- 0:45Welcome back to The Foundry Corner podcast with my partner.
- 0:49Brian Sigler, I'm Curtis Wilson, Brian how it goes tonight.
- 0:55Yeah buddy. We're back on a Wednesday night.
- 0:57Just watch the Hokies close out a tight one.
- 1:00At the end, even though the first half was pretty much all
- 1:03Hokies so good to close that. One out and a good Wednesday
- 1:07night so far, man. Good W.
- 1:10Hopefully get sits on the right side of Bernardi's Bracketology
- 1:13we were just outside. That when gets this just inside,
- 1:17but it's been a couple weeks we're in the off season mode
- 1:21every few weeks were showing up on Wednesday nights here for you
- 1:24guys. Last time, it was Thursday.
- 1:27We're going to try to aim for Wednesday's.
- 1:28Most weeks, and man, we've got a show tonight, Brian.
- 1:32So much stuff, a press conference, some transfers, and
- 1:36guys, stay, and some guys leaving coaches salaries, which
- 1:40was eye-opening, but let's start with something real fun by
- 1:44Brian. If you have not seen already
- 1:47Hokie Nation. Go look up on BT.
- 1:49Twitter re T, Instagram or Facebook page?
- 1:53Coach pry gets involved in the traditional first, snow Flight
- 1:58of the Year snowball playing smooth.
- 2:01These snow fight between the student body and the corps of
- 2:06cadets, and It was, it's refreshing.
- 2:14It's he was having a blast and probably.
- 2:19Was he making just nice. Little little snowballs.
- 2:21You throw at your kids to have my use?
- 2:23He was checking coconuts, man. I just talking coconuts.
- 2:27I mean, he was in the motion like, oh yeah.
- 2:31Oh yeah, he was like, the kids are Jackie.
- 2:37They show the video in his. He's walking towards it.
- 2:41You hear somebody say? Holy mother.
- 2:45I don't know if they said, holy shit or what but you could hear.
- 2:47Oh my God it's coach. And he gets swarmed and and then
- 2:52the next thing you know he's walking across to the core and
- 2:59what was so cool about it at first, it was they were just you
- 3:02can see they didn't know what it was.
- 3:03And then all of a sudden that first guy noticed and then the
- 3:07rest of them noticed. Yep.
- 3:09And just exuberance from them. Yeah, it's good to see a guy
- 3:15that gets Virginia Tech like pry does.
- 3:21And I mean, I know we said this probably ad nauseam.
- 3:27It's been all over Twitter. Yes, this guy gets it, like,
- 3:30it's getting cliche this point but this guy fucking gets it.
- 3:33He died. That's what students do.
- 3:49That's what we did. You know, when we visit a tank
- 3:51is undergrad, you go to PK's, you get some wings, he got his
- 3:54own lemon pepper, wet that he made the cheetah Wing, which I'm
- 3:58not a big drag guy. But I gotta say that, that that
- 4:02sounds pretty good those wings, you see him taking pictures out
- 4:07in the community like they get it.
- 4:09It's like, this is home, is truly a, it's no longer just a
- 4:14slogan. Yeah, it is like there.
- 4:17They're get it. Like, let's get in here, get in
- 4:20the community, do some fun things, go to places, people go
- 4:24be seen and it doesn't feel forced.
- 4:27I think that's the big thing. It feels authentic if it was
- 4:31like checking boxes like no, that would be one thing.
- 4:34But I mean, this feel the feels authentic.
- 4:38It looks like they genuinely enjoy getting out in the
- 4:41community. Enjoy interacting with the folks
- 4:43in Blacksburg, enjoy as prided. Participating in a hokey
- 4:49tradition. Yep, it just, it feels different
- 4:55man and I mean, I know, you know, you can only win the first
- 4:58off season Once, but yes you later they are kicking its ass
- 5:02right now. They are going hard after it to
- 5:04win the all season and I tell you, you know, last week we also
- 5:08had him go hard at that press conference knocking it out of
- 5:12the ballpark again. Fine we got so much to unload to
- 5:15this thing. You got new hires, he talks
- 5:19about numerous members of the staff.
- 5:20But let's start with this, when he was talking about how he put
- 5:25the staff together, he had a few things.
- 5:27He said, and I know the one that caught your eye and then as we
- 5:32look at the guys that kind of makes sense, it's that he talked
- 5:35about, he wanted a good blend of young guys who have high
- 5:38football like, use to me. I hear he says that he's saying
- 5:41Chris Marquis and Tyler bone and with high ceilings and then he's
- 5:46talking about just And guys, that can recruit.
- 5:49And you know, every piece of this staff, it looks that way.
- 5:55It looks that way, and it looks like the staff was put together
- 5:58with thought. It wasn't just Who were the
- 6:02guys? I can bring in it.
- 6:03Was all right, which guys are going to work with the others
- 6:06which pieces are going to get us.
- 6:08What we need on the recruiting Trail on the football field and
- 6:13off the football field because that stuff is important to.
- 6:16And it seems like the, the mix the blend that he was able to
- 6:20come up with, is looking good. So far again, we're still early
- 6:25we got some some good early returns and obviously the
- 6:30enthusiasm that there Bring to the table is, is next level
- 6:34right now. So, yeah, you know, obviously
- 6:38again, we'll see what that that Trans in the future.
- 6:42But yeah, yeah, as you said Marv, Bowen, both the High
- 6:47football IQ guys. High ceiling.
- 6:50And you know, you got veterans on the staff.
- 6:52You got Quinn. You got Glen.
- 6:55Yeah. Holt you got cheetah obviously.
- 7:00So you got guys It can recruit and get guys in the building
- 7:03too. So it's also funny because
- 7:06something he mentioned and if you just kind of go back to the
- 7:08DNA of what Virginia Tech is, he talked about Anita guys that did
- 7:12BT and sort of BT's, it's one of those cultures.
- 7:16Where are we just all super a lot of people always say we're,
- 7:21we're really blue collar program.
- 7:22Know there are parts of this program that are really blue
- 7:25collar. Guys, who worked their butts
- 7:28off, Sean Quinn's, and as like bread, Glenn who have worked
- 7:32their butts off to get somewhere.
- 7:33Like this. Heck, yeah.
- 7:35But we're still a DB you. We still had some of the most
- 7:38electric running backs in the 2000s.
- 7:41Yep we have some swag and you kind of see, you know, we see
- 7:46cheetah and you see Marv and you see some of these other guys,
- 7:49they have that little bit of Swag that's what Blended so well
- 7:54for so many years where yes, we have a blue-collar worth ethic
- 7:58But if we get a chance to dog, you, we're going to dog you.
- 8:03We're going to swag you out. Yeah.
- 8:05And that's what it seems like. He knew like, I just don't need
- 8:08a bunch of blue collar guys, but I don't need a bunch of Just
- 8:11Swag. Guys, I gotta have a blend of it
- 8:14and were you shocked Bronwen? He kind of mentioned that he had
- 8:19friends. That wanted to, you know, come
- 8:22here and he basically said you don't make sense here and he
- 8:28Basically said he had to make tough phone calls to friends of
- 8:30his to say. I'm not hiring you.
- 8:33Yeah, we didn't get a Core Nelson here as a result of this
- 8:37hiring process. I mean, I'll call it like it is,
- 8:43I mean, at this point, he's hiring guys, he knows he's
- 8:47hiring, guys, he's had, he's crossed paths with but he's not
- 8:51hiring a direct or even a handful of direct protégées or
- 8:56guys. He's worked with for many, many
- 8:59years consecutively. It's, this is not the the buddy
- 9:04buddy system, but at the same time, it's a good collection of
- 9:08guys, whose Personalities seem to mesh well even when they're
- 9:15not necessarily similar, right? Absolutely.
- 9:19That's a biggie. And, you know, the other thing
- 9:24is kind of like, they asked him, what was he looking for in guys,
- 9:28right? He was talking about, he wanted
- 9:30people skills. He wanted to people to be able
- 9:33to write to the families and players.
- 9:36I think that's big, especially in recruiting, you've got to
- 9:39know the areas of the state, the areas of the region, he wanted
- 9:44great communicators in. He talked about harboring, the
- 9:47former player relationships, and it looks like, obviously would,
- 9:51you know? Pearson that's helping.
- 9:54But, you know, we saw that like, you know, if following Twitter
- 9:57today last few days, There, you know, JC price, even though he's
- 10:02a hokie goes into LC Bird and his pictures, not even with the
- 10:07football coach. He finds that it's a former
- 10:09basketball player. He knew when he went there,
- 10:12right? Yep.
- 10:13And then some of these other guys taking pictures with who
- 10:18was it? That took a picture with someone
- 10:20that you JC, not even football player but new JC and he's the
- 10:24principal of the school. And you see that and it's just
- 10:28like you talked about people skills that's understanding.
- 10:32I'm you here. Where's our relationship?
- 10:35How can we build a relationship? Yep.
- 10:38And finally that commonality in areas that aren't traditional
- 10:41to. I mean, talk about just
- 10:43fostering those relationships with folks in the school.
- 10:45I mean, having a good relationship doesn't just start
- 10:48with the head coach of that team.
- 10:50It's it's kind of a trickle down across the board and when you've
- 10:53got those type of relationships that you can tap into, it's only
- 10:58going to make the recruiting process easier and we talked
- 11:01about Former players. I mean, we're going to talk
- 11:03about him in a little bit here when we get to him.
- 11:05But you know, we already had JC and piercing on here but we got
- 11:10somebody else off the field. That's pretty big in terms of
- 11:14former player relationships as well.
- 11:17So that's big obviously people skills and and just the
- 11:22communication in general, I think is the big thing.
- 11:24This staff seems to understand communication both with the fan
- 11:30base with The players with the High School coaches, they get
- 11:36the importance of the communication piece and we're
- 11:38seeing that play out in real time in terms of just general PR
- 11:45and well, feeling well about the program this is as high as it's
- 11:50been in a while. We haven't even won any games
- 11:52yet like but and I know we talked about honeymoon period
- 11:56but This is different because we're actually seeing a
- 11:59difference. It's not just okay, new coach.
- 12:02There's hope we're actually seeing tangible differences
- 12:06happen already in this process. New coach.
- 12:09There's always hope with the new coach, that's any organization.
- 12:13That's anything like that. We both went through that with
- 12:15our NFL teams last few years, but again, it's, there's a
- 12:19change. We see the presence.
