- 0:07The first Super Bowl was played on Sunday, January 15, 1967, when the Kansas City Chiefs met the Green Bay Packers at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
- 0:17In 1966, the NFL and AFL were separate leagues, with independent schedules.
- 0:22Due to the success of the AFL through the 1960s, the two leagues decided to schedule a championship game after the end of each of their seasons.
- 0:30The leagues originally chose the name the AFL-NFL Championship Game, but before the season began, Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt began referring to it as the Super Bowl, and the name stuck.
- 0:41The Chiefs dominated the American Football League with an 11-2-1 regular season record, and destroyed Buffalo in the AFL Championship Game.
- 0:49The Packers were coached by Vince Lombardi, and they represented the National Football League after finishing with a 12-2 record and beating Dallas in the NFL Championship.
- 0:58The game was called on both CBS and NBC radio networks. This audio is from the NBC Network broadcast, featuring announcers Jim Simpson and George Raderman.
- 1:28At this moment, bands are masked down to our left. The Coliseum floor is green. To our right, the yellow ends on with Chiefs, spelled out in red letters, and the American Football League emblem.
- 1:42To our left, in green letters, spelled out Packers with the NFL-familiar shield. And in a few moments, I'm sure that we will have our national anthem.
- 1:51And George Raderman, there's been a lot of talk, there's been a lot written about this AFL and NFL Championship, but if I ask you what thoughts are fleeting through your mind at this moment as a former great quarterback yourself, what would you say?
- 2:04Well, I'm sort of sympathizing, I think, at this time with those 80 fellows who are down there in their locker rooms who have not come out on the field yet.
- 2:13It's indescribable the feeling that not just a professional football player, but any athlete has before a great contest such as this.
- 2:21They know that millions of people will be watching them, they'll be listening to the radio account of this game, thousands of people here in the stands.
- 2:27And it's just indescribable that nervous tension that builds up. The game means so much to both of these teams.
- 2:34And frankly, it's not the money. Now, there's a difference of $7,500 between the winning and losing shares today. The winning team will receive $15,000, each player on the losing team will receive $7,500.
- 2:46And many people think, well, this is sufficient to make the difference right there. Certainly this does mean something to these people, but actually it's much more than that.
- 2:54There's tremendous pride, as we mentioned before, it's not just two football teams.
- 2:58This is the entire National Football League against the entire American Football League today, a game that people have been looking forward to for seven years.
- 3:06And don't think that those baby fellows, 40 on each team, don't feel this right now in their locker rooms. They're all alone there and the tension is just tremendous.
- 3:15While they're all alone there, out on the field now, the combined college bands of the University of Arizona and Grand Lake College.
- 3:22And they are complimented by the Anaheim High School Communist Grill Team and what is called the Super Bowl of course, which right now is marching across the track from our right to center field.
- 3:33And in the moment, of course, we will have the opening ceremonies.
- 3:36As everything else concerning this Super Bowl, this NFL Championship is, there are many people here and we are concerning ourselves now with today's officials.
- 3:47There are six officials from each league. There are six who are designated as today's officials, six more who are the honors.
- 3:54And before we get caught up in all of the Super Bowl pregame activity, let us tell you today's officials.
- 4:00The referee, number 10 Norman Schachter of the National Football League.
- 4:05The umpire is George Young of the American Football League.
- 4:09The linesman is Bernie Odom of the National Football League.
- 4:12The back judge is Jack Reeder of the American Football League.
- 4:16The bill judge is Mike Wasetsky of the National Football League.
- 4:20The line judge is Al Sabato of the American Football League.
- 4:23And repeat, there are six more waiting in the wings should one of those not be able to perform his duties today.
- 4:35American audience played by the bands and in a few moments we will have the introductions to both Green Bay, what is the National Football League title.
- 4:43And the choices today by most people around this country to win the first Super Bowl as well as the Kansas City Chiefs who many say have the psychological edge to come out and win for the American Football League.
- 4:54And now on the field, the emblem of an American Eagle is born.
- 4:59I have the combined bands of Arizona Grand League and the Anaheim High School.
- 5:03And now let us listen to the Super Bowl chorus.
- 5:13America the Beautiful.
- 5:43America the Beautiful.
- 6:08America the Beautiful.
- 6:37The applause not only for the Super Bowl chorus.
- 6:41At America the 4,000 pigeons have been released here in the Los Angeles Coliseum.
- 6:47Some of the game conditions for today's ball game between Green Bay and Kansas City after a touchdown the teams will kick, run or pass for one extra point.
- 6:55The AFL 2-4 option is not an event.
- 6:58Now remember the National Football League ball will be used when the National Football League team is on offense.
- 7:04The American Football League when the AFL team is on offense.
- 7:08And George Rodman we want to talk about that in a moment ourselves.
- 7:11And now there is a shield, number one, of the United States of America.
- 7:18With the red and the white and the blue.
- 7:21I'm pulling the loss on the Coliseum floor here in Los Angeles.
- 7:24And what it does, we have a woman, George, what is the real difference between the AFL and the NFL ball?
- 7:31Well it is claimed that the National Football League ball is slightly fatter.
- 7:36And the American League ball constantly a bit harder to throw.
- 7:41I doubt this very much really.
- 7:43I think the quarterbacks may have a psychological handicap here.
- 7:48They may feel throwing a strange ball would be a little different.
- 7:51The ball would be a little narrower, a little fatter.
- 7:53So they have compromised by using the American League ball when the American League is on offense.
- 7:58And the Kansas City Elks on offense using the National League ball when Green Bay is on offense.
- 8:03Now ladies and gentlemen before the Super Bowl, our national anthem.
- 8:07The National Anthem.
- 8:36The National Anthem.
- 9:05The National Anthem.
- 9:27We'll be set for the kickoff in just a minute.
- 9:29And as we await the opening kickoff of the World Championship of Professional Football, let me ask you.
- 9:35Last September did you pick the Packers and Chiefs to finish first?
- 9:40Sports Illustrated picked them.
- 9:42In their home football preview they said the Packers are those against whom all others imagine.
- 9:47They'll win it with style and power.
- 9:49About Kansas City's chances, Sports Illustrated said if the Super Bowl ever does come off,
- 9:55the first team to represent the AFL will very well be the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 10:00Guesses?
- 10:01Probably sure.
- 10:02But based on a thorough analysis of the men who play and coach football professionally,
- 10:07Sports Illustrated staffs and professionals bring you clinic writing and provocative sports coverage every week.
- 10:13The NFL and AFL championships, the Super Bowl preview.
- 10:17And coming up, a report on the action about to unfold right here.
- 10:21Pictures in fast post color.
- 10:23The important details of all sports and leisure time activities.
- 10:27Their excitement and color in professional hands every week in Sports Illustrated.
- 10:32The bands have now made their way up the field and down to our left.
- 10:42They are lining up for the head connections of the players and here they come.
- 10:48Kansas City will be introduced first at center number 66, Wayne Fraser of Auburn.
- 10:58At right guard, number 64 from Iowa, Kirk Merz.
- 11:04At left guard, Ed Bunney, number 71 of Michigan State.
- 11:08And remember, the offensive line outplays down at Green Bay.
- 11:12Right tackle, number 73, DeMarvin Dave Hill.
- 11:15At left tackle, the big boys, 66, 292, Jim Tyrell, number 77 from Ohio State.
- 11:23At the school end, Chris Burkett of Stanford, number 88.
- 11:30The All-American from Stanford.
- 11:32And the tight end, for all of us, Michigan State will start number 84.
- 11:37Some of the slight shoulder separation of the championship game at this time.
- 11:45Number 89, a big man is from Mike Garth, the running back.
- 11:48He was nice and close in the round of arctic at USC and played his games here.
- 11:51Garth is from Clinton, number 32 is the fullback, the All-American from Kansas.
- 11:56And the quarterback is Len Dawson of Purdue, since he told 190 pounds on his arm and thinking
- 12:02and ability by the hopes of the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 12:06And now the rest of the Chiefs team.
- 12:12The Chiefs will repeat our question, white with red nubles.
- 12:15And someone passed along a note to us that the Chiefs this year, of course, they were lost twice.
- 12:21But never lost while wearing these uniforms.
- 12:24The team that is heavily favored to win, the Green Bay Packers, have yet to be introduced.
- 12:29They will today be wearing their green jerseys, gold pants with the white nubles.
- 12:34And the first day, as they say, has been to the well before.
- 12:37They will have played in either the National Footballing Championship game or Playoff Bowl
- 12:42in each of the last six years, and they have won four World Championships in that time.
- 12:47Vincent and Bonnie, since taking over the Packers in 1959, has done a tremendous job.
- 12:54The opposite way, the Green Bay Packers, center field glory of Georgia Tech, number 50.
- 13:01And right gone, and of course, Green Bay has got some great ones.
- 13:04Jerry Cramer, number 64 from Idaho in his ninth year.
- 13:08And that's got Craig Fuzzy Thurston from Dollar Tree, his home, number 63 in his ninth year.
- 13:15Right tackle from SMU, the veteran 10-year Forest Gray, 6'4", 250.
- 13:21And left tackle, Bob Skoronsky of Indiana, number 76.
- 13:25The split end, number 84, Carol Dale, the DPI. And the tight end, Utah's Mara Fleming,
- 13:32number 81.
- 13:36The backer back from Colorado, number 86, Boyd Donald, about 49 passes this year.
- 13:43Left running back, Elijah Pitts of Philander Smith, number 22.
- 13:46Many people feel that.
- 13:48Paul Hornig, mostly active today.
- 13:50The fullback, Jim Ting, NSU, number 31.
- 13:53And the close at quarterback, the most viable player in the National Football League this year
- 13:57from the University of Alabama, number 15, Bart Stark.
- 14:00The rest of the Packers come out on the field, and George Ralleman,
- 14:04the Super Bowl about which we've been talking, is just now moments away.
- 14:09Just moments away. It's interesting to note the great weather we have here in Los Angeles.
- 14:14The temperature in the 70s, a nice day for a football game.
- 14:18We have a report on the weather in both Green Bay and Kansas City.
- 14:21It's clear in both cities, but it's 6 degrees in Green Bay and 26 degrees in Kansas City.
- 14:27And I'm certain there's not a player down there on that field who isn't happy to be here
- 14:31on a good dry field in Los Angeles with the temperatures in the 70s today,
- 14:36rather than playing on the frozen turf someplace back east or in the northern part of the country.
- 14:41This is really going to be a fine test.
- 14:43They will have no excuses because of the weather.
- 14:45Either team loses today.
- 14:49Well, John Gillum and Jerry Mays, the co-captains of Kansas City, are on the field,
- 14:53along with Willie Davis and the other offensive captain, Bob Skowalski,
- 15:03a tackle from Indiana.
- 15:05Green Bay has won the 12th and will receive the football of its first AFL-NFL championship.
- 15:11And so the Packers, the methodical team, the team that dwells on fundamentals,
- 15:15the team that everybody says, with the exception of those who support American football
- 15:19leaders, of course, should win this championship, will receive the ball first
- 15:24and get the first crack to test the defense of Kansas City.
- 15:29The Packers breaking out to our right.
- 15:31To repeat for you, the policy of the Los Angeles Sunnyskies, temperature in the 70s and one a day.
- 15:37Donnie Anderson, number 44, and Herb Adderley, number 26, go back.
- 15:42Anderson, the bonus boy, who came from Texas Tech, the rookie, and Herb Adderley,
- 15:47the six-year veteran from Michigan State.
- 15:50And Fletcher Smith, number 17, will kick off for Kansas City, the Chiefs moving from left to right,
- 15:57the Packers from right to left.
- 15:59And Anderson and Adderley are stepping up to about the four or five,
- 16:04anticipating a shorter kick from Fletcher Smith of Kansas City.
- 16:08The Super Bowl is underway, and it is a short kick from Smith.
- 16:13Adderley at the six, across the ten, running to his right, across the 15,
- 16:18cuts back up to the center of the field and gets to the 25-yard line,
- 16:21where he is going up there in the first and 10 to Green Bay.
- 16:24E.J. Holley, the right-side linebacker, number 55, made the stop,
- 16:28and on to number 44, Gerald Wilson, and number 78, the left-side linebacker, Bobby Bell.
- 16:34We'll set the offensive lineup for you on Green Bay as they come out of the hole.
- 16:42It is Boyd Deller who comes as a flanker to the left.
- 16:44Carol Dale is split to the right.
- 16:46Mara Fleming, the tight end, is on the right side.
- 16:48Elijah Pitts, Jim Taylor, the setbacks.
- 16:50Hot Star calling signals on the first play of the game.
- 16:53Jim Taylor picks up two or three yards,
- 16:55made it over to his own right side before E.J. Holley came across from his right-side linebacker spot
- 17:02and knocked it down at the 20-mile to gain a four in the second round and six.
- 17:10Jerry May, 75, Andy Rice, 58, Buck Buchanan, 86,
- 17:14Jekyllston, 85, and on the forward wall for Kansas City.
- 17:18Bobby Bell, Cheryl Hendrick, and E.J. Holley, the linebackers,
- 17:20will pick up the deep men in the moment.
- 17:22Dollars flank left.
- 17:24And off to Elijah Pitts.
- 17:26He's back to the line of scrimmage, running off his own left side
- 17:29and up near the 35-yard line, just shy at the first down.
- 17:32Johnny Robinson came up from the defensive secondary,
- 17:35and making the stop is Freddie Williams and Bobby Hunt,
- 17:38Johnny Robinson and Marty Mitchell, who are the deep men for Kansas City.
- 17:43Third down and one.
- 17:45The Packers have picked up nine on two running plays,
- 17:47testing first the left side of Kansas City and then the right side.
- 17:51Carol Dale goes wide to the right.
- 17:53Down low, the flanker to the left.
- 17:55And on the far left, the tight end is split about three yards to the right.
- 18:00It's wrong side to the left.
- 18:02Star on third down one.
- 18:04Dollars signals.
- 18:05Hands off to his fullback, Taylor.
- 18:06Taylor's got the first down before his back down by William Mitchell.
- 18:09Number 22, the right counterback as he hits to the 37.
- 18:12First down to the Packers.
- 18:14And it's interesting to note that the Green Bay Packers
- 18:16have started off the ballgame as we thought they would
- 18:19with their rather conservative running offense.
- 18:21Nothing fast to the end all, just straight power plays.
- 18:24Off tackle to the right, then a sweep to the left,
- 18:26then Taylor going off tackle again to the left.
- 18:28The straight power, the traditional conservative offense of the Green Bay Packers.
- 18:33Dollar has come out and Max McGee has gone in.
- 18:36Carol Dale to the right and Boxer is going to try his first pass.
- 18:39In the pocket, looking for his bandit is under throw and intended for Max McGee at the 47 yard line.
- 18:44Johnny Robinson is back there to the fair and had more to ball than under throw, George Redmond.
- 18:49Robinson and Miller had an interception.
- 18:51He had ten on the year, second and ten.
- 18:53Of course a good passer will do that.
- 18:55He will always throw the ball first of all where it cannot be intercepted,
- 18:58even if he can't complete it.
- 18:59He'll make certain to keep it away from that defensive man.
- 19:02And there you saw one of the reasons that Bart Starr only had three interceptions
- 19:06during the entire National Football League season.
- 19:09He will definitely not throw that ball any place where a defensive man has a chance at it.
- 19:13Ball but a happenance to go, first goal to those score, Green Bay,
- 19:16received the kickoff, now has the ball on the 37.
- 19:19On second and ten, Starr got straight back.
- 19:22That is one down, that's going to finish it down right by Buckley down on the right side tackle.
- 19:27A long loss from the 37 back to the 26, 11 yards.
- 19:32And on the first flip, drop back down the star,
- 19:35Big Tellen, a four year veteran from Bradley Fellows,
- 19:38got through to make the tackle.
- 19:41Third down, that long yard.
- 19:43And we note now that the Kansas City Chiefs have put in an extra linebacker.
- 19:47They've taken out Andy Rice and put in a linebacker so they will have three,
- 19:52a three man rush this time on Starr and four linebackers.
- 19:55They invariably do this on an obvious passing situation.
- 19:59McGee to the left, Harald Hale to the right,
- 20:01Marver Fleming split as Elijah Pitts goes into the slot to the left.
- 20:05Third down and 21 yards, Starr went back,
- 20:08going to be hit in the spot as he hits to the 21 yard line and that is all.
- 20:13Kansas City was in on it, Bobby Bell glitzing from the left side.
- 20:18And Green Bay will be forced to kick the ball away.
- 20:21Picked up one first down, a little reform from the long 37 back to the 22.
- 20:28On Chandler coming in to do the punting,
- 20:30and Mike Garrett and Emmett Thomas go deep for Kansas City.
- 20:34Chandler will step back inside his own 10 yard line.
- 20:39Little or no wind here today,
- 20:41so the wind is down a factor on the Chandler punt.
- 20:46Chandler just does get the kick away, but it is a boomer.
- 20:49That is Mike Garrett at the 28 yard line, jocking.
- 20:52Gets past one man, cuts to the right side across the 30s,
- 20:54still on his feet and right down the bounds as he hits to the 37 yard line.
- 20:59And Mike Garrett brings the ball back to the 37,
- 21:02will stay in the game at Kansas City for the first time today, goes on offense.
- 21:05And Dawson will be quarterback, Mike Garrett your running back,
- 21:08Curtis McQuindle the fullback,
- 21:10and the kill your tackle, foot hard on us as the tight end,
- 21:12this foot with this good end.
- 21:14Tire and heel your tackles, body and nerves your guards and crazier at center.
- 21:22No score, in this the first putter with about 10 minutes left.
- 21:32Kansas City sends Garrett in motion.
- 21:35Dawson rolls out to the left, looks for one man on the far side,
- 21:38and now he has got a lot of ball arms.
- 21:40Chris Burkett, fucked up a lot of ball arms.
- 21:43Burkett was split, Otis Taylor was in tight, Garrett went in motion.
- 21:48And so the Kansas City Chiefs field dropout, who have the reputation for gambling early,
- 21:54went to the pass on first down, a spawn fast green bay,
- 21:57which ran first to the right and then to the left.
- 21:59And we have an example of Kansas City's moving pocket,
- 22:02as Lenny Dawson did not drop straight back, but faded back to his left,
- 22:05and then set up, as we pointed out before, he will not throw on the run,
- 22:08but he will set up with this moving pocket, either to the right or to the left.
- 22:12That time he went to the left.
- 22:14Again, they flanked back, well now he's splitting out to the right,
- 22:17Otis Taylor, Burkett is flanked to the left, McClinton and Garrett at the setbacks.
- 22:21Dawson, the long count.
- 22:23Hands of all to Garrett, Garrett at the line of scrimmage,
- 22:25and May has picked up the yard or two, and is still on his feet and gets across the footer.
- 22:29A great individual effort, and that's Mike Garrett,
- 22:32four yards from the 37 of the 41.
- 22:35Ron Kostelnik made the tackle.
- 22:37Looked as though Garrett had had it, but squeezed out.
- 22:40Turned the corner and picked up four yards.
- 22:42Willie Davis, Ron Kostelnik, Henry Jordan, and Lionel Aldridge,
- 22:46along the four-mall for green bay.
- 22:48Dave Robinson, Braden Itschke, and Leroy Cathy, your linebackers.
- 22:51Her battery, Willie Wood, Tom Brown, and Bob Jeter, the deep nut.
- 22:55Third down and six, as Burford again goes wide to the left.
- 23:05He has been set left as a flanker each time.
- 23:08High formation, but now Garrett steps over to the right, and Taylor is flanked to the right.
- 23:13Third and six, looking for Burford as Dawson has him first down across the 15 green bay territory.
- 23:18With a four to seven yard line, the Chiefs have a first down in green bay territory.
- 23:25Bob Jeter, a viral four-year veteran, Dick Burford, he was the only man on that side,
- 23:29and it was double T that Dawson got the ball to it.
