Speaker 2: Meteorologist Brian Hughes says the fog's burning off and there's
• 1:35
Speaker 2: at least a slight chance, we've got to mention at
• 1:37
Speaker 2: least a slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm today.
• 1:39
Speaker 2: Less humid, though. Highs are going to be in the mid-80s.
• 1:41
Speaker 2: Clear and calm tonight. Shouldn't be too bad for high
• 1:44
Speaker 2: school football. Lows are going to be in the low 60s.
• 1:47
Speaker 2: We'll start off your Saturday with some fog, otherwise sunny
• 1:49
Speaker 2: with a high in the upper 80s and sunshine and
• 1:51
Speaker 2: warmer on Sunday with a high around 90. Sunny and
• 1:52
Speaker 2: hot Saturday. into early next week. Temps each day envelope
• 1:56
Speaker 2: to mid-90s. You can download the Metro News television app
• 1:59
Speaker 2: to follow Brian and his team of meteorologists and follow
• 2:02
Speaker 2: along on social media as well. Well, if you thought
• 2:04
Speaker 2: there was a lot of scuttle about the feud between
• 2:06
Speaker 2: Senator Jim Justice and Governor Patrick Morrissey, well, the Kanawha
• 2:10
Speaker 2: County Commission said, hold my beer. We'll have more on
• 2:13
Speaker 2: that coming up a little bit later on. Plus, there's
• 2:15
Speaker 2: an organization that's been doing a lot of great things
• 2:17
Speaker 2: in the community for years in southern West Virginia. They
• 2:19
Speaker 2: are now expanding their services into Kanawha County. We'll talk
• 2:22
Speaker 2: about that. Plus, our friends Tricia and Carol from the
• 2:24
Speaker 2: Charleston Distance Room will stop by a little high school
• 2:27
Speaker 2: football talk. And, of course, your calls and texts. Guarantee
• 2:30
Speaker 2: Bank Hotline 304-345-5858. Tony Taylor, text 304-935-5008. Let's bring in
• 2:37
Speaker 2: our good friend Angie Gillenwater, Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association, with this
• 2:41
Speaker 2: week's Adopt Me, Please Spend of the Week, brought to
• 2:43
Speaker 2: you by Almost Heaven Interiors, located on D Street in
• 2:46
Speaker 2: South Charleston. Angie, good morning and welcome to the show.
• 2:50
  Speaker 4: Good morning.
• 2:51
Speaker 5: I'm happy to be here.
• 2:52
  Speaker 2: Happy Friday.
• 2:53
  Speaker 5: Oh, no, finally.
• 2:55
  Speaker 6: I don't know, though.
• 2:56
Speaker 2: I mean, you guys got a lot of stuff going on,
• 2:58
Speaker 2: including kegs for canines over at the Red Carpet. We'll
• 3:01
Speaker 2: talk about that a little bit later on. But first,
• 3:03
Speaker 2: let's get to our Dot Me Please Pet of the Week.
• 3:04
Speaker 2: As always, picture posted, Dave Allen Radio on Facebook and
• 3:08
Speaker 2: the WCHS Network Facebook page and Dave Allen on X. Angie,
• 3:11
Speaker 2: tell us about Leopard Shark.
• 3:15
Speaker 5: So Leopard Shark was brought into KCHA as a stray.
• 3:19
Speaker 5: She was found hiding underneath someone's car with her two siblings.
• 3:23
Speaker 5: She's about two months old. She's not spayed yet, but
• 3:26
Speaker 5: she will be before she goes home. So don't worry
• 3:28
Speaker 5: about that. And she's a kitten, so she will likely
• 3:32
Speaker 5: adapt to any type of lifestyle you got, whether you
• 3:35
Speaker 5: have kids, other cats, dogs, some other third thing. So
• 3:40
Speaker 5: she'll likely adapt pretty easily to any home life.
• 3:43
Speaker 2: She's a beautiful, beautiful kitten. And again, you can see
• 3:46
Speaker 2: her picture we have posted on there. It's kind of
• 3:48
Speaker 2: a unique color, kind of a taupe, kind of a,
• 3:51
Speaker 2: I mean, how would you describe it? You've seen her
• 3:52
  Speaker 2: in person.
• 3:52
  Speaker 7: I haven't.
• 3:54
Speaker 5: So that color pattern is called a lynx point. So
• 3:58
Speaker 5: the tabby markings are where they would be on like
• 4:00
Speaker 5: a Siamese cat. So those are called points. And depending
• 4:04
Speaker 5: on the coloring they have there, it's a blank point.
• 4:08
Speaker 5: So she's lynx point.
• 4:10
Speaker 2: Well, and the great thing I have found in my
• 4:12
Speaker 2: experience with cats, if you get a cat that is
• 4:14
Speaker 2: that young, you can pretty much mold them into whatever
• 4:17
Speaker 2: you want, you know? I mean, because cats have this reputation,
• 4:21
Speaker 2: and everybody says, well, they're standoffish and so on. Well,
• 4:24
Speaker 2: I mean, they're like dogs or anything else. I mean,
• 4:26
Speaker 2: it depends on how they're raised. Now, cats do have
• 4:28
Speaker 2: a little bit of that. I'll give a little bit
• 4:30
Speaker 2: of attitude from time to time, but I mean, the
• 4:32
Speaker 2: cats that my wife and I have are both the
• 4:35
Speaker 2: most loving cats in the world, and, you know, they're
• 4:38
Speaker 2: They're always around us. And at two months old, she
• 4:41
Speaker 2: could probably learn to be that kind of a cat
• 4:44
Speaker 2: or probably to do well with with dogs or kids
• 4:48
  Speaker 2: or whatever.
• 4:49
Speaker 5: Yeah, absolutely. I agree. I always tell people, like, if
• 4:52
Speaker 5: you don't like cats, you've just not met the right cat.
• 4:54
  Speaker 8: Right.
• 4:54
Speaker 5: Because when you meet the right cat, it will totally
• 4:57
Speaker 5: change your opinion. on cats and how they move and operate,
• 5:01
  Speaker 5: if you will.
• 5:02
Speaker 2: Yeah, the only thing is, and I guess dogs are
• 5:04
Speaker 2: this way too, I greatly question my decision to be
• 5:08
Speaker 2: a cat dad when at 5 a.m. seven days a week,
• 5:12
Speaker 2: I'm greeted with a cat. So sleeping in, not happening
• 5:15
Speaker 2: in my house. I mean, it's probably the same if
• 5:17
Speaker 2: you have dogs too. All right, tomorrow's the big day.
• 5:20
Speaker 2: Kegs for canines at the Red Carpet Lounge. Are there
• 5:22
Speaker 2: tickets left? Can you get them a door? What's the story?
• 5:26
Speaker 5: There are tickets left. You can purchase tickets at the
• 5:28
Speaker 5: door as well. But to make sure nobody, you know,
• 5:33
Speaker 5: that we don't sell out before tomorrow and you get
• 5:36
Speaker 5: to the door, I would go ahead and purchase them
• 5:38
Speaker 5: now if you plan on coming. But as long as
• 5:40
Speaker 5: we have tickets in stock, you can purchase them at
• 5:43
  Speaker 5: the door.
• 5:43
Speaker 2: It starts at 4 o'clock tomorrow. And, again, this is
• 5:46
Speaker 2: a great, great event over at the Red Carpet Lounge
• 5:48
Speaker 2: on Elizabeth Street in Charleston. Kegs for canines. You'll have
• 5:52
Speaker 2: the caravan there with some pets that people can look
• 5:55
Speaker 2: at adopting. We actually have seen pets adopted on site
• 5:59
Speaker 2: in years past. How much are the tickets, by the way?
• 6:02
Speaker 2: I probably should ask that.
• 6:04
Speaker 5: You asked me too fast. I believe 50.
• 6:08
Speaker 2: It's all available on your Facebook page and on your
• 6:11
Speaker 2: website as well. And, of course, the Red Carpet Lounge.
