- 0:12Hello, True Crime and wine tyme friends, I am beyond excited to tell
- 0:17you about our sponsor this week. And no it's not just because there are
- 0:21our sponsor, it's because their wines are amazing Usual Wines. These wines are
- 0:30low carb and have zero grams of sugar. Usual Wines are wines for the
- 0:36modern drinker who loves wine made with minimal intervention. Each bottle is six point
- 0:44three ounces, which is either a heavy pore or about a glass and a
- 0:49half. For me, it's just my size. I love that my rose
- 0:54is never stale, always fresh, and the single serf bottle design is not
- 1:00just functional, but in my opinion, adorable. I no longer have to
- 1:06worry about opening a bottle and feeling like I have to drink all of it
- 1:10that night or more than I want to. Just I don't have to pour
- 1:14wine down the sink the next day, which we all know is a horrible
- 1:18thing. The single serve is perfect and also allows me to have a glass
- 1:23of the Brute and then try a glass of the Brute Rose with zero wine
- 1:30waists that night. Usual has a red blend a Rose and a sparkling white
- 1:34wine called Brute, and they have a limited production Brute Rose just for the
- 1:42summer, and I have to say it is my new favorite. Usual Wines
- 1:47are made from the world class American vinicultural area in California like Napa, Sonoma
- 1:55and Santa Barbara. Do you want to know it's even better? They deliver
- 2:00right to your door. Go visit their website at www dot Usualwines dot com.

- 2:52True Crime and Wine time friends. It's your host, Terry Do sold
- 2:55and I am back. I hope everyone is doing well during these crazy times.
- 3:00Twenty has been like a roller coaster ride here in Texas. Now during
- 3:07our break, I've had the pleasure of home schooling our granddaughter, who is
- 3:10in first grade while her parents were working. I also enjoyed some daily Pokemon
- 3:15Go runs during the shutdown, and of course, lots of couple time with
- 3:21handsome Hubby. Somehow he still loves me, even after being stuck with me
- 3:27twenty four seven for several months. I think he needs a medal. I
- 3:32missed you all and I look forward to our season two. So let's get
- 3:38going today. I'm going to share with you a story of Jerry Walter McFadden,
- 3:44also known as the Animal. Now the important stuff for today's episode,
- 3:50I am enjoying a class of Brute Rose from Usual Wines. It is a
- 3:57light in Chris rose with bubbles that make me say ah yes. This wine
- 4:03is expertly made in small batches from sustainably farmed grapes with no additives and minimal
- 4:12intervention the real way. I have to tell y'all, this has become my
- 4:15go to why lately, and I love it. Now let's open it,
- 4:20get my class poured so we can get started. There we go. I
- 4:32love the smell of it, not just the taste, It's just I love
- 4:38it. Like I said, it's one of my new go to wines.
- 4:40Let me give it a sip, make sure it's adequate for recording today.
- 4:45You know, I think it's gonna work. I need to tell you this
- 4:47episode contains graphic content, adult language, and may not be suitable for all
- 4:54listeners. Jerry Walter McFadden was born in March twenty first, nineteen four eight,
- 5:00to Herman Lee McFadden in Dorothy Lucille Todd in Haskell, Texas. Haskell,
- 5:06Texas sits about one hundred and sixty two miles from Denton and one hundred
- 5:11and forty seven miles from Lubbock, so needless to say, it is out
- 5:15there in central Texas. Haskell, Texas today only has roughly about thirty three
- 5:20hundred residents, and a fun fact I found while researching this was that former
- 5:27presidential candidate Rick Perry and his wife are both from Haskell. Haskell, Texas
- 5:32is a town that was a traditional small oil town that had a close knit
- 5:36community. Jerry started having issues when he was a teenager. He dropped out
- 5:42of school after completing the seventh grade. At the age of nineteen, he
- 5:46married Judy's Story, who was only fifteen at the time of their marriage.
- 5:53Okay, guys, you know me, I have to stop, gotta take
- 5:57a quick sip. It's amazing. I gotta find reasons to sip this.
