- 0:00Track us the Galaxy's Most Unpredictable Star Trek Podcast. Hello, welcome to Checkcasts
- 0:23the Galaxy's Most Unpredictable I am one of Scott's sidekicks with me is one of
- 0:33Scott's other sidekicks, Daniel. We're just I can only hope to be one.
- 0:38I know. We're just trying to hold things together until the big until
- 0:42our American hero returns. That's right, real American here ros. That's right.
- 0:50Oh man, it's almost like he's getting an ego. Almost. I
- 0:57mean, I don't see it, that's true, very subtle. Maybe yeah,
- 1:02maybe I don't. I don't see it. I don't see it.
- 1:07I know Desiree had to order all new hats for him because his head just
- 1:11got so big. Nothing nothing fit anymore. But you know, it's that's
- 1:15what happens when you're the host of the Galaxy's Most Unpredictable Star Trek podcast.
- 1:21Yeah. Absolutely, How have you been, man? How was your your
- 1:25fourth of July? Uh? Yeah, so we we we've had a we've
- 1:34had a rough couple of years. Yeah, sons with my son's school,
- 1:40we were we don't like the school. Yeah, and and we've been exploring
- 1:45ways to get him into a different school, and you know, there's limited
- 1:51options. You either move somewhere else, which is you know, a huge
- 1:57thing, selling your house, it's a gigantic undertaking. You either move home
- 2:06school. You home school, which is a lot of work. I have
- 2:12second property in another school district, which is also expensive, and uh things
- 2:20things came to a head recently where you know, school is out. My
- 2:23wife doesn't want him to go back to that school again. So I had
- 2:28this nice four day weekend and it was just all stress, you know,
- 2:32just looking through realtor and Zillo and and checking out school districts and yeah,
- 2:39I thought I was going to have this nice, relaxing four day weekend and
- 2:43it just it just didn't happen. So and then and then to find out
- 2:49that Scott's not joining us this morning was just one more letdown. It was.
- 2:54It was just it was like a rotten, moldy cherry on top of
- 2:58a ship Sunday. So the disappointment never ends. It doesn't it doesn't end.
- 3:05It doesn't end. And Jasmins does make the point the houses are sober
- 3:07priced right now. Well here's and that's there's two sides to every coin.
- 3:14I looked at what we can get for our house, and it's like,
- 3:15holy cow, it's you know, a lot more than we pay for it
- 3:21eight years ago, right, But everything else is more expensive too, so
- 3:27and then you know, you try, you get these ideas to try and
- 3:30game the system. It's like, well, you know, things are overpriced,
- 3:32but we're on the downslope now. The bubble is gonna burst. So
- 3:36how about I sell my house and then we go into a rental for a
- 3:39little while, let the bubble burst, and then and then buy something.
- 3:44And you know, so, okay, well I have a son and I
- 3:46have a daughter, so that means I need a three bedroom place, which
- 3:52is either a three bedroom apartment or a house. So let's see what it
- 3:54would cost to rent one of those. Oh my god, twice right what
- 3:58my morgan, three times what my more is right now right now to rent
- 4:01a place. So I don't know, we might just we might just buy
- 4:05a camper and just parking in the in the parking lot of whatever school my
- 4:10wife picks out for the kids. I don't know, well, I don't
- 4:15know, yeah, man, just home prices in general, and then and
- 4:21then the interest rates right now too, so like yes, yes. So
- 4:26you know, the interest rate on my mortgage right now is is, uh,
- 4:29you know, three point five percent. I look at what I would
- 4:32get into if I took out a mortgage right now, and it's twice that.
- 4:36Yeah, it's it's nuts. Yeah. But well my fourth was significantly
- 4:45less stressful. Well that's good. Yeah, glad to hear it. What
- 4:51do you guys do? We had a barbecue at uncle's house. Nice gardner.
- 4:57I mean, we did, we did all we did all that too,
- 4:59but I was, I was, I was at the background school.
- 5:01Yeah, no, we just we hung out. We had a good time.
- 5:06He went down to the Indian reservation and bought a bunch of illegal fireworks
- 5:11there you go. Yeah, yeah, everybody's still got ten little so far
- 5:15yeah so far right, that's good. Yeah yeah, but like the whole
- 5:18street, that's what everyone does around here. So like the whole street was
- 5:21their own private show. Yep. Yeah, and each one trying to out
- 5:26to you the next so nice. Yeah, it was a little nice.
- 5:30I don't know how it is there, but New York is strange. About
- 5:35ten years ago they changed the laws so you could buy fireworks yeah at like
- 5:41Walmart. Oh yeah, yeah, you can buy him here, but only
- 5:46it's only like thirty days leading up to July fourth and thirty days leading up
- 5:50to January first. The rest of the year. The rest of the year
- 5:55you can't buy them. And they're not the ones that go up in the
- 5:57air, the ones you light on the ground, like the candles the fountains
- 6:00or yeah, they have I don't know. Yeah. I thought it was
- 6:03funny being, you know, being online at Target and you look at the
- 6:08impulse rack and it's like, oh, you know what, I should get
- 6:10some Roman candles. Well right here, Yeah they have they have that type
- 6:15at the Walmart here, and then they have like the little huts they set
- 6:17out in the parking lot. Yes, yep, we have those two.
- 6:20Yeah, but the reservation is maybe half an hour away. Yeah, and
- 6:26they don't have those restrictions. Yeah, yeah, you can get I don't
- 6:30know what that. I don't know what they have on the reservations. Uh.
- 6:33In New York, I know, everybody goes to Pennsylvania. You hop
- 6:38over the border into Pennsylvania and you can buy mortar shells or whatever. Nobody
- 6:42cares. Yeah, it was funny because my my cousin, she had like
- 6:47a just giant arm of fireworks. Right, She was all excited and she's
- 6:51like, yeah, he told me that that was the last of it.
