- 0:00Hi everyone. Welcome to Mini Scroll, the
- 0:03daily Internet culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories
- 0:07from social media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:10Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:14I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:17media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:22everyone. All right, before I get into it,
- 0:25Please remember to rate, review and subscribe.
- 0:27Please Spotify star rate US. We're trying to get to 1000
- 0:29Spotify star ratings by the end of the year, please.
- 0:32I think there's only six weeks left of the year, so please rate
- 0:37US. Before I get into the official
- 0:38stories, I wanted to let you guys know what I decided on the
- 0:41Colleen Ballinger situation. And that is, I'm not sure.
- 0:46I think if I'm going to cover her in general, I will make it a
- 0:50more in depth episode as somebody suggested in the
- 0:53comments. I thought that was a great
- 0:54suggestion. So I'm considering making it
- 0:57like a mini deep dive. You know how sometimes I'll do
- 0:59those on Fridays instead of a mini scroll for next Friday
- 1:02because this Friday we have a deep dive.
- 1:03But yeah, I'm not sure yet if I'm going to do it.
- 1:06But if I do cover her, I want to cover her more in depth and
- 1:09properly. All right, the first story that
- 1:11I have for you guys today is Michaela Naguera has launched
- 1:15color cosmetics, her brand, and it's not really going that well
- 1:20so far. So we all know that Michaela
- 1:22Naguera launched her own brand called POV Beauty in March of
- 1:26this year. She launched with a skin care
- 1:28range and now this week has officially launched color
- 1:32cosmetics. So the first color cosmetics to
- 1:34come out of this side of the brand is called the Ampit Lip
- 1:38Kits. It's a spin off of PO VS ampit
- 1:42lip. I cannot say ampit without
- 1:44wanting to immediately say amp it up, amp it up Ampit lip
- 1:48treatment. So she has released basically a
- 1:51colored version of this lip treatment and a matching lip
- 1:55liner to make a lip kit. OK, so despite being a lip
- 1:59treatment, she did promise that they would be highly pigmented.
- 2:03She promised that they would not be sticky, like, you know, a
- 2:05sticky lip gloss. And she also promised that the
- 2:09lip liner liner had ultra grip. She called it so it didn't wear
- 2:12off. And she did all these videos
- 2:14showing like it didn't come off with water.
- 2:16It barely came off with a makeup wipe.
- 2:17She was like, these lip liners are so tough.
- 2:20So these kids sold out almost immediately.
- 2:23And honestly, they did sound like a great idea.
- 2:25I think like a liner and a glossy bomb vibe that is so
- 2:29trendy right now. And like I said, Michaela's
- 2:31videos showing how grippy the liners are meant to be.
- 2:34Like they were genuinely very convincing.
- 2:36However, as consumers have started to receive them, it
- 2:39seems as though Michaela's promises were maybe a little bit
- 2:42hollow. So people have been having
- 2:44issues with the pigmentation of the lip treatments, which is
- 2:47making them appear patchy on users because they're a lot more
- 2:51sheer than she initially said that they would be.
- 2:54People are also having issues with stickiness, especially
- 2:57given how much product you need to apply to avoid having the
- 3:01patchiness from the lack of pigmentation.
- 3:04And there's also issues with the lip liners.
- 3:05People are saying that they actually do wear off much faster
- 3:08than she claims. So anyways, this is just a
- 3:11classic example of an influencer brand not living up to the hype.
- 3:15And you know, I know that we are possibly more critical, not like
- 3:21me, but just like us, like Internet users and beauty
- 3:25consumers are more critical of influencer brands.
- 3:29Like we look at them with a more critical eye.
- 3:31We review them differently than if this lip kit was released by
- 3:34a Faceless brand, for example. But the reason for that is
- 3:38because these people, first of all, have made millions of
- 3:41people trust them right from the reviews and from the years
- 3:44online. And second, they have had such
- 3:47an insane head start compared to others in the industry.