- 23:32And that could be an extremely important first down for Kansas City,
- 23:35because of course they've been hearing that green bay has a tremendous defensive squad,
- 23:39that they perhaps couldn't move the ball against them.
- 23:41The very first time they get the ball down, they do make a first down.
- 23:44This could build up their confidence tremendously in this ball game.
- 23:48High formation, ball is handed to Garrett, and Garrett's going nowhere.
- 23:53The green bay Packers defensive line rolls up and knocked him down.
- 23:57It'll be second down and ten.
- 23:59Henry Jordan of the University of Virginia, a ten-year veteran.
- 24:02That time, oldest Taylor was flanked to the right, and Burford was setting the slot to the right.
- 24:07In the second and ten, the ball on the 47 yard line of green bay,
- 24:10and he's got ten and a half minutes to go, no score here in the first quarter of the Coliseum of Los Angeles.
- 24:15The first AFL-NFL Championship under clear skies.
- 24:22And we note that the two passes Lenny Dawson has thrown at both ends of the left,
- 24:26he seems to be avoiding so far cornerback for Adderley,
- 24:29who plays left cornerback for green bay and one of the best in the business.
- 24:34Too much time, I believe, will be the charge against Lenny Dawson,
- 24:38and will cost him five yards, and will make it second down and fifteen.
- 24:43And that takes the ball back into Kansas City territory at their own 48 yard line.
- 24:49Green bay took the kickoff, picked up one first down to the 37 yard line,
- 24:53and then were thrown back to their own 21.
- 24:55Chandler, in front of the way, to the 37 of Kansas City.
- 24:58Kansas City moving to the 47 of green bay, where this five yard penalty is set to back.
- 25:03Otis Taylor comes on wide right, Murford is setting the slot.
- 25:08Dawson calling the signals.
- 25:11Dawson rolling to the right.
- 25:14Dawson throwing has a man in the court, it's more than a great catch,
- 25:18but they say he's out of bounds.
- 25:19Chris Murford, for the second time, made a catch, but could not keep both feet in bounds.
- 25:26Dowler, we understand, Boyd Dowler, who started this game, is out with an injured shoulder.
- 25:31Max McGee, you'll recall, replaced him very early.
- 25:35Now, it is stored down and 15 for the Kansas City Cheeks.
- 25:38Murford has shown an ability to get loose, but each time,
- 25:41Dawson hugging those sidelines has forced him out of bounds with attempts.
- 25:45And another thing of interest to note, all three of Lenny Dawson's passes so far have been to Chris Murford.
- 25:51One complaint, the other to him complaint because he was right on the sideline.
- 25:55Murford, of course, is a seven year veteran, and in a game like this,
- 25:57there's a tendency to go with your experienced people early.
- 26:01On third down and 15, Taylor wide to the right.
- 26:05No score, and this is the first quarter, Dawson back to throw, looking for Taylor,
- 26:09and he overthrows Taylor as well as Herb Annelly at the 25-yard line.
- 26:13And it'll be a fork down, and now Kansas City will send in Joe Wilson,
- 26:17who has a 44.5 putting average, to do the kicking.
- 26:21Right back is Willie Wold and Donnie Anderson.
- 26:26No score, nine minutes to go, the Green Bay Packers in green with gold trousers,
- 26:31the Kansas City Chiefs in white with red boots.
- 26:34Carol Wilson stepping back to the 31-yard line, and Willie Wold and Donnie Anderson
- 26:39are within their 15, standing at about the 12.
- 26:44Wilson, with all the time in the world, rules one, bribing Anderson back to the 5.
- 26:49Coming wide to his left, that's a blind block, he's up to the 10, fast to come down the side across the 15,
- 26:56and has pulled on from behind as he hits the 20-yard line by a number 52,
- 27:00one of the linebackers of Kansas City, Bud Ager.
- 27:03A good rookie from the University of Missouri, first and 10th of green.
- 27:09And just over the 20-yard line.
- 27:19Note that Chuck Hurston of the Kansas City Chiefs was injured going down under the punt truck,
- 27:24of course, a defensive end for the Chiefs, and he's taken off the field on the far side.
- 27:29No score, nine minutes and 10 seconds to go, Bob Starr on the Green Bay offense,
- 27:33back in there is still Elijah Pitts, who has the ball now and is running wide to the right.
- 27:40Freddie Williamson came up to hitting, but he bounced off Williamson, and Pitts went up to the 24,
- 27:46game three, it'll be second down and seven.
- 27:53Green Bay with Bob Starr, Elijah Pitts still starting his running halfback,
- 27:57and Max McGee has replaced Boyd Taller, who has an injured shoulder, Carol Dale, and Mar Fleming.
- 28:05Nine minutes left to go, first quarter, no score, Green Bay with the ball on second down,
- 28:12and a long seven, Starr dropping straight back, throws over the center,
- 28:16is the victim, Mar Fleming, he's got the first down across the 30,
- 28:19down to the 34 yard line, Fleming, a fine, tied in from the University of Utah, who caught 31 passes this year,
- 28:27about that one had rolled out near the 30 top, was down for the Packers, their second of them all game.
- 28:33Great catch by Fleming, who was juggling the ball when he was hit,
- 28:36and nevertheless managed to get it under his control.
- 28:39You know, the Green Bay receivers could be fighting for something today,
- 28:42because in the comparison between the two clubs, all week long it's been pointed out that Kansas City
- 28:46has better receivers, and this isn't going to make the Green Bay receivers happy.
- 28:50Dale, or rather Dale, is the target of the left, as Starr goes straight back in trouble,
- 28:55runs out of the pocket, gets the ball away, that pitch depends on the pitchers,
- 28:59across the 50, down to the 45, under the 43.
- 29:03I tell you which, Mark Starr had to scramble from a massive tacklers, led by Jerry Mays,
- 29:10as he stepped out of the pocket and found Elijah Pitts at the 45, and erased it down to the 43,
- 29:16but the Kansas City Chiefs were Green Bay in the scoreless ball game, as the ball first in 10.
- 29:21There's timeout on the field with the score, Green Bay nothing, and Kansas City nothing.
- 29:29Along with George Rautemann, this is Jim Simpson from the Coliseum in Los Angeles,
- 29:37in the scoreless ball game, first quarter, 7 minutes 20 seconds to go.
- 29:41Aaron Brown, the rookie and number one draft choice from Minnesota, has come in as a defensive right-hand,
- 29:47as Chuck Hurston is out injured, $4 with Green Bay as a quick pitch to Jim Taylor,
- 29:52coming to the left, in trouble, and will be dragged out for a loss, back in Green Bay territory.
- 29:58EJ Holler, the right-side linebacker, was, now he just refused to be taken out of the play.
- 30:03Jerry Mays, the wall in the American Football League defensive left hand, came over to help out,
- 30:08and the ball now is placed down on the 49 of Kansas City, a loss of about 5 at second and 15.
- 30:19The AFL NFL Championship, this is the Super Bowl.
- 30:24Being heard across these United States and the first in the world in Armed Forces radio,
- 30:29we have Carol Dale wide to the right, the key to the left, Mark Starr dropping straight back, looking.
- 30:34That's plenty of time.
- 30:36Throw in to Carol Dale, he's got the ball at the 37-yard line, not enough for the first down.
- 30:41Marty Woodibson, the left cornerback from Northwestern, made the stop there.
- 30:45And again, George Bradderman, a low pass, and Carol Dale did well to die for it, and got a quick hit.
- 30:50A low pass, but those would be kind that can't be intercepted, they can't be deflected up into the air,
- 30:55they can't be high enough for a defensive man to come in, and actually a passer will try to throw the ball on their low sometimes,
- 31:01on a pattern such as that where the receiver is coming back toward the middle of the field or toward the passer.
- 31:08Third down, three, from the 37.
- 31:12Dale to the right, the key to the left, Starr dropping straight back, it is easy.
- 31:16It throws, hands the ball, and it's a touchdown. That right-fired defensive back, the middle of the line back, is the one to step on.
- 31:25Max McEve, and his young hand with the head of the knee on it, but McEve said they ripped his way out of his glass,
- 31:32but it's a 37-yard touchdown for him.
- 31:35A great catch by McEve, who you might say had no business catching the ball.
- 31:45Actually, it wasn't too well thrown. McGree made a great stand though, and the defensive man there,
- 31:52I'm sure, thought that McGee had no chance to get it.
- 31:56Onchandler will do the extra point kicking.
- 32:00Ball is placed down, the kick is up, and the kick is good.
- 32:04And it's time on the field for the score down, Green Bay 7, Kansas City, nothing.
- 32:11Onchandler will kick it off, 6 minutes, 4 seconds to go here in the first quarter.
- 32:15The Packers have scored first on the pass to McGee, who made a great catch and a fine run.
- 32:20Cohn and Garrett are deep, but as Mike Garrett will take it at the 2.
- 32:24Garrett goes to his left, but it's back to his right, looking for daylight,
- 32:27steps you on one man across the 20, flags go down.
- 32:30Over on the 27-yard line as Mike Garrett has run out of bounds at the 24.
- 32:35And we'll wait to see what the flags say.
- 32:38All of the officials, and remember there are six officials here today,
- 32:42three from each league.
- 32:45And they're in consultation now to 26-yard line.
- 32:51Racing in very quickly to see what is going on is Cheryl Henrich.
- 32:57And it looks as though it's going to be kipping coming up against Kansas City,
- 33:00which of course will put the Chiefs deep in the hole, and that's what they're doing,
- 33:04is stepping off yardage back inside the 15-yard line and placing the ball down on the 12.
- 33:13We pause 10 seconds for station identification.
- 33:17Eight-ten, good eye, WGY is going to be a general electric broadcasting company station.
- 33:30Jim Simpson with George Wademan, first down on the 13-yard line.
- 33:35Berkert goes to the left, Taylor is flipped to the right.
- 33:38Dawson following signals, 7-0, Green Bay leads, Dawson rolls out, going to pass from his end zone.
- 33:46Across the 10, now has one in the 15, coming out to the 20, flag down on the 21-yard line.
- 33:52The scrambling of Len Dawson, apparent there, George Wademan, and Ray Mitchke came over,
- 33:56made the stop at the 21, instead of being thrown near his end zone, he got out and across the 20.
- 34:03Packers put a lot of pressure on Dawson that time, he went back, as he will do frequently,
- 34:07faked a running play before going back to pass, faked the draw play.
- 34:11The Packers, however, didn't go for the fake, went back and put a lot of pressure on Dawson,
- 34:16but he showed his scrambling ability by hitting loose there, gaining about 7, 7-1-1-2 yards on his run.
- 34:23In the second formation, Taylor split wide left with Burford setting the slot to the left.
- 34:32Dawson on a quick little pitch to the side, and down he goes.
- 34:37Race down is Waddle Aldrich making the tackle and getting up on the slot, he has Mike Garrett, the man who caught the pass.
- 34:44Just a little quick pitch to his backfield man, as Dawson, of course, is trying to pick up the yardage
- 34:49and may have gotten nearly enough for the post down, they're going to call for a measurement.
- 34:537-0 to Green Bay Tigers lead, we are here in the first quarter, about four and a half minutes left.
- 35:00And again, Dawson faked the running play, faked one of his running backs before throwing that quick pitch out there too, Garrett.
- 35:07Of course, the purpose of that faking the running play is to try to hold one of the linebackers in position
- 35:12so that he cannot get caught into the flat and cover the pass receiver, in this case, Garrett.
- 35:16Measurements showed that it was good for a first down, Kansas City has a first down on their own 23 yard line.
- 35:22And good for the first down by perhaps a quarter of an inch.
- 35:25Otis Taylor wide right, Burford goes to the left.
- 35:29Ardanis, the tight end, is split about a yard or two to the left.
- 35:33Quick opener, and down goes Burford, the ball goes over his head and defensive interference is being followed on the far sideline
- 35:41as Burford was knocked off his feet by Bob Jeter and Tommy Brown before he even ducked the ball.
- 35:48I'm sure that the penalty is being called against Jeter.
- 35:51In any event, a gain of oh, just a couple of yards, but takes it up to the 29 yard line,
- 35:56but of course it means it's a first down from there.
- 35:58And the ball thrown by Dawson was nowhere near the receiver, way over his head out of bounds,
- 36:02but Jeter was up so fast on Burford, I would rather think that Dawson purposely threw it out there.
- 36:07He knew he had no chance for a completion, didn't want to have it intercepted,
- 36:11just threw it over Burford's head and was fortunate that Jeter came up and interfered on the play.
- 36:17There at this time is good wide right with Burford set in the sock to the right.
- 36:22Curtis McClendon for the first time today gets the call to carry the ball,
- 36:26it goes out across the 30 yard line and picks up perhaps four yards on the play.
- 36:32Stop is made by Ronald Roberts and Willie Davis, the defensive bands, and George.
- 36:36This is what a lot of people have been waiting for, to see whether or not the Kansas City Chiefs
- 36:40can hold up under the pressure of an early score by Green Bay.
- 36:44Well, the Chiefs were hurt not only by that score, but then when they received the kickoff,
- 36:48they were penalized because they were holding on, returning the kickoff,
- 36:51or really putting the hole that they've come out here, made a first down,
- 36:54now picked up three yards on the first down here, so they showed they can operate under pressure.
- 36:59Here it is, the loan setback, Dawson rolls to his left, looks downfield,
- 37:03Davis is there, and down to the 40 yard line of Green Bay for a first down.
- 37:09Lee Roy Cappie, the linebacker, forced to cover up in Ovanis, made the tackle,
- 37:13but now into left Ovanis, back the pass from Dawson in the first down.
- 37:19Ball is placed down now on the 49 yard line of Kansas City.
- 37:23Green Bay scored on a 37 yard pass play from Bart Scott to Max McGee,
- 37:28and Henrik, well, Henrik, as George Rodham and Zed Proble, they thought that McGee
- 37:33never had a chance for the ball, but McGee made a great catch at about the 23
- 37:38and raced it in from there.
- 37:42Getter, wide right, Overford to the left, McClinton and Garrett, the setbacks.
- 37:46Dawson on first down from his own 49, hands to Mike Garrett,
- 37:49is it Dawson, could it be Dawson 45, and spins his way out into the 21 yard line.
- 37:54Near, up first down, Tom Brown, number 40, makes his stop along with Lee Roy Cappie,
- 37:59and they will measure to see whether or not it is a first down.
- 38:03It is close to the first down.
- 38:09Coming to the sound of the field is one of the officials, 7 to nothing, Green Bay,
- 38:14on that pass to McGee, and there's time out on the field right now,
- 38:17with a score of Green Bay 7, Kansas City, nothing.
- 38:24Two minutes and 55 seconds to go, and this, the first quarter of the AFL Winner
- 38:28Bowl Championship, the Super Bowl from the Coliseum of Los Angeles,
- 38:32under sunny skies, little or no wind, and in the second down, an inches to go
- 38:37for Kansas City.
- 38:38Overford goes out as a flacker to the left, high formation now,
- 38:42Garrett steps over to the right.
- 38:46Other ends are in tight.
- 38:47Dawson on second down of inches is back to pass, with lots of time now in trouble,
- 38:51looking, gets past one man, has his own first down across the 40 yard line,
- 38:55and is driven back across the 41.
- 38:57Dawson looking for a running room, did get enough for the first down.
- 39:01The way of niche speed, the middle linebacker came up very quickly,
- 39:04and threw him back across the 40.
- 39:06Ball will be spotted at the 39.
- 39:09First down for Kansas City, the Chiefs credit 7-0 to Green Bay.
- 39:13Another example of Lenny Dawson not throwing the ball when nobody is open downfield.
- 39:18He tried to cross Green Bay up, had a second in one situation,
- 39:21faked the running play into the line, acted as if they were going for the first down,
- 39:25then stepped back to throw, saw that Berthold was not open downfield,
- 39:28and you will not see Lenny Dawson or Bart Starr, for that matter,
- 39:31turn the ball loose unless the receiver is open.
- 39:35Taylor wide right, Berthold set in the slot, and Mike Gern with the ball,
- 39:39and down he goes, press it down by big number 89.
- 39:42The next side on backer, Dave Robinson of Penn State,
- 39:45and Mike actually lost the yard in the play, back to the 40 yard line,
- 39:49it will be second down and 11.
- 39:53There have been two injuries that we have noted so far.
- 39:56Boyd Dallar hit his shoulder and went out early, and Max McGee replaced him.
- 40:00It was McGee that cut the touchdown pads.
- 40:03And Chuck Hurston went out for Kansas City, and Aaron Brown has replaced him as a defensive right end.
- 40:09Brown, the number one draft choice from the University of Minnesota.
- 40:12Now, Brokert goes to the left side, Otis Taylor trots over here to the right on second down, 11.
- 40:20Garrett goes in motion to the left.
- 40:23Dawson rolling out to the left, looking to throw, it's one of them all.
- 40:27Right over the head of Otis Taylor, who is being defended against by Willie Wood, number 24, from USC.
- 40:34Ball falling dead out of bounds, it's about the seven yard line,
- 40:37and again Dawson throwing extra long, preventing an interception.
- 40:41It is third and 11.
- 40:43Now, running out on this, the first quarter, a little bit more than a minute to go.
- 40:48Seven to nothing, Green Bay leading.
- 40:52Willie Wood had position on Taylor, defending against Taylor that time.
- 40:56The ball was thrown deep down the field.
- 40:59Dawson trying to hit Taylor deep, but Wood had position on him and wouldn't let Taylor get deep.
- 41:03And of course, he doesn't have to get out of his way.
- 41:05He just maintained his position so that Taylor couldn't get deep to where the ball was going to come down.
- 41:10For a good wide left, Reg Carolyn has now replaced Wood on bonus, and he has split left also.
- 41:14Taylor split to the right, and Dawson is dropping straight back and looking and has his man, Carolyn,
- 41:20across the 35, down to the 33 yard line.
- 41:24Down and up for the first down, but Reg Carolyn made the catch, and Wayne Nitsky of Illinois,
- 41:29the middle linebacker, made the stop.
- 41:33And every up a fourth down, Gerald Wilson is coming in, Mike Mercer is coming in,
- 41:39and Mike Mercer is, of course, the field goal kicker.
- 41:42He is in on 32, or rather 33-33 conversion attempts, 20 of 26 field goals, and has scored 93 points.
- 41:51This will be a 40 yard field goal attempt, as the Chiefs try to get on the board for the first time.
- 41:56Mike Mercer is ready.
- 41:58Dawson spots the ball. The kick is up.
- 42:02It is long, and it is off to the left side, and the Chiefs have failed to score.
- 42:07Green Bay takes over on the 20th, still leading 7-0, with a little bit more than a minute,
- 42:14about a minute and 5 seconds to go here in the first quarter.
- 42:18Mercer had enough distance on the ball.
- 42:20It had been said early in the season that Mercer could not kick long,
- 42:23but he's kicked some long field goals this year for Kansas City.
- 42:26Kick that one far enough, it went about 5 yards deep into the end zone, but was off to the left.
- 42:32Well, there he goes out wide to the right, Bard Starr, now dropping back.
- 42:36As the official is talking to them, we were glad to have in the pregame show Bob Hope.
- 42:42And of course, we'd like to remind you again of Bob Hope's Desert Golf Classic,
- 42:46which will be on NBC Radio February the 4th and 5th.
- 42:51The clip reports, Chuck Hurston has now gone back in, so apparently Hurston,
- 42:56a two-year veteran from Auburn, was not seriously hurt.
- 43:006'6", 230.
- 43:02And George and I have pointed out before that Kansas City, the underdog in this ballgame,
- 43:08has conceded the advantage in weight offensively and defensively,
- 43:12and has conceded the advantage in speed.
- 43:15But they are trailing to the Panthers by the score of 7-0.
- 43:20And we have an unusual situation here where one of these ball clubs has called a timeout in the first quarter.
