- 0:38in the region that could well affect us.
- 0:41Also, So, yes, that's all coming up.
- 0:43So do, stay tuned. But first as always, let's cover
- 0:46up the local news, and here's Nilesh.
- 0:48I mean, look, how are you going to thank each is department, and
- 0:50let's start with the Peterborough Phantoms again, and
- 0:53they're having a great season so far.
- 0:55And they enjoyed a perfect couple of days as they beat Prix
- 0:58weekend. Table toppers leads Knights home
- 1:00in a way to put themselves firmly in the race for top spot
- 1:03in the National Ice, Hockey League.
- 1:05National division, Phantoms first travel to Yorkshire on
- 1:08Saturday night and returned triumphant after claiming a
- 1:11thrilling. For Success, they then hosted
- 1:14the knights on Sunday. And once again, edged a close
- 1:16encounter as they won, 3-2 a result that saw the move level
- 1:20on points. With the Knights, who were
- 1:22replaced at the top of the pile by MK.
- 1:24Lightning mkr, one point better off than Phantoms and nights as
- 1:28it, as it has got incredibly tight at the top this weekend.
- 1:32The Phantom's. Traveled to Sheffield steel dogs
- 1:34before facing the bees, our planet ice, in a 5:30 p.m.
- 1:38Face-Off. The Phantom's were also in
- 1:40action last night, Right as they bmk lightning one-nil in the

- 1:48The return leg is next Friday 27th of January in a 7:30 p.m.
- 1:53face off, Peter Sports and it was a shocking, start for them.
- 1:57That left pitre sports with too much to do and as they failed to
- 2:01recover from and fell to a 2-1 away.
- 2:04Defeat at King's Lynn last Saturday in the National League.
- 2:07North Clash starts to match. His don't come much worse than
- 2:10the one sports made. So them gift Lynn to tappings in
- 2:14the opening Five Minutes. Sports did half the deficit.
- 2:17Thanks to King a Kingsland own goal, but were unable to force
- 2:21an equalizer. This Saturday is sees the
- 2:23turbines. Make the long trip to the
- 2:24Northwest to face Chester City. And here's our update from the
- 2:28city of Peterborough, Hockey Club has provided by David
- 2:31Simpson overall. It was a good set of results of
- 2:34this week. He says, the ladies want one a
- 2:37close encounter at the gate. A 2-1 over havering ladies.
- 2:41Has completed a completed back-to-back wins over
- 2:44strugglers Watson with a 6-1 of away.
- 2:46Win the ladies thirds ended Saturday to hockey, disappointed
- 2:50to draw with Cambridge Nomads. After being two goals up, the
- 2:55ladies fourths went down 3-2 after leading by two goals away
- 2:59to Cambridge Nomads, s the ladies fifths can't in to
- 3:03continue to enjoy their debut season with a 2-1 win at home to
- 3:07Pelicans thirds. We're both goals were taken by
- 3:10Sara Teasdale. The men's ones had an
- 3:13entertaining Cup game on Sunday versus Norwich City like the
- 3:17league game. It was a very close encounter
- 3:20with a 4-3 win for the men's first.
- 3:23The men s lost await a Saffron Walden. 61 the third's, keep
- 3:27producing the results with a 3-1 win over Cambridge City,
- 3:30fourths. The men's fifth fourth.
- 3:32Sorry. Also, beat Cambridge City
- 3:34opposition in the Vets variety winning for no away from home.
- 3:38The men's fifth, couldn't capitalize on a good display
- 3:41last. Week, losing 41, to promotion,
- 3:43chasing sneers, men's sixth went down a three to Cambridge Nomads
- 3:49thirds after leading to nil. Men's seventh, produced at
- 3:53Chairman's, team of the week performance beating Cambridge
- 3:56Nomads fourths, 31 meant, eigth went down to one to local
- 4:01Rivals, born deeping and looking ahead to this weekend.
- 4:04It's another one of full of fixtures with immense twos
- 4:08playing at home on Saturday the men's ones traveling to Instant
- 4:12on Sunday for a friendly and also the men's fourths and
- 4:15eights are also at home in the ladies comp the ones are.
- 4:20Why at Saint Albans and the 2's hosts folding, and the ladies
- 4:23Force fourths host. Cambridge South on Sunday, the
- 4:27under tent and under rates are hosting Cambridgeshire clubs for
- 4:30a tournament. And the men's over 40's, play
- 4:33the third round Cup match against Kingsland based Pelicans
- 4:38in rugby. And there's life in Peterborough
- 4:40lines yet as they Picked up their first win of the Season at
- 4:43the 15th attempt. The lions were twenty-four seven
- 4:47winners over fellow strugglers old laurentians to claim that
- 4:50elusive first success of the season.
- 4:53But despite the victory, they rain remain adrift at the bottom
- 4:56with - six points from 15. Games lines will be hoping to
- 5:01build on their rare win this Saturday but it will be a big
- 5:04ask as they are due to travel to title challenging old
- 5:07Northampton Ian's. Meanwhile for Peterborough our
- 5:10UFC they were left Strated. Buy a purse phone open of their
- 5:14fixture against old Northampton Ian's last weekend and we'll be
- 5:17hoping their fixture. Only will go ahead on Saturday.
- 5:22We will skip across to the Peter, but Royals, women's
- 5:25American football team and their Stars Jade heels and Tanya
- 5:30Dale's have earned selection to the GB.
- 5:32Women's American football team to contest the European
- 5:34championships later this summer running back heels and line back
- 5:38at Dale's enjoyed their first practice session with the Squad
- 5:42at the weekend after coming through a grueling trial, Dale's
- 5:45helped gb2, a silver medal in the world championships in
- 5:48Finland. Last year, the club are going
- 5:50from strength to strength and have been holding successful
- 5:53recruitment days. At their Breton base, the home
- 5:56of Peterborough, Lions Rugby Union club and on to football
- 6:00and Peterborough women. They face a fc, rushden &
- 6:03Diamonds girls in the quarter-final of the north
- 6:05hunts, a fake antique up on Sunday afternoon, which is at 3,
- 6:09p.m. kickoff and those your sporting headlines.
