- 0:12Speaker 1: This is the Wheel of Time Spoilers podcast.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Can we talk about this goddamn chapter because this is
- 0:21Speaker 2: what I'm hyper fixated on right now.
- 0:25Speaker 1: It's a good chapter. I was reading it being like,
- 0:28Speaker 1: this is this is some this is some peak payoff
- 0:31Speaker 1: right here. We have really been building up to this
- 0:33Speaker 1: for a long time.
- 0:35Speaker 2: A lot of little lines get paid off in this.
- 0:38Speaker 2: You know, Hark gets paid off and following mill are
- 0:42Speaker 2: following the Black Sisters. I mean, first of all, it's
- 0:47Speaker 2: just a nice, fun, old fashioned traditional trap getting into, right,
- 0:52Speaker 2: I mean that's these girls have not gotten into a
- 0:55Speaker 2: trap in a minute. And uh yeah, what what what's
- 0:59Speaker 2: the point if you don't walk headfirst into one?
- 1:01Speaker 1: It's true, traps are there to be walked into. But
- 1:04Speaker 1: I mean this is payoff that in many ways goes
- 1:07Speaker 1: back to book one.
- 1:10Speaker 2: San is, Oh, well sure, yeah, you want to pay
- 1:12Speaker 2: off from Millie Skane.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Yeah, Like this is her hitting a serious rough patch
- 1:18Speaker 1: in her arc, which has literally been going since book one.
- 1:22Speaker 1: So it's the culmination of many different book threads all
- 1:27Speaker 1: coming to a head at once. It's kind of like
- 1:28Speaker 1: the spiral pattern, right, Like each successive line is shorter,
- 1:31Speaker 1: but it all comes to a point.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Also with Bores, Right, this is sort of Bores's because
- 1:36Speaker 2: she was killed by this group of Dark Friends. So
- 1:39Speaker 2: this is sort of where his storyline leads into. Right,
- 1:41Speaker 2: that whole book prolog of book two, Right, that was
- 1:44Speaker 2: all from Bor's perspective, the dark friend's.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Social right, Like, well, I mean Millie Skane killed him
- 1:49Speaker 1: in the presence of Faialian, which is part of why
- 1:51Speaker 1: she has so much control over Failian is because Faalian
- 1:54Speaker 1: was tied to the table while Bors was drowned in brandy, like.
- 1:59Speaker 2: By a guy who now is very drunk. It seems
- 2:02Speaker 2: like once you start drowning people and brand you might,
- 2:04Speaker 2: you know, lay off the sauce a little bit.
- 2:07Speaker 1: I do feel like it would be hard to ever
- 2:08Speaker 1: consume brandy recreationally again after Like, but I guess I
- 2:13Speaker 1: don't have the mind of someone who's sworn to the Shadow, right,
- 2:17Speaker 1: Like they just have a different approach to violence.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Or it's just a drunk martyr er. Yeah, very very practical.
- 2:23Speaker 1: I do like to be practical. No, I don't.
- 2:27Speaker 2: I'm not practical Vouji. The Supergirls yearn for the traps,
- 2:31Speaker 2: It's true, they do.
- 2:31Speaker 1: They do, and it's really hard to give them traps
- 2:36Speaker 1: when they have bodyguards and stuff, so it's like the
- 2:40Speaker 1: good trapping in a while. Yeah, but yeah, Eleaene has
- 2:44Speaker 1: learned so much and she has learned nothing.
- 2:46Speaker 2: I'm gonna just go with nothing pretty much.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Well, I mean, she's she's advanced so far, she's gained
- 2:51Speaker 1: so much XP and yet she has learned nothing.
- 2:55Speaker 2: That's because she spent it all in charisma.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Okay, sad, Yeah, yeah she really did. She's just like
- 3:04Speaker 1: that dumping on her Charisma's fine.
- 3:07Speaker 2: She she is min max the shit out of her character.
- 3:11Speaker 2: She's like, oh, I can talk my way out of anything. Okay,
- 3:15Speaker 2: Gray Aja like.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I know, yes, seriously. All right, Well, I actually
- 3:22Speaker 1: picked a really long read for this because I kind
- 3:24Speaker 1: of tend to go with short reads. But this, this,
- 3:27Speaker 1: this one is a longer read.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Go for it.
- 3:29Speaker 1: My brain cooperates.
- 3:31Speaker 2: This is is so fun that some days you can
- 3:33Speaker 2: read just fine out loud, and some days it's just
- 3:36Speaker 2: a struggle.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Yeah, So we'll see which one today is. This is
- 3:43Speaker 1: chapter thirty one, the House on full Moon Street, and
- 3:47Speaker 1: our symbol is the black Aja two face inverted silhouettes.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Question about full Moon Street land for your reference.
- 3:56Speaker 1: It's just a street name. Yeah, is not particularly involved
- 4:01Speaker 1: with this group. That's all Mogedion and Morridon Land Fear
- 4:04Speaker 1: has never really intersected with them.
- 4:06Speaker 2: So full Moon, Half Moon.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Also, Lanfier is all about the crescence. She's really all
- 4:11Speaker 1: about the crescence.
- 4:12Speaker 2: So interesting take. I was reading the timeline that I've
- 4:16Speaker 2: referenced before. That's uh Stephen's timeline, right, and apparently a
- 4:23Speaker 2: lot of his timeline is actually based around the phases
- 4:25Speaker 2: of the moon. Robert Jordan does an incredibly accurate job
- 4:29Speaker 2: through almost all of the books except Winter's Heart and
- 4:33Speaker 2: Crossroads at Twilight, of actually lining up the phases of
- 4:38Speaker 2: the moon with the timeline in such a way that
- 4:41Speaker 2: you can tell from the phases of the moon how
- 4:43Speaker 2: much time has passed, and it lines up with all
- 4:46Speaker 2: of the other time cues that are built into his
- 4:50Speaker 2: story except again for those two books.
- 4:52Speaker 1: That's fantastic levels of nerdery on both parts. That Jordan
- 4:57Speaker 1: put it there for us to find a and that
- 5:00Speaker 1: someone found it, that is so fantastic. I love that
- 5:04Speaker 1: so much.
- 5:05Speaker 2: It just tells you how much like yes, he was
- 5:08Speaker 2: writing his books discovery as he went, but like every
- 5:12Speaker 2: time he was like this is going to take ten days, Okay,
- 5:14Speaker 2: what day is this going to start? What day is
- 5:15Speaker 2: it going to end? Like he was very careful about
- 5:18Speaker 2: how long it's going to take to travel places, how long,
- 5:21Speaker 2: like everything was meticulously planned out, because again, I think
- 5:25Speaker 2: this comes back to his core statement of myths fade
- 5:28Speaker 2: the legend over time and space, and if he doesn't
- 5:31Speaker 2: accurately account for that time and space, you can't accurately
- 5:35Speaker 2: show how those myths are fading over time and space.
- 5:38Speaker 2: And so yeah, I really do think that, and that's
- 5:40Speaker 2: where you know, I think Sanderson sort of said, well,
- 5:42Speaker 2: fuck it, We're going to say time and space is
- 5:44Speaker 2: getting distorted and not worry as much about continuity because
- 5:48Speaker 2: that's hard and it is hard. It's one of the
- 5:50Speaker 2: reasons I think Jordan is one of the masters of
- 5:52Speaker 2: writing is just how like we just found out this
- 5:56Speaker 2: fact that like who knows, like it's obviously known in
- 5:59Speaker 2: the in the series, but.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Like we're just finding it out.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, and it's like we're you know, newbies into
- 6:06Speaker 2: the community right now.
- 6:08Speaker 1: And that's cool because it means that it's even more
- 6:10Speaker 1: meaningful that Sanderson said that is breaking down because Jordan
- 6:15Speaker 1: had actually built a world in which that was very
- 6:17Speaker 1: carefully kept track of, even though we didn't know it.
- 6:19Speaker 1: The part where Sanderson broke it fits the cosmology that
- 6:23Speaker 1: Jordan had built. It's not just as Sandersonism. It's like,
- 6:26Speaker 1: well no, I mean, given how precise and organized it was,
- 6:30Speaker 1: like that's what the dark One would. Oh that's so cool.
- 6:35Speaker 1: I should probably do the reading. But that's really cool.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Thank you for pointing that.
- 6:39Speaker 2: It's a great it's a great title to point that
- 6:41Speaker 2: out on the full moon street right, like, yeah.
- 6:43Speaker 1: It's it's not actually a full moon really, but you know,
- 6:48Speaker 1: someone thought it was important once upon a time. I
- 6:50Speaker 1: wonder why it's named that, Like, no, we do not
- 6:54Speaker 1: need to get into street naming. We don't, we don't.
- 6:56Speaker 1: I'm gonna do this reading.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Can I just say I read something and I think,
- 7:00Speaker 2: tells me what the nine horse hitches? Yeah, I think
- 7:03Speaker 2: if you shorten, it's a horse to horse and hitch
- 7:07Speaker 2: to itch nine horse itch.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Oh god, I thought that.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Was a pretty good way. Just I don't know, I
- 7:17Speaker 2: don't know.
- 7:18Speaker 1: I don't like that. I disapprove.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, of course I got that from Reddit. Yeah
- 7:27Speaker 2: of course I got that from Reddit. Yeah, but just
- 7:29Speaker 2: trying to make it a brothel. You know, that's space.
- 7:31Speaker 1: It's definitely a brothel. But like we could just go
- 7:34Speaker 1: with the pony play of having women tied to like
- 7:37Speaker 1: horse stuff, and just like you don't need to bring
- 7:41Speaker 1: itching into it. That's just distaste.
- 7:48Speaker 2: I did, like, my, who are these people from the
- 7:51Speaker 2: sea who are chaining us up with the shawn and chain? Yeah,
- 7:56Speaker 2: and chain and the shawn chan yeah yeah.
- 7:58Speaker 1: The sea and chain.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:00Speaker 1: The thing is I think like that on a different level, it's.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Ridiculous on its face until you go read the origins
- 8:08Speaker 2: of Wheel of Time and realize that murdrawl is just
- 8:11Speaker 2: a mix up of murder and all and that Jordan
- 8:14Speaker 2: did that with a ton of other words, and you're like,
- 8:15Speaker 2: oh many others, so many others, and then you can
- 8:18Speaker 2: just start making your own, you know, mashups that it's
- 8:21Speaker 2: so much fun. It's so much fun.
- 8:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:23Speaker 1: No, he it's he was Shakespeareian in his level of
- 8:27Speaker 1: just like you see what I did there, Like it's
- 8:33Speaker 1: honestly obnoxious if you read origin, like, wow, the amount
- 8:37Speaker 1: of dad energy right now. Good god. He was a
- 8:41Speaker 1: dad to a fandom of millions and he knew it.
- 8:44Speaker 2: And just dad jokes everywhere in the names everywhere.
- 8:49Speaker 1: So it's so frustrating to all of us who are
- 8:52Speaker 1: in the child position of this dynamic.
- 8:55Speaker 2: And then those those of us who are the children
- 8:57Speaker 2: who just love the puns. The reason dad's tell the
- 9:00Speaker 2: dad jokes because it makes the children crack up with.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Laughter, And then some of us, would you do not
- 9:07Speaker 1: agree and shut up? Oh my god, immusing myself. Okay,
- 9:21Speaker 1: they must stay together, Elaine said firmly. The two of
- 9:25Speaker 1: you shouldn't be out by yourselves for that matter. Always
- 9:28Speaker 1: three or four together anywhere in Caitlin. That's the only
- 9:31Speaker 1: way to be safe. Just two of the mirrored stand
- 9:34Speaker 1: lamps were lit, six flames, filling the sitting room with
- 9:37Speaker 1: a dim light and the scent of lilies. So much
- 9:40Speaker 1: of the lamp oil had gone bad that it was
- 9:41Speaker 1: always perfumed now, but a crackling fire in the hearth
- 9:45Speaker 1: was beginning to take away some of the early hour's coolness.
- 9:49Speaker 1: There are times when a woman wants a little privacy
- 9:53Speaker 1: to make o replied, calmly, as if yet another kinswoman
- 9:56Speaker 1: had not just died from wanting privacy. Her voice was
- 10:00Speaker 1: calm at least, but plump hands smoothed her dark blue skirts.
