- 0:02Birds podcast. It's brought to you by BET three sixty five.
- 0:04Whatever the sport, whatever the moment, it's never ordinary. At
- 0:07Bet three six five. We know that next week, at
- 0:11this time, the Eagles will have been on the practice
- 0:13field all week long. For the most part, they report
- 0:16on Tuesday, they practice Wednesday and Thursday, and of course
- 0:21right now, Football at four takes a look at all
- 0:23the big storylines heading into camp, which begins next week.
- 0:27Andrew to Checko is in today for Adam kaplan for
- 0:30today's Football at four, and he has a plethora of
- 0:34great stuff over at insidethebirds dot com to get you
- 0:38ready for Eagles training camp. We're gonna preview all of
- 0:41the top storylines in battles that he'll be watching as
- 0:45training camp opens on Tuesday with practice on when Andrew
- 0:48to Checko Football at four, what is going on?
- 0:50Speaker 2: My friend? How are you? Hey? Dom? Mike?
- 0:53Speaker 3: Good to talk to here?
- 0:54Speaker 1: Yeah, man, this time next week the Birds will be
- 0:56probably just coming off the practice field I think off
- 1:00Friday actually, but ten o'clock practices next week. Let's get
- 1:03into some of the big storylines that Andrew, you'll be
- 1:06watching all the battles. And let's start with that right
- 1:09guard spot, Tyler Steen taking on Kenyon Green taking on
- 1:13Matt Pryor. That's like the one story on the offensive
- 1:17side of the ball for starting playing time that everyone's
- 1:21gonna be kind of watching as we enter training camp
- 1:23next week.
- 1:24Speaker 2: How do you handicap those three?
- 1:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean you look at Tyler Steen and he
- 1:29played three hundred and sixteen snaps last season for the Eagles.
- 1:32Entering his third season. This is really do or die
- 1:36for him this year. And what I mean by that
- 1:38is he had a chance last year and he had
- 1:41the yank injury and McKai Beckton was able to overtake him.
- 1:44Now he has a golden opportunity. He is the favorite.
- 1:50Heinam that are going to really realistically be pushing him. Yeah,
- 1:53you have Kenyon Green and I think Matt Pryor would
- 1:55be the biggest challenger. But I thought Steen did a
- 1:59nice job last year. I really did. When he was
- 2:01pressed into service mid game. That requires a lot of
- 2:04attention to detail and focus from the sideline and also
- 2:07applying what you're learning on the practice field. He moves
- 2:10well better than Becton, and I think that when you're
- 2:13pairing somebody between Cam Jurgens and Lane Johnson, you can
- 2:19kind of atone for any sort of shortcomings or acclamation period.
- 2:23Speaker 1: I kind of look at this, see if you're on
- 2:25the same page at all or my way off based
- 2:27on this one, Andrew, I look at this similar to
- 2:29twenty seventeen, where basically Saamalis started he was the guy
- 2:33they wonted. Steen is the Sayamala, They went to Warmack,
- 2:37tried to see if he could do it. Green would
- 2:39be the Warmack And in the end they said, we
- 2:42have prior in our back pocket.
- 2:44Speaker 2: That would be Wisnooski.
- 2:45Speaker 1: So it wouldn't be crazy to suggest that we might
- 2:48see all three of these guys get a shot at
- 2:50some point this year.
- 2:53Speaker 3: I mean, I'm barring injury, I'm expecting Tyler Stein to
- 2:56be that guy. Obviously, the sample size is pretty small,
- 3:00but talking to Tyler last season and really being able
- 3:03to see him in the preseason and really even in
- 3:06the regular season, that Saints game really stands out to
- 3:09me as the best sort of description as to what
- 3:13he can do. It really illustrates I should say what
- 3:16he can do. He moves well, and he and then
- 3:19that Saints game, it was like him and Fred Johnson
- 3:21on one side of the field and the offense didn't
- 3:23really miss a beat. He can look at certain moments
- 3:25throughout the season where I thought that he was able
- 3:27to step in and really quit himself pretty well. So
- 3:31I'm not necessarily looking at it as a platoon situation.
- 3:35Speaker 1: I would tend to agree with you in terms of
- 3:37I think Steen is fine. I think Stein will win
- 3:39the job, but that it just kind of seems similar
- 3:42to the way that these guys profile, that they have
- 3:45that in their back pocket.
- 3:46Speaker 2: We'll see that right guard spot.
- 3:48Speaker 1: It will be one of the big stories on the
- 3:49offensive side of the ball before I shift to the defense,
- 3:52because it seems that that's where all the stories seemed
- 3:54to be. Is there another offensive battle that is a
- 3:58battle or is the offense pretty He's set after that
- 4:01right guard spot to you.
