- 0:04Speaker 1: Smell us now, lady, welcome to meet tadcast.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Welcome to the June twelfth episode of Meat Eater Radio Live.
- 0:30Speaker 2: It's eleven am Mountain time here in Bozeman. That's one
- 0:34Speaker 2: pm on the outer banks of North Carolina, where my
- 0:36Speaker 2: family is currently enjoying vacation without me. Yep, they're having
- 0:41Speaker 2: fun on the beach. I'm your host, Brody Henderson. I'm
- 0:45Speaker 2: joined today by Seth Morris and Corey Calkins. Today it's
- 0:50Speaker 2: almost Father's Day, man, so we're gonna share some hunting
- 0:54Speaker 2: stories about our dads. That'll be fun. We're going to
- 0:58Speaker 2: talk to fishing guy Josh Miller, who tried to get
- 1:00Speaker 2: on the show a couple of weeks ago. I think
- 1:03Speaker 2: about his first mate rider right here, the turkey. I
- 1:08Speaker 2: don't know what that turkey's name is. We'll figure that
- 1:10Speaker 2: part out. And since we're running the voting right now
- 1:15Speaker 2: for our twenty twenty six Fucked Up Old Hunting Trucks calendar,
- 1:19Speaker 2: we're going to talk about some bad situations we've gotten
- 1:22Speaker 2: into in our hunting trucks. And on top of that,
- 1:26Speaker 2: we're going to interview an actual four wheel drive truck
- 1:29Speaker 2: driving expert, someone who teaches people how to drive four
- 1:33Speaker 2: wheel drive trucks. I'm not sure what his credentials are,
- 1:36Speaker 2: but he's a good guy, so we'll figure that part
- 1:38Speaker 2: out too. Yeah, that's what we've got for. It should
- 1:43Speaker 2: be a good show. What's up? How's it going, Fellas? Oh?
- 1:47Speaker 3: Going good? Yeah, it's going good. Yeah.
- 1:50Speaker 4: What have you been up to?
- 1:51Speaker 3: I just got back from Interior, Alaska on the bear
- 1:54Speaker 3: hunt with a lot of bear, a lot of bear hunting. Yeah.
- 2:00Speaker 3: That's my second Alaska bear hunt of the year, right,
- 2:03Speaker 3: you got a Yeah, one in southeast and one in interior.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Much different style of hunting for those like could Yeah,
- 2:12Speaker 2: two different planets basically, yep. But yeah it was good cool, Yeah,
- 2:18Speaker 2: watching some bears die and saw some beautiful country. Sweet.
- 2:21Speaker 5: See any other critters up there?
- 2:23Speaker 3: Yeah? So saw wolves, grizzly bears, caribou, moose, doll, sheep, wow,
- 2:30Speaker 3: a porcupine, a marmot and I think.
- 2:35Speaker 4: That's it man.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Yeah, Corey, what have you been doing working man?
- 2:41Speaker 5: Yeah, lots of work and I've been fly fishing a
- 2:43Speaker 5: lot more this year. I was a well, I was
- 2:46Speaker 5: a guide for fifteen years and when I retired from guiding,
- 2:50Speaker 5: started this job. I didn't really want to do it anywhere.
- 2:53Speaker 5: I kind of lost the dress.
- 2:54Speaker 2: The same thing happened to me after whatever eighteen twenty
- 2:58Speaker 2: years a guide and I just I just lost the
- 3:00Speaker 2: drive to go fish on my own.
- 3:02Speaker 3: That's what everyone says. I think the same thing happened
- 3:04Speaker 3: with the honest too.
- 3:05Speaker 5: Oh yeah, maybe, but it's but it's back, man. This year,
- 3:08Speaker 5: I've been fishing quite a bit.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Cool.
- 3:10Speaker 5: Fishing is good right now at the moment. It seems
- 3:12Speaker 5: like it's gonna dry up come late summer. But fish
- 3:15Speaker 5: it now and going out, meeting up with my old
- 3:17Speaker 5: man this weekend. Go fish the Missouri.
- 3:19Speaker 2: So nice with everyone else in the state of Montana.
- 3:22Speaker 5: Yeah, hopefully they're going somewhere else.
- 3:26Speaker 2: I don't know, dude. That river is always busy, but
- 3:29Speaker 2: there's so many trout it doesn't matter exactly.
- 3:31Speaker 5: And you just kind of if everybody's fishing the right bank,
- 3:35Speaker 5: fish the left bank, or the middle, well wherever the
- 3:38Speaker 5: fisher bikeing. Yeah, there's a lot of fish forer a
- 3:39Speaker 5: mile in there.
- 3:40Speaker 2: So how about you, oh man gardening. My family's out
- 3:45Speaker 2: of town, you know, like when your family goes out
- 3:48Speaker 2: of town, you're like, oh god, it's gonna be great.
- 3:49Speaker 2: I'm gonna have this house to myself. It's gonna be quiet.
- 3:52Speaker 2: I'll get stuff done. But then they leave and you're like, God,
- 3:56Speaker 2: I miss them. I'm bored. I'm getting some stuff done,
- 3:59Speaker 2: but I do miss him. Well, we'll start hitting the
- 4:02Speaker 2: fishing hard after the boys get back here this weekend. Nice. Yeah, Phil,
- 4:08Speaker 2: we got we got old Danny Bolton on the line.
- 4:10Speaker 4: Danny's standby, I yes.
- 4:12Speaker 5: Uh.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Well, let's jump right in to our first guest, Danny Bolton.
- 4:17Speaker 2: You guys probably seen him on the Mediator television show.
- 4:20Speaker 2: He's done some stuff with cal To. He's been a
- 4:24Speaker 2: friend of Mediator for several years. If you don't know him,
- 4:27Speaker 2: Danny Haile's from Hawaii. He spends a lot of his
- 4:30Speaker 2: time shooting arrows into feral pigs and sheep, and he
- 4:35Speaker 2: spends a lot of time hol in tuna and wahou
- 4:37Speaker 2: into the boat. But we've got him on the show
- 4:40Speaker 2: today to talk about his job training folks how to
- 4:44Speaker 2: drive four wheel drive rigs, and we're gonna pick his
- 4:46Speaker 2: brain about what not to do when you're off road
- 4:49Speaker 2: in your truck around, especially during hunting season. So we
- 4:53Speaker 2: got him up here there he is, Danny. How's it going, man,
- 4:57Speaker 2: that's good.
- 4:58Speaker 6: How are you guys?
- 4:59Speaker 3: Great? Great?
- 5:01Speaker 2: What have you been up too lately?
- 5:04Speaker 6: Did hey did a little storm chasing just recently, flew
- 5:07Speaker 6: out to Kansas, drove all over the country, well not
- 5:11Speaker 6: all over the country, but all over like through storm zones,
- 5:14Speaker 6: and actually got to see my first tornado.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Oh nice, dude, that's awesome.
- 5:18Speaker 2: You don't get too many of those in WAYI huh.
- 5:20Speaker 6: No, definitely don't get too many. I've seen like one
- 5:23Speaker 6: little baby water spout one time, but not a full tornado.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Nice. Did you have a special truck, like one of
- 5:30Speaker 2: those big storm chasing trucks you were using for that?
- 5:34Speaker 6: Or yeah, dude, you wouldn't believe it. My my friend
- 5:36Speaker 6: Ricky is like that that they live for it. And
- 5:39Speaker 6: he's got this big old orange truck, all the lights underglow,
- 5:44Speaker 6: all the you know, like pretty much typical storm chasing thing,
- 5:47Speaker 6: all kinds of antennas coming off of it. So got
- 5:51Speaker 6: to do that with him, which was super fun. And then, dude,
- 5:55Speaker 6: it's just like the movies, like pull to a gas station.
- 5:58Speaker 6: There's like thirty other storm chasers all amp for the
- 6:00Speaker 6: storm coming in and some crazy rigs I talk about
- 6:05Speaker 6: talking about messed up old trucks, dude. Yeah, there were
- 6:07Speaker 6: some crazy stuff there with like all kinds of like
- 6:10Speaker 6: metal welded to it and you know, just like mad
- 6:14Speaker 6: math stuff.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Yeah, that's pretty funny. That's cool.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Okay, Danny, Like we've we've done some four wheel drive
- 6:20Speaker 2: stuff with you in the past a little bit anyway,
- 6:23Speaker 2: But give us a quick rundown of like your driving
- 6:26Speaker 2: instruction job and how you got into it.
- 6:30Speaker 6: Yeah, I'll just give you a quick rundown. I guess
- 6:33Speaker 6: I just grew up just off road all the time,
- 6:36Speaker 6: started to play on quads and dirt bikes, and then
- 6:40Speaker 6: just always had kind of beat up old trucks that
- 6:44Speaker 6: we could ramble around in, and even before I had
- 6:47Speaker 6: my driver's license. And then I have two older cousins
- 6:50Speaker 6: that I rode dirt bikes with and they had enough
- 6:53Speaker 6: money and had jobs, so they were like building trucks.
- 6:55Speaker 6: So then started building trucks and that got us into
- 6:58Speaker 6: offered racing. When I moved out of Hawaii after high school,
- 7:02Speaker 6: started racing desert stuff, and that's kind of what got
- 7:05Speaker 6: me into like the major side of off road and
- 7:09Speaker 6: offered racing and then my friend does all the training.
- 7:13Speaker 6: So I've actually partnered with him now and we're business
- 7:16Speaker 6: together to train a bunch of people, mainly military, So
- 7:21Speaker 6: mainly military to basically how to drive off road and
- 7:25Speaker 6: then if the thing breaks, how to fix it if
- 7:27Speaker 6: you get stuck, how to get unstuck. All the little
- 7:31Speaker 6: things that you know you find out there in the
- 7:35Speaker 6: desert or wherever you are, what's going to break it,
- 7:38Speaker 6: similar to what would break when you're hunting, and just
- 7:41Speaker 6: how to fix it. Just all those little little secrets
- 7:44Speaker 6: you know.
