- 0:28What's going on, everybody?
- 0:30Welcome to Sunday Night CrossFit Talk.
- 0:33So I just hit go live,
- 0:35and I got a message back
- 0:36from Twitter that said,
- 0:38unless you have a premium
- 0:39subscription now,
- 0:40you cannot go live on this
- 0:41platform any longer.
- 0:43Wow.
- 0:45So just found that out as we went live,
- 0:48because I just went live on Friday,
- 0:50and it was fine.
- 0:52Yeah.
- 0:52With Bethany, and now today it's not fine.
- 0:57So I got to look into that.
- 0:59So if you were here on
- 1:00Twitter to check us out,
- 1:01you're not going to see us tonight.
- 1:05And you won't even hear that message.
- 1:09So there you go.
- 1:12Kipping It Real is just here
- 1:13for the gators and snakes.
- 1:17All right, so how was your guys' weekend?
- 1:24Mine was good.
- 1:25You were there.
- 1:28I was.
- 1:29Put some miles on the car.
- 1:31Yeah.
- 1:33Before we go into that recap,
- 1:35how about you, Carolyn?
- 1:37Today I went axe throwing
- 1:38for the first time with Lex.
- 1:41So we went to this local bar
- 1:45place that just opened up in her city.
- 1:47It was really fun.
- 1:48She beat me on most of the games,
- 1:50and I don't know if I
- 1:51should be impressed or
- 1:52worried about that.
- 1:54It was really fun.
- 1:55And then we've just been a
- 1:57lot of walks around the
- 1:58neighborhoods and stuff like that.
- 1:59There's like this really
- 2:00nice park that we do.
- 2:01It's like an 800 meter loop
- 2:03with some good shade,
- 2:04which is important in
- 2:06California because it's
- 2:07been like 110 degrees on a
- 2:10lot of the days.
- 2:12But yeah, getting a lot of steps in.
- 2:15We go for like at least a
- 2:16four mile walk often like every morning.
- 2:20And I just think it's crazy how
- 2:22how much you have to walk to
- 2:23get your 10,000 steps.
- 2:26Like that four mile is
- 2:27basically exactly almost 10,000 steps.
- 2:31And it takes us like, I don't know,
- 2:34an hour and a half to an
- 2:35hour 45 often with the
- 2:36doodles just to walk around.
- 2:39So yeah, I mean, I've been getting,
- 2:41my average step count has
- 2:42been like almost like
- 2:4315,000 since being in California.
- 2:48Yeah,
- 2:48we have a loop around our
- 2:49neighborhood that's exactly 800 meters.
- 2:53And that's my walk the dog during work.
- 2:56I just go and do it once.
- 2:58It takes a long time to get to 10,000.
- 3:00And we, uh,
- 3:03we put this challenge for
- 3:04ourselves for the month of
- 3:05July where we're running a mile a day.
- 3:07So we're also trying to get our,
- 3:10our mile wet,
- 3:10whether it's in a wad and
- 3:12it's just accumulating,
- 3:13or we might do intervals or
- 3:15just go for like a mile jog.
- 3:17I don't know if I'll like
- 3:18really test my mile.
- 3:19I've been doing more like
- 3:21jogging around this,
- 3:22the neighborhood for the most part,
- 3:24but I think by the end I'll
- 3:25try to actually test it.
- 3:28That's cool.
- 3:30Well, no, I briefly, we talked last night,
- 3:33Jamie, you're watching the bear.
- 3:36Yes.
- 3:37Yeah.
- 3:37We started that.
- 3:39And what are your impressions of the bear?
- 3:41I like it.
- 3:42It's good.
- 3:43You're right.
- 3:43They're like short, quick,
- 3:46really interesting episodes.
- 3:47It draws you in right away.
- 3:50I'm curious to see where the
- 3:51story goes for sure.
- 3:52We just made it to the second season.
- 3:55Yeah.
- 3:55Second season was amazing.
- 3:56Third season is very
- 3:58artistic and less story movement.
- 4:03And we're not done.
- 4:04We have one episode to go
- 4:05from season three.
- 4:06But it's it's one of my
- 4:09favorite shows from the
- 4:10last five years for sure.
- 4:13Maybe my favorite show from
- 4:14the last five years.
- 4:16But it's it's so good.
- 4:18And I love it.
- 4:19So I'm glad you jumped into that.
- 4:22Good suggestion.
- 4:25Well,
- 4:25I put a ton of miles on my car and
- 4:29went to the beautiful state
- 4:31of Michigan who they need
- 4:34so much road work done.
- 4:37The minute you cross the
- 4:38Ohio border into Michigan,
- 4:41your car just starts bouncing around.
- 4:46You better have good shocks
- 4:47and good tires.
- 4:48That's all I got to say.
- 4:50Yep, so many potholes.
- 4:52That's why we get all the
- 4:53memes that are like, my roads.
- 4:54Like, they're bad.
- 4:56And I don't know.
- 4:59They put tons of funding to it.
- 5:01It doesn't matter.
- 5:01We literally have
- 5:03construction on every single highway.
- 5:04You can't get out of Lansing
- 5:05without touching construction.
- 5:07And...
- 5:09it's, I don't know.
- 5:10It doesn't even help.
- 5:10They're just,
- 5:11maybe the construction is
- 5:12what caused the problems.
- 5:13Then like a whole new set of
- 5:14roads gets just used and
- 5:16destroyed and then come
- 5:18back to that and that gets destroyed.
- 5:20I don't know.
- 5:22Yeah.
- 5:23So we went to Lansing and
- 5:24kept on going all the way
- 5:28out to Lake Michigan.
- 5:29We have Lake Erie here in Ohio.
- 5:32Thought we were cool with that.
- 5:34Man, Lake Michigan smokes Lake Erie.
- 5:39Smokes it.
- 5:40It is so beautiful.
- 5:41It was so gorgeous.
- 5:44We get to Muskegon,
- 5:47and it was miles and miles
- 5:50and miles of beach.
- 5:51Yes.
- 5:53And it was gorgeous.
- 5:56Just driving through there was a treat.
- 5:58Yep.
- 6:02So we went there to the
- 6:06Fresh Coast Fit Fest to
- 6:09hang out with Jamie and her
- 6:10crew as they were competing
- 6:13at the Fit Fest,
- 6:14as well as get some footage of the event,
- 6:18all of that stuff.
- 6:19So I scrambled today.
- 6:21I lost internet for a period of time.
- 6:23But I scrambled today to put
- 6:24together like a minute 30
- 6:26quick highlight reel of event one.
- 6:29This is by no means a finished product.
- 6:31It was just something to
- 6:32share with the crowd here
- 6:34tonight to show where we've
- 6:36been and how cool it is out
- 6:39there on Lake Michigan.
- 6:40So without further ado, I'm going to play.
- 6:43It's a minute 47,
- 6:45and then we'll be right back after that.
- 8:06How'd that one go?
- 8:15I thought it was good.
- 8:17Yeah, it died.
- 8:18A long time in the water.
- 8:19But overall, really good workout fun.
- 8:21Everybody's out there just
- 8:23trying to get it done.
- 8:24Yeah,
- 8:25now you get a little cool off before
- 8:26you go to vent too, huh?
- 8:27That's right.
- 8:36There's Fit Fest or Fresh Coast Fit Fest.
- 8:41Yeah.
- 8:42Just so everyone's clear watching that,
- 8:46everything synchro was at
- 8:47the top because I'm sure if
- 8:49people watch some of that stuff,
- 8:50they'll be like, oh, that was terrible.
- 8:51It was terrible burpees.
- 8:52That was terrible squats.
- 8:54Yeah, it didn't matter.
- 8:55You could squat fast.
- 8:56You could burpee fast as
- 8:57long as you stood tall
- 8:59together on the raft and if
- 9:00you held the dumbbell up.
- 9:02at the top was, um, synchro a little bit,
- 9:05a bit different, but.
- 9:07So let me ask you doing
- 9:10these movements in sand.
- 9:13I watched so many people on
- 9:14thrusters topple over onto
- 9:18their back because they lost,
- 9:21they lost their balance or
- 9:22whatever in the sand.
- 9:23Did you ever feel that way?
- 9:24No, no.
- 9:27Cause you're an athlete.
- 9:30I mean, I feel like for one,
- 9:32I feel like having to like
- 9:35basically hold overhead,
- 9:36like show control overhead
- 9:38to make sure you're all synchro.
- 9:39I guess if you were trying
- 9:40to go really fast and yank it down,
- 9:41you could get wobbly.
- 9:43I was constantly like holding there.
- 9:45So I feel like I was moving
- 9:46slow enough that I didn't feel.
- 9:48And it's actually nice to
- 9:49like dig your feet in like down.
- 9:51So you almost like have like lifters on.
- 9:53Just dig your toes in and
- 9:54then your heels are up.
- 9:55So I feel like once I was
- 9:56where I wanted to be, I was fine.
- 10:00And that workout was however
- 10:03many dumbbell thrusters,
- 10:04single-arm dumbbell thrusters,
- 10:06burpees to start.
- 10:08Then they did the raft thing.
- 10:11Then again with burpees and
- 10:13dumbbell thrusters.
- 10:15Backwards, yep.
- 10:18So.
- 10:18Yep.
- 10:19But it was beautiful.
- 10:20And it was long.
- 10:21It was a long swim.
- 10:24They actually moved the last buoy in.
- 10:28Yeah.
- 10:29before the first group got to it.
- 10:31Cause it was taking so long to go around.
- 10:34Yeah.
- 10:35What was the distance?
- 10:37It was supposed to be 500 meters.
- 10:39Um,
- 10:40I'm guessing it was closer to maybe
- 10:42like 400.
- 10:42Um,
- 10:47But, yeah,
- 10:49that doesn't surprise me that
- 10:50they had to move it in.
- 10:52When they released it, I was like,
- 10:53this is going to take a long time.
- 10:56And it was absolutely perfect conditions.
- 11:00So I'm curious, like,
- 11:03who tested it and what conditions?
- 11:06Because it's usually really choppy.
- 11:09And, I mean, like,
- 11:11I sort of feel like that's
- 11:12why they had to bring in the raft.
- 11:13Because almost every year we
- 11:15have issues with somebody, like,
- 11:17needing to grab onto something,
- 11:18needing something like it can,
- 11:20it's usually freezing and the weather is,
- 11:22it was actually really nice.
- 11:23The water warmed up a lot.
- 11:24So like it didn't take your
- 11:26breath away as much as in
- 11:27past years and you were
- 11:29holding onto that.
- 11:29So you were able to recover, but yeah,
- 11:32you were in the water for like,
- 11:34I don't know.
