- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome a board. It's the U comemen's basketball coaching So
- 0:02Speaker 1: Dan Hurley at the top of a heap, and the
- 0:05Speaker 1: Husky's playing well. They're number two in the country, eighteen
- 0:08Speaker 1: and one, rolling on the road at home and it's
- 0:13Speaker 1: only halfway through the season. Coach, But so far, so good.
- 0:17Speaker 1: I would think in terms of the kind of positives
- 0:20Speaker 1: that you've been able to create with this team, I think.
- 0:23Speaker 2: That probably overall your your you obviously thrilled with just
- 0:29Speaker 2: where you're standing, you know, and you know, the things
- 0:33Speaker 2: that that are concerning to to any coach and what
- 0:37Speaker 2: you see with your team, the areas you know, where
- 0:40Speaker 2: you got improved for us, you know, overall, rebounding, especially defensive, uh,
- 0:45Speaker 2: you know, just take you know, ball security, taking care
- 0:47Speaker 2: of the basketball. It's been an issue the whole year,
- 0:50Speaker 2: you know, not the transition offensive game has not not
- 0:53Speaker 2: only have we not been efficient, but we we turned
- 0:56Speaker 2: the ball over in transition offense a lot. And then
- 1:00Speaker 2: you know, I would say, uh, you know, just getting
- 1:02Speaker 2: kind of back to you know, the depth being a
- 1:06Speaker 2: strength of the team. It feels like the group you know,
- 1:09Speaker 2: might have might have dragged a little bit of uh,
- 1:11Speaker 2: you know, might it might have dragged butt a little bit.
- 1:14Speaker 2: I can't say a the A word here. We might
- 1:18Speaker 2: have dragged butt into uh into into the weekend. I
- 1:22Speaker 2: think the group looked a little tired uh at Georgetown,
- 1:26Speaker 2: you know, and a little bit in the game prior.
- 1:29Speaker 2: So I thought the you know, the buye came at
- 1:32Speaker 2: a good time for us, and uh, we've got some
- 1:35Speaker 2: things we got to get fixed, uh if we want
- 1:37Speaker 2: to be a championship caliber team this year.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Yeah, you mentioned last week six games, thirteen days something
- 1:44Speaker 1: like that, So I mean, you're playing almost every other day.
- 1:47Speaker 2: I think it was a lie. IM not a lie.
- 1:49Speaker 2: I think I might have gotten it wrong, or at
- 1:52Speaker 2: least somebody might have told me that right before I
- 1:54Speaker 2: said that.
- 1:56Speaker 1: All right, I got to do the bath. I think
- 1:57Speaker 1: you're right that you were wrong. I think that's that's wrong.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Seven Maybe it was seventeen days. But anyway, it felt
- 2:04Speaker 1: like one game after another. And when you have to travel,
- 2:08Speaker 1: you know, I mean, and the players feel it too.
- 2:10Speaker 1: It's it's different. Right, You're not coming home to your
- 2:12Speaker 1: own bed and then go to practice and then going
- 2:15Speaker 1: to the arena at home. You got to get on
- 2:16Speaker 1: a plane, you got to get the bus to the plane.
- 2:19Speaker 1: All that routine gets disrupted for guys, And I mean,
- 2:24Speaker 1: what do you do to try to maintain the sense
- 2:27Speaker 1: of you know that you're going to work it out,
- 2:30Speaker 1: we're gonna play good wherever we are. And that's got
- 2:33Speaker 1: to be one of the tough, tough roles that you
- 2:36Speaker 1: have to play as the head coach.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I think even to some of them, like when
- 2:39Speaker 2: you're on that stretch and you're you're mixing in the
- 2:43Speaker 2: noon tips, you know, some of the you know, I
- 2:46Speaker 2: like a nice four o'clock tip, but the noon tip,
- 2:50Speaker 2: you know, after having just played a really tough Big
- 2:53Speaker 2: East game, because again, the Big East games are different
- 2:56Speaker 2: than a lot of other conference games where you're seeing
- 2:59Speaker 2: you know, you're seeing a lot more physicality and a
- 3:02Speaker 2: lot more rough play and a lot more you know,
- 3:06Speaker 2: grind it out, rock fight type of scenarios in our league.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Uh So those games, the games are a little more taxing.
