- 2:08listening to different tracks for this. This is a big deal. We weren't
- 2:12even in our studio yet. We were still in a basement and a co
- 2:15working space and we just kept listening to different tracks for Yo Gavel gavel to
- 2:19really because we want to get get it right. Uh. September of nineteen
- 2:23that's right. And we heard this and immediately we looked at each other and
- 2:27that was this. That was still that was it, just like that,
- 2:29it was it on right. And then we did a trial in October,
- 2:32did a little trial, and then it finally came uh and the world's ever
- 2:37been twenty twenty certain time, the world's ever been the same. No,
- 2:40it hasn't, Thank you ago. That's crazy. Yeah, wild from birth,
- 2:46from conception. It's not getting any better birth. Yeah, to uh,
- 2:54teenagers and then to a teenager, you lock away. That's what this
- 2:59show has become. Currently wearing the lock away. Lock away. But good
- 3:04for you guys. You have the keys. That's congratulations. No AD's not
- 3:07here, no no um. I have a people's court. You have a
- 3:13k Ross baby k raw Boss Ross. Who wants to go first? This
- 3:16is peak Ross. We are Peak Ross, Peak Ross. Um. So
- 3:22I mean, do you want to save Peak Ross for the bat clean up?
- 3:24You decide? Oh no, I'll go ahead, yea, I'll say,
- 3:30Dan goes. Okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, thanks,
- 3:32rag wash your nose out. It's goodding. I can see the hairs.
- 3:36My glass box has been moved a lot lower and it the hairs are
- 3:38coming straight through that can you really don't see any hairs. I just want
- 3:42to be clear. I don't know what weird thing what I've been talking about.
- 3:46We're televised here, rig you just what about you? Anyway? Uh?
- 3:53Let me introduce you to the case of five hundred and forty dollars worth
- 3:57of parking tickets that you will not see coming you. Five hundred and forty
- 4:00dollars worth of park Does it sound boring? AF? Yes it does.
- 4:05Uh. Will it continue to unravel until you will not see it coming?
- 4:10Yes? It will. Um. Will you be able to guess what the
- 4:13judge does? If you do, You're you're guess what Ross does and says
- 4:21and how he does it? Then I am gonna be My mind's gonna be
- 4:26blown. Okay, I'll buy you lunch sometime. Uh. Let me introduce
- 4:29you to Shawanda Arthur. Shawanda Showanda Arthur is suing her uncle, Jerome Arthur.
- 4:36OK for five hundred forty dollars in parking tickets. Here we go.
- 4:40Do we know if uncle on mother's side, father's dad's side, and it's
- 4:43that's important. Uh, Jerome's my uncle, He's my dad's brother. And
- 4:49he is the youngest of five siblings, and so he's only a little bit
- 4:53older than me, and he's been kind of like a big brother to me
- 4:55my whole life. And if you look, she looks like she's mid twenties,
- 4:59twenty five, he looks like he's thirty five six seven. And I
- 5:00have an uncle twelve years older than me, and we had that kind of
- 5:02relationship, So I get that it's been like a big brother, really close
- 5:05relationship growing up. Always been there for me, always had my back,
- 5:10and when he was younger, he got involved in the wrong crowd. Now,
- 5:13during this she says, you know the phrase you know no less than
- 5:16a dozen times. Ross stops her right there and goes, you're saying you
- 5:20know a lot. And I think it's because you're nervous. And you're nervous
- 5:24because one year in court and that's difficult, and two you're seeing what it's
- 5:28clearly a close family member. So take a deep breath. I'm gonna just
- 5:31go over to your uncle. She stops. So he goes over to Drum.
- 5:35Drum tell me about what's going on here. Drum says, Look,
- 5:38I've known I've been there for her since day one. I think my brother
- 5:42would be very disappointed in her for taking me to court. And it means
- 5:46he's dead. Ross says, where's your brother right now? He's passed away?
