- 1:12Speaker 10: Hour of hell. What's up, and welcome to Movie Meltdown's
- 1:34Speaker 10: Attack of the Killers soundtrack. I am Brian. Joining me
- 1:37Speaker 10: today is Jacqueline and Nick, both previous guests on the show,
- 1:42Speaker 10: which you, I guess, introduce yourselves. And if you'd like
- 1:45Speaker 10: to plug that reason that brought you here last time,
- 1:48Speaker 10: you can also do that.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 1:49Speaker 4: The last time we were here was because we played
- 1:53Speaker 4: and we rewrote an original score and played it live
- 1:57Speaker 4: to a silent movie.
- 1:59Speaker 10: Which was The Fall of the House of Usher.
- 2:01Speaker 4: And it was awesome.
- 2:02Speaker 10: I remember that night.
- 2:03Speaker 4: It was totally great. Everyone loved us. And the name
- 2:08Speaker 4: of our band is Bermudan, but that's not really important.
- 2:11Speaker 4: The music was important.
- 2:12Speaker 6: Yeah, unless you go to our band camp page. And
- 2:15Speaker 6: buy one of the songs, which wouldn't even know what
- 2:17Speaker 6: the name is. We have made 50 cents.
- 2:19Speaker 4: Yeah, we have made 50 cents.
- 2:21Speaker 6: Yes.
- 2:22Speaker 4: No, I thought it was make $ 2, because I think
- 2:24Speaker 4: my mom bought it.
- 2:25Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 2:25Speaker 4: And then Justin bought it.
- 2:26Speaker 6: I mean, after taxes.
- 2:27Speaker 10: And then all of the fans listening to this show.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:31Speaker 6: That's true.
- 2:31Speaker 10: Hint, hint. Come on, get on it, people.
- 2:33Speaker 4: Yeah, if you haven't been able to tell, I'm Jacqueline.
- 2:36Speaker 6: Oh, yeah, I'm Nick.
- 2:37Speaker 4: Yeah. The only other two people here besides Brian.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:41Speaker 10: Hopefully by now they're familiar with me. So we are
- 2:44Speaker 10: back to build another Frankenstein-like soundtrack. And usually we just
- 2:48Speaker 10: slap pieces together and make our own general soundtrack. But
- 2:52Speaker 10: this time, because this year is the 30th anniversary of
- 2:57Speaker 10: Purple Rain as a film and soundtrack, we've already discussed
- 3:02Speaker 10: the film at great length and probably very offensively for
- 3:05Speaker 10: many people. Several years ago, on the previous big anniversary,
- 3:10Speaker 10: frighteningly enough, that we've been doing the show that long,
- 3:13Speaker 10: But I figured on this time we would come around
- 3:15Speaker 10: and do a focus on the soundtrack. And it seemed
- 3:19Speaker 10: kind of ridiculous to play the songs from the soundtrack
- 3:23Speaker 10: since we're doing one soundtrack. Couldn't you just sit at
- 3:25Speaker 10: home and listen to the soundtrack?
- 3:27Speaker 4: And you probably heard all that already.
- 3:28Speaker 10: And you probably already heard that already. So I was like,
- 3:30Speaker 10: what's a cool way to go about it? Or at
- 3:32Speaker 10: least dig up something interesting along the way. So I
- 3:35Speaker 10: was like, okay, it's a big enough soundtrack that I'm
- 3:38Speaker 10: guessing I can probably find covers of all these different songs.
- 3:42Speaker 10: Most of which I found multiple covers of, which may
- 3:44Speaker 10: end up spilling over into an entire volume two of
- 3:47Speaker 10: this idea. But anyway, this has been an ongoing project
- 3:51Speaker 10: for this whole year is talking to people about Prince
- 3:54Speaker 10: and finding weird songs. So let's just kick it off.
- 3:58Speaker 10: What I've usually been asking everybody is what was their
- 4:00Speaker 10: introduction to Prince? With or without the Purple Rain, where
- 4:03Speaker 10: did you first experience Prince?
- 4:08Speaker 4: I guess my first experience was with my dad.
- 4:12Speaker 10: That's weird. It is pretty weird. It's not Darling Nikki,
- 4:18Speaker 10: is it? Thank God it.
- 4:19Speaker 4: Wasn't Darling Nikki. But no. Yeah, he was playing Prince
- 4:26Speaker 4: in his sad apartment that I loved because it had
- 4:30Speaker 4: a pool.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Nice.
- 4:33Speaker 4: Yeah, he just played Prince and Radiohead and The Beatles
- 4:36Speaker 4: for me. all through the late 90s.
- 4:39Speaker 10: And this is what warped your young mind.
- 4:42Speaker 11: Yes.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Interesting.
- 4:44Speaker 6: I probably, the first time I probably heard about Prince,
- 4:48Speaker 6: Prince was in the Animaniacs episode.
- 4:51Speaker 8: Nice.
- 4:51Speaker 10: I think I remember that one.
- 4:53Speaker 6: So the reference was lost on me at the time.
- 4:56Speaker 6: They're just holding this guy with, you know, in purple
- 5:00Speaker 6: clothes and curly hair. But yeah, I first actually heard
- 5:04Speaker 6: his music probably a few years ago. when I was
- 5:07Speaker 6: going through this quest of musical archaeology, just trying to
- 5:11Speaker 6: find all the, you know, because he was hailed as
- 5:14Speaker 6: this genius, this little short genius man.
- 5:17Speaker 10: Rightfully so.
- 5:18Speaker 6: Who could dance. Yeah, and that appealed to me. So
- 5:23Speaker 6: I hunted him down.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Not literally.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Oh, my God.
- 5:25Speaker 10: But he does live in Minneapolis. You broke into the
- 5:28Speaker 10: compound in Minneapolis?
- 5:30Speaker 6: Yeah, in the compound.
- 5:31Speaker 10: I hear he makes great omelets.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:34Speaker 10: If you can get him the next morning to make
- 5:36Speaker 10: you an omelet.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Yes.
- 5:37Speaker 10: After you break into the compound.
- 5:39Speaker 11: Yes.
- 5:39Speaker 6: I feel like if you wake up in the morning
- 5:44Speaker 6: in the same mansion as Prince, that there'll be, like,
- 5:46Speaker 6: a number.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Like, there'll be a piece.
- 5:47Speaker 6: He would write a note.
- 5:49Speaker 4: I think I would call the cops. I'd be like, what?
- 5:52Speaker 1: Where am I?
- 5:54Speaker 10: Come down to my room. It's the 37th on the right.
- 5:59Speaker 6: Watch out for that tiger.
- 6:01Speaker 10: This is Michael. Prince doesn't have time for wild animals.
- 6:06Speaker 10: He's focusing on all his random chicks. He has to
- 6:08Speaker 10: sue everyone. And suing people.
- 6:10Speaker 6: And then make music videos and just keep them in
- 6:13Speaker 6: his little vault and not show them.
- 6:16Speaker 10: Well, that's what I think is amazing, too. I don't
- 6:18Speaker 10: know how well you know about his accumulating of music.
- 6:23Speaker 10: For years there, once he set up the whole Paisley
- 6:28Speaker 10: Studios there, it was just like, he was constantly, like,
- 6:32Speaker 10: then he had grounds to do whatever, I mean, he
- 6:34Speaker 10: always did that, even on his old albums, like, he
- 6:35Speaker 10: would write, produce, perform everything on the album, but, like,
- 6:39Speaker 10: then he had his own studio to do it, so
- 6:41Speaker 10: he just started, like, recording songs, and he had, like,
- 6:44Speaker 10: at one point, like, there was a bank of, like,
- 6:47Speaker 10: 400 songs that had never been heard by anyone else
- 6:51Speaker 10: that was just sitting in his vault that he had written, and, like,
- 6:55Speaker 10: I think he made use of later, like once he
- 6:57Speaker 10: got into the weird slave era where his recording company
- 7:00Speaker 10: was kind of screwing him over, according to him, that
- 7:02Speaker 10: he didn't want to record anything else with them, that
- 7:05Speaker 10: I think he just started pulling stuff out of the
- 7:06Speaker 10: vault for several albums of like, okay, I don't really
- 7:09Speaker 10: have to do anything. Check this out. So yeah, he's
- 7:13Speaker 10: a peculiar man, but genius nonetheless.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:17Speaker 10: So you should start writing 400 songs and bank them
- 7:20Speaker 10: and hide them at your house somewhere.
- 7:22Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 7:22Speaker 4: Those are totally going to be valuable.