- 3:51For example, Michaela has investors and partners in POV,
- 3:55which is a good idea, right? So that she can avoid a lot of
- 3:58the mistakes that we saw a lot of the really early beauty gurus
- 4:01do or make. Because they were trying to do
- 4:04it all themselves and own 100% of their company and like be the
- 4:07CEO and whatever. And that was obviously not their
- 4:09area of expertise. So I think it was really smart
- 4:12that she went with some partners and investors.
- 4:14However, obviously her social media fame would have made it
- 4:18infinitely easier for her to secure that investment and find
- 4:21those partners. You know, she didn't need to
- 4:23necessarily self fund a portion of her brand early on to prove
- 4:27to investors that it was viable or it was a good product, for
- 4:30example. And she also has a built in
- 4:32audience for her brand, meaning she's had to spend a lot less
- 4:35money on marketing, paid ads, salaries for a marketing team, a
- 4:41sales team, whatever. So there's just like quite the
- 4:44head start there. And I'm not saying that
- 4:47influencers are not incredibly hard working.
- 4:50I'm not saying that she hasn't worked really hard to build her
- 4:53following and influence. And now that hard work has
- 4:55opened doors for her. Because obviously, like, whether
- 4:58you like Michaela or not or you think she's a liar or not, she's
- 5:01obviously worked really hard and built herself a lucrative
- 5:04career. So yeah, I do think it's fine
- 5:06for influencers to leverage their hard work and to pivot
- 5:10into something else and to take that hard work that they have
- 5:13done in another area of their career and be able to use that
- 5:17in their pivot. Like we all obviously do that in
- 5:20some way or another in our careers.
- 5:22But you can't have it both ways in life, sadly.
- 5:25Like, you can't have all the influence and money and power
- 5:29that comes with being one of the most famous influencers in the
- 5:32beauty space right now without the consequences of that
- 5:35extremity. And one of those consequences is
- 5:38that when you launch a brand and ask people to spend their
- 5:41personal money on it, especially right now, given the economic
- 5:46situation of, you know, a lot of countries around the world, your
- 5:49brand will be held to a higher standard because your starting
- 5:54position was much further along. So, yeah.
- 5:56Are some of these reviews possibly a bit nitpicky?
- 6:00Sure. But that's why.
- 6:02OK, The next story that I have for you guys is I'm going to
- 6:04breakdown what's going on with the New York City influencer
- 6:07Famita Merez going viral all over social media for really
- 6:11horrible reasons. And big trigger warning here,
- 6:14this story involves the death of a dog.
- 6:16So this creator named Femida has several accounts online where
- 6:20she posts mostly food and lifestyle content.
- 6:23Her main account is Medes, like MEDES OO0.
- 6:29And a few days ago, people started talking about her
- 6:31because of a food review scandal.
- 6:35And now this scandal has snowballs and Internet users
- 6:39have learned more about her, looked into her, and they have
- 6:41discovered something else really dark in her history.
- 6:45So this is what the food review situation was.
- 6:47So Femita was invited by the restaurant chef Papa in New York
- 6:51City to do a meal collab where she ate for free in exchange for
- 6:56a tip and posting a review of the restaurant.
- 6:59The restaurant owner basically put her on blast claiming that
- 7:02they comped her a $200 meal. They took a bunch of that to go
- 7:05home. Like Famita, and I think she was
- 7:07with her husband, took a bunch of it home indicating they
- 7:09obviously enjoyed the food. They never said anything
- 7:12otherwise. However, she ended up leaving a
- 7:14$6 tip on a $200 meal and she didn't post despite the
- 7:20restaurant following up a ton after the restaurant posted that
- 7:22Famita didn't honor their agreement.
- 7:24Famita did post about the restaurant.
- 7:26She said the food was horrible, the food smelled bad and the
- 7:31service was bad. So this is what the restaurant
- 7:33said to that she. Posted the video after I made
- 7:35the video about her not honoring her agreement with us.
- 7:41This was the comment that she left on our post which she
- 7:43deleted. It's basically the same thing.
- 7:45She's saying the food was terrible, service was terrible,
- 7:48and she didn't want to post a video misleading her followers
- 7:51because she believes in transparency which is crazy.
