- 0:18trying to prove yourself and instead have more calm and success in your business and life. Enjoy.
- 0:28Well hello welcome back today
- 0:32we are talking about overwhelm and how
- 0:36it relates to burnout and
- 0:40just everything else and i know that a lot of people
- 0:42are kind of allergic to that word overwhelm when
- 0:46i bring it up with clients and i say it sounds
- 0:49like you're overwhelmed they're very defensive
- 0:52like no I'm not overwhelmed I'm
- 0:56just stressed and tired and not
- 1:00able to motivate and having a hard
- 1:03time focusing on my priorities but I'm not overwhelmed I'm just getting emotional
- 1:08in meetings and I can't figure out what is the best place where I should focus
- 1:14my energy like everything feels like it's on top of one another like I'm pretty
- 1:20sure that's the definition of overwhelm,
- 1:22but we get defensive about it because overwhelm makes it seem like,
- 1:28that word makes it seem like somehow we're failing.
- 1:32And we don't like to fail. And I think this is something that my coach talked
- 1:37to me about, this idea of not wanting to fail. It's a big one for me personally. I'm super competitive.
- 1:45I'm also very competitive with myself, which means that I do not want to fail.
- 1:51I want to do something for the first time, and I want to be able to do it perfectly.
- 1:58I want to do everything well. Maybe perfect is not even the right word to use.
- 2:04I just want to be able to pick it up and do it well.
- 2:07I don't want to drop balls. I don't want people to feel like I'm not focused,
- 2:11that I'm not present, that I'm not organized.
- 2:16I really want to show up in a way that presents professionalism and clarity.
- 2:23And I don't want to be someone who seems like they could fail at something.
- 2:31But in reality, we can't do everything well.
- 2:36And I know your brain is like, oh, but I can, because that's where my brain goes. Well, I can.
- 2:42But the truth is when we're feeling overwhelmed, when we're feeling like there
- 2:48are too many things to try to manage, and we are dropping balls and then we're
- 2:53getting defensive about dropping those balls and then we're really,
- 2:58running away from the truth and
- 3:01the truth is we can't handle it all and
- 3:04we do need to pause and we do need to reflect on what the highest priorities
- 3:09are that first step is accepting i feel overwhelmed it's too much for me right
- 3:17now and allowing ourselves to not believe that,
- 3:22means somehow we're a failure.
- 3:25It's okay. It's okay to ask for help. It's okay to reprioritize.
- 3:31It's okay to make decisions that are different than the decisions you made previously.
- 3:38So if you're running a business and you decided you wanted to work with one niche,
- 3:45one type of client, and somehow it's not feeling aligned and you keep pushing,
- 3:51pushing, pushing to make it work, but it's not working,
- 3:55But if you give it up, if you drop this focus of your business,
- 3:59you're going to feel like a failure. So you just keep pushing.
- 4:03That's not better. It's okay to just stop and take a pause and look at all the things on your plate.
- 4:10I have a client who has a lot going on in her personal life.
- 4:15And she is very emotional in our calls.
- 4:19And there's nothing wrong with that. I'm here for it. but what
- 4:22I can see that's happening is she's
- 4:26pushing herself harder at work because the
- 4:29stuff in her personal life feels out of control so she
- 4:32wants to control the things happening at
- 4:35work and it's just not working she has
- 4:38a team and she has people who work differently than she does and they have a
- 4:43different vision for things and a different style and that's all good we want
- 4:49teams who have a variety of ways of working and different points of views and
- 4:54different ways of looking at a problem.
- 4:57And if you're a manager who's trying to really control and micromanage that
- 5:03process and tell everybody that they have to do things a certain way,
- 5:06you're going to lose a lot of motivation and productivity, and you're going
- 5:11to lose a lot of creativity.
- 5:14And I don't care what business you're in. Creativity is always a benefit because
- 5:19it means that people are looking at problems and ways to solve problems in new ways. That's creative.
- 5:26You don't have to be an artist to be creative. It's about creative problem solving.