- 10:05Speaker 1: If you won't put the fear of the light into them,
- 10:07Speaker 1: su Mako, I will, Alise said, her unusually mild face stern.
- 10:13Speaker 1: She looked the elder of the two, with touches of
- 10:15Speaker 1: gray in her hair compared to the glossy black hair
- 10:18Speaker 1: that fell below su Mako's stout shoulders. Yet she was
- 10:21Speaker 1: the younger by better than two hundred years. Alise had
- 10:24Speaker 1: been intrepid when Abu Dhar fell and they were forced
- 10:26Speaker 1: to flee the jan Chin, but her hands moved on
- 10:29Speaker 1: her brown skirts too. It was long past the bedtime
- 10:33Speaker 1: that a San Disney smell fain had decreed, But tired
- 10:36Speaker 1: as she was all the time. Once Elaine woke, she
- 10:38Speaker 1: could never get back to sleep, and warm goats milk
- 10:41Speaker 1: did not help. Warm goats milk tasted worse than cool.
- 10:45Speaker 1: She was going to make rand bloody Author drink warm
- 10:48Speaker 1: bloody goats milk till it came out of his ears
- 10:50Speaker 1: right after she found out what had hurt him badly
- 10:52Speaker 1: enough that she sensed a small jolt of pain, while
- 10:55Speaker 1: everything else in that small knot in the back of
- 10:57Speaker 1: her head that was him remained as vague as an
- 11:01Speaker 1: it had been all a stone again ever since, so
- 11:03Speaker 1: he was all right. Yet something had hurt him deeply
- 11:06Speaker 1: for her to sense anything at all, And why was
- 11:09Speaker 1: he traveling so often? One day he was far to
- 11:12Speaker 1: the southeast, the next to the northwest, and even more
- 11:15Speaker 1: distant the day after that somewhere else was he running
- 11:18Speaker 1: from whoever had hurt him? But she had her own
- 11:21Speaker 1: worries at the moment. Unable to sleep and restless, she
- 11:25Speaker 1: had dressed herself in the first thing that came to hand,
- 11:28Speaker 1: a dark gray riding dress, and gone for a walk
- 11:31Speaker 1: to enjoy the stillness of the palace in the small
- 11:33Speaker 1: hours of the morning, when even the servants were abed
- 11:36Speaker 1: and flickering stand lamps were the only things that moved
- 11:39Speaker 1: in the hallways aside from her, her and her bodyguards,
- 11:43Speaker 1: but she was learning to ignore their presence. She did
- 11:46Speaker 1: enjoy the solitude until the two women encountered her and
- 11:49Speaker 1: delivered the sad news that would have awaited sunrise otherwise
- 11:53Speaker 1: she had brought them back to her smaller sitting room
- 11:55Speaker 1: to discuss the matter behind a ward against listeners. My
- 11:59Speaker 1: brain were Do you hear that? My brain worked?
- 12:02Speaker 2: That was pretty good. You only had to like stop once,
- 12:04Speaker 2: that was amazing.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Yeah, like that's gonna be such a light edit on that.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's always happy when it's light edit.
- 12:11Speaker 1: So, yeah, this is this is the situation.
- 12:13Speaker 2: Right, So there's a bunch of kinswomen dying. They're being
- 12:18Speaker 2: killed left and right by as far as we can tell, Serene. Sorry,
- 12:25Speaker 2: Carrie Anne, Carrie Anne, We're gonna go with the hard
- 12:27Speaker 2: c on her. Yeah, you know, you know, I think
- 12:29Speaker 2: what throws me off about her is because it's a ce.
- 12:32Speaker 2: It almost feels like the sea should be a soft sea.
- 12:35Speaker 2: So she almost sounds like she should be another.
- 12:37Speaker 1: S name, right, right, And she's paired with Siritha, who's
- 12:41Speaker 1: literally an S name.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, so it should be so I almost want
- 12:45Speaker 2: to say Serene and Serritha, which I don't know if
- 12:48Speaker 2: what do they do? They use Serene in the audio books?
- 12:51Speaker 2: Are you sure it's Korean Karen?
- 12:53Speaker 1: Okay, I'm pretty sure it's Karene. Now I want to
- 12:56Speaker 1: go back and listen to it, but I'm pretty sure
- 12:57Speaker 1: it's Karene. Maybe I'll just like splice a little slice
- 13:00Speaker 1: of the audio.
- 13:01Speaker 2: But I've got a wonder it's a case sound I
- 13:03Speaker 2: gotta wonder if they didn't mess up once or twice
- 13:05Speaker 2: and used Yes, I'm.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Just saying it could have happened possibly, But yeah, she
- 13:10Speaker 1: presumably has killed all of them, which I believe. It's
- 13:13Speaker 1: ten sisters in ten days is the suspected body count.
- 13:16Speaker 1: She says, seven sisters in Yeah.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Three women murdered with the one power in the last
- 13:21Speaker 2: ten days, and very likely seven more before that.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Okay, so it's ten people over more than ten days.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Yes, three in the last ten days, and then seven
- 13:31Speaker 2: you know.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Going back to when Adalius was murdered. Right, Yes, I
- 13:36Speaker 1: think this is the first of that ten.
- 13:38Speaker 2: That would be my assumption.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Yeah, of that seven, which adds to.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Ten, assuming that's not just the kids woman, right, Adalius
- 13:45Speaker 2: may not be counted in that.
- 13:47Speaker 1: No, I think she's counted because it's ten like of
- 13:49Speaker 1: the group, right, Like you're not really saying like, oh well,
- 13:52Speaker 1: it counts differently if it's no, like, it's ten women
- 13:55Speaker 1: of the group who have been murdered. And also I
- 13:58Speaker 1: wanted to point out it's been ten days since Hark
- 14:03Speaker 1: got sent to watch Melar. It's specifically a ten day
- 14:08Speaker 1: interval that we're emphasizing here. Twice it's been ten days
- 14:11Speaker 1: for the last three murders to occur, and it's also
- 14:13Speaker 1: been ten days that Hark has been following Melar.
- 14:16Speaker 2: Which is ten days since we last saw Eline.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Oh, is that the last time we saw a Lane?
- 14:21Speaker 2: Pretty sure? Yeah, let me double check that. But the
- 14:25Speaker 2: last time we saw her was chapter seventeen. She meets
- 14:28Speaker 2: with Dilon in the map room, reporting that six high
- 14:31Speaker 2: lords are still neutral. Okay, where did she meet with Hark?
- 14:35Speaker 1: Let's see, it's chapter sixteen. I just happened to flip
- 14:37Speaker 1: to it, and I have a note on it. It's
- 14:39Speaker 1: the new follower of Doulen Melar, is my note.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Yeah, so that hole is you know, like fourteen fifteen,
- 14:45Speaker 2: sixteen seventeen. I think that era was, you know, the
- 14:48Speaker 2: last Elane chunk we saw, So that was ten days ago.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Okay, all right, yeah, so just to we can all
- 14:54Speaker 1: orient ourselves, that was like four hundred pages ago in
- 14:58Speaker 1: the right back.
- 15:00Speaker 2: But I mean, you know, hell, in these books, the
- 15:02Speaker 2: fact that we actually get to see a character twice.
- 15:04Speaker 2: Remember in the last couple of books, we'd see a
- 15:06Speaker 2: character for four or five chapters and that was it.
- 15:09Speaker 2: That's all we get for that chap of that character
- 15:10Speaker 2: for that book. So it's nice that we're bouncing around
- 15:13Speaker 2: a little bit and actually coming back to these characters.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Yeah for the fine finale, right, but yeah, we're with
- 15:18Speaker 2: her for a couple of more chapters for his whole
- 15:21Speaker 2: kidnapping and breaking out thing, which then ends with her
- 15:24Speaker 2: actually having enough support to take the throne.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. In many ways this is
- 15:29Speaker 1: a good move for her, but only because she has
- 15:32Speaker 1: Taveran levels of things breaking her way.
- 15:35Speaker 2: Taverean biproxy.
- 15:36Speaker 1: Man, it's got to be she's pregnant with the Tavern's babies.
- 15:39Speaker 1: There's a halo effect.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Right exactly. So we also get a little bit about
- 15:43Speaker 2: random here, right, she gets a small jolt of pain.
- 15:48Speaker 2: That's him losing his hand.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Yeah, that's like when seismographs in Oregon pick up on
- 15:54Speaker 1: a volcanic eruption in Tunga, right, right, right, that's the
- 15:58Speaker 1: kind of like small jolt that we're talking about.
- 16:00Speaker 2: It.
- 16:00Speaker 1: I was like, whoa, at this distance, we shouldn't be
- 16:02Speaker 1: getting any jolts. That was definitely the hand getting blasted off,
- 16:07Speaker 1: and also his eyes getting damaged.
- 16:09Speaker 2: And then he's traveling one day, he's so far to
- 16:12Speaker 2: the southeast. That seems to be tier because he's in
- 16:15Speaker 2: tiar a lot, and then to the northwest even more distant.
- 16:18Speaker 2: I think Aridomon sure is what my research told me.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Yeah, that makes sense because he is gonna be going
- 16:24Speaker 1: out there shortly.
- 16:26Speaker 2: She can't love it. She can't sleep, and she can't
- 16:28Speaker 2: get up to get some warm goat's milk. That never
- 16:31Speaker 2: helps her in. There's no Nori being like, oh I
- 16:34Speaker 2: love warm goat's milk. Yam yam, yam.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Right, He's like, I happen to like it. It's very
- 16:39Speaker 1: helpful for going to sleep totally. And I'm like, look, sir,
- 16:44Speaker 1: I get that you're like a weird old man who
- 16:47Speaker 1: probably does need milk and prunes on a nightly basis,
- 16:49Speaker 1: But like, I think you might be lying. But it's
- 16:53Speaker 1: an adorable lie. I really like it. It's a saving face,
- 16:57Speaker 1: adorable lie that makes him seem like a weird old
- 16:59Speaker 1: man and it's like cute.
- 17:02Speaker 2: You think he's lying about liking warm goat'smell.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I think he's just saying that.
- 17:06Speaker 2: To like, oh, I know, I think he's used a
- 17:07Speaker 2: weird old man who actually likes it. Like, I think
- 17:10Speaker 2: this looks like warm milk putting you to sleep is
- 17:12Speaker 2: totally a thing.
- 17:13Speaker 1: I have read that many times, I have tried it.
- 17:17Speaker 1: I disagree.
- 17:18Speaker 2: My mom used to make it for me when I
- 17:19Speaker 2: was a kid, but it was always with a bunch
- 17:21Speaker 2: of sugar in it and like vanilla flavoring. It was
- 17:23Speaker 2: basically a milkhake.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Yeah see, I did it with vanilla. I never put
- 17:26Speaker 1: sugar in it, but I did put vanilla in it,
- 17:28Speaker 1: and I did enjoy that, but it didn't help me
- 17:30Speaker 1: go to sleep. It was just a thing I enjoyed.
- 17:32Speaker 2: Well well, sure, yeah, well, I mean, fuck, it probably
- 17:35Speaker 2: is Paceibo effect right here. This helps you go to sleep.
- 17:38Speaker 2: Kids give it to you and it's like okay, I
- 17:40Speaker 2: guess I have something and it's like warm and you're
- 17:43Speaker 2: kind of full, and it just it just helps you
- 17:45Speaker 2: if you're hungry, it kind of ties you through the night. Whatever.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Sure, yeah, which is a mood. But also again, I
- 17:52Speaker 1: hate heat, So I'm like, there's a good chunk at
- 17:54Speaker 1: the year when I am not wanting to put warm things. Dog,
- 17:58Speaker 1: I didn't want to consume things in them, like, no,
- 18:01Speaker 1: give me cold milk, any cold things. So I could
- 18:06Speaker 1: believe either way that Nori is either into warm goats
- 18:10Speaker 1: milk or not. I kind of always assumed it was
- 18:12Speaker 1: like a cute, little saving face lie. But he might
- 18:15Speaker 1: also be of an age where he really needs his
- 18:17Speaker 1: warm milk and prunes.
- 18:18Speaker 2: So right, that's all I'm saying.
