Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:30Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:33Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:35Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 0:36Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other. The backyard, to dig
- 0:39Speaker 1: into the dirt, our mission to uncover the truth, to
- 0:42Speaker 1: confront the myth, to reclaim the story. On this bonus episode,
- 0:46Speaker 1: we're talking about our new episode on Pentagram, and we're
- 0:49Speaker 1: rewinding back to our Cramps and Brandon Lee episodes for
- 0:53Speaker 1: the Spooky season. Previewing next week's story on Houdini with
- 0:56Speaker 1: the Red Hot Chili Peppers making a guest appearance as
- 0:59Speaker 1: we get into your voicemails, text, dms, and as always,
- 1:03Speaker 1: a whole lot of Rosie. This is the podcast for
- 1:05Speaker 1: the musically obsessed, the outsiders, the independent thinkers who know
- 1:09Speaker 1: that the best history is the history that gets buried.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Disgraceland is where I tell the stories they didn't want told,
- 1:16Speaker 1: the kind you'll end up telling to someone else. All right, discos,
- 1:19Speaker 1: let's get into it all right. Before I put these
- 1:31Speaker 1: after party episodes together, I usually do a quick cruise
- 1:34Speaker 1: of the internet just to see if there's any music
- 1:37Speaker 1: news breaking that's worth talking to you guys about. This morning,
- 1:40Speaker 1: I came across this headline Spotify integrates into chat GPT
- 1:45Speaker 1: to bring new music recommendations, and it made me vomit
- 1:49Speaker 1: in my mouth. But it also made me think of
- 1:52Speaker 1: our new full episode where the character of Teddy Pentagram
- 1:57Speaker 1: gloriously recommends who our too young metal heads the awesomeness
- 2:01Speaker 1: of his favorite band, pentagram My. How far we have
- 2:07Speaker 1: come from those days of searching out the cool dude
- 2:11Speaker 1: at the record store to turn you on to the
- 2:13Speaker 1: music that you needed to know about. Instead of stone
- 2:17Speaker 1: record store clerks and cool older siblings and parents who
- 2:21Speaker 1: knew their way around the cool section of their record collection,
- 2:24Speaker 1: we now have artificial intelligence spots turning us on to
- 2:29Speaker 1: new music. It was always going to come to this, guys.
- 2:32Speaker 1: It was all it was bound to happen, and it's here. Somehow,
- 2:36Speaker 1: this is more egregious to me than AI creating music,
- 2:40Speaker 1: because that feels like something that I'll be able to
- 2:43Speaker 1: safely ignore this artificial intelligence recommendation technology. It feels like
- 2:50Speaker 1: something that's going to quickly become normalized. It already is.
- 2:53Speaker 1: I mean, this is essentially what Spotify has been doing
- 2:55Speaker 1: with their playlist for years. But now with chat EPT
- 2:58Speaker 1: and language based AI, it's just going to explode, become
- 3:04Speaker 1: totally normalized. And I gotta say, like, I just feel
- 3:08Speaker 1: bad for future generations. The thrill of discovery, that sense
- 3:14Speaker 1: of danger, that feeling of being special, all those emotions
- 3:19Speaker 1: that you got when your musical sense, when you're Vinyl Sherpa,
- 3:23Speaker 1: when you're a rock and roll Obi wan Kenobi played
- 3:25Speaker 1: you Black Flag for the first time, or explain to
- 3:28Speaker 1: you what led Zeppelin's Deal with the Devil was all about,
- 3:31Speaker 1: or passed down a grateful dead bootleg cassette that they
- 3:34Speaker 1: got from like a cool person in their neighborhood, or
- 3:37Speaker 1: whatever it made you swear not to tell your parents
- 3:39Speaker 1: that he or she was gonna let you listen to
- 3:41Speaker 1: Straight out of Compton. All that will soon be completely gone.
- 3:49Speaker 1: A dead ritual from the past, like checking your messages
- 3:53Speaker 1: on an answering machine, or making a mixtape for a
- 3:56Speaker 1: girl or a guy that you got to crush on.
- 3:59Speaker 1: It's all gone. It's already gone, but it's really about
- 4:02Speaker 1: to be just dead dead dead dead dead dead dead.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Our question of the week coming into this after party
- 4:09Speaker 1: was who turned you onto music as a kid, And
- 4:15Speaker 1: we're gonna dive into your answers later in the show.
- 4:18Speaker 1: But I read this shit about chat, GPT and Spotify
- 4:21Speaker 1: recommendations and it just made me go, you know what,
- 4:22Speaker 1: fucking I just I just want to talk. I just
- 4:25Speaker 1: want to talk about music with these guys today. I
- 4:27Speaker 1: just want to recommend stuff. That's all I want to do.
