- 0:00Speaker 1: This is the Draft Prospect Review Podcast on Patriots dot
- 0:03Speaker 1: Com Radio. Welcome to the NFL Draft. The Draft Prospect
- 0:07Speaker 1: Review Podcast is your source for all the latest news
- 0:10Speaker 1: and information on the NFL Draft. The new England Patriots
- 0:13Speaker 1: flag now here to preview the offensive lineman. The writers
- 0:16Speaker 1: of Patriots dot Com Time once again for another draft
- 0:19Speaker 1: podcast preview offensive line. You know my favorite micd so
- 0:22Speaker 1: offensive lineman. The big guys up front. Those are the
- 0:25Speaker 1: guys that make the engine go, don't you know, the
- 0:28Speaker 1: big guys up front on both sides of the ball.
- 0:30Speaker 1: It's all about line play, said no one anywhere ever,
- 0:33Speaker 1: except for Mike dou sou defensive line. I could get
- 0:37Speaker 1: at the offensive lines a little bit of a slog,
- 0:38Speaker 1: but hey, position of need for the Patriots. They ted
- 0:42Speaker 1: Harris has gone, Shack Mason got traded, so so definitely
- 0:45Speaker 1: need a guard and then you know a tackle. You
- 0:47Speaker 1: brought Trump brownback, but Isaiah went entering the last year
- 0:50Speaker 1: of his deal, so you have some injury concerns with
- 0:52Speaker 1: the two guys that are there. Justin Harran showed some promise,
- 0:55Speaker 1: but I think it's a long term need as well.
- 0:57Speaker 1: So I think a lot of these positions are on
- 0:59Speaker 1: the table for them early and often. Absolutely, and we
- 1:03Speaker 1: are wrapping up offense today. This is our final position
- 1:06Speaker 1: on offense only because I couldn't put it off any longer.
- 1:08Speaker 1: We will do the offensive line. And as has been
- 1:10Speaker 1: the case throughout our twenty twenty two draft A preview podcasts,
- 1:15Speaker 1: Matise Bauman is with us as well, probably not as
- 1:19Speaker 1: eager on this one Mike as he has been with
- 1:21Speaker 1: you know, running backs and wide receivers, and I don't know,
- 1:24Speaker 1: he's pretty excited upstairs all the Glen response. But tease,
- 1:27Speaker 1: what say you of the Specifically, it's start off with tackle.
- 1:30Speaker 1: We'll spend most of our time with tackle. And I
- 1:32Speaker 1: think Mike is right. I think this is an area
- 1:35Speaker 1: that the Patriots could absolutely call upon at pick number
- 1:39Speaker 1: twenty one. Offensive line, as Mike mapped out, is in
- 1:43Speaker 1: need for the Patriots. Any of these guys stick out
- 1:46Speaker 1: to you at the top, Definitely, Evan Neil. I mean
- 1:48Speaker 1: he's just a behemoth six seven, three hundred and thirty
- 1:51Speaker 1: seven pounds, very quick for his overall size. I think
- 1:53Speaker 1: that might be one of the number one picks off
- 1:55Speaker 1: the board. I don't know how he wasted three hundred
- 1:56Speaker 1: and thirty seven pounds and he's just looking at him.
- 1:58Speaker 1: I mean there's not much fat at all on him,
- 2:00Speaker 1: no bad weight at all. Another Alabama guy, but absolutely
- 2:04Speaker 1: him and if if he could also be a potential
- 2:09Speaker 1: you know, top five pick. I think those two guys,
- 2:11Speaker 1: those guys top ten anyway, And I agree with you
- 2:15Speaker 1: another thing that really stuck out, and not just with
- 2:17Speaker 1: these top two guys, and they clearly with the top
- 2:19Speaker 1: two guys, but um, a lot of nasty in some
- 2:22Speaker 1: of these guys. Just tossing dudes around after you know
- 2:26Speaker 1: at or as they say in the draft, draft speak
- 2:30Speaker 1: to the echo of the whistle. They like to play
- 2:32Speaker 1: to the echo of the whistle. I agree with you
- 2:34Speaker 1: guys about both of those players. Evan Neil, I think
- 2:38Speaker 1: is going to be another one on the long line
- 2:39Speaker 1: of just solid prospects coming out the Alabama offensive line.
