Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. We're at the end of another
- 0:20week, and today we are going into Psalm 132, Psalm 132, and
- 0:26after several psalms that have all been about the various
- 0:32aspects of life, like really generally this particular Psalm
- 0:37talks specifically about David. And we're going to see the
- 0:43phrase the anointed one, or if you will, the Messiah that shows
- 0:48up multiple times within this Psalm.
- 0:52And so we're going to learn some things about Jesus, about God's
- 0:55ultimate plan for our world, and what we will enter into what the
- 1:01Kingdom of God looks like. And so I think it'll be a great
- 1:04encouragement to us. If you are somewhat new to
- 1:08Christianity or some of the stories in the Bible, you're
- 1:11going to hear some more stories, some new stories that we haven't
- 1:15even gone over yet in Tabernacle Talk.
- 1:17And so I'm looking forward to this time together.
- 1:20Let's read through a beginning in verse #1 this is the either
- 1:27second to last, no third to last one of the song of a sense.
- 1:33So this was something as people were going to Jerusalem to
- 1:37worship in the Temple, they would sing about this Psalm that
- 1:42talks about why there is a temple there in Jerusalem.
- 1:46There was not always a temple in Jerusalem.
- 1:50That was something that began with David finding the location
- 1:54for it, and he purchased the property that the temple would
- 1:58go on. And then his son Solomon was the
- 2:01one that actually built the temple.
- 2:04So let's begin reading in verse #1 I think I'm going to read
- 2:08through and then give the stories and then a couple of
- 2:12things that we need to know for our lives today.
- 2:14Verse #1 Yahweh. Remember David and all the
- 2:18hardships he endured and how he swore an oath to Yahweh, making
- 2:23a vow to the mighty one of Jacob.
- 2:26This was the vow that David made.
- 2:27I will not enter my house or get into my bed.
- 2:31I will not allow my eyes to sleep or my eyelids to find
- 2:34slumber until I find a place for Yahweh, A dwelling for the
- 2:39mighty one of Jacob. We heard of the ark in Efratha.
- 2:44That's Bethlehem. We found it in the fields of
- 2:48jar. That is by.
- 2:52I'm going to get this pronunciation wrong and I
- 2:54apologize. Kiriathira.
- 2:57No, actually, that was a little easier than I thought.
- 2:59We heard of the ark in Nephrotha.
- 3:01We found it in the fields of Kiryath Jahim.
- 3:04Let's go to his dwelling place. Let's worship at his footstool.
- 3:08Rise up, Yahweh. Come to your resting place, you
- 3:12and your powerful ark. May your priests be clothed with
- 3:16righteousness, and may your faithful people shout for joy.
- 3:20For the sake of your servant David, do not reject your
- 3:24anointed one. That's the Hebrew word Messiah
- 3:28verse 11. You always swore an oath to
- 3:30David, a promise he will not abandon.
- 3:33I will set one of your offspring on your throne.
- 3:37If your sons keep my covenant and my decrees that I will teach
- 3:40them, their sons will also sit on your throne forever.
- 3:45For Yahweh has chosen Zion. He has desired it for his home.
- 3:50This is my resting place forever.
- 3:52I will make my home here because I have desired it.
- 3:55I will abundantly bless its food.
- 3:57I will satisfy its needy with bread.
- 4:00I will clothe its priests with salvation.
- 4:03And its people, its faithful people, will shout for joy
- 4:06there. I will make a horn grow for
- 4:09David. I've prepared a lamp for my
- 4:12anointed 1 Messiah. I will clothe his enemies with
- 4:15shame. But the crown he wears will be
- 4:19glorious. All right, If you, as I
- 4:23mentioned at the beginning, if you're new to the Bible, you're
- 4:25like, OK, what in the world is going on here?
- 4:28So couple of things that we need to remember #1 God does not need
- 4:36any physical location here on earth to be worshipped.
- 4:40He is omnipresent, as we talked a little bit about last episode,
- 4:45and so he is anywhere that he desires to be, as opposed to the
- 4:52idols and false gods that were worshipped all across the
- 4:56ancient Near East. They those people always thought
- 5:00that the gods needed a container in order for their greatest
- 5:06powers to be there. There needed to be a
- 5:10representative that could receive praise and worship and
- 5:15offerings and all of that. And so they would build out of,
- 5:19you know, gold or silver or bronze or out of things like
- 5:23stone or wood. They would build idols that in
- 5:28their mind there was an inhabitation of that physical
- 5:33thing by the spirit of whatever God that they were attempting to
- 5:37worship. And it was a way that a God
- 5:39could receive worship or food or different things.
- 5:44For that God was totally different.