- 4:29Speaker 1: I want to talk about cool shit. And I'm gonna
- 4:32Speaker 1: do recommendations with Zeth later in the show in the
- 4:35Speaker 1: exclusive section, but in the meantime, right here, I'm gonna
- 4:38Speaker 1: frame this around Halloween music and recommend music to you guys,
- 4:43Speaker 1: old school style, analog style, just gonna open up a
- 4:46Speaker 1: discussion right here, right now that will prompt some talk
- 4:50Speaker 1: about a certain type of music. And then, like I said,
- 4:52Speaker 1: later in the show, I will dive in more fully
- 4:54Speaker 1: with Zeth and give you specific recommendations. But I want
- 4:57Speaker 1: to just be open here and just talk about the
- 5:00Speaker 1: stuff that I'm vibing on right now. It's October, and
- 5:05Speaker 1: there's a specific type of music that I think we
- 5:08Speaker 1: all get into in October. I certainly do. My wife
- 5:11Speaker 1: and I. We've been hosting these October dinner parties now
- 5:15Speaker 1: for a couple of years. We had it a week
- 5:17Speaker 1: early at the end of September this year. But that's
- 5:19Speaker 1: not the point. The point is that I've had an
- 5:22Speaker 1: epic mix going on since about twenty twenty two with
- 5:27Speaker 1: great fall slash Halloween music. Now with this mix, with
- 5:31Speaker 1: this playlist, I'm not trying to give Haunted House vibes
- 5:36Speaker 1: with the mix, but I am trying to give Donnie
- 5:38Speaker 1: Darko dinner party vibes. Okay. So I want to look
- 5:41Speaker 1: at this great Halloween music from the perspective of a
- 5:46Speaker 1: list that I found on Rolling Stone of you know,
- 5:50Speaker 1: what they recommend in this genre in this area, and
- 5:53Speaker 1: line it up against my mix. Okay, And then, like
- 5:57Speaker 1: I said, Zath and I will come in during the
- 5:59Speaker 1: exclusive section of the show and we'll give you like
- 6:01Speaker 1: three just banger recommendations each on stuff that you're probably
- 6:06Speaker 1: not gonna find I don't think anywhere else. I mean,
- 6:08Speaker 1: some of you, I'm sure will have heard of some
- 6:10Speaker 1: of this stuff. But we're trying to, you know, pull
- 6:12Speaker 1: you under the covers with us. Here first, a sampling
- 6:16Speaker 1: of the track listing from my Halloween playlist. I'm not
- 6:20Speaker 1: gonna give you the whole thing because it's just too
- 6:22Speaker 1: damn long, but here's a taste Diamonds and Rust Judas
- 6:25Speaker 1: Priest Joan BIA's cover. It's a fucking great song. The
- 6:27Speaker 1: Killing Moon by Echoing the Bunnyman. There's that Donny Darko
- 6:30Speaker 1: dinner party vibe at its best that I was talking about.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Give Me Danger by the Stooges, just sound spooky. Don't
- 6:36Speaker 1: Fear the Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult because we need
- 6:38Speaker 1: the classic Mom and Dad from the seventies are breaking
- 6:41Speaker 1: up vibes. We need that. Peppered in Fascination Street by
- 6:44Speaker 1: The Cure. Are we having sex or are we freaked out?
- 6:48Speaker 1: Robert Smith, I don't know what's happening. Explain it to me.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Wolf Like Me by TV on the Radio. You are
- 6:54Speaker 1: the protagonists in your own horror movie here with this song,
- 6:56Speaker 1: So run Season of the Witch, but the Lana del
- 6:59Speaker 1: Rave version because depending on the day, I either love
- 7:02Speaker 1: or hate Donovan. Attack of the Ghostwriters by The Ravenettes
- 7:06Speaker 1: Hurdy gurdy Man by Donovan because the movie Zodiac made
- 7:09Speaker 1: me love this song, even if I do hate Donovan
- 7:11Speaker 1: on some days. My Girlfriend is a Witch by October
- 7:13Speaker 1: Country Murder in the Red Barn by Tom Wads. Just
- 7:16Speaker 1: to make sure everyone at the dinner party isn't getting
- 7:18Speaker 1: too comfortable. Were Wolves of London by Warren Zevon because
- 7:21Speaker 1: his hair was perfect. You Make Love and Fun by
- 7:23Speaker 1: Fleetwood Mac. I don't know. I find that tune Haunting
- 7:25Speaker 1: London Dungeon by Misfits because you know London Dungeon. Evil
- 7:29Speaker 1: Woman by Black Sabbath, Evil Woman by Elo, Wild in
- 7:32Speaker 1: the Streets by Garland Jeffries because city kids get to
- 7:35Speaker 1: celebrate Halloween too, And of course ninety six Tiers by
- 7:38Speaker 1: question Mark and The Mysterians and the Ripper by Judas Priest.
- 7:41Speaker 1: That's two Judas Priest songs already if you're counting Venus
- 7:44Speaker 1: of Avenue d by Mink Deville. And I could go
- 7:47Speaker 1: on and on and on, but I will not. This
- 7:50Speaker 1: list does not quit. But let's look to Rolling Stone
- 7:54Speaker 1: magazine and their list of twenty five songs that are
- 7:58Speaker 1: truly terrifying. Now I'm not gonna give you all twenty five.
- 8:01Speaker 1: But I'm gonna give you a smattering because this is
- 8:04Speaker 1: a pretty incredible list. It's from twenty nineteen. I don't
- 8:07Speaker 1: know if that's why I find Rolling Stone to be
- 8:10Speaker 1: insufferable these days, but you know, they really came to
- 8:13Speaker 1: with this. They brought it here with this list, all right.
- 8:16Speaker 1: I want to get into some of these songs with you, guys. Okay.