- 5:48Yeah, okay, Well, would he be disappointing to some of the
- 5:53life decisions that you've made, oh boy? And Drum says, well,
- 5:57since I got out of prison, I've been I've been on the straight narrow
- 6:00like he would be very happy. Well, what were you in prison for,
- 6:03your honor? That's not relevant to this case. And he says,
- 6:05it's entirely relevant to this case. Why were you in prison? And he
- 6:09said, your honor, I got in with the wrong crowd. And Raw
- 6:12says, you can't get turn in jail for that. You can't get thrown
- 6:15in jail for hanging out with the wrong crowd. What were you in jail
- 6:18for? And I know that I need to know you as you said it
- 6:20friend and uh And Jerome says, well, I got caught driving a stolen
- 6:27vehicle. Uh, And there was a weapon in the car and there were
- 6:30some drugs things like that, things like that, but it wasn't my car,
- 6:35wasn't my weapon, wasn't my drugs. Um, I accept full responsibility
- 6:40and I've changed. So he away, he stole a car that he no,
- 6:44no, he was because of a driver. Is the idea that we're
- 6:46getting to, like, we don't get a lot of info. This case
- 6:49happens in rapid fire. I can you imagine the poor luck you steal a
- 6:53car and a good can come on, get out, it's just keep on
- 7:01coming. And he says, there's a weapon in the cars, some drugs,
- 7:05things like that. What are things like that? What is worse than
- 7:10those two? What I mean? I don't want to know at that point,
- 7:13Uma, And he says, Okay, we gotta get down to responsibility.
- 7:15You say you accept responsibility. This case about parking tickets. Your your
- 7:19niece is bringing a court for parking tickets that you have received, even if
- 7:26they're in her car. You've received them, you admit you've received them,
- 7:29and you don't rescept Responi. You accept responsibility for driving a car with a
- 7:31weapon in it, but you don't accept responsibility for that. And he says,
- 7:35I accept some. I feel like she should take some responsibility. And
- 7:41he says, Ross goes, okay, I'm hearing you. You you're saying
- 7:46you bear some of the responsibility. How much responsibility do you think you bear
- 7:49for these parkings? Put a number on it, and he says, I
- 7:54would say half. Okay, I bear half the responsibility for these parking tickets.
- 7:59Gavel down, let's do this. Yeah, And so then he he
- 8:03goes, okay, uh, miss Arthur, I'm gonna go back to you,
- 8:05Hiwanda, to be clear. I just want to make sure you know
- 8:09I have you down for half right now, right now, and we'll get
- 8:11in half. We'll see, we'll see what happens from me here. Buckle
- 8:15up? Why was he driving your car to being in with well, your
- 8:18honor. After he got out of prison, it was difficult for him to
- 8:20get a job, and he couldn't register a car because he had outstanding tickets
- 8:24he could not pay, so he had a car. He couldn't register that
- 8:30car. I always wonder how people how people get so many parking tickets.
- 8:35That was until I feel like library fees, and so you did it,
- 8:39I said, that was that. I felt that way until I worked in
- 8:41a building where I was required to park in a parking garage like a mile
- 8:46away. It wasn't a mile, but it felt like a mile, and
- 8:48uh, I kept parking in front of the building, and I got lucky
- 8:52most days, but some days I did it. I did the old bit
- 8:54where I got one ticket and then I would put it was in an envelope
- 8:58and I would put it on the wind show every day. So they would
- 9:03at South Carolina where I went to school, on campus, police would write
- 9:05you a ticket and they put it in a manilla envelope right because the sun
- 9:09would dried out it was so hot. And I would just put that envelope
- 9:13on the on the windshields every day. Um. And then somebody finally got
- 9:18wise and caught on to me and started stuffing more tickets in there, but
- 9:22it were I see, so when you're leaving, he just put it back.
- 9:28Come at me, Kyle, that's right what you got? Uh?
- 9:31Okay anyway, Um, she says, okay. So he had a car.
- 9:33He couldn't register that car because of the parking ticket. They wouldn't let
- 9:37him register the car, so I register. He sold me the car for
- 9:43one dollar and then I had the title in my name and I registered that
- 9:48car so that he could then drive the car even though it was mine,
- 9:52but it was technically still his, if that makes sense. So she was
- 9:56just doing a masslid, doing a mas solid, which Ras says, it's
- 10:00out of solid. You're circumventing the law at that point, because he can't
- 10:03register a car for you to do that. You circumvented the law. And
- 10:07then he says, and then you would do it too. So then Ross
- 10:11says, why don't you wait a minute, why don't you have your own
- 10:15car, like you couldn't just let him borrow your own car. And she
- 10:18says, h, well, my car was taken from me and my license
- 10:22was suspended for a year. This is Chiwanda, the niece. He says,
- 10:26why I was expended suspended for a year? Well, I have uh,
- 10:30I have one reckless driving and then I have one DUI and I can't
- 10:33uh I can't. Um, I'm really sorry about the one dui. So
- 10:39Ross at this point goes so she despite the fact that her car was taken
- 10:43and she has no license, she was still able to register a car under
- 10:48her name. She doesn't have any outstanding tickets, she can register the car.