- 18:20Speaker 1: That's super reasonable.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's just so frustrating because she's like,
- 18:25Speaker 2: oh my god, I can't hate I hate this and
- 18:27Speaker 2: it doesn't work for me, But of course it would
- 18:29Speaker 2: work for this old man, right, like, and that's why
- 18:31Speaker 2: everyone keeps recommending it. But it's just it doesn't make sense.
- 18:34Speaker 1: I mean, conventional wisdom among the palace staff is that
- 18:37Speaker 1: it works, because it does for a lot of them.
- 18:41Speaker 2: Sure, that's what I'm saying.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Yeah, that's that's I'd never thought about it that deeply,
- 18:45Speaker 1: But that's super reasonable.
- 18:48Speaker 2: It's just she hates it, right, And she's also not
- 18:50Speaker 2: an old lady who needs like, you know, warm milk
- 18:53Speaker 2: to go to bed. Yeah, well she has she has, Yeah,
- 18:55Speaker 2: she has a good midwife though.
- 18:57Speaker 1: Now right, the midwife is mentioned in here. But before
- 19:14Speaker 1: we get to Nori, we have Duhara to deal with.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Yes, Dohara, who never made a secret of her odd jaw,
- 19:22Speaker 2: As it says in the text.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Her so black you can't see the red slashes until
- 19:28Speaker 1: the light catches it a certain way.
- 19:31Speaker 2: Yeah, she's black as black can be. This is a
- 19:33Speaker 2: black dark friend alert on full blast.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Yeah, she walks in, Like, first of all, she just
- 19:41Speaker 1: walks in, screaming her allegiance because she respects no boundaries
- 19:44Speaker 1: at all. Right, she shows up in the middle of
- 19:46Speaker 1: the night and expects Elaine to be woken to greet her,
- 19:49Speaker 1: and then doesn't even allow for the guard to finish
- 19:52Speaker 1: negotiating that Eline's already awake before barging in. It's like
- 19:56Speaker 1: she's as bad as the sea folks. She's worse than
- 19:57Speaker 1: the sea folk. The seafolk only barged in during a bath,
- 20:00Speaker 1: not in the middle of the night. Right, So it's
- 20:03Speaker 1: like the boundary invasion is a lot, even for someone
- 20:06Speaker 1: coming from Elida. But yeah, her her clothes, it's like,
- 20:09Speaker 1: oh yeah, in certain lights you can tell that there's
- 20:12Speaker 1: red in all that darkness. It's like ooh ooh.
- 20:16Speaker 2: And she's actually been pretty heavily involved in events, right,
- 20:20Speaker 2: I mean she is very old, right, she's two hundred
- 20:23Speaker 2: and thirty six. She was a sitter in the Hall
- 20:27Speaker 2: for the Red. She was a keeper of the chronicles
- 20:30Speaker 2: under an armor Lench. So she's been keeper Oh.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Wow, oh wow, I didn't know that.
- 20:36Speaker 2: Uh, but you know, there's just like a whole bunch
- 20:39Speaker 2: of stuff. She killed a small group of Reds.
- 20:41Speaker 1: What when?
- 20:42Speaker 2: Wait? No, sorry, wait, hold on, Siren was killed by
- 20:45Speaker 2: a small group of Reds and it may have involved
- 20:47Speaker 2: Duran in the vileness, So she may have been involved
- 20:49Speaker 2: in the vileness.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Right, she was keeper for Sierra and Value.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Yeah, she was keeper for Ciren. What.
- 20:56Speaker 1: Yeah, she definitely was involved in Sierra and Value's death. Wow,
- 21:02Speaker 1: I did not know that about whoa whoa wow.
- 21:09Speaker 2: And there is in the wheel of time companion can
- 21:13Speaker 2: read that she stood disposed Tousanche, but she wasn't a
- 21:15Speaker 2: sitter at the time. So the Red Sitters were a
- 21:17Speaker 2: light up Pavara and Teslin, so there was some confusion
- 21:20Speaker 2: about she was initially listed to someone who stood to
- 21:24Speaker 2: depose too, but she.
- 21:26Speaker 1: Couldn't because she was not a sitter. Okay, okay, But
- 21:31Speaker 1: she's been all up in the halls of power doing
- 21:34Speaker 1: dark friendy stuff for as long as plot relevant events
- 21:38Speaker 1: have been happening, and then some she.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Knows that Duhara was uncomfortable talking about fork route, so
- 21:44Speaker 2: maybe she knew about it, possibly through the dark frienderie stuff.
- 21:47Speaker 2: And she is part of Heslam's attack on Avienda and
- 21:51Speaker 2: she gets barbecued.
- 21:53Speaker 1: Oh Avienda kills her in that in that encounter that
- 21:56Speaker 1: ultimately ends with her having a handmaiden to deal with
- 21:59Speaker 1: her broken feet. Wow. Cool. Yeah, so yeah, Duhara walks
- 22:04Speaker 1: in black Auja as fuck very much in the apogy
- 22:08Speaker 1: of her power.
- 22:09Speaker 2: She is, and we find out officially because she's on
- 22:12Speaker 2: Varren's list, right.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Yeah, but like I mean, she she's making no secret
- 22:17Speaker 1: of it. She's really not. She thinks that she can
- 22:19Speaker 1: do whatever she wants and get away with it because
- 22:22Speaker 1: she has been for centuries and she just has forgotten
- 22:26Speaker 1: what caution looks like. And she comes into tell Elane, hey,
- 22:31Speaker 1: you're being claimed by Alida. Basically, she's basically trying to
- 22:36Speaker 1: assert Elida's white Tower control over Elaine and the Channelers
- 22:40Speaker 1: in her sphere of influence.
- 22:42Speaker 2: And tries to be like Rondo mccure, was, you know,
- 22:45Speaker 2: beaten for poison, you know, drugging you? And Elaine's like, no,
- 22:49Speaker 2: she's beaten for failing to capture me.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Yeah, for drugging me unsuccessful.
- 22:54Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, for not bringing me in.
- 22:55Speaker 1: For drugging me, and then not following through one all
- 22:58Speaker 1: the other things that we're supposed to come.
- 22:59Speaker 2: After, because she read those orders in the World of Dreams,
- 23:03Speaker 2: in the Box of Messages, right, so she remembers exactly
- 23:07Speaker 2: what a light is phrasing was and which is to
- 23:09Speaker 2: punish her for not and.
- 23:10Speaker 1: She keeps that information to herself. But we and her
- 23:13Speaker 1: get to think about it because she gets to be
- 23:15Speaker 1: a little omnipresent, like with the reader for a moment,
- 23:18Speaker 1: which is fun.
- 23:19Speaker 2: And then what follows is like Duhara trying to undercut
- 23:23Speaker 2: Elaine's authority as an isid I to the can, hoping
- 23:28Speaker 2: that the can will, you know, basically be like, oh,
- 23:30Speaker 2: you're not actually I sid I. We didn't know that
- 23:32Speaker 2: we're gonna, you know, rebel against you. But of course
- 23:35Speaker 2: it's dumb because they understand the Tower split and they
- 23:38Speaker 2: understand that there's like a different that the Rebel Tower
- 23:41Speaker 2: raised her as Amberlin or as.
- 23:43Speaker 1: I said, I Yeah, well, Duhara has a very low
- 23:47Speaker 1: view of the intelligence of Wilders, so.
- 23:49Speaker 2: Yeah, well, evil people are prejudiced news at nine, Yeah.
- 23:54Speaker 1: For sure, for sure. She also tries to undercut Elaine's
- 23:57Speaker 1: confidence in her ability to win the throne by suggesting that, well,
- 24:01Speaker 1: it's the lack of isidie support that has all these
- 24:04Speaker 1: houses not flocking to you, and like, you know, maybe
- 24:08Speaker 1: we're causing that. Maybe we can turn it around, Like
- 24:11Speaker 1: she's I think, digging at Elaine's confidence there, in addition.
- 24:14Speaker 2: To oh, yeah, but full of bullshit, right, maybe it's us, No,
- 24:19Speaker 2: it's not. We know, like we can read those lies.
- 24:22Speaker 1: So yeah, like the divided Tower deciding to weigh in
- 24:26Speaker 1: on a civil matter is not going to help resolve anything.
- 24:29Speaker 1: And that's not why the houses are sitting aside. They're
- 24:32Speaker 1: not waiting for the White Towers permission. That's not how
- 24:35Speaker 1: Andoran politics work. Yes, no, it's not how anyone's politics works.
- 24:40Speaker 2: And Elaine's already made the point that she has a
- 24:42Speaker 2: bunch of channelers nice to eye in there building with her,
- 24:44Speaker 2: and the rebels have none, so like, really, who are the.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Supporting Yeah exactly, it's it's just all very silly. Duhara
- 24:52Speaker 1: walks in there with books, old news and books old
- 24:54Speaker 1: attitude and thinks she can just personality bluff her way
- 24:57Speaker 1: through it. And it's just like have you seen the
- 24:59Speaker 1: amount of pages since you were last involved in the plot, Like, no,
- 25:03Speaker 1: this will not work on us.
- 25:06Speaker 2: Books. All that was like what books? Like what books
- 25:08Speaker 2: are you? I'm like, oh, my books right.
- 25:12Speaker 1: Thinking, And then she also talks about how Elene is
- 25:16Speaker 1: going to have to come back to the Tower to
- 25:19Speaker 1: accept her punishment for being an imposter to the Shawl
- 25:23Speaker 1: and how she's going to get beaten, and it's just like, again,
- 25:26Speaker 1: we've been watching a GWayne not respond positively to Elida's beatings,
- 25:31Speaker 1: and now you want to try to deploy this on
- 25:33Speaker 1: Elaine in her palace. You want to tell her that
- 25:36Speaker 1: she's going to.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Come on, no, come voluntarily come to beatings when this
- 25:40Speaker 2: other group is totally like made you whole.
- 25:43Speaker 1: Yeah, Like no, you're delusional, Duhara, You're you are cartoon
- 25:50Speaker 1: two dimensional mustache twirling pathetic right now, like come on.
- 25:54Speaker 2: It feels like I got the call from my old
- 25:56Speaker 2: boss who wanted me to come back and work for
- 25:58Speaker 2: the job that I'd asked him for, but I had
- 26:01Speaker 2: since moved on to a much better paying job that
- 26:04Speaker 2: treated me much better than he ever did, And I
- 26:07Speaker 2: was like, okay, well, all you have to do is
- 26:10Speaker 2: more than match my pay, which I know you can't do,
- 26:13Speaker 2: and ensure that I'll be treated well, which I know
- 26:15Speaker 2: you can't do, and I'll come right along. I feel
- 26:18Speaker 2: like that's like, yeah, she's the same thing where it's like,
- 26:21Speaker 2: why would I come back to the tower or the
- 26:22Speaker 2: rebels treat me so much better? And by the way,
- 26:25Speaker 2: you're gonna lose. Elaine's yeah, Elia's awful, and it's just
- 26:29Speaker 2: amount of time until you know she gets captured by
- 26:31Speaker 2: Sean Chan and taken back.
- 26:33Speaker 1: Exactly exactly like no, and then Tuha's like, show me
- 26:37Speaker 1: to my rooms, and Elaine's like, how about you go
- 26:41Speaker 1: try to find an airbnb.
- 26:42Speaker 2: One hop on by the middle of the night, in
- 26:48Speaker 2: the middle of the fucking night.
- 26:49Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, go find him manger. Okay.
- 26:52Speaker 2: So and then Master Nori shows up because he saw
- 26:54Speaker 2: her getting worms goat smell because he was down in
- 26:56Speaker 2: the kitchen getting his own and was like, oh, she
- 26:58Speaker 2: must be awake, but she's getting wrong and she's pregnant
- 27:00Speaker 2: and can't drink wine. So lere's be other people there,
- 27:02Speaker 2: so she's taking guests so I can come on up. Yeah,
- 27:05Speaker 2: And it's like, okay, Spymaster, I.
- 27:07Speaker 1: See uh huh. He's he's adapting to his role very quickly.
- 27:12Speaker 2: Well. But the news he brings is that Hark followed
- 27:18Speaker 2: Melar without getting murdered, which is news in and of itself,
- 27:22Speaker 2: to the house on Fulmon Street, which is the dark
- 27:25Speaker 2: Friends tied out and everything. And he reports this quote
- 27:30Speaker 2: a pity there are only two of us, failing the
- 27:32Speaker 2: way Lady Shane works us. I think Hark was caught.