• 6:14
Speaker 2: You know, great place. If you want to go inside,
• 6:16
Speaker 2: because it's going to be a little bit warm tomorrow,
• 6:17
Speaker 2: you can go inside. You can stay outside of the
• 6:19
Speaker 2: Tiki Bar area. There's college football this weekend, so the
• 6:23
Speaker 2: games will be turned on. It's just a great, great event.
• 6:27
Speaker 2: You get giveaways of all kinds. It's one of your
• 6:29
Speaker 2: two or three really signature events of the year, Angie.
• 6:33
Speaker 5: Yeah, absolutely. And again, it's the easiest way to help
• 6:37
Speaker 5: our shelter pets. You know, you come, you enjoy your evening,
• 6:40
Speaker 5: you drink beer, you pet some dogs. And like I said,
• 6:43
Speaker 5: all proceeds go to help animals that are still in
• 6:46
Speaker 5: our care at KCHA. So by far the easiest way.
• 6:49
Speaker 2: To help us out. Now, if somebody wanted to stop
• 6:51
Speaker 2: by and make, because I know we talk every week
• 6:54
Speaker 2: about how you folks are always in need of your
• 6:57
Speaker 2: of the foods and the blankets, towel, whatever. Can people
• 7:02
Speaker 2: just drop those off there? I mean, will you accept donations?
• 7:05
Speaker 5: Yeah, absolutely. We'll have the caravan trailer with us so
• 7:07
Speaker 5: we can haul any amount of donations back with us.
• 7:10
Speaker 5: So if you simply want to just stop by, see
• 7:13
Speaker 5: the animals, and make a donation, you can absolutely do
• 7:16
  Speaker 5: that as well.
• 7:17
Speaker 2: I do want to mention you have, I think, a
• 7:19
Speaker 2: drive-through vaccine clinic I saw today, right?
• 7:22
  Speaker 5: We do have a drive-thru vaccine clinic from 9 a.m.
• 7:24
Speaker 5: to 3 p.m. Fix Charleston is hosting that at Pet
• 7:27
Speaker 5: Supplies Plus in St. Albans in the parking lot. So
• 7:31
Speaker 5: if you just drive to that parking lot, you'll see them,
• 7:34
Speaker 5: and you can get some core vaccinations for your pet
• 7:36
  Speaker 5: for free.
• 7:37
  Speaker 1: There you go.
• 7:37
Speaker 2: There you go. So if that's been what's holding you back,
• 7:40
Speaker 2: you can do it free today. And, you know, Angie,
• 7:42
Speaker 2: I love the relationships you guys have with our friends
• 7:45
Speaker 2: and businesses in the community. I saw that you were
• 7:47
Speaker 2: doing something with artistic creations, custom tattoos and piercings.
• 7:52
Speaker 5: Yes, Artistic Creations, they came to us and thought of
• 7:55
Speaker 5: a very unique way to give back to their community.
• 7:59
Speaker 5: So essentially, if you donate an item to the shelter,
• 8:02
Speaker 5: it can simply be just one thing. But if you
• 8:05
Speaker 5: make a donation to us at KCHA and mention their
• 8:10
Speaker 5: name or the event that is going on, we give
• 8:14
Speaker 5: you a voucher and Artistic Creations is going to give
• 8:16
Speaker 5: you a free tattoo, which is... absolutely just like one
• 8:21
Speaker 5: of the most unique things I've ever heard and a
• 8:23
Speaker 5: great incentive to get our community involved.
• 8:26
Speaker 2: And I want to talk about, I saw you had
• 8:28
Speaker 2: some really, really good looking t-shirts with the folks at
• 8:30
Speaker 2: Ellen's Ice Cream. Talk about that.
• 8:33
Speaker 5: We love our relationship with Ellen's. This is something that's
• 8:36
Speaker 5: a few years in the making at this point. But
• 8:39
Speaker 5: Ellen's has a shirt simply for our partnership with KCHA
• 8:44
Speaker 5: or their partnership with KCHA. All proceeds of that shirt
• 8:48
Speaker 5: and all sales of that shirt go back into helping
• 8:51
Speaker 5: shelter pets just like your Kegs for Canines ticket does.
• 8:55
Speaker 5: And Ellen's also hosts our Doggy Day Out visitors for
• 9:00
Speaker 5: Pub Cups and just like a cool place to relax.
• 9:03
Speaker 5: So we're also very thankful for our relationship with Ellen.
• 9:06
Speaker 2: Now, can you get those shirts at Ellen's or on
• 9:08
Speaker 2: your website, or where do you get those shirts?
• 9:10
Speaker 5: You will get those shirts from Ellen's.
• 9:12
Speaker 2: Okay, Ellen's. All the more reason with the weather, you know,
• 9:15
Speaker 2: the hot weather that's back in the forecast again for
• 9:17
Speaker 2: you to go get some ice cream there. All right,
• 9:19
Speaker 2: here's your final, this is your final opportunity to sell
• 9:22
Speaker 2: people on coming out and joining us for Kegs for
• 9:24
  Speaker 2: Canines tomorrow.
• 9:25
  Speaker 4: Go.
• 9:26
  Speaker 6: All right.
• 9:28
Speaker 5: As somebody who has enjoyed Kegs for Canons for the
• 9:31
Speaker 5: last few years, live music, also a DJ this year,
• 9:35
Speaker 5: which is really fun that we're having both of those.
• 9:39
Speaker 5: um again drinking beer petting dogs getting to help shelter
• 9:42
Speaker 5: pets and all for the price of fifty dollars um
• 9:45
Speaker 5: every single cent of that goes back into helping shelter
• 9:48
  Speaker 5: pets it's supposed to be a nice evening 4 p.m
• 9:51
Speaker 5: to 7 p.m so the night you're not going to
• 9:53
Speaker 5: be out very late either and we're picking the list
• 9:56
Speaker 5: of animals to bring with us as we speak and
• 9:59
Speaker 5: we have some cute that you do not want to
• 10:01
Speaker 5: miss going to the event with us.
• 10:02
Speaker 2: And that's a big part of it, because as I said,
• 10:04
Speaker 2: I have seen in the years I've done this event, Angie,
• 10:07
Speaker 2: I've seen people come in just to hang out, and
• 10:11
Speaker 2: they leave with a friend, and that's a pretty cool thing,
• 10:14
Speaker 2: and it's all happening tomorrow at the Red Carpet Lounge.
• 10:16
Speaker 2: You get details on your website and also on your
• 10:18
Speaker 2: social media as well, Fortal7. Steve Animal and I from 98.7
• 10:21
Speaker 2: The Mountain Wild and Wonderful Classic Rock will be down there.
• 10:24
Speaker 2: Angie is always looking forward to seeing you, and we
• 10:26
Speaker 2: will talk again. I'll see you tomorrow, but we'll talk
• 10:29
Speaker 2: again next week. Thanks a lot.
• 10:30
Speaker 5: Sounds great. Have a good one.
• 10:32
  Speaker 9: All right.
• 10:33
Speaker 2: Our Adopt Me Please Pet of the Week, again, from
• 10:34
Speaker 2: the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association, Leopard Shark. And I failed to
• 10:39
Speaker 2: ask about the origin of the name. Ryan, is that
• 10:42
Speaker 2: something you can– leopard shark, anything?
• 10:43
  Speaker 8: Okay.
• 10:43
Speaker 2: Because occasionally Angie and Ryan kind of live in this
• 10:46
Speaker 2: world where they talk about things I don't know what
• 10:48
Speaker 2: they're talking about. But that's not one Ryan can help
• 10:50
Speaker 2: me with. Leopard shark is a beautiful kitten, two months old.
• 10:54
Speaker 2: She was found with her siblings hiding under a car.
• 10:58
Speaker 2: she's young, so she'll probably be able to adapt to
• 11:01
Speaker 2: any situation or family. She's not spayed yet, but she
• 11:04
Speaker 2: will be before you take her home. Go over to
• 11:06
Speaker 2: Dave Allen Radio on Facebook or the WCHS Network Facebook
• 11:10
Speaker 2: page or at Dave870 on X. Take a look at
• 11:13
Speaker 2: Leopard Shark, I should say. Beautiful, beautiful kitten. I mean,
• 11:18
Speaker 2: it really is a beautiful kitten. If you're wanting one
• 11:21
Speaker 2: that's got a little unique color to it, as Angie said,
• 11:24
Speaker 2: Go get this cat. It is a beautiful creature indeed.
