- 3:19Speaker 3: as a w v RC media event, done a lot
- 3:23Speaker 3: of work to pull this thing off, and it's getting closer, girls.
- 3:27Speaker 6: It absolutely is. We're actually live from the venue right now.
- 3:31Speaker 6: We are getting everything together. We have put more steps
- 3:35Speaker 6: in this morning than we probably do in six months.
- 3:38Speaker 6: So yeah, we're pumped and we're getting.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Ready wait till the show starts. But you know, you
- 3:42Speaker 3: guys have been doing this for some time. You know
- 3:44Speaker 3: how it goes. It all will kick off Saturday and
- 3:47Speaker 3: Sunday in Morgantown there at Myland Park. This is again
- 3:51Speaker 3: a huge event. I know, I know Chris Lawrence is
- 3:53Speaker 3: going to be doing the show live from there. Give
- 3:55Speaker 3: us and I did put up a new graphic this
- 3:58Speaker 3: morning on my social media. It's on Dave Aland Radio,
- 4:00Speaker 3: so you can take a look at it and the
- 4:02Speaker 3: listeners can take a look at it and see everything
- 4:04Speaker 3: that you have got crammed into this two day event.
- 4:07Speaker 3: I don't know how you are going to pull all
- 4:09Speaker 3: this off, but I know you will, so just talk
- 4:11Speaker 3: about it a little bit.
- 4:14Speaker 5: Schedule, schedule, schedule. Speaking of schedules, we have a ton
- 4:20Speaker 5: of seminars going on both Saturday and Sunday. Reptiles Live
- 4:25Speaker 5: with the Zoology Zone Science Center will be here again
- 4:28Speaker 5: this year with shows on Saturday and Sunday. And come
- 4:31Speaker 5: out and meet Britney the Python and the alligators the kids.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Hold on Britney the Python. Yes, the python's name is Britney.
- 4:43Speaker 6: It is She is named after Britney spears O.
- 4:48Speaker 3: I was gonna say, I mean, of all the names
- 4:50Speaker 3: for a python, I don't think Britney would make the cut.
- 4:52Speaker 3: But okay, I get the COMI I get it now.
- 4:55Speaker 6: She's a big yellow python and Brittany iconically came out
- 4:59Speaker 6: with a python around her neck that was yellow. So
- 5:01Speaker 6: that's Brittany got her name.
- 5:03Speaker 3: I got it, I got it? What else you got?
- 5:07Speaker 5: Hunt Schuff'll be here doing a wild game cooking demonstration
- 5:11Speaker 5: that afterwards you get to try which is amazing. And
- 5:18Speaker 5: then we closed the show on Sunday with our famous
- 5:21Speaker 5: lightsaber show. You know, we needed someone in a pinch
- 5:24Speaker 5: a couple of years ago, so we we got the
- 5:27Speaker 5: Outer Room Praxium Lightsaber School to come in and do
- 5:30Speaker 5: a demonstration, and it was so big. We've booked them
- 5:33Speaker 5: every year since we have.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Yeah, I remember that. I was there at the show
- 5:37Speaker 3: a couple of years ago and they said there's going
- 5:41Speaker 3: to be a lightsaber show and I thought, Okay, what
- 5:43Speaker 3: exactly is it? That was amazing. I actually saw that
- 5:46Speaker 3: in person a couple of years ago. That was absolutely amazing.
- 5:50Speaker 6: Yeah, they always put on a great show. And it's
- 5:52Speaker 6: funny because they're like, oh, are you having that for
- 5:54Speaker 6: the kids, And we're not fooled. There are my adults
- 5:56Speaker 6: that that stand around and watch that show than there
- 5:58Speaker 6: are kids.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Well, I mean, you're exactly right, because most adults are
- 6:02Speaker 3: just kids at heart anyway. And if you talk start
- 6:04Speaker 3: talking about lightsabers, that's part of a generation, you know,
- 6:07Speaker 3: the seventies and eighties and even some nineties kids that
- 6:10Speaker 3: are all all yeah, one percent, I'm all about that.
- 6:13Speaker 3: And I've talked about this harsh winter that we've had
- 6:15Speaker 3: and I know folks in the skiing industry loved it,
- 6:17Speaker 3: but not everybody else did. And people are going to
- 6:20Speaker 3: be willing and willing and able to get outside and
- 6:24Speaker 3: looking forward to it and spend a little time in
- 6:25Speaker 3: the great outdoors and h And the weather looks good.
- 6:28Speaker 3: So if you're coming, I know a lot of folks
- 6:30Speaker 3: make that trip up up to Morgantown for the show
- 6:32Speaker 3: from the Charleston are and Beckley area and other areas.
- 6:34Speaker 3: Weather looks fine this weekend, great time, especially if you're
- 6:38Speaker 3: into the fishing thing. It would be a great time
- 6:40Speaker 3: to kind of, you know, get those fire stoked a
- 6:42Speaker 3: little bit about getting out on the water.
- 6:45Speaker 6: Oh yeah, absolutely. We have so many places vendors for
- 6:49Speaker 6: fishing this year and we are bringing the outdoors in.
- 6:53Speaker 6: We have a fishing Frenzy trout pond that we are
- 6:56Speaker 6: bringing in for people to you know, practice their cast
- 7:00Speaker 6: and there are going to be a bunch of trout
- 7:02Speaker 6: in there, but they're only going to be four golden trout.
- 7:04Speaker 6: Do you catch a golden trout, you get a prize.
- 7:07Speaker 3: That's pretty cool. What kind of prizes we talk I mean,
- 7:09Speaker 3: you don't want to give too much of it away.
- 7:10Speaker 3: But some pretty cool prizes.