- 11:34I think the fastest teams
- 11:35were like nine minutes.
- 11:36A lot were like 12 to 14 minutes.
- 11:40Yeah.
- 11:40And it was a,
- 11:41it was a long run down the
- 11:42beach before you enter the,
- 11:45in that deep sand with the
- 11:47raft then you entered and
- 11:49then you went around that
- 11:50500 meters and again they
- 11:52brought in the last buoy to
- 11:53probably make it 450 yeah
- 11:56yeah somewhere around there
- 11:59but yeah um but you could
- 12:02still stand about three
- 12:04quarters of the way out to the buoys yeah
- 12:09Yeah.
- 12:09And that was nice.
- 12:10Like once you were,
- 12:11you were just so tired
- 12:12coming back in that finally
- 12:14when you could put your
- 12:14feet down and just pull that thing,
- 12:16it was way better.
- 12:17Yeah.
- 12:19The fastest technique I saw
- 12:20was two women were on the raft together,
- 12:23each using one arm on each side.
- 12:26And there was the third
- 12:27person was on the back, like a kickboard,
- 12:29just kicking like crazy.
- 12:31Yeah.
- 12:32And they, they,
- 12:33they finished first in the
- 12:34women's heat by a good margin.
- 12:36Um,
- 12:38But yeah, it was awesome to witness.
- 12:41It was a great event.
- 12:43Man, that sand is thick.
- 12:45Like it is a workout alone,
- 12:48just moving up and down
- 12:49through the heats of people.
- 12:51My gosh,
- 12:51my hips and my calves and my
- 12:54ankles on fire.
- 12:56Yeah.
- 12:58My right calf is like the
- 13:00only thing that's pretty sore.
- 13:01So it must have been pushing
- 13:03extra hard with my right leg.
- 13:05But yeah,
- 13:06you walk back and forth on that
- 13:07sand back to your tent,
- 13:08back to like tons of times
- 13:09just to watch a heat go.
- 13:11You're just constantly in that sand.
- 13:15Was it a two-day comp or one?
- 13:18And how many events were there?
- 13:20So it's a one-day comp.
- 13:23There's two days of it
- 13:23because RX is Saturday.
- 13:26Scaled was today.
- 13:27And actually, it was stormy today.
- 13:30It ended up being kind of nice,
- 13:31but Veronica says in here
- 13:32she went over there and
- 13:33they had a red flag out for the water.
- 13:35So it was probably really choppy.
- 13:37Thank God we didn't have to
- 13:38deal with that yesterday.
- 13:39I wonder if they moved the
- 13:40buoys in even more for today.
- 13:42I'm curious if Veronica
- 13:45actually watched the swim
- 13:46event or saw any of that, how that went.
- 13:51Nicole Sherman says,
- 13:52did your team switch
- 13:53positions with the raft in the water?
- 13:56Yes, we did.
- 13:57Well, yeah, we, so we were,
- 13:59we wanted to do two people out front,
- 14:02like almost like
- 14:03one arm and like pulling it
- 14:05and one person at the back.
- 14:06Um,
- 14:06and we did that for at least half the
- 14:08way I'd say about,
- 14:09and then realized that you
- 14:12could see the other teams
- 14:13like ahead of you that were
- 14:14just moving faster with two
- 14:16on or even three on.
- 14:17And we're like, okay,
- 14:18we have to switch something up.
- 14:19So we did switch like three times.
- 14:22Um, I got up like double our
- 14:25double armed while Mel was
- 14:26at the front and Caitlin was at the back.
- 14:28And then Mel and I switched
- 14:29those positions.
- 14:31Caitlin pretty much always
- 14:32stayed at the back kicking.
- 14:35But yeah, we tried a few different things.
- 14:38The funniest conversation I
- 14:39heard all day was
- 14:41While switching positions,
- 14:43you ended up in very
- 14:44precarious situations as well.
- 14:49Butt to face, face to butt,
- 14:51whatever you want to call it.
- 14:53Front to back, things like that.
- 14:57But yeah, that was hilarious.
- 15:01Veronica had me laughing so hard.
- 15:04Only she would be like
- 15:06watching us and kind of like, I mean,
- 15:08she's behind us in the water watching us.
- 15:10Like I, I don't even know.
- 15:14Like I'm just moving along.
- 15:16Like I'm not looking at
- 15:17where I'm at or even paying
- 15:18attention that I'm
- 15:19basically on top of my
- 15:20partner on the raft.
- 15:21Like I don't, it doesn't, I'm just moving.
- 15:23You're there to win.
- 15:27We all know.
- 15:31So that was the first event.
- 15:33The second one was crazy.
- 15:39We've talked about a lot.
- 15:41You've been battling a shoulder injury.
- 15:43You say you can't snatch.
- 15:45You were the strong snatcher on your team.
- 15:48And you snatched 135 power
- 15:51five times fairly easily on
- 15:53sand on a piece of plywood.
- 15:57does that give you more
- 15:58confidence going into the games?
- 16:02No.
- 16:10I mean, I don't,
- 16:11I don't know that that's
- 16:12like a common weight.
- 16:15Like they could pull
- 16:16something like this went to one 55 in it.
- 16:18And there will be people
- 16:19that can hit fit one 55 at the game.
- 16:21So it doesn't matter that I can do one 35.
- 16:23Like,
- 16:26It totally depends on if
- 16:29it's a ladder or how it is.
- 16:31You looked snappier than
- 16:33I've ever seen you snatch.
- 16:36That's good.
- 16:36And it was on a piece of plywood and sand.
- 16:39And you yourself saw Rich snatch,
- 16:42and it was not easy for him
- 16:43in these conditions.
- 16:46Yeah.
- 16:47So kudos to you for that.
- 16:50And then, oh, yeah,
- 16:53we have to talk about this.
- 16:55Plus your judge was dancing
- 16:57while you were doing that.
- 16:58He was getting after it.
- 17:00He was having a good time.
- 17:02Yeah.
- 17:02And we're not talking like
- 17:03keeping it in here.
- 17:04Like he was all over the place dancing.
- 17:09He was having a good time.
- 17:11He was keeping me distracted
- 17:13from the pain I was feeling.
- 17:14So it was good.
- 17:17And then you guys ended up, um,
- 17:22So that, Kenneth,
- 17:25is Jamie's GoFundMe shirt,
- 17:28whatever you want to call it.
- 17:31That is her fundraiser to
- 17:34help her get to the games.
- 17:36There's a t-shirt too.
- 17:38And will Thick Boy be
- 17:39selling it or are you selling it?
- 17:40Yes.
- 17:41Well, yeah.
- 17:43I guess technically I'm selling it.
- 17:47Okay.
- 17:47It looks really good.
- 17:48I love it.
- 17:49Thanks.
- 17:51Did you design it?
- 17:53No, Mark put it together for me.
- 17:55Looks great.
- 17:57He did a good job.
- 18:01So where can they get it?
- 18:04I'll post it, like a picture of it,
- 18:07on my Instagram and
- 18:09Facebook so people can just message me.
- 18:11Okay.
- 18:13Or if you see it here, just message her.
- 18:16Yeah, post in the comments.
- 18:17Like, comment, subscribe.
- 18:20Yeah, do that too.
- 18:21All that stuff.
- 18:23And then you guys ended up podiuming.
- 18:26We did.
- 18:28But even more impressive,
- 18:30you finished seventh overall.
- 18:32Mm-hmm.
- 18:35So not just Masters,
- 18:36but overall seventh place.
- 18:39Yeah.
- 18:40Masters really showed up.
- 18:43The first three teams in
- 18:44Masters were in the top seven overall.
- 18:46Yeah.
- 18:48Yeah, it was a pretty competitive field.
- 18:50I mean, Rich's team was first in Masters,
- 18:53second overall.
- 18:55Not surprising, but yeah,
- 18:57Masters just was competitive this year.
- 19:00That's awesome.
- 19:03Ronica says she needs 10,
- 19:05and I think she can message you tomorrow,
- 19:06probably at the gym.
- 19:07Yeah.
- 19:11So yeah, it does look cool,
- 19:12and I'm definitely getting
- 19:14myself one of them.
- 19:16Speaking of Masters, we'll jump ahead.
- 19:18It became official this week
- 19:20that we got our full access
- 19:22to cover the Masters games
- 19:24behind the scenes.
- 19:25Team is put together, I think.
- 19:28And now we're just ironing
- 19:30out some final details.
- 19:32But super stoked to be able to do that.
- 19:35And now that I'm hearing all
- 19:36the people that are coming,
- 19:37I think we're going to be
- 19:38able to put on a pretty
- 19:39cool little documentary
- 19:42behind the scenes.
- 19:43So I think that's going to be
- 19:48And there's Holly in the chat.
- 19:49And I think we're going to
- 19:51get to meet Holly in person
- 19:52for the first time.
- 19:53She's going to come.
- 19:55We're trying.
- 19:57We're trying.
- 19:58We need our stats and info
- 20:00girl right there on hand to
- 20:03be able to like,
- 20:04give us all the info we need.
- 20:05Right.
- 20:08So she says she hopes so.
- 20:12So.
- 20:12We're super stoked for that.
- 20:16So let's get into the elite
- 20:18CrossFit games.
- 20:21Dave Castro was at it some
- 20:22more this week with all of
- 20:24his interviews.
- 20:24He did take a couple-day break, apparently,
- 20:26to go to Yosemite with his family.
- 20:29But it was back at it,
- 20:30and we had no cell service
- 20:33over the weekend.
- 20:34That's the last thing about Fresh Coast.
- 20:36Yeah.
- 20:37Yeah.
- 20:37Couldn't even communicate
- 20:38with Jamie to let her know
- 20:39we had the table reservation she needed.
- 20:42All that kind of stuff.
- 20:43It was so crazy.
- 20:45So I am behind on these
- 20:47athlete interviews.
- 20:48I think I have three or four to do.
- 20:50I think he's come out with a
- 20:51couple since I even... Lexi
- 20:54Neely just came out before
- 20:55I came downstairs.
- 20:58So, yeah.
- 21:00I've got four to go.
- 21:02BKG, Lexi...
- 21:08I can't remember her name now,
- 21:10but I crammed a few in today.
- 21:12So we know event one.
- 21:14Mm-hmm.
- 21:17Run-swim.
- 21:17Event one is run-swim.
- 21:20And it also came out in some
- 21:21interviews this week that
- 21:22those predictions of
- 21:24distance appear to be right.
- 21:27Dave said that with his own mouth.
- 21:29And if you reverse engineer it,
- 21:31it probably means no fins.
- 21:34Mm-hmm.
