Speaker 1: was like, you know, whatever that is when it's a
• 3:02
Speaker 1: good thing you did, flipp me off or anything like
• 3:04
Speaker 1: when you I'm in the park lot, that's good and man,
• 3:08
Speaker 1: that's awesome. That was great timing. And then we took

Speaker 1: off from there. Yeah, it's been really great. Thank you.

• 4:30
Speaker 1: of the first full year of the show, and uh,
• 4:33
Speaker 1: and then we'll re up something fun and new after that.
• 4:37
Speaker 1: Yeah fun, All right, here we go. Let me get
• 4:39
Speaker 1: started out. So, uh, this this was a submitted story.
• 4:42
Speaker 1: So so I'm on the management team. Here it is.
• 4:45
Speaker 1: I'm on the management team at a pretty well known
• 4:48
Speaker 1: indoor interactive attraction. They're not going to say the name.
• 4:53
Speaker 1: And after about a year, I get asked to start
• 4:55
Speaker 1: conducting interviews for supervisor roles that would be reporting directly
• 5:00
Speaker 1: to me. We had some solid candidates come through, but
• 5:04
Speaker 1: one interview with almost five up from almost five years ago,
• 5:09
Speaker 1: still lives rent free in my head. The candidate was
• 5:12
Speaker 1: scheduled for one PM. By one five, we still hadn't
• 5:16
Speaker 1: heard anything, so we tried calling and got no answer.
• 5:21
Speaker 1: At that point we assumed he'd just ghosted us, and
• 5:24
Speaker 1: we moved on their day. And then they just showed
• 5:27
Speaker 1: up at no explanation, no apology, and I reluctantly agreed
• 5:36
Speaker 1: to go ahead and interview them in a way.
• 5:38
Speaker 3: I don't no idea what, but josephro did they know
• 5:41
Speaker 3: it was that one or did they think it was
• 5:43
  Speaker 3: too I.
• 5:43
Speaker 1: Did say when I asked about the lateness. Okay. Here
• 5:46
Speaker 1: They look at me and say, I had things to do.
• 5:51
Speaker 1: I'm a busy man. Of course I'll have time for
• 5:54
Speaker 1: this interaction activity. Can you imagine that? That's crazy? You
• 5:59
Speaker 1: were running forty five It's like to an hour, you know,
• 6:01
Speaker 1: you everything? Okay, I'm busy. I have things to do. Bro,
• 6:06
Speaker 1: I'm working you to go to the bank. Wow. Okay,
• 6:10
Speaker 1: so I had already mentally moved on at that point. Yeah,
• 6:13
Speaker 1: but I finished the interview out of professionalism. Right then
• 6:18
Speaker 1: their phone rings, They answer it, excuse it, talks, I'm good,
• 6:24
Speaker 1: excuse themselves, and leave me sitting alone in the interview room.
• 6:29
Speaker 1: They come back and we picked back up and this, guys,
• 6:34
Speaker 1: did it happens again? So we did not offer him
• 6:37
Speaker 1: the job? Shocking? Yeah, I know. What followed was a
• 6:41
Speaker 1: series of calls to our office. This is this gets me.
• 6:48
Speaker 1: I just read for it.
• 6:49
  Speaker 4: It's like.
• 6:50
Speaker 1: What what followed was a series of calls to our
• 6:54
Speaker 1: office demanding to know why they didn't get it. What happened?
• 6:59
Speaker 1: I know that, mind you, mind you.
• 7:01
Speaker 3: He did not have to acceend the interview after he showed.
• 7:03
Speaker 1: Up for Our general manager eventually got on the phone
• 7:08
Speaker 1: and told them exactly why. Yeah, let me tell me.
• 7:10
Speaker 1: I have to say I respect it. Yeah. Yeah, some
• 7:14
Speaker 1: people really do walk into an interview and leave you
• 7:16
Speaker 1: with absolutely no questions. That's the decision you're gonna make.
• 7:21
  Speaker 1: It wasn't a hard decision.
• 7:22
Speaker 2: That that guy whoever interviewed him, and he's got the
• 7:25
Speaker 2: patients of a saint.
• 7:27
Speaker 3: I was just about to say that like calling and
• 7:29
Speaker 3: demanding why you don't get the job when he didn't
• 7:31
Speaker 3: even have to do the interview with you in the
• 7:33
  Speaker 3: first place.
• 7:34
Speaker 1: He showed up so because he literally said that he was.
• 7:37
Speaker 3: Already mentally checked out when the guy showed up, it's like,
• 7:39
Speaker 3: I'll just brush it past me whatever.
• 7:41
Speaker 1: Yeah, I was like, I'm not going to heard this
• 7:43
Speaker 1: guy just showed up late. Yeah, especially when you as
• 7:45
Speaker 1: soon as you ask. If if I asked, hey, you
• 7:48
Speaker 1: were you're running late? You know everything, he's like, oh,
• 7:51
Speaker 1: I had things to do, I'd have been like, okay
• 7:54
Speaker 1: I did too, Okay, so do I, which was.
• 7:58
Speaker 3: Why considering your interview was forty five minutes ago, So
• 8:01
Speaker 3: how about you just get up and get on out
• 8:02
  Speaker 3: of here.
• 8:02
Speaker 1: Well, it's like imagine repisode. I'm almost surprised.
• 8:06
Speaker 2: I mean, I guess you know, he's trying to be professional,
• 8:08
Speaker 2: but like if he has that behavior during the interview,
• 8:11
Speaker 2: can imagine work with somebody like that?
