- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle talk. Tabernacle talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle talk. We are back in our study in
- 0:18Isaiah and we are going to be in Isaiah chapters 15 and 16.
- 0:24Today we are back into God saying nations of the world, you
- 0:30are in trouble. And so the particular nation in
- 0:34view here in chapters 15 and 16 is the nation of Moab.
- 0:39So Moab is a super interesting story as you walk through
- 0:44scripture. You can look back at our
- 0:47Tabernacle Baptist Essex sermon podcast.
- 0:50I preached a message in Genesis 19 called the beginning of
- 0:57judgment or the beginning of God's judgment, something like
- 1:00that, and talked about the family origins of Moab.
- 1:05These are semi relatives to the Israelites through Abraham's
- 1:11nephew Lot, and he had two sons, Moab and Ammon.
- 1:17And so Moab was one that in Deuteronomy chapter 2, as Israel
- 1:22was going to enter the land, God made sure to tell the children
- 1:25of Israel, hey, for the descendants of Esau, for the
- 1:29descendants of Moab and the descendants of Ammon.
- 1:32Do not attack these people groups, do not like try to step
- 1:38foot on their land because I've given them these portions around
- 1:43Israel as part of their inheritance.
- 1:47So he says this land belongs to someone else.
- 1:48I will not give it to you guys, so don't try it.
- 1:53We are also told in Scripture that these would be people
- 1:56groups that Israel was not intended to intermarry with or
- 2:01at least not casually as a result of the fact that they
- 2:05worshipped false gods, kind of a hodgepodge of the different
- 2:09deities that were around the land of Canaan at that time.
- 2:14And then we can see in the story of Ruth the Moabitus that there
- 2:20was a woman who previously her family worshipped other gods,
- 2:24but as a family from Bethlehem, actually the the son of Rahab.
- 2:34No, I forgot about that that the sorry the family lineage and
- 2:38genealogy gets a little squirrely in there is Boaz is
- 2:42Rahab's son and then Boaz ends up marrying Ruth who is a
- 2:48Moabitus and then their great grandson or great great grandson
- 2:52is King David. So there you have like the
- 2:56chosen line of David is from half from this this people
- 3:02group, the land of Moab. So even as we read through a lot
- 3:06of these things of God's judgment, here it is as we've
- 3:09read against Israel, God's chosen people, they could
- 3:12experience judgment for their sin.
- 3:14Ditto with the southern Kingdom of Judah.
- 3:17And then now over to Moab, these people that had been previously
- 3:21protected by God in some aspects, but God has something
- 3:26to say against them. Verse #1A pronouncement
- 3:29concerning Moab. R in Moab is devastated.
- 3:33This would be kind of like a region, capital city area would
- 3:38would be the idea there. You can think of saying
- 3:41something like DC or the DMV in in our area of the world over
- 3:47here in Maryland, where it's like the capital but there's a
- 3:51little bit more land around it that is there says are.
- 3:55In Moab is devastated, destroyed in a night.
- 3:59Here in Moab is devastated, destroyed in a night.
- 4:02This would be another big city. Debon went up to its temple to
- 4:06weep at its high places. Moab wails on Nebo and at
- 4:10Mediba. Every head is shaved, every
- 4:13beard is cropped short. In its streets, they were
- 4:16sackcloth. On its rooftops and in its
- 4:18public squares, everyone wails, falling down and weeping.
- 4:23Heshbon and Ilaya cry out. Their voices are heard as far
- 4:28away as Jay has. Therefore the soldiers of Moab
- 4:31cry out, and they tremble. My heart cries out over Moab,
- 4:36whose fugitives flee as far as or to egg laugh.
- 4:40Oh my goodness, I do not often. As you guys know, I don't often
- 4:44have to straight up stop and sound out a name of a city, but
- 4:49this city's name is Eglath Shalashiya.
- 4:54Eglath Shalashiya is quite the mouthful.
- 4:58You can name your kid that if you are pregnant and looking for
- 5:01baby names. They go up the ascent of Luhith.
- 5:04Weeping. They raise a cry of destruction
- 5:07on the road to Hora Name. So here he's walking through,
- 5:12there's a bunch of cities, towns, areas within Moab, and
- 5:16he's saying, if you will, using kind of our parlance, from
- 5:20Juneau to Maine to Jacksonville to Los Angeles.
- 5:28There is crying, there's weeping, the soldiers are
- 5:31afraid. Everyone is dressed up in
- 5:34funeral clothing. That's the idea that we have
- 5:37here. Verse #6 The waters of Nimrim
- 5:40are desolate. The grass is withered, the
- 5:43foliage is gone, the vegetation is vanished.
- 5:46Think of an agricultural setting.
- 5:48There's no more ability to to grow food.
- 5:51There is hunger, there is famine and devastation here.
- 5:54Verse #7 So they carry their wealth and belongings over the
- 5:57Wadi of the willows. A Wadi would be a very shallow
- 6:02stream that would only have water at particular times of
- 6:06year when there was very heavy rain, and then it would kind of
- 6:09flood up and over, but it didn't normally have water.