- 6:54I'm like, okay, so he shut down the minute we're done buying because
- 6:58you bought the last of it. She just looks at me like, oh,
- 7:01yeah, he got you, he got you. Nice. Yeah,
- 7:10Well we should probably get into Star Trek News. Sure, Star Trek News.
- 7:19All right, So our first headline comes to us from Variety and the
- 7:25ongoing will they won't they saga. We now have a new update on Paramount
- 7:30and what is going on, And apparently sky Dance Media and Paramount have reached
- 7:35an a tentative agreement, but for the time being, there is a forty
- 7:42five day window for Paramount shop for other offers. So this is a field.
- 7:51Yeah, so great, what have they been doing this last It's like,
- 7:58hey, do you want to go to prom with me? Yeah?
- 8:01If Steven doesn't ask me, I'll go to prom with you. That's right,
- 8:05that's what's right happening here. That is exactly what's happening. So so
- 8:09that's where we're at. So, yeah, there's a tentative agreement. It's
- 8:16a proposed six billion dollar transaction. So it's a lot of money, man,
- 8:22a lot of money for someone else to own the whole thing. Yeah,
- 8:26so you know what, you know what kind of school district that could
- 8:28get into for six billion dollars? Good one, whichever one I want.
- 8:33That's true. That's true. So but wasn't there another story? Wasn't there
- 8:37another guy who was you know, he was the president of Paramount like thirty
- 8:41years ago or whatever, and he wants to buy it. Yeah, like
- 8:45everyone's coming out of the woodwork staying they're interested. But you know, there
- 8:48there's that guy, there's the uh, the son of the guy who owned
- 8:54Oracle, the software company. Because we millionaire kids going after it. So
- 9:03yeah, well we'll see. But like that guy and the Oracles, and
- 9:09they probably have a shot at it, but not not like sky Dance.
- 9:13Sky Dancer is a giant conglomerate there. You know, it's all getting whittled
- 9:18down to one company apparently. You know, Elon Musk should buy it and
- 9:24then all of his rockets and and stuff. He could brand it. Yeah,
- 9:28he could. He could have Star Trek branded space travel. Come on,
- 9:33Elon, you could have the pep up Pig rocket. You know,
- 9:39I mean, I was thinking more like Star Trek. Oh yeah, yeah,
- 9:43that too. I was thinking all the franchises, you know, you
- 9:46know, he could what's the name of is, What's what's the name of
- 9:50his space SpaceX he could rename he could literally renamed SpaceX Starfleet and there's not
- 9:54than anybody, nothing, anybody could do about it. It's his. I
- 9:58mean, he could do that now. I mean Starfleet is registered for TV,
- 10:03not for real life. Yeah, I don't know. I think,
- 10:11yeah, it would be challenges, but yeah, whatever. And then our
- 10:18next story comes to us from trekmovie dot com. And now that Star Trek
- 10:24Prodigy is out, we're getting some hits up the ratings and apparently it's doing
- 10:28really well internationally. It is in the top ten for Netflix internationally. And
- 10:33meanwhile Star Trek Discovery is in the top five or top ten as well for
- 10:39Nielsen ratings, so both shows are doing pretty good. As you can see
- 10:43in the in the little graphic there, Prodigy is number ten in the top
- 10:48ten. So it's there, but you know, it's it's just under Cocoa
- 10:52Melon, I see, yeah, yeah, and Little Lunch and jab A
- 10:58Finn. Yeah, I don't know. But if you look at the breakdown
- 11:01per country, you know, it's it's number eight or nine in Austria,
- 11:05it's number seven in Belgium. They really love it in Belgium. Germany really
- 11:09loves it. It's been either seven, three, five or six. So
- 11:15yeah, it's moving. New Zealand's in the top ten. But not in
- 11:20the US. Huh. Not in the US? No, no, no.
- 11:22If we look at the Nielsen, which is these are the US numbers,
- 11:28Bridgerton is number one, but Star Trek Discovery is all the way down
- 11:31at number ten. You can see the vast difference in minutes viewed. This
- 11:37is minutes viewed in millions. So the other funny thing about it is,
- 11:43even though Discovery is in the top ten, it has the most episodes,
- 11:46so yeah for people watching it and the amount of bail someone yeah, yeah,
- 11:52if someone's tuning in for the whole thing, you know, yeah,
- 11:58it's a lot longer than than any of the other shows world. What is
- 12:03are these all shows or some of these movies whatever? Streaming content? So
- 12:09uh, okay, all right, yeah, so that those are the top
- 12:13ten shows original top ten so yeah, and then also just quick gits.
- 12:20Uh. Mike Mahon, the creator of Lower Decks, gave an interview recently
- 12:26to a podcast Extended Universe podcast, and he hinted at possible spinoffs for Lower
- 12:35Decks. He says in the upcoming season he's bringing in some characters, and
- 12:39he says, it's very obvious that you can tell which characters I would love
- 12:41to do more with. So I guess we'll see. I would love some
- 12:46Lower Deck spinoffs. What about you, Dan, Yeah, I mean I've
- 12:50enjoyed Lower Decks. It depends on what he's talking about, you know,
- 12:56I'd have to see. Yeah, I mean they're new characters. We have
- 13:00no idea, you know. Yeah. And then our last news story,
- 13:03let me bring this back up from a trekmovie dot com and we are getting
- 13:09a look at some exclusive merch that will be at the upcoming San Diego Comic
- 13:13Con. Comic Con is this July the twenty fifth through the twenty eighth,
- 13:18and they are unveiling some Starfleet style jackets. If you look at the screen
- 13:26for those of you watching, there's one that's kind of like inspired by the
- 13:28ship. It looks like it's got the NC seventeen oh one. It's kind
- 13:33of gray, kind of like a bomber jacket style. It looks like and
- 13:39then we also have based off the TNG uniforms that looks like that looks like
- 13:46Picard's jacket that he will yeah, kind of later episodes, they've got inside
- 13:50the jacket and the lining. They've got the Enterprise logo and it says,
- 13:56you know, property of USS Enterprise looks like a D. Everyone loves that
- 14:01D. Everybody loves that D. Baby. They are the pre order prices
- 14:07ninety nine dollars, so kind of not too bad, I think, price
- 14:11wise for something like this, you know, but you can pre order them
- 14:16at San Diego Comet Con. Then they're also going to be available at STLV,
- 14:22and then after that, whatever remaining stock, they're going to have a
- 14:24website where you can buy them in August, So yeah, cool, what
- 14:30do you think, Jen? Would you rock on? All? Right?
