- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome everyone to the Monday edition of Fair Territory. I'm
- 0:03Speaker 1: Ken Rosenthal, and I'm coming to you this morning live
- 0:06Speaker 1: from Pirates Camp. You can't really tell looking at where
- 0:10Speaker 1: I am, but this is the office of Pirates Media
- 0:12Speaker 1: relations director Dan Hart. I appreciate Dan lending me his
- 0:16Speaker 1: office for this next half hour. We've got a ton
- 0:18Speaker 1: to get through as we meander through spring training in
- 0:22Speaker 1: Florida and Arizona. First news this morning from John Hayman,
- 0:26Speaker 1: John reporting that Michael Conforto, the outfielder, has signed a
- 0:30Speaker 1: minor league deal with the Cubs. Not clear what his
- 0:33Speaker 1: role might be yet. If he makes the team, the
- 0:35Speaker 1: Cubs obviously have a set outfield. Confordo at one time
- 0:39Speaker 1: was considered a really pop prospect and a really good player.
- 0:43Speaker 1: And yet it's the time of year now when we
- 0:46Speaker 1: see legitimate major league players like Michael Conforto, like Reese Hoskins,
- 0:52Speaker 1: signed minor league deals. Ree Hoskins yesterday agreeing on Sunday,
- 0:56Speaker 1: I should say to a deal with the Cleveland Guardians,
- 1:00Speaker 1: a minor league deal in his case as well, for
- 1:03Speaker 1: the Guardians, who had not signed any hitter, not one hitter,
- 1:07Speaker 1: to a major league contract. This offseason. This is actually
- 1:11Speaker 1: something of a big addition. This is a team that
- 1:16Speaker 1: won the Al Central last season in kind of miraculous fashion, right,
- 1:19Speaker 1: remember that run down the stretch, and they did it
- 1:23Speaker 1: while finishing twenty eighth in the major leagues in run score.
- 1:26Speaker 1: They made the playoffs with the third worst offense in
- 1:29Speaker 1: the entire league. Hard to do. And then this offseason,
- 1:34Speaker 1: as I said, they didn't do anything to upgrade their
- 1:37Speaker 1: offense because in part they have a lot of young
- 1:40Speaker 1: players coming that they're excited about. Okay, fine, well here's
- 1:44Speaker 1: Rhys Hoskins. He steps in. They badly need right handed hitting.
- 1:47Speaker 1: He should help in that regard. Even last season he's
- 1:51Speaker 1: not what he once was in the Philadelphia Phillies uniform,
- 1:54Speaker 1: but last season eight percent above league average in ops plus.
- 1:58Speaker 1: That is an above average major league player. So we
- 2:02Speaker 1: still have some other free agents out there as well,
- 2:05Speaker 1: Lucas Giolito, Zach Lettel, both right handed starting pitchers with
- 2:10Speaker 1: teams now incurring injuries like the Atlanta Braves. And you
- 2:14Speaker 1: also have Max Schurzer still out there. I wrote with
- 2:17Speaker 1: Mitch Bannon of The Athletic over the weekend how he
- 2:20Speaker 1: ultimately could end up back with the Toronto Blue Jays,
- 2:24Speaker 1: so Confordo to the Cubs, Hoskins to the Guardians, and
- 2:28Speaker 1: much more going on in the states of Florida and Arizona.
- 2:31Speaker 1: I hope everybody up north is surviving the snow today,
- 2:35Speaker 1: but obviously it's been a bad winter. Hopefully the baseball
- 2:40Speaker 1: news can kind of warm you up and cheer you
- 2:42Speaker 1: up now. I wrote about the Red Sox this morning,
- 2:44Speaker 1: the Boston Red Sox, that was my first visit here
- 2:47Speaker 1: in Florida the other day. And the question with the
- 2:49Speaker 1: Red Sox, and this is the question that I think
- 2:51Speaker 1: will define their season is how good can their offense be?
