- 0:00Speaker 1: The hop topic ladies get a stern view from the top,
- 0:04Speaker 1: tone it down. They're being told Disney chief ball Biker
- 0:06Speaker 1: telling Whoopee and her daytime co host to soften their
- 0:10Speaker 1: rhetoric and talk about more than just Donald Trump and politics.
- 0:14Speaker 2: ABC didn't deny.
- 0:15Speaker 1: The report, but The Daily b says the stars pushed
- 0:18Speaker 1: back hard. This comes as Trump's intimidation toward hits media companies,
- 0:22Speaker 1: including Paramount, whose settlement talks sparked the sudden resignation of
- 0:27Speaker 1: CBS News executives. Let's get into it now. We have
- 0:30Speaker 1: someone at this table that has experienced a little bit.
- 0:32Speaker 3: Sorry, maybe I should.
- 0:36Speaker 1: A certain person is at a certain network experience a
- 0:41Speaker 1: certain parent.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Happened. What do you make of what is happening here?
- 0:45Speaker 4: Well, this is this is what this entire culture and
- 0:50Speaker 4: media environment like. Trump is obviously again using his position
- 0:54Speaker 4: as president to put pressure on.
- 0:55Speaker 3: These media companies.
- 0:57Speaker 4: And I think a lot of them are capitulating and
- 1:00Speaker 4: feeling that pressure because they have things and business deals
- 1:02Speaker 4: and things on the side that they want to happen,
- 1:05Speaker 4: that they want to do, and so to me, the
- 1:08Speaker 4: disappointing part is that when you capitulate a little as
- 1:12Speaker 4: we've seen with this particular person, it does not matter.
- 1:15Speaker 3: He doesn't care.
- 1:15Speaker 4: If you capitulate, if you give them what he's want,
- 1:17Speaker 4: what he wants, he's not going to stop asking for it.
- 1:20Speaker 4: To me, it's just a simple thing of ratings. It's like,
- 1:23Speaker 4: do the ratings support that you should stop talking about
- 1:26Speaker 4: Donald Trump? Probably not so if you are Bob Iger,
- 1:29Speaker 4: who I do have a lot of respect for.
- 1:31Speaker 2: He was my former boss.
- 1:32Speaker 4: If you're him, that's the only thing that should matter.
- 1:35Speaker 4: As long as the audience decides that they have an
- 1:37Speaker 4: appetite for that, then that's what the women should talk about,
- 1:39Speaker 4: whether you like how they discuss it or not.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Just to put a pin on that the ratings are
- 1:43Speaker 1: up from last year or at the view so again
- 1:45Speaker 1: that the numbers do shout down.
- 1:48Speaker 5: Well that that seems like it would make sense. I
- 1:51Speaker 5: think from in you know, I have a work behind
- 1:53Speaker 5: the scenes anything but from an editorial perspective, And I'm
- 1:56Speaker 5: saying this just not just as a conservative, but as
- 1:59Speaker 5: someone who watches the news, watches a lot of television.
- 2:02Speaker 5: I don't think that it's very good whether it is
- 2:05Speaker 5: the view or a conservative version of the view, to
- 2:08Speaker 5: really lean into I think, what is a lot of
- 2:13Speaker 5: the hate that we're seeing when it comes to Donald Trump.
- 2:15Speaker 5: There are valid criticisms to be made of Donald Trump,
- 2:18Speaker 5: and Donald Trump doesn't need to be handed handled like
- 2:22Speaker 5: kid gloves or anything like that. But from what I
- 2:25Speaker 5: see from the view, and I'm not someone who watches
- 2:27Speaker 5: it all the time, but from the clips that I
- 2:29Speaker 5: see of the view, I just say to myself, why
- 2:31Speaker 5: is this a thing? The audience very well may respond
- 2:34Speaker 5: to it in a very good way, but just like
- 2:36Speaker 5: we asked the last time, what are you getting out
- 2:38Speaker 5: of it?
- 2:39Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 2:40Speaker 5: And maybe it's just rating you're It reflects people's opinions.
- 2:46Speaker 1: I think that's why their ratings are up. And it's juicy.
- 2:49Speaker 3: It's what people want to talk about and hear about.
- 2:51Speaker 3: And you know, I'm confronting that.
- 2:53Speaker 6: You know, every time I try to do something other
- 2:55Speaker 6: than politics, everyone just wants me to do politics.
- 2:58Speaker 3: And it's what people want to hear about.
- 2:59Speaker 2: They're telling you up in politics.
- 3:01Speaker 6: Yeah, but you know, we're living in a time where
- 3:05Speaker 6: the business of journalism is coming up against journalism.