- 6:00I want to know what in the hell were the girl's parents thinking? Why
- 6:05did they allow their daughter to get married at fifteen, especially to someone who
- 6:11was nineteen and dropped out of junior high school. Hello, no, just
- 6:16no, not no, but hell no, sorry, good thing, I'm
- 6:21not having your daughters. Let's keep going. Jerry began his first officially documented
- 6:28encounters with the legal system in nineteen sixty six, when he was convicted of
- 6:31burglary and then in nineteen sixty eight for destruction of property. Jerry was fine
- 6:36for these offenses and sent on his way. In October of nineteen sixty nine,
- 6:42Jerry and Judy welcome their first child, a daughter whose name I will
- 6:46not share with you, as I feel she deserves to live her life without
- 6:49throwing her into the crazy life her father created. In nineteen seventy one,
- 6:56Jerry was convicted of a simple assault and once again fined. Jerry and Judy
- 7:00welcome their second child, a son, in August of nineteen seventy three,
- 7:04which I find very interesting because in nineteen seventy three, Jerry, or I
- 7:12should say, as he called himself, the animal, was convicted of two
- 7:15rapes and sentenced to two fifteen year sentences that were to run concurrent. I
- 7:20have to say I'm not really comfortable with calling Jerry the animal, as I
- 7:26feel it's very disrespectful and a disgrace to animals. Sorry, Jerry, you
- 7:31don't get to tell me what to call you. Oh quick, friends,
- 7:36Kim, take a big drink, and I'm gonna just say, if you
- 7:39have a glass, to take a drink because you're gonna need it. Because
- 7:42this next part really gets to you. Jerry the ps he was was out
- 7:47raping a fourteen year old girl and a junior high school teacher while he was
- 7:53also fathering a child with his wife. I mean, seriously, guys,
- 7:58he had a daughter who was maybe three or fo for it this time,
- 8:01and he rapes a fourteen year old girl. I personally feel he got what
- 8:05was coming to him in the end. So let's keep going as Jerry isn't
- 8:09done with his reign of terror yet. Jerry was paroled in December of nineteen
- 8:15seventy eight after serving only five years of his two fifteen year sentences. He
- 8:20was reached early for good behavior. Really, you can rape two people,
- 8:26get two fifteen years sentences and get out in a few years because you were
- 8:31good. Did anybody stop to think maybe he was good because there were no
- 8:35females around. Oh, he's sorry. Jerry was on parole after being released
- 8:43early from prison and was supposed to be following very strict rules. We find
- 8:46out later that he even left Texas while on parole, which is a no
- 8:52no unless you have permission from your parole officer. And considering Jerry wasn't a
- 8:58role follower, I knew he did not have permission. Jerry was still on
- 9:03parole when he was convicted of aggravated sexual assault of an eighteen year old in
- 9:09nineteen seventy nine. Yes, you heard me. He was on parole when
- 9:13he was once again convicted, and once again Jerry was sentenced to fifteen years
- 9:20in prison, but was paroled in nineteen eighty five. Reports say that Jerry
- 9:26assured the authorities that he would have followed the terms of his release. Come
- 9:31on, guys, really, I've shocked that someone believed him when he told
- 9:35him this. Jerry was released to Wood County and the local sheriff and residence
- 9:43were not happy about it, and I have to say I cannot blame them.
- 9:46And I would have been sleeping with the gun under my pillow. I
- 9:50would have been extracautious and I would have locked up any females in my family.
- 9:54My head totally started spending out of control while researching the story in all
- 10:00of these cases, I was somewhat hopeful when I read articles at say Texas
- 10:05is not as gracious as it was before by granting early release. So there's
- 10:09something about. A month after Jerry was prolled this second time, a couple
- 10:16were visiting Lake Hawkins called them reported a scary encounter with a long hair,
- 10:22wild looking guy with lots of tattoos who had pulled a weapon on them and
- 10:26asked them for money and a quickie. The couple were able to give the
- 10:30police a solid description of the wild looking man, the vehicle they had seen
- 10:35him with, and the exact location they had seen him. At the same
- 10:39time, unbeknownest to police, family and friends of Susianne Harrison, Gina Turner
- 10:46and Brian Boone were worried because the friends had gone out to Lake Hawkins for
- 10:50a drive and had not returned home after a couple of hours. They alerted
- 10:56the police. I can't say why the police jumped into such quick action,
- 11:01but a search was launched and a witnesses reported seeing a strange and wild looking
- 11:07guy with lots of tattoos and a blue and white vehicle, the same description
- 11:13they got from the couple that was held up by gunpoint. Bryan's brother found
- 11:16his truck a band and not far from where the couple since they were confronted
- 11:20by the man with the gun. The police were anxious and eager to find
- 11:26the strange man that was reported and set about searching for him or his vehicle.
