- 0:15Well Kenny conversation, just keeps on rolling and this next
- 0:20guest. Dear friend hero of mine.
- 0:26I don't want to I don't want to embarrass me but to me the great
- 0:29Bob Maybe the Bonny. Bobby, how you doing?
- 0:32I'm doing great Kenny. I hope you're doing well.
- 0:34Thanks for inviting me to be a part of this really excited
- 0:39about this. This is good.
- 0:40Thank you my friend. Well let's let's be
- 0:42light-hearted like you and I usually are, you know, we've
- 0:45raised so many races together enough of that.
- 0:48Nothing my mud all those years. So where are you at?
- 0:52I I think I see a Martinsville clock and I think is that your
- 0:57brother Terry in the background. So that's the Slow clock.
- 1:01It's needs a little TLC on it needs to be charged up, bring
- 1:04those down, and then back there is a me driving the 43 car.
- 1:10Oh for the Petty's, the fame Petty's.
- 1:12And this is a picture from our bicycle ride that I dropped and
- 1:16broke the frame broke the glass of the day.
- 1:17So, yeah. So we're at my Studio B, which
- 1:20is a just a storage building and I put up my brother, it was
- 1:24funny. Mark.
- 1:24I have all these pictures of Earl Pearson.
- 1:26Earl Pearson me and Dale Jarrett, Jeff Odin Harvick.
- 1:32Last time I run that had 18 car and either over at the other at
- 1:36Longhorn chassis. And my brother said, hey, I'm
- 1:38fixing to, we're fixing it, we sold longer chassis, we need to
- 1:41move all this stuff out. He said so might want to take
- 1:44down all these pictures because I had him in the hallway for
- 1:46years, back years ago just to make it look like you're
- 1:49something there, right? So I said, okay, so I walked
- 1:53outside and I went to my truck and I got my Dewalt drill, got
- 1:56my screwdriver bit. I walked back inside I Come all
- 2:00off, he come walking back there. He says, why didn't mean today?
- 2:03I said no, today's the day I'm going to fix up my studio be.
- 2:06So I took all my pictures and brought them over here.
- 2:09You shocked him because if yeah, you're like the Wallace is,
- 2:13you're a man of action. We don't wait, we do now.
- 2:17Yes, gotta go. Now, right wrap, wrap it up.
- 2:19Well, hey yesterday, I missed you at the SRX, you know, media
- 2:25day and yep, almost a lot of fun.
- 2:28You're talking about, your Gob there.
- 2:30One thing I see this happening in the racing world is you
- 2:36NASCAR drivers are getting much smarter with your money.
- 2:39We were in Joey logano's studio so I think he's looking at his
- 2:44future creating income when is racing life is over.
- 2:51I don't know everything about you.
- 2:52So I know that you and your wife are on the road, doing things.
- 2:57What what I do business? What other things are you doing?
- 3:01Yeah, well, that's a great question and people ask me like,
- 3:04you know, we're not have To fill out something as like, what's
- 3:06your job? Occupation?
- 3:07And I was like, oh God here we go again, race.
- 3:11Car driver fabricator catch-can guy.
- 3:16Maybe a sometimes mechanic, right?
- 3:18So yeah I mean and and I mean there's There's just a lot of
- 3:25things happening. And so, for me, I mean, the
- 3:27racing racing is I enjoy it. And, you know, we, you know,
- 3:35that's kind of our business on the side.
- 3:36I mean, we kind of, we make a business out of it, so that's,
- 3:40you know, that's a, you know, we yeah, we're we're having fun
- 3:45with that. So that, that business is low on
- 3:49the totem pole, but it's fun and we get to enjoy being together.
- 3:52Sir my wife and I and I get to go rice.
- 3:55So it's kind of feel I feel kind of guilty because I feel like
- 3:57I'm the one having all the fun. But anyway, so that's that's
- 4:00what that is and then so we have a our company is called breaking
- 4:04limits and I own breaking limits, probably 11 11 years ago
- 4:08and motor home. I think so he's 18, he's 82
- 4:24years old so I'm gonna go see him so so anyway, so so we own
- 4:29breaking limits for years and we started it back when I was
- 4:33driving the Petty's that long ago so it was kind of like
- 4:37Vision. Yeah, Jeff Denison and I were
- 4:40like or Jeff was like that, we need to do our own PR, instead
- 4:43of getting this other guy to do it that he worked for.
- 4:46And it's kind of, you know what, we just do our own, so we kind
- 4:48of just started it through public relations and General
- 4:51Mills was Our sponsor. So I still have the first
- 4:56daughter that break they gave breaking limits and so we did
- 5:01they hired us to do work for them and quick.
- 5:06Fast story is lower Raider. That worked there through
- 5:08General with General Mills works for us today so that kind of
- 5:11came full circle years later. So anyway so breaking limits, we
- 5:16grew it and we moved offices in Charlotte luckily we sold our
- 5:19offices in Charlotte right before we eat At the right time,
- 5:23we got rid of them and just because people were gone all the
- 5:27time, so nobody was there. So, when I met Kristin, she had
- 5:30a marketing company. So we caught it, we just merged
- 5:32them together, it makes sense, right?
- 5:33I mean, why should I be doing this over here?
- 5:35And you'd be doing the same thing over there, just we put
- 5:37them all together. So you know she had some clients
- 5:39of hers that she brought to the you know you know say we just
- 5:44put them all together. So throughout all that, you
- 5:47know, for for breaking limits we have we do pr Are we work for
- 5:54Universal Technical Institute? NASCAR Tech.
- 5:57So we do PR for them and then we have a client in IndyCar, are
- 6:02Electronics. We've had clients Ferrari, we've
- 6:05had colavito, olive oil, my wife's redone, some stuff for
- 6:12for Rahal and their group. And then, you know, we, we have
- 6:17smaller things that kind of float through out and in, and
- 6:20out through, whether So you know pizzas and fashion IQ limits is
- 6:28like a hospitality and then you represent drivers a little bit
- 6:32of everything. We do not represent drivers,
- 6:35it's more of a hospitality and Activation.
- 6:38So so what we what we do is you know the structures already
- 6:45built when we get there and then what we do is we fancy it up.
- 6:49You know, we have chefs and we have employees that Come in 8
- 6:53people come in, hire more local staff.
- 6:56You make sure food is prepared for, you know, 120 to 200
- 7:00guests. You know, at eight different
- 7:01events. And so it's last for about three
- 7:04days and we come in there with the Fine.
- 7:07China was real silverware, real food.
- 7:11I love the detail. Yes.
- 7:14Stuff. Yeah, real liquor, you know, no
- 7:16fake stuff and I mean it's all professional, you know?
- 7:19I mean it I say it's all top Ian high-end stuff and And, you
- 7:23know, we can do, you know, we can do smaller stuff as well.
- 7:28And we have, we did an event for for Pit, Boss grills and Arctic
- 7:37coolers other day. So we just did a one-off for
- 7:39them trying to get more business with them.
- 7:41So a lot of little things like that happen.
- 7:43But but so our company has grown and so we're trying to grow it
- 7:46and grow it and grow it. And yeah so we got you know,
- 7:49like I said we got probably seven or eight full-time people
- 7:52and And they're all over the place.
- 7:53We don't have an office. This is just a place for me to
- 7:55sit sometimes. So you're moving and shaking all
- 7:58the time and Bobby, you know, I have learned that fans and
- 8:04people have this Vision, they ask me all the time.
- 8:08What's your brother Rusty doing? I'm like, oh, he owns nine
- 8:11dealerships. Yeah.
- 8:13Well then Mike doing, oh, he buys property and sells it.
- 8:17Some nice people. Had this Vision that when us
- 8:19redneck Racers are done like, we live under a bridge.
- 8:23In a cardboard box or something, right?
- 8:25Right. Could happen.
- 8:26That could happen but true. Well, and, and you know, and you
- 8:30know this obviously, you know, for me and we run through this
- 8:32all this through a business, of course.
- 8:34But you know, the TV thing for me is a lot, you know, I mean,
- 8:36because they're not like what you did, but I do something
- 8:39every week, every week, every week, every week, something, and
- 8:42then, you know, at Christmas, it's, you know, I mean nothing
- 8:45for a couple months but you know, I mean, at the same time
- 8:47so that's a part of a, you know, part of when you say when
- 8:50somebody says hey yeah, what do you do for a living?
- 8:52That's like cool. How could I sold as yesterday?
- 8:58Would you learn from a life coach of mine?
- 9:01My CPA accountant is things I showed gar and, and he's my
- 9:06hidden hero. And I was telling him that I had
- 9:09these aches and pains and he said something that I want to
- 9:12share with you, and I will share with everybody says, do not let
- 9:16the old man in through, when you're staying young, because
- 9:20you're you're doing it all, you got Breaking limits, you're
- 9:23doing TV, you're running. SRX, you're running your mod,
- 9:28Charlie Mario's. So it's so Clint Eastwood is the
- 9:33on the came up with the. Don't let the old man in.
- 9:35Oh yeah, he told me that and Toby Keith wrote a song about
- 9:40that because he played golf with Clint Eastwood and Clint
- 9:43Eastwood said that on the golf course.
- 9:44Because he asked him said, how in the heck do you do this?
- 9:46You're 98, whatever years old and he said, you don't let the
- 9:49old man in so he wrote a song on that.
- 9:52So Three or four years ago, we were in Idaho going to bird
- 9:55hunting and we listen to it on the way because we talked about
- 9:58it with some group of guys who we talked about, not let the old
- 10:00man in. So yeah, there you have it.
- 10:03So my wife has to remind me because sometimes I come I will
- 10:05bitch and complain and she was like don't let the old man in.
- 10:08Yeah, it, you know, for the people that are listening, don't
- 10:11let the old man in means myself and Bobby or close to 60 and you
- 10:14get an ache and a pain. Don't let the old man and don't
- 10:18be oliv Bobby. Listen, let's let's change it up
- 10:21a little bit. I want to apologize something
- 10:24because Something you're going to go.
- 10:27What? But years and years ago when you
- 10:30were you and I were like the ultimate competitors.
- 10:32I just, you know, you were who you were in my target, I wanted
- 10:36outrun you and we were going at it.
