Transcript
- 0:00It's bonus time here on the Gill Connections podcast.
- 0:03In an effort to increase communication, empathy and
- 0:06understanding around the country, we're going to be
- 0:08running a new episode every day interviewing a coach, a high
- 0:12school coach from every state, and yes, even you, Washington,
- 0:16DC with explaining how the state qualifying system works in their
- 0:21state. We'll be talking with a local
- 0:23state expert on how many classes, private versus public
- 0:27schools, what events and what is the process?
- 0:30Is it areas, districts, regionals, state meet?
- 0:34Is it a descending order list? Are there fun things that you do
- 0:38a little differently? Like maybe you, I don't know,
- 0:41maybe you do double points for relays looking at you Texas.
- 0:45And then we're also going to get to the bottom of is it the state
- 0:48meet or do you qualify for states?
- 0:50So check us out every day here in April and May of 2024 as we
- 0:54run through each state with a local state expert.
- 0:57So let's get started right now. All right, here we go.
- 1:10Thanks for joining us back again.
- 1:12As we continue to March through all 50 States and all 51 state
- 1:16meets, including you Washington, DC we're going to head up to the
- 1:19North and North Dakota today. Help me welcome Jeff Bakke from
- 1:23Red River High School. Jeff, how are you today, Sir?
- 1:26I'm doing well. Awesome, man.
- 1:28Hey, thank you so much. Just want to publicly state, you
- 1:30know, gratitude towards you stepping up here and
- 1:32volunteering for the state. No pressure.
- 1:34Just everybody's listening to you and what you say is going to
- 1:37be gospel. Everybody's going to believe
- 1:38whatever you say here about North Dakota, so.
- 1:41Perfect. Well, let's start.
- 1:43Why don't you give us an introduction of yourself, kind
- 1:45of a 32nd, 30,000 foot level. How long you've been coaching in
- 1:49the state, Maybe some accolades. Just give yourself some kind of
- 1:52St. cred if you will, OK? So I have completed 8.
- 1:57Years as the head boys coach here at Red River High School.
- 2:02So yeah, this will be my 9th year coming up and all.
- 2:05Yeah, I've previously coached some other places, but that's,
- 2:09you know, eight years straight in North Dakota.
- 2:12So have a fairly good perspective on what it's like
- 2:16coaching here. And so yeah, it's it's a unique
- 2:19place to be. But yeah, I enjoy it.
- 2:22And I've been to your high school and you have like the
- 2:25Field of Dreams when it comes to long jump, triple jump sand pit
- 2:28forms. Tell me you have like a
- 2:30bazillion jumpers. Like, you know, in some places
- 2:33everybody runs the quarter mile and some places everybody runs
- 2:35the mile. Tell me everybody does some kind
- 2:38of jumping at your place. While we certainly would like
- 2:41that, it it's not not exactly a bazillion, but yeah, we we do
- 2:46have, we have a nice set up where we have a long jump, 3
- 2:51long jump runways, but there's sand pits on either end.
- 2:53So there's really six pits right there.
- 2:56So that's that's been really useful depending on the wind or
- 2:59just practice and training. And yeah, it's a pretty cool
- 3:02setup. Well, I love it.
- 3:03It's very unique as well. You know, I go to every facility
- 3:05in the country and I have not seen that before.
- 3:07So very cool what you guys going on, got going on there at Red
- 3:10River. All right, let's talk about
- 3:11North Dakota. Jeff, you know some states, not
- 3:14many we're finding out, have a separate organizing body for
- 3:18public schools and a separate one for private schools.
- 3:20Others, more commonly both private and public, are all
- 3:23working towards the same state meet championship.
- 3:26What are we doing in North Dakota Public and private
- 3:28schools? It's they're all together.
- 3:30Yeah, we it's all all one perfect that's that's the most
- 3:34common. That's good.
- 3:35All right. So let's talk about classes.
- 3:36How many classes do we have there, usually by enrollment?
- 3:40And then what are they? What are we calling them?
- 3:41A Division, One, AA, S, etcetera.
- 3:44So in North Dakota there are just two classes A&B and yeah
- 3:48pretty pretty simple obviously the the the largest schools are
- 3:51in A and the everyone else is in B, so.
- 3:54Keeps keeps it simple like that. I love that.
- 3:56OK, so we have two boys teams that are going to go to earn A
- 4:00state championship title and two girls teams that are going on to
- 4:03win a state title. Love it.
- 4:04Correct. Let's talk about how they go
- 4:06about doing that. All around the country we have
- 4:09areas, district, sectionals, regionals, all these different
- 4:12names. What's the first round that we
- 4:14have for North Dakota? So the while we we have in North
- 4:19Dakota, really we just have a A region.