- 8:19Speaker 1: At twenty five, number twenty five, they have a song
- 8:22Speaker 1: called Murder of the Lawson Family by the Carolina Buddies.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Now I've heard this song. This story is the story
- 8:32Speaker 1: of this song is the basis for our Derek and
- 8:34Speaker 1: the Domino's Beeline story about the slaughter of the Lawson
- 8:38Speaker 1: family by their patriarch, Charlie Lawson on Christmas Day. So
- 8:42Speaker 1: this tune is more of a Christmas song for me
- 8:45Speaker 1: than a Halloween song. I've never heard this version though,
- 8:47Speaker 1: by the Carolina Buddies. I have heard other versions that
- 8:50Speaker 1: are you know, they're not very they're not spooky because
- 8:56Speaker 1: it's kind of old timey waltz country bluegrass. The subject
- 9:00Speaker 1: is scary, but the vibe isn't. I think it's the
- 9:04Speaker 1: what is the time? Too? For what is Walt's Time?
- 9:06Speaker 1: It just it doesn't spook me out, how okay? So
- 9:09Speaker 1: but whatever I mean. I credit Rolling Stone for having
- 9:11Speaker 1: this tune because the subject matter is as halloweeny as
- 9:14Speaker 1: it gets. Anyways. Next on the Rolling Stone list is
- 9:17Speaker 1: another old timey country song Louvin Brothers by Knoxville Girl,
- 9:21Speaker 1: which to me scares the hell out of me every
- 9:24Speaker 1: single time. There are other versions of this song that
- 9:26Speaker 1: are great, most notably the Lemonhead's version, which I love
- 9:29Speaker 1: totally different. There are certain artifacts from my past where
- 9:35Speaker 1: if I didn't consume them, I don't believe I would
- 9:37Speaker 1: be talking into the microphone with you right now, you know,
- 9:40Speaker 1: reading Helter Skelter by Vincent Buliosi as bunk as I
- 9:44Speaker 1: think that book now is. But it led me on
- 9:47Speaker 1: this path, and so did this song by by the
- 9:50Speaker 1: Luvin Brothers, specifically Knoxville Girl. It's one of the if
- 9:54Speaker 1: someone asked me, what's a murder ballad? This is the
- 9:57Speaker 1: song I'm playing for them. They've got. Rolling Stone has
- 10:00Speaker 1: the Doors the End, which I love, but this is
- 10:04Speaker 1: the wrong doors song for Halloween. You need to have
- 10:08Speaker 1: Riders on the Storm as your Doors tune for your
- 10:13Speaker 1: Halloween playlist. It's so spooky. It's so cinematic. Zeth and I.
- 10:19Speaker 1: For the All Access members, you're going to hear about
- 10:22Speaker 1: this in a little bit more detail when we get
- 10:23Speaker 1: into it. But Zeth and I spent all last night
- 10:26Speaker 1: with the cameras on the microphones on talking about Riders
- 10:29Speaker 1: on the Storm by the Doors and Billy Cokeye Cook,
- 10:34Speaker 1: the Killing Spree Juvenile delinquent hitchhiker from the nineteen fifties.
- 10:39Speaker 1: If you want to know why we were doing that
- 10:41Speaker 1: again seeing the exclusive section of this after party next
- 10:44Speaker 1: on the Rolling Stone list. This is great because this
- 10:49Speaker 1: is one of those songs that I know and I
- 10:52Speaker 1: love and I listen to often, and I just, for
- 10:55Speaker 1: whatever reason, never thought to put it on my playlist
- 10:58Speaker 1: of great Halloween tunes, great spooky season tunes, and it
- 11:02Speaker 1: is Leonard Cohen's Avalanche. I love this song. I love it.
- 11:10Speaker 1: I love it so much from Songs of Love and Hate.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Great great album.
- 11:17Speaker 1: I don't know why, man, when I'm you know, when
- 11:20Speaker 1: I got one, when I got one going, When I've
- 11:22Speaker 1: tied one on and it's late at night and the
- 11:24Speaker 1: wife's asleep and I'm still roaming around the house looking
- 11:27Speaker 1: for shit to do. This is one of those records
- 11:28Speaker 1: I put on and I just kind of, you know,
- 11:30Speaker 1: do my thing. This one in this context, however, Avalanche
- 11:38Speaker 1: the song check these lyrics out. Your laws do not
- 11:42Speaker 1: compel me to kneel grotesque and bear. It is your turn, beloved,
- 11:48Speaker 1: It is your flesh that I wear. Old Leonard was
- 11:54Speaker 1: on a heater with that one fucking great tune Love It.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Can't wait to put it on my list suicides Frank
- 12:00Speaker 1: tear Drop another great song. I feel like I talked
- 12:02Speaker 1: about this recently with you guys. That's on the list.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Of course, Springsteen's Nebraska. You can't talk about scary shit
- 12:10Speaker 1: without talking about this song. I still remember hearing the
- 12:14Speaker 1: closing lines of this tune and being chilled to my core.
- 12:19Speaker 1: And this, of course, just to give you a little context,
- 12:22Speaker 1: Charlie stark Weather, and this is true. He said this.
- 12:26Speaker 1: He's on trial for his life after one of the
- 12:31Speaker 1: first serial killers, if you want to call him that.