- 11:31They did not find him on that first day, and sadly, the
- 11:35next day, May fifth, nineteen eighty six, the body of Suzanne Harrison,
- 11:41age eighteen, was found strangled with her own panties atop Barnwell Mountain by
- 11:48some workers. Suzanne had been savagely raped and sodomized and murdered. The very
- 11:54next day, police found their man driving on State Highway their and pulled over
- 12:01Jerry Walter McFadden, where he was immediately taken into custody on suspicion of aggravated
- 12:09robbery for trying to rob the couple by the lake. Jerry was in police
- 12:13custody and was being questioned about the robbery and about Suzanne's death when the bodies
- 12:20of Gina Turner, aged twenty and Brian Boone, aged nineteen were found.
- 12:26Both had been shot and then tossed into a ditch several miles away. Later,
- 12:30ammunition found in Jerry's possession was identified as a match to what was used
- 12:35in the killings of Gina and Brian. Jerry Walter McFadden was charged and held
- 12:41for trial. Jerry was being held in Upshurre County, as that is where
- 12:46the bodies were found and the crimes committed. It was reported that Jerry was
- 12:50an easy prisoner and did not give the jailers any issues. On July ninth,
- 12:56nineteen eighty six, Sheriff Deputy Kin Mayfield let Jerry out to make a
- 13:01phone call, and upon Deputy Mayfield opening the door to the isolation room,
- 13:07he was knocked out by Jerry, who had pulled a piece of steel pipe
- 13:11off of the window frame. Jerry then took one of the dispatchers and locked
- 13:16them in the isolation cell, along with a Deputy Mayfield, who was bleeding
- 13:20profusely from the head wound. Jerry then retrieved Deputy Mayfield's gun from the drawer
- 13:26where it was cut locked up. Officers were not allowed to carry their gun
- 13:30near prisoners, and little did they know Jerry had been patiently watching all of
- 13:35their movements and knew that the gun was locked in the dush drawer. Jerry
- 13:41then kidnapped the other dispatcher, Rosalie William's Turner, by gunpoint, and took
- 13:46her in her own car and fled the jail. Now, as Jerry got
- 13:52into the driver's seat of Rosalie's car, he attempted to start the car.
- 13:56Jerry did not know how to drive a standard and didn't know how to start
- 14:01the car, so he had Rosalie come around from the passenger side start the
- 14:05car, and then he put her back on the passenger side he got behind
- 14:09the wheel. Jerry drove off with Rosalie down Texas Highway eleven, with his
- 14:16jail break undetected. At this point, after officers and others tried to reach
- 14:20the dispatchers and received no answer, they headed into the jail to find out
- 14:26what was going on. There, they found Deputy Mayfield and the other dispatcher
- 14:31locked in the isolation room. Deputy sent the word out that Jerry Walter McFadden
- 14:37had not only escaped, but that he had kidnapped one of their own law
- 14:43enforcement as you can imagine, jumped into action immediately started trying to close roads
- 14:50send a helicopter up to search for the escapee, and upon hearing the helicopter,
- 14:56Jerry became a very agitated and drove off the road directly into a tree.
- 15:01Jerry then grabbed Rosalie and they walked all through the night. The kidnapping
- 15:09of Rosalie Williams Turner launched one of the biggest man hunts in Texas history,
- 15:16with over twelve hundred officers assisting. Now, after walking all night, Jerry
- 15:22and Rosalie were in Big Sandy, where Jerry held Rosalie captive in an empty
- 15:28box car he found on the railroad tracks. Rosalie later says that they could
- 15:33hear people driving across the roo at nearby tracks, and workers were talking and
- 15:39walking around the box car, but no one ever looked inside the car.