- 43:25Kansas City called one a few moments ago, and I'm not certain who called this one,
- 43:31but this is quite unusual because most ball clubs will try to save their timeouts
- 43:36until the end of the half that they're in.
- 43:3834 seconds to go on this quarter, Carroll Dale is wide to the right.
- 43:41On first down, Jim Taylor is giving the job of cracking over the right side of his own line,
- 43:46and he picks up 2 or 3 yards, perhaps.
- 43:49And Ryan Rice is at the bottom of the pile from Texas 7, along with Buck Buchanan.
- 43:54Left tackle and right tackle respectively.
- 43:56Clark is running. They may or may not get another play away in this quarter.
- 44:00At halftime, George Vandermen will be talking to Lance Olwell,
- 44:03the fine piker from the San Diego Chargers,
- 44:06and the good quarterback, Don Meredith-Adonis, who very nearly beat these Green Bay Packers in the NFL Championship game.
- 44:12Five running out, but out of the huddle comes Green Bay.
- 44:16Star on second down and 7 starting back at the ball, but the gun's up, and the first quarter is over.
- 44:25That's the end of the first quarter.
- 44:27The score, Green Bay 7 and Kansas City, not in.
- 44:35Second down and 7 from the 23-yard line of Green Bay,
- 44:39the Packers leading on the touchdown pass to Max McGee with a little bit more than 6 minutes to go on the first quarter.
- 44:45Carro Dale goes out wide left, split to the right.
- 44:48Here's Max McGee, the touchdown maker, with Elijah Pitts still in there along with Jim Taylor.
- 44:54Potsdard walks straight back and looks and overthrows McGee at the sidelines at the 29.
- 44:59Fred Woodinson over to the bed at the 29.
- 45:02So that'll be 37.
- 45:07Now this is the day that many have been waiting for.
- 45:10As a matter of fact, in the pregame Valley, who of this the Super Bowl,
- 45:14many business magazines even check with networks about the amount of promotion being done,
- 45:19not only by the networks, but by the ball clubs themselves and the national and the American football leagues.
- 45:24Such has been the buildup to this game.
- 45:26Carro Dale goes wide to the left. McGee again to the right.
- 45:29Star dropping back on third down, 7.
- 45:31Flag is down. Across the middle, juggling up in the air, no good.
- 45:35And Jennifer Carro Dale at the 45-yard line, and riding him down was Willie Mitchell of Tennessee State,
- 45:43a third-year veteran, but a flag went down on the play.
- 45:46The back talking to back star, but now they're signaling for a Kansas City man to jump in and talk with him.
- 45:53So obviously the penalty is going to be against the Packers.
- 45:57Cheryl Henrich is talking it over with the referee.
- 46:00The referee today is of the National Football League, Norman Schachter.
- 46:08A legal procedure charged against the Packers is to be refused
- 46:12because they're going to make it fourth down and setting, and the Packers' Don Chandler is coming to kick it away.
- 46:17Emmett Thomas and Mike Garrett are stepping back to their own 30-yard line.
- 46:21In punt formation, Green Bay leading early in the second quarter, 7 to nothing to score.
- 46:26Under sunny skies in Los Angeles, Chandler, standing at his own 10-yard line, gets the boot away from the 14.
- 46:33A long spiral, Emmett Thomas takes it at the 33.
- 46:36Scouts backwards, now comes back up field across the 30, and is finally wrestled down at the 34-yard line
- 46:43by Steve Wright, a third-year veteran from the University of Alabama.
- 46:47And Kansas City will get its hands on the ball again, trailing by the score of 7-0.
- 46:53Packers cover quite well going down under these punts.
- 46:57It's quite impressive to see them come down and take their positions across the field,
- 47:01boxing in the receiver so that he has no place to go.
- 47:06Kansas City tried to return that one the first time Kansas, or the first time Green Bay punted.
- 47:11Kansas City tried to block it. This time they did not try to block the punt.
- 47:14They tried to get back and block for the man catching the punt.
- 47:17Aldous Taylor, plank quad right. Burford split about five yards to the left.
- 47:21Len Dawson on first down from the 33, rolling to the right, being pursued.
- 47:26And now goes back across field of Mike Gadd at the 35, gets away from two men.
- 47:31Aldous Taylor, across the 45, near midfield, down to the 49-yard line in the first round goes Mike Gadd.
- 47:39With a twisting of 21, he must have stepped away from five or six men.
- 47:44The commander of the best shot at him was the linebacker Dave Robinson.
- 47:48But there at Kristydell, of his arms and really would,
- 47:51finally had to make the stop at the 49 of the Packers. And that made the USC partisans draw their belts in.
- 47:58Because Mike is a former great player there.
- 48:01Typical Garrett round, and Garrett got up and just walked off the field, which does not mean he's injured,
- 48:05just a little bush. After that round, you heard just tell the players,
- 48:08anytime your bush come out of the ballgame, we'll put somebody in for you, at least for one play.
- 48:13Taylor, plank to the right. Burford, split to the left.
- 48:18Ball is handed off to Garrett again, and Garrett gets down to the 45-yard line.
- 48:22Check that. It is Burke Cohn who's come in for Mike Garrett, and Cohn, after Garrett's fine run,
- 48:27cracks across his own left side and down to the 45.
- 48:31Ball is placed back down near the 46, so we'll call it a game of only three, a long three at that.
- 48:36It'll be second down, seventh.
- 48:38Burke Cohn of Kansas, was an All-American at Kansas, was injured in spring practice.
- 48:44And for years, many have predicted that he would be a great star in the American Football League.
- 48:48At the beginning of this year, he started out as though he would be, but he became injured.
- 48:53Both Burford and Taylor are on the left side, with Taylor split left, and Burford set in the slot.
- 48:59Straight ahead goes McClendon on a crop play, down to the 40, down to the 39-yard line, and near her first down.
- 49:05And we can't help but recall the National Football League Championship game,
- 49:09where Don Clarkins of Dallas was working the crop play well against these same packers.
- 49:14Third down, a little bit more than a yard, and now Green Bay sends in Bob Brown on defense,
- 49:21and out comes Ron Kostelnik, so Brown will step into a tackle spot,
- 49:26operating with Jordan Aldrich and Davis along the board wall.
- 49:31Third down and about a yard.
- 49:35Dawson has him out of the huddle, hands off to Cone. Cone has got the first down, down to the 37-yard line.
- 49:42Burt Cone of the University of Kansas, operating in the same backfield, with Curtis McClendon, another former All-American at Kansas.
- 49:49And with Burt Cone in for Mike Garrett, for Kansas City, they have a lot of size in the running backs.
- 49:54Burt Cone stands 6 feet 4, weighs 220. Curtis McClendon, the fullback, stands 6 feet 3 and weighs 227.
- 50:02So two big, rangy running backs in there at the present time for Kansas City.
- 50:07About 12 minutes to go in the second quarter, the first half, Green Bay leading 7-0,
- 50:12but Kansas City has the ball. Dawson back to pass with plenty of time.
- 50:17Luke's one yard for Taylor, who's killing it. He's going to the yard line, he's right down there.
- 50:23Oh, Taylor was deep in the back of his man and actually had to show up for the pass.
- 50:28It's Tom Brown covering it. First down and goal to go at the 7.
- 50:33And again, Lenny Dawson helped to free his receiver, as he does quite frequently by faking the running play before throwing the ball to Taylor.
- 50:41Taylor was wide open and Lenny was careful, didn't lead him too much, threw the ball out there perfectly.
- 50:46And Lenny Dawson helped ever so much on that play, as he does quite frequently on his pass plays,
- 50:51by faking the running play first to his running backs, drawing in the Green Bay secondary, and then hitting his receiver downfield.
- 50:58And now Kansas City with a chance comes out on the I-formation to tie this ballgame. They would like to do it.
- 51:04Throwing shifts to the right, Tony McClinton to setbacks, Dawson calling signals on first down, keeps to the ball,
- 51:10rolls out to the right, he's going to man, Troy Putschbein!
- 51:14Putschbein! And it is 7-6 Green Bay. And he not only had a man clear, he had two men clear down in the end zone.
- 51:24Chris Burkert and McClinton were standing down there side by side as, once again, as we described on the last play, Lenny Dawson made the good play,
- 51:33faked the running play, ended the line, and then stepped back, found two receivers side by side down in the end zone.
- 51:39Mike Mercer, who tried a 40-yard field goal and missed, but is 33 for 33 in the conversion department,
- 51:48comes in and tries to tie up this Super Bowl game, which has been super so far.
- 51:54Ball is placed down, the kick is in the air, and the kick is broke, tie ballgame!
- 52:00It's time out on the field, it is 4 Green Bay 7, Kansas City 7.
- 52:05This is Jim Simpson, along with George Rattaman from the Coliseum in Los Angeles.
- 52:147-7 ballgame this Super Bowl, 10 minutes 41 seconds to go in the first half.
- 52:19Fletcher Smith will kick it off. Donnie Anderson and Herb Adelie are deep, both are dangerous.
- 52:24Smith really puts his foot into this one.
- 52:27And this is Anderson across the 15 coming straight up the middle, and as thin as he gets to the 25 and rolls to the 27-yard line.
- 52:35Bobby Pry, a Baylor 5-year veteran, made the tackle, along with Gerald Wilson.
- 52:42Ball is placed down on the 27 of the Packers, who have bound themselves high.
- 52:47And what prestige is in this ballgame?
- 52:49The pride of the National Football League is carried on the shoulders of the Green Bay Packers,
- 52:53and the pride of the Younger American Football League, with the Kansas City Chiefs leading the way.
- 52:58Carol Dale goes wide to the left.
- 53:00McGee has split about 5 yards to the right.
- 53:03Elijah Pitts and Jim Taylor's cleaners up back.
- 53:06Ball honing has not been seen yet.
- 53:08This is Elijah Pitts, goes across his own left side, and is dragged down as he gets across the 30, out near the 32-yard line.
- 53:14A pick-up of about 5. Buck Buchanan made the tackle there.
- 53:18It is Mays, Weiss, Buchanan, and Hurston for Kansas City along the forward wall, Bobby Bell, Cheryl Hibbert,
- 53:24Zuzia Hollett, the linebackers, Cardi Whittinson, Bobby Hunt, Johnny Robinson, and Willie Mitchell, the deep men.
- 53:31Second down and 5 after the 5-yard gain, and again, it is Carol Dale to the left,
- 53:36and McGee split about 5 yards to the right.
- 53:38Fleming, the tight end, is on the left side.
- 53:41Strong side right, Jim Taylor, rolling along the line of scrimmage,
- 53:46and he picks up a yard or two on individual effort and near the first down,
- 53:50but he was hit almost as he hit the line of scrimmage by Terry Mays.
- 53:54And again, you'll notice Green Bay coming back to their basic power offenses.
- 53:58Any good football team will do. When they've been hurt, when they've been scored on,
- 54:02they will come back to the things that they do best, and this is the best of the Green Bay offense,
- 54:07the straight power plays, the off-tackle power plays, the power plays around end.
- 54:11Nothing fancy at all.
- 54:13Third down and 1, Green Bay scored first on a 37-yard pass play from Starr to McGee.
- 54:18Kansas City came back moments ago on a 7-yard pass play from Dawson to McQuinty.
- 54:237-7 to score, third down 1.
- 54:26Starr gambling has hit, now Dale, 4-4, and he will go all the way and score on third down 1.
- 54:34Fox Starr caught the Kansas City secondary thinking of something else.
- 54:38And there's a flag down, up at midfield, and the Packers are walking slowly back upfield.
- 54:49And ignoring the flag, which looks all displayed back, and we'll take the touchdown away from Green Bay,
- 54:56we can say nothing except that was a marvelous call by Bart Starr, because as I have been saying,
- 55:03as everybody here has been thinking and realizes, Green Bay is a basic power ball club.
- 55:08As we mentioned, they go to their basic power attack.
- 55:11So on third and 1, Bart Starr crossed the ball up by faking the running play
- 55:17and hitting his receiver all the way down field.
- 55:20Unfortunately for Bart, the pass from Mark Fleming has been called back
- 55:24because an infraction against Green Bay was detected on that play, a 15-yard penalty.
- 55:30Check that Georgia was a 5-yard penalty for illegal motion.
- 55:34It was a 5-yard touchdown and nearly 6 yards.
- 55:37And I'm sure that the Kansas City secondary is talking to itself what a break they had to have the ball called back.
- 55:44So now on the important third down 6, Starr drops back to flow again, goes over the middle, and has his man.
- 55:51It is Max McGee, and McGee has the first down out across the board with a 21.
- 55:56Tom Robinson made the stop there, so the Packers, who have had that long touchdown play called back,
- 56:04came right back and picked up the important first down with their own 42.
- 56:10Harold Dale has come back in, and Max McGee has gone out.
- 56:13It was Dale who made the sprint for what he thought was a touchdown, only to have it called back.
- 56:18Dale goes out wide to the left, and Bob Long is now in as Kansas City is going to call a tie-off.
- 56:25After what has happened, George Ratham and I are assuming that Kansas City's defense and Cheryl Henry,
- 56:30even now, is walking to the far sidelines along with Bobby Ply, and they're going to talk things over with Hank Stratham.
- 56:37But while they do, we say there's tie-off on the field with the score of 3-37 and Kansas City 7.
- 56:45Ball is on the 42-yard line, first and 10 for the Packers in the 7-7 ball game.
- 56:49We're midway through the second quarter.
- 56:51Starr goes back to throw, looks downfield, his receiver comes back up and cannot hold onto it.
- 56:56Covered very closely by Woody Mitchell.
- 56:58It was Carroll Dale, to whom the ball was intended.
- 57:01And Woody Mitchell at Tennessee State was right there.
- 57:04Starr, as he has done several times, kept the ball low and kept the possibility or probability of an interception to nearly nil.
- 57:14As George Ratham pointed out, Starr has only had three passes in an interception all year long.
- 57:237-7, and I want to tell you, Los Angeles, if nothing else, turned on one of the greatest days for football.
- 57:29In mid-January, you could see perfect playing conditions, perhaps a little warm for the players, but for the spectators, just great.
- 57:36Dale is to the left and Bob Long is to the right.
- 57:38Starr going straight back.
- 57:40The ball goes down. He has Elijah Pitts covered by a linebacker, E.J. Hollis.
- 57:46The Stars pass was off the mark.
- 57:49And I think a screen pass was called that time by Bart Starr.
- 57:53I think Green Bay was trying to throw a screen pass out here to the right.
- 57:57Kansas City diagnosed the play very well, and he had nobody to whom throw the ball,
- 58:01so he looked for one of these decoys that was going downfield and perhaps just threw it away purposely.
- 58:05But I believe the play called was a screen pass to the right,
- 58:09and I think he was very well that he could not complain if because Kansas City had diagnosed the play.
- 58:13Third down 10 on the Packers own 42-yard line.
- 58:16They send Dale to the left and Bob Long comes to the right.
- 58:207-7 the score.
- 58:23Here in the second quarter, Dale almost jumped offside, goes back, Starr drops back.
- 58:28The throw goes across, has his man Dale in the clear at the 43-yard line, and that's the be-all for the first down.
- 58:34Knocked down there by Bobby Hunt and Johnny Robinson, but Carol Dale made the catch,
- 58:42and it's a first down on the Packers in the 7-7 ball game, come roaring right back.
- 58:51This is the Super Bowl, and of course a lot of people are saying which is the better league,
- 58:55but I'm sure that you'll agree it comes down to which is the better team on the field today.
- 59:00Long is split wide to the right.
- 59:04Ball is handed to Jim Taylor, running not only to his left,
- 59:07but as he turns the ball about, Willie Mitchell who simply dove at his feet.
- 59:11Mitchell is 6'1", 185, Jim Taylor is 6'2", 215,
- 59:16but the way and the power with which Jim Taylor runs both legend are.
- 59:22Mark Starr has been putting a lot of pressure on Willie Mitchell,
- 59:26the defensive right cornerback of Kansas City.
- 59:28He's thrown quite a few passes out there to receivers who have gone down about 5 or 8 yards
- 59:33and turned in toward the middle of the field.
- 59:35Now he sends Taylor on a running player on that end,
- 59:37so they're putting a lot of pressure on Willie Mitchell, the right cornerback of Kansas City.
- 59:41Boyd Deller, we understand, is out for the game, and this is third down, 6.
- 59:45Pitts picks up a couple of yards, make it second down, 6.
- 59:49It'll be third down with about 4.
- 59:51Now, we'll repeat, Boyd Deller is out for the game.
- 59:55Apparently, he suffered quite an injury and will be out for the ballgame,
- 59:59and the good flanker back who've made 29 catches this year will not see any further action.
- 1:00:04While there's time out on the field, with the score, Green Bay 7 and Kansas City 7.
- 1:00:14Along with George Broderman, this is Jim Simpson back at the Coliseum in Los Angeles.
- 1:00:18It is third down and 5 from the 38-yard line of Kansas City-Green Bay in possession
- 1:00:24with Carrol Dale to the right side and Bob Long split left.
- 1:00:30Star calling signals, drop straight back on third down.
- 1:00:33Looks across the center and a great catch by Mara Fleming.
- 1:00:37Inside the 30-yard line and that'll be enough for the post-down.
- 1:00:40Fleming was smothered by Cheryl Hedrick and Johnny Robinson,
- 1:00:44but jumped up between them and made the catch.
- 1:00:46And the packer, George Broderman, are on the move again.
- 1:00:50And the packer receivers thus far in this ballgame have shown great ability
- 1:00:54in catching balls that weren't necessarily thrown right in the pocket,
- 1:00:57right where they should be, but they've been reaching behind and in front of them,
- 1:01:01juggling the balls, but continuously coming up with the balls and all the difficult catches.
- 1:01:06Max McGee has come back in, Dale to the right,
- 1:01:10handoff and straight ahead goes Jim Taylor,
- 1:01:13but Gary Mays does not allow him to get more than a yard or two as he gets down near the 25-yard line.
- 1:01:20Mays, two-time All-League in the American Football League, played the ball at SMU
- 1:01:24six years in the league, 6-4, 252.
- 1:01:30Kansas City, Sloan getting up, 77 to score.
- 1:01:34I'm running out here in a first half.
- 1:01:43Five minutes and 41 seconds to go in this half.
- 1:01:46Dale is to the right and McGee to the left, both split.
- 1:01:53Second down, star hands off to Elijah Pitts, who gets another yard or two and that's all.
- 1:01:59Off to Cadden, the right tackle and George, perhaps the defense of Kansas City has surprised a lot of people thus far.
- 1:02:09I think particularly their defense against the Green Bay running attack.
- 1:02:13They have looked very good against Green Bay's running,
- 1:02:16but Green Bay has been able to come back in these third down situations and pick up the first down by throwing the football.
- 1:02:22Of course, Bart Starr is famous for that. He's regarded as just about the best third down thrower in football
- 1:02:27and as we mentioned before, they've been picking a lot on Willie Mitchell, the defensive right cornerback of Kansas City,
- 1:02:32so let's see if they do it again here.
- 1:02:34And this is another third down situation as you said. McGee is to the left, Dallas to the right, star throws to Pitts,
- 1:02:41and Pitts goes out of bounds. He made the catch for the first down inside the 15-14 yard line.
- 1:02:47And this happened before when the ball was over thrown.
- 1:02:49E.J. Harrop, the linebacker, had the assignment of covering Elijah Pitts.
- 1:02:54He will find the outside linebackers of Kansas City, Hollabam Bell, especially Bell, very fast,
- 1:03:00but the pack remains if the Packers have marched right back down field.
- 1:03:04They had a touchdown call back when on third and one in their own territory,
- 1:03:10Bart Starr, a man until about two weeks ago, everyone said would not gamble, gambled down Carroll Dale,
- 1:03:16and he went all the way to score, but it was called back, illegal procedure.
- 1:03:20Taylor's Thomas flipped to the right from the 14. Jim Taylor starts around the left side,
- 1:03:24sets back inside the 10-5, slow down!