• 8:13
Speaker 1: Like, Yeah, we a meeting at noon. I think I
• 8:15
  Speaker 1: think here's here's why. I think. I think you should
• 8:18
Speaker 1: send in your bad interview stories. Yeah, not just your
• 8:21
Speaker 1: bad higher stories, some of those. Yeah. I mean, you
• 8:25
Speaker 1: know there are so many flame out, absolute train wreck interviews. Yeah,
• 8:30
Speaker 1: that would be so funny to like be in the
• 8:33
Speaker 1: room be like what to say. I've been at them.
• 8:37
Speaker 3: I'm just like what next time we film, I'm gonna
• 8:40
Speaker 3: come in like and say I had I had.
• 8:42
Speaker 1: Things to do. Sorry. When I asked THEE, so tell
• 8:45
Speaker 1: me why'd you why'd you leave that last job? You
• 8:47
Speaker 1: know what was up? And they get real serious on
• 8:51
Speaker 1: you and go, it's a lack of integrity of that company. Yeah,
• 8:57
Speaker 1: it's like a standard answer, And I'm like, interesting, Yeah,
• 9:02
Speaker 1: it was virtuous enough. I mean, you know, didn't didn't
• 9:05
Speaker 1: reach your standard values. It's kind of a red flag
• 9:08
Speaker 1: when they talk bad about it is a company anyway,
• 9:11
Speaker 1: It totally is. Yeah, there's so many young people who
• 9:14
Speaker 1: are just moving around in a job. I don't who
• 9:16
Speaker 1: cares you know, especially when you're young, you know, if
• 9:19
Speaker 1: you're experimenting you know who, because it just wasn't a
• 9:23
Speaker 1: great fit for the culture. Whatever it was, was it
• 9:26
Speaker 1: a right job for me unless you're applying for the
• 9:28
Speaker 1: same exact job, you know. Yeah, but whatever it is,
• 9:31
Speaker 1: you know, But to do you know, it just seems like,
• 9:36
Speaker 1: you know, like I'm gonna try to position myself as
• 9:39
Speaker 1: as elevated by saying the company wasn't up to my standards.
• 9:43
Speaker 1: You know, they just didn't have the integrity that you know,
• 9:47
Speaker 1: and I hear that. I can't tell you how many
• 9:49
  Speaker 1: times I've heard that. Yeah, I don't know. I do
• 9:53
Speaker 1: would love to see more higher stories, more interview stories.
• 9:57
  Speaker 1: That's insane. I mean, I just can't imagine.
• 9:59
Speaker 2: I feel like, you know, in interviews, you're trying to
• 10:01
Speaker 2: be the best version of yourself.
• 10:03
Speaker 1: Obviously, you're trying to best. This is the best, This
• 10:05
Speaker 1: is trying to be trying to be prompt, trying to
• 10:07
Speaker 1: be respectful, and so just like to be late is
• 10:10
Speaker 1: scary anyways, Like I did anxious to think about just
• 10:12
Speaker 1: being late to an interview. Can imagine the anxiety you
• 10:14
Speaker 1: would be under nath that I know you you just
• 10:17
Speaker 1: I mean I'll try to be that fifty five minutes early. Yeah,
• 10:19
Speaker 1: I mean Nathan would be.
• 10:22
Speaker 2: So can you imagine like if I'm talking to you,
• 10:26
Speaker 2: I really want this job. Oh sorry, I gotta take this.
• 10:28
Speaker 2: My buddy's calling me. Yeah, just give me a minute.
• 10:31
Speaker 2: He did that twice.
• 10:33
Speaker 1: Yeah, that's crazy. Before we dive back into the chaos
• 10:36

• 11:12
  Speaker 1: Go to bchecks dot io. That's bc h e X
• 11:17
Speaker 1: dot io. I don't know, all right, let's go. We
• 11:20
Speaker 1: got a segment that that we did. Who did the segment? Oh?
• 11:24
Speaker 1: This next to clip is this David?
• 11:26
Speaker 2: I think we got a segment store with David is yeah,
• 11:28
Speaker 2: and so I like David and so I interviewed David.
• 11:32
Speaker 1: I'll descend this to him afterwards. I think I mentioned
• 11:34
Speaker 1: that I was going to he's super nice. I added
• 11:37
Speaker 1: him on LinkedIn, and he's calling in from Saint Louis.
• 11:39
  Speaker 1: So here's David.
• 11:40
Speaker 6: We had hired a relatively young, not very experienced person
• 11:44
Speaker 6: for an entry level position within the organization. I interviewed them.
• 11:47
Speaker 6: They passed all the you know, background checks and all that,
• 11:50
Speaker 6: but it was pretty evident from like the first week
• 11:52
Speaker 6: that things didn't seem quite great. It wasn't a whoops,
• 11:55
Speaker 6: we should hire the wrong person, but it was definitely like,
• 11:57
Speaker 6: let's try to do what we can to help this
• 11:59
Speaker 6: person and along. But despite our efforts, things just weren't
• 12:03
Speaker 6: clicking with this person. So, you know, we have a
• 12:05
Speaker 6: time of a three month window of where we can
• 12:07
Speaker 6: like say, look, you know, this isn't quite working. Let's
• 12:09
Speaker 6: let's try to work on some improvement. And I sat
• 12:11
Speaker 6: down with him with the head of HR and talked
• 12:13
Speaker 6: about what we could.