- 7:26Speaker 10: All right, I think we should kick it off. The
- 7:29Speaker 10: best version I could find, probably the most fun way,
- 7:31Speaker 10: because I figure we'll still kind of go in the
- 7:34Speaker 10: order of the soundtrack. So the Riverboat Gamblers did a
- 7:39Speaker 10: version of Let's Go Crazy on the... And this ties
- 7:42Speaker 10: into our previous talking about the movie was on the
- 7:46Speaker 10: 25th anniversary. And Spin Magazine did their own, like, basically
- 7:50Speaker 10: the same idea. They actually got people to do covers
- 7:53Speaker 10: of every song on the album. So I do like
- 7:57Speaker 10: a lot of them that were on that. If you
- 7:59Speaker 10: can find it out there, it's an awesome album. Go
- 8:01Speaker 10: find it. Again, I don't know how you go about
- 8:03Speaker 10: it officially now because if you bought the magazine at
- 8:07Speaker 10: that time, it was a free download. So I'm assuming
- 8:09Speaker 10: it's still free out there in the internets. But that's
- 8:12Speaker 10: between you and Spin Magazine. Everything's on the internet. I
- 8:14Speaker 10: don't know anything about that. But if you can come
- 8:16Speaker 10: across it, however, it is really cool. And several of
- 8:19Speaker 10: them we're going to work in today. So the first
- 8:21Speaker 10: of which, Riverboat Gamblerz. Dearly beloved, we.
- 8:26Speaker 12: Are gathered here today to get through this thing called life.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Electric word life.
- 8:34Speaker 9: It means forever.
- 8:35Speaker 3: That's a mighty long time, but I'm here to tell
- 8:37Speaker 3: you there's something else.
- 8:40Speaker 12: The afterworld.
- 8:44Speaker 3: World of never-ending.
- 8:45Speaker 4: Happiness You can always see the sun, day or.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Night So when you call up that shrink.
- 8:51Speaker 1: In Beverly Hills You.
- 8:52Speaker 12: Know the one doctor, everything will be alright Instead of
- 8:55Speaker 12: asking him how much of your time is left Ask
- 8:58Speaker 12: him how much of your mind, baby Cause in this life,
- 9:02Speaker 12: things are much harder than in the afterworld In this life,
- 9:06Speaker 12: you're on your own And if the elevator tiles are
- 9:10Speaker 12: written down Go crazy!
- 9:15Speaker 3: If you don't like.
- 9:26Speaker 12: The world you're living.
- 9:29Speaker 1: In Take.
- 9:31Speaker 10: A look around you, at.
- 9:32Speaker 3: Least you got friends.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Call my old.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Lady for a friendly word.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Pick up the phone, drop it on the floor, and then.
- 9:43Speaker 3: Oh, oh, it's all I heard.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Are we gonna let the elevator bring us down?
- 9:49Speaker 5: Oh no, let's go!
- 9:50Speaker 1: Let's get crazy. Let's get nuts.
- 9:52Speaker 12: Let's look for a purple banana till they put us
- 9:57Speaker 12: on the truck.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Let's go!
- 9:58Speaker 1: We're all excited.
- 10:11Speaker 3: We don't know why.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Maybe it's cause we're all gonna die. When we do
- 10:20Speaker 1: What's it all for Better live now.
- 10:23Speaker 12: For the great river Comes knocking at your door Tell.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Me, are we gonna Let the elevator break us down
- 10:32Speaker 1: Oh no, let's.
- 10:33Speaker 3: Go Let's go crazy Let's.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Get nuts Let's look for the bubble But let us
- 10:41Speaker 1: do this Put us on the truck Let's.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Go Come on baby Let's get nuts Are we.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Gonna let the enemy break us down? Oh no, let's go!
- 11:16Speaker 3: Let's go crazy Let's go!
- 11:18Speaker 1: Let's go!
- 11:19Speaker 3: Let's go crazy!
- 11:21Speaker 1: Let's go! Let's go!
- 11:24Speaker 2: Let's go!
- 11:26Speaker 1: Let's go! Let's go! Let's go! Woo!
- 12:10Speaker 7: When I was in sixth grade, all the little kids
- 12:12Speaker 7: said if they wanted.
- 12:14Speaker 3: To have sex with Betty or Apollonia, and they said,
- 12:16Speaker 3: which one?
- 12:16Speaker 12: And I said, when I grow up, I'm going to
- 12:20Speaker 12: have sex with them both at.
- 12:24Speaker 1: The same time. Take me away! Take me away!
- 12:31Speaker 12: Take me away!
- 12:32Speaker 5: Yeah!
- 12:32Speaker 6: This is when the fog, the fog machines are in
- 12:34Speaker 6: full go.
- 12:35Speaker 10: The exits to the fog. Then 12 people come lift
- 12:38Speaker 10: him up and carry him off stage. I only assume.
- 12:41Speaker 10: I do really think that's a fun wrap up, mostly
- 12:44Speaker 10: because it fits so well with that whole style. And again,
- 12:49Speaker 10: the mythology of Prince of the everybody in sixth grade
- 12:53Speaker 10: still deciding, you know, which of his random chicks that
- 12:56Speaker 10: he hung out with was the hottest. So that was
- 12:59Speaker 10: a weird mythology, too, is how many girls he was
- 13:01Speaker 10: connected to in the music industry for years and still
- 13:04Speaker 10: kind of is.
- 13:05Speaker 6: Carmen Electra.
- 13:07Speaker 10: Sheila E. We can do the whole list here. I mean,
- 13:10Speaker 10: there's a ton of girls he was sort of semi
- 13:14Speaker 10: unofficially connected to. So I thought that was a fun
- 13:18Speaker 10: little wrap up.
- 13:18Speaker 6: I wonder how many are still in the vault.
- 13:21Speaker 10: Maybe that's what he's using the vault for now. He
- 13:24Speaker 10: busted those songs out and then you're like, I got
- 13:26Speaker 10: room for some more. No, you stay. You stay right there.
- 13:29Speaker 6: My favorite thing about the wrap up of that song
- 13:33Speaker 6: is that the narrator is is presented with a false dilemma.
- 13:37Speaker 6: He's like, do you want to have sex with her
- 13:39Speaker 6: or her? And he's like, nah, I don't have to choose.
- 13:42Speaker 6: I'll take both.
- 13:44Speaker 10: It's pretty cocky for a sixth grader. It also has
- 13:49Speaker 10: quite a, again, to tie into the movie, quite a
- 13:53Speaker 10: Morris Day feel to it. It very much falls closer
- 13:57Speaker 10: to that band. which I guess we won't officially cross
- 14:01Speaker 10: over into. Since it's not on the soundtrack, we were
- 14:04Speaker 10: discussing earlier how everybody else gets to be featured in
- 14:07Speaker 10: the movie, but when he puts together the official soundtrack, it's, oh,
- 14:11Speaker 10: by the way, here's all my awesome songs. But, I mean, really,
- 14:15Speaker 10: nobody wants to put Sex Shooter on there, so it's okay.
- 14:18Speaker 10: We're not missing anything with that one. But the Morris
- 14:20Speaker 10: Day stuff's pretty awesome. I did see him earlier this year.
- 14:25Speaker 10: He's badass. Congratulations. He's still badass. He has not gotten
- 14:29Speaker 10: back to me. I was going to ask him to
- 14:31Speaker 10: come talk about it. So if Morris is out there
- 14:33Speaker 10: and he wants to come on the show, feel free.
- 14:36Speaker 10: So with that one, I was going to go into
- 14:38Speaker 10: the guitar work. Being a guitar type person, what are
- 14:43Speaker 10: your thoughts on Prince's guitar work? Well, he.
- 14:48Speaker 6: Was very.
- 14:51Speaker 6: Like in my head right now, I'm hearing all the
- 14:52Speaker 6: kind of distorted leads.
- 14:53Speaker 10: He was very capable.
- 14:58Speaker 6: I have to say, as a guitar player. You know,
- 15:02Speaker 6: kind of in the school, the tradition of blues-influenced guitar playing,
- 15:06Speaker 6: kind of like Hendrix when he would go on those
- 15:08Speaker 6: little runs. But yeah, I mean, I don't think I
- 15:14Speaker 6: could praise him for his guitar playing more so than
- 15:17Speaker 6: all the other stuff that he did.
- 15:20Speaker 10: And continues to do. He's not dead or anything. This
- 15:24Speaker 10: isn't like a retrospective. That's true. Post-mortem. That's true.
- 15:29Speaker 6: He is embalmed already.
- 15:31Speaker 10: Daddy might be, because he refuses to age.
- 15:33Speaker 6: I know.
- 15:34Speaker 10: Boy looks damn good.
- 15:35Speaker 6: I saw him interviewed on Travis Smiley a few years ago,
- 15:44Speaker 6: and he was just talking about chemtrails.
- 15:48Speaker 10: Interesting.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:50Speaker 3: God, friends, you're so weird.
- 15:51Speaker 6: He is completely.
- 15:53Speaker 2: He is walled off.
- 15:54Speaker 6: He is like, I don't want my music on YouTube.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 15:57Speaker 6: Hey, Warner Brothers, Illuminati. Like, you know, if I see
- 16:00Speaker 6: your lizard eyes.
- 16:01Speaker 4: He's an animaniac, though.
- 16:05Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 16:05Speaker 10: Yeah, he's in his own little world. But, again, he
- 16:09Speaker 10: puts together some impressive stuff.
- 16:11Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 16:12Speaker 10: So, I guess next we roll into Take Me With You,
- 16:15Speaker 10: which there are a few different versions of that out there.