- 4:03Speaker 3: So it's interesting because this is a minor one, but
- 4:05something I'll be keeping an eye on because I like
- 4:08watching training camp battles unfold and I know a lot
- 4:10about these players. So it would be wide receiver four
- 4:13or wide receiver five, or maybe even wide receiver six,
- 4:16because beyond aj Brown Devontae Smith and Johan Dotts, and
- 4:20there's a lot of questions. Right, Johnny Wilson would appear
- 4:23to be the favorite. He was the number four wide
- 4:24receiver last year. He played three hundred and sixty nine snaps,
- 4:28thirty four percent of the defensive snaps. And he's somebody
- 4:31who does a lot of the dirty work, the grimy
- 4:33work that Zach Paskell did in twenty two, that Alaminde
- 4:36Zikias did in twenty twenty three. It takes a certain
- 4:39type of mindset to be able to pull that off.
- 4:41He also has a unique dimensions, right, he offers six
- 4:45foot seven, crazy you know, you know, athletic profile and
- 4:49then the wingspan and all that. But for me, I
- 4:53think that his name should be written in pencil at
- 4:55the moment because they want to see what he can
- 4:58get great with more regularity, be able to help and
- 5:03factor in in contested cat situations, and really take that
- 5:07next step and evolve in his second season. But then
- 5:11you have an Isa Smith, and I a Smith is
- 5:13a predominant slot player. So if he's going to stick
- 5:16or at least make a serious run for a roster spot,
- 5:19one would think that he's going to have to showcase
- 5:21a lot as a punt returner, to show that value
- 5:25and really trying to establish that staying power. And then
- 5:28of course you have Danny Gray, who I've talked a
- 5:31ton about and four three three speeds, who adds a
- 5:34different element than any of the players who were going
- 5:36to be sort of chronicling here. He can get vertical,
- 5:39former third round pick and he was on the practice
- 5:42squad last year, so obviously familiarity with the system with
- 5:46wide receivers. Coach Aaron moorehead and the last player that
- 5:50I'll mention is Terras Marshall. Terris Marshall has a bigger body,
- 5:54not quite to the degree of a Johnny Wilson, not
- 5:56many receivers do, but he can kind of do similar things.
- 5:59And I thought he had a really good spring, definitely
- 6:01more so than Johnny Wilson, who missed some time during
- 6:05the spring, at least for the media attended session. So
- 6:07I'm kind of looking to see at Mike how that
- 6:09all transpires.
- 6:10Speaker 2: And Andrew Czecko Football four.
- 6:12Speaker 1: These are some of the top general eve of training
- 6:15camp things and storylines. And Andrew and everyone will be watching.
- 6:18He'll be covering it live from the novacare complex. Ringo
- 6:22versus Jackson is that the battle. Is there anybody else
- 6:25in that battle? Handicap that one as you entered camp
- 6:28next week.
- 6:29Speaker 3: No, that's going to be primarily Kiev Ringo versus Dori
- 6:33Jackson and Tivy Ringo enters with as the odds on favorite.
- 6:37He used he has the inside track entering his third
- 6:40season with the Eagles and second season in a row
- 6:44working with Sick Vanjao, Christian Parker the Eagles defensive backs coach,
- 6:48Ory Anderson, the cornerbacks coach. He liked the continuity there,
- 6:51and Keighley in the spring talked about honing in on
- 6:53his technique, which really, you know, raised my antenna because
- 6:57it's never been about the athleticism with kiv Ringo. It's
- 6:59always been about the technique. And he's such a young player.
- 7:03I think folks forget that he's just twenty two years old.
- 7:06So if he's able to put this together, the Eagles
- 7:08could really have something there.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Now.
- 7:09Speaker 3: The problem is, or should say the biggest question Mike
- 7:12is how would he handle being targeted heavily each and
- 7:17every week because teams aren't going to throw the football
- 7:20to Quinny on Mitchell's side of the field, and so
- 7:23it puts a unique amount of pressure on Kiev Ringo
- 7:26to make sure that he's staying assignment sound. And what
- 7:28we've learned from Vic Fangio is that's what he prioritizes
- 7:31and covets from his defensive players. So that's going to
- 7:34go a long way, obviously in determining who starts between
- 7:38a Dory Jackson and Kiev Ringo. Dorriy Jackson has played
- 7:41in ninety seven games I believe in the NFL, so
- 7:45I think you liked that experience. But I think Kaley Ringo,
- 7:48knowing how much time and really just manpowered the Eagles
- 7:53have invested in him, I think that obviously he would
- 7:56be the favorite.
- 7:57Speaker 1: All right, Andrew, I think this one's going to be fun.