- 5:47And so as He is creating His people Israel, both in Exodus,
- 5:53Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy, He does not tell
- 5:57them that there needs to be a physical idol created that he
- 6:02would inhabit. Now the Israelites foolishly
- 6:06tried to make an idol that the spirit of Yahweh would inhabit
- 6:11as they made the golden calf when Moses was on Mount Sinai
- 6:16for those 40 days. And so Israel misunderstood.
- 6:22They thought God was like the other gods, and He just
- 6:24emphatically was not. So God actually had them make
- 6:30the Tabernacle, and we talked about that at length when we
- 6:34went through Leviticus. I think it was about 22 or so
- 6:38episodes that we walked through that might have been a little
- 6:41more than that. If you have any questions, go
- 6:43back there. We talked about the priests.
- 6:45We talked about worship, what made people ceremonially
- 6:50unclean. We talked about what made people
- 6:53morally unclean and the difference between those.
- 6:57And so all of that came into play.
- 6:59But the Tabernacle was a movable tent that was an actual physical
- 7:06reminder of God's presence with the children of Israel.
- 7:11It was a place that was modeled after God's throne room in
- 7:17heaven. That's what God tells Moses.
- 7:19He says, all right, I've shown you what my throne room looks
- 7:23like. And now I want you to make a, a
- 7:28tent that you will put together and then tear down, you know,
- 7:32walk for a day and then you'll set it back down and you'll set
- 7:38it up. So it, it seems like such an
- 7:42endeavor to me as I think about that, that you are both at the
- 7:46same time going. I am carrying this reminder of
- 7:50God's presence and His Holiness and his throne room with me
- 7:53wherever I am going. And it stayed with the children
- 7:58of Israel as they went through their wilderness wanderings.
- 8:00And then it finally set up shop when they came into the land of
- 8:05Canaan. And so you can read about that
- 8:07both in Joshua and then in Judges, but then a lot in First
- 8:12Samuel, which I know that I will get to at some point in
- 8:17Tabernacle talk. I don't know the when of that
- 8:19yet. So it was set up shop in Israel,
- 8:24and one of the most important things that was there, in
- 8:26addition to the regular sacrifices that people would
- 8:30make, all of the tithes and offerings that were brought to
- 8:35the Lord and to the Levites and the priests, the Day of
- 8:39Atonement ritual, hear all of the feasts that everyone was
- 8:44coming to worship the Lord during the time of David, He
- 8:48moved that worship over to Jerusalem, but it was not
- 8:52originally there. And so people would come to the
- 8:56Tabernacle for all of these events.
- 9:01Unfortunately, in the book of First Samuel we read that there
- 9:05was fighting with the Philistines that when Israel
- 9:08came into the land, they did. The children of Israel did not
- 9:13choose to obey the Lord and either defeat or drive out all
- 9:20of the Philistines from the land they chose.
- 9:23No, we're we're just going to be in the same place as them, which
- 9:26caused them countless heartaches over the course of centuries
- 9:31because they did not move them out.
- 9:34Now, as I've mentioned many times on here before, any of the
- 9:40people of the land that wanted to be a part of what God was
- 9:44doing of worshipping the Lord, of being part of this new people
- 9:48of God, They were more than welcome to.
- 9:51And I'm so grateful that God chooses even people that quote,
- 9:56UN quote, aren't part of the the chosen group that he had, you
- 10:01know, Rahab the harlot that he had the Gibeonites, that he had
- 10:05so many others that became a part of his family through their
- 10:10faith and belief in him. But for those that wanted to
- 10:14persist in evil and wrong and just horrible actions that you
- 10:20can read all about that in in Judges that there was constant
- 10:25oppression of the Israelite people through the Philistines
- 10:30invading and doing great harm during one of these times of
- 10:35battle during the days of the Judges, the people thought,
- 10:39well, the ark of the covenant, this is where God lives, which
- 10:43was not true. Like God is wherever he wants to
- 10:47be. He's not contained in the ark of
- 10:50the covenant like Bale would be contained in some sort of an
- 10:54idol. And so they say if we bring the
- 10:57ark of the covenant, then we will win the battle.
- 11:00And so they bring out the ark of the covenant.
- 11:02It really encourages Israel for a second, but the Philistines
- 11:07freak out. They go, man, their God has now
- 11:09come into the camp. And so they're like, OK, well, I
- 11:13guess we're pretty much just dead.
- 11:14And so they go full, if you will, berserker mode.
- 11:18And they actually defeat Israel and they capture the Ark of the
- 11:21Covenant and they bring it back into Philistine territory.
- 11:25Well, then God brings judgment on to the Philistines.