- 16:18Speaker 10: But I went with, what is it? A different way
- 16:21Speaker 10: than I expected finding different ones. This one is Marshall Crenshaw.
- 16:34Speaker 7: I can't disguise the pounding of my heart It beats
- 16:38Speaker 7: so strong.
- 16:42Speaker 3: It's in your eyes What can I say? They turn
- 16:46Speaker 3: me on.
- 16:50Speaker 1: I don't care where we go Don't care what we
- 16:58Speaker 1: do I don't care pretty baby Just take me with
- 17:03Speaker 1: you Come on and touch the place in me That's.
- 17:10Speaker 10: Calling out your name We.
- 17:11Speaker 11: Want each other oh so much Why must we play this.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Game I don't care where we go Don't care what
- 17:27Speaker 1: we do I don't care pretty baby Just take me
- 17:30Speaker 1: with you Come on, take me with you.
- 17:33Speaker 3: I don't care if we spend the.
- 17:35Speaker 1: Night at the mansion I don't care if we spend
- 17:42Speaker 1: the night at the mansion I don't care if we
- 17:51Speaker 1: spend the night on the town Cause all I want
- 18:00Speaker 1: is to spend the night together All I want.
- 18:07Speaker 3: Is to spend the night.
- 18:17Speaker 10: To be around.
- 18:18Speaker 1: You is oh so right You're sheer perfection.
- 18:25Speaker 3: Drive me crazy, drive me all night Just don't break
- 18:30Speaker 3: the connection.
- 18:32Speaker 1: I don't care where we go I don't care what
- 18:38Speaker 1: we do I don't care pretty baby, just take me
- 18:46Speaker 1: with you. I don't care where we go, don't care
- 18:51Speaker 1: what we do. I don't care pretty baby, just take
- 19:03Speaker 1: me with you. Take me with you. Honey, take me
- 19:09Speaker 1: with you Take me home, home, home Take me home
- 19:22Speaker 1: Take me home, home, home Take me home.
- 19:36Speaker 13: I want to spend the night.
- 19:42Speaker 4: At somebody's mansion.
- 19:44Speaker 6: There are so many mansion references in the Prince Ouvre.
- 19:50Speaker 10: We might need to address the mansions.
- 19:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:54Speaker 2: How many people do you.
- 19:55Speaker 3: Know with mansions?
- 19:56Speaker 6: I think he was in, I mean, he's living in
- 19:58Speaker 6: that bubble.
- 20:00Speaker 10: That was early, though. That's what's funny is that he's
- 20:02Speaker 10: already writing in that because, I mean, this was written,
- 20:05Speaker 10: I mean, I guess the biggest thing he'd had, the
- 20:08Speaker 10: biggest break would be, like, That was post-1999, so he
- 20:12Speaker 10: had Little Red Corvette. He'd gotten a good amount. Before that,
- 20:15Speaker 10: none of his albums really had financing, so he really
- 20:18Speaker 10: shouldn't have been at the mansion stage yet.
- 20:20Speaker 4: But he was dating so many ladies with mansions that
- 20:25Speaker 4: he didn't care if they spent the night at the mansion.
- 20:29Speaker 4: He could care less. He's like, whatever, it's just a mansion.
- 20:31Speaker 6: Yeah, when you get to that level, mansions are like tissues.
- 20:34Speaker 10: It's just like, eh.
- 20:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:39Speaker 6: You have your eyes set on the secret space program.
- 20:43Speaker 6: You're like, I want to go to Mars.
- 20:45Speaker 10: And they go to Mars.
- 20:46Speaker 6: So mansions to them are just nothing.
- 20:49Speaker 10: You are really working in the weird Illuminati crazy version.
- 20:55Speaker 6: I'm trying to speak for his representative today.
- 21:00Speaker 10: We here at Movie Meltdown take no responsibility for... things
- 21:04Speaker 10: said or other.
- 21:06Speaker 4: Or definitely didn't.
- 21:07Speaker 10: Say opinions that may be NSA don't yeah see I
- 21:13Speaker 10: think that's probably the improvement on this cover is no
- 21:17Speaker 10: offense she seems like a very nice lady Apollonia is
- 21:21Speaker 10: not I don't know her her vocals specifically on that
- 21:25Speaker 10: track kind of leave a little something to be desired
- 21:28Speaker 10: that That's possibly the weakest point on that album, in
- 21:30Speaker 10: my opinion, is Take Me With You. And a lot
- 21:33Speaker 10: of it is that weird duet portion where Apollonia throws
- 21:37Speaker 10: out some weird notes. I mean, Prince is always perfect.
- 21:41Speaker 6: No, she sounds like a shampoo.
- 21:43Speaker 10: Well, I mean, if you want somebody that's gone kind
- 21:44Speaker 10: of crazy, she went super religious from what I hear.
- 21:48Speaker 4: So he went conspiracy nut and she went ultra religious.
- 21:53Speaker 6: Prince, super conspiratorial nut. Very sexual man. admittedly, Jehovah's Witness.
- 22:03Speaker 10: Well, that's what I always thought was weird is like
- 22:05Speaker 10: 98% of his songs are like sex, sex, sex. And
- 22:09Speaker 10: then there's this little handful over here that are all
- 22:11Speaker 10: about God. I'm just like, okay. I mean, they're still
- 22:14Speaker 10: really well written, so I don't even hate the weird
- 22:17Speaker 10: religiousy ones, but I'm just like, that's such a weird mixture.
- 22:20Speaker 6: He's a complicated man.
- 22:21Speaker 10: That he is.
- 22:22Speaker 4: As long as you confess.
- 22:23Speaker 10: That's true.
- 22:24Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 22:25Speaker 6: Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned.
- 22:26Speaker 3: I have cheated on my husband.
- 22:29Speaker 10: Do you think God will ever forgive me?
- 22:32Speaker 1: Oh, yes.
- 22:46Speaker 7: I'm Dee Snider from Twisted Sister, writer, star of Strangeland, radio, TV,
- 22:52Speaker 7: you know me.
- 22:53Speaker 3: And you're listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 22:56Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 22:56Speaker 1: I'm burning hell. I'm burning hell.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Want some music for your ears? Doo-Wop Shop makes it
- 23:16Speaker 2: easy to rent for any event, business meeting, or special occasion.
- 23:20Speaker 2: From PA systems to karaoke machines to just about anything
- 23:23Speaker 2: that makes noise, you can rent it from the Doo-Wop Shop.
- 23:26Speaker 2: In Louisville, find them either at their Highland Store at
- 23:28Speaker 2: 1587 Bardstown Road or in the East End at 2915
- 23:32Speaker 2: South Hurstburn Parkway. And look for them online at DooWopShop.com.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Doo-Wop Shop. We're serious about music.
- 23:41Speaker 10: So, moving into the next one here. This is an
- 23:45Speaker 10: interesting song to try to cover, I would think, because
- 23:48Speaker 10: it's probably the most passionate in its own weird, disturbing way.
- 23:53Speaker 10: And it's played up very much on stage, in the movie,
- 23:58Speaker 10: and it comes through on the song itself. So, the
- 24:02Speaker 10: beautiful ones, it seems like would be a hard one
- 24:04Speaker 10: to do out of context.
- 24:06Speaker 1: And then.
- 24:07Speaker 10: Again, most of the rest of these bands that are
- 24:09Speaker 10: going to be on this soundtrack that we're doing are
- 24:11Speaker 10: lesser known. This was the one I thought I'd throw
- 24:14Speaker 10: in probably the most mainstream or one of the two
- 24:17Speaker 10: most mainstream people that I've found that have covered anything
- 24:20Speaker 10: by Prince. Mariah Carey is about as mainstream as you
- 24:25Speaker 10: can get. And she does a version and again does
- 24:29Speaker 10: a duet on this one with Drew Hill. I don't know.
- 24:33Speaker 10: I thought just to mix things up, I'd throw in
- 24:35Speaker 10: probably the biggest known star on this rundown.
- 25:05Speaker 3: What's it gonna be?
- 25:07Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 25:12Speaker 3: Oh, baby, baby, baby.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 25:18Speaker 3: Is it him or is it me?
- 25:23Speaker 1: Oh, don't make me waste my time. Baby, baby, baby.
- 25:52Speaker 5: Can't you stay with me tonight.
- 25:59Speaker 3: Baby, baby.
- 26:07Speaker 9: Don't let kisses believe you're right.
- 26:14Speaker 1: You will survive to find.
- 26:21Speaker 9: The beautiful one, baby, she went.
- 26:33Speaker 6: Yeah, take a fucking picture, baby.
- 26:36Speaker 1: Me, yeah. And bring to life the visions of time.
- 26:44Speaker 3: Beautiful, beautiful.
- 26:49Speaker 12: We always smash the picture.
- 26:53Speaker 3: Yeah, always, baby.
- 26:57Speaker 1: Every time. If I told you baby Oh, so cool,
- 27:41Speaker 1: so cool, so cool. I got one thing to say
- 28:47Speaker 1: I want you. See, I may not know what I'm going.