- 5:31You want that from your team and if your world is feeling chaotic and you're
- 5:36feeling overwhelmed but you don't want to admit it, then you're going to try
- 5:39to get control wherever you can.
- 5:42And a lot of people do that in their business because it's theirs.
- 5:47And it feels like a place where they should have control.
- 5:51But control is not the aim.
- 5:55That's not what we're trying to do here. Life happens.
- 5:59We had a tree fall down in our yard. Did I talk about this last week?
- 6:03We were about to go out to dinner and a tree fell in our yard.
- 6:06You know, what are you going to do?
- 6:08You can't control it. I would have liked to control the wind and make it not
- 6:13break the tree because it was a freaking hassle.
- 6:18So many steps, and I didn't have time, of course.
- 6:22But there is no way I'll be able to control the weather and there is no way
- 6:27I'll be able to control other circumstances that are going to happen to me personally
- 6:32and to my business and also to my team, right?
- 6:35It may happen that something happens in someone's personal life and it's really
- 6:40inconvenient to the business.
- 6:42Well, you know what? We can't control that.
- 6:46We have to be ready for all those circumstances.
- 6:49Which means we have to have tools and resilience and ways of working through
- 6:55overwhelm that are not denial or control.
- 7:00So what are those ways? The first way is just admitting. It's like AA.
- 7:07Admitting that you're overwhelmed. It's okay. Give yourself permission to say,
- 7:12I'm feeling overwhelmed right now.
- 7:15I need to have a hard no on that ask.
- 7:19And I have a hard no sometimes with my husband. He actually encouraged me to
- 7:24have more hard no's because I was saying yes to things and then being resentful,
- 7:28which is like the number one thing I coach on.
- 7:31Don't say yes, unless it's a wholehearted yes, because it's really unfair to
- 7:36people when you say yes, and then you're half in it, and you're pissed or frustrated or resentful.
- 7:43So don't do that to people. It's just not fair. I was doing it all over the
- 7:47place in my personal life. I was like, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 7:50And then I was mad. And all the yeses were creating massive amounts of overwhelm.
- 7:56So the first thing you want to do is say, I am feeling overwhelmed.
- 8:00What are the things I can drop temporarily?
- 8:04It's not that you're going to drop it forever, but is there something that you
- 8:09can drop right now immediately, like really right now, that will release some
- 8:17of that feeling of overwhelm?
- 8:19And I love dropping things because what that means is you're giving yourself
- 8:23permission to say, I got to drop this thing.
- 8:27And so much of this overwhelm is really about the fact that we were not giving ourselves permission.
- 8:33We're telling ourselves we have to push, push, push, harder,
- 8:36harder, harder. I can't say no.
- 8:38I can't drop anything. But once we drop things, it sort of allows us to see what it means.
- 8:46And does the world shift?
- 8:49Does everything change when we say no to something? It does not.
- 8:53The real eye-opener is when you say no to a client, for instance,
- 8:58when you have a hard no with a client or a soft no, but you have a no and you're
- 9:03worried, oh no, they're going to fire me. They're going to go away.
- 9:08Even if you just push a timeline, people have all this fear.
- 9:12The truth is, if you're being honest with people and you're like,
- 9:16listen, I can't take that on right now. I want to do a good job for you.
- 9:20Therefore, I'm going to have to do it in a month because I just don't have the
- 9:23time to focus, I will tell you, 90% of clients will say, it's a bummer.
- 9:29We have, you know, some tight timelines, but you're the person we want to work with and we'll wait.
- 9:36That's when you know they're the client that you want to work with because they recognize your value.
- 9:41If they're like, well, too bad. We all we want is like a machine.
- 9:46Go tell them to like go call up chat GPT and chat GPT can do the work for them. It's fine. It's free.
- 9:52But if they really value you and the work that you do, whatever that might be, they're going to wait.
- 10:00And they do. and it's amazing. And what has happened with myself and with my
- 10:05clients is they really appreciate the honesty.
- 10:09They want the wholehearted yes. They want you to be all in. They want you to do good work for them.
