- 0:00Speaker 1: You get to decide how your life goes. Other people
- 0:03Speaker 1: don't determine your lives. Not your parents, not your lovers,
- 0:05Speaker 1: not your friends. Those are assets on top of.
- 0:09Speaker 2: What you have.
- 0:10Speaker 1: But what you actually have every single day is you
- 0:15Speaker 1: and what you choose to do and be for you.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Hey Hurdlers, Emily ABOUDI here bringing you day two of
- 0:38Speaker 3: five of the in Focused Series from Hurdle, a wellness
- 0:43Speaker 3: focused podcast where I sit down with inspiring individuals to
- 0:47Speaker 3: talk about everything from their big wins to how they've
- 0:49Speaker 3: gotten through some of life's toughest moments. On the show,
- 0:53Speaker 3: you can expect vulnerability, motivation, and candid discussions with everyone
- 0:57Speaker 3: from top athletes to aspiring on yours on what it
- 1:00Speaker 3: really takes to follow your passions.
- 1:03Speaker 4: My mission is.
- 1:04Speaker 3: Simple to inspire you to be your best self, move
- 1:08Speaker 3: with intention, and have some fun along the way.
- 1:12Speaker 4: As I mentioned yesterday.
- 1:13Speaker 3: The in Focused series is really dedicated.
- 1:16Speaker 4: To helping us home in on some of the.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Biggest wellness related goals that many have going into the
- 1:25Speaker 3: new year. I know that coming off of twenty twenty,
- 1:29Speaker 3: which was pretty difficult, a lot of us have struggled
- 1:33Speaker 3: at times with finding the positives with seeing the bright side.
- 1:37Speaker 4: And so today's episode.
- 1:39Speaker 3: Is all about how to have a more positive mindset,
- 1:43Speaker 3: how to be more optimistic in our day Today, it
- 1:48Speaker 3: was a no brainer for me. I knew exactly who
- 1:51Speaker 3: I wanted to chat with about this, none other than
- 1:55Speaker 3: Michelle Hines.
- 1:56Speaker 4: Nachelle is an.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Actor and activist, the Sea chief ride officer at Cycle
- 2:03Speaker 3: House out in LA and you have heard from her
- 2:05Speaker 3: before on the show as well. Make sure to link
- 2:08Speaker 3: to that episode in the show notes. Michelle is a
- 2:12Speaker 3: hype woman. I left our first conversation feeling literally like
- 2:16Speaker 3: I could do absolutely anything I set my mind to.
- 2:20Speaker 4: So for today's episode, we're bringing that vibe back.
- 2:23Speaker 3: We're talking about the power of positivity, how to have
- 2:26Speaker 3: more positive thoughts in your day to day and bring
- 2:29Speaker 3: that good nature into so many of the things that
- 2:32Speaker 3: you're doing on the regular. I get it, keeping a
- 2:35Speaker 3: positive outlook might not be something that comes absolutely naturally,
- 2:40Speaker 3: But what I know is that optimism can be just
- 2:43Speaker 3: like a muscle.
- 2:44Speaker 4: You've got to train it. Trust me.
- 2:46Speaker 3: If you need something to kick off your twenty twenty
- 2:50Speaker 3: one on the right foot, this is it. Before I
- 2:53Speaker 3: get into today's episode, I do want to take a
- 2:56Speaker 3: moment to thank my friends at whoop for making this
- 2:59Speaker 3: week of content possible. As we think about the ways
- 3:03Speaker 3: we can make improvements to ourselves and achieve or resolutions
- 3:06Speaker 3: we've set for the year, being able to monitor your
- 3:08Speaker 3: progress short and long term is so important.
- 3:12Speaker 4: I said this yesterday, I'm going to bring it back
- 3:14Speaker 4: into the fold.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Heere eighty percent of resolutions fail, and that's primarily a
- 3:19Speaker 3: result of individuals not tracking their progress and staying accountable.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Having a fitness tracker like WOOP can make it so
- 3:27Speaker 3: much easier to stay on point. Whoop is literally like
- 3:32Speaker 3: having a personal trainer on your wrist for less than
- 3:36Speaker 3: a dollar. Each day, it tells you how recovered your
- 3:39Speaker 3: body is, how much strain it can take on in
- 3:42Speaker 3: a day, and how well you slept. And with the
- 3:46Speaker 3: built in coaching features, WOOP sets target exertion goals, so
- 3:49Speaker 3: you know how long you should aim to work out
- 3:51Speaker 3: for and it also lets you know how much sleep
- 3:54Speaker 3: your body needs to be recovered the next day. You
- 3:57Speaker 3: can easily track your weekly progress to see how active
- 4:00Speaker 3: you've been throughout the week, how many calories you've been burning,
- 4:02Speaker 3: how recovered you've been, and how well you've slept compared.
- 4:05Speaker 4: To how much sleep you need it. I'm telling you
- 4:08Speaker 4: it's got a lot of goodness in here. So whether
- 4:10Speaker 4: you want to see.
- 4:11Speaker 3: If you've been active enough or if you're improving your health,
- 4:14Speaker 3: Whoop helps provide that insight weekly and monthly with personalized
- 4:19Speaker 3: recording for.

- 5:12Speaker 3: review the show over in the iTunes store.
- 5:15Speaker 4: It helps the show get.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Up the charts, and it's just nice to know that
- 5:19Speaker 3: you guys are digging what you're getting into here. If
- 5:22Speaker 3: you're still thinking about those big goals for twenty twenty one,
- 5:24Speaker 3: I've got a goal setting workshop this Wednesday, January sixth,
- 5:28Speaker 3: at seven pm Eastern. There are still a few more spots,
- 5:31Speaker 3: so snack one for yourself and use the code twenty twenty.