• 11:27
Speaker 2: And that is this week's Adopt Me, Please Spend of
• 11:29
Speaker 2: the Week. And it's brought to you by the folks
• 11:31
Speaker 2: at Homeless Devon Interiors, family-owned, proudly serving the community for
• 11:34
Speaker 2: over 50 years, specializing in custom blinds, shades, shutters, upholstery.
• 11:38
Speaker 2: and beautifully crafted sewn goods, homes to hospitals, classrooms to
• 11:41
Speaker 2: commercial spaces. They can do it all. Access to the
• 11:43
Speaker 2: top designer fabrics and smart motorization options as well. 516
• 11:47
Speaker 2: D Street, located in South Charleston. Coming up a little
• 11:50
Speaker 2: bit later on the show, yeah, we're going to get
• 11:51
Speaker 2: into this Kanawha County Commission situation. We have stories posted
• 11:54
Speaker 2: about it online. Very unique, to say the least. If
• 11:58
Speaker 2: you thought we were going to have a county commissioner
• 12:00
Speaker 2: to replace Lance Wheeler after the meeting, well, you would
• 12:02
Speaker 2: be mistaken because, well, they couldn't. It didn't get it
• 12:06
Speaker 2: done last night, and we'll talk about that coming up
• 12:07
Speaker 2: a little bit later on. Also, Charleston Distance Run, a
• 12:09
Speaker 2: little conversation about that, too. And I'm going to introduce
• 12:12
Speaker 2: you after the break to an organization that's been doing,
• 12:15
Speaker 2: I mean, awesome things in southern West Virginia for a
• 12:18
Speaker 2: number of years, and now they've expanded into the Kanawha Valley.
• 12:20
Speaker 2: We'll talk about that when we come back on The
• 12:23
Speaker 2: Voice of Charleston, WCHS.
• 12:25
Speaker 1: Brought to you by the Eric J. Tarr Family Businesses.
• 12:28

Speaker 3: They say roads are made for journeys, not destinations. And
• 13:05
Speaker 3: now that I'm retired, I make a point to journey
• 13:08
Speaker 3: as much as I can. But when night driving became
• 13:10
Speaker 3: a challenge, my son and I decided it was time
• 13:13
Speaker 3: for a doctor's visit to ensure my safety behind the wheel.
• 13:16
Speaker 3: I was worried, but instead of restrictions, we discussed solutions

Speaker 12: You need Foster Construction, your foundation repair experts. Locally owned
• 13:43
Speaker 12: and operated, Foster Construction offers free inspections and estimates and
• 13:46
Speaker 12: has a licensed professional engineer on staff.
• 13:49
Speaker 1: Their services include basement.
• 13:50
  Speaker 2: And crawl space.
• 13:52
  Speaker 7: Yeah!
• 13:52
  Speaker 8: Yeah!
• 14:14
Speaker 2: Welcome back to the show. It is 923. The Dave
• 14:16
Speaker 2: Allen Show on 580 Live brought to you in part
• 14:18
Speaker 2: by the Charleston Dirty Birds. They continue their homestand tonight.
• 14:21
Speaker 2: They're taking on Lancaster. Going to be a busy weekend
• 14:23
Speaker 2: at Go Mart Ballpark. You can bring your dogs out
• 14:26
Speaker 2: tonight for Bark in the Park. Tomorrow night, we talked
• 14:28
Speaker 2: about on the show yesterday, a celebration of labor with
• 14:30
Speaker 2: the West Virginia AFL-CIO and the Building and Construction Trades
• 14:33
Speaker 2: in Charleston and West Virginia with fireworks after the game.
• 14:36
Speaker 2: Then on Sunday, Family Fun Day, 1234 First Pitch. Kids

Speaker 2: 12 and under get in for free. Check out dirtybirdsbaseball.com.
• 14:43
Speaker 2: I want to tell you about an organization that I've
• 14:44
Speaker 2: known about pretty much my entire life because it got
• 14:48
Speaker 2: started in Logan County, but now that they've expanded into
• 14:50
Speaker 2: Kanawha County, it's called Pride Community Services. Carrie Boggs is
• 14:54
Speaker 2: with the group, and she joins us this morning in
• 14:55
Speaker 2: the General Construction Studios.
• 14:56
  Speaker 1: Good morning, Carrie.
• 14:57
Speaker 2: Welcome to the show.
• 14:58
Speaker 7: Good morning. Thank you for having me.
• 14:59
Speaker 2: Tell us what this organization does.
• 15:02
Speaker 7: So for Kanawha County, what Pride offers for individuals and
• 15:07
Speaker 7: families is is a different number of things through our
• 15:09
Speaker 7: case management. It can range as any kind of barrier
• 15:12
Speaker 7: they may have. It can start as small as you
• 15:15
Speaker 7: have a utility termination notice or you get an eviction
• 15:17
Speaker 7: and you're in that little bind where you just need
• 15:20
Speaker 7: that little help, that little push to get you through.
• 15:22
Speaker 7: We can assist with that. And we can even help
• 15:24
Speaker 7: with employment support. So let's say if you're starting to
• 15:26
Speaker 7: work and you need stilto boots, certain tools, different things
• 15:31
Speaker 7: that are needed for that first day of work, we
• 15:34
Speaker 7: can help facilitate that and get that ordered for them.
• 15:37
Speaker 7: We even offer bus passes. We're even working on vehicle repair.
• 15:40
Speaker 7: We know that there's a lot of barriers in Kanawha County,
• 15:43
Speaker 7: and we're working on to improve and create new programs
• 15:47
Speaker 7: that can help fill those gaps.
• 15:50
Speaker 2: So how long has this been up and running in
• 15:51
  Speaker 2: Kanawha County?
• 15:52
Speaker 7: So Kanawha County is pretty new. I want to say
• 15:55
Speaker 7: we're coming up on a year of actual direct services.
• 15:59
Speaker 7: We've been in Logan County since March.
• 16:01
Speaker 8: Gosh, about the 50s.
• 16:03
Speaker 2: You were actually giving me history that I didn't know
• 16:06
Speaker 2: because when I was at the radio station I worked
• 16:07
Speaker 2: at in Logan, we had a great relationship with the
• 16:09
Speaker 2: folks at the Pride program. We did live broadcasts with them,
• 16:13
Speaker 2: had them on my show down there. And I was
• 16:16
Speaker 2: telling you, I said, look, I'll be 56 next month.
• 16:19
Speaker 2: And this organization has been around since I was a kid.
• 16:23
Speaker 2: You were telling me, though, the background that I didn't know.
• 16:25
Speaker 2: Give the folks some of the background on how this
• 16:27
  Speaker 2: thing got started.
• 16:28
Speaker 7: Yeah, so Pride Community Services started in Logan County actually
• 16:32
Speaker 7: as a women's club. It was called the Women's Club
• 16:34
Speaker 7: of Logan. They helped the local minors and the families
• 16:39
Speaker 7: involved with a different number of things, shoes, clothing, really
• 16:43
Speaker 7: anything if they're in a bind. But when 1964 came
• 16:47
Speaker 7: around and Lyndon B. Johnson did the War on Poverty,
• 16:50
Speaker 7: they actually became the first community action agency in West Virginia.
• 16:54
Speaker 7: So they've been operating as Pride Community Services since then,
• 16:59
Speaker 7: and they've grown into a huge help for Logan County,
• 17:03
Speaker 7: and we hope to achieve that in Kanawha County, too.
• 17:05
Speaker 2: I mean, I've seen firsthand the thing that they do,
• 17:07
Speaker 2: and it would be easier, Carrie, to give a list
• 17:09
Speaker 2: of things that they don't do, because as you said,
• 17:11
Speaker 2: I mean, they can help with somebody's Somebody's been hired
• 17:15
Speaker 2: for a job and, you know, they don't have what
• 17:18
Speaker 2: they need for that job. There are opportunities, as you said,
• 17:21
Speaker 2: you know, I got to have a set of tools.