- 12:34Speaker 1: And Springsteen says about stark Weather at trial, these are
- 12:38Speaker 1: the lyrics. They declared me unfit to live, set into
- 12:43Speaker 1: that great void, my soul behurled. They want to know
- 12:47Speaker 1: why I did what I did? Well, sir, I guess
- 12:51Speaker 1: there's just a meanness in this world. Oh crushing, chilling lyric.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Also on the list, great tune PJ. Harvey down by
- 13:03Speaker 1: the Water, fucking great. Great Scott Walker Farmer in the City.
- 13:09Speaker 1: I don't know this song. Maybe you guys do, and
- 13:12Speaker 1: I'm talking about it here because I'm hoping. I'm hoping
- 13:17Speaker 1: one of you guys out there who's a Scott Walker
- 13:20Speaker 1: fan can point me in the right direction. Where do
- 13:23Speaker 1: I start with Scott Walker? I want to know? Okay,
- 13:25Speaker 1: Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds song of Joy. This
- 13:28Speaker 1: should be on my list. It's from his Murder Ballads album.
- 13:33Speaker 1: I'll sure you guys, Nick Kay, fancy know this tune.
- 13:35Speaker 1: We're gonna do a Nick Cave episode soon enough. Tom Waits,
- 13:38Speaker 1: what's he building in there? My wife and I always
- 13:42Speaker 1: joke about the song because in our very first apartment
- 13:44Speaker 1: together in Arlington, Massachusetts, in the Heights in Arlington Heights
- 13:50Speaker 1: with the Soshas, we had finally moved away from the
- 13:53Speaker 1: Greasers and we're living in the Heights and this dude
- 13:56Speaker 1: behind us had this house. This fuck guy.
- 14:00Speaker 3: Man.
- 14:00Speaker 1: They couldn't have made a horror movie character better than
- 14:03Speaker 1: this guy. He was something else, I you know, shortened stature,
- 14:08Speaker 1: and he only came out at night, and he always
- 14:11Speaker 1: seemed to be dressed for winter, even if it was
- 14:13Speaker 1: the summer. And I shit you not, this guy he
- 14:16Speaker 1: lived right behind us, Like I fucking kid you not.
- 14:19Speaker 1: He wore surgical gloves all the time, and we never
- 14:24Speaker 1: knew why. He freaked us the fuck out. He's probably
- 14:27Speaker 1: responsible for us moving out a year before we should have.
- 14:30Speaker 1: But we would always just we'd see him, we come
- 14:31Speaker 1: in the house, we'd be like, what's he building in there?
- 14:34Speaker 1: And that's from that Tom Waite song. Solid solid list
- 14:37Speaker 1: from Rolling Stone. Zeth and I are gonna have more
- 14:40Speaker 1: non AI generated spooky music recommendations for you guys in
- 14:45Speaker 1: the exclusive section of this episode, recommendations that I promise
- 14:49Speaker 1: you are not going to be able to get anywhere else,
- 14:52Speaker 1: So stick around for that. If you're an All Access member.
- 14:54Speaker 1: If you're not an All Access member and you want
- 14:57Speaker 1: exclusive content like this every month, you want ad free
- 15:00Speaker 1: listening on all Disgraceland and Hollywood Land episodes. If you
- 15:03Speaker 1: want behind the scenes content, if you want to talk
- 15:06Speaker 1: to me and Zef and your fellow Disgraceland listeners, your
- 15:09Speaker 1: fellow music obsessives daily you want to talk to us
- 15:12Speaker 1: in the chat, Well, now is the time to sign up.

- 15:18Speaker 1: five dollars a month, the cost of one cop the

- 15:24Speaker 1: that price it's going to go up before Halloween, all right.
- 15:27Speaker 1: You can sign up now on Apple Podcasts or on Patreon.

- 15:47Speaker 1: will be back in a flash with your voicemails and text.
- 16:13Speaker 2: Alrighty.
- 16:13Speaker 1: This week we dropped our episode on Pentagram and the
- 16:15Speaker 1: Feed for all of you as our newest full episode.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Coming up right after this our rewind episodes direct for
- 16:22Speaker 1: the spooky Halloween heads out there. We've got the Cramps
- 16:26Speaker 1: and our episode on Brandon Lee and the Crow. Next
- 16:30Speaker 1: week on Tuesday, our next full new episode will be
- 16:34Speaker 1: on Houdini with a special appearance in that episode by
- 16:37Speaker 1: the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Okay, keeping with our haunted
- 16:40Speaker 1: October theme, I want to switch it up as it
- 16:43Speaker 1: pertains to the question of the week. I want to
- 16:47Speaker 1: stay on this topic of scary as all hell music.
- 16:51Speaker 1: I want your songs that spook you out. I want
- 16:56Speaker 1: to know the records that give you the creep pop.
- 17:00Speaker 1: I want you know we talked about you know, who
- 17:03Speaker 1: are the people who turned us onto music as a
- 17:04Speaker 1: little kids? You know what records are you guys playing
- 17:07Speaker 1: for your little sister, for your friend who you know,
- 17:10Speaker 1: your cousin, your kids, whatever, did you kind of creep
- 17:12Speaker 1: them out? I remember playing a Night Prowler by ACDC
- 17:16Speaker 1: for my sister when she was probably well ten, I
- 17:19Speaker 1: was probably fifteen and scaring the shit out of her.
- 17:23Speaker 1: What spooky music are you? Are you vibing on in October?
