- 0:00Speaker 1: This is an iHeart Podcast. Guaranteed human.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Previously on The Chosen People. Mankind was blighted by bloodshed
- 0:11Speaker 2: and discord. Noah was determined to oppose the culture. Like
- 0:17Speaker 2: his great-grandfather Enoch, Noah possessed a heart attuned to God's voice.
- 0:23Speaker 3: These are dark times, my sons.
- 0:26Speaker 4: Remaining in the light will require wisdom.
- 0:31Speaker 3: Learn to listen to the voice of God. Behold, I
- 0:36Speaker 3: would destroy them with the earth. I would bring a
- 0:39Speaker 3: flood to wipe this earth clean.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Noah's heart tightened. He fell to his knees, the weight
- 0:46Speaker 2: of God's words pressing down on him.
- 0:49Speaker 1: What have I to do with this knowledge?
- 0:52Speaker 3: I have appointed you, Noah, to build an ark.
- 0:56Speaker 2: The whole thing seemed inconceivable and far-fetched. We're building a
- 1:00Speaker 2: ship in the middle of the valley.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Shem, that's what's wrong.
- 1:05Speaker 5: Everyone from here to the desert has visited to.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Mock us, and I don't blame them.
- 1:09Speaker 1: This is insane! How are these planes going to flood?
- 1:13Speaker 1: Where will the water even come from?
- 1:16Speaker 2: Charcoal clouds galloped across the sky. With them came a
- 1:20Speaker 2: chilly wind that bit at their cheeks. They hadn't heard
- 1:24Speaker 2: the clapping of families. The sound made their muscles tense,
- 1:28Speaker 2: as if they were witnessing the birth of a new predator.
- 1:33Speaker 4: And so, it begins.
- 1:42Speaker 1: The man's gone mad. Look at it.
- 1:45Speaker 2: A boat in the middle of a valley.
- 1:47Speaker 1: His mind's made of clay.
- 1:50Speaker 5: The lunatic thinks he's going to sail away to the
- 1:53Speaker 5: sea from the valley!
- 1:55Speaker 2: A glob of mud and ox dung flew through the
- 1:58Speaker 2: air and hit Noah square in the face. It stuck
- 2:01Speaker 2: to his beard, contrasting with the white streaks that had
- 2:05Speaker 2: formed since the beginning of the ark's construction. The mud
- 2:09Speaker 2: smeared across his face, mingling with the sweat and grime
- 2:13Speaker 2: of relentless toil. He ignored their mockery and kept his
- 2:17Speaker 2: head low. He buffed out a piece of lumber before
- 2:20Speaker 2: hoisting it onto his shoulder. Noah's arms were thick and
- 2:24Speaker 2: tight like a rope. Months of crafting the ark added
- 2:28Speaker 2: more grey to his beard and muscle to his body.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Behind him, his sons toiled in silence, their hands calloused
- 2:36Speaker 2: and their spirits weary under the weight of the villagers' ridicule.
- 2:40Speaker 2: The valley echoed with hammers striking nails and saws biting
- 2:44Speaker 2: into wood. A symphony of determination and despair.
- 2:50Speaker 6: I'm not sure I can endure the ridicule much longer.
- 2:53Speaker 6: And it's only a matter of time before they hurl
- 2:55Speaker 6: more than dung. These people hate us already. And now
- 3:00Speaker 6: we've given them more reasons to be estranged from us.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Ignore them, Jabeth.
- 3:04Speaker 3: If father isn't worked up, then neither am I.
- 3:08Speaker 6: What do you care what they think?
- 3:09Speaker 4: If father's right, they'll all be underwater soon.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Next time they insult me, I'll ask them how good
- 3:13Speaker 1: they are at swimming.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Noah hurled the beam from his shoulders, slamming it onto
- 3:18Speaker 2: the ground with a jarring thud. His eyes, like storm clouds,
- 3:22Speaker 2: turned towards his son's. Fury and sorrow intertwined in his gaze.
- 3:28Speaker 1: You think you're funny, Ham. What about you, Japheth? Do
- 3:32Speaker 1: you find the idea of millions drowning under the weight
- 3:35Speaker 1: of the sky amusing?
- 3:36Speaker 2: The boys fell silent, their faces paling. Their father's nostrils
- 3:42Speaker 2: flared and the creases of his brow deepened with anger.
- 3:45Speaker 1: You laugh now, but I assure you one thing. When
- 3:50Speaker 1: you hear the screams of people as they thrash against mountains,
- 3:53Speaker 1: you won't be laughing.