- 7:13Speaker 6: Oh my goodness, So that one has a gift card
- 7:16Speaker 6: giveaway from ihop, But we have so many prizes to
- 7:19Speaker 6: give away. We give away a prize every hour on
- 7:22Speaker 6: the hour, and then at the end of the show
- 7:25Speaker 6: we have some grand prizes that are awesome. We have
- 7:27Speaker 6: a thirteen gun corner cabinet from our family craft shop.
- 7:31Speaker 6: We have an Edison electric bike from high Q Fun Cars.
- 7:35Speaker 6: We have a blue Wave Big Fish one O three
- 7:37Speaker 6: pedal drive kayak from Mountaineer RV. And we have a
- 7:40Speaker 6: one of a kind bird hunt with an overnight cabin
- 7:43Speaker 6: stay for two at hunter Ridge, Wing and Clay.
- 7:45Speaker 3: And I'm looking right now at that graphic I referenced
- 7:48Speaker 3: earlier that electric bike. Man, these electric bike things have
- 7:51Speaker 3: become really, really popular, and you're going to be giving
- 7:54Speaker 3: one of those away.
- 7:56Speaker 6: Oh yeah, it's been sitting in my office for a
- 7:59Speaker 6: month to give away. But I told somebody, you know,
- 8:03Speaker 6: I know the phrases you never forget how to ride
- 8:06Speaker 6: a bike, But that's not true. That's not true at all.
- 8:09Speaker 5: That is not true because I tried to ride it
- 8:11Speaker 5: down the hallway the other day and it didn't work
- 8:14Speaker 5: out so well.
- 8:14Speaker 7: You know.
- 8:15Speaker 3: I would love to see the surveillance video of that.
- 8:19Speaker 3: I would love to see you know you guys trying
- 8:21Speaker 3: to ride that down the hallway. Girls. I appreciate you
- 8:24Speaker 3: being here again. The event is going to be Saturday
- 8:27Speaker 3: and Sunday. It's presented by CANAM and it's the Western

- 8:33Speaker 3: at Myland Park in Morgantown. Saturday hours are from nine
- 8:36Speaker 3: am till seven pm. Sunday hours nine twel four. Chris
- 8:39Speaker 3: Lawrence will be doing his show there, giveaways of all kinds,
- 8:42Speaker 3: something for everybody. If you love the great outdoors, even
- 8:44Speaker 3: if you don't. If you're like me and you just
- 8:46Speaker 3: want to know about the food, You've got food demonstrations
- 8:48Speaker 3: as well, and you can learn more at wv Outdoor

- 13:48Speaker 3: of those questions. I can tell you that we have

- 14:08Speaker 3: the show our good friend from the city of Nitro,
- 14:10Speaker 3: Joe Stevens. Good morning, sir, How are you?
- 14:13Speaker 8: Good morning, David.
- 14:14Speaker 7: I'm doing well.
- 14:15Speaker 8: I hope you are too.
- 14:16Speaker 3: Is it baseball season yet?
- 14:19Speaker 8: Spring training? And unfortunately for my wife, the scores have
- 14:24Speaker 8: started coming in.
- 14:25Speaker 7: And even though.
- 14:25Speaker 8: It's you know, practice play, I still watch to see
- 14:29Speaker 8: how the O's are doing well.
- 14:30Speaker 3: The Reds won yesterday. I have a kep up with
- 14:32Speaker 3: their overall schedule in preseason, but I think they did
- 14:36Speaker 3: pick up a win yesterday. And like any sports fan
- 14:39Speaker 3: of any team, hope springs eternal for our respective baseball teams, right.
- 14:43Speaker 8: Sir, Hey, it's baseball and let's go all right?
- 14:48Speaker 3: All right? So in Nitro, you got a big event
- 14:51Speaker 3: happening coming up on March the six. We want to
- 14:53Speaker 3: give people plenty of time to plan for. It's a
- 14:55Speaker 3: week away. What do you get going on there, Joe.
- 14:58Speaker 8: Well, a couple of weeks ago, wife and I, Angie
- 15:00Speaker 8: and I we were up at the Regal Cinema at
- 15:03Speaker 8: the Nitro Marketplace to see a movie and flight risk
- 15:08Speaker 8: in fact, and in the previews there came out a
- 15:13Speaker 8: preview for a documentary entitled Brothers After War. And you know, sometimes,
- 15:19Speaker 8: just like you and I, the light bulb just goes off.
- 15:22Speaker 8: I mean it might be by mistake, but it still
- 15:24Speaker 8: goes off. But go ahead, I resemble that remark. But
- 15:29Speaker 8: nonetheless I looked at Angie. I said, that is a
- 15:33Speaker 8: perfect promotion for the Nitro Convention Visitors Bureau and the
- 15:38Speaker 8: Nitro History and Wars Museum to combine efforts and to
- 15:43Speaker 8: provide a showing, the showing at the Regal Cinema for
- 15:46Speaker 8: area veterans and for active servicemen and women. So we
- 15:51Speaker 8: got a hold of the general manager at the Regal
- 15:54Speaker 8: Cinema and we have put together a free viewing of this.
- 16:00Speaker 8: This is a movie. This is a documentary that is
- 16:03Speaker 8: being showed across the country right now in the various
- 16:06Speaker 8: regal cinemas. But again it's called Brothers After War and
- 16:10Speaker 8: we have a special showing of it on March sixth,
- 16:13Speaker 8: like you said, at six pm. So it was a
- 16:17Speaker 8: natural because Nitro was formed because of World War One
- 16:21Speaker 8: and the production of gunpowder to support the military efforts.
- 16:25Speaker 3: Talking to Joe Stevens from the City of Nitro and
- 16:27Speaker 3: the Nitro Convention of VISARs Bureau talk about the film itself.