- 1:03:28On 14 yards out, and Taylor was hit by Hurston at the line of scrimmage, but simply broke the tackle.
- 1:03:39And a great example of this Green Bay power offense is four green jerseys went around the left end
- 1:03:46at that time, one of them belonging to Jim Taylor, who had the football,
- 1:03:50with three blockers right there with him, three blockers right in front of him,
- 1:03:54and any time you can turn the corner, get around the end with three blockers in front of you,
- 1:03:58you're going to go a long way, and of course, Jim Taylor doesn't need any instructions on how to get
- 1:04:02into the goal line under situations such as that.
- 1:04:05On channel in, and the ball was held by Starr, the pick is good, and Green Bay goes out in front,
- 1:04:11and on the 13 yards in 14 plays.
- 1:04:17A reminder, as we've got about four and a half minutes to go, and this is the first half,
- 1:04:20that our halftime guests will be Lance Aulworth, a fine flagger, the San Diego Chargers,
- 1:04:25many times in all league selection, as well as Don Meredith, who took Dallas to the Eastern Division title
- 1:04:31in the National Football League, and with it a whisker, George Radaman, of having won the National Football League championship.
- 1:04:38That was one of the great games.
- 1:04:39Don Meredith and his Cowboys certainly looked great against Green Bay two weeks ago.
- 1:04:43A reminder also that NBC Radio, here today for the Super Bowl, the AFL-NFL Championship,
- 1:04:48will journey down the coast a little bit of England to Palm Desert, California,
- 1:04:52to the Bob Hope Desert Classic, on NBC Radio February the 4th and 5th.
- 1:04:59Channer will kick off 14 to 7 to score, four and a half minutes to go in the first half.
- 1:05:04Green Bay scored first on a 37-yard touchdown pass to McGee from Starr in the second quarter.
- 1:05:12Lenny Dawson took his team down the field, much of it on the running of Mike Garrett.
- 1:05:16Finally, he hit Curtis McClendon for a score from 7 yards out to top 7-7.
- 1:05:20And now on, Jim Taylor's run, 14-yard run that kept the 73-yard drive, the Packers have gone right back in front.
- 1:05:28Channer is ready to kick off.
- 1:05:30It is Cohn and Garrett, or Deep, Garrett at the 10, across the 15.
- 1:05:36Balancing off his own men, using his hands to try to set up his blocks,
- 1:05:41and as highly knocked down as he hits out to the 26-yard line.
- 1:05:44Dave Hathcock, the Memphis State, a rookie defensive back, made the tackle there.
- 1:05:54High formation shifting now, with Taylor and Albanus split right, Burford split to the left,
- 1:05:59and now Garrett is in the...
- 1:06:01Well, here comes Dawson, rolling out to the left, and he is in trouble.
- 1:06:04Can't get the ball away, knocked down, it's like a 15-yard line.
- 1:06:08Back there was Henry Gordon leading the way, but also the defensive right-hand line on Aldridge,
- 1:06:13the right side of the Green Bay line simply fell through.
- 1:06:17Now, still it got there before it was all over.
- 1:06:20And also the play from the 26 back to the 18-yard line.
- 1:06:26Second down and about 18 to go.
- 1:06:2814 to 7, the Packers have led and are leading, or tied and are leading again.
- 1:06:35Packers heavily favored have not made substitutions other than the fact that
- 1:06:41because of the injury to Board Dyer, they were running in many different receivers.
- 1:06:45High formation, Taylor goes wide to the right.
- 1:06:47This time, again, they shift with McClinton and Garrett coming out of the eye.
- 1:06:53Burford is to the left, dropping straight back is Dawson.
- 1:06:57That's the ball, goal, has it, receivers a 30-yard line.
- 1:07:01Still on his feet and I believe Alvarez has been hitting the shoulder.
- 1:07:04It was free to pop the ball at the 30, but as he was hit and hit hard by Nitski,
- 1:07:09you can almost see him buckle and he is now walking off the field.
- 1:07:14He has had an injured shoulder.
- 1:07:16He had his shoulder separated in the American Football Championship game up in Buffalo two weeks ago.
- 1:07:22It was somewhat of a doubtful starter for this game, and apparently the shoulder has not healed up.
- 1:07:26Fully, because he undoubtedly re-injured the same shoulder on that play.
- 1:07:32That's a terrible feeling, too, to be injured in the middle of a play,
- 1:07:36not to be knocked down, to know that you have re-separated your shoulder
- 1:07:39and somebody is going to have to come hit you again.
- 1:07:42A pick up of 12 at his third down and six with the ball on the 35 of Kansas City,
- 1:07:4714-7 Green Bay leading, closing minutes of the first half.
- 1:07:53Dawson drops back on third down and hands his man Taylor.
- 1:07:57Taylor has got the first down across the 40, up to the 42-yard line.
- 1:08:02And Otis Taylor was a fine second-year flanker, 6-2, 2-11 from Corey Dew,
- 1:08:08is showing many people what a good flanker he really is.
- 1:08:13He's coming to his home this year, first down at the 41.
- 1:08:16Otis has all the requisites of a great flanker back,
- 1:08:20and he has good news, but tremendous speed, catches the ball well,
- 1:08:24and catches it in a crowd.
- 1:08:26He doesn't hesitate to go up to the ball when there are a couple of defenders around him,
- 1:08:29and on top of that, likes to block, likes to come back on these end runs
- 1:08:32and help in the blocking.
- 1:08:34Two minutes and 20 seconds to go.
- 1:08:36Dawson takes the handoff.
- 1:08:38Back, looking, has Taylor again.
- 1:08:41Taylor to the 40-yard line.
- 1:08:44The flag is down, and let's see what it is.
- 1:08:47They could be charged against Green Bay anyway,
- 1:08:50and so I'm sure they will take the play.
- 1:08:52Defensive interference into the ball, and Taylor has again moved Kansas City downfield.
- 1:08:58Make that push, Goldford.
- 1:09:00I beg your pardon.
- 1:09:01Number 88, not number 89.
- 1:09:05Down brown, made the tackle.
- 1:09:12Goldford, then, George was actually held up at the 40-yard line, prepared to catch at the 35
- 1:09:17and back down to the 32.
- 1:09:19He's another good competitor, as we said about Taylor a moment ago.
- 1:09:23Goldford is also the kind of guy that can catch the ball in the crowd.
- 1:09:26He's not afraid to go up for it.
- 1:09:28There's a lot of defenders all around him.
- 1:09:30Taylor wide right, Goldford wide to the left, on first down from a 32.
- 1:09:34Garrett has the handoff and is down to about the 30, and look out, Mike.
- 1:09:40In the 75-9, Nitski led the charge of green-shirted tackers that swarmed all over him
- 1:09:46after a game of perhaps two yards.
- 1:09:49Now, time becomes very important.
- 1:09:52A two-minute signal is being given on the field, two minutes and a half,
- 1:09:56and Kansas City trying to get on the board one more time as the ball at the 30.
- 1:10:03Fourteen to seven, the tackers lead in this, the American Football League
- 1:10:06National Football League Championship.
- 1:10:09They're just keeping their ball.
- 1:10:11And at this moment, many of the bands that will be performing here at halftime
- 1:10:15are walking down the track that surrounds the Los Angeles Coliseum football field
- 1:10:20and will be entertaining at halftime.
- 1:10:22And I'll remind you again that Lansin-O'Wilkins and Al Merton
- 1:10:25will be with your crowd of them here in the group.
- 1:10:30Kansas City now over to out, sending Taylor to the right.
- 1:10:33They've got the ball on the 31-yard line.
- 1:10:36They're throwing four to the seven in the final two minutes.
- 1:10:39Norford to the left.
- 1:10:41Dawson calling signals.
- 1:10:43McClinton and Garrett in the backfield.
- 1:10:46And on the line, quickly picked up,
- 1:10:49Curtis McClinton picked up his own fumble as Henry Jordan hit it,
- 1:10:54but actually McClinton fumbled before he got it.
- 1:10:57A loss on the play of perhaps a yard.
- 1:11:01Second down and 11.
- 1:11:04And I believe that is the first fumble in the ballgame, is it not,
- 1:11:07which is somewhat unusual for a ballgame with all of this importance attached to it,
- 1:11:12all of the tension that the ball players are bound to suffer.
- 1:11:15It's a bit surprising there have not been more fumbles thus far.
- 1:11:18A minute and 35.
- 1:11:20Dawson rocks back a little foot past to Mike Garrett.
- 1:11:23He's stepping around to 20.
- 1:11:25Gets through Bockels and inside to 25 yard line now, Jordan.
- 1:11:28Down to the 23.
- 1:11:30And near the first down.
- 1:11:32And he's going to the essence and checking.
- 1:11:35And the city has a couple of turnouts left.
- 1:11:39And therefore can stop the clock if they wish.
- 1:11:44Mike Moser is coming in.
- 1:11:47And on point down and the yard, they're going to stop the clock and go for the three.
- 1:11:52Rather than trying to go against that tough Green Bay defense
- 1:11:55and he's failing at any point at all.
- 1:11:58He's beat Dawson promptly walked over to the referee and called for a timeout.
- 1:12:03I don't know where Lenny is going to go over and discuss this with Sam as head coach
- 1:12:07to decide whether they should go for the field goal.
- 1:12:09Perhaps Lenny has some other ideas here.
- 1:12:12Now it appears that Lenny is staying out in the middle of the field.
- 1:12:14I thought for a moment perhaps that he would go over and try to argue the point with Sam
- 1:12:19and say they should go for the first down.
- 1:12:22But apparently not because Moser is staying in the ballgame.
- 1:12:24So undoubtedly they will try for the field goal here.
- 1:12:28They have 55 seconds to go on this, the first out.
- 1:12:30Green Bay out in front.
- 1:12:31And of course the clock is about a touchdown called back.
- 1:12:34But Mike Moser attempted a 40-yard field goal attempt a little while ago,
- 1:12:38which was far enough but just slightly off to the left.
- 1:12:42So each team has had scoring opportunities other than what's shown on the scoreboard that is 14 to 7.
- 1:12:50Now a short-sleeved crowd here in Los Angeles, California.
- 1:12:55And I hope that wherever you are the weather is good.
- 1:12:58And if not, I hope you're enjoying this broadcast.
- 1:13:02For those of you in your cars of course remember the game is important but so is your driving.
- 1:13:07Keep your mind on what you're doing.
- 1:13:08The ball will be spotted by Dawson at the 31-yard line.
- 1:13:12Mike versus 9 yards closer to what he was before.
- 1:13:15Little or no angle.
- 1:13:18Ball is snapped, hooked down, Moser kicks and this one is good.
- 1:13:26Another 31-yard field goal.
- 1:13:28Kansas City crossed within four points.
- 1:13:31Green Bay is hot and hot now by the score of 14 to 10.
- 1:13:35And George Wademan, they should judge which is the better team or as many try to do, which is the better league.
- 1:13:42I doubt that they could do it on the basis of this first half performance.
- 1:13:46It's been a close ball game.
- 1:13:48I think Kansas City showed signs of some nervousness in the early stages of the ball game.
- 1:13:53A bit more perhaps than Green Bay who seemed quite calm throughout.
- 1:13:57Possibly this will help Kansas City in the second half now that they have overcome their nervousness.
- 1:14:02But certainly it has been an even ball game.
- 1:14:04Kansas City is showing a lot of offense here today.
- 1:14:07Of course they're known for their diversified attack.
- 1:14:10Green Bay has stuck to the bread and butter type of offensive game for which they're known.
- 1:14:16I think it's a question whether Kansas City can score enough on Green Bay to match the points that Green Bay is going to put on the scoreboard.
- 1:14:25Having the stronger defensive team I think on Green Bay, perhaps Kansas City would have the stronger offensive team so far.
- 1:14:32Let's expect we'll kick off to Donnie Anderson and Bob Adderley and this is a short kick. He's going to hit the 22 picked up now by Adderley.
- 1:14:43And Adderley gets out to near the 25 yard line.
- 1:14:46He's not down there. About 50 seconds to go on the first half.
- 1:14:50Now the first 50 seconds to the likes of any good professional football team is plenty of time.
- 1:14:57Smokey Snowber made the stop about Adderley at halftime. A reminder again, Lance Alwood from the San Diego Chargers, Don Merritt from the Dallas Cowboys will be discussing this football game.
- 1:15:08I'm sure George that Lance will be saying a lot of good things about the American football league and Don Merritt will be saying a lot of good things about the national football league.
- 1:15:17You mentioned before I don't think we've resolved much in this first half so far. I'm sure we haven't.
- 1:15:21Pitts and Taylor still to setbacks. Paul Horning is not made in appearance in this ballgame.
- 1:15:27This is Elijah Pitts coming to the right side and he gets a good block and comes out near the 30 yard line.
- 1:15:35Bill Curry leading the way. Bobby Bell the left side linebacker came up to make the stop and Chuck Buchanan the left with the right tackle.
- 1:15:44The ball is across the 30, placed down on the 33, the second down on three. Brock continues to run showing nine seconds to go in this first half.
- 1:15:54And the Packers are now showing any tendency to hustle out of that huddle and get up to the line of scrimmage.
- 1:16:00The Chiefs have already started to walk off the field and there is the goal.
- 1:16:05That's the end of the first half and the score Green Bay 14 Kansas City 10.
- 1:16:14Half time here at the Los Angeles Coliseum in this 14 to 10 ballgame and the Green Bay Packers out in front of them.
- 1:16:20The Bands come out on the field and in a few moments we'll have our first guest.
- 1:16:23And now let us recap what happened in the first quarter with six minutes and four seconds to go.
- 1:16:29A 37 yard pass play from Bart Starr to Max McGee with McGee making the fine catch.
- 1:16:35Ripping out of the grass, well, Cheryl Hedrick and going all the way to score.
- 1:16:39In the second quarter with 10 minutes and 41 seconds to go.
- 1:16:42With all this Taylor setting things up for the fine reception and Mike Yerkes good running, taking him down to the seven.
- 1:16:49Chris McClinton found himself loose in the right part of the end zone and down there, Lenny Dawson hitting for the seven yard touchdown pass to make it 7-7.
- 1:17:00And then Bart Starr after a pass to Carol Dale was called back on third down and short yardage.
- 1:17:06Garrett is team on the 73 yard pass, catch by a 14 yard run by Jim J. with four minutes and 35 seconds to go to make it 14 to 7.
- 1:17:15And then in the closing moments, Chris Burford also made a great catch and pulled the Chiefs to within field goal range.
- 1:17:22The Green Bay Tigers and Mike Burser, unsuccessful in his first attempt, kicked the 31 yarder.
- 1:17:28That's how it ended 14 to 10. Now for halftime, let's go to George Roderick.
- 1:17:33Thank you, Jim. And seated on my right is one of the great quarterbacks in professional football these days, Don Meredith of the Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:17:41We certainly had his greatest year this year, didn't you, Don?
- 1:17:45Well, I think so, George. By far it was the best year of the Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:17:48His fall off was a reflection of the quarterback's ability or his success or at least whatever training I received and what his team does.
- 1:17:56We had a very good team effort in Dallas this year and I'm very happy to be a part of it.
- 1:18:00Don, you came so, so close to tying up that ball game against Green Bay two weeks ago down in Dallas.
- 1:18:06I read a statement by your coach, Tom Landry, that had you been able to score, get into the end zone and tie that ball game up,
- 1:18:14you had the momentum going for you and you very possibly would have had an advantage going into an overtime.
- 1:18:20How do you feel about that?
- 1:18:21Well, it's very easy for us to say this. You can't imagine how I feel watching this ball game today because we felt like we had an excellent opportunity to beat Green Bay and we didn't do it.
- 1:18:31We respect Green Bay and we think they're a very fun football team.
- 1:18:34And I came in Dallas, we did have some momentum. Our offense I don't think ever looked as good as it did against Green Bay.
- 1:18:42We executed probably as well as we possibly can and we thought that we could have gotten into an overtime and we could have won.
- 1:18:49However, I must say this, I think it could have been decided on the flip of the coin in which ball club we'd receive.
- 1:18:57I think this is the way that a sudden death would be decided and I think if we could have gotten the ball, I'm pretty sure we could have scored.
- 1:19:03That's right. It was a great offensive display so probably whoever got the ball first in the overtime would have had a tremendous advantage in that football game.
- 1:19:11Don, I have heard so much, personally, I've been broadcasting American Football League games and haven't had much opportunity in recent years to watch the NFL games,
- 1:19:20but I've heard so much about the fine offensive blocking at the Green Bay line and yet in the early stages of this game, Kansas City was getting through the Bart Starr a few times.
- 1:19:29Is that happening frequently in the NFL or did that surprise you the best?
- 1:19:33I was surprised to see that too. I am more or less like you only on the other side of the fence.
- 1:19:39And reading statistics, I understand that Kansas City's current one actually hasn't been trapped in the pass for this year.
- 1:19:45I'm not mistaken, I believe they trapped them like 29 times whereas...
- 1:19:49Two and two.
- 1:19:50Well, not really because Green Bay's brought four and they very seldom blitz.
- 1:19:54I think they ranked third in the National Football League with something like 49 traps and this is a real plus for a team to have.
- 1:20:01So I was surprised to see this. I'm very impressed with Kansas City's entire ball club, both offensively and defensively.
- 1:20:09I've been trying to figure out their defense from the spectators' standpoint today and they use what we call an ownership.
- 1:20:18The lead part of this drawing side, we call it a round and a frisco. Are you talking about the defense of the ball?
- 1:20:24I'm talking about the defensive line. It's an odd man line, basically an odd man line.
- 1:20:28And Green Bay has been very drawn at handling this all year and I was very surprised to see the success that they did now.
- 1:20:37They're very far in the ball game.
- 1:20:39I'm hoping for a moment at the Kansas City offense. I think Lennie Dalton has done a fine job in his play action as is in the first half.
- 1:20:48The touchdown they scored, I think he had Green Bay completely grappled because, as you know, you never want to have two receivers standing together.
- 1:20:55But he actually had the Redmond Rovers standing together down the end zone to have thrown the ball to either one.
- 1:21:01Is he about the best you've seen as far as faking before going back to pass?
- 1:21:06Very good job, Lennie. I've been very impressed with his play calling, actually.
- 1:21:10I think he has actually, more or less, varied his offense enough that he's kept Green Bay off.
- 1:21:18When I look at Kansas City's offense, it does remind me somewhat of ours because we do a shift around like this in different formations.
- 1:21:26And I can almost hear Nisky calling out the different formations, but only in our terminology when these guys do shifts.
- 1:21:32I think it does create a burden on him, and I think Lennie has done a very fine job with his play calling and his ball.
- 1:21:38I think he's been excellent and he's been on target most of all day.
- 1:21:41Thank you, Don. I'm glad to be back with you. We'll be back with Rick Lantz and Don in just a minute.
- 1:21:47You're listening to the NBC Radio's coverage of the first AFL-NFL championship game.
- 1:21:54This is George Roderman with Jim Sunstein at the Super Bowl in Los Angeles, Coliseum.
- 1:22:02We're at halftime. The score is the Green Bay Packers 14 to Kansas City Chiefs 10.
- 1:22:07Our halftime guests are Lance Alworth, the fine flanker back of the San Diego Chargers,
- 1:22:12and Don Meridick, the great quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:22:17Lance, let me ask you a question here. What has been said about teams having an advantage going into a game mentally.
- 1:22:24Who do you think have the psychological advantage going into this game?
- 1:22:29Undoubtedly, Green Bay was the favorite. They know that they're a good Kansas City Browns.
- 1:22:34They didn't know quite what to expect, but they had been topped down for a number of years.
- 1:22:38Who do you think have the psychological advantage going in?
- 1:22:41Well, actually, I think I would have to say, because Green Bay, when they went into the ballgame,
- 1:22:48they were playing a lot of big ballgames, and they're the big teams, so they can go in.
- 1:22:53They're not too nervous, but I tell you, just sitting in the stands up here, I was really nervous.