- 7:56This was my response stating basically you came to my
- 8:00restaurant, you ate the food, we asked you how was everything.
- 8:04You told us everything was great, service was great, food
- 8:08was great. Then you left the restaurant
- 8:10knowing that you weren't going to post us because you thought
- 8:13everything was terrible. But not only do you sound super
- 8:17ignorant because if you know Vietnamese food, you know it's
- 8:20known for strong aroma, fish sauce, shrimp paste, and even
- 8:25our food is Americanized because at home when we cook it, it's
- 8:29meant to be super strong. Maybe you didn't know that
- 8:31because everyone has a complex palette.
- 8:34You know I won't blame you for it and it won't be Vietnamese
- 8:36food won't be for everyone. But you can't make the excuse
- 8:39saying the food was terrible, so I'm not going to post them.
- 8:42If you truly did not enjoy the food, you would have told me or
- 8:46the server the food wasn't good. I didn't like it.
- 8:49You know, I don't want to mislead my followers.
- 8:50I don't want to post a video featuring a restaurant, and I
- 8:53would have been fine with that. You could have paid the bill and
- 8:55left. But no, you told us everything
- 8:58was great, food was great, service was great.
- 9:01You packed everything to go $200 worth of food for two people.
- 9:05OK, so the way that she handled the situation went kind of
- 9:08viral. I mean, how many times do we
- 9:10need to see this? I'm really surprised.
- 9:12Maybe like I just am a little bit old because, you know, I
- 9:16used to do YouTube and like, I used to do that kind of stuff.
- 9:18I used to do restaurant collabs all the time because until
- 9:21you're like a really big influencer, you know, you, you
- 9:24have to do a lot of collabs. Basically, I would do restaurant
- 9:27collabs all the time. I have tons of friends that
- 9:29still do restaurant collabs. It's like a known thing.
- 9:32You have to post about the restaurant.
- 9:33If you didn't like your experience, you don't
- 9:34necessarily have to still post something positive, but you have
- 9:37to post that you were there. You have to tag the restaurant,
- 9:39You have to do the agreement. And how many times have we now
- 9:42talked about these influencers from TikTok who, like, don't
- 9:46hold up that end of the agreement?
- 9:48Anyways, so the way she handled this went really viral and has
- 9:51now unearthed a much bigger issue in her past, that Femita
- 9:55and her husband were babysitting a Husky and the dog allegedly
- 9:59died in their care. After the dog allegedly died in
- 10:02their care, they allegedly put the dog's body in a garbage bag
- 10:06inside of a suitcase to deliver it back to the owner.
- 10:09And the reason why people know this story is because there are
- 10:13clips of it on TikTok and it appears to be Femita and her
- 10:17husband in the video. I'm not going to play the clip
- 10:20but you can find them floating around on TikTok.
- 10:22And now one of the biggest pieces of conversation around
- 10:25this whole situation is the fact that Fumita cannot stop posting
- 10:29multiple times a day like nothing is happening.
- 10:32She has turned her comments off but she hasn't addressed any of
- 10:35the controversy around her. And she has posted a few videos
- 10:39recently, like just in the last day or so with captions,
- 10:42including this one. Literally just let people be
- 10:45wrong about you. It does not matter.
- 10:47It's not your job to make sure so that everyone's perceptions
- 10:49of you are accurate. Just be a good person and let
- 10:52them be. OK.
- 10:54Sure, but I fear if thousands of people thought that I had
- 10:58something to do with animal abuse or possibly a dog dying in
- 11:02my care, I would be clearing that up real fast if it was not
- 11:07accurate. OK and the last story that I
- 11:09have for you guys is I need to talk about how the I Justine
- 11:13song is going viral everywhere and all of the AI accusations
- 11:17against it. So on November 6th a TikTok user
- 11:21Kira dropped a music video for her song I Justine about the OG
- 11:25tech YouTube I Justine. It's like a hyper bubble gum
- 11:29Electro pop song. The song is literally triple
- 11:33platinum in my household. Like I listen to that song all
- 11:36day everyday. I am so obsessed with it.
