- 0:00Speaker 1: Oh my gosh.
- 0:01Speaker 2: All right, this is a bramble Jam podcast.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Welcome to Girls Gone Homework, a Homewark review podcast. I'm
- 0:29Speaker 3: Megan and I'm a longtime Homemark fan. I'm Wendy. I'm
- 0:32Speaker 3: a former Hallmark hater. That's everyone's reaction when she says
- 0:38Speaker 3: that today is a very exciting day. As we are joined,
- 0:42Speaker 3: may none other than Christopher Palaha to talk about, among
- 0:44Speaker 3: other things, his epic movie The Christmas Quest. Welcome to
- 0:48Speaker 3: Girls Gone Hamemark.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Hig Girls, how are you.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Thank you for we're being here?
- 0:53Speaker 4: God?
- 0:54Speaker 1: Thank you?
- 0:54Speaker 4: So I'm like sweating a little bit so late. Megan's
- 0:58Speaker 4: gonna ask the bulk of the question because I have
- 1:00Speaker 4: no chill. So when he was like, do you think
- 1:02Speaker 4: he would come on the podcast? I was like, oh,
- 1:04Speaker 4: get hurt.
- 1:05Speaker 1: You might as well ask. We met each other on
- 1:08Speaker 1: the cruise and wh did I say?
- 1:10Speaker 5: You look like a Nordic? What did I say? Like,
- 1:12Speaker 5: Oh my god, remember what I said to you, Megan?
- 1:16Speaker 5: You did yeah, like like like you were blonde, like
- 1:21Speaker 5: dusted with red gold or something. I was like, you
- 1:23Speaker 5: look like a Nordic ice princess or something, Lord Queen.
- 1:28Speaker 3: That I'm impressed that you remember as much as.
- 1:31Speaker 1: H and you looked at me like I can't tell.
- 1:34Speaker 1: And then Wendy, you were shaking the leaf.
- 1:37Speaker 3: It was one of the I was I tell no,
- 1:39Speaker 3: chill at all. Yeah, that was funny.
- 1:41Speaker 4: We talked about that in our in our cabin afterwards,
- 1:45Speaker 4: we were I made an Instagram story about it, but
- 1:47Speaker 4: I don't think I ever published it because I was like, oh,
- 1:49Speaker 4: he just complimented Megan, and then he was like, Wendy,
- 1:52Speaker 4: do better. It's all good.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Think I said, do better. No, I think I just
- 2:01Speaker 1: trying to like let you breathe.
- 2:03Speaker 4: Because you were I was having a moment because we
- 2:07Speaker 4: stumbled upon you in the like buffet area. I just
- 2:12Speaker 4: came around the corner and there you were. It was like,
- 2:14Speaker 4: so weird to see like the celebrities out in the wild. Yeah.
- 2:19Speaker 3: I think going in, we're like, oh, it's okay. We
- 2:21Speaker 3: don't like, we're not gonna fight people for pictures. And
- 2:23Speaker 3: then we come around and went He's like, I don't mind.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Wendy was elbowed in the head by an Overdella's Tyler
- 2:29Speaker 3: Hines fan, so the bands did get wild. What was
- 2:34Speaker 3: your experience like on the cruise, because I think you
- 2:37Speaker 3: did of everyone that you were just out and about
- 2:40Speaker 3: you were meeting the people.
- 2:43Speaker 5: Well, here's the truth of that, Megan, here's the truth.
- 2:46Speaker 5: You sign up for a cruise and you sign up
- 2:50Speaker 5: to meet people, right, and people pay really good money
- 2:56Speaker 5: to get on a cruise to meet there these actors
- 3:00Speaker 5: who are in these movies and they want to like
- 3:02Speaker 5: have these meet and greets. And the one thing I
- 3:05Speaker 5: like about sort of like the Christmas con experience, like
- 3:10Speaker 5: who didn't ask me back this year?
- 3:12Speaker 1: By the way, That's why I'm I was.
- 3:13Speaker 3: Looking and I'm shocked that you're not in that line.
- 3:16Speaker 5: Really West, there was a couple other people like Jonathan
- 3:19Speaker 5: Bennett first wasn't asked for whatever reason, and God bless them.
- 3:22Speaker 5: But it was one of those things where the one thing,
- 3:25Speaker 5: as transactional as it then it's sort of insane or intense,
- 3:29Speaker 5: is that that weekend is.
- 3:32Speaker 1: If you want to just surf the crowd and go
- 3:34Speaker 1: through and meet people really quickly, you can. And it's
- 3:38Speaker 1: really about meeting people and like the.
- 3:41Speaker 5: Lines like if they you can have it, like you
- 3:44Speaker 5: can have a moment and as long as it takes
- 3:47Speaker 5: someone to express, you know, the thing that they want
- 3:49Speaker 5: to express and you can look somebody in the eyes
- 3:51Speaker 5: and it's one on one and it's a really sweet
- 3:54Speaker 5: way to meet the people. And I love, like, I
- 3:56Speaker 5: grew up in the theater, so I did theater, and
- 3:59Speaker 5: I love the idea of a wards.
- 4:00Speaker 1: You have a stage door or you can meet people
- 4:02Speaker 1: would wait for you.
- 4:03Speaker 5: If they really loved what you did, they would stand
- 4:05Speaker 5: there behind the stage.
- 4:06Speaker 1: You're like when you're in high school, like just waiting
- 4:08Speaker 1: out to the bottom.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Of the stage.
- 4:11Speaker 1: You did great, is Henry Higgins and.
- 4:13Speaker 5: You're like, thanks, And there was like as a as
- 4:16Speaker 5: a TV and movie actor, I miss that because I
- 4:19Speaker 5: never get to meet my audience. I never get to
- 4:21Speaker 5: meet the people that I'm entertaining and that I'm literally
- 4:23Speaker 5: doing it for. And so in these instances, that's kind
- 4:27Speaker 5: of like my little window, my little chance to meet people.
- 4:30Speaker 5: And I remember being on the boat we did our
- 4:32Speaker 5: first like sort of group meet. It's eleven actors, and
- 4:37Speaker 5: you know, actors are zany, wild, loud, fun.
- 4:41Speaker 1: People to be around. But you know, in all in all,
- 4:46Speaker 1: good good time and good place for it, you know
- 4:48Speaker 1: what I mean. And I remember looking at the horizon
- 4:51Speaker 1: and I was like, I have four days on this boat.
- 4:54Speaker 5: And if I don't, if I'm up, if I'm locked
- 4:56Speaker 5: up on the fourteenth floor, like you know, like in
- 4:59Speaker 5: our little eye retower, I'm going to go mad. And
- 5:03Speaker 5: so I found this guy, Mike. Mike is was our
- 5:06Speaker 5: security guards, but he's a gay handle or whatever. And
- 5:09Speaker 5: the only reason Mike was was really necessary is because
- 5:12Speaker 5: he became an excellent photographer. So it was easy just
- 5:15Speaker 5: to what people would handed his phone and he'd snap
- 5:18Speaker 5: it and then at which created a sense of flow.
- 5:20Speaker 1: And I looked at Mike and I was about to
- 5:22Speaker 1: go into my little cabin, my little room, which frankly
- 5:26Speaker 1: was they were nice. They put us that was nice, like.
- 5:28Speaker 3: They were nice video. I was like, well, they.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Were like I'm not gonna like it.
- 5:33Speaker 5: They were a little about him, like they were beautiful.