- 7:47Speaker 2: I would imagine based on my own experience getting stuck
- 7:51Speaker 2: and whatnot, that one of the biggest mistakes people make
- 7:55Speaker 2: when they're driving around a rough country is just like
- 7:58Speaker 2: not turning around when they should, not recognizing like stopping
- 8:02Speaker 2: is the best thing to do, and then you'll just
- 8:04Speaker 2: avoid getting yourself in a real bad situation. But what
- 8:08Speaker 2: are like some of the main most common mistakes people
- 8:12Speaker 2: make when they're driving in bad conditions like washed out roads, snow, mud,
- 8:16Speaker 2: whatever it might be.
- 8:20Speaker 6: Yeah, I think you kind of hit the nail on
- 8:22Speaker 6: the head. Is just like your brain right, like be
- 8:25Speaker 6: grow self aware of where you're at and you know,
- 8:29Speaker 6: I've gone down stuff that I couldn't get back up
- 8:32Speaker 6: and ended up being a dead end and it was
- 8:34Speaker 6: a mission. We did get back up, but like just
- 8:38Speaker 6: knowing your situation, knowing your gear, and I would say
- 8:42Speaker 6: the most common things, and most people can probably relate
- 8:46Speaker 6: to this is most likely flat tires and then just
- 8:50Speaker 6: getting stuck. I would say, you know, out of all
- 8:53Speaker 6: the crazy fixes that I've done out in the field,
- 8:55Speaker 6: broken assholes, change transmission, all these crazy things, getting stuck
- 9:01Speaker 6: and just flat tires are probably the two most common things.
- 9:04Speaker 6: And you need to be able to fix your vehicle
- 9:07Speaker 6: or get it on stuffed. So you know, just having
- 9:10Speaker 6: a shovel and then checking your equipment before you go,
- 9:14Speaker 6: checking your spare tire makes your ass air in it.
- 9:17Speaker 6: Make sure it's the correct spare. I've I've had a
- 9:20Speaker 6: truck where I got a flat and we pull out
- 9:22Speaker 6: the spare and it was the wrong lug nut pattern.
- 9:25Speaker 6: So make sure your jack is working.
- 9:28Speaker 2: YEA, yeah, I was gonna ask you, like, what, like,
- 9:36Speaker 2: what are the things you like have to have in
- 9:38Speaker 2: your truck when you're like anytime you're gonna be leaving
- 9:42Speaker 2: the pavement, Like, what thing what's on your list?
- 9:44Speaker 3: Is stuff?
- 9:45Speaker 2: Everyone should have in their in their truck.
- 9:48Speaker 6: You got to keep it real simple without sending people
- 9:50Speaker 6: way down the rabbit hole. But I would have make
- 9:54Speaker 6: sure your jack is working. Most cars and trucks come
- 9:57Speaker 6: with a jack stock, so that that's fine. Just make
- 10:00Speaker 6: sure you have your jack and all the little pieces
- 10:04Speaker 6: you need to use your jack, and then also your
- 10:06Speaker 6: spare tire. Make sure you have a spare tire and
- 10:09Speaker 6: a lugnut ranch and then all the little pieces you
- 10:12Speaker 6: need to get your spare down to. Usually it's the
- 10:14Speaker 6: same thing that you use for your jack. And then
- 10:18Speaker 6: I would say a shovel. If you're going off road,
- 10:21Speaker 6: like to go camp or go hunt or something, just
- 10:25Speaker 6: bring a shovel. And then a little toe rope like
- 10:29Speaker 6: a toe strap would be amazing. But to keep it
- 10:32Speaker 6: very simple, I would say, out of those things, you
- 10:35Speaker 6: can get yourself out of a lot of trouble.
- 10:37Speaker 2: Yeah, what about those you know those plastic things you
- 10:42Speaker 2: lay down on the ground attraction board? Do you use
- 10:44Speaker 2: those at all?
- 10:46Speaker 3: Very rarely?
- 10:48Speaker 6: They come in handy and if you're planning on getting
- 10:51Speaker 6: stuck a lot, they're cool to have, But honestly, like
- 10:55Speaker 6: if you're trying to keep it simple. You don't really need.
- 10:58Speaker 3: It, Like, so.
- 11:04Speaker 4: Hickup here, I think we actually lost connection here and.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Oh there he is. We lost you there for like
- 11:14Speaker 2: a little less than a minute. So I don't know.
- 11:17Speaker 6: Yeah, so I would say they just just you don't
- 11:22Speaker 6: You don't need them. You can find other stuff to
- 11:25Speaker 6: throw down that whole rocks, sagebrush whatever. I don't really
- 11:30Speaker 6: carry them.
- 11:31Speaker 2: So what you're telling me is wasting my money on mine.
- 11:35Speaker 6: No, if you have them, If you have them, and
- 11:39Speaker 6: when it comes time to use them, you're gonna love them.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure. I've used him a couple of times.
- 11:45Speaker 5: You're supposed to have him like on top of your truck.
- 11:48Speaker 2: Yeah, bright orange ones. Everyone can see him.
- 11:51Speaker 5: That's the thing.
- 11:53Speaker 2: How about uh, how about like towing campers or four
- 11:57Speaker 2: wheeler trailers, anything like any tips there or just like
- 12:03Speaker 2: anything people.
- 12:05Speaker 6: Yeah, I'd say the two things about towing stuff in
- 12:09Speaker 6: is just know what you're towing and like where it is,
- 12:12Speaker 6: because you don't want to get that thing twisted up
- 12:14Speaker 6: or stuck. And then you're also pulling a lot more weight.
- 12:17Speaker 6: So if you're going up super technical stuff, you're you're
- 12:22Speaker 6: putting more stress on all your equipment. On your truck
- 12:25Speaker 6: because you're pulling this extra weight, and I have seen
- 12:28Speaker 6: axle snap and drive shafts and you joints and stuff
- 12:31Speaker 6: go out. So I just know, since you're pulling that
- 12:35Speaker 6: extra weight, you just kind of got to account for it,
- 12:38Speaker 6: and then obviously backing it up like you want to
- 12:42Speaker 6: get it. You know, you don't want to get in
- 12:43Speaker 6: the spot where you're having a backup for a mile,
- 12:45Speaker 6: and especially if it's a small trailer of the things
- 12:47Speaker 6: like twisting around on you.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Earlier, we showed a picture you haul those moose out
- 12:55Speaker 2: from a couple of years ago. Yeah, is that like
- 12:58Speaker 2: the kind of the HAIRYUS four wheel drive and experience
- 13:01Speaker 2: you've you've ever been in?
- 13:03Speaker 6: Uh, definitely not.
- 13:05Speaker 3: I mean.
- 13:09Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean we never even flipped it over on
- 13:11Speaker 6: that one, like it never it never even ended up
- 13:14Speaker 6: upside down. But that was a long one and it
- 13:18Speaker 6: just the the waight of the situation with having you know,
- 13:22Speaker 6: all that meat and trying to get out like we
- 13:25Speaker 6: we went in the first part of the season and
- 13:28Speaker 6: then when we shot those moose was the last day
- 13:31Speaker 6: of the season. So I remember when we were broken
- 13:37Speaker 6: down and this this ship was crazy. We ended up
- 13:42Speaker 6: shooting to mooses, moose missus and uh bulls. We shot
- 13:48Speaker 6: two bulls, and so we had to get all this
- 13:53Speaker 6: meat out and we ended up breaking the belts on
- 13:58Speaker 6: those are kind of known to go and we had
- 13:59Speaker 6: already gone through our spare. We brought a spare and
- 14:02Speaker 6: I had already gone through it, and then we had
- 14:04Speaker 6: to stick go through the radiator and we had to
- 14:07Speaker 6: totally fix that whole situation. So crimp that all down
- 14:12Speaker 6: and get that all fixed. But while we're fixing that,
- 14:16Speaker 6: there was a river nearby, and I remember watching the
- 14:18Speaker 6: last jet boat basically go down the river because there's
- 14:22Speaker 6: there's no reason to be back there unless you're moose hunting.
- 14:26Speaker 6: And it was the last day of the season, and
- 14:29Speaker 6: I remember watching that last boat go by and like
- 14:31Speaker 6: knowing that that was probably our last person that was
- 14:34Speaker 6: going to be out there. And if we couldn't get
- 14:36Speaker 6: that thing fixed, we were nine miles at that point
- 14:39Speaker 6: from the road, so hiking like all that meat to
- 14:42Speaker 6: the road was going to be almost impossible. So we
- 14:45Speaker 6: had to get that thing fixed, and yeah, it was,
- 14:49Speaker 6: It was. It was an amazing trip. We ended up
- 14:51Speaker 6: getting the thing fixed and getting out and took took
- 14:55Speaker 6: a while though it took us four Adyce missed my flight, So.
- 15:00Speaker 2: That's all right. You got a couple of giant bulls.
- 15:02Speaker 2: It's okay, all right. One last question, Danny, what would
- 15:07Speaker 2: your like kind of ideal four wheel drive hunting rig, Like,
- 15:12Speaker 2: what would it be and how would you have it
- 15:14Speaker 2: set up? Like would you have a topper on there camper? Like,
- 15:17Speaker 2: just kind of give us a rundown of what your
- 15:20Speaker 2: rig would look like.
- 15:22Speaker 6: Yeah, no problem. Basically I probably have a mid sized truck.