- 2:56Speaker 1: We know what has happened with the Red Sox in
- 2:58Speaker 1: the last twelve months or so. Traded Ralphael Devers, they
- 3:01Speaker 1: failed to re sign his replacement, Alex Bregman, and they're
- 3:05Speaker 1: left with a different kind of team, almost like the
- 3:08Speaker 1: Mets in that they reshaped their team somewhat for different reasons,
- 3:12Speaker 1: different ways, different motivations. But the Red Sox they have
- 3:16Speaker 1: a strong rotation. They should have a good back of
- 3:18Speaker 1: the bullpen. The offense is what is in question. They've
- 3:22Speaker 1: added Wilson Contreras, They've added Chad Durbin to I'm sorry,
- 3:26Speaker 1: Caleb Durbin. Two guys who should hit well in Fenry Park.
- 3:29Speaker 1: But at the same time, there is a question of
- 3:32Speaker 1: whether they will have enough power. And there's a question
- 3:35Speaker 1: as well, And this is the one I raised in
- 3:37Speaker 1: the column, probably most prominently, are they going to ask
- 3:40Speaker 1: too much of Roman Anthony? Now, Roman Anthony is, of
- 3:44Speaker 1: course the game's top prospect. Last year, came up, made
- 3:47Speaker 1: an extremely impressive debut with Boston before his season ended
- 3:51Speaker 1: an injury. But Roman Anthony is twenty one years old,
- 3:54Speaker 1: and you're asking him to be the centerpiece of a
- 3:59Speaker 1: team that in the past has had great offensive players,
- 4:03Speaker 1: a team that should in Fenway Park always be something
- 4:06Speaker 1: of an offensive juggernaut. Is Anthony capable of that? Absolutely?
- 4:10Speaker 1: He is capable of that. But the major leagues are
- 4:13Speaker 1: much different than the miners now. In the miners, as
- 4:16Speaker 1: I wrote, they play six games series, stay in one
- 4:19Speaker 1: site all week, then they have an off day on Monday.
- 4:23Speaker 1: And also most minor league players get a scheduled off
- 4:25Speaker 1: day during the week. They are not necessarily prepared for
- 4:29Speaker 1: the rigors of major league travel and the major league schedule.
- 4:33Speaker 1: So to ask Roman Anthony this year to play one
- 4:36Speaker 1: hundred and fifty games. That might be a stretch. Okay,
- 4:40Speaker 1: moving on to the other team in Fort Myers, Florida,
- 4:43Speaker 1: that would be the Minnesota Twins. Twins had some rough
- 4:46Speaker 1: news in the past week, learning that Pablo Lopez will
- 4:49Speaker 1: undergo Tommy John surgery, and they had a scare just
- 4:53Speaker 1: a couple of days ago when Joe Ryan was scratched
- 4:56Speaker 1: from a start. Turns out that he has only inflammation
- 4:59Speaker 1: in that or back. He might be questionable for the
- 5:02Speaker 1: WBC now, but he is healthy, should be fine for
- 5:05Speaker 1: Opening Day. But this raises the point of teams that
- 5:10Speaker 1: wait too long to trade their players, and we see
- 5:12Speaker 1: this happen all the time in baseball. The Twins are
- 5:15Speaker 1: a team that, of course deconstructed in a major way
- 5:19Speaker 1: last July at the deadline. You remember all the players
- 5:22Speaker 1: that they moved, Carea being the headline, a number of
- 5:25Speaker 1: others as well, including really their entire bullpen. At that time,
- 5:29Speaker 1: they chose not to trade Joe Ryan, not to trade
- 5:32Speaker 1: Pablo Lopez, and I think Pablo might have been heard
- 5:35Speaker 1: at that time, but Joe Ryan they kept. And the
- 5:37Speaker 1: danger when you do that is you're risking a player
- 5:41Speaker 1: or pitcher getting injured or not performing to his previous norms.