- 6:11Sweet, Japan and Canada, share busy week in sport.
- 6:14As always in the local on the local scene yet.
- 6:17Very much though. Plenty going on until flying.
- 6:20Yeah, Phantoms are flying. They're doing themselves and the
- 6:23city proud on the ice there and actually went on Sunday and
- 6:27witness their 3-2 win over Leeds nights, which was a really
- 6:31really gritty just performance. Bearing in mind, they were 21
- 6:34down against the league leaders to to Peg them back and then win
- 6:37the game 3-2. I'm sure they're grained much
- 6:40confidence from that as well, and And will hopefully continue
- 6:42that form Center going into this weekend.
- 6:44And for the next couple of months as they look to reach the
- 6:47playoffs, absolutely. And obviously, somewhere else,
- 6:49you would've been a would've been Port Vale on Monday night.
- 6:51Yeah, that was cold. That it was okay to witness Posh
- 6:58win under down Ferguson, his first game in charge on his
- 7:00return and a good away. Winner Paul out because there
- 7:03wasn't much in the table between Posh and poor vallon to gain a
- 7:07tuna when there is absolutely fantastic.
- 7:09Yeah, it's not really a happy hunting ground for us.
- 7:11We've Many a time, it's a difficult pitch to play.
- 7:14The atmosphere can be a little bit intimidating at times, but
- 7:17Posh handled that well, in the first half and second half
- 7:20scored 2 oz and answered goals. So to win to nil at Port Vale
- 7:24was a real morale boost and after the two-week break that
- 7:26we've had through purse payments and the FA Cup break as well.
- 7:30So yeah, it was encouraging to get back out there and Darren it
- 7:35was a competent performance. We didn't play brilliantly but
- 7:39what was needed was a clean sheet and and more importantly a
- 7:42win away from home because our a waveform has been very poor
- 7:45absolutely. And it makes difference of table
- 7:47because Portia back in you know I'm putting it Josh.
- 7:49Just It Right Touch of dollars. Yeah yeah that's obviously the
- 7:54goal operation playoffs. Now this season 21 games to go
- 7:57and we've got Charlton tomorrow, fingers crossed that match will
- 8:01be on. I know the pitch has been
- 8:03covered this week so let's hope the frost hasn't got under those
- 8:06covers and the pitch holds up. We played them on boxing day
- 8:10which is a 1-1 draw. So yeah, in need to be a
- 8:15positive results tomorrow because we're at home, we've got
- 8:17a decent home record this season.
- 8:20So and charting our Boyd they've been playing well since we've
- 8:23played them at on boxing day, but yeah, a home games.
- 8:25We've got to be looking within them.
- 8:27Absolutely. And then away at Burton on
- 8:29Tuesday again, another winnable game.
- 8:30Yeah. Yeah.
- 8:31Burton is our next away game and then we've got Portsmouth next
- 8:35Saturday at home and then the first Saturday in February, we
- 8:38travel to Forest Green. So, you know, to tough home
- 8:41games coming. Going up, but then to, on paper,
- 8:44winnable away games, but mrs. Peterborough.
- 8:45United, and you just - laughs. Yeah, Anything could happen with
- 8:49them. That's a sure.
- 8:50Excellent. And finally prediction for
- 8:51tomorrow chart times Charter not done one of them in a wild bear.
- 8:55Yeah, we've got to win, haven't way home?
- 8:57If we've got any desire to be reaching those players, we've
- 8:59got to start building momentum, building a run and a win
- 9:03tomorrow would be just the Philip absolutely.
- 9:05Any score protection for your eyes?
- 9:09Let's see if we keep another clean sheet and then the two Oh,
- 9:11hi Mom, that would be good. Fantastic today that to Burton
- 9:14will be full of confidence that yeah, definitely Berlin.

- 10:54You're listening to PP ask for. Welcome back to the PCR Sports,
- 11:08show with me, depan and Nilesh with you.
- 11:10Every Friday 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. on PC are sports a show for fans
- 11:16by fans, as well as keeping it, local and Regional with
- 11:19everything that we speak about. And this happened.
- 11:21This evening is no exception. Got Christine Sproul on from the
- 11:24living space organization. She's the Strategic lead for
- 11:27places and communities. Christine, welcome.
- 11:30Good evening. Welcome myself, thanks for
- 11:33having me. Do it was a pleasure.
- 11:34Now to thank you for popping by so good to have you on the show
- 11:37and exciting times that leaving sport from what we've sort of
- 11:41understood this week for our research and then obviously
- 11:43chatting you before the show. So firstly, bit about yourself.
- 11:47Really? What?
- 11:49Tell us a bit about yourself in terms of your involvement with
- 11:51living sport? You know, what is the role of a
- 11:53strategic lead for places and communities?
- 11:55It sounds sounds Grand. It does.
- 11:57It's a law. It's a long title.
- 11:59But yeah. I've been at Living Warfare for
- 12:01just over four years now. And I started off as a project
- 12:04manager on active new communities program but a living
- 12:08sport is all about supporting people to be active and to move
- 12:12in a way that works for them. So where the active partnership,
- 12:16we've been in existence since 2006 and the role that we play
- 12:20is all about sort of promoting the benefits of sport and
- 12:23physical activity and the role it can play in supporting
- 12:27communities to be strong. Helping people too.
- 12:30Realize the benefits that physical activity can bring to
- 12:33their physical health mental health, but also importantly,
- 12:37how it can help support some of those wider roles in terms of
- 12:42helping communities to be strong and helping people to connect,
- 12:45particularly poster covid. So, a lot of the work that I do
- 12:49in the communities team is sort of listening to local people
- 12:52trying to understand how physical activity can help them
- 12:55to be stronger. And the great thing is you know
- 12:58the Power Sport, it can be flexed.
- 13:00And so many Four ways. So for me, you know, I love
- 13:03being involved in this work because it's all about making a
- 13:05difference and understanding how sport can help other people tap
- 13:09see, sounds brilliant and, you know, they say you dropped out
- 13:11carries the words places and community, so it doesn't sound
- 13:15to me like that. It's a dead space job.