- 5:35Speaker 5: I remember looking. I was like, I can either go
- 5:37Speaker 5: and sort of fall into a sinkhole of you know,
- 5:41Speaker 5: self loathing and why am I here kind of thing,
- 5:44Speaker 5: and and then not and ride that sort of programmed,
- 5:47Speaker 5: scheduled thing that was gonna happen. And so I just
- 5:50Speaker 5: like took Mike and I said, dude, I'm itchy, I'm bored.
- 5:52Speaker 5: Do you want to walk around the boat with me
- 5:54Speaker 5: because I want to see the boat, I want to
- 5:55Speaker 5: see what spit him on, and be I want to
- 5:57Speaker 5: go meet some people and he's like okay, So we
- 6:01Speaker 5: went and that first one was just like I think
- 6:04Speaker 5: it was when I met you, guys?
- 6:05Speaker 1: Was that first? Wasn't it the first day? Wasn't that first?
- 6:08Speaker 3: It was the first full day? Yeah, okay you guys.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Okay, so maybe yeah, I don't know, I feel like
- 6:14Speaker 1: I met you.
- 6:16Speaker 3: It was definitely like.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Was it when we left the poor.
- 6:19Speaker 3: No, because we Wendy had a horrific travel experience and
- 6:23Speaker 3: so Tuesday was like we were literally it took her
- 6:27Speaker 3: twenty seven hours to get there from LA, so Tuesday
- 6:32Speaker 3: didn't exist for us, like we started fresh and running
- 6:35Speaker 3: into you Wednesday morning kind of was like that, all right,
- 6:38Speaker 3: now we're gonna have a great trip. Like I think
- 6:39Speaker 3: that reset everything.
- 6:43Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, that's right. I heard your I heard your
- 6:45Speaker 5: podcast about how oh it.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Was it was?
- 6:49Speaker 4: It was I slept in DFW airport. Yeah, it was interesting.
- 6:55Speaker 4: I was supposed you didn't turn HERU on the fly home.
- 6:56Speaker 3: I was like, don't leave the airport.
- 6:59Speaker 1: You'll never think of Dallas Fort Worth.
- 7:01Speaker 3: The same, you'll be able to never.
- 7:06Speaker 1: The whole thing that was like my my rezon to people.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Oh gosh, it's too early for French people.
- 7:12Speaker 5: You don't want up talking about the French word for
- 7:15Speaker 5: for the rezons, so whatever the hell out French phrases.
- 7:19Speaker 5: Was getting off and meeting you guys, and like walking
- 7:21Speaker 5: down with Mike and and it was fun, like it
- 7:24Speaker 5: was a cool you know, mostly mostly ordered and yeah,
- 7:29Speaker 5: mostly it was mostly contained.
- 7:32Speaker 3: I bet your fans were very excited to well. I mean,
- 7:35Speaker 3: there was so much talk about how good you were
- 7:37Speaker 3: at it, and I think it did two things. Like one,
- 7:40Speaker 3: it made it so people weren't quite so bonkers in
- 7:43Speaker 3: the limited moments that they might run into you, because
- 7:45Speaker 3: there were so many opportunities. But also like it made
- 7:49Speaker 3: people feel like it was just like special, like running
- 7:52Speaker 3: into someone like that, and you were so lovely to everybody,
- 7:55Speaker 3: and not like they were inconveniencing you like that.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Was they're not you guys. It's never a yeah.
- 8:01Speaker 5: I mean this is honestly, it's like, here's here's what
- 8:03Speaker 5: I'll say about actors. We can harness manic energy, or
- 8:08Speaker 5: we can harness calm energy. And I think when I
- 8:11Speaker 5: moved through the world like usually you see me with
- 8:13Speaker 5: my wife and my kids, and it's like there's a
- 8:15Speaker 5: thing of.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Like I don't really want to bother them because he's
- 8:17Speaker 1: with his.
- 8:17Speaker 5: Family and so so there's a there's a way I
- 8:20Speaker 5: think as an actor and moved through the world.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Where you can keep things calm for people.
- 8:25Speaker 5: And then there's actors who are like, there's a there's
- 8:28Speaker 5: a bit of it. They want a frenzy, they want
- 8:29Speaker 5: to stir up a little, you know, And there's a
- 8:32Speaker 5: way to move through the world where oh you got
- 8:34Speaker 5: to catch at the tiger White, like it's a thing
- 8:36Speaker 5: and it created So I don't I've deliberately spent my
- 8:39Speaker 5: life trying to just be apperpolated.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Just we're all people.
- 8:44Speaker 5: We're literally qualtious people moving through the world together. I
- 8:47Speaker 5: happen to work on TV, which is really funny because
- 8:51Speaker 5: my kid the other night we were watching we did
- 8:52Speaker 5: watch Christmas Quest together in the hotel in Kansas City,
- 8:55Speaker 5: and it's the first time I've watched the movie on
- 8:57Speaker 5: on the actual.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Network on oh yeah, in like five.
- 9:01Speaker 5: Years, and so to see the commercials was really lovely
- 9:05Speaker 5: and to see how Burger King and how Nissan like
- 9:08Speaker 5: did whole story, you know, like segment commercials, and but
- 9:12Speaker 5: Caleb was like, that's weird. He's like, you're my dad
- 9:14Speaker 5: and you're on TV. He's like, not a lot of
- 9:16Speaker 5: people get to say that. So while it's a cool thing,
- 9:19Speaker 5: it's also just the thing. It's how I make my living.
- 9:22Speaker 5: And I think that I don't know, I think.
- 9:26Speaker 3: That's the right perspective. I mean, like you have a
- 9:29Speaker 3: very visible job, more people know you.
- 9:32Speaker 5: Yeah, And I say that because you know, on the
- 9:34Speaker 5: boat or in Kansas City, you wouldn't think that it's
- 9:37Speaker 5: just a job. Based on some of the responses, Yes,
- 9:40Speaker 5: it gets a little crazy.
- 9:41Speaker 3: I agree. I agree it's a little unbalancing a little bit.
- 9:46Speaker 4: Would you go back on the on like for next
- 9:49Speaker 4: year if they while they are having another cruise, If
- 9:52Speaker 4: you're asked, will you go.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Back Yeah, to answer your question, yes, I.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Mean the cruise I think is harder, Like there's all
- 9:58Speaker 3: these you just back from the Kansas fan experience. You know,
- 10:01Speaker 3: you did the bus situation, but the cruise is hard
- 10:04Speaker 3: because it's five days and you're there, like you can't
- 10:06Speaker 3: come in and you can't come out. You can't like
- 10:09Speaker 3: your family can't come in and see you for a day.
- 10:12Speaker 3: I mean, I know people traveled with like spouses or children,
- 10:14Speaker 3: but I think it's a huge ask. And I remember
- 10:18Speaker 3: when the cruise was being planned and the Facebook group
- 10:20Speaker 3: people were growing many, and I was like, who's coming,
- 10:22Speaker 3: Who's coming? And I was like, I think you guys
- 10:24Speaker 3: need to like adjust your expectations of the planning of
- 10:28Speaker 3: this because it's a bigger thing, being trapped on a boat,
- 10:32Speaker 3: and it's a bigger ask.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Right, It's a bigger thing. Yeah, yeah, But I mean
- 10:36Speaker 1: it's fun, Like I actually enjoyed. I did like, I
- 10:40Speaker 1: had fun. It was a cool So yeah, I would
- 10:43Speaker 1: do it again if asked.
- 10:44Speaker 3: We got to talk quest which uh spoiler alert, we
- 10:49Speaker 3: loved so much. It's so great. My only wish for
- 10:52Speaker 3: the movie is that it got more promotion, like being
- 10:56Speaker 3: in a weekend with so many movies. But we love it.