- 27:36Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 27:37Speaker 2: I think Hark was compelled in the same way that
- 27:39Speaker 2: Julian was caught and compelled to tell them. I think
- 27:43Speaker 2: Hark was caught and they knew because like there's clearly
- 27:47Speaker 2: not two of them, more of them show up in
- 27:48Speaker 2: this chapter. They know it was a trap. It was
- 27:52Speaker 2: set ahead of time. The only way they could have
- 27:54Speaker 2: said this is either a knowing they're being observed. But
- 27:56Speaker 2: I just don't think they're that good. I think that
- 27:59Speaker 2: Hark was called and compelled to say the information that
- 28:03Speaker 2: he gave to them.
- 28:04Speaker 1: Yeah, So I I never really questioned this. I was
- 28:08Speaker 1: just like, oh, yeah, he heard what he heard. Do
- 28:10Speaker 1: do do do do? Because I am a global little puppy.
- 28:13Speaker 1: But Ali and Gus are ahead of us now, so
- 28:17Speaker 1: we can steal a go exactly, and Ali didn't buy
- 28:20Speaker 1: this for one second. She was like, no, that was
- 28:22Speaker 1: a trap. And she went with the argument that they
- 28:24Speaker 1: had somehow known they were being observed and they like
- 28:26Speaker 1: did more normal human non magic subterfuge. But same deal,
- 28:31Speaker 1: this is a trap and like they know, they very
- 28:35Speaker 1: much know, they are very much waiting for her, Like
- 28:38Speaker 1: Elaine is super walking into a trap. This is not
- 28:41Speaker 1: a happy accident. And I was like, I guess that
- 28:45Speaker 1: makes sense. And now you're being like literally remember in
- 28:48Speaker 1: book four or whatever, when this exact move got deployed.
- 28:53Speaker 2: Like by these exact people.
- 28:55Speaker 1: Mmmm, that is very compelling.
- 29:01Speaker 2: Nice, but yeah, because they did it to Julian, right,
- 29:04Speaker 2: he showed up and he was the he betrayed the
- 29:06Speaker 2: girls to the Black Aja.
- 29:08Speaker 1: So if they had, if Elaine had thought for five minutes,
- 29:13Speaker 1: maybe she could have like delved his mind, see if
- 29:17Speaker 1: there's any little magical snags lingering around the back there.
- 29:21Speaker 1: Maybe maybe possibly because it's it's so weird to step
- 29:27Speaker 1: out on the stoop in the middle of the night
- 29:29Speaker 1: and say, gee, Willakers, here's the house population, name of
- 29:33Speaker 1: person standing next to me I've been hanging out with
- 29:36Speaker 1: for days, Like who says that, like, when do you
- 29:38Speaker 1: ever like go out on the porch and say, whoo, sir, glad,
- 29:42Speaker 1: there's only thirty eight people at this party, Like who
- 29:45Speaker 1: does that? Who does that?
- 29:47Speaker 2: And even even when the I said eye, try and
- 29:50Speaker 2: be like, this is not a good idea. Even when
- 29:52Speaker 2: the dark friend says this is not a good idea,
- 29:55Speaker 2: she uses that quote to justify going in.
- 29:57Speaker 4: Mm hmm.
- 29:58Speaker 1: Yeah, everyone thinks this is a bad idea. The dark
- 30:01Speaker 1: friend thinks it's a bad idea. Burgita thinks it's a
- 30:03Speaker 1: bad idea. Nobody thinks this is a good idea. Except well, yeah,
- 30:09Speaker 1: exactly Elaine. As Chad says, Elaine thinking is a bit
- 30:13Speaker 1: of an oxymoron. But yes, Elaine thinks, quote unquote that
- 30:16Speaker 1: this is a good idea. I love you, Elaine, I
- 30:19Speaker 1: love you, Elaine. You're great.
- 30:21Speaker 2: Elaine lines up a bunch of cannon fodder to take
- 30:23Speaker 2: into the I mean sorry companions to take into the
- 30:27Speaker 2: She's like, I'm safe, my babies will be born. Fine,
- 30:30Speaker 2: you you, and you come with me to the most
- 30:32Speaker 2: dangerous place we've ever been.
- 30:35Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 30:38Speaker 2: Because they're all dead, they all.
- 30:39Speaker 1: Die very and all of them have borders. Some of
- 30:44Speaker 1: them more than one, so you're bringing in more than
- 30:48Speaker 1: two times that many lives with you. Yep, when you
- 30:51Speaker 1: do yes and yeah, I mean Elaine does think about
- 30:54Speaker 1: some things, but she never thinks about danger. Her bravery
- 30:57Speaker 1: is to a catastrophic degree in this case. I'm gonna
- 31:03Speaker 1: be fine, It'll all work out. There's no and she
- 31:05Speaker 1: literally tells what we'll get them when we get there.
- 31:07Speaker 1: But like she literally tells Brigita, if I get in trouble,
- 31:10Speaker 1: I'll shout. Two pages later, she's in trouble thinking, well,
- 31:12Speaker 1: I would shout, except that it won't do any good.
- 31:15Speaker 1: I'm like, that wasn't the agreement, right, right? Agreement good?
- 31:18Speaker 1: In trouble you shouts, there's no unless I think that
- 31:22Speaker 1: there's no point, like stop throwing yourself on every sword
- 31:25Speaker 1: grenade you find.
- 31:26Speaker 2: They do arrest Melar, She sends people loft to Melar.
- 31:29Speaker 2: He does get successfully arrested and apparently beat the crap.
- 31:32Speaker 2: They beat the crap out of him.
- 31:34Speaker 1: She says, don't be too gentle because the charges are
- 31:37Speaker 1: being a dark friend. And I'm like, you're supposed to
- 31:42Speaker 1: arrest people with the same care as you don't execute them.
- 31:46Speaker 1: You're supposed to wait for the trial.
- 31:50Speaker 2: Yeah, but there's some person and personal issues going on
- 31:55Speaker 2: between these women and Melar.
- 31:57Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's like he is a terrible person, and
- 32:00Speaker 1: it's women getting to like beat up a terrible man
- 32:02Speaker 1: who's a horrible misogynist and does all kinds of rapes
- 32:04Speaker 1: and murderers. And it's like, I don't really care.
- 32:06Speaker 2: That it also pinches them and talks about them. Yeah.
- 32:09Speaker 1: I feel like I'm supposed to be like, no, it's
- 32:11Speaker 1: not fair, you know. I feel like the ACLU defending
- 32:14Speaker 1: Nazis or something like this is this is not what
- 32:17Speaker 1: I want to do.
- 32:18Speaker 2: Yeah, but they're not. Yeah, they're not beating him up
- 32:21Speaker 2: because of you know, what category he belongs to or
- 32:24Speaker 2: what group he belongs to. They're beating him up because
- 32:26Speaker 2: he's a fucking jackass.
- 32:28Speaker 1: Which I mean, yeah, it is very self evident. He
- 32:30Speaker 1: does not hide tassaga so to speak.
- 32:32Speaker 2: No, So, yeah, we get the Brigide, we get Brigida,
- 32:35Speaker 2: a bunch of guards women, four or I should say
- 32:39Speaker 2: three other eyes an eye.
- 32:40Speaker 1: Yeah. Oh and and Elaine ropes hark into a new career.
- 32:45Speaker 2: Right.
- 32:45Speaker 1: Also, he's like, so I get to leave now, right,
- 32:47Speaker 1: She's like uh or you work for Master Norri forever now.
- 32:51Speaker 1: And Master Nory is like, I definitely didn't see this coming,
- 32:55Speaker 1: and I'm not at all prepared to say yes without
- 32:57Speaker 1: batting an eye. No, he's Hark. Nori saw this coming
- 33:02Speaker 1: a mile away and was totally like, oh, yes, I
- 33:05Speaker 1: can definitely do with a disposable spy.
- 33:07Speaker 2: This feels like kind of how they got a hold
- 33:09Speaker 2: of van In.
- 33:10Speaker 1: Very much so. It's like less brute force. It's a
- 33:14Speaker 1: little bit more like hyper personalized, but yes, and it
- 33:19Speaker 1: keeps him from criming again, which apparently would be a
- 33:22Speaker 1: capital offense.
- 33:23Speaker 2: And the only other thing I have on Hark is
- 33:27Speaker 2: he reports to Nory that Duhara has been secretly calling
- 33:30Speaker 2: on Ilorian in Towers of Midnight.
- 33:32Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, because she's very committed to the thing
- 33:37Speaker 1: where she's supposed to undermine a Lane's rise to power.
- 33:41Speaker 1: She's very committed to that mission.
- 33:43Speaker 2: Okay, here's something I was thinking about. She took a
- 33:47Speaker 2: seat one of the low black chairs around the scrollage
- 33:48Speaker 2: table and release Cidar again. Since her experiment at holding
- 33:52Speaker 2: the power all day, she had not held it longer
- 33:55Speaker 2: than necessary. How many pregnant women do you think hold
- 33:58Speaker 2: the power all day. First of all, how many women
- 34:00Speaker 2: who can channel are get pregnant, not that many. Second
- 34:03Speaker 2: of all, how many of those experiment with holding the
- 34:05Speaker 2: power all day?
- 34:06Speaker 1: Not that many?
- 34:07Speaker 2: And I'm wondering if this has anything to do with
- 34:09Speaker 2: the fact that her children can hold the power from birth.
- 34:13Speaker 2: If we believe Avienda's vision of the future, that Rand's
- 34:17Speaker 2: children will be special in some way and that they'll
- 34:19Speaker 2: be able to hold pat the power from birth all
- 34:21Speaker 2: the time. And I have to wonder if maybe her
- 34:24Speaker 2: experimenting with the one power here and holding it somehow
- 34:28Speaker 2: influence the children.
- 34:29Speaker 1: One does wonder? I definitely was also connecting those thoughts,
- 34:33Speaker 1: being like, I wonder if this increases the odds of
- 34:37Speaker 1: that thing that Avianda's children experience. Does Avianda perform a
- 34:41Speaker 1: similar experiment while she's pregnant. We'll never know because it's
- 34:44Speaker 1: all off page, But yeah, I also was wondering if
- 34:48Speaker 1: those things are connected, and I.
- 34:50Speaker 2: Do, okay, And I understand that, yes, the vision was
- 34:52Speaker 2: about Avienda's children, but she talks about all four children, right,
- 34:56Speaker 2: so it's like more, aren't they? Zavianda have four? I
- 35:00Speaker 2: always get this mixed up.
- 35:01Speaker 1: Yes, she has the quartet and yes. In the vision,
- 35:05Speaker 1: they are described as all having that power ability. It
- 35:07Speaker 1: does not include describing Elaine's children in that way. But
- 35:11Speaker 1: it's a worthy question.
- 35:13Speaker 2: We don't find anything out about Elaine's children, do we.
- 35:16Speaker 1: No. No, they meet one of them, who's the Queen
- 35:19Speaker 1: of Andor. They go into the meeting with the Queen
- 35:21Speaker 1: of Andor, and it's very antagonistic. They're supposed to be
- 35:24Speaker 1: friends because their mothers were friends, but they're not friends,
- 35:28Speaker 1: so we don't get into her head at all.
- 35:29Speaker 2: And they're siblings, they're half siblings.
- 35:32Speaker 1: Yeah that too.
- 35:34Speaker 2: Anyway, grumble grumble, grumble.
- 35:38Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. So yeah, she's pacing back and forth
- 35:44Speaker 1: thinking about the Black Sisters and Duhara once again, I remember,
- 35:49Speaker 1: we don't know that Duhara is black Auger yet, right, So,
- 35:52Speaker 1: but Elaine is pacing frantically thinking about all these different things,
- 35:56Speaker 1: and it's mostly about black sisters and then a little
- 35:58Speaker 1: bit about Juhara. There's also so it's just like it's
- 36:01Speaker 1: that little foreshadowing of like, yeah, there's a reason why
- 36:04Speaker 1: Duhara is in the mix with all this other stuff,
- 36:06Speaker 1: Like it's because they're they're actually more similar than they
- 36:09Speaker 1: are separate and then we have a fun physical comedy
- 36:12Speaker 1: scene where different characters come in and have different responses,
- 36:16Speaker 1: like to the conversation. You don't actually see the conversation,
- 36:18Speaker 1: you just see people like look, so there's the women
- 36:21Speaker 1: that come in and say comment on the conversation they
- 36:24Speaker 1: just overheard. And then all the warders come in and
- 36:27Speaker 1: take one look at Hark and the position themselves to
- 36:29Speaker 1: like guard him, and it's it's a very like funny
- 36:33Speaker 1: set of passages. It's good physical comedy. Starting with what
- 36:37Speaker 1: hair brained crack painted scheme? Are you talking about? Brigida
- 36:40Speaker 1: from Van Deen? Which is just fantastic hair brained crack
- 36:45Speaker 1: painted Like, my god, I.