- 5:34Speaker 4: One at checkout to save five dollars today. Like to
- 5:39Speaker 4: do that is in the show notes. With that, let's
- 5:43Speaker 4: get to hurtling today, I am chatting with Nachelle Hines.
- 6:00Speaker 3: He's an actor, she's an activist, she's the cro at
- 6:03Speaker 3: cycle House and Michelle.
- 6:04Speaker 4: How are you?
- 6:06Speaker 2: I am good.
- 6:07Speaker 1: It's just been a crazy year, but I'm I mean,
- 6:10Speaker 1: all things considered, it's really good.
- 6:12Speaker 4: All things considered, it's really good.
- 6:14Speaker 3: I know.
- 6:14Speaker 4: It's like finding the small pieces of gratitude.
- 6:17Speaker 2: In our in our day to day here, Oh, small
- 6:20Speaker 2: and large.
- 6:21Speaker 1: I'm constantly shocked by if you're looking for them, the
- 6:24Speaker 1: availability of miracles.
- 6:25Speaker 2: They're everywhere, They're they're there.
- 6:27Speaker 1: You know, if you just if say to yourself and
- 6:30Speaker 1: you open up your day with like hope for a
- 6:32Speaker 1: miracle and listen miracles big or small, like literally, if
- 6:36Speaker 1: like someone takes out my garbage, like if the handyman
- 6:38Speaker 1: sees me and takes the garbage, like that is in
- 6:41Speaker 1: and of itself, because it's something that I didn't want
- 6:43Speaker 1: to do, it's a miracle. I think that we have
- 6:47Speaker 1: to see and acknowledge even what might be considered just oh,
- 6:51Speaker 1: this kind of nice thing that happened. If it was
- 6:53Speaker 1: unexpected and it happened and it changed your day for
- 6:55Speaker 1: the better, why can't you see that as a mini
- 6:58Speaker 1: miracle in your life?
- 6:59Speaker 4: Why not?
- 7:00Speaker 1: Truthfully, what you believe and what you perceive is what
- 7:03Speaker 1: is happening. I think I've learned that more than any
- 7:06Speaker 1: other time in this twenty twenty Well.
- 7:09Speaker 3: You're teeing us off to get into the right vibe,
- 7:11Speaker 3: the right state of mind for what you and I
- 7:13Speaker 3: are specifically talking about. And I think that a lot
- 7:17Speaker 3: of individuals after twenty twenty now in twenty twenty one,
- 7:23Speaker 3: have a renewed sense of hope to focus on the
- 7:26Speaker 3: positive and can admittedly say that maybe in the previous
- 7:30Speaker 3: year they were having trouble finding that silver lining. So
- 7:34Speaker 3: I called you in today, because after having you on
- 7:38Speaker 3: the show last year, I got so much positive feedback
- 7:42Speaker 3: just about the motivation and the energy that you brought
- 7:46Speaker 3: to the feed and I knew that there was no
- 7:48Speaker 3: one better to talk to me about how to stay
- 7:51Speaker 3: positive and adopt a more positive mindset in the day
- 7:55Speaker 3: to day.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Listen, we life is full of challenge, and I think
- 8:00Speaker 1: that so many people wake up in the state of oh,
- 8:04Speaker 1: here comes another day. But every single day is an opportunity,
- 8:07Speaker 1: and if we don't see it as such, then that's
- 8:09Speaker 1: not what we're gonna get. That's what I'm talking about,
- 8:10Speaker 1: how there are miracles everywhere. There's an opportunity for you
- 8:14Speaker 1: to shine every single day. If you think you can,
- 8:17Speaker 1: you can't, right, So if you don't start your day
- 8:21Speaker 1: from that mindset, we all do different things. I have
- 8:24Speaker 1: a ritual of things that I do. I wake up
- 8:26Speaker 1: five things I'm grateful for. I think I probably said
- 8:29Speaker 1: it in our in our time before. But if I'm
- 8:31Speaker 1: thinking about all the things that are against me for
- 8:33Speaker 1: the day, what am I going to notice throughout the
- 8:35Speaker 1: day every single thing that's against me? If I think
- 8:40Speaker 1: about something that I'm grateful for, what am I going
- 8:42Speaker 1: to see more things for me to be grateful for.
- 8:45Speaker 2: And I think that we relinquish control of.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Ourselves and our day and our struggle constantly. And I
- 8:54Speaker 1: think that everyone talks about how hard it is to
- 8:57Speaker 1: be happy. Why can't we translate that into how how
- 9:00Speaker 1: hard it is to be sad? Why can't we start
- 9:02Speaker 1: our day in a positive state and expect that to
- 9:06Speaker 1: be reinforced? Why do we exist in a state, so
- 9:10Speaker 1: many of us, and in a world where we're constantly
- 9:12Speaker 1: looking for things to not go our way? And I
- 9:16Speaker 1: think that it starts with one right. You can control
- 9:19Speaker 1: one thing. You can control yourself and how you respond
- 9:21Speaker 1: to the things that happen to you. And I think
- 9:24Speaker 1: that if you're not doing that, then of course your
- 9:26Speaker 1: day is going wrong. Of course you're seeing negatives in
- 9:28Speaker 1: your life. But if you can start your day from
- 9:30Speaker 1: a space of I expect things to go my way
- 9:34Speaker 1: and that when things don't, I am equipped with every
- 9:38Speaker 1: inch of every bit of my brain power and who
- 9:41Speaker 1: I am and where I'm from and all of these
- 9:43Speaker 1: things that we have to shift that right. Terrible things
- 9:48Speaker 1: happen a lot, and I know in twenty twenty things
- 9:51Speaker 1: have happened.
