- 0:00Speaker 1: Just the start of a long broadcast day here on
- 0:02Speaker 1: the Yukon Sports Network, the Women's Basketball Coaches Show, We've
- 0:05Speaker 1: Got Hockey and UMass at the top of the hour,
- 0:07Speaker 1: and then tonight at seven thirty, it's the Men and
- 0:10Speaker 1: Saint John's with Mike and Wayne over at Gamble Pavilion,
- 0:13Speaker 1: all in the Yukon Sports Network, the Varsity Network App,
- 0:16Speaker 1: and the Varsity Network dot Com. Here with coach Oriema
- 0:19Speaker 1: as we look back at the Tennessee game, Boy, Tennessee
- 0:22Speaker 1: really got after it on the boards, Geno, which is
- 0:24Speaker 1: no surprise, but it seemed like and I'm using an
- 0:27Speaker 1: old calhounism here, seemed to impose their will on the
- 0:30Speaker 1: glass in the second half and that that sort of
- 0:33Speaker 1: helped turn the tide in their favorite.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Isn't it. I think so? I think so. I think
- 0:40Speaker 2: we we did a great job in the first half.
- 0:43Speaker 2: You know, I think we actually even out rebounded them
- 0:47Speaker 2: maybe in the first half. And you know, then we
- 0:51Speaker 2: go into the second half and things got away from us.
- 0:58Speaker 2: You know, we play that small lineup. You know, maybe
- 1:02Speaker 2: we played that small lineup too long because I thought
- 1:05Speaker 2: we needed more ball hammers in there, and we need
- 1:07Speaker 2: more more ways to attack their pressure and and and
- 1:13Speaker 2: get those thirty five layups, but it came at a cost.
- 1:18Speaker 2: You know, some we just they just beat us. You know,
- 1:24Speaker 2: they're they're bigger and longer than we than we were.
- 1:29Speaker 2: I think even more than the rebounding, I thought it
- 1:31Speaker 2: was their ability too one on one take our guards
- 1:38Speaker 2: and not just our guards are for everybody, take them
- 1:41Speaker 2: into the lane and score over us. And that was
- 1:44Speaker 2: disappointing because you know, defensively, you know, we've we've traditionally
- 1:49Speaker 2: been really, really good, but this team is not a
- 1:52Speaker 2: very good defensive team when it comes to guarding triple
- 1:56Speaker 2: penetration and things like that, and so things that we
- 2:01Speaker 2: have to get better at, things that you know, we
- 2:05Speaker 2: have to tighten up. You know, they may not show
- 2:09Speaker 2: up in a regular season game in the middle of January,
- 2:13Speaker 2: but they certainly show up in February on the road
- 2:15Speaker 2: against her, you know, a top twenty teen.
- 2:19Speaker 1: I do think Sharah handled Thompson bowling. I mean, you know,
- 2:23Speaker 1: eighteen and nine, those are good numbers here. Yeah, Okay,
- 2:26Speaker 1: she had five turnovers. I know one of those came
- 2:29Speaker 1: during the eleven nothing run when she got trapped and
- 2:32Speaker 1: it was a predictable pass that got picked up. But
- 2:34Speaker 1: what'd you think overall of her play last night?