- 21:36So, thoughts on the run-swim event.
- 21:40It appears to be a
- 21:41three-and-a-half-mile run,
- 21:43500 to 800-meter swim.
- 21:46I think it's closer to 800
- 21:47for the half-mile, so 800 meters.
- 21:53Do you think it's as much of
- 21:54a run as a swim,
- 21:55or it's a lot more towards the run?
- 21:58I think it's more towards the run.
- 22:02I think...
- 22:09think you can make up a lot
- 22:10of ground on the swim if
- 22:12it's 800 meters that that's
- 22:16uh for these swimmers
- 22:18probably a 13 minute open
- 22:21water swim a 5k is what 17 to 20 minutes
- 22:30if it's a proper 5k they're
- 22:33going to be 19 to 22 at
- 22:35least yeah no no one's
- 22:36running a 17 minute maybe
- 22:38like I don't like no that's
- 22:41not going into a swim I was
- 22:43I was I guess I was
- 22:44referencing last year's ish
- 22:48yeah I think I think most
- 22:49of the girls would be
- 22:52low twenties to around 22 and a half ish.
- 22:56Like Ricky would probably
- 22:57have the fastest 5k.
- 23:00He could probably do a 17.
- 23:01I don't think he will.
- 23:02I mean,
- 23:03he might want to go close to it so
- 23:05that he can get a lead
- 23:06going into the water, knowing that,
- 23:09you know,
- 23:09James Sprague and the cow ski
- 23:12and others will be a great swimmers.
- 23:16Cause I don't think Ricky is
- 23:17known to be like the best swimmer,
- 23:19but he can definitely get
- 23:20into the water first and at least
- 23:22recover probably better than
- 23:24other people can uh spin is
- 23:28the king with research so
- 23:30and he is it kudos to him
- 23:33and apparently he's dead on
- 23:35but I didn't I have not
- 23:36seen anything about this
- 23:37carolyn have you I didn't
- 23:42see that no I haven't seen any of that
- 23:46again there's a handful I
- 23:48have not got to yet um and
- 23:50I went to spin right before
- 23:52we went on here see if
- 23:53anything broke um but yeah
- 23:57I'm all caught up on the
- 23:58interviews except for the
- 24:00the last one that just got
- 24:01posted and nothing was said
- 24:02about two run swim events okay
- 24:10The research also shows there are snakes.
- 24:12I know one person actually
- 24:14went out and did the run
- 24:16and reported back that they
- 24:19saw snakes all over the run path.
- 24:24As an athlete,
- 24:25does that even come into
- 24:26your mind when you're
- 24:27running or swimming?
- 24:33Swimming, yes, it comes into my mind.
- 24:34I've done several triathlons
- 24:36and that kind of stuff.
- 24:40I'm not overly comfortable in the water.
- 24:43Like that, that stuff stresses me out.
- 24:45Like I, I wouldn't just go to a,
- 24:49like a lake like that by
- 24:50myself and go swim around in it.
- 24:53Like I'll sign up for things
- 24:54like triathlons cause
- 24:55there's 50 other people in
- 24:57there with me and hopefully
- 24:59something gets someone else
- 25:00other than me.
- 25:01But like, I don't know.
- 25:03I wouldn't,
- 25:04I wouldn't feel comfortable
- 25:05doing like ocean swims personally.
- 25:08Um,
- 25:09And like, yeah, I don't know.
- 25:10Just, you know, leeches, anything in lakes,
- 25:13like leeches.
- 25:15Yeah.
- 25:18Oh my gosh.
- 25:19All the open water swims I've done.
- 25:20I've never encountered a leech.
- 25:23Well,
- 25:24they're all over our lakes in Michigan.
- 25:25So I'm probably similar to you.
- 25:28Like on the run,
- 25:29I probably wouldn't think about it.
- 25:31Um, if I saw something, just keep going.
- 25:33You're so focused in the water.
- 25:35I'm less comfortable.
- 25:37The fact that you're with a
- 25:38lot of people just.
- 25:39hopefully those creatures
- 25:41stay away from the mass people.
- 25:44Um, yeah, but I mean,
- 25:47I think when you're in the race,
- 25:48you don't think about it
- 25:49and I don't think it'll
- 25:50play a factor at all.
- 25:54Yeah.
- 25:54I, you know,
- 25:55I was talking to Bethany on
- 25:56Friday and she said that
- 25:57usually the animal is more
- 25:58afraid of the human than
- 25:59the human is of the animal.
- 26:01And with all those people, um,
- 26:04most of those animals will
- 26:05be scurrying off to another place.
- 26:09But if you're out there, like you said,
- 26:10Jamie,
- 26:10if you're out there running by yourself,
- 26:12sure,
- 26:12you're going to encounter a lot of that.
- 26:15Yeah.
- 26:16But if it's a mass start of 80 people,
- 26:19you're probably less likely to see that.
- 26:21Absolutely.
- 26:25Do you guys have predictions
- 26:27for male and female in that event?
- 26:32Probably to you.
- 26:37I could see James doing
- 26:40really well in that one.
- 26:41That was a good pick.
- 26:46I want to take Gracie.
- 26:50How is she at running?
- 26:51I don't know.
- 26:55There's been a few
- 26:56interviews where there's
- 26:57some swimmers out there.
- 26:59Kato today was I think trying for
- 27:03like years ago for, uh,
- 27:04Olympic trials in swimming.
- 27:07Um, you obviously have Walton.
- 27:10That's a great swimmer.
- 27:12Like someone like Haley
- 27:13Adams can get into the
- 27:14front with the run and
- 27:15she's always done well.
- 27:16Rolf has always done well in
- 27:17swimming workouts.
- 27:18Same with, um, Emma Lawson.
- 27:21I think like some of like those girls with,
- 27:23with Walton will be up there for sure.
- 27:25Um,
- 27:28on the men's side.
- 27:29I mean, I think Brent always does well,
- 27:30James with that combination, but yeah,
- 27:36it'll be interesting how
- 27:37much each weighs onto the, yeah,
- 27:40onto the event.
- 27:41Well, Pat finished up 20.
- 27:44I think so.
- 27:44I don't think he's that bad of a swimmer.
- 27:46I think like the one year he
- 27:47cramped up and he's had some bad luck.
- 27:49Like the one year was the, uh,
- 27:51the kayak and he just
- 27:53couldn't figure that out.
- 27:54Like he works on his swimming,
- 27:55but I don't think he's like a,
- 27:59like the top end of the field,
- 28:01but he could still, I think do well.
- 28:02He's not a bad runner.
- 28:03He's a good runner.
- 28:04He's a pretty good runner.
- 28:05And I think he'll, he'll be fine.
- 28:08I think so too.
- 28:08I think he'll be top 20.
- 28:09Yeah.
- 28:10I think,
- 28:10I think Sprague has shown that he's,
- 28:14he's the new Brent,
- 28:15like Brent won these events.
- 28:17And now James is just a
- 28:18younger version of that
- 28:20with maybe even better swimming ability.
- 28:23Yeah.
- 28:24um so I like the james pick
- 28:27for that one I would say I
- 28:29want I want to pick gracie
- 28:31but I don't I don't think
- 28:32her tia's run is probably
- 28:35better than gracie's by
- 28:37further by a greater
- 28:39variant than vice versa I
- 28:42agree yeah like I expect
- 28:44like the runners in the
- 28:45front to be like tia hayley adams rolf
- 28:49will be towards the front.
- 28:50I don't think Gracie will be
- 28:52matching their speed going into the water,
- 28:54but she can make up a lot of ground,
- 28:55I'm assuming, in the water,
- 28:56but where will she be entering?
- 28:58That'll be the factor.
- 29:01Yeah, and for that,
- 29:02it's swimming under fatigue,
- 29:04and Tia's going to be fine with that.
- 29:08And Tia actually has, like,
- 29:11of all the swimmers,
- 29:12when you look at her stroke,
- 29:14it is picture-perfect.
- 29:17So I don't think Gracie will
- 29:19be able to make up that much difference.
- 29:24Uh, so, uh,
- 29:26Larry Young says doing anything
- 29:29close to Olympic level
- 29:30makes me think you might be
- 29:31a sneaky pick for the ladies.
- 29:33Yeah, that's what I'd like to,
- 29:36but that's really damn good at swimming.
- 29:42yeah like kato who was a
- 29:45good swimmer like I don't
- 29:46see her being close to them
- 29:48on the run but she may be
- 29:51like I think she'll be
- 29:52she'll have a top half
- 29:53finish in this workout but
- 29:54I don't think she'll
- 29:54threaten for a top three in
- 29:56that workout how are um
- 30:01laura and gabby in the water
- 30:07think they're fine I think
- 30:09they're probably upper
- 30:11upper quarter if I remember
- 30:13like laura does does well
- 30:15in those events yeah um
- 30:19yeah I think they'll be
- 30:21fine I don't think they're
- 30:22gonna win and I don't
- 30:24really know gabby I don't
- 30:25remember her finishes but
- 30:27laura I remember her
- 30:28finishing well and like the
- 30:31lake swims and she's a
- 30:34decent runner oh yeah
- 30:38They'll be fine.
- 30:44Laura was eighth in 2021 with the kayak.
- 30:47I don't know how much she
- 30:48made up maybe on the kayak,
- 30:50but there was a mile swim in that one,
- 30:54so she's got to be a good swimmer.
- 31:00And Gabby, I don't think, did as well.
- 31:02Who was Gabby in 2021?
- 31:05Gabby is 22nd.
- 31:07But again,
- 31:08it's hard to know whether there
- 31:09was the kayak or the swim
- 31:12part because some people
- 31:13really struggled on the
- 31:14kayak and had no idea how to move it.
- 31:18So that one's hard to tell.
- 31:20And then I think the 2022
- 31:22swim event was a lot more
- 31:23dictated by the skier than the swim.
- 31:27Like if you could just
- 31:28survive and make it to the end,
- 31:31it became just the calories thing.
- 31:33I don't think we've had a
- 31:35pure sprint in a while.
- 31:37That's hard to know for the
- 31:39rinse and repeat because
- 31:39there's only five athletes.
- 31:41Again,
- 31:42the echo bike plays a role in that too.
- 31:45No.
- 31:47Swim and stuff was the five people.
- 31:51Rinse and repeat was... I
- 31:56don't know what... That's
- 31:57from our staff and information person.
- 31:59Laura third beat Tia fourth
- 32:01in the rinse and repeat one.