- 6:12So that's kind of what's what's going on there.
- 6:16For their cry echoes throughout the territory of Moab.
- 6:19Their wailing reaches Eglaim, their wailing reaches bury them.
- 6:23The waters of Debone are full of blood.
- 6:26But I will bring on Debone even more than this, a lion for those
- 6:30who escaped from Moab and for the survivors in the land.
- 6:34So here, for Moab's wickedness, there would be a total
- 6:38devastation of the land, even as we know today, there's no
- 6:41country named Moab. And that is because its people
- 6:45were defeated and then assimilated long, long ago.
- 6:50Verse #16 or sorry, Chapter 16. Send lambs to the ruler of the
- 6:54land, from sailor in the desert to the mountain of daughter
- 6:57Zion, like a bird fleeing, forced from the nest.
- 7:01The daughters of Moab will be at the Fords of the Arnons.
- 7:04So hey, send a message to Jerusalem about Moab here.
- 7:09Give us counsel and make a decision.
- 7:11Shelter us at noonday with shade that is as dark as night.
- 7:14Hide the refugees. Do not betray the one who flees.
- 7:18Let my refugees stay with you. Be a refuge for Moab from the
- 7:22aggressor. When the oppressor is gone,
- 7:25destruction has ended and marauders have vanished from the
- 7:28land. A throne will be established in
- 7:31love and one will sit on it faithfully in the tent of David,
- 7:36the descendant of Moab, judging and pursuing what is right quick
- 7:41to execute justice. OK, so after all of the
- 7:44marauders, the invaders are gone, who could it be from the
- 7:49line of David? That is going to be one that
- 7:54reigns in love? Well, of course, this is Jesus,
- 7:57the son of David, verse number six.
- 8:00We've heard of Moab's pride. How very proud he is, His
- 8:04haughtiness, his pride, his arrogance and his empty
- 8:07boasting. Therefore, let Moab wail.
- 8:10Let every one of them wail for Moab.
- 8:12You who are completely devastated, mourn for the
- 8:15raising cakes of Kira Herseth, for Heshbon's terraced vineyards
- 8:20and the grapevines of Sibma have withered.
- 8:23The rulers of the nations have trampled its choice vines that
- 8:26reached as far as Jazer and spread to the desert.
- 8:29Their shoots spread out and reached the sea.
- 8:32So I join with Jazer to weep for the vines of Sibma.
- 8:36I drench Heshbon and Iliela with my tears.
- 8:39Triumphant shouts have fallen silent over your summer fruit
- 8:43and your harvest. Joy and rejoicing have been
- 8:46removed from the orchard. No one is singing or shouting
- 8:49for joy in the vineyards. No one tramples grapes in the
- 8:52wine presses. They've put an end to the
- 8:54shouting. Therefore I moan like the sound
- 8:57of a liar from Moab, as does my innermost being for Kier Harris.
- 9:01When Moab appears and tires himself out on the high place
- 9:05and comes to his sanctuary to pray, it will do him no good.
- 9:10So here, the incredible agricultural successes that the
- 9:18nation of Moab had, their wine presses, wine, Raisin cakes,
- 9:25grape vines, all of that comes to an end.
- 9:28And it didn't matter the high places, those places of worship
- 9:32that Moab had been trusting in, that was not where salvation
- 9:36would be found, if you will. The only true place for
- 9:39salvation or safety is found in Yahweh, in the Lord.
- 9:43Which is then what we read in verses kind of like 4:00 and
- 9:465:00 about them coming to the, you know, daughter Zion, the
- 9:53city of God, and looking forward to the one who's related to them
- 9:58from the line of David who would be able to reign injustice, that
- 10:03the oppressors and marauders would be long gone.
- 10:07Verse #13 This is the message that Yahweh previously announced
- 10:12about Moab. And now Yahweh says in three
- 10:15years as a hired worker counts years, Moab's splendor will
- 10:19become an object of contempt in spite of a very large
- 10:22population. And those who are left will be
- 10:25few and weak. God does not play favorites.
- 10:31He doesn't even play favorites here with quote UN quote family
- 10:36that when there is justice that needs to be done, God will bring
- 10:40it. So the only place of safety for
- 10:43you and I today is the same as it was in chapter 16.
- 10:48It is found in the one from the tent of David who reigns in
- 10:52love, who judges and pursues what is right and the one that
- 10:57is quick to execute justice. Let us call on Him for His mercy
- 11:02and His grace, and He will answer lovingly, compassionately
- 11:08and eagerly. May we not pursue evil because
- 11:11evil whether personally within families, within nation's evil
- 11:18and unrighteousness destroys a people and brings us low, but
- 11:22righteousness exalts the nation. So let's pursue God's way and
- 11:27find his blessing and his safety over and over again.
- 11:31Thanks for tuning in today and looking forward to I believe
- 11:34it's 17 or maybe portion of chapter 17 next episode.
- 11:40Thanks for tuning in. See you next time.