- 13:17No, that's good. Because it's much fun being out
- 13:21about rather than being stuck behind a desk.
- 13:22And we know that in order to, you know, support communities,
- 13:26it's about being out and about listening to people and
- 13:29understanding And what we can do to help others sore meet their
- 13:32own goals. So across the county we have,
- 13:36we've got a team of 20 individuals that work at Living
- 13:38Sport and our main sort of areas of focus.
- 13:41Our community's children young people and and health.
- 13:45And and how do you identify what areas or what place is and what
- 13:49communities to focus on at any one time?
- 13:52And how does that work? As you bring that together?
- 13:54Well, we've got for some key areas of focus, do a lot of
- 13:58work, particularly in Peterborough care.
- 14:00Italy and working with Community groups and looking at how we can
- 14:04support them to connect. Particularly post covid.
- 14:07We've also got areas of work where we work with local
- 14:11authorities across the County, Public Health, and various
- 14:15Partners across all six districts of Cambridgeshire and
- 14:19Peterborough. But we tend to go with the
- 14:21energies, so where there's a real energy and interaction from
- 14:25Partners to work with us. Then we like to work with them
- 14:28and we're also trying to focus. Saint those individuals that are
- 14:32probably been hardest hit by the pandemic very much around how we
- 14:37can support communities to move more in a way that works for
- 14:40them. And we know there's certain
- 14:42areas of the county where people are perhaps, less active, have
- 14:46less opportunities. So we're trying to open up those
- 14:48opportunities. Particularly tackle,
- 14:51inequalities support individuals that perhaps haven't had access
- 14:54to Sport and physical activity and seeing how we can adapt to
- 14:58meet their needs. Yeah, no sounds really good.
- 15:00I know about 50 months ago we had Simon Fair hold from living
- 15:03spot on. He was the CEO at the time but I
- 15:06think the they're just the I guess the show's a the
- 15:10directional certainly the Strategic view of the what the
- 15:12organization does change since he was on and it's not just the
- 15:17the bias of the time perhaps was towards just sport, let's say,
- 15:19but now there's, there's a broader agenda, isn't it?
- 15:22Yes. Certainly.
- 15:23I mean I think in the past and we also looked at the value of
- 15:26sport for sports sake, but now we're looking at the wider role,
- 15:29it can play. And we're doing more work,
- 15:32particularly with volunteer organizations Community
- 15:35Partners, and looking at the benefits of physical activity
- 15:38can play in terms of supporting people's, mental and physical
- 15:42health, but also the wider role in terms of social outcomes, you
- 15:46know how it can help communities to become more, resilient
- 15:50inclusive, and connected, and being able to look at working
- 15:54with organizations that perhaps we haven't worked with in the
- 15:56past and seeing how we can support their agenda help.
- 16:00Them to connect with their recipients and it's all about
- 16:04flexing physical activity, to support other people to meet
- 16:08their goals. Yeah.
- 16:09And how do you, how does the billing as well as an
- 16:11organization or you as an individual really build up that
- 16:14intelligence of what's happening?
- 16:15Because obviously, you work, not just in Peterborough Cambridge
- 16:17here as well. So how do you kind of work?
- 16:20You know, understand what's going on, where let's say, you
- 16:22go where the energy is flowing and what have you?
- 16:24But surely there must be some way you identify that in some
- 16:27audience. Do people come to you and say,
- 16:28oh, by the way, we're doing this, can you help or Do you
- 16:30just listen pick up a newspaper or the equivalent of what he's
- 16:34driving out the website and all listen to the radio and thing?
- 16:36I'll, yeah, let's let me approach that organization or
- 16:38that area and see what we can do with them.
- 16:40Yeah, it's really important to be at the table and
- 16:43conversation. So we work with a range of
- 16:44Partners across all six districts and our role is being
- 16:49out and about listening to local need.
- 16:51So we're involved in listening, listening conversations,
- 16:56Discovery conversations, trying to find out what information on
- 16:59the ground so that could be data.
- 17:02It can be insight and information that local
- 17:05authorities, Community groups, people are providing so we need
- 17:10to be in those places and then listen to what people are
- 17:14telling us about their place and seeing how we can come in and
- 17:16support them to meet their goals.
- 17:18Sounds good today, brilliant. And and I guess people like
- 17:22local council local authorities are involved in that and you
- 17:24mentioned the NHS earlier as well.
- 17:25Yeah. And the sort of community
- 17:28outreach they have, you know, in terms Capability so that I guess
- 17:32helps you as well working with organizations such as those.
- 17:34Yeah definitely we worked with a range of volunteer groups as
- 17:37well and other charity organizations across the county.
- 17:40So whether that's working with organizations that are
- 17:43supporting children, young people community groups can be
- 17:47disability. Charities Charities that working
- 17:50in there, such as age, UK, working with old age groups and
- 17:54and also, you know, statutory organizations as well.
- 17:58So it's full range. And in terms of your focused,
- 18:02the is the focus still, we kind of children and young people or
- 18:06do you work with adults as well now and those across the board?
- 18:09No, right across the board really, I mean, obviously
- 18:12focused around, I'm chilling. Young people supporting children
- 18:15to have positive experiences around.
- 18:17Physical activity is really important, so work the schools
- 18:21and colleges as well. But also working with
- 18:24organizations that are working with older people, you know,
- 18:28looking at the benefits that physical activity can I in terms
- 18:31of supporting public got long-term conditions and also
- 18:35the prevention of role, it can play in helping people to be you
- 18:38know, healthy and happy for longer.
- 18:41And you mentioned, you've obviously been in the
- 18:42organization but for years, I think you mentioned the right.
- 18:44So you would have been obviously just before covid it a little
- 18:48while before then as I've been a marked difference in instead of
- 18:51the community's attitude, since covid is, since we've become
- 18:54accustomed to covid, for example.
- 18:56And yeah. Well, how are things changing in
- 18:58terms of people's outlooks and into indeed?