- 5:47Speaker 1: The Twins in this case with Pablo Lopez, they were
- 5:50Speaker 1: probably going to trade him at the deadline if he
- 5:52Speaker 1: was healthy this year. Joe Ryan might have been a
- 5:55Speaker 1: trade cannon and still might be a trade candidate for
- 5:57Speaker 1: them at the deadline. They talk about them competing. The
- 6:00Speaker 1: Twins keeps saying we want to compete, we want to
- 6:02Speaker 1: be back in the al Central mix and all that. Well,
- 6:05Speaker 1: they haven't spent enough money to do that, and now
- 6:08Speaker 1: they have this question of their rotation without one of
- 6:11Speaker 1: their big premier starters. This team essentially built its rotation
- 6:16Speaker 1: around Lopez and Ryan and then his physician group around
- 6:20Speaker 1: Byron Buxton and some others as well. So we'll see
- 6:24Speaker 1: what happens with the Twins. If you remember, the Miami
- 6:26Speaker 1: Marlins kind of did the same thing last year, kept
- 6:29Speaker 1: all their starters, ultimately traded this offseason, Edward Cabrera and
- 6:33Speaker 1: Ryan Weathers kept Sandy Alcantra, and they're running the same
- 6:37Speaker 1: risk with al Contra that certainly the Twins ran with
- 6:40Speaker 1: Pablo Lopez. Now Sandy's coming off as Tommy John. He
- 6:43Speaker 1: should be fine, but as you hold guys, you again
- 6:48Speaker 1: run the risk of injury or poor performance. I don't
- 6:51Speaker 1: expect that to happen with Santa ALCNTRA, and I expect
- 6:54Speaker 1: him to be a guy who is a trade candidate.
- 6:57Speaker 1: If the Marlins are not in contention, very well might be.
- 7:01Speaker 1: But again, this just whole, this whole scenario this weekend
- 7:05Speaker 1: just posed the question again about waiting too long for
- 7:09Speaker 1: certain players to be traded. You can hold them too far,
- 7:14Speaker 1: you can keep them too much, and that point, sometimes
- 7:18Speaker 1: you get stuck and sometimes you end up in a
- 7:20Speaker 1: bad place. All right, last point before I get to
- 7:23Speaker 1: the inside dish. You might have noticed comments from Angels
- 7:26Speaker 1: owner Arty Moreno recently about how the Angels took a
- 7:31Speaker 1: survey of their fans, and Arti Moreno said that winning
- 7:36Speaker 1: for fans was not in their top five things that
- 7:39Speaker 1: they really wanted. Affordability was number one. Winning wasn't even
- 7:42Speaker 1: in the top five. Now, one, I'd like to see
- 7:45Speaker 1: this survey. No one has seemed to have surfaced it
- 7:49Speaker 1: just yet. And number two, that is an absurd premise.
- 7:52Speaker 1: And I seriously doubt any sampling of Angels fans or
- 7:56Speaker 1: at fans in any city would say and winning's not
- 8:01Speaker 1: a big deal, not in my top five. I want
- 8:03Speaker 1: good concessions, I want cheap parking, I want affordability. I
- 8:07Speaker 1: want a good entertainment. No, no, no, no, no, fans want
- 8:12Speaker 1: to win. Arnie Moreno should know fans want to win.
- 8:15Speaker 1: You see the Samblum tweet there, and he wrote about
- 8:18Speaker 1: this as well. And I will just say this about
- 8:20Speaker 1: Artie Moreno. Dork of the Week is coming up on Thursday,
- 8:25Speaker 1: and I mentioned last week the Red Sox owners were
- 8:27Speaker 1: going to be tough to beat, and Tony Clark beat them.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Artie Moreno is going to be tough to beat this
- 8:32Speaker 1: week unless we see that survey. Let's see it. Let's
- 8:35Speaker 1: see the survey says, as they used to say on
- 8:38Speaker 1: a certain game show, Let's see exactly what the Angels
- 8:42Speaker 1: were talking about here, because I'm not buying that fans
- 8:46Speaker 1: don't care about winning Angels. Fans do not care about
- 8:49Speaker 1: winning Angels. Fans I am quite sure would love to win.
- 8:54Speaker 1: All right, we'll be back with the Inside Dish right after.