- 36:48Speaker 2: Always read that as crack brained, but yeah, I guess
- 36:50Speaker 2: you're right.
- 36:51Speaker 1: I definitely it means the same thing because Pate is head,
- 36:55Speaker 1: so you know it means the same thing.
- 36:58Speaker 2: But you know what kind of crackhead scheme you talk about?
- 37:00Speaker 2: Oh it's Elaine's.
- 37:01Speaker 1: Oh okay, yeah, two black sisters. Serena exclaimed, what about
- 37:08Speaker 1: Feliane and Marilyn Carriana asked, like, you know, it's very
- 37:13Speaker 1: sitcomy for a moment, and Hark just is like watching
- 37:16Speaker 1: us like every like scary warrior man comes into the room,
- 37:19Speaker 1: takes one look at him, and then takes up positions.
- 37:21Speaker 2: It's like this dude sketchy, and he's just.
- 37:23Speaker 1: Like, man, I'm not that scary. I don't need that
- 37:26Speaker 1: many cards, And I.
- 37:27Speaker 2: Like Sreita makes a good point. Even if he heard correctly,
- 37:30Speaker 2: nothing says they're still only two sisters in the house
- 37:33Speaker 2: or any If they have gone, there's no danger. But
- 37:35Speaker 2: if others have joined them, we might as well put
- 37:37Speaker 2: our necks in a noose and spring the traps ourselves.
- 37:41Speaker 2: Which considering that she is a good person who dies
- 37:45Speaker 2: because of this, yeah, she's the only real like victim
- 37:50Speaker 2: here that Elaine, because like you know, Vandin gets what
- 37:52Speaker 2: she wants and Kareein deserves to die.
- 37:56Speaker 1: But Sitha, Serena and her warders are actual like caught
- 38:02Speaker 1: in the crossfire victims of all this. Yeah, because yeah,
- 38:06Speaker 1: I'd say that Vandine and her warder were both on
- 38:08Speaker 1: a suicide mission the whole time, so like, definitely they're
- 38:11Speaker 1: not victims in the same way. But yeah, Soritha and
- 38:13Speaker 1: her guys like they're just doing their best, and their
- 38:18Speaker 1: best involves being cannon fodder.
- 38:22Speaker 2: Yeah, throw a red shirt on and move on. And
- 38:25Speaker 2: this chapter really makes you focus on Soretha as the
- 38:29Speaker 2: dark friend. It really seems to be pointing you in
- 38:31Speaker 2: that direction until it's the reveal that it is Kareem.
- 38:34Speaker 2: So I understand why you had that confusion earlier, Like
- 38:37Speaker 2: that's such an easy Like this whole chapter, you're reading
- 38:40Speaker 2: it like, Okay, Siretha's the dark friend. Cool, when's the reveal?
- 38:44Speaker 2: Oh no it's not.
- 38:45Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, j RJ really set me up for failure
- 38:50Speaker 1: on that one.
- 38:50Speaker 2: Yeah, good job well by not actually differentiating between the
- 38:54Speaker 2: characters enough right in the first place. Yeah, because the
- 38:57Speaker 2: only differentiation is one's dark friend and one's.
- 38:59Speaker 1: Not, and one's an s name and one's not, and
- 39:02Speaker 1: those two things are both more memorable, so clearly they're
- 39:05Speaker 1: the same person.
- 39:05Speaker 2: Well, and also you don't learn about the difference until
- 39:08Speaker 2: basically the end of their storyline.
- 39:10Speaker 1: Right, you are wonder they're both suspects?
- 39:14Speaker 2: Yes, whole time, Yes, the whole time.
- 39:16Speaker 1: Yeah, it's good writing on his part.
- 39:18Speaker 2: I also don't think I realized how much late at
- 39:21Speaker 2: night this was. I think reading it, somehow my brain
- 39:23Speaker 2: transported this to early morning that she waited until the
- 39:25Speaker 2: next morning to go out that she wasn't doing it
- 39:27Speaker 2: in the middle of the night. Yeah, this is like
- 39:29Speaker 2: pitch black middle of the night clandestine operations.
- 39:32Speaker 1: It is two in the morning, so it is technically
- 39:36Speaker 1: after midnight, but it is still the middle of the night.
- 39:39Speaker 1: But then the battle that puts her on the throne
- 39:41Speaker 1: takes place in daylight because dawn has arrived. Because it
- 39:45Speaker 1: is two in the morning, dawn is not far off.
- 39:47Speaker 2: Yeah, the sky to the east was still dark, but
- 39:49Speaker 2: it must be less than two hours still, first light.
- 39:52Speaker 1: Right, which four in the morning. Yeah, the very first
- 39:54Speaker 1: light when you don't have artificial light is yeah, you
- 39:56Speaker 1: have four or four thirty.
- 39:58Speaker 2: Trust me, I get up at that time. I know.
- 39:59Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 40:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 40:14Speaker 1: There's a scene here where they're walking through and I
- 40:18Speaker 1: had never really paid attention to the detail here. But
- 40:21Speaker 1: she's got soldiers parked in the parks. She's got soldiers
- 40:26Speaker 1: camping in the palace parks because it allows them to
- 40:31Speaker 1: be near their horses and near the traveling grounds. And
- 40:34Speaker 1: it's just like suddenly the palace grounds take on a
- 40:37Speaker 1: whole new look in my mind, because in my mind,
- 40:38Speaker 1: the palace is the palace. But like, no, she's brought
- 40:42Speaker 1: like whole cavalry units into parks that are normally open,
- 40:46Speaker 1: pleasant spaces for people to go walking and playing croquet
- 40:50Speaker 1: or whatever. Versailles. Bullshit is happening, right, and now it's
- 40:54Speaker 1: turned into like a war camp with like horses like
- 40:58Speaker 1: being picketed amongst the rose bushes and stuff, you know.
- 41:01Speaker 1: And I just had never seen that little half scene before.
- 41:04Speaker 2: I kind of think of it like an airport, right,
- 41:06Speaker 2: because gateways are creating this very localized zone where you
- 41:11Speaker 2: can skip over everything in between and come out in
- 41:13Speaker 2: this other very localized zone. And you want to create
- 41:16Speaker 2: these hubs of travel because it's very easy to create
- 41:19Speaker 2: a hub, so you can skip, you know, take different flights,
- 41:21Speaker 2: or you know, make connecting gateways. You know. Can you
- 41:24Speaker 2: imagine buying a ticket and it's like, okay, you got
- 41:26Speaker 2: to make your connecting gateway or it's going to close,
- 41:28Speaker 2: like I'm running late. Well, don't be too late. You'll
- 41:32Speaker 2: be sliced in half.
- 41:33Speaker 1: Yeah, this would never run again.
- 41:34Speaker 2: Yeah, but it's not my fault. My channeler was late
- 41:40Speaker 2: for my initial gateway, right right, yeah, yeah, but yeah,
- 41:44Speaker 2: I kind of imagine this as a hub, right for
- 41:46Speaker 2: where she's sending out all troops out to various because
- 41:49Speaker 2: didn't you say, like it's too big to patrol the walls.
- 41:52Speaker 2: So basically what they do is they have messengers come.
- 41:55Speaker 2: I forget how they get the messenger back, but they
- 41:57Speaker 2: send messages back to the central location, and then they
- 42:01Speaker 2: just send the troops out to the location where the
- 42:03Speaker 2: attack is rather than manning.
- 42:04Speaker 4: All the walls.
- 42:06Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, and like so so yeah, they're not using
- 42:08Speaker 1: the horses necessarily every time. It's mostly on foot. But yeah,
- 42:11Speaker 1: they're all right there, like in like these nice garden
- 42:15Speaker 1: parks where like normally only the nobility hangout, and these
- 42:18Speaker 1: are just like normal soldiers just like vibing next to
- 42:22Speaker 1: these exotic flowers that have been maintained all the time,
- 42:25Speaker 1: and their horses are just like being carefully kept away
- 42:27Speaker 1: from like the petunias.
- 42:29Speaker 2: And some horses sitting on Elida's roses that she put
- 42:34Speaker 2: a lot of power into creating.
- 42:36Speaker 1: He's fertilizing them.
- 42:38Speaker 2: Ah, that's a lot of horseshit.
- 42:44Speaker 1: It is a lot of horseshit. Horses shit so much. So, yeah,
- 42:48Speaker 1: that's that's just a fun little like I had never
- 42:50Speaker 1: noticed that scenery detail like in this, and it just
- 42:53Speaker 1: stood out to me, like, wow, the palace has really
- 42:56Speaker 1: changed in an olfactory and auditorium and material way as
- 43:01Speaker 1: an experience.
- 43:03Speaker 2: You know, mm hmm. Yeah, Alane's created something a little
- 43:05Speaker 2: bit different with the resources she has. Yes, So they
- 43:08Speaker 2: they end up to the house right, and Hark points
- 43:10Speaker 2: it out and it's got a light on the second floor.
- 43:12Speaker 1: Yeah, they ride out, They ride through the old city
- 43:15Speaker 1: out to the new city, ride through a bunch of
- 43:16Speaker 1: twisting streets. It's like a whole thing. And then yeah,
- 43:19Speaker 1: Hark's like, I'm gonna be as far back at the
- 43:22Speaker 1: back of the party as possible, while still pointing at
- 43:24Speaker 1: the house in question.
- 43:26Speaker 2: Jamee Van Deene's warder heads out and basically does the
- 43:29Speaker 2: scouting inside the house.
- 43:31Speaker 1: Yeah, he does the don't look like you're sneaking and
- 43:33Speaker 1: then no one will assume that you're not where you
- 43:35Speaker 1: should be trick.
- 43:37Speaker 2: And he comes across the guy who killed Bores Jacob Cardon, Yes.
- 43:44Speaker 1: The man who actually did the dumping of the brandy barrel. Yes.
- 43:47Speaker 1: And the guy who's been forcibly paired off with Fhallion.
- 43:51Speaker 2: Also, and his name is Murrellen.
- 43:55Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, Faalian has to put up with him because
- 43:59Speaker 1: melar Is is like not properly abusing her. It's a
- 44:04Speaker 1: whole weird thing. He's not great. He's a bit part,
- 44:06Speaker 1: but he's not great.
- 44:08Speaker 2: He's only really in two scenes, the murder of Bores
- 44:11Speaker 2: and then this scene here, so we can see him
- 44:14Speaker 2: be electrous murderer and then a drunken idiot.
- 44:18Speaker 1: Yeah, and he just gets tied up so that he
- 44:19Speaker 1: can't do anything. Presumably he you know, wakes up at
- 44:23Speaker 1: some point and gets free somehow and wanders off to
- 44:26Speaker 1: find other dark friends to work for her.
- 44:27Speaker 2: Well, yeah, I'm assuming the dark because the Dark Friends
- 44:29Speaker 2: kind of win here, right, So I assume they just
- 44:30Speaker 2: go down and on tie him.
- 44:31Speaker 1: Oh right, yeah, no, they probably totally yeah, because they
- 44:34Speaker 1: need him to like drive the wagon or whatever.
- 44:36Speaker 2: So right, yeah right.
- 44:38Speaker 1: Also, also doors are unlocked trusting for dark friends Joe, yes,
- 44:44Speaker 1: and or it's oh, these seem to be rather trusting
- 44:46Speaker 1: dark friends, And it's like this very much supports the
- 44:49Speaker 1: idea that they wanted that this is a track. There's
- 44:51Speaker 1: a drop that they wanted to land to get in. However,
- 44:54Speaker 1: she tries to get in, She's gonna find it relatively
- 44:56Speaker 1: easy to get into the trap because it's a fucking
- 44:58Speaker 1: trap because dark friends they're never trusting. There are no
- 45:01Speaker 1: trusting dark friends.