- 11:29It's great story I absolutely don't have time to tell right
- 11:32now. So the Philistines send the Ark
- 11:35of the Covenant back. Well, it doesn't actually get
- 11:38back to the Tabernacle. It instead goes to this little
- 11:43town of Kiryathjirim. So David about a generation
- 11:48later goes I I have this great palace.
- 11:54I have this place where I am living, but the, you know, quote
- 12:01UN quote, the House of God lives in tents.
- 12:04He's just in this Tabernacle. I want to give God a permanent
- 12:08place where he can be worshipped.
- 12:11That's, you know, as nice as what I'm enjoying right now.
- 12:15And so he tells the prophet Nathan about this.
- 12:18The prophet Nathan's like, awesome, that's great, do it.
- 12:21And then God has to tell Nathan, no, no, no, no, no.
- 12:23David has, you know, he's spilled too much blood.
- 12:28This is not the person that I have to build the temple.
- 12:33He doesn't say David is unworthy and his son Solomon is worthy,
- 12:39but God says there is a separate role that is designed here, that
- 12:46David's goal, David's role was king and warrior.
- 12:50Solomon's role is going to be that he builds this temple.
- 12:55Now we know Solomon's sins in ways that David never did and
- 13:03even took some of David's sins that he committed to the next
- 13:07level. I think in particular of his
- 13:09multiplying of wives as we read about in Scripture.
- 13:14So as this is occurring, David goes, all right, well, God said
- 13:18I can't build the temple, but he didn't say that I can't amass
- 13:23the materials so that it's as easy as possible for my son to
- 13:28build the temple. And so I want to do my part in
- 13:30my generation for what I believe God will do in the next
- 13:34generation. And what a thought that that is
- 13:37that even though David was told no by God, that David didn't
- 13:41say, well, I'm going to be, you know, really heard about this,
- 13:45he says and said, no, I'm going to make it so that God's will in
- 13:48the next generation is able to be accomplished.
- 13:51So I'm going to acquit the next generation with what they need.
- 13:55Let the reader understand. So David, part of what he does
- 13:59though, is he has the Ark of the Covenant taken from that random
- 14:03little town of Kiriathjirim, and he brings it to Jerusalem.
- 14:09And so that then meant that a lot of the worship and different
- 14:13things would now take place there in the capital city of
- 14:17Israel. So with that being said, now I
- 14:22have to take it back to Psalm 132.
- 14:24Now you've heard the story, and I'm going to very, very quickly
- 14:27just have a couple of highlights for us.
- 14:29There's these 4 sections of the Psalms of this Psalm and I'm
- 14:33going to give maybe just one application for us as we think
- 14:38about this Psalm. So in the first section, he
- 14:41says, God, remember David, everything difficult that he
- 14:45endured in his life and how he made a promise to go.
- 14:49I'm, I am not going to live in comfort and joy myself until I
- 14:55find a place for God. Can I ask you for your life?
- 15:02Are you content with your life being Kush?
- 15:05Are you content with enjoying all the comfort and all of the
- 15:10financial security in your own life?
- 15:12Well, how is your local church doing?
- 15:15Is there something that they would want to accomplish that
- 15:20maybe through your generosity, through your sacrificing, that
- 15:24you might be able to make something amazing happen for the
- 15:29Lord through you stepping out of faith and going, I will
- 15:32experience discomfort and so that God's work gets
- 15:38accomplished. Or maybe there's a ministry at
- 15:41your church that needs someone to volunteer in it, that needs
- 15:45someone to lead, and you might be the person that God has that
- 15:50you would step in. Will you choose?
- 15:53I'm going to pursue God with all of my heart.
- 15:57I'm going to give Him of the best of me so that His will gets
- 16:03accomplished. I don't know what that is for
- 16:05every person, but I want to encourage you here, David said.
- 16:09I'm not resting until God's work, God's place gets
- 16:13accomplished. And so I know for our little
- 16:16church, we've got things we're praying for.
- 16:18We've got ministry areas that need people to, to lead and to
- 16:22serve in a big way. If you are a part of Tabernacle
- 16:26and you're like, OK, well, I'm, I'm convinced Pastor Brian, what
- 16:29do I need to do? Let me know.
- 16:31Like send me Adm, send me a text or a call.
- 16:34I would love to talk with you about some things that we're
- 16:37praying for even as a church, but I want to encourage you with
- 16:40that. That's verses kind of one
- 16:42through 5. The section there, verses 6
- 16:44through 10. He says we've heard of the ark
- 16:48in that area. We found it in the fields.
- 16:52Let's go to God's dwelling place.
- 16:55Let's worship at his footstool. You have the ark is kind of a
- 16:58picture of the sorry, the Ark of the Covenant is a picture of the
- 17:03footstool of God, like of his throne.
- 17:07There's not an image and idol of Yahweh sitting on it, but it's
- 17:13designed kind of like a throne, his footstool.