- 8:56Speaker 2: This, Tricia. I'm here at spring training where the games
- 8:59Speaker 2: have started. The weather is beautiful, and soon enough I'll
- 9:02Speaker 2: be at the WVC with a Stacked Team USA, Scooble Schemes,
- 9:07Speaker 2: Judge Rally, Bobby Witt Junior. Where else would you rather
- 9:11Speaker 2: get seats than on Sea Key the number one rated
- 9:14Speaker 2: ticketing app with over seventy thousand events listed on SeatGeek.
- 9:18Speaker 2: It's not just baseball, there's the NBA concerts. Festivals in
- 9:21Speaker 2: the World Cup are now on there as well, which
- 9:23Speaker 2: would be great to be at.
- 9:25Speaker 3: See geek has your back. Each ticket is rated on
- 9:28Speaker 3: a scale of one to ten, so you know that
- 9:30Speaker 3: you're getting a good deal, So look for the green dots.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Green means good and red means bad. Plus every ticket
- 9:36Speaker 3: is backed by their buyer guarantee. And of course I
- 9:40Speaker 3: have a code for you guys. You can use code
- 9:42Speaker 3: Territory ten for ten percent off your next set of
- 9:45Speaker 3: tickets at seat Geek. That's ten percent off any tickets
- 9:48Speaker 3: with promo code Territory ten. Make sure you click the
- 9:51Speaker 3: link in the description to download the app and have
- 9:53Speaker 3: the code automatically added to your account so that you
- 9:56Speaker 3: can use it later. Wow.
- 10:01Speaker 1: Well, all right, time now for the inside dish, the
- 10:06Speaker 1: part of the show where I talk about maybe a
- 10:08Speaker 1: story I've written, maybe a trend in the game or
- 10:11Speaker 1: maybe I take a stroll back in time. Now. I
- 10:14Speaker 1: don't like to do that. I like to talk about
- 10:17Speaker 1: the present and not the past. But I'm going to
- 10:19Speaker 1: kind of blend the two this morning on the inside Dish,
- 10:23Speaker 1: because I experienced something over the weekend at Orioles camp
- 10:26Speaker 1: that just jogged my memory about what it was like
- 10:29Speaker 1: when I first started covering the Orioles back in nineteen
- 10:32Speaker 1: eighty seven. That's right. This is actually my fortieth spring training,
- 10:36Speaker 1: number forty, and my first spring training. I was hired
- 10:41Speaker 1: at the age of twenty four in the middle of
- 10:43Speaker 1: spring training and went down to Miami to cover the
- 10:47Speaker 1: Baltimore Oriols. That was the job I was hired for,
- 10:49Speaker 1: to compete against Tim Kirkton now with the ESPN and
- 10:52Speaker 1: Richard Justice then with the Washington Post. These were two
- 10:54Speaker 1: of the giants in baseball writing at the time and
- 10:58Speaker 1: even now, and let's just say that was overmatched. But
- 11:01Speaker 1: we digress. What stood out that first spring training was
- 11:05Speaker 1: the facility where the Orioles played. It was Miami Stadium,
- 11:08Speaker 1: actually Bobby Maduro Stadium it was called. It was in
- 11:11Speaker 1: downtown Miami. It was not in a great neighborhood, and
- 11:15Speaker 1: it was kind of a rundown facility. The stadium was
- 11:19Speaker 1: what it was, and off to the side of the
- 11:21Speaker 1: stadium there was what they called the Little Field, and
- 11:24Speaker 1: it was basically an infield where they could practice in
- 11:27Speaker 1: field in addition to having, of course the major league
- 11:30Speaker 1: portion the major League stadium for spring training games. That
- 11:34Speaker 1: was the extent of the Oriel spring training facilities. That
- 11:39Speaker 1: was it. They're minor leaguers trained up the road at
- 11:43Speaker 1: Saint Thomas University that was about thirty miles north, so
- 11:45Speaker 1: their minor leaguers were nowhere near there. They couldn't be
- 11:48Speaker 1: because there was simply not enough room for everyone to
- 11:51Speaker 1: train at once. There was really not enough room for
- 11:53Speaker 1: major leaguers to train. All the advanced things you see today. No,
- 11:58Speaker 1: none of that existed, and the Oriols for a time
- 12:01Speaker 1: were kind of a nomadic team in the spring. At