• 12:14
  Speaker 1: Do to improve.
• 12:14
Speaker 6: So he started swearing at us about why our performance
• 12:18
Speaker 6: information that we were saying was false and the information
• 12:22
Speaker 6: that we had was fake. Everyone there was against him,
• 12:24
Speaker 6: and my resources were bad and then I pulled out
• 12:27
Speaker 6: all the reports that I had and showed him why
• 12:29
Speaker 6: the reports were right. He took his papers that he
• 12:32
Speaker 6: had and threw him across the room a storm, toward
• 12:34
Speaker 6: the door, and I'm like, wait, don't leave. Let let's
• 12:36
Speaker 6: let's talk about this now. In hindsight, I should have
• 12:38
Speaker 6: like asked him to stay. And he turned around. He goes,
• 12:41
Speaker 6: I don't want to be in a performance improvement plan.
• 12:43
Speaker 6: If I told you that I had a deadly disease,
• 12:46
Speaker 6: would that change your perspective? What are you talking about?
• 12:51
Speaker 6: He's like, well, if I shared with you that I
• 12:54
Speaker 6: have a disease that it's really you know, it's impacting
• 12:56
Speaker 6: me and it's impacting my performance, would that change anything.
• 12:59
Speaker 6: I'm like, you know what, this doesn't change anything at all.
• 13:01
Speaker 6: Your performance is not great. We're trying to put you
• 13:03
Speaker 6: an improvement plan. And so with that, he left the room,
• 13:06
Speaker 6: slammed the door so hard that it cracked the dry
• 13:09
Speaker 6: wall all the way up the ceiling. The door closes,
• 13:11
Speaker 6: and he starts screaming at everyone he can see the.
• 13:13
  Speaker 1: Police show up.
• 13:16
Speaker 6: He had threatened to pull out his gun, which he
• 13:17
Speaker 6: did not have, and shoot people. Definitely not greatest hiring
• 13:21
Speaker 6: moment with that individual.
• 13:25
  Speaker 1: Just escalated. Wers.
• 13:33
Speaker 3: Look, he was like, you threatened to pull out his
• 13:34
Speaker 3: gun that he did not have.
• 13:35
Speaker 1: Wait, do you love David's personality surrounded by this chaos out?
• 13:50
Speaker 1: I need more Davids in my life? Does a crazy
• 13:54
Speaker 1: story is insane? Well? What if I told you that
• 13:57
Speaker 1: I have a terminal disease? Could performance for proven Land
• 14:01
Speaker 1: if that was deadly ill? Would you not put me
• 14:04
Speaker 1: on it? He's not even saying because this is bad,
• 14:08
Speaker 1: I can say I'm deadly ill.
• 14:10
Speaker 2: You know, he's not even saying that he has a
• 14:12
Speaker 2: deadly because yeah, you say, yes. There are those moments still,
• 14:23
Speaker 2: those moments on the show with people where it's like
• 14:26
Speaker 2: they kind of come to a crossroads where it's like, okay,
• 14:28
Speaker 2: maybe it's maybe you give them the benefit of the doubt,
• 14:31
Speaker 2: and then they go over the top and they slam
• 14:33
Speaker 2: the door, curse, everybody, pull out their gun and stuff.
• 14:36
Speaker 2: It's like, okay, maybe they're past the point of no overturn,
• 14:39
Speaker 2: Like I really got to let them go.
• 14:41
Speaker 1: You know, that's just that'sn't saying. That escalated very quickly.
• 14:44
Speaker 1: Randall and I were talking this week about I think
• 14:46
Speaker 1: it's Zappos. I think is the name of the company.
• 14:48
Speaker 1: Is that is that the shoe company, shoe the shoe zapper,
• 14:56
Speaker 1: that's a shoe either one. It's they're known for their culture.
• 15:00
Speaker 1: Maybe someone can I think it is. I forget they
• 15:02
Speaker 1: were somebody could known for their culture. I think we did.
• 15:05
Speaker 1: You know, a year or two ago, we were studying
• 15:07
Speaker 1: some of their culture deck stuff as we were developing
• 15:09
Speaker 1: our culture deck and thinking about how to communicate it
• 15:11
Speaker 1: to our employees and stuff. And but he Randall's reading
• 15:17
Speaker 1: was reading a book or something. He was talking about them,
• 15:20
Speaker 1: and he was telling me that at the end of
• 15:24
Speaker 1: ninety days, because this guy was talking about that ninety day.
• 15:26
Speaker 1: They was talking about the ninety day kind of you
• 15:28
Speaker 1: know check in that they have a bonus that they
• 15:32
Speaker 1: will pay you if you resign. Oh wow. And then
• 15:36
Speaker 1: apparently the bonus gets bigger every month for the first
• 15:41
Speaker 1: several months after that, until it gets a certain amount
• 15:45
Speaker 1: that it's you know, basically, it's like, hey, we'll pay
• 15:49
Speaker 1: you to say out loud that you've already figured out
• 15:52
Speaker 1: this isn't a great fit for you. Interesting. What we
• 15:54
Speaker 1: don't want is for you to just kind of feel stuck.
• 15:57
Speaker 1: I guess the mediocre and like, I can't leave now
• 16:00
Speaker 1: to be too early on my resume, you know all that.
• 16:04
Speaker 1: You know people who are like, Eh, this isn't for me,
• 16:07
Speaker 1: but now I'm kind of stuck here for a bit.
