Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Christine Rose: Maui and Hector's Dolphin Defenders spokesperson on the SailGP moving from Lyttleton Harbour
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Christ which loses sale GP it's gone, threats made good.
- 0:03Speaker 1: The league has withdrawn the hosting agreement. We hope it's
- 0:06Speaker 1: still in the country and the theory is it's probably
- 0:09Speaker 1: Auckland if they stay. But the Hector's Dolphin advocates they
- 0:11Speaker 1: celebrated yesterday. Of course, Christine rose from the Mali and
- 0:14Speaker 1: Hector's Dolphin defenders New Zealanders with us. Christine, good morning,
- 0:17Speaker 1: good morning. Do you see it as a win.
- 0:21Speaker 2: It is a win for the Dolphins because Littleton Harbor's
- 0:24Speaker 2: Hector's Dolphin habitat so no place for a high speed
- 0:26Speaker 2: boat race, and this decision rightly reflects.
- 0:29Speaker 1: That should it have ever got to the point of
- 0:31Speaker 1: staging something there, if what you say is correct, and
- 0:35Speaker 1: we should never have been there in the first place.
- 0:37Speaker 2: It should never have been there. You know, Russell Coots
- 0:41Speaker 2: signed up to the regulations that were designed to protect
- 0:45Speaker 2: hectors because that is their home, and then of course
- 0:49Speaker 2: had to stop the race because the Hectors were in
- 0:51Speaker 2: their home and then complained about it. So it would
- 0:54Speaker 2: have been fairer to ticket holders, to the other organizers
- 0:58Speaker 2: and supporters, and to the Dolphin and to the people
- 1:00Speaker 2: of New Zealand. To not have the race, not even
- 1:03Speaker 2: to plan to have the race there, And they should
- 1:05Speaker 2: really have put marine mammals Hector's dolphins at the center
- 1:08Speaker 2: of decision making to start with, and that would have
- 1:11Speaker 2: indicated that that was not the right place to have
- 1:13Speaker 2: the race.
- 1:14Speaker 1: So when you say the center, that's like, if there's
- 1:16Speaker 1: a Hector's dolphin in an area there is nothing doing
- 1:18Speaker 1: like that, you have no room for negotiation on that.
- 1:21Speaker 1: It just shouldn't be their full stop.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Well, there are rules that apply to you and I
- 1:26Speaker 2: using boats in Hector's dolphin habitat, and so those rules
- 1:31Speaker 2: have to apply to everybody else, especially where the scale
- 1:34Speaker 2: of impacts are greater, which they were with sale GP
- 1:38Speaker 2: And so yeah, you know, these dolphins are only found
- 1:41Speaker 2: in New Zealand, they're really rare, and they're already being
- 1:44Speaker 2: wiped out by the fishing industry, which has killed fifteen
- 1:47Speaker 2: Hector's dolphins since November. So add to that these high
- 1:51Speaker 2: impact boat races and it's just not appropriate. New Zealand's
- 1:55Speaker 2: got some really wonderful opportunities to host this race. It
- 1:58Speaker 2: would be really exciting somewhere else, but marine mammals aren't
- 2:02Speaker 2: where marine mammals aren't at risk and so let's all
- 2:06Speaker 2: get behind that. You know, I certainly would be good on.
- 2:08Speaker 1: You, Christine. Nice to talk to you, Christine Rose Moowey
- 2:10Speaker 1: and Hector's Dolphin Defenders New Zealand Mind.