- 17:29Speaker 1: Hit me up six one seven, nine oh six sixty
- 17:32Speaker 1: six three eight, let me know, voicemail, text, Let's lean
- 17:36Speaker 1: into this spooky music this month. Okay, to match all
- 17:39Speaker 1: the spooky stories we got going into the feed. Six
- 17:41Speaker 1: one seven, nine oh six six six three eight voicemail
- 17:45Speaker 1: and text let me know what songs? What records, artists
- 17:48Speaker 1: and bands gave you the songs, the tunes, the records
- 17:52Speaker 1: that give you the good kind of creeps. All right,
- 17:55Speaker 1: and we'll get into it all next week. I'll play
- 17:57Speaker 1: your voicemails, I'll play your text right here. Last week's
- 18:00Speaker 1: question of the week was who was your musical obi?
- 18:02Speaker 1: Wan Kenobi? Who is your sherpa who turned you onto
- 18:06Speaker 1: great music as a kid? Hanging on the telephone this
- 18:08Speaker 1: week right now with the eight one six.
- 18:11Speaker 4: Hey, regarding the question about our musical shurpas of the past.
- 18:18Speaker 4: Number one would be my big brother obviously, But another
- 18:23Speaker 4: huge one for me and all my friends, and was
- 18:27Speaker 4: a skate videos from especially from the nineties before they
- 18:30Speaker 4: had to worry about music rights. We heard about tons
- 18:34Speaker 4: of punk and hip hop acts, but I mean even
- 18:37Speaker 4: got into stuff like Public Image Limited and Stereo Lab
- 18:42Speaker 4: even like Herbie Hancock and stuff. Just so much great
- 18:46Speaker 4: music and stuff you don't just stumble upon in your
- 18:49Speaker 4: day to day life gets used in skate videos and
- 18:53Speaker 4: they're a great source to this day. So all right, thanks,
- 18:57Speaker 4: thanks for the pod, and keep up the good work.
- 18:59Speaker 1: Love this love that you bring up. Skate videos such
- 19:02Speaker 1: a great portal for incredible music. Skate skaters just had
- 19:05Speaker 1: the best fucking taste. Man. I never skated as a kid,
- 19:09Speaker 1: but I hung out with skaters on Instagram. I did
- 19:12Speaker 1: a little video and I mentioned one of my musical
- 19:15Speaker 1: shirt was growing up. This guy from Clinton, mass named
- 19:18Speaker 1: Dan Thomas, who was an older skater kid who let
- 19:21Speaker 1: me borrow these records turned me onto the Circle Jerks
- 19:24Speaker 1: bad brains, and I mentioned that I wasn't sure if
- 19:28Speaker 1: I ever returned the records, knowing full fully that I
- 19:31Speaker 1: that I didn't just one of those things. I didn't
- 19:33Speaker 1: steal the records. I just you know, Dan got busy.
- 19:36Speaker 1: I got busy. He never got a Circle Jerks record back,
- 19:39Speaker 1: and you know whatever, I'm a dick, I admit it. Anyhow,
- 19:43Speaker 1: his girlfriend, I haven't seen Dan in literally like three
- 19:46Speaker 1: four dec like forever decades. I haven't seen him, and
- 19:50Speaker 1: I don't. He doesn't even live in Clinton anymore, now
- 19:52Speaker 1: that do I. His girlfriend saw the video got in
- 19:56Speaker 1: touch with me. It was like, Dan wants his records back,
- 19:59Speaker 1: so I'm gonna work on getting them back for him,
- 20:02Speaker 1: and a little something else too, some some disgrace land merch.
- 20:05Speaker 1: But Dan was of course a skater this is way
- 20:08Speaker 1: before skate videos and all the great, very eclectic those
- 20:14Speaker 1: skate skate videos from the nineties, as as the eight
- 20:17Speaker 1: one six mentions eclectic music, great taste, great taste. All right,
- 20:21Speaker 1: let's check out this voicemail here from the six to
- 20:25Speaker 1: one nine.
- 20:27Speaker 3: Yoh Jay, this is Jeremy again. Thanks for playing my
- 20:31Speaker 3: voicemail last time. But the Pentagram episode was fucking brilliant
- 20:38Speaker 3: and it's funny that I started getting some recognition before
- 20:42Speaker 3: being shut down finally. But as far as the person
- 20:46Speaker 3: who influenced me would be Cliff Cunningham from the local
- 20:54Speaker 3: bands Social Spit. He used to work it off the record,
- 20:59Speaker 3: and that guy used to basically turn every local punk
- 21:04Speaker 3: rocker onto some great, great music. I actually did a
- 21:11Speaker 3: podcast with him on my podcast. My podcast is the
- 21:15Speaker 3: Union and Metro Podcast, and we talked with him about
- 21:21Speaker 3: his music and then working it off the record and
- 21:25Speaker 3: influencing others by letting them know what to buy. So
- 21:31Speaker 3: thanks again, brother hopeball as well, and I will talk
- 21:35Speaker 3: to you soon. I got to dig up this cactus,
- 21:38Speaker 3: so I got to get back.
- 21:39Speaker 1: To work again again with the local punk rockers and
- 21:44Speaker 1: the local skate kids, turning us on to music. Thanks
- 21:47Speaker 1: for your message six to one nine. Appreciate you. Matt
- 21:50Speaker 1: play the seven eight one.
- 21:53Speaker 5: Hi, Jake, this is Kelly. I'm a seven eight one.