- 19:00Obviously, what? Being sport do as well in
- 19:01return. Yeah, I mean, obviously that,
- 19:03you know, that time when everybody is locked in, I think
- 19:06obviously it was a very difficult time for in so many
- 19:09ways. But also, if we take the
- 19:10positives from that, in terms of that time to step back, I think
- 19:14it made people think about their leisure time and, you know, poor
- 19:18be encouraged to go out and be active together as a family on
- 19:22and being able to step back and see actually physical activity
- 19:26sport doesn't have to cost a lot.
- 19:28You know, you can go for a walk, you can go out.
- 19:30Is your family, spend time together, away from electronics
- 19:35and gadgets. Everybody has it's actually made
- 19:38people think a bit more about their leisure time I think and
- 19:42obviously, you know, even now it's a lot of people that
- 19:45perhaps were involved in community groups and activities
- 19:49for some people, they found it really hard to go back to those
- 19:51activities. So, we're working with Community
- 19:54groups to say, well, you know, can you encourage your, your
- 19:57group to get involved in a well-being walk?
- 20:00Pause. If you get involved in physical
- 20:01activity session together actually sport can help bring
- 20:04people back together to, you know, to connect to meet others.
- 20:08Did you find conversely? Yes, people may have been lost
- 20:12to a sport or an activity but if he found people coming back to
- 20:15us for perhaps as well, you know, after they were playing it
- 20:18at school or just wanted to take a new interesting new hobbies
- 20:20thinking, Now's the Time to do it after the covid pandemic.
- 20:24Yeah. Definitely I think, you know,
- 20:26some people perhaps used to be a member of a gym and not being
- 20:29able to go to the It made them think about other activities
- 20:32they could do. So it might have been going out,
- 20:34walking running cycling. Those sort of activities of,
- 20:37obviously, seen a real increase over the last couple of years,
- 20:41but I think it has made people step back and think about their
- 20:44Leisure Time. And actually, the benefits of
- 20:47going out just spending time away a lot, people work from
- 20:50home these days. So, going out at lunch time for
- 20:52a ten-minute, walk. You know, the benefits of that.
- 20:54In terms of mental health, taking a break.
- 20:57I think people see the benefits of that perhaps that they
- 20:59didn't. You know, if you're not used to
- 21:01doing something you don't know until you actually start doing
- 21:04it. And I think people see the
- 21:06benefits of suppose, it's that first step is always, the
- 21:08hardest isn't actually physically mentally tuning in to
- 21:11doing that. And once you start doing it and
- 21:13becomes a routine, hopefully that will become second nature
- 21:16to them as well, at that point. Exactly.
- 21:18And you know, Behavior change, it takes a long time and it's
- 21:21not going to happen overnight. So I think sometimes giving
- 21:23people the chance to try some different activities, see if it
- 21:27works for them and actually getting people to drive that
- 21:30Within Our local communities to be Advocates the same.
- 21:33Oh, why did you come out and try this with, with me?
- 21:35And then they can promote the benefits that they've, you know,
- 21:38receive from from doing a new activity and tell their mates,
- 21:42tell their family and friends and often.
- 21:44It's those local Advocates that will really have difference in
- 21:47terms of bringing other people along in their up in the place.
- 21:49We've seen that some from some of our guests actually that
- 21:51we've had on, for example, the Peterborough women's American
- 21:55football team, the Royals, you know, they've had people join
- 21:58the club and they've had ambassador's and there's
- 22:00advocates in their workplace, for example, and they've got
- 22:03their friends. Friends involved through, you
- 22:05know, having worked with the once adult.
- 22:06What do you do on weekends? Play American football, what can
- 22:10either go? You know, it's that sort of
- 22:11scenario Park Runners seem, you know, people join parkrun
- 22:14because of friends and family that go along on a Saturday
- 22:17morning at 9:00 as well. No definitely and activities
- 22:20like that. You know, that rely on
- 22:22volunteers actually getting one or two new volunteers, come
- 22:25along and they see the benefits that have for them, add to they,
- 22:28you know, parents get involved in some of the activities.
- 22:30Is that their children go to and then they get involved
- 22:32themselves and, you know, people make things happen.
- 22:35And it's, we're seeing a lot of new people get involved in
- 22:38physical activity, which is fantastic.
- 22:39Let's mention the park runn there.
- 22:40I think there has been interesting in generally
- 22:43walking, and sort of jogging since covid, because I think it
- 22:46was that that paid a lockdown where we were only allowed to go
- 22:49out once a day to, for a walk and people would normally go out
- 22:51for other reasons, went out and walk went out for walks and
- 22:54thinking actually it's not too bad after all.
- 22:56Let me go. Let me try and do this more
- 22:58often and I think that's the continuation.
- 23:00None of that as out, doesn't it? So, yeah and we've been a white
- 23:03involved across the county and helping set up health and
- 23:06well-being, walks and encouraging, local pool to get
- 23:09trained as walk leaders, they can set up a walk in the local
- 23:12area and being able to promote those walks to people that
- 23:15perhaps would don't feel comfortable get on their own.
- 23:18You know, if you go with somebody else a body, then you
- 23:20get your confidence. So I think setting up walks
- 23:23across the country as being really positive, as a really
- 23:26good spin-off over the last couple of years.
- 23:28Indeed, excellent. Thank you.
- 23:29Christine, that's Print, I will take a short break then, let's
- 23:32talk about some of the projects that you're doing in the region.

- 25:43show ever again. So if you're on holiday you can
- 25:45still tune in, right? Just been speaking to Christine
- 25:47Sprout, she's from living Sports and just been speaking about the
- 25:51work, they do and how they do it.
- 25:53And The communities and the people that they work with
- 25:56Christine's, let's go be more specific into some of the
- 25:59projects that you're doing and maybe more in the Peterborough
- 26:01sort of region as that kind of benefits.
- 26:04Probably most of our listeners. They were listening.