- 10:50She doesn't have a license to drive. He has a license to drive.
- 10:52It doesn't have the ability to register a car. Yeah, OK,
- 10:56yeah, it's a real rigmarole. What he was paying for insurance. I
- 11:00would assume she is, but I don't know. We don't get into that.
- 11:01Yeah, we don't get into that. So she says, I had
- 11:03one reckless driving ticket and then I have a DUI. I'm not proud of
- 11:07not proud of that. Uh, but Ross isn't having it. Ross sniffs
- 11:13it out. Rass says, so one DUI, one reckless driving Huh.
- 11:18She says, yes, yes, sir, just one one DUI. She
- 11:20said, yes. He says, uh, Deputy Thomas, oh no.
- 11:24He goes over to deput Deputy Thomas, um, what happens when you catch
- 11:31someone for DUI and suspect that it's DUI? But maybe you don't go through
- 11:37all the protocols. You've done this before and he says, yes, I
- 11:39have. So sometimes we suspect there's a DUI, but we don't go through
- 11:43the field, sobriety tests for a number of reasons that you don't, but
- 11:46you still take him in. And what happens is is the prosecution will say
- 11:50that since that the authorities didn't go through all this, we have to settle
- 11:54for a lesser charge than driving under the influence. And Rass says, what's
- 11:58that lesser charge, and Deputy Thomas says, reckless driving, and he said
- 12:07he looks at Chiwan. He goes, I want you to be honest with
- 12:09me, Miss Arthur, that reckless driving. Is that what happened? And
- 12:18she says, yes it is. And he says, you have an alcohol
- 12:22problem. Oh shook, And she smiles and smirks at him and says,
- 12:26no, I don't have an alcohol problem. And she says if. He
- 12:30says, if you have two DUIs, you have an alcohol problem. Denial
- 12:37is not just a river in Egypt. He says, do you have any
- 12:43children, and she said yes, I have a five year old daughter.
- 12:46He says, your daughter is seeing her mommy struggling with alcohol and then getting
- 12:50in a car and causing potential danger to herself and others. This case is
- 12:58about responsibility. You can't take responsibility that you have a problem and you,
- 13:03he points to Jerome, can't take responsibility that you just want to blame everyone
- 13:07else for something as dumb as a parking ticket. And Jerome's like, no,
- 13:09you're on it. That's not true. I accept some and he just
- 13:13stops and he's like, stop blaming other people, stop doing it. Take
- 13:18responsibility. For your actions. So then he says, okay, let's walk
- 13:24through some of these parking tickets. What was the what was the first parking
- 13:26ticket for? It was my uncle was picking me and my daughter up from
- 13:31my job because you don't have a car, because you have two d uys.
- 13:35Yeah, yes, sir, Um okay, what about the second one?
- 13:39He was also picking me up? Um, So how do you get
- 13:43a parking ticket if he was in the car picking you up? Jerome goes,
- 13:46well, I got there at the time. She told me too.
- 13:50She was running late. I fell asleep. Ticket on the car. Who
- 13:54when I woke up, happened twice? Man, this guy's fall asleep.
- 13:58Yes, all the ticket up his niece? Can I so this? You
- 14:01know? This is what I'm picking up here, though she agreed to do
- 14:07this in exchange for essentially for Uber. Yeah. And so he said,
- 14:13so you're late for your uncle picking you up. And then he asked,
- 14:18so you're just running late and you don't have and she said no. I
- 14:22told him that I was running late. I was gonna be fifteen minutes.
- 14:24You need to find another spot. We don't get into if that's proven or
- 14:26not. At this point, he's already, he's already snoozed, snoozing,
- 14:31He's snoozing. So it's five hundred forty dollars of tickets. Yeah, Ross
- 14:35is ready to rule. Who whoa just with those two? Yep? Man,
- 14:41do we know how many tickets there are? We don't. Oh man,
- 14:46Oh boy, this is tough. You know, I just hearing,
- 14:50hearing that, hearing that it was he was picking her up. It does
- 14:56sound like, you know, she made multiple mistakes driving under the influence.
- 15:03She can't get a license right now, and this seemed like a work around
- 15:09for transportation, and she was running late. She was taking him for granted.