- 7:59It will be to see the evolution of Jalox Hunt,
- 8:03and then he will be trying to hold off two
- 8:05veteran players who were once the young guys that people
- 8:08were excited about. Not old guys by any stretch, but Azizo,
- 8:12Jeli josh Uch. How do you see that triangle happening
- 8:16and working out as camp begins.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Well, Jalox Hunt is going to start, for all you know,
- 8:23by all accounts, the something would have to go, you know,
- 8:26drastically wrong for that not to happen. But the question becomes,
- 8:29this is the player who played two hundred and forty
- 8:31one regular season staffs, what's he going to look like
- 8:34in an expanded role? Now you you know me, We've
- 8:37talked a lot about this. I think very highly of Jalox.
- 8:40I think he's going to transition to a starting role
- 8:43pretty favorably. But that's just my assumption based off of
- 8:47what the information that we have and the information that
- 8:50we have as a player who factored into the rotation. Eventually,
- 8:53about halfway through the season, he made an impact in
- 8:56the postseason. I thought he's he got active and was
- 8:59willing against the run. So you see a lot of
- 9:02the qualities that suggested it can translate into a much
- 9:06more prominent role. And he was asked to add weight
- 9:09to his frame this year, and he's been throwing a
- 9:11round weight that he wasn't throwing around last season. I
- 9:14sat down with his trainer, Corey Clark, so all the
- 9:17signs are there. But then you look at Ojulari, who
- 9:20I think can be a really good third edge edge player,
- 9:24and he's going to be obviously needed in this rotation,
- 9:28but he's got to be able to stay healthy. That's
- 9:30been the big hiccup with him. It's never been about ability,
- 9:33it's been about availability. Twenty two career sacks, twenty five
- 9:37years old, obviously has a lot of familiarity with his
- 9:39teammates there, so I think you feel pretty good about
- 9:42at least where he stands as the third destch rusher.
- 9:45And then the question becomes, josh Usha, what do you
- 9:47have there? Because it's kind of a polarizing player. You
- 9:51have to go back to the twenty twenty two season
- 9:52where he had eleven and a half sacks. Of course,
- 9:54the last two seasons where he split time with the
- 9:57Patriots and the Chiefs and he had five sacks. So
- 10:00which version are you getting? And he's clearly a situational
- 10:04player the year in which he had eleven and a
- 10:06half sacks, who played thirty eight percent of their snaps
- 10:08for the Patriots. So I think as a fourth edge rusher,
- 10:11he'll be just fine.
- 10:14Speaker 1: The next question, and I don't know even know how
- 10:16we answer this, so I'm interested to see what you
- 10:18bring to the table here. Andrew to hid Campbell verse,
- 10:21who what's his role. Will he be ready? What are
- 10:25you looking to see from him? Will he even be
- 10:28out on the field on Wednesday? Give us some thoughts
- 10:30on Campbell and how this kind of materializes.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Okay, lots of unpacked there. I'm expecting him to be
- 10:38around on Wednesday on the field participating. Well, no, I mean,
- 10:43Nick Vangio said sometime in August, So I think they're
- 10:46not going to rush his timetable. They want him to
- 10:48be operating at you know, peak levels. But what you
- 10:52see from him as just a player who I think
- 10:55has a skill set that embodies what it means to
- 10:59be the new age NFL defender. He has the length,
- 11:01he has the fluidity, the sideline, the sideline range. He
- 11:04can cover tight ends and running backs and all those
- 11:06things that you look for. And he also can rush
- 11:10the passer a little bit, which may be his easiest
- 11:13path to playing time because there's a lot of responsibilities
- 11:16that I don't think are fully appreciated that are placed
- 11:18on the shoulders of linebackers in vic Fangio's system, and
- 11:22because of that, it may take a little bit of
- 11:24time to act, only especially if you're joining late and
- 11:27you're behind the eight ball.
- 11:28Speaker 2: A little bit.
- 11:29Speaker 3: The player that I think is going to reap the
- 11:31benefits most is Jeremiah Trotter Junior, who the Eagles are
- 11:34really happy with his development and smart player instinctual doesn't
- 11:38have the measurables, but I think he's very sound assignment sound,
- 11:43and Vic Fango has praised him going into that divisional
- 11:47round playoff game, and so that carries a lot of weight.
- 11:50So I think he would be the next in line.
- 11:52They don't have a lot of optionality there. That's really
- 11:55a place that I thought the Eagles were going to
- 11:56address before training camp, just to simply add another body
- 12:00before camp. Smilemondon is there, the rookie linebacker from Georgia,
- 12:04but he's mostly in my opinion, going to be a
- 12:06special teamer this year. So yeah, I think to answer
- 12:09that question, Jeremiah Trotter Junior would be the player to
- 12:11highlight there, all.
