Transcript
- 0:00Hello, welcome to Chatting with Cara.
- 0:02I'm Cara, your compassionate life coach, relationship with
- 0:05food specialist, and I'm here to help you understand yourself a
- 0:09little bit better each week. However you found your way here
- 0:13today, I'm glad you're listening.
- 0:14Maybe your friend sent you this episode, maybe you've been with
- 0:17me from the start, or maybe you're just curious about doing
- 0:20things differently when it comes to food, your body, and how you
- 0:24feel about yourself. Whatever bought you here, you're
- 0:27in the right place. Here's what I do on the show.
- 0:29I've honest, kind conversations about the stuff that's actually
- 0:33holding you back. Not the surface level stuff, the
- 0:36deep stuff, the root causes. Because when you truly
- 0:40understand why you think and feel the way you do, then
- 0:44everything starts to change. It doesn't feel hard anymore, it
- 0:47just feels natural. So get comfortable, make
- 0:50yourself a group, and let's have a proper chat about the things
- 0:53that matter. This is chatting with karma.
- 0:59Stop searching for the next diet.
- 1:02Oh yes, this one's a good one. I'm probably going to say
- 1:07something that you never even thought of.
- 1:10I just really want to bring awareness to it because it's
- 1:13something that I see quite a lot and I have fallen into the trap
- 1:19of myself. This is looking externally for
- 1:27fixes, for information, for what's it called Like the next
- 1:35thing was actually, you don't need more information.
- 1:39You don't need the next thing. You just need to look inside
- 1:43yourself. Yes, because you have free will
- 1:53now. I saw this trending on social
- 1:56media a few weeks back. I was like, I need to talk about
- 1:59this because I think it's something that we all forget we
- 2:02have. I did a maternity course on how
- 2:08to give birth by Steph, the birth nerd.
- 2:11She was fantastic. And one of the things she talks
- 2:15about early doors is language around like maternity and giving
- 2:19birth. And that's what I do around.
- 2:23Bless you with food. I talk about language quite
- 2:25earlier. And she's like, nobody's making
- 2:28you stay in hospital. No one's making you do this.
- 2:32No one can do that. But the language they use is
- 2:35quite persuasive. So it makes you feel like you
- 2:38don't have free choice. And she's like, you do, you do
- 2:42have free choice. And it's like, Oh, yes, the
- 2:46police can stop you from leaving a place if you're arrested, but
- 2:51people can't stop people from living in a place if it's like
- 2:54the hospital. And it's like, oh, no, you have
- 2:57free will. And I'm like, yes, we do.
- 2:59And you have free will to eat ice cream for breakfast because
- 3:04you're an intelligent woman. No one's going to tell you off.
- 3:09That is free will. And I think it's really
- 3:12important to remember that you have that.
- 3:16But it's not like I'm you're going to get like, oh, Carl says
- 3:19I've got free will. Can you go on?
- 3:20Like, no, it doesn't work that loud, does it?
- 3:23Let me reframe this for you. So if you are someone who's
- 3:31dieted on and off your whole life or just on your whole life,
- 3:35been on a diet forever, it feels like you're always outsourcing
- 3:40your decision making, your authority, your information
- 3:45about what you eat to external sources, to other people, to
- 3:48what they think, to their food rules.
- 3:51So that could be like dieting apps, trucking apps, what are
- 3:55you eating a day, videos on social media, supplement ads,
- 4:01what you mate Jenny has for lunch or what they have in the
- 4:08office or what happens on fat Fridays.
- 4:12Always looking at outsourcing your decision making and it's
- 4:19not an information probably you've actually probably got too
- 4:22much information you've got lots of information around you you've
- 4:25got oh, don't do this do that. You shouldn't be eating that.
- 4:30You should be eating this that's bad for you that's good for you
- 4:33Oh no, that's not good for you if you have that, you don't want
- 4:36me. If you're a chronic constant
- 4:39Dieter like you, you know what I'm talking about.
- 4:43All these external things, but you don't need any more
- 4:48information. More information is not the
- 4:51answer. So when you say I know what to
- 4:54do, I just don't do it. The answer is actually within
- 4:58you. It's actually within you, and
- 5:01it's not a willpower thing. It's not like, oh, I need more
- 5:04willpower. That's diet culture telling you
- 5:08that you need more willpower to stop eating this.
- 5:11But free will in this context is having the ability to pause and
- 5:16then choose rather than react automatically.
- 5:21So instead of it being, oh, I'll start again on Monday, there's
- 5:25actually like a moment where you hand yourself the power.
- 5:28You have a pause. You're like, oh, actually, what
- 5:30does a really smart woman like me, who's pretty great at life,
- 5:35to be fair, I've got everything else nailed down.
- 5:37What decision is she going to make?
- 5:39Have agency over your right over choice.
- 5:42Make a decision and then act on it.
- 5:48I know it's not thinking I'll start on Monday and I'll follow
- 5:53that diet, or I'll start on Monday and I won't have that.