- 2:44Speaker 1: But moving a little bit further down the line here,
- 2:47Speaker 1: there were reports last week that the Patriots had some
- 2:51Speaker 1: had one of the visits, one of the thirty visits
- 2:53Speaker 1: with Trevor Penning right, that was the the offensive him.
- 2:58Speaker 1: You know me, they are all blending together. Offensive. Where
- 3:01Speaker 1: do I tell you you're dead on, do it on
- 3:03Speaker 1: your own time, but this is my time, so I'm here.
- 3:05Speaker 1: I might as well talk about Penning a little bit.
- 3:08Speaker 1: My one concern there, And I don't know how you
- 3:10Speaker 1: guys felt about this. It's just the level of competition.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Just you watch the Northern Iowa tape and not that
- 3:17Speaker 1: we have extensive you know, catalogs of tape that we're watching,
- 3:20Speaker 1: but you see the highlights. He's so much bigger than
- 3:23Speaker 1: anybody else on the field. Yeah, and you just wonder,
- 3:26Speaker 1: you know, if if it was a little bit more
- 3:28Speaker 1: of an even playing field, which obviously it will be
- 3:30Speaker 1: next year, does the same kind of dominance, you know,
- 3:33Speaker 1: shine through. Yeah. I think he showed up well at
- 3:35Speaker 1: the Senior Bowl. I know, watching some of those practices,
- 3:37Speaker 1: he had a little extra business for everybody a little
- 3:40Speaker 1: after the whistle, getting guys, So you know, how's that
- 3:42Speaker 1: going to carry over as well? But but you gotta
- 3:44Speaker 1: love the attitude and I think, you know, depending on
- 3:47Speaker 1: what you look at. Again, a lot of these mock
- 3:48Speaker 1: drafts are all over the place, but I feel like
- 3:50Speaker 1: Penning could could definitely be a guy that that's kind
- 3:52Speaker 1: of in their range along with with the the guy
- 3:55Speaker 1: from Austria. Bernard Raymond, who who I talked to with
- 3:58Speaker 1: the combine, asked him a little bit of, you know
- 4:00Speaker 1: about about his inspiration along the international journey, and you know,
- 4:04Speaker 1: he specifically called out Jacob Johnson and Sebastian Volmer. It's
- 4:07Speaker 1: hard not to, you know, see shades of Volmer, see
- 4:10Speaker 1: shades a little bit of Nate Solder with his you know,
- 4:12Speaker 1: start as a tight end. So he's got some athletic
- 4:14Speaker 1: feat but um, you know again, everybody's gotten some concerns
- 4:18Speaker 1: and I think he's one who's late to the game.
- 4:19Speaker 1: He's learning it a little bit. So I think Penning Raymond,
- 4:22Speaker 1: those guys seem to potentially make sense in that twenty
- 4:24Speaker 1: one area if they were to fall. Both could be
- 4:27Speaker 1: a third tackled as a rookie backup, get their feet
- 4:31Speaker 1: wet a little bit and learn the pro game. So
- 4:34Speaker 1: like both those guys, I think they're they're sort of
- 4:35Speaker 1: a made soldier profile. You know. The idea was to
- 4:37Speaker 1: bring him in Havenim be the third guy, uh and
- 4:40Speaker 1: then you know rustled in. But yeah, you get an
- 4:43Speaker 1: injury and you get thrust into it like Solder did.
- 4:45Speaker 1: But um, which one of those two did? You like
- 4:48Speaker 1: tease out of Penning Penning in Raymond, I like Penning more.