- 32:03was rinse and repeat because
- 32:05it was swim and ski was the
- 32:0622 right that's what it was
- 32:08called yeah yeah and that's
- 32:12more and that's more with
- 32:12the skier yeah that's a
- 32:162022 one with the skier and
- 32:17then swimming stuff is the
- 32:19one at the 2020 games with
- 32:22five athletes which laura wasn't there
- 32:27Okay.
- 32:29Rinse and repeat was the swim ski.
- 32:31Yeah.
- 32:32Yeah.
- 32:32So that would have been,
- 32:33she got third because of
- 32:34the rower or the ski.
- 32:36Yeah.
- 32:36Yeah.
- 32:37I mean, she's probably a good swimmer too.
- 32:39Like, yeah, but not as elite as.
- 32:44Yeah.
- 32:44I think she's upper, upper tier swimmer.
- 32:46Just not Tia Gracie swimmer.
- 32:51So there we go.
- 32:54Um,
- 32:54the other thing we learned this week is
- 32:55Chad has event seven right
- 32:56before the cut.
- 32:58Uh,
- 32:58so you're going to be doing step ups
- 33:00for your life.
- 33:01That is crazy.
- 33:02I don't, I mean,
- 33:08I kind of like it cause
- 33:09he's making it matter.
- 33:10Like he's going to make them push it.
- 33:12Um, but man, Oh,
- 33:15you're going to be sore the
- 33:15next day pushing that hard.
- 33:18And we don't know what the twist is.
- 33:20Like we don't know.
- 33:24So,
- 33:25and Dave did say that the twist is not
- 33:27the fact that it's the
- 33:29workout before the cut.
- 33:31Cause someone asked if that was the twist,
- 33:32whether it was just the
- 33:33workout before the cut and he said, no,
- 33:35that's not the, the, um, the twist,
- 33:38but didn't say whether
- 33:39there was an additional movement,
- 33:41whether the twist is just
- 33:42having multiple boxes and
- 33:44moving your way down or step overs.
- 33:47Um,
- 33:47so we still don't have that information,
- 33:49but.
- 33:52I like the fact that it's before the cuts.
- 33:53I think it puts pressure on the athletes.
- 33:57And everyone will get to do it.
- 33:59Yeah.
- 34:02Is it Kyron Souza?
- 34:05His first name.
- 34:08He did it.
- 34:10Like him and Bruno did it recently.
- 34:16Uh,
- 34:17and they did the whole thing and
- 34:18apparently they went pretty hard at it.
- 34:21And he said that it was fine doing it.
- 34:24It was a couple of days
- 34:24later that he really hurt.
- 34:27Well,
- 34:28they only have one day to work out
- 34:30after it.
- 34:31And like,
- 34:31if you're going to be most sore on Monday,
- 34:33it is what it is.
- 34:34You just got to get through Sunday.
- 34:37Yeah.
- 34:38So what do you guys think
- 34:38about the outlandish, uh,
- 34:41comments of people saying
- 34:42they should cut it in the
- 34:43middle of like do the cuts
- 34:45in the middle of the
- 34:46workout or if you're the
- 34:48fastest to a certain like
- 34:51if you're the fastest 10 to
- 34:52500 you get to stop and no
- 34:57I don't I think you have to
- 34:58complete it yeah if you're
- 34:59going to do this workout
- 35:00everyone needs to do all
- 35:01thousand step ups like
- 35:02everyone has to and I
- 35:04realize some people are
- 35:04going to be done but like
- 35:06you can't I everyone just
- 35:09needs to do it all
- 35:12Vi asks,
- 35:14are we hoping that it's stepovers or no?
- 35:18I don't think it's going to be stepovers.
- 35:20I think CrossFit is
- 35:22old-fashioned Dave saying,
- 35:26we saw what you did in quarterfinals.
- 35:28We penalized you for it.
- 35:30Now we're going to put it in
- 35:31the games to make sure you
- 35:32do it as we prescribed.
- 35:34Mm-hmm.
- 35:36I just think it's a
- 35:37completely different workout.
- 35:38If it was,
- 35:39if it's step overs a hundred percent,
- 35:41like that extension at the
- 35:42top of the box is way
- 35:46different and uses your legs a lot more.
- 35:51Um,
- 35:52obviously it's a lot easier to judge the,
- 35:56um, the step overs,
- 35:58but I have a hard time
- 36:01thinking that it would
- 36:01change to that point of doing a,
- 36:04the full movement, like different, um,
- 36:07but even just look at some
- 36:09people practicing the step ups,
- 36:10like they have a soft knee,
- 36:12like they're stepping up
- 36:13and you watch a lot of the
- 36:14videos of the athletes and
- 36:16they're standing up on the one hip,
- 36:17but their other knee is
- 36:18still kind of soft every single time.
- 36:22And they should know right
- 36:23now that you have to
- 36:24clearly stand up and you
- 36:25can't be leaning on one side.
- 36:26And almost all the videos
- 36:27that I'm watching of the athletes,
- 36:28they're still tapping and being soft.
- 36:30So I don't know what they're
- 36:31going to do because they're
- 36:33still not doing a step up
- 36:34correctly in my opinion.
- 36:37Yes,
- 36:37Sarah Cooper says so many athletes
- 36:38posting them doing step-ups
- 36:40now and still not hitting full extension.
- 36:43But isn't it typical, Dave,
- 36:45that he would look at a
- 36:46problem instead of saying, hey,
- 36:48we're going to fix it by
- 36:50making it easier.
- 36:51No,
- 36:52we're going to run into the problem and
- 36:54we're going to do it till
- 36:55we get it right.
- 36:59Yeah, I could see that mindset.
- 37:00Yeah.
- 37:04Larry Young said, personally,
- 37:05I thought it was boring,
- 37:06but with cuts after now,
- 37:08I feel like that's enough,
- 37:09even without a twist.
- 37:12Yeah,
- 37:12who's going to want to leave the
- 37:13stadium at that point when
- 37:16you're kind of waiting to
- 37:17see which athlete is going
- 37:18to be falling behind and
- 37:20possibly losing a lot of
- 37:21points or getting cuts?
- 37:22You're not going to want to not tune in.
- 37:25I mean,
- 37:26you might want to tune in at the end,
- 37:27but still,
- 37:28I think it engages more of the
- 37:31fans to want to stay and watch.
- 37:33knowing that there's a lot
- 37:34on the line in that particular workout.
- 37:38There was a point in one of
- 37:40the interviews where he
- 37:41said that they try to make
- 37:44everything
- 37:45spectator-friendly at the games
- 37:46by the way they move things,
- 37:48but sometimes the test is
- 37:51more important than being
- 37:52spectator-friendly.
- 37:55And he said, so in small instances,
- 38:00you have to do the test the
- 38:01way you need to do the test.
- 38:05And I think that that's what Chad is.
- 38:07He wants a mental test.
- 38:09You put it by the cuts.
- 38:10It eats even a bigger mental test.
- 38:12Who's willing to die for
- 38:15points on that last event
- 38:16before the cuts.
- 38:18And it's just grunt work.
- 38:19It's not,
- 38:20it's not about technique or skill
- 38:22or who's willing to lay it down.
- 38:24So.
- 38:27Yeah.
- 38:31Wouldn't it be crazy if the twist was,
- 38:32there is no twist.
- 38:38I don't,
- 38:39I think there's going to be something.
- 38:40I don't think he would do that.
- 38:41I don't think he would say
- 38:42that and not have something.
- 38:45Yeah.
- 38:47You know, Dave.
- 38:48Yeah.
- 38:51So, uh, did you see the,
- 38:54the one interview where
- 38:55someone asked him if he was
- 38:56going to bring back the cornrows?
- 38:58No.
- 38:59And he said that he decided that one,
- 39:02when he turned 40,
- 39:04he was done with those types of things.
- 39:07That as a 40-year-old and up,
- 39:09you have to just be more
- 39:11serious and move on.
- 39:15And I thought that was very interesting.
- 39:24So...
- 39:27Did you see the comment
- 39:28about the marathon?
- 39:28It was on the BKG interview
- 39:30and I haven't seen the full thing yet,
- 39:31but I just saw the spin
- 39:33version of it where BKG
- 39:35said that the marathon row
- 39:36was the worst event he ever
- 39:38did at the games.
- 39:40And Dave said that, well,
- 39:43if I'm still in this position,
- 39:45it is coming back at some point.
- 39:49That's funny.
- 39:51You missed that one.
- 39:51You weren't there yet, right?
- 39:53Carolyn, or were you?
- 39:54No, I had missed out.
- 39:56That year was very close to qualifying.
- 39:58And when I saw it,
- 39:59I was at the event watching.
- 40:01And I was like, oh, man,
- 40:02I'm so glad I'm not doing it.
- 40:05You know, I wanted to qualify.
- 40:07Seeing that first day,
- 40:08that was a hard first day of the games.
- 40:12Yeah.
- 40:15Yeah.
- 40:15Crazy.
- 40:18And now everybody's going to
- 40:20have to train that row
- 40:21every year because he said
- 40:22it's coming back at some point.
- 40:24So gross.
- 40:27It's like my butt can't sit
- 40:28on a rower for that long.
- 40:31I do a 10K rarely,
- 40:33and it hurts me so much
- 40:34just to sit down the entire time.
- 40:37Yeah, the most I've ever done was a 10K.
- 40:39I can't imagine quadrupling
- 40:42that plus some.
- 40:44I've done the half before in
- 40:472013 when that was programmed.
- 40:50One girl from my previous
- 40:52gym in my hometown was
- 40:53doing the half marathon row.
- 40:57She ended up quitting
- 40:58halfway and I just kept going.
- 41:00So I have done the half one
- 41:02and that was brutal.
- 41:06The first time I did a 5k,
- 41:07like I had blisters all over my fingers.
- 41:10Yeah.
- 41:11Yeah.
- 41:12Yeah.
- 41:13I can't even imagine 40,000,
- 41:17whatever it is.
- 41:20Crazy.
- 41:22I liked Emma McQuaid's question about,
- 41:25do you think that we're overtraining?
- 41:32And his response is,
- 41:33I absolutely think you're overtraining.
- 41:35That when you're training
- 41:36five to six hours a day,
- 41:38there's no day at the games
- 41:39that is five to six hours.
- 41:43And I saw him say in other interviews,
- 41:44like the most total workout
- 41:47time you're getting,
- 41:47unless there's like a
- 41:49marathon row or chat, is like an hour.
- 41:53And it's broken up into like three events.
- 42:00There's always like a 45-minute workout,
- 42:04almost always, whether it's the bike,
- 42:07a run, a longer run.
- 42:10I feel like there's always
- 42:10one workout that's 45 minutes.
- 42:13But I just feel like people
- 42:15exaggerate how much that
- 42:16they're actually training.