- 10:39You called me out of nowhere. Probably 30 years ago or more
- 10:43and you invited me to a Jimmy Buffett concert and I couldn't
- 10:47go. But I was so shocked because
- 10:50there is this image Of you. You are studious.
- 10:55You are. I think you're a little shy.
- 10:57I think you're a little soft spoken, but I see it from your
- 11:01family on social media. You are the funnest wittiest
- 11:05person. I know of, I'm like, just wait
- 11:09there. Like, Herman.
- 11:09What do you laugh for all the time?
- 11:11I'm like, Bobby just said something funny.
- 11:15I know, it doesn't come from your dad.
- 11:16He's a badass. Right?
- 11:18Right. One side of you come from.
- 11:21You know, that's that's a Great question.
- 11:23I think you know, as funny as the story when we were used to
- 11:25be used to raise quarter midgets house five or six seven years
- 11:28old, right? And we go to the races in a 72,
- 11:30Chevy pickup truck, pulling, this plywood trailer, my dad
- 11:33built right and we're swapping just back in the back of it and
- 11:37we're driving along. And I remember my mom telling me
- 11:40because I'd be in the middle of the two.
- 11:42I was a monkey in the middle of the in the back of the pickup
- 11:45truck and under in the Shell of the truck, right?
- 11:48So you think about we're laying in the Shell of the truck,
- 11:50right? With the camper.
- 11:51And this is not Like a big camper.
- 11:53This is just the small shell, right?
- 11:55So I remember laying there and I would say something or do
- 11:58something funny and of course my dad be like, shut up.
- 12:02And then my mom. She told me, she said she tells
- 12:05people she goes and we say this day today.
- 12:07She said, yeah, they kept me around for entertainment.
- 12:10So, I was there for, I was here for entertainment.
- 12:12Now, I did I get it from my mom. I don't know.
- 12:14You know, Terry and I are seven and a half years apart.
- 12:17So like today's generations or, you know, my kids for years
- 12:21apart, they're totally different.
- 12:22Current so Terry. And I are different in some
- 12:24ways, not every way, but we're different.
- 12:26And I would say I got it from my mom, you know, more or less than
- 12:29my dad. I mean we sit there and we
- 12:31laughed she'll call me. The first thing she does is
- 12:33laughs. So I'm like, okay but you you
- 12:36appear so with me, you know, they ask my children.
- 12:43What is your father? Kenny, is he really like that
- 12:45all the time and they're like, yeah, but you, you come across
- 12:49very reserved. Yeah.
- 12:51But Or not. Hmm.
- 12:55I'm like why is my I'm like I'm like the postman man.
- 13:00The pope might go postal on you. My to some you might not know.
- 13:03You might think one thing, but it might be something different
- 13:06coming out of my mouth in your. Like, I told you earlier, this
- 13:09is not a life interview, or we're having fun.
- 13:14I think is awesome. That we do.
- 13:16Share a little common, our brother Rusty my brother Rusty,
- 13:19seven years. Older, you just said yours.
- 13:22Seven-and-a-half you're older, you're great brother, Terry
- 13:24Labonte. Both of our brothers, kind of
- 13:27showed us the way and we're like, hey, we want to do that.
- 13:31I still remember you and your Piedmont uniform.
- 13:33Is a crew member. Tell me just a little bit about
- 13:37that. Yeah, I mean, you know, I was in
- 13:41high school moved to North Carolina, you know.
- 13:43So, we're already here and moved to North Carolina and, you know,
- 13:47I'm in high school and, you know, I don't want to be in
- 13:49school, but I'm there, you know. Okay, I'm coming here.
- 13:52Why are you in school? I'm going to be a race car
- 13:54driver, right? I'm making, you know, if I can
- 13:56make sees, I'm good, right? I'm like, all right.
- 13:58Rhonda middle. So, so anyway, so after I was in
- 14:02ICT class, I think it was called.
- 14:03So at lunch time at lunch time, that go somewhere and go work
- 14:08right now. In class, I took Small Engines,
- 14:10I took cabinetmaking, I did everything I could to get out
- 14:13of, you know, the big, you know, history class or math and
- 14:17whatever. I will tell everybody.
- 14:19Now that would be great to do though.
- 14:22My you need more of that, right? Absolutely, that's a whole
- 14:24different subject. But anyway, so I would take and
- 14:26it was funny. We, I would take we would take
- 14:28the shop teachers car to the barbecue place at lunch time,
- 14:32he'd give us a key, we would drive barbecue place and we get
- 14:38barbecue sandwiches. We bring him back, his and ours.
- 14:41And we were like 17 years old. I might do.
- 14:42This is the going on 40, right? Oh yeah.
- 14:45So Cadillac, you know. So anyway, so I would go to work
- 14:48at Hagen racing. It was by Budweiser at the time
- 14:52And I would just go and do anything I could.
- 14:54So, I was sweeping floors. I mean, I would sweep floors in
- 14:57the afternoons and I would mop floors on Saturday when they
- 14:59were gone to the races. And then, obviously, the
- 15:01Piedmont thing came along and by then I had already talked myself
- 15:05into the, hey, I'm going to can, I can I do more right?
- 15:08Can I do, more can learn how to weld?
- 15:10I mean, I was probably the biggest if you ask anybody, I
- 15:13was like the biggest pain in the butt because I was like, hey,
- 15:16can I help you do this? How can I do this?
- 15:17I can I help you. Well, can I help you fabricate
- 15:19can't work an iCal on Rural centers.
- 15:21I will I was just um, Now, I'm sure I was that guy get away,
- 15:24you know? So as a peat as all that stuff
- 15:27went on, I learned how to do so many things.
- 15:29I mean, that was my college, right?
- 15:31So when I graduated from high school, I just went there to
- 15:33work and got a job there to work and made whatever little bit.
- 15:37And so, I just learned everything about race cars while
- 15:40I was there. And then that's the Piedmont
- 15:42days. That you saw.
- 15:43Hold on, hold on. Okay, look, you're acting like
- 15:47you're in school, you're going over here to work, but for the
- 15:50people that have a dream, okay, You're in school and you're
- 15:53going on a side job for a Nascar Cup team that is so famous.
- 15:59I mean, did you realize that at the time?
- 16:03No. Yeah, I don't do it.
- 16:06It was a side hustle. You know, it was just like, I
- 16:09mean, I had no idea. I mean it wasn't like, I mean it
- 16:15just wasn't what I would. I would have what today's world
- 16:19is it was just it was it was sure.
- 16:22I mean, when are you remember? Skip Manning.
- 16:24Oh yeah, when skip on the team there was in Charlotte and it
- 16:28was two cars in a garage, you know, and a gas station garage I
- 16:32guess so. So and you know so it was so
- 16:34small is big back then yourself? I mean Junior Johnson.
- 16:37Yes Wood Brothers. Yes the Petty's.
- 16:40Yes. But then everybody else was all
- 16:42in the middle you know all there.
- 16:43So, I mean, that was what we were probably supposed to win a
- 16:46championship because there was no way that we did it on what
- 16:50eight hundred thousand dollars or 400 or whatever.
- 16:52The number was, you know, so that we won the championship in
- 16:5484 but we were all there just working together and I learn so
- 16:59much and that was just my. That was my college degree.
- 17:01So yeah, you are one thing I've been lucky to know about you is
- 17:07one thing. You and my brother Rusty have in
- 17:09common is you figure everything out.
- 17:12I my Or you is a gadgeteer, you are great, Healy our career, you
- 17:18told me. Well I'm not saying you told me
- 17:20that but I know you are. You're very good with
- 17:23electronics. Is Terry like that or you that
- 17:27much different from Terry? You Oteri's the same in a lot of
- 17:33ways I would say I mean I guess I'll call him.
- 17:38Yeah man. What you doing and you know
- 17:40they're trying to figure, he's got his head in some, some type
- 17:43of thought process. SS of figuring out something.
- 17:45So, the deer feeders in there at the ranch or the cameras, he's
- 17:49watching, while his home and watching the deers and, you
- 17:52know, he's got to figure it out. Now, his figure out on Old Ranch
- 17:56was there filling up, you know, feed like tractor trailer full
- 18:00of feet right in the and thus, like The Silo thing, not Silo,
- 18:04but he weighed the bin. And so, finally, he told Kim, he
- 18:07says, I'm tired of this crap. So they found another Ranch that
- 18:10the people come out and fill up the bins for him.
- 18:12So, he is smarter than that. Way than I am because I'm still
- 18:15trying to figure out I spent yesterday.
- 18:18I finally push the button. I was like, I, in fact, I was
- 18:21talking to after you obviously, I didn't see you.
- 18:23And I was talking to Stewart, talking to Tony and I talked to
- 18:27the SRX media day at the media day.
- 18:30Yesterday, I talked to somebody else.
- 18:32I talk to my nephew and I said, on the way down, I suggesting I
- 18:34said you're going to I know you're going to hate me for
- 18:36this, but man, I was just fixing to push the button on the
- 18:39Sterling from here. And I just I just like Like I
- 18:44just don't know if I should do it or not and he just laughs
- 18:47because I've talked to him for like, two months about it and I
- 18:49said, my worry now is if I didn't push the button time, I
- 18:52won't get it when I go to the mountains next week and I said
- 18:54so. But at the end of the day, I was
- 18:56like calling people as I ordered poles, ordered them out and I
- 18:59figured out how to get it through the window, with the
- 19:02right amount of foam so that they won't let hot air in and
- 19:07blah blah blah. So that's so that was I mean
- 19:08that's like totally me. I'm like man I sat there.
- 19:11I woke up this morning at 5:00 going Okay, did I get that
- 19:15amount right? I don't know.
- 19:16I hope I did. I got four poles because that's
- 19:18over 14 feet. That's how tiny you know.
- 19:20So that's me. Yeah, it's just how I am two
- 19:22years ago you and I are talking. You're like man I got a camera
- 19:27on these deers out the back of your house.
- 19:31Yeah you still doing that. Is that therapy like watching?
- 19:35Dear, I don't know the camera the Dern the strap rotted.
- 19:41So now we just look at look through the binoculars.
- 19:43Hitters in. Just look at this load is
- 19:45enough, is not too far away, but it's like that's your for the
- 19:48fans that are listening to Bobby.