- 14:31So I'm looking at the patch. It says, you know, it's partially
- 14:35cut off, but USS Enterprise seventeen oh one, I think it says D
- 14:39and then it says Development Team Utopia Plantia Fleet Yards. So I think it's
- 14:43supposed to be like what the engineering crew wore, oh when they were built,
- 14:50yeah, when they were building this thing. So that's kind of cool.
- 14:52That is kind of cool. I like the design of the gray one
- 14:54way better than i'd like the uniform one. Yeah, yeah, I think
- 14:58it just it was cooler. But let's yeah, I like it. I
- 15:05like it too, So that's that is all the news stories. Cool.
- 15:09Well, let's get to our main topic. Fun will now come out.
- 15:20So Star Trek, part of these two is out. We watched a couple
- 15:24of episodes, at least how many episodes did you watch? Dan? I
- 15:28watched the first two episodes of the second season. Okay, I watched the
- 15:33first three, but okay, all right, and I did not watch the
- 15:39complete either, did I? And I went and I looked and I tried
- 15:43to I couldn't pick up where I left off because when I watched it the
- 15:46first time was on Paramount Plus and now it's Netflix, so it doesn't remember
- 15:50my my progress because it was service. So it's going through reading the different
- 15:56descriptions, trying to see where about I was and see, you know,
- 16:02should I finish off season one before starting season two? And I couldn't quite
- 16:10remember exactly where I was. And then I saw, well, there's like
- 16:15a lot that i'd have to watch to get a show that I'm not really
- 16:18that interested in so I just skipped ahead and I watched. Yeah, I
- 16:23watched the first two episodes of season two, tried to figure out the best
- 16:30I could what was going on, and it was fine. I figured it's
- 16:33a kids show. They've got to probably give a lot of context for everything
- 16:37they do because they never know any kids watching. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 16:41I mean I did think there would be a recap and there was not,
- 16:45no, which that surprised me. Yeah, no, there was no
- 16:48recap. But would you think of the episodes? I mean, I didn't
- 16:59finish a show the first time, so more of that. I only watched
- 17:07two. Yeah I could. I could have watched those two and then gone
- 17:12back and watched the others do that. I could have watched those two and
- 17:17finished out the season. I didn't do that. I could have watched one
- 17:22more. I didn't do that. I don't know. It's a kids show.
- 17:26It's absolutely geared towards kids. Yeah, I don't know. I mean
- 17:33I love from when I follow on online, people seem to love it.
- 17:38Right there. It's got it's got a pretty high rating from what I've read
- 17:42too. The longer it goes, the more the lower is there and it
- 17:48and it touches on things and so like it rewards you for watching it as
- 17:52as you go along. Yeah, yeah, well here's here, here's the
- 17:59thing. Yeah, uh, I never watched Clone Wars for Star Wars still
- 18:08to this day, and I have the I have the movie that started it.
- 18:15Well, I have the cartoons that started it, the MTV shorts that
- 18:18they did. Yes, yes, the two D animated ones. I have
- 18:26those on DVD. I watched half of those. I never finished that.
- 18:30I have the movie that started the three D animated one. I think I
- 18:37watched the whole thing with my son. I can't be I can't remember for
- 18:41sure. And then I think I have like the first two seasons on DVD.
- 18:48Still never opened them, so I've never watched that. I've never watched
- 18:56Bad Badge, Rebels, all these all, all of that stuff. I
- 19:00never watched it. And I don't know that's a good that's a good analogy,
- 19:07because yeah, same, So maybe it's not it's not this show.
- 19:11It's that I'm not into animation for kids. Yeah, as much as I
- 19:22thought, yeah, I love Lower Decks. I watched the Netflix he Man
- 19:29series that came out. I liked that. I used to buy all those
- 19:36uh DC Universe animated films that came out, but a lot of those were
- 19:41but a lot of those were geared towards adults. They were, right,
- 19:45you know, which is strange. Yeah, which is strange that I'm saying
- 19:48this because I'm usually dumping on stuff for not being something I can watch with
- 19:52my kid. But you know, a lot of the a lot of those
- 19:53I bought before it had kids. So I don't know. I think part
- 20:00of it is that. I think part of it is I don't have to
- 20:06be in a rush to watch it. It's always going to be there,
- 20:08and there's a little bit of comfort in knowing that there's a little bit more
- 20:12Star Trek out there that I've never seen, like I have some like like
- 20:15it's behind the glass case of Emergency break glass, right, And to be
- 20:25honest, I think Discovery and Strange New Worlds are the first Star Trek series
- 20:38that I've watched from beginning to end as they were happening. When TG came
- 20:45out in nineteen eighty seven, I was ten years old. Season one was
- 20:49rough, and I watched a few episodes and then I checked out. I
- 20:56was like, this is boring A couple of years later, I came back
- 21:00watched it straight through. Deep Space nine started while TG was on the air.