- 29:18Speaker 13: With, baby.
- 29:18Speaker 3: I may not know.
- 29:20Speaker 1: I may not know. See, I may not know what
- 29:23Speaker 1: I need. What I need. What I need. What I need.
- 29:29Speaker 1: What I need. But one thing. One thing.
- 29:33Speaker 5: One thing.
- 29:34Speaker 3: But it may be.
- 29:36Speaker 1: I know what I want. And that's to please you. baby,
- 29:40Speaker 1: please you, baby And I'll be back again on my
- 29:46Speaker 1: Mondays I want you still, I want you Ooh, ooh,
- 29:52Speaker 1: ooh Ooh, ooh, ooh Oh, I know I'm so bad Oh, baby, baby,
- 30:14Speaker 1: baby Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 30:22Speaker 1: yeah He wants his girl He wanna love me, love
- 30:29Speaker 1: me He wanna.
- 30:31Speaker 3: Throw me away.
- 30:33Speaker 1: I gotta know, I gotta know, baby Gotta know, baby, baby, baby.
- 31:03Speaker 10: It's actually a pretty good version. It's just to me,
- 31:05Speaker 10: it's even more slowed down and I don't know. I mean,
- 31:08Speaker 10: it's not boring, but it's just not, she doesn't add
- 31:12Speaker 10: anything extra to it. It's just sort of doing a
- 31:14Speaker 10: cover in the most basic way of doing a cover.
- 31:17Speaker 10: They have a decent little chemistry together, but yeah, I
- 31:22Speaker 10: don't know.
- 31:23Speaker 4: Yeah, doing a cover is supposed to be putting your
- 31:25Speaker 4: own spin on it.
- 31:26Speaker 10: For some people, not everyone.
- 31:28Speaker 4: I don't like the other covers. I don't like covers
- 31:31Speaker 4: that are supposed to be exact replicas.
- 31:33Speaker 6: Yeah, that's kind of self-indulgent. It's just like, I wish
- 31:36Speaker 6: I wrote this song, so I'm going to play it
- 31:37Speaker 6: exactly the.
- 31:38Speaker 2: Way it is.
- 31:40Speaker 10: Unless you're one of those cool cover bands, like the
- 31:43Speaker 10: Purple Rain.
- 31:43Speaker 5: Uh-huh.
- 31:45Speaker 10: Have you seen the Purple Ring? I've seen them on
- 31:48Speaker 10: the TVs. They are pretty impressive. They have taken to
- 31:51Speaker 10: doing nothing but recreating the Prince experience.
- 31:55Speaker 4: It's like they should play the Mercury Ballroom.
- 31:57Speaker 10: They really should. Like all the other cover bands. If
- 32:01Speaker 10: they'd like to sponsor us, feel free. We'll run some
- 32:04Speaker 10: ads for their cover bands.
- 32:07Speaker 6: Mariah Carey does contribute the Boiling Kettle is Ready sound.
- 32:15Speaker 6: to the song that it needed?
- 32:17Speaker 10: You mean those dog notes she hits?
- 32:18Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 32:19Speaker 10: I've always sort of described her as that. And the
- 32:21Speaker 10: thing is, I don't think she's bad. I think she
- 32:23Speaker 10: really is talented. She has an amazing voice, but she
- 32:27Speaker 10: does that like that became her gimmick. I think the
- 32:30Speaker 10: first album of hers is actually pretty good. I think
- 32:32Speaker 10: she's gotten more watered down and generic as time's gone on.
- 32:36Speaker 10: That first album's pretty solid, but even then it was like,
- 32:39Speaker 10: my thing is this note that only dogs can hear.
- 32:43Speaker 10: And I'm going to work it in as much as
- 32:45Speaker 10: possible because it's the one thing I can do that
- 32:47Speaker 10: all these other little pop diva girls can't do. So
- 32:50Speaker 10: she kind of banked on that. But she's still got
- 32:53Speaker 10: a good voice. And likes to, what's her activity now?
- 32:57Speaker 5: Oh.
- 32:58Speaker 10: Have babies, I believe is what you said. She likes
- 33:02Speaker 10: cranking out kids.
- 33:03Speaker 4: That's why the beautiful ones, baby, baby, baby.
- 33:06Speaker 10: She's just naming them as they're coming out. Another baby,
- 33:08Speaker 10: another baby, couple of twins, whatever. That's how Nick Cannon
- 33:13Speaker 10: likes it. Who marries Nick Cannon? What the hell is
- 33:17Speaker 10: she thinking?
- 33:18Speaker 4: Man, I'm not big on, I don't know like pop
- 33:19Speaker 4: culture a whole lot. I didn't even know she was
- 33:21Speaker 4: married to Nick Cannon.
- 33:22Speaker 10: Yep. Sadly for her.
- 33:24Speaker 6: Wow.
- 33:24Speaker 5: Yes.
- 33:25Speaker 1: Yes. All right.
- 33:27Speaker 10: So I think at this point, based on a comment
- 33:29Speaker 10: you made earlier, we might disagree on this one. Cause
- 33:33Speaker 10: I was always, I mean, again, again, this album is
- 33:35Speaker 10: built on nothing but hits. Like it knocked out tons
- 33:38Speaker 10: of like huge hits for him. But to me, I
- 33:41Speaker 10: always thought the, the hidden gem, the one that nobody
- 33:44Speaker 10: paid attention to was computer blue and was one of
- 33:48Speaker 10: my favorite tracks on the album. And the one that
- 33:50Speaker 10: nobody ever cared about. So I don't know. I think
- 33:54Speaker 10: it's pretty amazing. It, Has a weird tie-in to the
- 33:57Speaker 10: movie that only makes sense if you watch the movie.
- 34:00Speaker 10: But I don't know. To me, it's one of the
- 34:02Speaker 10: more impressive ones musically. It kind of lets him shine
- 34:05Speaker 10: as the guitarist that he is in certain moments. And
- 34:08Speaker 10: it does that weird thing where it veers off and
- 34:10Speaker 10: does an entire different song.
- 34:12Speaker 14: At the end.
- 34:12Speaker 4: Yeah, and there's a 100% different song at the end.
- 34:15Speaker 10: Yeah. And I kind of liked that. It was like
- 34:18Speaker 10: when I was a kid listening to this album, which
- 34:20Speaker 10: I did way too much probably. I remember that kind
- 34:23Speaker 10: of messing with my mind. I was like, wait, are
- 34:25Speaker 10: we still on the same track? And I had to
- 34:28Speaker 10: find the tape. No, it hasn't changed. I don't know.
- 34:32Speaker 10: It was confusing in a way that I think was
- 34:34Speaker 10: expanding my horizons. Prince expands horizons.
- 34:38Speaker 6: He force fed you LSD through your ears.
- 34:40Speaker 4: It has some interesting minor key moments and such like that.
- 34:44Speaker 4: It just doesn't tickle my fancy as much as some
- 34:46Speaker 4: other songs on the album.
- 34:47Speaker 6: That little movement change, for lack of a better word.
- 34:51Speaker 6: After he recorded the song, here's what I'm imagining. He
- 34:53Speaker 6: records a song, he plays it for people who had
- 34:56Speaker 6: no part in the creation of it, so they don't
- 34:57Speaker 6: know what was going on. And then when that moment happens,
- 35:00Speaker 6: he's looking at them. And then a small grin appears.
- 35:07Speaker 6: I think that's the process.
- 35:09Speaker 10: The really scary thing that you guys listening at home
- 35:11Speaker 10: just don't experience is that he just did the prince
- 35:14Speaker 10: looking at him face. It was pretty accurate. It's kind
- 35:18Speaker 10: of frightening, actually.
- 35:19Speaker 4: He's got those dead eyes like Prince.
- 35:21Speaker 6: Like a doll's eyes.
- 35:24Speaker 10: They roll back in his head when he bites down. Oh, wait. Prince,
- 35:29Speaker 10: he might.
- 35:29Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 35:30Speaker 10: Strange dude.
- 35:44Speaker 1: Where is my love life?
- 35:47Speaker 3: What can it be? There must be something wrong with
- 35:52Speaker 3: the machine. Where is my life like?
- 35:54Speaker 1: Tell me, what happened? Somebody please tell me what the
- 36:00Speaker 1: hell is.
- 36:03Speaker 13: Wrong.
- 36:05Speaker 1: To find.
- 36:10Speaker 3: My righteous one, computer blue.
- 36:16Speaker 14: Till I find my righteous one, computer blue.
- 37:49Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 38:31Speaker 10: Yeah, that was Of Montreal. Pretty much the only, that's
- 38:35Speaker 10: one of the ones that was hard to find other
- 38:37Speaker 10: covers of. That one came off that Purple Rain album
- 38:40Speaker 10: that's been put out, and that's one of the few
- 38:42Speaker 10: that hasn't had a million studio versions done. You can
- 38:46Speaker 10: occasionally find some live ones, but that's the one, again,
- 38:48Speaker 10: they've forgotten track that nobody covers over and over and
- 38:51Speaker 10: over again. Unlike the next one. When I started talking
- 38:56Speaker 10: to people this past year about, you know, let's talk
- 38:59Speaker 10: about this album. Let's talk about your favorite song. The, like,
- 39:02Speaker 10: knee-jerk reaction. Everybody immediately goes to Darling Nikki. That's all
- 39:07Speaker 10: anybody wants to talk about.