- 9:51Speaker 2: For people that are not great. I lost a sister
- 9:54Speaker 2: in law to COVID.
- 9:55Speaker 1: My brother is a forty eight year old widower with
- 9:58Speaker 1: a fifteen year old, at thirteen year old and a
- 10:00Speaker 1: just turned twelve year old. And if there's anything that
- 10:04Speaker 1: he's taught me is this is what's happening, and this
- 10:08Speaker 1: is terrible.
- 10:09Speaker 2: But we can choose love.
- 10:11Speaker 1: We can choose to honor her presence in our life
- 10:16Speaker 1: by being better, by showing up and living life to
- 10:18Speaker 1: its fullest. So it's not to say that things don't happen,
- 10:21Speaker 1: but how do you handle the things that happen to
- 10:23Speaker 1: you that are negative?
- 10:25Speaker 2: And that is not to suggest that you're.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Not allowed to be sad or be bad or be
- 10:31Speaker 1: We all have those moments and that's all part of it.
- 10:34Speaker 1: But there are also the silver lining of I have
- 10:37Speaker 1: the love and support of my family. I have three
- 10:39Speaker 1: beautiful children. I could be sad about the state of
- 10:42Speaker 1: cycle house, which we don't even know what that's in.
- 10:43Speaker 1: It could be in a state of flux. It's in
- 10:45Speaker 1: a state of flux.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Well, what can I do?
- 10:47Speaker 1: I can create zooms that I can continue to connect
- 10:49Speaker 1: with my writers that have the ability to connect with me.
- 10:52Speaker 1: I have the option to cry about the fact that
- 10:55Speaker 1: cycle House can't be open and California is going to
- 10:57Speaker 1: be closed for the next nine months. Or I have
- 10:58Speaker 1: the opportunity to say, what can I do to change this?
- 11:02Speaker 1: What can I do to make our circumstances better? What
- 11:04Speaker 1: can I do to continue to give my clients who
- 11:07Speaker 1: I love, who have changed the course of my life
- 11:09Speaker 1: and given me an opportunity. Well, me who is technologically challenged. Right,
- 11:13Speaker 1: I was in acting school when everyone was learning how
- 11:16Speaker 1: to do all this stuff.
- 11:16Speaker 2: So what do I do.
- 11:17Speaker 1: I have a twenty six year old that helps me
- 11:20Speaker 1: and comes in my house and sets this up. I
- 11:22Speaker 1: upgraded my Internet. I figured it out. And I think
- 11:26Speaker 1: that we in this culture and in this time, have
- 11:29Speaker 1: a choice.
- 11:30Speaker 3: Right.
- 11:31Speaker 1: We can be problem keepers, as I like to call them,
- 11:33Speaker 1: like the keeper of the problem, and it gets inside
- 11:35Speaker 1: of us and it breaks us down and it stops
- 11:37Speaker 1: us from doing anything.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Or we can be problem solvers and say, here is
- 11:42Speaker 2: what's happening to me.
- 11:44Speaker 1: Literally, whether you have to write it down or you
- 11:46Speaker 1: have to talk about it or whatever it is, this
- 11:49Speaker 1: is what's happening to me, and here's what I can
- 11:52Speaker 1: do to make it more palatable. And once you're able
- 11:56Speaker 1: to make it palatable, right, it's enough. Once you've survived,
- 11:58Speaker 1: how can you then thrive? So so often we're living
- 12:02Speaker 1: in this state of fear of just trying to survive,
- 12:04Speaker 1: and then you say, no, how can I thrive in
- 12:07Speaker 1: my life? And how can we honor ourselves? And I
- 12:10Speaker 1: think that the greatest form of honor and respect to
- 12:12Speaker 1: yourself is making sure that your life is the best
- 12:15Speaker 1: that it can possibly be that is within your control.
- 12:19Speaker 3: And I think that a lot of people struggle with
- 12:22Speaker 3: this idea that one thing goes wrong or you know,
- 12:27Speaker 3: doesn't go as they had hoped during the day, and
- 12:30Speaker 3: they have maybe unintentionally adopted that all or nothing mentality.
- 12:36Speaker 3: It's like, well, the day's already thrown off, so I'm
- 12:39Speaker 3: going to throw my hands up and just the day's awash.
- 12:42Speaker 3: And that's how it is. So for the person that
- 12:44Speaker 3: can identify that way, the person that is like, actually,
- 12:47Speaker 3: that sounds a lot like how I usually act. What
- 12:49Speaker 3: do you say to them to kind of flip the
- 12:52Speaker 3: script and be more positive even when those hurdles arise.
- 12:56Speaker 1: I think that it's really important to have a personal mantra.