- 26:06So what other sort of key initiatives are taking place at
- 26:09the moment? Yeah well one of the things that
- 26:11we've been doing particularly in Peterborough is working with
- 26:13local community groups. To look at ways, we can support
- 26:17them to embeds of new activities with into their existing offer.
- 26:21So for example, in in Central City, City.
- 26:24We've been working, the likes of glasses and connect and
- 26:27supporting them to set up, some more sessions for Muslim, women
- 26:31and older people in the community as well, to for
- 26:33exercise classes and we've also supported and some local and
- 26:38exercise instructors to get up skilled, so they can expand
- 26:42their sessions as well. So we've got a lady from the
- 26:45Lithuanian Community, who set up some sessions for older.
- 26:48People are also working with we've worked with the sea.
- 26:53Community and putting up some sessions for boys, football.
- 26:59And we've also been working with, within Central Park,
- 27:04friends of Central Park, to help them set up some family play
- 27:07activity, which hopefully is going to kick off.
- 27:10But it's a little bit warmer on a Saturday in the.
- 27:14And then also we've been working with a range of Partners on a
- 27:18project called play zones which is in conjunction with the
- 27:21football association football Foundation, And we've been
- 27:24working with the likes of impart trust, Peter, a Lions Rugby
- 27:28Club, and hunts, fa Parkside, athletic, football, club, and
- 27:34active Hampton. And that's around bringing some
- 27:36new multi-use games facilities, into city of Peterborough, to
- 27:41open up more opportunities for young people to get involved in
- 27:44physical activity and also to provide opportunities for people
- 27:49that wouldn't necessarily normally access sport physical
- 27:52activity and must be quite So I think is that you mentioned, a
- 27:55few communities there and you know, there's a lot of diversity
- 27:58there. And and I guess when you
- 27:59approach a community, I suppose there's a bit of mindfulness
- 28:02about what the heritage of that Community is and what sports are
- 28:05popular in that Heritage determining, you know, and
- 28:09unless a for South Asian Community, programmable maybe
- 28:11Cricket, he's going to be more popular than than a football is
- 28:14in that sense. So it must be interesting.
- 28:16When do you have to do that sort of work and and that, you know,
- 28:19you come across such diversity and different types of people
- 28:21that appreciate different types of sports.
- 28:23Different levels. Yes.
- 28:24Certainly, I mean, you know quickest, you know, very popular
- 28:28in center of Peterborough and Cricket.
- 28:30He's have done awful lot, within the schools to open up
- 28:33opportunities for young, people, and particularly women and girls
- 28:36to play cricket as well. There's also a real interest in
- 28:40basketball as well. We've had quite a lot of
- 28:42requests as part of our facility, sort of consultation
- 28:47around basketball and FreePlay. So, people can come and play
- 28:50basketball, without being a member of a club.
- 28:52They can just turn up. If there's a whoo, I can then
- 28:54play but also other activities such as Nordic walking.
- 29:00There's been some some Nordic walking with in Central Park.
- 29:04We've had quite a few of the school's get involved in a
- 29:07project called Dragon's Den, where young people can pitch
- 29:11their ideas to our dragons living support and we listen to
- 29:16what they want in terms of after school clubs activities in the
- 29:20community. So I think be there too.
- 29:23Provide new opportunities for people that wouldn't normally
- 29:26access. Some of the traditional Sports
- 29:28is really important as well as listening to, you know those are
- 29:31already doing sport in how they want more opportunities.
- 29:34Offered locally. Yeah, no sounds pretty good.
- 29:37And in terms of obviously setting up a team for example
- 29:39that the goes into a community and works alongside that
- 29:42Community to you is that all from living sport you get
- 29:45volunteers from elsewhere. How does that?
- 29:47How does that sort of virtual team compiled yourself?
- 29:50Yeah. Well with in Peterborough we
- 29:51have my colleague, Steve harknett And I'm Steve his
- 29:54partnership coordinator that heavy focused on pita bread so
- 29:59he will build links with the local organizations find out
- 30:02what capacity they've got in terms of volunteers leaders and
- 30:05instructors to develop the sessions and he'll be able to
- 30:09provide them support. So, you know, do they need some
- 30:12support to identify funding sources?
- 30:15Are they looking for venues to get involved?
- 30:19Because I haven't got access to space at the current site.
- 30:22So I think it's being able to To meet with local people find out
- 30:26what, what? They'd like to do, what are the
- 30:28options, and where they need support.
- 30:31So the Steve can then upskill them support them.
- 30:34And once they're able to continue and sustain the
- 30:36activity, he can then move on to another group and support
- 30:39somebody else. So it's all about trying to
- 30:41upskill local groups to then sustain that activity
- 30:44themselves. So they don't have to rely on
- 30:46others to provide it which the funding come from that way, was
- 30:49that local stakeholders that have to get involved and support
- 30:52that those activities? Because there is a cost element,
- 30:54I guess it's an activity stuff people take part and of course
- 30:57so what you do as one of the active Partnerships across the
- 31:00country, we receive a fair amount of money through sport
- 31:03England, which is a national lottery funding.
- 31:06So we're able to support groups through and some of those
- 31:09funding streams. But at the same time, we support
- 31:11communities to go and look for additional funding.
- 31:14So, there are various pots across the county and we will
- 31:18support Community groups with applications so they can then
- 31:21find the right source of funding to help them.
- 31:23Set up a new activity. Now that's good in terms of so
- 31:28that you mention, obviously you you set up a thread an activity
- 31:32in the community and then you can hand it over to them,
- 31:34effectively to, to become more self-sufficient.
- 31:37And that, that could be in the form of them setting up a new
- 31:39sporting club or new activity Club in that area.
- 31:42To then obviously, then invite people to participate in that.
- 31:46Yes, that's right. And it is sometimes you might
- 31:49want to have a formal club and other times it might want to be
- 31:52actually a group of Here is being able to do something a lot
- 31:55more less structured. So for example we're trying to
- 31:58support families to get involved in playing with that with their
- 32:01children rather than just dropping a chill knocking and
- 32:05being a babysitting facility. I think there's a lot to be said
- 32:09for spending time as a family together.