- 15:27Speaker 6: Full size gets a little big to where you know
- 15:30Speaker 6: you're having trouble making tight corners and stuff maneuver and
- 15:33Speaker 6: ended up like bottom, So like a Tacoma Ford Ranger
- 15:37Speaker 6: or something more in the mid size range. And then
- 15:40Speaker 6: I can just tell you what I have like in
- 15:42Speaker 6: the mainland, Like I have a toylet of Tacoma, and
- 15:45Speaker 6: then I have a deck system in the back stores everything,
- 15:48Speaker 6: lock it up, and then I have a go fast
- 15:50Speaker 6: camp on top, which is like a just a camper
- 15:53Speaker 6: that has a tent on top of it. You don't
- 15:55Speaker 6: necessarily need the tent on top of it. You could
- 15:58Speaker 6: just tent camp, which is fine, but having some way
- 16:00Speaker 6: to enclose the back so that you don't have to
- 16:02Speaker 6: worry about rain and mud and all that stuff would
- 16:04Speaker 6: be amazing. And then honestly, a stock rig nowadays is
- 16:12Speaker 6: pretty awesome. Like if you can fit like thirty two
- 16:16Speaker 6: thirty three inch tires, and most some of the new
- 16:19Speaker 6: stock trucks you could fit thirty threes on just having
- 16:23Speaker 6: bigger tires because everybody's all these lifts and all this stuff. Well,
- 16:26Speaker 6: you're putting all this stuff on so that you can
- 16:28Speaker 6: put bigger tires on so that your fenders don't rub
- 16:30Speaker 6: and you're suspension kind of move. But the bigger tires
- 16:33Speaker 6: is what's giving you more ground clearance, and that's kind
- 16:36Speaker 6: of what you're shooting for. And you can't really beat
- 16:38Speaker 6: stock suspension. Like the amount of money that manufacturers put
- 16:42Speaker 6: into their geometry is huge compared to aftermarket stuff. So
- 16:47Speaker 6: just a stalk mid sized truck with a little bit
- 16:49Speaker 6: bigger tires probably some like I have be a good
- 16:52Speaker 6: rich all terrains and if you know, you're just gonna
- 16:55Speaker 6: be into muddy stuff, so like much rains a little
- 16:57Speaker 6: bit better for that, but I have alterrains and then yeah,
- 17:02Speaker 6: that's that's basically it.
- 17:03Speaker 4: And i'd have a.
- 17:03Speaker 6: I got a shovel in there, I got a jack,
- 17:05Speaker 6: I got all my tools. Bring tools. Make sure you
- 17:08Speaker 6: have all the right tools that you need. I got
- 17:11Speaker 6: toe straps and I got a winch on it. So
- 17:13Speaker 6: it's got rear bumper, front bumper. The rear bumper is
- 17:17Speaker 6: cool because you can pull harder on it, and if
- 17:19Speaker 6: you drag something, it's not as big as you're not
- 17:21Speaker 6: tearing up your stock bumper. But the front bumper holds
- 17:24Speaker 6: the winch, which I can get myself out of a
- 17:27Speaker 6: lot of situations. And I don't need another rig there.
- 17:31Speaker 6: And yeah, that's that's basically it. It's, i mean, fairly simple,
- 17:36Speaker 6: but I definitely have everything I need to get myself out.
- 17:40Speaker 2: Cool. Well, it was great talking to Danny. Hopefully we'll
- 17:43Speaker 2: see you here in a couple of weeks in Montana.
- 17:47Speaker 6: Yeah, definitely, I miss you guys.
- 17:49Speaker 3: All right, it's good to see you.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Good to see you too. Thanks a lot, man.
- 17:52Speaker 3: Thanks Danny. Hey, boys, are.
- 17:57Speaker 2: We doing more truck stuff here in this next second? Yeah?
- 18:02Speaker 2: Throwback Thursday, Phil So back on.
- 18:07Speaker 1: A Thursday, Mom, Stephen Brody, take me back to nineteen
- 18:12Speaker 1: seventy four.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Throw back. I can't believe it did. I mentioned Stephen
- 18:20Speaker 2: Brodie old as shit.
- 18:24Speaker 7: I like, if I can play that, that's my favorite one.
- 18:26Speaker 2: You're going, Phil, who broke this? Mic man? It's just
- 18:29Speaker 2: it's never right Spencer.
- 18:31Speaker 7: Spencer and Randall love to fidget with it when they're
- 18:33Speaker 7: in the seat, so I mean it was probably one
- 18:36Speaker 7: of them.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:37Speaker 4: If I had to throw anyone under the bus here,
- 18:39Speaker 4: great good. I apologize.
- 18:42Speaker 3: All right.
- 18:43Speaker 2: Throw back Thursday, fellas. Uh, we're looking back today at
- 18:47Speaker 2: uh some some close your ears kids, We're gonna look
- 18:51Speaker 2: look back today at some fucked up situations we've been
- 18:54Speaker 2: in in our hunting trucks. So set you're up first.
- 18:59Speaker 4: Cool bringing it up here, seth on Seck.
- 19:04Speaker 3: Take your time, phil Ah, here we go. Oh boy.
- 19:08Speaker 3: This was south of the border in Mexico two three
- 19:14Speaker 3: years ago. Hunted all week long, no rain, and then
- 19:19Speaker 3: the day before we leave it just lets loose and pours,
- 19:23Speaker 3: which it doesn't oftentimes it doesn't rain like that. Down there.
- 19:29Speaker 3: We had like a crappy rental vehicle and then one
- 19:32Speaker 3: of the guys we were with, Matt Cook, he drove
- 19:34Speaker 3: a truck down hauling a couple side by sides and
- 19:39Speaker 3: this ranch we were on had a pretty crappy road
- 19:43Speaker 3: going into it, and of course it rains and we
- 19:47Speaker 3: had to get up early that next morning to get
- 19:51Speaker 3: back across the border to catch a flight to fly
- 19:53Speaker 3: back to Montana. Well, on our way out, still dark out,
- 19:56Speaker 3: as you can see, we get everything stuff and the
- 20:01Speaker 3: truck gets stuck. The rental vehicle gets stuck. So Matt's
- 20:06Speaker 3: truck has two side by sides. He's as stuck as
- 20:09Speaker 3: he could be, and we're in a spot where there's
- 20:12Speaker 3: like no way you could turn around or like, off
- 20:16Speaker 3: to our left it was a steep drop off, so
- 20:18Speaker 3: if he was to roll go off that he would
- 20:20Speaker 3: just roll. To our right was a steep bank. They're
- 20:23Speaker 3: just like and we're on a turn too, so there's
- 20:27Speaker 3: like not a whole lot you could do. We couldn't
- 20:31Speaker 3: get a vehicle past it to try and pull it.
- 20:33Speaker 3: It was a disaster. So our first thing we did
- 20:38Speaker 3: was we need to get some weight off the trailer,
- 20:40Speaker 3: so we pulled the side by sides off, and in
- 20:45Speaker 3: the process of doing that, Jason Phelps was with us.
- 20:49Speaker 3: He hops in one and as he's driving it off
- 20:53Speaker 3: the trailer, I don't know what the hell happened. But
- 20:55Speaker 3: he ends up on the side.
- 20:57Speaker 2: He rolls the thing so like down off the bank.
- 21:01Speaker 3: No in the so he was like, yeah, he was
- 21:05Speaker 3: backing it off the trailer and like I don't know
- 21:06Speaker 3: if you hit the throt a little too hard, but
- 21:08Speaker 3: like hit the bank on the right side that's super steep. Yeah,
- 21:12Speaker 3: and just kind of went right like backed up it
- 21:14Speaker 3: and just slipped it right over. So now we got
- 21:18Speaker 3: two truck, two stuck vehicles and rolled over side by
- 21:22Speaker 3: side and the middle of the road.
- 21:24Speaker 5: That's when you want to just go to bed all the.
- 21:26Speaker 3: Day, like, let's try this again tomorrow. But yeah, I
- 21:31Speaker 3: think there's another photo there, Phil, Yeah, there's there's the
- 21:35Speaker 3: you can see Jason in the cab of the side
- 21:38Speaker 3: by side standing up. But yeah, it was just a
- 21:43Speaker 3: kind of a shit show of the morning. We finally
- 21:45Speaker 3: got everything, you know, we rolled that back over and
- 21:49Speaker 3: then I think we might have remember we might have
- 21:52Speaker 3: somehow gotten side by side around the truck and pulled
- 21:56Speaker 3: it out with that. I don't remember exactly. We ended
- 21:59Speaker 3: up getting out the situation and made it back Sure
- 22:02Speaker 3: to America. You're here, We're here.
- 22:04Speaker 5: Yeah, look at the grease on those tires.
- 22:06Speaker 3: Oh it was so it was like it was almost
- 22:08Speaker 3: like gumbo mud really up here in Montana. Sticky, sticky,
- 22:11Speaker 3: slimy mud. Oh wow, but yeah, that's my story of
- 22:15Speaker 3: getting a truck stuck clip in the side by side
- 22:18Speaker 3: Wow top that?
- 22:23Speaker 5: Yeah, no problem, No, that's that sounds really scary. Let's see.
- 22:28Speaker 5: I used to own a two thousand and one Toyota
- 22:30Speaker 5: Tacoma by far, my favorite truck I'll ever own, probably,
- 22:34Speaker 5: But when I started guiding fly fishermen, it wasn't quite
- 22:37Speaker 5: big enough. So I upgraded to a Tundra, which I'll
- 22:41Speaker 5: one day go back to the Tacoma. But there's a
- 22:43Speaker 5: photo of it right there, two thousand and one Tacoma.
- 22:44Speaker 5: They don't make them like that anymore.
- 22:46Speaker 3: Uh.
- 22:46Speaker 5: And then I when I was when I upgraded to
- 22:49Speaker 5: the Tundra, I sold that truck to my hunting outfitter,
- 22:52Speaker 5: elk hunting Outfitter, with the agreement that I that was
- 22:55Speaker 5: going to be my guide rig. So for a couple
- 22:58Speaker 5: of years I got to guide out of the old truck,
- 23:00Speaker 5: which was great. And one day, second week of rifle
- 23:04Speaker 5: season here in Montana, my client and I went up
- 23:07Speaker 5: onto these two mounds. I drove up onto one of
- 23:09Speaker 5: these mountains. We called them the Boobs, just these two
- 23:12Speaker 5: mountains that stick up out of the middle of nowhere.
- 23:13Speaker 5: They're very obvious. You could see them from miles away.