- 5:56I'll start on Monday and I won't buy that this week because
- 5:58they're too tempting. Or I'll just have this take away
- 6:02on Saturday and then I'll start on Monday and then I won't have
- 6:05any takeaways till my holiday. It's like having the authority
- 6:10to make a decision, to lead yourself, to permit yourself,
- 6:15and that is when you need to exercise his free will.
- 6:19You have to pause and then you have to choose rather than just
- 6:23reacting automatically. Be like, no, stop and think.
- 6:31Now, if you're a perfectionist, if you have some perfectionism
- 6:36tendencies, which you might do, you might do.
- 6:40So you are very much an all or nothing thinker that narrows
- 6:46down your options. So it's only like there's only
- 6:49one way of your day going and that's perfect.
- 6:52If it goes derails a little bit from perfect, like you have that
- 6:56one biscuit and you think, oh, sod it.
- 6:58Now it's about reframing that one biscuit.
- 7:03It's about going, oh, actually, this is my perfectionist
- 7:06tendencies coming up. And you know what?
- 7:09I have free will. I can carry on pressing the self
- 7:11sabotage button and I can ruin the whole day.
- 7:14I can ruin tomorrow. I can ruin it till next Monday,
- 7:17or I can exercise my free will. Stop pausing it.
- 7:20Actually, I really like that biscuit with that coffee and
- 7:23needed that. And now I'm just going to go and
- 7:25eat what I was normally going to eat for lunch and I'm going to
- 7:28have my normal tea. You have free will to make
- 7:32authority over your decisions. I know the choice is always
- 7:39available, always available. Another reason why these
- 7:44podcasts come up. I'm scattering around here a
- 7:46bit, but I've just come to my mind.
- 7:47Another reason why these podcasts came up was because I
- 7:50was in a meeting and someone was saying how long it takes to
- 7:56change a habit. And they were like, oh, it's 30
- 7:59days. You need 30 days to change a
- 8:01habit. And me and my friend looked at
- 8:05each of them were like, you can change a habit today.
- 8:09You don't need to wait 30 days. You can change a habit today
- 8:13because you have free will over your actions.
- 8:16We live in a free country. We don't really live in a free
- 8:19world, but we live in a free country.
- 8:21And if you want to stop doom scrolling, you can do you don't
- 8:25have to wait 30 days. You can just stop it.
- 8:29I know if you want to stop emotionally eating, you can stop
- 8:34emotionally eating, but you have to have the tools and strategies
- 8:37in there to like change it. But you don't have to wait 30
- 8:42days. You don't have to say, oh,
- 8:44actually someone said that it's 30 days.
- 8:47You don't even know who you can change it.
- 8:51You can change whatever you want to change.
- 8:53It's not about willpower, It's not about determination.
- 8:56It's about having free will and making decision which aligns
- 9:00with what you want. I know going back to
- 9:07relationship with food, that was just a separate thing that I
- 9:09came upon. I was like, I know This is why I
- 9:11need to talk about it. What I see with chronic dieters,
- 9:16like when I say chronic, I'm sorry, that sounds really harsh.
- 9:20But when I, when I see people who've been on a diet all their
- 9:22lives or been on and off, it's, it's really super, super common.
- 9:27They get really stuck in making their own decisions and feeling
- 9:33confident in them. So instead of listening to
- 9:37themselves, they just completely ignore everything about their
- 9:41own body, what she's telling her and everything like that.
- 9:43So they eat by the clock, they eat by the plan, eat by the
- 9:47calories consumed, eat by the protein level.
- 9:50And it's never looked internally at what the body wants when the
- 9:56body's hungry, what the body is saying, how it's communicating,
- 10:02what are the emotions saying when you have that urge to eat?
- 10:07What is the feelings behind the drive to open the fridge door?
- 10:13It's never about that with diets and food rules.
- 10:16However, in mindful eating, that's what I look at because
- 10:20you don't need any more information.
- 10:23You just need to like access your body.
- 10:25You need to look internally instead of externally.
- 10:29You need to reconnect the internal hunger and foreigner
- 10:31scale. You need to claim it back as an
- 10:36act of free will. You need to listen to what your
- 10:39body is communicating because you've taught, you've been
- 10:43taught to ignore it. And when you get the tools and
- 10:47strategies in place to listen again, you, you physically can't
- 10:50go wrong. You can't be on a wagon.
- 10:53You can't fall off the wagon because you're listening to your
- 10:57own body. There's no right or wrong.
- 11:00And that's what I do in mindful eating.
- 11:02I take you back to you so that you then gain confidence in what
- 11:06your body is doing, what your mind is doing.
- 11:09You make decisions. They go, oh, yeah, actually, you
- 11:11know what? I did just have that biscuit
- 11:13without coffee. I didn't think about having a
- 11:17dessert for tea, didn't think about ordering a take away.
- 11:22So just I just moved on with my life.
- 11:25And that's the beauty of mindful eating.
- 11:30That is the beauty of taking the information back into yourself.
- 11:35A lot of diets and food rules and everything like that, they
- 11:40disempower you. They make you think that, oh,
- 11:45you can't be hungry, you must be thirsty.