- 45:02Speaker 2: They're like, here, drink this wine and go pass out
- 45:04Speaker 2: in the stable, right like they wanted him to do that, exactly, exactly,
- 45:08Speaker 2: no good catch. I highlighted that, but I didn't think
- 45:10Speaker 2: about how. Yeah, of course it's open they want it's trapped. Yeah, yeah,
- 45:15Speaker 2: So yeah, Elaine sets up this sort of clever She
- 45:17Speaker 2: knows that either Saritha or Karene are dark friends, so
- 45:21Speaker 2: she has Vanden meld the flows with Karene, who is
- 45:26Speaker 2: the dark friend, and so Vandean's in control, and then
- 45:28Speaker 2: she's in control of the flows with Siritha. And she
- 45:31Speaker 2: says it's just like, oh, it's two on two, we
- 45:32Speaker 2: won't get overwhelmed, right, which makes sense, But it's also
- 45:35Speaker 2: just so that like she doesn't have a dark friend
- 45:37Speaker 2: channeling behind.
- 45:38Speaker 1: Her, right, and so she can can control it, so
- 45:40Speaker 1: that two people who are good can control the weaves.
- 45:42Speaker 1: And Serritha's the one who complains the most, but they
- 45:45Speaker 1: both complain, so again really keeping your eye on Siritha.
- 45:49Speaker 1: And so yeah, she uses the power to invert their
- 45:52Speaker 1: ability to make it a little easier for the sneaky
- 45:54Speaker 1: sneaking to.
- 45:55Speaker 2: Work, and Kareene makes a little sigh. Once they're inside.
- 45:58Speaker 1: May they go into the house and carreem size with
- 46:03Speaker 1: relieve And at that point, at that point, you should
- 46:07Speaker 1: know Darkfrid. That's how you know it's the Dark Friend,
- 46:09Speaker 1: because she is now trying to alert whoever's in the house.
- 46:12Speaker 2: And don't forget, she's also the same one that took
- 46:14Speaker 2: her hood off when they were going into the kin
- 46:17Speaker 2: and caused them all to scatter. She's the one who
- 46:19Speaker 2: like revealed a little bit. Oh whoops, accidental reveal.
- 46:23Speaker 1: Weaponize incompetence right here, y' that's what this is.
- 46:26Speaker 2: Yeah, whoops, I made a mistake inside. No, you didn't.
- 46:29Speaker 2: You were trying to let someone know you were in here.
- 46:31Speaker 1: Because she doesn't know it's a trap, she's assuming that
- 46:34Speaker 1: Elene is actually doing getting one up on the Dark Friends.
- 46:37Speaker 1: She has no idea that there's actually a trap here.
- 46:39Speaker 1: She's doing her part to try to allow them to
- 46:42Speaker 1: put together a trap at the last minute, not realizing
- 46:45Speaker 1: the trap is much bigger than that, because how would
- 46:47Speaker 1: she now.
- 46:48Speaker 2: Do you think the Red Sister Duhara has any involvement
- 46:54Speaker 2: in this or do you think she's independently being set.
- 46:57Speaker 2: I think it's completely independent because I think she's on
- 46:59Speaker 2: a different mission.
- 47:00Speaker 1: And yeah, I agree with that. I feel like she's
- 47:03Speaker 1: in a very different silo of dark friendery. They have
- 47:06Speaker 1: so much isolation and sell isolation basically that. Yeah, I
- 47:10Speaker 1: think that's a coincidence. Maybe somebody somewhere high up knows
- 47:15Speaker 1: that they're both happening at the same time, But yeah,
- 47:17Speaker 1: I don't think they're connected deliberately agreed. Okay, So they
- 47:21Speaker 1: get up there to the door. Elaine's able to overhear
- 47:24Speaker 1: a conversation briefly where Shane is scolding the other two
- 47:28Speaker 1: eyes to die, who are facing away, So she's able
- 47:30Speaker 1: to dramatically enter the room, put shields on them, put
- 47:34Speaker 1: bonds of air on them, formally read out the charges.
- 47:38Speaker 1: Everything's going great and then boom, everything is not going
- 47:43Speaker 1: so great.
- 47:43Speaker 2: And then spark. So there's one of the tarangreal that
- 47:45Speaker 2: was stolen way back in you know what, book two
- 47:49Speaker 2: three when they're going to tan Chico.
- 47:51Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, this is an old turn, and this was
- 47:54Speaker 1: brought up in the conversation. They have powerful ter on Grell.
- 47:57Speaker 1: You've seen them have perful terur on Greyl may, we
- 48:00Speaker 1: should be careful of the powerful tarangria all wait that
- 48:02Speaker 1: they have that we don't even know what they all do.
- 48:04Speaker 1: And Elaine's just like skipping inside with glee. Burgita thought
- 48:08Speaker 1: this would be dangerous. Magical tarangriol hits her upside the head.
- 48:11Speaker 2: It's just like, ah, yeah, oh, can I say it
- 48:13Speaker 2: drove me a little nuts again doing my reread and
- 48:17Speaker 2: ninive when the tearran grirall were stolen, knew what bail
- 48:22Speaker 2: was like, Oh, one of those Tarangriral the black Rod
- 48:24Speaker 2: produces bailfire, right, knows what bailfire is. Know the black
- 48:28Speaker 2: Rod produces bailfire. The black Rod shoots bailfire at her
- 48:31Speaker 2: when she's fighting Mogedi in in the famous Battle of Tanchiko,
- 48:34Speaker 2: when they're just staring at each other doing nothing right.
- 48:36Speaker 2: She identifies and in that moment she goes, oh, that's bailfire, right,
- 48:41Speaker 2: because I know the rod produces bailfire. Later in another book,
- 48:46Speaker 2: she's exposed to bailfire where Randon and Rovin I believe
- 48:51Speaker 2: her fighting and they're throwing bail fire at each other.
- 48:53Speaker 2: She goes, I have no idea what that weave is
- 48:55Speaker 2: that strange molten light yep, And I go, wait, you've
- 48:59Speaker 2: seen bailfire. You know what bail fire was. You identified
- 49:03Speaker 2: it as coming from this black rod. So anyway, I
- 49:06Speaker 2: think that was a I actually caught a bit of
- 49:08Speaker 2: an error.
- 49:09Speaker 1: Yep, that is a continenty air for sure.
- 49:11Speaker 2: But that just brings it up because the rod is
- 49:13Speaker 2: back right like they kind of reference that again.
- 49:16Speaker 1: Yeah, and this is not the bailfire rod. This is
- 49:19Speaker 1: the stun gun rod right right, And this is it's
- 49:22Speaker 1: we get a little bit of really like shoehorned in
- 49:24Speaker 1: exposition about it. But it's essentially like a stun gun
- 49:28Speaker 1: that you can change. It's more like a phaser from
- 49:30Speaker 1: Star Trek really, because you could pick how how intense
- 49:34Speaker 1: the punch is at a greater distance than a stunt
- 49:37Speaker 1: gun really has. So it's more like a phaser that
- 49:40Speaker 1: doesn't have a lethal setting as far as I can tell,
- 49:43Speaker 1: but it's enough to startle and disrupt their connection to Sidar,
- 49:48Speaker 1: which is I think a big part of what the
- 49:50Speaker 1: sparks are supposed to do is to Because I'm assuming
- 49:54Speaker 1: this is a weapon, well, no, she says, it's a
- 49:55Speaker 1: weapon from the age of legends, So I'm assuming it
- 49:57Speaker 1: was meant to be used on channelers to disrupt their
- 50:00Speaker 1: ability to channel long enough to then put a shield
- 50:03Speaker 1: on them. Even if they're channeling and linked and angry
- 50:05Speaker 1: aled up. If they lose the source for a moment,
- 50:08Speaker 1: that means that their amplitudes all the way back to
- 50:10Speaker 1: zero and you can shield them just as easy as
- 50:12Speaker 1: anyone else.
- 50:14Speaker 2: Would you call this a shock lance?
- 50:16Speaker 1: I would assume a shock lance would be bigger, more
- 50:19Speaker 1: of a rifle type item, or even a lance type item.
- 50:24Speaker 1: I imagine this is more like oath rod sized. Yeah,
- 50:26Speaker 1: she's a small bent black rod, perhaps an inch in diameter.
- 50:31Speaker 1: So I feel like shock lance invokes a larger object
- 50:34Speaker 1: to me.
- 50:35Speaker 2: Yes, But at the same time, you know, rods of
- 50:38Speaker 2: Dominion were apparently people. Yeah, right, So you know a
- 50:43Speaker 2: lance could be just anything you point at somebody right
- 50:46Speaker 2: and lances out electricity.
- 50:48Speaker 1: I feel like we get a description of a shock
- 50:52Speaker 1: lance in a dark in a forsaken scene at one point,
- 50:57Speaker 1: either that or at least someone just says, ooh, is
- 50:59Speaker 1: that a shock But I don't know if we should
- 51:01Speaker 1: get a visual of it.
- 51:05Speaker 2: Yeah. Almost nothing is known about shock lances other than
- 51:07Speaker 2: the name.
- 51:08Speaker 1: Okay, so it's one of those things where it gets
- 51:10Speaker 1: mentioned but not described. Yeah, all right, well it could
- 51:15Speaker 1: be a shock lance.
- 51:16Speaker 2: Morgan shows one to Grendel. When's that Ah, it's.
- 51:21Speaker 1: Where the line I'm thinking of comes from.
- 51:23Speaker 2: Towers of Midnight, chapter five, Encyclopedia. Watt's not working right now,
- 51:27Speaker 2: so I'm using the way back machine. Yeah, he's got
- 51:31Speaker 2: a shock lance a blinder. I don't think it describes it.
- 51:35Speaker 2: It's just like a shock lance.
- 51:37Speaker 1: Yeah. I just don't like a handheld object being called
- 51:39Speaker 1: a lance. That just does not work from my brain
- 51:45Speaker 1: doesn't mean it's not correct. I just disagree if it
- 51:48Speaker 1: is correct, and I don't think it should be.
- 51:50Speaker 2: Ye having hema on facing an army full of people
- 51:52Speaker 2: with those things that can just kill you at a
- 51:54Speaker 2: distance if they pointed at you and pull the trigger,
- 51:56Speaker 2: and the one power is can't stop it or do
- 51:58Speaker 2: anything about it.
- 51:59Speaker 1: I mean sounds like a World War One sort of moment. Yeah, yep,
- 52:05Speaker 1: it's like wait, gatling guns do what now?
- 52:08Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like again we didn't know. Yeah, we get
- 52:10Speaker 2: references to these things, but again, this is never it's like, oh,
- 52:13Speaker 2: there's there's a shock lance moving on, You're like, but
- 52:16Speaker 2: what is it, Jordan, you describe everything?
- 52:18Speaker 1: Come on, kim me right, right, but this is shocking.
- 52:22Speaker 1: It does seem to be literally utilizing some kind of
- 52:25Speaker 1: like electrical shock charge kind of thing. So that's fair.
- 52:30Speaker 2: I imagine it's producing some sort of yeah, some sort
- 52:32Speaker 2: of charge at a distance. Right.
- 52:35Speaker 1: I wonder if this is a controlled and amplified version
- 52:38Speaker 1: of what Sita did when she was trying to like
- 52:42Speaker 1: worm her way into lessons from the iside. Right, she
- 52:45Speaker 1: did something that caused a cascade of sparks over the isidye,
- 52:48Speaker 1: that caused them to leap about, Like, I wonder if
- 52:51Speaker 1: she was stumbling onto the uh. One of the root
- 52:54Speaker 1: ingredients for this tool maybe a handheld chock lance, kind
- 52:58Speaker 1: of like a handgun versus a rifle. Like sure, yeah,
- 53:00Speaker 1: maybe there's a little shocks stick, but they still call
- 53:04Speaker 1: them lances just because brand. Yeah, but it works. It
- 53:09Speaker 1: allows for the whole party to get disabled all in
- 53:12Speaker 1: one fell swoop, to the point that Elaine doesn't think
- 53:14Speaker 1: it's worth getting rescued.
- 53:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm assuming it's all getting basically yet taste is
- 53:18Speaker 2: my just based on the description of it.