- 39:09Speaker 4: That's what they play in Waffle House.
- 39:11Speaker 10: Strip clubs. I mean, obviously. It's just funny. And again,
- 39:16Speaker 10: I think it's that kid thing. I think when everybody
- 39:18Speaker 10: was at those formative years when this thing hit and
- 39:22Speaker 10: like it was all over TV and you watched it
- 39:25Speaker 10: on cable it was probably the raciest thing you'd ever
- 39:28Speaker 10: seen when you're a little kid. So it's just like,
- 39:30Speaker 10: it's grinding on stage is probably the weirdest thing you'd
- 39:32Speaker 10: ever seen as a kid watching this, uh, listening to it.
- 39:35Speaker 10: They say what in your mind is probably bad words.
- 39:38Speaker 11: Yep.
- 39:39Speaker 10: So, I mean, you're not really sure how to process
- 39:41Speaker 10: it probably if you're hearing it when you're a kid.
- 39:44Speaker 10: And I think a lot of people did hear it
- 39:47Speaker 10: really young and we're just like this again, Expanding Horizons.
- 39:51Speaker 10: This one took you in a weird direction that you
- 39:53Speaker 10: were not prepared for when you were a youngster.
- 39:55Speaker 4: A lot of kids asking difficult questions to their parents.
- 39:58Speaker 10: Mom, how do you use a magazine?
- 40:02Speaker 6: Is it normal to have to sign a contract before
- 40:05Speaker 6: you have sex?
- 40:07Speaker 10: Wait, that's not... Oh, never mind. There goes my weekend.
- 40:12Speaker 10: So of all the versions, and there were several out there,
- 40:15Speaker 10: but this one.
- 40:18Speaker 10: This one is very strange, and it takes a while
- 40:20Speaker 10: to get going, but I swear if you hang in there,
- 40:24Speaker 10: it's possibly the most perfect Darling Nikki cover ever. This
- 40:28Speaker 10: is Steven Bernstein. I believe he's known for his slide trumpet,
- 40:33Speaker 10: and he has played, he has weird little spinoff-like groups,
- 40:38Speaker 10: one of which is Sex Mob, the other is The
- 40:40Speaker 10: Hot Nine, so he's kind of big in his little world,
- 40:43Speaker 10: but yeah, it takes him a while to get into it,
- 40:46Speaker 10: but Once he gets going, it's a hell of a song.
- 41:20Speaker 1: So so so Thank you. Thank you. We'll be right back.
- 46:14Speaker 10: This is the perfect cover because I watched and like, again,
- 46:18Speaker 10: all the super celebrity people that try to be racy
- 46:21Speaker 10: still trying to tap into this thing from 30 years ago.
- 46:24Speaker 10: Because just recently you see Rihanna on stage doing her
- 46:27Speaker 10: version of it. And she's dressed like Madonna 20 years ago.
- 46:30Speaker 10: And she's doing this very like cut and dry standard.
- 46:34Speaker 10: Look at me. I'm trying to be sexy version of it.
- 46:36Speaker 10: And it's so boring. And then I got to this
- 46:39Speaker 10: and I was just like, oh, no. those are dirty,
- 46:41Speaker 10: dirty horns. Like this is the most, I believe the
- 46:45Speaker 10: word you used was porny. And I'm like, it is
- 46:48Speaker 10: such a porn soundtrack that I'm like, that is Darling Nikki.
- 46:52Speaker 10: This is the perfect version of how you should play
- 46:55Speaker 10: Darling Nikki.
- 46:55Speaker 4: Yeah, and everybody like nowadays when they're making a sex song,
- 46:58Speaker 4: they always use like analogies. They're using analogies for everything
- 47:00Speaker 4: where Prince is like masturbating.
- 47:03Speaker 10: To a magazine.
- 47:05Speaker 6: In the hotel lobby, by the way, exhibitionist.
- 47:09Speaker 10: She'll show you no mercy.
- 47:12Speaker 6: Yeah, that version was very sultry.
- 47:16Speaker 10: Yeah, see?
- 47:17Speaker 6: When I hear the horns with the little plunger thing
- 47:21Speaker 6: on them, ironically enough, it's sexy.
- 47:25Speaker 10: Oh, yeah, I like the plunger.
- 47:28Speaker 6: When I hear that, I just see the stockings falling
- 47:33Speaker 6: down legs.
- 47:34Speaker 10: I mean, is this not, like, the perfect strip song? Like,
- 47:37Speaker 10: especially that version of it.
- 47:39Speaker 4: The weird, like, old-timey sound is, like, this would be
- 47:42Speaker 4: a porn soundtrack for, like, a 1940 slapstick movie.
- 47:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:46Speaker 4: Like, that's what it sounds like.
- 47:47Speaker 10: It just sounds like the raciest part of the Vaudeville act.
- 47:51Speaker 1: I know, I know.
- 47:52Speaker 8: You're a woman who's been getting nothing but dirty brakes.
- 47:54Speaker 6: Well, we can clean and tighten your brakes, but you'll
- 47:56Speaker 6: have to stay in the garage all night.
- 47:57Speaker 10: I was not doing a ton of instrumentals. What's funny
- 48:00Speaker 10: is I found another one that was done by some
- 48:02Speaker 10: sort of It was still like a lot of horns
- 48:06Speaker 10: and it was done as like a pretty straightforward version
- 48:09Speaker 10: of it. And I'm like, it was terrible. And they
- 48:11Speaker 10: were trying to go for the same thing, but they
- 48:13Speaker 10: did it super straight, the most white version you could
- 48:17Speaker 10: do of it. And I'm just like, oh no.
- 48:19Speaker 9: No, no.
- 48:19Speaker 10: This is how you do that song. Like, yeah, this
- 48:22Speaker 10: is the only way to cover that song.
- 48:24Speaker 6: And the beginning of the song, you could even call
- 48:28Speaker 6: it foreplay.
- 48:30Speaker 4: Yeah, because it's building up for foreplay. More than the
- 48:34Speaker 4: actual act lasts, which is very good.
- 48:37Speaker 6: The song lasts about 30 seconds. When he gets into it,
- 48:40Speaker 6: it's over.
- 48:42Speaker 10: There's the payoff. Money shot, if you will. This is
- 48:48Speaker 10: something I was going to ask you guys, depending on
- 48:50Speaker 10: how familiar you are with the album, but again, messing
- 48:53Speaker 10: with people back in the day, as you come to
- 48:56Speaker 10: the end of the track on the actual Prince album,
- 49:00Speaker 10: Do you remember the weird little thing it does at
- 49:02Speaker 10: the end?
- 49:04Speaker 4: Yeah, that's another one where it sounds like it could
- 49:07Speaker 4: be a different song.
- 49:08Speaker 10: Well, it goes into the weird noises, and then he's talking,
- 49:13Speaker 10: but you can't really understand.
- 49:15Speaker 4: But he's very religious.
- 49:17Speaker 10: He's backmasking.
- 49:18Speaker 4: Uh-oh.
- 49:18Speaker 5: Uh-oh.
- 49:50Speaker 10: But again, like, it's one of those, like, of all
- 49:53Speaker 10: the people to do that, you wouldn't see Prince. And
- 49:56Speaker 10: then he does it in his own Prince way, of course. Now,
- 50:00Speaker 10: this was the point where I'm like, I don't know
- 50:02Speaker 10: if I get more geek points. I think I just
- 50:05Speaker 10: get them like vicariously because I didn't do this. But
- 50:08Speaker 10: this is how long ago it was. Again, this was
- 50:10Speaker 10: like years ago, well before the Internet had taken off.
- 50:14Speaker 10: And the there was a guy that I knew that.
- 50:19Speaker 10: He had, again, this I don't even think was him.
- 50:21Speaker 10: I think he had a friend who had a four track.
- 50:24Speaker 10: He took that, ran it backwards and recorded it onto
- 50:27Speaker 10: a tape so that people could actually hear what it
- 50:30Speaker 10: was that it was. The word of God, yes. Yeah,
- 50:32Speaker 10: what was going on there. So this was, yeah, now
- 50:36Speaker 10: that's relatively easy to do with the computer world, but
- 50:38Speaker 10: the fact that you had to find some weirdo in
- 50:41Speaker 10: a garage with a four-track to do this, I thought
- 50:43Speaker 10: was like extra levels of geeky.
- 50:44Speaker 4: Get another Prince Stare after you do that.
- 50:47Speaker 6: It was like you had to go to Lone Gunman.
- 50:51Speaker 10: They have to move their crazy publication out of the
- 50:54Speaker 10: way to go over here and start listening to what
- 50:56Speaker 10: secret messages are in all your music, which I think
- 50:59Speaker 10: we should play for them now.