- 11:00Speaker 3: This is your first time. We know you had like
- 11:02Speaker 3: a brief appearance with Lacey in hall at the Hallway,
- 11:05Speaker 3: but this is your first time co co starr and
- 11:08Speaker 3: co leading with Lacey. What was that experience?
- 11:10Speaker 1: Like, she's awesome.
- 11:11Speaker 5: She is Lacey Shabt is the goat of holiday Christmas movies,
- 11:18Speaker 5: and she's the goat for a reason. She is so
- 11:20Speaker 5: kind and she is so professional, and she is she
- 11:23Speaker 5: does this weird thing that's almost impossible to.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Because it's her nature.
- 11:29Speaker 5: It's how sweet she is and who she is and
- 11:30Speaker 5: where she's from. But it's like there's this innocence and
- 11:34Speaker 5: so as she's delivering lines, there's a purity with which
- 11:38Speaker 5: it's coming out of and so you can't she's not
- 11:41Speaker 5: faking it. So how decent she is to people and how.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Aware she is of her crew and her surroundings, and
- 11:48Speaker 1: she's a collaborator, and I'm somebody who you know when
- 11:50Speaker 1: you're on set. It really is the best idea whens.
- 11:53Speaker 5: And if you're somebody who comes to the table with
- 11:56Speaker 5: a ton of ideas and you're going to be one
- 11:59Speaker 5: of two ways. It's either like, this is my idea
- 12:01Speaker 5: and this is how it's gonna happen and I'm not
- 12:02Speaker 5: happy as that happens, or.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Hey, guys, what do you think about this? And what
- 12:06Speaker 1: about this? And how about this?
- 12:07Speaker 5: And best Idea wins and Lacy was like we had
- 12:11Speaker 5: so much fun, and then we had a great director,
- 12:15Speaker 5: Dustin ker who is who directed Bill More Christmas line
- 12:20Speaker 5: or he did direct Bill More Christmas. Synthetic Cinema produced it.
- 12:26Speaker 5: So Dustin, Andrew and Molly were in charge of Scottish
- 12:31Speaker 5: America Scottish Christmas last year and built More Christmas, the
- 12:35Speaker 5: Holiday Tuddy movie this year the Mine and then that
- 12:39Speaker 5: finish Line movie.
- 12:40Speaker 1: So they had a huge weekend this weekend.
- 12:42Speaker 5: Yeah, they had a big, big weekend, which is fun
- 12:45Speaker 5: to see and very proud because I mean it's an
- 12:47Speaker 5: awesome production company working on our Connecticut and so when
- 12:51Speaker 5: you have the right team, than anything is possible.
- 12:55Speaker 1: And yeah, it was a fun, big movie.
- 12:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean that's a film on location, and we
- 13:00Speaker 3: saw that you were able to bring your family out
- 13:02Speaker 3: at least for part of it.
- 13:03Speaker 4: How often do you get to do that? How important
- 13:05Speaker 4: it is for you to have that opportunity.
- 13:06Speaker 5: Well, when I go on a really cool location, I
- 13:09Speaker 5: will bring them.
- 13:11Speaker 1: I'll bring them just.
- 13:14Speaker 5: You know, hello, high Water be Like they came to
- 13:16Speaker 5: Fiji with me, they came to Iceland with me, and
- 13:20Speaker 5: in my life, like Caleb was born in Hawaii when
- 13:22Speaker 5: I was working on North Shore and they went to
- 13:24Speaker 5: Heights School up in Vancouver.
- 13:26Speaker 1: They went to school in New York.
- 13:27Speaker 5: City, Like wherever I have jobs, they'll just come with me.
- 13:31Speaker 5: And that got harder and harder and more difficult the
- 13:33Speaker 5: older that they got. Oviously sure, yeah, but but for
- 13:38Speaker 5: like a place like Iceland.
- 13:40Speaker 1: You know, it's interesting. My wife's not to bring them
- 13:43Speaker 1: show down guys. Sorry, Wendy might like this though. Oh stop,
- 13:49Speaker 1: go ahead, I just get to pick on Wendy.
- 13:53Speaker 3: Everybody does.
- 13:53Speaker 1: It's okay, no, it's out of love.
- 13:56Speaker 5: So my father in law, my wife's dad, died in
- 13:59Speaker 5: twenty eight teen, and Hallmark like a month later hired
- 14:05Speaker 5: me to go to icad to Fiji and film Pearl
- 14:08Speaker 5: and Paradise, And so that was this really kind of
- 14:13Speaker 5: interesting way to squeegee out the grief. It was just
- 14:18Speaker 5: a momentary like ringing of the grief for the family
- 14:21Speaker 5: and for Julianne. But going somewhere that far away and
- 14:26Speaker 5: going somewhere.
- 14:27Speaker 1: That new and on an island.
- 14:31Speaker 5: Was this interesting time stamp for us as a family
- 14:34Speaker 5: in that particular moment. And then this year was a
- 14:37Speaker 5: particularly hard year because she lost her mom. And then
- 14:42Speaker 5: a month later they hired me to go to Iceland,
- 14:45Speaker 5: and so it was the same thing where we went
- 14:46Speaker 5: to this other island, polar opposites of Fiji in color, temperature, food, people, everything,
- 14:53Speaker 5: total opposites. But it was the same thing of like
- 14:56Speaker 5: a new place and all these new experiences that were
- 14:59Speaker 5: really kind of help us like scleegee out the grief
- 15:02Speaker 5: and like ring out the grief a little bit, and
- 15:04Speaker 5: then God works in mysterious ways. And so it was
- 15:06Speaker 5: a really cool, super grateful for those opportunities because they
- 15:09Speaker 5: did more than just we It was more than just
- 15:12Speaker 5: making a movie. It was you know, bringing my family
- 15:14Speaker 5: somewhere and allowing us to have a beat from some
- 15:17Speaker 5: pretty painful moments.
- 15:18Speaker 1: And so, you know, doublely beautiful in ways.
- 15:22Speaker 3: Yeah, not just a vacation, right, Like building positive associations
- 15:27Speaker 3: in that that's really hard. I'm sorry for your wife.
- 15:29Speaker 3: We do have a recurring segment on the podcast called
- 15:32Speaker 3: did you see that? And we it's where we point
- 15:34Speaker 3: out things people may have missed, and for example, Holiday
- 15:37Speaker 3: touchdown the Marquee behind in the town square had like
- 15:40Speaker 3: a Tyler Hines movie, a Julie Sherman Wolfe maybe in
- 15:42Speaker 3: a Hunter King movie on the Marquie thinking about Christmas quest,
- 15:46Speaker 3: is there anything you can think about that people might
- 15:48Speaker 3: not have clocked on first watch or something cool that
- 15:51Speaker 3: you think people should look out for it.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Well, you mentioned the cameo that I did with Lacy. Yeah,
- 15:58Speaker 1: when the phone rings, there's a.
- 16:00Speaker 5: Photograph that shows up with Lacey and I and that
- 16:03Speaker 5: was a picture that I took while I was in
- 16:06Speaker 5: Utah two years ago or whatever filming All the Hollyday.
- 16:09Speaker 5: It was just and there's a if you look at
- 16:10Speaker 5: the whole picture, it's me, Lacey west Brown and I
- 16:13Speaker 5: think this girl Elizabeth forget who's in the original picture.
- 16:17Speaker 1: But yeah, that's that's kind of the little East trade
- 16:19Speaker 1: from that.