- 1:22:58Because I was worried about how they were going to do, I felt like Kansas City is a great football team,
- 1:23:03but you never know. Kansas City, I feel like for the first quarter,
- 1:23:08they really didn't know what to expect. They were really high on the post-match end of the ballgame,
- 1:23:12because we're trying to freeze them. Come on, I think they're doing a fine job,
- 1:23:16and it's going to be a big game. I think it's amazing that there was only one cumber in the first half,
- 1:23:21considering the tightness that Mr. Brooks on the game saw, sorry for throwing the ball, we didn't touch it.
- 1:23:26Well, and I'll tell you, that was forced by a real good quality of the ball.
- 1:23:29He was hit before he got the ball, I see, and he was hit the ball tucked away.
- 1:23:32Now, Meredith, let me ask you this. Your mental attitude changed much from game to game.
- 1:23:37Now, can you feel a lot more pressure? For instance, two weeks ago, when you went into the championship game against Green Bay,
- 1:23:43did you feel mentally a lot more pressure before that game than before they went into their season, do you?
- 1:23:48I think the most pressure we had at Dallas was making the game against Cleveland.
- 1:23:54We had to win this ballgame in Dallas to still out the Eastern Division.
- 1:23:58And gaining Dallas for seven years, we'd never won. So our first objective was to win the East.
- 1:24:04And it was a big, built-up game, and there was a tremendous sellout there in Dallas,
- 1:24:10and Dallas is really calling fire. And I think there's a lot of pressure and a lot of enthusiasm.
- 1:24:14It's creates pressure, more so in the play-standing game than in the championship game, because we played game there before,
- 1:24:20and we felt like we had the time well thought that could be very effective against them.
- 1:24:25We were all ready to play if we played in the championship game.
- 1:24:28Don, let me ask you, Green Bay has had a reputation for years, and you've played against them for quite a few years now,
- 1:24:34but they've had a reputation having a great defensive ball front.
- 1:24:37What's the biggest problem that you have as a quarterback, calling a play-standing offense against Green Bay?
- 1:24:43What are their strong points, what are their weak points, still coming?
- 1:24:46Well, they have very few weak points, but I think our biggest problem is this, that Green Bay will not change.
- 1:24:52They're going to be basically the same day, week in and week out.
- 1:24:55It's more or less saying, all right, this is where we're going to be against this formation there.
- 1:25:00If you can beat us, come home, because we're going to be right here.
- 1:25:03And they're well coordinated, they execute almost without fraud.
- 1:25:16The second half is about to begin. This is Jim Simpson with George Raderman.
- 1:25:19And George, one-half of it does not a football game make, but the statistics,
- 1:25:25despite the Packers 14-10 lead, are somewhat surprising.
- 1:25:29A bit surprising in that the Chiefs show a slight edge in most of the different categories of these statistics.
- 1:25:36In first downs, the Kansas City Chiefs have 11, the Green Bay Packers 9.
- 1:25:42Total yards gained, the Chiefs again are a bit ahead of the Packers,
- 1:25:46181 yards for the Chiefs, 164 for the Packers, breaking that down into rushing and passing.
- 1:25:54The Packers have a bit of an edge in the rushing yardage, 51 to 37.
- 1:26:00However, the Kansas City Chiefs are ahead in passing yardage, 144 yards for the Chiefs,
- 1:26:06113 for the Packers, so the statistics aren't too far apart,
- 1:26:11but the Chiefs do have perhaps a slight edge.
- 1:26:14And the number of passes thrown and completed, the Packers,
- 1:26:18Bart Starr has completed 8 out of 13 passes,
- 1:26:22Lenny Dawson for the Kansas City Chiefs has completed 11 out of 15.
- 1:26:27So both quarterbacks, both teams have shown an ability to complete passes against the other,
- 1:26:32and this could well be the tale of the second half here.
- 1:26:36Who is going to score the most points because it is not a defensive battle?
- 1:26:40Don Chandler kicks off, Gene Wilson comes up, watches it bounce at the 12,
- 1:26:44but the flag has gone down and a whistle has sounded, again back upfield.
- 1:26:53And they will kick it again.
- 1:26:57The ball did not go out of bounds.
- 1:27:01The Packers are coming back upfield, 14 to 10 to score.
- 1:27:05The Packers lead one half left of this Super Bowl.
- 1:27:08Don Chandler will tee the ball up again at the 40-yard line.
- 1:27:16George, it comes under the question of your guess is as good as mine.
- 1:27:20It was the one happened on the last play, a very odd play.
- 1:27:22Green Bay kicked off, a lot of the Kansas City people didn't move,
- 1:27:25just stood there pointing at something, and I don't know what they were pointing at.
- 1:27:29This was a very high and very short kick.
- 1:27:31Bert Cohn comes up to the 13th, straight upfield across the 20,
- 1:27:35now going to his right side and is knocked down very quickly as he hits to the right side
- 1:27:40by number 27, red back, a flanked back, former Notre Dame All-American.
- 1:27:46Now they change the footballs again, as we have told you before,
- 1:27:49the American football team using its own football on offense,
- 1:27:53and the same with the Packers, its football while on defense.
- 1:27:57They are slightly different.
- 1:27:59The Packers have a slightly counterball, as George said.
- 1:28:04The back of the cover comes up wide left, Otis Taylor goes to the right in an high formation.
- 1:28:08Now shifting out of it, Garrett and McClinton are the setbacks.
- 1:28:12The Packers have a lot of men butched along the forward wall.
- 1:28:15Dawson rolled into his right nice running,
- 1:28:17rolled across the 30, across the 35, and sticks on the downs as he hits to the 43-yard line.
- 1:28:22The Packer defense collapsed downfield, and George, only Otis Taylor was downfield,
- 1:28:28and there were four Packer defensive men back there,
- 1:28:31who were turned around running full speed with Otis Taylor.
- 1:28:34Of course they realize he is a long thread, he has great speed,
- 1:28:37but as you say, the defensive secondary of the Packers, almost all of them,
- 1:28:41were turned around running back downfield with Otis Taylor,
- 1:28:44so when Lenny Dawson started to run there, they didn't even know it for a while
- 1:28:48until he had gained some 5 or 10 yards.
- 1:28:51Austin's end on the 44 Kansas City, they trail 14 to 10,
- 1:28:55opening moments of the second half of the Super Bowl.
- 1:28:58Taylor is to the left, Burford flanked to the left.
- 1:29:01Dawson calling signals, again a six-man line, and McClennan goes straight ahead
- 1:29:06and gets from his own 43 down to about the 48 yard line.
- 1:29:11A quick up the five over Ron Castellna.
- 1:29:14The left tackle from 690, number 77, makes the tackle the second and five.
- 1:29:23A reminder, there were several injuries early in the game.
- 1:29:25Boyd Dowler, the blanketback, was injured in the first quarter
- 1:29:28with Green Bay on the left, and we understand he's out for the game.
- 1:29:31Chuck Hurston, defensive right end, while Kansas City was injured, but he has come back.
- 1:29:36Taylor goes wide to the right.
- 1:29:39Now Arbanus is back in. He re-injured his shoulder, but is back in.
- 1:29:43Garrett is set in the slot to the right, but it is straight ahead.
- 1:29:48That is Garrett straight ahead. It was McClennan in the slot back, I'm sorry.
- 1:29:52And Ron Larkin made the tackle just a couple yards out to midfield,
- 1:29:58and they are still about four yards from first out, Taylor.
- 1:30:03Got a kick out of Arbanus' remark after he was injured in the championship game
- 1:30:07up in Buffalo two weeks ago. He had a separated shoulder,
- 1:30:10and when asked whether he would play in the Super Bowl, he said to show his determination,
- 1:30:14he said, I'll play even if Lamar Hunt, who is the owner of Kansas City,
- 1:30:18even if Lamar Hunt has to buy me a new shoulder.
- 1:30:22I don't know how much shoulders cost these days.
- 1:30:24Dabber to the right, broker to the left, big play for Kansas City and Green Bay,
- 1:30:28third down and a long four.
- 1:30:30Dawson being rushed on goal.
- 1:30:33And down the sidelines comes Willie Wood.
- 1:30:37Only one man can get in at the down and drags him down with the four yard line, a big break.
- 1:30:44Mike Carrot finally came from behind to get Willie Wood at the four yard line.
- 1:30:49And at the defensive prowess of Green Bay, never more evident there,
- 1:30:54Dawson was pressured, grew out to the left and hung the ball up at Woodcutt in front of the receiver
- 1:31:00and carried the ball from midfield down to the goal.
- 1:31:03And one of the few times when we will see either one of these quarterbacks,
- 1:31:08Lenny Dawson or Bart Starr, do that, that is,
- 1:31:10for the ball when they're under pressure when the receiver is not definitely open,
- 1:31:15something a quarterback shouldn't do.
- 1:31:17Lenny made a mistake and I'm sure he knows it.
- 1:31:19The officials forgot to change the football.
- 1:31:22Green Bay is back on offense and so now the national football ball comes in play.
- 1:31:27The ball warning is not yet made in appearance.
- 1:31:30The larger pits and Jim Taylor, the setbacks with Dana wide to the left, that is,
- 1:31:36a touchdown on the first play going off his own left side.
- 1:31:41And Green Bay races on in front by the score of 20 to 10.
- 1:31:45That's their biggest leading margin.
- 1:31:48Cheryl Henrich was taken off by one of those good offensive guards of Green Bay,
- 1:31:53Buzzy Thurston, who led the way.
- 1:32:01The Packers have exploded here, taking the offense of the Kansas City Chiefs
- 1:32:06to turn it into a touchdown for the Green Bay Packers.
- 1:32:09Don Chandler is in to try the extra point.
- 1:32:14Fires holding and the kick is good.
- 1:32:19Next time on the field is the score now, Green Bay 21, Kansas City 10.
- 1:32:28Twelve minutes and 33 seconds to go in the third quarter.
- 1:32:31Green Bay now leading 21 to 10.
- 1:32:33Gene Wilson and Burt Cohn are deep and Don Chandler will kick off for the Packers.
- 1:32:39All is in the air.
- 1:32:42Cohn in the end zone.
- 1:32:44He'll bring it out across the field, straight upfield, the 10, the 15,
- 1:32:47a lot of speed, puts his head down and goes out near the 30 yard line.
- 1:32:50And Cohn very nearly broke through everyone.
- 1:32:54The 10 momentum carried into the turf at the 30 yard line as he ducked
- 1:32:58and went under the arms of the Green Bay Tacklers.
- 1:33:01And now George Rodman, the question becomes, can Kansas City come back?
- 1:33:07Well, the pressure is on them right now.
- 1:33:09They were down by four points at halftime, received the second half kickoff,
- 1:33:13appeared to be marching down the field so that they would have a good chance
- 1:33:17to go ahead in this ballgame.
- 1:33:19And all of a sudden, Lenny Dawson did something that he very, very rarely does
- 1:33:23but he's hung a pass out there and had it intercepted.
- 1:33:26First down, Taylor Wright.
- 1:33:28Dawson moving, looking for Taylor and under throws him at the 39 yard line.
- 1:33:33Burt Cohn is in and replacement for Mike Garrett as the others set back
- 1:33:38along with Curtis McClinton.
- 1:33:40It'll be second and 10.
- 1:33:43And of course, Lenny Dawson hung his last pass up there.
- 1:33:46It was disastrous as Willie Wood intercepted and carried to the four and Fitz scored.
- 1:33:51This time, Len under threw the ball.
- 1:33:55Ball is right at the 30 yard line, second down 10, 21 to 10, Packers lead third quarter.
- 1:34:03Now, this Taylor again goes wide right, Fisberger comes to the left,
- 1:34:06our formation, McClinton the full back and now Cohn jumps to the left.
- 1:34:13Dawson dropping straight back, looking.
- 1:34:15Taylor at the 40 yard line and he's brought down in a hurry.
- 1:34:20Dawson recovers his own fumble at the 41 yard line and I want to tell you that
- 1:34:24Herb Adley, the left cornerback of Michigan State, and Otis Taylor
- 1:34:28right around the net, closed line.
- 1:34:31Taylor fumbled but very quickly bounced on the ball.
- 1:34:37It's a first down at the 42 yard line, a gain of 12 on the play.
- 1:34:41And Otis Taylor has shown that he is quite a flier in either lead.
- 1:34:45And a couple of great catches today and shows fine speed.
- 1:34:48Taylor, about us to repeat, is in.
- 1:34:51And as he views so many times, Otis Taylor comes out to the left split,
- 1:34:55but Burford is flanked to the left.
- 1:35:01Taylor hands straight out ahead to Cohn as McClinton,
- 1:35:04who gets out near the 45 yard line before Lionel Aldridge makes the tackle.
- 1:35:10Jim Tyra, the left tackle leading the way, Tyra a secure better from Ohio State,
- 1:35:15and a 2.92. That is put down on the 45 yard line.
- 1:35:19It will be a second down and 6 a gain of 4 from McClinton.
- 1:35:24And those here in the Los Angeles Coliseum, and I'm sure wherever you're listening,
- 1:35:30are watching and waiting to see if the Kansas City Chiefs can maintain their poise.
- 1:35:36They trail by 11. Burford to the left, Taylor flanked to the right.
- 1:35:40The Chiefs try to come back after that interception by Wood.
- 1:35:43Dawson takes the handoff and throws out, has his man, and down he goes at the 50 yard line.
- 1:35:49Willie Wood made the stop.
- 1:35:53And getting up is Burt Cohn. He's in replacement, as we said, for Mike Garrett,
- 1:35:58and he takes the ball to the 50 yard line. Cohn is big himself, 6'4, 220.
- 1:36:04And that's a helpful thing for a passer who's throwing to a receiver to have a man who stands that tall 6'4,
- 1:36:10he just makes that bigger a target to throw to.
- 1:36:14Both sides are showing remarkable ability to hang on to the football,
- 1:36:18to catch the balls they're juggling even after they're hit.
- 1:36:20Cohn was juggling that ball when he was hit, but managed to hold on to it.
- 1:36:23Third down 1, Cohn is flying his feet with his score.
- 1:36:27Trying to come to his left side on third and short garbage.
- 1:36:31The Chiefs try to go wide, and Burt Cohn could not turn the corner,
- 1:36:35coming up with Bob Jeter along with the linebackers, Ray Nitsky and Leroy Caffey.
- 1:36:39And that means it's fourth down. Instead of a first down, the Chiefs are forced into a punting situation.
- 1:36:44Darrell Wilson is coming on.
- 1:36:46Willie Wood and Donnie Anderson go deep for the Green Bay Packers.
- 1:36:5021 to 10, Green Bay leads third quarter.
- 1:36:54About 9 1⁄2 minutes to go. Wilson is standing on his own 30 yard line.
- 1:37:01The score at halftime was 14-10, Green Bay, but the Packers quickly added another on the interception of Ward
- 1:37:06and a four yard run by Pitts. Wilson gets a high kick away,
- 1:37:12bounds down at the 20 and hops back toward Kansas City territory,
- 1:37:16near the 25 yard line. It is down there. It will be first and 10 for the Packers.
- 1:37:22All is down by Al Reynolds, an offensive guard.
- 1:37:27Packers offensive unit comes back on the field, and for the moment the Packers have things their own way.
- 1:37:34They've got the football, they've got the lead. Third quarter.
- 1:37:39The crowd here rather quiet at the moment, and it is a large crowd at the Coliseum.
- 1:37:44Carol Dale comes out wide to the right. Ward Deller, to repeat, is not playing.
- 1:37:49And again, Pitts and Taylor are the setbacks.
- 1:37:57This is Elijah Pitts coming across his own right side and gets out across the 35 yard line,
- 1:38:02still on his feet, to the 37.
- 1:38:04Tony Williamson came over to make this tackle as Pitts broke a couple of tackles himself.
- 1:38:09Donnie Robinson also helped out.
- 1:38:14And now, Cheryl Hedrick, the middle linebacker of Kansas City,
- 1:38:22limps off, holding his right ankle.
- 1:38:25And Smokey Silver of northeast Louisiana, 6 feet tall, 227,
- 1:38:30coming up the all-important middle linebacker spot.
- 1:38:33It's a first down at the 37.
- 1:38:36Star dropping straight back.
- 1:38:38Looking half-time, and now smothered under the 29 yard line.
- 1:38:42Mark Star took one pump, and then when he raised his arm back again, the pocket closed, and down he went.
- 1:38:50E.J. Hollid, glitzing on the play, along with the right tackle, Buck Buchanan made the tackle.
- 1:38:57Second down, and 17.
- 1:39:00And as Don Meredith, the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, mentioned that,
- 1:39:04half-time, it's a bit surprising, particularly to national football league fans who have watched the Packers front a bit
- 1:39:10and know they have great blockers.
- 1:39:12It's a bit surprising to see this tremendous pressure that the Kansas City defensive linemen
- 1:39:16have been able to put on Bart Star this afternoon.
- 1:39:20Max McGee goes out to the left.
- 1:39:22Ward Dower comes to the right.
- 1:39:24Star Fleming, the tight end, is split about five yards on the right side.
- 1:39:30Pitts runs out and jumps in the slot to the left.
- 1:39:33Taylor, the lone setback, star dropping straight back on second down, long yardage.
- 1:39:37Looking for his man, and out of bounds he goes.
- 1:39:40He's got him.
- 1:39:41William Mitchell.
- 1:39:43And Max McGee out of bounds after McGee made the tackle.
- 1:39:48Not enough for the first down.
- 1:39:50Inside the 45, we'll bring up a big third down and a long two yards.
- 1:39:58As George Benjamin put, they have been operating on Willie Mitchell, the right cornerback, this afternoon,
- 1:40:04a third-year veteran from Tennessee State.
- 1:40:08Now time is gone on the field in this 21-10 ballgame.
- 1:40:12Carol Hedrick has come back in.
- 1:40:14The game over has gone out. There's time out on the field with a score, Green Bay 21, Kansas City 10.
- 1:40:24Back of the Coliseum in Los Angeles, the Packers have the ball on their own 44-yard line.
- 1:40:29It is third down and two.
- 1:40:31And this is Jim Simpson with George Radaman.
- 1:40:33In this 21-10 ballgame, the Packers are leading.
- 1:40:38The Chiefs, of course, hoping to stop them on this particular play in order to have them be forced to kick it away.
- 1:40:44Carol Dale comes wide to the right.
- 1:40:48McGee is on the left side.
- 1:40:51Star calling signals. Star hands to Taylor.
- 1:40:54Taylor hit from behind and gets to the 45 and dives ahead and may or may not have gotten that first down.
- 1:41:02It will be close.
- 1:41:03And about the 46-yard line, and Cheryl Hedrick, the man who was injured with the right ankle,
- 1:41:08came back in and is the man who made the tackle there.
- 1:41:12It's interesting to note the respect both of these quarterbacks have for the defensive Lions against whom they're playing
- 1:41:18because both of them now, having third down in short-yardage situations, have elected to go wide.
- 1:41:25Dawson did not make it a moment ago with Kansas City.
- 1:41:28They were stopped short of the first down, and it would appear that Green Bay has been stopped short of the first down.
- 1:41:32Here, both of them elected to go wide instead of going straight ahead into the defensive line trying to pick up the first down.
- 1:41:41And rather than the possibility, of course, George, of giving a big field position,
- 1:41:45Vinson and Bobby Sands are just kicking at it.
- 1:41:49Don Chadler and Thomas Gozdieck.
- 1:41:59Mike Garrett with a single action as a running back here in the second half is back in and is deep.
- 1:42:05Chadler will kick for Rajon 37.
- 1:42:08No driving.
- 1:42:09Kick.
- 1:42:10Garrett at the 19-20 day light.
- 1:42:13And he has hit down by Leroy Caffey as he crosses the 25- to 27-yard line.
- 1:42:18It'll be first and 10 there for the Kansas City Chiefs training in the ballgame.