- 12:21We see things, do you and done differently.
- 12:23We see that this is a change. This is a culture change.
- 12:27Change for the better. This is a culture change back to
- 12:30what Virginia Tech does best. And that thing is something else
- 12:34that really impressed me that during this interview, he talked
- 12:37about the coaches, obviously, that was easy, but him given
- 12:42specific. Shout out to filigrana Hazel and
- 12:46Gault, just like he specified and made sure that they were
- 12:50mentioned. And that tells you a lot about
- 12:53his leadership skills, because those guys are behind the
- 12:55scenes, we like, Ali will never see them in front of a
- 12:59microphone getting interviewed by the Press because of the jobs
- 13:04they do, but they sure in that presser to specifically mention
- 13:09them and that says a lot about his leadership skills and
- 13:11laughing. Yeah.
- 13:13I mean the most we might ever see them is like one of those
- 13:15quick cut videos that get dropped on the the Twitter
- 13:20timeline from the football account.
- 13:23Something something like, quickly running through this or
- 13:26that. Or like they did with, with,
- 13:29he'll guard doing some of the strength, and conditioning
- 13:32discussions before, the workouts that you might see, God, doing
- 13:35something like that, but you're not going to see these guys
- 13:38front and center, you know, week to week, month to month, it's
- 13:41going to be kind of very one off at best.
- 13:44And again, God's probably the leader on that just because of
- 13:47the strength and conditioning aspect of his job.
- 13:50Absolutely. All right, Brian.
- 13:52Well, let's turn to it. We've got some new hires to
- 13:54discuss and Finally we get to discuss officially yeah,
- 14:01collarbone named offensive coordinator and tight ends Coach
- 14:06Bo. And if you guys haven't done
- 14:07your research on and he played at Maryland, 2007 to 2009 he was
- 14:12an offensive lineman I think Brian's immediately excited and
- 14:16oh Lyman is now the o.c. but allow me to make the best
- 14:19overseas book it but essentially after he you know got out he
- 14:25immediately started coaching you missy Distant down at Maryland.
- 14:28Then a g a moved over to Towson as a as a tight ends coach, then
- 14:33up to Penn State, then he kind of got his season and I think
- 14:38probably what we can expect. He went to Fordham.
- 14:40Joe moorhead's, a head coach. He was the old line coach there
- 14:45in 15 with Moorhead. Moorhead goes to Penn State.
- 14:50After that he takes over OC duties explosive.
- 14:56Offense, coach Chase Edmunds into being a fourth-round pick
- 15:00from Fordham. If you don't know where Fordham
- 15:02is, it's in New York City, they don't have a lot of NFL players
- 15:07in this day and age. If you know your history, the
- 15:10seven blocks of granite were at Fordham.
- 15:14Read on that. Then some mornings.
- 15:16Yep the Bronx and then oh well coach at Maryland then tighten
- 15:20coaching of recruiting coordinator Penn State for a few
- 15:23years. Then he get the cosita like we
- 15:25talked about other Penn State and then finally, you know, he
- 15:29was down in Jacksonville this year, as a tight ends coach, you
- 15:34know, whatever happened at Penn State is what happened?
- 15:36But Brian. What else do you feel?
- 15:38What else? You know, hearing from private,
- 15:41really got you excited because I like that resume.
- 15:43Tell me the guy wants to be a football coach and is invested
- 15:46in it. Yeah, he wants to be a coach and
- 15:50just circling back to what prize said, very high Q guy, you know,
- 15:56call the call, the Cotton Bowl. When they dropped over 50
- 15:58points, they did familiar with the offensive style.
- 16:02That Pride likes to run very knowledgeable, the game
- 16:06recruiting in the DMV, in Virginia area, while he was at
- 16:10Penn State. Yeah.
- 16:12Go to force. Seven and look up.
- 16:14This guy can recruit now. Delete, recruiter.
- 16:17So he clearly has a game there. And, you know, the one thing
- 16:21that was interesting to me that he talked about, was the whole
- 16:24Jacksonville situation. Yep.
- 16:27Jag's wouldn't give him a real release.
- 16:30My assumption is that he was higher on the pecking order.
- 16:33Once Urban was out in terms of the offense and his role in it,
- 16:39so they probably didn't want to let him out of that.
- 16:41Were some of the couple other guys.
- 16:43It and it was like two weeks later but they got a release
- 16:47from their deal while you know. Yeah.
- 16:50Boneheads to stay on to the end there but he was able to work
- 16:54with the GM down there. So he could vet all the
- 16:58offensive staff as they were moving along in the process
- 17:00there. So that was important.
- 17:02And it was important for us to know that because you don't want
- 17:06just to assume that prize hiring, all these guys that are,
- 17:11you know, working under Bowen. Very heavily and he didn't have
- 17:15a say in the process. So knowing that he was in on
- 17:19that had those conversations with the coaches and got to have
- 17:24those conversations with pride before the higher was made?
- 17:26I think that's important. Yeah, well first of all, the GM
- 17:29of the Jags is Trent baalke before me, 49ers GM, who ran,
- 17:34horrible out of town. After basically, that guy came
- 17:37in and put us in the Super Bowl and put us winning four
- 17:41consecutive year. So I think he Jerk.
- 17:44First of all, Curtis is salty. I don't like Trent baalke do he
- 17:47doesn't know how to draft players, either.
- 17:49He dropped a lot of torn ACL, guys.
- 17:51In a lot of guys, way too early in my opinion, but that being
- 17:56said, I think it's what Brian said.
- 17:58Because with Jacksonville Darrell Bevell d.o.c., he became
- 18:02the head coach and shot. Brian Schottenheimer became the
- 18:04o.c. So, I have a feeling where he
- 18:07was in the pecking order, he probably became like the pass
- 18:10game coordinator or the Run game coordinator in that.
- 18:13Situation. He was, he was working right
- 18:15under Schottenheimer. He was working pretty up there,
- 18:18which is, which is a good thing because that tells you that guys
- 18:21like Darrell Bevell Brian, Schottenheimer long tenured NFL,
- 18:25coaches had a lot of confidence in that guy and talk about you
- 18:30hurting Vetti, vetted every single person on the staff.
- 18:33This is his staff and this is kind of how broke I said, it's
- 18:36his step. He vetted All These Guys, these
- 18:38are his guys. This isn't like Brent said, hire
- 18:41this guy. And as far as the offense goes
- 18:46here style, he's the style. I want to run kept digging
- 18:50around. We're going to run the ball.
- 18:53It's not even a question about it.
- 18:55How how we run it? And we run it with.
- 18:58But I look back at the Fordham stats from 2016 and basically it
- 19:03was a 3-2 to run the pass and that's kind of more heads deal
- 19:07to always will run them past the passing game though, it's not
- 19:12completely. Forgotten about.
- 19:15I can't wait for Brian to get into looking at some of these
- 19:18schemes of what we can expect, obviously being a tight ends
- 19:23coach. I think we're going to get some,
- 19:27I mean, he coached just seki, he coached Fair Booth, he's coached
- 19:30quite a few number of tight ends who are in the league in at the
- 19:34top end. So you know really love this
- 19:38about him. It was one of those names when
- 19:41you heard it, you read it immediately.
- 19:43Liked it. But Brian, let's flip to the
- 19:46next position because two weeks ago, we were here in light
- 19:50brown. We were here in Tony Washington,
- 19:53who work, and this will, this was out in public, this wasn't
- 19:58behind pay walls, this wasn't somebody dming us saying, hey,
- 20:01this is what we're hearing, these were public
- 20:04acknowledgements. And then all of a sudden It
- 20:08comes down or hiring somebody Virginia connections.
- 20:13And then literally literally fontelle Minds is named the wide
- 20:20receiver coach on tell Minds plated UVA back from 2007 to
- 20:282008, usually 2000. 22 2006. So obviously from some of their
- 20:36better years in the early 2000s and then he spent three years
- 20:40with the Bears in the pros and with him not long after getting
- 20:44out of the pros again, right to coaching didn't waste any time,
- 20:50start it out here at Hermitage high school, then move down a
- 20:54challenge down in North Carolina coaching receivers and tight
- 20:57ends. Then back to Richmond working at
- 20:59U of r with wide receivers and tight ends from 13.
- 21:02From 12 to 14, receiving 12 to 16 then moves over to JM you for
- 21:09a couple good years there. Mike Houston years travel with
- 21:15goes down to ECU after that receivers, and tight ends.
- 21:19And then ODU last year he's a UVA grad.
- 21:25You know, some people will hate it.
- 21:27Some people will love it. When people just love the rub
- 21:30salt in the wounds of UVA fans basically saying this is one of
- 21:33your own and he'd rather coach here and that's fun, although
- 21:41detectives that hated you got it.
- 21:42Like, listen, Just has a good coach just has a good recruiter,
- 21:47but what more did Coach Pratt talk about with fontelle are
- 21:52obviously a lot of Virginia ties of also he has a big closeness
- 21:57with a lot of former Hokies between guys that played in the
- 22:00804 guys. He played against when he was at
- 22:02UVA and obviously you played against some damn good hockey
- 22:06teams when he was at UVA, there looks like he was one of the, I
- 22:10guess, probably the first full class that grow.
- 22:14Recruited during that transition there.
- 22:18So, but I mean I noticed numerous numerous former Hokies
- 22:25talking this guy up and that I think that speaks a lot to his
- 22:29ability and, you know, he's worked with wide receiver, most
- 22:33of his career. So he's definitely a season
- 22:35coach on that front. So we're getting a pretty
- 22:37seasoned coach, despite his age. And we're getting a guy that can
- 22:42recruit the hell out of Virginia, and I think that's a
- 22:44good One-two, punch right there. Yeah the recruiting thing is big
- 22:49and you're hearing more stories about him.
- 22:51That he's basically been recruiting Virginia his whole
- 22:54career, it makes sense. Between U of r, j mu and ECU in
- 22:59the way it looks. He's going to have who certain
- 23:02territories very crucial to this state, but it just seems like
- 23:10he's younger, has he experienced?
- 23:12I know, a lot of people are likely coach tight, Tins.
- 23:14And he was a tight in the majority of his game has been at
- 23:18wide receiver since he became a coach.