- 16:20Speaker 3: So that was like so funny, that's huge picture. Did
- 16:22Speaker 3: you say that? Amazing? So, look, this is not the
- 16:25Speaker 3: first time you've played a character whose marriage is either
- 16:28Speaker 3: end it has ended, or is in trouble. We really
- 16:31Speaker 3: loved We wish you a married Christmas. You know, like
- 16:34Speaker 3: we're women who are past like the first love, young love,
- 16:37Speaker 3: stages of life and married a million years and so
- 16:40Speaker 3: for us, we like seeing those stories reflected. How important
- 16:43Speaker 3: is it for you to be able to tell that
- 16:45Speaker 3: kind of story?
- 16:46Speaker 1: Well, I think, I mean, I'm not.
- 16:48Speaker 5: I don't, I don't I'm not on the executive level
- 16:50Speaker 5: at Hallmark obviously, But if I'm programming, if I'm doing
- 16:54Speaker 5: their programming, I'm not going to kew two year and
- 16:59Speaker 5: make movies for twenty year olds, because I'll.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Make a couple, you know what I mean. But the
- 17:04Speaker 1: bulk and the mean potatoes of why I think people
- 17:07Speaker 1: love these movies, It's about the love that lasts a lifetime.
- 17:10Speaker 1: It's about like meeting that person that you're like, bo, God,
- 17:13Speaker 1: this isn't just the hot hookup that I'm going to
- 17:15Speaker 1: like move on from next week. This is like the
- 17:17Speaker 1: first small wort spin. There is my life with and
- 17:20Speaker 1: that happens in your.
- 17:21Speaker 5: Thirties, and it happens in your forties, Like there's a
- 17:23Speaker 5: chapter of your life where you're hoping for that to happen.
- 17:28Speaker 1: In late twenties. I mean, like it happens, right, but
- 17:31Speaker 1: it so.
- 17:31Speaker 5: I think that it's fascinating and I think like Lacy
- 17:34Speaker 5: and I were talking about it, and she's like, man,
- 17:36Speaker 5: there are so many stories that I want to tell about,
- 17:38Speaker 5: you know.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Nicky and I, Niki.
- 17:40Speaker 5: Delosch and I are working on something for next Christmas
- 17:44Speaker 5: about this particular moment in a woman's life who's chosen
- 17:48Speaker 5: to give up her career to raise kids, and what
- 17:51Speaker 5: does that look like when they don't need her like
- 17:53Speaker 5: they do in their babies, And what is that transitional
- 17:57Speaker 5: period of like, well, who am I now that I've
- 18:00Speaker 5: you know, the babies are gone and they don't need me.
- 18:03Speaker 4: Like you're hitting us, Like right where Megan has a
- 18:06Speaker 4: senior in high school this year, I have a junior
- 18:09Speaker 4: in high school. Like we're in that phase, that transitional
- 18:13Speaker 4: kind of phase, just hitting hard.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Yeah, well you know what, you guys are gonna love
- 18:17Speaker 1: this even more. It was my wife's idea.
- 18:19Speaker 3: Oh I love that.
- 18:23Speaker 4: I mean, you did send your first child to college
- 18:26Speaker 4: last year, and as Wendy said, like, we're on the
- 18:28Speaker 4: verge of that life like you're We have a friend
- 18:31Speaker 4: who their youngest son is about to go to college
- 18:33Speaker 4: and I was like, oh, are you like and he
- 18:35Speaker 4: was like, oh no, we're not empty nesters.
- 18:37Speaker 3: We're bird launchers. And I was like, oh, I love
- 18:39Speaker 3: that perspective. I'm not I'm not going to be strong
- 18:42Speaker 3: enough to have like that. We're launching them to the
- 18:44Speaker 3: world happily. I'm like, pleats come home to me. But
- 18:48Speaker 3: now that you're an old pro at launching children into
- 18:50Speaker 3: the world. You have advice for people like us.
- 18:55Speaker 1: So we sent our second one to college this year.
- 18:58Speaker 3: Oh my goodness.
- 18:59Speaker 1: Last year are first born. This year was our second,
- 19:02Speaker 1: our middle kid, and now we have Jude at home
- 19:04Speaker 1: and we have him for five more years. Ladies, brace yourselves,
- 19:10Speaker 1: gird your loins because he's going to be the worst.
- 19:15Speaker 1: You're excited and you love it.
- 19:17Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I don't know, maybe you guys are
- 19:18Speaker 5: going to pop champagne and you know, you know, burn up,
- 19:22Speaker 5: burn all the burn all the sweaters and pull out
- 19:25Speaker 5: the level.
- 19:26Speaker 1: I don't know. Some people might be different. But for
- 19:27Speaker 1: me and for Julia, for Julian and I was like.
- 19:30Speaker 5: We we have this tribe and we love our family
- 19:34Speaker 5: and we love time together.
- 19:36Speaker 1: You know.
- 19:36Speaker 5: That was another thing we just in Kansas City. We
- 19:38Speaker 5: all met in the middle of the country and had
- 19:40Speaker 5: Thanksgiving Old City together, and it really was about like,
- 19:44Speaker 5: you know, we did the premiere, the big fancy premiere
- 19:46Speaker 5: on Saturday night, and it was really just about my
- 19:49Speaker 5: family and I, you know, get on that right carpet,
- 19:51Speaker 5: taking a picture and then going off to here and
- 19:53Speaker 5: we didn't watch the movie because we went Caleb was
- 19:55Speaker 5: singing in the town square yeah, like it was about this,
- 19:59Speaker 5: you know, I mean, And honestly, they're the most interesting
- 20:02Speaker 5: things about me.
- 20:03Speaker 1: They're the greatest accomplishment like I could have.
- 20:05Speaker 5: Like I've worked with some pretty amazing actors and some
- 20:08Speaker 5: pretty cool movies, and they're still the most interesting thing
- 20:11Speaker 5: and the best thing I've ever done. Like it's like
- 20:13Speaker 5: the family is, and I think it's who we are,
- 20:16Speaker 5: Like we're people and our people. Our life is really
- 20:19Speaker 5: about people. It's about each other and how we treat
- 20:22Speaker 5: each other. And your family is that moment where you
- 20:27Speaker 5: get to make the decision and you marry, you get
- 20:29Speaker 5: to be like, let's try to bring people into the world,
- 20:31Speaker 5: and if you're lucky enough to do that, let's try
- 20:33Speaker 5: to raise them right. And if you're lucky enough to
- 20:34Speaker 5: do that, you want to send them off so that
- 20:37Speaker 5: they can meet people and do that again. And there's
- 20:39Speaker 5: this cycle of like life right and being I don't know,
- 20:44Speaker 5: being we have. It's such a strange culture that we
- 20:47Speaker 5: live in right now because all those fundamental sort of
- 20:52Speaker 5: primary things or up for grabs, I guess, but it's
- 20:55Speaker 5: like it's so wonderful to I don't know, just see
- 20:58Speaker 5: your kids go off and try to make their.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Mark in the world. But it is bittersweet. Yeah.
- 21:07Speaker 5: The reason why I said you were gonna like it
- 21:09Speaker 5: wasn't because it was like all sad.
- 21:11Speaker 1: It was because there was a happy ending in it.
- 21:12Speaker 5: And when I there was something I said, and you
- 21:14Speaker 5: were like about.
- 21:18Speaker 1: The dead parents in laws. No, but there was.
- 21:21Speaker 5: When I was I lived in New York City, I
- 21:23Speaker 5: went to NYU for acting, and I lived in the city.
- 21:26Speaker 5: I lived in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. In fact, when it was
- 21:29Speaker 5: my rent was eight hundred bucks a month, wow.