- 3:55Speaker 4: You'll never laugh again.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Noah stormed off into a grove of fern and pine,
- 4:01Speaker 2: his chest heaving with the weight of unspoken fears. He
- 4:05Speaker 2: glanced at his hands, which trembled with anxiety.
- 4:09Speaker 3: How will I endure this? In seven days' time, the
- 4:13Speaker 3: waters will come. For forty days, the heavens and the
- 4:18Speaker 3: earth shall weep. Their tears will drown all life from
- 4:24Speaker 3: the ground.
- 4:26Speaker 4: I don't know if I'll be able to bear it.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Who am I to carry this responsibility?
- 4:32Speaker 3: You are righteous, Noah. You are set apart in this generation.
- 4:38Speaker 3: I have appointed you. Now go into the Ark, Noah.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Go with the pairs of animals that I send you.
- 4:47Speaker 3: As you wish.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Noah dragged his feet through the soft earth, grazing a
- 4:52Speaker 2: damp fern with his hands and rubbing the dew on
- 4:55Speaker 2: his neck. He sighed, stepping into a patch of sunlight
- 4:59Speaker 2: piercing the storm clouds. Noah gazed at the Ark, a
- 5:03Speaker 2: towering monolith against the sky, its shadow stretching over the valley.
- 5:08Speaker 2: He watched his sons, no longer boys but men, bound
- 5:11Speaker 2: by duty and the promise of future generations, saw, chop,
- 5:16Speaker 2: hammer and sand the vessel's final touches. They still hadn't
- 5:20Speaker 2: grasped what Noah felt deep in his bones. This calling
- 5:24Speaker 2: was a curse as much as a blessing. Noah steadied
- 5:27Speaker 2: his trembling hands and drew a deep breath. Before he
- 5:31Speaker 2: could take another step, a massive hand gripped his shoulder.
- 5:35Speaker 2: It was the Tanner, his face contorted with rage and confusion.
- 5:39Speaker 2: He shoved Noah against the trunk of a dying tree.
- 5:42Speaker 5: What's your play, son of Seth? What's the point of
- 5:46Speaker 5: having a boat in the middle of the valley?
- 5:51Speaker 1: It's for the coming flood. Soon the skies will burst
- 5:55Speaker 1: forth with water, and the earth will open up.
- 6:00Speaker 5: I have swine with sharper minds than you. You expect
- 6:05Speaker 5: me to believe the sky's gonna open up like a river?
- 6:10Speaker 5: You're a madman!
- 6:13Speaker 2: The tanner drew out a blade and pressed it against
- 6:15Speaker 2: Noah's throat.
- 6:17Speaker 5: You got a lot of resources to make a boat
- 6:21Speaker 5: this big.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Hey, maybe they'd be better.
- 6:25Speaker 5: Off with someone who still has his.
- 6:27Speaker 4: Wits about him. All I have has been given by
- 6:30Speaker 4: the Creator. You'd rob from him.
- 6:34Speaker 5: I do what I want to whom I want, son
- 6:38Speaker 5: of Seth. You live by rules nobody else does. That's
- 6:44Speaker 5: your weakness. It's why you spend your days with sawdust
- 6:48Speaker 5: in your.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Throat instead of a good mead.
- 6:51Speaker 2: The tanner pressed the edge of the blade further into
- 6:54Speaker 2: Noah's skin. A crimson streak dripped down his neck and
- 6:58Speaker 2: onto his collarbone. Just then, the ground began to shake.
- 7:02Speaker 2: The tanner stepped back and turned. In an instant, the
- 7:05Speaker 2: man was trampled by a large beast bursting from the forest.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Its legs were larger than tree trunks, with ivory tusks
- 7:13Speaker 2: curling upward. Noah ran beside the beast and out of
- 7:16Speaker 2: the tree covering. His eyes widened to behold thousands of
- 7:21Speaker 2: animals galloping, crawling, flying and stalking toward the ark. Noah
- 7:26Speaker 2: pressed his hands on his head in disbelief. He shouted
- 7:29Speaker 2: to his sons, Shem!
- 7:31Speaker 1: Japheth! Open the ark's door! Ham, get our wives and
- 7:35Speaker 1: tell them to gather the sheaves of hay.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Noah sprinted alongside two gazelles, leaping over lumber and sliding
- 7:42Speaker 2: to the ropes beside the ark. He pulled with Shem
- 7:46Speaker 2: and Japheth, heaving to open the large door for the
- 7:49Speaker 2: incoming animals.