- 17:16So here there's this. Let's worship at the feet of
- 17:18God. And then verse 8, rise up
- 17:20Yahweh, come to your resting place, you and your powerful
- 17:24ark. May your priest be clothed with
- 17:25righteousness. If we're going to worship you,
- 17:27we need to be right with you, says, and may your faithful
- 17:30people shout for joy. Worship of the Lord involves a
- 17:34joy and a happiness. About worshipping, He says, for
- 17:38the sake of your servant David, do not reject your anointed one.
- 17:42This is Messiah, this would be the King.
- 17:44Can I encourage you be passionate and joyful about
- 17:49worshipping the Lord, about gathering with God's people to
- 17:51learn from the word of God, to bring praise to Him, to bring
- 17:54him, yes, even your money, but to bring Him your life first and
- 17:59foremost. May we be clothed with
- 18:01righteousness as those that are made a Kingdom of priests to our
- 18:06God, with Jesus Himself as our great High Priest.
- 18:10May we be clothed with righteousness and be happy about
- 18:14our worship of the Lord. Then verses 11 and 12, you
- 18:19always swore an oath to David, a promise he will not abandon.
- 18:23I'll set one of your offspring on your throne.
- 18:25If your sons keep my covenant and my decrees that I will teach
- 18:28them, their sons will also sit on your throne forever.
- 18:31There was only one of David's offspring who kept the covenant
- 18:35of God and every decree that the Father taught him, and that is
- 18:39Jesus Christ. And so Jesus is the one that is
- 18:42the fulfillment of Psalm 130 to that He is the one that sits on
- 18:46the throne forever. And we are his children.
- 18:49He is our as we sing often at Christmas.
- 18:51He is the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.
- 18:54And so we get to worship, we get to enjoy the Kingdom brought in
- 18:59by this physical descendant of David, Jesus Christ, who was the
- 19:03perfect one, who obeyed everything that the Father
- 19:07commanded. And then lastly, in verses 13
- 19:11through 18, Yahweh has chosen Zion.
- 19:14He has desired it for his home. It's why the great city that's
- 19:17coming from heaven to earth one day is called the New Jerusalem,
- 19:22because that is where God has selected that his home will be
- 19:26forever. He says, this is my resting
- 19:28place forever. I will make my home here because
- 19:30I have desired it. You might wonder what's so
- 19:33special about Jerusalem that there has been millennia of
- 19:37fighting over this one piece of land.
- 19:39And the answer is it is because God has desired it for himself.
- 19:43Now, God will not get Jerusalem because the nation of Israel
- 19:49that's currently there does anything.
- 19:51God is not going to get Jerusalem because the USA or the
- 19:54UK or because you know, Egypt or someone does anything.
- 19:59The only reason that God gets Jerusalem is because He is the
- 20:02conquering king and He is the one that will make His home
- 20:06there. Right now He is not worshipped
- 20:09by the people that are there, whether Jews or Muslims that are
- 20:13often there. I know we also have some
- 20:14Christian brothers and sisters that are there, but God is not.
- 20:18Preeminent, they are worshipped in Jerusalem right now.
- 20:20What is there is not the ultimate fulfillment.
- 20:23But when God returns, then there will be ultimate fulfillment
- 20:27there. God says I will abundantly bless
- 20:29its food. I will satisfy its needy with
- 20:32bread. God loves to feed those that are
- 20:34disenfranchised and poor and hungry and in need.
- 20:37May we have that same desire as well.
- 20:40He says I will clothe its priest with salvation and it's faithful
- 20:44people will shout for joy there. I will make a horn grow for
- 20:49David. That is strength.
- 20:50There is might, specifically the person of the Messiah that Jesus
- 20:55is there. He says I've prepared a lamp
- 20:57like the light that is in the Tabernacle.
- 21:01That's a constant reminder of God's presence, that candle
- 21:04that's always lit. And so here God's presence is
- 21:08always with the Messiah that his spirit is always with Jesus.
- 21:13Verse 18 I will clothe his enemies with shame, but the
- 21:16crown he wears will be glorious. How true that is.
- 21:20But I also think of the shameful crown of thorns that Jesus wore.
- 21:25He was shamed so that we could experience glory.
- 21:28And what an amazing Savior that Jesus is, that he wore the crown
- 21:32of shame so that we would be recipients of the crowns that
- 21:39God gives to us, that then we cast at his feet to go, no, we
- 21:42don't deserve these glorious crowns made by God himself.
- 21:46Jesus is the only one that is worthy.
- 21:49Well, I love this Psalm. I hope that Psalm 132 was an
- 21:53encouragement to you today and looking forward to Psalm 133
- 21:56next time. Thanks for tuning in.