• 17:22
Speaker 2: I got to have steel-toed boots. I got to have whatever.
• 17:25
Speaker 2: They can help with that. I'm not going to go
• 17:26
Speaker 2: out and say that they're going to guarantee that you're
• 17:28
Speaker 2: going to get that, but they're going to at least
• 17:29
Speaker 2: help you in that process.
• 17:31
Speaker 7: Yeah, we do an eligibility screening. There's a couple of
• 17:34
Speaker 7: things that can make a person qualified for our services.
• 17:37
Speaker 7: So we always encourage people to either call the main
• 17:40
Speaker 7: line to see if they're eligible for that assistance. And
• 17:43
Speaker 7: you can always apply online on loganpride.com. And we're also hiring, too.
• 17:49
  Speaker 4: Okay.
• 17:49
Speaker 2: What are you hiring for?
• 17:50
Speaker 7: Well, we are hiring for two different positions. The first
• 17:53
Speaker 7: position is a program support specialist. That would be the
• 17:55
Speaker 7: person that actually screens the clients for eligibility and applies
• 17:59
Speaker 7: for the services and checks on them through our case management.
• 18:03
Speaker 7: We're also hiring through the LifeBridge AmeriCorps. We're in partnership
• 18:07
Speaker 7: with them to help with financial literacy, case management as well.
• 18:14
Speaker 7: and they can always apply online at loganpride.com through that
• 18:17
  Speaker 7: as well.
• 18:18
Speaker 2: It is a fantastic organization. I mean, it really, really is,
• 18:21
Speaker 2: and I've seen firsthand the things that it's done for
• 18:24
Speaker 2: people of all ages. There's a lot of senior services involved.
• 18:27
Speaker 2: I know in the one in Logan, do you have
• 18:29
Speaker 2: that here in Kanawha County yet, or are you working
• 18:30
  Speaker 2: on that?
• 18:31
Speaker 7: We are working on that. There's a lot of programs
• 18:33
Speaker 7: that we are cooking and trying to help facilitate. Very soon.
• 18:38
Speaker 2: Well, and again, you're just getting it kind of up
• 18:40
  Speaker 2: and running here. I mean, they've got about a 60-year
• 18:43
Speaker 2: head start on you down in Logan County, but it
• 18:46
Speaker 2: will definitely be used, I'm sure, a lot here in
• 18:49
Speaker 2: Kanawha County. Do you have a physical location in Kanawha County?
• 18:52
  Speaker 8: Yes.
• 18:52
Speaker 7: We're inside the American Job Center down on Leon Sullivan Way.
• 18:56
Speaker 7: It's right near the Capital Market, so it's a pretty
• 18:58
Speaker 7: central location, and it's really useful because there are other
• 19:01
Speaker 7: agencies within that same building. So one person may use
• 19:05
Speaker 7: us for one service and may go down to, for example,
• 19:07
Speaker 7: Workforce West Virginia, Workforce Development, Jobs and Hope. There's a
• 19:11
Speaker 7: lot of different agencies that work together and collaborate to
• 19:14
Speaker 7: help this person get through whatever they need to achieve self-sufficiency.
• 19:19
Speaker 2: Kind of a one-stop shop, you might say.
• 19:21
  Speaker 8: Yeah.
• 19:22
Speaker 2: In your time of being there, and I know we
• 19:23
Speaker 2: don't want you to mention names or anything, but give
• 19:26
Speaker 2: me an example of some things that you have seen firsthand.
• 19:31
Speaker 7: Firsthand, we've helped with the different Different people, different walks
• 19:34
Speaker 7: of life. The one that's affected me the most in
• 19:38
Speaker 7: a really positive way is we helped somebody get out
• 19:41
Speaker 7: of a domestic situation. We were able to help them
• 19:43
Speaker 7: get into a shelter. We were able to help them
• 19:46
Speaker 7: move it and get that along to get them out
• 19:48
Speaker 7: of that that dangerous situation and along with that we
• 19:51
Speaker 7: kind of helped them with some bills and everything we
• 19:53
Speaker 7: we try to help with just more than one thing
• 19:56
Speaker 7: while we have them in our office we know that
• 19:59
Speaker 7: there's so many different facets to barriers and we want
• 20:04
Speaker 7: to try to tackle as much as we can while
• 20:06
Speaker 7: we have them Because a lot of people don't realize
• 20:08
Speaker 7: the barriers in their life is so normal to them.
• 20:11
Speaker 7: They don't even realize that it could be resolved. And
• 20:13
Speaker 7: so we were trying to help people see themselves and
• 20:17
  Speaker 7: see the potential.
• 20:18
Speaker 2: Sometimes people have been in a situation, Carrie, for so
• 20:20
Speaker 2: long that it becomes the new normal, to use an
• 20:23
Speaker 2: overused cliche. And they think, well, this is what my
• 20:26
Speaker 2: life is going to be. And it doesn't have to
• 20:28
Speaker 2: be that way. I mean, you can rise above that,
• 20:31
Speaker 2: rise out of it, you know, with the help of.
• 20:34
Speaker 2: A family, your peer groups, people around you and services
• 20:38
  Speaker 2: like this.
• 20:38
Speaker 7: Yeah, absolutely. I agree. A lot of people don't realize
• 20:42
Speaker 7: the situations they're in or they're normal. And we're going
• 20:45
Speaker 7: to help, you know, show them that there's more to
• 20:49
Speaker 7: life than just that.
• 20:50
  Speaker 1: Right.
• 20:51
Speaker 2: We carry bogs again. Pride Community Services 929. Energy demand
• 20:55
Speaker 2: is rising fast. A meeting that starts right here in
• 20:57
Speaker 2: West Virginia. More than 75 years of experience.
• 21:00
  Speaker 1: T.C.
• 21:00
Speaker 2: Energy proudly operates a 2300 mile Columbia gas transmission system,
• 21:04
Speaker 2: investing in local communities, supporting jobs and helping deliver the
• 21:07
Speaker 2: reliable natural gas that powers homes, businesses and industries across
• 21:11
Speaker 2: the state. Because when West Virginia grows, America grows. grows
• 21:14
Speaker 2: tc energy energy connected learn more at tc energy.com do
• 21:18
Speaker 2: you have volunteers uh that you need for the organization
• 21:21
Speaker 2: because i know there's a big part of the one
• 21:22
Speaker 2: in logan they were or they were you know looking
• 21:24
Speaker 2: for folks just to come and volunteer to help out
• 21:26
Speaker 2: a little bit as of.
• 21:27
Speaker 7: Right now i've not gotten word of that but that
• 21:29
Speaker 7: doesn't mean that's not going to happen in the future
• 21:31
Speaker 7: um especially as we're going to open more programs and
• 21:36
Speaker 7: um we are also looking if somebody needs in-home services
• 21:41
  Speaker 7: So that.
• 21:42
  Speaker 6: Could be something.
• 21:42
Speaker 2: Like what kind of in-home services?
• 21:43
Speaker 7: So in-home services are for people, seniors or people with
• 21:47
Speaker 7: certain disabilities that want to stay in the home. They
• 21:50
Speaker 7: don't want to have to move into a nursing home.
• 21:53
Speaker 7: Our goal was to keep them in their house, help
• 21:55
Speaker 7: them be independent. There's a worker that would come and
• 21:59
Speaker 7: help them with bathing, clothing.
• 22:00
Speaker 2: Just kind of checking on them. Just checking on them.
• 22:02
Speaker 7: And we actually were hiring for that position for direct
• 22:05
Speaker 7: care workers. But a family member can actually be hired online.
• 22:09
Speaker 7: To help that individual so they can get paid to
• 22:12
Speaker 7: also take care of them. Because a lot of people,
• 22:15
Speaker 7: you know, they're in positions where they've got to help
• 22:17
Speaker 7: their family members and they have to quit their jobs.
• 22:19
Speaker 7: They have to work completely around that.
• 22:22
Speaker 2: Can't do it all.
• 22:23
Speaker 7: Can't do it all. So we're also there to help
• 22:25
  Speaker 7: with that, too.
• 22:26
  Speaker 1: All right.
• 22:26
Speaker 2: Give us your website for more information or social media.