• 16:09
Speaker 1: I'll spend a year or two and then yeah, you know,
• 16:11
Speaker 1: I thought, and I think it goes up to that.
• 16:18
Speaker 1: I think it was something maybe it went up to
• 16:20
Speaker 1: like year three or something. But I was like, I mean,
• 16:22
Speaker 1: I bet, I bet post year three retention is like
• 16:24
Speaker 1: really really good because you know they've made a financial
• 16:27
Speaker 1: decision that they could have gotten some quick money just
• 16:31
Speaker 1: to just to tap out and say, you know what
• 16:33
Speaker 1: wasn't for me. I just thought it was hiring.
• 16:36
Speaker 2: It is so interesting to me because it's like, if
• 16:40
Speaker 2: you're there's so much figuring out to do, you know,
• 16:42
Speaker 2: and so it's like, once you find somebody that you
• 16:44
Speaker 2: really really really like, you you know you want to
• 16:47
  Speaker 2: keep them. That's that's golden. A lot of times there's
• 16:49
Speaker 2: that whole figuring out process. Obviously an interview, but even yeah,
• 16:52
Speaker 2: those first three months, you're like, if this person is
• 16:55
Speaker 2: really bad in the long term, I'd rather know now
• 16:57
Speaker 2: in the first sixty ninety days, yea, and instead of
• 17:00
Speaker 2: figured out years down the line and all this damage stuff.
• 17:03
Speaker 1: A year down the line, yeah, a year. You know.
• 17:07
Speaker 1: I was, I was telling a story about the other
• 17:11
Speaker 1: day about you know, a bad hire maid, and I
• 17:16
Speaker 1: actually had a choice between two people, and I mean,
• 17:22
Speaker 1: I keep up with some reason why I couldn't hire
• 17:23
Speaker 1: the best qualified one, right, and and it was really
• 17:27
Speaker 1: stupid what I did, and it and I hired this
• 17:30
Speaker 1: other one right, and it was a complete utter disaster
• 17:37
Speaker 1: for a year. And the cost of it was it
• 17:41
Speaker 1: was millions of dollars because it was it was the
• 17:44
Speaker 1: lost you know, this was a regional manager's supposed to
• 17:47
Speaker 1: run this multimillion dollar region and you know, this region
• 17:50
Speaker 1: didn't grow. In fact, it contracted instead of growing. You know,
• 17:54
Speaker 1: just yes, it was just bad. It really cost Yeah,
• 17:58
Speaker 1: And and I thought, you know, I was analyzing later
• 18:02
Speaker 1: why I made that decision, you know, and because I
• 18:07
Speaker 1: followed the other person his career for a while and
• 18:11
Speaker 1: she just crushed it in her career. And I was like,
• 18:15
  Speaker 1: I had a chance to hire and I didn't. Dang.
• 18:17
Speaker 1: And you know, it's like one of the big in
• 18:21
Speaker 1: all the hiring I've ever done, probably it's such a
• 18:24
Speaker 1: big decision at all times, which is why it's it.
• 18:28
Speaker 1: It is the decision. We kind of just throw it
• 18:31
  Speaker 1: around these days.
• 18:32
Speaker 2: You know, you see LinkedIn jobs there's people hiring people fire,
• 18:35
Speaker 2: like leaving jobs is like, I guess it's not really
• 18:38
Speaker 2: even thought about, and especially you know we're in the
• 18:40
Speaker 2: background check industry. Like it's actually such a big, big piece.
• 18:43
Speaker 2: Like if you're gonna, like I said, like, if you're
• 18:45
Speaker 2: gonna know that this is not a good fit, I'd
• 18:47
Speaker 2: rather know now because that those types of just hiring
• 18:50
Speaker 2: decisions can make such crazy impacts and companies that are
• 18:54
Speaker 2: easy good or bad. Yeah, you know, it's it's scary,
• 18:57
  Speaker 2: it's real stuff.
• 18:58
  Speaker 1: Well, I mean it's it's where we're coming up. Do
• 19:00
Speaker 1: we just do your year? Yeah, it's kind of confusing.
• 19:03
Speaker 1: We haven't really decided on whether or not you were
• 19:05
  Speaker 1: I'm good. I'm just about a one year. First. I
• 19:08
Speaker 1: was like, are you talking about me? Oh? They got
• 19:10
Speaker 1: I think got cost dollars. I hired the wrong version.
• 19:14
Speaker 1: We said one year.
• 19:16
Speaker 2: Well, I started one year ago just about today part time,
• 19:19
Speaker 2: and I started full time six weeks ago. You out
• 19:22
Speaker 2: of California, I have like two start dates on most
• 19:24
Speaker 2: I guess I'm coming up on the start one.
• 19:27
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 19:27
Speaker 2: So it's been great, all right, Nithan, you got a story, yep, okay,
• 19:31
Speaker 2: so I got another software engineer story. So my company
• 19:35
Speaker 2: hires a software engineer for a fully remote role. The
• 19:39
Speaker 2: guy crushed every step of the interview. He is smart, articulate,
• 19:43
Speaker 2: sharp on whiteboard coding challenges, and he accepts the offer.
• 19:47
Speaker 2: We ship him the equipment and he sets up all
• 19:48
Speaker 2: of his accounts, and on Monday morning, he logs into
• 19:52
Speaker 2: our team stand up meeting with his camera on. And
• 19:55
Speaker 2: it is not the same guy.
• 19:58
  Speaker 1: Uh.