- 21:32Speaker 1: And I had a walk up apartment.
- 21:34Speaker 5: It was a railroad flat and it had like a
- 21:37Speaker 5: living room with an office off to it in the
- 21:39Speaker 5: bathroom there and then a kitchen and the three rooms
- 21:41Speaker 5: do a walk in closet.
- 21:43Speaker 1: It was old, but it was like amazing.
- 21:45Speaker 5: And it was eight hundred dollars and I was a
- 21:47Speaker 5: waiter and I made about that much money in the
- 21:51Speaker 5: first week and a half of the month. And so
- 21:53Speaker 5: then I was making like, you know, two and a
- 21:55Speaker 5: half weeks worth of just money I could go see
- 21:57Speaker 5: plays with and eating by a cool coat or whatever.
- 22:00Speaker 5: Like it was like this young I was a young
- 22:01Speaker 5: man and I was in New York City and I
- 22:03Speaker 5: was like making my life. It was, I was auditioning
- 22:05Speaker 5: for things. It was kind of perfect. And I painted
- 22:08Speaker 5: the kitchen like ox blood red, which I probably would
- 22:12Speaker 5: never do again, but like, so I had this red kitchen,
- 22:15Speaker 5: but like you know, box blood, and my window looked
- 22:19Speaker 5: out in green Point. It was all of these apartments
- 22:23Speaker 5: around the block, and so the garden. There was a
- 22:25Speaker 5: garden in the middle of all these buildings. So I
- 22:28Speaker 5: looked out onto this garden and each building had its
- 22:31Speaker 5: own little you know, rectangular that different people would take
- 22:34Speaker 5: care of, you know, rectangular.
- 22:36Speaker 1: Gardens, and so and I was on this you know,
- 22:39Speaker 1: walked up to the.
- 22:39Speaker 5: First four so I had a fire escape, and I
- 22:41Speaker 5: could go out and sit on my fire escape and
- 22:43Speaker 5: look out on this sort of mini block of gardens
- 22:46Speaker 5: and watch people.
- 22:47Speaker 1: You know, grow their tomatoes or whatever it was.
- 22:49Speaker 5: And there was a tree next to the window, so
- 22:52Speaker 5: the fire escape and imagine like the kitchen's like a square, right,
- 22:56Speaker 5: so the fire escapes here, and there was a window
- 22:57Speaker 5: that looked out and the trews here, and there was
- 22:59Speaker 5: this bird bird in a nest and it was a
- 23:02Speaker 5: baby bird, and the baby bird was terrified of getting
- 23:06Speaker 5: out of that nest like she just was like or
- 23:08Speaker 5: he was like flapping.
- 23:09Speaker 1: As little her little wings whatever it was, little.
- 23:11Speaker 5: Bird's wings, and it was so excited but so terrified
- 23:16Speaker 5: of this moment of launching into the world. And the
- 23:19Speaker 5: parents of the bird, the bird parents were like flying
- 23:22Speaker 5: around and they'd land on the branches and they'd fly
- 23:24Speaker 5: around and they were like.
- 23:26Speaker 1: Try to get this little bird to go, go, go,
- 23:28Speaker 1: go go. And I watched the whole thing happen. And
- 23:30Speaker 1: then finally this little bird gets.
- 23:31Speaker 5: Up onto the edge of the nest and little legs
- 23:34Speaker 5: are bobbling in the little head and it's just freaking out,
- 23:36Speaker 5: and it said, the wings are going crazy, and it
- 23:38Speaker 5: takes its first flight. It's a leap right onto my
- 23:42Speaker 5: window sill.
- 23:43Speaker 1: So it just goes chip to chip tip, chip chick
- 23:45Speaker 1: and lands on the window sill.
- 23:46Speaker 5: So here I am but twenty one or twenty two
- 23:49Speaker 5: years old, and I'm inches away from this little bird
- 23:53Speaker 5: through the window glass, and I'm sitting here going like that's.
- 23:56Speaker 1: Me, I'm you, You're me, you can do it.
- 24:00Speaker 5: And I watched this bird for another maybe like fifteen minutes,
- 24:03Speaker 5: debate it's fate, and then it launched itself off and
- 24:06Speaker 5: it took flight and it had this awesome little flight
- 24:09Speaker 5: and then it landed back up in the nest and
- 24:11Speaker 5: it was like this victory and to be able to
- 24:12Speaker 5: see that and to be able to have this kind
- 24:14Speaker 5: of metaphor in my life of like, oh that's me.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Like it's terrifying, but you can do it.
- 24:20Speaker 5: So as bittersweet as it is to send your kids
- 24:23Speaker 5: off into the world, and as you know, Mike is
- 24:25Speaker 5: homesick and Caleb goes through these moments of like, ah,
- 24:28Speaker 5: like I just want to be home again, there's also
- 24:30Speaker 5: this really cool thing it's about to happen to your
- 24:32Speaker 5: kids and they will take flight. As nerve wracking as
- 24:35Speaker 5: it is, there's this moment where it's absolutely terrifying, but
- 24:39Speaker 5: then it turns into something special, like look at us.
- 24:42Speaker 1: We're all adults and we're making it in the world.
- 24:44Speaker 1: It's okay, I know.
- 24:46Speaker 3: I Like, on the one hand, we're so excited, like
- 24:48Speaker 3: my husband and I talked like college was one of
- 24:50Speaker 3: the greatest times of our lives, and so we're so
- 24:52Speaker 3: excited for him. And on the other hand, I'm like,
- 24:54Speaker 3: what is he gonna do when he gets sick? Like
- 24:57Speaker 3: little things?
- 25:00Speaker 5: So Caleb you know, Caleb sings, right, and he got
- 25:03Speaker 5: and I promise you it was from a microphone because
- 25:06Speaker 5: we talked about it and he's super honest with us,
- 25:08Speaker 5: but we're like, he got mono nuculosis from singing a microphone.
- 25:12Speaker 5: Oh wow, thinging Frankly, he got so sick and just
- 25:18Speaker 5: like you making.
- 25:18Speaker 1: Julianne was at home being like, I mean I was
- 25:21Speaker 1: looking a nervous breakdown on my phone. What does some
- 25:24Speaker 1: nervous breakdown look like?
- 25:26Speaker 3: Because she was so and like having to stop herself
- 25:30Speaker 3: from flying out there.
- 25:32Speaker 1: Nashville, and I was at the point I was like, go,
- 25:34Speaker 1: you have to go.
- 25:35Speaker 5: But we had all the blood work, we had all
- 25:37Speaker 5: the time we figured out what it was and what
- 25:38Speaker 5: we did, it was able to be Like there was
- 25:39Speaker 5: that three week period of like, you know, panic totally.
- 25:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, it'll be it'll it'll be fine, it'll
- 25:47Speaker 3: be fun.
- 25:48Speaker 1: But you guys, it is and it will be and
- 25:50Speaker 1: it's like it is awesome. But do you only have
- 25:53Speaker 1: the one kid?
- 25:54Speaker 3: Wendy has one, have one, a daughter, she's a junior,
- 25:59Speaker 3: and then I have a freshman daughter as well, so
- 26:01Speaker 3: I have like, you know, a bonus that to kind
- 26:04Speaker 3: of Tide us over for a little bit, uh, but
- 26:08Speaker 3: not very much longer. Yeah, pretty soon it'll be it'll
- 26:11Speaker 3: be just just my husband and I and let me
- 26:16Speaker 3: start a new podcast. Ye can we throw it back
- 26:22Speaker 3: to Mystery one on one? And I'm gonna make a confession.