- 15:18I'm gonna give her no money. You're gonna give her no, I'm
- 15:20gonna give her no money because she was taking him for granted. And this
- 15:26is ultimately it all comes down to her inability because at least these two he
- 15:33only got to take us because he was waiting on her. Ultimately, it
- 15:35comes down to her inability to get a license. So I'm gonna give her
- 15:39no money. Are you ready for this? Ross says the galve's gonna come
- 15:45down in favor of the plaintiff for two hundred and seventy dollars, which is
- 15:48half okay, And he says, because your your uncle's hetty bears half of
- 15:56the responsibility. But the reality is is you really shouldn't get anything because your
- 16:00lack of responsibility and treatment of what you think the law is. And he
- 16:03stops and he goes, you know, the more I think about it,
- 16:08your claim is dismissed. And he walks out. So he literally says,
- 16:12the gal's gonna come down and favor the plaintiff for two hundred seventy dollars,
- 16:17and then in the middle of explaining his ruling, he says, no,
- 16:19the more I think about it, you're not getting anything. Your case is
- 16:22dismissed. Anyone just saying you're not treating the law with any respects. The
- 16:26law's not going to treat you with any respect. I'm out of here.
- 16:29Hey, So I was right, Well, the goal was how you got
- 16:32there, That was what I was saying, Like if you got like hit.
- 16:33His whole process of he said, the judge ruled, he said,
- 16:38the gavel's gonna come down and favor the plaintiff four two hundred and seventy dollars,
- 16:42and then he changed his mind. He ungabbled a gavel, Yeah,
- 16:47you don't ungabble again, but he does. Man, it was unreal.
- 16:49What do you think about that? I did? I was bewildered. Both
- 16:53of these people needed serious help, and I just wanted them to get the
- 16:56help that they needed. And neither one of them deserved a dime. They
- 17:00both should have had to pay the full amount. I don't know how that's
- 17:02possible. They both should have had to pay the full amount. That's where
- 17:03I was with it. Yeah, that's fair. Yeah, that's fair man,
- 17:07Judge Ross, you said, will I will um. It's time for
- 17:11people's court yet it is. I want to introduce to Rakia Malone, Rakia
- 17:18Um. She is suing um Uh. Eliah is her name. It's not
- 17:23Aliyah, it's Eliah. And I wrote it out phonetically. Aliah. Yeah,
- 17:27Elijah Jade is her name, and she ja he has suing Aliah for
- 17:33two hundred and fifty dollars for money two hundred fifty look out, um.
- 17:40So Rakia had a washer and dryer that we're sitting down in her mother's basements.
- 17:45That always starts. Yeah, her mother was moving and so they needed
- 17:49to get rid of this washer and dryer. So she was talking to a
- 17:55co worker of hers, and somehow the washer and dryer came up and and
- 18:00our coworker was like, Hey, my sister Elijah needs a washer and dryer.
- 18:04I'll ask her if she'd like to buy this washer and dryer from you.
- 18:08So they end up communicating talking via text, and they agree upon a
- 18:15price of two hundred and fifty dollars for the pair of the washer and the
- 18:19both of them, for both of them two fifty total. Um. She
- 18:25is upfront and she says I don't have the money right now, and Rikia
- 18:29says, okay, Um, I can give him to you now and then
- 18:33when the ones tax return season comes, class, you give me the two
- 18:37hundred fifty dollars, all square, all done, any right up here.
- 18:40This is all on text, mess text mess okay, got it, um.
- 18:42So they strike a deal. They agree, and she comes and she
- 18:47takes the washer and dryer in um mid January, I believe it will mid
- 18:52to late. It was at January twenty first is when she came and got
- 18:56the the washer dryer. So tax season comes and goes and it is March,
- 19:03and um Rakia text and asks about the money, and um Rikia,
- 19:14but judge asked Rikia were you, by any chance? Were you and Eliah's
- 19:18sister still friends at this point? And she says no, And Judge says,
- 19:26what what happened? And Rikia is like, we you know, we
- 19:30had a falling out, and she keeps pushing and prodding and she's just she's
- 19:33not giving her much. She's just like, we had a falling out.
- 19:36And Aliah says, oh, I'll tell you what happened. I'll give you
- 19:40all the information she's got it. Yeah, so Aliah, Eliah sorry,
- 19:45Eliah says, my sister Um walks into her house and Rikia is sleeping with
- 19:55a dude on her couch. Oh my gosh. We don't know who this
- 19:59dude is in relation to Um Eliah's sister Um, but for some reason this
- 20:06really upset her. And we also don't know why Rakia was doing this on
- 20:08her couch with none of that has explained. But she walks into her house.