- 32:11So if we can encourage families to play together, they get those
- 32:14parents involved. As volunteers then actually they
- 32:17can deliver that they don't have to rely on an instructor and you
- 32:21know, it might be the same time the parents want to do.
- 32:23It's like separately. I went from the children as
- 32:25well. So we're looking at all those
- 32:27offers, but certainly, it's about beer to set up activities,
- 32:31that can be sustained that, you know, not reliant on people
- 32:35having to, you know, put their hands in their pockets.
- 32:37Because we know that the, you know, the cost of living, people
- 32:39haven't got the disposable income they had.
- 32:41So we're looking at, you know, low cost or free opportunities
- 32:45for people to be active. Good.
- 32:49And in terms of you mentioned, obviously volunteers, would you
- 32:54say that if somebody wanted to volunteer with you can do, they
- 32:56necessarily have to come from the community that you're
- 32:58working with arcing. Let's say if I wanted to
- 33:00volunteer with living sport, could I just come along with
- 33:04projects that you're doing and then input into that?
- 33:06Or do I have to be part of the receiving Community?
- 33:08For if you don't mean, we're always open for people to come
- 33:12to us. If they've got a new idea of
- 33:13setting up an activity within their local, their local
- 33:16community because Only to be driven by local people, but at
- 33:19the same time, you know, we have people come to us that are
- 33:22really interested in putting site back into into their
- 33:25Community or they're looking for as far as an opportunity to meet
- 33:29new people and give something back.
- 33:31So we will then try and sign post them to somewhere in their
- 33:35local area. Sometimes we run events
- 33:37ourselves but very much working with the local community last
- 33:42year. We got involved in Peterborough
- 33:43celebrates, which was fantastic, multi, multi cultural Is Dance
- 33:48Arts and Sport and there were so many volunteers as part of that
- 33:52event and actually hopefully some of those people have gone
- 33:55back into their local area and looked for alternative ways to
- 33:58volunteer because people like to give something back and it's a
- 34:01great way to connect with other people as well.
- 34:05I was going to ask that you, how do you promote your services in
- 34:07the sense that obviously many people might not be aware of
- 34:10your existence, for example, or fully appreciate what you do.
- 34:12So, you know, you must do showcase events, like you
- 34:15mentioned there, Peter celebrates, this is one example.
- 34:17Where you, perhaps set up a stall, or some sort of
- 34:20promotional place that you that you can, then actively speak to
- 34:24people who come along and visiting, and obviously Spread
- 34:27spread what you do in that fashion.
- 34:29Yeah, I think it's important to, you know, be the places where
- 34:32people are. And so, rather than setting up
- 34:35events ourselves, we tend to, you know, find out where this
- 34:38local events happening and work with them to see what they need.
- 34:42So it could be, you know, a physical activity of pop up
- 34:45session, you know, from will take a long.
- 34:47A pop-up tennis and expand internet's family plague kit and
- 34:51then talk to people and listening and it helps us
- 34:54understand what people want and different ways that we could
- 34:58deliver with Partners. So we're always always looking
- 35:00for new ideas but also looking for ways to work with people to
- 35:04help them a spot, you know, spied something new so being at
- 35:07community. So being in attendance at
- 35:08somewhere like the yaxley festival for example, the
- 35:10willowfest you know it events that already put on where you
- 35:14can go and promote yourself if that makes sense as well.
- 35:17Activities. Which benefit the actual overall
- 35:19event as well. Yeah, I think you know from
- 35:21living Sports point of view, we want to be able to with you know
- 35:25go out there and look for opportunities to promote the
- 35:27benefits of physical activity. And, you know, often they'll be
- 35:30local events that are not necessarily a sport event.
- 35:34But there's a gathering of people and actually we're trying
- 35:36to reach new people. They won't necessarily come to
- 35:39us. I think we need to go to them
- 35:41and actually provide them the chance to pick up a racket play.
- 35:45Bit of table. Tennis do.
- 35:47That wouldn't normally do and that might then make them thing.
- 35:49Are you know it done this since school really enjoyed that
- 35:52actually, how can I find out something to do locally?
- 35:55And that's why you put them in. Touch with local clubs,
- 35:57potentially organizations. That be able to facilitate that
- 36:00particular sport itself. That they've got an interesting.
- 36:03That's right, a perfect accent. If anyone is interested in
- 36:06volunteering with living sport, what would they, what should
- 36:09they do? Or how can I get in touch
- 36:10directly with the organization in any way?
- 36:11Yeah, if they want to check out our website living Sport and
- 36:15then it's got who to contact And often will have opportunities on
- 36:19there. Like, so if we've got events and
- 36:21will promote those on there and people can check out our Twitter
- 36:24and Facebook pages if they'd like to contact us as well.
- 36:27Fantastic. So if anyone's listening wants
- 36:29to get involved, and what sort of time commitment, would they
- 36:32need is there? No, sort of, there's no struct
- 36:33in, there's no strict sort of amount of time.
- 36:36They need to devote. They can just do whatever they
- 36:38can around their own lifestyle. Yeah, I think the important
- 36:40thing is that actually, we need to be much more flexible with
- 36:43volunteering because people don't want to, you know, So I'm
- 36:47gonna do this every Saturday morning, you know, forever and
- 36:50ever but if people would like to get involved in putting sign
- 36:52back into their community and they've got some ideas and we
- 36:55welcome them, get in touch and tastic, sounds good, right?

- 39:13from leaving sport, talking about the community projects and
- 39:16the initiatives. They're doing in and around the
- 39:18Peterborough area. Just been speaking off there as
- 39:20well. While the while you've been
- 39:21listening to the adverts, some we mentioned new expansion
- 39:24actually about when you go into a community, obviously there's a
- 39:28diverse community in Peterborough, there could be
- 39:30language, barriers, that could be cultural differences, and to
- 39:33overcome people might feel slightly unnerving thinking.
- 39:37Well, who's this person from from X organization?
- 39:40Come to talk to me about this and Etc.
- 39:42So, how do you overcome any potential barriers that you
- 39:44might face from a sort of social perspective?