- 16:30Speaker 3: What is the whole idea behind the film?
- 16:33Speaker 8: Well, Brothers After War combines footage from the movies producers
- 16:38Speaker 8: time embedded with the elite soldiers and marines during the
- 16:43Speaker 8: height of the Iraq War, and it's got present day
- 16:46Speaker 8: reunions in it. They capture the resilience and the humanity
- 16:51Speaker 8: of everybody who served. The documentary basically invites audiences to
- 16:58Speaker 8: experience the raw all and and just the stories the
- 17:03Speaker 8: journeys of the veterans and they talk. You can go online,
- 17:07Speaker 8: you can google Brothers at After War and see the
- 17:11Speaker 8: trailer and if you're like me, you just step back
- 17:14Speaker 8: and you go wow wow.
- 17:17Speaker 3: I mean, it sounds like it's a fascinating peace and
- 17:20Speaker 3: it's going to be shown, as you said, And I
- 17:22Speaker 3: love this the fact that Joe, it's free for veterans
- 17:25Speaker 3: and current active service members and their families. It's going
- 17:28Speaker 3: to meet March sixth, And I don't know, Joe, I
- 17:32Speaker 3: don't know if there's any other city in a state
- 17:34Speaker 3: of West Virginia that goes above and beyond for veterans,
- 17:37Speaker 3: as the city of Nitro does. Like you said, this
- 17:39Speaker 3: is a city that was formed out of out of
- 17:41Speaker 3: out of the war effort, so to speak.
- 17:45Speaker 8: And David, and we're proud of that, we really are.
- 17:47Speaker 8: We have the Living Memorial Park, we have the Veterans
- 17:49Speaker 8: Memorial Flag Area, and we do quite a few things
- 17:53Speaker 8: for the veterans. I mean, they serve so that we
- 17:55Speaker 8: can have what we have today. And you you above
- 17:59Speaker 8: all ill understand that fully and with your dad's your
- 18:04Speaker 8: dad's involvement and everything, but you know, Dave, it's just
- 18:08Speaker 8: a way to say thank you, and it's the veterans.
- 18:11Speaker 8: It's also, like I said, free for the service. Active
- 18:14Speaker 8: servicemen and women and their families come on out. We're
- 18:18Speaker 8: actually we've invited the Junior Air Force rotwos ROTC students
- 18:24Speaker 8: over at Nitro High School. They'll be joining us that night.
- 18:27Speaker 8: And one thing I'd like to mention Dave is there's
- 18:30Speaker 8: going to be exhibits in the lobby. So the movie
- 18:32Speaker 8: will start at six o'clock. Get there a little early,
- 18:35Speaker 8: but we will have information boosts for from the VA
- 18:39Speaker 8: the West Virginia, VA will be there if you've got
- 18:41Speaker 8: any questions, and also the Crisis Suicide Prevention Team will
- 18:46Speaker 8: be there if you've got need to talk to somebody
- 18:49Speaker 8: along those lines. So it's going to be information and
- 18:52Speaker 8: it's going to be a free documentary. I think it's
- 18:54Speaker 8: going to be a good evening.
- 18:55Speaker 3: But Dave, Alan Chill and five anyline percent of Department
- 18:57Speaker 3: by Husbands Pizza this month at your local husbands get
- 18:59Speaker 3: a large at and inch Pepperoni pizza and Pepperoni calzone
- 19:02Speaker 3: twenty one ninety nine, eat in pick up or get delivery.
- 19:05Speaker 3: Find your hustands. You're at closest Hustans that is a
- 19:07Speaker 3: Hustan's Pizza dot com and Joe, I love the fact
- 19:10Speaker 3: that you are involving the young people in this as well,
- 19:13Speaker 3: because sometimes, you know, I mean we talk about and
- 19:15Speaker 3: you and I have talked about this on the show before.
- 19:17Speaker 3: When I was a kid, there were World War two,
- 19:19Speaker 3: I mean even World War One veterans around. Now there's
- 19:22Speaker 3: very few World War Two veterans left, and now you
- 19:25Speaker 3: know they're starting because time, time's a thing you can't stop,
- 19:28Speaker 3: you know, the calendar. So there's going to be a
- 19:31Speaker 3: point where there's gonna be fewer Korean War veterans, fewer
- 19:34Speaker 3: Vietnam War veterans, and so on and so forth. And
- 19:36Speaker 3: sometimes I think we get our young people involved and
- 19:39Speaker 3: they read in their in their history books and their
- 19:41Speaker 3: classes about all these wars and about military and it
- 19:45Speaker 3: kind of just, you know, it just maybe it just
- 19:47Speaker 3: gets glossed over sometime. But when you can you can
- 19:50Speaker 3: bring out these RTC groups and these student groups, and
- 19:52Speaker 3: you can let them see these stories in live and
- 19:55Speaker 3: in living color and with these displays and everything. I
- 19:58Speaker 3: think it's a very important part part of it. And
- 20:00Speaker 3: I think that you folks should be applauded for that.
- 20:03Speaker 8: Hey, well said, And we do a lot, and we
- 20:07Speaker 8: really support the Air Force Junior ROTC at Nitro High School.
- 20:12Speaker 8: They do a great job over there, Major Blue and
- 20:15Speaker 8: Sergeant Norman, and we're just happy to be able to
- 20:18Speaker 8: include them. And again at the free showing at six
- 20:22Speaker 8: o'clock this documentary, if you just watched the three and
- 20:25Speaker 8: a half minute trailer, you'll understand understand why it's important
- 20:29Speaker 8: to get this word out.
- 20:30Speaker 3: What else is going on in the boomtown of Nitro.