- 10:16So if you're saying yes to everything for all the reasons we say yes,
- 10:20and then you're getting overwhelmed, remember, you're not going to do great
- 10:24work. and other things are going to start to falter in your life.
- 10:28So when overwhelm really hits and when it starts to bleed into burnout,
- 10:34and again, burnout does not mean you're burned to a crisp and can't get out of bed.
- 10:39A lot of times the first signals of burnout are just that feeling of like,
- 10:43I can't do anything right now.
- 10:46I just need to stare at a wall and my brain cannot process information.
- 10:51The idea of opening my email is exhausting interesting.
- 10:56Thinking about making dinner just gives me anxiety.
- 10:59I really don't feel like I can do anything. So what is happening in your body
- 11:04when that happens is you're having nervous system overwhelm.
- 11:09Okay, there's that word again. But basically, your nervous system has been taxed.
- 11:14Your cortisol levels have been flooding your system.
- 11:19Do I sound like a scientist? I am not a scientist.
- 11:23But we know this to be true. This is kind of like armchair knowledge.
- 11:28You flood your body with cortisol, you're going to fatigue your system.
- 11:33Same with dopamine, right? If you have too much dopamine flooding through your
- 11:37system, eventually that dopamine is going to run out, and you're going to feel
- 11:40tired, and you're going to feel like you can't do anything, and you might feel depressed.
- 11:46That is one of the symptoms as well. So we want to get ahead of this.
- 11:51A lot of times with a small business, those things are marketing related because
- 11:56marketing is just this rock that we got to push uphill constantly.
- 12:01Sometimes it like flattens us because it just rolls back down the hill and it's
- 12:06just really tiring and it requires a lot of pieces, moving pieces all the time,
- 12:12which is why I stepped out of marketing as my full-time job.
- 12:15So for me, when I was feeling overwhelmed, I stopped the podcast. I just took a break.
- 12:21Nothing changed. It's like we have these stories that, oh my God,
- 12:26if I drop this thing, everything will change. People will think I'm a loser.
- 12:30My business is going to go into the ground. I'm going to have to move under a bridge.
- 12:35That's always where we end up. When we take those stories all the way to the
- 12:39end, we like end up living under a bridge.
- 12:41Just allow yourself to believe that there could be other versions of the story
- 12:46that are better for you, that actually put you in a place that feels better,
- 12:54that feels calmer, that feels less overwhelming.
- 12:57So be okay to
- 12:59with admitting to yourself that you have overwhelm. Drop something today.
- 13:05Long-term, remember that you need rest. You need rest and recovery.
- 13:11You can't just grind, grind, grind all day long. It will catch up with you.
- 13:15And the thing I talk about all the time, there's an episode about routine and consistency.
- 13:23If you're not exercising, you're not going to have an outlet for your stress.
- 13:27So when you're grinding and saying yes to everything and then not taking time
- 13:32for yourself to exercise or just rest or stare at a wall, you're never going to,
- 13:40have that clarity that comes from someone having space.
- 13:45You're going to be driving forward, driving forward, driving forward,
- 13:48and eventually you're going to get to the detour.
- 13:52You're going to get to the dead end and you're going to look back and go, what did I do that for?
- 13:58Why did I allow myself to do that for so long?
- 14:02The body keeps the score. Your body is going to know that you've been pushing too hard.
- 14:09And until it gets to that point, it's time to regulate. It's time to slow down.
- 14:15It's time to reevaluate and look at your priorities.
- 14:19There is nothing wrong with slowing down and there is nothing wrong with rest.
- 14:26We have this really old story in our society. Well, we have two.
- 14:33One is if you're not productive, you're lazy and lazy people are bad.
- 14:39And the other one is you can't possibly run a successful business unless you're
- 14:44in your garage grinding for 90 hours a week. And that's the only way you're going to be successful.
- 14:51There are lots of other people who did not grind for 90 hours a week and they
- 14:56had a lot of success. But we're not hearing those stories because we have this
- 15:01mentality that you have to grind, grind, grind.
- 15:03You got to run the marathon until your feet are bloody.
- 15:06You can't give up. And we need to just recalibrate that.