- 1:42:25It'll cost 10 seconds for station identification.
- 1:42:31WGY Schenectady, a General Electric Broadcasting Company station.
- 1:42:43Seven minutes and five seconds to go in the third quarter.
- 1:42:46Packers leading 21-10.
- 1:42:48Money Dawson rolling out to his left, looking downfield, throwing downfield, and Oliver throws his man, Chris Burford, at the 42-yard line.
- 1:42:58Dawson actually had time and Burford was a couple of steps in front of the defender, Bob Jeter, but the ball was overthrown.
- 1:43:06Jim, it's interesting to note sometimes how teams will change their tactics in the second half of a football game.
- 1:43:12On the first half today, Green Bay did not blitz at all, as they did not send their linebackers in.
- 1:43:18Shoot to gap as they say, in against the passer, when he was passing, but already here in the second half, three times now,
- 1:43:26they had blitzed their linebackers and sent them in.
- 1:43:28So a definite change in tactics by the Green Bay Packers defensively here in the second half.
- 1:43:33Second down, 10.
- 1:43:35Garrett jumps in the slot to the right.
- 1:43:37It is Burford on the left, Otis Taylor on the right.
- 1:43:40Dawson takes the handoff and the linebackers are blitzing again.
- 1:43:45This time from the right side, Leroy Caffey, down at the 15-yard line, and is a flag back at the 23.
- 1:43:57They are calling back apparently the Green Bay defensive captain, and so it could be against the Chiefs.
- 1:44:0421 to 10, Green Bay leading official, Norm Shacklet comes over and says Holden is charged against Kansas City.
- 1:44:13It has been refused, as the ball is taken back inside the 15 and placed down on the 14-yard line.
- 1:44:19Shacklet down on the wall and yard, which makes that third down, which is the last to down, third down and 23.
- 1:44:28And here is a tough call for Lenny Dawson, third down and 23 trailing by 10 points in the ballgame.
- 1:44:35He has to go for the first down, has to try to do something here.
- 1:44:38Green Bay can afford to gamble there ahead.
- 1:44:40They have Kansas City backed up, a real tough play to call.
- 1:44:44Burford and Taylor both to left.
- 1:44:46Dawson rolls to the left in a pocket, off down at the 3-0-5.
- 1:44:50A tremendous pressure by the Green Bay Packers.
- 1:44:53And by Henry Jordan and Lenny Davis and Ron Kostelnik, the three of them were there.
- 1:44:58And now, the punting of Jero Wilson will get the Chiefs partially out of the hole,
- 1:45:04but will certainly give the Green Bay Packers wonderful field position,
- 1:45:08because Wilson will be nearly at the end of his own end zone when he kicks the ball.
- 1:45:15The line of scrimmage is the 27th. The ball is on the 2.
- 1:45:20Notice fourth down and 35.
- 1:45:25And Wilson almost has his back foot out of that end zone.
- 1:45:30Woody Wood and Donnie Anderson are deep.
- 1:45:35Kick. It is taken by Donnie Anderson.
- 1:45:39Anderson's flags go down as he's hit. More flags go down as he's hit at the 41-yard line.
- 1:45:50Anderson was hit by Aaron Brown, the number one draft choice from Minnesota, along with E.J. Halle.
- 1:45:57A couple of flags down.
- 1:45:59And apparently, as the Packers fade back downfield of their own 35,
- 1:46:07this will be against the Packers.
- 1:46:09And George Rederman, this is a good break for the Kansas City Chiefs, who trail by the score of 21-10.
- 1:46:15A break and again, something that you rarely see, a clipping penalty against the Green Bay Packers.
- 1:46:22And they're returning a punt. They're very careful about such things.
- 1:46:26And Vince Lombardi, their coach, has told them if there's ever any doubt whether you're in front of the man or behind him or to the side,
- 1:46:32don't throw the block because if there's anything we don't want, it's one of those 15-yard penalties.
- 1:46:38But one of the Packers has been caught here in clipping, so they've been penalized 15 yards back to their 44-yard line.
- 1:46:45From their 44, first and 10, 6 minutes, 18 seconds to go, third quarter.
- 1:46:50Lodge of Beech goes up to the left.
- 1:46:51And it's knocked down, I'm telling you, that time, the Green Bay defensive guards pulling were simply shoved aside.
- 1:47:01And the Kansas City defense led by Chuck Hursting and Andy Rice came in a knocking down for loss from the 44 back to the 42, second and 12.
- 1:47:12And a surprising play actually, Jim, because as you mentioned, it looked as if Elijah Foote's had a lot of interference out in front of him,
- 1:47:19a couple of guards in front of him, and all of a sudden they disappeared or weren't effective and Pitts went down.
- 1:47:25Very surprising.
- 1:47:26Carowdale comes wide to the right.
- 1:47:28Fleming is split to the right.
- 1:47:30McGee is on the left side.
- 1:47:31Pitts hit her again with setbacks.
- 1:47:34Clark's guard wrapping straight back to Tom across the center.
- 1:47:38And has backs McGee.
- 1:47:40Up in Kansas City territory, not the first down, but very close to it, the 48-yard line.
- 1:47:47Don Robinson made the stop and now he came up to another big third down play.
- 1:47:52The last time Kansas City was able to hold the Green Bay, Green Bay punted.
- 1:47:57Kansas City lost 25 yards in the series of downs and outkipped them its own end zone.
- 1:48:04Five minutes, 10 seconds to go, third quarter, 21 to 10, the Packers lead.
- 1:48:0914 and a half, Tom, Williwood's interception broke things open a little bit as the second half began.
- 1:48:15Carowdale to the right, McGee to the left.
- 1:48:21Jim Taylor has got the first down across the 45 going off his own left side of the line.
- 1:48:27Chuck Hurston made the tackle as Bob Skoronsky and Fred Thurston opened up some running room for him and the ball is put down on the 43.
- 1:48:36Thurston 10 for the Packers and they're on the move again.
- 1:48:38And this the first Super Bowl, the AFL NFL Championship of the Los Angeles Coliseum.
- 1:48:45Shallows beginning to creep in from the left side of the Coliseum now.
- 1:48:51Lots of time left as McGee goes to the left on first down.
- 1:48:55Dale comes to the right.
- 1:48:58Box star dropping way back, looking, falling and the receiver falls down.
- 1:49:04Carowdale fell down at the 27-yard line and Freddie Williamson backed off of Dale as though he had a hot poker in his hands.
- 1:49:12He didn't want any defensive interference play going there. There wasn't one.
- 1:49:17Williamson has actually given Dale a good jolt, but it was before the ball was in the air.
- 1:49:22And of course, Freddie wanted to get away from him in a hurry, having knocked him down so he would not be called for pass interference.
- 1:49:28But of course, you can bump these receivers coming downfield as long as the ball is not yet in the air.
- 1:49:33And that was the situation there. Williamson belting Dale when it appeared that Dale might be going by him,
- 1:49:40knocking him down, but this was before the ball was in the air, so no pass interference was called.
- 1:49:45Max McGee this time runs out to the right and Carowdale drops off to the left.
- 1:49:50It is second down, 10 from the 43.
- 1:49:54Star dropping straight back again. He has Taylor a little swing there at the 45-44.
- 1:49:59And it once breaks the tackle and is back down again on the 44.
- 1:50:04That's the case of Bobby Bell coming up to help out Jerry Mays. Mays was the first man to make contact.
- 1:50:10And then Bobby Bell, the left-side linebacker, came up.
- 1:50:14And the ball is put down now back on the 44-yard line.
- 1:50:18And so it's a loss on the play. It's third down, 11.
- 1:50:25Three minutes, 25 seconds to go in the third quarter.
- 1:50:29And there's timeout on the field with the score Green Bay, 21, Kansas City, 10.
- 1:50:37Green Bay has the ball on the 44-yard line of the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 1:50:42It is third down and 11. Big down for the practice as well as the Chiefs, as the Chiefs trail by 11 points, 21, 10.
- 1:50:51And as the shadows begin to come over the Coliseum, they have turned the lights on here.
- 1:50:56They're not needed at the present time. It possibly will be later on in the fourth quarter.
- 1:51:00But they've already turned the lights on here in the Coliseum.
- 1:51:03On third and 11, Carol Davis, right to the left.
- 1:51:06Willie Mitchell is the man on him.
- 1:51:08Dark star dropping straight back, looking as his man, Max McGee, in between three people at the 33-yard line.
- 1:51:17They all converse on the tackle, but McGee made the catch and it's a first down at the 28.
- 1:51:23Bobby Bell, Freddie Williamson, Baldi, along with Bobby Hunt.
- 1:51:31The defenders, the three of them, seemed to lay off McGee until he had the ball and then they closed the vice, but it was too late.
- 1:51:38Lloyd Darrow went up in the game early, has not been back, will not be back, and McGee has been called on for yawm and duty.
- 1:51:47There is Jim Taylor, right inside his line, and Taylor, as has been bound up today, isn't going anywhere.
- 1:51:54Now Buck Buchanan throws him down.
- 1:51:56Taylor says nothing.
- 1:51:58The official pisses off Buck Buchanan.
- 1:52:01No penalty is called as yet, and none will be.
- 1:52:08The defensive line of the Kansas City Chiefs has been tremendous today, as has the defensive line of the Green Bay Conference.
- 1:52:16The ball that they wanted to be won would be bound for the Kansas City Chiefs has been in the defensive second down.
- 1:52:22Here, of course, the big mistake of Willie Dawson when he hung the pass up and Willie wasn't intercepted.
- 1:52:28Second down and eight on the 26th.
- 1:52:33Terrell Dale to the left, Max McGee to the right.
- 1:52:37Scar with the same two setbacks.
- 1:52:40Gives it to Taylor, Taylor stuttering at the line, down and goes.
- 1:52:44Terrell Henrich made the tackle after crossing the 25 and down with the 21 yard line.
- 1:52:50Chuck Larson also went on the tackle.
- 1:52:54I would imagine Joe Droniman that Jim Taylor went back to the honeywack of that last little altercation with Buchanan and said, give me the ball again.
- 1:53:02I don't know whether it was even necessary for him to say that.
- 1:53:04Bart Starr might have just realized on his own that Jim Taylor is very angry now, and this is a good time to go follow the football and see what he'll do with it.
- 1:53:13Third down three. They are in perfect position for the field goal.
- 1:53:16So let's see what Scar does on third down and three.
- 1:53:20The flanker is Dale as Taylor goes wide to the left.
- 1:53:25Taylor gets a good block, clutches two tackles and has the first down across the 15.
- 1:53:30And there again as he's shown on his 14 yard touchdown run, the individual effort of Jim Taylor brought off that first down.
- 1:53:39Bobby Bell made the stop but the ball is placed down on the 13.
- 1:53:43The Packers leading by 11 now threatening to break it wide open here in the third quarter.
- 1:53:51With a little bit less than two minutes to go.
- 1:54:02Out of the huddle with McGee to the left.
- 1:54:04Dale to the right.
- 1:54:05First down from the 13.
- 1:54:07Starr fakes the handoff. Looks as Starr pulls in the end zone. Good kick by Mike McGee.
- 1:54:13Up one hand and it's a touchdown for the Green Bay Packers.
- 1:54:18And again the pass off of the playoff with Bart Starr first faking the running play to one of his running backs then stepping back and hitting McGee in the end zone.
- 1:54:27Two fine fakers these quarterbacks are not only great passers but both of these quarterbacks can handle the ball very well.
- 1:54:34They'll help their pass offense by faking the running plays frequently before going back to pass.
- 1:54:41Well Max McGee who played so well in the National Football Championship game coming on late has done so again.
- 1:54:46Chandler's in and kicked the extra point.
- 1:54:50And all Green Bay is far out in front with less than a minute to go in the third quarter.
- 1:54:58And that explosive Kansas City offense will now have to come to the fore if the Chiefs are to get back into this ball game.
- 1:55:06Another reminder about further NBC radio sports coverage.
- 1:55:10And that is the Bob Hope Desert Classic coming up on NBC Radio February the 4th and 5th.
- 1:55:17At the same time they will remind you that for all the sports coverage every weekend tune in to NBC's monitor.
- 1:55:24In the first quarter of this ball game Max McGee who just got that touchdown pass caught a 37 yarder from Bob Star.
- 1:55:30And the Packers went in front 7-0.
- 1:55:33The Chiefs tied it on a 7 yard pass from Dawson to McClendon in the second quarter.
- 1:55:39And then Jim Taylor broke 14 yards for a score to make it 14-7 Green Bay.
- 1:55:44At the end of the half just 58 seconds to go Mike Mercer kicked a 31 yard field goal and it ended 14-10.
- 1:55:52But then Willie Woods interception returned to the fore in the third quarter as the second half began.
- 1:55:57Pits scoring on the first play from 4 yards out made it 21-10.
- 1:56:01You just heard this march by the Packers capped by a 13 yard pass to Max McGee to make it 28-10.
- 1:56:08Now Don Chandler will kick off again.
- 1:56:13Dean Wilson and Burt Cohen are deep.
- 1:56:16Cohen watches it hit at the 12, takes it at the 2.
- 1:56:19Comes back up the left side to the 10, the 15 and down he goes.
- 1:56:23As he gets across the 15 knocked him out the 17.
- 1:56:27Knocked down there by Duggar and Jim Weatherack.
- 1:56:34Now Len Dawson running in will have to put the Chiefs on the scoreboard.
- 1:56:39The American Football League trying to prove to the National Football League and its fans that it has quite a football team and has quite a league.
- 1:56:48And the National Football League Green Bay Packers trying to prove that they are the better league.
- 1:56:52They'll emerge in a couple of years anyway.
- 1:56:54Taylor is to the right.
- 1:56:56First down from the 18.
- 1:56:58And off and straight ahead goes the goal by Curtis McCliff.
- 1:57:04Emory Jordan made the tackle and perhaps there's a yard gain on the play.
- 1:57:07It'll be second down and none.
- 1:57:10And the pressure continues to mount now on Lenny Dawson who is calling the signals on offense for the Kansas City Chiefs
- 1:57:16because he is definitely in a position now where he has to play catch-up football.
- 1:57:21This means he has to eliminate the more conservative part of his offense I might say.
- 1:57:26And Green Bay knows this so he is handicapped a bit at this point.
- 1:57:30Well George that's the end of the third point.
- 1:57:32The score now Green Bay 28 Kansas City 10.
- 1:57:3918 points separate the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 1:57:43They've had the ball. Second down nine.
- 1:57:47The ball on their own 19 yard line.
- 1:57:50Make that the 18 yard line.
- 1:57:52As Ole' Taylor hustles out to the right.
- 1:57:54Chris Bruegger goes to the left.
- 1:57:56McClinton and Garrett DeSette backs.
- 1:57:59Carolyn the tight end is also split to the right.
- 1:58:02Dawson dropping straight back and up field and it's almost intercepted.
- 1:58:06The receiver is Curtis McCliff and it was almost intercepted by Uli Wood.
- 1:58:12If Uli had got that one he would have set up or perhaps even scored a second touchdown.
- 1:58:21Famous story of Uli Wood of USC.
- 1:58:23He wrote to the Packers and asked for a trial.
- 1:58:28Vince Mombardi said I'd like to take a look at you.
- 1:58:30He's now in his seventh year and one of the great safeties of the national football league.
- 1:58:36So as I should always answer your mail.
- 1:58:39Third and nine for the Chiefs and they've got to pull off this first down and get the ball up again.
- 1:58:44Dawson rolling to the right.
- 1:58:46Looking, making it fast.
- 1:58:48Now pulling and it is almost intercepted again at the 30 yard line.
- 1:58:52Intended there for Chris Burford but defending was her boundary.
- 1:58:56It was incomplete and fourth down and the Chiefs will have to kick them all the way again.
- 1:59:01And Lundy Dawson who had a good first half percentage wise is having his troubles here in the second half.
- 1:59:08And a very smart defensive play by Herb Adderley then who was not drawn up by Lundy Dawson's fake of a run.
- 1:59:14When he was chased around held the ball up his hook to pass and started out like he was going to run.
- 1:59:19But Adderley stayed right with his man.
- 1:59:21Wouldn't come up on Dawson so he was there to knock the ball down after it was thrown.
- 1:59:25Jarrel Wilson is standing on his own too.
- 1:59:28Uli Wood and Donnie Anderson are deep.
- 1:59:31Low driving kick.
- 1:59:33Anderson fades back to his 42.
- 1:59:35Runs to his left. Gets to the 45 and runs into a couple of people led by Bobby Plough.
- 1:59:41Number 14 who made the tackle.
- 1:59:45Might it be a first down for the Green Bay Packers who continue to control the ball.
- 1:59:50Controlling the game of the park 28 to 10.
- 1:59:53But in the fourth quarter ball is placed down right on the 46 yard line in Green Bay.
- 1:59:57The lack of height on Jarrel Wilson's punches could surprise him.
- 2:00:02Most all pro or college teams will try to get their kicker to kick the ball high in the air.
- 2:00:06So if the men going down under the punt have time to get down and defend.
- 2:00:10Jarrel Wilson has really been booming out some line drives.
- 2:00:13Packers now hoping to exert pressure.
- 2:00:16Send Carrow Dale to the right.
- 2:00:18Star hands off to Jim Taylor.
- 2:00:20Makes a fine move at the line of scrimmage and as a result picks up about four yards off to midfield before Buck Buchanan rushes him down.
- 2:00:28He's starting to come to the outside so that blocked and moving off his left foot put back inside and picked up four yards to the 50.
- 2:00:36It'll be second down and six.
- 2:00:3921 to 10 to score. Green Bay leading 14 minutes to go in the ball again.
- 2:00:4314 to 10 was the halftime score.
- 2:00:50Carrow Dale crowding out again to the right. Max McGee who has scored on two touchdown passes of 13 and 37 yards is to the left.
- 2:00:59Paul Horning has not played.
- 2:01:03Star faking the handoff going deep to Max McGee.
- 2:01:06It's going to be Mitchell and Mitchell makes the interception inside the 15 yard line.
- 2:01:12The Kansas City Chiefs take over.
- 2:01:15They've been operating on Willie Mitchell all afternoon.
- 2:01:18First on McGee had a step on Mitchell but the ball was underclawed and Willie made the interception.
- 2:01:28Fine play by Mitchell. The ball is on the 11 yard line of Kansas City.
- 2:01:33Now with nearly 15 minutes of football left the Kansas City Chiefs top back on the field.
- 2:01:3928 to 10 the Packers lead and this the first Super Bowl.
- 2:01:45On the right comes Otis Taylor.
- 2:01:48Perfect goes to the left.
- 2:01:50And this National Football League town Los Angeles is yelling for the Chiefs to go.
- 2:01:54Dawson back to pass. Lots of time.
- 2:01:56Luke Swan has hit.
- 2:01:59He's not going to tell you what a catch.
- 2:02:01That's close to the clear to Matt Otis Taylor but it's still a great catch.
- 2:02:08He was on his tiptoes and lunged forward at the 35 and fell to the 38.
- 2:02:14It's plays like that that can excite and inspire a team.
- 2:02:18Just a great individual effort but you can also see on that particular play the great pass defensive work done by the Green Bay defensive unit as a whole
- 2:02:26because Lundy Dawson must have looked at three other receivers before he finally threw to McClinton and none of them were open.
- 2:02:32Taylor on a quick pitch to Taylor.
- 2:02:34Tried to step around his man and cannot get away and finally falls forward.
- 2:02:39Out across the 40 to the 43 yard line.
- 2:02:42Pick up of the 5 on the play.
- 2:02:44Dawson simply straightened up and threw to Taylor.
- 2:02:47National Football League fans have seen that work many times to Bobby Mitchell.
- 2:02:52Simply try to get the ball out there one on one.
- 2:02:55And hope that Mitchell will step around the defender.
- 2:02:57Here they're hoping that Taylor can step around her battered.
- 2:03:00Apparently he got him on a fake going down he went.