- 39:47Yeah, we're very aware of that. There's a full range of Rich
- 39:51diverse communities within within Peter, but and other
- 39:53areas of the county and it's really important to work with
- 39:57those, you know, people that have got a real role within the
- 40:00within that particular community.
- 40:01So it could be Community leader and advocate.
- 40:04So you know, people that understand what the needs are of
- 40:07that local community because then you can build trust within
- 40:10the community and listen to what the local needs are.
- 40:14So, you know, when we're working with a particular, Ation will
- 40:17always, you know, ask for them will actually, you know, what
- 40:20are the needs of the individuals and who you looking to Target?
- 40:23And, you know, how can we best support delivery for them?
- 40:27You know, with its timing if we're working with Muslim
- 40:32females, make sure we have a female instructor but asking
- 40:36them what their needs are because at the end of the day,
- 40:39people will listen to people within their Community they
- 40:42trust and they feel you know if they feel valued that they're
- 40:45there. Being listened to and their
- 40:49needs are being met, you know, we're much better off working
- 40:52with people who know those people best.
- 40:53Yeah, and most communities will have a central place when the
- 40:57weather is a place of worship. Whether it's a community center,
- 41:00something somewhere where there's some form of committee
- 41:03or some organization where there's pillars of the
- 41:05community, beep, individuals or groups of people.
- 41:07And those are the ones that are have the sort of most influence.
- 41:10I suppose it within that that woman is within that area of the
- 41:13committee's and the yes certainly I think it's about
- 41:15taking physical activity to that.
- 41:17To those individuals in their space, you know, so, you know,
- 41:20why can't you take table? Tennis to the mosque.
- 41:22You know, why can't you use the spaces in those Community venues
- 41:27to offer a chair based exercise for older people, so people can
- 41:31actually go to the place. They feel comfortable in and
- 41:33they're used to going to, perhaps to worship, or to have
- 41:36a, have a chat to people they know.
- 41:38Well, rather than having to go to another area of the city
- 41:42where they don't know and they don't feel comfortable and
- 41:44confident. Yeah, that's the big Asbury.
- 41:45You was also saying stuff. Of course, I'm you know, what
- 41:48would you send them to a gym? For example, if they've never
- 41:50set foot in the gym before, that's going to be in Irving for
- 41:52them, but to bring it back next door, effectively or on the
- 41:55street, then that's more of a practical location for you to
- 41:58get that engagement as well, then.
- 42:00Yes, early, Lenny, I travel can be such a barrier for people
- 42:04because you know, if people haven't got a car or that you're
- 42:07not living on a bus route, they're not going to travel
- 42:10halfway across the city and just to do a new sport.
- 42:13So needs to be on the doorstep. Really simple.
- 42:18And I'm starting to feel confident doing without putting
- 42:20another barrier in the way. And I think the other thing is,
- 42:23it depends on the guess, the, but it rightly that the maturity
- 42:27of our community, in terms of what I, what I mean by that is
- 42:30there's a lot of new communities in Peterborough that perhaps
- 42:32there are only been in maybe 5, 10 15, 20 years, where there's a
- 42:34legacy ones that perhaps been, you know, been here forever or
- 42:37certainly decades. So, there's that to contend
- 42:40with, as well, as in there, in terms of what, how confident and
- 42:42comfortable are people in and around the Peter area.
- 42:45Generally I think You've made the point around lots of
- 42:49different communities and together and I actually physical
- 42:52activity. Be a great way of bringing
- 42:53people together. You know, from a cohesion point
- 42:56of view and getting people to be involved in something really
- 42:59positive. And so I think, you know, being
- 43:01able to get community groups to engage in the first place, can
- 43:05be a challenge, but I think if we can use physical activity,
- 43:07the way to bring different, you know, corners of our communities
- 43:10together than that would be a really positive particularly for
- 43:14Peter Rabbit, other areas of the, the county, as well.
- 43:17Do you have any projects or have you had any projects where that
- 43:19that can happen in terms of perhaps you start a project in
- 43:21the in one particular Community, then another committee wants
- 43:24something similar and then you can create synergies between
- 43:27committee potentially or yeah, I mean, just from a from a piece
- 43:31where point of view, and we've been working with the East
- 43:34timorese, and they run a football competition, just for
- 43:37Christmas. And again, that was open for
- 43:40other community groups to get involved.
- 43:43And we've involved in a project in Central Park.
- 43:47And it's being led by and the latvians and lithuanians
- 43:50communities. And again, different Community
- 43:54leaders. We're looking to train up,
- 43:56volunteers to be able to deliver the sessions and be able to
- 44:00bring those communities together to play as a family's killer.
- 44:03Sounds wonderful, absolute brilliant.
- 44:05Just looking at you, your strategy, obviously the
- 44:07strategy, renewed, 21 has got a new strategy, 22 to 24 which
- 44:12replaced the previous one. And interestingly whilst the
- 44:16organization is All living sport looking at the sort of the
- 44:19pillars that you've got in that strategy.
- 44:21I don't think sport is actually mentioned per se, is it, which
- 44:24is, which is a Verizon. Is there a he can't with reveal
- 44:29corporate secrets on the air in that sense but is living sport a
- 44:32suitable brand name anymore? Good question, good question.
- 44:36I think you know, the past perhaps with used to be involved
- 44:39in working solely with sports clubs and looking at sport for
- 44:43for sports sake but now we're looking much more around you
- 44:46know. People are put off by the word
- 44:48of sport and it doesn't reflect their boat.
- 44:50But actually moving in a way that works for them might be
- 44:53something that actually is more attractive to them.
- 44:55So I think we're talking more about physical activity and
- 44:58movement to encourage different people to get involved in
- 45:03physical activity and to make it a bit more flexible.
- 45:06Yeah. And and I guess it's more about
- 45:10suppose Leisure, isn't it? Not just sport.
- 45:11It's about what people can do when they're not working.
- 45:14Let's say or attending to their Emily Etc.
- 45:17It's what they can do in their spare time where they've got a
- 45:19bit of downtime, what can they devote their life?