- 7:50Speaker 3: Thousands of creatures.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Two by two, ran into the ark, their hooves, paws
- 7:55Speaker 2: and claws thumping and scratching against the ark's floor.
- 8:00Speaker 3: How do they.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Know where to go? You know the answer to that, Shem.
- 8:04Speaker 3: They're following the Creator's command. Just like us.
- 8:09Speaker 2: A flash of lightning split the skies, followed by a
- 8:13Speaker 2: crack of thunder. Noah's gaze turned intense as he watched
- 8:17Speaker 2: the clouds churn like deep, chaotic waters. He looked back
- 8:21Speaker 2: at the forest where the Tanner lay. This was just
- 8:24Speaker 2: the beginning. Soon, everyone outside the Ark would perish. The
- 8:32Speaker 2: earth was still. The birds had flown away, and the
- 8:36Speaker 2: beasts had fled to their burrows. They knew what the
- 8:40Speaker 2: city did not. A storm was coming to claim them.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Noah and Emzara stood atop a cliff, the wind tugging
- 8:49Speaker 2: at their garments like the persistent whispers of the doomed.
- 8:52Speaker 2: To their left, the ark stood, complete and filled with
- 8:56Speaker 2: creatures of all kinds, a lifeboat amidst an ocean of inevitability.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Lights flickered from within, torches lit by their children as
- 9:06Speaker 2: they tended to the animals. To the right, the city
- 9:09Speaker 2: was aglow with bonfires, the faint sounds of laughter and
- 9:13Speaker 2: screams echoing through the breeze, a cacophony of ignorance and defiance.
- 9:19Speaker 4: This world is sick. These people are plagued by evil.
- 9:26Speaker 4: I know what they deserve, but I can't bring myself
- 9:30Speaker 4: to fully accept it.
- 9:33Speaker 1: They're all going to die.
- 9:36Speaker 5: I find some solace in knowing our children will at
- 9:40Speaker 5: least be safe.
- 9:41Speaker 1: But what about the other children? What of those who
- 9:45Speaker 1: haven't done anything wrong?
- 9:47Speaker 2: Noah's voice cracked like thin ice. His heart was breaking
- 9:52Speaker 2: piece by piece. He gazed out at the horizon where
- 9:56Speaker 2: the sun had not been seen in a week.
- 9:59Speaker 3: Its light fainted.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Dimly illuminating the storm clouds before sinking past the valley.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Emzara squeezed his hand, her voice a soothing balm to
- 10:09Speaker 2: his wounded soul.
- 10:11Speaker 5: You've walked with God this far. Continue your stride and
- 10:15Speaker 5: don't look back.
- 10:17Speaker 4: Tonight I will walk into that ark.
- 10:21Speaker 1: I fear I will not be the man I was.
- 10:23Speaker 3: When I walk out.
- 10:25Speaker 5: Nothing will be the same. You, me, the world.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Everything will be new. Flashes of lightning replaced the sun's light,
- 10:35Speaker 2: and thunder roared like a predator ready to kill. The
- 10:39Speaker 2: voice of the creator spoke through the tempest.
- 10:42Speaker 3: To the Ark, Noah.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Noah and Emzara scaled down the cliff back to the Ark.
- 10:48Speaker 2: As they strode, the skies opened and rain descended upon
- 10:52Speaker 2: the land. The rain grew heavier with each moment, softening
- 10:56Speaker 2: the earth below. The two quickened their pace when the
- 10:59Speaker 2: ground began to quake. They were only a few paces
- 11:02Speaker 2: from the ark when the ground burst open with geysers
- 11:05Speaker 2: of rushing water. Emzara flew backward while Noah was caught
- 11:09Speaker 2: in a torrent of water cascading from above and bursting
- 11:13Speaker 2: from below. Noah, help me!
- 11:16Speaker 5: Hold on!
- 11:17Speaker 2: Noah gripped a stone with his arms and pulled himself up.
- 11:21Speaker 2: He scammed the rushing water for signs of his wife.
- 11:24Speaker 2: His eyes darted back and forth, desperately trying to see
- 11:27Speaker 2: through the rain. Finally, he spotted her hanging onto a
- 11:30Speaker 2: pine branch. Noah forced his way through the torrent, driving
- 11:35Speaker 2: his feet through the rushing water and picked her up.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Japheth stood at the ark's entrance, reaching out. He took
- 11:41Speaker 2: his mother and pointed out to the valley.