- 12:05Speaker 1: one point they had their minor leaguers in Sarasota across
- 12:08Speaker 1: the state on the western side of the state, while
- 12:12Speaker 1: the team was either in Miami or Fort Lauderdale, so
- 12:15Speaker 1: the minor leaguers and major leaguers were totally separated. And
- 12:19Speaker 1: then you also had a situation one year where they
- 12:23Speaker 1: played no home games because the entire operation moved to Sarasota,
- 12:28Speaker 1: but they didn't have a stadium yet there. So why
- 12:30Speaker 1: do I mention all this? I mention all this because
- 12:34Speaker 1: the Oriols this spring opened up a twenty three million dollar,
- 12:39Speaker 1: forty seven thousand square foot player development facility right at
- 12:43Speaker 1: their complex at ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota. Now, their
- 12:46Speaker 1: minor leaguers are still in a different part of Sarasota,
- 12:49Speaker 1: so it's not all unified as that. Some teams have
- 12:53Speaker 1: that situation in their own spring complexes. But here you
- 12:56Speaker 1: look at that facility. This is some video that the
- 12:58Speaker 1: Oriols supplied of it, and there are some amazing things
- 13:02Speaker 1: going on in there.
- 13:02Speaker 3: Now.
- 13:03Speaker 1: A lot of teams have these kinds of setups now
- 13:06Speaker 1: at their spring training complexes, but with the Orioles, this
- 13:09Speaker 1: wasn't even possible until the new ownership led by David
- 13:12Speaker 1: Rubinstein took over. Michae Elias President Baseball Operations. He wanted
- 13:16Speaker 1: something like this for years but couldn't get the approval.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Rubinstein came in improved it right away. And what they
- 13:23Speaker 1: have here and I'll try to go through it. You
- 13:26Speaker 1: can see it right there. There are four batting cages,
- 13:29Speaker 1: and these are the big time batting cages with all
- 13:32Speaker 1: the accouterments going on, the high speed stuff, the biomechanics
- 13:37Speaker 1: pitching lab. They have that as well, with thirty plus
- 13:39Speaker 1: cameras in there. And in the part where the cages
- 13:44Speaker 1: are the batting cages, there are four different cages, but
- 13:48Speaker 1: if you lift the nets up that separate them, then
- 13:50Speaker 1: you have an entire full infield. And this is all indoors,
- 13:55Speaker 1: so the Orioles when it rains in Florida, which it
- 13:58Speaker 1: does on occasion, they don't have to worry about not
- 14:01Speaker 1: getting their working. They get all their working. There were
- 14:03Speaker 1: also eight bullpen mountains in this facility, so it's all there.
- 14:09Speaker 1: It's all there for them. And during the winter time
- 14:12Speaker 1: and also even during the season, players can rehab at
- 14:16Speaker 1: this complex in the same way and they can use
- 14:19Speaker 1: it for their Florida Complex League affiliate as well. So
- 14:23Speaker 1: it's weather protected obviously, and it just gives the Orioles
- 14:27Speaker 1: all of the state of the art things that you
- 14:29Speaker 1: would need most teams have now, but all under one roof.
- 14:33Speaker 1: It's an amazing thing to see this, and it's amazing
- 14:37Speaker 1: really how far the game has come in all these
- 14:41Speaker 1: years that I've covered it. None of this technology existed
- 14:44Speaker 1: when I was first starting out as a baseball writer. Heck,
- 14:48Speaker 1: analytics didn't even exist. We're going way back. I know
- 14:51Speaker 1: I'm dating myself and all that, but the point of
- 14:54Speaker 1: it is the game has come so far analytically technologically,
- 15:00Speaker 1: all these different areas, and now the way teams can
- 15:04Speaker 1: care for players and treat players and develop players. That's
- 15:07Speaker 1: the point of this all. It's just at a totally
- 15:10Speaker 1: different level than it once was. In that facility as well,
- 15:15Speaker 1: there are conference rooms and there's even a player's lounge,
- 15:18Speaker 1: and in that conference center. The conference rooms, I should say,
- 15:23Speaker 1: there is one for pitchers, there is one for hitters.