- 2:37Speaker 2: I thought I thought I thought she was great. I
- 2:40Speaker 2: thought we didn't give her the ball enough. There were
- 2:43Speaker 2: times when I think we had her and we didn't
- 2:44Speaker 2: throw it to her. She's going to keep getting more
- 2:48Speaker 2: aggressive and more aggressive, and she's going to make those
- 2:50Speaker 2: kinds of mistakes because she is young and she had
- 2:52Speaker 2: not been in those situations, you know. So no, I
- 2:59Speaker 2: think she needs to be more assertive. Even I think
- 3:01Speaker 2: she has to take more risk, more chances. But she
- 3:06Speaker 2: played too many minutes as far as I'm concerned, you know,
- 3:10Speaker 2: so we've got to alleviate that. But no, I thought
- 3:15Speaker 2: I thought she handed herself great. I wish she would
- 3:17Speaker 2: have made a three or two because I think that
- 3:19Speaker 2: would have, you know, loosened up a lot of other things,
- 3:24Speaker 2: you know, because it's hard going against that size inside
- 3:27Speaker 2: over and over again. But now I was Believe me,
- 3:33Speaker 2: there hasn't been one game this year that I've looked
- 3:36Speaker 2: back and said, boy, I was really disappointed in Sarah.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean she played almost thirty nine minutes, all right.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Having said that, and you said too many minutes? Is
- 3:43Speaker 1: that a case obviously where ice would have been a
- 3:45Speaker 1: fact or would have at least alleviate some of those
- 3:48Speaker 1: minutes last night.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Maybe maybe I think that would have given us one
- 3:52Speaker 2: more you know, one more big body in there to
- 3:55Speaker 2: throw at those guys. But you know, got to go
- 4:00Speaker 2: with what you got. And you know, as I've been
- 4:03Speaker 2: saying all year, you know, we gotta we got to
- 4:06Speaker 2: get more out of Jenna. And that's all there is
- 4:08Speaker 2: to it. I mean, I going into the season, I thought, wow,
- 4:12Speaker 2: you know, this is this is exactly where we were missing,
- 4:14Speaker 2: you know, a big body. We haven't had a presence
- 4:16Speaker 2: like that in a long time, and that hasn't been
- 4:19Speaker 2: the case. So you know, we got to try keep
- 4:23Speaker 2: trying to get get more production from her. And I
- 4:28Speaker 2: think that would help a lot.
- 4:30Speaker 1: You know, what's the next step in that progression? What's
- 4:32Speaker 1: what's holding her back? Or is she her own worst enemy?
- 4:35Speaker 2: She's got to grow up a little bit for number one,
- 4:38Speaker 2: and uh and that's you know, obviously she's she's young,
- 4:43Speaker 2: she's only a freshman, but you know she's she's just
- 4:49Speaker 2: she's a tough one. You know, she's got to be
- 4:51Speaker 2: more receptive to coaching. That's the bottom line, you know,
- 4:54Speaker 2: that's it. I mean, sometimes it's complicated, sometimes it's very simple.
- 4:59Speaker 1: So is this kind of like I'm going to go
- 5:01Speaker 1: back to Nika's freshman year kind of the same thing
- 5:03Speaker 1: are a little different, No.
- 5:08Speaker 2: I think it's different. You know, two different personalities, two
- 5:10Speaker 2: different positions. You know, the one thing you could never
- 5:16Speaker 2: question about Nico was her aggressiveness and her passion and
- 5:20Speaker 2: you know, just the intensity level that she brought to
- 5:24Speaker 2: the court. And so it's now completely different.
- 5:29Speaker 1: You know, what about Morgan Shelley. I mean, she shows
- 5:32Speaker 1: a lot of good things on the floor, but she
- 5:35Speaker 1: can be her own worst enemy, particularly kimmitting files. What
- 5:38Speaker 1: do you like about her development so far?
- 5:42Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's touch and go. You know, when it's
- 5:45Speaker 2: going great, I love keeping her out there. When it's not,
- 5:51Speaker 2: then it's hard. But again, you know, these are these
- 5:57Speaker 2: are freshmen that are experiencing things for the very first time,
- 6:02Speaker 2: and the more times that we put them in those situations,
- 6:05Speaker 2: the better, I would think. But you know, I think
- 6:12Speaker 2: I think Tennessee has the has the kind of length
- 6:16Speaker 2: and the kind of substitution patterns that that really make
- 6:22Speaker 2: you really concentrate and make you really keep your you know,
- 6:27Speaker 2: keep your mind on what exactly is going on, and
- 6:32Speaker 2: and and I think when you're young and having experienced
- 6:36Speaker 2: anything like that, it's, you know, like friends. I don't
- 6:39Speaker 2: know if KK would have been able to handle that
- 6:40Speaker 2: last year, you know. So it takes, it takes going
- 6:45Speaker 2: through these things before you actually feel comfortable.
- 6:48Speaker 1: We'll get into that substituting pattern in the next segment.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Here as you're listening to the Yukon Women's Basketball Coaches Show. Here,
- 6:53Speaker 1: I on Lairfield. Stay with us.