- 21:57Speaker 5: I haven't been in touch in a little while. I've
- 21:58Speaker 5: had like the rough few months. I was just talking
- 22:01Speaker 5: about who influenced you musically, questioned, and that would be
- 22:06Speaker 5: my big brother, which is Frank Francis, and he passed
- 22:12Speaker 5: away in May.
- 22:12Speaker 3: But I thought of.
- 22:13Speaker 5: Him instantly when he said that, because he really was.
- 22:16Speaker 5: He was a guitarist and so he had like two
- 22:19Speaker 5: Martia half sacks in his room and like his friends
- 22:21Speaker 5: always oho playing and you know, had a band, different
- 22:24Speaker 5: bands whatever. I just distinctly remember hearing Metallica one. This
- 22:30Speaker 5: was the first time I ever heard it from him.
- 22:32Speaker 5: He got me into all that, you know, how was
- 22:35Speaker 5: the led Zeppelin and my dad thought me into Beatles,
- 22:38Speaker 5: Tanganda the way before that. I could sing Rocky with
- 22:40Speaker 5: Home when I was being asl But definitely my big
- 22:42Speaker 5: brother influencing regards to music because he was a musician
- 22:46Speaker 5: and you know, had all musician friends and so yeah,
- 22:49Speaker 5: that's that's how I got into that. Now. I just
- 22:53Speaker 5: like everything, but wanted to call in checking with you.
- 22:57Speaker 5: Haven't talked to you because I haven't called you in
- 22:59Speaker 5: a while. Look at good and I still love the show, obviously,
- 23:04Speaker 5: keep it up.
- 23:04Speaker 1: Rocco Mola seven eighty one. My condolences to you. Sounds
- 23:09Speaker 1: like Francis had some great tastes. And I hope you're
- 23:13Speaker 1: doing okay. I hope you're doing all right. I hope
- 23:16Speaker 1: you're getting through this time. I just you know, for
- 23:18Speaker 1: what it's worth. I can hear the Massachusetts in your voice,
- 23:21Speaker 1: and it brought a smile to my face and it
- 23:23Speaker 1: made me feel a little homesick. And I'm actually heading
- 23:27Speaker 1: home this weekend. I'm really excited about it. Thanks for
- 23:30Speaker 1: getting in touch. Seven eight one. Let's go. Let's do
- 23:34Speaker 1: some text guys. Just a reminder six one seven nine
- 23:36Speaker 1: oh six six six three eight voicemails and texts that
- 23:39Speaker 1: I want to hear from you on for next week
- 23:41Speaker 1: are going to be what is the spooky music that
- 23:44Speaker 1: gets you going? The records, the songs, the artists. All right,
- 23:49Speaker 1: let's do this text from the five to three. Oh hey, Disgrace,
- 23:52Speaker 1: slam Crue. I'm catching up on the October first Bonus episode.
- 23:55Speaker 1: My friend Derek was solely responsible for getting me into
- 23:58Speaker 1: punk rock and hardcore when I was twelve. He introduced
- 24:01Speaker 1: me to bands like Dagnasty, Youth of Today Uniform Choice
- 24:04Speaker 1: list goes on and on. He also mysteriously disappeared and
- 24:08Speaker 1: was found dead in a California desert in August of
- 24:11Speaker 1: twenty twenty one. At the time, there were swirling stories
- 24:16Speaker 1: of what happened traveling fast by wire, and many of
- 24:19Speaker 1: us suspected foul play, but no cause of death or
- 24:21Speaker 1: autopsy were released to my knowledge, and I'd still like
- 24:24Speaker 1: to know exactly what happened, but may never know. His
- 24:27Speaker 1: spirit remains close to five three to zero. I'm sorry
- 24:30Speaker 1: for your loss. Sounds like your friend Derek had some
- 24:33Speaker 1: great taste in music. Horrific story. That's awful. All right,
- 24:39Speaker 1: Let's go to the four to one six four to
- 24:44Speaker 1: one six text and hey Jake, thanks for shouting out
- 24:47Speaker 1: on the corner Miles Davis record. I think his fusion
- 24:51Speaker 1: is underrated. When I got back from Jamaica, a great
- 24:53Speaker 1: trip toward Marley's estate in the mountains, Gonja, rasta tour,
- 24:57Speaker 1: drank steel Bottom and got a private tour Johnny Cash
- 25:00Speaker 1: is secluded a state. When I got back, I set
- 25:03Speaker 1: my Instagram reel of street photography picks from rural Saint
- 25:06Speaker 1: Anne's to Doubop by Miles. It slaps. I use it
- 25:10Speaker 1: as my wake up song now and it always makes
- 25:12Speaker 1: me smile. Rock a rolla you know, four one six.