- 23:20Yeah, and, you know, it, it was just nice to see a lot of the
- 23:26former Hokies that again, our era and I say of our era when we
- 23:30were younger like congratulating happy, you know, joking with
- 23:34them a little bit. Like, you know, you got to the
- 23:35right side and it's one of these things to that.
- 23:43Let's think here. Where I can put this.
- 23:48He seems like he's going to be a culture fit because he you know
- 23:53he seems one of those blue-collar guys, right?
- 23:55Play tight end. Went to Hermitage and has worked
- 24:00his way up here. Didn't didn't like come out and
- 24:04immediately get a couple jobs and then he's, in D1, literally
- 24:07had to work his way up to D1. Yeah, and it's that whole thing
- 24:12we talking about blue, collar or flash.
- 24:14It seems like there's a lot of blue collar and him and I think
- 24:18a lot of us can pay dividends because it seems like this guy
- 24:23people like him. He's been recruiting coordinator
- 24:25at several different places. Yeah, I'm looking forward to see
- 24:28what he can do. I like, what I've already seen
- 24:31on the road, he was with Coach prize this week.
- 24:35They were down in the Oscar Smith down at a bunch of other
- 24:38schools in the 757 this week so far where they hit up today.
- 24:45Here it is. I have to go back and look, I'll
- 24:50Western Branch. Western Branch has some
- 24:52variation day as a big one down there.
- 24:57It's a big receiver down there that.
- 24:59Yeah, just I think he's going to be a good fit and again, I'm
- 25:08sure he's going to get some grief here.
- 25:09There between some of the 0 key players that are on the staff,
- 25:13but I think he's going to be a solid addition for Brian.
- 25:17Not done yet. Let's start getting to the
- 25:18support staff. And let's talk about this one
- 25:22for. We talk about this big one
- 25:24Brian, Chris hired, as the senior offensive analyst, if you
- 25:28didn't know, because it probably wasn't talked about or even
- 25:31spoken to with people. He was hired last year as just
- 25:36an offensive analyst for the old staff and he hangs around Chris.
- 25:41Native a Blacksburg brother coaches at Radford dad's a
- 25:45legendary coach. You know here hampden-sydney
- 25:50graduate Brian. Yeah I did a coached with pride
- 25:57down at Louisiana Lafayette with bustle back in the day.
- 26:00They both with Gaz together in 95, you know, or part of a UMass
- 26:06staff. That one the FCS back in the
- 26:08late 1990s was under Pelini up at Youngstown.
- 26:10State is, is 0 C. So he has a good track record.
- 26:13He does not have a lot of big known stops, but it seems like
- 26:17he's He's a very respected offensive mind.
- 26:22Yeah, it seems that way, you know, they gave him the senior
- 26:24analyst title there. And I think the thing that I
- 26:29like the most that when he was talking about Chris and he's
- 26:34like, yeah, he's a senior offensive analyst, but we might
- 26:36have him on the defensive side of the ball.
- 26:38And the more I got to think about is like, okay, this this
- 26:41kind of makes sense because As a defensive coach, sometimes you
- 26:46get a little bit into the weeds. It's nice to have a offensive
- 26:49minded person on your side of the ball and your practice feel
- 26:54that can say, hey If you do this, you know, we can counter
- 26:59with this. It's going to be pretty easy to
- 27:00take advantage of that scheme or that call, you know, whatever it
- 27:05may be having somebody that has that.
- 27:08Type of History has that relationship and can make those
- 27:12kind of calls on the defensive side.
- 27:14See things through the offenses eyes that's going to be big for
- 27:18them. I think and that's the type of
- 27:21role I kind of envisioned when Pride was talking about, you
- 27:24know, you might see him on the defensive side of the ball.
- 27:26All as an offensive analyst. So, looking forward to see what
- 27:30Chris can do. Obviously, he was there last
- 27:32year, so let's see if he can keep it moving.
- 27:36Yeah. And again, guy probably was
- 27:38connections around the, you know, the local area there as
- 27:42far as recruiting goes, I know they can't touch it but never
- 27:45hurts to have somebody that's in somebody else's ear.
- 27:48All right, Brian, this one was big.
- 27:51And we got notified by this and we kind of got tea leaves that
- 27:59it was a if you like if you watched in the 2000 you're going
- 28:03to love it. Well, first of all, that makes
- 28:07your head go 1,000 miles an hour because there were so many great
- 28:09players in the 2000's. And then we finally got when
- 28:14that it was going to be Xavier adibi, hires a defensive
- 28:17analyst, Ron's talked about it. And I cannot remember Brian on
- 28:23our Mount Rushmore. Yes.
- 28:25No, I can't remember that far back.
- 28:28I'm getting too old for this shit.
- 28:30I want to say he made it. I can't remember though, either
- 28:33way he will. He belongs there for sure
- 28:35Brian's favorite line, but he's definitely in the discussion, no
- 28:39doubt. No.
- 28:41But anyway, if you don't know, if you're younger Hokies fan,
- 28:44Xavier didin was the prototypical perfect hacker.
- 28:50Perfect, All-American, two-time all-sec selection, two-time ACC
- 28:55Champion. Fourth-round draft, pick of
- 28:57Houston played several years was inducted into the Hall of Fame
- 29:01this past season and Having that guy back.
- 29:07This is culture is one thing that's that's huge but he's been
- 29:13building his resume up for a few years here.
- 29:15Now you know he started at Arkansas as an analyst and then
- 29:18worked his way into d 2 and basically had his defense at
- 29:23Texas A&M Commerce. Giving up under 215 yards, a
- 29:26game under 13 points. A game was one of the finalists
- 29:31for like what is it coordinator of the year?
- 29:36R4d to them in a short period of time as basically exploded on
- 29:42the scene and luckily he's ours. Yeah, I mean, he was always
- 29:47really high IQ for a linebacker especially somebody that wasn't
- 29:51playing Mike. And I mean, he really did did a
- 29:55little bit of everything. You know, when we think about
- 29:59some of those big plays from a DB, we a lot of times, it says
- 30:02interceptions, it wasn't necessarily big hits.
- 30:05I mean, we, Those two but yeah some really key interceptions a
- 30:09couple going back for scores Zell really yeah pick six to the
- 30:15house, all my side of the field, there you go, good that day, but
- 30:19I still can and they always came in those opportune times 2,
- 30:23right? So yeah, having a guy that has
- 30:26that type of awareness has done the things that he's done in his
- 30:29short career as a coach, obviously, the NFL experience,
- 30:33mostly with the Texans, and, you know, just some of the things
- 30:40that Pride was talking about with the conversations he had
- 30:42with Bud Foster about him and obviously probably saying, you
- 30:46know, he knew who, who would he be was, you know, word is he was
- 30:52using some of the adibi, tape, when coaching areas at Penn
- 30:56State so, so it's great to have a guy like that back in the
- 31:02building and it's that whole thing of, as you know, we've
- 31:05heard about the alumni I called and stuff, but as you start
- 31:08bringing back in, don't get me wrong.
- 31:10Having guys like jgw and having Keyshawn and having Jack and
- 31:15them, yes, they did. Love to see, Vince Hall back to
- 31:21Robbie, but it would be great to see that.
- 31:27So But having him back it just says a lot.
- 31:33It understand it tells you promised as the culture but it's
- 31:36also one of those things as you look forward as quick as he's
- 31:39rose up. And I know he was an analyst, he
- 31:41was a D2 and now he's here. You know, if Chris Moore of is
- 31:46what we think he can be, you're going to have to have somebody
- 31:50in. Why not bring somebody in like
- 31:52you know Xavier? Yeah, because you know, no one
- 31:55will love this place more than him.
- 31:59Exactly exactly. And I think we're going to see
- 32:02some dividends from that pretty quick.
- 32:03So I'm looking forward to seeing what he does.
- 32:07He will type of role. He's going to have, is that
- 32:08defensive analyst? Yep.
- 32:11All right so we already mentioned it earlier but coach
- 32:14did give the white Galt as he calls them D.
- 32:18Big shout out talking about the offseason program.
- 32:20That's going to be starting pretty soon here.
- 32:22I don't think it started this week.
- 32:24I think it starts next week. I might be wrong, you know, but
- 32:29discussing him, basically, a DG is a pretty young guy, but
- 32:33obviously, he worked with his dad for so long at, you know,
- 32:36between Vanderbilt and Penn State.
- 32:39And, you know, He was just sitting there talking about,
- 32:41like deej is a real culture driver when I hear that.
- 32:46That tells me whatever problems to get done all season.
- 32:51Why's he knows that deej is going to put that into effect.
- 32:57Yeah. Yeah, the culture driver piece
- 32:58was big for me. He said as like-minded as
- 33:01anybody on the staff, he get thinking his pride, he gets the
- 33:06vision. I'm going to say right now No
- 33:10more Beachbody shit that's cooked.
- 33:19And I mean you know, when he talked about the the training
- 33:23process, you talked about the adversity that people go through
- 33:27in that and that really kind of tells you a lot about the
- 33:29character, the player, what they could handle, what they can
- 33:31handle, whether they're ready for ready for a leadership role,
- 33:35whether they lead, by example, whether they're more vocal I
- 33:40think him talking about that really gets that.
- 33:42He understands that that helped how important that relationship
- 33:45is especially early in a new regime here because you get a
- 33:50lay of the land. That's really going to be your
- 33:53first line of defense to kind of give you that lay of the land.
- 33:56Absolutely. The only thing he talked about,
- 33:58was he really trust the white in those adverse situations, and he
- 34:04talked about how this is how you recognize, who your leaders are
- 34:08earlier if you kind of go back when he Talks about, he knows
- 34:11Prime. He knows his vision.
- 34:13That's the guy you want, because if the guy knows your vision,
- 34:16your very like-minded, you're going to, he's going to be going
- 34:19in there saying, that's going to be a captain.
- 34:22Yep, that guy's not the captain but he's the dog on the fence.
- 34:26He also no one guys that you can push to get more out of them and
- 34:30guys that you need to kind of bring along.
- 34:32Yep. You know what a little with a
- 34:34little more thought, right? Some guys Thrive off getting
- 34:38pushed getting. Getting that get in their face
- 34:42and, and some guys need a little bit more mental, right?
- 34:44Need a little bit with some guys, Minds can't handle that
- 34:48the physical pushy and they can be superior athletes and then he
- 34:52great players and great individuals.
- 34:54But you have to do a little bit mean.