- 12:59Speaker 1: I think it's really important that you have something or
- 13:02Speaker 1: a statement that you can go to that will automatically
- 13:06Speaker 1: shift you. For example, I was like just having this
- 13:09Speaker 1: fear that like, oh, there's gonna be a spider in
- 13:11Speaker 1: my house, right, So every time that I said, okay,
- 13:15Speaker 1: this keeps coming up, this thought keeps coming up, I'm like,
- 13:17Speaker 1: maybe instead of that, every time I think of a spider,
- 13:21Speaker 1: I'm gonna think of the man of my dreams entering
- 13:23Speaker 1: my life. I'm not kidding now, every time I think
- 13:26Speaker 1: of spiders, like a good thought is triggered along with it,
- 13:30Speaker 1: and your mind is trainable. Your mind, you are in
- 13:34Speaker 1: control of your thoughts. So often we think that circumstances
- 13:38Speaker 1: and all these things are in control of us, and
- 13:40Speaker 1: it takes so much practice. And actually use the spider
- 13:44Speaker 1: thing as an exercise. Can I take this thing that
- 13:49Speaker 1: for me like I'm a baby, I'm afraid of spiders, needles,
- 13:52Speaker 1: and spiders, whatever. But can I take this thing that
- 13:56Speaker 1: I somehow associate with trauma and turn it into something else.
- 14:01Speaker 1: So it's not that I'm not acknowledging that that thought
- 14:03Speaker 1: is there. I'm acknowledging the thought, and I'm allowing the
- 14:06Speaker 1: negative thought to go through me right as opposed to
- 14:11Speaker 1: the thought comes and we love to hold it and
- 14:13Speaker 1: make love to it and hold on to this thing
- 14:16Speaker 1: where all I'm offering, all I'm suggesting is, can you say,
- 14:21Speaker 1: when something goes wrong, the universe is conspiring for my
- 14:25Speaker 1: greater good? Just a really general one car is a
- 14:28Speaker 1: flat The universe is conspiring for my greater good. I
- 14:32Speaker 1: didn't get the job that I wanted. The universe is
- 14:34Speaker 1: conspiring for my greater good. I didn't, you know, get
- 14:38Speaker 1: the you know, I didn't get.
- 14:40Speaker 2: The Christmas gift that I wanted. The universe is conspiring
- 14:42Speaker 2: for my greater good. And I will tell you.
- 14:44Speaker 1: I'll give you a really tangible, super personal example that's
- 14:48Speaker 1: even deeper than the Spider thing. When the George Floyd
- 14:52Speaker 1: thing was going on, I very much personally felt like
- 14:56Speaker 1: I was at a crossroads. And this is something that's
- 15:00Speaker 1: we're not embarrassing for me to admit, but something that
- 15:03Speaker 1: was real for me that I had to spend a
- 15:06Speaker 1: little bit of time thinking about.
- 15:08Speaker 2: I went to UC Berkeley.
- 15:09Speaker 1: The activist spirit is loud and proud and inside of
- 15:11Speaker 1: me when this happened. Obviously, the way that we were
- 15:16Speaker 1: all communicating was through Instagram, right I have, it's COVID.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Money is different, it's down I have.
- 15:24Speaker 1: I was lucky enough to have some brands that I
- 15:25Speaker 1: was involved with, and I thought, what are these brands
- 15:28Speaker 1: gonna think if I just go into my full black self,
- 15:34Speaker 1: you know, because it's connected to my money, and we
- 15:36Speaker 1: can be honest and upfront about that. I'm the accidental influencer,
- 15:40Speaker 1: which I think is why it's been, you know, somewhat
- 15:42Speaker 1: successful for me, because it was never a plan. I
- 15:45Speaker 1: don't plan content, I don't do those kinds of things.
- 15:48Speaker 1: And I really had to say, like, at this.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Time in my life, I need this money. I need
- 15:56Speaker 2: this money. This isn't extra psycho, this isn't here. I
- 16:00Speaker 2: have to take care of myself.
- 16:01Speaker 1: And also I'm trying to get back into my career
- 16:04Speaker 1: as an actor, which as we know, can have large
- 16:06Speaker 1: periods of dry spells. And I to have a conversation
- 16:09Speaker 1: with myself about who I am and who I'm willing
- 16:12Speaker 1: to be and what was going on in the world
- 16:14Speaker 1: I wasn't affecting sort of me in this big general scale.
- 16:19Speaker 1: I am a black woman, I'm an activist. I have
- 16:22Speaker 1: strong feelings about what's going on and it is wrong
- 16:25Speaker 1: and it is horrible and something needs to be said.
- 16:28Speaker 2: And I pride myself an authenticity.
- 16:30Speaker 1: So I had the conversation with myself where I had
- 16:32Speaker 1: to say part of my French, but fuck the endorsements.
- 16:36Speaker 1: This is so much bigger than me and so much
- 16:38Speaker 1: more important than me, and I will find a way
- 16:40Speaker 1: to survive. What's the most important is that I share
- 16:44Speaker 1: what is going on within my community and lines being
- 16:46Speaker 1: lost and how that feels, and educate people, regardless about
- 16:50Speaker 1: anybody might choose to feel about what I'm saying, and
- 16:53Speaker 1: risk that money, risk that opportunity that I have.
- 16:59Speaker 2: And I jumped.
- 17:01Speaker 1: I gave a speech in front of twenty thousand people.
- 17:03Speaker 1: I protested, I did talks, I did walks. You saw
- 17:06Speaker 1: the stuff. It's all still there. I said things I
- 17:09Speaker 1: lived out loud in my truth as a black woman,
- 17:11Speaker 1: of how I felt that was affecting my community, myself,
- 17:14Speaker 1: my family, and my life.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Well, look at that. Everything tripled and quadrupled.
- 17:22Speaker 1: More opportunities, more investments, feeling more seene, feeling more heard.