- 20:34Speaker 3: What else you got to tell us? Man there's always
- 20:36Speaker 3: something big going on there. What's going on?
- 20:38Speaker 8: Mark your calendar. You open the door, I'm walking through.
- 20:42Speaker 3: Go ahead, go ahead man.
- 20:44Speaker 8: April fifth, it's going to be a community celebration of
- 20:48Speaker 8: the beginning of Little League baseball. The season starts April
- 20:53Speaker 8: to fifth, and with the Nitro Little League, we're going
- 20:56Speaker 8: to have a parade at eleven o'clock of course opening games,
- 20:59Speaker 8: but some thing being added this year and we're going
- 21:02Speaker 8: to have a baseball card show at in the commons
- 21:06Speaker 8: of Nitro High School, a free kim or not with
- 21:11Speaker 8: the Nitro Antique Ball As we're having a free uh
- 21:14Speaker 8: baseball card show. We're working our best to get a
- 21:18Speaker 8: couple folks in, maybe be signing some autographs. We'll have
- 21:22Speaker 8: more news on that as we get a little bit closer, Dave.
- 21:25Speaker 8: Something that you and I can participate in is a
- 21:27Speaker 8: home run hitting contest. And the reason why you and
- 21:30Speaker 8: I can do it, it's going to be with a
- 21:32Speaker 8: whiffle ball. Yeah, exactly. It's going to be on the
- 21:37Speaker 8: Challenger field at Nitro High School. We'll be moving the
- 21:41Speaker 8: defenses in and out for the different age groups that
- 21:44Speaker 8: we'll have and for you and I they will be
- 21:47Speaker 8: right behind shortstop problems. Yeah, we'll have you and I
- 21:54Speaker 8: will have a bundant bunting or a trial, but that'll
- 21:58Speaker 8: be happening during the day. Also, we're doing a lot
- 22:03Speaker 8: of places around the Metro Valley. They do team trivia
- 22:06Speaker 8: at night in the different watering holes throughout the valley. Well,
- 22:10Speaker 8: we're doing We're doing it a little bit different this time.
- 22:13Speaker 8: We're going to do it on the jumbo tron at
- 22:16Speaker 8: Nitral High School, weather permitting, of course, and if we
- 22:18Speaker 8: have to go inside, we'll do the gym on their
- 22:20Speaker 8: junior tron as it may be. But all the questions
- 22:24Speaker 8: will be related to baseball. It'll be all baseball trivia
- 22:29Speaker 8: and you can put your team together. We've got a
- 22:32Speaker 8: team surprise here. Let's go Os will be the name
- 22:37Speaker 8: of the team, but yeah, of course, but it'll all
- 22:40Speaker 8: be baseball. That'll be starting at two o'clock and we'll
- 22:43Speaker 8: be letting people know if it's at the high school
- 22:46Speaker 8: stadium or in the gym. First prize two hundred dollars cash,
- 22:51Speaker 8: second prize one hundred dollars, Third prize will be fifty
- 22:55Speaker 8: dollars and fourth prize and autograph from Dave Allen when
- 22:58Speaker 8: your favorite whippleball and I know that'll be a collector's
- 23:02Speaker 8: item for everybody. Then we're going to top off the
- 23:05Speaker 8: evening free movie at the stadium on the Jumbo trone
- 23:09Speaker 8: weather permitting Field Dreams.
- 23:12Speaker 3: Last time I signed something like that, it turned out
- 23:14Speaker 3: to be a subpoena, so I'm not following. I'm not
- 23:16Speaker 3: following for that again.
- 23:17Speaker 7: Joe.
- 23:17Speaker 3: Sounds like you got a lot of great activities going on.
- 23:19Speaker 3: Let's go back and wrap up and give the details
- 23:22Speaker 3: again on the event March sixth.
- 23:25Speaker 8: Free showing Brothers after War. It's for veterans and servicemen
- 23:29Speaker 8: and women free March to sixth. That's six o'clock. It's
- 23:33Speaker 8: being brought to you by Nitro CBB, the Nitro History
- 23:36Speaker 8: and Wars Museum and the great folks. Hey, they're stepping
- 23:39Speaker 8: up the Regal Nitro Cinema, which is in the Nitro
- 23:43Speaker 8: Marketplace and that's right you know where Walmart, Mo's and
- 23:48Speaker 8: BW Three's and everything. It's right over there, and six
- 23:51Speaker 8: o'clock the showing will start. We can well, you know,
- 23:56Speaker 8: i'd get there a little bit earlier if you've got
- 23:58Speaker 8: some questions, because we'll have some information for you. David's
- 24:01Speaker 8: just a way to say thanks.
- 24:02Speaker 3: All right, Joe, I appreciate it. Man, sound like you
- 24:04Speaker 3: always got a lot of stuff going on in Boomtown.
- 24:06Speaker 3: We'll we'll check in with you again real soon. Best
- 24:09Speaker 3: of luck with the event on March six. Man, thanks
- 24:10Speaker 3: a lot.

- 25:11Speaker 3: and it's excellent. All right, I'll keep that in mind.
- 25:15Speaker 3: Food tips. I appreciate it, Texas. Young people today should
- 25:21Speaker 3: be educated how the government treats veterans who fought in wars.
