Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, the future professional rugby on the agenda at today's
- 0:04Speaker 1: NZR Summit. A confidential document reveals options for scrapping either
- 0:08Speaker 1: the MPC or Super Rugby remains a live possibility. Nick Bewley,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Newstalk ZB, Canterbury Sports, commentator with us this morning. Nick,
- 0:15Speaker 1: good morning.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Morning, Ryan.
- 0:16Speaker 1: So what's happening today?
- 0:19Speaker 2: Very good question, actually. Look, the likes of provincial unions,
- 0:23Speaker 2: representatives from the PUs, representatives from super rugby franchises, New
- 0:26Speaker 2: Zealand Rugby, the Players Association are all meeting at the
- 0:29Speaker 2: summit in Wellington. Now, look, as you just outlined there,
- 0:33Speaker 2: a document has made its way into the media which
- 0:34Speaker 2: outlines three possible options for the domestic professional game here
- 0:38Speaker 2: in New Zealand around super rugby franchises. and the NPC. Now,
- 0:41Speaker 2: according to the Herald, these are indicative, Ryan, so they're
- 0:45Speaker 2: not necessarily voting on anything today, and they might decide
- 0:47Speaker 2: to go down a very different path or do nothing
- 0:50Speaker 2: at all. It feels like something has to be done
- 0:51Speaker 2: because New Zealand rugby is losing money hand over fist.
- 0:54Speaker 2: But the juiciest one, as you outlined there, option C,
- 0:57Speaker 2: which is driven by the provincial unions, is to drop
- 1:00Speaker 2: Super Rugby altogether, cut the Australian's and establish an 8-10
- 1:04Speaker 2: team national competition. The other options are largely unchanged model
- 1:10Speaker 2: except for some amalgamation in the main centres like where
- 1:13Speaker 2: I am here in Christchurch where you've got Canterbury and
- 1:15Speaker 2: the Crusaders. That's to reduce duplication of roles. in the
- 1:19Speaker 2: five main centres and the second option effectively is the
- 1:22Speaker 2: same as the first while adding two New Zealand teams
- 1:26Speaker 2: to Super Rugby there's currently 10 there is no suggestion
- 1:29Speaker 2: on where those teams would come from but as I
- 1:31Speaker 2: say it's more a meeting of the minds today as
- 1:33Speaker 2: opposed to Let's vote on this and this is what's
- 1:36Speaker 2: going to happen. And for anyone who's followed the professional
- 1:39Speaker 2: rugby landscape for the last 30 years, they'll know that
- 1:43Speaker 2: these summits and meetings have happened in the past and
- 1:48Speaker 2: progress has been glacial or non-existent.
- 1:51Speaker 1: And we know Kirk wants to cut $ 20 million a
- 1:53Speaker 1: year in costs. Which of these options, Nick, which is
- 1:56Speaker 1: the more expensive one? You know, where would you get
- 1:58Speaker 1: your most bang for your buck?
- 2:00Speaker 2: Well, it probably is the third one, Ryan, because we
- 2:03Speaker 2: have a super rugby competition of 10 teams. We have
- 2:05Speaker 2: an MPC men's competition at the moment of 14 unions
- 2:10Speaker 2: to go from what is effectively 24 teams and two
- 2:14Speaker 2: competitions all of a sudden to one competition with eight
- 2:18Speaker 2: to 10 teams. It would be the biggest change in
- 2:20Speaker 2: the history of the professional game, which goes back to
- 2:22Speaker 2: the mid-90s. But I just cannot see a world in
- 2:26Speaker 2: which that happens. Super Rugby, as I say, it's been
- 2:29Speaker 2: established for some time now. They desperately want more privatisation,
- 2:34Speaker 2: as we are starting to see in netball, as we
- 2:36Speaker 2: will soon see in cricket. I find that unlikely. I
- 2:39Speaker 2: heard Gregor Paul on Newstalk ZB yesterday say that, you know,
- 2:44Speaker 2: I give that a less than 1% chance, but it
- 2:46Speaker 2: just feels like something has to give because outside of
- 2:49Speaker 2: the All Blacks, New Zealand rugby isn't making money.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Yeah, needs must, Nick Bewley, Newstalk ZB, Canterbury Sports Commentator.