- 25:16Speaker 1: I'm very happy to hear you say this. I love
- 25:18Speaker 1: it when we're recommended stuff. Just talking about music and
- 25:22Speaker 1: people are as hyped on things as we are. It's
- 25:26Speaker 1: part of what it's why we do it. I think
- 25:27Speaker 1: you know, my favorite thing in the world literally is
- 25:29Speaker 1: to talk about music. So keep it coming. Six one
- 25:33Speaker 1: seven nine oh six six six three eight. You can
- 25:38Speaker 1: also email me Disgrace Lampod at gmail dot com. Pauli
- 25:42Speaker 1: McCracken writes in my musical Shirp, but my cool aunt Judy,
- 25:46Speaker 1: Judy turned me onto the grateful Dead when I was
- 25:48Speaker 1: a kid. She was my mom's little sister, the fun aunt,
- 25:51Speaker 1: my favorite person ever, and we get along so well
- 25:53Speaker 1: because she was so cool and let me do things
- 25:56Speaker 1: my mom would not, and I could. I could talk
- 25:58Speaker 1: to her about anything. Sounds like you had a great
- 26:01Speaker 1: one there, Polly, with your aunt Judy. Thanks for getting
- 26:04Speaker 1: in touch. I get a shout out my aunt Tracy,
- 26:06Speaker 1: who listens to Disgraceland religiously and who still is turning
- 26:10Speaker 1: me on to awesome music. She gets me new records,
- 26:13Speaker 1: her new record every Christmas, and it's It's always fantastic,
- 26:16Speaker 1: which reminds me I still have that Canned Heat John
- 26:20Speaker 1: Lee Hooker album that she got me this past Christmas
- 26:24Speaker 1: that I have to fully dive into that I have not.
- 26:26Speaker 1: I'm on it, Tracy, It's happening, all right. You guys
- 26:29Speaker 1: want to email Disgrace Lampod at gmail dot com. You
- 26:32Speaker 1: want to call me six one seven nine oh six
- 26:35Speaker 1: six six three eight. You can leave me a voicemail.
- 26:37Speaker 1: You can send me a text. You want to hit
- 26:39Speaker 1: me up on social you can do that too at
- 26:41Speaker 1: Disgrace lam Pod. Just to remind her the question of
- 26:43Speaker 1: the week, I want to know what spooky music you
- 26:46Speaker 1: are recommending for this Halloween season. Right now, I'm gonna
- 26:50Speaker 1: take a quick little break. I'm gonna rink a little tea.
- 26:52Speaker 1: I'll be back in a flash. All right, Matt, give
- 27:08Speaker 1: me the ticker. I want to eat my crow right away.
- 27:10Speaker 1: I want to get into this. Let's hit it. This
- 27:12Speaker 1: sixty second sports rant and under thirty seconds is once
- 27:15Speaker 1: again sponsored by five Hour Energies new Pumpkinspice flavor, your
- 27:18Speaker 1: favorite fall drink in an energy shot. You can pick
- 27:21Speaker 1: up a Pumpkin Spice five Hour Energy Shot available online
- 27:24Speaker 1: at five hour Energy dot com or Amazon. Listen, it
- 27:28Speaker 1: takes a real man to admit when he's wrong. Teach
- 27:31Speaker 1: this to Mike Sons all the time. A couple weeks ago,
- 27:35Speaker 1: I sat down in front of this very microphone and
- 27:38Speaker 1: I told y'all how Drake may was at best Drake maybe,
- 27:43Speaker 1: and that he wasn't the real deal, That maybe McCaffrey
- 27:48Speaker 1: was better. That Drake didn't look like he had any sand,
- 27:50Speaker 1: like he couldn't hang in the NFL, like the Pats
- 27:52Speaker 1: were headed toward a season of mediocrity at best, while
- 27:55Speaker 1: I'm here today to tell you flat out that I
- 27:58Speaker 1: was wrong for that performance on Sunday night in Buffalo.
- 28:02Speaker 1: I am convinced this dude can play. I am also
- 28:04Speaker 1: convinced Mike Vrabel can coach. I think both these dudes
- 28:08Speaker 1: have intangibles that lead to winning. Yes, I'll say it
- 28:10Speaker 1: right now, in tangibles that lead to championships. I'm not
- 28:13Speaker 1: saying we're winning anything this year, but I am saying
- 28:16Speaker 1: we've got winning in our future, and I think even
- 28:18Speaker 1: a playoff appearance this year. That's right, I said it.
- 28:21Speaker 1: I was wrong, but I'm happy about it. You know why,
- 28:23Speaker 1: because we have the two things you absolutely need to
- 28:26Speaker 1: win in the NFL right now in New England. That
- 28:28Speaker 1: is a real coach and a real quarterback who can
- 28:32Speaker 1: ball out. All right, Matt, more of a me a
- 28:35Speaker 1: couple rave than a rant. I know I didn't do well,
- 28:37Speaker 1: but just let me know where I came in on
- 28:38Speaker 1: the buzzer.
- 28:39Speaker 5: Let's see here a minute eight, Jake, not too bad.
- 28:42Speaker 1: You know, I don't care. I don't care that I
- 28:44Speaker 1: didn't beat the buzzer. We beat the Bills in Buffalo. Baby.
- 28:48Speaker 1: That was the sports rant sponsored by five Hour Energies
- 28:50Speaker 1: New Pumpkin Spice Flavor. These new Pumpkin Spice five hour
- 28:53Speaker 1: Energy shots are fall in a bottle and bring that
- 28:55Speaker 1: classic pumpkin spice flavor that we all know and love
- 28:58Speaker 1: our favorite fall drink in an energy shot. You can
- 29:01Speaker 1: pick up a Pumpkinspice five hour Energy shot available online
- 29:04Speaker 1: at five hour energy dot com or Amazon. So every Wednesday,
- 29:10Speaker 1: Doctor Zeth Lundy from the Presley Memorial Hospital graces all
- 29:14Speaker 1: of you with his film in cinema knowledge in the
- 29:16Speaker 1: Hollywood Land Feed, here's a little of me grilling Zeth
- 29:19Speaker 1: on what he's got cooking in the Rap Party bonus
- 29:21Speaker 1: episode this week and why you should be subscribed to
- 29:24Speaker 1: Hollywood Land for the finest and true crime in Hollywood podcasting. Okay,
- 29:30Speaker 1: what are we going to speak to? I wanted an
- 29:31Speaker 1: update on Rap Party because I'm not gonna I don't
- 29:34Speaker 1: know that I'm traveling this week. I don't know how
- 29:36Speaker 1: sometime to see if I can bring me in. What
- 29:38Speaker 1: are you talking to the people about? Let me know?