- 25:24Speaker 3: I'm sure once they realize the government uses and uses
- 25:27Speaker 3: that abandons them, they won't be so eager to sacrifice
- 25:29Speaker 3: their mental and physical well being for corporate economics. I
- 25:33Speaker 3: will agree with the first part of that. I think
- 25:36Speaker 3: young people should be educated greatly about how our government
- 25:41Speaker 3: treats veterans and how how they were treated traditionally over
- 25:46Speaker 3: the years. And again it's a little personal for me,
- 25:48Speaker 3: and Joe kind of alluded to it. You know, my
- 25:49Speaker 3: dad was a Vietnam veteran. He died of Agent Orange poisoning,
- 25:54Speaker 3: and the stories he didn't like to talk a lot
- 25:56Speaker 3: about his service to be honest with you. But one
- 25:58Speaker 3: thing that he would talk about was the way he
- 26:00Speaker 3: was treated when he came back to America following the
- 26:03Speaker 3: Vietnam War. And it wasn't necessarily by the government, it
- 26:05Speaker 3: was by the people. But he got over it. He
- 26:07Speaker 3: was a Christian and that's that's that's what they do.
- 26:11Speaker 3: Texays Dave ding Dong. The witch is gone. Randall Reid
- 26:14Speaker 3: Smith has finally been relieved of his position as Secretary

- 26:20Speaker 3: I don't I didn't know that that was made official.
- 26:24Speaker 3: I thought it was, but I don't know if any
- 26:25Speaker 3: official statements come out about that. Continuing just last year,
- 26:31Speaker 3: he was sued for installing the illegal mural a baby
- 26:33Speaker 3: Dog and completely screwed up building the Iraq and Afghanistan
- 26:36Speaker 3: Monument at the Capital. Best wishes with Governor Morrissey to
- 26:39Speaker 3: find replacements, but the three lake and mule would be
- 26:42Speaker 3: an improvement. Wow, all right, Texas, serious question.
- 26:48Speaker 7: Well.
- 26:48Speaker 3: The information provided to veterans include the two billion dollars
- 26:51Speaker 3: in cuts and employee termination that Orange Daddy Jesus Rapist
- 26:55Speaker 3: is implementing. Harsh texts. These include reductions who I've wasteful

- 30:56Speaker 3: get in the specific reason that you're here today overall
- 31:00Speaker 3: what's going on on campus.
- 31:02Speaker 4: So right now we're enjoying a little bit of quiet
- 31:04Speaker 4: time with spring break, but we're wrapping up basketball season.
- 31:07Speaker 4: So we hosted Glenville State yesterday, split a couple of
- 31:12Speaker 4: games with them, and then we'll have West Virginia State
- 31:14Speaker 4: University on campus Saturday for the end of the season matchups. Well,
- 31:20Speaker 4: the women will be playing at two o'clock, the men
- 31:22Speaker 4: at four o'clock. Always be a full house, lots of
- 31:24Speaker 4: energy there for a little Canau Valley battles. We're looking
- 31:28Speaker 4: forward to that and hopefully moving into the Mountain East
- 31:31Speaker 4: Conference Championships on a high note.
- 31:34Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, that's always a good rivalry when you
- 31:36Speaker 3: and when the two respective schools here in the valley
- 31:40Speaker 3: get together. Yeah, you in Cage go back and forth
- 31:43Speaker 3: on that a little bit, just a little bit. Eric,
- 31:45Speaker 3: great guy.
- 31:46Speaker 4: We get along really well. And the last games we
- 31:49Speaker 4: played over at State both were one was a buzzer
- 31:54Speaker 4: beater and the other the game was decided by one basket,
- 31:57Speaker 4: so two really close contests, so hopefully will swing our
- 32:01Speaker 4: way on Saturday.
- 32:02Speaker 3: You know, we're talking with the Marty Roth, the president
- 32:05Speaker 3: of the University of Charleston, and I always know I
- 32:08Speaker 3: was like talked about to our university heads about this.
- 32:10Speaker 3: You're always keeping a close eye on the legislative session,
- 32:12Speaker 3: I know. Is there anything in particular that you're looking
- 32:15Speaker 3: for in the world of higher education out of the session.
- 32:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 32:18Speaker 4: The main thing that's important to us is we want
- 32:20Speaker 4: to make sure the dollars to help students, scholarships and
- 32:25Speaker 4: so forth, that they follow the student, and that's really
- 32:29Speaker 4: important to us. In that way, the student has a
- 32:31Speaker 4: choice about where they want to go to school, and
- 32:34Speaker 4: they can take their promise or other scholarship to that institution.
- 32:39Speaker 4: So that's something that's been a great tradition over at
- 32:43Speaker 4: the Capitol and we certainly hope that that continues. The
- 32:48Speaker 4: governor previous governor of the legislature have always been very
- 32:52Speaker 4: generous to higher education, helping us expand nursing programs given
- 32:56Speaker 4: the shortage of nursing clinicians in the area. So we're
- 33:00Speaker 4: hoping as resources are available, those funds will continue. We're
- 33:05Speaker 4: starting a program right now having two hundred and twenty
- 33:09Speaker 4: five emergency medical service personnel throughout the state enroll in
- 33:14Speaker 4: a free Leadership Certificate program that's through state funding to
- 33:19Speaker 4: help us attract and retain those important professionals we need
- 33:23Speaker 4: in emergency situations. So we're hoping as resources are available,
- 33:28Speaker 4: that we're able to assist the state government agencies and
- 33:31Speaker 4: so forth with resources to help with recruiting and retention
- 33:36Speaker 4: the professionals we need here in the state.
- 33:38Speaker 3: Now, I know you wanted to talk about the UC
- 33:40Speaker 3: Works program.