- 3:13Speaker 2: So you know, the the that noon tip off at Georgetown, man,
- 3:17Speaker 2: that felt like it was on top of you quick.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Yeah, right, and you're pull into town late in the
- 3:23Speaker 1: afternoon and you got to turn around and go with
- 3:25Speaker 1: the arena so on a bye week, Dan, what what
- 3:28Speaker 1: are you trying to accomplish here? You got a few days,
- 3:30Speaker 1: you don't have to play it the Saturday. You just
- 3:33Speaker 1: outline some of the things you want to get better
- 3:35Speaker 1: at as a team. How do you how do you
- 3:37Speaker 1: approach that? What do you do to get those things
- 3:40Speaker 1: back on track?
- 3:41Speaker 2: Yeah? I think you just you you you take a
- 3:44Speaker 2: look at the data, the analytics. Uh you know with
- 3:48Speaker 2: your team obviously you know as a coach, a lot
- 3:51Speaker 2: of the a lot of the numbers are going to
- 3:53Speaker 2: match up with what your gut is telling you. Uh So,
- 3:56Speaker 2: I think you know, for us, it's the things we
- 3:58Speaker 2: talked about, Like, you know, the group, I think number one,
- 4:01Speaker 2: we don't play as as hard as as we've had
- 4:05Speaker 2: past teams play overall like the uh you know, the
- 4:09Speaker 2: entire group, like we're we're not. We don't play with
- 4:14Speaker 2: the same level of relentlessness all over the backboard, getting
- 4:20Speaker 2: after people defensively, just attacking, attacking at both ends of
- 4:25Speaker 2: the court. I think that, you know, the first place
- 4:28Speaker 2: for us to start, you know, this week is like
- 4:30Speaker 2: we've got to get back to our identity as a program,
- 4:32Speaker 2: which is making the other team uncomfortable with how hard
- 4:36Speaker 2: we play, how hard we can test everything, you know,
- 4:39Speaker 2: and you see it's it shows up for us in
- 4:41Speaker 2: a negative way, you know, on the backboard, where we're
- 4:45Speaker 2: not the rebounding team that we need to be if
- 4:46Speaker 2: we want to win something this year. So I would say,
- 4:49Speaker 2: just you know, the first thing for us is is
- 4:52Speaker 2: how hard we play. We've got to get back to
- 4:55Speaker 2: how hard our teams have played in the past. Now,
- 4:57Speaker 2: part of that is we've got some nice guys, you know,
- 5:00Speaker 2: guys that are kind of happy, go lucky, guys that
- 5:03Speaker 2: you know. It's just that they're really nice guys, and
- 5:06Speaker 2: you don't win big things with nice guys. That's true.
- 5:11Speaker 1: So it's more than urgency. It's bigger than that. It's
- 5:14Speaker 1: like a frenzy. You most want a frenzy from your
- 5:17Speaker 1: team when you're on the court against an opponent.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, you've got to be in a frenzy.
- 5:21Speaker 2: You want to be in a frenzy to scramble and
- 5:23Speaker 2: help each other Defensively, you want to be in a
- 5:26Speaker 2: frenzy to get a rebound. You want to be in
- 5:28Speaker 2: a frenzy to sprint the court in transition offense or defense.
- 5:32Speaker 2: You want to be in a frenzy to go grab
- 5:34Speaker 2: a fifty to fifty ball or a forty sixty ball.
- 5:37Speaker 2: You want to be in a frenzy, you know, with
- 5:40Speaker 2: kind of the pace that you're cutting at on offense.