- 11:43Speaker 5: Father!
- 11:44Speaker 1: Ham and Shem are missing!
- 11:46Speaker 5: What?
- 11:47Speaker 1: Where could they be?
- 11:48Speaker 6: Anwar was returning from the city, and Shem went looking
- 11:51Speaker 6: for him when the waters began to fall.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Stay here with the others.
- 11:56Speaker 2: Noah leaped from stone to stone, avoiding the rushing waters beneath.
- 12:00Speaker 2: He reached the hill, sloping upward into the forest. The
- 12:03Speaker 2: rains were relentless, falling like arrows on Noah's back. The
- 12:07Speaker 2: earth trembled underfoot. All around, water erupted from below. Noah
- 12:13Speaker 2: looked up to the mountains, where falls tumbled violently, swelling
- 12:17Speaker 2: rivers with mighty force.
- 12:19Speaker 5: Ham!
- 12:19Speaker 3: Shem!
- 12:23Speaker 1: Where are those foolish boys?
- 12:26Speaker 5: Father!
- 12:27Speaker 2: Noah saw Ham and Shem running with their hands tied
- 12:30Speaker 2: behind their backs. A mob of men pursued them from behind.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Shem leaped over a stone, but Ham's feet were immediately
- 12:37Speaker 2: caught on the root. Ham looked back at his pursuers
- 12:40Speaker 2: and braced for their attacks, but before they could lay
- 12:42Speaker 2: a handle him, another giza burst before them, sending each
- 12:46Speaker 2: of them tumbling down the hills. Noah helped his boys
- 12:49Speaker 2: to their feet and unbound them. The three dodged rolling
- 12:53Speaker 2: stones and falling trees, eventually reaching the ark's entrance. Men
- 12:58Speaker 2: from the city marched through the rapids with spears in hand,
- 13:01Speaker 2: prepared to strike them down and commandeer the ship.
- 13:04Speaker 3: But before they could, Noah heard the creaking of the wood.
- 13:08Speaker 3: A mighty wind blew, raising.
- 13:10Speaker 2: The ark's door and slamming it shut. Noah ran to
- 13:14Speaker 2: the door and pounded his fists against it. His shouts
- 13:17Speaker 2: were surprising to the others.
- 13:19Speaker 5: What's wrong?
- 13:20Speaker 1: We made it! Exactly, Ham. We made it. Everyone else
- 13:25Speaker 1: is either dead or dying as we speak. They didn't
- 13:29Speaker 1: care about us. Seconds ago, they were trying to skewer
- 13:33Speaker 1: us and steal the ark. Why are you so upset?
- 13:36Speaker 1: Where's your soul? Listen closely. Everyone, listen.
- 13:44Speaker 2: Underneath the white noise of falling rain and rushing water,
- 13:48Speaker 2: the screams became audible. Desperate, blood-curdling screams.
- 13:54Speaker 4: If you don't weep at their suffering, you'd know better
- 13:58Speaker 4: than them.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Silence fell among them. The sound of animals braying and
- 14:04Speaker 2: purring mingled with the rain and wind. Emzara threw a
- 14:08Speaker 2: blanket over Noah's shoulders and led him away. He kept
- 14:12Speaker 2: his gaze fixed on Ham, who scowled back, then turned
- 14:16Speaker 2: to his brothers, who wore concerned expressions. Outside, the skies
- 14:22Speaker 2: wept and the earth quivered. God's wrath poured forth, but
- 14:27Speaker 2: it did not please him. He sent the flood with
- 14:31Speaker 2: regret and sorrow. The waters prevailed over the earth, and
- 14:35Speaker 2: the seas swallowed every creature given the breath of life.
- 14:39Speaker 2: It rained for forty days. Streams turned to rapids, which
- 14:44Speaker 2: turned to seas. They rose above the mountains, lifting the
- 14:48Speaker 2: ark with them. The ark floated over the massacre. In
- 14:52Speaker 2: a sea of judgment, Noah was spared. When the forty
- 14:57Speaker 2: days of rain had ceased, and the sun's rays gently
- 15:01Speaker 2: peeked through the dissipating clouds, Noah opened one of the windows.
- 15:06Speaker 2: He looked out, seeing a vast expanse of nothingness. Choppy, dark,
- 15:12Speaker 2: and unruly waters stretched as far as the eye could see.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Floating on the surface were remnants of desolation.
- 15:22Speaker 3: Everyone had perished.