- 23:16Speaker 5: We called them the Boobs. I parked the truck up
- 23:19Speaker 5: on one of them at like three pm sunsets at
- 23:22Speaker 5: like seven pm. We're just gonna wait there and commit
- 23:24Speaker 5: to that spot, hoping some elk come out of the timber,
- 23:27Speaker 5: and the truck being forest green, hopefully they wouldn't see
- 23:31Speaker 5: us there. I swear I put it in first gear. Naturally,
- 23:36Speaker 5: the parking break was all messed up. I think there
- 23:38Speaker 5: was mud stuck in the emergency brake, so that was
- 23:41Speaker 5: just out of order. But I've had it in first gear,
- 23:44Speaker 5: stepped out of the truck, did some glass and look over,
- 23:46Speaker 5: and my client was sleeping in the passenger seat and
- 23:51Speaker 5: saw three bowls come out of the timber. So I
- 23:53Speaker 5: run over to the truck, and as I turn and look,
- 23:56Speaker 5: the truck is just all a sudden rolling down one
- 23:59Speaker 5: of the boom tubes. With my client Billy and just
- 24:03Speaker 5: sitting in the passenger seat. I see him duck over
- 24:05Speaker 5: to the side and he was able to reach over
- 24:08Speaker 5: and hit the brake, but without the key in it,
- 24:10Speaker 5: the hydraulics locked up, so I'm not sure how it
- 24:12Speaker 5: shifted out a gear, but it did and it started rolling.
- 24:15Speaker 5: I was able to run up, and for some reason
- 24:17Speaker 5: I thought I could be Superman for a hot minute,
- 24:20Speaker 5: and I tried stopping the truck. Instantly knew that wasn't
- 24:23Speaker 5: gonna work. Jumped out of the way. It actually like
- 24:25Speaker 5: dove and did a little roll out of the way.
- 24:27Speaker 5: It was real theatrical, and I just watched the ghost
- 24:31Speaker 5: roll with my client in the passenger seat down into
- 24:34Speaker 5: a pile of trees. Luckily, like ten degrees to the left,
- 24:37Speaker 5: it would have went over a cliff geez. Luckily it
- 24:41Speaker 5: went into some smaller evergreen trees. It was kind of
- 24:44Speaker 5: like it wasn't one big tree, which would have really
- 24:47Speaker 5: messed everything up, including Billy. But it actually just messed
- 24:51Speaker 5: up the radiator bent the whole front end in and
- 24:54Speaker 5: we had to walk out that night because I couldn't
- 24:55Speaker 5: get the truck out. There's a photo of it. It
- 24:57Speaker 5: went into the trees. I just completely sandwiched dominoed a
- 25:02Speaker 5: bunch of a small timber down. We went back the
- 25:05Speaker 5: next day and I was able to actually drive it
- 25:06Speaker 5: out the next day after a little chainsaw work, But yeah,
- 25:10Speaker 5: that was scary. I still don't know exactly what happened.
- 25:13Speaker 5: My client, who had reached over to try and hit
- 25:15Speaker 5: the brake, stayed down and he bruised some ribs because
- 25:19Speaker 5: he was right on the shifter near shifter was right
- 25:21Speaker 5: on his stomach, and when he impacted the trees, it
- 25:25Speaker 5: bruised his ribs. That's all that happened really. Obviously the
- 25:28Speaker 5: truck didn't matter at that point. But my outfitter actually
- 25:31Speaker 5: fixed it up, put a new grill, new radiator, everything
- 25:34Speaker 5: that it needed, which was a lot, put a new
- 25:36Speaker 5: front bumper on it, and we used it again for
- 25:38Speaker 5: a couple more years. I think he sold it just
- 25:40Speaker 5: a few years ago. Sadly I couldn't afford to buy
- 25:42Speaker 5: it back. But yeah, missed that truck. It was the
- 25:45Speaker 5: greatest truck I'll ever own.
- 25:46Speaker 2: Cory aren't there trying to kill his hunting clients?
- 25:50Speaker 5: Well, she shouldn't be sleeping on the job.
- 25:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you guys probably got me beat. Mine's
- 25:57Speaker 2: kind of a standard getting stick overnight, getting stuck overnight story,
- 26:05Speaker 2: But it was because of this buck right here, that
- 26:09Speaker 2: white tail buck. I was hunting up in northern Montana
- 26:12Speaker 2: a couple of years ago, and the road like there's
- 26:16Speaker 2: there's like the main highway, but then all the roads
- 26:19Speaker 2: up there, this is like big agg country. There's very
- 26:22Speaker 2: few trees, not a whole lot of topography like kind
- 26:26Speaker 2: of rolling. But you guys know the roads up there,
- 26:29Speaker 2: like they're public roads, most of them, but they're like
- 26:33Speaker 2: these little two track like unmaintained. They're not roads, right, Yeah,
- 26:39Speaker 2: But so I was back in their ways and I
- 26:42Speaker 2: killed this buck in late afternoon, and it like I
- 26:45Speaker 2: had slept in the truck the night before and it
- 26:49Speaker 2: it had I'd hunted the day before. It rained all day,
- 26:51Speaker 2: then overnight it snowed on top of that rain, and
- 26:54Speaker 2: like on the way to like walk out and hunt
- 26:57Speaker 2: in the morning, I'm like this is bad, Like like
- 27:00Speaker 2: I need to like kill an animal and get out
- 27:03Speaker 2: of here before this stuff starts thawing out. Because it
- 27:06Speaker 2: was like a few inches of heavy wet snow, then
- 27:09Speaker 2: a thin layer of ice, and then a layer of mud. Yeah,
- 27:12Speaker 2: like it wouldn't matter what kind of tires you had on,
- 27:15Speaker 2: and I didn't have change, which was probably a mistake anyway,
- 27:20Speaker 2: I did what I shouldn't have done and stayed out
- 27:23Speaker 2: there all day and shot this buck. Like late afternoon,
- 27:27Speaker 2: everything had started started melting. I get the buck back
- 27:32Speaker 2: to the truck. It's dark, and I'm like, I'm gonna
- 27:34Speaker 2: go for it. And it's like a slight downhill incline
- 27:39Speaker 2: right off the bat to get out of there, and
- 27:42Speaker 2: I go like fifty feet in the truck just does
- 27:45Speaker 2: that slow yeah turn and I'm going sideways down the
- 27:49Speaker 2: road and no, and slid like one hundred feet down
- 27:55Speaker 2: the road. Now I'm like kind of cockye sideways pointing
- 27:58Speaker 2: back the other way, and there's just like no getting
- 28:00Speaker 2: off the road to turn around. I tried, believe me,
- 28:05Speaker 2: and ended up. I just had to sleep in the
- 28:08Speaker 2: truck again that night because I had to wait for
- 28:10Speaker 2: stuff to freeze. So let that be a lesson to you.
- 28:15Speaker 2: Sometimes it's like it was great I got that buck,
- 28:17Speaker 2: but if I'd have been in a more remote or
- 28:20Speaker 2: tougher location, like you know, who knows what would happened.
- 28:25Speaker 2: It's just like I knew walking out that morning to go, honey,
- 28:29Speaker 2: I'm like, I gotta get out of here by like
- 28:32Speaker 2: mid morning before stuff starts to melt and I didn't.
- 28:35Speaker 2: So it was just like what we talked about earlier,
- 28:37Speaker 2: you know, knowing your situation and not getting getting stuck
- 28:42Speaker 2: somewhere because you made a poor decision. But I will
- 28:44Speaker 2: say this, I have a Ford F one fifty and
- 28:48Speaker 2: I like that truck. You've got one seth. I learned
- 28:51Speaker 2: a big lesson on that hunt about like Danny said,
- 28:54Speaker 2: stock stuff is good. Well, i'll tell you what's not
- 28:56Speaker 2: good about Stock f one fifties is they have what
- 29:00Speaker 2: they call a skid maybe they've changed this since mine's
- 29:03Speaker 2: a twenty twenty. They have what they call a skid
- 29:06Speaker 2: plate under there, but it's it's like it's not metal,
- 29:09Speaker 2: it's this like weird almost like fabric paper mache material,
- 29:15Speaker 2: and it's like it'll keep a pebble out of there,
- 29:19Speaker 2: like you know, a little bit of dirt, but it's
- 29:21Speaker 2: not going to protect your important stuff up underneath or
- 29:25Speaker 2: on top of that skid plate. And ripped right through
- 29:29Speaker 2: that thing and poked a hole in the transmission fluid reservoir,
- 29:34Speaker 2: which ended up like druk got a little ways and
- 29:37Speaker 2: then the truck just shit the bed.
- 29:39Speaker 3: Wow, the transmission go out or.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Not completely like it I didn't lose the transmission, but
- 29:46Speaker 2: there was some costs involved in getting it fixed. It
- 29:48Speaker 2: wasn't just plugging the hole and calling it good. But
- 29:51Speaker 2: the first thing I did was put an aftermarket metal
- 29:55Speaker 2: skid plate on that sucker.
- 29:57Speaker 3: Dang, yeah, I gotta check mine now.
- 29:59Speaker 2: Yeah, yours might already ride in fallen off. The Steve's
- 30:03Speaker 2: fell right.
- 30:04Speaker 3: Off might be just another thing add to the list.
- 30:09Speaker 2: So now all the Ford haters gonna be like, I
- 30:11Speaker 2: knew that you shouldn't have bought that truck. Let's see
- 30:14Speaker 2: if we got any of that. And we got any
- 30:16Speaker 2: of that in the listener feedback, Phil.
- 30:20Speaker 7: We've gotten no, We've got no no Ford discourse happening
- 30:25Speaker 7: right now. We do have Randy saying it this is
- 30:26Speaker 7: his favorite episode so far because he loves the ship
- 30:28Speaker 7: show experiences.
- 30:30Speaker 2: Nice.
- 30:30Speaker 7: It's from Randy from Georgetown, Texas. Thanks Randy, thankks Randy.
- 30:35Speaker 7: But yeah, we can we can get get some questions
- 30:37Speaker 7: in here, whether they're about trucks or Father's Day or
- 30:41Speaker 7: or just comments. Let's move on to some listener feedback.
- 30:44Speaker 7: Cody would like to know what the zoom is on
- 30:47Speaker 7: those glasses on my g.