- 21:04I watched the pilot episode. I watched the first few episodes. I
- 21:08was like, this is rough and I and I bailed out for a little
- 21:12bit. Then TG went off the air, and uh, you know,
- 21:17I started watching Deep Space nine. Had to go back and watch those those
- 21:22old episodes. Uh, Voyager, same thing I didn't watch. I didn't
- 21:27watch religiously the first few seasons because Deep Space nine was still on the air,
- 21:32and then I went back and rewatched them all. I was I wasn't
- 21:37a kid anymore. I was a young adult when Enterprise came out, and
- 21:41I had adult responsibilities and didn't I didn't watch them all as they were as
- 21:48they were coming out. So yeah, it'll always be there. I can
- 21:53always go back if I decide to. Then again the over two seasons,
- 22:00then again. At the same time, I'm probably lying to myself because I've
- 22:02been saying that to myself about Clone Wars for twenty two years. At this
- 22:06point, if I wanted to watch it, I would have watched it by
- 22:10now. Yeah. Yeah, it's nice to have the the the illusion of
- 22:15it though, yeah, yeah, and some of it was weird. The
- 22:22doctor was weird. Yeah, every time I looked at him, Like,
- 22:26if I close my eyes, he's the doctor. I hear the doctor.
- 22:30It's it's Robert Ricardo. Three D animation doesn't always look exactly when they're three
- 22:37D animating an actual live person and you know what that character should look like.
- 22:42It doesn't always look right. Woody and Buzz look exactly the way they're
- 22:48supposed to look, because you know, it's it's Tom Hanks is the voice
- 22:55of Woody. He's not Woody. He's the voice of Woody. Robert Paccardo
- 23:00is the voice of the doctor. But he also is the doctor. And
- 23:03when I look at him, I'm looking at the picture you put up right
- 23:06now. Yeah, I don't. I don't see the e mh. I
- 23:08see Johnny. I see Johnny Cab from U from Total Recall. For whatever
- 23:15reason, to me, that texturing on the skin reads as like, wouldn't
- 23:21like like the Marionette, Yes, like the Johnny Cab from do you know
- 23:25what I'm talking about? The Johnny Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 23:29all right, Yeah, It's just it's not a good design. I feel
- 23:33like they could have done better. Yeah, yeah, but yeah, it's
- 23:42you know, I watched the first three episodes. To me, it felt
- 23:47a little more Star trek ish than what i'd seen before. Only saw a
- 23:51handful of episodes before, and that's probably because they were at Starfleet Academy,
- 23:56they were on ship, they were reporting for duty. You know, it
- 23:59had those aesthetics to it, right. It is, of course a kids
- 24:03show where they're all scrambling and talking about, Oh, we're gonna get in
- 24:07trouble if we do this, and yeah, you know, I did think
- 24:11it was funny that they mentioned that the Jeffery seos will take you anywhere,
- 24:15and that was just their magic portal to go anywhere they wanted on that.
- 24:22That was fun. I do like that in Dorian, I guess first officers
- 24:26kind of an asshole, you know, had that smug look about him,
- 24:30very very shrand like in that way. The oh you didn't get to episode
- 24:37three with the bird guy, so I saw I saw the flashback he was
- 24:44Chapote's first officer. I saw him dying or something. Yeah, yeah,
- 24:47getting or getting shot. Yeah, you see a lot more of him in
- 24:49episode three. That character seems interesting to me, yes, yeah, yeah,
- 24:56they do a lot of bird puns with him and he gets mad about
- 24:57it. It's pretty funny. Yeah, they gotta they gotta tie him to
- 25:03the the uh psychologist on the counselor on lower decks. See if they know
- 25:08each other? Oh yeah, yeah, like no, not all bird people
- 25:12know each other, you know, or the cats try and eat him.
- 25:18Yeah, yeah, but I did think, Oh, I'm sorry, goh
- 25:26no, good, go ahead. I was just gonna say there was a
- 25:27lot of timey me talk. Yes, And you know, the girl is
- 25:34on the planet and her mission doesn't go as planned and she flees and she
- 25:40has no one to flee to except her father, who is younger because of
- 25:48time travel and and and whatnot, and he's not evil yet. And you
- 25:52know, she meets him and and he's like a good dude. And m
- 25:57hmm. I don't know. I don't know. Are little kids gonna are
- 26:04they gonna get all that? Or is that gonna be too much? See?
- 26:08I think it's too much because they've even tried to explain time travel in
- 26:11this universe. How like it's kind of basically the Avengers model. Your past
- 26:17is always the past and it doesn't change. Yeah, And I get what
- 26:22they were trying to do and really dumb it down for kids, but that's
- 26:25still a difficult concept period, you know. Yeah, So like I don't
- 26:29think little kids are gonna go with it, But I also think little kids
- 26:30are just more prone to be like, yeah, whatever and just let go.
- 26:33Like I can remember being I was probably seventeen years old, uh huh,
- 26:40and trying to explain the grandfather paradox to my buddy's girlfriend, who was
- 26:48the same age at the time, and she just couldn't get it right.
- 26:52She just couldn't understand it. Yeah, And you know, and that was
- 26:56the seventeen year old almost woman at that point. So I don't know,
- 27:03because he's the kid that would let that go just like whatever. Yeah,
- 27:07I suppose. Yeah, it's weird because it's drawn and acted like a show
- 27:18for like, I don't know, kids between like five and ten, I
- 27:22would imagine, yeah, but really, like I think kids like ten to
- 27:27fifteen are more of the target audience, you know, m hmm. It's
- 27:34too I don't know. I don't think they know who their target audience is.
- 27:40Because this show's been out two years at this point, I have never
- 27:45seen a single piece of merchandise for this show. Yeah, they made that
- 27:51video game, right, but that's about it, Okay, and all the
- 27:56reviews set ups trash right. I think it was a reskinned It was a
- 28:00recenting, a different, a different video game. But like, h you
- 28:04know, we saw we saw pre production photos of toys and whatnot, and
- 28:10those never those never came out. I've never seen a I've never seen a
- 28:15Star Trek Prodigy lunchbox or water bottle or you know, backpack t shirt.
- 28:25I've never seen any of this. I mean, I'm sure this stuff exists
- 28:27somewhere, but you have to go find it. Yeah, you get a
- 28:33dig real deep in the internet for that one. Yeah. I think when
- 28:37when Netflix made the decision to purchase this from Paramount, I think they were
- 28:49thinking that forty year old people will watch this because it's a Star Trek.
- 28:53I don't think they were. They're not dumb people over there at Netflix.