- 3:08Speaker 3: And we've seen that at the Washington Post.
- 3:10Speaker 6: With Amazon, we've already seen it at ABC with that
- 3:13Speaker 6: sixteen million dollar settlement to Trump over up lost if
- 3:16Speaker 6: they easily could have one. We're seeing it at CBS.
- 3:19Speaker 6: We're seeing the business side. Journalism has two sides, business
- 3:23Speaker 6: and editorial. Usually business leaves editorial alone, that's how it's
- 3:28Speaker 6: supposed to be. And now the business side, with these
- 3:32Speaker 6: multi conglomerate companies owning including ours our own, are becoming
- 3:38Speaker 6: so important, so much more important, and the journalism product is.
- 3:43Speaker 3: One piece of their portfolio.
- 3:45Speaker 6: So they're making decisions for the rest of their portfolio
- 3:48Speaker 6: and shareholders.
- 3:49Speaker 3: But the journalism gets the worst of it.
- 3:52Speaker 6: The brunt of it, the impact, and it's deleterious and
- 3:56Speaker 6: it's corrosive and it's going to lead to more and
- 3:59Speaker 6: the chilling effects. Already starting to see it. Listen, I
- 4:02Speaker 6: have my issues with the view. I'm proud of the
- 4:04Speaker 6: ladies for standing up and saying we're not doing that here.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Yeah, somebody has too. There's already been a threat.
- 4:10Speaker 1: I mean, Donald Trump has said out loud that he
- 4:12Speaker 1: wants to take licenses away from media companies, So the
- 4:15Speaker 1: threat has been put out there and the fear I
- 4:17Speaker 1: think from the media companies.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Not speaking for my bosses, but.
- 4:20Speaker 1: I am it is that perhaps there's something that they
- 4:24Speaker 1: start doing to try and strip away your ability to
- 4:27Speaker 1: do business.
- 4:28Speaker 7: And where's going to push back? I mean, we got
- 4:30Speaker 7: three and a half years when he's out of office.
- 4:32Speaker 7: What are they going to talk about? Then? I just
- 4:34Speaker 7: want to throw it out. So maybe I do two podcasts.
- 4:37Speaker 7: I try to stay off politics completely completely.
- 4:40Speaker 2: It's a mirac and guess what I've got.
- 4:42Speaker 7: My ratings are up, my numbers are up. People are
- 4:45Speaker 7: listening because people reach out to me and say, well,
- 4:47Speaker 7: you know, I'm glad you finally you're talking about that.
- 4:49Speaker 7: And I do things like you know, people suffering from MS,
- 4:52Speaker 7: people suffering from PTSD. I do things like that because
- 4:55Speaker 7: I think that our nation needs to be engaged in
- 4:58Speaker 7: other conversations just what he's doing every day, because by
- 5:02Speaker 7: talking about him every day, I'm glad the ladies push back,
- 5:05Speaker 7: but I would like them to take a trip outside
- 5:08Speaker 7: of the hill. Oh can you go to Cleveland?
- 5:12Speaker 3: Can go?
- 5:14Speaker 2: You know, it's just for a couple of seconds, just
- 5:15Speaker 2: to see what's going on.
- 5:17Speaker 4: But they also have to worry about what is this
- 5:19Speaker 4: message that's being sent to younger journalists, Because that's what
- 5:21Speaker 4: I worry about. As well, at a time where our
- 5:23Speaker 4: profession is completely under attack. I came up in the
- 5:26Speaker 4: journalism environment where you didn't let city Hall come after
- 5:29Speaker 4: your reporters. You defended them right and to see it.
- 5:32Speaker 4: And I know they're not straight journalists necessarily on the view,
- 5:35Speaker 4: but it's still representing a journalism body. So if the
- 5:38Speaker 4: business that you work for, and again y'all know I
- 5:40Speaker 4: went through this at ESPN, if they're not willing to
- 5:42Speaker 4: defend you in this moment, that's really leaving you vulnerable,
- 5:47Speaker 4: and it's really really leaving our entire industry vulnerable. It's
- 5:50Speaker 4: not just about this for ladies, it's about what this represents.
- 5:52Speaker 4: You already gave him fifteen million. Do you think these
- 5:54Speaker 4: ask are? Don't stop. No, it's this today, is something
- 5:57Speaker 4: else tomorrow. So at some point you have to draw
- 5:59Speaker 4: the line. Always just keep bullying, when you keep giving
- 6:01Speaker 4: them things.
- 6:02Speaker 2: That is what my grandmother Will always used to say.