• 22:29
Speaker 2: What's the best way for people to contact you?
• 22:30
Speaker 7: The best way for people to contact us for a
• 22:33
Speaker 7: different number of things or even just information would be LoganPride.com.
• 22:38
Speaker 7: And also our main phone number, which is 304-752-6868. All right.
• 22:45
Speaker 2: Well, now that you're here in Kanawha County, you may
• 22:47
Speaker 2: have to get a new website. You realize that, right?
• 22:49
  Speaker 11: I know.
• 22:51
Speaker 7: We get that a lot.
• 22:52
  Speaker 6: Well, I mean, you've been.
• 22:54
Speaker 2: There for so many years, and now you've made the
• 22:56
Speaker 2: decision to expand your services over here. I mean, who
• 22:58
Speaker 2: knows where it goes from here? Because you have success here.
• 23:01
Speaker 2: It goes to Clay County, Rowan County. Who knows where
• 23:03
  Speaker 2: it goes next?
• 23:04
Speaker 7: Oh, absolutely. And I'm looking forward to it.
• 23:06
Speaker 2: All right, Carrie. Very nice to meet you, and I
• 23:07
Speaker 2: appreciate you being on the program here today because, as
• 23:10
Speaker 2: I said, when you folks reached out to me, I said, yeah,
• 23:12
Speaker 2: I'm very familiar with this program because it started in
• 23:15
Speaker 2: Logan County years and years and years ago. Now it's
• 23:17
Speaker 2: expanded to Kanawha County, and you folks just do some
• 23:19
Speaker 2: amazing things. I appreciate you being here.
• 23:21
  Speaker 7: Of course.
• 23:21
Speaker 2: Thanks a lot. Hang out with me here just one second.
• 23:23

Speaker 2: Morgan & Morgan America's largest injury law firm. What are
• 25:19
  Speaker 2: you doing?
• 25:19
Speaker 8: I'm not seeing it. I'm not hearing anything.
• 25:21
Speaker 2: Well, just be all right. You'll be all right.
• 25:24
  Speaker 1: It's fine.
• 25:25
  Speaker 5: You're good.
• 25:26
Speaker 2: You're all right. What about now?
• 25:29
  Speaker 8: No.
• 25:31
Speaker 2: What have you broken?
• 25:32
  Speaker 10: I don't know. I just moved.
• 25:34
Speaker 2: Stop touching buttons. Every time the girls come into the studio,
• 25:39
Speaker 2: we have this. We may have a little short over there.
• 25:41
Speaker 2: You don't need to wear the headphones anyway, so you're fine.
• 25:43
Speaker 2: You can take them off there. All right. Jost and
• 25:45
Speaker 2: Distance Run is coming up September the 4th and 5th
• 25:47
Speaker 2: here in the Capital City. Our good friends Tricia and
• 25:49
Speaker 2: Carol are here to talk about it. How are you doing, girls?
• 25:52
  Speaker 4: We're doing great.
• 25:54
Speaker 2: We're off to a great start. So the distance run
• 25:58
Speaker 2: is coming up. It's next week.
• 26:00
  Speaker 8: Yes.
• 26:00
Speaker 2: All right. Talk about it. Either one of you.
• 26:02
Speaker 4: September 5th is the actual race day in Saturday, and
• 26:07
Speaker 4: we're hoping for good weather. Our packet pickup is Friday,
• 26:11
Speaker 4: September 4th, down at Haddad Park, and that starts from
• 26:15
Speaker 4: 3 until 8. So come on down, and we have
• 26:18
  Speaker 4: a kids' run at 6.30 p.m.
• 26:20
Speaker 2: And that's why we say, because, you know, when we
• 26:23
Speaker 2: had you girls on before, we were talking about it
• 26:25
Speaker 2: being September the 4th and the 5th. You think that's,
• 26:27
Speaker 2: even for you guys, that's a long run. Okay. But
• 26:30
Speaker 2: there's a lot of activities that go on on your
• 26:31
Speaker 2: packet pickup days, you said, with the kids running and
• 26:33
Speaker 2: so on and so forth. Talk about that.
• 26:35
Speaker 8: We have a pasta party to get everybody carved up
• 26:39
Speaker 8: for the race. And we also have, like Carol said,
• 26:43
Speaker 8: the kids run. So, That's pretty fun for everybody as
• 26:47
Speaker 8: well as getting your packet and your bib. And there's
• 26:51
Speaker 8: a sign-making station so you can stop by and make
• 26:55
Speaker 8: some cheerful signs to root on your favorite runners and walkers.
• 26:59
Speaker 2: And the Charleston Distance Run has been going on for
• 27:00
  Speaker 2: how long?
• 27:01
  Speaker 4: 53 years.
• 27:02
  Speaker 2: 53 years.
• 27:04
  Speaker 4: Yes.
• 27:04
Speaker 2: And it started, I know a little bit about it
• 27:06
Speaker 2: in talking to you folks and some other people as well.
• 27:08
Speaker 2: I mean, what can you tell people about the early
• 27:11
Speaker 2: days of this thing? Because it started out a lot smaller.
• 27:13
  Speaker 8: It did.
• 27:14
  Speaker 7: It did.
• 27:15
Speaker 4: When they started the regatta, they wanted a little extra
• 27:19
Speaker 4: things to go with it, so they asked the community,
• 27:21
Speaker 4: and some gentlemen went through the community and ran, and
• 27:26
Speaker 4: the course that they came up with was 15 miles.
• 27:29
Speaker 4: And so that's how it kind of became 15-mile race.
• 27:32
Speaker 4: And over the course of the years, we've had numerous
• 27:36
Speaker 4: famous people have ran it. And so Jeff Galloway is—
• 27:42
Speaker 4: We are kind of honoring him. He was our first
• 27:45
Speaker 4: official winner in 1973, and he passed this year.
• 27:48
  Speaker 2: Oh, okay.
• 27:49
Speaker 4: So he's very well known for a run-walk training down
• 27:55
Speaker 4: in Florida, and he's written many books and went on
• 27:58
Speaker 4: to be a really wonderful athlete. So we're kind of
• 28:02
Speaker 4: honoring him on our T-shirt this year.
• 28:05
Speaker 8: Yeah, the shirts are awesome, Dave.
• 28:07
Speaker 2: I mean— Can you step in a little closer here
• 28:09
Speaker 2: to me? Yes, sorry. You're fine.
• 28:12
Speaker 8: The t-shirts this year are awesome. They're more than, I
• 28:16
Speaker 8: don't know, there's just so many cool parts of the t-shirt.
• 28:20
Speaker 8: And on the back, we actually have the 15-mile course.
• 28:24
Speaker 8: And so it's a little bit different. Actually, it's really
• 28:27
Speaker 8: different than any of the shirts we've done before.
• 28:31
Speaker 2: All right. Take us through the actual route, the race route.
• 28:36
Speaker 4: The actual route. So on Saturday, September 5th, if you
• 28:40
Speaker 4: hear any of these places um please come out and
• 28:44
Speaker 4: join the fun and activities and cheer on our runners
• 28:47
Speaker 4: and walkers um because all that energy is very helpful
• 28:52
Speaker 4: um we start at the capital complex at 7 30
• 28:55
Speaker 4: both the 5k and the relay and the 15 mile
• 28:58
Speaker 4: all start at the capital complex we are very fortunate
• 29:02
Speaker 4: to have brady campbell with a former mountaineer he will
• 29:05
Speaker 4: start us off um vinyl village um DJ Mark Davis
• 29:10
Speaker 4: will have some live music for us. So you go
• 29:15
Speaker 4: down the boulevard at Dunbar Street. The 5K will turn
• 29:19
Speaker 4: right there, and they'll end up on Virginia and work
• 29:22
Speaker 4: their way over to Lately Field for the 5K. But
• 29:25
Speaker 4: the 15-mile, we end up turning at the new TCI
• 29:29
Speaker 4: Energy building. Clendenin Street. It's up Clendenin Street. And then
• 29:36
Speaker 4: we turn down Virginia, go across Southside Bridge. We work
• 29:40
Speaker 4: our way over to 119, and we go up that
• 29:44
  Speaker 4: mile hill.