- 34:56I'm sure that's going to be related and I think that's why I
- 34:59keep hearing. I keep thinking like minded like
- 35:02minded I'm sure there's going to be times where you're probably
- 35:05going to hear. I'm sure probably uses it.
- 35:09This is what deej made you do and this is the same thing.
- 35:13I'm going to make you do. And if you have that sort of
- 35:16connection, essentially there's no change right from season or
- 35:21anything. It's all one level.
- 35:24This is how we're doing it. When coach has done with us,
- 35:27we're going to Deez Nuts, Deez, just like coach.
- 35:30No, there's no, like, this guy's really hard on us.
- 35:34Coaches. Softer arms or Coaches soft
- 35:37tones. And this guy tries to kill us.
- 35:39You, don't you keep to me? You can't have that in the sport
- 35:42football. It's got to be same level type
- 35:45stuff, man. And it looks like that's why
- 35:48these retired. And he's a young guy, and
- 35:51hopefully DG's around here for a long time, and we can get DJ
- 35:56five. Instead of gentrified, I Braun.
- 36:01When you heard that Pride did not reach out to Joe Rudolph.
- 36:06Joe Rudolph reached out to pry. What was your first thought?
- 36:11Damn, that's a that's a big mood energy right there because You
- 36:18know, we thought that this was something that Pride kind of
- 36:20went out on a limb for, but it sounds like Rudolph was looking
- 36:23for a changed. Had a had a connection with
- 36:26somebody else here. Virginia Tech got it.
- 36:28Got in touch with prai said, hey looking for a change, looking
- 36:32for a little bit closer to family and proud, laid out his
- 36:38vision, talked about what he wants to get from an offensive
- 36:40line and you know the next thing you know, we got Joe Rudolph as
- 36:45Their offensive line coach. Yeah, and we talked about it,
- 36:50two weeks ago, it got us a static and, you know, he
- 36:54mentioned really specifically how Joe was from the Pittsburgh
- 36:58area djoko. Keep it and listen to it is
- 37:02about a five, five and a half hour drive to take.
- 37:05So if you have a lot of family there, a lot easier from going
- 37:08there down at Blacksburg there to Madison.
- 37:11So, I wonder if that's a one of the big driving forces, but what
- 37:14got me jacked in when Price said, here's my vision of the
- 37:20offensive line and what he does is what I want to do.
- 37:24Braun. We know how there was constant
- 37:27offensive lines have been for years?
- 37:29We've talked about it before and when you hear that again and it
- 37:33starts the the the the everything starts turning
- 37:36inside. Like we're going to go try to
- 37:39literally slam it down people's throats.
- 37:42Yeah. And yeah, that's in the other
- 37:45piece. Is the recruiting piece is he is
- 37:50always recruited the western part of Pennsylvania, or the
- 37:53eastern part of Ohio. And those are areas that really,
- 37:58in the last five years, we've neglected, yeah, pulled some
- 38:03good players, out of those areas.
- 38:04So, love hearing that, we're going to get back into that
- 38:07football, Rich area the country. Yeah, I mean, you know we always
- 38:11talk about Penn State coming down in Virginia and eating our
- 38:14lunch, they've been eating our lunch in their own backyard to
- 38:17where we used to go with, with some degree of frequency that we
- 38:20really don't know, really tap into anymore.
- 38:22So getting a guy that really can has relationships with with
- 38:28coaches and families. There can really tap into those.
- 38:32I think that's going to be big for us, you know, aside from the
- 38:35on the field stuff which I think is probably in terms of on the
- 38:38field. This is probably the best.
- 38:39Just hire. I think of the staff in terms of
- 38:42what we can get from the all the feel product.
- 38:46So, absolutely. Alright.
- 38:48Next call, Brian in this was, I don't know if this was a shocker
- 38:53lady. It was to some of us but he
- 38:55talked about Sean Quinn. He talked about Sean Quinn being
- 38:57that first call. Was what what do you think this?
- 39:04What do you think? He just saw Quinn's.
- 39:08Why do you think Sean Combs the first call?
- 39:10Because he doesn't have the greatest resume.
- 39:14Why he seems like his personality really kind of fits
- 39:19the vision of what prize trying to do.
- 39:23And I think he gets the, you know, we talked about the swag
- 39:25and then the blue collar mentality, kind of a hybrid, you
- 39:28know, I think he kind of understood understands that,
- 39:31right? He's a guy that's had to grind.
- 39:34He's also a guy that's had to coach players that, you know,
- 39:40we're probably bringing some from different areas, so, I
- 39:44think that it wasn't just the the blue-collar mentality.
- 39:47I think he's bringing a little bit of everything there, but
- 39:50he's a guy that had to grind for a lot of years.
- 39:52He's a guy that probably got passed over for a couple
- 39:55opportunities throughout the way and I think price also a good
- 39:58opportunity to get a guy that really align with his vision on
- 40:02the staff and it really. He's been crushing it since he's
- 40:05been here. I mean, we see him on Twitter,
- 40:07dude for a 49 year old coach. He is on Twitter and really
- 40:14engaging with the fan base engaging with the folks that
- 40:16he's visiting on the, on the recruiting Trail.
- 40:19Oh yeah, I mean outside of cheetah, he's tweeting more than
- 40:22anybody else and found a great burger joint while visiting up a
- 40:26note of this week and literally every coach he'd come in contact
- 40:30with, he's made sure to put them on Twitter and thanking them and
- 40:33dip and then not just saying, thank you for letting me be
- 40:36here. Everything is a little snippet,
- 40:39you know, one of the coaches. I'm Mentioned.
- 40:41Hey good, thank you for having me at this school coach and yada
- 40:44yada. Hey, it was great.
- 40:45Talking, the defense for you. He's making sure he's like that
- 40:49little Personal Touch on every single tweet for each coach and,
- 40:54you know, I mean maybe that was it maybe in Brent prize, mine,
- 41:00Sean Quinn should have been a division.
- 41:02One football coach ten years ago you said pasta I see him as a
- 41:08glue guy he's not going to stand out but he's the glue guy.
- 41:12The guy that can bring everybody together because you know He
- 41:16grinded for years. He took, you know, he coaching
- 41:20the HBCU down surveillance State.
- 41:22Yeah, and took them from literally, the one of the worst
- 41:25teams in the country to win a conference.
- 41:27So if somebody says, well, we can't do this bullshit, I went
- 41:31to the worst and we won. Let's get this together.
- 41:35All right, Braun. Lets flip on this talk about
- 41:37recruiting we talked about Quentin and his tweets while
- 41:40he's been recruiting. He said it out, right?
- 41:45First week exclusive for the state of Virginia outside of a
- 41:48trip to Georgia. Although we did see Brad the
- 41:51wind down there, doing some other work.
- 41:53I don't know if that's holding on the Daquan or potentially
- 41:55other guys, but it looks like pretty much every coach is in VA
- 42:01this week. Yeah, everybody's patrolling
- 42:05Virginia seems like, except for maybe Brad Glenn.
- 42:09Looks to be making a trip back down to Georgia.
- 42:13They made a trip, I think. Week to visit right as well.
- 42:18They were at his high school down in Perry.
- 42:22And what they've done in Virginia is pretty impressive
- 42:25because we've seen you JC in the 804, we've seen minds and
- 42:32cheetah out. In the 757, we've seen Pearson
- 42:36and Marv and Quinn up in Nova. You know, we've seen heck more,
- 42:43I'm proud and 757. Well Marv was out in the valley
- 42:47today. Yeah, well gesture, I mean in
- 42:50few holds down and with Ville. That's every section of the
- 42:54state, every section of the state's get we're going to see
- 42:58Holton the in our stomping grounds, by the end of the week,
- 43:01man. I definitely think he's taking
- 43:04the 58 Corridor until he gets to about South Hill and then he's
- 43:08probably going to cut back but it's just awesome to see that
- 43:11and it's also to see the interactions and it's also sting
- 43:14and we've already talked about, they get it, get it on social
- 43:16media, get it like this is where we're going and you see them
- 43:21going to not only to the Name brand school.
- 43:23Yeah, you know JC was an LLC burdell seabirds won numerous
- 43:27state titles the last few years Prime them an Oscar Smith.
- 43:35Gz. I'm blanking here.
- 43:37Cheetah was a tedious. Yeah, I mean she's old school.
- 43:43He's old school. He was at Hampton, you know?
- 43:46They were decreed today. I mean, if we can just find two
- 43:51players from Deep Creek of the caliber of Hall.
- 43:57And tap, we be great. Yeah, I mean, It's all you need
- 44:04is you seeing them also go to schools that don't produce as
- 44:07much talent. And this shows you strategy
- 44:11because get in there early because every school at some
- 44:16point puts together or puts out a big-time Talent.
- 44:21Yeah. Yeah.
- 44:23This isn't going to be any more of a highlight, a handful of
- 44:27schools that we've had success at and then Hammer that And then
- 44:32hope we make some inroads with some of the top top. 10 recruits
- 44:36at the state and land maybe one or two.
- 44:40This is going to be canvassing the entire State Building those
- 44:43relationships. And when you finally get, you
- 44:46know, one or two guys, start coming up through there, you got
- 44:49that relationship in place. You can have those those those
- 44:52discussions right off the bat and kind of get in first with
- 44:57these with these kids. And I think that's a that's
- 45:00important. You know, I think we definitely
- 45:03neglected the boots on the ground, got mentality under the
- 45:08last staff. In terms of sitting guys into
- 45:10the schools consistently and not just when there's a top-five
- 45:15player at that school. Yep.
- 45:17And that's what you can do because you don't have the
- 45:20relationships and this is a relationship business alright?
- 45:25The other cool part was kind of Brent Pride, pulling out what
- 45:28his vision of essentially, the big recruiting footprint.
- 45:32The six hour radius around Blacksburg and that encompasses,
- 45:37North Carolina, South Carolina, the DMV, obviously,
- 45:41Pennsylvania. Central in the East Tennessee,
- 45:45along with all of these Lee Virginia.
- 45:49That's I think that's what we feel.
- 45:51We got to do but what it did it did it shock?
- 45:54You wear what he said when he talked about opportunities
- 45:57elsewhere. Yeah, so I think the
- 46:02opportunities elsewhere is definitely going to be some of
- 46:05our traditional stomping grounds with Delray Beach Jacksonville.