- 17:27Speaker 1: In the letters that I got from people who were
- 17:31Speaker 1: not what you would call racist, but were living in
- 17:34Speaker 1: privilege and didn't understand and to be able to help
- 17:37Speaker 1: open that door in my own small way in this
- 17:39Speaker 1: huge movement that took place in twenty twenty. Sometimes you
- 17:44Speaker 1: have to see things that might scare you, that you
- 17:48Speaker 1: think might hurt you, but that you know that it
- 17:52Speaker 1: is really important for you to be authentic and to
- 17:54Speaker 1: live out loud.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Sometimes you have to jump and you have to take
- 17:57Speaker 2: that plunge, come what may.
- 17:59Speaker 1: But I promised, if you are living your authentic self,
- 18:02Speaker 1: and you are living your truth, and you are fighting
- 18:04Speaker 1: for not only who you are, but who you want
- 18:06Speaker 1: to be, who you want your future children to be,
- 18:08Speaker 1: who you want your friends to be, all of those things,
- 18:11Speaker 1: I promise you the universe is conspiring for your greater
- 18:15Speaker 1: good and that thing that you might not have gotten
- 18:17Speaker 1: or whatever, then there's something better on the other side.
- 18:22Speaker 4: Thank you for sharing that with me and with the hurdlers.
- 18:26Speaker 3: I feel like watching you this year has been really refreshing,
- 18:32Speaker 3: and that when you may not know exactly what to
- 18:38Speaker 3: say or how to act, that doesn't mean that there
- 18:40Speaker 3: isn't something to say or an action that you can take.
- 18:44Speaker 3: And I think often we feel paralyzed because we're worried
- 18:49Speaker 3: about again that word what's quote unquote right when sometimes
- 18:55Speaker 3: something is certainly better than nothing. I think also something
- 19:00Speaker 3: you said toward the beginning of that was kind of
- 19:04Speaker 3: rambling off a list of things that could go wrong.
- 19:08Speaker 3: You mentioned not getting the Christmas present you wanted, maybe
- 19:11Speaker 3: a dear friend passing away, not getting the job that
- 19:14Speaker 3: you wanted, And for many, twenty twenty was a series
- 19:19Speaker 3: of those things happening right in a row, and it
- 19:22Speaker 3: just felt as though we were getting knocked down, and
- 19:26Speaker 3: then we managed to somehow get up a little bit,
- 19:28Speaker 3: and then we got knocked down again, and then we
- 19:29Speaker 3: managed to somehow get you know, and it was cyclic.
- 19:32Speaker 3: So my question then is what do we tell the
- 19:37Speaker 3: person that it just feels like the ocean is just
- 19:41Speaker 3: washing over you with negativity. Aside from believing that this
- 19:46Speaker 3: is all quote unquote happening for a reason. Yeah, what
- 19:49Speaker 3: happens next to keep that positivity to find the silver linings?
- 19:54Speaker 1: I think it comes down to establishing your personal code.
- 20:00Speaker 1: It makes you feel like there is another shot, that
- 20:04Speaker 1: there is another opportunity, whether that is your spiritual work,
- 20:08Speaker 1: your exercise, anything that you're doing that is committing yourself
- 20:13Speaker 1: to even eating right, what are you eating, what are
- 20:16Speaker 1: you putting inside of your body, any of those things
- 20:18Speaker 1: that connect you to who you are.
- 20:19Speaker 2: And a lot of times there are tasks or things
- 20:21Speaker 2: that we do every day.
- 20:22Speaker 1: People will be like, well, things are going horrible, but
- 20:24Speaker 1: like I run three miles every day for example. Well,
- 20:28Speaker 1: then I would say, well, let's step into the gratitude
- 20:30Speaker 1: that you have legs, Let's step into the gratitude that
- 20:33Speaker 1: you have breath in your body. Let's step into the
- 20:36Speaker 1: gratitude that you have your health. There's always something to
- 20:40Speaker 1: be grateful for. And I would offer that when it
- 20:43Speaker 1: feels that way, and it happens, and it happens a lot,
- 20:46Speaker 1: and it happened to me for a long time. People
- 20:47Speaker 1: are always like, oh, you're so positive. I work so
- 20:52Speaker 1: hard at presence and positivity. And that's the thing when
- 20:55Speaker 1: you see people who are consistently that or consistently motivated.
- 21:01Speaker 1: I work at that gratitude. Okay, this person passed. I
- 21:06Speaker 1: have three beautiful nieces and nephews that now I get
- 21:10Speaker 1: to help raise, right or.
- 21:12Speaker 3: You know this.
- 21:13Speaker 1: I didn't get this, and I didn't get that. You
- 21:16Speaker 1: have to find that place in you want to say
- 21:18Speaker 1: faith the size of a mustard seed. It doesn't mean
- 21:20Speaker 1: that it has to dominate every single thought that you
- 21:22Speaker 1: have every single day. But you find that one thing
- 21:25Speaker 1: that brings you back and take the time to identify
- 21:28Speaker 1: what that is instead of put your practice in. What
- 21:31Speaker 1: is making me even continue to have that thought? What
- 21:34Speaker 1: is the desire to have a positive thought? That alone
- 21:39Speaker 1: is a huge thing. The fact that you are willing
- 21:42Speaker 1: to say this is awful? How do I make it better?
- 21:47Speaker 1: That is spirit, That is life, and all of these
- 21:52Speaker 1: challenges that come. I would say that twenty twenty, though,
- 21:54Speaker 1: might be the year that we felt the most alive
- 21:56Speaker 1: because a lot of us were sort of in this pattern.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Dua dah da da da da dud dah. I was
- 22:00Speaker 2: in the pattern. I was in it.