• 29:45
Speaker 8: Also known as Punishment.
• 29:46
  Speaker 14: Yeah.
• 29:47
  Speaker 4: Punishment Hill.
• 29:49
  Speaker 2: It's very long.
• 29:49
Speaker 4: And we turn left on Oakwood, and we eventually get
• 29:54
Speaker 4: to Loudoun Heights and go down Loudoun Heights Road, come
• 29:59
Speaker 4: back to— Southside Bridge, we work our way, we kind
• 30:03
Speaker 4: of go down Virginia, we go through the Capitol Complex.
• 30:07
Speaker 4: We are very fortunate to have University of Charleston students
• 30:12
Speaker 4: throughout our packet pickup and through our race day, through
• 30:16
Speaker 4: their labor of love volunteers. So we will have the
• 30:20
Speaker 4: University of Charleston's men's basketball team out there helping us
• 30:24
  Speaker 4: cheer them on.
• 30:24
Speaker 6: And they're awesome, Dave.
• 30:26
Speaker 8: Last year, they were bringing the party down at the
• 30:30
Speaker 8: Capitol Complex. Like, they were Like shouting and screaming and
• 30:34
Speaker 8: like pounding the ground.
• 30:36
Speaker 6: I mean, they were on it.
• 30:37
Speaker 8: And we were like all on.
• 30:38
Speaker 2: We were loving that.
• 30:39
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 30:39
Speaker 8: So bring that back.
• 30:40
Speaker 4: So we end up on the boulevard. You make a
• 30:44
Speaker 4: right back on Core.
• 30:47
  Speaker 8: No.
• 30:48
Speaker 4: On Clinton Street. We basically find our way back over
• 30:51
  Speaker 4: to Piedmont.
• 30:52
Speaker 2: Eventually you'll find your way back. You won't get lost.
• 30:55
Speaker 8: There'll be plenty of people out there.
• 30:56
Speaker 2: How many people do you get on average that take
• 30:58
  Speaker 2: part in this?
• 31:00
Speaker 8: I think I checked last night. In all, it was 665.
• 31:04
Speaker 8: But back in the day, there was well over 1,000 people.
• 31:07
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 31:08
Speaker 4: We currently have some other runners that we know of.
• 31:12
Speaker 4: We have over 700 right now, cumulative.
• 31:16
Speaker 2: And they come from everywhere. I mean, this is not
• 31:18
Speaker 2: just Charleston folks. They're from everywhere.
• 31:20
  Speaker 4: That is correct.
• 31:21
  Speaker 5: We have.
• 31:22
Speaker 4: A lady from Hawaii, Florida. So we have quite.
• 31:26
  Speaker 2: A few people.
• 31:27
Speaker 8: Puerto Rico this year, too.
• 31:28
Speaker 2: Yeah, Puerto Rico. And a lot of these people don't
• 31:31
Speaker 2: necessarily have ties to the area. I mean, they just
• 31:34
Speaker 2: hear about it. They read about it online and they
• 31:36
Speaker 2: say that sounds like a cool one to do because
• 31:37
  Speaker 2: there's a lot of people.
• 31:38
  Speaker 6: That do that.
• 31:39
Speaker 2: They just, they, they just say, well, this sounds like
• 31:41
Speaker 2: it'd be, they look at the, at the race route
• 31:43
Speaker 2: and they think, well, this one in Indianapolis looks like
• 31:45
Speaker 2: it'd be fun. Well, we'll go to Indianapolis and run
• 31:46
  Speaker 2: a race.
• 31:47
Speaker 8: Well, and also because 15 miles is, is kind of
• 31:50
Speaker 8: a rare, there's only one other 15 mile race in
• 31:54
Speaker 8: the country. And I've done that one too. It's in
• 31:57
Speaker 8: South Dakota, but, um, it's definitely not as cool as
• 32:01
Speaker 8: this one. It's two turns basically. And it's, um, So
• 32:05
Speaker 8: 15 miles is definitely rare because usually you have the
• 32:09
Speaker 8: half marathon, which is 13.1, or the marathon, which is 26.2.
• 32:15
Speaker 8: But the 15 miler is like the sweet spot. It's
• 32:18
Speaker 8: right before you start crumbling, or I should say before
• 32:21
Speaker 8: I start crumbling on a marathon. So the 15 miler
• 32:25
Speaker 8: is a good. It's good because you got the 13.1.
• 32:29
Speaker 8: You know you can do that if you've done a
• 32:31
Speaker 8: half marathon. But those two last miles can be Just brutal.
• 32:37
Speaker 8: I mean, because you want to be over with. Yeah.
• 32:39
Speaker 8: And the last two miles are sometimes the hardest. But,
• 32:41
Speaker 8: you know, you can do it if you just put
• 32:43
Speaker 8: your mind to it.
• 32:44
Speaker 2: Yeah. There you go. All right. Now, do you still
• 32:46
Speaker 2: need sponsors? I mean, can you still take on some
• 32:48
  Speaker 2: sponsors here?
• 32:50
Speaker 4: You know, we can always take on sponsors. Our T-shirts
• 32:53
Speaker 4: are printed and our signs are printed.
• 32:55
Speaker 2: There's so many ways that people could help, too. As
• 32:58
Speaker 2: you said, volunteers and things of that nature. You talked
• 33:00
Speaker 2: about the buy-in from the University of Charleston. That's great. But,
• 33:03
Speaker 2: I mean, you can always use more volunteers, I suppose, right?
• 33:05
  Speaker 1: Yes.
• 33:05
Speaker 4: And we could always use– if someone has a boom
• 33:09
Speaker 4: box and they would like to be on the course,
• 33:12
Speaker 4: they can put their boom box out there, encourage people.
• 33:15
  Speaker 2: Their boom box.
• 33:16
  Speaker 7: That's right. Yeah.
• 33:19
  Speaker 8: Wow.
• 33:20
  Speaker 6: World school, Dave.
• 33:21
  Speaker 8: I mean.
• 33:22
Speaker 2: I get called old school a lot, but they're boombox.
• 33:27
Speaker 2: Are we going to put down cardboard for breakdancing as well?
• 33:29
Speaker 4: You know, if they want to, that would be great.
• 33:32
Speaker 2: Yeah, that wouldn't be a bad idea. Why not? The
• 33:35

• 34:38
Speaker 2: I don't know about that. We had that earlier this week.
• 34:40
Speaker 2: But I know by like mid-90s, it's going to be
• 34:44
Speaker 2: like in the mid-90s by Wednesday. But we'll hopefully by
• 34:46
Speaker 2: next Saturday. It will be a little bit better.

• 34:52

• 34:55
Speaker 2: We need a little cool down. Absolutely. We had a
• 34:57
Speaker 2: text that says, wow, I remember the days back when
• 34:59
Speaker 2: Regatta was still 10 days that the Sunday Daily Mail
• 35:02
Speaker 2: newspaper had one separate section that was just Charleston distance
• 35:05
  Speaker 2: run results.
• 35:06
  Speaker 8: Yes.
• 35:07
Speaker 2: I remember that as well. Well, hopefully we keep getting

• 38:59
Speaker 2: to Kanawha County Commission President Ben Salango, and Beth Goodland
• 39:02
Speaker 2: will stop by. She is from the Kanawha Valley Academy
• 39:05
Speaker 2: of Learning. I want to welcome her to the show now.
• 39:08
Speaker 2: Kanawha County Commission candidate on the Republican ticket, Jared Page.
• 39:11
Speaker 2: Good morning, sir. Welcome to the show.
• 39:13
Speaker 6: Good morning, Dave. How are you doing?
• 39:14
Speaker 2: I'm doing fine. So about this commission meeting last night,
• 39:17
Speaker 2: let me set the stage. You ran for commission as
• 39:21
Speaker 2: a Republican, and you won your primary.
• 39:23
  Speaker 1: Correct.
• 39:23
Speaker 2: You'll move on to the general. Well, you do have
• 39:25
Speaker 2: Democratic opposition. All right. Well, let's put that aside for
• 39:27
Speaker 2: a moment. Republican Lance Wheeler. resigned to take over as
• 39:31
Speaker 2: director of the Ambulance Service Authority. So we're down a commissioner.