- 53:20Speaker 1: Yeah, it sure seems like it. The only difference is
- 53:22Speaker 1: that there's not little like metal bits attached to wires.
- 53:25Speaker 1: It's actually a wireless taser.
- 53:28Speaker 2: The Dark Friends realize the girls have a way of
- 53:29Speaker 2: inverting their weaves and hiding their ability to channel right,
- 53:32Speaker 2: because they're not using that and like, why did you
- 53:34Speaker 2: just stand there? And they're like, we were caught, Like oh,
- 53:37Speaker 2: we couldn't see it.
- 53:38Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. They they learned that there's more to the
- 53:40Speaker 1: power than the Dark Friends above them have been sharing
- 53:43Speaker 1: all in one quick moment, because this is stuff that
- 53:46Speaker 1: they learned that Elaine learned from Mogedian, right, like they
- 53:50Speaker 1: were under Mgeddian's patronage and they never got these tricks
- 53:53Speaker 1: out of her.
- 53:57Speaker 2: And so then they talk about, Okay, we're gonna kill
- 53:59Speaker 2: them all just because we only need a lane, and
- 54:02Speaker 2: Marilyn says, spare Carrinine because she's at our friend, which
- 54:07Speaker 2: is all Vanding needs to use that knife.
- 54:10Speaker 1: Yeah, she has that knife ready to go. The second
- 54:13Speaker 1: that she hears carry On being carry Ona being defended
- 54:16Speaker 1: by the Dark Friends, she is like, mmm, no, no,
- 54:19Speaker 1: your Ajorda is mine. You are dead.
- 54:22Speaker 2: Yeah, up through the rip cage into the heart. She
- 54:24Speaker 2: pretty much is dead by the time she hits the ground.
- 54:26Speaker 2: No chance of.
- 54:26Speaker 1: Recovery, yeah there is. Yeah, she makes sure to give
- 54:29Speaker 1: her a blow that will kill her fast, so there's
- 54:32Speaker 1: no saving her. And then she gets killed very nearly
- 54:34Speaker 1: as quick as she knows she has to move fast
- 54:36Speaker 1: to get that revenge killing in and yes, yes she does.
- 54:40Speaker 2: And Chessmel the healer in quotes uses an inverted healing
- 54:45Speaker 2: weave to basically kill a vandine. I think that's what
- 54:49Speaker 2: it is, that that mix of fire, earth and water.
- 54:53Speaker 2: Is this like inverted heeling.
- 54:54Speaker 1: Because like you remember, Chesmel is yellow, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 54:57Speaker 1: and she can stop a man's heart quite easily, like yeah, no,
- 55:00Speaker 1: she definitely uses some little thing to cause yeah, brain failure,
- 55:04Speaker 1: organ failure, heart failure like she does.
- 55:06Speaker 2: Heart failure would be my assumption there.
- 55:08Speaker 1: Yeah, one assumes that either that or she just like
- 55:10Speaker 1: severs the spinal column or like seizures it out or something.
- 55:14Speaker 1: But yeah, I mean they just drop right like that.
- 55:16Speaker 1: That does sound like heart failing.
- 55:17Speaker 2: And she doesn't hesitate a second for were taking out
- 55:20Speaker 2: Seritha as well?
- 55:20Speaker 1: Oh yeah no, because the only one they need is
- 55:23Speaker 1: a laine. Everyone else is useless deadweight and sheess was
- 55:26Speaker 1: even like, oh, I'd enjoy playing with her. No, Tamyla says,
- 55:29Speaker 1: I'd enjoy playing with them, but we're on a schedule
- 55:32Speaker 1: and the only one we need is Elaine. And again
- 55:35Speaker 1: this further points to the idea that this was a trap.
- 55:38Speaker 1: They knew that they would be able to abscond with
- 55:41Speaker 1: a high value hostage if they pulled this off right this,
- 55:45Speaker 1: They did not have to figure out the ooh, should
- 55:47Speaker 1: we capture her or kill her? They know they want
- 55:49Speaker 1: to capture her. They already know what they're gonna do
- 55:52Speaker 1: if they capture her. They've thought this because it's a trap.
- 55:56Speaker 2: It's a trap, that's yeah, it's just the good old
- 55:59Speaker 2: fashioned trap getting into. As I said in the.
- 56:01Speaker 1: Beginning, it's an Andoran cultural trait to see a trap
- 56:05Speaker 1: right into it.
- 56:07Speaker 2: Well, I'm good old trap getting into later, Barton, I'm
- 56:11Speaker 2: gonna have a good old time and trip inside, That's
- 56:15Speaker 2: what I'm thinking.
- 56:16Speaker 1: And then it ends with Elaine telling Brigida to run
- 56:20Speaker 1: mentally and wishing that the bond would work telepathically, and
- 56:23Speaker 1: Brandon Sanderson was like, ooh, yeah, telepathic bond, how can
- 56:27Speaker 1: I And uh, yeah, it's a very exciting cliffhanger of
- 56:32Speaker 1: a chapter. We're going to be in the tension of
- 56:36Speaker 1: this moment for a couple of chapters, I think, and
- 56:39Speaker 1: it'll conclude in a very satisfying way. But we are
- 56:42Speaker 1: in the thick of the hair pulling right now.
- 56:44Speaker 2: Yeah, we get two more chapters and at the end
- 56:46Speaker 2: of it, the Lane comes out on top somehow. So yay,
- 56:51Speaker 2: it's a heerin because by no fault of her own,
- 56:54Speaker 2: for sure.
- 56:56Speaker 1: I mean it's a bit of the chess game all
- 56:59Speaker 1: concludes at once, right, there's this like strategic cat and
- 57:02Speaker 1: mouse for dimensional chess thing that she manages to win
- 57:05Speaker 1: because things break her way and she then has an
- 57:08Speaker 1: unassailable position at the end. But yeah, it's like feels
- 57:12Speaker 1: a little tevere and how well it works, but also
- 57:16Speaker 1: it's the most satisfying way it could end, so I'm
- 57:19Speaker 1: not mad about it.
- 57:21Speaker 2: No, And we finally got a conclusion to Van Deen's
- 57:25Speaker 2: quest for Vandeen Natalius. I mean, these were some of
- 57:28Speaker 2: our earliest eyes to die right that we meet Varren
- 57:31Speaker 2: Moraine and then Adalius and Vanden right like they are
- 57:34Speaker 2: in book two. They are the ones Moraine is meeting
- 57:37Speaker 2: super early on these are old school characters, so we
- 57:40Speaker 2: just kind of get a conclusion to their their plotline
- 57:42Speaker 2: and their story, which I like a lot.
- 57:44Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, it's really satisfying. It's very like it's not
- 57:49Speaker 1: full circle because obviously we're leaving them in a very
- 57:51Speaker 1: different place than I found them, But like that they
- 57:54Speaker 1: don't just peter out and get lost. That they actually
- 57:57Speaker 1: have a conclusion is pro foundly satisfying, even if it
- 58:01Speaker 1: is a sad conclusion.
- 58:03Speaker 2: But it is. You don't fuck with one because the
- 58:06Speaker 2: other one will take you down. And did.
- 58:07Speaker 1: It's true. It's true. If you take down my sister,
- 58:11Speaker 1: I will literally devote the rest of my life to
- 58:13Speaker 1: taking you down, even with no regard for my own safety.
- 58:17Speaker 1: Like you, life is forfeit. Your life is completely forfeit,
- 58:20Speaker 1: because my life is forfeit, and the only thing I
- 58:22Speaker 1: have left to do is to take you out. And
- 58:23Speaker 1: she did, and she did very successfully. Good on you,
- 58:27Speaker 1: Vanden green Aja.
- 58:28Speaker 2: To the end, and Van Deen was green.
- 58:32Speaker 1: Yep, vengeance achieved. I don't know that Adalius would have
- 58:36Speaker 1: necessarily had the knife skills to pull that off. I honestly,
- 58:42Speaker 1: I as sue she would have killed carry on just
- 58:44Speaker 1: as fast as Vandein. I don't think she would have
- 58:45Speaker 1: struggled that hard just because she was brown Aja.
- 58:48Speaker 2: I bet logically she would have figured it out way
- 58:50Speaker 2: earlier and killed her.
- 58:52Speaker 1: You know, the brown Naja might have figured it out
- 58:54Speaker 1: sooner than the green Aja. Yeah, my green sister. Perhaps
- 59:00Speaker 1: maybe perhaps we're not. They were basically the same person.
- 59:02Speaker 1: They shared one brand sell right.
- 59:04Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, all right. I don't think I have anything
- 59:08Speaker 2: else to say about that except yeah, I'm looking forward to
- 59:10Speaker 2: the next two chapters where we get to wrap up
- 59:13Speaker 2: the whole Elaine succession plotline.
- 59:15Speaker 1: Yeah, it's gonna be an exciting payoff e time because
- 59:18Speaker 1: we are in the end of Knife of Dreams and
- 59:21Speaker 1: I am really enjoying it. This is good, This is
- 59:23Speaker 1: really fun. I'm having a great time with these rereads.
- 59:26Speaker 1: I'm just like finding myself really engrossed in the story
- 59:29Speaker 1: for its own sake. It's good.
- 59:31Speaker 4: But my babies, my babes.
- 59:33Speaker 2: Well babes. Yeah, not looking forward to that part though.
- 59:36Speaker 1: We're gonna have her moment of truth eventually when she goes.
- 59:39Speaker 2: Maybe maybe it wasn't a good idea you think, you
- 59:43Speaker 2: think eventually, but that's later. That's because that doesn't happen
- 59:47Speaker 2: until Melar captures.
- 59:48Speaker 1: Yeah, which which doesn't happen until like many steps because
- 59:52Speaker 1: of this, like yeah, no, we're I've I've managed to
- 59:55Speaker 1: be to get a little bit on listening ahead into
- 59:59Speaker 1: the next books, and I'm like, you know, oh yeah,
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: yeah this this is a fun like way that this
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: continued because a lot of these characters don't die, a
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: lot of them go on to have many more plot arcs.
- 1:00:10Speaker 4: And.
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: But this is nonetheless a very satisfying piece of that.
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, well it just feels like stuff is moving again.
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: You know, it's like after being constipated for three books, like, yes,
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: we haven't gotten everything out, but things.
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: Are moving again exactly. We are in the motion and
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: that is enough to celebrate.
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: Why does that feel good?
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: It really does. But yeah, that's all I've got. That's all.
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: That's all he wrote.
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: All Right, folks, see you next time.
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: Bye bye.
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: Audacity is not your friend.
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: Audacity is having some audacity right now.
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: The audacity of that program, I tell you what.
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: It's almost as weird if a name is reaper, if
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: you're talking about like branding, it's like, what are we
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: what are we doing? What are we doing? Exactly?
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: But anyway, we're reaping sound to deadly. Yeah, I know,
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: you're right, it doesn't work.
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm like, I'm producing content. It's like the opposite
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: of death. But whatever.
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: Well, Audacity obviously has it's an audio right.
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: Sure, yes, exactly exactly. I don't know what Reaper's origins.
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: Maybe they're coming for the other programs that edit sound.
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: Yes, them and their open source methodology, their open source Well.
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: Don't you know open source is going to rule the
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: world any minute now?
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: Sure? Yes, my sixty dollars every three years is really
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: take over the world every two years. I don't know
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: it's for two versions. Anyway. I had to renew the
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: license recently, but I'm happy to do that because they
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: fucking deserve it. It's such a cool program. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: I didn't know that it was a license that only
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: covered two full versions of the software. I just thought
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: it was like a lifetime license. But given that they
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: put out updates every two weeks, you know, every two
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: full versions is like, yes, every two or three years.
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, the amount of money I make with
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: this software, that's fine, that's fine.
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: That and then we're also finally paying Blue Dot sessions correctly.
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: Well, they finally made it possible for indie producers us
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: to pay them, Yeah, correctly. Yes, Blue Doot Sessions finally
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: came out with a license that is for indie producers.
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: They used to have one that was like a blanket
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: license for people whose projects were under five hundred dollars
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: a month budget, which was like their attempt at it.
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: But I think they must have heard people like me
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: being like, this doesn't fit my model, and now they're
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: just like, for twelve dollars a month, you can just
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: have access to the library. Just just go for it,
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: just have whatever content you want, just kind of on
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: the honor system of like be a small it'sy bitsy business.