- 15:11Can we just not run until our feet are bloody anymore? Can we just like take
- 15:16that out of our consciousness?
- 15:19That is not good. Running a marathon until your feet are bloody does not mean
- 15:25that you're like a better, stronger, more capable, resilient person.
- 15:29It means that you don't know when to stop.
- 15:32It means that you don't know how to take a break. It means that you don't know
- 15:36how to tell yourself and trust yourself that like you're all good without bloody feet.
- 15:43If you have to stop in the middle of the marathon, it doesn't make you a bad
- 15:46person. It means that you're confident
- 15:48and strong in your beliefs and your conviction about who you are.
- 15:53Somebody who runs with bloody feet is someone to me who's proving something.
- 15:57Who are they proving it to?
- 15:59Themselves? Great. Find another way to prove to yourself that you are a capable,
- 16:06amazing person without bloody feet.
- 16:10It makes it sound like I'm British, like feet are bad, those bloody feet.
- 16:14Do you know what I'm saying here? So pushing yourself to some limit that feels
- 16:21like you're proving something to yourself or others does not make you more capable or more resilient.
- 16:27It makes you more broken. so let's
- 16:31just shift that narrative to
- 16:34i am strong and capable and
- 16:37resilient and i can do that without pushing
- 16:40myself to my limits i can have firm no's i can have confident honest yeses i
- 16:48can have no resentment in a yes and i can say no really wholeheartedly without
- 16:55fear feeling good about who I am and what I'm able to do.
- 17:01Overwhelm comes from us not saying no enough.
- 17:05It comes from us trying to prove something and believing for some reason that
- 17:10we're not good enough without all of the pushing.
- 17:14This is what I tell my clients. You don't need to push yourself so hard.
- 17:19You're going to do better work.
- 17:21When you have time and space and creativity, and you never have time or space
- 17:27or creativity when you're pushing.
- 17:30And just be curious about why.
- 17:33Why are you pushing so hard? Why do you feel like you need to control things?
- 17:38Why are you afraid to admit that you're overwhelmed?
- 17:41Why are you saying yes to everything? Be honest with yourself when you ask the why.
- 17:48Write it down. If you like the reason, keep doing it.
- 17:53If you don't like the reason, if you don't really like the why, find a way to shift it.
- 18:00Find a way to make a change. It might be a big change. It might be a small change.
- 18:06All changes are acceptable in this situation.
- 18:09They can be micro changes.
- 18:11But if you know you want something different, you have to do something different.
- 18:16You can't just keep pushing, keep controlling, and thinking your circumstance is going to change.
- 18:23It's not. That overwhelm is not going to go away unless you really intentionally
- 18:29shift and change something.
- 18:32Overwhelm is the reason why we don't like to admit it is that we've done it to ourselves.
- 18:38I have been overwhelmed lately, and I 100% did it to myself.
- 18:42It was like self-sabotage.
- 18:45I just kept piling and piling and waiting for someone to see me break so that
- 18:50they would jump in and save the day.
- 18:52Nobody jumps in to save the day, especially when you're really good at hiding the overwhelm.
- 18:58No one's going to save you. You need to look at it.
- 19:02You need to admit you did it to yourself. You need to start making some changes
- 19:06and start dropping some things and saying no to some things. I promise you.
- 19:12The story that you have that somehow you're going to be a failure if you let
- 19:16go or you take a rest, it will not come to pass.
- 19:20I can tell you this after years and years and years of mentoring and guiding
- 19:25and helping people through overwhelm.
- 19:28That story is not true. You are not a failure.
- 19:32You may have actually a
- 19:36lot more success by maintaining a
- 19:40steady pace you'll have more longevity you'll feel better you'll be a better
- 19:47partner you'll be a better parent you'll be a better boss all the things that's
- 19:54my soapbox for the day overwhelm write it down get comfortable with the word.
- 20:00Know when you're in it. It's not a problem.
- 20:04I think you're doing great.
- 20:06Take a break. I'm here for you. And I'm going to leave it at that.
- 20:11And I will talk to you next week.