- 33:42Speaker 4: Yeah, So the U SEE Works is something that we
- 33:43Speaker 4: started this year. It's off to a great start, and
- 33:46Speaker 4: the idea is that there are always a lot of
- 33:49Speaker 4: students who just aren't thinking about college. It could be
- 33:52Speaker 4: because they just don't come from a household where mom
- 33:57Speaker 4: or dad or president or their parents haven't had an
- 34:00Speaker 4: opportunity to earn a college degree. It could be that
- 34:04Speaker 4: they're from a kind of low income situation and college
- 34:07Speaker 4: just doesn't seem to be attainable. And what we want
- 34:10Speaker 4: to do is make those students aware that there are
- 34:14Speaker 4: opportunities to get a great education here at the state
- 34:17Speaker 4: and at the University of Charleston. So the UC Works program,
- 34:21Speaker 4: we're primarily focused right now on Kenaw County, Putnam County,
- 34:25Speaker 4: kind of surrounding areas where we can provide students with
- 34:30Speaker 4: no cost of attendance. They will have free tuition coming
- 34:35Speaker 4: to the University of Charleston. So it's going to be
- 34:37Speaker 4: a combination of federal funding through the PELL grant system,
- 34:43Speaker 4: PROMISE scholarship from the state, other state funding that may
- 34:47Speaker 4: be available, and then through our donors we make up
- 34:50Speaker 4: the difference so those students will be able to enroll
- 34:53Speaker 4: at you see no cost of tuition. In addition, we
- 34:57Speaker 4: want to make sure that they have opportunities to work
- 35:00Speaker 4: all the way through college. So could be part time work,
- 35:04Speaker 4: it could be an internship, and we want that work
- 35:06Speaker 4: to be related to the area that they want to
- 35:09Speaker 4: study the profession that they want to enter. So if
- 35:11Speaker 4: they want to become a nurse, we want to get
- 35:14Speaker 4: them aligned with Charleston Area Medical Center or Thomas Memorial
- 35:20Speaker 4: so that they can get experience in nursing and when
- 35:24Speaker 4: they graduate earned their degree, they'll be ready to move
- 35:27Speaker 4: into that job. And by partnering with Workforce West Virginia,
- 35:33Speaker 4: the employers who hire these students for the part time
- 35:37Speaker 4: work or internships can get partial reimbursement for the compensation
- 35:42Speaker 4: that they provide to the students.
- 35:43Speaker 3: And I love that this sort of thing is going on,
- 35:47Speaker 3: doctor Roth, not only at the University of Charles but
- 35:49Speaker 3: at the other institutions. Is people are taking and you've
- 35:52Speaker 3: been in the higher education game for some time. It
- 35:55Speaker 3: wasn't an old reference right the way. I'm just saying,
- 35:57Speaker 3: you've been doing it for a while and in the
- 36:01Speaker 3: face of higher education and the needs have changed. And
- 36:03Speaker 3: I talk about this when I have mentioned Eric Cage,
- 36:06Speaker 3: or I have Casey Sachs or any of the others
- 36:09Speaker 3: that are on from this year, they all talk about
- 36:10Speaker 3: that that the needs of the employer are changing so much.
- 36:16Speaker 3: And I applaud higher education in general, no matter the
- 36:19Speaker 3: institution for listening to the employers and saying, okay, hey,
- 36:23Speaker 3: well instead of us just producing students and you find
- 36:25Speaker 3: a place for them, you come to us and you
- 36:27Speaker 3: tell us what you want. I know you folks are
- 36:29Speaker 3: big on that. You see.
- 36:30Speaker 4: Absolutely, It's like Wayne Gretzky used to say, you need
- 36:33Speaker 4: to skate to where the puck's going to be, not
- 36:36Speaker 4: where it was. So we're always looking forward to see
- 36:39Speaker 4: what are the areas where we need skilled workforce here
- 36:42Speaker 4: in the Kanaw Valley in West Virginia, in the Greater
- 36:45Speaker 4: Appalachian region, and we're going to try to identify ways
- 36:49Speaker 4: that we can help address those needs.
- 36:51Speaker 2: When we know that we'll be.
- 36:52Speaker 4: Able to put out a real high quality program, students
- 36:55Speaker 4: will be interested in the program, and they're going to
- 36:57Speaker 4: be great jobs on the back end. And you see
- 37:01Speaker 4: and at other institutions we're just laser focused on accessibility
- 37:05Speaker 4: and affordability. Well, unfortunately, we're in a market right now
- 37:09Speaker 4: where each year there's fewer students graduating from high school,
- 37:12Speaker 4: so we have a smaller and smaller market to draw from.
- 37:15Speaker 4: So one way to combat that is expanding the number
- 37:20Speaker 4: of students who can become eligible, who can participate in
- 37:25Speaker 4: a college experience by lowering some of the economic barriers
- 37:29Speaker 4: for them.
- 37:30Speaker 3: So again to doctor Marty rotheu Versity Charleston, Dave Aland
- 37:33Speaker 3: showing five any line brought to you a part by

- 37:50Speaker 3: you don't know can hurt you. I do want to
- 37:52Speaker 3: ask you about this about the downtown Innovation Hub. Of course,
- 37:55Speaker 3: a couple of weeks ago, we all were shocked by
- 37:57Speaker 3: the videos of the of the water main break and
- 38:00Speaker 3: downtown Charleston. In one of the scenes that I saw particularly,
- 38:04Speaker 3: it was going right by the Innovation hubub. I mean,
- 38:07Speaker 3: I'm assuming things are back to normal there. You got
- 38:08Speaker 3: that all cleaned up.
- 38:10Speaker 4: Yes, thanks for asking, Dave. Yes, we're really fortunate. It's
- 38:13Speaker 4: a kind of elevated space. So some water did come
- 38:17Speaker 4: in through the doors, but really we reached the threshold
- 38:21Speaker 4: of the stairs going up to the main flooring area,
- 38:24Speaker 4: so it was a quick cleanup. We had our doors
- 38:27Speaker 4: back open that week and we're back in action. We
- 38:31Speaker 4: now have our fourth cohort of small businesses going through
- 38:35Speaker 4: our Business Accelerator program. The program is designed to help
- 38:41Speaker 4: existing small businesses scale up and grow through a series
- 38:44Speaker 4: of workshops, coaching, advising, and networking. It's free to the participants,
- 38:50Speaker 4: last about six months and we do it twice a year.