- 30:50Speaker 2: Oh, it's it's light it's like one point five. Okay,
- 30:53Speaker 2: I don't, I don't. I don't need a bunch yet.
- 30:56Speaker 3: Cool.
- 30:57Speaker 7: Lance asks Seth, have you ever gone walleye fishing in Canada?
- 31:00Speaker 7: If so, where is the spot?
- 31:02Speaker 3: Yeah? I have not gone walleye fishing in Canada. It's
- 31:06Speaker 3: that's a bucket list trip. I want to do that eventually.
- 31:09Speaker 3: But I feel like there's lots of spots.
- 31:13Speaker 2: Yeah, Like where I grew up, everyone used to go
- 31:16Speaker 2: out Ontario, but like Giannis was just bear hunting and
- 31:20Speaker 2: what man Manitoba.
- 31:21Speaker 3: They clabbered them there, they clobbered them there. I mean
- 31:24Speaker 3: Lake of the Woods is always yeah, notoriously good. Yeah.
- 31:29Speaker 3: I think there's lots of options up there. Love to
- 31:31Speaker 3: check it out someday, Caleb. He asks, what is the
- 31:36Speaker 3: best gift for a hunting dad. We've got two dads
- 31:38Speaker 3: at the table. What would be a thing that you
- 31:40Speaker 3: guys have received or O would love to receive from
- 31:44Speaker 3: your family?
- 31:44Speaker 2: Man, my wife hates buying me. It's like a standard thing,
- 31:51Speaker 2: like because I just buy the ship I want for myself, right,
- 31:54Speaker 2: So it's always like, well what do you want? I'm like,
- 31:56Speaker 2: I don't need anything, and then I what I need?
- 31:58Speaker 2: I just go buy so man, it's a tough one. Yeah.
- 32:03Speaker 3: And it's like.
- 32:06Speaker 2: There's all kinds of different hunting dads. There might be
- 32:08Speaker 2: like a duck hunting dad and an ell hunting dad.
- 32:11Speaker 2: That's a tough question to answer. Ask them what they
- 32:14Speaker 2: want and then say I'm getting this for you. Don't
- 32:17Speaker 2: buy it for yourself. That'd be my advice.
- 32:19Speaker 3: Yeah, it's good call. Or don't buy them anything. Just
- 32:21Speaker 3: do something that's like real thoughtful.
- 32:23Speaker 2: Yeah, you know exactly. I'd rather like hang out with
- 32:26Speaker 2: my kids and my wife camping for a weekend. Then oh,
- 32:30Speaker 2: totally get some piece of gear.
- 32:32Speaker 3: Just say like, we're going camping this weekend, dad, I'm
- 32:34Speaker 3: gonna get all the ship ready.
- 32:36Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, there you go.
- 32:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:40Speaker 5: The greatest gift I ever got, though, was from my
- 32:42Speaker 5: wife for Father's Day. We were able to drop the
- 32:44Speaker 5: kid off with the grandparents, which was fun for Father's
- 32:48Speaker 5: Day of all days. But we went fishing on the
- 32:50Speaker 5: Missouri with a guide.
- 32:51Speaker 3: Oh.
- 32:52Speaker 5: It was really fun. Guided fishing trip. Wherever you are.
- 32:55Speaker 5: I'm sure that that's an option.
- 32:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean if you can, if you can afford it, Like, yeah,
- 33:00Speaker 2: find out what their bucket list trip is and get
- 33:02Speaker 2: that for him.
- 33:03Speaker 3: Yep.
- 33:05Speaker 7: Uh favorite trolling lure and what are you targeting with it?
- 33:08Speaker 7: It's from Matthias. I think he corrected me. I said
- 33:11Speaker 7: Mattias last time because I know a French guy named Mattias,
- 33:13Speaker 7: but it is Matthias.
- 33:16Speaker 3: Uh.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Man, you're down on trolling.
- 33:22Speaker 5: But what's your favorite?
- 33:23Speaker 3: I don't control much.
- 33:25Speaker 1: Uh.
- 33:25Speaker 3: When I do, it's like crank baits and stuff.
- 33:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean we uh, we'll pull crank baits like
- 33:32Speaker 2: there's a there's an old lake erie. I think it's
- 33:35Speaker 2: a lake erie lure called the Wally Diver. Oh yeah, yeah,
- 33:38Speaker 2: that's a good wall I want, I mean anything elait
- 33:40Speaker 2: them we pull? Uh what are those Berkeley flick or
- 33:43Speaker 2: Minnow that's a good one that we do well.
- 33:46Speaker 3: Like that one a bunch.
- 33:47Speaker 2: Ye, So we do a little. We will definitely like
- 33:50Speaker 2: take a break and do some trolling.
- 33:52Speaker 3: Yeah, you can do some if you want to switch
- 33:54Speaker 3: it up. Some bottom bouncers with like spinner rigs and stuff.
- 33:59Speaker 2: You know what I've always wanted to do. You know
- 34:01Speaker 2: when them big schools of Coho get circling outside the creek,
- 34:04Speaker 2: so oh yeah, I always wanted to try trolling through those. Yeah,
- 34:08Speaker 2: see what happens. I bet you.
- 34:10Speaker 3: I'm all about trying new things up there.
- 34:11Speaker 2: Yeah, why not?
- 34:12Speaker 3: Would be cool?
- 34:14Speaker 4: Uh, let's see.
- 34:16Speaker 7: Jesse says he just got a two thousand and six Tacoma.
- 34:19Speaker 7: It has no bells or whistles. What would be a
- 34:21Speaker 7: couple of the first upgrades of attachments you'd put on
- 34:24Speaker 7: for hunting?
- 34:24Speaker 2: Chains, tires, like, depending on what it's got on there
- 34:28Speaker 2: for tires for sure, Yeah, gets you some good.
- 34:31Speaker 3: Good tires. I'm a fan of toppers too, so am
- 34:34Speaker 3: I I like having a topper, keep my stuff dry.
- 34:37Speaker 3: I can sleep in there, you can lock it up.
- 34:40Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I get you a topper.
- 34:44Speaker 4: Right on.
- 34:45Speaker 7: And I thought this was a fun, fun comment. We're
- 34:48Speaker 7: not doing throwback Thursday anymore. But at Cody J when
- 34:50Speaker 7: we were talking to Danny said that he drives and
- 34:53Speaker 7: is a medic for tornado hunters and that it's a blast.
- 34:56Speaker 7: And he said he also knew one of the guys
- 34:58Speaker 7: that that Danny was hanging out with.
- 35:01Speaker 4: Oh nice, and he was doing that. So anyway, small
- 35:03Speaker 4: small world.
- 35:03Speaker 3: Man. In a different life, I'd be a freaking storm chick. Yeah,
- 35:07Speaker 3: have at it, man, it's cool.
- 35:09Speaker 2: Yeah, not interested man? Like Yeah, I think when I
- 35:13Speaker 2: was in like eighth grade, I think it was eighth grade,
- 35:16Speaker 2: we used to get tornado I grew up northwestern Pennsylvania,
- 35:19Speaker 2: so it's not like the most tornado e spot in
- 35:22Speaker 2: the nation, but we would get tornado warnings. And in
- 35:25Speaker 2: eighth grade, the next town over from us just got
- 35:29Speaker 2: walloped by by a tornado and like thirty people died.
- 35:32Speaker 2: So like, geez, I don't have any I don't need that.
- 35:37Speaker 5: Yeah, as a Montana kid, tornadoes freaked me out.
- 35:39Speaker 3: I'm going the other way. Yeah, I think they're cool,
- 35:42Speaker 3: but I've never really had a bad experience with one.
- 35:44Speaker 5: So yeah, chase them up, see what happens.
- 35:46Speaker 3: Cool.
- 35:47Speaker 7: We can call it right there, but I would doing
- 35:48Speaker 7: this again at the end of the show. So please
- 35:51Speaker 7: submit more questions and we will feel them in a
- 35:54Speaker 7: few minutes.
- 35:55Speaker 2: Alrighty, So Father's Day and what is it? Three days
- 36:00Speaker 2: something like that?
- 36:01Speaker 3: Ye, Sundays days under so U.
- 36:04Speaker 2: In honor of that, we're each gonna share a picture
- 36:08Speaker 2: and a story about hunting. You guys didn't do any fishing,
- 36:11Speaker 2: just hunting, right.
- 36:12Speaker 3: I did fishing, You did fishing.
- 36:13Speaker 2: So hunting and fishing with our dads, we're just gonna
- 36:17Speaker 2: We're just gonna honor our our dads for for getting
- 36:21Speaker 2: us into hunting and fishing. So you up first, seth, Sure,
- 36:25Speaker 2: I'll go.
- 36:27Speaker 3: I got a bunch of photos of me and my
- 36:29Speaker 3: old man up at the cabin in Alaska.
- 36:32Speaker 2: That was just last was that last year.
- 36:34Speaker 3: He's been coming up the last three years now, so
- 36:38Speaker 3: I have a bunch of photos. But this is like,
- 36:41Speaker 3: it's cool bringing my old man up to the cabin
- 36:44Speaker 3: because like this is the first thing, like one of
- 36:47Speaker 3: the first things in my life where instead of him
- 36:49Speaker 3: teaching me something, I'm teaching him something new, which is
- 36:53Speaker 3: pretty cool. And he's just like completely fell in love
- 36:56Speaker 3: with like doing all this stuff up there, all the
- 36:59Speaker 3: fishing and whatnot. So yeah, he comes up every summer
- 37:03Speaker 3: now and I put him to work. He's he's cheap labor.