- 22:02Speaker 1: I was ignoring what was really going on with me,
- 22:05Speaker 1: was like my passion was being ignited of really wanting
- 22:08Speaker 1: to be an actor again, and like, how do I
- 22:09Speaker 1: mix those two?
- 22:10Speaker 2: How does it work?
- 22:10Speaker 1: Because I've been spending way too much time on this
- 22:13Speaker 1: and not enough time on that, and I have been
- 22:15Speaker 1: unsuccessful in this arena. So being forced to slow down
- 22:18Speaker 1: sort of reinvigorated me and realigned me with my goals.
- 22:22Speaker 1: So I think that when we take that time to
- 22:24Speaker 1: tell ourselves to the truth, to get inside of the
- 22:27Speaker 1: truth of who we really are, and be willing to
- 22:28Speaker 1: face that.
- 22:30Speaker 2: I don't care if you wake up Toron and you're like,
- 22:31Speaker 2: I want to be a baker.
- 22:33Speaker 1: You took the time to figure out what's really going
- 22:36Speaker 1: on with you, because that's all you have at the
- 22:39Speaker 1: end of the day. What we have is ourselves. I
- 22:42Speaker 1: said it at the beginning, I'll say it again. You
- 22:45Speaker 1: get to decide how your life goes. Other people don't
- 22:48Speaker 1: determine your lives. Not your parents, not your lovers, not
- 22:51Speaker 1: your friends. Those are assets on top of what you have.
- 22:55Speaker 1: But what you actually have every single day is you
- 23:00Speaker 1: and what you choose to.
- 23:02Speaker 2: Do and be for you.
- 23:05Speaker 1: So I really want to encourage everyone at the end
- 23:09Speaker 1: of a tumultuous, crazy, troubling, exciting, in some ways beautiful year,
- 23:18Speaker 1: as opposed to necessarily having to listen on every single accomplishment,
- 23:21Speaker 1: you're still here and the fact that you're still here,
- 23:25Speaker 1: you're still listening, you are thriving.
- 23:27Speaker 2: And then you take that and you say, what do
- 23:29Speaker 2: I want not a list of We are not our accomplishments.
- 23:34Speaker 2: We are who we are. We are us, our authentic
- 23:37Speaker 2: selves and what are you going to do about that?
- 23:40Speaker 3: What you said before reminds me of something that I
- 23:43Speaker 3: did and exercise that I did earlier on in the pandemic,
- 23:47Speaker 3: when so many of my good friends were piecing out
- 23:50Speaker 3: from New York and it was me and I was,
- 23:52Speaker 3: you know, coming back to my why of why I
- 23:54Speaker 3: want to be here and how I feel like myself
- 23:56Speaker 3: here and how it's not my time to go just
- 23:58Speaker 3: because many other people are leaving.
- 24:00Speaker 4: I sat down and I made a list of things
- 24:04Speaker 4: that I do on my own that bring me joy.
- 24:08Speaker 3: And that's such a simple thing to do, right, Like,
- 24:11Speaker 3: just sit down for ten twenty minutes and think about
- 24:14Speaker 3: the things that I can do, whether it's like an
- 24:16Speaker 3: everyday task or something that might be a little bit special,
- 24:20Speaker 3: and articulate the things that make me happy, just me
- 24:25Speaker 3: and I think so often. I mean, we can talk
- 24:27Speaker 3: about this negative mindset. It's easy to be negative when
- 24:31Speaker 3: you feel alone or you are alone or you and
- 24:36Speaker 3: especially when you don't choose to be that way. So,
- 24:39Speaker 3: I mean, the bigger thing for me, and a really
- 24:41Speaker 3: big piece to the puzzle in being more positive and
- 24:44Speaker 3: to being content solo during all of this was Okay,
- 24:49Speaker 3: I can create my own joy, and I can choose
- 24:54Speaker 3: to be positive and like even just simple sentences like that,
- 24:58Speaker 3: like you said before, I encourage you to have a mantra.
- 25:02Speaker 4: Yeah, I can create my own joy.
- 25:04Speaker 1: That's right, you know, that's right, And that's the most
- 25:08Speaker 1: And also in that, I am sure that you've noticed
- 25:12Speaker 1: in this past ye are all the opportunity that exists
- 25:16Speaker 1: right so, like I said, as opposed to right now,
- 25:19Speaker 1: now that you've made it this far, right now, this time,
- 25:24Speaker 1: I don't know if there's a bigger time that I've
- 25:26Speaker 1: ever seen in my life where there is opportunity everywhere.
- 25:31Speaker 1: You always want to move to New York City it's
- 25:32Speaker 1: too expensive, well not anymore, like the.
- 25:34Speaker 2: Prices of drafts.
- 25:35Speaker 1: People are looking for people to hire, people are every
- 25:39Speaker 1: every major metropolitan city is an open door right now,
- 25:44Speaker 1: if that's something that you always wanted to do, and
- 25:46Speaker 1: like why you stayed, so now that you stayed.
- 25:48Speaker 2: You're already ahead of the curve.
- 25:50Speaker 1: So when things do start to return to our new
- 25:54Speaker 1: version of normalcy, because it's never going to be the
- 25:56Speaker 1: way that it was, you're already in the pocket. You're
- 25:59Speaker 1: already there. You don't have to find a place you
- 26:01Speaker 1: don't have to do X, Y and Z. You can
- 26:02Speaker 1: literally jump in and you're ready to go. But also
- 26:05Speaker 1: for anybody else that had these dreams in these goals,
- 26:08Speaker 1: now is the time. Now we have that little bit
- 26:12Speaker 1: of breathing room to create that time in that space,
- 26:16Speaker 1: and that jumping off point should be what's in your mind?