- 19:50They know you as the number 18 Interstate guy, but this is good
- 19:53stuff. So, yesterday, I mean, two days
- 19:56ago. So I'm in my motor home and I'm
- 19:59like my storage buildings. Not air-conditioned, it's here,
- 20:02it is, but not outside. You can't stop.
- 20:06It's like know. So so my motorhome gets hot and
- 20:08all the, you know, all the stuff in it gets like weird taste in,
- 20:13you know, like Like if you have cough drops, you know it gets
- 20:16kind of like you know, things get different.
- 20:19The older they get. Yeah.
- 20:20Someone like man, I don't like stuff.
- 20:22Going bad, your wine your celebration.
- 20:24Yeah. So anyway so I go to Home Depot
- 20:26and I text a guy and I think this is what I need.
- 20:29Yeah that's it. So I got it and I put it inside
- 20:31air conditioner, right? So I got a vented from the
- 20:33outside but all the stuff around it.
- 20:35And so now it's like, 71 degrees because I know that because I
- 20:37have an app on my phone, that tells me the temperature inside
- 20:40of it, the agile have. I don't have I didn't I couldn't
- 20:43afford Hi, the Mark Martin motor home.
- 20:45So I got one that I've converted into activism on hard mode.
- 20:49You know. March Motors got to be three
- 20:50million or more more. Yeah, for sure.
- 20:53I love that loves it. I love that for him.
- 20:56So you know, as we as we talk about what you're up to, I
- 21:01remember my very last day at, you know, NASCAR on Fox.
- 21:09I decided that I'd had enough. I'd been there 15 years and
- 21:12everybody at Fox was Was wonderful to me and they had me
- 21:16in and they said we want you on the desk for your very last day.
- 21:22Steve Craddock did gave me a really nice plaque.
- 21:25And as I was leaving, I just did a small segment.
- 21:30They were saying goodbye to me. And there you were.
- 21:32And I remember, I told you, I said Bobby.
- 21:35I said you are one of the greatest NASCAR drivers of all
- 21:38time. I said tell these people when
- 21:40you get on TV tell them what you know I've been watching you.
- 21:46Your lot of fun to watch. You just recently were in the
- 21:50booth and that was a big deal. Tell me about your TV.
- 21:57I mean I know it's a job like that.
- 21:58I think it's a hobby because you don't need the money.
- 22:01What is this whole TV deal about for you?
- 22:05I can remember back. I don't know.
- 22:06Who else driving for somebody asked me that Rich.
- 22:11Phoenix one time. They said, hey man, would you
- 22:14ever want to do TV? Of course, you know, I mean,
- 22:16I've always been more friends with the camera guys, and people
- 22:19behind the scenes as a reporter, you know, it's just, right.
- 22:22It's just kind of how I roll, right?
- 22:24So anyway, so somebody asked me to say, hey, would you ever want
- 22:26to do TV? And I was like, absolutely not.
- 22:29There is never want to do that. Look at those guys.
- 22:31Why would I want to be like that?
- 22:32I'm gonna be a racecar. I'm like, yeah.
- 22:34So, So, so as it as it turned out, I think NBC asked me if I
- 22:41would do a like, a, you know, go to Connecticut, I guess.
- 22:46And kind of like, do do something.
- 22:49And, you know, just see if you, you know, see if it's worthwhile
- 22:52or whatever. So, I did it, I did that for a
- 22:54little bit, you know. I was like, that's kind of fun.
- 22:56So obviously, the foxtail came out came about and through
- 23:00Danielle Trotta, actually. I think she's the one that
- 23:02probably put the, my work, my name and Much easier.
- 23:05Credit for somebody and we went down there and did like an
- 23:09interview show, right? And so I was like, you know, who
- 23:14knows? They'll call me back and they
- 23:16did. So it's been game on ever since.
- 23:18It's not like been five years ago.
- 23:20So, but I view it is. It's almost like it's a not
- 23:26therapy, but it's like to me, it's like getting a race car.
- 23:28Okay, it's getting prepared for a race in a lot of ways.
- 23:32And so, and how I think about, Out.
- 23:35It is you think about a five gallon bucket, right?
- 23:38And there's, I've got five gallon buckets.
- 23:40I got breaking limits. I've got Racine, I've got this.
- 23:43And I got that. So and if I'm not racing, how
- 23:47can I fill up the racing bucket with something?
- 23:49You enjoy, right? Because there's a, I mean, I
- 23:53could probably plant a garden made learn about that, right?
- 23:56I could probably, you know, you do anything, I can do whatever
- 24:00you want to do, right? But to me, what happens is the
- 24:03TV. Thank for me.
- 24:05The way I look at it in a way, I feel about it in a way.
- 24:07I way it comes about for me is it's like hey this is gets my
- 24:11juices flowing because there's, you know, it's, you know, I
- 24:15mean, I consider it, you know, pressure, I consider it.
- 24:19It's live. Can't Screw Up and do the best
- 24:23you can. So if you had a race car, you
- 24:25know, hey is live in front of people, you got to go out there
- 24:28and do the best you can. You can't screw up.
- 24:30So to me it's the same type of like getting strapped into a
- 24:33race car and butter, the racing try.
- 24:35Try to just be the best you can write.
- 24:38And so I kind of look at it like that because even though I've
- 24:42had people say man you come across so you look like you're
- 24:45pretty laid-back. I'm like my only back as you
- 24:49think but that fills up my you know my juices as far as like
- 24:55hey I like you know I mean this is not going to Rockingham and
- 24:59racing but it's also like I get to do this and it's fun, you
- 25:03know, II totally enjoy. I totally enjoy the pressure of
- 25:06it. I totally enjoyed the hey, it's
- 25:09live and we're going to do this and we can rehearse, or we can
- 25:12just run with it, you know, I mean, it's so different and so I
- 25:16view it like that and it is in and then you think about the
- 25:19team aspect of it. So everybody there, you know,
- 25:22makeup directors people that are so there's so many people there
- 25:28that put it all together and their team right there.
- 25:30Li raced, right? Yeah, and so there's your race
- 25:34team, you know, And you appreciate again like so much
- 25:38that they put into it. So you're on the phone call and
- 25:40you're like somebody speaks up and they're going to work as
- 25:43like I never thought about that, you know?
- 25:45I mean, so anyway and to me it just it's a it fills up my
- 25:48excitement bucket of when I'm, when I can trace.
- 25:52I mean that's exciting for, it's exciting for me to be able to do
- 25:54it. Yeah.
- 25:55So you have breaking the limits, which is your company you're
- 25:59doing TV. And one thing that it shocked
- 26:04me, Ago and I know a lot of people don't know it, there's a
- 26:08big dirt racing world out there super late models and you
- 26:14started Bobby Labonte. Not not a dirt racer and your
- 26:19brother Terry Longhorn chassis. One of the top dirt chassis in
- 26:25the world right now Superman, Jonathan Davenport last year. 12
- 26:30million dollars. What did you that?
- 26:33Just shocked the ever living? Crap out of me, the bottle
- 26:36Bonnie's owned. Longhorn, I know you sold it.
- 26:41How come none of us knew about that?
- 26:43I mean is everything you do Under The Radar?
- 26:46Your name wasn't even on it just Longhorn.
- 26:48Yeah. Right right.
- 26:49Yeah. You know I mean it and how all
- 26:51that really you know, it was trust me, I was at Talladega and
- 26:56okay. Jonathan.
- 26:58Jonathan Sherman says hey let's go to Talladega.
- 27:00Short track work for gifts, right?
- 27:02So we go there and he knows our old Pearson.
- 27:04I'm like, I don't know who Earl Pearson is, you know, I have no
- 27:07idea who are appreciates, right? Great.
- 27:09Great. So, I I go there.
- 27:11Hey, how you doing? So we talked a little bit so
- 27:13this is the fall race, right? So as time goes on, we go to.
- 27:19We talked a little bit on the phone and he comes to the
- 27:20Daytona test. Probably in December, maybe
- 27:22January. Right?
- 27:24So he comes down from Jacksonville and we have
- 27:26conversation together and blah blah blah so then I'm not sure
- 27:29how it all when I did it but I bought the team that he was
- 27:32driving for so I bought a dirt Late Model T.
- 27:36You know of course Tony's got his Elder think NASCAR money.
- 27:40It's a joke. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 27:48So so yeah. So anyway, so we so I bought the
- 27:52whole team Lock Stock and Barrel employees and everything, right?
- 27:56So Jason, Matt Divine came with it, right?
- 27:59So they came up some from done North Carolina and moved up to
- 28:05my shop that I had and race out there for around about five or
- 28:09six, seven, eight years, Whatever.
- 28:11And we started, we were buying chassis and Earl.
- 28:15Always lonely, like the one we had five sitting there, but one
- 28:18of them was the best. I was like, why don't we build
- 28:20our own? You know, so Justin, he's the
- 28:23Justin is the main part of this. So, so he was racing a little
- 28:27bit and Terry son, his wife Terri Stein, his wife Miranda
- 28:31had breast cancer. So it kind of curtailed his
- 28:34racing part and she's obviously great now.
- 28:39But you know that Took a year off of like, hey, I got to, you
- 28:42know, do what you got to do, what we have to do, right?
- 28:45So he wasn't racing as much. So we said well, we build these
- 28:47cars, right? So we had a jig, I think the old
- 28:51shop and we started building cars and I'll never forget.
- 28:55So we built cars. We were it was awful.
- 28:56You know, they were terrible. So We had, you know, we started
- 29:03building, you know, getting better cars, I mean to learn you
- 29:06learn a little bit right? Every time you build one, you
- 29:08learn something right cut cut well so yeah so it wasn't
- 29:15overnight. So I've never forget, Justin
- 29:18called me one day, he says, hey Uncle Bobby.
- 29:20He said, we sold four cars today.
- 29:21I said, damn, yes. And that's pretty good for cars
- 29:24today. Yeah, it's I said that's great.
- 29:28He said, you know, we sold for cars last.
- 29:30Year in one year 365 days, we sold for cars but they finally
- 29:34you know they evolve them and Earl you know to use the crash
- 29:39test dummy for say, you know trying I'm trying this trying
- 29:42that and you know, I mean so it just kind of evolved and so you
- 29:48sell for cars and you learn more stuff you sell for more, you
- 29:51learn more from the people that buy them and then you learn more
- 29:55and it grew and grew. And I think we had it for like
- 29:5810 years, maybe 8 or 10 years. Yes and just sold it so so
- 30:02Terry. And I and Justin were, you know,
- 30:04we're all, you know, in it together.