- 46:11I think those are going to be areas that we still tap into,
- 46:15you're going to get I mean if you talk about six hour radius
- 46:17you're talking about the Greater Atlanta area to pretty much
- 46:22right on the edge on it. That's like six and a half,
- 46:24right? Yeah, right.
- 46:27Yeah. Roundup.
- 46:29It's six hours and 20. It's not over the six and a
- 46:31half. Mark, we were going around back
- 46:33down to six. We're good.
- 46:34Let's, let's rate Atlanta here. But I mean, we've done well in
- 46:39Georgia. Obviously, we got a coach in
- 46:41Georgia, you know, finishing out the recruitment down there with
- 46:46right and some others. So, I think George is still in
- 46:50play. I think parts of Florida are
- 46:51still in play, but like, he said in his previous comments, I
- 46:55mean, we're we talked about Where we're going to aim.
- 47:03We're not crossing the Mississippi, unless there's
- 47:05already an established relationship with a family or a
- 47:10player or a coach in those areas.
- 47:15So, you don't have a reason that ties you back to the state of
- 47:17Virginia or to Virginia Tech. We're not just throwing darts
- 47:21across the Mississippi, his words, not mine, Vicki, Dortch
- 47:25across the Mississippi. So why like Kim saying it?
- 47:28Like that is if there is a kid. For example, dad.
- 47:32As a BT Alum and it's an upcoming recruit, we're going to
- 47:36go talk to that kid. Yep.
- 47:38Why dad went here? Mom went here or you know it
- 47:42could be one of those things where, you know, you kind of
- 47:46think a deep. He's been coaching out of Texas.
- 47:47If, if Xavier adibi, has a great relationship with a school down
- 47:52there and says this kid likes it, he liked me.
- 47:55Let's go after. Yep.
- 47:57What we're not going to see is we're not going to see our
- 47:59resources poured into that if you're going to be specific.
- 48:03So if we get a kid from Colorado, don't be shocked if
- 48:06you get it. Get from California, don't be
- 48:08shocked. But read why what's the reason
- 48:11why we went out and got those kids, there's going to be a very
- 48:14specific and targeted reason for going after these players.
- 48:18I'd say probably the only exception, maybe a transfer
- 48:21portal, add true just because depending on, you know, one or
- 48:26two years of Eligibility, it might be worth a gamble on on
- 48:29going after a bigger time player.
- 48:32For that one or two years. Right?
- 48:34But if we're talking about high school recruits.
- 48:36Yeah, I think we're sticking with that radius outside of
- 48:40again. Maybe dipping down into Georgia
- 48:42and Florida. Yeah, consistent basis.
- 48:44But the whole thing with the Georgia and Florida stuff is a
- 48:47lot of those schools have connections to Tech.
- 48:50Yeah, well, I mean, we talk about the all those
- 48:52Jacksonville, the Jacksonville schools edel raid.
- 48:55I mean, yeah. Atlantic and all those places
- 48:57down there and there are numerous ones, they have an
- 49:00alumni. So it's one of those things
- 49:01where It's like call up David Clowney.
- 49:04Hey, finally like this kid. There you go.
- 49:07There's your connection. David Cline is on my mother can
- 49:10need to go talk to the kid. The other piece that I don't
- 49:13think this is shocking thing. This is just a day and age where
- 49:15in is, he talked about two things.
- 49:19He talked about the six hour radius is because that's a
- 49:21drive-in. Yeah, six hours anywhere you
- 49:26leave it. You know.
- 49:28You want to go see somebody for a weekend.
- 49:31You leave at 3:00 in the afternoon, you there?
- 49:34But before the middle of the night, you have multiple days to
- 49:37spend and get back to your home. And he talked about how
- 49:41important that was, especially for these young men to be able
- 49:44to have, and he made sure, he mention this, their parents,
- 49:47their coaches, their uncle's their family, their handlers,
- 49:51their trainers, to be able to come, see him during those tough
- 49:54times, that it's having a tough time in the all season.
- 49:59And you know let's say it's one of these kids who you know from
- 50:02Columbia South Carolina or Charleston getting the car were
- 50:05there in a day. Talk to him, get him straight
- 50:07come back. It's like Charlotte.
- 50:10Charlotte Area kids, you're talking about a less than the
- 50:12three hour drive. So I mean Richmond, three Beach
- 50:15for in and out, even the kids, he talked about, you know,
- 50:19cultivating those re cultivating those relationship up in
- 50:21Pennsylvania, with Harrisburg pits, Philly, Jersey, four, and
- 50:26a half, five and a half hour drives.
- 50:28Yeah. Easy in Easy roads in to
- 50:31Blacksburg and it's like it's like again, he understands the
- 50:35relationship piece that what you have it, where you can put
- 50:40people who this kid is comfortable around and they can
- 50:43get here. When we need them to, it's going
- 50:45to make that kids experience. A hell of a lot better.
- 50:47Absolutely, absolutely man. Alright, so the next thing he
- 50:53mentioned and again he had already shout it out.
- 50:55You've already shout-out. Needs he talked about how might
- 50:57Villa Grana was kind of put in charge of the fighting up,
- 51:01Virginia. As we mentioned, we've seen
- 51:02where the guys were and he went in their private.
- 51:06Have this conversation which is I love this because prize their
- 51:10boss, you tell the boss, whatever he wants to hear,
- 51:13right? He took the look Grana in and
- 51:17just kind of asked him. Where do you have the best
- 51:19relationship? and you know, I think that's why
- 51:24we're seeing where we're seeing certain guys at because, you
- 51:29know, Coach Compton hitting us up here.
- 51:33Huge things to have the players having their people present.
- 51:36Yeah. Massive.
- 51:38Because I'm but you know, he basically was trying to find the
- 51:43lagrange's goal of that meeting was find Connections in cinnamon
- 51:48there and I think that's big because it when you look at how
- 51:52the state's been divided up, you're seeing you guys that have
- 51:57had success in those areas before you're seeing mines down
- 51:59in the beach, you know? Got cheated on the peninsula.
- 52:04You got Bowing in the DMV you got you guys are really getting
- 52:10put where they kind of have a footprint.
- 52:12You got JC in the 804. He's had some solid success
- 52:15recruiting guys in the 804 and JC probably in terms of knowing
- 52:21the lay of the land, probably as good or better of anybody on the
- 52:25staff. So he can kind of fill in the
- 52:28gaps where some, we're some, maybe some other guys are not
- 52:30quite as strong. So That's why you have a guy
- 52:33like Jayceon staff aside from the Virginia Tech connections,
- 52:36aside from how good he is on the field.
- 52:41Yeah. It's true.
- 52:43So the way the state was divided up and then you know the the
- 52:49last piece you know on this sort of high school recruiting and
- 52:53we've already mentioned it with the photos and powder.
- 52:56It seems like there's conversations it's not just what
- 52:59coach by said we don't want to walk in and just give a
- 53:01handshake and a smile on the picture and we want to get to
- 53:05know Everybody at the school. So I mentioned earlier JC was in
- 53:10LC Birds building talking with an old basketball player that he
- 53:14went to school with you. You they were talking to
- 53:18principles. It's like, if you get to know
- 53:21where these kids are from, it's it's more likely going to help
- 53:25you out in the long run, you know, it's, you know, have a
- 53:31hokey in the building and you're recruiting a kid, it'll help
- 53:34with another Hokies Talking Tool.
- 53:36Absolutely. And you know I don't think this
- 53:38is going to necessarily you know win us all the battles but at
- 53:44the same time it strategically puts us in as good a position as
- 53:48we can be in from Jump Street and then after that, you let the
- 53:52chips fall where they may. But I think the days of us not
- 53:57being in on a kid, early enough are gone not having the
- 54:01relationships with the coaches or the handlers to move forward
- 54:06with that or Own gone. And I think the days of us
- 54:10giving up on a guy, just because a big dog jumps in to the party
- 54:15are gone. I think we've got some.
- 54:18I think we got some guys on the staff.
- 54:19Who go to the nail with the big boys, it's hard.
- 54:22As they can and I love to see that now.
- 54:25Let's not, let's not do this. Brent prowls very upfront,
- 54:30talking about the transfer portal that he views it on equal
- 54:33footing. you know, with high school recruiting nowadays and,
- 54:40you know, I tend to agree with him because there's a, we talked
- 54:48about it earlier this month Grand.
- 54:50There's thousand kids in the pool know some of those kids
- 54:54allows kids can play. Probably a really good game of
- 54:58football, but they just need the opportunity.
- 55:02Yeah, I mean you're not going to find, you know, you're not going
- 55:05to feel your roster out that way but you know the transfer portal
- 55:08is going to be your your whole filler.
- 55:11Your immediate impact player on occasion.
- 55:15And that's what he's seems like he's going to use it.
- 55:18As obviously talked about, you know, he was happy with kind of
- 55:21the progress. We've made on that front too.
- 55:24Kind of close out. The start of the spring
- 55:27semester. You've got four already end you
- 55:30know, possibly two more. You're coming through.
- 55:32So that's really big. And I think we're only going to
- 55:37see more of that as we get into spring workouts, we get into
- 55:40spring practice, we're going to start seeing a little bit more,
- 55:43probably attrition from the current roster.
- 55:45Your start seeing some more movement in the transfer portal
- 55:49as we close out spring and then get into summer workouts.
- 55:52So look for that. He said he expected another wave
- 55:56after Spring ball. So you know buckle up for some
- 55:59more portal chaos guys because it's going to To be coming?
- 56:03Yep, because you mentioned he talked about, you know, talked
- 56:07about having you know the winter workouts and spring.
- 56:12We're going to eat some people out.
- 56:13You going to eat some people like no, this isn't what I want
- 56:15to do. I'd rather go elsewhere.
- 56:19And, you know, we've already got four in You know, two y, two,
- 56:24quarterbacks two wide receivers are there potentially more
- 56:27coming, we hope so because we know we're talking about in a
- 56:30few minutes here. There's the holes.
- 56:32We feel like need to be filled and it's going to be interesting
- 56:35to see how they fill them. Now, the other piece that he
- 56:39talked about, was you cover crew.
- 56:41He basically that seems like he's for that.
- 56:44He specifically mentioned Lackawanna, do code seems like
- 56:48like a wanted to be T. Let's go ahead and get them
- 56:50going. Looks like the transfer portal,
- 56:54the Juco, these are guys who have been, they're older,
- 56:58they're more probably physically developed in high school kids
- 57:02and to me it's something we have not taken advantage of as much.