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: I think they did have me put in like my
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: like our website and something, but it's basically on the
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: honor system. It's basically open source. But it was very
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: nice to go from like I don't know how to
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: pay you in a way that fits what we have, right,
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: so I guess I'm stealing it.
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: Yeah. It was either like give you all of our
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: revenue ever for access to your entire catalog when all
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: we want to use is one snippet of one song, yeah,
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: or don't pay them because it's also open source and available,
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: and that's why I got it.
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: Yeah, and I bought a one time use license for
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: it that was supposed to cover like five uses of
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: it for like a limited run podcast, and I was like,
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: I mean, this is the closest thing you have to
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: a tip jar. So so yeah, they've recently rolled out
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: a platform where you can just pay them a monthly
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: fee to have access to it like a reasonable person.
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: And it's nice because they rolled that out right as
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: I was adding another podcast that needed music, and of
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: course I went to blue dot Sessions because every time
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: I've gone there looking for music, it's very easy to
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: find exactly what I want. And I found a piece
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: and I got it, and I was just like, I'm
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: gonna kind of also steal this on the side because
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: her podcast has even less income. And like that same
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: month they rolled this subscription out. It was like, nice,
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: thank you, thank you. Now I am paying correctly for
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: this new piece of music that I'm using, as well
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: as the piece of music I've been using for years.
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: This is fantastic. I like blueout Sessions. Their interface to
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: find new music is really cool. Every time the song
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: that I ended up picking was one of the top
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: three results that they give me from my first search. Like,
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: it's a very very cool, like all the little sliders
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: they have on the side to filter the music. You
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: might be like, no, I want more upbeat. There's a
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: freaking slider for that. It's very very cool. It's impressive
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: that it's it's very very neat. I like it a lot. Yeah,
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: Oh my god. Okay, So have you ever taken a
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: suturing class? No, it's really cool and really weird. I
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: got to do one over the weekend.
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: For like suturings wounds right.
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: Yes, yes, I went to a disaster expo on the
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: coast where they had a bunch of information and talks
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: about the Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake and all of the
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: fallout from that, And they included a suturing class with
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: a twenty dollars per person fee, and they provided us
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: with a little kit of tools that we got to
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: take home of tweezers and scissors and a needle driver,
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: And they also provided us with a pig's foot, like
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: is a cold pigs foot on a towel and a
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: scalpel to make a incision in it, and then some
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: needles and suture thread and gloves, and there was a
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: surgeon and a surgical assistant and they taught us how
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: to put the needle through the flesh and make a knot.
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: And the knot was really difficult. Even though they said
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: it was easy, it was really hard.
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: No, it's not shut up.
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: I see what you did there, and no I didn't.
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: But it was very I'm we didn't. It was super cool.
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: It was super weird, for sure. I'm just gonna edit
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: all that.
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: I can't stop not making jokes about it.
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: So now if I ever have to suit your some one,
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: it will not be the first time. Oh my god,
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: I know. Fuck you, We're done. It's over, everything's done out,
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: go away, yes pants. It was very me because disasters
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: that I had to go.
- 1:07:26Speaker 4: I had to go.
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: I did because you created an impossible situation.
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: Okay, I'm coming back in a seconds now.
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: I can't edit any of that out because it's all
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: the build up to this just moment of chaos that
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: we're all witnessing.
- 1:07:49Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: Otherwise, there was then a really cool talk about the
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: CSC response, and it covered everything that I learned in college.
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: I basically watched it to make sure that they got
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: their information right. And they did, and they covered all
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: the stuff I needed that I needed them to cover,
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: which was very cool, including the CEI up in Portland,
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: the Critical Energy Infrastructure Hub that is an absolute bomb
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: waiting to go off, series of bombs technically. But yeah,
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: it was just and then you know, like there was
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: your basic like the cops and the local ham radio
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: club and like a whole bunch of stuff, got a
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: bunch of info. Free water bottles. Nice, Yeah, you got
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: to love a free water bottle. But yeah, future in class.
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: It was weird.
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: Never had her bachelorette party this week and she was
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: actually a three day event. They got her hotel and
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: they actually got a boat out on the river and
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: they went for yeah, and it was like they didn't
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: have a captain or anything. It was like they were
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: allowed to drive the boat themselves. And it was yeah,
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: that's what I said, but it was like limited like
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: five miles an hours as fast.
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: As it goes, Okay, that's le's okay.
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: Yeah, but they had a blast. They had a blast
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: out on the out on the river and they went
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: to karaoke and did all sorts of fun stuff and yeah,
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: just sounded like a blast, but I went to help.
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: You know, basically, when they were done, I was referring
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: people everywhere, and so I had a day or two
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: of sort of driving people to where they needed to
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: go and making and getting sure everyone got fed because
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: it was sort of like it ended, and then they
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: kind of didn't really have great plans on how to
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: get back. So ah, yeah, yeah, they'd all like come
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: to the hotel. Yeah, so I got to show up
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: for the like the hangover brunch after the three days
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: of partying, and let me tell you, the energy there
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: was very different than the ones I saw on the videos.
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: A good time was that.
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: A good time was had. Very few people were able
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: to stomach any of the breakfast food. A lot of
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: uneaten breakfast sat on that table for about an hour
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: while people pushed around, pushed it around and went, oh,
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: I don't feel so good.
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: Well that's good. It sounds like memories had the potential
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: to be formed, except for the amount of drugs that waste.
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: Photos were had. Okay, okay, the events so like memories
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: exist in photographic form, but definitely there's a few of
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: those photos where never goes I don't, I don't remember
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: that I don't know what's going on there.
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: Well, that sounds like it was very much her speed
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: and not at all the speed that your bachelor party
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: was at.
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: No, No, my speed, My bachelor speed was slightly different.
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: But but I'm glad that she got she got what
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: she wanted. Yes, she had the experience that she was
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: looking for, and that's the point. Yes, and so did you,
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: and that's you both got what you wanted to get
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: out of that obligatory experience.
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: But she had, you know, she had friends who flew
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: from pretty far away to come in for the just
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: for the bachelorette party. So wow, yeah, they had they
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: had good time. And the people who've you know, you
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: live in one city long enough and people disperse and
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: it's just it's hard to keep everyone in the same
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: place at any given time. So you make friends over time,
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: and you have to bring him back in and it
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: takes good friends to fly out.
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure, for sure. The other thing I did
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: over the weekend was go into town into the valley
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: and see some family who had flown in from Texas, specifically,
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: like my aunt brought my grandpa, like, because he's getting
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: older and it would be nice for him to get
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: to see the Oregon branch of the family, and Texas
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: is a long way away, so she like brought him
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: so that we could come hang out with him for
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: an afternoon. And I got to me one of my cousins,
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: which was cool because I've never actually met my cousins
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: in person because Texas and I grew up in Oregon.
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: How did that go? I was the meeting?
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: It was great, It was great. I uh, yeah, my
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: grandpa's doing really well. You know, he's in his old
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: person decline, but like he's in a really good place
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: in his life. Also, like he's hit like a really
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: really good place like emotionally, and he's taking care of himself.
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: And so he was very like present and engaged. And
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: my aunt is really funny and intense. And yeah, my
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: cousin is nineteen and just like looks so much like
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: pictures of my dad at that age. Just like like
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: I just keep looking at him, being like, if this
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: was just if you're just wearing eighties.
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: Fashion, like you'd be identicult.
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: It's you know, it's how genetics work, I guess, But yeah,
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: it was. It was very fun. It was very nice.
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: My dad and his partner just bought a house and
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: they clearly love getting to entertain in it, Like she
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: loves having a house full of family, and it doesn't
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: even matter that it's not her family, Like she's just
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: so happy to be bustling around making sure everyone has tea,
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: And just like it was a fairy a good visit.
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: We only intended to stay for lunch, but ended up
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: staying for dinner because we were just having such a
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: good time talking and then it got late. And so
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: that's true.
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: I've got food. Yeah, that's awesome.
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: But yeah, the Texas is a really long way away.
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: We spent a lot of time comparing climates and just
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: how wildly different they are.
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: I remember, I.
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: Remember so far away and so disgusting.
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: Houston for three years. Let me tell you, one hundred
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: percent humidity and one hundred degrees outside was not uncommon
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: for more than a week at a time.
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: The one time I went to Texas, as I was
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: telling my cousin, was for his parents' wedding, which was, yeah,
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: the middle of summer in Houston. It was the one
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: time I've ever been to Texas. It was just like,
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: I did not know that the world produced a hellscape
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: on this level of no it is.
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: I did not know the only way to survive it
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: is air conditioning.
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: Truly, truly, you are dashing from air conditioned to pop
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: to air conditioned pod like this is not You're not
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: supposed to be here.
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: Like I'm like, may people like, can we survive on Mars?
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: I'm like, we survive in Houston. I don't see why not,
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: Like it can't be worse than that. Oh I rag
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: on it, but I really do hate it. I did
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: not like Houston, folks. I lived in Sugarland Suburbia, which
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: I mean it was. It used to be mud fields
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: where they grew sugar cane and they tore it down
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: and put up houses.
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: Uh huh, Yeah, that doesn't sound pleasant at all.
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: There's nothing anywhere. Ever, it's swampland so sometimes it floods.
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: That's that's the exciting part. But they've built they build
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: these giant levees. The levees are crazy. I've never seen
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: anything like it. They are these V shaped pits that
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: are just gigantic, and they're empty until it rains and
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: then a the roaring river is flowing down them and
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: you're like, wow, that would be sweeping over all over
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: our houses right now, if these lovees weren't in place.
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I just feel like the environment is sending a message. Yeah,
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: and that message is get the fuck out. I just
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: I don't. I don't think that you're supposed to be
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: there at least not year round.
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: And oh and people are saying that the food is amazing.
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: The food is amazing, right like in Houston. Don't get
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: me wrong. I didn't live in fucking Houston. I lived
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: in Sugarland. The closest restaurant was a forty five minute
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: drive away, all right. That wasn't an Applebee's or a
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: chain restaurant, you know. Yeah, it's the distances are crazy.
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, all the distances in Texas are a lot. Yeah.
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: My father in law spent a lot of his growing
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: up in Houston because his dad was working for NASA,
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: so you kind of have to be in one of
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: the NASA locations. But it was not that's a nice
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: one in California.
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: It's Houston right right now. And some people like and
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: I get some people defend it. There are good things
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: about Houston. I don't care because the heat makes whatever
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: else I'm doing there that might be okay.
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: Miserable, like heat becomes a non negotiable.
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: It's just like it's it doesn't matter if there's good food,
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: it doesn't matter, if there's good people, if there's a
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: lot of money. If I like, it doesn't matter if
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: there's big houses and fun stuff to do. I'm too
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: hot to enjoy any of it. Yeah, Or I'm too
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: cold because I was sweating and I came into the
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: air conditioning, which is fifty degrees and I'm soaking wet
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: from the sweat and then chilled to the bone in
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: the hot space of about thirty seconds.
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: Yeah. If I'm gonna have to endure heat, I'm gonna
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: need it to be a dry heat. That's the only
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: way you can convince me that I should attempt to
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: withstand a hot environment is if there is at least
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: the ability to have the sweat actually leave my body
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: and not just sit there and make me even nastier feeling.
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: Don't underestimate how much I moved to Portland, Oregon because
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: of the weather to escape the south and the East
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: Coast summers. Like, I really just don't different. I don't
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: tolerate the heat well in a way that I don't
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: think is normal. It is very autistic though, God damn,
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: it is everything I do autistic autism. Fuck you, I'm
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: officially angry at you for diagnosing me.
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: I just it's peer review diagnosis, all right, It's just
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: how the process works. But no, I mean it's heat tolerance.
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: Is I know so many people who build their lives
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: around their heat profile. You fit perfectly into a normal
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: curve with respect to that population, which is autistic. I'm
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: one of them.
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: Okay, I know, I know. It's just you know, i'd
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: like to you know, every time I say something about
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: me it's not normal, and you know it's autism, and
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: I go, oh, yeah, it does fit.
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: Yeah, you examine your whole life.
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: Yep, yep, yep, yep. Fuck Okay, yeah, can we talk
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: about this goddamn chapter because this is what I'm hyper
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: fixated on right now.
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: Thank you for listening to the Wheel of Time Spoilers podcast.