- 4:52Speaker 1: I think just with the small skoy is a little
- 4:53Speaker 1: bit of a a chip on his shoulder. As Mike said
- 4:55Speaker 1: at the Senior Bowl, he was getting into it after
- 4:58Speaker 1: the whistle. Didn't want people to know that he's from
- 4:59Speaker 1: a all school. It's not gonna hold him back. Yeah,
- 5:01Speaker 1: and I did. Like you know, Mike referenced the tight
- 5:04Speaker 1: end background for Raymond, it wasn't just like that he
- 5:06Speaker 1: was a high school you know, these guys are all
- 5:08Speaker 1: high school somethings. Yet twenty catches at Central Michigan as
- 5:12Speaker 1: a tight end in his first couple of seasons, So
- 5:15Speaker 1: a little bit more athleticism there, I would say, than
- 5:18Speaker 1: what you're going to typically get at that poses. I
- 5:20Speaker 1: mean not to you know, jump down the list a
- 5:22Speaker 1: little bit. But you know, the other guy who played
- 5:23Speaker 1: on the other side, Lucadecki, is another former tight end
- 5:26Speaker 1: that they moved there at Central Michigan UM and and
- 5:29Speaker 1: maybe a little bit of a later round process prospect,
- 5:32Speaker 1: but a guy that that I also liked and you know,
- 5:34Speaker 1: stuck out to me. You kind of get stuck watching Raymond.
- 5:37Speaker 1: But but I think he got highlighted with with some
- 5:39Speaker 1: of his good plays over at the right tackle spot.
- 5:41Speaker 1: I think ideally you'd love to get a guy who
- 5:42Speaker 1: has those athletic features to play potentially left tackle, that would,
- 5:46Speaker 1: you know, give you some long term excitement about developing somebody.
- 5:49Speaker 1: But but he was another guy just to kind of
- 5:51Speaker 1: tie it in real quick with the central Michigan connection. Yeah,
- 5:54Speaker 1: and I do think tackle would be a position at
- 5:57Speaker 1: twenty one that I would would make some sense, and
- 6:00Speaker 1: you know, moving further down if they don't, if they're
- 6:04Speaker 1: not able to get it in the first round, because
- 6:05Speaker 1: I really think they could take anything. We've talked about
- 6:07Speaker 1: this at all of the different podcasts we've already done.
- 6:09Speaker 1: They could take almost anything at twenty one. I'd rather
- 6:12Speaker 1: see a tackle though, than an interior guy if they're
- 6:16Speaker 1: going to go really at the top of the draft.
- 6:19Speaker 1: And some people disagree with that because we're gonna start
- 6:21Speaker 1: talking about some guards now too. And Zion Johnson, the
- 6:24Speaker 1: kid from Boston College right here in our backyard. You know,
- 6:27Speaker 1: there's a guy that a lot of people are very
- 6:28Speaker 1: high on. He looks the part I mean, he could play.
- 6:32Speaker 1: I'm not telling you this guy's not going to be
- 6:33Speaker 1: able to play. I just I don't know if if
- 6:36Speaker 1: taking a guard. You know, like a lot of people said, well,
- 6:39Speaker 1: Logan Mankins was a guard. Well, there's two things involved
- 6:42Speaker 1: in that pick that to me are a little bit different.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Number One, he was a tackle in college, and I
- 6:47Speaker 1: don't think Bill Belichick knew when he drafted him he
- 6:50Speaker 1: was automatically going to be a guard. That happened great,
- 6:52Speaker 1: worked out one of the best offensive linemen in the
- 6:55Speaker 1: history of the franchise. But the second part of that
- 6:58Speaker 1: is taken with the thirty second overall pick. So twenty
- 7:02Speaker 1: I mean, that doesn't seem like that much, but twenty
- 7:04Speaker 1: one and thirty two, to me, that that's a significant difference.