- 42:17Like be like, Oh,
- 42:17I'm training six to eight hours,
- 42:19but it's like,
- 42:20they're at the gym for like that long.
- 42:22They're warming up.
- 42:23Some of them are chilling on a foam roller,
- 42:26having a chat.
- 42:27Like they're not actually
- 42:28working out for like eight
- 42:31hours and they say it like that.
- 42:32So people have this
- 42:33perception that they're
- 42:34training for six to eight hours.
- 42:37But I think in reality,
- 42:39most athletes are like pure,
- 42:41like whether they're lifting,
- 42:43cardio or like gymnastics
- 42:45skills or med cons,
- 42:46like let's call it two to three hours.
- 42:50So, um, I, you know, and,
- 42:53and people that have other
- 42:55jobs condense it into like,
- 42:58let's call it two to four hours maybe.
- 43:00Um,
- 43:00while people that don't have jobs and
- 43:02can be at the gym all day,
- 43:04just stretch it out so much
- 43:05and get work done and physio work,
- 43:09et cetera, and cold tubs.
- 43:11And they all just say that
- 43:12it's their training day, which it is,
- 43:14but I don't think they're
- 43:15actually training for eight hours.
- 43:17That's my opinion, unless I'm wrong.
- 43:22I just don't think that they are.
- 43:24I can't remember how Emma McQuaid put it,
- 43:26but it was like she doesn't
- 43:28just train to train anymore.
- 43:30She doesn't want to do trash training.
- 43:33I can't remember the term she used.
- 43:36Trash volume.
- 43:38Junk volume, yeah.
- 43:41Everything is intentional.
- 43:43Everything is for a purpose.
- 43:44And each workout has a purpose.
- 43:47And she knows what that purpose is.
- 43:50Do you feel that's how you train?
- 43:57I mean, I feel like sometimes there's just,
- 44:02I feel like some of the
- 44:03stuff is just volume to get in volume,
- 44:06but I,
- 44:06but I also need volume and I need to like,
- 44:10I need to feel like I did
- 44:15three hard workouts and I'm,
- 44:17I know I'm going to be sore
- 44:18tomorrow and I need to feel
- 44:19what that's going to feel like.
- 44:20So I don't know.
- 44:21I think the purpose sometimes is,
- 44:23is for the volume.
- 44:27But if it's to build capacity,
- 44:31then it still has a purpose.
- 44:34Yeah.
- 44:35Yeah.
- 44:36The example she uses,
- 44:37I don't do sandbag cleans
- 44:39just to do sandbag cleans.
- 44:42There has to be a purpose to it.
- 44:45I do a monostructural
- 44:49conditioning every day.
- 44:50I have a four-week
- 44:52weightlifting cycle that's
- 44:53a progressive overload
- 44:54that's the same weightlifting cycle
- 44:56stuff for let's let's say a
- 44:57week and then I just
- 44:58progressed for the four
- 44:59weeks like I start light on
- 45:01week one which is almost
- 45:02like a deload and I
- 45:03normally have a couple
- 45:05metcons you call it um and
- 45:07some accessory and I would
- 45:08say that like there's no
- 45:11junk volume everything's
- 45:12intentional I try to hit
- 45:13essentially every movement once a week
- 45:16indifferent uh stimulus so
- 45:18it's like if I don't if I
- 45:19don't feel like um I'm
- 45:21gonna hit this piece with
- 45:23intention I just don't do
- 45:25it um and I'll be like okay
- 45:27well which movement did I
- 45:29skip this week I'll make
- 45:30sure that I don't skip on
- 45:31that movement you know two
- 45:32weeks in a row or I'll put
- 45:34that piece into another
- 45:35part of the week um just so
- 45:38I don't get burnt out or
- 45:40just doing things just to
- 45:41do things and go through
- 45:42the motion so I would say
- 45:44that I am intentional in
- 45:45in my training and I don't
- 45:47train as much as, um, my competitors.
- 45:50I take two full rest days a
- 45:51week for the last few years.
- 45:53Um, and I listened to my body very well.
- 46:00Yeah,
- 46:00she said on our interview with her
- 46:02and in this interview with
- 46:03Dave that with the injury
- 46:05she sustained last year,
- 46:07she had to start from scratch.
- 46:10And it was a full rebuild in
- 46:11the offseason.
- 46:12And she learned so much from
- 46:14that that her training has
- 46:16changed now that she's gone
- 46:18through that with much more intention.
- 46:22And she says her body feels
- 46:23so much better this year
- 46:25than it has in years past.
- 46:27So I think she's being very
- 46:28critical of her own program.
- 46:30And not necessarily saying
- 46:32that out to the world,
- 46:33but that she needed to be
- 46:35more intentional with what she was doing.
- 46:41And Dave talked about it.
- 46:42I don't know with who,
- 46:43but referencing Brent and talking about,
- 46:47again, volume and how, you know,
- 46:49a lot of people talk about
- 46:50when they're at the games, you know,
- 46:52they're injured and they're
- 46:53broken and stuff like that.
- 46:54And that's not the case for
- 46:56like all the athletes.
- 46:57And there are athletes that are, you know,
- 47:00doing it the right way or
- 47:02not that it's the right way,
- 47:03but like really listening
- 47:04to their bodies and, uh,
- 47:06not pushing through pain or
- 47:08anything like that.
- 47:10Um,
- 47:11so I think this idea that everyone has
- 47:14so much volume and is all
- 47:16broken puts this person
- 47:17like this perception that, you know,
- 47:20all the games athletes are
- 47:21just dealing with stuff,
- 47:22which I don't know.
- 47:23I never went to the game
- 47:25necessarily like injured or,
- 47:27have any like nagging things.
- 47:28Cause I feel like I listened
- 47:29to my body very well and
- 47:31I'm sure plenty of other
- 47:33athletes are like that as well too.
- 47:34Um,
- 47:36so I think I talked about this with the
- 47:38teenagers that I was on a call with, um,
- 47:40in my little group of mentor mentorship,
- 47:43um, and just about, you know,
- 47:45listening to your body and
- 47:46not feeling like you have
- 47:47to do the full volume of, um,
- 47:50things that are,
- 47:50that they're getting
- 47:51programmed from their
- 47:53programmers that they're following.
- 47:55Cause it can be a lot.
- 47:56So.
- 47:57I think that's really
- 47:58important to just be in
- 47:59tune with little stuff so
- 48:01that it doesn't become a chronic injury.
- 48:05I was wondering if anybody
- 48:06else caught this.
- 48:08Vi says it was a little wild
- 48:11to hear Dave call out
- 48:12proven specifically for overtraining,
- 48:15given that was the
- 48:16accusation from the
- 48:17athletes who left them last year.
- 48:21Yeah.
- 48:21I don't think it was an
- 48:22intentional call out.
- 48:23I think it was just Dave was like,
- 48:24I was at proven last year
- 48:26and couldn't believe the
- 48:28amount of training they were doing,
- 48:31but it does line up with
- 48:34things that were coming out
- 48:35from other athletes about
- 48:36the programming at proven and why,
- 48:40why they left.
- 48:45The last thing I wanted to
- 48:46touch on with the
- 48:47interviews is Victoria Campos.
- 48:49And her question to Dave was,
- 48:53every year when the semifinals,
- 48:54you get a free L1 or a free L2.
- 48:58And she has her L3 and has
- 49:01completed every online
- 49:02course that's available.
- 49:04And she asked Dave, could she get her L4?
- 49:09And Dave said, absolutely.
- 49:11Let's do it.
- 49:13And he asked her,
- 49:15would you be interested in
- 49:18trying out for the seminar staff?
- 49:21And she said, sure.
- 49:23And he said, then we're going to do both.
- 49:26And I thought, wow,
- 49:28that was a really cool
- 49:29interaction that happened
- 49:31on an interview.
- 49:34Because there was a lot of
- 49:36stuff out there that a lot
- 49:37of the athletes that are in
- 49:39the games don't have their
- 49:40L1s or anything like that.
- 49:44And in my interview with Saxon this week,
- 49:46he talked about that if
- 49:48you're competing in a sport
- 49:50and there's a class to
- 49:51learn about the movements
- 49:52and the movement standards,
- 49:54wouldn't you want to know
- 49:55that information to make
- 49:58you better at the thing you do?
- 50:02So I wanted to get your thoughts on that.
- 50:04And then Mike Halpin put out,
- 50:06I think today,
- 50:07on his known and knowable
- 50:10Instagram account,
- 50:11why don't we give badges to
- 50:14put on the jerseys of
- 50:15athletes who have their L1, L2,
- 50:17L3 badges?
- 50:21Or they're a country
- 50:22champion or they're whatever.
- 50:24And instead of just having a
- 50:27leader's jersey or the
- 50:29medals for champions, why not have L1, L2,
- 50:32L3 as an option to put on
- 50:34the jerseys and celebrate
- 50:36those athletes that
- 50:37actually have those things?
- 50:39That's an awesome idea.
- 50:40Yeah, I like that as well.
- 50:45Yeah, he has a couple of recommendations.
- 50:46So I actually could pull it up.
- 50:48I think I have it close.
- 50:51Like I get that they expire, um, over time,
- 50:55but I still think that
- 50:56while you're at the games that year,
- 50:58you still held, you know, that credential,
- 51:01um,
- 51:02which I think would be a cool thing to
- 51:03add.
- 51:10I mean,
- 51:10it would probably make some people
- 51:11who maybe would consider
- 51:13letting it lapse would go
- 51:16renew it to make sure they
- 51:17get that again on their Jersey.
- 51:26I'm having a hard time finding it.
- 51:28Of course.
- 51:40Okay.
- 51:41We'll do that another time.
- 51:42That's a good idea, though.
- 51:44I love it.
- 51:51but yeah, it was, it was super cool.
- 51:52And he had,
- 51:53he had like pictures and
- 51:54mock-ups and things like that as well.
- 51:57They kind of, uh, showed all that.
- 52:01So, uh,
- 52:03Holly said sex interview was so good.
- 52:06And Larry Young said badge idea rocks.
- 52:10Uh, so yeah.
- 52:12So there's that.
- 52:14So now we're going to get
- 52:14into the fun part of the show, hopefully.
- 52:17I was watching a podcast,
- 52:19a swimming podcast this week,
- 52:21not CrossFit.
- 52:23And they were talking about,
- 52:24if you don't know,
- 52:25there's a rivalry between
- 52:26the United States and
- 52:27Australia when it comes to
- 52:30swimming at the international level.
- 52:33They're the two best
- 52:34swimming countries in the
- 52:36world and have been for many, many years.