- 15:45And remember, guys, it's July in Texas, and that means it was
- 15:48blistering hot. So after spinning all day in the car, it's coming up
- 15:54on the evening. Rosalie was dehydrated, Jerry was dehydrated. Rosalie was crying
- 16:00and screaming in ash Jerry for water. He told her to be quiet and
- 16:04he would get them some water. Jerry got up and left the box car,
- 16:08where he encountered a dog, and I'm going to just say the dog
- 16:12did not like Jerry very much, and the dog started viciously attacking him.
- 16:18Good job, dog. But when Rosalie hurt the commotion, she took this
- 16:22as her chance to escape. She jumped from the box car and took off,
- 16:27running in the opposite direction from where Jerry was fighting with the dog.
- 16:33Rosalie ran to a nearby home, where she found help in the Martinez family.
- 16:37They helped clean Rosalie up, got her some water, and then called
- 16:41the Big Sandy Police Department to report that Rosalie had escaped and was in their
- 16:48home. They had, of course, like everybody else in Texas, seen
- 16:52Rosalie's picture on the news in the newspaper. The police station was only about
- 16:59a block away, and police Chief Richard Lingle chumped up and drove straight to
- 17:04the Martinez home where he found Rosalie and he barched in and he gave her
- 17:10a big hug. Obviously they knew each other, both work in law enforcement
- 17:15neighboring towns. Chief Lingle called him back up and started setting up roadblocks in
- 17:22Big Sandy. Chief Lingle, along with Sheriff Dale Jukes, set up a
- 17:26search team which started the train tracks and then they decided to spread out.
- 17:33When Jerry was not found near the tracks, the teams expanded the search to
- 17:37include vacant homes and empty buildings in Big Sandy. Now, out of those
- 17:42twelve hundred officers that came to help in the search, one was a SWAT
- 17:47team from Colin County and they came into help and they while going door to
- 17:52door, building to building, they kicked a door in on a vacant house
- 17:56where they found Jerry hiding in the bathroom. Jerry was arrested without any resistance.
- 18:03Once again, Jerry was taken back to the courthouse in Upshore County.
- 18:10There is a picture on our website of Upshore County, along with a lot
- 18:15of other pictures from this case, but it's kind of interesting to see what
- 18:18it looks like. It is said that there were crowds gathered around the courthouse
- 18:25and that the SWAT team and other law enforcement teams celebrated the capture of Jerry.
- 18:30Walter McFadden I couldn't see that. Right After five delays, Jerry stood
- 18:36trial in Bell County, where the trial was moved on a change of venue
- 18:41request. A little fun fact here. One of the delays was due to
- 18:45the fact adjuror got attacked by his rooster and he had some rooster damage.
- 18:51She got packed a couple of times. Oly in Texas, right or I
- 18:56think only in Texas. I don't know. Anyway, the trial would forward.
- 19:00Jerry stood trial only for the rape and strangulation of Suzanne Denise Harrison,
- 19:07so rape and murder. During the trial, doctor Moses Schenghill testified that the
- 19:12phenotypes detected in one of the samples from Suzanne Harrison was the same as those
- 19:18detected in the blood of Jerry. The prosecution called more than sixty witnesses and
- 19:26presented over a hundred and seventy pieces of evidence in the trial. On July
- 19:32eighth, nineteen eighty seven, the prosecution rested their case and turned it over
- 19:37to the defense. During the trial, the prosecution attempted to prevent Rosalie William's
- 19:42Turner from testifying because they didn't want her to testify about what Jerry said to
- 19:48her during her kidnapping, but the judge denied their requests. Rosalie testified for
- 19:55roughly three hours during which time she did finally recount what Jerry said to her,
- 20:00and I, quote Rosie, They're going to give me the needle for
- 20:06something I didn't do. I didn't even know those three kids, quote Rosalie
- 20:14also testified that at no time did Jerry cause her physical harm. She said
- 20:18he looked scared. During the defense testimony, one witness testified that he saw
- 20:23a dirty, unshaven hitchhiker who had bloody scratches on his face and neck.