- 37:08Speaker 3: He does a lot of firewood splitting and he could
- 37:10Speaker 3: swing a hammer. But here's some salmon that we caught
- 37:14Speaker 3: up there. But yeah, he comes up every summer now
- 37:17Speaker 3: and and helps out with the cabin, and yeah, it's
- 37:22Speaker 3: just like he's you know, he grew up on the
- 37:25Speaker 3: East Coast and that whole world is like so new
- 37:28Speaker 3: to him and he's he's just getting to like see
- 37:31Speaker 3: him new just getting to watch him see new things
- 37:34Speaker 3: that he's never seen before, and like catch fish that
- 37:36Speaker 3: he's never caught before. And it's just super cool and
- 37:41Speaker 3: one one funny thing. And bro, do you know how
- 37:43Speaker 3: it is up there, Like when people first start fishing
- 37:47Speaker 3: up there, it's like they just kind of don't remember
- 37:51Speaker 3: how to fish almost. So here's him fighting a small
- 37:55Speaker 3: halibit which he thinks is a giant halibit, which is common.
- 38:00Speaker 3: And yeah, just just like trying to teach like the
- 38:04Speaker 3: hook sets or if you're running like circle hooks, not
- 38:07Speaker 3: to set the hook. Yeah, it's just been a blast
- 38:11Speaker 3: the last you know, three years, getting to chill my
- 38:15Speaker 3: old man that part of the country and that type
- 38:17Speaker 3: of fishing.
- 38:18Speaker 2: Yeah. I hung out with him a bit up there,
- 38:20Speaker 2: and he seems really love it.
- 38:22Speaker 3: Oh, he loves it. It's all he talks about.
- 38:23Speaker 2: Yeah, Corey, what are you doing down there?
- 38:29Speaker 5: Making sure our next guest is ready to roll? It
- 38:31Speaker 5: looks like he just showed up, so.
- 38:32Speaker 2: We're doing some producing work at the same time he's hosting.
- 38:36Speaker 4: Oh dude, Yeah, he can do it all.
- 38:38Speaker 5: Got a man of many hands, all right, Corey, Oh
- 38:42Speaker 5: my turn, you're up. Let's see, man. I got a
- 38:44Speaker 5: lot of great stories hunting and fishing with my dad
- 38:47Speaker 5: growing up. He moved up to Montana back in the
- 38:51Speaker 5: seventies to get away from the hustle and bustle of Nevada,
- 38:55Speaker 5: bought some horses and started hunting in the In the
- 38:57Speaker 5: Bob Marshall, that's kind of what what helped drive my
- 39:01Speaker 5: desire to want to do the same thing, was able
- 39:03Speaker 5: to guide back in there kind of chase his dreams
- 39:07Speaker 5: a little bit, which was super cool. But I owe
- 39:09Speaker 5: a lot to them for getting me into outdoor recreation
- 39:12Speaker 5: for sure. But this particular story was in I believe
- 39:16Speaker 5: in two thousand and five. I was a junior in
- 39:18Speaker 5: high school. My dad and I were in northwest Montana
- 39:22Speaker 5: archery l hunting. I think it was September twenty first.
- 39:25Speaker 5: We had a bit of a snowstorm the day before
- 39:27Speaker 5: and we hunted together in the morning. Didn't hear any bugles,
- 39:30Speaker 5: which I feel like is pretty typical after a snowstorm
- 39:33Speaker 5: like that, and we decided to split up and spread
- 39:36Speaker 5: out a couple hundred yards. It just worked this basin
- 39:38Speaker 5: that we saw some tracks in the day before and
- 39:44Speaker 5: I don't know what time. It was probably ten to
- 39:46Speaker 5: eleven in the morning, not early, but it wasn't later
- 39:49Speaker 5: in the day. And two bulls come up, just naturally,
- 39:52Speaker 5: up right in front of me. They never saw me.
- 39:54Speaker 5: I was just timber sneaking through the woods, and I
- 39:56Speaker 5: was able to arrow one of the two bulls. Young
- 39:59Speaker 5: Raghorn dropped him beautiful shot. Got really lucky, I would say,
- 40:04Speaker 5: being that that young and not much of a hunter yet,
- 40:09Speaker 5: and I was pumped. We had two way radios, so
- 40:12Speaker 5: I radioed my dad as soon as I went up
- 40:14Speaker 5: and touched the thing and knew that it was dead
- 40:15Speaker 5: and had a lot of work to do, and radioed
- 40:17Speaker 5: my dad. Told him I got my first bowl with
- 40:19Speaker 5: my bow, and he's like, no way, I just shot
- 40:21Speaker 5: a bowl too. So we killed two bulls. It might
- 40:24Speaker 5: have been within the same moment. We have no idea, obviously,
- 40:26Speaker 5: because we weren't with each other and didn't have on
- 40:29Speaker 5: X or anything at the time. So yeah, we killed
- 40:32Speaker 5: two bowls, not luckily not too far from the truck.
- 40:36Speaker 2: One's enough work you get two down at the same time.
- 40:39Speaker 5: It was probably four miles from the truck. Had to
- 40:41Speaker 5: go up the hill and down that same trip actually
- 40:44Speaker 5: leap frog and quarters had a black bear grab one
- 40:46Speaker 5: of my hind quarters and tried dragging it off. Almost
- 40:49Speaker 5: killed a bear that day too, but knew how much
- 40:51Speaker 5: work we still had to be up. But that was
- 40:53Speaker 5: pretty epic, epic memory. He had killed an elk before
- 40:57Speaker 5: with his bow, but that was my first archery bowl
- 40:59Speaker 5: And yeah, pretty special moment to have that happen.
- 41:02Speaker 3: That was really cool for sure.
- 41:03Speaker 2: And he's you said he's coming out here, uh soon.
- 41:08Speaker 5: Well, he lives in Kallispell up northwest Mont and we're
- 41:11Speaker 5: going to meet up this weekend and fish the Missouri together.
- 41:13Speaker 2: That's right, Yeah, what you're getting that? All right? I
- 41:17Speaker 2: guess it's my turn. My old man there he is,
- 41:22Speaker 2: uh like my dad, Like, he's definitely like the reason
- 41:27Speaker 2: why I'm sitting in his seat right now is the
- 41:29Speaker 2: reason why I became a fishing guide. Like it was
- 41:32Speaker 2: just like hunting and fishing with him as a kid,
- 41:35Speaker 2: Like learned a lot from him, loved being out in
- 41:39Speaker 2: the woods with him, and and then like kind of
- 41:42Speaker 2: got away from doing that kind of stuff together for
- 41:45Speaker 2: for a long time. And and then after I moved
- 41:49Speaker 2: out to Colorado, and got into hunting. I kind of
- 41:51Speaker 2: talked him in to start coming out to do some
- 41:55Speaker 2: mule deer hunts and and and it was super cool
- 41:58Speaker 2: and he got bucks pretty much every year he came out.
- 42:02Speaker 2: I think he was seventy one in this picture, so
- 42:05Speaker 2: he probably started coming out like his mid sixties and
- 42:09Speaker 2: shot some bucks. Nothing huge, but you know, some decent bucks.
- 42:12Speaker 2: This was I think in twenty eleven, and he drew
- 42:17Speaker 2: a third season rifle tag in Colorado. Since I knew
- 42:22Speaker 2: he had drawn that tag, I wasn't gonna hunt that
- 42:26Speaker 2: season for a buck. I was just like focused on
- 42:29Speaker 2: getting him a big one, because, like I said, he's
- 42:31Speaker 2: seventy one, and he got around pretty good. But you
- 42:34Speaker 2: know he's seventy one, so you just don't know how
- 42:36Speaker 2: much more time he's got to do that kind of hunting.
- 42:40Speaker 2: So I went into this area like a week before
- 42:43Speaker 2: the season started, and like right off the bat, I
- 42:47Speaker 2: I glass up a bull a bull ELK. I'm like, shit, man,
- 42:51Speaker 2: like we're supposed to be deer hunting next week, but
- 42:53Speaker 2: I'm gonna pick up an over the counter bull tag too,
- 42:56Speaker 2: and we go in there we go in opening morning,
- 43:00Speaker 2: we were glassing around there's deer around, small bucks, nothing
- 43:02Speaker 2: to shoot at. And I look up the ridge and
- 43:05Speaker 2: there's three bulls working down the ridge and I was like,
- 43:08Speaker 2: peace out, Dad, I'm going after these bulls and run
- 43:11Speaker 2: up there and got in tight and shot shot a bull.
- 43:16Speaker 2: So the next like day and a half was dealing
- 43:18Speaker 2: with that bull, you know, and you know, my dad
- 43:21Speaker 2: was kind of doing some hunting on the side, but
- 43:23Speaker 2: it was warm and nothing. Nothing happened. Then I'm like
- 43:26Speaker 2: day it would have been like day four, maybe in
- 43:30Speaker 2: the evening we found this buck and just could not
- 43:35Speaker 2: get it done. That evening was he was too far away.
- 43:37Speaker 2: There's a lot of doze around. Who's gonna get dark.
- 43:39Speaker 2: So we went right back in there the next morning
- 43:43Speaker 2: and found him right away and made a move on him,
- 43:46Speaker 2: and we ended up like well, like almost screwed it up.
- 43:49Speaker 2: Like we ended up real tight, like seventy yards. So
- 43:53Speaker 2: my dad's just like offhand, shot real quick and spined him.
- 43:59Speaker 2: I was like, you gotta that deer again, but he's
- 44:01Speaker 2: like on the ground, you know, and you can't really
- 44:03Speaker 2: get out his vitals. I've never seen a seventy one
- 44:07Speaker 2: year old man run like seventy yards that fast like
- 44:11Speaker 2: in my life, and he ran up to it finished
- 44:14Speaker 2: it off, and I was like, man, like, you don't know,
- 44:18Speaker 2: like you don't know what you just shot, like you
- 44:20Speaker 2: have no it shot some older bucks, but nothing like that.
- 44:23Speaker 2: It was like, this thing is like I think this
- 44:25Speaker 2: thing's over two hundred.
- 44:27Speaker 3: And he still was.
- 44:28Speaker 2: Like not convinced. And we we pack it out and
- 44:34Speaker 2: we get home and I take like a one seventy
- 44:37Speaker 2: buck that I had shot earlier in the year and
- 44:40Speaker 2: set those antlers inside those antlers. I'm like, like you
- 44:44Speaker 2: get it now, like how big this thing is? And
- 44:46Speaker 2: it ended up scoring like I can't remember what was
- 44:49Speaker 2: like two oh six or two oh.