- 30:07Terry shop started, the Thing, Justin was always involved.
- 30:11And so we all were in it together and it just, I mean, I
- 30:15don't know. I called Justin one day because
- 30:17I saw where they built like number 800 and I said just
- 30:21summarize I would I wish I'd have known.
- 30:23I'd have ball. I'd have bought that car just so
- 30:25I can have 800. He said that's alright.
- 30:27He said already sold it. I saved you some money.
- 30:31You know, I think for the people that don't for me, dirt racing
- 30:37saved my life. So when I, you know, we all had
- 30:40our business, I had my rental properties.
- 30:42You got breaking limits and we're all you can Jive and we're
- 30:45doing Wallace. What are you doing?
- 30:47You know, and of course some people.
- 30:50I'm a look. I'm much more mouth your than
- 30:52you. So people here you've always
- 30:56been a gym but I mean you're this hidden diamond.
- 31:00And everything you do does good. And, you know, I just want to
- 31:03give you an attaboy. I mean Longhorn chassis right
- 31:05now is, you know, I know you sold it but it is the number one
- 31:09chassis for dirt, super late models and well, let me just
- 31:14keep keep Steve, Steve arpenaz, you know, bought it.
- 31:19He and his group of people and you know how we met Steve.
- 31:22How I met Steve Wright or into meeting, but many indirectly
- 31:26through you the time when he got hurt in evolution Sure that we
- 31:31flew back to back to Minnesota to the my God okay.
- 31:36Got to tell that story real quick let me tell it.
- 31:38So yeah I'm learning how to race dirt but I'm doing good.
- 31:43Put the effort into it, I win one night, at Volusia
- 31:46100-something cars, I'm like oh my God I want to race it was a
- 31:49big deal and I became friends with this Canadian named Steve
- 31:53arpan in. He kicked my butt more than I
- 31:56kicked his butt. He was a legend.
- 31:58Well, so the next year, he's taken the radiator.
- 32:01Hose, he's trying to cool his car down in the radiator.
- 32:04Hose blows off. This is when you're using hose
- 32:08clamps. You know, a lot of people still
- 32:10use hose, clamps upper radiator hose, blows off and burns him.
- 32:14Bad now heat, he's burnt so bad, he's got to get up north and I
- 32:21thought of you because you had an airplane and so you're
- 32:25telling me that's how it started.
- 32:26Kind of well. That's not how it started.
- 32:29That's how I knew Steve arpan from day one.
- 32:31Yeah. Right.
- 32:32And you know, so is time as time goes on, you know, he you know,
- 32:38he killed him. Yeah.
- 32:40Yeah. Bought that and I mean you know,
- 32:42nothing that matters but I thought it was cool because I
- 32:44mean you call me, it was late at night.
- 32:46It was right after it happened, I guess.
- 32:47And I was like, yeah, me called Tim.
- 32:49Let me call Tim and Clyde and see if I can get him ready to
- 32:52go. And we took him that night.
- 32:54Maybe you're the next morning and flew him to many skin.
- 32:58We make skins peeling off the kid.
- 33:00It was that type of burning. I mean we gotta get him to a
- 33:02hospital in Daytona. So I got a correct you on one
- 33:06thing is that for everything that looks good on paper or went
- 33:10good? There's a lot of for didn't go
- 33:12good Bobby there. I guess this I can I can vouch
- 33:16for I can vouch for those days. I'm like there's a picture over
- 33:20here with a sponsor on it than ever paid.
- 33:23Right. We're on Urkel's car.
- 33:25We thought hey that's going to be big deal them never Say, you
- 33:29know what I mean? So I had I have more deals that
- 33:32didn't go good as many deals that have gone good.
- 33:35So that is part of life. I think.
- 33:37So, yesterday there was a great promoter up here in Jacksonville
- 33:41Illinois, friend of mine, not a good friend, but a friend.
- 33:45Kenny daps him, he did something that.
- 33:48No, promoters ever done. He had finally had enough and it
- 33:52shocked me because I mean, Kenny I don't I didn't know he was
- 33:55like this, but he did a justice to all Promoters business
- 34:00people. What he did is he says you know
- 34:02he says I feel like it's one of those days.
- 34:05He said so on Saturday night in Jacksonville Illinois little
- 34:09bitty quarter mile race, her lat really good-looking crowd.
- 34:13And by the time he gets done with this paragraph, he had lost
- 34:17$300 that night. But he sold hamburgers and
- 34:21cheeseburgers and he had some Billboards.
- 34:24So what you're telling me is what I already know, but I want
- 34:26the fans to know people go all, man.
- 34:28Then stands were packed but he had 410 Sprint cars.
- 34:32He had to pay them a lot of money.
- 34:35The actual race itself, lost money but the only way made it
- 34:40was from selling food and billboards.
- 34:44And are you telling me? I know you're telling me that I
- 34:48just want the fans to know and the people to know that's
- 34:51business. Yeah.
- 34:53Yeah, that is that is a part of this business, you know.
- 34:56That's that is for sure. You know, I built I have I get
- 35:02reminded every now and then I built this quarter midget track
- 35:04in Salisbury that's a 501, c 3, it's not Mill Bridge.
- 35:07We don't charge people to come in and I mean, it's, you know,
- 35:12it doesn't make any money. It doesn't go under and your
- 35:17brother might call me about today, actually, but for the
- 35:20real estate part, you know. But so Is a real estate Guru.
- 35:25Yeah, right. I figured that out after about 3
- 35:27seconds. So yeah.
- 35:29So I mean so you know I mean so I mean if I could do it over
- 35:34again, I'd do something different with that, you know?
- 35:36I mean, God, I do a different plant, right?
- 35:38So but yeah, I mean in in, in in all kinds of business, I'm sure
- 35:42it's not just racing but you know, race promoters and drivers
- 35:45and owners and I mean, you know, they're you do you know things,
- 35:48things have happened. Things happen that you, you
- 35:51expect that To work out. Good.
- 35:54Sometimes they don't, right? So it was a long one chassis,
- 36:00the one of the top, your top dirt, I mean this is Mega
- 36:05company and you want to did it turn out in the black or was it
- 36:10always black? Red black red.
- 36:11I mean, did you I mean do good financially.
- 36:15I mean it did good, you know, it did.
- 36:20Yeah. Yeah.
- 36:21I mean in it was, you know, but you'd always have to, you know,
- 36:26you'd sell cars and you'd buy equipment, you'd sell cars you
- 36:29my equipment, you know, sort of you're always going back again.
- 36:32What is a warrior? Yeah, I mean and you know, you
- 36:34start up more parts and then you got that inventory and then you
- 36:37sell and, you know, so I mean, it was always bumping on the
- 36:40good side, you know. But you know you're always you
- 36:42weren't nobody was just taking it all in and talking it was
- 36:47just, you know, it was just bumping its way up.
- 36:50Farm good at the end but, you know, it was still for Justin
- 36:54that worked every day at a time. He's the one that did the labor.
- 36:57I didn't really think we just tweeted about it, you know,
- 36:59Zoe's simple for us other than other than the investment to
- 37:02start. You know, maybe I should ask
- 37:05your brother Terry but oh so Justin he's your nephew he
- 37:10tarries son. I thought it was going to be a
- 37:14race car driver. Didn't he?
- 37:15Win Chicagoland or somewhere? Nashville.
- 37:18Yep. Once you heat we did.
- 37:24So, the whole thing you nose at the longhorn was out ended up
- 37:28being a Terry. The shop that we raised our
- 37:30Busch cars out of years ago. Same place.
- 37:32Right? So went from this first brand,
- 37:35new building I raced are erased David Green race might cope
- 37:39race, Justin raced and you know, obviously again it's the world
- 37:47that's, you know, I mean not You know sponsors and Deals World
- 37:52chains you need more money. Yeah yeah and so there we were
- 37:56going through that I mean in Coast Guard was there and then
- 37:58you know they're going to go somewhere else and so you have
- 38:01all that you know I mean you know how it is I mean yeah and
- 38:05it just you know not not done always work out perfect for
- 38:09everybody but but again Justin you know transition to some dirt
- 38:14racing and you know I don't know if I got him involved in that.
- 38:17Maybe I did but he has a little mini sake.
- 38:19Run Madison. It's and you know I mean just
- 38:21just, you know, I got open it just like, yeah, just like we
- 38:23did. So his son, his son won at
- 38:27Talladega, this weekend and the quarter midget race, you know,
- 38:32be rookie. I think it would be plate,
- 38:33rookie little Honda. So anyway, he's moving up.
- 38:36So anyway, so I mean, you know, it's obviously our life but yet
- 38:39for Justin. It was, he one Chicago?
- 38:41I remember we were going to do an appearance somewhere as I get
- 38:43out there and it was like, hey Justin, what Chicago does like
- 38:48What what really? Yeah I didn't see that coming,
- 38:54you know I mean you figured a top 10 top 15 but not a win, you
- 38:58know. So but yeah I mean but yeah
- 39:00things and then you know obviously like I said sponsors
- 39:02and you know our team you know I mean it was harder for you know
- 39:06at the time Labonte racing over Childress Racing over, Roush
- 39:10racing over hit you, no other these.
- 39:12These teams are not going to be like we were at one down not
- 39:16like we were at one time with Carl, why?
- 39:18A core building our Motors. It was all of a sudden you had
- 39:20to be all roush's cars, all of Hendrick cars, all of whoever
- 39:24you know all the are, you know, all those big teams and you know
- 39:27that's what he got kind of caught up in that too because he
- 39:30didn't go drive for somebody else that had more money.
- 39:32We were just trying to do it out of, you know, family.
- 39:34Family reason. I find it really interesting
- 39:37that my brother Rusty his boy Steve.
- 39:42My brother, Mike, his boy Matt. And I'm a tell you I love them
- 39:45both equally but met my brother Mike's boy, man.
- 39:48Is incredibly talented and was winning down at New Smyrna
- 39:53during speed weeks. And I'm in Victory Lane with him
- 39:56in the late model stocks in order, super late model, Stevens
- 39:59win. Even, you know, wins.