• 19:58
Speaker 2: And I don't mean that it's he's like kind of similar.
• 20:00
Speaker 2: Maybe the lightning is different. I mean it's a different
• 20:03
Speaker 2: human being, different face, different voice, different age. The guy
• 20:06
Speaker 2: that we interviewed looked maybe twenty eight years old. The
• 20:09
Speaker 2: person on the screen on Monday morning was closed to
• 20:11
Speaker 2: forty five. So I messaged my manager on Slack and
• 20:15
Speaker 2: I ask her, as casual as I can, do you
• 20:17
Speaker 2: think that Do you think this is actually him? She says,
• 20:20
Speaker 2: I think So I tell her to pull up the
• 20:23
Speaker 2: interview recording and we both go looking at the same time.
• 20:27
Speaker 2: The lightning is weird. I guess, and it is absolutely,
• 20:30
Speaker 2: definitively not the same person. So we pull him into
• 20:34
Speaker 2: a private Zoom meeting and my manager asks him directly,
• 20:37
Speaker 2: are you the same person that we interviewed. There's a
• 20:39
Speaker 2: long pause and he says, I'm working with him. The
• 20:43
Speaker 2: guy that we hired is his cousin.
• 20:45
Speaker 1: The cousin does the interviews and then he does the
• 20:47
Speaker 1: actual work and then they split the pay, which is crazy. Well,
• 20:53
Speaker 1: it sounds like the cousin has got the better part
• 20:55
  Speaker 1: of that deal.
• 20:56
Speaker 2: I just did the interview, yeah job, I guess the
• 20:58
Speaker 2: other guy just hash interview anxiety. I don't know. So
• 21:01
Speaker 2: it turns out this is a known and growing scam.
• 21:03
Speaker 2: People who specialize in passing technical interviews and then hand
• 21:07
Speaker 2: and then they hand the job off to someone else.
• 21:09
Speaker 1: Who actually does the work for a fraction of the salary.
• 21:12
  Speaker 3: Story you read.
• 21:13
Speaker 1: It's a little bit like that episode.
• 21:15
Speaker 2: Uh well, the interview, Yeah, the interviewer takes takes a cut,
• 21:18
Speaker 2: I guess. So we fired him, We blacklisted the cousin,
• 21:22
Speaker 2: and we notify the recruiting platform. The whole thing was
• 21:24
Speaker 2: over in about six hours, and the wildest part was
• 21:27
Speaker 2: that he was apparently pretty competent.
• 21:29
Speaker 1: He just was not the person we hired. I guess
• 21:33
  Speaker 1: that's a new one. I guess there's places in which
• 21:34
Speaker 1: that would work, in which the hiring team was you know,
• 21:37
Speaker 1: potentially you know, far enough away from you know physically
• 21:43
Speaker 1: or yeah, technically far enough away from you know, the
• 21:47
Speaker 1: project team where they're never going to be in you know,
• 21:50
Speaker 1: he shows up, it's you know, you're he's handed over,
• 21:52
Speaker 1: and so he just shows up, and yeah, everyone doesn't
• 21:55
Speaker 1: really you know, there are some holes in the plan,
• 21:58
Speaker 1: like if there are twins, that would really that we.
• 22:02
Speaker 3: Did have a story like that once where it was twins.
• 22:06
Speaker 1: Twins and yeah, great memory for the stories.
• 22:09
Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean she's you know, digging thro all the
• 22:11
Speaker 2: social eclips and here if we hear the stories, yeah yeah,
• 22:14
Speaker 2: but yeah, and also if they were me within two
• 22:16
  Speaker 2: years of each other's age, It's just like, I can't
• 22:18
Speaker 2: imagine there's one guy's twenties one guy's upper forties or
• 22:21
  Speaker 2: whatever it is.
• 22:22
Speaker 1: That's very strange. Holes and counting on what that guy's
• 22:26
Speaker 1: just count counting on and he probably doesn't know, but
• 22:29
Speaker 1: he's just counting on. And I'm hoping that first meeting
• 22:31
Speaker 1: I go to no one I interviewed with is there. Yeah,
• 22:35
Speaker 1: I guess so, And you're right.
• 22:36
Speaker 2: It's like, Okay, i'll do the one hour interview, you
• 22:39
Speaker 2: take the full time job.
• 22:39
Speaker 1: We'll go fifty to fifty. Like it's kind of a
• 22:42
Speaker 1: weird plan. Maybe it's just a cut of the first Yeah,
• 22:44
Speaker 1: and get me the five brand, give me five grand
• 22:46
  Speaker 1: to get.
• 22:47
Speaker 3: It's like, how did they think that was going to work?
• 22:51
Speaker 3: I don't know, interviewing with one person and then the
• 22:55
Speaker 3: other person doing the job, knowing that they can see.
• 23:00
Speaker 1: It's a growing scan work. If if if placement is
• 23:05
Speaker 1: separated like from the interview process, if they're hiring managers
• 23:10
Speaker 1: not involved in the hiring Yeah, like you know what
• 23:13
  Speaker 1: I mean.
• 23:13
Speaker 2: I know some companies are humongous, and so maybe that's
• 23:16
Speaker 2: maybe what they're going on. You know, I'm just like
• 23:19
Speaker 2: not ever just kind of slipping in and just not
• 23:21
  Speaker 2: ever being noticed.
• 23:22
  Speaker 1: I guess, yeah, I don't know.