- 44:50Speaker 3: Nine or something like that.
- 44:52Speaker 2: You can't really this picture's not great. It's from back
- 44:55Speaker 2: in the day when like digital cameras weren't that great.
- 44:58Speaker 2: But he's got a couple stickers coming off his right
- 45:01Speaker 2: side and there's one off the back of his left
- 45:03Speaker 2: side that you can't see. Just a really cool old
- 45:07Speaker 2: buck and uh yeah, man, like every time I go
- 45:11Speaker 2: back to Pennsylvania to stare at that thing, it's just
- 45:14Speaker 2: an awesome deer.
- 45:15Speaker 3: Yeah that's cool.
- 45:16Speaker 2: So it was kind of like you saith where it
- 45:19Speaker 2: felt like I was like doing what he had done
- 45:21Speaker 2: for me. Yeah, you know later in life. So yeah,
- 45:25Speaker 2: he's uh, he still does a little hunting at home,
- 45:27Speaker 2: but not as much as he used to. He's getting
- 45:31Speaker 2: up there.
- 45:31Speaker 3: That's cool. That's cool. Nice buck, Yeah, big buck, big buck.
- 45:37Speaker 2: Hmm.
- 45:38Speaker 5: I'm ready for the fall.
- 45:39Speaker 3: Let's go.
- 45:40Speaker 2: Okay, speaking of Father's Day, we got to remind you
- 45:43Speaker 2: that our our Meat Eater and First Light Father's Day
- 45:46Speaker 2: sales are going on right now. So, like we talked
- 45:49Speaker 2: about gifts earlier, forget the ties, socks, golf clubs, like,
- 45:53Speaker 2: get on the med Eater website, the First Light website
- 45:56Speaker 2: and get your get the dads in your life something
- 45:59Speaker 2: they'll like. And if you don't know what to get him,
- 46:01Speaker 2: then get him a gift card and they'll get what
- 46:03Speaker 2: they want. And that's going on now through all the
- 46:07Speaker 2: way through the weekend, right I believe. So yeah, yeah,
- 46:09Speaker 2: So check it out on on the Mediator website or
- 46:12Speaker 2: the First Light website. There's some some good deals going
- 46:15Speaker 2: on right now.
- 46:17Speaker 3: Cool.
- 46:17Speaker 2: All right, Now it's time to uh to do the
- 46:21Speaker 2: interview where we're trying to get done a couple of
- 46:23Speaker 2: weeks ago. We're gonna interview Josh Miller. He's a fishing
- 46:26Speaker 2: guide from western uh, Western Washington, and I think he
- 46:31Speaker 2: guts like salmon and steelhead and the rivers, and also
- 46:36Speaker 2: like coastal fisheries too, out in the ocean.
- 46:39Speaker 5: That's what I understand. Yeah, let's find out.
- 46:41Speaker 2: But he's got some of you may have seen him
- 46:44Speaker 2: on on Instagram. He's got a co captain, which is
- 46:47Speaker 2: Rider Rider the Turkey. So, joh, we got Josh on
- 46:51Speaker 2: the line. Here we are there he is, Hey, Josh, Hey, Josh, gentlemen,
- 46:58Speaker 2: good as good as you though.
- 47:00Speaker 3: Where are you at.
- 47:02Speaker 1: I'm out in the straight of Wanda Fuca fishing for
- 47:05Speaker 1: halibate right now?
- 47:06Speaker 5: Oh God?
- 47:07Speaker 3: Nice?
- 47:07Speaker 5: Nice?
- 47:08Speaker 2: Nice?
- 47:09Speaker 3: Uh.
- 47:09Speaker 2: First of all, tell us about your uh, your early
- 47:12Speaker 2: bird guidance service, Like what do you fish for? Where
- 47:15Speaker 2: do you guys fish, what time of year? All that
- 47:17Speaker 2: stuff goes a quick rundown.
- 47:21Speaker 1: So right now I'm doing raft trips. We do coastal
- 47:25Speaker 1: tributaries and Columbia River tributaries, a lot of steelhead fishing,
- 47:29Speaker 1: a lot of kingfishing and coho fishing. I do spend
- 47:33Speaker 1: the summers in Alaska fishing sake on the Kenai. So
- 47:37Speaker 1: if you're interested in that, I can get you out
- 47:40Speaker 1: in Keenai, Alaska for sake. And then the winter time
- 47:46Speaker 1: after and anytime after New Year's is an awesome steelhead season.
- 47:49Speaker 1: But yeah, year round we're catching big chrome fish.
- 47:52Speaker 2: Nice, nice, Well, we gotta we gotta ask like you're
- 47:58Speaker 2: you're pretty well known on the instagram him for your uh,
- 48:01Speaker 2: your unusual first mate that happens to be a turkey.
- 48:07Speaker 2: So like, how did the whole thing with with bringing
- 48:09Speaker 2: along the turkey and the boat get started?
- 48:13Speaker 1: Well, I got a bunch of them, these heritage birds
- 48:16Speaker 1: to raise, and a weasel got into the coup, and
- 48:19Speaker 1: long story short, there was only one left and it
- 48:22Speaker 1: was literally ride or die for the little guy. I
- 48:25Speaker 1: was fishing the next day, so he had no choice.
- 48:28Speaker 1: He had to go out on the boat as a
- 48:29Speaker 1: little baby. And here we are seven years later. He's
- 48:34Speaker 1: got the program pretty well figured out, fit all sorts
- 48:40Speaker 1: of fishing trips. I've had him with me on a
- 48:42Speaker 1: mule deer hunt and we harvested him.
- 48:46Speaker 3: That's awesome.
- 48:47Speaker 1: Elk hunting, I shot a cow elk with him following
- 48:50Speaker 1: me through the woods.
- 48:51Speaker 2: Dude, you gotta watch out. Someone might take a crack
- 48:53Speaker 2: at that turkey while you're hunting.
- 48:56Speaker 1: Right, I don't know. He's the way I look at it.
- 48:59Speaker 1: He's lift such a good life. I don't think you
- 49:01Speaker 1: can get any better.
- 49:02Speaker 2: For a turkey.
- 49:05Speaker 1: So then so be it.
- 49:09Speaker 2: There we go, There we go. So like people people
- 49:13Speaker 2: like to bring their dogs on boats, like I do it.
- 49:18Speaker 2: Some some dogs are like really annoying when you're fishing
- 49:21Speaker 2: in a boat, and some are super chill. Where does
- 49:24Speaker 2: where does rider fall on that on that scale? And
- 49:27Speaker 2: and like does he react to fish being caught?
- 49:30Speaker 3: Oh?
- 49:30Speaker 1: Yeah, when he hears drag pulling out of a real
- 49:33Speaker 1: he starts ripping gobbles, going on and everything. And he's fine.
- 49:43Speaker 1: He's got He's got a lot of characters play having
- 49:45Speaker 1: a dog and a cat at the time. He's got
- 49:47Speaker 1: a little bit of attitude, But most of the time.
- 49:53Speaker 2: That is excellent, a ton of fun.
- 49:56Speaker 1: Even when I'm pulling out of the driveway with the boat,
- 49:59Speaker 1: He'll chase the tr down just because I'm towing the boat.
- 50:01Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, Uh. Do you got any clients that specifically
- 50:06Speaker 2: requests for that turkey to be in the boat with
- 50:09Speaker 2: him all the Yeah?
- 50:11Speaker 1: I bet I'd just say, as long as you tip
- 50:14Speaker 1: the bird, I'll bring him nice.
- 50:20Speaker 2: Nice you guys getting them today? Got any action?
- 50:22Speaker 3: I know?
- 50:22Speaker 2: Unfortunately, he couldn't join today because you had some pretty
- 50:25Speaker 2: rough seas out there.
- 50:27Speaker 1: Yeah, we got some rough water and we got four
- 50:29Speaker 1: people in the boat, so we decided to leave him
- 50:32Speaker 1: at home today. We got out here about an hour
- 50:35Speaker 1: and a half ago, and we've caught three dog fish
- 50:38Speaker 1: so little sharks. No hell of it yet.
- 50:41Speaker 2: Well, keep at it now, and I don't I don't
- 50:45Speaker 2: want to upset you with this next question. I hope,
- 50:47Speaker 2: I hope Ryder has a bunch more years of fishing
- 50:50Speaker 2: ahead of him. But since, uh, since we're here at
- 50:53Speaker 2: meet it or we we all love eating wild turkeys.
- 50:56Speaker 2: So is there any chance that bird is going to
- 50:59Speaker 2: end up on the table at Thanksgiving?
- 51:00Speaker 3: Her?
- 51:01Speaker 2: Are you going to give him a proper burial at
- 51:03Speaker 2: sea once his time is up?
- 51:05Speaker 1: Oh? I think he deserves a proper burial. I don't
- 51:09Speaker 1: know about you know, if he's seven years.
- 51:10Speaker 2: Old, nice, nice, Well, hopefully got you got several more
- 51:17Speaker 2: years with him in the boat with you.
- 51:20Speaker 1: It's always a fun time around Thanksgiving.
- 51:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I bet, I bet I had.
- 51:26Speaker 1: Him sit down at the table with us and gave
- 51:29Speaker 1: him a plate of green bees.
- 51:32Speaker 2: Is he house trained or boat trained?
- 51:36Speaker 1: When he was younger, I used to have him where
- 51:39Speaker 1: he had pecked the door or the window to turn
- 51:41Speaker 1: around and tell me to let him out. But I
- 51:44Speaker 1: don't get to spend a ton of time with him anymore.
- 51:47Speaker 2: Yeah, but most.
- 51:48Speaker 1: Part, yeah, he's pretty well trained. Like he'll wait a
- 51:51Speaker 1: two hour car ride to the river and then when
- 51:53Speaker 1: I let him out, he'll do his business.
- 51:55Speaker 2: Nice.
- 51:56Speaker 1: Nice, But he's a pretty smart bird.
- 52:00Speaker 3: That's cool.