- 20:30Several other witnesses also said they saw the same man that exact same week the
- 20:36murders took place. Eddie Williams said that the police did not even talk to
- 20:40the three witnesses who reported the dirty hitchhiker and that they only focused on Jerry.
- 20:47Guess they're trying to say, maybe it wasn't Jerry. Yes, it's
- 20:52phenotypes don't matter. The jury deliberated for about four and a half hours.
- 20:56It was unanimous. After the guilty verdict was announced and before the death penalty
- 21:03phase began, Jerry's seventeen year old daughter testified that she loved her father and
- 21:11asked jurors to not give him the death penalty, which she described as murder,
- 21:17she said, and I quote, no man has the right to murder.
- 21:22If it's wrong for him to do it, then it's wrong for you
- 21:26to do it. The jury took thirty five minutes to return the death penalty
- 21:30verdict. Walter McFadden was convicted and sentenced to die by the lethal injection.
- 21:37The defense team said they would be filling an appeal, which is automatic in
- 21:41Texas, and they felt competent that the truth would come out and the conviction
- 21:47would be overturned. After exhausting all of his appeals, Jerry's conviction was upheld
- 21:55and he died by lethal injection on October fifteenth, nineteen ninety nine, at
- 22:00six sixteen pm. Jerry chose not to make any final statements before his execution.
- 22:07It was said the needle that contained the death cocktail was inserted to write
- 22:12above a large satanic face on Jerry's arm, and that on Jerry's chest.
- 22:18The saying death before dishonor for the lonesome loser was tattooed, and there is
- 22:26a picture of this on the website. It's creepy as heck now. Suzanne's
- 22:33mother burst into tears upon entering the execution chamber. Crying out. I quote
- 22:38he took our children due After Jerry was pronounced dead, Harrison then said it's
- 22:47done. I'm ready to go home. Jerry Walter McFadden's reign of terror had
- 22:52ended. However, it's not the end of his story. Now, before
- 22:57we head into the next twist, I'm going to grab a quick drink now,
- 23:03I have to also tell you this next part I'm about to share with
- 23:06you is how I wound up covering Jerry Walter McFadden's case. I originally started
- 23:15researching just this next portion and decided to cover all of it. Are you
- 23:21ready? On July twenty fourth, nineteen seventy nine, Anna Marie Halvacca worked
- 23:26her shift at the nearby McDonald's and then headed home to the apartment that she
- 23:32shared with her sister, Rose inn Halvec and her boyfriend. Rose said it
- 23:37had been a typical day and that when she returned home, she opened the
- 23:41door and called out for her sister. Anna did not answer, and when
- 23:47Rose went into the bedroom, she found her beloved twenty year old sister deceased
- 23:52and sprawled out in the bedroom. Anna had been strangled with the electrical cord
- 23:56from her clock radio and sexually asted. Upon arrival to the home, police
- 24:03did not find any signs of a break in, but they did find a
- 24:07window that had been left open. The police did a great job interviewing countless
- 24:11suspects, collecting forensic evidence, and searching for Anna's killer. Sadly, the
- 24:18case went stone cold, that is until two thousand and nine. In two
- 24:23thousand and nine, the Portland Police Department sent old evidence from Anna's case to
- 24:30see if new DNA technology might help them turn up a lead as to who
- 24:36killed Anna. Surprisingly, a full DNA profile from an unknown male was found.