• 23:23
Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess that makes sense. But still that's like
• 23:26
Speaker 3: how long do you how long do you think you're
• 23:28
Speaker 3: going to get away with that?
• 23:29
Speaker 1: So of these stories are kind of like just different
• 23:31
Speaker 1: versions of the same plot, and that that's a new
• 23:34
Speaker 1: one for me. I've never heard that.
• 23:35
Speaker 3: I've never heard that.
• 23:37
Speaker 1: You're right, there seems to be there seems to be
• 23:42
Speaker 1: this kind of recurring themes of the different types of
• 23:45
Speaker 1: blow ups. You know, hey, have you this guy twice today?
• 23:48
Speaker 1: I think we heard or in the last couple of
• 23:50
Speaker 1: shows where it starts off like, hey, everything started good
• 23:53
Speaker 1: for the first two weeks. You know, it's like when
• 23:58
Speaker 1: good behavior for two weeks, I don't know.
• 24:01
Speaker 2: We don't have a lot of bad heart stories where
• 24:03
Speaker 2: it's like in on their eleventh year they turned bad.
• 24:06
Speaker 1: Get like I always called an og flame out where
• 24:08
Speaker 1: he's just like, you know, I've just had it and
• 24:11
Speaker 1: blows up and yeah, but you know, the early the
• 24:16
Speaker 1: early flameouts, you know, it really is that kind of
• 24:19
Speaker 1: rough period in the end of feel like most talent
• 24:21
Speaker 1: acquisition for folks and recruiters are just holding their breath
• 24:23
Speaker 1: the whole time. And now, you know, and you've got
• 24:26
Speaker 1: to believe there's like some third party embarrassment too, when
• 24:29
Speaker 1: you're like somebody you freaking hired. Yeah, I remember a
• 24:33
Speaker 1: story about a girl who you remember the story with
• 24:36
Speaker 1: the It was a segment where she, yes, she's I
• 24:41
Speaker 1: remember it was a segment. I'm trying to remember her name.
• 24:43
Speaker 1: She was a recruiter. She she was so sweet and
• 24:46
Speaker 1: she she had such patience and this guy didn't show up.
• 24:49
Speaker 1: Oh yeah, and he didn't show up for the next day,
• 24:51
Speaker 1: and then he didn't show and then every day she's
• 24:53
Speaker 1: calling him, Yes, hey, are you gonna be here today?
• 24:56
Speaker 1: And finally he was like, can I just work remote? Yeah,
• 24:59
Speaker 1: like we did not agree to that was Ignacia? Is
• 25:01
Speaker 1: their name? What was your name? Ignacia? I think she
• 25:04
Speaker 1: was at San Francisco. Yeah, yeah, that's wrong, and it
• 25:06
Speaker 1: was just I don't know, it's like this is uh yeah,
• 25:12
Speaker 1: that's got to be that third part because you worked hard,
• 25:14
Speaker 1: you know, the hiring manager way, you're vouching for them,
• 25:17
Speaker 1: you know, and then you're like, yeah, I think she
• 25:21
Speaker 1: mentioned it as a reason I remember is like there's
• 25:24
Speaker 1: a little bit of this embarrassment that you just you know, yeah,
• 25:27
Speaker 1: somebody you honed in on, you know, just totally let
• 25:31
Speaker 1: you down when you did the placement. So yeah, uh probably,
• 25:36
Speaker 1: uh sorry, here we go, Emma, you ready, yes.
• 25:40
Speaker 3: To make sure my stories pulled up? Okay ready. In
• 25:43
Speaker 3: twenty twenty four, a popular US bank fired more than
• 25:47
Speaker 3: a dozen of its own wealth management employees. On the
• 25:49
Speaker 3: same day, all for the same reason. The reason, according
• 25:53
Speaker 3: to official financial industry regulatory authority filings, was, and I'm
• 25:58
Speaker 3: going to read you the exact language because it's too
• 26:00
Speaker 3: good to paraphrase. Simulation of keyboard activity creating impression of
• 26:06
Speaker 3: active work. That's the official language from a regulatory filing translation.
• 26:12
Speaker 3: They had been pretending to type.
• 26:13
Speaker 1: Oh, there you go.
• 26:15
Speaker 3: Here's how it works. A lot of companies that monitor
• 26:17
Speaker 3: remote employees use software that tracks mouse movement and keystrokes.
• 26:22
Speaker 3: If you're idle too long, it flags you, so naturally,
• 26:25
Speaker 3: a cottage industry emerged around this, and you can now
• 26:27
Speaker 3: buy little USB devices on Amazon called mouse jigglers that
• 26:30
Speaker 3: slowly wiggle your cursor for you to.
• 26:32
Speaker 1: Make it look like you're actively working.
• 26:34
Speaker 3: They run they're like ten bucks. Wow, several of the sorry,
• 26:41
Speaker 3: they're like ten bucks if you.
• 26:42
Speaker 1: Care, Yeah, here's the link.
• 26:44
Speaker 3: Yeah. Several of the bank's wealth management employees, people responsible
• 26:49
Speaker 3: for other people's actual retirement savings, apparently bought lees, plugged
• 26:52
Speaker 3: them in, and walked away from their desks for weeks,
• 26:55
  Speaker 3: possibly months.
• 26:56
  Speaker 1: That's crazy.
• 26:57
Speaker 3: Eventually the security team noticed that the movement and looked off.