- 52:01Speaker 2: Cool, Well, Josh, thanks for talking to us today. I
- 52:03Speaker 2: hope you guys find some halbit out there, and I
- 52:06Speaker 2: hope you can continue to have fun with your turkey
- 52:09Speaker 2: fishing companion.
- 52:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 52:11Speaker 5: All the best to rider.
- 52:12Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm happy to be on the show guys.
- 52:15Speaker 2: All right, thanks a lot man.
- 52:17Speaker 1: All right, you guys take care.
- 52:19Speaker 3: You too, Thanks Josh. That is awesome.
- 52:23Speaker 4: That was cool.
- 52:24Speaker 3: Phil.
- 52:24Speaker 2: We got time for some more feedback.
- 52:26Speaker 7: Yeah, we don't have a whole lot of feedback right now.
- 52:28Speaker 7: But Robert asks Seth, if you remember, Seth, what kind
- 52:32Speaker 7: of rifle did you use on the Texas deer hunt
- 52:34Speaker 7: in rough cuts?
- 52:35Speaker 4: Do you remember a hunt?
- 52:36Speaker 3: That rifle was.
- 52:39Speaker 2: So kind?
- 52:40Speaker 3: Of funny backstory. I wasn't actually supposed to be hunting
- 52:42Speaker 3: on that chuot. One thing led to another and I
- 52:47Speaker 3: ended up being on camera, So I actually didn't bring
- 52:50Speaker 3: a rifle down there. I just went and grabbed it
- 52:54Speaker 3: was an old Remington threeh eight. I don't even know
- 52:57Speaker 3: exactly what it was, but I just grabbed it out
- 52:59Speaker 3: of the gun safe at the ranch and when shot
- 53:03Speaker 3: to make sure it was shooting good. And that's what
- 53:06Speaker 3: I took out. It was like an old woodstock thumb hole,
- 53:10Speaker 3: like old schoolly wood gun, which was kind of cool
- 53:14Speaker 3: because I don't usually hunt with stuff like that.
- 53:16Speaker 2: Yeah, and you guys weren't taking particularly long shot.
- 53:19Speaker 3: It was all close stuff. So yeah, I remember it
- 53:22Speaker 3: was a Remington, but I don't remember exactly what it was.
- 53:26Speaker 7: Oscar asks, what is the smallest area of private land
- 53:29Speaker 7: that you'd hunt turkeys? He says he has ten acres
- 53:32Speaker 7: in Michigan.
- 53:34Speaker 2: Sure, why not?
- 53:34Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 53:35Speaker 3: Ten You can get her down on ten acres for sure.
- 53:37Speaker 2: Especially if they're roosted nearby, like on your land or nearby. Yeah,
- 53:43Speaker 2: call him in there, Yeah, sure, why not?
- 53:46Speaker 7: Remington asks how old were you when you started hunting
- 53:49Speaker 7: without your.
- 53:49Speaker 2: Dad, man I broke the law.
- 53:52Speaker 3: Yeah, same.
- 53:54Speaker 2: I think it was fourteen in Pennsylvania. You had to
- 53:56Speaker 2: be think, so you hunt alone and and the minimum
- 54:00Speaker 2: hunting age back then was twelve, and I was hunting
- 54:04Speaker 2: alone when I was twelve a lot same.
- 54:06Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I think, man, I probably would have been
- 54:09Speaker 5: like seventeen by the time I finally went out with
- 54:11Speaker 5: a buddy. My dad was my hunting buddy growing up. Yeah,
- 54:14Speaker 5: it's pretty seventeen.
- 54:15Speaker 3: Probably.
- 54:16Speaker 2: It's weird to me to think about it now that
- 54:18Speaker 2: I have my own kids, like a thirteen year old
- 54:21Speaker 2: and a ten year old, and they can hunt at
- 54:23Speaker 2: ten in Montana. But like, like I don't know about you, Stef,
- 54:27Speaker 2: but like I I would just go walk on the
- 54:30Speaker 2: nate like all the neighboring farms all day. Let's just
- 54:33Speaker 2: be gone all day. And for me to think about
- 54:37Speaker 2: letting my thirteen year old or my you know, when
- 54:40Speaker 2: my ten year old is twelve do it at that age,
- 54:43Speaker 2: it's like kind of weird. But I feel like that's
- 54:46Speaker 2: a problem with me, not a problem with them being
- 54:49Speaker 2: able to go do it if you like give them
- 54:51Speaker 2: the confidence to go do it.
- 54:53Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, John asks Brody, don't you think there should
- 54:57Speaker 7: be a time limit on trivia questions.
- 55:00Speaker 2: Yes, it depends if I'm having trouble with the question or.
- 55:04Speaker 7: Someone to say, if you if whoever's sure of an answer,
- 55:07Speaker 7: they want a time limit.
- 55:09Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, but honestly, like often the conversations, the banter
- 55:16Speaker 2: that happens while we're extending the time on those, it's
- 55:19Speaker 2: it's pretty fun. I mean it could get taken too far, obviously,
- 55:24Speaker 2: like if because the more talk that goes on, the
- 55:27Speaker 2: more the better the chance that something is given away
- 55:30Speaker 2: and someone comes up with an answer. You hope they will.
- 55:33Speaker 7: The time limit would would ruin the energy of the
- 55:36Speaker 7: show because if it were too long and it was
- 55:38Speaker 7: an easy question, then we're just sitting there. I guess
- 55:40Speaker 7: if people if if we all agreed we wanted to
- 55:42Speaker 7: be done, we could move on. But but yeah, like
- 55:44Speaker 7: like Brody said, just the flexibility.
- 55:47Speaker 2: I think maybe we could screw around with like a
- 55:50Speaker 2: special edition of Meat Eater where it's like a speed
- 55:54Speaker 2: round or maybe likes yeah, like it's like you get
- 55:59Speaker 2: thirty seconds and that's that. Like, maybe we could.
- 56:02Speaker 7: Screw around with randall is all caps in the chat
- 56:04Speaker 7: saying yes on the time limit, there's too many.
- 56:07Speaker 2: Spence Randall just happened to lose a couple of times
- 56:13Speaker 2: and now he's all been out of shape.
- 56:15Speaker 7: He's no foul play. Randall says, let's see Oscar. We've
- 56:20Speaker 7: got to you know, if we already did Oscar?
- 56:23Speaker 4: Uh?
- 56:23Speaker 7: Did I did I start this? There was a comment
- 56:26Speaker 7: boys two Pa boys about tactics for hunting deep woods
- 56:30Speaker 7: in Pennsylvania for a deer. It was a pretty general question.
- 56:34Speaker 2: I would know more about that than like in the
- 56:37Speaker 2: big Woods.
- 56:37Speaker 3: It's all about here we go.
- 56:38Speaker 4: It's from Ethan.
- 56:40Speaker 3: It's kind of a lot. You gotta work the land
- 56:43Speaker 3: features in that big stuff because it's just you know,
- 56:47Speaker 3: woods forever.
- 56:49Speaker 2: Yeah. I like up where where I hunted Northwest Pa.
- 56:53Speaker 2: Like you're hunting small, like hundred acre chunks of private
- 56:56Speaker 2: and it's not like that big woods is like got
- 56:59Speaker 2: some topography.
- 57:01Speaker 3: Man like yeah, like saddles and pin like if you
- 57:05Speaker 3: can find pinch points bottom stuff like that, and then
- 57:09Speaker 3: find different cover types white oak flats and stuff like
- 57:13Speaker 3: that where they're feeding.
- 57:14Speaker 2: I do think you like, knowing what I know now
- 57:18Speaker 2: about Western hunting, I think there's some stuff you could
- 57:21Speaker 2: apply to those big chunks of like mountainous public land
- 57:26Speaker 2: in Pennsylvania, and a hunt like a Western hunter and
- 57:28Speaker 2: like get in there a long ways and be willing
- 57:32Speaker 2: to pack about a buck out on your back. Like
- 57:35Speaker 2: there's something to be said for like hunting where other
- 57:38Speaker 2: people aren't in Pennsylvania because a lot of it gets
- 57:41Speaker 2: pretty crowded.
- 57:43Speaker 3: Yeah, I think topo map's your best friend and that
- 57:45Speaker 3: kind of stuff.
- 57:46Speaker 7: Carrie asks, would you hunt a burn from last fall
- 57:49Speaker 7: for mule deer or hunt away from the burn?
- 57:53Speaker 2: I think it depends on the burn.
- 57:54Speaker 3: Yeah. I've hunted burns where it burned in the summer and
- 57:57Speaker 3: I was haunting in October. Yeah, there was plenty of
- 58:00Speaker 3: deer and elk in it.
- 58:01Speaker 5: Yeah, you better check it out.
- 58:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean some burn, like it's a real hot
- 58:05Speaker 2: one where everything just gets just like the top soil
- 58:08Speaker 2: gets burnt. Probably pretty tough. But if it's a quick
- 58:11Speaker 2: one that and you get a bunch of new growth, definitely.
- 58:14Speaker 3: I was working on a fire back in my firefighting days.
- 58:17Speaker 3: One time we're cutting a line in to try to
- 58:20Speaker 3: hold hold this one fire from spreading, and out of nowhere,
- 58:26Speaker 3: a whole herd of elk come out of the non
- 58:28Speaker 3: burn stuff and go right up into the fire. I
- 58:31Speaker 3: was like, that's not gonna work out great for him. No,
- 58:33Speaker 3: we never saw him again.
- 58:35Speaker 5: Yeah, they got to deal with that stuff every year.
- 58:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 58:39Speaker 3: I think that's it cool.
- 58:41Speaker 4: It's a good round of questions. Thanks everybody, Go and
- 58:44Speaker 4: wrap it up there.
- 58:45Speaker 2: Sure, all right, folks, that's that's the end of today's show.
- 58:50Speaker 2: Happy Father's Day to everyone. Have a great weekend, get
- 58:53Speaker 2: outside and do something fun.
- 58:55Speaker 3: Thanks a lot, Thanks guys.
- 58:56Speaker 2: Tuning in next week.