- 57:06I know Brianna Marie in a more are no or two, but it's like
- 57:11these are on previously. Yeah, to Dorado ever forget him.
- 57:16Ha ha ha. But it's like there's the
- 57:19opportunity with these guys, the same way and if these guys are
- 57:22true coming in as Juniors. Well, if they don't have the
- 57:25football sharks yet, right? But they have the physical body.
- 57:28You have three years with them. They can rush for you.
- 57:33Yeah. You have you have a lot more
- 57:34opportunity. You know, you talked about, you
- 57:36know, you got the high school kids for four to five.
- 57:38You get the Juco kids for 2, to 3, 3 to 4, 4 to get the the
- 57:42portal kids, usually 4122. So, and in the portal sometimes
- 57:47even More obviously. Now with the one-time transfer
- 57:49rule, you're getting some some true freshman coming in some
- 57:52redshirt freshman, some you know, Redshirt sophomore.
- 57:56So you're getting you know, three sometimes three to four
- 57:58years, even with those transfers.
- 58:02So it's going to be really interesting to see what I think.
- 58:04The Juco area is something that probably has been underutilized
- 58:09historically by Virginia Tech. I think, you know, you don't
- 58:13want to see a ton of players coming coming that route every
- 58:17But you know, I think there's probably an opportunity for one
- 58:20maybe two excited Winkle that's a handful of cycle.
- 58:25Somewhere between 225 okay and at position not necessarily need
- 58:30but positions either the depth where it's like we're going to
- 58:35go look at this offensive lineman from this Juco, he's six
- 58:38foot four, he's already 310 pounds.
- 58:41We don't need to worry about him.
- 58:42Getting the weight room and gain weight.
- 58:44What we need to figure out real quick is can we teach him
- 58:47technique and get him on the field?
- 58:49Not this year. But next year?
- 58:51Where you swing guard? He's a swing tackle, whatever.
- 58:55Yeah and no it's like give these guys a chance cause some of
- 58:59these guys go there because they don't have the grades and then
- 59:03they work themselves into good saying give the guy's a chance.
- 59:07Sure, Brian. We're gonna hit this real quick.
- 59:10We don't have the spring game yet, but basically cry said
- 59:13we're pretty close. Do you imagine we get something
- 59:17at the latest next weekend, next weekend.
- 59:20Yeah, I could be wrong, but I think we get something by the
- 59:24end of the month. So, So you just need to gain
- 59:26date. It's it all out.
- 59:28So we need painted ship. I don't even care.
- 59:30What spring practice starts yet. I will in like a week, but just
- 59:34give me the game date. Please put it on a good date
- 59:38where you want to know. We want to put it on the
- 59:40calendar because we will be there.
- 59:41We are trying to be there. You can guarantee I ain't
- 59:45guaranteeing it, I got three. All right, um, last piece is
- 59:50Braun was last two pieces. Let's look first of all, you've
- 59:55mentioned before, we're not a mom-and-pop anymore.
- 59:59Stewart, Carter director of football equipment comes in out
- 1:00:03of Penn State Cami Nation. Looks like she's gonna be hired.
- 1:00:06And some sort of recruiting on campus role.
- 1:00:09He OG of the weight room is back, Jarrett Ferguson looking
- 1:00:13Like, he's going to be hired as one of the assistant strength
- 1:00:15conditions coach. And then, one sort of
- 1:00:17interesting piece Shayne Graham was offered a position by coach
- 1:00:21pry. Looks like Shane's going to take
- 1:00:23some time to step away from coaching, but you know, it's
- 1:00:28like that. Support staff, just keeps
- 1:00:30getting bigger. Yeah.
- 1:00:31And Shane talked about, you know, he said one of the upsides
- 1:00:35of that he's not on this staff but the fact he's not on any
- 1:00:39other staff is that he can, you know, let his hokey flag fly A
- 1:00:43lot more freely now, right. He can get up to games.
- 1:00:47He can you know, actively root for the Holyoke.
- 1:00:51He's on. Yeah, Twitter, a little bit
- 1:00:53stronger than he has a recent years.
- 1:00:55So I think that's that's something in his comfort zone.
- 1:00:58I wish him well, in whatever. The next venture is for him, and
- 1:01:02look forward to maybe catching him up at a game.
- 1:01:04Sometime this fall. But yeah, I mean the moves were
- 1:01:09making off the field is definitely, you know, that
- 1:01:12signal that we're not mom-and-pop anymore.
- 1:01:16We're running this thing like a business because it is it's a
- 1:01:21big Dollar business at that. We're sit the last piece here
- 1:01:26before we go to break because we're an hour and we're still in
- 1:01:30the presser. Does it shock you that someone
- 1:01:33like Brent Pride leans on his dad?
- 1:01:36Or someone like James Franklin for trusting, a lot of the
- 1:01:40decision-making. Not because, when he talks about
- 1:01:43how he built his staff, and how he plans to recruit Virginia,
- 1:01:48he's talking about communication and relationships.
- 1:01:51So, obviously, if that's important to you the person and
- 1:01:56the people that you're to lean on is going to be your Mentor in
- 1:01:59the sport and your father. So, I mean, it doesn't surprise
- 1:02:02me that he's reaching out to those.
- 1:02:04Those people in his Circle and leaning on them when it comes to
- 1:02:08some of those bigger decisions. Nope.
- 1:02:11Not at all. And I think it's pretty cool.
- 1:02:13He, he mentioned that what? Every wide receiver coach
- 1:02:17interviewed, he talked with his dad about, I'm assuming his dad
- 1:02:20as the background and wider scooter and they say he sat in
- 1:02:24on some of the interviews. So could you imagine like doing
- 1:02:27the zoom? And the hell is that?
- 1:02:30It's Dad. Wide receivers for 40 years
- 1:02:36like, oh, hey, that's cool. Also new here.
- 1:02:40Alright, brown one last piece. If you have not seen folks, the
- 1:02:45salaries of these guys, I'm going to, I'm going to pass out
- 1:02:50or specify, go to Tech Sidelines, and look at David
- 1:02:53Cunningham's article on this. It is from the 14th.
- 1:02:59So just a few days ago, lazy. It all out.
- 1:03:03Five point two, five million by point two million run paying
- 1:03:08coordinators. Both over 800,000 lowest-paid
- 1:03:12positional coach at 275. Basically right at two and a
- 1:03:18half million for each side of the ball.
- 1:03:20Yep, Big Bowl pick. Take boy moves and you know I
- 1:03:24like kind of how things are structured.
- 1:03:26I know we had talked a little bit about you know some folks
- 1:03:29were shocked at that bar of hit up at 8:25 for a first-time
- 1:03:34coordinator and I'm telling you and I've set it on here, we
- 1:03:37talked about it before, the starting price for a coordinator
- 1:03:41at power 5 is now eight hundred thousand dollars.
- 1:03:44Yep. That's the starting price.
- 1:03:48So, I mean, we're just above that at 8:25 Bowens, just just a
- 1:03:52little higher than that at 8:50. And, and that again, that's the
- 1:03:56going rate for for big-time coordinators.
- 1:04:02Now, we could go and get another Braddock or Nelson and we can
- 1:04:04pay them, five hundred thousand dollars.
- 1:04:08But we don't want to go back to that, do we?
- 1:04:10Nope. I don't think we ever want that.
- 1:04:13Yeah, so I'm good with the way everything is structured here,
- 1:04:18you know, you got the running game coordinator and passing
- 1:04:22game coordinator making a little bit more.
- 1:04:25You got defensive recruiting coordinator Derek Jones making a
- 1:04:29little bit more position wise as is JC price as associate head
- 1:04:35coach. But you know, structure top to
- 1:04:38bottom, I really like the way way the salary set up.
- 1:04:42It gives us a little more flexibility for some of those
- 1:04:44off the field roles and analysts roles.
- 1:04:47Some of those are still coming down the pike.
- 1:04:50So look for maybe a couple more hires in that capacity in the
- 1:04:53coming weeks. Yeah, there is.
- 1:04:56And again they talked about, you know, old staff was 3.5 million,
- 1:05:02we're over 5 million. Now we're basically what second
- 1:05:05highest in the They were trying to again.
- 1:05:11The what is it? The you always say the boats
- 1:05:13rise ships, you know, high tide raises All Ships or some shit.
- 1:05:19You go that and this is what it is.
- 1:05:22This is your High Tide football and if you're paying those guys,
- 1:05:26the expectation is we're going to make more money there, we're
- 1:05:29going to be in bigger game, going to get bigger contracts,
- 1:05:32and that's, that's kind of what it is.
- 1:05:35Again, go check out David's article on textile on very,
- 1:05:38worth your time. Now Brian, before we get Get
- 1:05:40into some more topics tonight. We are going to take a quick
- 1:05:43pause for a message from our digital Partners as we take a

- 1:06:09Dash report now. Back to the episode.
- 1:06:14All right. So Brian, let's look.
- 1:06:15Next let's talk about the portal real quick because obviously
- 1:06:18there's been some movement there and in the last few days, since
- 1:06:23the last time we talked, we picked up to Pretty One really
- 1:06:26big commitment and then one kind of makes sense commitment.
- 1:06:29Let's start with Jacob, Lew wide receiver out of Temple. 6-foot
- 1:06:36185, back in 2019. Absolutely blew up 95.
- 1:06:42Ian's 1067. Excuse me, thousand 67 yards
- 1:06:48over 11 has tapered off in the last few years but you know,
- 1:06:54kind of seeing what he had to work with it Temple.
- 1:06:56Quarterback wise, it makes sense.
- 1:07:00But he's coming here and I don't know how this is.
- 1:07:04But / 24/7. He's rated higher than Tavian
- 1:07:07Robinson III. Can't see that.
- 1:07:09But how do you feel about Jaden blue Comin?
- 1:07:13Yeah, I mean, For the transfers. It's really hard to, I think put
- 1:07:18a gauge on that just because there's a disparity in the level
- 1:07:23of competition to a degree. There's a disparity in kind of
- 1:07:29who They matched up against the play, the play calling the play
- 1:07:34Styles. It's a little bit harder there
- 1:07:37to get a good gauge on that overall, Italian, Talent
- 1:07:40ability. But I mean, I think it's a good
- 1:07:43good, good commit for us because it definitely shows up a
- 1:07:47position that was kind of bleeding a little bit as a
- 1:07:51result of transfers, as a result of a couple guys moving on.