- 45:22To or their time to and and something that's enjoyable and
- 45:25engaging for them. And obviously it provides a
- 45:29physical social mental benefit to them as a lifestyle,
- 45:33definitely, and you was talking about Sport and uniting people,
- 45:37and it just triggered something in my mind.
- 45:39And I just looked up and Nelson Mandela coil, actually, and he
- 45:43said, back in back in the day suddenly sport.
- 45:47The power to change the world, it has the power to inspire and
- 45:50has the power to unite people in a way that little else.
- 45:53Does it speaks to youth in a language, they understand.
- 45:56And I suppose that epitomizes what you're trying to do within
- 45:59those hearts of those communities there as well, you
- 46:02know, getting into the mosque's the good whereas and the perhaps
- 46:05the underprivileged areas as well and giving them access to
- 46:07sport, so to speak. No.
- 46:08Definitely. And you know, sport has got the
- 46:10power to change lives and it can be so many different things to
- 46:13different people. You know, whether it's a vehicle
- 46:16to bring. People together help people
- 46:18reach their own aspirations or even just as a vehicle to help
- 46:22people get through the day to do something positive and, you
- 46:25know, touched on that the benefits of physical activity on
- 46:29Mental Health, as well. You know, we've been through
- 46:32incredibly difficult time the last few years and actually
- 46:34taking time to step away from a situation, you know, physical
- 46:39activity. Whether it's a walk or doing
- 46:41something even more strenuous can have a really positive
- 46:43impact on people's mental health and well-being.
- 46:45So I think it's looking Beyond Perhaps how we used to look at
- 46:48sport, how it can bring be, much, much wider and bring much
- 46:52more to people's lives and perhaps we want to thought it
- 46:54could. Yeah, absolutely.
- 46:55And just touching what Nina said about the the quote from from
- 46:59Nelson Mandela had brings people together.
- 47:01Again, the spoken language is no barrier in sport either, is it
- 47:04bigger? You can have people that don't
- 47:06speak the same language playing the same team or against each
- 47:08other or participate and all of a sudden they're all in harmony.
- 47:13Well yes, sometimes It can be a great deal of barriers and you
- 47:20know level that playing field get people in a different
- 47:23situation and you know the power of the power of sport can be
- 47:27very, very broad. But I'd like to think that we
- 47:29can do a little bit just to open more people's eyes into into
- 47:33what the benefits. Yeah.
- 47:34Absolutely. And in terms of partner
- 47:36organizations in Peterborough knows I think we spoke about it
- 47:38off there as well and also organizations, do you partner
- 47:41with with in Peterborough as well?
- 47:43And so, I think we're working with, and the likes of rpcvs.
- 47:47And Posh Foundation, Peter city council, new park, trust.
- 47:53And I've mentioned as a range of other sort of local community
- 47:56organizations, but also the school's, Peter City College and
- 48:01looking to build links with and Anglia Ruskin University as
- 48:04well. Hopefully, in the future and
- 48:06what sort of what what do those Partnerships look like?
- 48:08So, how do you work in tandem with each other?
- 48:09When you sort of partner up? I think it depends on the nature
- 48:13of the group and who they are. But often an It'll come to us
- 48:17and say, let we're really Keen to get involved in, maybe
- 48:20setting up a new activity, but we don't know how to how to set
- 48:23up, you know, where can we access funding?
- 48:27Where can we access and support to help us become a constituted
- 48:30Group, which obviously, put some on a good fitting to then, apply
- 48:33for funding to establish a new activity.
- 48:36So sometimes will be the best place to support them.
- 48:39Other times, it might be pcbs or the national governing body of a
- 48:44sport if it's a particular sport related, so, I'm often we can
- 48:48support, but sometimes will signpost who's best place.
- 48:52Fantastic sounds good. And finally, before you know,
- 48:54with time is catching up with us.
- 48:56Christina's a person, how did you come to work for living
- 48:59sport? What's your sporting interest in
- 49:01background? We've talked about the
- 49:02organization other communities but what about you as an
- 49:04individual? Well, I've always I've always
- 49:07loved Sports. I've played tennis badminton
- 49:09hockey for years and years and years and I started off coaching
- 49:15tennis. So I coach tennis.
- 49:16Or seven years full-time and then got bit bored with hitting
- 49:19a yellow ball over a net. It's and I worked for the LTA as
- 49:25counter development of saying, came Bishop of tennis and I've
- 49:28worked for sports coach UK in terms of Coach development.
- 49:31So sort of started as a coach got involved in sports develop
- 49:35myself. And then I worked for the tennis
- 49:37foundations National schools and further education manager and I
- 49:42was on the road a lot traveling around and I thought actually, I
- 49:44really like to get back home and More living sport.
- 49:48Providing the opportunity to open up and work in a slightly
- 49:52different way, but I think putting a local lens and seeing
- 49:56what matters for local people and how we can support people to
- 50:00make changes themselves, that's really sort of what for me.
- 50:03It's all about people and being able to support people to do
- 50:07what they want to do and you know for me being able to do
- 50:11something, I love in terms of promoting sport.
- 50:14Every day is a great job. Absolutely, absolutely fantastic
- 50:19story and Christine thank you ever so much and wishing you you
- 50:22personally and living sport continued success and obviously
- 50:25do popping some time again and keep us updated.
- 50:27But it's been an absolute pleasure this evening.
- 50:28Thank you. It's been a lot actually,
- 50:30pleasure being here. Thanks so much and I'll listen
- 50:32to the show in the future. Thanks.
- 50:36Fantastic pleasure. As always, thank you and me.
- 50:38Sir cheese dip a thank you. Enjoy Posh tomorrow.
- 50:41And good luck. Good luck to the Posh the
- 50:42Phantom's. Peter women piece for sports.
- 50:45Yeah. All our sporting clubs.
- 50:46Whether they're yeah wherever they're participating.
- 50:49Let's hope the weather doesn't get the best.
- 50:51The better of them. Absolutely Nila.
- 50:53She said it for me, I don't have to say much more.