- 28:56They know they're not. They've been doing it right for longer than anybody.
- 29:02H Yeah. Yeah, what else about the show? I don't know.
- 29:15Did you like the characters? Any of the characters did they stick out to
- 29:18you? No? Yeah? No, The main kid, Doll is that
- 29:27his name? I think so Doll Dell whatever, dal Dal Yeah, he
- 29:37is everything I usually hate about Star Trek, right, he he is the
- 29:42person the personification of I broke the rules, but it worked out, so
- 29:48I'm not gonna get punished for it, right, And that's usually what I
- 29:52hate about about Star Trek. The most the most realistic scene in all of
- 29:59Star Trek, I I think, is when Wharf goes back to save Judsya.
- 30:03It says f the mission goes back to save Judgsya, and later on
- 30:07Cisco tells him, your career will suffer because of this. You made the
- 30:15wrong you made the wrong decision. I think that's the most realistic scene in
- 30:19Star Trek. Yeah, granted years later it didn't matter and the enterprise at
- 30:26some point, but the whole you did the wrong thing, but it worked
- 30:32out, so we're going to keep you around. Yeah. That always bothers
- 30:36me. But did you ever watch that show fall Out? The follow up
- 30:41show? Okay, well, it was pretty popular and I know a lot
- 30:45of our listeners watched it. For those of you who didn't know, the
- 30:48voice actress for for Gwynn is actually from Fallout, Ella Parnell, So,
- 30:56okay, Gwinn, which one is gwyn that's the one whose dad is evil.
- 31:00That's the one whose dad is Yeah, but not in the past,
- 31:04right, right, So like are they like brother and sister at this point?
- 31:08What was going on there? Yeah? Yeah, so yeah, yeah,
- 31:18I I thought that rock type creature thing good, good comedic foil.
- 31:25You know, it's just there to be goofy. The one that looks like
- 31:30a big giant rock monster but it's a little girl. Yeah. I mean
- 31:36that's fun for kids, you know, just be scary looking thing. That's
- 31:38just sweet. Yeah. The thing that looks like a washer with arms and
- 31:42legs. What is that thing? Yeah, Micaporeal and it's stuck in a
- 31:48washer. It's non corporeal. Mike Wazowski, Yeah, exactly, exactly.
- 31:56Yeah, but yeah, yeah, I probably will go back to it.
- 32:01I know Terran has said multiple times that he loves it, watches it with
- 32:05his kids. Great. I'm glad that they have that. You know.
- 32:12I tried to watch this with with my son and he he wasn't that interested.
- 32:16Really, Okay, I was gonna ask Yeah, we uh. When
- 32:20it first came out a few years ago, we sat down, we watched
- 32:22it. We watched a few episodes and while it was on, he watched
- 32:27it. Yeah, when we turned it off. Every time I brought up
- 32:34going back to it, he wasn't he wasn't interested. Yeah, So so
- 32:38if I put it on, he would probably watch it. But he's never
- 32:43going to ask for it, right, So yeah, my my nephews and
- 32:49niece just didn't seem that interested. Yeah yeah, all right, well,
- 32:54I mean at this point, at this point, it depends on has he
- 33:00done something bad and I took the iPad and switch away for the weekend,
- 33:05because when because when that happens, suddenly sure his good old friend the TV
- 33:12mm hmmm, fills in that gap that was this weekend. So okay,
- 33:20he probably Yeah, he got in trouble, but if I put it on
- 33:24this weekend, he'd probably watch it. Okay, Okay, anyway, well
- 33:30yeah that's pretty much our review. Let's let's uh, let's get into listener
- 33:35feedback. Jazz was waiting, so listener feedback. All right, So we've
- 33:45got Chasmis on the line ready to go, so let's bring him in there.
- 33:50He is the captain, Captain Chas Bis Just so you know, I
- 33:55hope, I hope you're okay with this. Scot's not here, Yeah,
- 34:00so if you wanted to be if you want to, if you want to
- 34:04bail it out and call back next week, make it worth it. You
- 34:08can. Nobody's going to take it personally. You're free to stick Scott ain't
- 34:14here. Did you watch Prodigy or not? Or well? I found out
- 34:22you could watch it at one and a half time speed on your phone.
- 34:27Oh yeah, if you want to get through it really quick. The episode's
- 34:31like thirteen minutes long at that. Yes, yeah, so while you have
- 34:36talking, I could listen to it, so I might do that. Yeah,
- 34:43you got through the whole show really quick. The whole season's about thirty
- 34:47five minutes. Yes, yes, Well. One thing I was thinking of
- 34:52is when they showed Starfleet Academy at the beginning of the show. Yeah.
- 34:57Yeah, I'm sitting there. I'm like, I am so not excited for
- 35:00the Starfleet Academy right right, because it's going to be the hogwarts of Starfleet
- 35:08Academy, right. I think the sorting Badge is gonna put them in the
- 35:14house. They're going to be in so they're going to be like a red
- 35:17shirt or blue shirt or gold shirt. So you know, one thing I
- 35:22will say about Prodigy that I thought was interesting is they did mention the romulent
- 35:27evacuation that was going on during Picard. Okay, that was kind of cool.