• 27:01
Speaker 3: Apparently the wiggle of a real human hand looks different
• 27:04
Speaker 3: from the wiggle of a ten dollars USB stick, and
• 27:06
Speaker 3: this is evidently a known thing in it The bank
• 27:11
Speaker 3: filed everything with f I and RA, which means these
• 27:14
Speaker 3: terminations are now part of the official permanent record of
• 27:17
Speaker 3: the financial industry. Every one of those employees now have
• 27:21
Speaker 3: a regulatory file that says they were fired for simulating
• 27:24
Speaker 3: work activity that follows you for the rest of a
• 27:27
Speaker 3: finance career for ten bucks. That's crazy, all that for
• 27:30
Speaker 3: ten bucks. The wildest part is that if any of
• 27:32
Speaker 3: them had just occasionally moved the mouse themselves, they probably
• 27:35
Speaker 3: wouldn't have been caught, right they walked away and then
• 27:40
Speaker 3: walked back to their desk and moved it around themselves
• 27:44
  Speaker 3: to the gym.
• 27:44
Speaker 1: And or they could have done their job. I guess
• 27:47
Speaker 1: that's the scary part.
• 27:48
Speaker 2: Can you imagine, like, hey, how's my retirement doing, And
• 27:51
Speaker 2: it's like just being sqwiggled around.
• 27:53
Speaker 1: It's like, hey, I kind of need that money. That's
• 27:56
  Speaker 1: the scariest part. It's not like they're I mean, you're
• 27:59
Speaker 1: supposed to be looking in my count and paying attention. Yes,
• 28:01
Speaker 1: it's not like they're just doing I don't know, so much.
• 28:03
Speaker 1: It's crazy lazy. Some people are, oh yeah, that's insane. Well, yeah,
• 28:08
Speaker 1: there's a whole jiggler. It is the it's the remote work.
• 28:13
Speaker 1: I always say there's for remote work to be successful,
• 28:16
Speaker 1: it is going to be the right person and the
• 28:19
Speaker 1: right job aligned. Right. There's certain remote work jobs, there's
• 28:22
Speaker 1: certain remote work people. Put the two together and it's
• 28:25
Speaker 1: it's really great and there's a lot of benefits to it.
• 28:29
Speaker 1: If either one of those isn't great, right, if you
• 28:31
Speaker 1: don't have the right person. And clearly these twelve people
• 28:33
Speaker 1: weren't the right the right people because you know, given
• 28:37
Speaker 1: the freedom of not working in an accountable environment with
• 28:40
Speaker 1: peers around you and managers and all that, you decided
• 28:43
Speaker 1: to buy a ten dollar jiggler and try to get
• 28:45
Speaker 1: out of it. Just not work, you know. And I
• 28:49
Speaker 1: guess you know, the appeal of that is too strong.
• 28:52
Speaker 1: You know, it's like wow, it's they would never know.
• 28:55
Speaker 1: I think the technology, here's this. I've had that happen here.
• 29:00
Speaker 1: It was heartbreaking because it happened once and I brought
• 29:06
Speaker 1: I brought a person in and I coached him and
• 29:08
Speaker 1: loved on him and said, hey, man, you know that
• 29:11
  Speaker 1: can't happen again. I mean, it's a it's a it's
• 29:13
Speaker 1: a character issue. You know, he was young, he was
• 29:19
Speaker 1: and smart and had and had a lot of upside
• 29:22
Speaker 1: and and he did just a jiggler, right. And the
• 29:27
Speaker 1: software today that that's used, we use it is it's
• 29:34
Speaker 1: not just for detecting. It's also for safety and security
• 29:37
Speaker 1: when you went in a high secure environment, when you
• 29:39
Speaker 1: moved to certain pro when you move to certain things.
• 29:43
Speaker 1: So it can you know, it can track what you do.
• 29:45
Speaker 1: It can track if you use, if you upload something,
• 29:48
Speaker 1: the type of the websites you go to, it can
• 29:50
Speaker 1: and we can tag websites as productive others is not
• 29:53
Speaker 1: productive and keep people off of you know, uh, the
• 29:57
Speaker 1: sites they shouldn't be on in work time type of thing,
• 30:00
Speaker 1: you know. And and so there's and then and then
• 30:06
Speaker 1: it looks at your activity like, hey, they were there,
• 30:08
Speaker 1: they weren't their computer was dead for two hours, you
• 30:11
Speaker 1: know you and so you can look at it and
• 30:13
Speaker 1: and and tell. But the tech is significant and bright
• 30:20
Speaker 1: and I'm sure very expensive to build, right. And so
• 30:24
Speaker 1: the second time this uh, this, this uh, this happened
• 30:29
Speaker 1: with the same person. I think he had built a
• 30:32
Speaker 1: little app or some type of little Macro to switch
• 30:35
Speaker 1: tabs and move the cursor, so it looked like he
• 30:38
Speaker 1: was going between his here and here right. Yeah, and
• 30:44
Speaker 1: and uh so you know, as I said, I was like,
• 30:46
Speaker 1: you do you do? You do you think really that
• 30:49
Speaker 1: you know, a Macro you could build in fifteen minutes
• 30:51
Speaker 1: is going to you know that the the system that
• 30:54
Speaker 1: this company has spent millions of dollars building, and this
• 30:58
Speaker 1: company has got a value wation of x dollars, you
• 31:02
Speaker 1: has very valuable company. Do you think the whole company
• 31:05
Speaker 1: was going to be undone under your fifteen cent either macro?
• 31:08
Speaker 1: You know, you think it's not going to pick it up?