- 26:18Speaker 2: Like you said, what do I want? What?
- 26:21Speaker 1: Right now is probably one of the best times to
- 26:25Speaker 1: actually grasp and go for what you want. M Yeah,
- 26:29Speaker 1: and now have an opportunity. I totally feel that, And
- 26:32Speaker 1: I mean we did say the buzzword mantra.
- 26:35Speaker 3: When you have to think about the moments where you're
- 26:37Speaker 3: trying to be more positive, where you're trying to keep
- 26:39Speaker 3: your head up, what are the words of wisdom that
- 26:42Speaker 3: you are leading into most often?
- 26:45Speaker 1: Oof, I have a few when I feel like nothing's happening.
- 26:50Speaker 1: I definitely do the miracles. There's a there's a miracle
- 26:52Speaker 1: around every corner. And it's so funny, like the amount
- 26:56Speaker 1: like an Amazon bagage is the rise like joy.
- 26:59Speaker 2: I don't have to go to this's and by doghood
- 27:00Speaker 2: like no, literally.
- 27:01Speaker 1: I practice finding like those moments of joy through things
- 27:06Speaker 1: that may seem mundane, but just gratitude that we exist
- 27:11Speaker 1: in a world where things can happen like that. For me,
- 27:14Speaker 1: that's that's really it is the gratitude. And the other
- 27:17Speaker 1: thing is the sun always rises. It always does, and
- 27:24Speaker 1: it might take a little bit longer if I think about,
- 27:27Speaker 1: like me and my career will good. The sun's rising
- 27:29Speaker 1: seven years, seven years. It is never too late. You
- 27:35Speaker 1: are never too old, too young, too fat to this,
- 27:38Speaker 1: do that, to pretty, too ugly, too black, too brown,
- 27:42Speaker 1: to red, to anything. Every single day, every single moment,
- 27:47Speaker 1: is an opportunity to change your life.
- 27:49Speaker 2: And the sun always rises. It always does.
- 27:52Speaker 3: I think we've also been chatting a lot about like
- 27:55Speaker 3: how the negative things are happening and we're waking up
- 27:57Speaker 3: and it's like, oh, another thing today. But for someone
- 28:00Speaker 3: who does want to be proactive, for the person that is,
- 28:03Speaker 3: you know, I am going to take ownership over having
- 28:06Speaker 3: a positive mindset in twenty twenty one, what would be
- 28:11Speaker 3: something that they can do regularly. I know we've talked
- 28:14Speaker 3: a lot about having gratitude, but aside from maybe staying
- 28:18Speaker 3: out loud or speaking these things into existence, or keeping
- 28:20Speaker 3: a journal of these gratitudes, Like, what's another tool that
- 28:23Speaker 3: they can exercise from their toolbox to embody positivity.
- 28:28Speaker 4: In twenty twenty one.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Commit to not starting your day with bad news. Don't
- 28:32Speaker 1: understart your day with bad news. Oh I love that tip,
- 28:35Speaker 1: Like you do not put your phone down, You do
- 28:38Speaker 1: not put your phone on the thirty minutes before you
- 28:41Speaker 1: go to bed. And I want people to really think
- 28:43Speaker 1: about that, like what are you doing before you go
- 28:48Speaker 1: into your space? What are you thinking about?
- 28:51Speaker 2: And what are you doing? Are you reading a book
- 28:53Speaker 2: on positivity or are you watching you know, the news?
- 28:57Speaker 1: And in those first moments when you wake up, you
- 29:00Speaker 1: setting the tone for your day and whether or not
- 29:03Speaker 1: you want to entern into a specific practice or not.
- 29:05Speaker 1: When you open your eyes, are you rolling over and
- 29:07Speaker 1: grabbing your phone and turning on your television so that
- 29:10Speaker 1: you can be inundated from this place of fear or
- 29:13Speaker 1: good news or bad news?
- 29:15Speaker 2: Or you know the guy that used to date as
- 29:16Speaker 2: a new girlfriend.
- 29:17Speaker 1: If you're like digging around in someone's Instagram, or you
- 29:19Speaker 1: know this happened or that happened, or get on Twitter
- 29:21Speaker 1: and watch people uselessly fighting about stupid things that don't
- 29:25Speaker 1: actually mean anything.
- 29:27Speaker 2: You your life, your experience is precious.
- 29:32Speaker 1: Are you protecting it with what you're putting inside of
- 29:37Speaker 1: your body, and that means your mind, your mouth, all
- 29:41Speaker 1: of it.
- 29:42Speaker 2: What are you?
- 29:43Speaker 1: How are you starting and ending your day? So if
- 29:46Speaker 1: someone is struggling about what to do, how do you
- 29:48Speaker 1: start an end your day?
- 29:49Speaker 4: I also think to riff on that a little bit.
- 29:51Speaker 3: We talked about the list that I had made of
- 29:53Speaker 3: things that I can do to bring me joy, just
- 29:55Speaker 3: me as I am, but also being really intentional and
- 29:59Speaker 3: paying close to tension to the things in your day
- 30:01Speaker 3: that you do that actually make you feel good. So
- 30:05Speaker 3: beyond just like that workout, Like I am reminded when
- 30:08Speaker 3: I like open my fridge and I see a tub
- 30:11Speaker 3: of athletic greens, like drinking this makes me feel good.