- 15:25Speaker 1: When I was there taking a tour of that facility,
- 15:29Speaker 1: they were having the catchers all in one room meeting
- 15:33Speaker 1: and going over some things through video and other aspects
- 15:36Speaker 1: as well. Again, the advances are incredible. They are exemplified
- 15:42Speaker 1: by this facility, and good for the Oriols in getting
- 15:45Speaker 1: this done. Now. Again, I don't want to just single
- 15:47Speaker 1: out the Oriols and have fans come at me.
- 15:50Speaker 4: My team is doing Yes, all teams are kind of
- 15:53Speaker 4: doing this, but this.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Particular facility it's the newest one and it's a major
- 15:58Speaker 1: step forward for the Orioles and Michael Olias, their president
- 16:02Speaker 1: Baseball Operations, believe the indoor hitting facility might be the
- 16:06Speaker 1: best in the world. I don't know. I don't visit
- 16:08Speaker 1: all these different facilities, but again, they've got it all
- 16:11Speaker 1: going in there, and it's really impressive to see. Now,
- 16:14Speaker 1: how will this translate to helping the team? It certainly
- 16:18Speaker 1: helps players get their work in during the spring, and
- 16:21Speaker 1: the day I was there, a number of their hitters
- 16:24Speaker 1: were taking batting practice inside instead of outside. This is
- 16:28Speaker 1: something that happens in major league clubhouses as well during
- 16:31Speaker 1: the year because inside you still get the ball flight
- 16:34Speaker 1: simulation that you want, you still get the data analysis
- 16:37Speaker 1: that you want, and guys, some of them were just
- 16:40Speaker 1: more comfortable doing it that way. And I'm sure they'll
- 16:43Speaker 1: hit outside as well. But you have these different things
- 16:46Speaker 1: you can do, and if it's really hot, you go
- 16:48Speaker 1: in there. It's climate controlled. It's just a better way
- 16:53Speaker 1: to make players the best that they can be, and
- 16:55Speaker 1: that's the goal of all of these advances that we've
- 16:59Speaker 1: had in the game in recent years. I know fans
- 17:02Speaker 1: sometimes get upset with analytics and they feel it's gone
- 17:05Speaker 1: too far. But the point of them all is simply
- 17:08Speaker 1: to help players improve. And that's the beauty of analytics too,
- 17:12Speaker 1: and that's what it is brought to the game of baseball.
- 17:15Speaker 1: And then when you see these facilities pop up with
- 17:18Speaker 1: their different avenues of technology and all of that, it
- 17:23Speaker 1: just is one other way to make players that much better.
- 17:27Speaker 1: So the game is at an extremely high level in
- 17:29Speaker 1: every way. Other sports have done the same with their
- 17:33Speaker 1: own training methods and nutrition, all of this. It's just
- 17:37Speaker 1: all in a different place than it was back in I.
- 17:41Speaker 4: Don't even want to say it back in nineteen eighty seven,
- 17:44Speaker 4: when I got to the Baltimore Sun age of twenty
- 17:46Speaker 4: four and started covering baseball at Bobby Maduro Stadium with
- 17:50Speaker 4: the little field on the side and not.
- 17:53Speaker 1: A whole lot else going on. All right, we'll be
- 17:56Speaker 1: back with Grill and Can right after this.
- 17:58Speaker 5: Hey, sometimes we do a little game on foul territory
- 18:02Speaker 5: called role play. It's not what you think. We're just
- 18:05Speaker 5: picking up our phones and we're talking as if we're
- 18:08Speaker 5: somebody in baseball. But if you'd like that phone to
- 18:11Speaker 5: be a little bit cheaper for making phone calls, who
- 18:14Speaker 5: should you call krats mintmobile because you get all the
- 18:18Speaker 5: same speed with a tiny little price, same coverage, tiny price.