- 51:02Speaker 1: Hello, how are you? Fine, fine, cause I know that
- 51:14Speaker 1: the Lord is coming through. Coming, coming to you.
- 51:34Speaker 10: Oh, God, I love Prince. He really is. He's a
- 51:37Speaker 10: crazy man.
- 51:38Speaker 6: He really is the antithesis to his feared Illuminati.
- 51:44Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 51:44Speaker 6: With the backmasking, instead of like, something like this, it's like, hey.
- 51:49Speaker 10: Well, I like that because that was also when it
- 51:51Speaker 10: was like knee deep in that. Like that's right in
- 51:54Speaker 10: the middle of probably like Judas Priest going on trial
- 51:57Speaker 10: and Ozzy getting in trouble for killing kids. And Prince
- 51:59Speaker 10: is like, oh, I'm going to put some backward stuff
- 52:01Speaker 10: on my record. Hello. Have a nice day. And God
- 52:07Speaker 10: loves you and shit like that.
- 52:08Speaker 4: But, you know, hey, hopefully this subliminal message will make
- 52:10Speaker 4: someone feel good.
- 52:12Speaker 10: Yeah, I kind of like that again, just because it's
- 52:14Speaker 10: so screw you guys. I'm going to do what I want. Again,
- 52:19Speaker 10: always just sort of maverick that he is. I'm going
- 52:22Speaker 10: to do what I want. I'm Prince, damn it.
- 52:28Speaker 3: My name is Prince, and I am funky.
- 52:31Speaker 1: My name is Prince, the one and only.
- 52:35Speaker 11: I did not come to funk around till I get
- 52:40Speaker 11: your daughter.
- 52:42Speaker 1: I won't leave this town.

- 53:37Speaker 2: Welcome to Movie Meltdown in a world of total darkness.
- 53:52Speaker 10: All right, so we've finished Side A. Flip the tape over.
- 53:55Speaker 3: Now....
- 53:57Speaker 10: Sorry, it was 1984. So now we get to... I
- 54:02Speaker 10: believe this was the biggest single off an album that
- 54:05Speaker 10: was already full of huge singles. I think of all
- 54:08Speaker 10: of them, When Doves Cry was the biggest hit, had
- 54:11Speaker 10: probably the most viewed music video. It was the single
- 54:16Speaker 10: for that whole album. And again, I did not think
- 54:19Speaker 10: this was the version I was going to go to
- 54:21Speaker 10: when I saw it listed there. I'm like, genuine, really?
- 54:26Speaker 10: I didn't get near as excited as somebody did.
- 54:28Speaker 6: I got excited.
- 54:30Speaker 4: 90s R & B?
- 54:31Speaker 10: Come on.
- 54:32Speaker 3: But that's the thing.
- 54:33Speaker 10: I thought it was going to go more boringly 90s
- 54:37Speaker 10: R & B traditional way. And then he gets into it,
- 54:39Speaker 10: and he's just kind of getting into it. He just
- 54:42Speaker 10: said 90s R & B is boring. A lot of it, yeah.
- 54:46Speaker 4: Yeah, you're right.
- 54:46Speaker 10: A lot of, I mean, again, this is what many
- 54:48Speaker 10: people would still consider Mariah Carey. She considers herself R
- 54:53Speaker 10: & B. She's kind of wrong, but again, that was, well,
- 54:57Speaker 10: that's where she started from. That whole first album would
- 55:00Speaker 10: have been categorized as R & B where, I mean,
- 55:03Speaker 10: she's nothing but pop through and through, truthfully, but I
- 55:06Speaker 10: don't know. So to me, yeah, there's some scary 90s
- 55:10Speaker 10: R & B, but this was an interesting version. I
- 55:13Speaker 10: ended up liking it a lot more than I expected.
- 55:45Speaker 11: I swear to God.
- 55:47Speaker 3: I feel the heat.
- 56:13Speaker 10: Thank you.
- 56:14Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 56:54Speaker 11: Touch if you will, you must have made. I feel
- 57:00Speaker 11: how it trembles inside. You've got the butterflies all tied up.
- 57:09Speaker 3: Don't make me change. Even dogs have pride.
- 57:22Speaker 1: In a world so cold Maybe I'm just stupid Maybe,
- 57:27Speaker 1: maybe Maybe I'm just like my mom Maybe I'm just
- 57:33Speaker 1: like my mother.
- 57:35Speaker 7: Maybe I'm just like my mother She's never.
- 57:39Speaker 1: Satisfied Never satisfied Why? Why? This is what it sounds.
- 57:50Speaker 3: Like When does it rise?
- 58:08Speaker 13: .
- 58:10Speaker 3: .
- 58:28Speaker 1: My partner, you know, you know, you.
- 58:33Speaker 3: Know it's too poor Maybe I'm just.
- 58:36Speaker 1: Like my mother She's never satisfied Why do we scream
- 58:45Speaker 1: at each other?
- 58:47Speaker 3: This is what it.
- 58:48Speaker 1: Sounds like Windows.
- 58:52Speaker 10: Drive All right. Do you need to continue? your dancing, Jacqueline? No,
- 59:11Speaker 10: I'm done, I'm done.
- 59:12Speaker 5: All right.
- 59:12Speaker 4: You stopped the music. I can't keep dancing.
- 59:16Speaker 10: The track has come to an end, and now we
- 59:18Speaker 10: must continue on on our journey. Do you want to
- 59:21Speaker 10: hit some more Genuine? Any more love for Genuine there?
- 59:25Speaker 6: I did like how, in the cover, he kind of
- 59:30Speaker 6: did it his own way, but he also... his own
- 59:34Speaker 6: interpretation of it was very Prince-like. There's those little loop
- 59:37Speaker 6: sounds in the background.
- 59:38Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 59:39Speaker 10: Which also had a weird jungle sound going on. And
- 59:42Speaker 10: he didn't mess with.
- 59:43Speaker 4: The vocals too much. He didn't do anything crazy.
- 59:45Speaker 10: I was like tying in a little jungle love in
- 59:47Speaker 10: the background. He did drop the beat out.
- 59:50Speaker 11: True. Yeah.
- 59:52Speaker 4: That is probably my favorite too, off the album. Not
- 59:55Speaker 4: to be like everybody else, but I just like when
- 59:58Speaker 4: Prince is like, I got issues. Maybe I'm too much
- 1:00:02Speaker 4: like my father.
- 1:00:02Speaker 10: He definitely does.
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: In a sense.
- 1:00:05Speaker 10: And he found a great way to work them out. Actually,
- 1:00:07Speaker 10: if I remember, that's the one that wasn't even on
- 1:00:11Speaker 10: the soundtrack when he took it to the label and
- 1:00:14Speaker 10: was putting the stuff together for the movie. They were
- 1:00:17Speaker 10: just like, eh, it's a little short. Can we throw
- 1:00:19Speaker 10: another song in there? And he went home for like
- 1:00:21Speaker 10: a weekend. And all of that is him. Again, I
- 1:00:25Speaker 10: don't think there's any in the revolution there. I think
- 1:00:27Speaker 10: he sat at home, worked all that out musically, laid
- 1:00:30Speaker 10: down the tracks, went back in and handed it to him.
- 1:00:33Speaker 10: And that version that's on the album is the version
- 1:00:35Speaker 10: he put together himself. That weekend. I'm just like, good lord.
- 1:00:40Speaker 10: The biggest song off the album, he just sat down
- 1:00:43Speaker 10: one weekend and.
- 1:00:44Speaker 5: Knocked it out.
- 1:00:44Speaker 4: He's like, I can come up with two minutes of
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: one instrument part for a song over the weekend.
- 1:00:49Speaker 10: I know. Again, he is a genius. You have to
- 1:00:53Speaker 10: give him credit. He just knocked out the biggest number
- 1:00:56Speaker 10: on the album in a weekend because they said, hey,
- 1:00:58Speaker 10: can you come up with another song? He's like, oh,
- 1:01:00Speaker 10: I can come up with another song. He probably didn't.
- 1:01:02Speaker 6: Even stay at home that weekend. He probably went out.
- 1:01:05Speaker 10: And still wrote it. He was taking the limo back
- 1:01:10Speaker 10: to the mansion, and he was like, oh, think of... Yeah,
- 1:01:13Speaker 10: let me write something down. Hold on a sec. Dig
- 1:01:15Speaker 10: if you will. Take a left here. Okay, so now
- 1:01:19Speaker 10: we get to what I think is my favorite song
- 1:01:22Speaker 10: on this soundtrack. This version is the most fun of
- 1:01:27Speaker 10: any song you're ever going to get. I like the style.
- 1:01:30Speaker 10: It applies to this song, and.
- 1:01:35Speaker 10: Yeah, I think we better just get to it and
- 1:01:37Speaker 10: we'll discuss it when we come back.
- 1:01:56Speaker 3: I'm something that you'll never understand. I'll never beat you.
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: I'll never lie. And if you're evil, I'll forgive you
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: right back up.