- 26:24Speaker 3: We have seen the first Mystery one on one and
- 26:26Speaker 3: loved it, but we didn't watch it until like this
- 26:29Speaker 3: series had concluded. That's the series that obviously the fans
- 26:34Speaker 3: super rallied around, and the cancelation devastated the fandom. Wendy
- 26:40Speaker 3: has a like memory, like a steel trap, and she
- 26:42Speaker 3: remembers that. People are like, is there anything that could
- 26:45Speaker 3: come of that? And you posted some cryptic like I'm
- 26:49Speaker 3: working on something. Is there a mystery series in their future?
- 26:55Speaker 3: You made a good point, which was what this morning
- 26:58Speaker 3: You were like, maybe it's quest, maybe it's quiet, Like
- 27:00Speaker 3: maybe that's the homage to the Mystery thing.
- 27:02Speaker 4: Can you remember your comment that I don't know where
- 27:04Speaker 4: it happened at It was like on Facebook or Instagram
- 27:07Speaker 4: and it was the official announcement that Mystery one on
- 27:09Speaker 4: one was canceled, and you were like, I'm working on something.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Yes, it was Twitter, back when Twitter with Twitter.
- 27:16Speaker 3: Oh, okay, can you share anymore? Is there solar project.
- 27:23Speaker 5: Extra extra There is a project and it takes forever
- 27:31Speaker 5: to bring anything of the light of day. Yeah, but
- 27:34Speaker 5: there is a project that I had been working on
- 27:37Speaker 5: that actually, I mean people, you know, the audience knows
- 27:40Speaker 5: knows what it is. It's the orson Hold, which is
- 27:43Speaker 5: a character that I sort of created when I was
- 27:47Speaker 5: felling Mystery One a warm. We were at a book
- 27:50Speaker 5: fair and I was like, interview, amazing is to just
- 27:54Speaker 5: like create a James Bond ten character, be you know,
- 27:57Speaker 5: something that you can that I can that I can
- 27:59Speaker 5: do for the rest of them alive, Like just this
- 28:00Speaker 5: character I can drop into age with and the whole thing.
- 28:04Speaker 5: And started thinking about this fun sort of way to
- 28:07Speaker 5: tell a detective story, and you know, obviously read Agatha
- 28:10Speaker 5: Christie's or the Heder on the Ori Express and.
- 28:17Speaker 1: Was like, you know what would be fun is like
- 28:19Speaker 1: a knives out version of And it's funny because all
- 28:24Speaker 1: of that happened at the same time, like knives Out
- 28:25Speaker 1: that hadn't happened yet. So it was really the genesis
- 28:29Speaker 1: of it was you.
- 28:30Speaker 5: Know, murder or a train and I was going to
- 28:32Speaker 5: be this detected orson Holt and it was going to
- 28:34Speaker 5: be a star studded like a whole star and everyone
- 28:37Speaker 5: was locked on a train and we were gonna, you know,
- 28:40Speaker 5: someone would get murdered and.
- 28:42Speaker 1: We would have to fear out who'd done it. Very
- 28:45Speaker 1: like just flat out ripped off.
- 28:46Speaker 5: Agatha Christie hitched it in twenty nineteen and Randy Pope
- 28:52Speaker 5: was like, there's no way that's gonna happen. It's gonna
- 28:54Speaker 5: be too expensive. And then I said to Randy, and
- 28:58Speaker 5: this is a really this is like a super behind
- 29:01Speaker 5: the curby. Look at how the sausage is made. And
- 29:04Speaker 5: I said to Randy, if I get all the actors
- 29:08Speaker 5: to agree at a price, what if we do block shooting,
- 29:13Speaker 5: So the first group of actors will work on week
- 29:15Speaker 5: one and two, the second group of actors will work
- 29:18Speaker 5: on week two and three, and we'll have everybody for
- 29:22Speaker 5: all scenes that we need in week two. And if
- 29:25Speaker 5: we build it alphabetically and we all make the same
- 29:28Speaker 5: money and it's transparent that we do, can I can
- 29:31Speaker 5: I get the green light?
- 29:32Speaker 1: And Randy Pope said to me, that will never happen.
- 29:35Speaker 5: And I called a bunch of actors and they all
- 29:37Speaker 5: agreed on a price, and I went back to homework
- 29:40Speaker 5: and I said, it will happen, and this is the
- 29:42Speaker 5: price that we could all work for, and like, it
- 29:44Speaker 5: can happen. And then the thing was like, well, no
- 29:47Speaker 5: one wants to see a movie stuck on a train,
- 29:49Speaker 5: And I said, well, we can like have the train
- 29:51Speaker 5: stop somewhere and they can get off and we get back,
- 29:53Speaker 5: or like we could figure that out. And that was
- 29:56Speaker 5: what launched the Wedding Veil series because that then they
- 30:01Speaker 5: knew they had a business model, and that launched Wise
- 30:04Speaker 5: Men and a three Wise Men and a Baby because
- 30:06Speaker 5: they were like, wait, so people are willing.
- 30:07Speaker 1: To not work for their full fee and they'll do
- 30:10Speaker 1: collaborative stuff.
- 30:11Speaker 5: Mcgrum'sman, and so there was a new sort of My
- 30:15Speaker 5: little moment of pride is I didn't get to I
- 30:18Speaker 5: didn't get to make my movie, but I did.
- 30:21Speaker 3: A shrine a hole, launched a thousand franchises.
- 30:24Speaker 1: I launched a thousand franchise.
- 30:25Speaker 5: But no, it was interesting because I think the biggest
- 30:28Speaker 5: question was like, how do we get actors to join
- 30:31Speaker 5: the party without their full pay? And when they realized
- 30:34Speaker 5: that we were willing to like do that, I think
- 30:36Speaker 5: that kind of changed the game a little bit, so
- 30:39Speaker 5: that one in nineteen went away and then it's been
- 30:43Speaker 5: a slow slog.
- 30:44Speaker 1: But Orson is still I'm still pushing Orson up the hill.
- 30:49Speaker 3: Nice. I mean, I look, they made three movies on
- 30:52Speaker 3: a boat on Hallmark plus like the Love on the
- 30:55Speaker 3: Daniel trilogy. They were on that same small boat River Cruise,
- 30:59Speaker 3: Bow and Are the whole time. We were like, we
- 31:02Speaker 3: they spent too much time off the boat. We're like,
- 31:04Speaker 3: we want more boat stuff. So people would watch a trade.
- 31:06Speaker 1: Movie, you think. But they got off the boat right.
- 31:09Speaker 4: They had these beautiful filming locations that they wanted to use, obviously,
- 31:13Speaker 4: which might be more interesting than the interior of the boat.
- 31:16Speaker 5: But I think that, yeah, when you're when you're when
- 31:18Speaker 5: you're making a movie, like we've got to get we
- 31:20Speaker 5: got to show people things because eighty four minutes on
- 31:23Speaker 5: a boat, people are going to go crazy.
- 31:25Speaker 1: But I agree, I'm with you, like, if the story
- 31:27Speaker 1: is interesting and compelling, then you've got something special.
- 31:31Speaker 3: I would absolutely watch a mystery on a train. Ye,
- 31:34Speaker 3: one hundred percent.
- 31:36Speaker 5: Absolutely, it's going to be like at the time, I
- 31:39Speaker 5: have this incredible poster, let me see if I can
- 31:41Speaker 5: find it now.
- 31:43Speaker 1: That's too bad.