- 29:39Speaker 1: What's all?
- 29:39Speaker 2: Pretty interesting stuff? Actually there was. I basically opened the
- 29:43Speaker 2: Wrap party asking the question our movie's dead, which is
- 29:46Speaker 2: a question that people ask all the time at any
- 29:48Speaker 2: given time in movie history. I guess, but it's kind
- 29:51Speaker 2: of come back on the conversation because the director, Ridley Scott,
- 29:54Speaker 2: just a couple of days ago, was giving a talk
- 29:57Speaker 2: somewhere in England and his son was like asking questions.
- 30:00Speaker 2: He took questions from the audience and someone asked them
- 30:02Speaker 2: about what kinds of movies he was watching, and he
- 30:04Speaker 2: basically said that he's watching his old his own movies
- 30:09Speaker 2: because they're so great, because we are drowning, he says,
- 30:13Speaker 2: I think it's the quote, is we are drowning in mediocrity,
- 30:16Speaker 2: that only five percent of movies that are made or
- 30:21Speaker 2: any good. And so before I posed this question of
- 30:25Speaker 2: the audience, I actually like went back in time. I
- 30:27Speaker 2: picked a year arbitrarily from the eighties, and I sort
- 30:30Speaker 2: of did a very unscientific look at the number of
- 30:33Speaker 2: movies that came out of that from that year and
- 30:36Speaker 2: clocked them against what I would just very quickly deem
- 30:38Speaker 2: as being great movies. And the percentage rate is pretty
- 30:41Speaker 2: much the same. It was like a five percentage rate,
- 30:43Speaker 2: the same thing that really Scott was talking about, what
- 30:45Speaker 2: year did you go back to eighty nine? Nineteen eighty nine?
- 30:48Speaker 1: So you went back to nineteen eighty nine.
- 30:50Speaker 2: And I, according to the IMDb, there were at least
- 30:54Speaker 2: worldwide six hundred movies made that year. There were more
- 30:57Speaker 2: than that, but I didn't have enough time to keep
- 30:58Speaker 2: going and find so there were at least six hundred,
- 31:01Speaker 2: and I quickly identified at least about twenty that I
- 31:05Speaker 2: thought were great, which was a three percent rate. And
- 31:09Speaker 2: then I said, if we just doubled this rate, and
- 31:10Speaker 2: made it forty out of six hundred. That's still a
- 31:12Speaker 2: six percent rate. It's still about the same.
- 31:14Speaker 1: So you took Ridley Scott's theory that only five percent
- 31:19Speaker 1: of films made today are actually any good. You went
- 31:22Speaker 1: back to nineteen eighty nine and you tested it against
- 31:25Speaker 1: the films that were made then, and you determined that
- 31:28Speaker 1: basically it was the same percentage of good films, just
- 31:32Speaker 1: five percent made back in nineteen eighty nine.
- 31:34Speaker 2: Very unscientific view of it. I think it was just
- 31:36Speaker 2: there was more to choose from. So there are more
- 31:38Speaker 2: great films, but there's also hundreds of more shitty films
- 31:42Speaker 2: because movies were just such a bigger deal back then.
- 31:45Speaker 1: Right, all right, that's Hollywood Land. That's the rap party.
- 31:52Speaker 1: Make sure you're subscribed to Hollywood Land on Apple Podcasts, Spotify,
- 31:56Speaker 1: or wherever you get your podcasts. On Tracy, I'm talking
- 31:58Speaker 1: to you. Listen, guys, don't forget the question of the
- 32:03Speaker 1: week this week, which evil, spooky dark? What musical madness
- 32:10Speaker 1: are you digging into in October? I want to know.

- 32:17Speaker 1: eight and let me know, leave a voicemail you'll hear
- 32:21Speaker 1: yourself here in the after party. Send me a text.
- 32:24Speaker 1: I might read it right here, and I respond sometimes
- 32:27Speaker 1: too to the text. You might get a text late
- 32:28Speaker 1: at night. Who the fuck is this? It's me? I
- 32:30Speaker 1: don't know. Sometimes I do that, you know. Sometimes I
- 32:32Speaker 1: answer it here, Sometimes I answer it there. Who cares
- 32:35Speaker 1: one way or another? You're getting an answer, I think.
- 32:37Speaker 1: I hope we try. Listen if you want more on
- 32:40Speaker 1: the recommendations front from Zeth and I, and trust me
- 32:43Speaker 1: you do. You're not gonna want to miss out on
- 32:44Speaker 1: these recommendations. They're coming up right now in the exclusive

- 35:11Speaker 1: And well that's a disgrace alright. Pentagram's excellent album Relentless