- 12:13Speaker 2: Right, Andrew.
- 12:13Speaker 1: The last one would be Drew mccuba, the second round
- 12:16pick obviously at the safety position against basically Sydney Brown.
- 12:22And is there anybody else in that room? I guess
- 12:24that one is would you say wide open or do
- 12:27you have a favorite handicap that one?
- 12:31Speaker 3: Nick Fanjo also threw in Tristan McCollum. He threw his
- 12:34name into the mix, But to be honest with you,
- 12:36I don't view it as totally wide open. It's going
- 12:38to be a competition. And Drew mccuba the rookie has
- 12:41to get into campus to sign first. But I mean,
- 12:45you don't draft somebody in the second round unless they
- 12:49have a hard time picking up the defense.
- 12:51Speaker 2: You don't.
- 12:52Speaker 3: You don't draft them where you draft him and have
- 12:54him sit on the bench. He has an ability and
- 12:57a skill set and a body type that kind of
- 12:59reminds me a little bit of Gardner Johnson. And he
- 13:02has a knack for taking away the football, versatile, instinctive,
- 13:07all the qualities that Vic Vangio looks for in a
- 13:10defensive back in his system. Doesn't have the biggest, biggest frame,
- 13:15he doesn't have a lot of size, but he does
- 13:16play with some physicality. Versus Sydney Brown, who is a
- 13:20player who hasn't really gotten much of a fair shake.
- 13:23He got injured last sear at the end of his
- 13:25rookie year, didn't have a full offseason, and now he does.
- 13:30But he is probably going to have to alter the
- 13:32way he plays the game to coincide with the way
- 13:35that Vick Fangio likes his defensive backs to play. He's
- 13:39sometimes plays unrestrained. He's primarily a box safety anyway, but
- 13:44he plays with his hair on fire, and sometimes that
- 13:46leads to feaster famine play. And for him to have
- 13:50confidence in him to go out there and execute the assignments,
- 13:53he's going to have to be a little bit more
- 13:54assignment sound, a little bit more disciplined on the field.
- 13:57And then Tristan McCollum is a player who I've talked
- 13:59a lot about out He is as simon sound. He
- 14:02does play within the structure of the defense, and he
- 14:05quietly just he makes plays. He's in the right He's
- 14:07more often than not in the right place at the
- 14:09right time, and there's something to be said for that.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Andrew, of all the things we just talked about, are
- 14:15something else, the thing that you are most intrigued by
- 14:18when Wednesday comes around.
- 14:21Speaker 3: I kind of want to see if the running backs
- 14:24are going to be more involved in the passing game, right,
- 14:26because that's just the first thing that popped in mind.
- 14:28It the reason why I say I'm out looking to
- 14:30see the offense as a whole is because sometimes you
- 14:33can't glean that in training camp. Most oftentimes you can
- 14:37in the preseason, you can't either. We won't really know
- 14:39what the offense as a whole looks like until the
- 14:41regular season. But the running backs, when you talk about
- 14:44evolved and you heard that word that was the buzzword
- 14:47in the spring, sometimes it doesn't necessarily mean something drastic
- 14:51one way or the other, but it could mean some
- 14:54different wrinkles and different wrinkles. The utilization of the middle
- 14:58of the field with someone like a Alas got Ter
- 15:00maybe Johan Dotson running backs in the passing game. This
- 15:04for me is something I'm look forward to seeing because
- 15:06Jayalen Hurts hasn't utilized the running backs in the passing
- 15:09game and you have someone like say Kwon Barkley, who
- 15:13we saw catch that wheel route against the Packers in
- 15:16Week one. He obviously can do it and do it
- 15:18at a high level. Will Shipley is the guy for
- 15:21me who can add a different dimension, a unique dimension
- 15:24to the offense because while Kenny Gainwell was very adept
- 15:27at catching passes, will Shipley is explosive. He brings a
- 15:30lot of juice and he turns up field when he
- 15:32gets the football and you can probably move him around
- 15:34formations and feel pretty comfortable in doing so. So that's
- 15:37what I'm looking to see. How are they going to
- 15:39utilize their running backs as it pertains to the passing game.
- 15:42Speaker 1: It all starts next week, and of course the guys
- 15:44from Inside the Birds will have plenty of coverage on
- 15:46Inside the Birds dot com and the Inside of the
- 15:48Birds podcast and right here on Football at four. Andrew
- 15:51to Checko Pinch hitting today for Adam Kaplan on a
- 15:54Happy Hour Friday, giving you all the things to look
- 15:57for at next week Eagles camp. All right, you appreciate
- 16:00you as always, Pal'll have a great weekend.
- 16:02Speaker 3: Thanks Mike, you as well