- 31:44Speaker 5: But it was a poster of like it was because
- 31:46Speaker 5: at the time it was Cannice, Cameron, Beret and Lacy
- 31:49Speaker 5: and Nicky and Andrew Walker and Tyler and uh it
- 31:53Speaker 5: was going to be it was a really fun thing.
- 31:55Speaker 5: But what's cool about it is, so you know, the
- 31:58Speaker 5: books that I write with you guys are wherever so
- 32:01Speaker 5: moments like where the sunrises. So I was doing a
- 32:04Speaker 5: podcast and the gentlemen that were interviewing us they published
- 32:09Speaker 5: a suspense magazine called Suspense Magazine.
- 32:12Speaker 1: It was like a mysteries and thrillers magazine.
- 32:14Speaker 5: And so while I was on the podcast, I was like,
- 32:16Speaker 5: if I had a short story, would you guys publish it?
- 32:18Speaker 5: And they were like, man, if it's a good we would,
- 32:20Speaker 5: And it's like awesome, I'll send you one. And I
- 32:22Speaker 5: went after the podcast that night and like in a
- 32:25Speaker 5: fever dream, wrote an eighty thousand word short story about
- 32:31Speaker 5: Orson Holt called Lost and Found. You can actually look
- 32:35Speaker 5: it up on Suspense magazine dot com. It's like an
- 32:38Speaker 5: online suspense magazine and they published it in two parts,
- 32:42Speaker 5: so it's an Orson Holt.
- 32:43Speaker 1: So I created the IP.
- 32:44Speaker 5: So now I own this IP that's in the world,
- 32:47Speaker 5: and that was published in twenty twenty and twenty twenty one,
- 32:50Speaker 5: or maybe it was the twenty maybe.
- 32:52Speaker 1: It was just twenty twenty.
- 32:53Speaker 5: I don't know, but anyway, that was published and since
- 32:56Speaker 5: then have written this anthology of short stories. So I
- 33:01Speaker 5: have ten short stories of Wars and Hole, which I'm
- 33:04Speaker 5: either going to do for Audible. I'm going to figure
- 33:05Speaker 5: out something to do with those, but then have taken
- 33:08Speaker 5: and now we're we're trying to do something special with
- 33:11Speaker 5: Orsonhole Pat Homework, and they're interested.
- 33:14Speaker 1: They really love the character.
- 33:16Speaker 5: They want to they want to put me back to
- 33:17Speaker 5: work in another in another mystery.
- 33:20Speaker 1: Because it was it was good medicine Mystery one O
- 33:23Speaker 1: one did its thing.
- 33:25Speaker 3: Yeah, in my mind, I'm like, oh, that could be
- 33:27Speaker 3: an audio podcast, Like, wouldn't it be amazing if you
- 33:29Speaker 3: did get like hall Stars doing the serialized audio for yeah,
- 33:35Speaker 3: that short story series, and you know Hallmark is adapting
- 33:37Speaker 3: those podcasts into series. Got Missletoale murders on on Homark Plus.
- 33:43Speaker 3: Speaking of Homark Plus, they're leaning hard into like reality
- 33:46Speaker 3: programming featuring you know some of their favorite starts. Is
- 33:48Speaker 3: that something you'd ever be interested in? Doing over there,
- 33:51Speaker 3: you know the thing.
- 33:52Speaker 5: Yeah, I actually pitched an idea to them that again,
- 33:56Speaker 5: I don't know that it's the right the right blend.
- 33:59Speaker 1: But so have you guys ever heard of this thing
- 34:01Speaker 1: I do. I used to do it called the Palahasha Taqua.
- 34:04Speaker 3: Yes.
- 34:05Speaker 1: Yeah, So there was this sort of like Sunday Show.
- 34:10Speaker 5: I'd go live for an hour and I would just
- 34:12Speaker 5: talk to people and it was like almost reverse.
- 34:15Speaker 1: I'd be asking Wendy, like, Wendy, tell me about what
- 34:17Speaker 1: it's like to be a mom when we're sploring, and.
- 34:20Speaker 5: Then Wendy would start talking and then all of a sudden,
- 34:22Speaker 5: this thing would happen. And because we're being watched right now,
- 34:26Speaker 5: and so we're on our best behavior and we're sitting,
- 34:28Speaker 5: we're making sure that everything we say is like and
- 34:31Speaker 5: when you were being watched, there's this thing that happened.
- 34:34Speaker 5: Is I like to call them like truth bombs or whatever,
- 34:37Speaker 5: but it's like people all of a sudden, by having
- 34:40Speaker 5: the spotlight shine on them, were able to talk about
- 34:43Speaker 5: things in a way that was really healthy and healing.
- 34:48Speaker 5: And there was some incredible because when we talk right
- 34:52Speaker 5: and I just said this in Kansas City, I just
- 34:55Speaker 5: had the craziest experience. So we were in a panel discussion.
- 34:58Speaker 5: You know, it was about destinations. It was like pretty
- 35:01Speaker 5: glibbed and the superficial, and all of a sudden, this
- 35:05Speaker 5: little woman set up and said, you know, the three
- 35:07Speaker 5: of us just met. We all lost our husbands in December,
- 35:09Speaker 5: and we use Hallmark again to ring out the grief
- 35:13Speaker 5: to like, we use Hallmark to as a balm, and
- 35:17Speaker 5: it really just kind of put a hush over the room,
- 35:20Speaker 5: and it sort of inspired me to to tell this philosophy,
- 35:25Speaker 5: to share this philosophy that I have, which is everything
- 35:28Speaker 5: that we say to each other all day long is
- 35:32Speaker 5: us casting a narrative about who we are, what.
- 35:37Speaker 1: We like, what we don't like, what we believe in,
- 35:39Speaker 1: what we want. So everything we say we're sharing, we're saying,
- 35:43Speaker 1: this is who I am. Get to know me, this
- 35:45Speaker 1: is what I want, this is what I like, this
- 35:46Speaker 1: is why I don't like. This is my story.
- 35:49Speaker 5: So we all have this story, and we're constantly shaping
- 35:52Speaker 5: and reshaping our narrative as the facts of our lives
- 35:56Speaker 5: change and as our circumstances change. We're trying to constantly say, well,
- 35:59Speaker 5: whom It's like a quest for identity, right, and there's this.
- 36:04Speaker 5: It was crazy because as I was sharing this, like
- 36:11Speaker 5: all of a sudden, it just dropped in in the
- 36:14Speaker 5: room in Kansas City and like the front row, it
- 36:17Speaker 5: was all I could see. But they just like started crying.
- 36:20Speaker 5: Everybody started crying.
- 36:22Speaker 1: And so.
- 36:24Speaker 5: That's what was kind of this beautiful thing that would
- 36:28Speaker 5: happen on the Chautauqua was like people would call in
- 36:32Speaker 5: or we would go live and then all of a
- 36:34Speaker 5: sudden it was a story about like one day, it
- 36:36Speaker 5: was about forgiveness, right, it was like what is the
- 36:37Speaker 5: idea for you is? And this girl was twenty two
- 36:39Speaker 5: and she got hippie drank driver. He took her leg
- 36:41Speaker 5: off underneath her knee and she was like, every single day,
- 36:44Speaker 5: like twelve times a day, I have to forgive this person.
- 36:48Speaker 5: And but talking about it in public and talking about
- 36:52Speaker 5: it with a group of people that felt like a
- 36:54Speaker 5: safe space allowed her to like take a step forward
- 36:57Speaker 5: in her forgiveness.
- 36:58Speaker 1: And it was just this weird bubble thing.