- 1:02:06Speaker 8: But I wouldn't die for you, yeah. But I wouldn't
- 1:02:16Speaker 8: die for you, yeah.
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: You're just a sinner, I'm told.
- 1:03:04Speaker 7: I'll be your fire when you're cold. I'll make you
- 1:03:08Speaker 7: happy whenever.
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: You say it.
- 1:03:11Speaker 7: I'll make you good when you're bad.
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: I am not human and.
- 1:03:16Speaker 7: I'm not a dove. I am your conscience, I am
- 1:03:20Speaker 7: your love. And baby, all that I really need is
- 1:03:25Speaker 7: to know that you're mine.
- 1:03:54Speaker 3: Darling, if you want me to Darling, if you want
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: me to Darling, if you want.
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: Me to You know that I'd die for you Darling.
- 1:04:15Speaker 3: If you want me to You know that I'd die
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: for you.
- 1:04:32Speaker 14: See, what I like so much about this song is
- 1:04:40Speaker 14: it's genuine in its.
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: Traditionalness. Like, it is set.
- 1:04:50Speaker 10: Up like a standard mariachi song, but then when they
- 1:05:05Speaker 10: get to the lyrics and when they get to his
- 1:05:07Speaker 10: vocal performance, it's very genuine in its interpretation of it.
- 1:05:13Speaker 10: I think he really does a good version, and it
- 1:05:15Speaker 10: does actually feel like it has more heart than you
- 1:05:18Speaker 10: would assume a cheesy cover with mariachi background would be,
- 1:05:23Speaker 10: but it comes through as a pretty strong song, I think,
- 1:05:26Speaker 10: and yet is so much fun when you add in
- 1:05:28Speaker 10: the crazy mariachi background that it's I don't know. I really,
- 1:05:32Speaker 10: really like that.
- 1:05:33Speaker 4: It's almost too much fun for I would die for you.
- 1:05:35Speaker 10: It's like, let's throw a party.
- 1:05:37Speaker 4: I'm going to die for you.
- 1:05:38Speaker 10: That's one of the heavier songs if you go through
- 1:05:41Speaker 10: the lyrics of it. It's a pretty deep song and
- 1:05:45Speaker 10: it is all taken directly from his life. Again, the
- 1:05:48Speaker 10: stuff in the movie there of his mom and dad
- 1:05:51Speaker 10: really happened. The line, I would die for you, he
- 1:05:54Speaker 10: heard his father say to his mother, probably after beating
- 1:05:57Speaker 10: the hell out of her. So it's like, that is
- 1:05:59Speaker 10: all really out of Prince's life. So again, it is
- 1:06:03Speaker 10: kind of weird to now filter it through this fun
- 1:06:05Speaker 10: mariachi band. But again, I think they do such a
- 1:06:09Speaker 10: solid job on that song that it's, yeah, I think
- 1:06:12Speaker 10: it's my favorite one on this. This whole accumulation. Yeah.
- 1:06:15Speaker 10: And again, I always promise an eclectic mixture. And this
- 1:06:19Speaker 10: one is definitely mixing it up.
- 1:06:21Speaker 6: Return of the Horns, again.
- 1:06:22Speaker 3: That's right.
- 1:06:23Speaker 6: They're not sexy horns.
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: They're just very.
- 1:06:26Speaker 10: They're way more upbeat. Return of the Horns. Way more upbeat.
- 1:06:30Speaker 10: All right. So now, baby, I'm a star.
- 1:06:34Speaker 4: I am the greatest.
- 1:06:35Speaker 6: And they're all about me. And that's what his dad
- 1:06:38Speaker 6: would say. His dad would say that to himself in
- 1:06:40Speaker 6: the mirror. That's where he got that line from.
- 1:06:43Speaker 10: Probably so. This version is Buddy Miles, and he gets
- 1:06:48Speaker 10: what the song is going for.
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: I'm a big, bright, shining star.
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: You know I'm talking about my dreams always coming true.
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: Look me over Tell me, do you like what you see?
- 1:07:39Speaker 3: I'm rich on personality.
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: Hey, check it all out.
- 1:07:46Speaker 3: Baby, I know what.
- 1:07:48Speaker 7: It's all about.
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: For a night or two, you'll see my point of view.
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: Even if I have to scream and shout. Baby, I'm
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: a star. And I know it now.
- 1:08:16Speaker 3: Hey, take a listen. Tell me, do you like what
- 1:08:20Speaker 3: you hear? The beat don't.
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: Turn you on.
- 1:08:23Speaker 3: Just say the word, I'm gone. Honey, I know ain't
- 1:08:28Speaker 3: nothing wrong with your ears. Hey, take it all out.
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: Don't look now, it just might be too late. If
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: my luck don't change tonight, there's got to be.
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: A better life. Take a picture, sweetie.
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: I ain't got time to waste. I'm a liar. I
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: don't want to stop till I reach the top.
- 1:08:56Speaker 11: You might.
- 1:09:00Speaker 10: Not know it now.
- 1:09:01Speaker 8: Baby, I'm a star.
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: I'm a star. I don't want to stop till I
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: reach the top.
- 1:09:10Speaker 9: Baby, I just want to be what you want me
- 1:09:13Speaker 9: to be.
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: I want to be a star. Nothing comes too easy.
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: You see what I'm all about.
- 1:09:23Speaker 3: Keep screaming, shout.
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: Baby, baby, baby, baby. You might not know it now. Baby,
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: I'm a star, I'm a star. I don't want to
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: stop till I reach the top. Maybe, maybe somebody's lost us. Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Oh,
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: I want to do that. I'm a star.
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: Oh, baby, I'm a star.
- 1:11:12Speaker 10: Buddy Miles.
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:11:14Speaker 10: I think he takes it a very sort of old
- 1:11:17Speaker 10: school blues version, meshed with rock the way most of
- 1:11:20Speaker 10: them become at this point. But, I mean, that is
- 1:11:23Speaker 10: still the very basis of that. Like if somebody gets
- 1:11:26Speaker 10: the message of that song is, hey, look how awesome
- 1:11:29Speaker 10: I am.
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:11:30Speaker 6: The sound of the song is very like establishing shots
- 1:11:33Speaker 6: of big skyscrapers. You know, before revealing some Wall Street
- 1:11:37Speaker 6: guy on a corner.
- 1:11:39Speaker 10: Are you shooting your own video? Wait a minute.
- 1:11:41Speaker 6: It's a nice purple dress.
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: It's very purpley.
- 1:11:44Speaker 10: So, I don't know. We're rounding it out. We're wrapping
- 1:11:47Speaker 10: up the soundtrack here. And it goes out with the
- 1:11:50Speaker 10: most somber of the bunch. It's the lighter tune. It's like,
- 1:11:56Speaker 10: bust out your phones and hold them up now. You
- 1:12:00Speaker 10: can't use lighters anymore. But get out your lighter app
- 1:12:04Speaker 10: and get ready to rock out. But this version, I thought,
- 1:12:08Speaker 10: I don't know. And I don't even know. Are you
- 1:12:11Speaker 10: familiar with this girl? Because I'm not even 100% sure
- 1:12:14Speaker 10: how to pronounce it. It's U-R-S. I'm not 100% on that. See,
- 1:12:20Speaker 10: that's what I'm saying. Is it Ursel? Urseli. We're going
- 1:12:25Speaker 10: to call her Ursel. Cause that's the thing. I really
- 1:12:28Speaker 10: couldn't find much else about her. There's that album that
- 1:12:31Speaker 10: she's done and she's got good amount of music out there,
- 1:12:35Speaker 10: but I couldn't really find anything on her or like
- 1:12:38Speaker 10: there were no interviews with her. Like I haven't seen
- 1:12:40Speaker 10: her like going on shows, promoting things. Like she just
- 1:12:44Speaker 10: sort of threw some music out into the world and
- 1:12:46Speaker 10: then disappeared. I don't know. But she has like, I
- 1:12:50Speaker 10: guess it's her thing is to do these like sort
- 1:12:52Speaker 10: of jazzy covers of popular songs. So she took a
- 1:12:56Speaker 10: whole bunch of them from the 90s and like did
- 1:12:59Speaker 10: this like reinterpretation of them. And then somewhere before that,
- 1:13:03Speaker 10: she pulled Purple Rain and did a version. And it's
- 1:13:06Speaker 10: I thought it was a different way to go with
- 1:13:08Speaker 10: it because it seems like you're going to go the
- 1:13:10Speaker 10: very standard. I don't know. Like to me, it's so
- 1:13:15Speaker 10: straightforward the way Purple Rain is. It's just a big
- 1:13:18Speaker 10: ballady kind of a heartstring song. And like that's the
- 1:13:21Speaker 10: way most people are going to take it. She at
- 1:13:23Speaker 10: least does a different version with it. that I think
- 1:13:26Speaker 10: is kind.
- 1:13:27Speaker 3: Of interesting I never.
- 1:13:32Speaker 5: Meant to cause you any.