• 31:10
Speaker 1: It picked it up instantly, sent an alert, you know
• 31:13
Speaker 1: that you know potential. I forget what the alert was,
• 31:18
Speaker 1: but you know I don't, and I hated it, you know,
• 31:22
Speaker 1: and I think that I think for some people just
• 31:24
Speaker 1: the appeal of not working it's too strong and you know,
• 31:28
Speaker 1: the idea that they could do that. Yeah, but yeah,
• 31:30
Speaker 1: it was a big COVID hit. There was a lot
• 31:34
Speaker 1: of words of jigglers something. I guess that's what I started.
• 31:39
  Speaker 2: I meaneah, I mean, I just I can't imagine. So
• 31:41
Speaker 2: I work remotely almost all the time, and I can't
• 31:44
Speaker 2: imagine ever trying to get away with it, like I've
• 31:47
Speaker 2: got too much of my plate because the thing is
• 31:49
Speaker 2: like it's not just the fact of like, Okay, maybe
• 31:52
Speaker 2: I could like sneak in a day off there, Like
• 31:54
Speaker 2: even if I ever could, it's like I got so
• 31:57
Speaker 2: much to do. I have to like show, hey, here's
• 31:59
Speaker 2: the stuff we've been working on, you know, So it's
• 32:01
Speaker 2: like what's the plan on the other side. I guess
• 32:03
Speaker 2: even when we were talking about people stacking up jobs
• 32:05
Speaker 2: where like they have two or three full time jobs.
• 32:08
Speaker 1: I guess those are just easy jobs. I don't know,
• 32:10
  Speaker 1: but it's like.
• 32:11
Speaker 2: Your job is worth doing, then you'll actually just do
• 32:14
Speaker 2: it and then you'll have stuff to show for it too,
• 32:16
Speaker 2: you know. But it just like blows my mind. I
• 32:18
Speaker 2: guess people just think it's like a screen saver. We're like, oh,
• 32:21
Speaker 2: if there's screens on, then then I'm good, so that
• 32:23
Speaker 2: they think it's that simple, But it's like the technology
• 32:26
Speaker 2: is probably a little bit smarter than that of like
• 32:28
Speaker 2: your computer's honors off.
• 32:29
Speaker 1: Yeah, it's the tech today is and it's just it's
• 32:32
Speaker 1: getting better now. It's probably AI layered all in it
• 32:35
Speaker 1: and yeah, you know, so it just absolutely connect whether
• 32:38
Speaker 1: you're working or not working, and so and I'm glad
• 32:42
Speaker 1: they exist, and you know, we let our team know
• 32:46
Speaker 1: and this is what you this is what happens, and
• 32:48
Speaker 1: this is you know, this is on there normal accountability.
• 32:51
Speaker 1: You know, Initially it was I felt I had a
• 32:54
Speaker 1: even I had a problem is that it feels very big brother,
• 32:56
Speaker 1: but that I realized that even here's here's what happened,
• 33:01
Speaker 1: that there have been multiple people in an organization that
• 33:04
Speaker 1: are really good people that just over time got pulled,
• 33:09
Speaker 1: you know, by distractions and flexibility. The next thing, you know,
• 33:13
Speaker 1: and they're you know, the amount of time they spent
• 33:15
Speaker 1: working went from crushing it to just nearly part time.
• 33:21
Speaker 1: And it was like a slow boil. It's like you know,
• 33:26
Speaker 1: and it wasn't malicious, just the loss of discipline and
• 33:30
Speaker 1: of having to get up, walk through the front doors
• 33:32
Speaker 1: of a place, have your peers around you, sit at
• 33:35
Speaker 1: your desk. You know, you know, if you're not there,
• 33:38
Speaker 1: people notice physically. And so without all of those environmental
• 33:46
Speaker 1: kind of guardrails, you know, it allows some people to slip.
• 33:53
Speaker 1: And you know, it's and I don't necessarily think it
• 33:56
Speaker 1: was malicious. And so there were times when we had
• 33:58
Speaker 1: to you know, talk to people and say, hey, look
• 34:02
Speaker 1: what's happened, you know, and this happened over time and
• 34:05
Speaker 1: show them and they're like get in, they get They're like,
• 34:09
  Speaker 1: I don't know what I was thinking. You know, I
• 34:12
Speaker 1: went shopping the middle of the day. Yeah I went,
• 34:15
Speaker 1: I went and got my car clean and did this,
• 34:17
Speaker 1: ran ran there and they see it. Know, I was
• 34:19
Speaker 1: gone five hours and I did that two days this week,
• 34:21
Speaker 1: three days, like yeah, you know, and don't mean it,
• 34:25
Speaker 1: and it just happens, you know, it slowly happens, and
• 34:27
Speaker 1: and so you know, sometimes you get to coach them.
• 34:31
Speaker 2: Back to and then and then some people put more
• 34:34
Speaker 2: work into now working than than if they would. There's
• 34:37
Speaker 2: the absolute let me just just have four full time
• 34:40
Speaker 2: jobs and just like lie about it being.
• 34:41
Speaker 1: Out all of the all this.
• 34:43
Speaker 3: How many times we like told a story about somebody
• 34:47
Speaker 3: trying to get around working and where I'm like, that
• 34:50
Speaker 3: sounds like a lot of work.
• 34:53
Speaker 1: Work, that sounds like a lot of work. Yeah, I
• 34:56
Speaker 1: don't get it. Well, hey, that's it for us today.