- 38:54Speaker 4: So we have our fourth cohort, which is about halfway
- 38:57Speaker 4: through the program, and we're taking applications for the next
- 39:00Speaker 4: cohort that will start in July.
- 39:02Speaker 3: All right, good stuff going on out there at U
- 39:05Speaker 3: see best of luck this week and the athletics stuff too.
- 39:07Speaker 3: You know, I don't get involved, I don't take size,
- 39:09Speaker 3: but I just say bust to Luck as.
- 39:10Speaker 4: We appreciate it. If you want to come down to
- 39:12Speaker 4: the game on Saturday, let me know. We'll connect Jeff

- 43:12Speaker 3: And in talking to TJ earlier this morning, he's posted

- 43:19Speaker 3: social media, make sure you do because he's got a
- 43:21Speaker 3: lot of good stuff posted on his x page. Is
- 43:23Speaker 3: also an all new Facebook page for TJ Meadows. He's
- 43:27Speaker 3: got some great pictures on there from some of the
- 43:30Speaker 3: big boards, the things that they actually needed down there.
- 43:34Speaker 3: Because sometimes what happens when you have these flooding events,
- 43:38Speaker 3: people they want to help in their hearts in the
- 43:39Speaker 3: right place, but they just collect a bunch of stuff
- 43:42Speaker 3: that people don't really need, and some unfortunately they'll use
- 43:44Speaker 3: it as an opportunity. People will clean out the closets
- 43:47Speaker 3: and bring up a bunch of stuff that they really
- 43:49Speaker 3: can't use. So if you want to know what it is,
- 43:51Speaker 3: exactly that they need. Go over to TJ's social media
- 43:55Speaker 3: because he's got some pictures posted there in some ways
- 43:58Speaker 3: that you can donate as well. Speaking of that, what
- 44:02Speaker 3: an awesome event we had yesterday. You the greatest listeners
- 44:06Speaker 3: in the world. Help make it possible are Flood Drive
- 44:09Speaker 3: to collect items for the flood victims in southern West Virginia,
- 44:11Speaker 3: Members Choice, Federal Credit Union, the Charleston Dirty Roads, and
- 44:15Speaker 3: of course Union Mission helping us out with that. Check
- 44:18Speaker 3: this out. All of our stations were out there on
- 44:20Speaker 3: the lot yesterday seven am till six pm. Drum roll please.
- 44:25Speaker 3: Among the items yesterday, we collected enough bleach to fill
- 44:29Speaker 3: a full pallet. Rob Reel, who never ceases to amaze
- 44:34Speaker 3: me with what goes on in that head of his,
- 44:36Speaker 3: figured this out. We collected enough buckets yesterday to create
- 44:41Speaker 3: a stack of buckets that were four stories high. Particularly,
- 44:46Speaker 3: one of the top two or three items that they
- 44:48Speaker 3: had asked for was buckets. We had enough buckets yesterday
- 44:52Speaker 3: to create a stack that would have been four stories
- 44:55Speaker 3: high had it been a building. We had some apple
- 45:00Speaker 3: producers out of the Eastern Panhandle. I'm talking about the
- 45:03Speaker 3: Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia that heard what we were
- 45:07Speaker 3: doing and drove here from completely on the other end
- 45:12Speaker 3: of the states and donated over a half ton of apples. Hey,
- 45:18Speaker 3: we'll take it. And we also raised over well over
- 45:23Speaker 3: three thousand dollars in cash and we've turning all that
- 45:27Speaker 3: over to Union Mission. So again, thank you so much
- 45:30Speaker 3: to Federal of the Member Swiss Federal Credit Union, West Virginia,
- 45:33Speaker 3: the Charleston Dirty Birds and Union Mission, and also to
- 45:36Speaker 3: Chick fil A. Tom Minturn and those folks are absolutely fantastic.
- 45:40Speaker 3: Anytime we have an event going on here, they say, hey,
- 45:43Speaker 3: we want to provide lunch not only for your staff,
- 45:46Speaker 3: but also lunch for you volunteers, because we have a
- 45:49Speaker 3: lot of volunteers that come out to help with these
- 45:50Speaker 3: events as well. And Tom and the folks at Chick
- 45:53Speaker 3: fil A does a great job of pybody lunch for us.
- 45:55Speaker 3: We certainly do appreciate that. But more importantly, I want
- 45:58Speaker 3: to say thank you to you the great listeners in
- 46:00Speaker 3: the world. And not to be too corny here, but
- 46:03Speaker 3: when you hear the words that you hear on all
- 46:06Speaker 3: of our stations, proud to live here too, it really
- 46:10Speaker 3: means something to us here of the stations of WVRC Media.
- 46:14Speaker 3: We are a West Virginia owned and operated company based
- 46:17Speaker 3: right here in Charleston, also in Morgantown, and being a
- 46:20Speaker 3: West Virginia company that employs a lot of West Virginians,
- 46:24Speaker 3: it means something to us. It really does to be
- 46:27Speaker 3: able to help out those in need. Coming up on
- 46:30Speaker 3: tomorrow's show, Hannah Gardner from the Kannaala Charleston Humaine Association
- 46:33Speaker 3: will be here with this week's Adopt Me Please pet
- 46:35Speaker 3: of the Week State ad Commissioner Kent Leonhardt. We'll be
- 46:37Speaker 3: talking about the Winter Blues farmers Market event that's happening
- 46:40Speaker 3: at the Connell Steama Convention Center this weekend. Casey Sachs
- 46:44Speaker 3: from Bridge Valley will be stopping by doctor Casey Sacks,
- 46:46Speaker 3: president of the Bridge Valley, and I'm going to introduce
- 46:49Speaker 3: you to a lady by the name of Marnie Rustmeyer.