- 40:01And then all of a sudden, I'm just kind of comparing this to
- 40:04Justice. Like one day, they said, I'm
- 40:06out. I'm not going to race in our
- 40:08day. I'm not speaking for you, but
- 40:11I'm saying in my day, I beg borrowed stole.
- 40:16I was going to be a race car. Driver come hell, or high water.
- 40:18Water. And it seems like and this is a
- 40:21compliment. A Justin am at Mike's.
- 40:25Boy. They just send them.
- 40:27It's just ridiculous. I'm going to do something else.
- 40:30Is that a fair assessment? Yeah, I don't know that coming.
- 40:33I think Justin was one his choice.
- 40:37It was handed to him. Like yeah, we're you know, we're
- 40:40we don't have a sponsor. So what are you gonna do?
- 40:42You're right. What you're supposed to say.
- 40:44Hey, I'm going to do something different.
- 40:46You know, we're going to salute right now.
- 40:50So yeah. So there's that's the, you know,
- 40:53that that's a little bit different in some ways but, you
- 40:55know, but but I think your point and and what we did probably Ten
- 41:02years prior to that. It was a little bit easier, beg,
- 41:05borrow and steal. And then for him, it was harder
- 41:08to make Barn Steel on to that, to get to that level, because
- 41:12you can go run a Xfinity car Busch car.
- 41:16Still very cheap when Justin was doing it so, but you can run
- 41:19late model a lot cheaper. Yeah.
- 41:22So, you know, you kind of have to pick your battle, right?
- 41:24So it's like, well, I could do this right, you know, me and
- 41:28Charlie Marlo are my YouTube manager.
- 41:30My friend, we talk about people love to know about money and so
- 41:33I like Rusty, says, Herman. You take that you never puncture
- 41:37the skin but and I don't, but I will tell you Bobbi that, you
- 41:41know, when I was racing you, we had Cox treated, lumber Rusty
- 41:45had zero. We had Miller, these are all
- 41:47very small Associates, you know, I mean we did everything we
- 41:51could do, but we spent six hundred thousand dollars racing.
- 41:54You, you know, in the V6 days, you know, I mean, I don't, you
- 41:58know what I mean? We spent 600 gram.
- 42:01Now. If you're running the Xfinity
- 42:02series the same Series. Yeah, you know, if you don't get
- 42:06six million in drivers are driving for nothing nowadays.
- 42:10I mean, I think Rusty, paid me. 25,000 dollars back then, but me
- 42:14and you were crew members. We were separated toe and then
- 42:17get in the car in qualifying to Daytona.
- 42:19Yeah, it was just so yeah, just different.
- 42:23Yeah, you know sore coming down to the end here.
- 42:27By the way, you know, we've done Tony Stewart, we've done Mark
- 42:29Martin, I've heard Kevin Harvick or getting ready to harvest but
- 42:35this is what these interviews are about.
- 42:36It's a no it's about just everything people what started
- 42:41the Kenny conversation is everywhere I go.
- 42:45What's babita Banu? You doing what, you know, so
- 42:49that's what Kenny conversation is about.
- 42:51So we're coming down to the end here.
- 42:54Want to wrap up the race and just a little bit before we get
- 42:57your opinion on. NASCAR you're driving for
- 43:02Hermie, Sadler in the smart tour.
- 43:04The modified is that right you know smart modified tour
- 43:08Southern modified auto racing, NASCAR National Auto so tell me
- 43:17about that mod your badass in it.
- 43:20Well I mean you know we started off you know kind of a the the
- 43:23way the funny Goes is. Um, I'm just cruising along back
- 43:29prior to covid and Kris Williams.
- 43:34You know, Kris Williams souvenir Legend.
- 43:36Yep. And so, he's racing Bowman Gray.
- 43:40So I'm in a place in my life where I'm, I doing crap, okay, I
- 43:46ain't doing nothing. I mean, I'm doing TV stuff, but
- 43:48I'm not racing damn, I guess until I get it.
- 43:50So I did a I think I did a vintage race.
- 43:54This was Scott borchetta did one at ND with Gary cluck thanks
- 44:06Gary. And oh yeah that's about it
- 44:08right? I mean yeah.
- 44:10So Chris calls me one day and says, hey we come let's come
- 44:13over here at Bowman Gray. Help me was modified.
- 44:15You know, I've never been to Bowman Gray and it's 18 miles
- 44:18from my house. Bowman Gray you never been Next
- 44:24time, you're in town, we should go most rings watch, right?
- 44:29So I go over there. So this is the oddest on Scott
- 44:32Street, I walk in there, I pay five dollars, I have my helmet,
- 44:35my uniform walk in there, I see first there's like four years
- 44:39ago. Yeah.
- 44:40So I saw Chris so he's with Burt Myers.
- 44:42So I know Bert. No of Burke, you know, kind of
- 44:44love everybody. I knows dad a little bit.
- 44:46Probably more, you know, hurt maybe to a point Jason's there.
- 44:50So anyway, I go walk up there and I watch Chris, go out and
- 44:53run a few laps. Apps and he's all right, ma'am.
- 44:55Once you get in it and a few laughs you can help me out
- 44:57because he's trying to drive, he's driving it.
- 44:59Okay. So I'm not sure where he got
- 45:02the, you know, hey, I want to drive a race car, but he that's
- 45:04what he wanted to do. He's a big modified guy, but he
- 45:06want to drive home a gray. Let me, let me say something.
- 45:08Keep your thought for a minute. I want the people to know.
- 45:10This is the real modified, the bad boy, the big wide tires,
- 45:15like, baddest modifieds. There are ya.
- 45:18Bowman Gray, runs smaller tires because it's such a great
- 45:21writer, still big. He's so big right now, but thank
- 45:24you. I mean he'll he's they're
- 45:25building Motors I mean they're all cheated up every night,
- 45:27she'd everybody. So absolutely anyway so I get in
- 45:32it. Push the seed in.
- 45:33I go out. Run about 20 laps, I come in.
- 45:35I'm like You know, that's you know, I got only gas sooner,
- 45:40drove a little deeper than Chris.
- 45:42It's a little tighter. I don't know.
- 45:43You know, it's okay. So I think I might do one more
- 45:45time, he drove it, I drove it. Okay, so I got ready to leave.
- 45:49Are you coming back tonight to run to watch?
- 45:52I said probably just sit at home.
- 45:55Watch TV my wife's at school, she went to Duke to get her MBA
- 45:58so she's been gone every other weekend.
- 46:00You're a bachelor by yourself. I guess I'll just hang up on
- 46:03myself. I'm gonna do crap.
- 46:05So about 6:30, you know, Like oh Mazel right over there.
- 46:07So I go over there so I paid $15 to get in.
- 46:12So I get my arm band and I go over there and see Chris and
- 46:15they qualify and here and blah, blah blah and talk to them and
- 46:19ice cover here. And I go up with Terry Hall and
- 46:22watch from the spotter stand. Watch.
- 46:25Oh crap. It's like get back down there
- 46:27after races are there's like two fights going on over here on
- 46:30like this? Why did I want to get rid of
- 46:32that show? It was so good.
- 46:34And I'm like, man, this is awesome.
- 46:36I said, So everybody asked me, this is what do you think?
- 46:38I say this is best, 20 bucks. I've spent a long time, you
- 46:41can't buy, you can't buy this adventure for 20 bucks anywhere
- 46:44else, right? So we started going on, this is
- 46:47I don't want to run out of time here.
- 46:49Sir. Going on your that, that track
- 46:51was on what was it called? Madhouse on him.
- 46:54It was I can't believe they got rid of it.
- 46:56Yeah so so anyway so I go back over there after a few weeks and
- 47:00I get with Burton we had he had extra car.
- 47:02Got a sponsor and they put it together and I go test one time
- 47:05and Then I go race. All right, so I go there.
- 47:08One night to race and I'm like, okay, we qualified, you know,
- 47:11fair and we're running running the race.
- 47:14Of course, I get the car before the race starts.
- 47:15I line up on pit on the racetrack, there's 14,000
- 47:18people, I mean, it's not like you're no longer facing.
- 47:22Yes, not like four thousand or two thousand is for Wednesday
- 47:25and Thursday night, Saturday nights.
- 47:28Okay, Sarah nice. Yeah, so we pull out there and I
- 47:31first thought was, what am I doing?
- 47:33Is, you're going to have to run into somebody and I usually
- 47:35don't spend people out, right? No, I'm going on.
- 47:38They're going along and I'm running along and finally I get
- 47:40spun out by John Smith right and which that is nothing at the
- 47:46time it's just happens right about.
- 47:48I mean it's just racing, you know, so I get to the infield,
- 47:51come back out blah, blah, blah. So then we go back another night
- 47:54I'm running and Tony eury. Jr.
- 47:56Is my crew chief, right? So now you this is always funny
- 48:00because when we set the toe you know they paint the tire and
- 48:04then put the screwdriver up grinding here.
- 48:07Dale dale. See Dale Junior's Posse.
- 48:11Crew. Chief right, right?
- 48:12Yeah. Not everybody knows these names.
- 48:15Bobby. I gotta remind people.
- 48:16Yep. Tony eury jr.
- 48:18His crew chief. So we work on the car, we get a
- 48:20little bit better. Blah, blah, blah.
- 48:21We go out and run. And I remember what lap it was
- 48:23is a caution come out. We got a little bit of, you
- 48:27know, bumper tag. I said, hey man, I I think I got
- 48:31park it. He goes why I say the A-frames
- 48:35loose. He goes oh how you know?
- 48:39I said I can see it. There's a prank right there in
- 48:43front of me I'm like I can see all those shoes are find out
- 48:45letters. Yeah.
- 48:47It was like okay so I pulled off and we were done so fast forward
- 48:51a little bit. I think that might have been, I
- 48:53can remember. Now I think it is co but
- 48:54happened or something like that happen so I get a call from
- 49:04Terry Hall and and Android. D Mike Smith and said, hey can
- 49:09you drive our modified at Florence because his brother
- 49:12John Smith year and a half ago? You know, whatever.
- 49:16You know it? Yeah, yeah.
- 49:18And you know, but again, that was a funny other than the name.
- 49:21So the person. So anyway, she's only down to
- 49:23Florence and I'm like, all right, this is gonna be
- 49:27interesting. So I drove down there drawback
- 49:29because I thought, well, they don't want me to come back, I'm
- 49:30not going to get a hotel bring, right?