- 35:31They tied it in that way. That is cool. But I just
- 35:36kind of wish, I don't know, like I want to see a new
- 35:42Star Trek show that actually shows different aliens. Yeah, like strange new worlds
- 35:49that didn't show any new aliens or something going so well. I mean they
- 35:54had andorians, they had bird people, they had yeah, but I mean
- 35:58a new species, new foreheads, new new nose ridges, they've got the
- 36:04talking washers, sideburns, whatever. Yeah, something weird, all right,
- 36:12all right, I mean to be fair, we don't know. We haven't
- 36:15watched it all. Like there might be he wants he wants to reverse he
- 36:22he wants a reverse trill. He wants a humanoids up inside some other yeah
- 36:27oh no, even annoyed in a worm. Oh no, oh no,
- 36:37I don't want any of those things. That'd be pretty cool. No,
- 36:42it would not be cool, oh man. But you know, I like
- 36:53I might have to reset. Okay, all right, Oh I like this
- 36:58time period to start Trek. But yeah, me too. You know,
- 37:01it's like they had the perfect show set up and then they messed up,
- 37:07they let go of Terry Metallis. Yeah, and he's going to Disney right
- 37:13now. He's gonna Marvel, yeah show which I'm excited he's doing, you
- 37:20know, yeah, more Power because I'm excited. I'm definitely gonna watch that
- 37:24show because I think he could. He's a good showrunner. Yeah, he
- 37:29seems very good. I watched a few episodes of Twelve Monkeys, Yeah,
- 37:34and that's really good too. Yeah. And then Captain was at Shaw's on
- 37:37there right, yeah, somewhere in there. I haven't gotten to him yet,
- 37:42but yeah, so you know he's gonna have to play a part and
- 37:45vision so maybe they're like good buddies. Yeah, yeah, he'll throw them
- 37:52in there somehow. Oh, I'm sure. I'm sure he'll be in there.
- 37:55I'll either be the bad guy or he'll do something right, right for
- 38:00sure. What are you gonna ask? I was gonna ask you, uh,
- 38:06what would you want in a Star Trek show for kids? Like?
- 38:08How would you what would you do with it? I think this will go
- 38:14over my head as a kid, Yeah, because you know, you're different
- 38:17aliens and you almost need a humanoid or a human because you have the adults.
- 38:24They are the humans, but you almost need somebody to represent the kids
- 38:29because the kids don't see themselves as maybe the aliens. Yeah, I feel
- 38:36like you could do something, you know, like uh, in TG,
- 38:39they always had like kids around on the ship. Mm hmm, well yeah,
- 38:44like a Westley Crusher type. Yeah, I think you could that,
- 38:51Like they're surrounded by the by the originals, but they're they're the kids on
- 38:54the ship. You know what it's like watching TG When I was a kid,
- 39:00I like the Westley Crusher episodes, right right, you grew up as
- 39:04an adult those episodes aren't as good as you remember, but you kind of
- 39:08related to him because you're a kid. Yeah, that's true. I was
- 39:13neat to see a kid on the starship and you're like, oh, that's
- 39:15cool, and there's this kid and he's doing all this stuff. I mean,
- 39:17that's that's the theory behind Robin. Right when they introduced him in Batman,
- 39:22the idea was like kids could never be Batman, but they could be
- 39:24Robin. Oh there he is, he's back. Yeah, I know what
- 39:29happened there. Reconnect pair of the iPads my ret power through the secondary did
- 39:37you go into some Jeffrey tubes and figure it all out. I did Doc
- 39:44Brown on the clock Tower trying to plug it in, gets struck by lightning,
- 39:51got it. But that's right, that's that's Alwa's wearing the hat.
- 39:54His hair is all the mess right now. Yes, my hair is terrible.
- 39:59Yes, so that's awesome. Well is there any upcoming sci fi shows
- 40:07or movies that you're interested in? Well, Deadpool, of course. I
- 40:12wouldn't say sci fi, but Deadpool. Just just to see a good superhero
- 40:17movie. Yeah, just a bunch of timey why, Yeah, it's sci
- 40:22fi ish. Yeah, yeah, because you you have a Loki connected to
- 40:27it, and that's gonna oh what do they call it in that universe where
- 40:32they can go into different time synergy? Yeah. Yeah, so yeah,
- 40:42I might go see the new Quiet Place movie. I watched it last week.
- 40:45Always it good, that's good. And just one thing about a quiet
- 40:50place is every time you try to eat popcorn or take a drink out of
- 40:54your drink, it's too quiet. It's it's gonna be super hot over here.
- 41:00And so I want to go sit in your conditioning for a while.
- 41:01So yeah, we're not about the movie. Yeah, And I was like,
- 41:06yeah, the theater would be dead now, So I shouldn't be watching
- 41:09tiktoks while the movie's gone. Yeah. Yeah, speaking speaking of that,
- 41:14I went to the movies yesterday. Oh would you see? Yeah, my
- 41:16wife and I took the kids to see Despicable Me for how many Oh?
- 41:21Wow? So how much did that cost you? Oh? God? Man?
- 41:29It was like eighty five bucks? Good lord? Yeah? Yeah.
- 41:34Do you sneak in drinks or popcorn? You know? I don't. And
- 41:39the reason is, when you go to the movies, you're not paying for
- 41:43the movie, You're you're paying for the experience. Yeah, And I don't
- 41:46want to cheapen the experience for my kids, So I suck it up every
- 41:51time, and I and every time I tell them pick a drink, pick
- 41:55some popcorn, pick some candy. And I suck it up because you know
- 42:00what the chances are when when they have kids, movie theaters aren't going to
- 42:05be a thing. So yeah, I want to give them the experience.
- 42:08So and I and I have the experience of tapping my credit card and and
- 42:15cringing. And then I saw that, and then I saw that this theater
- 42:21serves beer. Now, and I thought to myself, I don't know if
- 42:25I want to pay nine dollars for a beer. So, yeah, let's
- 42:30just go watch this shitty movie and be done with it. So have you
- 42:34seen the other Dispicable movies where you caught up? I think, I think
- 42:38so. I don't know if you've seen one Despicable Minion me. I don't
- 42:45know, because they're you know, they overlap. There's movies, there's Minion
- 42:49movies. They all kind of exist in the same cinematic universe. Yeah,
- 42:55yeah, the new m c U. Yes, loved it, Okay,
- 43:00good kids loved it. I was checking out interest rates on my phone,
- 43:05of course, yes, but I was good. I made sure there was
- 43:10no one sitting behind me before I took my phone out. I turned that,
- 43:15turned the brightness all the way down. I made sure all the sound
- 43:17was off, and I made sure no one was behind me. You know
- 43:21what, I'm surprised you didn't use the time to take a nap. Yeah
- 43:25I do, man, I had to look at interest rates. That happened
- 43:28right, right right, and all that. That's what my wife does,
- 43:30like halfway through, maybe she'll just be snoring. I had to fill her
- 43:35in, Like what happened at that part? Well, yeah, it was
- 43:38like a quiet place last week she did that. I'm like, don't sleep
- 43:42through the quiet place you snored. So funny story. I broke up with
- 43:45a girl after we went to the movies okay, and she fell asleep in
- 43:52the theater. Oh God, because I looked over at her and what she
- 43:59looked like sleeping. Yeah, I remember thinking of myself. I got waking
- 44:07up everyone when I wake up to that every day for the rest of my
- 44:10life. And the answer was no, did you tell her you come up
- 44:21with something else? No, No, I came up with something else.