- 11:47You don't need to eat that much because that's too much for you.
- 11:51There's nothing about like what you want.
- 11:54And what I do in coaching, my 1:00 to 1:00 coaching, I give
- 11:57you the power back. I empower you.
- 12:01It's one of my core values, empowerment, because I'm not
- 12:05here to disempower you. I'm here to say, you know what?
- 12:08You're a smart, capable woman. Let's just apply that to food.
- 12:14Let's just listen to your body. Let's listen to what's going on
- 12:18inside you. Let's create some awareness
- 12:21around these things that are coming up for you that then
- 12:24drive you to eat. And it's really important to be
- 12:29empowered because once you feel empowered, you change.
- 12:32It's lasting change. It's not like you go, oh, I was
- 12:36empowered then, but I'm not empowered now.
- 12:39It doesn't work like that. You just get more and more
- 12:41confident in your decisions until you get to the same point
- 12:44as the confidence that you are when you're making a decision at
- 12:49home or at work. It's just a decision you make
- 12:52and it's no longer thinking, should I be eating this?
- 12:55Should I? Is this good for me?
- 12:58None of that, none of that. It's all about making a decision
- 13:02that like comes from you and your body.
- 13:05Therefore you can't go wrong. Oh, no, but I hear you say, but
- 13:13colour, I've done everything and my body would eat everything.
- 13:18So I can't listen to her. I can't do that or I should be
- 13:23able to do this on my own. I know enough.
- 13:25Yep, I've got all the diets I've done a bit.
- 13:27I like that bit from that one, that bit I should be able to do
- 13:29it. And yeah, it's oh, how how do I
- 13:40going to put this? It's not something that you can
- 13:46do by yourself because looking internally is a skill that needs
- 13:51to be built on. It's not a character trait.
- 13:54You either have it or you don't have it.
- 13:56It's a skill, it's that can be learned.
- 13:59It's not something that you're born with.
- 14:02Everybody has the ability to look internally to create
- 14:06awareness about things. But it is a skill that needs to
- 14:11be gained, and that's where coaching helps.
- 14:13That's where coaching helps because it you don't have to do
- 14:16it by yourself. It's often the blind side.
- 14:20But I see it. It's like when someone looks in,
- 14:23I can look in at people on consultation calls and I'm like,
- 14:26Yep, I've seen this before. I know exactly what I'm talking
- 14:28about. Yep, all this I know.
- 14:31And they're like, really like, yeah, you're not unusual.
- 14:35You're very much a very much a product of your environment.
- 14:41And they're like, oh, I thought it was just me.
- 14:44It's like, no, no, you don't have to do this on your own.
- 14:49Let's just bring awareness to it because you're a smart, capable
- 14:52woman. Let's do that.
- 14:57So yeah, you don't have to do it on your own, but giving people,
- 15:02giving women free will, giving them the ability to look
- 15:05internally at all the information that they already
- 15:07have and listen to their body is absolutely fantastic.
- 15:11When it comes to relationship with food, it's really good
- 15:15because then it becomes ethical, it becomes sustainable.
- 15:18It becomes beautiful when I watch people flourish, make
- 15:22decisions, feel empowered, and then they're like, yeah, don't
- 15:26do that anymore. I'm like, Oh, yeah, you don't do
- 15:28you? And then that just makes room
- 15:31for everything else in their life to get better, which is
- 15:34fantastic, which is what we love, which is what sorting out
- 15:38your relationship with food is like.
- 15:41If I have said anything that you're like, oh, Carver, I'm
- 15:44like that. Then head over to the show
- 15:47notes, book a free consultation, call with me for 30 minutes.
- 15:51I'll chat to you. And I'll be like, yeah, we can
- 15:53sort that out. Yep, I know what to do.
- 15:55Don't worry about that and let, yeah, let's just chat in there
- 16:01because I was in this position with my business.
- 16:08So bit of bit of a open up here. Built a really successful
- 16:13business and then had a baby. I know the curse of women's
- 16:17careers. Then all of a sudden I just
- 16:19started dating myself, dating my business, and I was looking for
- 16:22other people to tell me what to do.
- 16:24I was looking at people telling me, oh, you need to do that, you
- 16:27need to do that and you need to plug this hole.
- 16:29You need to do this task. And as as a task based person, I
- 16:32love that. Bye.
- 16:34But actually my business is all about me and what works for me
- 16:40and how I do it. And I was like, hey, you know
- 16:42what? I just need to listen to myself.
- 16:44I need to listen to my gut. I need to listen to my head.
- 16:47I need to listen to my heart. And since I've gone back to
- 16:50doing that and I've blocked it, all the external noise, it feels
- 16:54so much easier. It feels so much more peaceful.
- 16:58It feels, yeah, it feels great. It feels great.
- 17:04And my business is flourishing. So Yep, let's stop looking for
- 17:10the next diet. Let's access what's already
- 17:14inside you. And yeah, let's break the cycle
- 17:18you're in because that's exactly what I do in coaching.
- 17:22Head over to the show now. It's book your call, and let's