- 20:12She sees Rakia on the couch with a guy, um having fun times
- 20:18yes okay, and they she confronts Rakia and Rakia strikes her okay, physically
- 20:26strikes her sisters. Yes, Elia's sister is not in court to bear witness
- 20:32to this and Rikia says, no, none of this happened. Okay,
- 20:36here say, here's say but something clearly happened that caused their friendship to to
- 20:42fizzle out. If you will, Whether or not it was panky on the
- 20:45couch, we don't know. Um So um Eliah says, so you know,
- 20:55I called her up to get the tea and uh, Rickie is like,
- 21:00I'll call you back. This is like in February and a month later,
- 21:04um she she texts and threatens her that if she doesn't pay the money,
- 21:11she's gonna take her to small claims court and Judge Million says, that's
- 21:15not a threat. That's an American's rights when they aren't given something that they
- 21:19are owed that it is not a threat. It is not like, hey,
- 21:25if you don't pay me, I'm gonna come and shoot. Shoot.
- 21:26That's a threat saying you're gonna take someone to court. A few speed.
- 21:30I'm all right you would take a shot. That's just the way things go.
- 21:34And she and Eliah's like, well, we can agree to disagree on
- 21:37what a threat is. No, we cannot. Um So uh Eliah basically
- 21:45says, you know there was this threat and blah blah, blah. So
- 21:48Judge Million asked if the incident with her sister had anything to do with her
- 21:52not paying the money, like, were you like looking out for your sister?
- 21:56Like you wrong with my sister? So I'm not gonna give you a
- 21:59two hundred, and she says no, it all comes down to the fact
- 22:03that the washer and dryer did not work. I brought a video. Play
- 22:08the video, and the Judge's like, okay, I will, and Only
- 22:11is like, okay, then play it. And Judge is like, I'm
- 22:14getting ready to play it, and Only is like, okay, play it,
- 22:15now, play it. Then play it, And Judge Million's like,
- 22:18I'm trying to play it, but I'm too busy talking to you about you
- 22:22telling me to play it, so I can't have the time to play it.
- 22:26It's the whole rigular role you can imagine. So she finally plays the
- 22:33video. It is unreally it's unclear when the video is taken and exactly what's
- 22:38happening. But as Eliah explains, when the washer would get to the rent
- 22:45cycle, it would shut off and give so you kind of hear it in
- 22:52the video, but it's just not very clear on what's happened. Consequential,
- 22:56right, because the text message doesn't say if it's broken, you don't have
- 23:00to pay me. It doesn't say that. And also Judge Million says,
- 23:06did you talk to her after receiving the washer and dryer and say it doesn't
- 23:11work? And she says, I called her up. We had this conversation,
- 23:15and Judge Million says, well, I see this texting back and forth.
- 23:19You pick it up in January and you're texting back and forth for the
- 23:23next couple weeks and it's pleasant. And then in March she texts you and
- 23:27asked for the money, and you say, and this is in the text
- 23:32message. Eliah says, in the text I'm still working on getting the money.
- 23:37Why did you not? Judge Million asked, why did you not in
- 23:40that moment bring back up the fact that it did not work? And Elia's
- 23:45like, I've brought it up many a times. She's not having it.
- 23:48I'm just trying to, you know, appease her at this point. And
- 23:53Judge Million's like, it seems like to me that if you were willing to
- 24:00pay, it leaves me to believe that it did work. Why would you
- 24:04have not said that? And Eliah says, who cares what you think.
- 24:11Judge Million kicks her out and she's ready to rule. I wonder how this
- 24:15is gonna man alive has been a lion. Alia is a liar, you
- 24:22Elia jade uh and she's like getting the dime Rukia Uh. It gets the
- 24:26money period into the story. She is going to rule in favor of Rakia
- 24:33for just basic normalcy two hundred and fifty dollars plus. Oh, here we
- 24:38go, let's go. Whatever it costs to file this in small claims court,
- 24:44which is about one hundred and fifty dollars plus interest from the day that
- 24:48she picked up the washer and dry or we don't know what that amount is.
- 24:52So it's two hundred and fifty dollars plus all of that in favor interests
- 24:56of Raki. Let's go. And it goes to show, Oh yeah,
- 25:00everybody out there, if one day you find yourself in small claims court or
- 25:06any court or the people's court, don't be mean. Don't judge back to
- 25:11the judge, because here's what could happen. They can they don't have to
- 25:15just do the minimum of what they're asking for. They can tack on whatever
- 25:19they want to rispect. That's what the judges want you to see. That
- 25:29was the People's Court, that was Judge Ross. We did and this was