- 11:38It's so fucking good. And I am not the only one who is
- 11:42obsessed with it because everybody is obsessed with it.
- 11:45Like it is all over TikTok. People are losing their minds.
- 11:48I think it's so much fun. But as the song started to pick
- 11:50up steam over the past couple of weeks, people started
- 11:53speculating that it was AI generated.
- 11:55So on November 8th, TikTok user at the Bella Luxury posted a
- 12:00video accusing the track of being a AI, which helped push
- 12:03the rumor further. Kira uploaded a TikTok showing
- 12:06her producing the song in real time to prove that it was human
- 12:09made, but the conspiracy theories unfortunately did not
- 12:13stop. By November 10th, Tik Toker at
- 12:15Jonah Taylor claims that Kira blocked him for asking whether
- 12:18the song was AI, which he took as proof that it was AI.
- 12:23His video went pretty viral. It got almost 1,000,000 views in
- 12:27you know, just four days. And then things really escalated
- 12:31on November 12th when Kira posted and later deleted a
- 12:35statement saying she was quitting music altogether and
- 12:38might delete the song. The announcement spread across
- 12:40TikTok. It's spread across X.
- 12:42And she later followed it up with another video denying the
- 12:45AI accusations, again claiming that this guy Jonah Taylor
- 12:49actually blocked her. And then I just seen herself
- 12:53posted with the song and said that she doesn't care if it's AI
- 12:57or not because you know, obviously she loves the song.
- 13:00After seeing that, I just seen herself had posted about it.
- 13:03Kira updated her earlier statement about quitting writing
- 13:06on YouTube. OK I just seen let just use the
- 13:09audio on TikTok. Holy goat.
- 13:11Oh my God. If that isn't a sign to stay
- 13:13then I don't know what is. I am in the camp that it's not
- 13:17AI. I've seen a lot of people be
- 13:20like, do we just like not remember that this kind of like
- 13:22Electro hyper pop, like this sound has existed forever?
- 13:27I just feel so I mean, I don't know if it's AI.
- 13:29I don't think it is. I'm going to believe her that
- 13:31it's not AI, but I just like feel so bad for artists because
- 13:36it's just keeps happening. And we've talked about it so
- 13:38many times on this podcast and I've told you guys the story so
- 13:40many times. But we've had accusations over
- 13:42the years of our deep dives being written by AI.
- 13:45And the fact that they're not like they are literally hand
- 13:49handwritten, hand researched, hand hand researched, I don't
- 13:52think is a chart, but you know what I mean?
- 13:53They are researched by humans. They are handwritten by
- 13:58Annabelle and I. And the fact that for hours,
- 14:01like they take us hours and hours and hours and hours to
- 14:04write the deep dives to research and put them together.
- 14:07And the fact that people think that they're just AI and accuse
- 14:10us of that as if they know for a fact they're like, well, no,
- 14:13it's written. It sounds so much like tattoo BT
- 14:14OK, well, like, it's not it's it's not.
- 14:17I don't know what else to tell you.
- 14:18It's not. It's so infuriating.
- 14:20So this song is not AI. And this was going like viral
- 14:24that she made this song with AI. Like, I totally get why she's so
- 14:28frustrated. And she's like, I might as well
- 14:30just quit. And I feel like we're just going
- 14:31to see more and more of these problems amongst creatives and
- 14:35artists because yeah, like people are just we're we're so
- 14:39attuned now to just assume that things are created with AI.
- 14:43It's good that we're keeping an eye on it, but I think it's
- 14:46really, really unfortunate because at the end of the day,
- 14:48like people can still make like really good stuff.
- 14:51People can make fun things without AI, Like we can think
- 14:55without AI still. And it's really frustrating for
- 14:59a creative to feel like their work is being diminished because
- 15:03people are just jumping to that conclusion.
- 15:05Anyways, guys, that's it for me. Scroll today.
- 15:07Thank you so much for listening. I love you guys.
- 15:10Please remember to rate, review and subscribe.
- 15:12Please Spotify star rate US Annabelle will talk to you guys
- 15:15tomorrow and then I will talk to you again on Thursday.
- 15:18Bye.