- 30:13Speaker 1: So I'm the same way with like the protein that
- 30:17Speaker 1: I use or different things like that. I'm I'm I'm
- 30:20Speaker 1: about to get into the athletic greens too.
- 30:22Speaker 2: There's like train doing it. Yeah, do you just do
- 30:25Speaker 2: it with water?
- 30:25Speaker 3: What do you do?
- 30:26Speaker 4: You're all ten to twelve ounces of water one ice cube?
- 30:28Speaker 4: Shake it up.
- 30:30Speaker 1: Oh that's easy work because I always drink a thing
- 30:31Speaker 1: of water anyway. All right, I'm seriously gonna throw the
- 30:34Speaker 1: I'm gonna try it right now. I'm serious, But yeah,
- 30:38Speaker 1: you get to set your day. Just like you eat breakfast.
- 30:43Speaker 1: What's your soul eating for breakfast? What is your mind
- 30:46Speaker 1: eating for breakfast? Right? You want to start your day?
- 30:51Speaker 1: Some people, you know like a lighter thing. I like
- 30:53Speaker 1: to drink my protein and now my athletic greens. You know, like,
- 30:56Speaker 1: how are we starting our day? And you get to
- 31:00Speaker 1: give your soul the same food that you give your.
- 31:03Speaker 2: Body for sure, for sure?
- 31:06Speaker 3: Okay, so you have one opportunity to offer up one
- 31:11Speaker 3: more piece of advice on how to be more positive.
- 31:14Speaker 4: In twenty twenty one, Michelle Hines, what.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Do you tell the hurdlers if it gives you that tingle,
- 31:23Speaker 1: that scare, that little bit of fear, What if can
- 31:26Speaker 1: I do it?
- 31:30Speaker 2: Jump in the water is warm?
- 31:33Speaker 1: If you are coming up on something in your life
- 31:36Speaker 1: that makes you feel that, we all know what I'm
- 31:39Speaker 1: talking about. We've all had those moments, whether it's public speaking, proposing,
- 31:44Speaker 1: decide and have a kit, any of those things that
- 31:46Speaker 1: make you feel that excited, scared, nervous, but like kind
- 31:48Speaker 1: of jittery happy energy. Don't run from the challenges in
- 31:54Speaker 1: your life. Go towards them, run towards them. And I
- 31:58Speaker 1: promise if you're doing that, then you live authentically and
- 32:01Speaker 1: your life will change for the better. So do one
- 32:03Speaker 1: thing that you've been thinking about that you are afraid of.
- 32:07Speaker 1: Lace up those shoes and go outside and try to
- 32:09Speaker 1: go for a run. Call that girl that you've always wanted, like,
- 32:12Speaker 1: start completing the circle of your life.
- 32:16Speaker 2: Complete acts.
- 32:17Speaker 4: Michelle, what excites you about twenty twenty one? What are
- 32:19Speaker 4: you ampt about?
- 32:20Speaker 1: Oh, more life, travel really excites me, getting to hug
- 32:25Speaker 1: my friends. I'm going to find a partner in twenty
- 32:29Speaker 1: twenty one. Oh, I'm manifesting that. I'm manifesting it. He's
- 32:32Speaker 1: coming and for me, coming for both of us.
- 32:34Speaker 3: It is if your first date with the man that
- 32:37Speaker 3: you think is going to be your husband, I expect
- 32:40Speaker 3: a text message.
- 32:41Speaker 2: I promise you that you will get that text message.
- 32:43Speaker 4: All right, you're on my first text list, too perfect.
- 32:46Speaker 1: I'll probably tell him. I'll be like, listen, so I've
- 32:49Speaker 1: decided we're getting married. So that's not it all in
- 32:51Speaker 1: your mind. You should leave since I believe in brutal honesty.
- 32:56Speaker 1: So I'm manifesting a partner. More travel, more give biggs
- 33:01Speaker 1: or gigs for myself, more love and most importantly, more
- 33:05Speaker 1: love for all of us, more understanding and more people
- 33:08Speaker 1: voting and knowing what's going on locally in their city.
- 33:12Speaker 2: Know what's up. I love this.
- 33:14Speaker 3: I love you At Michelle. How do the hurdlers keep
- 33:17Speaker 3: up with you? How do they stay in the loop?
- 33:19Speaker 3: Give me the details, come hang out with me.
- 33:21Speaker 2: It's really difficult at Nichelle.
- 33:24Speaker 1: So Nichelle with an end, you want to work out
- 33:27Speaker 1: with me, it's it's in my freaking what are they profile?
- 33:30Speaker 1: You want to yep, slide in the DMS. You have
- 33:33Speaker 1: any questions, comments, concerns. And also shout out to all
- 33:36Speaker 1: the hurlers that hit me up afterwards. I really appreciate it.
- 33:40Speaker 1: For me being able to give the gift of positivity
- 33:45Speaker 1: and reminding people of who they are is the greatest,
- 33:47Speaker 1: one of the greatest gifts I've ever received in my life.
- 33:50Speaker 2: So shout out to all the hurdlers that started.
- 33:52Speaker 1: Rocking with me, that came to me through Emily, And
- 33:54Speaker 1: you can find me at Michelle anytime, any place.
- 33:57Speaker 4: Amazing.
- 33:58Speaker 3: I am over at Hurdle Podcast Austin at EMILYA. Boddy
- 34:01Speaker 3: another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