- 37:00Speaker 5: Like long story short, I pitched like an on the
- 37:03Speaker 5: road Chautauqua where I would go from like town to
- 37:07Speaker 5: town and hear people's stories and like just meet the audience.
- 37:11Speaker 1: Basically like I just want to meet you. And it
- 37:14Speaker 1: was this idea of and I don't think it's gonna
- 37:15Speaker 1: work because travel shows are i'm told, or expensive and
- 37:19Speaker 1: you have to like give something away and it can't
- 37:22Speaker 1: just be you know truth.
- 37:27Speaker 3: I mean I'm all in. I'm like, oh by that show.
- 37:30Speaker 1: I mean I'm all in too. Like the girls got.
- 37:32Speaker 3: Homart production Company, I'm like, how can we make that happen?
- 37:35Speaker 1: Why don't we do it?
- 37:35Speaker 5: I did a you know, I did a Palaja Taco
- 37:37Speaker 5: Live in Nashville this summer, and that's exactly what it was.
- 37:40Speaker 1: Awesome. It was like a really cool.
- 37:42Speaker 5: It wasn't as like participatory as like the show would be,
- 37:46Speaker 5: because basically I would show up at your house and
- 37:49Speaker 5: I'd be like, tell me your story and we would
- 37:52Speaker 5: get through all of the stuff of like you know,
- 37:54Speaker 5: the chatter stuff. But then at some point like it
- 37:58Speaker 5: would drop in and we would find that thing. And
- 38:00Speaker 5: it's amazing when you start like realizing that you are
- 38:04Speaker 5: part of the human rate, Like here's the thing, this
- 38:06Speaker 5: is our generation, this is all we have.
- 38:08Speaker 1: We have each other, We.
- 38:10Speaker 5: Have these movies, and we have these podcasts, and we
- 38:12Speaker 5: have our friends and our family and our audience, and
- 38:14Speaker 5: we have this like it's our community and it's our generation.
- 38:17Speaker 1: And at some point we're not going to be here anymore.
- 38:19Speaker 1: And so it's really about what we make of it
- 38:21Speaker 1: right now and how.
- 38:22Speaker 5: We're what is the currency that we're using with each
- 38:25Speaker 5: other right now to get along, you know, And I
- 38:28Speaker 5: think when you start to like tap into that, it
- 38:30Speaker 5: becomes this really beautiful I mean, that's what's fun about
- 38:34Speaker 5: the Kansas City and the boat and like meaning you guys. Again,
- 38:38Speaker 5: it's so brief, but even in those little brief moments,
- 38:42Speaker 5: those exchanges.
- 38:43Speaker 1: Are really wonderful. Like here's a really bizarre thing. People
- 38:47Speaker 1: are either going to like this or not like it.
- 38:48Speaker 5: But like I literally pray for people when I'm when
- 38:51Speaker 5: I'm taking my picture with them nice Like I literally
- 38:54Speaker 5: just sit there with my hand on them and like
- 38:56Speaker 5: just pray for them. It's such an easy, like you
- 39:00Speaker 5: know what I mean, like easy little thing to do.
- 39:03Speaker 3: I think what's really interesting about you is that you're
- 39:05Speaker 3: genuinely curious about people. And I think I'm making that
- 39:09Speaker 3: statement about you, so correct me if I'm wrong, But
- 39:12Speaker 3: that's how it comes across, Like you're genuinely curious and
- 39:15Speaker 3: genuinely interested. That's not something that you can affect over
- 39:20Speaker 3: the long term, Like you can't fake it. And I
- 39:23Speaker 3: think that's why people like you.
- 39:25Speaker 4: I mean, you're incredibly talented. I will die on the
- 39:28Speaker 4: hill that your Scrooge scene in Ad Dickens of a
- 39:31Speaker 4: Holiday is the greatest thing I've ever seen in a
- 39:34Speaker 4: Christmas movie. It is one of the greatest holiday scenes ever.
- 39:38Speaker 4: So it's just cool that you're a cool person too.
- 39:41Speaker 4: So we super appreciate you sitting here with us this morning.
- 39:46Speaker 4: I know you've had an insane travel promotion schedule over
- 39:50Speaker 4: the last two months, but thank you for taking the
- 39:53Speaker 4: time to be here. And why don't you tell people
- 39:55Speaker 4: where they can find you to keep up with you.
- 39:56Speaker 5: You can find me on Instagram. I'm at Palaha And
- 40:03Speaker 5: then that's kind of really all. That's what it's really
- 40:05Speaker 5: where I interact the most. I think there's some Facebook
- 40:08Speaker 5: stuff where there's it's like there's the whatever we're calling.
- 40:11Speaker 1: What is Twitter? What is it? Now?
- 40:13Speaker 3: Yeah? X now, I refuse, I refuse. This old dog
- 40:17Speaker 3: cannot learn a new director.
- 40:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm on that like very rarely, I rarely rarely go. Yeah,
- 40:22Speaker 1: but I will say this.
- 40:23Speaker 5: I'm gonna plug a movie that's coming out next year.
- 40:26Speaker 5: I directed, I produced, and directed a movie called Mimics.
- 40:30Speaker 5: It's m I CS Mimics about a guy who's a
- 40:35Speaker 5: comedian not doing too great, gets this mysterious invitation to
- 40:40Speaker 5: join an elite society.
- 40:42Speaker 1: Can only has to do.
- 40:43Speaker 5: His sign, and he takes it, and all of a
- 40:46Speaker 5: sudden things start happening, and the things are no bueno.
- 40:50Speaker 5: They're good at first, of course, they're amazing at first,
- 40:53Speaker 5: but there's a price.
- 40:55Speaker 1: And I act in it.
- 40:57Speaker 5: So it's my it's my directorial debut as a feature
- 41:00Speaker 5: film directorial debut, and I'm super proud of it. I
- 41:04Speaker 5: shot it in my hometown of Reno, Nevada. We have
- 41:07Speaker 5: a distributor, we're gonna have a theatrical release, and we're
- 41:10Speaker 5: aiming for September. We're looking it's either going to be
- 41:15Speaker 5: we're rather going to do the like beginning of Q two,
- 41:18Speaker 5: or I think we're going to aim for that September,
- 41:21Speaker 5: like when when your kid's going off to college.
- 41:23Speaker 3: Actually, yeah, we'll need a distraction.
- 41:25Speaker 1: We'll be able to go see this movie. Yeah.
- 41:29Speaker 5: Yeah, And it's something I'm really really proud of. Across
- 41:32Speaker 5: the board just because you know, I literally raised the
- 41:35Speaker 5: money and pretty I mean, it was like this huge
- 41:39Speaker 5: labor of love and again being able to go home
- 41:42Speaker 5: where it all started. And this dream began thirty years ago.
- 41:46Speaker 5: I remember watching Quentin Tarantina's pulp Fiction.
- 41:49Speaker 1: I was like, I want to make movies like I
- 41:50Speaker 1: want to do that.
- 41:51Speaker 5: And it's why I went to n Yu and it's
- 41:52Speaker 5: why I do what I do because I eventually I
- 41:55Speaker 5: wanted to be able to tell the whole story.
- 41:57Speaker 1: And so let's see how Let's see what happens.
- 41:59Speaker 5: Maybe you guys, and maybe people will hate it and
- 42:01Speaker 5: I'll never get to do it again, or maybe it'll
- 42:04Speaker 5: be okay and I'll get to do it again and again.
- 42:06Speaker 3: Oh we can't wait. I'm very excited. Yeah, sounds awesome.
- 42:09Speaker 3: Thank you again for being here, and thank you for
