But they're 1-1, and the rest of the division is 0-2.
- 32:05Speaker 4: Long way to go.
- 32:06Speaker 5: Absolutely.
- 32:06Speaker 1: Long, long way to go. We will be here through
- 32:08Speaker 1: all of it. We'll be back on Wednesday as we
- 32:10Speaker 1: start looking ahead to that week three matchup against the Patriots.
- 32:12Speaker 1: Enjoy your week.
