Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Tierra, and welcome to Rooted Thoughts Podcast.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: On today's episode, we are going to be actually learning about the skill of emotional recovery.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: I decided to cover this topic because we spend so much time talking about how to avoid stress, but sometimes we forget to talk about what to do after we have already experienced it.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Of course, many of us know how to work, we know how to push through, and we know how to survive Monday through Friday.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: But a lot of us did not learn how to reset and emotionally come home to ourselves after carrying everyone else's expectations during the day.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: So if you are someone who is constantly exhausted, emotionally numb, or you just feel like your weekends disappear before you actually feel rested, especially if you are someone who does work where you are of service to others.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: This episode is definitely for you.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Burnout doesn't happen overnight.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: Some people imagine burnout as being this single event that just happens, but usually it actually isn't.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Burnout is usually hundreds of small things like saying yes when you really meant to say no, or skipping lunch because you're busy, or in my case, skipping lunch because I'm finally at a good flow where I'm focused and I'm too scared to actually break that.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Or it's carrying difficult conversations or events home with you.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: It's feeling emotionally responsible for everyone else's problem, or never giving your mind permission to be off.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: And I'm no different from anyone else.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: The whole reason I chose this topic this week is because I myself have been actively trying to focus on resetting mentally.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: One reason that I knew that I needed to mentally reset is because I started to notice that right before I started falling asleep, I found myself mentally preparing for work for the next day.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: I was kind of saying, like, okay, let me see what I'm gonna do first so that in the morning I can just hop right on and already know what I'm gonna do.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: So let's talk about what emotional recovery actually means.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: Recovery is different from distraction.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: It's more than watching TV, it's more than just scrolling on social media, shopping, or just sleeping all weekend.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Recovery means intentionally taking the backpack full of emotions off before the next day.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: And if you still don't understand what I mean, just go listen to the song by Erica Badu Back Lady.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: She can definitely explain it better than I can.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: One of the main reasons that we do stay stuck in stress is because if we never process our day, our minds keep trying to solve it.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Especially for those of us that are overanalyzers or overthinkers, we must take constant thinking for preparation when really it just extends the stress.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: You are listening to Real Thoughts Podcast with your host, Tiara.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Follow and leave me a review.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: So I'm gonna talk about now five ways in which we can build an emotional recovery routine.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: So, number one, create a transition ritual.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: This entails teaching your brain that work is over.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: This can be changing your clothes immediately, it could be washing your face, walking around the block, or just listening to common music.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: Step two, empty your mind.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: Instead of carrying everything in your brain, write it down.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Your brain can relax when it knows that it doesn't have to remember every single thing.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: Step three, move the stress out of your body.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Stress is more than mental, it's also physical.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: So go for a walk, stretch, lift weights, dance, or whatever you have to do to get that stress out of your body.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Number four, stop earning rest.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: Rest isn't a reward, it's maintenance.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: So you don't have to accomplish enough to deserve the rest.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Just take the rest.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: And step five, give yourself something to look forward to.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: A part of reducing stress is increasing joy.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: That can be reading, gardening, calling a friend, listening to music, taking a warm bath with Epson salt and candles.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: And I know that's very specific, but the reason why I said that is because I actually did that yesterday.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: And it can also be just creating something.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: So this is what I want you to try.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: Whenever you have a stressful day, ask yourself, what happened?
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: What am I feeling?
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: And what do I need?
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: And I know this episode has been a short episode, and that's because I just wanted to drop something on you guys.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Something easy, simple that you can listen to really quick and actually practice.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: And I want you to remember that emotional recovery is the foundation that allows you to not only keep showing up for yourself, but also the people in the life that matters most.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Sierra, and this is Rooted Thoughts Podcast.