- 49:32So I go down there, practice car, come back, I go back the
- 49:35next day. If I'd first finished fourth and
- 49:37I like, I like this. This is okay, this is okay.
- 49:41So you know it's one of those things too.
- 49:42When I left Pit Road, I went okay I got to break my left
- 49:44foot. It's gonna be difficult, right?
- 49:47Amedeo, you know how I am. Herman is like, um, yeah, that
- 49:52was a little chore for me to figure that out like a lap.
- 49:55Three. Right.
- 49:56So anyway, so that's it. All worked out all worked out.
- 49:59So that's so the. So this year driving so sorry,
- 50:04but I've always talked to you because you and the light great
- 50:11dick. Dribble were the only fast one
- 50:14foot Drive. Purrs that wanted also Dick
- 50:17Trickle would say, my boy you either on the gas or off of it.
- 50:21So your whole career in the cup series, you want everything on
- 50:25the gas taking that same foot over on the break.
- 50:29Am I right? That's correct.
- 50:30Yeah, that's unbelievable. I tried both sometimes it didn't
- 50:34seem like it was any faster. So I was like, why should I do
- 50:36that, right? Bobby.
- 50:37You downplay such a big deal. That's huge.
- 50:40So, so anyway, so now how is Gloucester, right over it?
- 50:44Popped over here. So anyway, so so it's the series
- 50:48has grown so much and this year. Ryan Newman and I are both
- 50:52teammates. No need for.
- 50:55Yep, for Hermie Sadler. And yeah I mean they're a blast
- 50:59and so you know one reason why you've won in not in that car
- 51:05but you want your mom a couple years ago won two in a row and
- 51:09we finished third in points last year, you know, I mean, just
- 51:12consistently consistently eyes. Always seem to miss Victory Lane
- 51:17by just a skosh but we're always pretty quick.
- 51:19I mean, you know where we never were out of the out of the hunt.
- 51:23So this year started off a little slow, I mean qualified
- 51:26second run in second with few laps to go they'll back at
- 51:30loose, you know. So we're trying to find our way
- 51:32but our best race so far this year was at Richmond.
- 51:35Okay it on the big track right? Well yeah yeah so we ran with on
- 51:38the wheel and tour which is what was the the excitement about
- 51:42drawing for her me is. So we're going to get to do that
- 51:44four times this year. So Richmond was one, will do
- 51:47Martinsville will do Langley and we'll do North Wilkesboro.
- 51:51So, so excited about that opportunity and, you know, we
- 51:56still were fast everywhere. We can't seem to close the deal
- 52:00to get the top three or when yet, but I feel like that's
- 52:03coming. I talked to Ryan Lewis
- 52:05yesterday. I was like, I'm really excited
- 52:07about every race that we go forward.
- 52:11He's got such as a couple tracks coming up.
- 52:13He's going to love I just I know how he is.
- 52:15Is gonna be great for him. And so, but for me like
- 52:18Richmond, you know, we qualified ape had a couple of pit stops.
- 52:24We lost some spots could roll back to six a lot of cars there.
- 52:27Yep. Past past cars and I mean great
- 52:29drives good. Yep.
- 52:31So so great drivers. So anyway so we finish there and
- 52:34we ran the South Boston that night.
- 52:36Yeah. So yeah, heck of a heck of a
- 52:39deal and you know Army gave us this opportunity and yeah I mean
- 52:43it's it's real. So, a little bit about life, I
- 52:48feel like I'm always interjecting because you,
- 52:50downplay, everything, I Yuan Schrader or a little bit the
- 52:54same. You, you are incredibly good.
- 52:57I feel like both of you, I mean Bobby, this is me saying this,
- 53:00this is a compliment. I feel like although you try
- 53:04your, you have got a god-given talent, you're incredibly good.
- 53:08And so I think that's why when we're having fun with this
- 53:11conversation, I'm I'm always interjecting because I do you
- 53:15You know, that you downplay your abilities, do you mean, listen,
- 53:20you want to an Xfinity Championship, you've won a cup
- 53:23Championship. You, you've won an Sr X-rays.
- 53:26I mean, you literally have done it all.
- 53:28Do you know you're that good? Do you know you have a god-given
- 53:33talent? And don't don't downplay the
- 53:35answer. Do you ever ride along in your
- 53:37passenger car and go? Damn, I have a God's Gift.
- 53:42Well, I didn't. I don't you.
- 53:45Two things you could do mine. Now, two things come to mind
- 53:49when I got my ARCA license in my eye and my I am see a license.
- 53:55Yeah, that's where I got my MCH stickers.
- 53:57I mean that I thought that right there put me over the top
- 54:00Schrader told me. He said, if you keep it keep at
- 54:02this, you're going somewhere in same fashion, you downplay
- 54:07everything, you know, the qualified, a to a normal race,
- 54:11we go. Look 62, cars.
- 54:12Showed up at 8:00, that's dirt. And so we're going to wrap this
- 54:17part of me so I was I wasn't GoPro the other day because all
- 54:20my stuff broke. So I got the rental carts and I
- 54:23looked up and I'm like, all right, I'm 10th quick for the
- 54:25week and eyes is all these kids up there and I'm like So you
- 54:31still great I need to come back in the morning with a track
- 54:35schooler include quicker. Right.
- 54:36Instead of the afternoon, it's hot though you are a badass and
- 54:42so it's that time now where the way Kenny conversation works is
- 54:46we talked about it all and then at the very end we go for what
- 54:52we know and what made you popular Bobby's a good person
- 54:57but we got to talk about NASCAR for a little bit.
- 54:59Don't want to get you in trouble and nobody's getting in trouble,
- 55:05your opinion on NASCAR right now, what is it?
- 55:11Well, I think that It is, it is as good or better for the time.
- 55:23That anything else 15 years ago, it was as good as it was for the
- 55:30time, but times have changed, right?
- 55:33So it's not easy. It was easy back then, and 95 to
- 55:392005, it just kind of happened, you know, the popularity, you
- 55:43know, the 75 million fans or whatever it was.
- 55:46Is called and you know, when Dale, seniors alive and we had
- 55:50all these drivers that were like to buy so many right?
- 55:57And we had sponsors that put everything into place to make a
- 56:01lot of people household names, Coca-Cola, good point, you know,
- 56:06Interstate Batteries, you know, you had Jeff Gordon with Dupont.
- 56:09You had ups with Dale Jarrett. You know, you had so many
- 56:12sponsors and Mark, Martin Folgers for babbling, you know?
- 56:15I mean, You just you could rattle them off.
- 56:17Today is like it's harder to do so to me, I don't know that
- 56:22anybody could have predicted what took place in the last 10
- 56:26years or since Earnhardt passed away.
- 56:28How this, how it was going to go, y'all think it's going to
- 56:31get bigger and better and all that stuff.
- 56:33I mean my gosh TV, and streaming and YouTube and all of them are
- 56:39a lot of stuff has changed from when in those Glory years,
- 56:43right? So in my mind, Mind.
- 56:46I think that no different than it could have been better.
- 56:50No different than now, it can be better but I think for what what
- 56:55everybody is giving given the circumstances of Life, the
- 57:00circumstances of, you know, attention spans attend, you
- 57:04know, phones or whatever it could be.
- 57:07I think that's our show, they watch five minutes because they
- 57:10can't go anymore because the brains messed up, right?
- 57:13Everybody's doing what I Saying. Yeah, I mean, so I think, in my
- 57:20mind, I view it is every racist. I mean, I hate when people say I
- 57:24was a terrible race. I'm like, man, you know,
- 57:27terrible races are all good, just depends on what side of the
- 57:29fence. You want to look at it, you want
- 57:30to look at it as great or if you don't like if you don't like
- 57:33wrecking, okay? That's your opinion.
- 57:36But if you if I mean, if you like wrecking that your opinion
- 57:39if you don't like wrecking, my opinion is it was a great race
- 57:42Dover is going to be a great race.
- 57:43I can tell you that before because there's going to be some
- 57:45things in it that That I know about that, sometimes the fan
- 57:48doesn't know about. Well, we're Jay, will he know
- 57:50too much? We right.
- 57:52So, so saying that. Could it be better?
- 57:55Yeah. But I also think that not every
- 57:59idea is a great idea, right? I have some what I think is a
- 58:03great idea, not very good, but it happens that way.
- 58:07So in you learn by your mistakes or you you, you know, I mean
- 58:11sometimes you just don't make those mistakes, right?
- 58:14Because and you You have somebody to me somebody needs to
- 58:18be on your shoulder back here. Saying you go man I think it'd
- 58:23be great if we change this to a glass bottle and blah, blah
- 58:28blah. People like so somebody needs to
- 58:31say why would you do that? You know, I mean, that's a bad
- 58:35example, but you know, why would you do that?
- 58:37And so somebody, somebody needs to be in charge on some things
- 58:42to say when some things in the whole Sports is somebody says
- 58:47hey I think it's a good idea to do that.
- 58:48And so my needs tap on shoulder. Say what if we just didn't do
- 58:51that we just left alone. Does she say say stage breaks,
- 58:54right? Yeah.
- 58:55Like stages, like what if we just didn't do that?
- 58:58I think it'd be. Okay.
- 58:59We just need to not worry, you know?
- 59:00I mean something that Doesn't really everybody thinks it's
- 59:04going to be better but sometimes they're not always better,
- 59:06right? Let me comment on something, but
- 59:08there is a lot of things that are good, but it's just
- 59:12evolution of how it could be a little bit better here, a little
- 59:14bit better there you and I are on the same wavelength and I
- 59:17have specific questions going on with NASCAR, but I want to talk
- 59:21about that for a minute. Ed Lucas, who was the president
- 59:24of Toyota was a friend of all of ours, he still doing great, but
- 59:28he's not in charge of Motorsports at NASCAR anymore.
- 59:31He said something I'll never Forget he said, as soon as those
- 59:34Nascar cup cars changed their paint jobs, they dilute
- 59:39everything. So all I have to do Bobby is see
- 59:44the color green and I think a Bobby Labonte.
- 59:47I like, I like what you said back then and mean you aren't
- 59:52doing that, you know, I ran through the snow and foot being
- 59:56a foot of snow and we're not doing that.