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: Sorrow I never meant to cause you any pain I
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: only wanted to one time see you laughing I only
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: wanna see you laughing in the proper rain Purple rain,
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: purple rain Purple rain, purple rain Purple rain, purple.
- 1:14:10Speaker 5: Rain I only wanna.
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: See you bathing in the purple rain.
- 1:14:24Speaker 5: I never wanted to be your weekend lover.
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: I only wanted to be some kind of friend Baby.
- 1:14:41Speaker 5: I could never steal you.
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: From another It's such a shame our friendship had to
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: end Purple rain.
- 1:14:55Speaker 3: Purple rain.
- 1:14:58Speaker 9: I only wanna see you underneath the.
- 1:15:05Speaker 5: Purple rain Honey, I know, I know.
- 1:15:25Speaker 3: The times are changing.
- 1:15:30Speaker 5: It's time we all return for something new That means
- 1:15:34Speaker 5: you too You say you wanna lay down But you
- 1:15:40Speaker 5: can't seem to make up your mind I think you
- 1:15:42Speaker 5: better close up And get into the.
- 1:15:46Speaker 9: Purple rain Purple rain Purple rain Purple rain, purple rain Oh,
- 1:16:00Speaker 9: purple rain, purple rain I wanna see you, wanna see
- 1:16:06Speaker 9: you In the purple rain For the way I am
- 1:16:19Speaker 9: So that I wanna see you.
- 1:16:46Speaker 10: Again, she's got sort of the somber down, but she
- 1:16:49Speaker 10: adds in the very skilled piano and very jazzy sound
- 1:16:56Speaker 10: to it.
- 1:16:56Speaker 6: Very tender and vulnerable voice.
- 1:16:59Speaker 4: I can't tell if she's playing piano or if she's
- 1:17:01Speaker 4: sitting on top of the piano. She could be either.
- 1:17:04Speaker 10: I think she can do both. She's that good.
- 1:17:06Speaker 4: I like that.
- 1:17:09Speaker 10: That was a good version, I thought. And still kind
- 1:17:11Speaker 10: of keeps the tone of what the song is doing. Yeah,
- 1:17:15Speaker 10: she's a sad tick. definitely puts her own spin on
- 1:17:18Speaker 10: it though I was like that's pretty cool.
- 1:17:20Speaker 4: And that's gospel-y like a big chorus of people.
- 1:17:24Speaker 6: Yeah putting your own spin on it is what a
- 1:17:27Speaker 6: good cover is what makes.
- 1:17:29Speaker 4: A good cover I think so way to take my
- 1:17:32Speaker 4: own words spin them back at me I did I did.
- 1:17:36Speaker 6: I'm sorry I should have sourced that little.
- 1:17:40Speaker 4: Quote or I'll sue you like Prince would.
- 1:17:46Speaker 10: All right, so we've been on this 30-year journey to
- 1:17:49Speaker 10: get through this soundtrack. So what do you take from it?
- 1:17:53Speaker 10: What is your experience with this soundtrack and Prince that
- 1:17:57Speaker 10: has made your life so much richer?
- 1:18:00Speaker 4: That mariachi band.
- 1:18:01Speaker 10: Damn straight.
- 1:18:04Speaker 3: Just filled my life with happiness.
- 1:18:07Speaker 4: I think there needs, I mean, you had kind of
- 1:18:09Speaker 4: a hard time finding all of these covers, so there
- 1:18:12Speaker 4: should probably be more.
- 1:18:14Speaker 3: But Underground.
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: Underground.
- 1:18:17Speaker 10: Again, I don't know. That's why I wasn't sure if
- 1:18:19Speaker 10: I was going to be able to find a ton.
- 1:18:20Speaker 10: That's why I thought maybe we would just kind of
- 1:18:22Speaker 10: pick the best we could. And I was afraid it
- 1:18:25Speaker 10: was all going to end up off that same, you know,
- 1:18:26Speaker 10: spin album. But then the more I got into it,
- 1:18:28Speaker 10: there are other ones. But I figured because he's so... Yeah.
- 1:18:31Speaker 10: Incubus did a fine job. Maybe we'll spin off onto
- 1:18:36Speaker 10: volume two and do some more of these. Because I
- 1:18:38Speaker 10: found enough that I think we could put together an
- 1:18:41Speaker 10: entire other soundtrack of Of alternate versions done. So, yeah.
- 1:18:47Speaker 6: To be continued.
- 1:18:48Speaker 10: Maybe so.
- 1:18:49Speaker 5: Maybe we'll.
- 1:18:50Speaker 4: Throw a little ink here.
- 1:18:52Speaker 3: Movie meltdown.
- 1:18:55Speaker 10: But, yeah, it was interesting. I thought because he's so
- 1:19:00Speaker 10: litigious that, like, maybe that would keep people from covering
- 1:19:04Speaker 10: him because they thought he would be really weird about it,
- 1:19:06Speaker 10: which he probably is, or they'd assumed it would cost
- 1:19:09Speaker 10: way too much money to cover it, which it probably does,
- 1:19:11Speaker 10: so I don't know how all that really works, but
- 1:19:15Speaker 10: there's still more covers out there than I thought there
- 1:19:17Speaker 10: would be. Some of them are hard to come by, though.
- 1:19:21Speaker 10: There are a few that have made their way underground,
- 1:19:23Speaker 10: it seems, but... We're going to do a cover.
- 1:19:28Speaker 6: We are, yeah.
- 1:19:30Speaker 4: I just decided that.
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:19:32Speaker 6: I was trying to sound like a new.
- 1:19:33Speaker 10: When do I show up to do the vocals? Because
- 1:19:37Speaker 10: I've been working on a killer When Doves Cry.
- 1:19:39Speaker 6: I actually was thinking about when we get home, I
- 1:19:43Speaker 6: was going to look up Purple Rain. I was just
- 1:19:46Speaker 6: going to play it for myself.
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: What?
- 1:19:49Speaker 4: Okay, but I know Purple Rain isn't your favorite album.
- 1:19:52Speaker 6: It's not my favorite Prince album. Right, that's what I meant.
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:19:58Speaker 4: But what one would you want to cover?
- 1:20:03Speaker 6: From Purple Rain?
- 1:20:05Speaker 4: From Purple Rain and just from Prince in general.
- 1:20:07Speaker 6: Okay, from Purple Rain, specifically, probably Purple Rain, the title track.
- 1:20:12Speaker 6: When Doves Cry is good, too, and it's a minimal setup.
- 1:20:17Speaker 6: That song was originally.
- 1:20:18Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:20:18Speaker 6: But other Prince songs, The Ballad of Dorothy Parker, or
- 1:20:25Speaker 6: If I Was Your Girlfriend.
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: Both of those.
- 1:20:27Speaker 10: So you're a sign of the times, man.
- 1:20:29Speaker 6: I am a sign of the times, man.
- 1:20:31Speaker 10: See, of the ones I think is awesome on that album,
- 1:20:34Speaker 10: The Cross is. Religious. Super religious, but I'm like, the
- 1:20:38Speaker 10: way that that is structured and the way that he
- 1:20:41Speaker 10: sets it all up, it's so well done that I'm
- 1:20:43Speaker 10: just like, religious or not, it's an awesome song. And
- 1:20:49Speaker 10: you got the look. Anytime we can work in some
- 1:20:54Speaker 10: Sheely on this thing, that's all good. Another connection of his.
- 1:20:59Speaker 3: Another.
- 1:21:00Speaker 10: Of his mini. Of his mini song. chicks in his entourage.
- 1:21:04Speaker 12: How many girls have you even slept with like two
- 1:21:07Speaker 12: and a half two and a half.
- 1:21:09Speaker 10: What is a half your hand all right do you
- 1:21:11Speaker 10: feel you've you've said all you need to say about purple.
- 1:21:14Speaker 4: Rain yeah i do purple rain we gotta get back
- 1:21:17Speaker 4: to the mansion that's right back.
- 1:21:19Speaker 10: To the mansion we'll let you guys listen to some
- 1:21:21Speaker 10: purple rain and we'll head on back to the mansion
- 1:21:24Speaker 10: start writing some songs and Two minutes or so.
- 1:21:27Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:21:27Speaker 10: Making billions of dollars. And not sharing them with anyone.
- 1:21:31Speaker 10: Without a rule of might, you get a life, we'll
- 1:21:34Speaker 10: provide the sound.
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: I only wanted to.
- 1:21:37Speaker 3: One time see you laughing I only wanted to see
- 1:21:41Speaker 3: you laughing.
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: What does she even look like now?
- 1:22:24Speaker 4: I'm going to look him up. I'm sorry, I'm looking
- 1:22:25Speaker 4: him up right now.
- 1:22:26Speaker 6: He probably has better clothes than when you saw him
- 1:22:30Speaker 6: as a teenager.
- 1:22:31Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean.
- 1:22:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:22:34Speaker 4: I don't see a picture of him as a teenager.
- 1:22:37Speaker 10: Who, Nick Cannon?
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:22:39Speaker 10: Three years ago when he was a teenager.