- 52:41A few years back,
- 52:42one overzealous fan brought
- 52:44a cowbell to a swimming
- 52:47meet that was pro-US and
- 52:50would ring it all the time.
- 52:53There was an interview done
- 52:54with an Australian swimmer
- 52:56who talked about how much
- 52:58she hated the cowbell and
- 53:00wants to make the U.S.
- 53:05basically eat it and take
- 53:07them out at either World
- 53:08Championships or the Olympics.
- 53:11I'm paraphrasing big time.
- 53:14so some of the U S swimmers
- 53:16were talking about it
- 53:17because NBC is taking that
- 53:20rivalry and promoting the
- 53:22hell out of it as the
- 53:24Olympics are going to only a month away.
- 53:26And it's the big rivalry, right?
- 53:28And swimming will be
- 53:29probably the main event for
- 53:30the first week of the games.
- 53:32Yeah.
- 53:33So I on this podcast,
- 53:36it was two former swimmers
- 53:38talking about how, yes,
- 53:40there is a rivalry between
- 53:42them and Australia,
- 53:43but it's a friendly rivalry.
- 53:44They're actually friends
- 53:45away from the pool and they
- 53:48hang out together a lot
- 53:49because they're in the same
- 53:50circles and they do the same things.
- 53:54And it's not as heated.
- 53:56And the person actually made
- 53:56the comment didn't even
- 53:57make the Olympics from Australia.
- 54:00So she's not even there to like represent.
- 54:02Right.
- 54:06So my question is,
- 54:10is it better when your
- 54:11sport has these rivalries and is it,
- 54:15is it okay for media to
- 54:17pump them up to try to get viewership?
- 54:22Oh, sure.
- 54:22I mean, that's the exciting,
- 54:24that's the exciting stuff.
- 54:25People, people love that.
- 54:27They, um, whether it's, whether it's like,
- 54:35I don't know.
- 54:35I mean,
- 54:36you got to have either a hero villain.
- 54:39Yeah.
- 54:39Some type of rivalry.
- 54:41That's, that's the exciting stuff.
- 54:43You want to cheer some,
- 54:44you want to cheer for the
- 54:44underdog to take somebody down.
- 54:48And yeah,
- 54:49the media companies should
- 54:50absolutely pump that up.
- 54:52Yeah.
- 54:52I mean, it's in every sport.
- 54:53There's rivalries like in hockey right now,
- 54:57let's say Angel Reese
- 54:58versus Caitlin Clark for
- 54:59the rookie of the year.
- 55:01And people are building up
- 55:02like they hate each other.
- 55:04Whether the media,
- 55:05you know,
- 55:06pumps up the Australians or USA
- 55:08for the swimming.
- 55:09You know,
- 55:09I think it's good for viewership
- 55:11in the end,
- 55:12the more that they can talk about it,
- 55:14the better it is.
- 55:15So no, I like it.
- 55:18Do you think that,
- 55:19do you think CrossFit's
- 55:20fallen short on the Laura
- 55:22Tia robbery for this year?
- 55:27Yeah.
- 55:32They could do more.
- 55:33I mean,
- 55:33they tried doing something with
- 55:34Roman and Jeff and that was a fail.
- 55:39But they could definitely pump up.
- 55:42Now,
- 55:43I don't think they have to go about it
- 55:45like they hate each other.
- 55:46I don't think it's about
- 55:47hating each other.
- 55:48I think they have a lot of
- 55:49respect for each other.
- 55:50I think everyone in our
- 55:50sport has a lot of respect
- 55:51for each other and the work
- 55:53that everyone does and puts in.
- 55:56But I think they could play on some of the
- 56:01Some of the rivalries.
- 56:02I mean,
- 56:02we're seeing some of the fun like
- 56:06male side developing right now.
- 56:09It would be nice to have
- 56:10something like that on the
- 56:11female side just to root for.
- 56:15But on the male side,
- 56:16they're doing it themselves.
- 56:18Yeah.
- 56:19Well, Laura's not doing it.
- 56:20Laura's like putting that stuff out there.
- 56:23Her posts have been.
- 56:24So I think she's trying.
- 56:27Somebody's got to pick it up.
- 56:28Coming to win.
- 56:29Yeah.
- 56:30And she has stated that you
- 56:32could clip that stuff together.
- 56:35You could clip a thing of Tia working out,
- 56:37getting better,
- 56:38hurt the names of her videos,
- 56:41like making the comeback,
- 56:43coming to take it over.
- 56:45Right.
- 56:46Laura saying,
- 56:47I'm coming to win regardless
- 56:49of who's there.
- 56:50CrossFit should be taking
- 56:51the Dallin Pepper Roman
- 56:53comments from semifinals,
- 56:55clipping them up, and using them to say,
- 56:57the CrossFit Games are coming August 7th.
- 57:01Watch Dallin and Roman go head-to-head.
- 57:06They don't do any of that.
- 57:08And you just mentioned it, Carolyn,
- 57:10every other sport.
- 57:12The Angel Reese-Caitlin one
- 57:14is huge right now.
- 57:17I mean,
- 57:18people take it to a level sometimes
- 57:20I feel like they shouldn't
- 57:21take it for some of the rivalries.
- 57:24But in general, it's great for the sport.
- 57:27Like here we have that it's not necessary.
- 57:29I don't think it's always necessary,
- 57:31but you could still play it
- 57:33like they each have their
- 57:35skills and just showcase
- 57:37how good these two are.
- 57:38And these are the, you know,
- 57:39the top two in our sports
- 57:40going to be going head to head in August,
- 57:43you know, August 8th to 11th.
- 57:45And you promote, you know,
- 57:46our top athletes like that
- 57:48for the head to head.
- 57:48But I still want to see, you know,
- 57:50the other athletes get developed.
- 57:52And yeah, any rivalries,
- 57:54I think it's good.
- 57:56back and forth at rogue you
- 57:57could use that footage to
- 57:59make tia won this event
- 58:02laura won this event back
- 58:04and forth they went you
- 58:06know there's so many little
- 58:08things they could have put
- 58:09together to promote this
- 58:11crossfit games there's
- 58:13still time not much
- 58:18So now my contention is that
- 58:20people outside of CrossFit
- 58:22that are running events are
- 58:23doing a better job of that.
- 58:25We've talked about how
- 58:26Europe is so intense at
- 58:27semifinals because you get
- 58:29to root for your country.
- 58:31So it has been announced that this year,
- 58:33SoCal,
- 58:35Guadalupalooza is doing a North
- 58:37America versus the world.
- 58:40Fit Fest just announced this
- 58:42week they are doing Europe
- 58:44versus the world.
- 58:48Those entities see the value
- 58:51in having rivalries and country pride,
- 58:59right?
- 58:59Continent pride,
- 59:00whatever you want to call it.
- 59:05What do you think about
- 59:06those events doing that thing,
- 59:07doing that?
- 59:10Oh, it'll draw more eyes for sure.
- 59:13Yeah.
- 59:14I mean, we all,
- 59:14we only see them in like
- 59:16compete individually throughout the year.
- 59:17So it's a chance for
- 59:20different athletes to team
- 59:21up and whether you're
- 59:23rooting for team North
- 59:25America or team world or team Europe,
- 59:28it just allows, you know,
- 59:30something that they have in
- 59:30common and they become a team.
- 59:33And it's just something that
- 59:34you don't see.
- 59:35We have the CrossFit Games teams,
- 59:37but obviously we know that
- 59:40these type of showcases would like have
- 59:43great athletes individual
- 59:44athletes going team and
- 59:45it's just a higher level in
- 59:47general yeah like sarah
- 59:51says I hopefully they
- 59:52broadcast fit fest this
- 59:54time yeah and I i and when
- 59:59I was talking to ariel she
- 1:00:00said at fit fest there was
- 1:00:01no like it was not supposed
- 1:00:03to be competition but every
- 1:00:05time they go three two one
- 1:00:07everybody wanted to win
- 1:00:08there was strategy on every workout
- 1:00:11They were all trying their
- 1:00:13hardest because they're competitors.
- 1:00:17And I hope it's a broadcast.
- 1:00:21I hope SoCal Waterpalooza
- 1:00:23does a great job.
- 1:00:24The cool thing about it only
- 1:00:25being two teams is it
- 1:00:27should be very easy to view
- 1:00:29the competition.
- 1:00:32And the different format for each event,
- 1:00:35two-on-two, one-on-one, eight-on-eight,
- 1:00:40it's going to be a fun thing to watch,
- 1:00:42I hope.
- 1:00:44And hopefully spurs some new
- 1:00:46types of competition.
- 1:00:53But I also think this is why
- 1:00:54teams don't necessarily need to separate
- 1:00:57from the CrossFit Games to
- 1:00:58allow these type of
- 1:00:59competitions to do these
- 1:01:00exhibitions or these
- 1:01:02showcases of these athletes
- 1:01:04on super teams.
- 1:01:06Like I don't necessarily
- 1:01:07think that CrossFit needs
- 1:01:08to run another competition.
- 1:01:13Unless they would bring the
- 1:01:14teams back with the masters
- 1:01:15and the teenagers and
- 1:01:17that's a whole package and
- 1:01:19you have a lot of people in
- 1:01:20the stands now going to see
- 1:01:22their families.
- 1:01:23you could do something like
- 1:01:24that but if all of them are
- 1:01:25going to get separated I
- 1:01:26don't think that's the
- 1:01:27right move agree agree
- 1:01:32speaking of which we did
- 1:01:33have a comment this week in
- 1:01:34the youtube comments that
- 1:01:36when are we going to start
- 1:01:37interviewing masters
- 1:01:38athletes one we have one on
- 1:01:41this show every week two we
- 1:01:45I did an interview with
- 1:01:46rudy and lynette burger a week ago
- 1:01:49We have one scheduled for
- 1:01:50this week with a
- 1:01:52mother-daughter who both
- 1:01:53qualified for the CrossFit Games.
- 1:01:56It'll be this Thursday and they're,
- 1:01:59they're not able to attend
- 1:02:00each other's event because
- 1:02:01they're on the same weekend.
- 1:02:04And so we're going to talk
- 1:02:04about what that means to them.
- 1:02:06And that'll be this Thursday.
- 1:02:09So please check that out.
- 1:02:10So we'll have a teen athlete
- 1:02:11and a master's athlete.
- 1:02:13And the plan was this will
- 1:02:15be this coming week is the
- 1:02:16last week I'm doing elite
- 1:02:18interviews for the games as
- 1:02:20we're getting too close to
- 1:02:22to interrupt training
- 1:02:22schedules going into the games.