- 59:58But what you're saying that, I do want to comment on what a
- 1:00:01compliment you You are really because Ed lauca said that.
- 1:00:05So we made Superstars back then because Earnhardt was the GM
- 1:00:08Goodwrench Chevrolet. Rusty Wallace was Miller Miller.
- 1:00:12I mean Jeff Gordon was weakened logs.
- 1:00:15Yeah. Right.
- 1:00:16So it is a my opinion that we have this small circle.
- 1:00:22Now the names I mean Joey logano's are two-time Champion.
- 1:00:26Yes he's a legend. He kind of got in right at that
- 1:00:29but I mean for me it is Harder. Nowadays to make Superstars
- 1:00:36because every race is like. Okay.
- 1:00:39What cars are Ross Chastain driving while he's driving
- 1:00:42Fred's going now? And then tomorrow, he'll be
- 1:00:45riding driving buscar. Don't you?
- 1:00:49Bring up a good point. It's very hard to make, NASCAR
- 1:00:53Superstars because we don't know what the hell Carver in.
- 1:00:56All right? And that that is that's where
- 1:01:00Interstate Battery Coca-Cola. Put me up my name.
- 1:01:03You know, when I had a stand up every weekend at the racetrack
- 1:01:06in a Walmart or in a Food Lion or yeah they knew young Kroger's
- 1:01:10or whatever and so yeah I mean that that's that's one thing now
- 1:01:16saying that and and we just say it this way is I want I would
- 1:01:22love to see Erik Jones, a Christopher Bell oh Ross
- 1:01:25Chastain just to name a few and to have that house.
- 1:01:32Old name, and at be able to earn that money, that, you know,
- 1:01:40that, you know, you're known so much more not from the melon
- 1:01:47last lap deal, but for, you know, being there, consistently
- 1:01:53and I can't do nothing about the sponsorship.
- 1:01:55But I hope I want those guys to be able to have that long
- 1:01:59career. Flourish.
- 1:02:02And not and enjoy it. Like I did, you know, how do you
- 1:02:07do that? You didn't have to be a race
- 1:02:09fan. You just walked in somewhere and
- 1:02:10you're like, wow, there's a stand-up of Bobby, the body.
- 1:02:13And when they saw you, yeah, they made millions of stand-ups.
- 1:02:17Yeah. Kurt Busch, you know, Sharpie,
- 1:02:19you know, I mean, it was huge, right?
- 1:02:20So so to me back, then there was a connection was easy because of
- 1:02:26what you said, all the cars that drivers and it just made it easy
- 1:02:29right harder now, so, Tougher. So how do you bridge that Gap?
- 1:02:35Or how do you help that Gap out? Yeah, and I think, you know,
- 1:02:38obviously Jeff Gordon going to be owning or, you know, so big
- 1:02:43with Hendrick. I mean, he's running it right?
- 1:02:45Jimmie Johnson coming in. Absolutely, you know, Kevin
- 1:02:48Harvick going to the booth warrior in the booth Burton Dale
- 1:02:52jr. On NBC.
- 1:02:54So the TV thanks so drivers are involved.
- 1:02:56But I think there's a way. I mean there is, how can there
- 1:03:00be a way that I can say? That I can promote not just one
- 1:03:04driver but you know, promote drivers because what happens to
- 1:03:08me is whenever I was in the mid 90s I was a people would say man
- 1:03:14I picked you because Davey Allison got killed at your my
- 1:03:16next favorite driver. Yeah.
- 1:03:17Or I picked you because so-and-so retired humor.
- 1:03:19Next favorite driver. I hear it all the time, but your
- 1:03:22but what happens then is, it was easier for the dad to bring the
- 1:03:26kid to the race and enjoy the weekend because it didn't cost
- 1:03:29so much and it was just, you didn't have to you, you had to
- 1:03:32come Chitter, you were going to get to watch it, right?
- 1:03:34So then today there's a bigger disconnect in the kids being
- 1:03:39brought by the dads. So, I see the dads, I see the
- 1:03:43dad's now because he was a kid. When he remembered me, he's
- 1:03:46bringing his kid, but it's just not quite the same.
- 1:03:48So if he can connect me with his me, and his kid, and hopefully,
- 1:03:54as impressionable as kids are today, that they'll go, oh,
- 1:03:58NASCAR, I remember my dad took me there.
- 1:04:00Instead of like I went to some race and I Remember it because I
- 1:04:03was of about and too busy doing looking at my phone, you know.
- 1:04:07So how do you connect all that together?
- 1:04:10And I think everybody does a great job at Grassroots racing
- 1:04:13it kind of puts people out there you know the SRX gets the you
- 1:04:17know different you know I mean I think it's all there but it's
- 1:04:20just how you know I mean it's just how do you keep up with
- 1:04:23that and how do you keep the 55 year old guy with his 12 year?
- 1:04:29Old kid or eight year old kid or whatever that How did he how
- 1:04:33does he get him involved in NASCAR where he's a fan?
- 1:04:36So how do you get that happening?
- 1:04:38And this is a this is not a dig. This is me.
- 1:04:42The reason we are where we're at is because we're not balanced
- 1:04:48anymore. We don't need 10 million dollars
- 1:04:53to run the year. We need 20 million so therefore
- 1:04:56there's no corporate company in America there there's not one
- 1:05:01corporate Any in America that you go hey I need 20 million
- 1:05:05dollars. I think the last one could be
- 1:05:07FedEx and we know we know for a fact in any Witnesses me saying
- 1:05:12this we know that Denny Hamlin is possibly the highest-paid
- 1:05:17driver right now. Maybe making six million dollar
- 1:05:19Basin. There's ones, making four
- 1:05:21hundred thousand bases that are running in the top ten and this
- 1:05:24is all because we can't get that money.
- 1:05:28So we're are were out of whack this fort.
- 1:05:32Us too much for the money you can get.
- 1:05:34And that's why we have a different sponsor, every single
- 1:05:37week on the card. I just wanted to say that so
- 1:05:41penalties and fines but I think that NASCAR is but I think
- 1:05:44NASCAR, I think everybody, I think there's a for the way the
- 1:05:49society is I think NASCAR is doing a great job at a lot of
- 1:05:52things. So it is but it's also they were
- 1:05:55dealt cards 20 years ago and they handled it this way and
- 1:05:59they're dealt cards now and they handled this way and It's it's
- 1:06:03it's not that it's they're not doing the wrong thing.
- 1:06:06It's just learning the new thing, new way to do things, so
- 1:06:11you and I are good with our money.
- 1:06:12We're not dummies. Years ago mean you built a whole
- 1:06:17race car, whole Cup car. Now, I'm not talking years ago.
- 1:06:19Maybe let's go 20 years ago. We built a whole Cup car for 150
- 1:06:24Grand. And that's, that's stretching
- 1:06:26it. Yeah, I've talked to everybody,
- 1:06:29I mean, the cars right now are 400,000 Plus or you know, I
- 1:06:33mean, plus not minus. So that's what I say by out of
- 1:06:37balance. Yeah, for sure.
- 1:06:39You know. So, okay, moving on, a couple
- 1:06:43more things. Fun stuff about NASCAR.
- 1:06:46Ask Tony Stewart, I asked Mark Martin, he's penalties in these
- 1:06:49fines, what is your, what is your thought on the, you know,
- 1:06:55penalties and the fines right now?
- 1:06:57It seems like it's unbelievable like every week.
- 1:07:02Yeah. I mean, obviously.
- 1:07:06You know, I don't know. There's there's a point that I
- 1:07:14guess there's a point that we've gotten skewed out of whack here
- 1:07:20on this because there's a for people to get fined and
- 1:07:24suspended and it's like over The greenhouse is a mm.
- 1:07:31Mm it's exaggeration but off you know, it's like the same thing,
- 1:07:34my god. Oh yeah.
- 1:07:35And and the humidity and the in the sunshine change that more
- 1:07:40than somebody, you know. So I mean it's like I mean
- 1:07:45there's I mean it's like time out time out.
- 1:07:54Yeah, right. It's like time out.
- 1:07:56What? Why don't we I don't.
- 1:07:58Why can't we make it where it's not, not all that important
- 1:08:01anymore. And somehow just kind of put it
- 1:08:04back to the some Ingenuity and some driver.
- 1:08:07And some luck. You know, instead of
- 1:08:10everything's got to be the thickness of this glass here,
- 1:08:14you know, and it's like dude I mean I mean I that all that does
- 1:08:19is cost more money right for the team.
- 1:08:21So saying all that, you know? And I think to me, if you're
- 1:08:26going to if you're going to Present a car for inspection.
- 1:08:29I get it present. This car for inspection.
- 1:08:31Here Comes this car rolls in there.
- 1:08:34All right, you're clear your good roller out to the line and
- 1:08:37have at it, boys, you know. Don't that's it.
- 1:08:41It's over inspection to thank you back home and dissect it,
- 1:08:44right? Yeah, it's a, you know, don't
- 1:08:46don't do that. I mean, if you know, I mean just
- 1:08:50don't do that. I mean, back in the day, it's if
- 1:08:52your engines big. You're kicked out if your
- 1:08:55spoilers too high, that's a problem, but Don't go back and
- 1:09:00you know measure I mean dissect so much it's I don't know.
- 1:09:04I mean again that's that thing that's like somebody should go.
- 1:09:07Hey are you doing too much here? Maybe we should help but try
- 1:09:12eating right now. Maybe just hate that just easy
- 1:09:16on the Pines easy on the penalties and just go easy for a
- 1:09:20little bit. I'm not saying you got to be you
- 1:09:22got to meet their criteria, the rules.
- 1:09:24We've got to me damn rules. And the problem is that that now
- 1:09:31this is just me. It's not a question.
- 1:09:32I just, I just like to create conversation with you for me.
- 1:09:38I do the Kenny Wallace YouTube show and the penalties in the
- 1:09:41fines are bigger than the race. It's like, you know, Joey Logano
- 1:09:46won the race, but that's not the story.
- 1:09:47The story is, you know, so-and-so got fine before
- 1:09:51hundred thousand dollars and that's the problem.
- 1:09:54Yeah. Whenever I mean I hate this is
- 1:09:57nose. Much to TMI here, but it goes
- 1:10:00back to that Monday morning you at the office, which nobody
- 1:10:03works anymore from office, but if you go to the office and your
- 1:10:05standard. See that's why you're funny
- 1:10:08pissing in the urinal. He's the guy beside you.