• 39:35
Speaker 2: Commission President Salango and Commissioner Tennant could not decide on
• 39:39
Speaker 2: a replacement. So the Republican Executive Committee sent three names
• 39:43
Speaker 2: to Tennant and Salango to choose from to fill out
• 39:46
Speaker 2: the rest of Wheeler's term. They used what's called the
• 39:48
Speaker 2: strike method. We talked about this on the show. Your name,
• 39:53
Speaker 2: Edward Burgess, and Austin Gessel were the three names.
• 39:55
  Speaker 11: Correct.
• 39:56
Speaker 2: Prior to the meetings, Salango and Tennant. So the way
• 40:00
Speaker 2: the whole strike thing worked, just so you know, there's
• 40:02
Speaker 2: three names on there. And Salango goes first to strike
• 40:06
Speaker 2: one because he's the commissioner with seniority.
• 40:09
  Speaker 11: Correct.
• 40:09
Speaker 2: And then Natalie goes and so on and so forth.
• 40:11
  Speaker 1: All right.
• 40:11
Speaker 2: So the names were Edward Burgess, yourself, and Austin Gessel.
• 40:15
Speaker 2: Prior to the meeting– Salango and Tenet get letters from
• 40:19
Speaker 2: Gessle and Burgess stating that if they are chosen, they
• 40:22
Speaker 2: will not accept the job. So we're at a standstill
• 40:27
Speaker 2: right now, I guess. So where are you in all this?
• 40:31
Speaker 6: Well, Dave, I think you did a great job explaining
• 40:34
Speaker 6: that there. That's been a lot of confusion about what
• 40:36
Speaker 6: actually transpires and how that goes. I appreciate you doing
• 40:40
Speaker 6: a good job explaining that. There were a lot of
• 40:43
Speaker 6: shocks last night at the Kanawha County Commission meeting. You know, candidly,
• 40:49
Speaker 6: what was not a shock was Commissioner Tennant once again
• 40:53
Speaker 6: playing partisan politics and refusing to follow the will of
• 40:58
Speaker 6: Republican voters and selecting me as the interim commissioner. This
• 41:04
Speaker 6: is the second time that she's had that ability. She
• 41:08
Speaker 6: had the ability to follow the will of voters. She
• 41:11
Speaker 6: is not either time, which that's her prerogative. But will
• 41:14
Speaker 6: of the voters, you mean, because you won the Republican
• 41:17
Speaker 6: primary and this was a Republican seat for the listeners.
• 41:20
Speaker 2: This had to be a Republican. It had to be
• 41:22
  Speaker 2: from that district.
• 41:22
  Speaker 3: Correct.
• 41:23
  Speaker 1: Yes.
• 41:24
Speaker 6: And for those out there, I know I have not
• 41:26
Speaker 6: won an election. I've been a couple of people's make comments.
• 41:29
Speaker 6: I'm not won the election. I'm not claiming to do
• 41:32
Speaker 6: that by any stretch of the imagination.
• 41:35
  Speaker 2: I am correct.
• 41:35
  Speaker 8: I am.
• 41:36
Speaker 6: But I am the Republican nominee. And I. stark contrast
• 41:40
Speaker 6: to what she said a few years ago when she
• 41:43
Speaker 6: actually was applying to an open commission vacancy while she
• 41:50
Speaker 6: was the Democratic nominee. Now, with that being said, after
• 41:54
Speaker 6: the meeting, I immediately called Mr. Gessel, who was the
• 41:59
Speaker 6: one chosen. And I personally encouraged him and personally asked
• 42:05
Speaker 6: him to fulfill the term, to change his mind. while
• 42:10
Speaker 6: I appreciate their support for me as the Republican nominee,
• 42:16
Speaker 6: I think it's right to put Kanawha County above politics.
• 42:21
Speaker 6: And I encouraged him, and I will say, I'll announce here,
• 42:26
Speaker 6: that Mr. Gessel has agreed to kind of change his
• 42:31
Speaker 6: mind and will be serving as an interim commissioner for
• 42:34
Speaker 6: the next four months today. I believe he will be
• 42:38
Speaker 6: swearing in sometime next week. I talked to him last
• 42:42
Speaker 6: night and again this morning that he will be putting
• 42:47
Speaker 6: out a statement of some sort over the next few
• 42:50
Speaker 6: days to address all of this. But he has assured
• 42:54
Speaker 6: me that he will be taking the oath of office
• 42:58
Speaker 6: and serving the rest of former Commissioner Wheeler's term.
• 43:02
Speaker 2: So, I mean, and I don't want you to speak
• 43:04
Speaker 2: for Mr. Gessel, and he's welcome on the show, as
• 43:08
Speaker 2: is we will have Commissioner Tennant. I talked to Commissioner
• 43:11
Speaker 2: Tennant last night, and we're trying to work out the
• 43:14
Speaker 2: schedule so she can be on the show as well,
• 43:16
Speaker 2: because I like to give everybody an opportunity to speak.
• 43:18
Speaker 2: But what was it, in your opinion, that changed? And again,
• 43:21
Speaker 2: I know you can't speak for Austin Gessel. I get that.
• 43:23
Speaker 2: But what was it that changed?
• 43:25
Speaker 6: You know, I think that Austin, as well as a
• 43:29
Speaker 6: multitude of Republicans, independents, and candidly Democrats, I've had a
• 43:34
Speaker 6: lot of Democrats when the first motion was made to
• 43:38
Speaker 6: appoint me felt that that was wrong, that I was
• 43:42
Speaker 6: selected by Republican voters and it only made sense. I
• 43:46
Speaker 6: think that Austin felt that I should have been appointed
• 43:52
Speaker 6: and that, you know, That may be why he did
• 43:57
Speaker 6: what he did. I don't know.
• 43:58
  Speaker 2: Not Austin.
• 44:00
Speaker 6: I'm not here to say. But what candidly I believe
• 44:05
Speaker 6: changed his mind is when I spoke to him and
• 44:06
Speaker 6: I said, you know, Austin, the Kanawha County deserves better
• 44:10
Speaker 6: than politics right now, partisan politics being played. And, you know,
• 44:16
Speaker 6: I support you as the commission, the interim commissioner. I
• 44:21
Speaker 6: look forward to working with you. And candidly, I think
• 44:24
Speaker 6: you will do a good job serving in that role.
• 44:27
Speaker 6: And he assured me that he gives me his full
• 44:32
Speaker 6: support for the general election. And I think that that
• 44:38
Speaker 6: really me asking him and encouraging him to do it
• 44:42
Speaker 6: is something that may have changed. Obviously, I can't speak
• 44:45
Speaker 6: for him. I know Austin well. He's a St. Almond's guy.
• 44:48
Speaker 6: All of us know one another somehow.
• 44:50
Speaker 2: And again, I do want to say that it had
• 44:52
Speaker 2: to be somebody from that from that district.
• 44:55
Speaker 6: Magisterial District three and four. That is that is one
• 44:58
Speaker 6: hundred and ten percent. It could not be just it.
• 45:01
Speaker 6: I was I'm glad you bring that up because people
• 45:04
Speaker 6: were saying, oh, it could be anywhere. That's not how
• 45:07
Speaker 6: that's county commissions across West Virginia. They are based off
• 45:09
Speaker 6: of magisterial districts is not just, you know. anybody from
• 45:14
  Speaker 6: any given county.
• 45:15
Speaker 2: Yeah, it's got to be from that magisterial district and
• 45:17
Speaker 2: it has to be of the same party.
• 45:18
Speaker 6: Correct. Yes. Correct. And I want to also commend... And he'll.
• 45:22
Speaker 2: Be the only Republican, if he does decide to take this,
• 45:26
Speaker 2: he will be the only Republican in the county commission,
• 45:28
Speaker 2: because Solango and Ms. Tennant are both Democrats. And if
• 45:32
Speaker 2: you are elected, and I want to, again, state for
• 45:34
Speaker 2: the record, you do have Democratic opposition. If you are elected,
• 45:38
Speaker 2: then you would be the only one. So you'd be
• 45:40
Speaker 2: one Republican against two Democrats. It will be that if Mr.