- 24:42Police team was excited. They immediately uploaded that DNA profile in Dakotas and
- 24:51were shocked when there was no hit. Once again, the case went cold,
- 24:57that is until Detective Meredith Hopper took over the case in twenty twelve and
- 25:03began painstakingly trying to match the DNA profile with several suspects that had been identified
- 25:11over the years, and none of them were a match. Once again,
- 25:15this case started to grow cold. Then one day, Detective Harper was reading
- 25:22a news story on how Joseph James DeAngelo, the Golden State killer, was
- 25:29linked to thirteen murders in fifty rapes by using a public genealogy database. Yes,
- 25:37sorry, guys, I love that This prompted Detective Hopper to send over
- 25:41the DNA profile from Anna's case to Parabond Nano Labs in hopes that either the
- 25:48killer or one of his family members had submitted their information to one of the
- 25:53public sites. The case was no longer cold. October of twenty eighteen,
- 26:02Parabond Nano Labs notified Detective Hopper they had a match to McFadden. Yes,
- 26:11Jerry Walter McFadden told you her story wasn't over now, Detective Hopper, as
- 26:18was I when I first started looking into this, was puzzled as to how
- 26:22Cherry's DNA was not in CODUS, so along with her partner, Detective Brendan
- 26:27McGuire, they headed to Texas. During their trip to Texas, they learned
- 26:33that the state did not start tracking DNA until nineteen ninety five, and as
- 26:38we know, Jerry was already on death row awaiting his day with the needle.
- 26:44McFadden's family cooperated with the detectives and provided DNA samples so that they could
- 26:49confirm, double check that the DNA was a match. Also, while talking
- 26:55with McFadden's family. They discovered that he had traveled with the friend to Portland
- 27:00in nineteen seventy nine. Okay, guys, my first thought, how in
- 27:04the hell did Jerry travel to Portland when he was on parole? As I
- 27:11said, I guessing he went without telling his parole officer. When the detectives
- 27:17returned to Portland, they met with Rose and Havoca and family to give them
- 27:22the news that they had found Anna's killer and that he had been executed in
- 27:26Texas in nineteen ninety nine. Guys, I hope this news provided some piece
- 27:33for the family. Is I'm not sure how you ever find closure? And
- 27:37I know that's a word that's thrown around a lot. I'm not sure how
- 27:41you ever find closure when one of your family members is brutally attacked and murdered.
- 27:47I don't know. Now, before we wrap up, I want to
- 27:51go into a quick timeline of Jerry's life and crimes because it frustrates me that
- 27:59the law did not protect the innocent. Okay, I mean, we know
- 28:03he was born in nineteen forty eight, he married a fifteen year old when
- 28:08he was nineteen in nineteen sixty six. Once again, why did her parents
- 28:15say that they could get married because you couldn't get married without parental consent.
- 28:22And Jerry had his first brush with the law in sixty six when he was
- 28:27convicted of burglary, and then in sixty eight when he got charged with destruction
- 28:33of property. Daughter was born nineteen sixty nine. Seventy one, he was
- 28:40convicted of a simple assault, paid a fine. Nineteen seventy two, he
- 28:45was convicted of a d wi in given probation nineteen seventy two into seventy three,
- 28:52he was sentenced to two fifteen years sentences for two counts of a rape.
- 28:57Mind you some was born seventy three. He was paroled in seventy eight.
- 29:03In December of seventy eight, he killed Anna in Portland July of nineteen
- 29:10seventy nine. He had still been in prison where he should have been,
- 29:15he wouldn't have killed Anna, okay. Then he sentenced to fifteen years again
- 29:23in nineteen seventy nine for the aggravated rape and kidnapping of an eighteen year old.
- 29:30His wife got smart divorced him into eighty once again. He was paroled
- 29:34in July of nineteen eighty five, where he moved in with his mother and
- 29:38his sister. Then not very long goes by. He holds up the couple,
- 29:45demands money and a quickie by gunpoint, lets them go, kidnaps and
- 29:52kills Suzanne Harrison, Gina Turner, and Brian Boone in nineteen eighty six,
- 29:57then escapes jail. I mean, let's just go back. If he would
- 30:03have still been in jail, Anna wouldn't have been killed. He never got
- 30:07tried for that case because he was already dead. If he wouldn't have been
- 30:12out, he wouldn't have been able to do that. And if he would
- 30:15have still been in jail when he got prolled in eighty five, he couldn't
- 30:18have killed Suzanne, Gina and Brian. Then he escaped jail. He had
- 30:25no handcuffs on in the jail. I don't get why you take a prisoner
- 30:30out of an isolation room to a phone with no handcuffs when they've raped,
- 30:37killed, robbed. I mean, explain it to me. Think about it.
- 30:41The fact that he was paroled the first time after serving only five and