- 46:53Speaker 3: Now she's a native of Charleston and she's now living
- 46:56Speaker 3: in New York City and she's doing some really remarkable
- 46:59Speaker 3: things in the world of cosmetic care, particularly for those
- 47:03Speaker 3: who have suffered with breast cancer. She's going to join
- 47:06Speaker 3: us in studio tomorrow. She's making a return trip to Charleston,
- 47:10Speaker 3: back to her hometown, so we are going to talk
- 47:12Speaker 3: to her on the show tomorrow. Texas twenty years of
- 47:18Speaker 3: Afghanistan and Iraqi wars and look how those ended. Our
- 47:21Speaker 3: current president, during his first term negotiated the release of
- 47:24Speaker 3: five thousand Taliban fighters that took over the country when
- 47:27Speaker 3: the last president high tailed troops out of it, blood,
- 47:29Speaker 3: sweat and tears or sacrifice for the whims and politics
- 47:32Speaker 3: of economics. The VA is threatened by the chainsaw of
- 47:35Speaker 3: a South African whose fortune has built on American tax
- 47:38Speaker 3: subsidies and who is complaining the government spends too much
- 47:41Speaker 3: and is bloated. Texas, Dave, congratulations and thank you for
- 47:45Speaker 3: collecting supplies for the flood victim's great job. To everyone involved, Well,
- 47:48Speaker 3: that was our company and not me. It was our
- 47:51Speaker 3: company and it was again the folks from a member's
- 47:54Speaker 3: choice Federal Credit Union, the Charleston Dirty Birds and Union
- 47:57Speaker 3: Mission and you the greatest listeners in the world. Lead
- 48:00Speaker 3: story this morning wv Metronews dot com. Four counties have
- 48:04Speaker 3: now been named major disaster areas by President Trump, that
- 48:07Speaker 3: declaration coming down late yesterday evening. The counties are McDowell, Mercer,
- 48:12Speaker 3: Mingo and Wyoming. The disaster assistance has been approved, meaning
- 48:16Speaker 3: in the statement from FEMA assistants this is their quote here.
- 48:21Speaker 3: Assistants can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs,
- 48:25Speaker 3: low cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other
- 48:28Speaker 3: programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the
- 48:32Speaker 3: effects of the disaster. End quote. Now, Governor Morrissey's public
- 48:36Speaker 3: assistance request is still being reviewed. We understand by FEMA
- 48:40Speaker 3: the governor out with the statement thanking President Trump and
- 48:43Speaker 3: others for getting this done. And look, I applaud all
- 48:46Speaker 3: involved as well. I know our Washington delegation was also
- 48:49Speaker 3: involved in it, so hats off to them. And I'm
- 48:53Speaker 3: still this is just me, Dave, still holding down hope
- 48:57Speaker 3: that somehow the President will somehow a knowledge in words
- 49:01Speaker 3: written or spoken the flood victims. Considering that the era
- 49:06Speaker 3: of the area is impacted, or southern West Virginia and
- 49:10Speaker 3: eastern Kentucky and some of the areas where the President
- 49:13Speaker 3: had the most support across the country period, I mean
- 49:18Speaker 3: that part of it shouldn't matter. And you heard me
- 49:21Speaker 3: talking about it earlier this week and on my social
- 49:23Speaker 3: media pages as well, So I will let that go,
- 49:26Speaker 3: but still still holding out hope that maybe President will
- 49:30Speaker 3: at least acknowledge the areas that were flooded. Don't hold
- 49:35Speaker 3: your bread. Maybe you will. Maybe I'm wrong, and we
- 49:37Speaker 3: got to FEMA. You know they you know, God bless
- 49:40Speaker 3: them for that. But still a couple of words here
- 49:44Speaker 3: wouldn't hurt. But Dave Island show the five any librety

- 50:00Speaker 3: governor is he going to downsize state government to consolidate
- 50:03Speaker 3: departments as Doze is doing with the federal government. Well,
- 50:06Speaker 3: you know, if you listen to the state of the
- 50:07Speaker 3: state Governor Patrick Morrissey said, and he kind of alluded
- 50:11Speaker 3: to President Trump that there were some inefficiencies in state
- 50:15Speaker 3: government and he wanted to look at him. So I
- 50:16Speaker 3: don't know of anything official. There's been talk of consolidating
- 50:19Speaker 3: various departments. So we shall see Texas day. Thank you
- 50:24Speaker 3: President Trump for doing so many positive things in such
- 50:27Speaker 3: a short time for our state and our country announced
- 50:31Speaker 3: yesterday that the TBT, the Basketball Tournament will be back
- 50:34Speaker 3: in Charleston for the first time since twenty twenty two.
- 50:37Speaker 3: Announcement coming down yesterday sixty four teams, one million dollars
- 50:40Speaker 3: per Charleston, of course, one of the regional sites for
- 50:43Speaker 3: the tournament. It's going to be held July eighteenth through
- 50:45Speaker 3: the twenty third here in the capital city. I'll have
- 50:48Speaker 3: Tim Brady, who's the head of the Charleston Convention and
- 50:51Speaker 3: Visitors Bureau, on the show on Monday to talk about it.
- 50:55Speaker 3: Another big economic shot in the arm for the city.
- 50:57Speaker 3: I want to close with this though, for anyone who