- 7:07Speaker 1: I just I feel like you can get guards. I
- 7:09Speaker 1: feel like tackles are tougher to find, So if you're
- 7:11Speaker 1: gonna go offensive line, I'd rather it be tackle. I
- 7:13Speaker 1: don't know how you guys feeling that. I'm with you
- 7:16Speaker 1: on that one, and I throw it in two. You know,
- 7:17Speaker 1: that was a Patriots team thirty two, coming off a
- 7:20Speaker 1: Super Bowl championship. Maybe not quite the vast number of
- 7:23Speaker 1: needs that this team kind of needs right now, but
- 7:26Speaker 1: you know, to to Kenyan Green is another one I'd
- 7:29Speaker 1: throw in the mix, and you know, I think he
- 7:30Speaker 1: almost plays a little bit more of a chip on
- 7:32Speaker 1: his shoulder. He's played all over the line, which is
- 7:34Speaker 1: something that I always kind of have my radar out
- 7:36Speaker 1: for with these guys on the inside, and you know,
- 7:39Speaker 1: having that ability and design has the ability too, I
- 7:41Speaker 1: think to fill in outside in a pinch. But but
- 7:44Speaker 1: I think those two were kind of the top two guards,
- 7:46Speaker 1: and I think that by the time they get to
- 7:48Speaker 1: twenty one, they're probably going to be around. So it's
- 7:50Speaker 1: it's definitely something to talk about. I like Charles Cross
- 7:53Speaker 1: and I think he plays tackle, but he can also
- 7:55Speaker 1: play a bit of guard. I think, as we say,
- 7:57Speaker 1: versatility is key and if you can really move along
- 7:59Speaker 1: the line helps. I would put the kid from Kentucky
- 8:02Speaker 1: there too, Dari and Knard. I think it is um
- 8:05Speaker 1: He played all tackle at Kentucky and kind of a
- 8:08Speaker 1: different kind of offense too, that Liam Cohen offense. You
- 8:11Speaker 1: know who's starting to get a lot of buzz now
- 8:13Speaker 1: the former UMass quarterback who is now did he get
- 8:17Speaker 1: the offensive coordinator job where I'm not sure I forget well, anyway,
- 8:22Speaker 1: he was UMass quarterbacks was, yeah, we'll get it in.
- 8:26Speaker 1: He went to he coached all throughout New England and
- 8:30Speaker 1: then he got the offensive coordinator job at Kentucky, so
- 8:34Speaker 1: a different kind of offense that he ran. I think
- 8:37Speaker 1: Canard is better suited for guard based on what I read.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Not going to try to pretend that I made the
- 8:43Speaker 1: evaluation because I don't do that. I don't pretend I
- 8:46Speaker 1: make these evaluations. I rely on others to do show
- 8:49Speaker 1: for me, and he did. He did look like he
- 8:51Speaker 1: had those kinds of skill sets. Maybe works a little
- 8:55Speaker 1: bit better in tighter quarters. Um, you know, in terms
- 8:59Speaker 1: of the other interior guys. You know a little bit
- 9:02Speaker 1: further down, another small school guy out of Chattanooga, Cole Strange,
- 9:05Speaker 1: love that name. Cole stopular one. Um, you know out
- 9:08Speaker 1: of Chattanooga. He's another one that you guys talked about.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Went to the Senior Bowl, um, you know, which is
- 9:13Speaker 1: good for those you know, the lower level Division one guys,
- 9:16Speaker 1: the FCS guys. It gives him a chance to compete
- 9:19Speaker 1: against the best and he can sort of evaluate a
- 9:23Speaker 1: little bit. So he's a maybe a Day three guy
- 9:26Speaker 1: or you know, maybe a late Day two guy at best. Um.
- 9:29Speaker 1: You know, so if you're looking a little bit further
- 9:31Speaker 1: down the line, those are some of the guys that
- 9:32Speaker 1: you're looking at. Jamari Sailor from Uh he's a favorite
- 9:36Speaker 1: of himself. He uh yeah, remind me a little bit
- 9:40Speaker 1: of on when you you know thickness like just one
- 9:43Speaker 1: you just seemed so wide to us. I remember when
- 9:45Speaker 1: him rock walking out the training camp as a rookie
- 9:47Speaker 1: and just like big Mike there he is. You can
- 9:49Speaker 1: just see this massive square kind of water rectangle walking
- 9:53Speaker 1: onto the field. UM. I felt that way with him.
- 9:55Speaker 1: He just felt like a big brute um that that
- 9:57Speaker 1: you know, maybe could be complimentary to that style. Cold
- 10:00Speaker 1: Cole Strange, I definitely put a check mark next to him.