- 4:23And then the state meet. But what's what's unique about
- 4:27North Dakota, perhaps maybe the other different than other
- 4:30states is that we have a set of qualifying standards that
- 4:34athletes can hit at any point in the season as long as it's an
- 4:38outdoor meet. And so you know, I I looked into
- 4:43it a little bit. There was a coach here before me
- 4:46and he coached for a long time starting in the late 70s.
- 4:49He he didn't remember. Coaching without the qualifying
- 4:52standards. So I'm not exactly sure the year
- 4:55that they were created, but you know over 45 plus years ago they
- 5:01were created. And for the most part there,
- 5:05there are always, there's been a few tweaks, but for the most
- 5:07part they've gone relatively unchanged in that time period.
- 5:11And yeah, so we've got a region meeting.
- 5:14We're going to talk about that in a second.
- 5:15But before that, all through regular season, as long as it's
- 5:18an outdoor meet, if there's a certain mark for the shot put if
- 5:22any kid hits that mark or better, they're automatically
- 5:25going to the state meet. Exactly so.
- 5:28So that's do they do they even have to compete at regions?
- 5:32No, they they wouldn't have to. They don't have to.
- 5:35Straightforward to it. All right, cool.
- 5:36All right, well, let's talk about regions.
- 5:38That's pretty straightforward. On the automatic qualifying time
- 5:40for state regions, talk to me about how many athletes per
- 5:44event can I enter into the region meet.
- 5:47Well, and that, that. So in each event you can enter
- 5:52and this is, there's been some debate on this in recent years,
- 5:55but where we're at right now is five per event, at least at the
- 6:00Class A level. So.
- 6:02So we yeah, every event you can have 5 so I can do 5 vaulters, 5
- 6:07long jumpers, 1 relay team. And and then So if I have not
- 6:13hit my automatic qualifying time throughout the season, what do I
- 6:16need to do at regions to make it to the state?
- 6:18At regions in at the Class A level, you have to place in the
- 6:22top six in your event and if you haven't hit the qualifying
- 6:26standard, but you place in the top six at regions, you also get
- 6:30to go to the state meet. Now at the Class B level, where
- 6:34there are four different regions as opposed to two at Class A,
- 6:39you you have to place in the top two if you haven't hit the
- 6:44standard, because we have more regions in the smaller one
- 6:50because of travel, I might imagine.
- 6:52Yeah, exactly. Perfect.
- 6:53OK, so I have all season to hit a specific mark.
- 6:57Does that count relays as well? If I hit a certain mark in the
- 7:00relay, do I automatically go to state?
- 7:02Yep, Yep. There's also standards for all
- 7:04the relays. Perfect.
- 7:05And then if for some reason I maybe I haven't hit that yet,
- 7:08we're still going to go to regions and in regions in the
- 7:11big school class top 6 are going on the state regardless of the
- 7:16qualifying time is now out the door.
- 7:18Well actually I shouldn't say that.
- 7:19What if I get what if I haven't gotten the qualifying time all
- 7:23season and I go to regions and I get 7th but I hit the qualifying
- 7:28time? Then you also qualify, OK, so
- 7:30that we go all the way through regions on that qualifying time.
- 7:33Correct. Perfect or distance or height.
- 7:36OK, perfect. All right.
- 7:38I think that's pretty straightforward to go to state
- 7:41meet here then I like that talk to me about.
- 7:43The only other There's just one more caveat.
- 7:46There are the Class A level. There are less than 18 athletes
- 7:52that have qualified sometimes, sometimes with the standard,
- 7:56sometimes you have strong years, sometimes you have weak years.
- 7:58It comes and goes a little bit, you know.
- 8:01So there is a provisional standard Class A if there's less
- 8:05than 18. In the 400 or less or long jump,
- 8:09triple jump and all the throws. Then they use a provisional
- 8:13standard to try to reach 18, so they're they're going to have 18
- 8:18at that state meet one way or the other.
- 8:21Well, only they would have had the It's not just anybody that
- 8:24had to have still hit the provisional standard.
- 8:27Got it. OK, perfect.
- 8:28So there's still a a mark to hit.
- 8:31Yeah. To get considered that pool of
- 8:33athletes to go. Yeah, got it.
- 8:35OK. Perfect.
- 8:36All right, we'll talk to you about the state meet.
- 8:38Where are we hosting this? Is it at a college facility?
- 8:40High school facility? Are both classes at the same
- 8:43place, Different weekends, 2 day, three day, four day meet?