- 1:10:10Hey see, Joey Logano won. Yeah.
- 1:10:11Mine is a heck of a race. Yeah.
- 1:10:13Oh yeah but he got he got kicked out.
- 1:10:16You just went. There we go.
- 1:10:17Yeah. All right I'm just I'm sorry
- 1:10:18just peed all over you. I just walked out.
- 1:10:21It's like so you're right. So it's more about it's more
- 1:10:24about the drama, right? Actually, Race.
- 1:10:28So and it's like, oh my God, I mean that talk about I mean
- 1:10:33that's just I mean that over, it's overwhelming too much and
- 1:10:37yeah, I don't, I wish that wouldn't happen.
- 1:10:40I mean, I wouldn't, it be nice to go about six or eight weeks,
- 1:10:44or 12 weeks without anybody getting any find, or we're
- 1:10:47getting a little dance. And let's just, let's just have
- 1:10:50a race, you know, I mean, that's Sonoma.
- 1:10:52Race was awesome. Yeah, I mean, you know that
- 1:10:55track house car, one and Chastain was sick.
- 1:10:58Hitting Torrez was third. Add this program out of gas at
- 1:11:00the top of the hill. Yeah.
- 1:11:02And man that was also you see that guy turnover on the tires.
- 1:11:04Yeah, so all that blah blah. Okay yeah right yeah traitor and
- 1:11:10so at the end and then go, all right, you know, good game,
- 1:11:13let's go next week. Yeah.
- 1:11:14Okay and instead of like, oh oh oh, somebody was 30,000, all
- 1:11:20masking tape on the front of his car.
- 1:11:23Yeah. And we had 16 people had to be
- 1:11:25sent home because they didn't go through.
- 1:11:27In the first case like Ami. So the story and then the other
- 1:11:32story and the other story out ways that story, I mean I know
- 1:11:35what they're trying to do. They don't want, you know it's
- 1:11:38not like it used to be worried, fudge, everything and bustard
- 1:11:40go, it just don't look right. I know it would you know blah
- 1:11:43blah blah but you know I get it but it's like I don't know.
- 1:11:47That sounds good to me. You know like I said I'm jaded
- 1:11:50some people inside the sport will say well you don't know the
- 1:11:54whole story. I'm like yeah I do and now the
- 1:11:55whole damn story. Yeah.
- 1:11:58Okay. So The car itself. the card
- 1:12:05self, the next-gen car changed our sport forever one lug nut,
- 1:12:10you know, paddle shifting or not paddle shifting but you know,
- 1:12:13synchronized shifting basically, it's a whole new car, your
- 1:12:18thoughts on the car, Well I got to brag a little bit.
- 1:12:21So this new car I was probably one of the first ones to run
- 1:12:28this in the Sim. Hmm so I go to the Lara, you
- 1:12:33should brag and we did the old car at Kansas and the new card
- 1:12:39and the next-gen card Kansas. So the few things we were able
- 1:12:42to at the time because we didn't have the right map.
- 1:12:44All the right didn't have all the right maps for all the air.
- 1:12:49Row and everything like that, but we were like changing we're
- 1:12:51cambers and stuff like that. And so I run a couple days in
- 1:12:56the Sim and then I think I went to Richmond, ran it in the Sim
- 1:12:58and then Austin, ran it for real at Richmond after that.
- 1:13:02Right? So little known secret, this is
- 1:13:05good. No secret.
- 1:13:07Go gadget boy, was out there doing it again?
- 1:13:09So doing the same thing, so, yeah, I got boy, I still have a
- 1:13:17helmet at the Laura in Hindi I need to go get it actually,
- 1:13:22really good stuff. So anyway, so yeah, I think I
- 1:13:26don't know, I mean, I know this hard work on.
- 1:13:29I know is a lot of dang stuff on it and I mean, it goes back to
- 1:13:32that penalty. If you didn't put, the rice is
- 1:13:34good, the races are good. But it is.
- 1:13:36I mean, it's not, I mean, it is new.
- 1:13:38It is, it's it is what, you know, we're not racing a 65 Ford
- 1:13:45rear end with truck arms on it, but you know what, they don't
- 1:13:49build. Any more cars like that, I get
- 1:13:50it, you know, I mean the whole, you know, development of cars
- 1:13:54that we see on the street I mean I get it we need to look like
- 1:13:56that. So I mean sure some of some of
- 1:13:59me wishes. They still had a steering box in
- 1:14:01a truck armed with that body on it.
- 1:14:03Yeah. Okay.
- 1:14:04Just put the body of 70, right? Just put that body on it.
- 1:14:07But okay, so you talked somebody's like, well, we got to
- 1:14:10have sequential shift. We got to have this a Transit,
- 1:14:12okay? Okay, all right, all right, so
- 1:14:14the biggest thing I see is it does race good.
- 1:14:17I wish it was a little more. Double easy.
- 1:14:21I'll head say that easy, easy flexible and and I wish you
- 1:14:26didn't call so much. I mean, it'd be a whole lot
- 1:14:28better to have for three or four more car, owners out there
- 1:14:32getting into it, over 36, you know, 36 cars, 38 cars, 36.
- 1:14:36I mean, I'd like to see 43 over, we can't write.
- 1:14:39And so anyway, I mean, but it does race pretty cool, pretty
- 1:14:43good and I think the sounds pretty awesome.
- 1:14:46I mean at times I think it's cool but no I mean I mean I mean
- 1:14:50again I think it races good. You know I was at Martinsville.
- 1:14:54Oh I'm sorry. I did the TV thing.
- 1:14:56I was just going to go want you to go in and watch.
- 1:14:58I was just going to watch but I had to watch something else but
- 1:15:00like we went to, I went to Richmond.
- 1:15:02I was at Richmond for the race. On Sunday, we went to Bristol.
- 1:15:06Watch them will go to Darlington, will go to the Coke
- 1:15:10600, you know, so I'm still a fan of it.
- 1:15:13I mean I almost hit the grandstands or sweet if I can
- 1:15:16find it and you know, watch the racing because I still love it.
- 1:15:20It's still racing. Okay?
- 1:15:22It's still racing and all the winners last year, multiple
- 1:15:27winners, this year, I think that's good.
- 1:15:29So I think this car does bring so many good things in the
- 1:15:31sport. You know, everybody including
- 1:15:34myself is going to go. Well, it's not perfect.
- 1:15:37I wish it were a little bit lighter or a little bit
- 1:15:39flimsier, when you have a wreck, I wish it had a little bit of
- 1:15:43something, you know. But hey, I think all in all it's
- 1:15:46no different than so many things.
- 1:15:48We Racers do we don't like change and we don't like to not
- 1:15:53change. It's just we don't like nothing
- 1:15:55but the change has been good and it takes everybody a while to
- 1:15:58get used to it. This year has been a whole lot
- 1:16:00easier to swallow than last year last year was like oh my God you
- 1:16:04know this year is like oh it's just a race car then there's
- 1:16:07drivers and we're racing and we're competing for wins.
- 1:16:11Somebody's going to win and 36 is going to lose.
- 1:16:13So there you have it every weekend so that brings me to
- 1:16:16this the very end. What is good about, NASCAR, what
- 1:16:24is good about, NASCAR, you know, I I, I would say the good is
- 1:16:33what I what I love about is they, they are, there they are
- 1:16:37still there, they're still there, they're still putting on
- 1:16:40a great race. Great show.
- 1:16:43We can tweak out, I think that through covid, That it could
- 1:16:51have been man. It, you know, it could have gone
- 1:16:55that way, but instead, they took it, they kept, they kept making
- 1:17:00it happen, making it happen and they made it happen.
- 1:17:02And so, the commitment that they have, you know, the leadership
- 1:17:06being Jim Lisa on down the line and then, you know obviously
- 1:17:13O'Donnell Phelps and everybody below that but that whole
- 1:17:17leadership thing, the decisions that They made through that.
- 1:17:20And I think that they also, as much as I say, I wish this car
- 1:17:25was this wish it was that I remember standing down there and
- 1:17:29turn one at Watkins Glen and talking to Jim France and we're
- 1:17:31looking at an MC cargo by and he had like in my head he said
- 1:17:35something like these cars need look like that.
- 1:17:38Instead of the swap, each all card, you know not mocking you
- 1:17:41know we aren't and kind of wolpe driver is all roofed over and
- 1:17:44I'll quarter panels so but they know how to make it work, okay?
- 1:17:49Again the times are different but they know how to make it
- 1:17:51work. They know how to make the show
- 1:17:53work. They know how to make it all
- 1:17:55people, get their the race happens.
- 1:17:57Ins and it all works. It all work.
- 1:17:59So what to me what was great about NASCAR?
- 1:18:02Is they love it because it'd be easier for them to have said.
- 1:18:07Yeah. Okay, we're just, I mean, it's
- 1:18:09not as something many times could they have sold my God?
- 1:18:12That represent many cars, sold at a hundred times?
- 1:18:14Yeah, but instead, you know, even though the racer might go,
- 1:18:19I wish you wouldn't. They wouldn't have done that but
- 1:18:22they see a different version. They're not a 30,000 feet there
- 1:18:25at 50,000 feet and they see it as a whole and we Just look at
- 1:18:27it like that and so I think NASCAR, you know, as much as I
- 1:18:31can say, I wish that it done this.
- 1:18:33You know what? I probably couldn't do no
- 1:18:35better, they're doing a great job and we can tweak out.
- 1:18:38There are so many people that You know, a are employed by it
- 1:18:44make money at it and and fans still enjoy it.
- 1:18:48They still get everything they can get out of it and it's
- 1:18:51watched on TV all over the world and people go to the races week
- 1:18:54in and week out. So you know what else can you
- 1:18:56ask for? And they could have easily like
- 1:18:59you said they could have sold it or they could have, they could
- 1:19:01have made decisions that heard it instead of really just
- 1:19:04keeping it going and making it keep making it better.
- 1:19:06Yeah, I'm thinking I'm thinking of the Perfect Storm.
- 1:19:12They've weathered the storm. Wow!
- 1:19:15You and I will. Bobby.
- 1:19:17Listen, we're coming to an end and I want to say that.