- 5:42Speaker 2: And I think, you know, part of you know, us
- 5:47Speaker 2: playing harder, playing faster, playing with greater pace, you know,
- 5:52Speaker 2: picking people up full court playing harder is you know,
- 5:56Speaker 2: it's going to tire people out and it'll force us
- 6:00Speaker 2: to use the bench a little bit more, which is
- 6:02Speaker 2: you know what we want to do. Anyway, Now the
- 6:04Speaker 2: bench guys have got to play better when they're in.
- 6:06Speaker 2: But uh, you know, I just think that the you know,
- 6:09Speaker 2: the cumulative effect of us playing a lot harder is
- 6:13Speaker 2: gonna allow us to put together a full forty minute game,
- 6:17Speaker 2: and uh, you know we we've For me, it's probably
- 6:22Speaker 2: the biggest thing that bothers me about the team is
- 6:24Speaker 2: just just being you know, being killers and uh being
- 6:30Speaker 2: relentless and and uh want to dominate their opponent. Yeah.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Uh, and you've got some tough opponents coming up. You've
- 6:37Speaker 1: got Villanova twice, You've got Creating twice, You've got Saint
- 6:40Speaker 1: John's twice, You've got Seaton Hall again. So I mean
- 6:43Speaker 1: you got top of the league stuff coming up. So
- 6:47Speaker 1: to get the guys in that frame of mind, is
- 6:50Speaker 1: that something you've got to do or their teammates have
- 6:52Speaker 1: to do? What what is really going to trigger that
- 6:55Speaker 1: ascension in intensity? I guess is where I'm getting at.
- 6:59Speaker 2: I mean, we we I don't think in practice, you know,
- 7:03Speaker 2: and again it's not you know, it sounds like you know,
- 7:06Speaker 2: you know, you know, I guess you don't want it
- 7:08Speaker 2: to come across their own way, but you just you
- 7:10Speaker 2: want them to mirror you know, I think the staff
- 7:13Speaker 2: in terms of how hard the staff coaches them, you know,
- 7:18Speaker 2: the standards that demands. You know, we just again, our
- 7:22Speaker 2: best players have got got to lead the way with that.
- 7:25Speaker 2: You know, you need a guy. You know, if Tarris
- 7:27Speaker 2: is one of our best players, you know, he's got
- 7:29Speaker 2: to become a dominant player, not you know, he's got
- 7:32Speaker 2: to play harder, He's got to protect a rim Moore,
- 7:34Speaker 2: he's got to rebound the ball better. Alex is you know,
- 7:37Speaker 2: Alex has got to play with you know, with a
- 7:39Speaker 2: greater energy and a greater intensity. The same thing with solo,
- 7:43Speaker 2: you know, just across the board. I think that the
- 7:46Speaker 2: you know, the group has gotta you know, the group's
- 7:49Speaker 2: got to get after it more. You know. Again, it's
- 7:51Speaker 2: not something you ever had to say to Cam Spencer, uh,
- 7:55Speaker 2: you know, or Domasonogo or Donovan Klingon. I mean, these
- 7:58Speaker 2: guys just naturally with their personality, they were incredibly competitive,
- 8:02Speaker 2: and they were driven and determined to win, to win everything.
- 8:07Speaker 2: And you know who knows is it the fact that
- 8:10Speaker 2: life is really good? You know, these guys are in
- 8:12Speaker 2: college now. It's you know, life is really good for them.
- 8:16Speaker 2: They're on a team that's right number two in the country.
- 8:19Speaker 2: You know, we got nil, we got the portal. You know,
- 8:21Speaker 2: we got you know, these guys got a lot of
- 8:23Speaker 2: followers on social media. You know, life's good. Life's good.
- 8:27Speaker 1: You win fourteen in a row, you're eighteen and one,
- 8:29Speaker 1: you might tend to coast a little bit. Maybe, all right,
- 8:32Speaker 1: we'll be back with Dan early. More of the coaches
- 8:35Speaker 1: show here on Learfield in a moment