- 10:02Speaker 1: He's been a popular one. Just thought he was a
- 10:04Speaker 1: good athlete and uh and one other was Dylan Parham.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Um I wrote Ted Carris down a little bit of
- 10:09Speaker 1: reminder there another versatile guy for your starter. UM a
- 10:13Speaker 1: lot of experience. But you know, I think these interior
- 10:15Speaker 1: guys you mentioned Strange, Sallier, even Tyrese Robinson from Oklahoma
- 10:20Speaker 1: and guy I talked too with the Combine about Romandre Um.
- 10:24Speaker 1: There's just these mid round kind of guys that you
- 10:26Speaker 1: think may might even be able to come in and start.
- 10:27Speaker 1: I mean, look over the mind you did so put
- 10:30Speaker 1: some center too at the Senior Bowl. So again to
- 10:33Speaker 1: Matisa's point about the versatility, if you can move around
- 10:36Speaker 1: those interior guys, it really helps you. If you could
- 10:39Speaker 1: play all three of those spots. Yep, for sure, but
- 10:42Speaker 1: lots of options and you know, as I just find,
- 10:45Speaker 1: these are the hardest positions to to really get a
- 10:48Speaker 1: beat on. You certainly like guys who are versatile, guys
- 10:50Speaker 1: who have been captains, you know, guys who can move
- 10:53Speaker 1: pretty well. I think that's something they look at with,
- 10:54Speaker 1: you know, like a model of Shack Mason, not the
- 10:56Speaker 1: biggest guy, but can really run so any of those
- 10:59Speaker 1: things that they can do. But you know who was
- 11:01Speaker 1: on will Sherman last year, or it's you get down
- 11:04Speaker 1: in these day three guys don't need to be it's
- 11:06Speaker 1: kind of it's trying to find, you know, that that
- 11:08Speaker 1: random guy that that they like. But but I think
- 11:10Speaker 1: there's a lot of options and you know, hopefully they
- 11:13Speaker 1: can come out, I really do. I think they've got
- 11:14Speaker 1: some depth, but I think they need to solidify things,
- 11:16Speaker 1: especially for the long term at tackle. I think you
- 11:18Speaker 1: could get two offensive lineman in this draft class. It's
- 11:23Speaker 1: always a spot that that Belichick likes to tap at
- 11:26Speaker 1: the draft anyway, but they have a need and just
- 11:30Speaker 1: it would be remiss if you didn't mention Tyler Linderbaum
- 11:32Speaker 1: only because here's the top rated center in the class
- 11:35Speaker 1: and he went to Iowa. So it's all those Belichick
- 11:37Speaker 1: kind of things like what could be better? But it
- 11:40Speaker 1: looks like he may be a little bit higher than
- 11:44Speaker 1: the way they would draft him. But he's like one
- 11:46Speaker 1: of those step right in. He's your guy for for
- 11:49Speaker 1: the foreseeable future. Yeah, so, uh, I'm not going to
- 11:51Speaker 1: spend too much time on the centers, but we all agree, Uh,
- 11:54Speaker 1: you know, the offensive line is a need. There are
- 11:56Speaker 1: some tackles here. I know the Patriots have looked at
- 11:58Speaker 1: some of them, They've had some of them come in.
- 12:00Speaker 1: So we'll have to try to figure out if that's
- 12:03Speaker 1: smokescreen or how much reality there is to it. And
- 12:07Speaker 1: sometimes it just kind of comes down to how the
- 12:09Speaker 1: board unfolds and who they like the most. But this
- 12:12Speaker 1: is a position of need, even though I don't care
- 12:15Speaker 1: to talk about it anymore, that I happen. So I'll
- 12:18Speaker 1: leave that with you. Guys. And now that's going to
- 12:20Speaker 1: wrap up offense, but we have a long way to
- 12:23Speaker 1: go because there's some positions on defense too. We'll get
- 12:25Speaker 1: to those next. Thank you for downloading this podcast, Subscribe