- 1:07:56So Looking forward to see what Jaden can do.
- 1:07:59I think he immediately has some sort of role in the two deep.
- 1:08:04We'll see if he's pushing for a starting role.
- 1:08:06I think he probably will. So, you know, we'll see on that
- 1:08:09one. And then, you know, we had
- 1:08:11another one, Stephen Gosnell. Benji's little Benji's Big
- 1:08:15Brother, Benji's Big, Brother UNC transfer That's big because,
- 1:08:23you know, you're eating off a inner conference rival Rivals
- 1:08:27plate there, you know, I know he wasn't getting a whole lot of
- 1:08:31push, but it, but anytime you can, you can steal one from that
- 1:08:37school down south. It's a good day.
- 1:08:41It is. And, you know, that's not a
- 1:08:43little bit bigger than blaming 62.
- 1:08:45He's to 10. So a little bit more body of a
- 1:08:48receiver. He was a three-star when he came
- 1:08:50out, he Has not gotten much playtime at all down in North
- 1:08:53Carolina and then obviously with big brother little brother
- 1:08:57coming here, it's really cool to see.
- 1:09:00It's really cool to see again, Brothers on the same team and
- 1:09:04it's going to be really interesting to see what he looks
- 1:09:06like again being that bigger body and I just kind of go back
- 1:09:10through like Jalen Jones Duane laufen and some of the guys
- 1:09:13already here he's kind of going to be the biggest body of old.
- 1:09:17All of them unless I'm missing somebody but I'm gonna say yeah.
- 1:09:21No, I mean, he's in terms of guys that got serious run.
- 1:09:24I mean, he's definitely a guy that, you know, it could
- 1:09:29potentially have a role outside just because he is a bigger
- 1:09:31body, probably a little bit more of a possession.
- 1:09:34Receiver, a stick mover than I got, it's going to be a big
- 1:09:37impact in the downfield game. So you got to you got to have
- 1:09:42guys like that. I think, you know, size-wise I
- 1:09:45guess pay youths, the only one probably in the same ballpark,
- 1:09:48right? But different receiver.
- 1:09:50Yeah. Different, different type of
- 1:09:52receiver, for sure. Same body Master well, you know,
- 1:09:57definitely, it's one of those, we'll see.
- 1:10:03That's why we want to know when the spring game is because you
- 1:10:06get to go to the spring game. And you see these guys play,
- 1:10:09sometimes things just pop out at you different.
- 1:10:12All right, hon to of our former quarterbacks committed in the
- 1:10:15last few weeks to play elsewhere knocks.
- 1:10:18Hey them going to head down to FCS McNeese, State and
- 1:10:20Louisiana. Anna and starting quarterback
- 1:10:23last year Braxton Burmeister goes back out, west.
- 1:10:26San Diego State to a G5. I don't think that there's any
- 1:10:31shock with the knocks Caterham one, and maybe a little shocked
- 1:10:36with Braxton. I thought he might land at a
- 1:10:38power five somewhere. But, you know, by all means, you
- 1:10:42know, San Diego State football isn't exactly wretched.
- 1:10:45So, What any thoughts on? Where they landed or did they
- 1:10:50land exactly where they should land?
- 1:10:52I mean, I think not Knox. Has a good fit there, you know,
- 1:10:56good for him at Landing, their FCS McNeese State.
- 1:11:00I think that's going to be a good move for him.
- 1:11:01I think he probably can get some, get some run their
- 1:11:04Braxton, it'll be interesting to see.
- 1:11:07A lot of people were talking about, if he was going to stick
- 1:11:10with our five, you might have to change positions, you know, ends
- 1:11:15up San Diego State, Mike Have to change positions will see again
- 1:11:19it's going to depend on what the coaching staff has in store for
- 1:11:24him, but I think probably it's a pretty good fit for him being a
- 1:11:30kid out there from California. So kind of gets back a little
- 1:11:33closer to home and you know, gets an opportunity to still be
- 1:11:38a starting quarterback. Yeah, it's it again, San Diego
- 1:11:41State. This year, went to a bowl game
- 1:11:44was in the Mountain West championship game.
- 1:11:46So he's Going to a good program. It's not like he's going to the
- 1:11:51low of the low, so good for him, you know.
- 1:11:55Well, Tokyo is a hokie best of luck to both those guys.
- 1:11:58All right, Brian will give you three names in order?
- 1:12:03Tell me, and we're excited about all three but your level of
- 1:12:07excitement and important to the team.
- 1:12:09This year that these guys are staying Armani.
- 1:12:12Chaplain confirms, he's returning Johnny and Jordan gets
- 1:12:15a 60-year and Drake Delia It's a six-year order.
- 1:12:21One, two, three importance. I'm going to put, and it's just
- 1:12:26by a narrow margin. Johnny Jordan at the top here
- 1:12:29because I was insanely concerned about the center position.
- 1:12:35Let me go into this offseason it's me Jeff Allen we're looking
- 1:12:39at Jack hollifield or somebody transferring in so getting
- 1:12:42Johnny Jordan back for a six-year that's huge in my
- 1:12:46opinion. I'm looking forward to see him
- 1:12:49in a starting role this year. I'm looking forward to seeing
- 1:12:53him kind of being that quarterback of the defense
- 1:12:57offensive line. I mean, excuse me, I'm looking
- 1:12:59forward to that. So I think he's going to be
- 1:13:01that's probably the most important there.
- 1:13:04We're a little bit deeper at corner, but I'm going to put our
- 1:13:07money Chapman at number two. But put Chapman and number two,
- 1:13:14I like his his game he's got some things he needs to clean
- 1:13:19up. He needs to be a little bit
- 1:13:21better with his hips but I think that's something that we can
- 1:13:27work on. But I think overall I mean he is
- 1:13:30a really talented player and I think that him coming back
- 1:13:34definitely takes a little bit of sting out of losing a couple
- 1:13:38players at that position in the offseason.
- 1:13:42And yeah, I think it's close but I'll put drinking three in and
- 1:13:47that's only because of the guys that we have coming in at that
- 1:13:51position with this incoming Freshman Class, A couple of
- 1:13:56which are getting a full spring heading in there so but I think
- 1:14:01Drake's going to play a big role for us in in 2022.
- 1:14:05I just think the other two were just a hair more important in
- 1:14:08terms of the positions that they're playing.
- 1:14:11Okay, I hear you and obviously you have your number one tight
- 1:14:16end already right with Gallo although we could see okay what
- 1:14:22are we going to do different under, you know ball, you're
- 1:14:25definitely going to see too tight and sets.
- 1:14:27You might see through Titans, you are.
- 1:14:28But the whole thing is it's always been more than Joker.
- 1:14:31Where you see with phone. At least at Penn State, you've
- 1:14:34got to be a good of blockers. You have to be a receive.
- 1:14:37You never had a lot of Joker's up there from oof.
- 1:14:40Just second all those guys you're going to block and it's
- 1:14:44kind of drink sweetness. Hopefully I think drinks going
- 1:14:47to be used more kind of like Dalton was in this new offense,
- 1:14:52a little bit more just because he's going to be asked to block
- 1:14:58from motion. A lot more if it He's a real
- 1:15:02eating out a lot more versus being in line.
- 1:15:05I think that'll play a little bit more to his strengths and I
- 1:15:07think it'll be better for the offense.
- 1:15:10All right, one last piece 2022, recruiting unit, preferred
- 1:15:16walk-on from IMG and Erica solow.
- 1:15:18The safety. I don't think it ever hurts to
- 1:15:21get anybody from that school. If they're water boys needed a
- 1:15:27scholarship. Potentially, take it, it might
- 1:15:29be the best water. Boy, you get.
- 1:15:30Just because they have that many good players coming out but you
- 1:15:37know we've seen more PWS, you know offered here and there any
- 1:15:44thoughts on this kid or just it's a preferred walk-on.
- 1:15:47Let's hope he Sam Rogers. I mean, yeah, you hope that he's
- 1:15:53able to contribute at some point down the road but, you know,
- 1:15:57anytime you can again, establish relationships like that with a
- 1:16:00school. Like, I am G.
- 1:16:03I think that's important to Foster those relationships.
- 1:16:06And, you know, I like I said, I hope he does well, but like you
- 1:16:12said, I am G anytime you can get a IMG kid on your roster, take
- 1:16:17that opportunity, take the opportunity and if anything What
- 1:16:20we talked about here in the states or in the state of
- 1:16:23Virginia, it's building a relationship, getting getting
- 1:16:26the preferred walk-on kid a scholarship.
- 1:16:29It might be in two years, there's a high for star and
- 1:16:34because of that early relationship building, he comes
- 1:16:38all right, Brian. Let's switch gears a little bit
- 1:16:40for a few seconds here. And talk about the Hokies hoop
- 1:16:42struggles, obviously the last two games have been wins.
- 1:16:49It all In the Irish, when the stats I'm about to give you kind
- 1:16:54of destroyed tonight, we survived the NC State blowing a
- 1:16:5917-point lead, but it kind of falls into everything and I just
- 1:17:03got bored last week and, you know, this team is a top, 15%
- 1:17:07scoring defense and with 300 plus teams, were roughly a top,
- 1:17:1140 scorn D. That's every game, with the
- 1:17:15exception of the Notre, Dame game.
- 1:17:16We've been holding people, right?
- 1:17:19All right, with the exception of Notre Dame, game where a bottom
- 1:17:23third scoring offense which is really tough to swallow.
- 1:17:27When we know how good of a offense in mind, Mike, young is
- 1:17:32and like tonight, Ron I told you before we got home we were
- 1:17:39shooting over 70% from two-point range.
- 1:17:42The reason they were in that game is we could hit the side,
- 1:17:44broad side of a barn with a 3-point shot tonight.
- 1:17:47Yep. Couldn't hit anything.
- 1:17:49It was like 26 percent. I think was the percentages up
- 1:17:54in that kind of drives you insane especially when you have
- 1:17:57such a big lead in the only way the team can come back in is you
- 1:18:01taking lower percentage shots? Which the 3-pointer this year
- 1:18:04just has been. Yeah, it's weird because we
- 1:18:08thought coming into this year that the three-pointer was going
- 1:18:11to be the strength of the team and it absolutely is went the
- 1:18:15other direction between naheem. Going from three storm
- 1:18:20struggling from three everybody, you know, Couture, having a
- 1:18:25couple off games, it's been, you know, hit or miss you know,
- 1:18:30thankfully we've had some other things work in our favor
- 1:18:33especially our defense. But we're struggling right now
- 1:18:39on the on the from the three-point line.