- 44:23But but the thought did cross my mind that she's out. I could get
- 44:30up and leave. Yeah, she wouldn't know, you know, until the
- 44:34until the credits are rolling and people are walking by the dude sweeping the floor,
- 44:37and she'd be like and she'd have to you know, this is before
- 44:43uber was a thing, so she'd taxi or somebody she knew. Yeah,
- 44:47but no, I took her home. That's funny. I never called her
- 44:52back. I woke her. I woke her up and took her home.
- 44:57Yeah. Oh, Daniel, Daniel. I got an email from La Quinta
- 45:05yesterday. Oh yes, and I had half of my bill refunded because I
- 45:13sent them all the all the pictures of how yeah terrible my room was.
- 45:17Yeah, well, I I talked with the manager. I emailed with the
- 45:21manager like a month ago, and because I told him I used the government
- 45:29rate to book the room. Yeah, and you used the regular rate and
- 45:34your room was fine and mine was a ship hole. And he replied that,
- 45:37you know, we don't we don't. We don't do that. We
- 45:39don't choose bookings like that. And I said, oh yeah, And I
- 45:43sent them all the pictures and I said, my buddy was in this room
- 45:45and I was in this room, go look at the new self. And
- 45:49he didn't reply. So I emailed corporate and said the same thing and told
- 45:53him, you know, I emailed this guy and I sent him all the
- 45:55pictures. He just didn't respond. So I got another email from him the
- 46:00other day saying, oh, I didn't get the email with all of your
- 46:02pictures, but here's half of your bill refunded to your car and you should
- 46:07see it tomorrow. So I was like, okay, all right, good
- 46:09nice. Oh and then that's why you were like, let's go to the
- 46:12movies kids. Yeah, exactly. In the movie Packing Up, Daddy's got
- 46:17money to burn that's right, Come on, minions, let's go. Yeah
- 46:23all right, So do you have a cheap movie theater in your town or
- 46:25do you have like because there's different levels of movie theater, it's like you
- 46:30got the expensive one, now you got the cheap one. The old town
- 46:34I lived in, Poughkeepsie used to have a used to have a cheap theater
- 46:38that had like two dollars movies. Yeah, and they went out about ten
- 46:43or fifteen years ago. But even ten or fifteen years ago, two dollars
- 46:46movies was was a deal. Yeah, yeah, so they weren't. They
- 46:51weren't first run. It was stuff that had been out for forty five days
- 46:53or ninety days or whatever at that point. But on Tuesdays, So buck
- 47:00right one on Tuesdays? Can we have a theater like that? I can
- 47:05remember not even looking to see what was playing, just going to the theater
- 47:10and and just looking up the thing and be like, I don't know,
- 47:14let's go see that. If it sucks, we'll get up and leave its
- 47:15dollars. Yeah, yeah, yeah, we we have a theater like that.
- 47:20It was it was a two dollar theater up until COVID and then because
- 47:24all the chains shut down during COVID, this one was still open, so
- 47:29it started getting first run movies. Oh so so they went from two dollars
- 47:34to six overnight. Yeah, because of the first run. So they are
- 47:37still six dollar theater, but they get the first like it's it's cheaper.
- 47:43It's a crappier theater. Yeah, but yeah, and the they don't do
- 47:47the you can't select your seats. It's it's old style. You gotta just
- 47:52walk in. Yeah. Yeah, so I mean across the river. So
- 47:57it's about a fifteen minute drive. There's one. There's one like that where
- 48:02it's I think it's six or seven dollars a ticket instead of twelve or whatever.
- 48:07This you know, I don't even look. I don't even look.
- 48:10That's that's the thing. You know. We're going there for the experience.
- 48:14I don't even right. You know, my son sometimes he's like, we
- 48:17can get the reclining seats. Sure, sure, because someday he'll be sitting
- 48:22there telling his grandkids. You know, it used to be this thing called
- 48:27the movie theater and Pop Pop took it to me right time and it was
- 48:30great, and that's that's why we're there. So see, I've got the
- 48:37they have the regal movie Pass because we have out here, so it's like
- 48:40twenty bucks a month. You can go anytime you want, as many times
- 48:44as you want. So I thought that failed. Didn't you buy that?
- 48:47Three years ago there was one of those movie past. Yeah, movie past,
- 48:52the whole the whole system imploded. Yeah, movie pass because if you
- 48:57you went right theater seven times a week. Yeah yeah, No. Now
- 49:01now that the actual chains have their own, so like AMC has their own,
- 49:07Regal has their own, I think cinemas has their own. Yeah,
- 49:13so like it worked, like when I was out in New York, it
- 49:15worked there. I went to a movie so yeah, yeah, I think
- 49:22I saw it was four movies last week, and then I saw one last
- 49:25night. Oh well it was over one hundred degrees. So my wife,
- 49:31yeah, you know, it's hot, that's air condition. That's That's what
- 49:37I'm gonna do today. Yeah yeah, all right. I was like,
- 49:40we'll just do movie weeks, We'll see everything. Yeah, that's kind of
- 49:45what I'm planning. So yeah, So I saw Bad Boys, The Quiet
- 49:49Place, Blazing Saddles, which was hilarious. So that was the cheap movie
- 49:54theater. So I saw that for like five bucks and then you have like
- 50:00refillable cups, but oh cool, you can bring so you get three dollars
- 50:04drinks. It used to be two dollars, but they're going up right right,
- 50:09But that's what's the cheapest state. Our theater does refillable drinks and refillable
- 50:16popcorn. Yeah, the same visit, so I taught my son. Now
- 50:22he tells his friend, on your way out of the theater, dump it
- 50:27all in the garbage, fill it up again, take it out the doors.