- 1:02:25So it'll switch over to
- 1:02:27coaches and Masters athletes after that,
- 1:02:30leading up to the Masters CrossFit Games.
- 1:02:34So just to explain that to
- 1:02:35everybody of the plan coming up.
- 1:02:40So one of the other
- 1:02:42interviews that Dave Castro did,
- 1:02:44he was schooling somebody
- 1:02:46on James Fitzgerald.
- 1:02:50and uh the guy who did the
- 1:02:51first butterfly pull-up and
- 1:02:53was in uh every every
- 1:02:56second counts shoot he
- 1:03:01trains out of cross at
- 1:03:01calgary or something like
- 1:03:02that yeah I forgot the name
- 1:03:04yeah I think it was in the
- 1:03:06hattie canyo interview
- 1:03:07actually uh because she
- 1:03:09lives in the area where
- 1:03:11fitzgerald and this guy
- 1:03:13came from and uh and he
- 1:03:16said if there was a crossfit hall of fame
- 1:03:18those two would be in it
- 1:03:21because of their
- 1:03:22contribution to the sport
- 1:03:23okay so I put into our
- 1:03:26notes a question to you two
- 1:03:28is if there was a crossfit
- 1:03:31hall of fame and you had to
- 1:03:34start it with three men and
- 1:03:36three women now all other
- 1:03:39sports hall of fames you
- 1:03:40have to be retired
- 1:03:43to be eligible to go into
- 1:03:45the Hall of Fame.
- 1:03:46And my caveat to that is
- 1:03:48Masters competition does not count.
- 1:03:52So you just have to be
- 1:03:53retired from elite
- 1:03:54individual competition to be eligible.
- 1:03:58Who are your three men and
- 1:04:00your three women?
- 1:04:04Well, I think we all have Matt and Rich,
- 1:04:06right?
- 1:04:08No?
- 1:04:10Carolyn doesn't.
- 1:04:12I do have Matt and Rich.
- 1:04:13Yeah.
- 1:04:18I forgot about Matt, but he retired.
- 1:04:22I will add him to mine.
- 1:04:24One time championship she forgot.
- 1:04:28Yes.
- 1:04:28Matt and Rich.
- 1:04:29Yes.
- 1:04:31My third guy is Scott Panczyk.
- 1:04:40Over Ben Smith.
- 1:04:42Yep.
- 1:04:42I don't feel like Ben's
- 1:04:45actually retired yet.
- 1:04:47Yeah,
- 1:04:48I actually thought of Ben Smith and
- 1:04:49then said I had to
- 1:04:49disqualify him because he
- 1:04:51competed in individual semis this year.
- 1:04:53Yes.
- 1:04:54I have Mikko Salo.
- 1:04:55I think he changed the game
- 1:04:57a lot for the Europeans to
- 1:05:00enter the sport and train.
- 1:05:03And Jason Kalipa.
- 1:05:08Because you forgot Matt.
- 1:05:11Which one wouldn't make it
- 1:05:12if you had to put Matt in?
- 1:05:13Probably Kalipa.
- 1:05:17I think Mikko has an
- 1:05:20influence with the
- 1:05:24Europeans to really grow the sport there.
- 1:05:27Yeah,
- 1:05:28I agree that Mikko's influence on
- 1:05:31Europe was massive.
- 1:05:33And I really like Jason Kalipa a lot,
- 1:05:36so it's a tough one between those two.
- 1:05:39I'll give the edge for the
- 1:05:42Just for the Europeans, I think,
- 1:05:44just to grow it there.
- 1:05:46We'll give it to Miko.
- 1:05:48I got lazy and went James Fitzgerald.
- 1:05:50He was the first ever champion.
- 1:05:52And just like in the NFL,
- 1:05:55the Hall of Fame always
- 1:05:56does like an old-timers vote in.
- 1:06:00And just so that people can
- 1:06:02learn about how the sport started.
- 1:06:04And James Fitzgerald has
- 1:06:05been around the sport ever
- 1:06:07since with OPEX and all of that stuff.
- 1:06:11And so I go Matt Rich, James Fitzgerald.
- 1:06:19Andrew Sten says, Rich Matt, Jason Kalipa.
- 1:06:27And you'd probably have some sort of,
- 1:06:30you know,
- 1:06:30people from the first era would
- 1:06:32probably get inducted first
- 1:06:33before even like Matt would
- 1:06:35get because he's one of the
- 1:06:36more recent retirees.
- 1:06:38So you would probably get, you know,
- 1:06:39the Ben Smiths and people before that,
- 1:06:43even though Ben's still competing.
- 1:06:46So with the women,
- 1:06:48they're all still competing pretty much.
- 1:06:54No.
- 1:06:54I'm trying to make a point here.
- 1:06:56So you can't go Katrin.
- 1:06:57You can't go Annie.
- 1:06:58You can't go because they
- 1:07:00are still competing.
- 1:07:01Right.
- 1:07:02Right.
- 1:07:03Yep.
- 1:07:04You can't go Tia because
- 1:07:05she's still competing.
- 1:07:06Yep.
- 1:07:08So the Mount Rushmore of women...
- 1:07:12ish is kind of off limits
- 1:07:15because they're still competing.
- 1:07:16So it makes it a whole lot harder.
- 1:07:20That's true.
- 1:07:21So who do you got for women?
- 1:07:23I have Kristen Clever, Katie Henninger,
- 1:07:26Sam Briggs.
- 1:07:30Okay.
- 1:07:31I had all those on my narrow down list.
- 1:07:34I have a question mark for
- 1:07:36Kristen Clever for me.
- 1:07:37But I have Carrie Pierce.
- 1:07:40Sam Briggs, and Annie Sakamoto.
- 1:07:48I have Sam Briggs, Kristen Clever,
- 1:07:50and Becca Voigt.
- 1:07:54Becca's a very good one.
- 1:07:56I had Wagner as well on my list.
- 1:07:57I did too.
- 1:07:59And I thought about Annie as well.
- 1:08:02I understand that's Kristen Holta,
- 1:08:04Tanya Wagner, and Katie Henniger.
- 1:08:07Holta's great too.
- 1:08:10Holta is one of my favorite athletes.
- 1:08:13Holta Sakamoto.
- 1:08:17Nobody with Carrie Pierce.
- 1:08:21Y'all are crazy.
- 1:08:27Sarah Cooper says Kara.
- 1:08:31She's competing on a team.
- 1:08:33I had it up in the air
- 1:08:34whether that counted or not.
- 1:08:40And to be honest, to me,
- 1:08:44the other people I picked
- 1:08:44either won it or Becca was
- 1:08:48the first woman to go
- 1:08:49double-digit appearances at the games.
- 1:08:52Yeah.
- 1:08:54Her long job.
- 1:08:55She was a podium winner as well.
- 1:08:58So with all of those credentials,
- 1:09:01that's why I...
- 1:09:02Katie was there too for me
- 1:09:04because of what she's done
- 1:09:07for the sport overall.
- 1:09:09Champion and then moves into
- 1:09:11a different realm,
- 1:09:13but still has supported the
- 1:09:14sport forever.
- 1:09:15But I went on the court or
- 1:09:18floor more than off.
- 1:09:20See, like in my mind,
- 1:09:22when I picked my athlete's mail and
- 1:09:25female,
- 1:09:25which is why I probably didn't
- 1:09:26think about Matt.
- 1:09:27Cause I was thinking more of
- 1:09:28like the influence outside as well,
- 1:09:31or just on the sport.
- 1:09:32I mean,
- 1:09:32Matt would have an incredible influence,
- 1:09:35obviously.
- 1:09:36I just,
- 1:09:36he was so like near retirement to
- 1:09:38me that I didn't,
- 1:09:39I was trying to look further back.
- 1:09:42Um, but yeah.
- 1:09:44Do you realize Matt's been
- 1:09:45retired for four years?
- 1:09:46It's crazy.
- 1:09:47That is crazy.
- 1:09:50It's gone by fast.
- 1:09:52Most underrated valve overall.
- 1:09:55Who is making her comeback
- 1:09:56at the Masters CrossFit
- 1:09:58Games versus our very own Jamie Latimer.
- 1:10:05Isn't Vale in the 45?
- 1:10:08I thought she was 40 to 44,
- 1:10:09but I might be wrong.
- 1:10:10I thought she was 45.
- 1:10:18Andrew Sten said,
- 1:10:19I think women is harder to pick than men.
- 1:10:20Definitely.
- 1:10:21Definitely.
- 1:10:22Because you have two of
- 1:10:23Mount Rushmore that are
- 1:10:24retired for the men.
- 1:10:27Like that you just instantly
- 1:10:28say they're up on Mount Rushmore.
- 1:10:34And all like the three
- 1:10:35greatest female
- 1:10:37CrossFitters of all time
- 1:10:38are all still competing.
- 1:10:40Yeah.
- 1:10:43So yeah, it made it tough.
- 1:10:48Anything else on that?
- 1:10:51No, I just can't believe I forgot Matt.
- 1:10:53I feel dumb.
- 1:10:54I get what you're saying.
- 1:10:56He's not the one that comes
- 1:10:57to mind for me first with
- 1:10:59influence in the sport.
- 1:11:00Of course he has a huge influence,
- 1:11:02but he's just not rich.
- 1:11:04He didn't bolster up CrossFit.
- 1:11:07I mean, he had opportunities.
- 1:11:10He had interviews that he could have.
- 1:11:13I don't know.
- 1:11:13I just...
- 1:11:16But he's still in that freezer.
- 1:11:19I know.
- 1:11:19It's fine.
- 1:11:20It's fine.
- 1:11:21He came to my mind instantly.
- 1:11:23Yeah.
- 1:11:23Instantly.
- 1:11:24Like, bam.
- 1:11:26Draw your dagger.
- 1:11:27Interesting question.
- 1:11:28I have an interesting question after this.
- 1:11:30Influential would give some
- 1:11:31nods to Valenzuela, Tovar,
- 1:11:33Camille LeBlanc, Bazinet.
- 1:11:35They were it people.
- 1:11:37Is it people influential or
- 1:11:40just it people?
- 1:11:42Yeah.
- 1:11:42Yeah.
- 1:11:45So influential to me,
- 1:11:46like what Rich has done for
- 1:11:48the overall sport and for
- 1:11:50CrossFit in general methodology,
- 1:11:53everything is super influential.
- 1:11:58I don't think anybody else
- 1:11:59in CrossFit has done what he has done.
- 1:12:04So now like you're parsing things out.
- 1:12:06Like I don't even think
- 1:12:09Camille is embracing CrossFit anymore.
- 1:12:11No.
- 1:12:11No.