- 8:47Tell me about the state meet. Yeah.
- 8:49So the state meet for almost 20 years now has been held in
- 8:55Bismarck at the Bismarck Community Bowl which is a it's a
- 8:59city and a school district facility in Bismarck that.
- 9:04All of their schools use the universities have used it for me
- 9:08too so it's it's just pretty much a citywide facility and all
- 9:12the classes are together boys and girls together and it's yeah
- 9:17it's nice because it's the whole state is there all at the same
- 9:21time so for a long time it was only two days but we've now the
- 9:27past two years they actually extended it to a three day meet
- 9:31and. The reason they did that was,
- 9:33well, most teams were there the day before anyway and and that's
- 9:38just kind of what what you did. So they decided to to add just a
- 9:44handful of events. There's four running events and
- 9:49a few different like a field event for each class that that
- 9:52is held that that afternoon slash evening and otherwise the
- 9:57rest finishes on on. Friday and then Saturday.
- 10:01So kind of spread it out just a little bit.
- 10:03Maybe you do the two mile or something like that.
- 10:04Maybe one of the throwing events or something.
- 10:08Yeah, yeah, there's a couple. I don't want to say get them out
- 10:10of the way, 'cause that's terrible.
- 10:12It's to help allow the meat to go a little bit smoother as we
- 10:15continue Friday and Saturday. Yep.
- 10:16And from what we understand that it actually has helped a lot
- 10:19with volunteers, because when we have them all scrunched
- 10:24together, we have some volunteers that end up, you
- 10:27know, events are at the same time.
- 10:29So it actually helped out a lot with volunteers, spreading them
- 10:32out. So then the same people could
- 10:34work some of the, you know, different events across
- 10:38different days. That's cool.
- 10:39I would, I would have thought the opposite.
- 10:40So that's cool to hear that it actually helped.
- 10:42Yeah, great. A lot of states we're learning
- 10:45are including some kind of adaptive unified wheelchair
- 10:48events, anything like that going on in North Dakota right now.
- 10:51There has been some talk but as of now it hasn't yet, but I
- 10:55think it will be coming. Sometime in the relative near
- 10:59you know future hopefully. Yeah that that one has been as
- 11:01we you know we're getting a little bit over the halfway mark
- 11:04here in all 51 of our state meets.
- 11:06That has been more common than I thought, which is a great thing.
- 11:09You know track and field is the most inclusive sport.
- 11:11So it's really great to hear and it's glad to hear that North
- 11:14Dakota coaches are at least considering it talking about it
- 11:16it's it's a it's a it's a discussion I like that.
- 11:19That's great. So we've got two state champions
- 11:23in the 100 in the pole vault and the shot put on each boys and
- 11:26girls. Some states will do either an
- 11:29unofficial or official meet of champions type of meet where we
- 11:32bring all classes together and find out the air quotes here.
- 11:36True 100 meter champion. True discus champion, etcetera.
- 11:39Anything like that in North Dakota?
- 11:41No, there isn't. That's that sounds great.
- 11:44I wish we did. But but no, they're they they
- 11:47have not. I think years ago they tried it
- 11:50for a little bit, but it didn't last very long and it just found
- 11:54it too hard to rally people back to do it again.
- 11:57It is hard after you. I mean, we all point towards the
- 11:59state championship, so it's hard to like try to get up again for
- 12:02another meet there. Now get up.
- 12:03All right, let's talk about events.
- 12:05Let's see what you're doing there.
- 12:06We can assume you're doing the 102 hundred, 400 and 800 in the
- 12:10mile, two mile. Are you doing the 16, the 32,
- 12:13the 15, the 3000, the mile, two mile?
- 12:15What are we doing in that area? We we are doing this 16 and 32,
- 12:18OK, that's the common we're doing the 110 high hurdles and
- 12:20the 100 high hurdles for boys and girls.
- 12:22Yep, we're doing the 300 hurdles correct relays.
- 12:26We're definitely doing the four by one and four by four because
- 12:28I know you're getting tired of hearing this joke because if
- 12:30you're not doing those two relays, you're not doing track
- 12:32and field and you wouldn't be on this podcast.
- 12:34What other relays are we doing? We also have the four by two and
- 12:37the four by 8. Awesome.
- 12:40No medley relays, anything. Just.
- 12:43No. And that's another thing that
- 12:45some people have brought up about exploring and whatnot.
- 12:47But as of now, just the just those four.
- 12:49Very cool. Let's go to the field events.
- 12:51We're doing long jump and triple jump for boys and girls.
- 12:54Shot, put in discus, high jump hammer, high jump hammer.
- 12:58That did not make any sense. High jump.
