- 0:08In our busy world, family time is frequently neglected.
- 0:13It is vital that we give attention to our families while we can,
- 0:17and it is especially important to give attention to what God says
- 0:22in his word about our homes. For the next few moments,
- 0:25let's join Scott Pauley as we open the scriptures and and find
- 0:29God's message for your family.
- 0:39God's Word is so rich, so real, so wonderful,
- 0:43and every time you go back to it, the Holy Spirit of
- 0:46God himself begins to make application to our lives right where
- 0:50we are. The last time we studied, we began walking through
- 0:54my favorite book of the Bible— full disclosure— My favorite book is
- 0:57the book of Philippians, but we've returned to it to discover how to have
- 1:01a joyful home. Would you like a home that overflows with
- 1:05the goodness and glory of God? That doesn't mean that every circumstance is
- 1:08always perfect. It doesn't mean that we are perfect, but it means we have found
- 1:13God's perfect joy. And like the psalmist, we can say our cup runneth over.
- 1:17Would you like a joyful home? We learn first of all from Philippians
- 1:21chapter 1, verse number 4 the very first occasion where the
- 1:24word joy is found in this book, that it is connected to praise and
- 1:28prayer. We must learn to thank God for our family members, and we must
- 1:32learn to pray for our family members. That's a good entry point, because when you
- 1:36learn to thank God for people and pray for people, it helps
- 1:39you keep a right attitude towards them. You can't stay angry, aggravated,
- 1:43and annoyed at people that you're praising God for and praying for.
- 1:47Prayer and praise will give you God's attitude towards other
- 1:52family members. But let's go further, walk on through the book of Philippians,
- 1:56come down in chapter 1 to verse number 18. The Bible says,
- 1:59what then, notwithstanding every way, whether in pretense
- 2:03or in truth, Christ is preached, and I therein
- 2:07do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.
- 2:11These are the next occasions where you find some form of the word joy in
- 2:14the book of Philippians, and Paul says he's rejoicing. Well,
- 2:17wonderful. He must be sitting on a beach somewhere just taking in the sunshine and
- 2:21loving life. Actually, he's sitting in a prison cell.
- 2:25He's sitting in jail. He is dealing with difficulty
- 2:30that most of us could never imagine, and yet in the midst of all
- 2:33of that, he's rejoicing. So here's a second principle: if
- 2:37you want a joyful home, not only must you learn to praise and pray,
- 2:41but secondly, you must root your joy in what really matters.
- 2:46Paul is not rooting his joy in circumstantial things,
- 2:50in physical or material things. No,
- 2:53those are all temporal. He's rooting his joy in the
- 2:56eternal. He's rooting his joy in the spiritual.
- 3:00And if you want God's joy to fill your home and your heart,
- 3:04if you want God's overflowing gladness with
- 3:08your family, then do not root your joy in things that come and go.
- 3:12In fact, everything in this world comes and goes except for Jesus.
- 3:16In verse number 12 of chapter 1, we learn not to root our
- 3:20joy in what happens to us, because in verse 12 he said lots of
- 3:24things that happen unto him that were not pleasant, but they had fallen out
- 3:28rather to the furtherance of the gospel. So don't allow things that happen
- 3:32to you to be the source of your joy. In verse 13,
- 3:35he teaches us that it should not be our location, where we are,
- 3:39that makes us happy. He is in bonds in verse 13,
- 3:43literally in prison. Some people think if they just have a geographical
- 3:47change, they'll be happy. No, because you're going to carry you with you to wherever
- 3:51you go. So a change of scenery is not the answer for
- 3:56spiritual difficulty. Then in verses 14 through 17,
- 3:59it's not what others do, because in verse 14, 15,
- 4:0316, and 17, Paul said some people are preaching Christ of
- 4:07contention, trying to add affliction to his bonds.
- 4:09They're, they're just trying to make it harder on him.
- 4:13So if his joy is rooted in people, he's going to be one disillusioned person.