• 45:43
Speaker 2: Gastel decides to take the position.
• 45:44
  Speaker 8: Correct.
• 45:44
Speaker 6: That is correct. And I want to say publicly, I
• 45:46
Speaker 6: want to thank the Kanawha County Republican Executive Committee. This
• 45:50
Speaker 6: whole thing was kind of unprecedented, and I think the
• 45:55
Speaker 6: Kanawha County Republican Executive Committee did great work trying to
• 46:00
Speaker 6: get all this together. We never had to do this,
• 46:03
Speaker 6: and I say we. I'm not on the Kanawha County
• 46:05
Speaker 6: Republican Executive Committee camp because I'm still certified municipal judge
• 46:08
Speaker 6: due to ethics issues there, but So they really took
• 46:13
Speaker 6: the ball quickly. They did interviews. I believe all candidates
• 46:18
Speaker 6: were asked the same set of questions. It was done
• 46:20
Speaker 6: at a reasonable time. And I just want to commend
• 46:23
Speaker 6: them publicly for all the hard work they have done
• 46:26
Speaker 6: with this and the county commission. This isn't easy for
• 46:29
Speaker 6: the county commissioners. It's not easy for the staff trying
• 46:32
Speaker 6: to work through this. And so, yes, I want to
• 46:35
Speaker 6: give both the county commission and the Kanawha County Public
• 46:38
Speaker 6: Executive Committee a shout out.
• 46:40
Speaker 2: Well, and again, Kanawha County being the largest county, you know,
• 46:43
Speaker 2: in the state and we've had fine county commissioners. We
• 46:47
Speaker 2: have fine county commissioners now. I think that it's very
• 46:52
Speaker 2: important that we get the position filled.
• 46:54
  Speaker 5: I do.
• 46:54
Speaker 6: Absolutely. One hundred ten percent. And that's my philosophy is, yes,
• 46:58
Speaker 6: I applied for it initially and it was nominated. It
• 47:03
Speaker 6: was not seconded. and then I went through the application
• 47:07
Speaker 6: process as the other four people did with the Kanawha
• 47:09
Speaker 6: County Public Executive Committee. I didn't get it. That's the
• 47:13
Speaker 6: will of the commission, and it's time to put that
• 47:18
Speaker 6: aside and let's get somebody in there. Austin is someone
• 47:22
Speaker 6: who is a go-getter and I think will work very hard,
• 47:26
Speaker 6: and I think he will work well in the commission.
• 47:29
Speaker 6: And I want to say, too, even if I would
• 47:33
Speaker 6: have been appointed– I would have to win in November.
• 47:36
Speaker 6: And that's my focus been this entire time. Sure, I
• 47:39
Speaker 6: would have liked to have already got on the ground
• 47:42
Speaker 6: and started working for Kanawha County. But at the end
• 47:46
Speaker 6: of the day, my focus is on November and winning
• 47:48
Speaker 6: the election. And that's something that I've been. Last Saturday
• 47:52
Speaker 6: was a gauntlet. I was at Marmette for a ribbon cutting,
• 47:57
Speaker 6: ended up at Clendenin, Elkview, St. Aubin, Sissonville, Charleston. All
• 48:02
Speaker 6: in one day, it was a gauntlet. But I enjoy
• 48:04
Speaker 6: talking to people all across Kanawha County of all walks
• 48:08
Speaker 6: of life, all parties. And, you know, I look forward
• 48:11
Speaker 6: to working for all of them. And I think our
• 48:13
Speaker 6: campaign is growing. I think our campaign is growing strength.
• 48:17
Speaker 6: While there's a few people out attacking, that's OK. And,
• 48:22
Speaker 6: you know, that shows we're doing the right thing. And,
• 48:25
Speaker 6: you know, I promise I've said it from from last
• 48:28
Speaker 6: October when I announced this endeavor. that I'm always going
• 48:31
Speaker 6: to do the right thing for Kanawha County. I'm not
• 48:33
  Speaker 6: a dirty person. I'm a straight shooter. I'm not a
• 48:36
Speaker 6: dirty campaigner. And I just want to talk about my
• 48:39
Speaker 6: future or what my vision is for the future of
• 48:41
  Speaker 6: Kanawha County.
• 48:42
Speaker 2: Talking to Jared Page, energy demand is rising fast. A
• 48:45
Speaker 2: meeting that starts right here in West Virginia with more
• 48:47
Speaker 2: than 75 years of experience. TC Energy proudly operates a 2,300-mile

• 49:06
Speaker 2: I don't know if you want to comment on this
• 49:08
Speaker 2: or not, but there was a little bit of online chatter.
• 49:09
Speaker 2: I think it was last weekend, something to have to
• 49:11
Speaker 2: do with some signs or something like it. Do you
• 49:13
Speaker 2: want to get into that?
• 49:14
Speaker 6: I'll just– so I released a statement on social media.
• 49:20
Speaker 6: regarding that, that that was done by Commissioner Tennant's husband
• 49:25
Speaker 6: and the Elk River.
• 49:27
Speaker 2: Let me kind of set it up here. There was
• 49:29
Speaker 2: there were some questions about some signs. And we have
• 49:31
Speaker 2: this in every election, no matter where it is.
• 49:33
  Speaker 8: Yes.
• 49:34
Speaker 2: Some people have questions about the about. your signs being
• 49:37
Speaker 2: placed in front of someone else's?
• 49:40
Speaker 6: Yes, and all I can say is, I'll say number one,
• 49:43
Speaker 6: Kanawha County has much more important issues than to be
• 49:46
Speaker 6: dealing with a sign war, number one. And, you know,
• 49:50
Speaker 6: but I did release a statement because my campaign was
• 49:52
Speaker 6: being attacked by Commissioner Tennant's husband, stating that I placed
• 49:57
Speaker 6: a sign in front of my opponents. Number one, I
• 50:00
Speaker 6: didn't place that sign anywhere. And it was right in
• 50:03
Speaker 6: front of Delegate Dean Jeffries' insurance agency. He placed it
• 50:06
Speaker 6: for me. He obtained permission from the property owner. My
• 50:10
Speaker 6: opponent did not. And he placed it. And I trust
• 50:14
Speaker 6: Dean Jeffries to not intentionally block anybody's sign. I've known
• 50:19
Speaker 6: Dean Jeffries for a long time. He's a good Christian man.
• 50:23
Speaker 6: He would never do that intentionally. And my campaign will
• 50:28
Speaker 6: never do anything like that. It will never.
• 50:32
Speaker 6: Like I said, there's way more important things than sign wars.
• 50:35
Speaker 6: I don't care about sign placements. We all know signs
• 50:37
Speaker 6: don't win elections. But, you know, that's really all I'll
• 50:42
Speaker 6: say on it. It's been resolved. I've spoken to my
• 50:44
Speaker 6: opponent about it. He and I had a good conversation
• 50:49
Speaker 6: about it last night.
• 50:50
Speaker 2: All right. Jared Page, we've got to leave it there.
• 50:52
Speaker 2: I appreciate you joining us. And, again, we'll have anybody
• 50:55
Speaker 2: else that's involved in all this. I do want to
• 50:57
Speaker 2: have Commissioner Tennant on the show. I know Commissioner Salango
• 50:59
Speaker 2: is going to be on the show on Monday. So
• 51:01
Speaker 2: appreciate you being here, man. Thanks a lot. Appreciate it.
• 51:03
Speaker 6: Go Red Dragons against Commissioner Slango's alma mater, Shady Springs, tonight.
• 51:07
  Speaker 7: All right.
• 51:08
Speaker 6: Have a good day.
• 51:08
  Speaker 8: All right.
• 51:09
Speaker 2: Talk line coming up at the 10.06. I'll be back
• 51:12
Speaker 2: later today at noon with Metro News at midday. Until then,
• 51:15
Speaker 2: have fun and love somebody.
• 51:31
Speaker 1: By AEW CHSAM 96.5 FM Charleston and 104.5 Crosslanes, a
• 51:36
Speaker 1: WVRC media station. We're proud to live here too.