- 13:01Pole vault? Correct.
- 13:03OK, perfect. Are we doing Hammer javelin
- 13:05multis? We we are a javelin state, so,
- 13:08so we've always always had that and and we have that as well.
- 13:12We do not have any. I love the multi events, I wish
- 13:16we did but but no nothing else. Those would be all the events.
- 13:19Now some states are doing unofficials that kind of like
- 13:22this. Meet a champs.
- 13:23They're doing an unofficial for some of these not so common
- 13:26events. Hammer multis.
- 13:28You already have the Javelin. Nothing like that though.
- 13:31No, no. And you know, there's there's
- 13:33always, again, talk of maybe people throwing some stuff
- 13:36together, but nothing official or even really unofficial in
- 13:39terms of those events. And before we move on to a
- 13:42couple of fun things here, Jeff, anything that we missed,
- 13:45anything unique, You score only the top four places at state
- 13:49meet or I don't know, you allow a baton that's a pole, ball pole
- 13:55that would. Be legal, but no, we missed.
- 13:57As as far as our state meet, no, we you know we have those 19
- 14:02events and regular scoring for all the events yeah the the the
- 14:09schedule is. Changed a little bit after we
- 14:12added the third day. So otherwise, it that's kind of
- 14:16the same schedule had been used for forever.
- 14:18And so otherwise, yeah, pretty standard, at least for us.
- 14:23Yeah, I love it. It's really good.
- 14:24All right. Well, help us settle a debate,
- 14:26Jeff, at least in your area, your community, your culture.
- 14:29When we're talking about going to the state championship there
- 14:33in Bismarck, are we qualifying for state, Are we qualifying for
- 14:36states is where we just qualified for the state meet.
- 14:39How do we say it there? So definitely we say we
- 14:43qualified for state, or some people might say they qualified
- 14:47for the state meet. The only time I've ever heard
- 14:50people say states is somebody from a different part of the
- 14:54country. And it was very obvious right
- 14:56away you're not familiar with this.
- 14:59So I've never heard that we are singular in North Dakota.
- 15:02State or state. You can add meat if you'd like.
- 15:04State meat. Yeah, I love it.
- 15:07Jeff, man, you've been such a good sport for us and
- 15:09representing North Dakota, so grateful for you.
- 15:12We'll give you a little bit of a prize here.
- 15:14You're going to win the magic wand here.
- 15:16So you get to change one thing and only one thing in the great
- 15:20state of North Dakota for your outdoor state track and field
- 15:24could be anything. I don't even put put words or
- 15:26thoughts in your mind, but if you could change one thing for
- 15:28the better, what might that be? Well, I think what.
- 15:32Might do is and there's there's I know a lot of people that
- 15:36agree with agree with me but it's not you know unanimous or
- 15:39anything but our state meet is always held the you know the the
- 15:44Friday Saturday before Memorial Day and we have in North Dakota
- 15:52arguably you know Alaska might have us beat but we we probably
- 15:56have the worst weather on average if you look at any other
- 16:00state. So we it seems like we it's a
- 16:04disservice to the kids that we so often have to run in poor
- 16:09weather. You know it's just some years
- 16:12we've had good springs but we sugared in last year and you
- 16:16know so we've there's been a lot of talk and hope that can we can
- 16:20we push this back let's start later and and you know start and
- 16:24finish two weeks later and maybe actually have some some decent
- 16:27weather there because we think we.
- 16:29We have some pretty impressive performances for what the kids
- 16:32have to train with and and deal with.
- 16:34So, jeez, what would it be like if if we could get a little bit
- 16:38more of that nicer weather? So that that's maybe what I
- 16:40would say. I think that's a good use of the
- 16:42magic wand is what I say. Jeff, let's, let's let these
- 16:45kids shine in some actual sunshine, not with their
- 16:48snowshoes on, trying to do the, the four by four.
- 16:51I get it. That makes a lot of sense.
- 16:53A lot of sense. Jeff, thank you so much.
- 16:55Man, this is a great journey that we're on every day looking
- 16:58at a different state meet and how they're doing things.
- 17:00And I like North Dakota. I love that you're a javelin
- 17:02state. A lot of other states need to
- 17:04get on board. We're about half about 5050
- 17:07right now. But I love that you guys are
- 17:09pioneers in that event and giving kids the opportunity for
- 17:12that, that great event, the javelin.
- 17:14So thank you, Jeff, for being here, man.
- 17:15So grateful for you. Join us tomorrow, we'll do it
- 17:18all over again. We're going to figure out what
- 17:19the next state meet looks like. Thanks everybody.