- 4:17No, do not root your joy in what happens to you, where you are,
- 4:21or what others do. Root your joy in what really
- 4:24matters, and that's Jesus Christ and the fact the word
- 4:28of God is being given and the work of God is going forward and the
- 4:31will of God is going to be accomplished. You want a joyful
- 4:34home? Then learn to root your joy in the right things,
- 4:37specifically in the Lord Jesus. And then
- 4:41come down to verse 25 and 26 of chapter 1. Here's another.
- 4:44The Bible says, in having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue
- 4:48with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith,
- 4:52that your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me
- 4:56by my coming to you again. Did you notice that the
- 5:00joy here is connected with the good of
- 5:03others instead of ourself? Paul's in prison,
- 5:08but his joy, his rejoicing, is connected to their
- 5:11joy, to their faith growing, to them being helped. So here's
- 5:16a great principle: if you want a joyful home, be more concerned with the
- 5:19other person's joy than with your own joy. Do you
- 5:23know what is the greatest joy killer in the world?
- 5:28Selfishness. Self crops its ugly head up all the time and
- 5:33seeks its own, consumes. That self-life
- 5:37is the most miserable life of all. I was thinking
- 5:41about this earlier. Would you like to have a good marriage? A good marriage
- 5:45is the union of 2 dead people. You got to be dead to self.
- 5:49Both of you have to be dead to self. It's It's not about what
- 5:52I can get. It is about what I can give. In the words
- 5:56of another verse, in honor preferring one another. And so make your
- 6:01goal, your desire, that others would know the joy of the Lord,
- 6:05that others would have a glad heart. And in that, you will find great
- 6:09gladness and greater joy. And then let me give you one more.
- 6:13If you want a joyful home, not only must you praise and pray,
- 6:17Not only must you root your joy in what really matters, not only must
- 6:21you be more concerned with the other person's joy than your own, but then number
- 6:244, you must learn the joy of true oneness.
- 6:28We've come now to chapter 2. Listen to chapter 2 beginning in verse 1.
- 6:32If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love,
- 6:36if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,
- 6:40fulfill ye my joy that ye be like-minded Having
- 6:44the same love, being of one accord, of one
- 6:47mind. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory,
- 6:51but in lowliness of mind. Let each esteem other better
- 6:55than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on
- 6:59the things of others. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ
- 7:03Jesus. This is really just an extension of what we said a moment ago,
- 7:06being more concerned with another person's joy than your own. But listen to
- 7:10the connection here of joy and oneness. He said,
- 7:13I want you like-minded, one accord, one mind.
- 7:17Every good thing God ever does in a church comes when God's
- 7:22people get in one accord. You find that all through the book of Acts and
- 7:25all through history. Well, every good thing that God does in a home happens when
- 7:29we learn the joy of real oneness.
- 7:32And God describes here when he describes the mind of Christ
- 7:36in Philippians 2 and defines for us what this oneness
- 7:40looks like. It looks like humility. It looks like sacrifice.
- 7:44It looks like obedience. You see, joy is not
- 7:47rooted in how you feel. It's rooted in how you think.
- 7:51That's why he says, let this mind be in you which was also
- 7:55in Christ Jesus. Somebody said, how do you get everybody to think the same way?
- 7:58You don't. The answer is you never get everybody to agree on everything.
- 8:03So here's what you have to do if you want oneness. Oneness is not all
- 8:06of us thinking exactly alike all the time or
- 8:10agreeing on everything. Oneness rather is us learning the mind
- 8:14of Christ and learning to agree with him.
- 8:17Look, oneness is not me getting my way or you getting your way.
- 8:21Oneness is Christ getting his way. We may not always
- 8:25agree on everything. But we can all agree on this: we need Jesus.
- 8:29We want the Lord to have his rightful place in our life, and we want
- 8:32to begin to think like he thinks. This is what oneness means
- 8:36in a home. Would you pray today that instead of being fragmented and divided,
- 8:41God would make you of one mind and of one accord?
- 8:45You know, it's not just families that split up, marriages that
- 8:49split up, that deal with division. Many people live under the same roof,
- 8:53but they live with division all the time. If you want a joyful home,
- 8:57learn the secret of oneness with one another
- 9:01by learning the secret of oneness with Jesus Christ.
- 9:05My prayer for you, dear friend, today is that these principles from Philippians