- 1:18:42We got to figure out a way to Kind of shake out of that funk a
- 1:18:46little bit because I mean we know most of these guys can hit
- 1:18:50the three. Yeah, I mean, we've seen naheem
- 1:18:53do it before. We've seen storm Murphy, do it.
- 1:18:56I'll be at in a different League.
- 1:19:00You know, they definitely have the capacity to do these things
- 1:19:043015 to like, combine those cabinets, you can't win many
- 1:19:08games. Especially when, you know, we
- 1:19:10always a lot of people think we get destroyed on the boards
- 1:19:13tonight. We dominated.
- 1:19:15Boards in most games we're right at that razor thin.
- 1:19:18It's like a it's a differential of one and, you know, as far as
- 1:19:23like turnovers go we roughly are winning that battle every night
- 1:19:28somewhere between two and three. But I think my overall
- 1:19:33assessment, it's what these last two games where they were
- 1:19:36nail-biters. This is a good team.
- 1:19:39I think we're good basketball team.
- 1:19:41I think if we got on the tournament we could be anybody
- 1:19:44or lose to anybody. We have the razor thinnest of
- 1:19:48margins. And tonight for example when you
- 1:19:51cannot hit a three especially with a 17-point lead and you
- 1:19:56keep shooting because I felt like every time I looked at the
- 1:20:00television between doing stuff around the house here, we were
- 1:20:02taking another three and missing it in several times.
- 1:20:08Like there was the there was it was not necessarily a super
- 1:20:11contested shot but kind of a probably contested shot 10 feet
- 1:20:16it in and you're giving it up for a where you are not making
- 1:20:20anything from, and that makes me lose my damn mind.
- 1:20:24Oh yeah, it got better when months got really aggressive at
- 1:20:27going to the rack, whether it was himself or kind of attacking
- 1:20:34the paint and then finding a loom or somebody else.
- 1:20:38You're down under the basket for an easy layup, or an easy dunk.
- 1:20:42That's when the offense was looking, its best.
- 1:20:45It was looking, it's worse. When we were again, reliant on
- 1:20:48taking kind of open threes. Good looks, but not necessarily
- 1:20:54wide open, well somewhere, while and some work, some were wide
- 1:20:58open and I mean there were a couple that were just just
- 1:21:02missed and you know, some of the problem is that we're getting
- 1:21:06too late into the shot clock. Because storms have a little bit
- 1:21:10of trouble. Getting the ball up quick
- 1:21:12getting into the offense. So that that hurts with the shot
- 1:21:16selection, you can't necessarily throw it in the post and kind of
- 1:21:19wait for things to happen. You got to do a little bit more
- 1:21:21around the perimeter so that that's kind of hurt the shot
- 1:21:24selection side of things. But in general, we just need to
- 1:21:28make more threes. Better easy.
- 1:21:33And again that we know we know they have the capacity to do it.
- 1:21:36That's why this is frustrating, you know, that's why it's
- 1:21:41frustrating because we've seen these guys make these shots in
- 1:21:45these situations before. And I think it's also
- 1:21:48frustrating, the fact that you said this last episode Mi kyung,
- 1:21:52doesn't have the quick hook for Shooters.
- 1:21:54Yeah, like too much again, the two guys tonight Murphy would
- 1:21:59probably be out there regardless but I mean, what was to, That's
- 1:22:03that's killer, and he was 3 of 15 in general.
- 1:22:07And I mean do you mean not Heinrich the he what I think
- 1:22:11months? Yeah, not bad.
- 1:22:12It's getting late, folks, I'm tired, you're good.
- 1:22:15All right, couple real quick things before we call it a
- 1:22:20night. Brian cfp expanding playoff
- 1:22:23talks stalled, not a shocker and Jeffrey got punted a couple
- 1:22:30times. I was like, Probably not getting
- 1:22:32it where it's going to be ready. In two years, we're going to
- 1:22:34head down this way, at Albany 25.
- 1:22:36Yeah, 2025 is probably where we're looking at now, but Jim
- 1:22:41Phillips ACC commissioner came out and basically made a
- 1:22:43statement being the first to says, now is not the time to
- 1:22:48make this change. And I think some of us get
- 1:22:52upset. Then reading Dennis, Dodds
- 1:22:55article further basically, every ACC coach said, no, now is not
- 1:22:59the time that they're way too many.
- 1:23:01The things going on with the new transfer portal with the ni L
- 1:23:07deals with so many other things going on, we don't need one more
- 1:23:12big change. I tend to disagree because those
- 1:23:20things are done. Those things are done, the NCAA
- 1:23:23completely dropped the ball on this but then I looked a little
- 1:23:28further in It seems like big-time on ni L, but you know,
- 1:23:33we have discussed that enough, we don't need to.
- 1:23:35Oh yeah, to be continued. I think the portal piece is
- 1:23:39we're going to finally see it to fruition with a normal year, how
- 1:23:42it's going to work, and we're going to, it's almost like we
- 1:23:45want to see how this works a couple years down the road
- 1:23:47because, you know, if we're getting kids in there, trying to
- 1:23:51get back out and trying to get waivers, is it even worth it?
- 1:23:55But we saw the we've seen the portal in a true.
- 1:23:59Covid year than we've seen the portal in this transition year,
- 1:24:02but we haven't really seen how the portal Works in a normally
- 1:24:08in a normal year where there's not, you know, super seniors and
- 1:24:11all this shit where you got to completely clear roster and
- 1:24:15things like that. I mean it's definitely going to
- 1:24:18be Different than what it was in the past.
- 1:24:23But I think there's going to be some settling in once people get
- 1:24:25a better grasp of of the portal. Yeah, but I mean, you know, I've
- 1:24:32said it before, I've got no problem with the way the portal
- 1:24:34is set up, but like anything, when you get more freedom, you
- 1:24:39know, there's also more risk associated with exercising that
- 1:24:43freedom right, what? So, you know, when you, when you
- 1:24:46get in the portal, it might be something where you don't get
- 1:24:49the Calls you're wanting and now you're, you're kind of in no
- 1:24:53man's land. Exactly.
- 1:24:55You're in purgatory. So that's that's the fear for
- 1:24:59some of these kids and so the hope is that people in their
- 1:25:02Circle or giving them good information, right?
- 1:25:04That's the most important thing. Now, the other big piece that
- 1:25:09now, it kind of made sense to why they're rejecting it.
- 1:25:14If you go ahead and expand the playoffs.
- 1:25:16Now it's currently under contract with the ESPN.
- 1:25:20If you go ahead and expand it, that means you're expanding to
- 1:25:23ESPN only control. If you're not the SEC, what do
- 1:25:29you want? If you're not the SEC, you want
- 1:25:33a little bit more coverage, agnostic situation for the
- 1:25:39college football. Playoff if there's going to be
- 1:25:42potentially eight games, leading up to the semis in the National
- 1:25:47five, in the national championship game. if you are
- 1:25:51the ACC, the Big 12, the packed the pac-10 Pac-12, g5s Big Ten
- 1:25:58even even though the Big Ten has numerous contracts you want to
- 1:26:02get everybody involved in taking these games, no more money, more
- 1:26:08exposure and essentially Don't let ESPN monopolize it because
- 1:26:16they've got the Monopoly on the bowls, he got thrown up on the
- 1:26:19bowls. I think, what, what this move I
- 1:26:22think signals is that they weren't ready to move forward
- 1:26:27with the ESPN situation, especially after the SEC,
- 1:26:32realignment, and how that really kind of threw off the balance of
- 1:26:36the conference's, once they saw that, they're like, all right,
- 1:26:41let's, let's, let's approach this.
- 1:26:43A Little bit slower and let's see if we can get some things
- 1:26:47leveraged in our favor as we move forward with this before we
- 1:26:51sign off on something that we're stuck with.
- 1:26:53For a good number of years, probably five to ten years.
- 1:26:57Yeah. So it'll be interesting to see
- 1:26:59how the talks pick up. I still think we're going to
- 1:27:01wind up at 12, eventually, probably 2025, but who knows?
- 1:27:06Now, speaking of national championship games, Brian.
- 1:27:09Obviously, you and I both watched it, you On that, pick
- 1:27:14them from Georgia, outright laying the points.
- 1:27:19But did that game prove to you? Brian that kind of an old-school
- 1:27:24mentality. Can still win the national
- 1:27:26championship. Or is it the reason old school
- 1:27:30mentality? One is Georgia has 26 NFL
- 1:27:34players on defense and even they can slow down, Alabama, when
- 1:27:38Alabama's missing a wide receiver.
- 1:27:42I think it's a little bit of both.
- 1:27:44I think if You don't get an injury for Alabama.
- 1:27:49It's probably at least a different game.
- 1:27:52I don't know if it's necessarily still the same outcome, but I
- 1:27:54think it's a different game, but I think George has showed that
- 1:28:00in the right circumstances, you're going with that
- 1:28:03old-school mentality of Defense first controlling offense, not
- 1:28:07necessarily needing to score a ton of points but this be
- 1:28:11efficient with the football. I think that showed that that
- 1:28:15can still win but I think it was also a unique scenario because
- 1:28:20of some of the things that happen during the game.
- 1:28:23Also unique that there's guys like Jordan Davis that literally
- 1:28:26it takes two guys to block him every single time for these.
- 1:28:30That much of a man absolutely but it was great to see, Georgia
- 1:28:34win and kind of break the monotony of Alabama.
- 1:28:39So you know, we are right now. What are we grind?
- 1:28:43Ten days after the national championship, right?
- 1:28:46Yeah. 360 55 days or something like that.
- 1:28:53Now, I'm way off for like, six months until seven months.
- 1:28:58Yeah, it's late and I've it math.
- 1:29:01Math is a bitch. It's just what it is.
- 1:29:05We're like, seven months until kickoff.
- 1:29:07Can't wait. Can't wait for Spring ball and
- 1:29:10the rest of this offseason run. Hi Ron, anything breaking while
- 1:29:16we've been out here? I don't see anything funny when
- 1:29:18I think we're good to kick it. All right.