- 2:03:04Second down and long 5 as Dallas to the right.
- 2:03:08Burford to the left.
- 2:03:09Dawson looking to Burford has him at the 50.
- 2:03:12Down to the 48 yard line.
- 2:03:14Chris Burford.
- 2:03:16That's enough for the first down of the Chiefs.
- 2:03:18Brandon 28 to 10 come back.
- 2:03:20Bob Jeter made the stop at the 46.
- 2:03:23Dawson now going to his short pass as a first Green Bay with his big lead.
- 2:03:27Will tend to lay back a bit.
- 2:03:29Figuring we'll give them the short one.
- 2:03:30We just don't want to be hurt with the long bomb as they say.
- 2:03:34Dawson realizing this is trying to pick Green Bay apart at this point by just concentrating on hitting those short ones in front of the Green Bay defenders who are laying back a bit farther.
- 2:03:44Taylor to the right.
- 2:03:46Dawson rolling to the right looking for Taylor.
- 2:03:48He's trying to beat his man.
- 2:03:49He's in back and already but can't quite reach it in the end zone.
- 2:03:56A legal procedure or motion is charged against Kansas City.
- 2:04:00The flag is down and I believe it was Otis Taylor who started off sides and then came back on.
- 2:04:05And so that would cost them five yards if the Packers choose to take it.
- 2:04:14Otis Taylor we notice is instead of going back to the huddle just walking over running over now toward the Kansas City bench.
- 2:04:22Frequently when a pass was ever has gone down the field that far he had run about 60 yards on that play he will just automatically take himself out of the ballgame for a play allowing a freshman to come back in.
- 2:04:34Frank Pitts has gone in after the lower run by Otis Taylor.
- 2:04:39And will replace him as flanker.
- 2:04:41Pitts is second to a man from Southern College.
- 2:04:43Comes from the town of Georgia.
- 2:04:4462190 live speed.
- 2:04:48The legal procedure charge against Kansas City has been accepted and the moves the ball back to the 49 at Kansas City where his first down in 15.
- 2:05:0111 minutes 26 seconds to go.
- 2:05:0328 to 10 the score.
- 2:05:05Pitts comes wide right.
- 2:05:07Dawson dropping straight back under pressure.
- 2:05:10And down with him is Willie Davis.
- 2:05:13Falling him down on the other side of the 40 yard line at the 38.
- 2:05:17The finest scrimmage remember was the 49 at Kansas City.
- 2:05:20A loss of 11.
- 2:05:25Well tack that on to the 15 that they need and it'll be a second down on 26.
- 2:05:35The Packers leading 28 to 10 and this the Super Bowl.
- 2:05:39That was as we said began to creep across the Coliseum floor here in Los Angeles but the temperatures been in the 70s.
- 2:05:46A beautiful day to play a football game.
- 2:05:49Thomas Taylor back in comes wide to the right.
- 2:05:51Berkford goes to the left.
- 2:05:53Rolling to the right is Dawson looking for Taylor and it is knocked down at the last minute by her batter lead.
- 2:06:00A fine defensive play getting one hand in front of Taylor and knocking the ball down and out of bounds.
- 2:06:06It would not have been enough for the first down.
- 2:06:08The ball was at the 46.
- 2:06:10They've got to go to the 36 remember for the first down.
- 2:06:14Third down and 26 yards.
- 2:06:21I need Dawson trying to throw a down and out pattern to Taylor about 15 yards down field and if anything that's the difference between these two bowl clips so far
- 2:06:29because Bart Starr has been able to hit those down and out patterns or down and in patterns 10-15 yards down field with relative ease all afternoon.
- 2:06:39Whereas Dawson has not been able to not because of his lack of ability but because of the fine Green Bay defense.
- 2:06:45A little swing pass just knocked down at the last minute by Bob Brown.
- 2:06:51They had sent Mike Garrett just over the line of scrimmage.
- 2:06:55Dawson went back and tried to loop it to him.
- 2:06:57Vaughn got one hand on it and knocked it down at the line of scrimmage.
- 2:07:01As the Chiefs tried to get Garrett with a little running room hoping to pick up the 26 yards that they need.
- 2:07:07They did not get spoke down from their own 39 yard line.
- 2:07:12Packers leading by the score of 28 to 10.
- 2:07:18Jarrah Wilson is back.
- 2:07:20Willie Wood and Donnie Anderson go deep standing inside their own 25 to take Wilson's punt which is in the air.
- 2:07:26This one is high. Beautiful.
- 2:07:29Anderson lets it hit on the three and it goes into the end zone first and 10 for the Packers at the 20 yard line.
- 2:07:35The Packers with the ball and with the 28 to 10 lead.
- 2:07:41Kansas City's defensive unit comes on the field and Green Bay's offensive unit and Elijah Pitts again goes out.
- 2:07:47And we make note of the fact because it was a great deal said that perhaps Paul Horning would play.
- 2:07:54He has not played yet.
- 2:07:56There's time on the field with the score.
- 2:07:58Green Bay 28 Kansas City 10.
- 2:08:03At the Coliseum in Los Angeles this is Jim Simpson along with George Radaman.
- 2:08:07Of course once this game is over we'll be going to the victors dressing room and as of this moment it looks as though George Radaman
- 2:08:14you'll have to head to the Packers dressing room because Green Bay leads at the moment by the score of 28 to 10.
- 2:08:22Ten minutes 45 seconds to go.
- 2:08:24The Packers with the ball on their own 20 first and 10.
- 2:08:27Hart Starr still in calling signals dropping straight back.
- 2:08:31As time looks for his receivers as Carol Dale at the 44 yard line and he has the ball and steps out of bounds there.
- 2:08:40Russell out of bounds by Willie Mitchell.
- 2:08:44But that time more than he has had in many of his past plays, Hart Starr had all day as they say in a rocking chair from which to throw.
- 2:08:55And we note that just like two weeks ago down in Dallas when he was ahead in the fourth quarter ahead of the Dallas Cowboys by a couple of touchdowns,
- 2:09:02Hart Starr is not inclined to play conservative football and try to run out the clock.
- 2:09:07He wants to keep his team moving, wants to keep scoring.
- 2:09:10Carol Dale goes wide right.
- 2:09:12Max McGee with two touchdowns to his credit is split left.
- 2:09:15First down from the 44, Starr straight back looking to throw and McGee is all by himself.
- 2:09:22Starr is calming his back and Russell is in down at the 17 yard line.
- 2:09:27The hole is taken away by Freddie Williamson but the officials say no sir, McGee has it and it's a first down for the Packers at the 17.
- 2:09:39Talk about ride on Cowboy, the ball is now good back on the 18.
- 2:09:43Willie Mitchell climbed McGee's back and rode in about 10 yards before he finally went down but the Packers leading 28 to 10 have come right back.
- 2:09:54Ten minutes, five seconds to go.
- 2:09:57Fourth quarter, the National Football League's Packers representatives playing extremely well.
- 2:10:04Executed and leading, Starr calling signals. Hands off to Taylor who goes free to him but not for much.
- 2:10:15Bobby Bell who has played a good ball game today at his left side corner spot made the tackle along with Jerry Mays the All League left end.
- 2:10:25Little or no game, perhaps a half yard, we'll call it still second down and about 10.
- 2:10:3428 to 10 the score, Max McGee has caught two touchdown passes, Elijah Pitts has run for one of four yards, Jim Taylor has run for one of 14 yards and McLuhan caught a touchdown pass for Kansas City of seven yards.
- 2:10:49Starr back, looking to throw, flooring up to the left and has Carol Dale at the 12 yard line.
- 2:10:55Knocked down there by Willie Mitchell.
- 2:10:58And never has it been so apparent, George Latimer, that an offense is working on one man in the defense of secondary.
- 2:11:05They certainly seem to be picking on Mitchell, I don't say they seem to be, they are picking on Willie Mitchell all afternoon.
- 2:11:11Even when they're not throwing the ball, they've been running quite a few plays around that and just keeping the pressure on him continuously.
- 2:11:18Park Sir has almost been able to complete passes, I don't want to say at Willie, at Will over there you might say going either to the inside or the outside.
- 2:11:27Third down and three from the 11 yard line, Dale is wide to the right, McGee is on the left side, Fleming is on the right side, Starr hands to Pitts, boy he had a opening for a moment that looked like he was going to go all the way but Johnny Robinson knifed him down at the 5.
- 2:11:42First Greg was leading the way and Greg was actually out knocking down a man at the 10 yard line and Pitts for the moment looked as though he had the angle of the corner.
- 2:11:52Robinson with great lateral speed came from the middle of the line over to the outside of the left side and knocked him down at the 5.
- 2:12:00That's a first down at the 5 for the Packers, by the way Robinson said if you want to be a good defensive back, tennis is a great sport.
- 2:12:10Mark Starr is now 15 for 23, what an afternoon.
- 2:12:15First down five and straight ahead.
- 2:12:18Goes Jim Taylor for a couple of yards perhaps down to the three or the two and a half.
- 2:12:23Bobby Hunt the left side safety made the tackle.
- 2:12:26A pause now 10 seconds for station identification.
- 2:12:32WGY Schenectady a General Electric Broadcasting Company station.
- 2:12:37All is on the two yard line second down.
- 2:12:46Pitts and Taylor the setbacks.
- 2:12:49Starr calling signals.
- 2:12:53Starr still calling signals.
- 2:12:55Jim Taylor swinging wide at the five, at the three and with his effort gets down close to the goal line.
- 2:13:02But they'll mark it on about the six inch line.
- 2:13:07Johnny Robinson who the last time made a tackle of Pitts on the left side.
- 2:13:11This time makes the tackle of Taylor on the right side.
- 2:13:17Heard down and a few inches.
- 2:13:2028 to 10 Packers lead fourth quarter.
- 2:13:30Six minutes 50 seconds to go.
- 2:13:34Coming to the left side.
- 2:13:37Taylor and Pitts.
- 2:13:39As Green Bay has a strong right.
- 2:13:42Ball is given to Pitts.
- 2:13:43Pitts slides back and goes into the end zone.
- 2:13:45Going off his own left side.
- 2:13:47Was hit with the line and swing it.
- 2:13:49A fast-moving pitch and went into the end zone.
- 2:13:52And is now 30 to 40 to 10.
- 2:13:55Green Bay has broken this first of the ball wide open.
- 2:14:11Long channel has come in.
- 2:14:17Rather better than 63,000 we understand.
- 2:14:19Channel kicks and the kick is good.
- 2:14:22It's time now to be in the score now.
- 2:14:25Green Bay 35 Kansas City 10.
- 2:14:29Gene Thomas and Burt Cohn are deep for Kansas City.
- 2:14:32Pete Beathard has been warming up on the sidelines.
- 2:14:3563,036 looking on as Don Chandler kicks off again for the Packers.
- 2:14:40A high kick.
- 2:14:42Ball and Wilson both weighted.
- 2:14:44It's thrown at the one.
- 2:14:45Coming straight up the field across the 10.
- 2:14:46Going to his right.
- 2:14:47Across the 15.
- 2:14:48Out to the 20 yard line.
- 2:14:50And that's about all.
- 2:14:52Jim Grabowski jumps in to make the tackle.
- 2:14:54Along with Tommy Crutcher a linebacker.
- 2:14:56And Red Bacca a flanker.
- 2:14:58That makes his second tackle and a kickoff today.
- 2:15:03Kansas City drawing out with Pete Beathard.
- 2:15:06A USC All-American here.
- 2:15:08Now Kansas City making an appearance for his third year.
- 2:15:13With Kansas City in the close.
- 2:15:15Now they realize it and the band sets up for a home.
- 2:15:19It's a real scrambling quarterback.
- 2:15:21And with a flick of the wrist can throw it a mile.
- 2:15:25He sends Burford to the left.
- 2:15:27Taylor to the right.
- 2:15:32Long count by Beathard.
- 2:15:33He drops straight back.
- 2:15:35Looks.
- 2:15:36Close.
- 2:15:37Has Burford.
- 2:15:38Across the 40 to the 42 yard line.
- 2:15:40Bob Jeter made the tackle there.
- 2:15:42That's it up for the first down for the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 2:15:4935 to 10.
- 2:15:51The Packers lead.
- 2:15:52Score in half time is 14 to 10.
- 2:15:54With the Kansas City Chiefs having the better of it in all statistical departments except the scoreboard.
- 2:16:00And again should Beathard care to continue throwing that type of pattern.
- 2:16:04It should be open because undoubtedly now Green Bay will lay off farther and farther on pass defense.
- 2:16:10Coming up the short pass making sure they don't get hit with the long one though.
- 2:16:14Beathard dropping straight back again.
- 2:16:16Looking now.
- 2:16:17Now decides to run across the 40, across the 45.
- 2:16:19That's a great block at the 45.
- 2:16:21On the sidelines and out of bounds with another first down at the 44 yard line.
- 2:16:30Willie Wood ran him out of bounds along with Bob Jeter.
- 2:16:33But Ray Nitsky had the boom lowered on him as he looked to reach for the scrambling.
- 2:16:39That's it.
- 2:16:41All is put down on the 44.
- 2:16:43First and 10.
- 2:16:44And Beathard very quickly has taken him with two first downs.
- 2:16:53Five minutes and 17 seconds to go.
- 2:16:55In a moment George Radaman will be heading for a dressing room.
- 2:17:00But before you go George after Beathard drops straight back we want to ask you something.
- 2:17:04Beathard back.
- 2:17:05Close and over.
- 2:17:06Close back.
- 2:17:07And the 45 yard line.
- 2:17:09George very quickly your observation on Kansas City and Green Bay.
- 2:17:14Well I think it was something that was predicted by a lot of people.
- 2:17:18Kansas City just was not able to stop the passing of Bart Starr.
- 2:17:22The passing offensive Green Bay this afternoon.
- 2:17:24Kansas City I think stopped the Green Bay running attack far better than anybody here in this stadium.
- 2:17:30Or watching this football game or listening to it and anticipate it.
- 2:17:33Starr just picked him apart with his passing seemed to be able to complete passes whenever he wanted to do so.
- 2:17:39And I think that's been the difference between these two ball clubs.
- 2:17:42His ability to complete passes whenever he wanted against the fact that Kansas City could not do so because it defined defensive secondary of Green Bay.
- 2:17:51Thank you George Radaman.
- 2:17:53As flag's fly as the Packers jump and the Kansas City team jumps.
- 2:17:58And it could be of course a legal procedure with a new quarterback method in there and that's exactly what it is.
- 2:18:03Austin five yards.
- 2:18:04Yards of George Radaman heads now for a dressing room.
- 2:18:08We should have a report at the end of the game.
- 2:18:11The ball is on the 49 yard line.
- 2:18:13And so will be second down at 15.
- 2:18:16Our spotters today for Green Bay and Ludlick and very centered for Kansas City.
- 2:18:22Appreciate their work as this game is now going down in the history.
- 2:18:28For those who will say I told you so the National League Packers are better.
- 2:18:34There are those who say that Kansas City with the interception by Willie Wood.
- 2:18:39The ball had been misspotted and is now two yards extra are given to the Kansas City Chief.
- 2:18:45On the 49er Green Bay Packers.
- 2:18:47There are those who say that the Chiefs just had a bad day.
- 2:18:50May we remind you that the common football draft starts this year.
- 2:18:54And in three years the National Football League and the American Football League will have completed its merger.
- 2:19:00So the question will become academic.
- 2:19:02Right now the planets belong to the National Football League.
- 2:19:05Back to his backfield and down he goes.
- 2:19:08Bob Brown led the way along with Lionel Aldrich.
- 2:19:12Brown the rookie from Arkansas A&M.
- 2:19:156'5, 260 was in on Beathard and threw him for an 11 yard loss.
- 2:19:20Make that 12 inside the 40 to the 39.
- 2:19:2735 to 10 is the score.
- 2:19:30Fourth quarter, five minutes and a few seconds to go.
- 2:19:42He'd Beathard hand on hip leaning into the huddle as he so often does.
- 2:19:49Now sends his Chiefs out of the huddle.
- 2:19:51The doughnut is Taylor coming to the right.
- 2:19:53And Beathard who has had a good day to the left.
- 2:19:55Beathard and Taylor have had a good day.
- 2:19:58Back goes Beathard.
- 2:20:00On third down.
- 2:20:02Long pass, downfield.
- 2:20:05Intended downfield for Chris Beathard.
- 2:20:07Tapped away at the final moments of the 32 yard line and that would have been enough for the first down.
- 2:20:12Bob Jeter broke it up and the Chiefs will have to kick it away.
- 2:20:18Less than five minutes, 4'39 to play.
- 2:20:2135 to 10 Green Bay Leagues.
- 2:20:24Donnie Anderson and Red go deep as Gerald Wilson is coming to hand in the five stepping back inside his own 25 yard line.
- 2:20:31NBC Radio proud to bring you this AFL NFL Championship.
- 2:20:35We remind you of the Palo Alto Desert Classic on NBC Radio.
- 2:20:37February 4th and 5th, Wilson boots the ball high and deep.
- 2:20:42Bearcats called for by Willie Wood at the 18 yard line, first and 10 tackles.
- 2:20:51The tackles this afternoon, dressed in their green jerseys, gold pants, white thermals.
- 2:20:55Kansas City which had not lost all year long, dressed in their white uniforms with red numerals.
- 2:21:01They now find themselves trailing by 25 points, 35 to 10.
- 2:21:11The other end goes out wide to the right.
- 2:21:14Anderson and Grabowski are now on the backfield for Kansas City or rather for Green Bay.
- 2:21:19Paul Horne has not made an appearance.
- 2:21:21Borkowski is the quarterback, thanks to Anderson around the left side.
- 2:21:25Across the 25 still on his feet and hit from behind as he got to the 30 yard line up to the 32 yard line.
- 2:21:31Anderson showing great speed, hit from behind by E.J. Holland.
- 2:21:35Gail Gillingham was leading the way, the right guard, as Vince Lombardi now has begun the substitute.
- 2:21:43Bob Long from Wichita is in, Carol Dale is in, but the quarterback is Zeke Kratkowski, an 11-year veteran from Georgia.
- 2:21:52Jim Grabowski, the rookie from Illinois, and Donnie Anderson, the rookie from Texas Tech are both in.
- 2:22:02First and 10, handoff through Grabowski.
- 2:22:06Grabowski nearly lost the ball, had to turn around for it, and what he did, Buck Buchanan wrestled him down.
- 2:22:18The public address announces that Grabowski has recovered Grabowski's funnel.
- 2:22:23The ball is down at the 32 yard line of Green Bay.
- 2:22:26They lead 35 to 10, Bob Horne in less than four minutes to go now.
- 2:22:32Bob Long goes out wide to the right.
- 2:22:36Zeke Kratkowski calling signals.
- 2:22:38The late afternoon shot on Los Angeles.
- 2:22:41Donnie Anderson going to the right side, gets away from Hedrick, but Hedrick reaches over.
- 2:22:46And one hand grabs him as Freddie Williamson has been leveled and is outlying on the turf at the 33 yard line,
- 2:22:54because it is over Freddie Williamson and Donnie Anderson tripped, and he may have been hit.
- 2:23:06In any event, he is down, and time has been passed, and his time is on the field.
- 2:23:10The score, Green Bay 35, Kansas City 10.
- 2:23:23Jim Simpson along with George Wademan and Freddie Williamson is still out at the 33 yard line, and they're working over him there.
- 2:23:32It would have been with the knee of Donnie Anderson, hit him in the helmet. 35 to 10 is the score.
- 2:23:45Two minutes and 46 seconds to go.
- 2:23:49The pass is with 7-7.
- 2:23:51The Packers came right back, Jim Taylor going over his own left side,
- 2:23:55and then cutting to the outside and running 14 yards for a score to make it 14 to 7.
- 2:23:59But again, the Kansas City Chiefs came back, and on a 31 yard field goal with less than a minute to go in the first half by Mike Mercer,
- 2:24:07closed the gap to 14 to 10.