- 19:05Speaker 1: All right back now with grill and can time for
- 19:08Speaker 1: your questions. Let's get right to them. And the update
- 19:10Speaker 1: on Giolito and Lttel's markets. Okay, we're talking, of course
- 19:14Speaker 1: about Lucas Giolito and Zach Lttel, and it's interesting the
- 19:19Speaker 1: way this spring is progressing. Of course, we're going to
- 19:22Speaker 1: have the usual share of injuries, and the one team
- 19:24Speaker 1: now that has injuries is Atlanta. They lost Spencer showing
- 19:28Speaker 1: Back swelling Back, and they lost as well Hurston Waldrop,
- 19:32Speaker 1: two guys who might have been part of their opening
- 19:35Speaker 1: day rotation. Swelling Back certainly would have been Waldrop as well.
- 19:38Speaker 1: And you say, well, okay, why don't the Braves sign
- 19:41Speaker 1: one of these guys. It's a valid question. The Braves
- 19:44Speaker 1: are in kind of a funny spot because they're sort
- 19:48Speaker 1: of jammed up with their roster as far as their
- 19:50Speaker 1: pitching is concerned. And in their case, they've got two guys,
- 19:54Speaker 1: Bryce Elder and Joey Wentz who are out of options,
- 19:58Speaker 1: and the Braves evidently they do not feel that the
- 20:01Speaker 1: investment in Gilito or Lttel would be worth what it
- 20:05Speaker 1: would take to displace those other two guys. They don't
- 20:08Speaker 1: feel Gioledo and Lttel are enough of an upgrade. I
- 20:11Speaker 1: guess over Whence and Bryce Elder. That's a debatable point
- 20:18Speaker 1: for sure. Giledo really finished the year strong last year
- 20:21Speaker 1: and Lttel has been a very consistent starter was for
- 20:24Speaker 1: the Tampa Bay Rays. But that's where this is right now.
- 20:28Speaker 1: And those guys probably are asking, I don't know, ten
- 20:30Speaker 1: million north of ten million each, and you can understand
- 20:34Speaker 1: their accomplished major league pitchers. They deserve that starting pitchers
- 20:37Speaker 1: get paid. But teams like the Braves, other teams that
- 20:41Speaker 1: are facing some losses with pitching starting pitching injuries, they
- 20:45Speaker 1: just don't seem, at least right now, to be as
- 20:48Speaker 1: intrigued by Giorledo and Lttel as you might expect. So
- 20:51Speaker 1: that's where it stands with those guys. Again, as I
- 20:54Speaker 1: mentioned in the first block, Schresier is also out there,
- 20:57Speaker 1: but Scherzer it looks like looks like he might be
- 21:01Speaker 1: headed back to Toronto or Toronto should say, all right,
- 21:05Speaker 1: next question, do you feel like the Braves don't have
- 21:07Speaker 1: enough power to be a serious contender? Enough firepower? No,
- 21:10Speaker 1: that's not the problem with the Braves. I expect that
- 21:13Speaker 1: their offense is going to revive this season, and for
- 21:17Speaker 1: two years now they've been kind of stalled offensively. But
- 21:21Speaker 1: Acuna is healthy. I can't imagine Michael Harris June a
- 21:24Speaker 1: second and Ozzi Albi's being as bad as they were
- 21:27Speaker 1: in the first half of last year. I expect Austin
- 21:30Speaker 1: Riley to finally get it together again. Matt Olsen is
- 21:34Speaker 1: almost always good. They've got Drake Baldwin, they have a
- 21:37Speaker 1: good offense, Mikeystremsky, Jerks and Profar. It's a lot there,
- 21:41Speaker 1: so they should be Okay. That's not the question I
- 21:44Speaker 1: have with the Braves. The question I have is if
- 21:47Speaker 1: they get one more starting pitching injury, then they're really
- 21:50Speaker 1: in trouble, and then the choice for Gilito and Lttel
- 21:54Speaker 1: might not be a choice at all. They might have
- 21:56Speaker 1: to sign one of them if those two pitchers are
