- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the 1962 Roman Missal. The feast of Saint Jerome, priest, confessor, and doctor. September 30 in the year of our Lord 2026. Of today's saint, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes, Jerome was born at Striden in Dalmatia and was baptized at Rome. He was educated at a school held by very distinguished professors.
- 0:40Ordained priest, he retired into a monastery founded by two great Roman ladies, Saint Paula and Saint Eustachium at Bethlehem near the crib in which our Lord was born. Mortifying himself by perpetual abstinence and devoting himself to meditation of the scriptures, he spent days and nights reading and writing. It is he who fixed the Latin text in the translation known as the Vulgate, which the church adopted as the official translation of the Bible. He died in the year of our Lord 420 and his body rests in Saint Mary Major. In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost.
- 1:41Amen. The introit. In the midst of the church he opened his mouth and the Lord filled him with a spirit of wisdom and understanding. He clothed him with a robe of glory. Sweet it is to praise the Lord, to sing most high God in honor of thy name.
- 2:08Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. In the midst of the church he opened his mouth and the Lord filled him with a spirit of wisdom and understanding. He clothed him with a robe of glory. The Collect, let us pray.
- 2:42O God, who for the expounding of holy scripture didst raise up in thy church the great and holy doctor Jerome. Grant, we pray thee, that helped by thy grace, we may put in practice what both by word and by work he has taught us through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the second letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to Timothy. Dearly beloved, I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus who is to judge the living and the dead and by his appearing and his kingdom.
- 3:43Preach the word. Be urgent in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, and exhort. Be unfailing in patience and in doctrine for the time is coming when men will not endure sound doctrine but having itching ears. They will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own likings and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander into myths.
- 4:21As for you, always be steady, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. For I am already being poured out in sacrifice. The time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race.
- 4:49I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day and not only to me, but also to all who have loved his advent. The gradual, Right reason is on the good man's lips. Well weighed are all his counsels. His steps never falter because the law of God rules in his heart.
- 5:30Alleluia. Alleluia. The Lord loved him well and ennobled him. He clothed him about with a robe of honor. Hallelujah.
- 5:48A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. At that time Jesus said to his disciples, You are the salt of the earth. But if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trodden underfoot by men. You are the light of the world.
- 6:20A city set on a hill cannot be hid nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel but on a stand and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets. I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them. For truly I say to you till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished.
- 7:13Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and so teaches men shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But he that shall do them and teach them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. The offertory. The just man shall flourish like the palm tree. He shall grow to greatness like the cedars of Lebanon.
- 7:51The secret. By pouring out upon us thy heavenly grace, enable us, we beseech thee, O Lord, to serve thee with hearts detached from the things of earth. And may the prayers of blessed Jerome, thy confessor, obtained from thee that the gifts we bring win for us the healing of our souls and glory everlasting through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The common preface, Just it is indeed and fitting, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the powers stand in awe, the heavens and the hosts of heaven, together with the blessed Seraphim, joyfully do magnify.
- 9:14We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
- 9:44Hosanna in the highest. The communion. He was a faithful and wise servant whom the Lord setteth over his family to give them their measure of wheat in due season. The post communion let us pray. We who are filled with thy heavenly food beseech thee, O Lord, that by the intercession of blessed Jerome, thy confessor, we may be found worthy to win the grace of thy mercy through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost.
- 10:36God through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy ghost. Amen. Thanks be to God.
- 10:57Saint Jerome, pray for us.