- 2:24:09And that's the way they went to the dressing room.
- 2:24:11And to repeat, Kansas City had slightly the better in the statistics, even though Green Bay was leading by four points.
- 2:24:17But in the third quarter, in the early moments, Lenny Dawson went back, was trapped, and hung the ball up, throwing it out to his left.
- 2:24:24Willie Wood cut in front of the receiver, picked it off, and ran all the way to the floor where Mike Garrett nailed it.
- 2:24:29On the first play, Elijah Pitts went off the left side for four yards, and the score to make it 21 to 10.
- 2:24:35Well, then the Packers were really rolling, and on the 13 yard pass play, again McGee scored to make it 28 to 10 in the third quarter.
- 2:24:42And here in the fourth quarter, Elijah Pitts, going over from about well half a foot out, made it 35 to 10.
- 2:24:49And of course, it has been Don Chandler who's confronted after each of the touchdowns.
- 2:24:53Now a moment of concern as Hank Stram has come out and gone back.
- 2:24:57Freddie Williamson is still out on the 33 yard line after that play that saw Donnie Anderson sweep to the right.
- 2:25:04Hedrick get an arm on him, and I believe they're going to bring out the stretcher for Freddie Williamson,
- 2:25:09the seven-year veteran from Northwestern, 6'3", 209, 28 years old.
- 2:25:14They have the stretcher out now, and he will be taken from the field.
- 2:25:2135 to 10, and now down in front of us, and he's being asked to leave, a young boy had run across the field,
- 2:25:29went up to Paul Horning and asked for an autograph, and someone politely asked him to leave.
- 2:25:35But Williamson is being carried off the field by a stretcher.
- 2:25:39If we can, I have a report for you before we leave the air on how he is.
- 2:25:44And I certainly try to get it. We do know that Ward Daller injured his shoulder and is out for the game.
- 2:25:49That's what happened in the first period. Bob Long is out wide to the right.
- 2:25:52Carroll Dale comes to the left. He was stirred down and ate.
- 2:25:56Emmett Thomas has replaced Williamson.
- 2:25:58Bacowski back and throwing deep for Carroll Dale, and has not been withdrawn,
- 2:26:03but rather throws more toward the middle of the field, and Dale was out to the left.
- 2:26:08Willie Mitchell was back along with Johnny Robinson defending.
- 2:26:11And so now it'll be fourth down and eight.
- 2:26:18This is the city of Los Angeles, and those concerned with the Super Bowl game,
- 2:26:21the AFL-NFL Championship, have put on quite a display.
- 2:26:24There have been bands from all over the country, a solo performance at halftime by Howell Hurt,
- 2:26:29and we have been privileged to have in our broadcast booth before the game,
- 2:26:33Bob Hope and at halftime, Lance Alworth of the San Diego Chargers down north of the Dallas Cavaliers.
- 2:26:38Quite an afternoon and quite a day for the Green Bay Packers.
- 2:26:44And the person who handled the putting this time is a left-footed kicker, goes by Emmett Thomas at the 25,
- 2:26:49and will roll dead at about the 22-yard line,
- 2:26:56where the Kansas City Chiefs will take over first and 10.
- 2:27:04Looking at clock, two minutes and 22 seconds to go as Hank Scram is walking the sidelines by himself.
- 2:27:12Near a few players realizing it has been quite an afternoon for the Green Bay Packers,
- 2:27:19not his own Kansas City Chiefs.
- 2:27:22But then again, this is the first Super Bowl, and there'll be a chance for two teams,
- 2:27:26whether they be the Packers or Chiefs Revenson, but again, one year from now.
- 2:27:30He'd bethored in as only one setback rolls to his right, going for Volk, going deep to Otis Taylor.
- 2:27:36Taylor cannot catch up to the ball. He and Horb Adderley collided at the 33.
- 2:27:41Adderley fell down. Taylor kept his feet. Tom Brown tried to cover him,
- 2:27:46but had the ball been thrown a little bit shorter, Otis Taylor might have caught it.
- 2:27:53Felted through it well, but the collision between Adderley and Otis Taylor meant that Otis was slowed up quite a bit,
- 2:28:00and he could not reach the ball.
- 2:28:02Second down and 10.
- 2:28:05Less than two minutes to go by a couple of seconds, the officials, and there's six of them here today,
- 2:28:10three from each league plus six other. Let's go to each sideline and say less than two minutes to go.
- 2:28:15A crowd of 63,036 in perfect football weather have watched this, the first AFL-NFL championship game.
- 2:28:26Report from the bench, Freddie Williamson, the cornerback from Northwestern, who is carried from the field,
- 2:28:32but is not believed to have been hurt seriously, which is certainly good news.
- 2:28:40Bathard brings his team out of the aisle. Otis Taylor comes to the right. Chris Burford goes to the left.
- 2:28:45Mike Garrett and Curtis McClinton are set back.
- 2:28:49Bathard dropping straight back this time in a pressure pocket and ducks his head
- 2:28:55and his own momentum carries him down to the ground at the 15-yard line.
- 2:28:59Bathard ducked under one tackle, but his legs went from under him and he could not get up to stop running
- 2:29:05or at least throw again. Jim Wetherack, who is a defensive tackle, a rookie from Los Angeles State, by the way,
- 2:29:12was the man who was pressuring Pete Bathard.
- 2:29:14So it is third down and 16 with a minute and a half to go.
- 2:29:1835 to 10, the Packers lead. They have led all the way. They've been tied once, 7 to 7.
- 2:29:28Bathard taking a long time in the other.
- 2:29:30The Coliseum here gaily decorated with an NFL-AFL Golden Crown of midfield.
- 2:29:36Each of the end zones done in gold with the Chiefs letters at one end in red and the Packers in the other in green.
- 2:29:42Pete Bathard drops back. Throws long and way over throws and almost over throws the entire Kansas City bench,
- 2:29:50but Chris Burford was the intended receiver. Fourth down and 16.
- 2:29:54A minute and 24 seconds to go.
- 2:30:00In a few moments, once this game is over, we will be going down to the dressing room and you will hear the words of
- 2:30:07the Green Bay Packers. It's about Somerall and George Rodham.
- 2:30:10And we'll be there to talk with them. And I'm sure it will be quite a victory ceremony.
- 2:30:14And I'm sure that each team, including the Packers for the Chiefs, has added respect for one another.
- 2:30:20Darrell Wilson standing at the goal line. Kicks the ball away.
- 2:30:25A driving kick sending Donnie Anderson and Willie Wood back.
- 2:30:28It is Woodard takes it at the 31. Coming to the left side for shoot.
- 2:30:31One block takes down two men. But Bobby Ply, number 14, who is very quick to get down under any kick,
- 2:30:37makes the tackle at the 27-yard line.
- 2:30:43A minute and 12 seconds to go.
- 2:30:46Five down on the playing. And apparently this will be stepped off against the Green Bay Packers.
- 2:30:52One-twelve to go.
- 2:30:58As the officials now step it off.
- 2:31:02Clipping. And as George Rodham told you, one of Vince Lombardi's edicts and axioms is that
- 2:31:09unless you're absolutely sure, you're not going to block the man and be charged with a clip.
- 2:31:15But this is the second time in this half. And this time it might be because the Green Bay Packers
- 2:31:19are going with a great many of their reserves.
- 2:31:22Those boys are a little over-anxious to do well in this game.
- 2:31:25Murkowski is in. Call signals from the 13-yard line.
- 2:31:30Handoff is full by Jim Grabowski, who's almost looking for Illinois,
- 2:31:33but Buck Buchanan wrestles him down at the 15-yard line after day number two.
- 2:31:37It'll be second down and eight.
- 2:31:41One minute to go and the first AFL-NFO championship, the Super Bowl.
- 2:31:46Packers, 35. And the Kansas City Chiefs, 10.
- 2:31:51The poor George Rodham had left for the dressing rooms.
- 2:31:55It was his observation that the Kansas City Chiefs simply could not stop the passing of Bart Starr,
- 2:32:02who had quite a day, throwing long, throwing short.
- 2:32:05Jim Taylor had a great day running, too.
- 2:32:07Donnie Anderson, hit behind the line of scrimmage, gets away from one man, goes around that side across the 20,
- 2:32:12and out to the 25 before Jerry Mays, the defensive left end, knocked him out of bounds at the 26.
- 2:32:18Paul Strayer was leading the way. And of course, that stops the clock.
- 2:32:25With 29 seconds to go.
- 2:32:32One more reminder about the Bob Hope Desert Classic on NBC Radio on February the 4th and 5th.
- 2:32:39Now Red Mack, who has seen action with several National Football League teams,
- 2:32:43a former All-American at Notre Dame, number 27, comes in and he replaces Bob Long.
- 2:32:50The flankerback, and Red, immediately went to the wrong side, and now has been told to come over to the left side,
- 2:32:55which he does. He's flipped to the left.
- 2:32:58Latkowski hands to Anderson. Anderson trying to find running room, gets across the line of scrimmage to 25,
- 2:33:04and E.J. Hart tackles him from behind. The clock is running with 20 seconds to go.
- 2:33:09The Packers out in front by 25 points, and this is the first Super Bowl.
- 2:33:16Ten seconds to go.
- 2:33:19The Packers standing around, not willing to get out another play necessarily.
- 2:33:24The Kansas City Chiefs are willing to walk to the sideline, and the Kansas City Chiefs,
- 2:33:29many of them, are walking forward to Green Bay Packers. Cheryl Hedrick taking the hand of Mark Star.
- 2:33:34All of them have come over and are talking to the Packers.
- 2:33:38That's the end of the game with the final score. Green Bay 35 and Kansas City 10.
- 2:33:43We'll be back in a moment for the final wrap-up of today's game.
- 2:33:50Ben Simpson along with George Radaman back at the Coliseum in Los Angeles, and don't go away yet.
- 2:33:55We expect to be able to go to the Green Bay Packers' dressing room in a few moments,
- 2:33:58where George Radaman and Pat Summerall are, and we'll be talking with the Packers
- 2:34:03and, of course, the winning coach, Vince Lombardi.
- 2:34:06Now we have this opportunity of this exciting day, and you may ask,
- 2:34:10how can a 35-to-10 ball game be exciting? Well, it was, because it was 14-to-10 at the half,
- 2:34:16and, of course, this game meant so much. It meant the National Football League for the first time
- 2:34:21putting its prestige and its experience on the line against the seven-year-old American Football League,
- 2:34:27which for years has wanted to do just that, put its prestige on the line against the National Football League.
- 2:34:32Now it's the Green Bay Packers and the NFL that came off with a 35-to-10 victory,
- 2:34:38but a reminder that it was 14-to-10 at the half, and again, one more time,
- 2:34:43because this game will be chronicled in your newspapers and in magazines for some weeks to come.
- 2:34:48Let us go over the scoring play. Max McGee scored first, first quarter, on a 37-yard touchdown play.
- 2:34:55Second quarter on a seven-yard pass to McClendon. It was Kansas City tying it up,
- 2:34:597-7 with 10 minutes and 41 seconds to go, and the Chiefs at that time looked like they were right in the ballgame.
- 2:35:06But the Packers came right back, and a long touchdown pass on third down short yardage to Carrolldale was called back,
- 2:35:12because of a legal motion and interior linemen had moved.
- 2:35:16Mark Starr, who had a tremendous afternoon, put together a 73-yard touchdown marks,
- 2:35:22the final 14 of which were taken by Jim Taylor to make it 14-to-7, and from there on, the Packers were never seriously in trouble.
- 2:35:30At the end of the first half, Mike Mercer took the 31-yard field goal, 14-to-10, but the Chiefs were never to come close.
- 2:35:37In the third quarter, in the first two and a half minutes, Willie Wood intercepted the pass by Len Dawson,
- 2:35:42but hung in the air for the moment, went down the sidelines. Mike Garrett came over and knocked him down on the floor,
- 2:35:48but Elijah Pitts went over on the first play from four yards out to make it 21-to-10.
- 2:35:53The Packers went right back into action, scoring later on a 13-yard pass play from Mark Starr,
- 2:35:59again, who had a great afternoon, for Max McGee, 28-to-10.
- 2:36:03Later in the fourth quarter, Elijah Pitts scored his second touchdown of the day from about one foot out.
- 2:36:09And so Max McGee has scored two touchdowns, and Elijah Pitts has scored two touchdowns, Jim Taylor won.
- 2:36:17And for Kansas City, McClendon got the only touchdown, and Mike Mercer kicked the field goal.
- 2:36:22Paul Horning did not play today. When Vince Lombardi went to make substitutions late in the game,
- 2:36:29he went to Jim Grabowski and Donnie Anderson. He did not go to Paul Horning.
- 2:36:34In a few moments, we'll be going down to the dressing room.
- 2:36:37And of course, for the Green Bay Packers, now, Vince Lombardi said, this is not that big a game.
- 2:36:42There are many other games that have meant just as much to me, but I am sure,
- 2:36:46and those who saw the Packers today at their hotel and their coach, Vince Lombardi,
- 2:36:50know that this game indeed did mean a lot to them, and they've come off with a victory by the score of 35-to-10.
- 2:36:57As for the Kansas City Chiefs, well, it'll be a long spring, but summer will be back,
- 2:37:01and they'll be training once again for the American Football League Championship.
- 2:37:06And by the way, in 1967, this year for the first time, there will be further comparisons,
- 2:37:11although not on the championship level, of American Football League football and the National Football League,
- 2:37:16because many teams will play exhibitions against one another.
- 2:37:20So what has happened here today? On January 15, 1967, is simply the kickoff,
- 2:37:26the inaugural of these teams of the American Football League and the National Football League getting together.
- 2:37:33And as we said, by 1970, it will be one league. The merger will have been accomplished.
- 2:37:38In the meantime, of course, there's the common draft of football players that will take place between now and then.
- 2:37:44There will be no more of this bidding between the two leagues.
- 2:37:48And so, the Green Bay Packers go back to Green Bay or wherever it is that their ballplayers may live,
- 2:37:55secure and happy and confident in the fact that they have proven once again that they are quite a football team.
- 2:38:02Since Vince Lombardi went there in 1959, starting in 1960,
- 2:38:06the Packers have either been in the championship for the National Football League or the playoff goal every year.
- 2:38:12This year, they won their fourth National Football League Championship.
- 2:38:16Since 1960, their fourth under Vince Lombardi. It is quite a football team.
- 2:38:21Hank Strand has never, well, he did one in Dallas, but while in Kansas City, never won the American Football League Championship.
- 2:38:28But did this year with the additions of Mike Garrett, the rookie, a running halfback,
- 2:38:33and the development of Otis Taylor, the farm flanker back, who today showed that he is quite a food-flanker,
- 2:38:38no matter what league you're talking about.
- 2:38:41Strand came up with some speed and the Kansas City Chiefs came up with the championship by knocking off Popolo.
- 2:38:46They got the chance to come against Green Bay and they held in there for the first half only.
- 2:38:52Because after the first half, the interception by Willie Wood just seemed to turn the tide.
- 2:38:58And the Green Bay Packers, veterans of such championship play as this, took it and ran.
- 2:39:04Hit-scoring immediately and from there on, throughout the second half, there was no question,
- 2:39:08the play, the offense, the impetus all belonged to the Green Bay Packers.
- 2:39:16Well, George Raderman and Pat Sumerow by this time should be in the Green Bay Packers dressing room.
- 2:39:22And in a moment, we'll be going down to the dressing room for their report.
- 2:39:26Now, of course, whether or not they will be allowed in the dressing room right away, we don't know.
- 2:39:29So we'll just hang on right here as the band continues to play.
- 2:39:32The count this afternoon, 63,036, turned out of the Los Angeles Coliseum to watch.
- 2:39:39Under perfect and sunny skies, temperature in the 70s, little or no wind, a delightful day for a football game,
- 2:39:47and of course a great day that many people will remember for a long time as the inaugural of the Super Bowl,
- 2:39:56the first meeting between the American Football League and the National Football League,
- 2:39:59which took place here today, January the 15th of 1967.
- 2:40:04Now, football, with the exception of the Flo Bowl, which will be played here between NFL All-Stars
- 2:40:10and the American Football League All-Star Game, which is coming up next Saturday afternoon,
- 2:40:14football is just about over.
- 2:40:17We turn our attention now to other things coming up on NBC Radio, and we remind you of Monitor on NBC,
- 2:40:24which is on every weekend, but we also remind you of a specific NBC radio pick-up,
- 2:40:29which will be the Bob Hope Desert Classic, coming up on February 4th and 5th.
- 2:40:36This giant Coliseum is about emptied out now, of its 63,000-plus fans, but one of the bands,
- 2:40:42one of the many bands that was here for the Super Bowl, continues to play at midfield.
- 2:40:50Now, let us go down to the dressing room to that summer off.
- 2:40:55So, we should have perhaps as many as 12 or 15 interleague games next summer.
- 2:41:00What are the differences now remain for you to work out?
- 2:41:03For example, you have one or two rule differences this afternoon's game.
- 2:41:08Have those things been resolved, or are they still being resolved?
- 2:41:11Well, one of the main ones left open is still that two-point conversion.
- 2:41:14It was not used today, but it will be used in all of the interleague preseason games next summer
- 2:41:19and the NFL club has a chance to see how it works.
- 2:41:22And as to the future of the two-point conversion, we'll take it up after this summer perhaps.
- 2:41:27What about the financial payoff now? $15,000 to the winner, $8,500 to the loser, or $75,000 to the loser?
- 2:41:35Correct.
- 2:41:36Is that predetermined, or what effect did you say to the prize?
- 2:41:39Yes, those were set figures, and then after taking those and game expenses out,
- 2:41:45we'll give them about $1,170,000 to the competing players, and we'll take game expenses out.
- 2:41:50And then after that, 40% of the remainder would go to their player pension funds,
- 2:41:55and then 15% to each league office, and 15% to each of the competing clubs.
- 2:42:00So from a financial standpoint, it was quite successful.
- 2:42:04You went all the way, it was a pretty good afternoon.
- 2:42:06Yes, it was.
- 2:42:07Both teams end for you as commissioner of the two leagues. What is your title now?
- 2:42:12Commissioner of the two leagues, and hopefully NFL president soon so I can take over another half an hour.
- 2:42:18Thank you very, very much.
- 2:42:19Thank you, Dad.
- 2:42:20Congratulations to you on a wonderful tour this afternoon.
- 2:42:22We'll have more from both the dressing room in just a moment.
- 2:42:25Okay.
- 2:42:27Well, you heard Pat Sumaral talking with the commissioner of the National Football League,
- 2:42:31as well as the American Football League, Pete Rozelle,
- 2:42:34and something that perhaps we did not mention in the closing moments he mentioned,
- 2:42:38is that the families of the Green Bay Packers North, each of the winning players gets $15,000.
- 2:42:44The losing players get $7,500.
- 2:42:47Well, the Coliseum is about empty, but as we said, this game will be talked about for a long, long time.
- 2:42:53It has been won by the Green Bay Packers.
- 2:42:55For this NBC radio coverage of the AFL-NFL Championship, the Super Bowl,
- 2:43:00our producer was Len Dillon, our engineer, John Pollock.
- 2:43:04The Super Bowl, the 1967 AFL-NFL Championship game, has been brought to you by
- 2:43:10Plymouth Division of Chrysler Motors Corporation,
- 2:43:13Sea York Plymouth dealer doing his first annual win-you-over sale,
- 2:43:17by Sports Illustrated for the best in sports every week,
- 2:43:21and by Eastman Dillon, Union Securities & Company, members of the New York Stock Exchange.
- 2:43:26From the Coliseum in Los Angeles, this is Jim Simpson, along with George Radaman,
- 2:43:31saying so long and reminding you again of the final score, the Green Bay Packers 35,
- 2:43:36the Kansas City Chiefs 10.
- 2:43:39This has been a sports presentation of NBC News.
- 2:43:44MUSIC