- 21:58Speaker 1: still available. Next question, see we're waiting for one right here.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Here comes Derek Frasier asked. I asked if the Braves
- 22:06Speaker 1: could trade for Buston Lopez Ryan with the Pablo Lopez injury,
- 22:10Speaker 1: does this change the Twins tune on trading Ryan and
- 22:13Speaker 1: or Buxton. That's a fair question because certainly, with losing
- 22:16Speaker 1: Pablo Lopez, the team is not as competitive as it
- 22:20Speaker 1: might have expected. But under their new ownership, or I
- 22:24Speaker 1: should say, they're shifting control people to a different poll
- 22:28Speaker 1: lad he's talking like they want to compete, and he
- 22:33Speaker 1: keeps saying that, and he keeps coming out saying we
- 22:35Speaker 1: intend to be competitive in the Al Central. So I
- 22:39Speaker 1: don't expect a trade of either of those players. Ryan
- 22:43Speaker 1: or Buxton to happen this spring. Could it happen down
- 22:46Speaker 1: the line by the deadline. Certainly could happen if the
- 22:49Speaker 1: Twins don't contend, and I'm still having a hard time
- 22:52Speaker 1: seeing how they will contend. Now they're in the forgiving
- 22:56Speaker 1: Ale Central that will help. But the Tigers should be
- 22:59Speaker 1: really good. The Guardians always seem to figure it out.
- 23:03Speaker 1: The White Sox are improving, and the Royals they see
- 23:07Speaker 1: themselves as a contender as well. So I would expect
- 23:11Speaker 1: are going to be sellers, but not just yet. All right,
- 23:14Speaker 1: maybe we've got time for one more or so it's
- 23:17Speaker 1: one comes from the wicked better who asks? Are there
- 23:20Speaker 1: any names to watch on the trade market over these
- 23:22Speaker 1: next few weeks. There have been a few teams that
- 23:24Speaker 1: have said they feel they might make another move or
- 23:26Speaker 1: two before opening Day. I would say the big name
- 23:30Speaker 1: to watch is Ezac Parades. The Houston Astros have a
- 23:33Speaker 1: logjam in their infield. There's simply not enough positions to
- 23:38Speaker 1: play both Parades and Christian Walker every day. You've got
- 23:42Speaker 1: one of those guys at first base, Altuve at second,
- 23:44Speaker 1: Paya at short, Correa at third. Okay, there is a
- 23:49Speaker 1: DH position, but that belongs to Rodan Alvarez, so Paradis
- 23:53Speaker 1: really needs to go. They might not do it by
- 23:56Speaker 1: opening day, but he is the big name, of course.
- 23:58Speaker 1: And then they're the Red Sox who have a seeming
- 24:02Speaker 1: surplus still of starting pitching, and that's after doing some
- 24:07Speaker 1: things and trading some pieces during the off season. But
- 24:12Speaker 1: they could trade of Patrick Sandoval, even a Brian Beayo.
- 24:15Speaker 1: I don't know that I expect it to happen, but
- 24:17Speaker 1: it's certainly possible. And then they have again kind of
- 24:21Speaker 1: an outfield surplus as well. We've talked about this all
- 24:24Speaker 1: winter long. Duran and real you and Rafaela and Yoshita
- 24:29Speaker 1: and Anthony. Of course too many guys, so Anthony he's
- 24:34Speaker 1: not going anywhere, but Duran, possibly Yeshidah in a salary
- 24:40Speaker 1: dump maybe like the Jordan Hicks thing, that could happen.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Who knows, but those are some of the names that
- 24:46Speaker 1: could get moved, and certainly I would expect there to
- 24:48Speaker 1: be a few trades during spring. All right, with that,
- 24:52Speaker 1: we're gonna close it out. I want to thank everyone
- 24:54Speaker 1: for watching and listening as always on YouTube and Spotify