- 1:12:18And, you know,
- 1:12:19some would say that her one
- 1:12:21win was kind of a fluky
- 1:12:22programming thing.
- 1:12:27Stacey Tovar is an affiliate owner.
- 1:12:28She does contribute to the space,
- 1:12:32but it's a much smaller
- 1:12:33level than like a Rich.
- 1:12:37Or even like a Becca Voigt.
- 1:12:38Becca Voigt's been an
- 1:12:39affiliate owner forever.
- 1:12:43Yeah, I forgot about her.
- 1:12:44She's a great pick.
- 1:12:47And, uh, and then Lindsay Valenzuela,
- 1:12:50I know she has a lot of fans,
- 1:12:52a lot of fans, but I just don't think.
- 1:12:56And for me, like Stacey Tovar is my girl.
- 1:12:58Like that is,
- 1:12:59that is before I ever got
- 1:13:00into this media space.
- 1:13:01That's who I rooted for.
- 1:13:06And I wouldn't even put her
- 1:13:10in at this point.
- 1:13:11Maybe someday.
- 1:13:12But no podiums.
- 1:13:15One top 10 finish, I think.
- 1:13:21So Valenzuela and Camille
- 1:13:24had better finishes than she did.
- 1:13:32um historic fitness says
- 1:13:37it's because matt has
- 1:13:38broken six athletes as a
- 1:13:39coach uh not sure about
- 1:13:44that uh if you looked at
- 1:13:47what people wore in gyms in
- 1:13:48the mid to late 2010s they
- 1:13:49had a ton of influence
- 1:13:54sad to say I wore the the
- 1:13:57necklace that rich wore I
- 1:13:58had the bandana um I wore
- 1:14:01the shades uh yeah rich was
- 1:14:07rich was my guy yeah uh
- 1:14:11kenneth what about rogue
- 1:14:12lady kitty henniger she
- 1:14:13made a list yeah she was
- 1:14:16sad uh none of the newer
- 1:14:20people even know who tovar or clb are
- 1:14:23You're probably right.
- 1:14:25Other than that,
- 1:14:25Stacey announced the games last year.
- 1:14:29And that's probably all they know of her.
- 1:14:37I'm saying that I think
- 1:14:38those folks had a lot of
- 1:14:39influence on the culture of CrossFit.
- 1:14:42They did.
- 1:14:43Most definitely.
- 1:14:51I've got some.
- 1:14:55I'll have to break one out.
- 1:15:00I just know I did 14.5 in the full getup.
- 1:15:06The rogue shorts.
- 1:15:11That's the thruster and burpee one.
- 1:15:13Oh, yeah.
- 1:15:16Had the headband, had the necklace,
- 1:15:18the whole bit.
- 1:15:19I did it inside, so no shades, but
- 1:15:25Rock tape on both knees.
- 1:15:31Yeah.
- 1:15:32Wraps.
- 1:15:35Yeah, I think that was it.
- 1:15:38So, yeah,
- 1:15:39I'll break one out for next week.
- 1:15:42We should all submit a
- 1:15:43picture of us in like high
- 1:15:47socks or whatever the goofy trend was,
- 1:15:51goofiest trend you wore in the gym.
- 1:15:57And if you guys in the
- 1:15:58audience have goofy trend picks,
- 1:16:01DM me with them.
- 1:16:04And we will share them next
- 1:16:05week on the show.
- 1:16:09Sarah, it was not a Halloween costume.
- 1:16:11Not at all.
- 1:16:13It was what I wore to the gym every day.
- 1:16:20All right.
- 1:16:21Some quick hits as we head out tonight.
- 1:16:24Number one,
- 1:16:26I get to announce that, yes,
- 1:16:30we got media credentials
- 1:16:31for the CrossFit Games.
- 1:16:35We got our approval on
- 1:16:36Friday late afternoon as I
- 1:16:37was driving to Michigan and
- 1:16:39my phone was blowing up and
- 1:16:40I was driving so I couldn't
- 1:16:42pay attention to it.
- 1:16:43But yeah, we got the access.
- 1:16:48It's going to be interesting.
- 1:16:49It was written out way
- 1:16:51differently than it has
- 1:16:52been in years past.
- 1:16:54So it'll be interesting to
- 1:16:55see what all that means.
- 1:17:00We already talked about full
- 1:17:01access to the behind the
- 1:17:02scenes of the Masters CrossFit Games.
- 1:17:04Super stoked about that.
- 1:17:06And then it was announced
- 1:17:07this week that ESPN will be
- 1:17:10broadcasting the CrossFit
- 1:17:11Games and they are doing an
- 1:17:14international version on
- 1:17:16the CrossFit Games website
- 1:17:18and YouTube for the
- 1:17:19international customers.
- 1:17:20But in the States,
- 1:17:23ESPN will be the primary
- 1:17:25broadcaster and they are...
- 1:17:28airing exclusive two-hour
- 1:17:30blocks every day.
- 1:17:37So, I think that's all that is.
- 1:17:42That's the news.
- 1:17:43Draw your dagger is as
- 1:17:44cheesy as we all looked.
- 1:17:45Think about how strong the
- 1:17:47culture of CrossFit was then.
- 1:17:49It's been downhill ever since.
- 1:17:50The neon, the board shorts,
- 1:17:52the tall socks.
- 1:17:56I think it's, I think,
- 1:17:58I think the culture is still
- 1:18:00strong in some of the affiliates.
- 1:18:04I think when we're in this media world,
- 1:18:07we sometimes get sucked
- 1:18:08into the negative narrative.
- 1:18:10But when I go to the gym, it is,
- 1:18:13everybody's great.
- 1:18:14The community is awesome.
- 1:18:15Everybody's cheering each other on.
- 1:18:18And we're not even wearing neon anymore.
- 1:18:21I wear...
- 1:18:23Go ahead.
- 1:18:24I would say I wear neon plenty.
- 1:18:27But speaking of affiliates,
- 1:18:29I'm surprised at how many
- 1:18:30of the athletes are
- 1:18:31training inside an affiliate.
- 1:18:33I thought more of them were
- 1:18:34training in their garage,
- 1:18:35but almost almost all of
- 1:18:37them in their interviews
- 1:18:38have mentioned different
- 1:18:39affiliated gyms that they're training at.
- 1:18:43So I think that's a that's a
- 1:18:45positive sign versus all
- 1:18:47the athletes just training
- 1:18:49away from the community and on their own.
- 1:18:52It's nice to see that some
- 1:18:53of them are coaching some
- 1:18:55classes and still involved
- 1:18:57within their communities.
- 1:19:02Or one of them built their
- 1:19:03own affiliate in their backyard.
- 1:19:08Two of them soon with Ariel's too.
- 1:19:13And Ariel actually,
- 1:19:15the concept of hers came
- 1:19:17from Emma McQuaid.
- 1:19:21How would you like an
- 1:19:22affiliate with freestanding
- 1:19:24rig with a freestanding rig?
- 1:19:28Have you seen it?
- 1:19:31What's a freestanding?
- 1:19:32What do you mean?
- 1:19:34So it doesn't have any legs,
- 1:19:37the pull up bars,
- 1:19:38the rings from the ceiling.
- 1:19:40Yeah.
- 1:19:40That's how they have.
- 1:19:42They have that.
- 1:19:47They have rig too, but they,
- 1:19:48they have the freestanding pull up.
- 1:19:50Yeah.
- 1:19:51it's been a long time since
- 1:19:53I've been there but yeah I
- 1:19:54do remember over the where
- 1:19:56the lifting boards were
- 1:19:58they have yeah I don't
- 1:20:01think I'd like it
- 1:20:02personally I don't know she
- 1:20:05said it gave her all the
- 1:20:05floor space she needed
- 1:20:07while still having the rig
- 1:20:09to do the like a long lunge
- 1:20:11or a long whatever
- 1:20:14And it's immaculate.
- 1:20:17She said she's so picky and
- 1:20:19everything's in the right
- 1:20:20spot and it's super clean.
- 1:20:23Well, she's proud of it.
- 1:20:25It's her baby, right?
- 1:20:26She built that.
- 1:20:27She worked hard.
- 1:20:28She won that Waterpalooza
- 1:20:29money and I think put it
- 1:20:31towards building that gym.
- 1:20:35I mean, why wouldn't you keep it clean,
- 1:20:38right?
- 1:20:39You worked hard for it.
- 1:20:41Yeah.
- 1:20:42It looks awesome.
- 1:20:45Dave was impressed.
- 1:20:48I could see Dave wanting to
- 1:20:49go there and check it out.
- 1:20:53That's cool.
- 1:20:55Yeah.
- 1:20:56I'm telling you,
- 1:20:56these Dave interviews really shocked me.
- 1:21:00They are so good.
- 1:21:02He is opening up so much to these people.
- 1:21:06It's been awesome.
- 1:21:07It's been awesome to get to
- 1:21:08know Dave as more of a
- 1:21:09human than just the guy
- 1:21:12programming the games.
- 1:21:13Mm-hmm.
- 1:21:16it's going to be interesting
- 1:21:16to hear from the athletes,
- 1:21:18how much different the
- 1:21:19interaction is with him
- 1:21:21this year at the games,
- 1:21:22as opposed to years past.
- 1:21:27Yeah.
- 1:21:30He might hate it.
- 1:21:31He doesn't want to talk.
- 1:21:32I feel like at the games and
- 1:21:33now he's like opened up
- 1:21:34this friendly vibe with
- 1:21:35them and people are going
- 1:21:37to want to talk to him.
- 1:21:38I don't know.
- 1:21:39It'll be curious to see.
- 1:21:45But isn't that how you're
- 1:21:46going to grow the sport?
- 1:21:47They are your voice.
- 1:21:48They are your bullhorn to
- 1:21:51talk about what CrossFit is.
- 1:21:53And so many of them are in affiliates.
- 1:21:55So many of them are coaching.
- 1:21:58Some have level threes, level fours.
- 1:22:02You want those people talking about it.
- 1:22:05So I think from a business sense,
- 1:22:08he needs that.
- 1:22:10He needs to open up that
- 1:22:11door so that they can...
- 1:22:14Like,
- 1:22:14you remember back when Rich and Annie
- 1:22:16won it and they went on
- 1:22:17tour with CrossFit?
- 1:22:19Like,
- 1:22:20that relationship was severed at one
- 1:22:22point,
- 1:22:23and they need to reopen that so
- 1:22:25that athletes are willing
- 1:22:26to go do those things again.
- 1:22:31But anyway, I digress.
- 1:22:34Again.
- 1:22:36I'm going to give it one more try.
- 1:22:37If you have a riff and you