- 50:31Yeah. You know, there's a there is slushy in the fridge in
- 50:37my house. There's a there's a a two gallon ziploc bag full of movie
- 50:43theater popcorn, which stays. It stays pretty good. Yeah yeah, if
- 50:47you put it in the ziploc bag, it stays pretty good. You ever
- 50:51put tabasco on popcorn? Oh yeah, that's good, that's good. I
- 50:55had her friend one time. He bought a a trash bag full of popcorn
- 51:00from the movie because it was the last showing. We were walking out,
- 51:05they were closing down. They're just like whatever, sure, and they just
- 51:07filled up a whole trash can. Yeah, trash bag, yeah, like
- 51:12the big, the big black bag. Yeah yeah. Yeah. Security guard.
- 51:17At the end of the night, Dunkin Donuts would would drag a black
- 51:22plastic garbage bag full of donuts out to the dumpster and if you were in
- 51:27the right place at the right time, whoa yeah, each in there first,
- 51:31Yeah, yeah, yeah, full of donuts. There you go there.
- 51:36I used to do that when I worked at Papa John's. Walmart had
- 51:38a half priced chicken after eight you know, that's been sitting on the rack
- 51:43all day, so it was kind of fifty to fifty. Would it taste
- 51:45like beef jerky or would it taste like chicken? Is that like like Dale
- 51:52chicken? Yeah? Yeah, it's like how long has it been on the
- 51:54warmer? About eight hours? So that's who all right. But I was
- 52:01cheap. I had no money. This is before the wife, so yeah,
- 52:06it's like when you're broke, you gotta do anything to eat. So
- 52:09you're tired of pizza and it's like, I want something else, well not
- 52:14not not, not anything. So he was he was also hanging out by
- 52:21the Dumbstayah, that's right, that's right, Oh my god, that's right.
- 52:25Yeah. Well, I worked at Papa John's. I saw a guy,
- 52:29a homeless guy, and I was taking out the garbage. Yeah,
- 52:32and about throw it over and he pops up and he has like a piece
- 52:37of pizza in his mouth, and I'm like, oh, disgusting because that
- 52:42you know, that pizza is sitting there for days. So just come inside
- 52:46and we'll give you one. Yeah, you know, we'll give you a
- 52:50fresh one. He's like, all right, but that guy was a mess
- 52:55because he always came by and harrasses so that sucks. Yeah, all right,
- 53:01well I guess on that note, Yeah, that's the weirdest ending in
- 53:05treck Cast history. I mean we stopped talking stop talking about Star Trek a
- 53:10while ago. So, oh, I had a Star Trek question, you
- 53:15know, yeah, random, I have random Star Trek thoughts. Random,
- 53:20I've random, I have random Star Trek thoughts. And it occurred to me
- 53:25in the Star Trek universe. Does science fiction exist? Oh we Captain Proton.
- 53:38No no, no, no, no, no, that's science of
- 53:42the past. I'm talking about to people who live in the twenty fifth century.
- 53:45Oh right, science write science fiction about what life is going to be
- 53:51like in one hundred years. That's an interesting question. Or or have they
- 53:58just come to the realization that, you know, we're we are the pinnacle
- 54:00of human development there, and you know, well, that'd be a cool
- 54:06episode because you could have like a writer go on the ship and wants to
- 54:12do kind of a ride along or whatever, just get experience, and that'd
- 54:16be a cool episode. And then something happens or does it totally exist but
- 54:22we can't even conceive of it, yeah, because it would be so far
- 54:28advanced past, Like I don't know, I just think, try and explain
- 54:37programmable matter to someone, to a sci fi writer from the forties, yeah,
- 54:42maybe, like that doesn't even make sense, right, Yeah, yeah,
- 54:52huh, that's an interesting thought. I'd never thought about that or even
- 54:54or even is it a thing where science progresses so quickly rapidly, Yeah,
- 55:00so rapidly in the twentieth century that science fiction isn't practical. It doesn't make
- 55:08sense to write it. So they just don't. Hmm, oh, look
- 55:14at this long enough to wake the captain. Wow, the captain Scott says,
- 55:20good morning morning. Yeah, who oh, holiness, his holiness,
- 55:27yes, holiness, let me take my hat off a wall bow. That's
- 55:34right. I hope he didn't see the slouch. Oh, yes, all
- 55:40right, help, Yeah, I think so, I'm not certain He is
- 55:45always home, sir. He's always home and always in our hearts and our
- 55:51hearts. That's right, he's working on that beard. He's like, yes,
- 55:55yes, he's lessened for the hair to grow. He's like yes,
- 56:00now he's just laughing. Now he's just laughing. Yeah, he's got to
- 56:04be just for me. He's got to be careful growing that beard because it
- 56:08would make his gigantic head look even bigger, like a bobblehead. Just dropping,
- 56:15I felt like like a funk co pop. Oh god, alright,
- 56:22well I think on that note. All right. Yeah, we'll call it
- 56:27and we'll see you guys. I guess next week, okay, next week.
- 56:30Sure, what do you guys talk about next week? It's the big
- 56:34four hundred episode. We're trying to do something special. Okay, so we're
- 56:37gonna talk about the size of Scott's head. That's right, thanks, right,
- 56:40for fifty seven minutes straight. His head, His head is so big.
- 56:46Yes, see you guys later. All right, This is Captain Benjamin
- 56:52Cisco of Deep Space nine and Space God to the Bajorans. I have a
- 56:57mission for you. This falls outside of starfleet, guy, so I can't
